I did the village pixel thing for my Crimean and Franco-Prussian war maps and I got them fairly accurate

So just include it's full territory, shrink some border on Prussia, and you'll have one that may not be exact but close

That’s a map that’s extremely generous with the amount of kingdoms

It likely includes all the counties and whatnot that were under a larger flag

Prussia didn’t have 47 nations just sitting inside its borders, and Austria wasn’t that much of a cluster fuck at any given time

Historically Austria was a cluster fuck until they literally did just that to get a bunch of kingdoms under their belt to form their empire

This map of the German Confederation (similar to the HRE) functioned fairly well. It usually had a couple larger nations at any time to carry the rest of the states on their backs.

Generally the way I design ranges and valleys is by taking my map into GIMP or PS and outlining the tectonic plates and importantly, the way they’re moving. If two plates are ramming into each other, it will create a high mountain range. If two plates are pulling away from each other, it creates a valley. It adds an interesting amount of depth into your map.

Also, adding volcanic ranges where two plates pull apart from each other is a good excuse to put mountains where there would normally be a valley

It’s also important to note that you need to continue these mountains underwater: adding underwater ranges similar to the modern day Mid-Atlantic Ridge is a good way to make your seas not look boring

Proportions are all determined by the size of the map in reference to the world

I tend to have my worlds range from 50* to -50* latitude

And drawing style varies on the map really. There isn’t a one-size-fits-all

I use mostly fantasy style mountains combined with realistic biomes because of the contrast, but i taught myself to do realistic and stylized mountains for different maps.

Generally fantasy mountains are the safest bet but if you want to experiment it’s really fun to do maps mirroring this more realistic style.

Mountains like that are cool but I feel like they aren’t much of a natural barrier. I feel like a mountain ranger should divide regions as they do in real life as opposed to just being a few hills and one peak

what’s the general stance on posting maps with kingdoms already spawned?

If you put lore i will like, regardlesss of format.

I like to play maps where i know the story.

But it also depends, sometimes you can make a map about a game or real country.

Here’s what I’ve gathered as someone who began as a border specialist: if you post a playable map (so one that’s not 40x40 and has 650,000 people) that is either from an interesting time period or alt history, you’ll get a good amount of upvotes. If you want to do something more cliché (i.e. Modern borders of Europe, WW1, WW2, Kaiserreich, TNO, etc.) you’ll get a mid amount of upvotes and a probably bad like to dislike ratio. If you want to get a lot of upvotes, there are three types of border maps that are best: 1. do a fantasy map and give it good lore, like Kideuz said. 2. do a map of a war or time period not frequently done; medieval, Napoleonic, Franco-Prussian, etc. And 3. do a world map. This is the most difficult and extremely time consuming, but if you can create an accurate world map that’s also playable, you’ll get a ton of upvotes and will earn the respect of most people who specialize in borders. Of course, what I’ve said isn’t always 100% true all of the time, but if you’re just getting into borders this is a pretty good outline to follow.

Honestly, no. I have a really beefy computer that has 32 GB and often when I load up your maps my game either crashes or lags a ton. They’re really awesome maps and the borders are incredible, but they’re really not all that playable.
