One newbie thing ive noticed that helps me is once you get used to the extract names, you can kinda tell where you are in the map because usually it is kinda the "opposite" end, like in Customs for example, if you see Crossroads, usually you are on the "east" end, and if you see ZB1011 as an extract, you are starting on the west-ish (I'm not sure how foolproof this is though admittedly)

That + having a map pulled up on a second monitor makes it easier to figure out where you are
