i want to have a soundboard ready for like doors opening, walking, fighting, etc any recommendations for mobile
Hm, I suppose discord has a soundboard you could utilize?
But personally, sessions are usually too fast paced for me to also manage a soundboard.
As a DM you'll have many other plates spinning that you may want to concentrate on instead.
i use kenku bot & its a lifesaver for me when it comes to background music!!
but i always dm on my desktop so theres that...
when i dm in person i just dont bother with a soundboard at all heh
ohhh i wont have access to my pc
i have no faith in myself tbh LOL
like what?
this exactlyy why i dont have a soundboard in-person, it's too much to keep track of already
it seems so simple when i read the books 💔
Look at it like this: the players play one character each, you play the entire world
You might need to keep track of multiple npcs, in combat especially. You may also often need to look up rules/inspiration during a session to respond to the players.
yeah its not like its impossible, but in my opinion, the mental energy i put into operating the soundboard would be better off spent in thinking abt npcs reactions, or whatevers going on the world
i take all your advice and i see it’s a bad idea but immersion 🥺
I'll often start a conversation in-character (as the DM) but then move to a third-person style after the first couple of lines. Unless we're really vibing, or exact words are important, we've got an adventure to get on with.
Usually I find a cool music track in the background is plenty.
There are entire youtube playlists for DnD
(Also some players can have difficulty getting to the point, or asking the questions they actually need answers to when they're filtering everything through their character's viewpoint. Helps lessen the cognitive load a bit.)
yeah!! especially if its just a super minor npc anyway, talking meta & straight to the point helps keep the game rolling smoothly

so prioritize fun and smoothness over all..
how do i know if im saying enough descriptive words as a dm and how can i change things up if they aren’t having fun
If you've hit all the five main senses in a location, that's plenty. Sometimes a wall is just a wall.
what do they taste
I ain't answering that!
di some people have 6 senses?
Humans have more than five senses, but in casual conversation the primary senses are the ones typically referenced.
You can also use different ways of describing things based on the characters. Say there's a dwarf in the party. You might say "there's a stone house here with a thatched roof," or you could say "there's a well-built house here, made of locally sourced grey stone."
Always a tough question. I'm sure you'll get 10 different answers from 10 different DMs. I think at the core of any suggestion is to get to know your players better, to understand what they like. People are always more invested when the game features things they like
And in addition those 10 different DMs don't know your players and what they like/prefer better than you 😎
Hello all I have a few questions about character creation if anyone is free I want to know about races that are allowed in most campaigns im trying to get me and friends into DnD but im not too sure if the characters we roughly made would fit into some of the campaigns that are here at least species wise (Thri-kreen, Loxodon, Owlin, Plasmoid and a few others) just want to make a smooth experience for them and a easy start for the dm sorry if this question doesnt make sense im trying to make some characters now
It really depends on the setting the DM will have you in
Although I'd imagine most would be ok with the species chosen as long as it's not broken homebrew
If you're worried about species not being accepted by a DM, the safest thing would be to pick a species from the Basic Rules. The further away you get from those options, the less likely a DM is going to be to accept your idea.
In order of likelihood:
- Almost guaranteed: any species from the Basic Rules
- Highly likely: any species from an official supplement that doesn't have a flight speed
- Likely, but not guaranteed: any official species that has a flight speed, or a species from Spelljammer book
- Unlikely: a species from a popular homebrew 3rd party supplement
- Very unlikely: a species homebrewed by you, the player
Hello everyone hope you're all in good health. I am brand new to DnD, wanted to try it for sometime, unfortunately I Don't really have a local community so going online is my only shot. Been trying to learn about the game through a few youtube videos and teaching threads, however I still feel extremely lost. Seems like it's something that can only be learned by doing. Any recommendations on how to properly learn how to do things and if there are any places for possible One-shots for teaching purposes 🐦

Welcome! The best place to start is with the free Basic Rules, linked in the bot post above. As you're giving them a read, we'll be happy to answer any specific questions you have here in this chat.
Thank you is it ok for putting my character sheet here for you guys to check?
Oh heck yes!! Thank you for doing an intro !! Im totaly new as well and got very intimidated when I opened this thread and read the discussion.
Ps. Ive been wanting to play since highschool but could never score an invite.
You can post it here if you've still got some basic questions about how character building works, but I think the best place for questions about more specific aspects of your character sheet would be #character-discussion .
Understood thank you ill get to it
Sooooo.... Back to the other questions that they asked. Does anyone know any good sites or even games ( not Baldurs Gate) that can be used as a practice run before I try to find a real campaign. Point being I really dont want to make a full of myself being the moto noob I am.
That's a tough one, because the core of what makes DnD DnD is the social aspect. It's hard to 'practice' for DnD by yourself.
Damn. I thought the answer might be something like that. Ok , thanks for the help. Im off to go act a fool in someones game.
Try doing some one-shots
That being said, games that use the 5e system as their base, such as Baldur's Gate 3, Solasta, or the older Neverwinter games can give a vague insight into how the mechanics work.
Know where to find one-shots for new players? where a player volunteers to do some teaching:>)
We're all fools here. Check a stream or two, get the basics down before you start play, be enthusiastic and genuine.
Check the listings in #looking-for-players for games that want people, read the details, respond as appropriate and cross your fingers.
Type /looking and select the option for #looking-for-dm to advertise yourself as a new player in search of a group. Be sure to include your regular availability!
There are other Discord servers where people gather for games. You can find them in #looking-for-community .
Aside from here, you could also try LFG areas in sites like Reddit, Roll20 or the D&D Beyond forums to get started.
I will say, listening to D&D podcasts isn't a bad start, especially if you already have a good understanding of the rules. If you need more of an understanding of the rules, then just devoting a few hour-long study sessions reading through some of the necessary sections of the PHB will help a lot. You don't need to read all of the class descriptions, just the one you're playing, but reading through all the combat rules and suchlike is very helpful.
But if you just don't know where to start with roleplaying, then podcasts are a great option.
Take a look at the #find-a-game channels, you'll most likely want either #looking-for-players or #looking-for-community
Oh my gosh. I leave for 5 minutes and I miss the knowledge dump. Thank you so much!! Im so excited Im not sure where to begin....... probably with the studying. I oddly love to study. Oh and the podcast!! I can totally listen to those while I do chores.
@sterile estuary Do you have any good podcast recomendations?
@wild onyx Cant help but be genuine all the time its a blessing and a curse. Hopefully that will serve me well when I finally feel brave enough to join a game.
Okay there's a spectrum of dnd podcasts, there's the very serious and the very whimsical. Some can be both, like Dungeons and Daddies, but if you want to learn the rules as well from the podcast, then that won't help you very much. None of them figured out how to play D&D until session 65 or so. If you want something more serious, then Critical Roll or Icebound might be more your preference. My personal favorite is Just Roll With it, and they're usually on the whimsical side with the occasional very serious moment.
Then you have the extremely whimsy levels in most of Legends of Avantris's campaigns like Uprooted or Once upon a Witchlight. Although, Icebound is also one of their campaigns and that one leans toward the being very grim.
I like whimsy. Whimsy is good. So Ill definitely try Just Roll With it.
Awesome! They also have a pretty good mix of combat and roleplaying. Very good character development too, especially for Gillion.
Yay! Im so excited !! Honestly Im going to go get started right now. Thank you all for your help!!
And remember that we're here for any specific questions you get along the way!
when player attacks, they roll d20, if above ac they then roll the corresponding dice?
Roll a d20, adding the ability score modifier and proficiency bonus (if applicable).
If the total is equal or higher than the target's AC that's a hit. Then you get to roll for damage.
almost:
- if you get the same number as the AC, you also hit
- you add your modifiers to the d20
proficiency is from race and class yes?
and ability score modifier you mean like the plus and minus for every stat? and it’s just their attack stat? dex for bow, strength for axe and wtv?
yes basically, proficiency with weapons is very rarely from race though
what is prof from generally
Class.
for weapons: class
oh!
races/species gives out proficiencies for skills most often, but not always
i wish to build a map on pc, not to play on or host for visuals and planning, and stuff, any suggestions? free and pc or mobile
A map of rooms or a geographical region?
ah! okay, i want both, a large continental map, then inside more detail but not high detail
Inkarnate can get you started. #dnd-maps can help further.
For interiors, Dungeon Scrawl can help.
both free?
Sure, although paid versions exist with more features.
i want to start playing with people online and chatting and stuff. where should i go/start?

what if i still don't know how to play? i am a complete beginner and i never actually played a game myself, but i watched a ton of DnD related stuff before
and i also play a ton of rpgs if that's useful i guess
I just made my first character and i need some feedback on it
i just got magic items, i was wondering: how often do people usually give them out, do the rarities mean much? and i know it’s bad in any game to give the player all legendary gear consistently but tell me what could go wrong so i know why
can i see
Let me msg it to you rq cause it has a lot of text

The best place to start is with the free Basic Rules, linked in the bot post above. As you're giving them a read, we'll be happy to answer any specific questions you have here in this chat.
Everyone starts somewhere! Don't worry about it too much. Pop quiz, when might you be asked to roll a d20?
Magic items create pretty significant gaps in power. For example, the DMG recommends that a party of level 5 players should have 1 uncommon magic item each, maximum.
A single legendary item can completely alter a character's power level or utility.
when you are fighting or smth? i think also if there is a random chance event if you get above a certain number you successfully trigger the event if you get below it you fail. like a jump above lava
dmg?
Close enough. The Dyno post up there has some video guides too, if that's more your style.
Dungeon Master's Guide
is dropping 1 MI per boss death a good rule?
Depending on how many 'bosses' your party fights, that could make your party pretty powerful pretty quickly. But that depends on the dispense rate and which magic items in particular they're receiving. Not all magic items are made equal.
prior to asking you i planned on having my party of 2 have 3-5 bosses per level but all optional and possible to miss cause players are playery, pretty much like quests they can go down the route of blah blah blah so maybe 1-2 of the bosses per level will be actually found
and you can roll to seduce npcs apparently
Check page 218 of the 2024 DMG for the recomended party wide magic item awards by tier
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/magic-items#MagicItemsAwardedbyLevel here, it's in the free basic rules as well
still probably a good rule of thumb, even for a 2014 table
thank you
it recommends roughly 6 common, 4 uncommon, and 1 rare magic item by the time they level up to level 5
across the whole party
could also use the character creation rules in https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character#StartingEquipment for determining how many items they start with if this is a new campaighn starting at level 5
so 1 common and one uncommon each in that instance
I haven't really heard that in particular. Perhaps you mean "don't make a homebrew game"? As a new DM, it's highly, highly recommended to run a pre-written campaign before you dip your toes into making something from scratch
that is news to me thank you but no people tell me not to plan every little detail and route as if they se splaying a video game because it will go bad
Ah, I see what you mean. Yes, that's good advice.
why is that
players will do things you dont expect, and will want to go down paths you are not entirely prepared for.
what if the 5 paths and the forest surrounding the starting town are all written “game” routes?
I think its better to approach prep like this
- there is a problem in a place, and these are the creatures that are causing or are affected by it because of x reasons.
- here is how the PCs becomes aware of the problem and here are a bunch of reasons why they would be interested
- from there, your adventure is pretty flexible while still having a clear goal.
- its better to flesh out places, people and motivations instead of "storylines" or "routes"
Then you've written 2-3x more information you need, and when your players pick one route, the time spent to plan the other 4 are wasted
isn’t that repetitive
no? why would it be
go here, kill minion, come back and claim reward?
Get the characters involved in a tricky situation in an interesting location then as the party approach a possible solution reveal an unwelcome complication.
right, much more concise
I've got an even shorter one too.
and what do i do if there is a stalemate in the mission, they didn’t “fix the issue” but the ordeal is somehow over
Guess we'll find out how the situation evolves next episode!
a lot of improv?
you set logical consequences for the characters' actions
yes, it does involve a decent amount of improv
Doesn't have to be, if your situations are being generated by motivated actors in uneven relationships. They'll do what they do!
improv does get easier if you have a good grasp on motivations and stakes, yeah
is there a “cannon” dnd map(s) with every city on grid for fights? like all of baldurs gate
I guess prewritten official adventures have "cannon" maps? but I dont think that is quite what you had in mind
noo like the sword coast
sure there are official maps for that, but not every city in detail
you can check the forgotten realms wiki online, its pretty well maintained but does not differentiate much between old and new lore
lore changed?
oh yeah lore gets updated, discarded and retconned all the time
usually with edition changes
but its not really important, just chose the version you like best or do your own alterations in your game
any D&D like material can be used for campaigns in my eyes
whether you want to roleplay some wow or eso is totally fine with me
Nobody needs a full gridded map of a city. Much easier to prep some locations where a grid might be useful. Turn them sideways or flip them to use them again.
Yeah city maps and battle maps have different needs
dude, your bio, it's incredible
thank you! I put a lot of work into it
any recommendations on videos
Ginni Di and Matt Collville have good videos for tips on running the game
hello everyone this is my first time here

thank you ❤️
I am interested also. First time as well
Hello, I've never played DnD before, but I want to so badly. Is anyone looking for new players?
Your best bet is looking at the #find-a-game channels,
Looking now thank you
i want to make my first character but i don't know what to make them. a fighter seems the best option for newcomer but wizards sound really interesting. and if i do choose a wizard idk if i should pick that class or a sorcerer/warlock
Do you want to be a magic user?
since i always liked being a support in any game but not interested in any of the healing classes
ranged stuff in general. i just don't like making big decisions. i want to chill in the backseats
Hmm I see
I think I would go with a wizard in that case but I am not fully confident with that
i never went on a dnd campaign in my life before and people say fighter is easy so i wanted something easy to start with
well i did join because i found wizards/sorcerers interesting
Wait scratch my words, fighter would be better, wizards have a lot of spells that would give you a bit of tough decisions
Sorcerer is a close second
oh ok tysm
Of course!
btw how do i balance my character's stats? i want to give them like a VERY interesing backstory of being a person from a big family of priests- healers idk what they are called in dnd, but he didn't like that and said :"f*** it we ball" and just ran away and picked a different class
is there like a number i shouldn't go over for max sum, of stats
?tag new abilities
Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
Well thats mighty useful!
Stick with the standard array (described above) until you have a table and the DM says otherwise.
ok thanks
btw i REEEEALLY want to start a first game but idk how much i should know before i start. i am not really the type of person that reads stuff, i understand things better in action
If you'd like I would be down to dm a oneshot and help guide you through what you need to know, I have a lot of experience myself, but thats only if you want to
Ginny Di has a good overview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hNNBjVmNbQI And she's far from the only resource out there!
Yesss Ginny Di is so good!!
i already watched this review
oh ok i just don't want to bother anyone
You're no bother at all friend, we are all adventurous people seeking the same thrill of campaigns
if that's the case, know the class you want to play, 1 race that sounds cool, and follow the basics on the PHB
learn the rest as u go
Shouldn't this go in #looking-for-players?
yea
use this #looking-for-players but the idea sound excellent, is it eldritch horror?
I am creating a for my first-ever adventure. We are using the Heroes of the Borderlands starter set.
Do people usually go into character creation blind about the adventures?
I want to customize my equipment because there are some redundancies in what I get from my species and background.
Where can I research to prepare my character without spoiling the story. For example, my background gives me a bedroll, which is fine if I will be able to use it in the game, but I dont even know if there is extreme cold in this adventure.
Ask your DM what information you should know
gotcha
what biomes? ig? are in dnd? i only know of normal feyrune and shadowfell very vaguely. what else is in the world
a lot
Its not super defined, but you can look at the monster habitats here for inspiration: https://www.dndbeyond.com/monsters
(look for the field called habitat and click for a dropdown)
Heyyy uh not my first time playing dnd, but I’m fairly new to it and I wanted to try DMing for a group of friends, I was wondering if anyone has any good oneshot recommendations or and tips on how to dm
Peril in Pinebrook is a great little starting adventure https://media.wizards.com/2023/downloads/dnd/Peril_in_Pinebrook_COMPLETE.pdf

What dragon of icespire peak
My dm friend making us play that
It's my first time
I am trying to learn because they invited me but I think it could be troll
I played a couple of sessions of that adventure with my brother as the DM. Basically it starts as a series of posted quests you choose to pursue that eventually leads to a conflict with the dragon of icespire peak.
I was tryna ask if it's beginner friendly
Definitely. Pretty simple but fun adventure!
Few minor issues that might require the DM to do a bit of work, but overall a great adventure
Great! Are you familiar with the game rules?
Nay sadly
Embarrassing as it is I'm used to the text style style of RP like the usual ones you find in discord rps usually
See this: #dnd-newcomers message
Try having a read through the first couple of sections of the Free Rules to get a grasp of the terminology, then have a go at putting a character together for practice.
You'll need to pick a class, species and background. Let us know if you have any questions!
Ooh
There are text games, you'll see them referred to as play by post (PbP). Some are live chat, others are asynchronous.
You are a saint
And I wish you only the best of fortune
Okay read open rules
What next
Class, species, background. No wrong choices at this stage. Pick from the free rules options.
Hey there, im a DnD newbie struggling to build my first character. Rolled 18 / 16 / 15 / 14 / 14 / 10 for my ability scores, so I guess I have all the options with only 1 low stat.
I was thinking about characters like Wulfgar (forgotten realms) or Marvel thor or a mix of both (so a martial beast with a bit of lightning magic and maybe a magically returning hammer). Alternatively a paladin smite build or some kind of rogue with a bit of magic mobility to dash around the battlefield.
Any tips how I could build these characters?
Great question for the folks over in #character-discussion
Imma be real, I came to see if anyone's looking for a new player for their virtual table -- I haven't d&d'd in like, 6 years and the experience that I do have is limited so I'm looking for someone who is open to me re-learning lots of things... If this potentially dings anyone's bell, please feel free to reach out 🙂
Hi there and welcome - so, we dont allow soliciting for groups in other channels because we have looking-for channels like #looking-for-players
If you want to learn how to use these spaces check out #find-a-game
My bad, I will check that out!
Hello all, I’m new to dnd and I’m looking to play my first game! Where is a good place to start looking or does anyone know a campaign I may be able to join?
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
Hi, I was checking out the #find-a-game area but the average minimum age requirement was 18 for most games.
I don't have a problem with mature content or problems or aspects at all I actually think it makes the game more fun.
The bigger issue is, adults are generally not gonna be comfortable roleplaying those topics with underaged folks
yeah its not like I dont believe any teenager could be okay dealing with these topics, its more of a matter of principle that I wouldnt want to make that judgement call due to the imbalance of power and experience
but I see how that is frustating for young players who want to get into the game
That's understandable but what if I got a guardian or something to talk to them.
you could try, but I wouldnt get my hopes up. It probably a better idea to search for games run by DMs in your age range or games run by adults that are explicitly okay with young players and family friendly
You might also have more luck on either a community server or an in person game. It feels less weird to play with teens who are either actually present (with a bunch of other people around at a game store) or part of an existing community than a private game
thx for the help
Or try and run a game for people around your age yourself 😎
being a DM isn't nearly as difficult as people might make it seem, and there's often a lot of people complaining about 18+ only games
I've already tried people in my area and people in my age group within two cities of me none of them really wants to play that's why I came here.
Is there any place else I can look?
You could check the #looking-for-community servers to see if any are open to all ages
That's part of what I meant by community server
Thx
Also, just a discord note, but it's generally considered polite to turn off that @on symbol when replying in an ongoing conversation
So it doesn't ping every time
Ok thx i did not know that.
Discord doesn't make it that clear, and won't let you make it off by default. It's why I mention it
wdym?
The channel where players look for dms. And dms look for players
Like...I don't remember seeing it when I joined...
Those channels have been there since I joined, and to my knowledge they were also there way before I joined
And that was like two years ago?🤔
Huh....interesting...okay...so I put in a...request? Now I wait?
Pretty much, to my knowledge.
I would recommend getting proactive and looking through the posts that want players
Say what now? And how?
Since there's a lot more players than DMs in general
Look at the posts in the #looking-for-players channel and post on any that interest you
Ooooohhhhhhhhhhhh
You don't get automatically matched up, so just waiting is very hit or miss
There is that as well....okay okay thank yooooouuuu
Also senior I have a question about what to look for exactly? Like I want to have adventures and fun and make friends?
Hard to say without knowing what you like
Look for descriptions that sound interesting to you
And times you're available
qq all, im a new in d&d, maybe will someone teach me how to play?
Hi new to dnd as well looking for a fun group to join and learn from.

Here's some learn to play stuff
I’m new ready to play dm
How do I post a ad looking for group? I see all the other posts but dont know how myself
Uh guys? I just got invited by a guy named arc
And he gave me a link of sorts. Is it legit?
what's the link for?
It might be legit. I don't track those posts
It's probably legit but I'm not entirely sure
Though if they ask you to pay for art before a game, it's likely a scam
I have had 3 people dm me asking me if i would like to join the game
Alright. What should I look out for?
I was like, I already got my own art, they were like, nah u have to buy from us if u want to join the camp
Ufffffff
Yeah, those are a fairly common scam
That's 100% a scam.
Anything that asks you to pay up front for a "free" game, or honestly, unsolicited DMs in general are probably scams or bots
Yeah lol, I just said i refuse to buy anything, thank u for the opportunity and blocked em
I’ve been looking for games tho, I’ve never played so while we are here… if anyone’s looking lol
And even if "just buy character art" -thing wasn't a common scam, it would still be a paid game, not a free one, by definition
But yeah those ones are basically always scams, and bunch of bad actor wanting to take advantage of the fact that there are a lot of desperate players wanting to play, while it's difficult to get into a game
Guys. Is owlbear a thing? Like to play dnd?
Owlbear rodeo is a vtt yes
OwlBear is honestly the best free VTT I've played on. So much better than Roll20.. So much less glitchy
Many online games will ask you to have a vtt (virtual table top) as its hard to play encounters without one
No, it's just a link
Even on the DM side, it's just a link. If they're requiring you to download anything, especially if they're claiming it's OwlBear, just block. There shouldn't be anything you need to download unless it's a character PDF
Well i almost found a season but they wanted me to pay for character art. I like the picture I found already
That’s a scam Gilgamesh
I had a feeling
That was actually a topic being spoken about lmao
Maybe I should just give up on finding a actual season. My rss are pretty limited right now anyway
It takes more than a few hours to find a game. You have to be actively looking at the DM's looking for player posts, casting your line out to multiple that interest you, keep an eye on it until you find something that has a good DM and a group of fellow players you vibe with
Please report such scams to Discord and be careful with any unsolicited friend requests
Well atm I dont have a pc all I have is my phone so I can't do roll20 or the other stuff so I guess ill just wait
How do I post looking for dm?
#find-a-game has instructions, including the command you need to use
i'd run a game. but i don't like VTTs. or rather, i haven't found one i like that runs smoothly on my PC.
that, and i'm really not a fan of dndbeyond's character manager when compared to a piece of paper.
Owlbear Rodeo runs even on phones, so maybe give that a try?
lags. less than most others.
i just generally would much rather deal with an actual map.
and a physical table
so far the one that seems to lag the least is Shard.
but thats only a fraction less lag than owlbear
Post at your local game store or library that you are looking to run a game.
hey guys quick question whats unearthed arcana and how does it work?
It's playtest material. The makers of the game release it occasionally in the hope of getting feedback from the community. Some of it makes it to print following revisions. Some never sees an official version.
Hi I’m new to dnd and me and my friend typed in a link from a dnd sheet and we were brought here and we need someone to teach us how to play
Welcome, young one
Can u help
You're unlikely to get direct one-on-one teaching on this server. There's simply too many new players every day for people to have that kind of bandwidth

Hello I'm new to the server and I wanted to experience and play DnD since my brother plays it
Welcome everyone
Same as Ratatoskr, I really recommend looking at the links that Dyno posted above, as they're a great starting point. If you have specific questions, we'll be happy to answer them.
hi
Hai! i just created my first ever character. Is there anything important i should know for playing paladin? i know the basic rules but the character sheet on beyond scared me a little when it popped up.
Do you know the spellcasting rules?
nope.
Then you know what to work on now :D
Main things are spell slots (how many spells of a level and under you can cast), prepared spells (which spells you can cast) and that you can only expend one spell slot a round
Which game version are you using?
no idea. I geus the most standard and recent one.
Then this is the correct rules
Hi guys I'm new in here!! My nickname is Ginrou!
Apart from that the basics should be enough
Gooooood morning afternoon evening, Wahzzup!
thanks for the info! time to give spell casting a read. Any tips for paladin in general?
I'm fine! Im a dungeon master most of the time but I like to play as a player
Your lay on hands, even expending one hp use, can bring an ally from downed to conscious. Also, bless is great, and remember that you can use your oath as a great basis for roleplay!
Can I have two classes that both have a subclass I want to make my character a fighter/monk with samurai and drunken master
Yes once you reach level three for a class u get your sub class so if u multi class and stay even, at 6th level (3rd level for each) you can have both those you mentioned.
I’m not sure how those two will mix but a cool concept, Drunken Samurai lol
i've played BG3 and i want to try out D&D,do i have to pay for the things like books etc etc?
Im very much new to dnd and im trying to find a class and a race for my first character. Im very much certain that i want to be a spellcaster but not like a wizard. Whats the difference between a warlock and a sorcerer? Or which spellcaster would you recommend? Im sorry if thats too much im just confused.
okay so i've played bg3 not DND so i can't really say but
Wizard - you learn spells through scrolls, study etc and you have access to prepared spells which the number of those are(wizard lvl) + (how smart your character is),all spells you learned
Warlock - you made a pact with a higher being(EX. a devil,a eldricth being or a fey, etc) and you have access to much less spell slots(basically mana) but they also restore on a short rest, you have alot less spells but they're stronger
Sorcerer- you get magic from a gift/your bloodline(EX. a draconic bloodline or drawing magic from the wild),you have access to less spells and have more spell slots as a wizard and you also have alot of bonuses depending on what sorcerer you are(for example a draconic sorcerer has more armor,a wild magic sorcerer can use..wild magic that either does good or bad for you)

Ok
It’s cause of my characters backstory and stuff that I want them
The idea is fine! It's how it interacts with the rules that you've got to be careful about.
You could end up with a mediocre drunken monk-samurai when you could have had a great samurai or monk with the kind of traits you're really after.
Hi @fervent tundra , looks like you're trying to post in #find-a-game directly.

Question: for those who prefer typing over handwriting when filling in a character sheet, is there an app you use to do so that saves your written work?
hey guys, im new to D&D and i was hoping i could find a few ppl to join my group and help me lean how to play
if ur willing to join u need to be under 16
im pretty sure D&D beyond has them
Well d&d beyond has its own character sheet maker thing I’m looking for like a fully editable pdf
Check here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/resources/1779-d-d-character-sheets
Should be a fillable PDF version listed.
i have a question about the spell silence :
it is said that when you cast it, you create a sphere centered on a point. my question is : can that point be an object or a person, making it so that if it move, the spell area moves with it, or can the spell simply not moveand only acts on a fixed 20 foot radius ?
usually if a spell could be placed on an object or creature it would say so in the text.
okay, it doesn't seem to indicate so, so i'm guessing i can't do it
thank you for the answer

Hey. Let us know if u have any questions
Hi guys new to server but not new to dnd :p
Hilo! New to the server, slightly new to dnd
hello is it possible to find games that need players on demand or can you only find and enquire about set times in the week
Check in #looking-for-community , many places run games as and when.
Set times are quite common though. You need a bunch of folk all available for the same 3-4 hours.
ok thank you gman

Found a game and got my first character sheet made 🙂
Hey so I’m thinking of making a new dnd character but i don’t know on what species and class to choose. I’m going for sorta of like a monkey king type of character with my own take and personality. Anyone got any tips or suggestions
Monks are fast, unarmoured and usually use staffs if they ever use weapons, and are great martial artists
They’re also my favourite class, so that might be a bit biased
?tag new monk
Monk
Dart in and out of melee while striking fast and hard
Monks use rigorous combat training and mental discipline to align themselves with the multiverse and focus their internal reservoirs of power. Different Monks conceptualize this power in various ways: as breath, energy, life force, essence, or self, for example. Whether channeled as a striking display of martial prowess or as a subtler manifestation of defense and speed, this power infuses all that a Monk does.

Thank you so much 🙏, are there any ape like species that would be best to use
Both just incase
Hmm
There is, though Hadozees need their specific book
Hadozee exists in 2014, but in 2024, you gotta use smthng like Shifter
You might want to flavour another species, like human
Hadozees can be used in 2024
Shifter is there in 2014 as well
If I am rolling for my extra 2 languages and I roll a 3 and then 4 does that mean I only know common and dwarves? Or can I reroll until I get two separate languages?
2014 content can be used as long as they’re not reprinted, generally
Oh Ok
It’s 2 EXTRA languages, you get common be default
Thank you guys so much 🙏
Np Mate, Always Happy to Help
If you got any more questions feel free to ask
Right. But the language table lists 3 and 4 as Dwarvish. I rolled a 3 then a 4
We'll Answr
Nuggest Also Quick Question
Roll again then
Witout Factoring Spell Scrolls or smthng
Third Level Wizards have 10 Spells.
Is it ONLY first level?
Then what is it?
Yes but without outside forces, they have 10 Spells, and 3 Cantrips
Are those 10 spells only first level?
No
Or can I divide them into two and First level spells?
Whenever you gain a Wizard level after 1, add two Wizard spells of your choice to your spellbook.
On top of your spellbook, when you gain a level you choose more prepared spells, of which can be a level you can cast
Theoretically, a third level wizard can have 3 level 2 spells, one from leveling up and 2 from their spellbook
Also 10 spells?
They get 6
I believe it's based on their int modifier? A base number plus modifier
…oh right
You need to roll it? I thought you just needed to choose the language you want
It says you can choose or roll. I wanted to roll
You don't need to, but you can if you want
Definitely not going to roll for it
Then that's what you get from your rolls
I am confused about calculating saving throws. PHB is kinda confusing. How do you know if you are "proficient" in a saving roll? What exactly am I adding?
Like, if I have 3 proficiencies in wisdom, do I add the bonus 3x?
It'll say in the class/subclass you pick, and occassionally race or background
And your prof bonus is based on level
You know because each class gets proficiency in two saving throws stats. You wouldn't have 3 proficiencies in wisdom, you might have proficiency in three different wisdom skills. You'd add your proficiency bonus to your saves if you are proficient in a saving throw stat.
Ooooooh. Got it. Thanks!
What if they don't have proficiency in that saving throw like wis saving throw but their wis in ability score is high like 20?
then they'd get a bonus (or penalty if low stats) appropriate to the stat on that save. 20 wisdom would mean a +5 save. Although most of the time high stats and proficiency bonuses coincide.
If you don't have wis saving throw prof, but a 20 in wis, then your saving throw is a +5, based on the wis modifier
If I understand correctly, if I have a +1 WIS and 2 proficiency then my saving throws would be +3. Right?
Yup, you got the idea.
Interestingly it means that saves without proficiency don't scale at all as you level, which is pretty noticeable at high level where DC's only increase. So someone casts maze on your 20th level barbarian with 8 intelligence he's out of the fight until the spell ends. Doesn't matter how many saves your barb makes, he can never make a DC 20 int save.
Now I get it thanks

anyone got tips for making a campaign? I'm a newbie and trying to have a "dnd campaign for newbies" with my friends, aaand I'm gonna be the dm, but I'm not really sure how to put a campaign together TwT
First depends on the group. I would ask them what they prefer theyre roleplay to combat ratio is
You could do a module (premade campaign) if you want
Hello
Else, start small and expand out, and keep the scope relatively reasonable
Hallo
I’m looking for a campaign to join lol, I’m trying to learn I have a friend also
you can check out #find-a-game for information on how to find a group online. To make a post, type the appropriate command in any chat channel. There’s also DnD beyond forums, reddit or roll 20.
same but i m new and alone ahahh if anyone has a spot good bve cool
Yea what he said
Sorry I don’t have one I’m actually trying to learn how to play a different kind of TTRPG
As for learning the rules:
Read up on the first few chapters of the free basic rules on #learn-to-play , and feel free to ask any questions you might have.
fair enough
It won’t let me message?
You need to make a specific command to post there
Type /looking-for-dm and fill out the form, then look around in #looking-for-players and respond to posts from DM’s
@rare carbon @hearty blaze thank you both! I appreciate it 😊
Glad to help
There’s also #dm-discussion , which is a great help
Also real quick. Whenever you find out their ratio, remember if you can it’s up to you. To make fun memorable interactive NPC especially if it’s roleplay.
Totally optional that’s just what I find very effective
Not exactly a DnD newcomer, but im playing 2014 5e cleric for the first time ever, any tips on what to do in combat? My dm is a more dungeon crawler type of dm so there will be lots of combat
basically, you want to be economical with your spell slots. Healing word to pick up downed allies instead of topping them off, using spells like Bless and Spirit Guardians that get a lot of mileage. Try to avoid taking damage yourself if possible
toll the dead is a decent option for a damage cantrip
Make sure you have at least 1 thing to do for your bonus action and reaction, if possible. And a couple cantrips you can rely on for ongoing usefulness even when you're down to no more spell slots, plus something else you can do that doesn't involve dealing damage at all.
It's hard to be good at skills for some classes, but if there are going to be a lot of non-combat situations, make sure you have at least 1 skill where you can contribute sometimes. It gets boring when you can't, over and over again. 😐
Woaah okay, thanks yall!
@timber bane Make sure you have fun. Choose spells -- or at least A spell -- that you will have fun casting.
clerics are naturally good at perception, medicine and insight, which are useful skills to have
Ironically they aren't good at perception. Their wis modifier makes them better at it a tiny bit, but they don't get any prof in it unless it's from outside sources like background
okay sure but its not uncommon to get perception proficiency from somewhere
lots of species give it as well
hi ive seen d&d plays and it think it would be fun but i have no idea how to play
and i dont like interacting irl so i was also going to ask if its possible to play over discord
It's very common to play online using discord and either a dice app or a VTT (virtual Table top) for maps, tokens and sheets.
alr
?tag new online
I have a question. If I have a dread ambusher from 2014 which gave you extra one attack plus 2 action for attack because of extra attack from fighter and ranger total of 3 attacks then I use action surge. Do I get another 3 attacks including a dread ambusher extra one attack?
Although it gets way more fun if you get your own dice (WORTH IT)
Learning as you go is pretty normal- liek playing any game the rules don't mean much until you actually see them in play. But still a good idea to get the general gist of how to make a PC and maybe how combat runs. You can always practice makign a PC by your self too- this will help speed things up when you get a game.
pc?
is d&d one of those games that sounds really hard to play but is as easy as playing uno?
It's as simple or complicated as the group playing it wants it to be. There are core game rules and mechanics (see chapter 1 of the free basic rules) and everything builds off that.
alr
I'd suggest looking through #learn-to-play and the first 2 chapters of the free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
ok thanks
Is there anyone who could answer my question?
theres so much to read...
Again just focus on chapter 1 (core game rules/mechanics) and chapter 2 (how to make a character/how the character sheet works).
Everything else you can pick up as you play.
But also feel free to ask specific questions as you're reading and learning - folks here are generally happy to help out.
Is it possible for dread ambusher extra one attack to apply in the second attack from action surge?
Thank you for that

Welcome! The best place to start is with the free Basic Rules, linked in the bot post above. As you're giving them a read, we'll be happy to answer any specific questions you have here in this chat.
im more talking about the whole getting past interviews and the fact i tend to be a very unlucky person in general
there are only 2 games that are joinable due to time restrictions and both look like they're be really difficult just to enter
This server is hardly the only place to look for games, though! The guide in my profile has a bunch of other options.
Well, take your time looking. It's not unusual for the search for the right game to take a few days or even a few weeks. Unfortunately, DnD isn't one of those games where you can just hop in, after all.
Being "difficult just to enter" is part of the player finding process. As a DM, I would not want there to be a button that's just "join the game" for players, as that would just result in either having nothing but randoms, or I'd have to interview all the applicants anyways, so something like a form to enter is a very classic way to filter out the large number of people who'd want to join, to get the best fitting players for the table and get players actually willing to put the effort into getting to the game 😛
Any game that picks the players by first-come-first-serve -basis, or worse as a lottery, is relying entirely on random chance for the players to be good fit for the table
is anyone in the business of teaching me and my partner to play this game ?
You’ll be hard pressed to find one-on-one or one-on-two teaching here, there’s just too many new players.
That being said, read through #learn-to-play , particularly the Playing The Game and Character Creation chapters of the Free Basic Rules are helpful. Then ask any questions you might have along the way here.
Free basic D&D rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
what if i pay lol
Hm. Didn’t think of that
Then maybe, though I don’t know where you’d go to advertise that
#dnd-advertisements maybe? Idk
Maybe ask in #moderator-support

Hey guys, just wanted to say hi!! I am a complete nooby and have played one game with a friend but really enjoyed wanted to join to try and learn more and hopefully place some more games
I appologies in advance if I ask to many questions I have been told I have 2 brain cells fighting for 3rd place at times but look forward to learning from you guys
Welcome aboard. Be sure to check the #channel-guide for everything we have to offer.
Is there anything specific i should know from free rules? Page is gigantic and its my first time getting into DnD, heard about it from times to times and finally decided to give it a try
- What is dice?
- Ability scores and you: how to get stuff done.
- Anatomy of a character (sheet)
Get the basic terms down, then try bolting a character together for practice. Take your pick of class, species and background.
And as always, any questions: just ask.
It’s unfortunately based mostly on American laws and not so much on trusting the maturity
If strength is my dump stat as a rogue halfling, what are some strategies with combat? I actually have -1 modifier for my level one but really high DEX. Should I spend extra GP on range weapons?
Finesse and range weapons use Dexterity, so those are really your go-to as a rogue 😎
Rogue is a Dex based class, so as already pointed out, Finesse and ranged weapons are what you should be using
But finesse weapons like daggers and rapiers are still melee right? So unless I throw my daggers, dont I still have to use my strength modifier?
Finesse allows you to use dex instead of strength in melee. That is what the finesse property does
Ahhhhh! Nice. Thanks so much
np
I got really sad for a minute lol
with finesse, you never **have **to use str, melee or throwing
though its always an option too
Hello guys!
Im very New to DnD, played like 2 games with friends. Im sorry if i act very dumb because i have one brain cell fighting for fourth place. Currently still confused about what abilities fighters/rogues have because all i understood was acrobatics, which i am still bamboozled about where i can ever use that.
Hi!
If you're talking about skills (Acrobatics is a skill) then it isn't just fighters and rogues. ALL characters make ability checks. For the most part, your DM will ask for those rolls.
If you're looking for what class abilities fighters and rogues have, you check those classes in the basic rules or the PHB:
(assuming you're using the 2024 rules)
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-classes#Fighter
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-classes#Rogue
To be honest, even i dont know what rules im using. I just use 5th edition DnD i think? Idk because it just says 5 near the website name or whatever.
It just helps to be specific because 5th edition got a heavy revision starting in 2024. So there's the 2014 rules and the 2024 rules (often called 5.0 and 5.5/5.24).
They mostly resemble each other, but with specific differences.
Let's presume it's 2024, that's the current official version. The links Hingle gave have all the rules you need.
Yeah if you started very recently and you're using online resources, chances are good it's 5.24
DnD is very confusing from what im seeing, i search one thing and go to atleast 5 other pages because i dont know what advantage is, and i still dont. I learnt atleast 1 thing that i didnt even know existed, aka multiclass.
Have you read the rules from the start?
Roll with advantage:
Roll twice, take highest.
-# (i think. im new as well so dont quote me on that.)
And you actually learned something I don't understand, since i've never really bothered researching into Multiclassing yet
-# Keyword: Yet.
It's generally recommended to not bother with multiclassing until you've grasped the game as a whole.
Yea that's what my friend told me
I'm "new" but not like... completely in the dark abt it? Idk, I've had a base level of knowledge for a while, but never really put myself into D&D like some of my other friends have.
As said, start at the start, take it in bits, use the Handbooker Helper videos if you like. Here, I wrote something only a little tongue-in-cheek earlier:
- What is dice?
- Ability scores and you: how to get stuff done.
- Anatomy of a character (sheet)
Get the basic terms down, then try bolting a character together for practice. Take your pick of class, species and background.
There's no specific line marking "new" from "not new." It's sort of a vibe, that's all.
Spectrum :P

Is there a ability to organise real life D&D sessions here. Look on #channel-guide and couldn’t seen anything
unfortuantely not really.
You'd have to look around for gamestores or even library's in your area that has a d&d night
Thank you give it a go!
No problem! Good luck 🤙
Hey, I have a question about a problem player; I'm hesitant to talk about it on a big Discord though. Can folks DM? thanks!!
If you keep it to general terms, you can ask for fellow DMs advice in #dm-discussion
This channel is more for new to D&D folks to get help with core game mechanics and rules as they start out.
oh i'm not a DM, i'm a player lol. but heard!
Ah then I'd ask the DM about the issue - a good DM should be able to pause the game and discuss appropriate player behavior/character behavior in their games and the general table expectations.
If they (the DM) don't do that or disparage your concerns, that's a sign it's time to find a new group to play with.
i found an open seat in IRL, it will be my first time playing. are there any things i should buy/get so im not missing anything important
If you're using a digital character sheet, then no not really actually. Maybe a set of dice because I have much more fun using actual dice instead of digital
I always advise having something to write on. Notes save your life
hey i am new to dnd and i learned it from online videos and thinking of hosting a session with my frinds but have many questions , is there any experienced dm which would be willing to help me in dm?
ask away ^_^ DM's open
hi guys, i have just started D&D, any tips to get started?
where are you looking to start? are you looking for a game to join? or are you looking to learn to play with your friends?
btw is there anyone who know how to use online tools like avrae, roll20 and owlbear rodeo?
where is a good spot to make my charicter ?
D&D beyond is the most official place, but you can also find form fillable PDF's to write right onto the sheet
aside from hexblade warlock is there any other good ways to make a spellsword?
i am kinda liking the idea of a wizard who enhances there sword with magic and wears heavy armor
is that posible ?
bladesinger wizard is pretty good, but a caster in platmail who enhances their attacks with magic?
thats a paladin!
uh uh thats fair i was thinking like lighting fingers in one hand and a sword crackaling with lighting in the other hand a person obsesed with the arcane a man who has lived in exile wandering the lands for many years
-# ive tried to make that exact character before
iirc it was a fighter wizard multiclass? I think
tell me more about bladesinger wizard
im interested in that one
or where can i learn about it ?
or is there like a war wizard or somthing ?
What do spells that have a action as casting time do usually
And what do spells that use bonus action do
I don't think there's an exact "rules" for what is or isn't an Action / Bonus Action, but generally there's less bonus action spells, and they tend to be less about direct damage or major effects, and more about conplimenting stuff you can do as an action (such as misty step to get close or run away, then use your action to follow up), or do things that then require an action (shadow blade is summoned as a bonus action, which can then be used with the attack action)
And Actions spells are the rest and do whatever, really. But overall there's not a major difference, just design decisions
Ok
from what I've seen, bonus action spells aren't necessarily amazing in a vacuum, but are good because they do what they do as a bonus action
I like reddit.com/r/battlemaps to find inspiration
Still looking for help?
Here, we have #dnd-maps. Razorwing also listed some resources: #dm-discussion message
ah, yes, sorry i was a bit busy with school work to respond.
^-^
so, as i stated in the comment i posted, i just started so I have NO idea on how anything works in the game.
hey, I hope you enjoy your time with dnd. The basic rules are a good reference, but in my experience, the smoothest way to learn dnd is while playing in a beginner-friendly party
I second checking the basic rules. Link for reference: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game
Indeed, the beginners rules are the place to start
But, you will need people to play with! Whether you're the dm or a player
does your character have to be a certain group? (such as a healer or a fighter)
Kind of? You have 12 classes to choose from, each granting a unique set of abilities
ohh, ok
also, where can i find places to start D&D games? I cant find any websites for it.
Well, games are advertised here in the find a game chats, and there are plenty of other places theyre advertised too, like d&dbeyond, roll20, startplaying
I myself am running an adventure quite soon aimed at newer players with a seat open, though it is a pay to play
But i would be being disingenuous if i didn't mention that there are many other free options put there, of varying quality
alright, thanks for the help!
All goods ^_^ i can provide some links if you like too
I just love seeing new players get into this game 🥹

Hello! I'm very new to the game and have a stupid question lol. Aside from the d20 what do you use the other 6 dice for?
Mostly for damage or bonuses from spells
So when you want to check if you can do an action like you have strangth check for example you just use the d20?
?tag new dice
Dice
Dice add randomness to the game. The 20-sided die (d20) is the most important one you’ll use. When the outcome of an action is uncertain, the game uses D20 Tests to determine success or failure. The higher your roll, the more likely it is that you succeed. The most common use for dice other than the d20 is to determine damage.
When you need to roll dice, the rules tell you how many dice to roll of a certain type, along with any numbers to add or subtract. For example, “3d8 + 5” means you roll three eight-sided dice, add them together, and add 5 to the total.
Thanks!
Hello nice to meet you. I’m new around here especially these parts and I’ve been a fan of D&D for a while and I’ve been in campaigns, but let’s just say I have a bit of a problem with my indecisiveness plus the hard time of making decisions but however, through where these people that kindly put me in in their campaigns and I had a blast and I get to see them in physical person which also helped my first character that they made, and this was premade so I can get to understand it was a rogue halfling
And they asked me how did I like it or not and I said yes I have fun
And honestly, I really like fantasy
Welcome aboard!
I will say the other players they had their own characters so we had a dwarf wizard an Eldritch knight fighter was an elf and then a human cleric we were using 2024 rules and I played a halfling rogue and honestly, I really liked rogue
I’m new to the group have played a total of two campaigns currently in curse of strhad but I am willing to join and learn more if anyone has any campaigns for a sorta newbie
I don’t think I’d call someone who’s played two campaigns new. Check out #find-a-game if you wanna find new campaigns .

Well, there is a place where I’m from. It’s called moon dragon. https://moondragonden.com/
Oh I see thank you very much
They even have a discord server if you want me dm you it also by the way, my favorite Warhammer faction blood Angels I see you wanna play dungeon dragons my primach
I see you have quality taste side note that’s a really good profile pic of Sanguinius
Ok small question, i wanna be a Rogue. Basicly to get a sneak attack, i need advantage. Do i have to ask the DM to roll for advantage or is it from my attacks? (attack plus damage)
You'll need to ask if you have advantage, if you do, then you roll 2 d20s, take the higher roll and add your attack modifier to it.
Ok thats way more simple than i expected to be honest
Also read your sneak attack feature carefully. You do not have to have advantage if you have an ally next to the target.
Specifically an ally the is not incapacitated
Yeah i read that, tbh im tryna learn about Rogue before 11 april since i have a campaign starting then (someone invited me)
Another question tho, what does Milestone progression do? I genuinely dont know the diffrence between this and XP levelling.
Milestone to a certain extent is basically when your DM has decided you've progressed enough to level up
So basicly if i get enough exp the DM decides i level up
Kinda, XP is typically from defeating opponents in combat encounters.
From my understanding it's at the DM's discretion based on story progression and what your party accomplishes, whereas XP based leveling is more "fixed" by things like enemy's CR
what is CR-
Challenge rating, basically how powerful an NPC entity is
Ah ok
Hii so I just very recently got into DnD and I just filled my first character sheet like correctly, Ive only participated in 1 campain so im still started lol, wanted to know if anyone could tell me if it I filled it up correctly (and if I have to send the character sheet here or in character discussion lol)
#character-discussion is the better spot! D&D Beyond can give you a link to share, or you can upload your sheet to a site like Google or Imgur and link to it that way. Don't forget to explain said link!
ok!!
Technically, with other sources besides the basic player handbook, How many Subclasses can each Class have?
Each class has about 5-10 subclasses to choose from, if you include all the official source books.
If we are talking everything from the start of 5E in 2014 then somwhere from 7-14 subclasses not including artificer which only has like 5 official subclasses. If you just include 2024 5.5 source material then it's 4-5 subclasses each with a bunch more expected this year, mostly because Heroes of Faerun, PHB2024 and a new Eberron book are the only three 5.5E books I think that have come out with new subclasses so far. But with that said all the 5E subclasses are compatible with 5.5E with minor level adjustments.
I was gonna ask is there any D&D books do you recommend getting? if so, which ones
As a player? The Player's Handbook is a classic starting point.
But theoretically, you don't need any books to start. The free Basic Rules have all the rules needed to play.
Just ask, but are you meaning the 2024 version? If so, you’re absolutely right.
You have a sick profile pic
Question: What exactly would i need for my characther sheet? I know i need stats and modifier but what else do i need
Ok good to know
Yup, 2024 free Basic Rules.
And thank you
Hi
Wuts the power level of a level 9 spell
How do I find people to play with on campaigns
Pretty strong. The best way to learn exactly how strong is to read what some of them can do.

If you feel like you've got a good handle on the Basic Rules, the next set is to find a group! You can follow the link in the bot post above to get your search started on this server.
Oh ok do I reach out to people because im a player and I haven't played much because the people I played with before canceled campaign because life stuff
Yeah, you can reach out to people on those listed ads to see if they're still in need of players.
Or you can put an ad out yourself looking for a DM.
Oh ok cool thank you
Sorry if im dumb but how do I send message in looking for dm I can't send message in there i can only see the messages
The instructions in #find-a-game explain how.
Oh sorry again thanks
How likely is it for a random DM (say at a store or event) to run a lvl 15 campaign? I know people run campaigns that start at 3, 5, and 10s but not sure about 15s
My guess is low. The upper levels of the game are notorious for being tough to balance, on top of introducing a lot of complexity, which isn't necessarily great to entice people.
Thank you! Guess 10 is the "normal" high lvl people would go then
It also depends on the scenario. For something like Adventurers league, there may well be one shots for levels 11-20
But in that case, players need to have appropriate characters that they'd played up in AL
Putting your weapons, armour class and hit points there is needed for combat
Rolling for character stats 4D6 - for WISDOM, 2 1s, a 3 and a 2. Kill me 😭
That's a combined wisdom stat (once dropping one lowest) of SIX...
What's the class you're playing
A fighter, I'm working on porting one of my characters to DND (from my stories that I write)
Canonically that character is a sentient supercomputer so it's funny that they got such a low wisdom stat.
I mean you can make low wisdom work, but doesn't sound like it can for the character you were intending
Yeah, I'm totally fine with it though. Since they WERE a sentient supercomputer before their facility collapsed (they were a miles-large superstructure), I could always port that into their lore by saying instead of a collapse, their village was washed away in a tsunami on the shoreline and they suffered head damage.
I think I could still make it work, what say you?
That actually is probably your smartest play, have something that caused damage to them to explain why they're not overly wise
Ooooh I see!
Now for the hard part, just filling out the actual drawing I'm working on of that characters full reference LOL.
It's been a while since I've made a ref for this one so it's wildly out of date. SOOO begins the arduous process of drawing

Like I read the stuff but like I’m not sure what to do
Like how to actually meet people
That bot gives easy to follow instructions on how to find a group and or post what you are looking for. I suggest doing both
You can make a post in #looking-for-dm in the hope a DM will contact you. Or you could browse #looking-for-players and contact people with ads that interest you.
Thats the best (and only) way here. There are also plenty of Facebook groups, Reddit Groups, There are even forums in D&D Beyond and Roll20.net
Ok
If you want live and local, check your local library, gaming store, or even The NextDoor App
Check out your local gaming store, if there is one. I met my first DND group there and we ended up doing a 2-ish year campaign before real life got in the way.
Glad this exists I’m happy to be here and learning new stuff
Welcome!
#learn-to-play is quite helpful if ya haven’t read it already
I play in a group right now though sadly it’s slow
Wood elf Druid who just got my wild shape
Yay pride! Love that
i've mostly played 2014
but i'm a bit new to 2024 and is playing a monk
what do these mean?
specifically patient defense and step of the wind
Step of the Wind. You can take the Dash action as a Bonus Action. Alternatively, you can expend 1 Focus Point to take both the Disengage and Dash actions as a Bonus Action, and your jump distance is doubled for the turn.
Patient Defense. You can take the Disengage action as a Bonus Action. Alternatively, you can expend 1 Focus Point to take both the Disengage and the Dodge actions as a Bonus Action.
does it mean, i can do step of the wind normally without expending focus point?
but if i expend a focus point, i can also do both disengage and dash as a bonus action on the same singular turn?
You got it
You can think of it similar to the rogues Cunning Action, except you can "upgrade" it by spending a focus point.
Concern I used to play back in the old days of the 1900s
I’m giving away my age here. I’m trying the new style. It’s not bad though. They don’t have half elves anymore.
Getting rid of half-elves only recently happened with 5.5e, they're in 5e
I forgot which version my DM is playing, but I’m not upset about it. I can still have my elf.
I’m honestly just happy I have a group that meets up over here which is very rare where I’m located. I had more luck in America finding people.
Finding a cool group of like-minded people is a blessing. Some of the best times can be had if everyone is on the same wavelength when it comes to how they enjoy playing the game.
The only thing I’m really sad about is I’m the only woman player in it. I kind of miss groups of ladies, but finding that here is impossible.
I’m doing my best to not be den mom
Finding good in person groups seems abysmal nowadays
I've certainly not been in the hobby long enough to qualify this much, but to me it seems easier than ever with all the communication channels we now have.
iamrazorwing did a great job at collecting some this doc:

One day, hopefully! I think we're getting into better territory now, with D&D reaching more and more people.
Group of friends is the easiest option
I would love to play with my friends but alas, night shift 🥀
I would like at least one more lady but my gay friend plays a goblin lady
I’m happy they don’t think I’m nuts for dressing up as my character
Oh, that's quite a lot of effort to put into it! I've only seen that level in live play shows.
I’m a cosplayer it was up my alley
I’m pretty proud how it came out i ordered new elf ears but may not get here before the next episode
Uh hi, I just got to this server today and I would like to get some feedback on a character I made
I’m just gonna copy-past the notes I have to here if that’s okay
Owlin ranger
Name: Egohin silvertail
Nickname(s): long feathers
Backstory: Egohin was raised as normal as they could in his tribe, just that his parents were adventurers before him, they searched for food to feed the tribe since they lived on top of a large tree canopy, but when Egohin turned 12, his mother, Nimu silvertail, taught him how to use a longbow like her, Egohin was born with a talent for bows tho, so he got used to it pretty fast, and soon after started going with his parents to search for food, fortunately, it wasn’t all that hard, time flew by and now his parents are old and he’s in his 20s now, but when he heard another family was going to take over the hunting, he left the tribe since his only job was taken, now he is a full time adventurer walking around every town he can find, searching for a party to go with, just to see what being a “true” full time adventurer is.
Misc: Egohin’s father used the brass knuckles that Egohin uses now, same with his mother but her bow, she doesn’t have brass knuckles, no, egohin’s father did not teach him how to use brass knuckles, he just told Egohin it “inhales your fighting style”, he’s still trying to figure out what that means.
I would like just some feedback on him anyway you can see
Maybe some constructive criticism
Sure, that can work. Don't be afraid to put a full stop or two in there. Why not pop over to #character-discussion to work on their personality traits, bonds, ideals and flaws?
Thanks so much, I’ll try to do better on the next character I make
I’ll probably have to hang out here on the weekends because I have a feeling being in my time zone. Nobody is up.

Can a monk use/cast spells ._.
Theoretically any class can cast spells, but they have to have a way to get spells first. Very few Monk options give them a way to cast spells.
But, for example, Elves get a few limited spells as part of their species. An Elf Monk could cast those spells.
There’s the four elements monk subclass i guess
-# I wouldn't recommend the outdated Elements Monk for several reasons
Yeah, I will have to firmly agree with that
The Shadow Monk subclass has a few select spells they can cast as well, which are all great in the right scenarios.
I see, thank you
The Dungeon Master's Guide (DMG) is an official sourcebook containing guidance, special rules, and options for DMs. Learn more: https://dndbeyond.link/discordDMG
Most commands work in this channel. Is there something in particular you're looking for?
Where can I get the new DMG? This is the 2024 edition right?
Or is nothing shared yet?
You can find a good chunk of the 2024/5.5 DMG in the Basic Rules (scroll down to the Dungeon Masters section): https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
I was told by my LGS that the original/new 5.5e 2024 DMG and 2025 MM were cancelled to get a new edition in
At the supplier side and stuff
If you're looking for the most up to date DMG to purchase, searching "Dungeon Master's Guide 2024" online will get you what you want. It's the one with the big winged red guy on the front.
In fact, he was quite angry about it
Can't say I've heard of this myself.
Me neither until he ranted a lot about it too, said they cancelled it because the 2024 edition looked too much like 2014?
Here's the 2024/5.5 DMG: https://marketplace.dndbeyond.com/BB_Collection_25_101/3710000?pid=DB3710000
And the Monster Manual: https://marketplace.dndbeyond.com/BB_Collection_25_101/3711000?pid=DB3711000
They have not been canceled.
(Which I don't get either, seeing how MM and DMG read but o3o)
Well now I'm even more confused then...
Some people just like to rant.
Unless they're thinking about the special covers, but those have always been limited
Least I have the phb I guess
I do remember the MM coming out later because suppliers couldn't do all 3 at once, but that's very different from cancelled
Yesh, 2025, and in some stores when I was abroad in the UK they were in stock in 2026
I also have no idea what they would've been cancelled for, because 5.5 is the new edition
If they'd said that 5e books were cancelled for 5.5, that would at least make some sense
Well I sent the store a message sharing my confusion but no, he specifically mentioned 2024
Nonetheless, they are available.
I am afraid we're all confused including the store owner now
Maybe not that store specifically, but I'm sure you can find them elsewhere or online.
I did buy the PHB with a printed MSRP of $50 printed on it so maybe the new prints are $60?
I couldn't say. The cover of the book or the description on the listing are probably the best signs for which one you bought.

Oh btw how do I actually use the D&D Beyond character creator? Things like Circle of the Moon are missing. Or can I only make a paper sheet if I have the paper book?
Stupid question maybe, but the guide at #learn-to-play mentioned asking here so I'm giving it a shot
Subclasses like a Circle of the Moon aren't free. Until you purchase them on DnD Beyond, they won't show up on your list of options.
Each class has one subclass for free on DnD Beyond by default.
Ah so even the creator?
If you've got a paper book, you can either fill out a PDF manually, or use DnD Beyond's homebrew content editor to manually input all the information from your book (but this is rather complicated from what I understand).
I hate to ask about the rules but I'd prefer to keep out of trouble. Am I allowed to ask about third party character creators?
Or is that too pedantic to begin with? Seeing I'm basically asking if the rules are the paid content or of the character creator is part of that
You can ask about third party content here, we even have a #third-party channel.
Though I'm not sure exactly what kind of questions you have.
As a new player, though, I'd recommend avoiding third party and homebrew content entirely.
Ah, wait, maybe I misunderstood. Third party character creators. Unless it's officially affiliated with WotC in some way, no, that's against server guidelines
Oh ye I was afraid of that but thanks!
Forget that question then and ehm
Is the Druid really difficult? PHB states it's one of the harder ones
It's certainly one of the most complex classes, but no class is so complex that a beginner can't figure it out with some time studying the rules.
Druid is pretty complex, especially for new players. I wouldn't really recommend it personally unless you're that interested in playing it
Oh right that makes sense ye
My experience was it was no harder than a Thief Rogue
It's definitely much more complex than a Thief Rogue.
Oh absolutely, rogue is actually a pretty beginner friendly class 😅 it was my first class
... How do I know if I did something wrong? Because that makes me doubtful
Or is that a "figure it out with your DM" thing?
What do you mean "wrong"?
Like in general as a player? Like table etiquette?
Oh more as in, it felt the same creating both, so if one is more difficult, it'd make sense something went wrong right?
Or does that not make sense as a thought?
Oh like you made your druid incorrectly?
Yes
Not asking for a full in-debt look because I'd have to spam this chat and that feels like asking too much of people who aren't paid for that lol
If you're using dnd beyond to make your character, there's no need to worry about that really 😌
Oh sadly I can't so ye
DDB does an excellent job of helping you make your character
Ahhhh I see, that might be something you'd have to ask your DM for help with, just to make sure everything is correct
No worries about asking for help here, that's quite literally what we're here for. If I didn't wanna help folks new to the game, I wouldn't look at the channel!
Do you guys see it as worth the 30 just to get the normal stuff in DDB? You don't need it for AL right?
As for creating the character, yes, it's about the same level of difficulty between a Rogue and a Druid. The process of picking your options is more or less the same, just that the Druid also has to pick spells.
The difference in difficulty comes from playing the classes, especially at higher levels. Druid has a ton more complexity than Rogue on an encounter-to-encounter basis.
As a new player, it's not really important. It's more important to play the game and see if it's something you like, and if you do like it, then you can buy some stuff if you want
Oo that makes a lot more sense then, thanks!
I can see it, I wrote down spells I haven't prepared with page numbers which I didn't need to do then
All of the base player options are free in DnD Beyond via the free Basic Rules. If you're worried about not having access to stuff like the subclass you want, I'd recommend waiting until your character reaches level 3, which is when you'd even unlock those options.
That way, you don't pay anything until you have to, and then you'll get a good idea if you're even having fun with what you're doing.
... I had to start at 5 so AAA
Your game is starting at level 5? That's going to be more than a little tough as a new player.
... Which feels like a mistake on the DM's part now I think of it, as 2 people never even played another edition of DND
Obviously I understand any hesitancy in backing out or 'missing your chance', since finding a game is tough no matter what
But it's kind of like dropping a person who hasn't had the chance to learn how to swim directly into the deep end, you know?
Oh don't worry about me but I'll take this advice as in just use the book I have and some paper
Good luck either way!
Thanks! I heard there's another mechanic added at level 5 so I might need it
Oh... I do keep asking questions but ehm
Did the AL actually expect a level 5 character to have a bastion ready already yet? Or is that still a with DM thing? Or should I ask the DM for that? (Even if a little late now)
I've never played AL myself, so I couldn't say. Probably best to check in with the DM.
I will (and I will blame the store otherwise)
i've run a few AL modules/adventures. not as actual AL, though.
Hey, I’m newish to D&D and am trying to figure out a new character for the campaign I’m currently playing. I am just looking for advice/help on my vision and what to do.
I have notes but I’ll just give the quick rundown.
I want to play as an elf or half elf warlock Archfey. I want to be a eldritch blast sniper with crazy accuracy with elven accuracy. I don’t know what pact to choose but I am leaning towards pact of the chain with an imp. For my spells and cantrips I know for sure that I will take faerie fire and greater invisibility.
If anyone has suggestions or ideas for my spells etc please let me know!
Also let me know if this is the wrong chat 😅
If your primary goal is to prioritize Eldritch Blast, then your pact boon isn't really going to help too much one way or the other.
I'd also recommend chain, if you don't have a preference. It's great for utility outside of combat.
hi guys, i literally have 0 dnd experience but i tried writing a character and i was wondering 1. where can i put my character lore for people to maybe give feedback and 2. can i post google doc links despite joining like 5 minutes ago? i know the rules say that only permitted links are allowed for the first 30 minutes after joining
This is also what my dungeon master also said lol. My main inspo is Yu Yu hakisho with the fingergun. I just want to make sure I have good dmg to go along with my high accuracy.
Haha, I like the inspiration. Then yeah, outside of Eldritch Blast, I'd just pick options to focus on utility
Alr sounds good thank you! I’ll discuss it some more with my DM. Last thing, I have eldritch spear, agonizing blast, repelling blast, and maddening hex for my invocations. Do you think I should invest in the chain master one or anything else?
Just to confirm, it sounds like you're building for the outdated 2014 rules, is that right?
Then I wouldn't invest in Chain Master, especially if you're worried about complexity.
Sounds good, thanks!
#character-discussion would be the spot, and you do need to wait for the required 30 minutes before posting links!
Which core PHB spells would allow you to squeeze someone's liver?
Probably none? Most spells require you to see what you are targeting.
Similar thought process as you cant use create/destroy water to destroy the water that makes up a humanoid.
... I assume there's other restrictions right? It not mentioning a creature but instead an open container?
(Tho cutting someone's hands to see the blood and then destroy water-ing would be REALLY funny)
Spells typically only do what they say they do and usually require line of sight among other restrictions.
Spells and abilities only do what they say they do. There is some room for "rule of cool" but that is entirely DM dependent.
Actually a bummer but fair
A container is a container. An organ is not a container.
Spells like Create/Destroy Water that mention a container are specifically talking about an object and can't be applied to creatures.
You can flavor a spell as restricting organs though. Like, you can say you're a blood mage and Hold Person is holding the person's blood in place, thus rendering them immobile. But mechanically spells do what they say they do.
I am quite new to the spell page and kinda hoped I missed some necrotic spell or something but rip
Inflict Wounds maybe? Lemme think
@ashen shadow what do you want out of the spell? Just damage?
Oh there really is no spell mentioning specific body parts or mechanisms is there? Tho even "slashing" is no more precise than that one word I guess
No spells are that specific especially when it comes to against creatures. The best you can do is as mentioned, flavor spells To do that but with the DMs permission
There really weren't any mechanics in the game that allow you to target specific body parts or have effects related to them.
(There are some notable exceptions like the effect on a Vorpal Sword, but those are rare exceptions)
Similar example. Last night I cast command which has like 5-6 specific commands. I wanted him to drop his weapon so I said tie your shoes. Again not exactly what the spell said but DM agreed to it being a reflavor of drop (and yes I know it’s supposed to be one word,)
Yeah, a lot of people fudge the "one word" rule, lol. As long as the idea is simple
So cinematically it “looked “ more sensible than a dude just dropping his dagger for no reason
So Inflict Wounds allows you to Unarmed the liver after and with Cure Wounds you can squeeze it back to healthy?
Great way of flavoring it. Assuming your DM is cool with it. I’d be ok with it (as oddly specific as it is lol)
Either he is or I have a backup Magic deck
Oh that makes it sound like my enjoyment depends on that one specific spell flavouring and that is too funny to refute
I always flavored inflict wounds as it doing hundreds of tiny little paper cuts all over my enemy
It feels like there's a full encyclopaedia of spells randomly in Chapter 7 but I can actually work with this advice
Again I advise you clear the concepts with your DM before spending a ton of time and they say no thanks but I bet most would be cool with most things
Due to the... logistical "issues(?)"... with how nights seem to be organised in any place I found, i.e. people can choose whether they wanna go each week, I wanna make more than one character with the loose rule 0 I got
(And I have no idea if I will ever see a player or DM ever again)
Have you checked out and then posted what you’re looking for in #find-a-game ?
Well I found some places and ono online was never my thing
I actually possibly have done so before on another account if this served existed maybe 8 years ago? I remember playing a few
But ye, thanks for the advice!
Got ya
I feel like I'm cluttering this place up but...
Is Str the worst stat in D&D? Just for any class that doesn't use it
Oh and to add to this, why do some people recommend against having two stats at 8?
Any suggestions on helping getted started?

I think its intelligence in my opinion. Its only really good for wizards and artificers. But strenght is good for paladins, barbarians, fighters, some rangers, clerics
Oh damn! I thought I was going mad as I did find some articles saying Cha is much worse than Int!
charisma is one of the best in my opinion. good for social interactions. And its really good for warlocks, sorcerors, bards and paladins
HIGHLY Depends on your class Each class has 2 attributes that matter and a third that sort of really matters. The melee classes either use strength and constitution with dexterity third or dexterity and constitution with strength third. casters are intelligence, wisdom, or charisma (depending on what type of magic) along with constitution and dexterity 3rd.
whereas intelligence if you are not a wizard or a artificer is only good to recall information or knowledge. Or to resist mental attacks from spells or magical effects that target your brain directly
Oh ye I guess all stats are good for the classes using those stats most often
yeah, it all depends on what class you are really
Just to be sure tho, Int is a saving throw for Druid but no reason to invest in that right? (It's the weirdest saving to me but I might be missing something)
Druids tend to want to have higher intelligence to have a greater understanding of the world around them: history, arcane, nature, religion. These things ALL effect the world the try to protect
Is having a lot of points in Int better than just Magician?
magician is not a class. But a wizard and artificer are the classes that usually choses it as their highest
the reason is what you make it to be. If you deem your character should be knowledgeable about history or arcane or religion. Its totally fine to not invest in intelligence, even if the class comes with saving throw proficiency in intelligence. Wisdom should be your highest tho
... PH.80, Primal Order
Ah right, that feature is mainly to help druids keep up on knowledge checks as the party caster, since Int will almost never be their focus.
Oh ye, that for sure! 18 Wis at 5 feels nonnegotiable
OHHHH i see what you mean. No the spells u cast from the Magician rely on your INT
That's not how Magician works. I think you might be thinking of Magic Initiate?
oh yess... i shouldnt be doing thre things at once lol. u are right Hingle
Wait that confuses me just as much. "Intelligence, Wisdom or Charisma is you spellcasting ability for this feat's spells (choose when you select this feat)."
PH.201
that feature pretty much allows you to put more points in stats other than intelligence, but still be good at making rolls for arcana and nature checks. Because a lot of people dont put a lot of points in intelligence, but they still want to roll good for nature checks
Or am I going mad here?
No, you had it right. Mitcho was confusing Primal Order (Magician) with the Magic Initiate feat
Magic initiate is a feat, and when you take the feat you choose which Ability Score powers the spells you gain by taking the feat.
So I still don't see the strong ties to Int there either...
Or did I lose the plot?
Primal Order Magician:
Higher wisdom means better arcana and nature checks which give less reasons to have high intelligence as a druid
Magic Initiate feat, is to choose spells from different classes. For example, if you were a druid and wanted to have a few wizard spells, you would take magic initiate wizard, which your stat for using these wizard spells would be intelligence
Correct. Druid doesn't have any hard ties to Int.
You can technically dump it if you want to. It depends on what kind of character you want to make.
I hope that made sense
It indeed does ye. Just some noise and confusing mid-convo lol
All good! It happens, this is a big server, lol
So it is a saving throw but depending on your origin, it's not too useful? That is what I suspected but ye
all good. It would be easier to explain things to each other if we were all sitting around a table together lol
So when are we?
And are we talking 3d? So everyone can fit
Can a tribune and podium be considered table and chairs?
Yeah. Druids have proficiency in intelligence saving throw, which gives them a little boost to better resist effects or spells that target their intelligence. Thats pretty much it. For the rest, putting more points in intelligence wouldn't give you much ESPECIALLY if you choose the magician primal order which change a few intelligence checks into wisdom checks (more or less), which gives you even less reasons to invest in intelligence
but, if you wanted to go in a direction for your character where they are very smart and they know a lot about the world and succeed on a lot history, arcana, religion or nature checks, then you could put some more points in intelligence. That would have a bigger impact in roleplay moments
Actually, how would some of these work? Where would History come from if you only grew up in your local circle? Wouldn't booksmarts of your realm do more than observing and learning in your local ecosystem?
I guess it depends on how you spin it either way though
Book learning is pretty much what proficiency in knowledge checks is.
I did not think of the intricacies regarding intelligence vs more in-tune with nature, animal-like or the like learning
