I clicked the spall tab and don't see any spells
The 1d4 or 1d6 refer to the damage dice used by those weapons.
Ok how about now
Not bad! You can check with folks in #character-discussion if you'd like more feedback and suggestions.
hello guys i just started and got this dudehttps://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/146121771 is that ok?
You have it set to private. You'll need to change it on the home tab of the character editor.
If you made it in D&D Beyond and didn’t give them any crazy magic items it’d probably be fine.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/146121771/X75KpB now its set to public
thorfinn ty shi
anyways ts mad confusing ion know wtf to do i gotta wait like 6 business days to find a game and have it be beginner friendly and not 18+ 😭
hopefully just as brutal
You're missing equipment (or gold), skills from your class, and spells. And these look like rolled stats, which won't be accepted if not witnessed by the DM.
it gives me the option to get starting equipment
and the stats are not rolled i handcrafted this abomination thats why im here
I'm signing off for now, but if you don't get feedback in this channel, you can definitely check in with #character-discussion!
so how does the "looking forDM" work?
It's a channel for players to make posts looking for DM, where DMs might look through and find players if they need any
Check out #find-a-game for instructions
Whats the difference between 2014 and 2024 rules (Im new and dont understand why its in a lot of the dms things)
I know there alot but you can just dumb it down to a gist
Not a whole lot of difference - mostly 5.5 is refreshing and polishing up of 5e.
Probably the biggest one for players is that characters all pick their subclasses at level 3.
Appreciate you🫶
I'm looking for a game where do i post sorry?

Hey is 5e compatible stuff a good jumping off point?
Especially as a beginner dm or player
Yo Anyone know where to go if looking for a group to play dnd with?
Thanks
I have a question about something I still don’t fully understand, can classes that can both weapon attack and cast (rangers, paladins etc.) have weapons in both hands and still cast during combat? Since some spells need somatic components, but sheathing a weapon is a free action as part of an attack, so could it just be said that a character hides their weapon after attacking the previous turn to cast in the current one?
If the spell has a somatic component, then the caster must have one hand available to do that. As casting a spell is not a weapon attack, you do not get a free sheeath/unsheath as part of the attack action (that free switch of weapons only happens when making a weapon attack). There may be exceptions if the spell specifically calls for the use of a weapon as part of the spell attack.
You could use your free interaction to sheathe a weapon, cast, and pull it back out in your next turn as part of an attack. I think.
Yeah I think that works
How do you create a post in "Looking for DM"?
Here's my whole thing for reference. That particular question is answered in the second paragraph:
Check the listings in #looking-for-players for games that want people, read the details, respond as appropriate and cross your fingers.
Type /looking and select the option for #looking-for-dm to advertise yourself as a new player in search of a group. Be sure to include your regular availability!
There are other Discord servers where people gather for games. You can find them in #looking-for-community .
Aside from here, you could also try LFG areas in sites like Reddit, Roll20 or the D&D Beyond forums to get started.
I don’t think you can get those stats by point buy
yeah, even with background, that's 35 of 27 points
whats point buy?
You start with 27 attribute points that you can assign to any stat you want, which all start at 8
Your final stats add up roughly the same as standard array, except you have more freedom
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character#Step3DetermineAbilityScores here's the rules for determining Ability Scores
Hello I was wondering how I could make a horse character work?
But they are a full horse
Otherwise you would need to work with your DM to homebrew it
Flavoring is free but ultimately you do need two hands and two legs somehow
Otherwise you're just rping as a talking horse that's forced to scroll on your phone during combat
also barding is pricy q_q
I was planning on being a rogue that would just whack people on the head
How does a horse pick locks though
To be fair “I’m an awakened animal” is a character concept that goes back in DnD as far as the Awaken spell does, but generally you can’t build it strictly according to the rules
It requires some DM buy-in and the understanding that you’re not as effective and versatile as the other player characters

hey so i been looking into joining some campaigns but there all asking for money is that userly what happens? im not sure to do it because if its a scam
There are many DMs (myself included lol) have become what is considered a Pro DM - Aka we get paid to do it. If they are heavily talking about their campaign and they charge $x per session, that is very very likely legit. if they seem pushy and trying to charge for anything else, probably a Scam. If they are a Pro DM and you may be interested, they should be using legitimate sites like StartPlaying or Patreon. That way you can for see they are legit, and feel secure that it the money side isbeing handled by a third party
i see thank you! im new to dnd and im not sure if i should put alot of money into it just incase i dont like it >~<
There are advantages to a paid game. I won't bore you with that lol. The place to hold off investing is in like books and other things (dice, game, etc.) until u know if you like it. Paying to play is a smidge different. If you dont like it, you stop playing and stop paying lol (you can message me if you want the deeper info and no I won't solicit, just not gonna clog the channel)
perfect thank you!
Heya. I'm relatively new to D&D and wanted to ask if there's something like mock campaigns that people can join to get more familiar with the game?
would love to know as well haha, ive never been able to get anyone to play!!
Don't think there's a mock campaign but I think the closest result would be a one shot open to new players
#learn-to-play has an interactive adventure called Before the Storm. Might be what you're looking for.
There's also the learn-to-play sessions offered through the virtual weekends. Other servers like Altrole and D&D Newbie Sessions have similar offerings on occasion.
Anybody free to walk me through my character sheet and basically let me copy off them 🥲🤣

Hello, I'm brand new to dnd and my friends wanted to play a jjk themes dnd game. I'm not too well versed in the terms and rules so if anybody has any tips I'd really appreciate it
I hate to admit it but the only thing I played even remotely close to dnd is a roblox game, so I know some terms like roles and stats but there are a lot of terms based on dices and stuff that I never had any experience with

Hello I am also brand new to dnd, I am a monk main but I don’t really know all the rules or skills just yet but I can play as fighter or rogue if need be. I do swear quite a bit but I am friendly and try to be kind.
I'd recommend reading the rules, specifically the first couple of chapters.
I also wouldn't recommend playing a monk if it's your first character due to its complexity. I'd recommend your first character being a class with low or average complexity, there's a table on which is what under choose your class in "Character Creation".
Mhm well honestly I play monk because well…the idea of using bare hands resembles my kinda idea of fighting since I’m heavily inspired by the film of Brick mansions (no spoilers)
This is just what I recommend doing as monk is more complicated to play because of the Ki points, you don't have play other classes if you don't want to.
Pugilist is 3rd party so gets even more complicated IMO
hi
anyone interested in being a player with me, i have some basic 5e knowledge, so i can still run simple mechanics, but i am mostly a narrative and wordbuilding person, also i play theatre of the mind, ideally english in my games, as my english is the best out of the languages i know
i welcome anyone, and i am happy to learn more 5e mechanics
I’m a fellow newbie so I can join if you want lol
Hi
hmm, so how are you in dnd, and are you interested in more "emotional" dnd campaigns
Maybe
Soon
(i do not have any other players)
I can call if you want
ok
You should check out #find-a-game if you're looking for a group, and take any discussions to private messages
Soliciting games outside of the lfg channels is against the rules of the server

Try having a read through the first couple of sections of the Free Rules to get a grasp of the terminology, then have a go at putting a character together for practice.
You'll need to pick a class, species and background. Let us know if you have any questions!
so, there are maps within the adventure book. certain places don't need maps. generally, maps work best for combat with multiple enemies or in situations where it really helps for players or the DM to point at things. like, the PCs are in a tavern and ordering drinks and food you don't need more than verbal stuff about where they might be. the fact that the bar is 20 ft away from their table, or the exact layout isn't critical.
you can grab some pieces of paper (possibly gridded paper) and tape them together to draw out the maps you need for combat.
Yeah Ik about the maps in the book I meant do the players need to have a map or is theatre of the mind enough or smth cuz I've heard abt it
Well thank you
Alrighty! Im working on it on Roll20
That's something you should ask whoever you'll be playing with! Some folks struggle without some kind of map/visual. Others don't have a preference.

I've had an idea for a magic item, but upon looking it up, a version of it seems to already exist.

Hey i was wondering if there is a place to find dnd campaigns in person? Like websites or something. I feel kind of awkward just walking into a game store and I have tried online and its fun but I kind of want to meet new people
I know folks have also had luck with Nextdoor.
That's where I created and got my players (Nextdoor)
Maybe your local library may have postings and / or will let you post about it
Halo guys
elo
Wasup bro
Helo guys so umm quick question. Im a new player and i want it to join my first online session. Should i go look for a game in #looking-for-players or #looking-for-community what’s the difference?
Looking for players is your best bet
Salutation D&D Players and Travelers, my name is Roxas Waber, I'm not that new of the game but i recently got back to be interested of coming back playing D&D. I Stop playing over a months or year ago. But I wanted to get back and have fun again. So my available game time is Thursday night till whole Friday. If anyone have an opening for me, i would like to join to play again. please let me know if there's a spot for me. See you in my new adventure to join, with new character for the game.
Hello
#find-a-game has instructions where to find games here
And hello!
There is a lot to look at, lol
Yeah can be a bit much at first but you probably won't need most stuff
Yeah... Slowly picking through to find what I do want to make it a bit easier
Try having a read through the first couple of sections of the Free Rules to get a grasp of the terminology, then have a go at putting a character together for practice.
You'll need to pick a class, species and background. Let us know if you have any questions!
Got a lot of that figured out... Ended up stumbling in here so I can find myself a group to play with since I got absorbed into the creation of a new character... I'm not incredibly new to D&D... But I haven't had many opportunities to play yet. Already got my eye on the looking for group channel
Aha, Stage Two:
Check the listings in #looking-for-players for games that want people, read the details, respond as appropriate and cross your fingers.
Type /looking and select the option for #looking-for-dm to advertise yourself as a new player in search of a group. Be sure to include your regular availability!

Anything Ive learned just comes from Baldurs Gate
You can try facebook groups, perhaps there is a local reddit thing for your area where you can post. Or try posting on Groupfinder. Multiple options to try
Hey evb
I'm totally new to all this dnd stuff. I was looking at the basics and was wondering how building your character looks like? I get the basic stuf like race and different...specialties? If I were to call them that. But could somebody explain to me more closely how it works and how to process of building your character affects the later game? Thanks!
Basically, the primary 3 parts to building a character are:
- Species
- Background
- Class
Species usually offers some flavorful and fun abilities, but rarely affects your gameplay. These abilities might get a little bit stronger as you level up, but only for specific species abilities.
Background grants you some base bonuses to your normal abilities. These don't get any stronger as you level up.
Class is where the vast majority of your abilities come from. As you level up, these are where all your progression is. It's the most important aspect of your character that decides what your gameplay is going to be like.
It's worth looking at the species features to see how well they jive with your intended playstyle. A goliath wizard might enjoy the benefits of their specific lineage, but their other features (get Large, advantage to escape a grapple) might not be as useful as they could be for a fighter, for instance.
Hmm and class is what exactly?
Hey, I’m a realitivly new player, and I’m making a conquest oath paladin, but I don’t know what race I’m going to use any pointers?
Type of charecter like fighter, wizard, rouge
And so on and so forth
How do you make skill modifiers? Do you subtract 10 ten devide by 2?
I apologize, I don't really understand your question. Can you clarify?
Are you asking how to calculate the modifier for an ability score?
Basically yes.
Hi, I'm fairly new to D&D.
I've started to make character sheets but am very self-conscious; there might be stuff wrong in my current character sheet. Was wondering if anyone with better knowledge than me would be willing to check it out and give some pointers
Did you make your character on dnd beyond? If so send over a link to your character sheet
Yeah, you can share a link to your sheet over in #character-discussion to get a basic review.
I'll do that then. Thank you both
Hi! I’m new to DnD and just went to my first beginner taster session today to have an idea of how it works. I want to start hosting sessions in person but want to learn more about what it takes to do that. Anyone I can PM to talk more about this? 🤗
#dm-discussion is always open!
"hosting" as in providing a space for D&D to happen, or as in creating and running a game?
Both!
Then I do have some useful resources I can point to in a PM instead of dumping into the room here.
Hi! I'm new to DND.
Any Vietnamese players here? I'm looking for a group.
Maybe check out this Facebook group? https://www.facebook.com/groups/DnDVietnamGroup/
How should I start dnd ?
I am training to become a writer and would like to play dnd as to help with my ablity to explore and create world's
Just wanted to say, hi and nice to be here, i love explaining dnd to newcomers so feel welcome to tag or dm me if you wondering anything?
Well first you need a group
What exactly does a group mean ?
Here are some options. Pick one (or multiple, if you like)!
- You could read through the Free Rules.
- Or read #learn-to-play.
- Or play the demo.
- You could watch some games played on YouTube or Twitch just to see what it's like in action. (Podcasts also work for this purpose.) Don't expect your home game to look like a professional production, though!
- Or you could watch the Handbooker Helper videos (or WASD20's Rules School) on YouTube. Caveat: the videos are for the 2014 rules. The fundamentals are pretty much the same between 2014 and 2024 rulesets, though.
- Or you could sign up for a learn-to-play session through the virtual weekends linked in the server's Events channel.
Quite literally just people who wanna play with you
Ohh I see thank you
I watched a few tutorials but I couldn't understand them properly . Should I watch a campaign or should I just keep watching tutorials
A tip is first ask friends you know irl, or look for online groups, most definitely will be people looking, including in this server
Truth be told in my region dnd is almost non-existent
I don't think a campaign will help with learning the game exactly. It'll just give you an example. The rules are where most folks start.
Fair, but there is always a chance that other people you know might wanna try it out
So I should read through the rules and then create a character accordingly or ?
That's a solid plan! Do remember that any character you create without a group is for practice. But that's still worth doing!
Is it okay if I put a character from a story that I have already created backstory / strengths and weaknesses of or should I create a new character that's better made for dnd
I don't really have many friends irl since I am a big introvert
Up to the dm of the game you join how much backstory they allow. In dnd you’ll need to adhere to the rules as far as classes and races, so that will to some degree dictate how your character is.
Don't try to force another character into D&D. Just follow the steps of character creation as described in the rules.
Would it be okay for me to join a group of strangers or should I focus on becoming friends with people first ?
Thats ok, like i said, you can most definitely find people who would wanna play online here
You can try to pick classes and races that best fit the character you have in mind though ofc
Do what you want, but its better to be comfortable with the people you play with
Read the rules and get familiar, then shop around in the lfg channels or other places to find a game that will fit you and is newcomer friendly. Then work with the dm to create a character that fits the setting and campaign.
Ohh I understand . So if I make a chaotic evil character in a tame world it would be awkward for the gm
Generally yes. Some campaigns are designed around being “evil”, but most are not.
I see so would it be okay if I were to make friends through dnd ?
Like becoming more comfortable as we play ?
Thank you all
Now I feel more ready for dnd . Tbh I was kinda scared that my weak communication skills would be hard to understand
But thank you all for your patience
You get better at any skill, including communication, by doing it!
Just follow the game rules, be polite and willing to compromise where necessary, and it’s a very easy game and community to get involved with.
Honestly half the reason I even wanted to start playing dnd was to able to talk to people more comfortably so seeing people so helpful is really great
I can see , with how polite everyone is .
hello
Hey, you doing ok?
yeah, you?
yeah, i havent played dnd before but i love the whole theme and finally got a pc a few days ago so thought this could be a good way to start playing it online

why cant i see those chanels in the discord? i can only see them from your mention?
ahh theyre also mentioned in find a game, my b
You can edit which channels show up on your side bar in Channels and Roles
i found a group in the looking for community tab that seemed great but all their events where really late/early? im assuming theyre in a different time zone. is there a way i can find an online group easier from my timezone?
i put together a character on a paper sheet and it was weird writing each spell down but not knowing what they all did. i tried d&d beyond app but it was buggy. do I need to carry books around to play when im newb and dont know everything?
You don't necessarily need to find a group in your time zone, just one that plays at a time that works for you
My group has people from europe and america, so usually it's early for some and late for others
So my advice is, don't look for specific time zones, but see what time the group's play time is for yours. This might take a bit of effort since lot of people don't use the easy method of automatically converting time, but looking for a group is gonna take some time regardless
If you're not paying for access to a digital platform or otherwise find them tough to use, having the rulebooks on hand for reference is one option. You can also buy cards with spell descriptions.
Hello
Welcome!
evenin. let us know if you have questions
Hi guys i have a genuine question so please don’t get mad at me. I have adhd and a hard time navigating all the things to make a OC. Now I wont do this if it’s a bad thing, but i wanted to ask would it be bad to use Ai for help? Like not to generate everything or create the character just to double check? I would write and draw and do everything on my own and then just put it in to ask if everything makes sense and i did it right. Cus I don’t have a party right now this is just for fun so no one i can really ask. And the last time i was part of a campaign and did ask i was pretty much ignored and everyone got kind of annoyed with me, so I’m a bit scared to ask others for help.
AI will give you bad, outdated, and erroneous information as it will try to please you
Better to just ask specific questions here and get relevant and generally accurate information
(as we are human we may make mistakes too but at least we won't be quite as bad as AI typically is)
You can ask for character feedback here or in #character-discussion
Make sure to read through the 2nd chapter of the free basic rules as it goes through the process of making a character step by step. Feel free to read just a bit at a time and ask questions here.
Free basic rules here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
Also #learn-to-play is a good spot to stop by and get a quick primer on D&D
Okay thank you!
I am very new to dnd and was wondering if anyone could help me set up my dragon born sorcerer in 5e?
hi if any cool rad gm or anyone who can tell me and my friends how to play the game i’d love if you could add me so maybe i can get a setup game up here
on paper or using dndbeyond?
paper
i tried using dnd beyond but i got a litle confused and my dm needed paper
does your DM want everyone to use point buy, roll for ability scores, or use standard array?
I think beyond gives you a page you can print out for your character sheet. not 100% sure though
Hello
i think roll but i dont really know
i tried asking him but he's busy rn
you need to break into his house to find out. he'll understand if you explain afterwards
ah. it might be safer to just go with standard array, then. that is a pre-rolled set of numbers you can put in where you want. on the upside it means your DM is likely to keep things as they are. if you roll, there's always the risk of getting a character that is very weak or very overpowered.
Hello :3
hey star
How are you guys today/tonight
Im doing well
anyways, i'll bust out my 5e phb and guide you through it in PMs so i don't clog the channel.
but I want to watch
ok just send a chat request
aw
ok. i'll be back in a few minutes.
in the meantime, do you have the actual paper in front of you?
Hi, I would like to get into DND.

hey im new to dnd any ideas on how to start i intend to become a game master for a custom group made campain my freind group had an idea for if you can help out i would be very greatful
I would suggest reading the free basic rules and run a free pre written like frozen sick
I am not a newcomer to dnd but I want to start a payed game on "Startplaying games". Do you need to have at least 5 reviews to even start it or is it more like a option that will help you a lot in the long Run?
Hello everyone. I am brand new to the game and have never played before. I am wanting to get into d&d but have nobody to play with. Looking for a group that is ok with new players. Adults only

Hi I’m new to D&D and want to learn
Personally I always recommend playing with someone who actually knows whats going on. Do you have a group already, or are you completely fresh?
I don’t have any friends that play and I’m the only one that actually wants to learn to play
Ah gotcha, that does suck. Honestly it can be quite the commitment to do a full campaign, so if thats a turn off I understand. Personally I dont hate online dnd, but it requires finding a group thats consistent and chill. I dont have experience in that.
Is any aspect of it that they would like to play but dont want to put up with the daunting task of learning from scratch?
I think a lot of people here would agree that before knowing the rules it seems like quite the task, but that in actuality it isnt that bad

Hey is a pre written adventures good for beginning dms? (I want to be on both sides a little bit of player a little bit of dungeon master)
Peril in Pinebrook is the one I find most suitable to pure beginners:
https://media.wizards.com/2023/downloads/dnd/Peril_in_Pinebrook_COMPLETE.pdf
Generally, it's advised. It's good to see what a "proper" adventure looks like before trying to make your own.
One thing though: it's not really advised to be a DM and a player at the same time. That leads to conflicts of interest. What you can do is do rotating DMing duties. So one session you play, next session you DM, and so forth.
Alrighty
If you must, though, you can use one of the spare characters from Peril as a companion to the party. Just remember they're a helpful extra sword arm, not part of the main cast. Let the players make the decisions and important dice rolls.
Alright ^-^ I just heard so many forever dm stories that most usually don't get to play much
Campaign takes months.
Same group is unlikely to be playing two campaigns at once.
So because you are the DM unless you're doing a different game somewhere else you probably don't get to have a PC and have to make do with the dozens of NPCs.
And then everyone has such a good time that you do it again.
Although keep on the borderlands I think has quite insular quests specifically with the idea to have a rotating DM?
Yeah, the idea is that it's easy to switch due to the nature of the caves of chaos. There are 11 caves that are somewhat self-contained.
I suppose it's slightly easier to switch here due to the shared world, though one shot anthologies such as Candlekeep Mysteries and Keys from the Golden Vault would probably work just as well.
Took me 5 years from when I started, till I got to play as a player. Forever DM'ing is a real thing
Is 8 STR, 12 DEX, 10 CON, 14 INT, 16 WIS, and 16 CHA good for a warlock? Pleae @ me since I have this server muted
It's fine.
I think my recommend spread would instead be:
8/14/14/10/12/17
Your certainly don't need a high intelligence as a Warlock, and a low Constitution will really hurt.
My High Elf heritage allows me to cast a Wizard spell with INT for it
Ah. Outdated rules.
Ah OK
I was using the Wiki for some character creation
Like Mage Hand or Prestidigitation
I chose minor Illusion
Does INT not effect those spells?
@timid locust ?
Intelligence only directly affects spells that make an attack roll or force a saving throw that you get from Elf.
OK, so they don't matter for non-combat spells?
In most cases it does not. The spell will tell you if it checks a statistic.
Here's the older free rules for reference: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014
I know therules, I guess it just skipped my mind. Thanks for answering
Hi im a newcomer
Welcome to the server. Let us know if you have specific questions!
Int does afect how eisily ppl can tell the spell is an illusion
If u want 2 use it I would recommend getting it with your warlock cantrips and get message or something
Heyyy!
I've made a character but I'm not to sure how to work out parts of the sheet. Like her saving throws n stuff like that. Is there a chance someone can have a look at her character sheet and help me out a bit?
We can help out here with explaining the basic parts of rules like Saving Throws, or you can check out #character-discussion for a more total review of your character sheet.
Okie thank you!!
Put simply, your Saving Throw Modifiers are numbers based on your Ability Scores. They determine what number you add when you make a Saving Throw, which is a roll usually used when bad effects happen to you.
Do you already have your Ability Scores locked in?
Yis! From memory I think my saving throws are charisma and intelligence. But on my ability scores I think they’re -1 and 0 😂
Unless I’m thinking of completely the wrong thing
Each class is proficient in two Saving Throws. That just means that you add an extra +2 when you calculate what you Saving Throw Modifier is.
For example, let's say your Intelligence Score is 8. That means that your Intelligence Score Modifier is -1.
Normally, your Intelligence Saving Throw Modifier would also be -1. But if you're proficient in Intelligence Saving Throws, then the Modifier would be a total of +1.
Ohhhh…. Right, okay I’m getting it!
So if say my intelligence score was 10, that would mean my modifier is 0… and then if I’m proficient in intelligence my saving throw modifier would be +2?
You've got it.
AMEN!
yuhp
Thank you 😁

silly question, but what is the Warlock's role in the party?
To be clear: party roles such as Healer, DPS, or Tank don't exist in DnD like they do in other RPGs.
Warlock acts as either a melee or ranged spellcaster, and has access to damaging and crowd control spells, but only a few utility spells compared to other spellcasting classes.
I see people doing a lot of different things with the classes

-# Whoever else that was, you owe me a soda
Thanks 😭🙏🏾
Mine went through first, so I think it's you who owes me!
just to double check if im multiclassing from monk where i use a d8+modifier to determine hp upon level, every time i take a multiclass level i use that classes formula, for fighter its 1d1+modifier
For each level you get in their class you use their formula
Correct. So if you're a level 3 Monk and a level 2 Fighter, you'll have the following hit dice:
- 3d8
- 2d10
Also good to note that at level one your health is the max roll of your hit die +con
So if you started with fighter and had the aforementioned levels spread you’d have 10+1d10+3d8 +5xcon health
thanks!
Personally I’d avoid multiclassing if you’re new, but good to know anyway
originally i was gonna avoid it and play monk when i thought we were 2024 rules but we're doing 2014 and it feels a lot clunkier to play so if i have to choose to attack or anything else im just gonna lean into attacking lol
Hi 👋🏽! I’m New to d&d and was wondering if there is anything else i need besides character sheets and some dice to get started with my first game?
Are you a player or the DM?
A player (for now >::))
Then dice, your character sheet, and a means of taking notes should be enough for starters!
Thank you

Happy adventuring!
You too

I have experience as a player but im doing DM for the first time, i need some advice on how to make a story and like a map
I recommend the Five Room Dungeon method. Make three adventures each using that with a narrative thread tying them together, you're in business.
For all things maps:
#dnd-maps can help generally.
Inkarnate for regions. Watabou.itch.io can help with villages and towns. Azgaar can get you a world. Dungeon Scrawl is decent for dungeons. Also, check Reddit if you just want a battlemap.
I dont full understand this
The Five Room method is a way of putting an adventure together to make sure there's exploration, interaction and conflict.
Would it be fine if my Goliath character was reef flavored to be a Cyclops instead of a giant?
That's one for your DM and the details of their setting, but it doesn't sound totally unreasonable.
How far can you actually go in making a dnd character, like what’s to much to give yourself in terms of backstory and past ‘power’? When it doesn’t affect you in the current game cus i feel like i can never do it right T^T
I usually tell people that if you're building a level 1 character, you should have a level 1 backstory
You were probably killing rats, not fighting dragons
That’s something i can get behind, but i had a friend for example who had a backstory that was about beeing reincarnated. So their current character was ‘killing rats’ but they where very powerful in a past life and I’ve heard that some people think that’s okay but also that it’s a bad thing to do and since I’m new I don’t wanna make any mistakes 😅
Preferences on that will depend on the group and the DM
Hello! Im a semi new DND player (have been playing for about a year) I would like two tips/things of advice.
- How to get better at combat!
- How to DM
So it’s not per-se wrong just something u gotta bring up with the DM?
Pretty much. Starting as mechanically superpowered is generally not a good idea (unless the game itself is starting at a high level), but if it's just flavor it's potentially fine
for dming advice #dm-discussion
as to combat, it's mainly knowing what your character can do, reading your abilities, thinking tactially, and planning out your turn prior to your actual turn; you should know basically what you want to do by the time its your turn in initiative
My quick version of DMing:
-
Learn the game rules (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024), at least broadly.
-
Grab a pre-written adventure (plenty are on DMsGuild), do some reading/watching (I'd recommend the Quickstart Guide, the DM section of the Basic Rules starting here, and this Ginny Di video), and dive in! If you want additional homework, I'd recommend plucking whatever seems useful from Matt Colville's "Running the Game" series. At least watch the first handful of his videos!
-
Don't feel like you have to memorize everything to get going. Jump in, make mistakes, learn from them!
Just remember anything can change before your turn so improv.
Have
Plan A For the instance that you get crit or taken to low health.
Plan B for the instance where you can deal damage or help a teammate.
Hi. A little new to DnD. Been playing for 4 months but I play both as a DM and a player. Ive been thinking about how I can make games more fun as a DM. I have incorporated roleplay but they sometimes are embarrassed. And when it's not their turn, they can sometimes get sidetracked.
Also when you are new or old be open to making mistakes. Planning something that might not work out or something that will really help. Mistakes and errors are the way you'll be better at combat so you know your scenarios better.
No 2 fights will be the same but a basic game plan for most fights really helps you.
Playing pretend can feel awkward, even among people you know well. Four months isn't a ton of time, so be patient, especially if these are all strangers to one another. Using a descriptive approach to roleplay (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/adventuring#DescriptiveApproachtoRoleplaying) can help some folks adjust between thinking/acting like their character and embodying their character.
Fun is so subjective that the best ways I've found to improve the game on that score are to 1) ask players what they find fun and weave in those elements and 2) pay attention to when players are most engaged and work those elements in more often.
Thanks. I feel like this could enhance the game for both me and the players
Just be patient. Don't rush them and if they are struggling just give them a bump of support
I've been playing for a while I feel a little awkward role-playing. Improv is hard
Another question. We only do milestone levelling in our games but I joined a new party and they're planning on doing experience points. If a party defeats one boss, do they devide the XP? Does the person who hits it the most get the XP? Or do we each just get the XP the boss gives?
Ask your DM how they plan to do it
Usually everyone would get an equal share of the total XP
Our decision of who's going to be the DM is all over the place for some reason. But I'm sure I'll figure it out after the first encounter
First time DM here, what some stuff i should buy?
Are you DMing in person or through a VTT?
In person
Other than dice, a flip-mat such as the ones from Paizo and some dry-eraseable pens in various colors will be very helpful.
If you don't have one yet, a DM screen and a copy of the Dungeon Masters Guide and the Monster Manual are also recommended.
hey guys i have a question , if somehow my friend party got wiped in the first session what should i do?
i heard some people said that i should step in as a god and revert time before the fight , and the other is them being captured by the enemies
Having them be captured can be a fine way, yeah. Then they can either make new characters to rescue the previous ones or stage a prison escape from within.
I would not recommend stepping in to resurrect them, because that'll just teach them that there are no real consequences.
alright thanks

If I want to shove or grapple that counts as taking the attack action right
As part of the Attack action, you'd pick Unarmed Strike. Then, you'd decide which type of Unarmed Strike you're making:
- Damage
- Grapple
- Shove
That’s what I was thinking, meaning extra attack, unleash incarnation, and flurry of blows (and other things requiring you to take the attack action) can be used off the grapple/shove right? Just double checking
As long as you can make an Unarmed Strike, you can pick Grapple or Shove, yeah
(Though to be specific, Flurry of Blows causes attacks but is not technically the attack action)
Thanks that confirms all the options I thought I had
Though it does raise the question can you unleash incarnation to channel flurry of blows through your echo, I suspect the answer is either no or dm discretion
No. Unleash Incarnation allows you to take one additional attack during your Attack action.
Flurry of Blows is a bonus action that allows you to make two Unarmed Strikes.
Can your echo use your flurry of blows attacks? I still think the answer is no but just to be sure
Unfortunately not. The Echo's description says:
When you take the Attack action on your turn, any attack you make with that action can originate from your space or the echo's space. You make this choice for each attack.
Because Flurry of Blows is a bonus action and not the Attack action, its not a viable option to originate from your echo.
Alright thanks!
Any chance I could jump into a VC with someone and get help with creating a character for my in person campaign? I have a bunch of questions and not the biggest at typing everything out, really would like someone who's versed in 2014 and 2024 because that's a huge issue for me and not knowing if I wanna go 14 or 24 for my build and wanna ask questions about both for druids, thanks ahead of time!
Also
Don't be alarmed by the deep voice as well, this is my wife's discord and I'm just using it because I don't have one 😂
I can't say it's very likely someone will be able to get in a voice call, since this server doesn't have voice channels.
If you do decide to rely on text, we can answer basic questions about the game here, and the folks in #character-discussion can help with overarching build discussion or look at your character sheet.
Yeah I meant like a direct call, and I appreciate it but it would take all day to text everything and I have to have it done by tmrw and I'm panicking 😂
Well, good luck. In the meantime, we're here to help.
guys in roll20 how do i add character that i already created in the game?
If it's on Beyond and you're using Chrome, there's a third-party extension called Beyond20 that can help. You'll still need a character sheet in the game with your name on for your token.
Otherwise, it's copying it all into a Roll20 sheet, far as I know.
oh mb i didnt see the import character in the character part , mbmb

I’ve been contemplating a few things having seen a few different takes but it does make me wonder which classes would work best with a Dragonborn that isn’t just for the thematic element, having delved a little deeper leaving me wondering if sorcerer might be a bit more complicated for those starting out. I’ve seen a lot of paladin suggestions considering the stats from the race in accommodation but I don’t really want to make the first character feel too limiting as to allow greater freedom to experiment and try to find my own take/style for them. Being much newer to D&D as a whole.
Any species can be any class. Is there a reason you don't feel like a dragonborn works for a sorcerer?
The Draconic Sorcerer subclass is also right there too
I don’t have anything against sorcerer for the more draconic theme, I personally feel like it would work well, the only thing is that I am not certain about how difficult such a class would be played in terms of newcomers.
?tag new complexity
Class Complexity
Below is a quick overview of which classes take the most effort to learn. Low complexity classes make for an easier starting point, while higher complexity classes offer more versatility. Any of these classes can be played by beginners, so pick whatever excites you!
Sorcerer could be harder, more of a use few tools to solve all your problems class
As the bot says, Sorc is probably not recommended for brand-new players
As I said, going from what I’ve seen, it seems to be one of the more complicated classes. Guess I’m just in this position on whether or not I should start with an easier class to understand and make my way towards sorcerer when I have a greater understanding of the games playstyle.
I think there are two schools of thought with sorcerer: on the one hand, you have fewer spells, so less to learn. On the other hand, given those fewer spells, you need to be more thoughtful of when and how to use them. Whether that's more or less complex is going to vary by player!
You will roll plenty of characters as time goes on. Put your Sorcerous ambitions on the shelf for now, and get your feet wet with a more straight forward class, allowing you to focus on the learning the game, and less focus on learning your class
Anything with spellcasting is going to entail more rules, so do consider that. And I think the chart has it wrong that wizard is medium complexity—but again, it's not an objective fact of what makes for a complex class.
Fair enough, I have contemplated on whether I should get Baldurs gate 3 and possibly use that as a way to test out a few different options to see what worked best but have been on the fence about that for a while since I can also see Barbarian working well for for a greater take of a violent nature of a red dragon.
Paladin and ranger give you access to magic but don't rely so heavily on it that you're scrambling through spell descriptions, so those can be a nice way in if the martials (rogue, barbarian, and fighter) feel too simple.
BG3 is based on the D&D rules, but they aren't the same thing. Worth keeping in mind.
For testing purposes, I wouldn't recommend it. There are differences between BG3 and tabletop. However as a training tool to learn the basics of the game, as a "simulation" of tabletop, it's great.
Not to mention fun, and one of the greatest video games ever made
Hey guys my friend wanted me to show you guys this text he needs help:
Hey Guys, im a pretty new DnD Player and I play with my friends sometimes. When we play, im the DM, because my friends dont want to/are too lazy tbh. But when we play its...not very coordinated and i sometimes for get things and all that, overall im not that great of a DM. Can anyone give me some tips to be better?
I had considered Paladin but until I could truly find my playstyle, I didn’t want to feel too limited through the oaths that would just limit the paths as I try to figure out a few things, deciding to have the character remain neutral as a foundation for wherever it inevitably leads to. I can see Barbarian for those wanting to place the more violent nature of a red dragon into their character.
?dmtips
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
What about paladin seems limiting?

That'll get you started. Know your prep, make any notes you need.
Okay thank you guys
The idea of Paladins being tied to an oath. (For example if you choose the path of devotion, it feels like you would have to ensure your character stays good aligned would it not?) I guess by nature it doesn’t seem like that much of a change but I suppose it falls into a black and white position just limiting the options you have to try and different ideas. I had planned to leave my character as a neutral as to offer that additional freedom to mess with which I don’t know if that would fall in line with a Paladin’s natures.
Effective paladins know what the tenets of their oaths mean, how to adhere to them, and when to atone for bending the rules.
Again not off the table but if you were trying the game for the first time, would you prefer the additional freedom to try and find your place amongst the rest of a group?
Oaths are nice RP inspiration, but they aren't explicitly necessary. I can think of only a few DMs that I have personally played with that care at all if a paladin even has an oath to follow.
In practice, many treat Paladin Oaths as more of an afterthought or RP flavour more than anything else - a reaction, possibly an overreaction, from the days when such oaths were very strict indeed (possibly a bit too strict).
Some DMs and players will certainly take Oaths very seriously.
In the end, best to just choose an Oath subclass either for mechanics, or for flavour/backstory reasons.
Of course, play what sounds fun to you. I agree with everyone else, though, that paladins in actual play are not as restrictive as your impressions.
Go with what you fancy. I bet you've already picked a class out.
Also in Ye Olden Days, Paladins could only be Lawful Good, and if you failed to be The Good Guy at all times, the consequences of breaking your oath were dire - you'd revert to a Fighter of the same level, and if you wanted to regain your Paladin status, prepare yourself for a long quest to get that done.
The consequences of violating your Oath in the modern era are nowhere near as punitive.
I had always seen every bit of media tie the both of them together to the point it just felt like an initial assumption. I guess that whole ideal was what turned me away from the idea initially. Originally my initial go to thoughts were more of a dragon sorcerer type, potentially using Baldurs gate 3 as a way to better understand the playstyles of certain classes in the hopes of finding a class that would work best combined mastering it was based off of 5e but I was leaning towards a dragon sorcerer before the complexity thing came to mind.
Despite the consensus on the difficulty of Sorc for new players, all it would require is a bit more study on your part, if you really want to play it. Which it sounds like you do.
The difficulty is really juggling those Sorc points
Yep. The common advice is play whatever you're excited to play, even if that means a steeper learning curve. Better to be jazzed than to pick something that doesn't sound fun.
I’m gonna be honest, I don’t know as much about any of the other classes as much and I don’t think Jocat’s “crap guides to D&D” is doing much to truly offer anything too much into detail outside of the main gist of each of the classes. I can’t say I’ve been able to get much without many other things slipping through due to the extent of it all.
The nutshell descriptions on the classes page should help somewhat: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-classes
Also the class overview chart: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character#ClassOverview
You’ve all been a great help, thank you.
I wanna have some fun in-between sessions. Is there a way to play solo-campaigns online?
Also, please don't suggest chatbots.
When you say solo, do you mean 1 player and 1 DM, or just 1 person alone?
Just 1 alone.
Oracle.
You don't need to be online to play solo. You would just need access to some of the solo products like The Solo Adventurer's Toolbox or DM Yourself.
What is that?
Yeah, but I'm kind of broke, only have dice and freely available stuff and self-DMing takes away the surprise.
To my understanding, that's what solo play is: you're both player and DM. And yes, chatbots are garbage for that style of play.
It's that or a Choose Your Own Adventure type game.
I think I'm basically asking for a Choose Your Own Adventure kind of game.
Aside from something like BG3, I have no recommendations available. Someone knows, I'm sure.
im DMing for the first time and im kinda overwhelmed, any advice?
relax. breath, and have fun. sounds cliche, but honestly best you can do. do not sweat the small stuff. remember you are the guide not the dictator. If you have fun they will have fun. if you make mistakes, so what, fix them right awa if serious, or keep going if thet ar minor, and "fix" them later
hii im new to dnd and all this stuff but im really excited to learn and play, dont know exactly how or where to start

How do i add a "looking for dm" post?
You use a command
See #find-a-game for instructions 😎
Your right, but do you have any advice for let were to start?
it would be really helpful if someone had like a list of stuff to get done
like by importance
because right now i am having problems not just looking at everything i have to do at once and get overwhelmed
are you running a premade game?
Start small. Build a basic town and the surrounding wilderness. Make a five room dungeon. Make a few important NPCs with quest hooks.
You don’t need to build the whole world before the campaign starts.
And you’re certainly not going to need a grand, heroic plot early on.
This guide is a good breakdown for new folks like yourself: https://howtogm.guide/

Im sorta new to DnD im doing my first campaign with friends but im playing a Dragonborne Barbarian and it doesn't really feel fun or anything since it seems im really only a tank while everyone else is doing a bunch of damage or just able to keep a safe distance im sitting in front of the enemies and taking all the damage it doesnt feel any fun for anything. Do I just have the wrong mind set?
It might partially be mindset and might partially be playstyle
When I'm playing a barbarian, I consider that I've done my job if I'm the only one who's taking damage.
But you also might just not enjoy that/want to get better at doing damage too
Sometimes some character concepts just don't play as fun as you'd hope due to the game context. I'd suggest discussing it with your DM and the rest of your group. Explain what doesn't feel fun and see if you can all find a way to make it more fun. And there may be an option of rolling up a new character to play if that's what feels like the best path forward.
Is there a way i can play with my character and my dice like on a discord call or something (i have a real dnd group but the dm never shows up so im trying to figure out how i can play😓
I think its cause everything does more damage then I expected and I dont have as much so I almost die while everyone else still have pratically full hp
?tag new online
I mean, ideally the rest of the party is also helping you stay side l alive while you tank for them. And if you like barbarian but just feel too fragile it might be worth talking to your DM about rebuilding with better Con/etc

Do you add your proficency bonus to every stat or only the ones you've marked on a character sheet?
Proficiency bonuses are not added to stats, but skills, saving throws, and various tools/weapons
For skills and saving throws, only ones marked
OK thank you
i got some quections about the level thingy- so for different classes, they unlock their subclass at different levels? (like Rogue at 3, Warlock at 1 etc) and each level you get new skills or basically something that helps you out...and your stats usually stay the same unless you get a certain level and you get 27 points to distribute within your stats with max being 15 right?
In the outdated rules, different classes got their subclasses at different levels. In the current rules, they all get them at level 3.
And yes, your starting ability scores are fairly limited.
ic, and could you explain this background thing?
A character has a background which provides mechanical features, a starting feat, and equipment.

Yo. I'm new...to like all of D &D 😅. Popping my head through the door and seeing what's up. So what's up? 😎
Welcome to the server! Let us know if you have specific questions.
Crying emoji? DnD that bad? 😅
Hey so I just looked up dnd races and there are like...57?!???
Is this true? It's including the rarer ones too but there are sooo many
Considering the game used imagination, I kinda figured that to be a lower figure haha 😅
There are a lot, but not all the ones listed on D&D Beyond are official. Some are third-party (i.e., made by other companies).
The free Basic Rules include 9, so that's probably a good number to start with!
For stunning strike it says they must make a con saving throw, is that just rolling a d20 + con modifier at 11 or higher?
The target rolls a Constitution saving throw, which is a d20 + their Constitution Saving Throw Modifier.
The number they're trying to beat is your Monk DC, which is 8 + your Wisdom Modifier + your Proficiency Bonus.
Thanks!

What the bones guy says
I was interested but since I am shy and not that social, I couldn't find anyone to play or interact with. I know some D n D know how but not that much at the same time
Yeah...similar boat. Not social and have no friends haha
Do people have slight or major main character complex here?
The free rules are good place to start learning the rules. Then #find-a-game can help to well... Find a game
So I can do whatever I want as long as it's approved by the dungeon master and within regulations?
And the table has to be good with it, I'd say.
To some degree. Because DnD is played with a DM and usually 4 players, there's a few things to consider at all times:
- Is it fun and interesting for everyone at the table?
- Is it legal within the rules?
- Is your DM willing to allow it?
Joke comment:
Can I summon a nuke?
Seen a few early critical role episodes. Looks fun. Some real classic fantasy adventure vibes. 😎
I imagine, in a homebrew that's sci fi and the story called for it 😂
You'd need a very, very lenient DM and table for something like that.
What I meant is like, something similar to a nuke that I still medieval in a sense
Makes me think of the mana bomb from World of Warcraft 🤔
chat what's initiative
Wipes Theramore out
My answer is still the same.
In DnD, the usual phrase you'll hear is that "abilities do what they say they can do". If you don't have a spell which replicates a nuke (for example), you can't just say you replicate a nuke.
Basically your speed I think, if your moving first before or after an enemy or ally
Do I have to roll a dice? Does it still apply her in discord dnd
so like what's the difference between that and the speed stat
Initiative is the order of combat. It decides who acts first and in what order everyone takes their turn after that.
You roll for initiative at beginning of combat.
Meteor swarm I suppose
I think speed is for dodging and attack speed?
Can you clarify what you mean by this message? I don't quite understand.
i thought that was the dexterity stat
Your Speed stat determines the distance you can move on your turn.
I think I am mixing up my knowledge from other medieval games
ohhh okay
I told yah guys I have some knowledge of dnd, but I know Wikipedia type knowledge
It's not*
D&D influenced lots of other games, but it works how the rules say, which is why we often recommend folks to read the rules through first and ask clarifying questions after!
I really don't mean to be rude here, but if you're not 100% sure of the answers to questions here, you can let some of the more veteran players answer them. Better than confusing other new players or giving incorrect info.
Speaking of speed. Do we move by tiles or by meters?
also how do i dm for my friend that wants to play a sorcerer when neither of us have played dnd before
Dnd typically uses feet and miles
Realistically it’s just a unit of measurement so subbing feet for meters shouldn’t change much
Do environmental factors play a big role?, genuine question
In movement or combat in general?
In anything really, like while I was looting a chest. A flood happens
I just wanna do the number 3 part
The rules are important. Otherwise, you're just making things up at random. Which you can totally do! It's just not D&D.
Yes they do. Environmental effects can be a big factor, there is drowning rules for your example, swim speeds, climb speeds. Difficult terrain and even certain environmental effects such as slipping on ice.
do I seriously have to read and memorize all the hundreds of pages of rules
You make stuff up, as long as everyone agrees (hence everyone has FUN rule)
No you just know the basics and go back to the rules if you aren't sure
Its not a test
Genuine question, do some people have slight or major main character complex?,
I don't have to exactly memorize what Warlock spells I can learn at level 5 but knowing what it means to roll with advantage is pretty important
Sometimes, but you don't have to continue playing with those people if/when you find them!
Can you expand on that question? What do you mean?
Being new here makes me look stupid 😢
Everyone starts somewhere!
I mean yeah some less than kind people do. It's not a major problem here if that's a worry of yours.
Don’t worry, ive been asking questions over the past few days and cant even word them right lol
Like they want the spotlight on them all the time and doesn't like that bad stuff is happening to them or they can't be killed cause 'Plot armor'
Tiberius from Critical Role springs to mind when you say that 🤔
Oh right that's fine, so ideally the DM (kind of like the referee of the game) will monitor this
Basically like any community there's a few bad members
Sure, there's players like that. Such play is usually frowned upon.
Unless the DM is deliberately biased towards someone, no one person has the power to swing a table like this for the most part
A good DM knows how to filter such players
It comes up a lot in horror stories cause that’s what horror stories are for, it’s just a spider George moment
Main character syndrome backstories will be shot down for example, and its up to the DM what a character gets
Question, if you die. Can you come back? Maybe as a different player or starting from scratch?
That John Wick inspired Fighter will not get a revolver 3 mins into the game and one shot everything
There are resurrection spells, but they may not be available in all games.
And generally you can create new characters unless a dm has some rule against it for some reason but I don’t think that’s common
Yes you can, typically DMs will let you come back with a backup character of the same level to join the party. Or alternatively the party may revivie you with a resurrection spell.
As a different character, yeah. You're the player.
Genuine question, this question makes me feel nice: what can I mix to get a swordmage class? That will not make anyone sad
There's always ways to soft cheat out the process of coming back too -- John Baldur the Human Fighter might not be able to come back, but what about Henry Baldur the Human Fighter?
Just pick the bladesinger subclass on wizard!
Hexblade warlock springs to mind as well 🤔
I usually main swordmage if it's available in a medieval game I find
Do you want more sword than spells or the other way around
There's plenty of classes that deal with swordplay and magic at the same time. Ranger, Paladin, and Warlock come to mind first.
Bladesinger wizard, hexblade warlock or I think college of swords bard would all classify as sword fighting proper mages.
Another question, how do our characters look? Do I send a drawing or image?
You should discuss this with your DM
You can do either, yeah. Your DM might not require either.
Eldritch knight fighter is also an option
Well that's more fighter first, mage after
I see a lot of people recommending subclasses, and specifically ones that aren't in the free rules. Let's stick with basic options since we're the #dnd-newcomers channel here
What about starter weapons? Can it be inherited or randomized? (Inherited means the character got it from family or ancestors)
Yeah, you're right I suppose. Sorry.
Your standard starting equipment is listed in the rules
But there is an option to take gold and buy what you'd prefer instead
Was just saying what seems like what this person is looking for.
I have no idea which subclasses are basic or not haha
Generally speaking, the ones in the free rules because they're free
Basic ones means they're present within the free rules (or the Player’s Handbook aka PHB)
You can describe your weapons however you want, but your starting gear is all basic stuff. You can say "my grandfather gave me his sword" if you character starts with a sword, but you can't say "my grandfather gave me his super cool magic sword" if your character starts with a sword.
Do characters have their own signature moves or Ults?
I better look out where to find these rules huh. Bit unsure about finding a party though 😅 bit shy on that.
Characters only have the abilities that their species and class grants them.

Welcome! The best place to start is with the free Basic Rules, linked in the bot post above. As you're giving them a read, we'll be happy to answer any specific questions you have here in this chat.
Sort of, there's special class and subclass specific moves I suppose. You'd have to elaborate on what exactly you mean.
I imagine there's no Overwatch style ults haha
Like a strong of powerful move that they can only use like one per combat or one per 4 encounter and turns
Once*
I suppose spell slots can only be used once per day
Not chargeable ones no
There are limited features for different classes/subclasses
The exact limits vary
I'd recommend reading the basic rules for the classes that interest you most
What the squirrel lady said
For the halfling race. What does it mean? Half orc?, half demon?, half human?
They're not half anything
They're called halflings for being short
Half height
Necromancers have always been pretty call. Like Diablo, or Death Knight from WoW. They work ok in DnD?
How does one specify if they are half of a race?
There's information on all the species in the basic rules
And I main worgen in wow as well. There a werewolves race? Haha
But currently, you would do that with flavor
There's a shifter species
That's just the name of the species. They're like Hobbits from the Lord of the Rings series.
Which are the descendants of people with lycanthropy
Interesting 🤔
Necromancy is a little difficult to run in DnD and doesn't become available until higher levels, but there are some options. Wizard and Cleric are the best classes suited for Necromancy spells.
Probably my last question, maybe more will come but this one is very important: Timezones, how bad is it when I want to interact with anyone?
Depends on the group you play with, I would typically try to pick one that's within my general Timezone
Depends on the time zone of the other people in your game. Games are usually scheduled when everyone can be there and last a few hours.
So there is no role for timezones?
Hard to say, really. Finding a group with a schedule that works for you is always the hardest part of DnD no matter what time zone you're in.
Rather than specifically trying to find someone from your timezone, just try to find people who are available during the same time period as you are. If you're free at 6pm, there's no reason you can't play with someone from another country if they're free at 1pm, or whatever.
A bit swingy, I think the issue is a lack of options and not all of them are focused on summoning skeletons to fight for you, the list are:
- Necromancy Wizard
- Undead/Undying Warlock
- Spores Druid
- Oathbreaker Paladin (most likely to be banned in tables)
To a lesser extent:
- Spirits Bard
- Phantom Rogue
No, most of the games advertised will have a time the game will take place, you just pick one that you can fit into your schedule.
As Colossus said, the time of the game is more important than the time zone
Ok then, I think I'm ready to make friends! (Probably... I'm still why)
Spores druid sounds like an imaginative way of doing it. 🤔 And why is outhbreaker so banned? 😂
This server tends to be busier during US hours, but there are people here from all over
I will say the necromancy wizard needs some work but that's a conversation for another channel
By dnd rules, you have to be evil to pick Oathbreaker, and its mostly down to the DM on whether they allow you to go Oathbreaker
The issue is that most people don't really know how to roleplay evil characters so DMs ban them just to be safe
UK here. 😎🇬🇧
You might be expecting some anti villain type of evil but most people end up playing evils like murder hobos
I like the idea of an evil character but I think I'm too nice to stay that way haha
Spores Druid is v zombie based despite the name, your gimmicks are all centered around necrotic damage and you get to summon like 3-4 zombies once per long rest
Oath Breaker is weird edge case of legality. It was printed in the Dungeon Master's Guide as an example of a class you might give to an evil NPC. But players like the mechanics of it, so a lot of people want to use it as a player class too. Its relatively well balanced so its usually fine at most tables, but sometimes the DM doesn't feel comfortable with a player using a class that wasn't originally designed to be used by players
Gotta find the right group first.
Combined with a Druid's baseline summoning spells and you get a whole zoo running
Didn't they add oathbreakers in heroes of Faerun?
No its DMG
Oh maybe. I don't own that book
Edit: no it looks like they did not
Again, let's stick with base class recommendations and content that's available for free. Folks in this channel tend to not have even read through the class lists yet, and there's definitely such a thing as 'too much information'.
A full party of skeleton summoning guys in dark cloaks and armor is pretty funny
"the target takes 3d8 damage of the chosen type." chat the hell does this mean
?tag new dice
Dice
Dice add randomness to the game. The 20-sided die (d20) is the most important one you’ll use. When the outcome of an action is uncertain, the game uses D20 Tests to determine success or failure. The higher your roll, the more likely it is that you succeed. The most common use for dice other than the d20 is to determine damage.
When you need to roll dice, the rules tell you how many dice to roll of a certain type, along with any numbers to add or subtract. For example, “3d8 + 5” means you roll three eight-sided dice, add them together, and add 5 to the total.
Chosen type would mean you pick the type of damage it deals as well.
no i mean the 3d8 part
3d8 means you roll an 8-sided dice 3 times and add them together. So the target would take that amount of damage.
It can be. Or it can be 3
My Wizard senses are telling me you're looking at Chromatic Orb. Yup! It's a decent amount of potential damage for a first level spell!
Not bad damage. An average of 13.5
3-24 damage basically
Lot of variance there.
how the hell
you're spot on
Some folks have extensive knowledge of the game and can call up minutiae at a moment's notice. Some folks are just quick to search!
It's one of the few spells that does that amount of damage and lets you choose a type
Any good class choices for learning the game with?
None of the classes are too complicated for a beginner to learn, but if you're specifically looking for something thats simple and easy to understand, then generally speaking the more magic a class has, the more complex it is. So non-magical classes like Fighter, Barbarian, Rogue, and Monk are the simplest
Makes sense. Still ... I do like my magic 👀
i downloaded a character sheet online and how do i use it without printing it out like idk if this makes sense
Well, if you're at a table, I don't see the harm in keeping your phone with you 🤔
Then pick a magic class!
Ranger and Paladin have a good mix of weapons and magic, so that it's not too overwhelming.
Cleric and Bard are some of the most straightforward of the spellcasting classes, if you're interested in a full mage.
no i mean actually write stuff in the blank sheet
If it's a pdf, I believe you can edit it by downloading and choosing a doc editor like word 🤔
no its a png
Some character sheet PDF files are 'fillable'. These have sections you can type in, like little text boxes.
Some aren't fillable. You can't write on these at all, and they must be printed out.
damn
If it's a png, it's just a picture. You would need to print it out.
I suppose technically you could open it up in an image editor like paint or clip studio, and just type in little text boxes in each section, but that sounds like a huge pain
The fillable PDF is here, FYI: https://media.dndbeyond.com/compendium-images/br/ph/character-sheet.pdf
hola, apologies if this isnt the right spot im new to all this. Im an extreme beginner and trying to find an online group to help me learn and enjoy, as roleplaying and character deveopment, as well as good stories (as writing is my passion) is something i really enjoy. problem is i will learn the game, but i struggle to learn alone and need help. how would i go about finding people to help me learn and let me join a campaign and wont mind me being a bit slow.
#find-a-game has the info for using the server's Looking for Game/Group channels. Whether you post an ad yourself or reply to others, just communicate what you said about hoping to learn. That said, it's generally true you'll stand a better chance of joining a group if you know the rules somewhat.
For that, maybe join a learn-to-play session during the virtual weekends (see the server's Events tab) or a server like Altrole or D&D Newbie Sessions, which specifically offer games where you learn how to play.
thank u. i much apreciate your responce 🙂
I'm a bit off when it comes to the differences between warlock, wizard, and sorcerer. They all sound like variations of the same thing 😅
Wow has warlock and mage and they're pretty well defined. 🤔 Evil demon mage, and mage of frost, fire, and arcane.
They're all spellcasters, but the sources of their power and how they use that power is different.
Wizards get access to the widest array of spells and can put many into their spellbooks. Their magic comes from study.
Sorcerers have a smaller pool of spells and twist them in different ways (more damage, more targets, etc.). Their magic comes from their heritage.
Warlocks have a lot of customization options. They get their power from a pact with an entity.
They are similar, yeah. At their core, the mechanics of the classes are "casts spells, and...", where spellcasting is 60-80% of the class.
Each of those classes has a different end to that sentence after "and...". Reading the class features can show what the differences are
Hm... Sounds like I'm mostly vibing with wizard or sorcerer then. Choices choices 😅
Wizard - Has a tool for any situation
Sorcerer - Has a few tools that solve every situation
Warlock - Has a specialized tool that you can add mods into
So warlock has the least? But they get mods? What kind of mods? Different to the sorcerer spell alterations mentioned above?
Eldritch Invocations and Pact Boons are permanent (so if I were to use a gun analogy it'd be like adding barrel mods, scopes, etc)
Yeah, best place to learn more is to check the class description
Sorcerers are temporary boosts for one spell, so like bringing a grenade to a gunfight
Wizard is the one who carries like 5 guns within said gunfight

what influences armor class i did the character sheet builder on dnd beyond it gave me a 15 ac but i don't have any armor and my dex modifier is +1?
barbarian classs
Barbarian's have unarmored defense - see https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-classes#Level1BarbarianUnarmoredDefense
Nope
While you aren’t wearing any armor, your base Armor Class equals 10 plus your Dexterity and Constitution modifiers.
lizard folk class has 13 natural ac does that change anything
Not really - D&DBeyond will pick the thing that gives you the best Armor Class calculation.
its because dnd beyond doesn't have the lizard folk class available i have the book irl but not on dnd beyond so i have to add all of the lizard class abilitys manually so would it be 18 now? maybe i should ask my dm?
for there advise or what they would rule
No - you would use the barbarians "10+dex+con" to calculate your AC
The lizardfolks AC doesn't stack
You pick one or the other - you don't get them both.
AC Calculations don't stack, so your Lizardfolk natural AC, your Barbarian Unarmored Defense, and your armor don't interact with one another at all.
ok thanks for the help guys
Are we allowed to send Character pdf's here? If so I'd like someone to look at my character sheet
Hi there! I'm currently making a VTT. I'm not usually the DM, so I must ask, are there adv/disadvantage rolls that are not typically d20
typically in these rolls you roll a d20 but are there other rolls or is it ALWAYS a d20

Thank you very much! I'm not the biggest dnd player, and I appreciate this as its a little passion project im doing for myself. Thanks!
Hi guys
Hello. I wanna get into dnd but really dont know how. Like sources on where to find people or just in general. Ive only played bg3 and thats my knowledge.

if you wish, have a look at the basics found in the bot then hop back if you have more specific questions
BG3 is a good start for sure
What about Warhammer is that a good start?
It is a great place for understanding rolling dic, and dice math lol. Also fantastic for the strategy side of a good D&D battle. But outside of that, there are not many similarities that I see
I feel like the main problem from me actually playing is just time and inexperienced atp. I have no IRL friends that play and a lot of online ppl are experienced and different timezones
The timezones shouldnt limit you as long as it is being played when you can. I have people from Australia play in my games (from the US) so it is their morning when we play in my night time. I am sure if you look through the #find-a-game you'l find and / or post what you are looking for
There are also places on Facebook, Reddit, Your local library, local gaming store, etc
Yeah I may try. I think I can understand the rules, maybe character building will be challenging but I feel like I can come up with something (Im just confused on the stat part ect not backround or lore much)
?tag new abilities
Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
I see
not sure if that helps lol but it is some basic info. also just above is more basics in the bot.

The only character I've made is a dwarf with a lot of strength and nothing in intelligence, but I had to get help and it still took me a bit to understand
Hello, new to DnD here, though I have been stalking the DnD workings a bit.
I wanted my first game to have me be a fairy barbarian, already got a cool idea for them and their story to explain it. Though, as I was looking for fairy stuff, I saw mentions that having flight at early levels is weird.
Are there any notable reasons behind why flight is hard to work around?
thats normal. usually each class has one primary important stat, then a second semi important one. Constitution is good for all classes as it helps keep you alive longer (more health points)
Flight can nullify certain challenges without needing to use any resources. Ideally, though, the DM will still find ways to make the player strategize.
Also do I dm people on the looking for players channel or thread?
each class description as you look at them usually tells u which stat(s) are the most critcal
Post in the attached thread unless the ad specifies to send them a message directly.
If it just says dm and not dm me do I just dm the person the bot pings?
It's also kind of intimidating for me because I'm young compared to a lot of players in DND
Yep!
The players range from probably 10 - 100 years old. most on here will be over 18 but many post that their games are open to not over 18. you can also make a post as a player looking. give your availabilty, the fact that yer not over 18 but dont put yer age, and anything specific
I started when I was 10. Taught my kids when they were 7 and 9 and they still play MANY years later
Where do I post to look for a game or something? I don't feel like I can do anything big though
follow the steps in #find-a-game
Would it be looking for a DM? Or smthin else
Looking for a DM yup
Uh do I just press send after I press the command? I feel like I would have to type something first but
Sorry for so many questions I just don't want to mess up
Step 1. Go to any channel where you can type.
Step 2. Type /looking.
Step 3. Highlight the channel you want to post in.
Step 4. Hit Enter.
Step 5. Fill out the form you're directed to.
Step 6. Hit Enter.
Ohhh, right cause you can do things like fly over traps...
Thank you!
Okay turns out I got another question, should I make my character sheet BEFORE finding a DM or AFTER? Maybe like a baseline I can edit once I find a campaign
After is usually better
that way you can make sure the soruces you're using are allowed, have the DM there to help you, and can better tie into the setting
if you want to prebuild; keep your backstory a little more general and be ready to tweak things to fit the world you end up in
hey are there any good feats for warior of elements monk?
Grappler + Street Justice is rather nice if your DM allows you to use the extended reach to grapple c:
cold caster is also a good one if you use cold damage; it sets them up for a stunning strike by reducing their save against it by 1d4
bonus points in that it also gives you Ray of Frost which you can make use Wis; it's a nice little ranged option that also slows on a hit without taking up one of your hands other than to cast the somatic component
Also #character-discussion is a great place to get more detailed character build ideas and feedback
alright thank you
Hi, I’ve never played DND before and I’m not familiar with it. Where should I go to get started?
Ive played dnd as a player but as a gm, I've botched ome campaign and now I'd like to ty again as a gm but im struggling with what to do? I have an idea but im trying to figure out how to execute it and i dont even know where to start
Any advice would be great. My dms are open as well
I'm filling out my character's "Allies and organization sheet", what would be good to put there for a cursed warlock who wishes to undo his curse as to re-join his noble occult family (The curse was from an incident made during their pact with a fiend who haunted the family until PC was turned away). Would he know any nobles? Perhaps a couple of mages he contacted to fix his curse/ailement?
I'm new myself but I think I can give you a couple pointers
Hold on lemme get you a fresh sheet
If anyone asks I sent them a sheet and tutorial in DMs
Botched it how? If largely plot or story issues, I'd usually recommend trying a prewritten adventure to get a feel for their format and flow
Thx
I think its called railroading?
Here's the recomended reading and some tools if you'd like as well
Read the information in 'Playing the Game'; Then follow allong with 'Creating A Character' using either the dnd beyond character builder or roll20 to make a practice character before heading over to #character-discussion to have it looked over.
Feel free to ask any questions you still have in #dnd-newcomers or check out the resources in #learn-to-play ; There's a short interactive module you can play to get a feel for the game, or you could seek out gameplay videos online. Once you're ready to play, head over to #find-a-game, one of the many LFG discord servers, r/lfg on reddit, or your friendly local game store. If you'd like a printable character sheet, those can be found here.
Yeah, that's a pretty common and understandable DM mistake. Don't worry, even veteran DMs do it sometimes
A good way to get around it is getting used to the idea that your plans can be modified without them fully being scrapped or transformed
Prepped a bandit encounter in the forest but the party last minute decided to go into town? Well I guess we're doing a bandit encounter in town then
Oh! Im struggling with npcs, important character and recurring ones...and villains and how to make their sheets
As well, the way I see it, not all railroading is bad railroading, but all good railroading comes from the players setting the tracks themselves, or in other words, they see the direction that the game is going and chooses to stick with it for the most part, understanding that theyre better off engaging with the DMs prepped content more often than not
I recommend reading the free rules first, they're in the pinned message by the bot
Ok ty
My recommendation here would honestly be not to make characters sheets for them at all. If there supposed to be in combat, I'd find an existing monster/NPC statblock that works and if they're not supposed to fight, they don't need a statblock
I don't recommend creating your own monsters when you're new because there's an art to that where experience really helps
Here's this if anyone wants to say anything about this
Okay so main villain and recurring bad giy get sheet but basic npcs don't (unless theyre like...grunts)
Oooh! Anyone here know how to use roll20 and but in some battlefields?? Cause I suck at that one too
I'm as new as one can get to DnD, and the only reason I pursue it further than just thinking it's cool is that I can play as X character
You can to some extent, emphasis on to some extent
So is it a valid reason and if so, how free am I to create said character
So your character can definitely have the personality of a character for the most part, but their backstory and mechanics are grounded in dnd rules
Hey! I’m new to D&D but super interested 👀
I love character creation and storytelling.
Looking for a group or just people to chat with!
Lets say said character is a "summoner"
He attains his "summons" through a taming ritual where he has to defeat said "summon" in a 1v1 and if anyone were to interrupt or help it would not count as a successful ritual
When he does attain him the "summon" is forever bound to him
And the medium through which his "summons" materialize is shadows.
And he can let out more than 1 "summon" at a time at the cost of energy of course and they become harder to use and control the further we go down the rituals.
As he has a hereditary technique of a famous tribe which is a preset of 10 shikigami or "summons" which get stronger the further we go and hence harder to tame
Or megumi from jjk
And there are many "flavours" that I can add but this is the main takeaway that I don't want any of it gone or alterd
- Summoner sure
- Defeating the summon in a 1v1 as a ritual probably not since its tied to the spell, ask DM
- Again summons are based off the spell so they're kind of bound forever anyways
- Flavoring is free so sure
- Sure, the strength of a summon is kind of based off its level slot anyways
- I think the closest thing is to run Shepherd Druid which can actually buff summons as a subclass trait, otherwise options are limited
Can you explain why I can just be?
are skills/abilities decided before the campaign or during it?
Wdym why you can just be
Can't*
Because some of those features don't exist in dnd lol
Summons aren't really like pokemon where you catch or duel them for them to join you, they're just a spell you cast and something pops out of it
I thought the warlock was the summoner but he does it through demon contracts... Not cool
Since its your summons they'd always listen to you so you can't exactly get your summons to fight you (a waste of time and resources)
Warlock has very few summoning spells but no Warlocks aren't otherwise summoners
They're like an office hire that uses company perks from a multinational company (their patron) to fight
I think I get what you mean somehow
Ok so, the ritual thingy isn't really practical
That and it doesn't really exist unless you want to fight out your own summons(?)
But that's just wasting your own resources for no benefit
Can my character be semi competent at close combat? Not to be versatile but to bank off my "summons" distracting and maybe applying pressure
It wouldn't really work thinking about it anyways, summoning spells are based on concentration which when broken, the summon just poofs
And concentration has a chance to break by taking damage
Ah!
So if your summon punches you funny they just disappear lol
Summoners don't seem cool anymore man
They're still pretty cool but have a bad rep for stalling out combat
Yes, Spores Druid kind of does that
But a druid is the spirit animal guy... Like udyr from league of legends, that's not what I'm aiming for
With Pact of the Chain, somewhat. But your summons strength won't surpass your own. Good thing about Find Familiar is also that it does not require concentration.
Flavoring is free
Spores Druid basically plays with fungi and undead
And wins in quantity of summons
Not cool
They also have alright melee capabilities so you can just run in with your zombies and badgers to beat up someone with sticks
Are my expectations too unrealistic, if so help me please I think this can be fun I just have no real ground to set my expectations of off
When a summoner summons, you say it's a spell and that it just pops out of air like magic
Can I flavour it to that I coming from my shadow or whatever shadow I summon it from?
Since flavoring is free you can describe how they pop out
They can crawl out of a shadow, come out of a dimensional door
Wonderful
Ok now, can my character have other stuff or is that it?
Within dnd rules yes
You can't and shouldn't make custom equipment for your character
So can I have infinite storage as in my shadows are like a pool but the weight is on my body so if we're to hide a sword in my "shadow pool" it would have a weight penalty as if I was carrying it?
It's basically storage but flavored
You can't have infinite storage but you also don't need to describe how your items are carried per se
I don't understand
So feel free to draw something out from a portal basically
But just because you can draw something out of a portal, the portal can't carry more than what your character could have carried
What can my character carry and what determines it?
Your character can carry anything as long as it doesn't pass the weight limit
Every item has a weight tied to it
So my flavour still stands
Its only like a portal but instead of a portal it's my shadow
To some extent yes, let's say if your character can carry only 120 pounds worth of things, your portal can also only carry 120 pounds worth of things
It can't be infinite because its a portal
do you need to determine your abilities before the campaign begins?
Yes
