Please stop pinging me.
What ?
Advantage and disadvantage are usually mechanical, theyre given by the rules according to certain features or effect so as a dm follow those. In some situation you as the dm may say a roll is made at advantage or disadvantage depeneding on if you feel that that is fit
Oh sorry I left it on
"You as a druid would be intimately familiar with this type of plan, so roll me a Nature check with advantage." It could be based on what characters do, who they are, or just the circumstances of a situation. It's hard to give a comprehensive listing.
Okkk
Got it
I make the call as dm
Say a player makes a persuasion check and they make a really good argument, consider giving them advantage on a roll like that
Got it 🙏
If it's not specified in the rules, you make the call. But there are plenty of instances where advantage/disadvantage applies according to the rules.
Makes sense
I've asked once. Please don't reply to me for no reason.
Hi, im totally begginer, can somebody help me please? And why is Eddie Munson alive?

Ok sorry Iamrazorwing
Plot armor thicker than a skull
Bro how do dm know what ability the player has to roll
Like if they want to roll dexterity
You dont, the players should know
You have read the rules, right?
I am reading them at this moment
And asking questions when I have a doubt
I’ve played for a bit and I’m pretty familiar with the game and I’m just wondering if anyone’s running a one shot tomorrow

Let’s say all of them are new and don’t know anything then they are on me then I am the one responsible
Follow the bot post to the info for the server's Looking for Game/Group channels.
Players dont get to decide to roll dexterity
-player suggests a course of action e.g. jump from rooftop to rooftop
-dm specifies which skill they need to roll and keeps a dc in mind e.g. athletics
-player rolls
-describe situation depending on the roll
How do I know as a dm which specific skill the player need to roll
Read what each skill does + a bit of experience
If in dex is it persuasive or intimidation etc
First session depends on luck ig
Easy, are they persuading someone with facts its persuasion, intimidating them you guessed it intimidsiton
A lot of skills are quite face value in what they are for
You will make plenty of mistakes in your first session—and even beyond!
The key is learning from them.
Mistakes are part of the game, accept it happens, learn from the mistake and move on
Dont keep dwelling in mistakes as it slows down the game
That's very common! But it's also common to realize that there's a lot to remember and you won't get it 100% right ever and the point is to have fun.
Yeah true
I’ll just skim through the rules
And as the players say
I’ll pick up as I play
You wouldn't be the first to take that approach!
True
You know what I fear I don’t fear playing wrong I fear playing wrong and never realising it
And playing it wrong for the rest of time
That’s what I fear
Idk why
It is what it is
Can't help you there. I don't see it being a big deal. I've been playing for five years, and I still discover new things. It's fine.
Ik it’s kind of ocd thing
as a wizard for the Magic missile spell, do i roll dmg 3 times? it says here "A dart deals 1d4 + 1 force damage to its target. " and i have 3 darts
Yep.
do i also roll if i hit 3 times?
So Magic Missile hits automatically. Each dart is 1d4+1. So you roll 3d4+3.
ty ty
Bro is there spell cards included in the essential kit
?
That's something you can Google.
I’ve watched a dozen video but no one mentioned it
That’s why I was asking you
Are spell cards necessary?
For first session?
No spells cards and no, not necessary.
Not even if I am playing as a wizard
Or sorcerer
?
Nope, not necessary. Nice to have? Sure, but not necessary.
Then if I have to use spell then ?
The spells are in the rules.
Okk then
Bro it’s late
Gotta go
See you later
guys im playing a tabaxi/human hybrid and im struggling to come up with names, how do you guys normally name your characteers?
Hello everyone 👋 I've just joined and I'm glad to be here, I'm new to D&D and I've always been interested in the community. I'm an artist so I'd love to share some stuff here too eventually. Glad to be here 😊
I get my names from the following: Random name generators. Translations from other languages. Stealing from disparate media sources my fellow players are unlikely to be familiar with. Remixing syllables, letters, and the like using the above methods.
Hi guys. Quick question. If I wanna play on Roll20 I have to buy the digital version of the Players Handbook, right?
Only if you want more then what comes in the SRD/free rules
You can play on Roll20 without the PHB, but if you want access to that content via Roll20, yes, you would need to buy it.
Thanks
Tabaxi have one of my favorite naming schemes in D&D. They're usually a little long and poetic, like Melting Snow on Sun-Baked Hills or whatever. Mixing that with a human name could be fun: Derick with Soot-Stained Hands or Maria in a Field of Lolling Daisies.
A fellow player from a game I played in recently had a Tabaxi named Mote on the Wind, or Mote for short.
that would be fun, i AM playing a gender neutral character however so are the tabaxi names gender specific?
Nope!
-# Tabaxi names and tiefling names are so dang good!
That'd work just fine at one of my tables
no luck finding a campaign for beginners sadly
If a campaign isn’t explicitly advertised as newbie friendly, it’s always worth it to ask
i ask but sadly im not getting luck they mostly have been high levels
High-level games are less likely to be newbie-friendly! I would recommend looking for lower levels.
I’d recommend to keep searching, games are posted here every day. Also try to expand your search, the more avenues you use to find a game the better your chances of finding a match.
The user right above, iamrazorwing, has an excellent LFG resource guide in their bio!
Hello! Im new I've played, never DMed before and I want to do so because I've seen so much creativity in lore building and storytellning and want to be able to do one!
Welcome. If you know the rules decently, you're most of the way there.
Grab a pre-written adventure (plenty are on DMsGuild), do some reading/watching (I'd recommend the Quickstart Guide, the DM section of the Basic Rules starting here, and this Ginny Di video), and dive in!
Hii I’m Sophie, I’ve been playing dnd for over a year now! Looking to make new friends and join groups for DnD! 18+, and my time zone is GMT ☺️

Ohh I was just introducing myself I thought this was appropriate channel
This channel is to help new-to-D&D folks get help getting started with the core game rules and mechanics.
We really don't have an introduction channel - but welcome to the official D&D server and we hope you enjoy discussing D&D among our many channels (see #channel-guide to see our many, many channels for specific D&D topics)
I'm here to do funni wizard things, we love casting spells
So like, where do I get started with DND? Is it research into rules or are there like formats? I know there's editions of the rules.
Oh wait I just checked some of the channel names, I see, there's resources for all this

Always great when people manage to find stuff themself, if you ever have any questions feel free to ask
I want to ask something...
Does Quarterstaff counts as Arcane Focus?
It can
Does it? I could have sworn you needed a staff
The staff acts as a quarterstaff + focus but it is still different
So, I could hold a Quarterstaff in one hand, a shield in another hand, being able to cast spells, while also able to bonk people with max Int modifier thanks to Shillelagh-
You can cast spells that need a non gold cost material component. Weird edge case is spells that only have v,s/s components which you still need a free hand for
I have never played DnD as a player. But I still want to build character, I wanted to play Eldritch Knight. Assuming Quarterstaff can be a spellcasting focus, then I can dump Str stat. Getting both Str and Int for Knight just seems hard
I can take War Caster for that
That you can indeed
Id still double check on this though, pretty sure you need a 'staff' which is slightly more expensive at 5gp. Cant say 100% certain
But man, as I check, Quarterstaff doesn't have "spellcasting focus" tag on it. Only Simple Weapon and Melee Weapon
I didn't pay attention to this before asking
need the get the special 5gp version
Couple bucks more you get a fancy quarterstaff that also lets you cast spells
So new question, I can hold a shield, a spellcasting focus. And I can unequip an item once per turn right? So if needed, I can unequip the focus and throw dagger since the equip action is made as part of the attack
Staff doesn't get the benefit from Shillelagh, that's bad for me
A staff still has the quarterstaff label, it should
hey lads. i asked this question in another channel and got more or less ignored.
long story short. im making a doc. dnd 101. its supposed to teach my players who have never played before learn how to create a character. fill out a character sheet. and how to play the game in general.
right now im stuck on trying to get the character creation process right.
is this a good place to ask for help? or should i take this elsewhere.
That's great to know
That sounds promising, but I can't help, I'm new and don't know much
D&D Beyond has a character creation tool and free basic rules
Honestly with new people if at all possible i suggest working on it together, direct feedback and questioning from someone with more experience works so much better then just reading the rules in someone elses words
im making it. then i was going to use it in session 0 to work through everyones stuff and teach them how things work.
its more of a resources for me to consolidate knowledge because as great as my players are. they havent read a single thing ive given them.
i was going to read off of it. and use it to answer whatever questions they have and to help them along with fleshing out their characters and teaching them how exactly to play the game
i know. but what it gives is limited. and in my current position it would be better to do things manually.
plus that relies on them learning on their own time.
with dnd beyond you need to buy a few things that i just cant afford right now. so im going with character sheets and doing stuff manually to give my players access to everything instead of being restricted to whats on dndbeyond.
guys please can anyone explain to me how complete the character sheet?
i know more or less how to do it
what is missing from your sheet?
are you filling out a paper one, a fillable PDF or a generated online one like D&D Beyond?
everything
the pdf
2nd chapter of the free basic rules (check pinned messages for a link) goes through how to make a character step by step
It's in this section as Noob mention: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character#ChooseaCharacterSheet
just to know is it the base book?like with not the all species?
the basic rules contain only a handful of the species. If you own a physical book with other species in it, you can copy their information into the PDF if it's just fillable
Oh i find it,i was looking only onto the figthing part
i was wondering how the spell blade ward works, can you cast it after an enemy attacks that way you have resistance to bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage and do a saving throw as well?
You cannot
It's something you have to do before you get hit if you want to get a buff - it takes an action on your turn, so you cannot do it in response to being attacked. You have to predict you will be hit with one of the damage types.
Only during your turn.
Yes it’s as bad as it sounds
You do nothing as an action so you can take less damage, to specific damage types
For one turn
in your opinion is it worth using it over rolling for a saving throw
im on roll 20 im a new player and i want to know as a copper dragonbord paladin wih a sage backround what spells should i picjk form thew free basic rules 20-14 and 2024
Rolling for a saving throw doesn’t take an action
And it's not something Blade Ward helps with in any way
So it’s a poor comparison
You might be thinking of Resistance (the spell, not mechanic), which gives one willing creature a d4 on the next saving throw it makes.
But if you want that, take Bless - as it benefits both defense and offense. It does take a level 1 spell slot to cast, but you affect 3 people at once.
Fire bolt, minor illusion and shield are always decent picks
ALso what weapon masteries should i choose
What weapons do you use?
What’s your class?
paladin
Take longsword and, idk, javelin
ok
what is an Arcane Focus for, just decoration?
Both flavour and mechanical reasons. You use an Arcane Focus to replace material components without a cost or that aren't consumed.
Without either the components or the Focus, you cannot cast a spell if it lists a M (or materials) as part of its components
Didn’t you say sage?
Can I ask something more, do I need to have a hand to hold the arcane focus when I cast spells? Crystal/Orb for example, can I just wear them somewhere like an Amulet or a Holy Symbol on a shield?
If it has a material component, yes you need a free hand. You also need a free hand if it has Somatic components.
If it has Material and Somatic components you can use both with the same hand (by my understanding).
War Caster feat allows you to cast with somatic components even if you don't have both hands free, but ask your DM if that works for Material components too
Correction: even if you don't have both hands free.
anyone have a good yt series that has a good bard i can watch?
hello im totally new to dnd can someone teach me the basics?🙃
Hey I'm new to DND anyone have tips for someone who wants to play wizard?
Make sure you know what your spells do. 🙂

I've been trying to start a DND club but my friends just don't talk about it much so I never really have time to start playing
That's unfortunate. I don't get to play as much as I'd like to.
Hi does anybody have a free copy of the latest player handbook ?
Would like to get a read on pwiz
Yeah that would be piracy, and not something you'd get or want to ask on the official discord of the company lol
hypothetically ofc though 100% hypothetically
As someone who's prepping to play as a wizard, this is the fun part
Figuring out all the bullcrap you can pull off lol
Your subclass doesn't come at first level. Even in 2024 some other classes (e.g. warlocks) need to choose their subclass early even if it doesn't affect gameplay until level 3
Wizard subclasses are all based around specialisations. Wizards are about casting craploads of spells, but wizard subclasses determine your main role
Thanks!
And it doesn't affect much lorewise. Unlike say, sorcerers, the character themself actually gets a choice of what they want to specialise in. All the gameplay impact without much risk of a messy character backstory
Maybe I could be something less tricky than a wizard?
If you want damage, go evoker. Versatility? Scribe. Defence? Abjurer. Social and disruption? Enchanter. Creativity? Illusionist. If you want all the spellcasting of a wizard but also want to Stab, bladesinger is right there.
Like something easy for a beginner
I'm going to say this: there is no "beginner" class in DnD. Even if you've just started learning the game you can make whatever character you want. As long as your party and DM are actually worthy of being your party and DM, how "complicated" or "difficult" a class appears doesn't matter.
Are there any classes that are like knights in away?
Fighter, paladin
Paladin has divine magic, tankiness and support
Fighters are VERY customisable. Fighting styles, weapon choice
If you still want magic, there's the Eldritch Knight subclass
Fighter sounds pretty fun this was super helpful! I'm gonna go to bed see ya!
With stuff like Action Surge you get to whack stuff a LOT
- Battlemaster: Get a number of battle manouvres that you can add on like spells. Like the sorcerer's Metamagic but martial. Very versatile and customisable
- Champion: Buffs for the fighter's base features, basically do stuff that fighters do even better. One more fighting style (add on defence!), double and then TRIPLE your crit rate. People say it's boring but come on, crits are never boring.
- Eldritch Knight: Fighter but with magic. If you want a paladin but trading some offense for defence, and arcane instead of divine magic, play this.
These are the 3 fan favourites
There's more, but most learn about these 3 first
Hello I was wondering I could be part of a campaign
I just started and want some people to play with
There's also PDK/Banneret (support and giving other party members your fighter features), Rune Knight (runic, giant magic and buffs), Cavalier (defence and mounted combat), Echo Knight (clones!), and Psi Warrior (psychic powers)!
Good evening
Good evening indeed
@harsh pilot hello
basically anything to start playing asap so we gather some experience in the matter to start actually playing fr
me and my friend here were trying to start a dnd campaign but we realized we don't even know what to do after character creation
ill let mb talk
if you could even count just doing it on instinct as character creation
so in D&D, there is a DM (they are the referee for the game) and up to 5 players (some people do more but theyr'e crazy)
You need to choose at least one of you to be a DM (dungeon master) and adjudicate / run the game for the other person / people
is the DM able to play as well or are they just the referee?
The DM plays, but they play the monsters, quest-givers, allies and generally describe the world and the story
think of them as the director of a movie, where all the players are actors playing charactes in said movie
so is they are like the antagonist and every other character?
correct
horrible spelling mistake btw my bad
A dm is like the game master or game Warden
i think you can but that defeats the wonder of the player
I guess
You would simulatenouly play as "the evil lich" but also "brunoff, the tavern keep"
the game gives you pre-made simple character sheets for enemies / NPCs like these so you never need to worry about making them. just being authentic to how they would act in the moment
My suggestion is doing one-shots before an actual campaign to test the waters
I don't get it
I also don't get it
yeh thats what i suggested (didnt, just right now)
so the game will give you a character sheet that says, brunoff has 8 strength, 10 constitution and so on. So if "brunoff" needs to do anything, you know what dice to roll
stay young beautiful and unstoppable twin
A one shot camping: a campaign that lasts 1 or 2 sessions (if I understand it correctly)
but this is just an example. As a DM, you control every single living thing (and non-living thing) in the world other than the players, who control their own characters. sounds overwhelming but you normally only need to think about one thing at a time.
the dice part is also confusing...
so it's a really short campaign?
Yeah
makes sense tbh
Good for basics or testing homebrews (if you get to that point)
that's a bit more complicated. It's best to read the rules but most of the time you roll a 20-sided dice, and you need to beat a certain number.
so you roll a d20, and it might land on a 16
the game gives you a number you need to beat (say, 10),
16 is bigger than 10, so you succeed at whatever you attempted
its a mixture
sometimes the rules straight up tell you what number you need to beat, other times the DM just makes it up
oh
Dice mechanics
Disadvantage: you roll twice and take the smaller number
Neutral: you roll once
Advantage: you roll twice you pick the higher number
also what are homebrews
homebrews are things that people make, which arent in official products
that's cool
Like video game mods but in dnd
-# alr told him tho 💔
Self made content not in RAW
RAW meaning "rules as written" or simply just as per the game's rules
But as is with video games, unless everyone agreed beforehand you don't bring modded stuff into a vanilla game
that sounds pretty fun, though I think I'd leave it for later when I ACTUALLY know how to do anything in dnd
yes its important that everyone agrees to use any homebrew content. the issue with homebrew content is that becuase anyone can make it (even people who dont know what theyr'e doing) you can end up with a lot of crazy stuff which really shouldn't be in the game
just keep it simple and don't worry about homebrew 😂
Also make a balance check before implementing a homebrew if you want, it helps getting everyone to agree to add it
what if I just want to add one new weapon class like a meteor hammer that I think isn't in RAW
generally you would pick and existing weapon and then just "say its a meteor hammer"
without changing any of its rules
flail would be a good candidate off the top of my head
well yeah I think that's the closest
Helli

Anything else you want to know?
what is this discussion gang
emoji flood, lets try to avoid that since most servers usually dont like it 🫵😐
Hi new
well, we were kind of stuck before in the STARTING a campaign part
im kronk
Dad?
💔
I've returned with the milk, son
Ur real?
He milked away
oh boy
Do One shot campaigns, to get introduced better before starting actual campaigns
okay okay
I would actually suggest one of D&D's many starter sets
Make it simple, have progression, missions, and a boss
Can i be a part
there are STARTER SETS?
That too
I might be missing some reading comprehension neurons...
yes, and if it's just you and a friend, "The Dragon of Ice Spire Peak" is a good pick since it is specifically designed for 2 people
Yeah. The newest one is called Heroes of the Borderlands.
more like... multiple... dozens...
surr
that's cool, do they come with characters included or can we use any?
Thx
I think they actually come with pre-made characters... one issue, its on a version of D&D thats a bit older than the newest version... its almost the same but probably just different enough to be confusing
(Thanks hasbro)
iirc most use preset/premade chars
Also have you decided which one of you and your friends will be the dm?
Ive never played dnd before tho
that's an issue because...
we both wanted to play
yknow you both get to play... one of you just plays the DRAGON instead of the adventurer 🤣
which is why I asked if the dm plays too
You could do turns.
how does that work?
One of you can be the dm, and on the next campaign, the other can be the dm... Switch between campaigns
i was thinking me since im bad at exploring and actually playing RPGs
but we were trying to do something about it
You both pick small adventures and then run it for the other person.
yeah man there is no game without the DM... the DM can even play allies for the party, there are rules for it (essentially you play both sides... you are on the party's side but you also control the monsters)
However, as a DM, do not play a player character. That almost never ends well.
except for when following the sidekick rules
that sounds confusing, but I get it kinda
That would by definition not be what I said, so sure
Can someone teach me i dont think i understand the rules
Even then though, I'd give the sidekick satblock to the player.
Y'know Tasha's suggests the sidekick classes as newbie PC classes? it's all kind of the same thing

wochu confused on
ze 🦴
It's not. But if treated as an actual pc, then there would potentially be the same problems that pop up with more traditional dmpcs, so I wouldn't recomment that.
👶 We might try something
Everything?
Read up on the first few chapters of the free basic rules on #learn-to-play , and feel free to ask any questions you might have.
consder DMing like... reading a fantasy book to your friend... but when the dragon appears you decide what it does, instead of reading out of the book
Or you could just find a dm online
ok that might be difficult to explain
How do u create a character?
ok ok, we'll take turns then I think
dnd beyond gets your hand thru that if it helps
true but that's more complicated maybe
Ok thx
so when it was suggested you take turns... that should be one turn per campaign - not every few minutes 😅😅 see, the DM knows everything like the ending to the plot, where all the traps are and stuff... if you switched around then the player who is supposed to be exploring would ALSO know everything and it would spoil the game for them haha
yeah yeah, I got that part
so generally you will DM an entire adventure, not swap during it
alright good ahah just wasn't quite sure
thanks
at that point one of us would get used to it and become the permanent dm
chances are never 0
true
no don't tell them about the curse
maybe
ikr
i meant for like that one session maybe
it's bound to happen bro
Is there a way to find other players?
one of us will fall
#find-a-game has some info on that
Like a sever or smth
this server 👍
Else, local games stores, dnd beyond, reddit, roll20, and local clubs
yeh cuz like im pretty bad at following the plot points or paying attention in RPGs specially
Have none of that where i live
everything/anything afaik
I don't get what you mean but I get it
This channel is for advice, but #looking-for-players , #looking-for-dm , #looking-for-community and #paid-looking-for-game are lfg channels. Find more info in #find-a-game

I cant do vc tho

then don't do vc simple solutions people
Reminder that soliciting for campaigns outside the lfg channels is off topic and not allowed, so don’t do that on this server
there are play-by-post (text only) games but they are quiet different. actually plenty of servers around for them
oh man
bro is genuinely asking i guess
in any case he does know now
what is happening
No no, it’s valid advice. Just not here
Ah sorry, back to you. Anything I can help you with?
Ok sry
Help me convince my gf to okay dnd
How do i find play by post games

idk? maybe reddit, someone here might invite you etc. they are a lot of random online spaces like that floating around

Make a post on #looking-for-dm outlining your preferences, and look for pbp games on #looking-for-players . And look around in #looking-for-community , those sometimes have pbp servers

I LOVE them

Me too
anyway, I'm going to sleep now, thanks for the help. good night
Do I gotta buy all those expensive ah books to understand the game fully?
Nope, you can play just useing the free rule!
no you just download the SRD 5.2 from the internet
How does character species work
you just pick one and it gives you some benefits
(oh it also determines what your character looks like)
Can u pick dragon born
yes
Oh I wouldn't download the 5.2 SRD. That is the free content, but the SRD is layed out for people to use to make game content- it is not laid out to play with.
It is after all the 'System Reference Document', not the 'Basic Rules'.
Does your species relate to ur class?
oh fair enough, never knew there was a difference
some species have abilities that suit specific classes well, but generally, no
You can combine any Species with any class. I'd go with what seems fun first time.
Any species can be any class, but yea the only differences between species is that some species don't give anything for certain classes
Like if iam an elf is it better to go ranger?
My character's a regular ol' human bard.
not particularly
Elves can make good rangers - dont get me wrong - you wouldn't be hamstringing yourself but neither is it a "must have" pick
Whats the difference between a wozard and a warlock
wizard = learns spells through study, warlock = makes a deal with a powerful creature (elder god, lich, demon etc) and takes some of its power
Oh
A wizard learns the ability to do arcane magic by going to school, a Warlock learns the ability to do arcane magic by signing a contract with a really powerful being
Kind of like a work contract, Warlock spells just happen to be employee benefits
Wizards have a lot more spell flexibility and focus primarily on spell casting.
Warlocks are spell casters, but their spells are more limited. Almost better to think of them as arcane fighters in a sense- most of their turns willl be using Eldritch Blast or cantrips, and going PEW PEW PEW, rather than casting lots of different spells like a Wizard.
Whats the difference on technical level like in combat and stuff
Sorcerers are born with the power to do arcane magic without any additional effort
Oh
wizard = lots of abilities (niche ones for each scenario) warlock = less abilities but gets some reliable heavy hitters
Also one last question
And often lots of fun flavour stuff for RP
If i play as a berserker, should i go with a polearm or a normal weapon
up to you, neither are "stronger" in combination with berserker than the other
Wizard has a tool for any situation
Sorcerers have a few tools for all situations
Warlocks have one tool that does one thing super well, also you can mod the tool like building a PC
wizards are versatile because they can switch stuff out, warlocks are versatile because you stack a lot of stuff on one base thing (EB)
Do I gotta know every itty bitty bit of DND lore like places and stuff?
yeah i mean ive played a LOT of both classes haha, was just trying to simplify as much as posible for the newb
nah
Trust me, most people don't follow lore 100% anyways
if you're a player you just ask your DM "hey what do i know about this"
If you're a DM, you just make stuff up or hit the forgotten realms wiki and take a 5-minute breather when your party rock up in town
LOL. Just be like 'We all head to the inn and take a break'
Uses this time to look over information
yeah i mean calling for a 5 minute break is heaps common in dnd games
gives players a chance to unclench their buttcheeks, drain the weasel and go get a McFlurry
Weasel just reminded me of my character with a ferret companion.
Guys what is line of effect and what are these shapes in line of effect like cone square etc ?
It's the area a spell/effect happens over
And how does it determine that a specific spell has that specific shape of area
Okkkk got it
Is long jump usually included in dnd sessions or people just ignore them
That'll depend entirely on what you're trying to do
Huh ?
What do you mean ?
If you're trying to do something that requires you to make a long jump, then that rule comes into play otherwise its its not relevant to what you're doing.
Okk
And long rest
Are those relevant
?
Long rests will be relevant, especially if players use up alot of resources they have like gaining back spell slots & HP
And how are those implemented in game
Like do players decide or dm decide when to take rest ?
It can be either or who suggests to take a long rest, and will essentially become in a way a group vote on if you should at that point or not.
So it’s choose by vote !
And can it be like a cutscene like a time skip or do the player have to wait for the rest to end ?
To a certain extent it's like a cutscene and in a way a time skip as the PCs are meant to spend about 8hrs of a long rest sleeping.
So it’s 8hrs in game
in game yes
And to players it’s like a cutscene
kind of, yes
Got it that’s was easy
What is concentration at face value ?
@loud pumice
It's your ability to focus on some spells
And let me guess it’s determined when creating a character
it's determined by the spell itself, it'll say C or Concentration, usually under the duration of the spell
Okkk got it
And is malnutrition relevant?
@loud pumice
Like when I asked some people they’ve said thirst and hunger are mostly ignored for the sake of simplicity
That's up to whoever's being the DM and if they want to include tracking how much the characters are eating. Personally for me I haven't played in a game where the DM wanted to keep track of the characters eating.
Like if I as a dm think without keeping the track of eating makes it simple I can ignore it ?
Yea, if you're the DM and want to make things simpler you can ignore it.
And does it apply to other hazards other than malnutrition
?
Yes, if you're the DM it's your choice what you want to include in your campaign.
Let’s say if I play a pre purchase campaign then I can choose which rule to apply
yes if you want to, although it may or may not change the experience depending on which rules you choose to apply.
long rests are very relevant unless you are playing a one shot that is over in a single in game day
Got it boss
Long rests are relevant in campaign
yes, its just characters going to sleep
KK Boss
Is paralyzed condition relevant ?
yes, a fair share of abilties and spells inflict the condition
Kkk
And guys what is a reaction I forgot what it is I read it
Before
It’s a type of action you can take on another beings turn
Got it

It's a measure how many different mechanics you may need to juggle while playing a certain class. For example, classes that can cast many spells, like clerics, druids, wizards and sorcerers are usually more complex, because spellcasting is a more complex mechanic than just attacking with your sword, like a fighter might do.
hey chat, I'm planning to play dnd for the first time, along with being a dm for the first time. I've read up on a lot of the mechanics and watched/listened to a few people play, currently just been struggling to find a prebuilt campaign.
I'm planning to play with 3 of my friends, and I've no luck finding a 3 player prebuilt campaign, most I've found has said 'requires some finess or balancing for less than 4-5 players' which as a first time player and DM i got no idea how to do or what it even entails.
Any reccomendations?
Most modules meant for 4-5 players should be fine for 3 players, honestly. Maybe remove a monster or two from certain encounters and you should be fine.
I think dragon on Icespire peak has scaling for all kind of party sizes
Dragons of Stormwreck Isle is a good one for new DMs too.
Wildcard option: You can give a player you both know is experienced and trust two characters to make 4. If you're confident in your multitasking, I could reccomended that you run a DM-run PC to achieve 4 that way - a simple martial to make it easy for yourself, even
all 4 of us are first-timers so probably not, thank for the suggestion tho
ill keep that in mind
hm... ill look into it thanks
although one of the things i dislike about Dragons of Stormwreck Isle is the sudden requirement for the DM to play a half dozen Kobolds at the same time asking a series of questions and interactions with the party. no easing into some social encounters for a new DM, just suddenly BAM a whole whack of it at once.
Does anyone know stuff about being a bard?
Uhhh I'm in my second campaign and my dm wants me to add stuff like governments towns and alot of other stuff to my background but I'm not very good at that yet 😭 are there any people who are more experienced with that type go thing that could help me?
What are your specific questions? Lots of folks in the server know about bards.
Is that not stuff you DM could help you with in terms of information about the world and stuff, or is this a published setting? I have done more colloborative backstories before but typically the DM would assist in a small way at least.
He's my friends friend and I have anxiety when it comes to stuff like that cause I don't wanna be a burden 😭
One of the things about asking for help is that the other person can say no if they feel like your request would be burdensome to them! Plus, I think it's very common for a DM to work with a player to avoid any stumbling blocks—especially if this person is your friend and not an Internet stranger.
hey guys im in my 3rd campign and was wondering how and when i should level up my character (he has multiple classes)
your DM will explain when they want you guys to level up. either because you have earned enough experience points or they feel you have earned it based on their story
I dont think I have ever encountered a game where the players decide to level up, its always according to the DM.
If you are planning to multiclass and your build depends on it, id make sure the DM plans to have a game go for a longer period of time. Otherwise, as a multiclass character you may feel underpowered compared to others if you start early and they stay mono classed
Dang, thought the rules in the server would be as big as the dnd rules
they have to be very particular as there 100'sof thousands of people on here. if they are loose with the rules, there would be MAJOR issues
ah ok
I was having a hard time looking for dnd games or people to play with 😔. There's noone irl who is interested in fantasy rpg's
really?
Yeah

where im from irl everyone is playing
Dang, must be fun with the people irl. I mean I can introduce them to the game. But I don't think anyone will even get anything I am saying
The places to look are libraries, games/hobby shops, school clubs, and with online tools (like Facebook Groups, Nextdoor, etc.). But sometimes there's not enough people in a hobby, so online's the place to look next!
dosent hurt to try, thats how my friend tauht me yet its still ok to never know all the rules. Even i tend to forget to do a DC roll before doing a damage roll
anyway i gtg bye dnd server
0 found near me
The problem isn't the understanding gap but the language barrier. I'd have to teach them English first 💔
I'll likely just play online now.
Hey, everyone. Do I understand correctly that Savage Attacker just let's me attrack with an advantage every time?
It says "Once per turn when you hit a target with a weapon, you can roll the weapon's damage dice twice and use either roll against the target"
That's not advantage, though?
Oh
Why not? Advantage is when you roll dices twice and choose a better result, isn't it?
Advantage is roll 2d20 and take the higher result, not just any dice.
What does the game styles mean?
Oh, ok
What elements of the game are emphasized: a dungeon-crawl, a political intrigue game, a meat-grinder where death is common. You can always ask the poster to explain the term if something otherwise sounds interesting to you!
can also ask them to break it down by 'Pillars of Play'
like "What split of the three Pillars of Play (Exploration/Combat/Social) do you expect to run?"
a dungeon-crawl will generally lean far more into exploration and combat while a game about political intrigue will mostly involve the social pillar instead
Does anyone know anything about being a bard
What questions about bard do you have?
Have played a couple before.. what are your questions?
What they do and like do they have weapons? I know they play music
You don't have to sing, dance, or play an instrument. You just have to perform or do art of some kind. I've seen a math teacher bard and drill instructor bard myself (online). Be creative with this.
Bards are spellcasters, but they have 2 gish subclasses
Bards are spellcasters who often focus on support, buffing allies and debuffing enemies. They are usually artistic/creative types. They can use simple weapons (seen on this table: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/equipment#WeaponsTable).
And you get this amazing cantrip (free spell) called Vicious Mockery
Chip damage and disadvantage for opponents. Canonically just insulting your enemy so hard they take damage and get debuffed
Bard sounds like something id like
this is the bard section of the basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-classes#Bard
it can give you more of an idea and we can help with questions
I love bard, but they definitely take a little adjusting. They excel at social situations, and their playstyle in combat feels a little different from "I hit the enemy." But I've found them very rewarding.
Thanks for letting me know I'll use that knowledge
Got it
Guys do I need to read the monsters section on dndbeyond ?
If I want to dm ?
it would be very helpful if you at least understand how to use the monster and what their basic stats and info mean yes. Monsters are a staple to D&D and you are in charge of them during combat as the DM
It’s so long that’s why I was asking if it’s important to read
just need to get a grasp on basic infor, stats, and read a few monsters to see how they have various unique abilities so you see how they can all very. then understand how CR works vs character levels so you dont through a POWERFUL creature at a level 1 party lol
my personality traits, bonds, flaws and stuff i can make my own right?
hey I'm really new to DND and i have no clue what the rules are and how to make a character but i know what the species and class and some of that stuff so could i get some info too.

how does a spellcasting modifier work
Whatever your primary spellcasting stat is, think of it like dex or str but for spells
So if you’re a cleric, wisdom is your spellcasting stat
i mean i havent played anything but a spellcaster so you have to compare it better
So if you have say an 18 in wisdom, you get a plus 4 to attack rolls with spells that require an attack roll
what about the roll to hit
same concept as spell attack, except a weapon uses either your Dexterity Modifier or strength modifier. So using a rapier for example with 18 in DEX, you get plus 4 to your melee weapon attack rolls.
Weapons that say Finesse can use dexterity instead of Strength
whats a hit dice
It's used to determine your max HP, and can be used to help some HP during a short rest
Your class tells you what hit dice you have; IIRC it's like
barbarian: D12
fighter, ranger, pally: D10
druid, bard, warlock, cleric, rogue, monk, artificer: D8
wizard, sorcerer: D6
hey guys, quick question for yall, how did you start your first game of dnd ?
Wandered into a game store on d&d night and said "help"
My buddy who was a grade higher than the rest of us had us at his house in fifth grade and said let’s try this cool game my parents play. 37 years ago started this amazingness
agreed to play a game for a friend's ExtraLife stream
thats genuinely a cool story 🦴
hello everyone
hi
im getting started on dnd and i need a table, anyone know where games are hosted or smth like that?
i've never played a game

i`m also new, but i think you pick from roll20, your friends or someone online
Does anyone have a open spot in their dnd
Ty
Hi is there anyone who would like to teach me how it works?
"If you fail a saving throw or miss with an attack roll, you can roll 2d4 and add it to the total, possibly changing the outcome. Once you use this feature, you can’t use it again until you finish a short or long rest." does this apply to healing
No. Unless you somehow have healing that involves a saving throw or attack roll
Which isn't normal

does regular healing work like spare the dying
One better: they also gain consciousness
healing is usually like: you target someone, they gain HP. if they were dying and unconscious, they are neither anymore
what about without a weapon
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game#Actions
You can see a breakdown of action options from the 2024 basic rules here including unarmed attacks.
Taking a look through basic rules or your character sheet will help with a lot of these
what affects the to hit roll
oh wow that's actually really helpful, thanks
what about 2014 rules
The contents of this message is true for both 2024 and 2014 rules
Oh, though assuming you’re not proficient. You’d add your proficiency modifier if you were
Hello
does speaking a command word for an item in 2014 rules cost an action
It's usually part of the action for whatever the activity is for that magic item.
so if i light a fire in it, then speak it's command word does that all only cost 1 action?
In 2024 it's more clear that to utilize a magic item (unless its specified elsewhere) uses the Magic Action
Without any further context, lighting a fire is an action.
Using the command word is whatever action is noted in that magic item (could be a bonus action) but otherwise, yes it would be it's own action.
So potentially two actions involved here or potentially 1 action and 1 bonus action...
what does "When you roll damage for a spell, you can spend 1 sorcery point to reroll a number of the damage dice up to {max(1,charisma.modifier)}. You must use the new rolls." mean
It's allowing you to re-roll the damage, so if you don't roll numbers you like, i.e. 1s & 2s. You can re-roll those dice to potentially roll higher and deal more damage, the amount of dice you can re-roll at once is limited to a maximum of your charisma modifer.
do you have any recommendations for metamagic options? im thinking maybe twinned and empowered
Subtle Spell might be worth it, especially if you want to take part in stealth more effectively.
although i'm not sure stealth is too important in this specific campaign
Also stops from being counterspelled
subtle is extremely cool becuase even if you are in a regular combat, if you subtle spell something powerful your opponent has absolutely zero ways to retaliate
they can't silence you, restrain you or counterspell you to prevent you from casting
I didnt realize subtle spell counters counterspell, thats sick. Is that only for 2024 or also 2014?
im building a 3rd level aasimir devotion paladin. Im curious if i should change my spells…
spells i took
Cantrip light
Prot from evil/good
Shiled of faith
Aid
Compelled duel
Warding bond
Divine favor
Bless
Command
Ward away
im an aasimir
Healing word, heal feat, lay on hands, defense fighting style,
sure you can be anything you want if the dm allows
yay
There is no official rat species so you either would need to get DM approval for homebrew or find the closest official match
I just wanna be a druid that got stuck as a field rat
Since this is the newcomers channel for newbies to learn the game I wouldn't really recommend something DM-dependent and outside of the rules
it's a joke character :]
I'd also not recommend a joke character unless the whole table is on board. They tend to not have a lot of longevity
hey is anyone willing to help me make a character im having trouble making it i wanna make like a monk that uses magic tattoos
Hmm, about about a rat mage? can I do that?
The issue isn't playing a spellcaster, Druid or some other casting class. The issue is the rat species, since it doesn't exist.
All species are good for all classes
mage that got tranformed and now they're stuck as a rat
no magic, no nothing just rat
If they're transformed into a rat magic got involved
https://media.dndbeyond.com/compendium-images/ua/arcane-subclasses/zepvK7DBkeSt6dqv/UA2025-ArcaneSubclasses.pdf the subclass you're looking for is in here
ye, that's basically what happened
Keep in mind that is UA (playtest content) and therefore unofficial
magicifed into rat
You still need to use official game options.
or a one mage got turned into multiple rats
that'll be interesting
ok
what are the game options?
The free Basic Rules are found here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
ahh, I see!
I dont think there are any official rat/ratfolk races/species for 5e unfortunately. You could probably reskin an existing Small sized specie if you wanted to, but that would be a conversation with your DM
For theming, I'll go with rat sage
The closest thing to a rat or rat-like species would probably be either Shifter, Tabaxi, or Harengon, though they're not free
And yeah reflavoring is a good option. Keep in mind you can't get any mechanical advantage from reflavors.
dang it! I'm a broke prepubebcent collage kid
The other way to easily become a rat is to play a druid and wildshape into a rat, but that is not permanent
So even if you're flavored to be rat-like, you can't say, be small enough to fit in mouse holes, nor have the Tiny size category, etc
If neither of those options satisfy your cravings for a magical rat character, you'll have to speak with your DM about custom stuff
Can I be a tabaxi or a racoon?
Unless yeah you use an official game option like wildshape or the Polymorph to transform into a rat temporarily. There's certain caveats of what you can and can't do with such options, however.
There are no straight up animal options. There are bestial humanoid options, like Tabaxi yeah
ok, can't go through holes, bars, or whatever but can I be a hybrid?
ye that, I wanna be that!
Tabaxi and other bestial humanoid options aren't hybrid species
DAMMIT!
They're just humanoid species that look like a certain animal.
So a Tabaxi isn't half-cat half-human
ok I can do that
They're cat people
ultimately there is a fairly limited set of official species. If you arent satisfied with a reskin or workaround, ask your DM if you can work something out together
kk thank you
Im a first time dm and Im running dragon of ice spire peak tomorrow. Im totally lost and don't know what to do at all can anyone help?
I'd recommend reading this guide: https://howtogm.guide/
Just apply its suggestions to the adventure you'll be running!
thanks

You could check out #dnd-discussion and ask there!
Anyone willing to show a fella the ropes?
Hi all good to be here!
Man the #looking-for-dm channel is mega dead huh?
There are a lot more players than DMs, and at least from personal experience and what I've seen, it's gonna be lot easier for a DM to make a post in #looking-for-players and wait for the players to come to them, while the DM has a set time and game which the interested players can see and agree to before even applying, rather than go fishing in looking-for-players onne player at a time, where players also often leave out major details from their posts, so it's gonna be time consuming to go through the posts, and possibly having to ask and then wait for an answer
It's decent for if you need like, one additional player, but I couldn't imagine getting a game together by going just through that channel
i still feel like it would be more useful getting others instead
How exactly do gaining hit points work? Is it max + con modifier at level one and then higher than level one roll hit dice and add con modifier
you are exactly correct P&cake
you can also take the average instead of rolling
Hi
welcome. feel free to ask questions
Hii I'm new to D&D and I pretty much have no idea how to play lol, I have a family friend who owns a players handbook but my parents won't let me read it until they "look at it" to make sure it doesn't "feel wrong"?
Yess
hmm okayy
Well not really a boardgame. A more accurately it would be a tabletop roleplaying game
hmm sounds coolll,, also will people teach me how to play or do i search on the internet

I don't think we have any free official 2024 adventures yet. But Pinebrook is so stripped down that I think you could still use it as a first-time outing.
Ok thanks 😊
I'm a big fan of deep sea creatures, is there any octopus/squid race to go with my fathomless warlock?
Nope, but you could reflavor an existing aquatic race.
Appreciate it!

Is there a guide that explains the mechanics of DNDs wizard class and scrolls? Like long rests for spells, what cantrips and how "prepping" spells works? Things like if you're able to switch out spells out of combat and the limits of doing so
It's my first time playing a Wizard. I'm doing some prep before the game starts
Most of that is in the class details: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-classes#Wizard

Yeah we have #character-discussion to get character feedback and discuss your character
Set your D&DBeyond character to public and share the URL and folks can go and review it.

If it's private no one can review it
i can remake it
Just go to the character settings and set it to public

Are you on the mobile app or the website?
Yep!

And ask folks in #character-discussion for feedback and suggestions and as folks have time and ineterst they'll respond.

Hi
Howdy. Feel free to ask questions
I got a question. Is DnD like an actual company and not a game? Like does every dnd follow the exact same rules??? I’m confused
Don’t judge! I’m brand new
D&D is produced by Wizards of the Coast - it is like a division of WoTC but it's also a TTRPG Game system
D&D is made by "Wizards of the Coast" who are a game studio owned by Hasbro, the toy company
Great way of putting it
There are a lot of different versions of D&D and most of them have completely different rules
Okay so dnd is a type of game not a specific game?
D&D is franchise
D&D 5th edition, 2024 version specifically is the game people are talking about here
Right so when you play dnd every campaign rules can be different?
it is a brand name for a game style known as TTRPGs or Table Top Role PLaying Games. It is the OG TTRPG
I would say that 95% of the D&D player base are either playing D&D 5e (2014) or D&D 5e (2024). Both games are extremely similar
There are some niche groups playing D&D 3.5 (completely different game) and AD&D (very old and completely different game again)
Interesting. I wanna get into dnd but I literally no nothing other then “make up a story, go through story, attack monsters, “ not lying. I just love fantasy and the idea of playing a made up world with total freedom
They are the same game with older rules.

Hey guys! I'm trying to get into a Paladin class and I'm wondering what kind of dice set I need? Like how many d4, d6, etc, will I need to play the class properly at any level? Thanks!
d20s for checks, d10 for hit dice, d8 for smite (and maybe for a longsword), d6s for other spells
but realistically you should have at minimum 1 of every dice type, and 2x d20s
Get a whole set of polyhedral dice - that is 1 D20, 1 D12, 2 D10 (or 1 D10 and 1 D100), 1 D8, 1 D6 and 1 D4
You can also use online dice rollers if your DM and group allow it
You can also succumb to a dice collecting addition, but your mileage may vary
But for real if you want physical dice you can get by with just a single set. I’d recommend 2 just on personal preference. If you’re playing online or don’t want to buy dice online rollers are the way to go. Even Google has a dice roller (look up “roll 1d4” to see)
I agree with 2x physical sets.
They can be about for about $10 each at local game / hobby stores, or if you're willing to go the TEMU route I think you can get full dice sets for as little as $2 or $3 online
thanks guys! I really appreciate your help!

I also saw online some spellbook cards, will that be useful as I'm learning? or is it just a fancy accessory?
just a fancy accessory, you can easily look up or reference the rules for them elsewhere
An accessory, not required.
Suggest looking at teh free basic rules for reference

cool! thanks again!
Hello!! I’ve just started playing D&D, I’ve only done a oneshot with 2 other people so far but I love it so much. I’m having a hard time grasping the spell casting classes though, does it get easier? 😅
definitely gets easier :) the concepts are not hard, just somewhat ill-explained in the book
what are you having trouble with specifically
as with most things, it gets easier with practice
I think the biggest thing I struggle with is knowing how the spells work with ability scores (I’m not even sure if I’m explaining this right), essentially a lot of it! I was playing a ranger and I mostly only used my long ranged attacks bc I wasn’t sure what to even do and how to pick spells
Or which ones would be best if that makes sense
Ok last question, I’m sorry, besides a dice set, what other accessories would be considered useful and not fancy like the spellbook cards I mentioned before? Like stuffs that’ll help me with my gameplay, knowledge and enjoyment
character sheet, binder, pen or pencil (your choice), Player's Handbook or a phone or print-outs for stuff. 2x Dice Sets
I think that's about it
What’s the binder for?
As a player? It depends if you ever see yourself running a game. Personally, I think everyone should. If you do expect to run, having the Player's Handbook, Monster Manual, and Dungeon Master's Guide would equip you with the core books. If not, then the PHB is enough.
well when I play my character sheet is normally on my lap, so I use a binder like hard backing so that it's easy to mark up with a pencil or pen
Ohh make sense!
If you're sitting a kitchen / dining table and the sheet is on the table, probably not as necessary haha
Thank you thank you
Yes, as a player
Players (and even DMs, I would say) don't need to buy much, if anything, to play. The various rulebooks contain lore, adventures, and player options, so those can be nice to have, easing the expectation that the DM needs to buy what players use.
Im having trouble finding a campaign duty to im only on a phone
Hello! I’m new to playing DnD as I’ve been intrested in a few campaigns online for a long while. I’ve been apart of a one shot and short lived campaign and I DM’d the one shot! I am currently planning a new campaign to play with friends and joined to get better at dming and playing 🙂
