ok thanks 🙂 now I just have to do the looks customization
hrllo im new
welcome
Hello new, I'm Mr Smith.
is it alright to have a halfling that doesn't look like a halfling?

hey me smith can anyone teach me dnd
You've got pretty broad leeway in flavoring, so sure? If you feel like you're getting out there, it's probably best to check with your DM first though.
That would be up to your DM Ninja
ok thanks
Glance above, there are plenty of guides.
Try having a read through the first couple of sections of the Free Rules to get a grasp of the terminology, then have a go at putting a character together for practice.
You'll need to pick a class, species and background. Let us know if you have any questions!
with that I give my thanks and go off on unimaginable journeys
i have a character shes a druid
Check the listings in #looking-for-players for games that want people, read the details, respond as appropriate and cross your fingers.
Type /looking and select the option for #looking-for-dm to advertise yourself as a new player in search of a group. Be sure to include your regular availability!
There are other Discord servers where people gather for games. You can find them in #looking-for-community .
Aside from here, you could also try LFG areas in sites like Reddit, Roll20 or the D&D Beyond forums to get started.
Alternatively, visit #character-discussion to show your character off and get some feedback!
I was looking through the DND campaign posts on #looking-for-players but couldn't find one that matches what I need
I need a campaign that is either after 3 pm on weekdays or is on weekends that uses text and not voice
Treid #looking-for-community yet?
If you have, best I can suggest is keep trying and cast a wide net. The more specific your requirements, the harder it will be to find a game that matches
And text only campaigns are generally less common already
I found something on #looking-for-community but now I need to know how to transfer all my player data to level 3
quick question for anyone who has experiancec in creating charecters:Is Batman a good idea for a dnd character? medeival theme.
Is your character on Beyond?
Ah, then you'll have to do that by hand. I suggest using the average HP increase. The rest is in your class features.
What aspects of Batman do you want to replicate? The stealth and sudden takedowns? That's a rogue. His intomidable nature? Fighter. His gadgets and traps? Ranger.
Batman can work fine for inspiration. Though I generally wouldn't recommend actually naming them Batman unless it's that kind of game
I could even see a case for a Dex-focused paladin.
You should be able to lvl up to lvl 3 on Beyond without much trouble. Then you can download a .pdf for that character. If you found a game already, your DM should be able to help you if there are any extra steps.
nvm it was mostly vc anyway
Sounds like a Gloomstalker Ranger with a Bounty Hunter background to me.
worth a shot tho
You might search the forums for a "play by post" game. That would eliminate the need for a specific time.
Hey which book should I read first as a player and how much, players handbook or xanathars guide to everything
Try having a read through the first couple of sections of the Free Rules to get a grasp of the terminology, then have a go at putting a character together for practice.
Once you've got that down, find the bits that you'll need to know. Wizard? Spellcasting. Fighter? Combat.
(Spoiler: everyone needs to know the Combat section)
the players handbook/free rules is what you should read first. Xanathar's is an expansion.
Okay thnx
Player's Handbook
i am new, how would you recommend i try character creation
Well, that.
Pick a class, species and background out of the Free Rules.
Set up your ability scores with the Standard Array method. Pick your proficiencies, equipment, any spells. See what you get.
Finally read all the free rules
Yh I mean the whole point is to make the peak human character smart and a good fighter and strong
Now time to read 387 pages of phb 😅
whats phb
Players handbook
Which one?
Idk I think it's the 2024 edition
Most of the PHB is covered by the free rules. It just expands on the ideas and gives detailed scenario examples. The PHB does have a lot more player options for backgrounds, feats, and subclasses though
Does it have a golden dragon on the cover?
Yeah
Then it‘s the 2024 one
whats unearth arcana, is it dnd with diff rules?
Oki
Unearthed Arcana is unreleased DnD rules or content. Kind of like games that are still in the beta testing. I wouldn't work about UA as a new player.
hi, i would like to ask a question, i'm not familiar with play by post and i keep seeing it, what is it? an example could help
A play by post game is a DnD game that's done entirely by text. No voice chat, no cameras, and not in person.
Hello 🙂
Hello. what do I need to download for tts to play dnd?
No. Tabletop Simulator (or any virtual tabletop tool) is needed to play D&D.
All you need is:
- Game rules (see https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules)
- Character sheets/way to track your character (DnDBeyond has a free tier good for up to 6 characters or you can download and use the PDF sheet: https://media.dndbeyond.com/compendium-images/free-rules/ph/character-sheet.pdf)
- Dice (digital or physical)
- 1 person to be the Dungeon Master
- 3-6 people to play characters
- a way to communicate

I know. but I want to play on tts
Then if you want to use TTS, yes you would have to buy TTS and run it.
I have tts, and have played a bit of warhammer in there. now I want to play dnd on tts. I guess this is the wrong server for it
We don't host games if that's what you're asking?
that I am. have an recommodation?
Well you could look through the #looking-for-players posts and see if anyone is hosting a D&D game using TTS
But otherwise you'd kind of need to set it all up on your own and find your own group to play with.
Check out #find-a-game to learn how to use our Looking For Game channels.
thanks
soo how do i play this game?
Are asking if you can play in person or online?
There are DMs running how to play one shots you can find in #looking-for-players
online ig cuz i think i'm the only one who knows DND in my town lmao
Take a look a #looking-for-players , what people want you to use to play online differs.
i see

Question: I am experimenting more with one of my sorcerer characters. What does it mean if a spell is a Concentration and what mechanics do I have to follow when using it?
ok, so I was building a paladin, and I came across something; I think I understand mechanically, but not practically. Lets take shield of faith and smite...
I currently have 3 spell slots. Smite would take one, shield of faith would take one, then lets say I used sleep.. So, thats all 3 spells used in a battle....
Now, my understanding is that until I do a long rest, I can't cast anymore spells (based on my current level).
Thats the mechanical part.
Practically..... Does that mean I really want to be using spells sparingly? ideally, save them for the toughest battles?
In essence yes, if you suspect that you might have multiple battles before you get a long rest, you might want to space your resources out.
It depends quite a bit on the adventure you're playing whether or not that's a big consideration.
okay, that massively changes the dynamics of my battle plan 😄 😄
indeed, it just might mean the time 'everyone' gets to the boss, they'd likely be low on resources. Of course, I can plan a respite in there, just have to change the narrative to account for it
How do you mean, plan in a respite? I was assuming you're a player. Normally the DM has quite a bit of say if rests are possible.
Additionally, you can't long rest more often than once in one 16 hour period.
Experienced players will usually try to save at least some resources for later fights, particularly a boss. But it is entirely possible to blow everything on the first encounter
Well, I was planning on DM'ing for a group of friends, we're all newbies togther. So, I thought I'd play out my mini story to see if it made sense mechanically. but at the moment, it doesnt - assuming spells work like that normally and the pala aint an edge case
aaaaaaaaaaaah, thats good to know
Every class has at least something can still do without resources
Other than warlock, all spellcasters get their slots back on long rest, with some minor recharges nonwithstanding.
Thanks all, at the moment, this is proving to be an interesting thought experiment if nothing else!
Full spellcasters get cantrips and martials can hit stuff. But they will generally be less effective if they've used everything else
Some builds also care about resource management way more than others
understood, thanks
Concentration spells are ongoing. You can only keep one up at a time. Damage you suffer forces you to make a Constitution saving throw to maintain concentration.
albeit im way out of my depth, i'm having fun learning
So if I use a Concentration spell, I can choose to keep using that spell and not take up a spell slot? (Granted I keep it up with my Constitution saves)
The game is designed this way, that players need to plan and use resources wisely. Typical sessions are designed to test and drain these resources.
eventually, I will bite the bullet and get the DM guide. but need to make sure my friends will actually play first.
Hello everyone! I have some questions regarding level advancement I was hoping to get some help on:
Adjust Hit Points and Hit Point DiceHow does this work? I understand the calculation logic, but where does this apply? I still don't understand the hit point die logic at allAdjust Proficiency Bonus: Does this just add a set amount of points to the main stat of the class? Does it change with sub-classes?Adjust Ability Modifiers: Does this only apply based on the chosen feat? Or is there also a passive increase?
- Whenever you level up, you roll (or take the static number) of the hit dice, add con mod and add it to your hit point maximum.
- Proficiency bonus depends entirely on level, which you see in the table you have linked.
- Adjust it anytime an ability score changes so that it results in a new modifier. See here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character#AbilityScoresandModifiers
You do have to get a feature that specifically changes your stats such as a feat to increase them though
Yep, once it's cast it keeps running, only one slot spent.
There's no automatic stat increases from leveling
You can get by without it but the DM guide is really nice to have and I recommend it, especially when your game gets to higher levels. I am always keen to help out new players/DMs so feel free to ask me directly (DM).
Thanks for the quick answer! Point 1 is still unclear to me, can you please provide an example on it's usage pls?
So my final question: can I choose to not use that spell? Let's say I use a Concentration spell that takes up an Action. Next turn, I can do another spell to be used as my Action, then eventually go back to that Concentration if I need to use it again?
You don't need to keep using actions to maintain a Concentration spell.
Thank you kindly!
So Wizard does not get a +2 to intelligence on lvl up? Or what's the Proficency Bonus in the table for?
So I can do other stuff then eventually use that same concentration as long as I don't fail the Constitution save to keep it up?
A spell whose duration includes “Concentration” remains in effect while you concentrate on it or the time runs out
Say your fighter has 13 hp at level 1. Once you reach level 2, you roll the d10 hit dice or take the average (6), add your CON mod (let's assume +3) and and then add it to the existing hp you have, resulting in a new value of 22 max hp.
You don’t have to spend an action to maintain concentration; you just do, until you lose it or choose to stop concentrating
So what I said is true then. I can do other stuff then just go back to it if I wanted to.
There’s nothing to “go back to”
I think you're taking my wording too literal.
I’m taking your wording as indicating that you’re thinking that there’s an action you have to take in order to maintain concentration on a spell and that’s inaccurate
No. I'm just saying that as long as I use my concentration spell and I don't fail any Constitution throws, it is always up. So I can do other things, actions or not, and can use that same spell if I need to use it again.
No
You can’t “use it again”
There’s nothing to use, unless the spell itself gives you an option to do something while you’re concentrating on it
Yeah, depends on the spell. If it's a concentration spell with an associated action, you'd indeed be able to use it still before concentration runs out.
The proficiency bonus is completely unrelated to stat increases.
It's the number you add to rolls you're proficient in
This was what I was asking.
Thank you! That is so much clearer! Does that mean the Hit Die is spent and I have a -1 for a short rest? Or is it separate?
On more lvl ups, can I roll more dices for a better hit point result or just once regardless of lvl?
You only get a stat increase if something specifically says you do
Aaaah so it's a fixed value across lvls, thank you!
You dont' spend hit dice on leveling up, you actually get one more hit die. The rolling that you're doing as part of leveling up does not spend it.
You always roll the hit die associated with the class you're leveling into. This matters for multiclassing.
If your fighter suddenly decides they want to learn some wizarding skills, they'd now add only 4+3 to their max instead of 6+4 like with fighter (assuming you take the average).
So this same fighter would have 2d10 hit dice at level 2 and 2d10 and 1d6 hit dice at level 3.
Aaaah so a player has multiple dice types depending on class and class lvl. Thank you so much! This is so much clearer now
yup! happy to help
where do i find resources to make a character? I've been using dnd beyond but i feel like its sorta limited on subclasses and whatnot. ive only done like 5 sessions so far but theyre all oneshots so i feel like I'll need to make a new character soon lol
Well, the books. The player's handbook as an additional 3 for each class.
if you are playing in person, DMsGuild and DriveThruRPG have a whole lot of free ones in pdf form. quality may vary.
D&D beyond is still a great source. If you get into a campaign that shares their books you’ll see a TON more options. Or you can start to invest in the books too to give yourself options
that too. although it depends on subscriptions.
i find DnDBeyond pretty limiting in its free offerings. however, that free stuff is quite versatile. i just stick to my physical books and 3rd party pdfs for in person.
I am going to be completely honest, I want to know where to start with learning everything or how to get started. It is torturing me not to know how to play especially with my sudden interest in d&d. Any comments or PMs appreciated. Me and my friend want to start as soon as we can.
weird the bot didnt trigger lol

im super confused on some character creation aspects
what specifically are u stuck on
spells and spellcasting when im on lvl 1
what about it?
I meaning which part about the spells/spellcasting is confusing you
how do i know what spells i can use and when
That'll depend on your class. Which class did you pick? And are you using the 2014 or 2024 rules?
as a 1st level paladin you can cast 2 level 1 spells per day
Yup. The list of spells available is here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-classes#Level1PaladinSpells
You can also have 2 level 1 spells prepared.
(it may seem like I just repeated what 39tigers said, but it's actually different!)

Hey all I’m curious with dnd beyond having free basic rules is it still worth getting dnd players handbook?
Asides from the art which is pretty awesome.
Yeah, it includes additional subclasses. 3 more per class. Plus more feats and some spells.
Cool tyvm good to know
and more backgrounds
Ty
The free rules are a great start. if you fall in love with the game like we hope, then yes the PHB is the first best buy u can do.
("like we hope" makes it sound like we're being paid by WotC, but actually we just want more people to share this great hobby)
yes Deva, I didn't mean to make it sound like I am from WotC. I am just a ENTHUSIAST for the game for over 37 years and love helping folks find out just how fun D&D is
I'm trying to make a half Drow bard but i don't know which sub class should i use
I usually just pick the one I like the aesthetic most. And depending on which books I have available.
Wise? Lore. Flashy? Dance. Dangerous? Swords. Manipulative? Whispers.
Well i more or less don't know what sub classes are mostly allowed by the DMs so i would really like it if you tell me which sub classes of bard o can almost guarantee that wouldn't be banned
Oh, then any in the Players Handbook are probably safe.
you're most likely safe with one from the player's handbook
Mind you, there is still the split between the 2014 rules and 2024 ones, so I'd look out for which rulesets the campaigns use before joining, if possible.
Yeah i actually was planning to make 2 versions but right now i'm focusing in the 2024 one
I usually end up only making the character after joining a campaign, because DMs often have some extra bits and bobs rules for creation.
Making a character for practice outside of a game is never wrong though.
I’d suggest learning how to create a character and coming up with a small bunch of ideas for characters so they can fit a variety of games. Don’t look at character creating like buying a car, the one you will use for any and every journey.
You can also adapt character ideas to better fit the campaign
Being a new player to dnd and joining communities have been daunting. I can barely create a character and people are asking me to do all these bot commands and then get annoyed when half of what they are saying just flies over my head.
Much fun lol
Well since it would be my first time i wanted to be ready fortunately in this case i already have a couple ideas for other characters from trying to make one
Right. So have a metaphorical drawer of characters to bring to the table when it fits!
You're not alone!
that might have to do with the avrae bot which connects rolls in discord with character sheet info on DnDBeyond. or was it Roll20?
is it best to just start making characters after reading everything?
It’s a solid next step.
get right in and make a number of characters. experiment.
that is a great place to start to get practice and it helps understand rolling etc
do one offs typically use pre made characters or should you have a few made yourself to quickly add to the one off? my local game store pretty much just does one offs each week for $15-$20 depending on type ($20 for mystery idk what a mystery one off is though lol) game seems kind of pricey to get into but if i like it im sure its worth it
I’ve heard it both ways, so you don’t have anything to lose having a roster of characters to pull out as needed.
Okay cause I think I have a few different ones I would like to make
it does sound pricey to me. but then i have no idea about the GM quality, or what materials they are using, or the cost of FLGS table space.
How in depth should a character or backstory be for a beginner??
A paragraph, at most.
making a few different characters is great. when it comes time you can take the one that's a closest fit into the game's world and then adjust it to work.
Oki, cause I am starting from 0 haha
The popular prompts are the following: 1) What are your origins? 2) What shaped your history? 3) Why do you adventure?
do all games cost to play? I would consider going online or traveling further if there are cheaper or free games to play I only have $77 a month after all my bills so paying $60 of that to play is kind of putting me off lol
absolute maximum for a character's background would be 1 page per level. note that i said MAXIMUM. if your character is a level 1, there's likely not much that happened to get there. i could see a series of adventures between level 1 and level 2 being detailed and possibly reaching at max a page depending on how detailed the writer is. generally, for a level 1, a couple of paragraph back story is good.
Nope, I would say the majority of games don’t have a cost to play.
Mind if I run it by ya'll via pm whenever I finish??
ty good to know i will probably try to find a free game to join
some great things to have in a backstory. an immediate goal that can be resolved in one to three sessions (a reason to join a party). a short term goal that might span six months or more of actual playing (a reason to stick with a party), and a long term goal that will resolve the character's desire or need for adventuring (a satisfying reason to retire the character).
personally once I learn a bit more I want to look into online games
Is looking for a dedicated party hard?
especially when being newer
It takes time and patience.
its like a job application process
Ohh what do people usually look for though?
it all depends. every table is different and every player is different.
The ultimate answer is compatability.
sometimes things just honestly don't click between player and table for some reason or another. and that is alright. it happens.
but the number 1 rules is that no D&D is better than bad D&D. do not stay at tables that feel toxic or dangerous to you.
Should I make about 3 starting characters to have a bit of diversity?
Make as many as you like.
i am taking a 101 course i bought from local game cafe and if i learn how to play and enjoy it i am considering taking their dungeon master course end of march as well and maybe trying to form my own campaign (would probably start with prewritten official stories to learn though) there seems to be a lack of dungeon masters in my area
Yep, there are more players than DMs in the hobby, partly as a matter of that’s how the game runs, but also because folks are intimidated by the role (even though they could do it)!
the lack of dungeon masters is mainly because D&D has more record keeping and planning and organizing that falls on the GM. the rest is that it is hyped up as being way more difficult than it actually is.
Well you need knowledge on a lot of things
False.
?
A DM doesn’t need to know as much as folks think, that’s all. To go farther would be getting off topic for this channel.
Don't they need to know about the monsters to describe em?
Or know about the place the session is set in
to an extent. there's prep and then there's actually being a GM at the table.
Not necessarily. Plenty of folks get into DMing without “knowing what they’re doing” but they figure it out.
Oh okay
Like me, for example. I started dnd as a DM
i've literally made up a 3 hour session based on a paragraph from a published adventure. i made up the monsters. i made up the puzzle. i made up the map. all on the spot.
Wow
And Nugget is hardly the only one like that!
I’m not gonna tell you I was good at it from the start, but it wasn’t that bad. Just run a pre-written campaign instead of making up your own setting.
okay, i lied, i just used the stats of an imp since i landed on that page and then re-skinned it.
Hmmm hey idk how much should I read the phb
-# I did not even know it existed when I started
I just read the Free Basic Rules
There way too many pages xd
Oh Done that
The first two chapters of the 2024 rules is probably enough for starters.
Six.
you can always look up the details of monsters and spells later. nobody is expected to memorize the total of that.
Infinite, but 6 slots
Hmm not enough
its never enough. ha
i have an art folder bursting will just official and 2nd/3rd party pre-generated characters. that doesn't even include any characters i have made.
Yup
I don’t have the link on me tho
Do you know someone who does
Was thinking of this one (forgot I had it saved)
https://media.wizards.com/2016/dnd/downloads/5E_CharacterSheet_Fillable.pdf
Both work tho
i ended up filling a lot of the spots on DnDBeyond and then exported a 5 page one. then went through and deleted all of the form fillable stuff for a 5 page blank i can print whenever i need.
does DDB export to the 2024 style now?
Haven’t a clue
Omg this is perfect
Infinite characters now
Though I gotta learn how to fill it up but I'll figure it out probably
lately at the table i've been using the Northlands 2024 blank from Kobold Press. i just like the layout personally.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character
might help. It’s a character creation guide
What do alignments do?
any suggestions for fun builds for a level 4, jail break one-shot?
It’s a description of what your character’s ideals and actions have displayed in the past. Doesn’t have almost any impact mechanically most of the time.
Elf rogue with soul knife subclass
Monk! Just monk!
ooo i have a binder with page holders i used to use for poetry i wrote (wont get into that here) but i could maybe fillout and print character sheets and bring a binder of homemade characters to one shots and such i could make like a hundred or so different characters for different flavors of game.
makes your wheels drive straight. j/k it is an older system which organized character's expected behaviour and reputation. good(selfless) vs evil(selfish) and lawful(orderly) vs chaos. each one had a neutral option in the middle.
Idk though it's my fav though without playing it xD
Soul knives would be very good for prisons actually
I did a oneshot with a tabaxi shadow monk, but magical darkness didnt work out for the rest of the part 😄
What is the main thing that soul knife does
You want something that can fight without needing a weapon. Soul knives create their own weapons that are disposable
I don't really understand the term psionic
Psychic
I believe we're going in to break someone out so we'll have weapons to start off
It used that term alot in the subclass description of it
Also what kind of weapons?
Normal swords or weapons made of light or some material you make?
There’s a trick you can do with it actually, leant it from someone here, where you cast it on an object (for example a golden tooth. Then, when you want it remove it you can close your mouth, or open it to release the darkness. No action required.
Daggers, made of psychic energy
Can be reflavoured to anything. Actually not sure if it just says arrows.
love the idea of the monk giving a massive grin then just vanishing in to the darkness lol
It would be cool if I wouldn't need to carry 200 arrows with me all the time
200 arrows seems excessive to me for some reason.
Nah, it’s a seperate weapon
shadow monk with a dip of rogue gets sneak attack?
A melee throwing weapon
So you can use it in place of your bow
Oh wait that's a good idea
It’s a thing. Not spectacular, but not bad. Monks just don’t multiclass too well.
They just really like their own levels
Can I summon many daggers and shoot them all together like rain
i think there's an actual spell that does that.
Oh really?
Don’t believe so. You just summon a psychic blade
but now i'm trying to remember if i read it in the book or if it was one of the spells from Neverwinter Nights which used 3rd edition rules
Ah I see well no worries
Do half elves benefit from soulknives?
I thought maybe there good with magic
half elves are from the 2014 rules. i dont thinkthey exist in 2024 rules anymore
hiii im new here
welcome
thank you
... Seriously???
Damn it
2024 rules eliminated half elves and half orcs and half anything else.
Yeah, you're just supposed to pick one and flavor it now
Unless you're playing Eberron. They got to keep the, what are they called, Korrovar?
you can always ask your DM for a mix and match of specie traits
Half lings too?
Probably not
halflings got away with it because there were no regular Lings
Guys! I need some help! I am completely new to dnd and I want to start playing with my friends. What do I need to start? Are 2 people and a dungeon master enough?
somewhere out there i'll bet there's homebrew tallfolk halflings that are just called "Lings"
lol just reminded me of lingscars
Fullings
there's a Lord of the Rings setting for 5e D&D.
guys could anyone help me please?
1 person and dm is enough
More is better though
and how do i play
More fun
Not recommended, but technically enough
The game is designed for 4
Does your dm know how to play
I’d say 3 is the lowest I’d go personally
I am the dm and no
Read Free basic D&D rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
Oh then I can't much cause I'm new myself
But I dont know how to start

I'd say not
It is an imagination game though
oh I am sorry
Never too old
cool ty
Nah don't be I can play online
I’m a busy adult and I play D&D with my kids.
More specifically, half-orcs and half-elves exist in the setting, they werent retconned out. Its just mechanically they use either Orc stats or Elf stats
Do I need anything to start playing dnd?
dice help
anything else?
The free rules, character sheets, dice, a Dungeon Master, other players, and a way to communicate
Having a good understanding of the first two chapters of the free basic rules is all you really need to play
at least as a player, being a DM can be a bit more involved
But you always have your trusty Google with you too search up terms you don't know
i got a mystery grab bag with 5 sets of dice for only $30 i think it was a great deal. my favorite is this nice yellow set that has a dragon instead of a 20 on the D20 dice. i can yell "I roll dragon!"
Do I pick the characters statistics like what they carry their shield etc?
you do pick some starting gear in character creation. it depends on a character's class and background.
if i am the dungeon master?
the players generally pick that. as the dungeon master, you have ALL of the equipment and gold. muahahahAHHAHAHAHAHAAAA!!!!!!
What do you mean equipment and gold? where do I use these?
You don't
as the dungeon master, you generally don't play a character. you represent all of the characters and the world of the game.
You are the giver
the Dungeon Master is the setting that the players interact with
and isn't it boring without having a set?
that includes the world around the players, along with any NPC's said players may encounter on their journeys
so when a player says that they want to pick the lock, and they roll, the dungeon master tells if they passed or failed. and also say whats on the other side of the door
and isn't it boring playing without a set?
wym by a set?
it can be. it depends on the table. it can also be hilarious, or terrifying, or exciting.
On the floor?
by a table i meant a physical table. like to write on and sit at.
I mean you need people to play with if you want to be the DM
but generally, when people in here say a "table" they mean the group of players and DM.
Like the terrains?
yo guys i know literally nothing about dnd, but i actually really want to. Could someone explain me the very basics and if possible grab me under your wings and give me company for playing?
If you mean a physical table, you can play virtually, there are a lot of tools online to help play d&d
oh. you mean a map. or miniatures.
exactly

you can just draw a map on paper. you can use anything from store bought fully painted miniatures all the way down to crumpled bits of paper to represent the characters and enemies
Yeah
what is better?
It's just to amplify your imagination and make it more immersive I think
I literally poured a bag of dice on the table yesterday to represent the monsters
Cool
My group was fighting 100 space guppies so it seemed appropriate
I can imagine their stress xD
a map often helps in combat, or anywhere people need to know where they are in relation to things. there are many situations where you don't need a map because distances and proximity don't matter. like a social chat with a bartender in a tavern.
There's a few different ways to play...
In person - whats called theatre of the mind... so the DM describes and the players imagine, or some will do sketched out maps, others will go the whole hog and have a tv or projector on the table or physical 3d printed terrain....
Online - there's software which allows the DM to share maps, players to move their characters, visual effects etc
where do I get a map
various different tools, or map creators have patreons where you can download them... have a google
you might actually do really well with the real life physical box of the Heroes of the Borderlands Starter Set. it comes with dice, maps, rules, cards, adventures, and tokens.
thank you so much for the help
there is also the Dragons of Stormwreck Isle Starter Set, the Lost Mine of Phandelver Starter Set, and the Dragon of Icespire Peak Essentials Kit.
these are all older box sets and using the 2014 rules, but they have a good amount of stuff and content
those starter sets do look nice I may consider buying one next month if i want to try dming I used all my money this month on the fudementals of being a player (lessons, dice, dice bag, and players handbook) and some bg3 artwork of a few companions because why not lol
and with the heroes and borderlands starter set how much will I play?
well, that all depends on you and the other people you want to play with. you can re-play the adventures later too, its not just one and done.
maybe expect like a 3 to 4 hour sitting once per week
thats pretty average
but to have a nice session shouldn't I get a huge map?
there is a bigger map, but you don't play on it. a big map is used to pick where to go. then the smaller battle maps are used to represent the immediate world around the players.
Not sure a gold tooth would work... spell says "Alternatively, you cast the spell on an object that isn’t being worn or carried"
i have not tried dnd but in other games i played we just used our imagination and the dms words i think its called "theatre of the mind" play but may be wrong. and that worked perfectly for us
Ah right. The example they gave me was a coin between your teeth, not a gold tooth
personally don't get on with theatre of the mind
it all depends on where and when used. not everything needs a battle map. but i do agree it makes things a whole lot easier.
Yeah won't have to remember everything
could you just use a background image of your location instead of a grid map? like im just spitballing here but say you want your players to go to different locations with like a lake or a tavern could you maybe draw or find art of something similar (or use ai to make it) that way your players see they are in a swamp with a lake with a dark tower in the middle
yes. a social encounter in a tavern doesn't necessarily need a map. distance and range and positioning isn't required to grab a meal and talk about what ruin to plunder next
but having a really awesome painting of that tavern's exterior can really help set the mood
ty
i sort of like idea of maybe bringing a laptop as a dm and having artwork that you can show the players to get in the enviroment in their heads. or a binder with printed images if dont have a laptop. have like a set of images for locations your players might end up in set up pre session
or if you use pre made characters for a one shot have a set of artwork for each character like maybe 5 for each toon the players could maybe choose to represent them. (not all one shots need to have this but say you have one that is more pre generated)
Yeah that's cool
even as a player it may be neat to bring artwork of your character for other players and dm to see what you look like. I know a lot of people are more visual in terms of learning and enjoyment
Hello everyone ! Can someone tell me I am trying to get the free starter pack in dnd beyond page but it asks for credit card though it’s free
Even on the app?
Hii, i am 100% NEW and i would like to know more about D&D ( Only player side ) and find people in my near to play with but i have 0 experience and 0 knowledge about most of the things so what would yall recommend me to do?
Read the free rules, which you can find a link to them on DnDbeyond in #learn-to-play
So for a new person to D&D who likes both sides but is just starting out, would you(anyone) reccomend to start as a player or DM?
Player 100%
Its like, 10x easier to learn everything without managing 5 other characters
idk if this is the appropriate channel for this if its not i appologize. I got a dnd your adventure begins cooperative board game for 2-4 players. does anyone know if this is any good? I got it about 10 years ago now but we never opened it as my family has not shown interest in dnd but im thinking of trying to convince them to try this board game with me
What class would you recommend to a new player, specifically for RP related stuff? I am not worried about a class's combat, abilities, spells, etc. being too complex. I just want an interesting, consistent character without trying to be obnoxious and seem like they're stealing the show. I was thinking Cleric or Paladin? Seems like both classes have natural ways you would want to take the character in terms of RP. I also would like to play a Lawful Neutral or Lawful Good character, so that seems to fit pretty well too.
I like paladins for roleplaying cuz of their oath.
I really like the idea of basically letting the oath heavily guide the RP for a Paladin, but I kinda worry about being forced to RP the character a certain way if I don't want to break the oath. Seems like Cleric could give a similar guideline for how to RP the character without being quite as rigid.
How much of a concern really is keeping the oath? If it's not that much of an issue, I think I'm gonna go with a Paladin.
Some of that is going to depend on the DM and how much they think a paladin needs to hold to their oath
As far as I'm aware, the 2024 version doesn't actually have an rules for losing power based on failing an oath
Hello yall, also sorry if not the right place, but got 2-3 noobs ( possibly more if they get fomo lol) wanting to learn to play, myself included. we would prefer a saturday night around like 9pm cst can work with day and time of course just that would be prime. so if there is any dms with the time and willing to teach us noobs with either adventure or death lol please dm me.
You're right, this isn't the place 😉
You need to use the steps in #find-a-game to post in #looking-for-dm
Though I will add that for something that specific, you're probably better off having one of you biting the bullet and DMing yourselves
Im not 100% new but haven’t finished a campaign due to whatever random reasons unfortunately. Finally made the time and just looking for a basic campaign
yeah i thought about it, id be terrible im pretty sure tho lol. thanks tho
One of the modules would be great idk how to start
There are some free things available on DDB, though I'm forgetting the command to pull up the list right now
DMsGuild also has a significant amount of PWYW or free adventures
hello again yall ty for all the wonderful help last few days teaching me some good info on game. I was wondering if i want to get started on being a dm is playing a pre written campaign such as one in starter set with me as dm and only 2 players doable? I can probably convince my mum and sister (probably not my dad) to play with me so i can learn how to dm. and then onwards can 2 players play a non pre written campaign if they want to continue?
That’s probably a great way to get started
cool tyvm
surprisingly my dad says he will try it next month after i learn how to play and buy the starter set and my sister is very interested so if i get my mum to join it will have 3 players. biggest thing keeping my family from joining regular dnd is nerves and such but with me as dm im a lot less intimidating lol and can adjust to their needs a lot easier my mum in particular says she would get frustrated with other players and does not want to be an angry gamer so this will work better for her
In my opinion, warlocks. Spells aren't too hard to learn since most warlock spells are dependent on your patron/subclass and you don't have too many spell slots so you'll be spamming plenty of cantrips, but won't have to manage slots much because you regain slots on a short rest. The dynamic between warlock and patron can go so many different ways with already many patron options, and is amazing for roleplay
I know the stereotypical warlock is edgy but you don't have to play an evil warlock or patron. Celestial warlocks, among subclasses, still exist
Hello
the Adventure Begins game is like a very very loose introductory to D&D and the forgotten realms. it more bridges the gap between a board game and D&D, though the board game part of it is quite rudimentary. moving on the board isn't much more than a progress bar towards the final objective.
which reminds me, i still need to paint the miniatures that come with it.
Hey straight
howdy
Let us know if you have questions
Tyvm I may start out with family playing that but more likely play the starter set of actual dnd. I will probably make it easier by writing and printing a cheat sheet for their characters so they don’t have to think as much and can go in with just the story and such to focus on
I would hate to push them away at the very start by sheer complexity
if you are using pre-generated characters, i highly suggest you print out a small spell book containing the spell descriptions of the spells only available to that character. it doesn't have to be fancy. you can do something similar with other pre-gen character abilities.
Awesome great advice
start them with the Adventure Begins. it has lots of opportunity of "describe how you solve this problem using only what you have in your inventory"
Will do
hi
I’ve Never played dnd
Hello friend
that's okay, everyone starts out somewhere

What is it all about
a bunch of people sitting around a table, saying a made up story together and then rolling dice for random things and uncertain results. and then there's rules on top of that.
I wanna play it someday let’s play it together
you are in a great place to learn how.
@queen jungle Have you read the basic rules?
Nope
well, not literally learn how to play it here. but we can point you to some really good instructions
Ah I wanna play it in here 😭
there are other places on discord to play it
Hello, how does one find a D&D group?
then I suggest doing so, you can find link to them under "free rules" in the #learn-to-play channel
just not in here
Which ones
the #find-a-game channels
Thanks,
I’ll read it another time
cool, as long as you do at some point, although I would recommend reading them before you play
I made a character with dndbeyond and she has 13 hp
sounds pretty good for a level 1
millie, if you add me as a friend i can direct you to info about the hellfire club box set, some other stranger things related D&D stuff too. and the older stranger things starter set which has resources up on the Hasbro site.
I'm kinda confused with the whole spells and cantrips thing
can I just use some of them whenever?
cantrips, yes.
You’re not underage right?
last i checked, no.
Well my potential group of players is dwindling my mum says she is not interested at all and my dad is on the fence.
Can you play dnd with 1 dm and 1 player? Or would that just be silly? Maybe I could idk add dm controlled side kicks to help the 1 player.
My sister is very interested in playing and my dad “may” try it so at most 2 players at minimum 1 player
And any advice for such a small player base if it would work at all would be appreciated
Two players and a sidekick they control is fine.
Awesome thanks and if it’s just my sister (and hopefully my dad) I can design more personal story campaigns and make encounters easier and maybe start them off on a higher level with more abilities and such to make it easier
I recommend some low-level episodic adventures to begin. Get them used to playing first.
Ty will do
can I send an image of the character I made with dnd beyond/
is a -2 strength modifier normal?
in this server you cannot
oh ok thanks:3
yes it can be normal. It depends on what method you used to determine your ability scores. And it can be okay depending on what your class is and what you are going for
the website that I used for the ability scores was dnd beyond and my class is warlock (I chose randomly so 😭 )
if you are a spellcaster, maybe you want your character to be physically weaker. You usually want flaws for your character so that your strenghts shine more
Warlocks don't need Strength (though a baggage handler can be useful).
For warlock you'll want your charisma to be your highest stat. Dexterity or Constitution can be the second highest ones. But it depends on how you want to play your warlock. If you want them to be wielding weapons and be close to the ennemies, then strenght should be higher. But for the general use of a warlock, strenght doesnt need to be high
I would personally have no problem with my warlock having a -2 strenght
for me it happened to be strength -2, dexterity +1, constitution +0, intelligence and wisdom +2, and charisma +3
yeah I think thats perfectly fine!
okay, thanks!
lol I just checked and my athletics modifier is -3 ???
Hello everyoneeeee
Helloo
Evening! let us know if u have any questions
oh thats a little more odd then. If your strenght modifier is -2, your athletics modifier should be -2 as well, unless you have proficiency in athletics, but that would make your athletics higher, not lower
should I just let it be?
You can send me a private message and send me a picture of your dnd beyond character and maybe I can help
o ok!
I think if the stat is blue on DND beyond it's got a manual override on it so I'd check that
Someone wants me to DM for them and some friends which is fine but they've never played and it's been a really long time since I was a DM and also a while since I played. What's a decent thing to start with for them as new players and me to relearn dming
Some free adventures here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1943-five-inexpensive-tools-on-d-d-beyond-to-make-dming

Most DMs enjoy having new players to teach
Thats so reassuring i didnt know if i was gunna eventually join up a group and just get violated for being new in here😭
Oh my goodness the players handbook is so beefy lots of pages to read and memorize
I am like on page 10 and it’s already a lot to take in but I’ll try and read a chapter maybe chapter 2 as well before Tuesday when I start playing
Trying to create a gloomstalker fighter build does anyone have a decent up to date guide on one? or whats the most fun gloomstalker build to date atm? i really like the stealth ranger aspect but i was told full ranger is not great
Although I am hella new to D&D, one thing I can recomend is that don't worry too much about memorising everything, read through it, get familiar and let the experience be what makes everything sink in. As far as I know, even vets go through the players handbook every now and then to check stuff. Have fun!!

Its 7 gloomstalker for the free wiz saving profficiency right? Then rest assassin rogue? Idk about fighter but thats the usual combo gloomstalker and rogue.
Rogue assassin you get crit on a suprise attack. If you are invisible that is or unseen dm could rule it as a surprise. But the combo secures at least first round high chance to crit.
I would recommend to get control flames cantrip, to turn off any light sources. That way you can always be in darkness @heady crown
Hi! I'm planning on DMing for the first time for my friends to start a new campaign in Frozen Sick because we postponed it due to holidays and family, but I wanted to ask if there were any tips or anything to know when DMing because I'm afraid of being too strict on what they can and can't do as well as "railroading" them. Help?

?dmtips
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
And don't foget to hit up #dm-discussion!
ohhhh thank you lots mate
First thing you should buy DND complete newcomer
Well the free rules is enough for now to get folks started.
If they like it well enough, then the Players Handbook is a good investment
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).

- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
If you’re afraid of being too strict, then just say “yes” to everything
That's not a great DM advice actually
The rules don’t actually prevent a whole lot - generally what they do is prevent you from getting too many advantages and taking too many turns at the same time
Being able to say "No but" can help guide the adventure to better places
You can let your players do whatever they want - you don’t have to mechanically reward it unless it’s moving the ball forward
That I can agree with!
I love clicking on this channel only to see one Dyno macro after another. Ya'll must get so tired.
you know how many folks keep joining the server and want us to teach them D&D one on one?
"Where do I start?" Here. you're here.
Which is weird because that’s the worst way to play it
Spending some time reading a bit about the rules of the game certainly seems like a good way to... learn the game.
I agree it can be daunting when faced with a whole book (if you get PHB) but I am taking it one step at a time and I am dog earing the pages I find really helpful with like tables and such to memorize
I figure I will learn a lot by actually playing and just reading enough to get me through the door (I am on page 16 of about 33 of chapter 1 - social interaction section)
I think if I were to try and sit down and read whole thing before playing I would be like “nope! I quit!”
I may sort of switch to skim reading what’s really important it’s sort of like a textbook in college not a novel you need to hang onto every word for full plot understanding
Correct me if I’m wrong please as I may very well be wrong on this
Oh absolutely. I don't recommend thoroughly reading through the entire book
Both because that sounds like a pain and its unrealistic, and its unnecessary
I do plan to read chapter 1 and probably 2 pretty thoroughly because they seem pretty important but all the other stuff seems more situational
oh yeah those are key
read 1 and 2 and bookmark the Rules Glossery and you're golden
Ty I just dog eared the rules section for easy finding. Plan to continue dog earring table sections of ch 1 and 2 as I get to them (don’t need every page of ch 1 and 2 eared I don’t think but mostly the tables and stuff to remember for sure)
Hm...
Do you know how to make a character, basic ability checks, modifiers, core gameplay, classes and combat?
Not yet but I’m sure as I read ch 1 and 2 I’ll learn most of it
Plus I paid $90 for a 12 hour course on how to play dnd it’s four 3 hour sessions every Tuesday in January from 6-9pm
I just want to get a little prepared before hand by reading what I can
I hope it teaches a lot of what I need (the course I mean)
It better if you're paying for it. Gotta get your money's worth
Im really confused on how magic swords and stuff work can someone please explain?
Sure. They magic. They ignore some non-magical resistances, and theyre stronger and cool
But how do they work in game?
Any magic item, weapon or not, will list specifics of anything they do
In addition as said, any magic weapon's damage is considered magical which can affect resistances or immunities
And most common kind of magic weapon is a +1 weapon, where they add +1 to their attack roll and damage
can some one help with my character sheet i dont know if i did it right its my first time playing and am trying to make a character
You can drop it in #character-discussion for any advice!
Well I hope y’all have a great night / rest of your day. I plan to get in bed read some more rules (only a few pages) then try and sleep ( I am boring I sleep around 8pm and wake up really early like 5am)
So goodnight all
ohh thx u
Thx
Hello
hey
Hello all
hi
Fun Stranger Things finale!
big fan of Baldur's Gate, since the originals, Played the 3rd since early Access 2022.
Cool
Glad to be here!
Hey there! Im just about to start my first campaign as a DM any tips??

Also i recommend having a session zero (discuss boundaries, expectations, learn about the campaign and make characters), and always remember to communicate any issues
Oh and don’t script the story too much, remember that you players live the story, instead of you writing it.
Ok thank you!
me and a freind wanna join/ start up a DnD group what command sequence do we do/ are we looking for a DM first or do we look for a playerbase then a dm. im not totally against DMing myself im just not good at it/ am quite new
Well if you want to find a DM type /looking-for dm and look around in #looking-for-players
If you want to be a DM and look for other players type /looking-for players and look around in #looking-for-dm .

Idk, I’ve found it difficult to find ppl that are willing to accept new ppl tho
I just want a good campaign to start yk
As in players who are new to the game?
Yes, like I’ve asked to join 5 campaigns and got rejected
It can be difficult
- There's a lot more people that want to be players than DMs, so there's a lot of competition regardless whether new or not
- It can be difficult applying when new, when you might not really know the best way to do so or how to stand out
- I generally feel most people are fine with new players overall, but there's a difference between someone who's new but has at least an understanding of the rules, and someone who's new and looking for a game to teach them from the start
Just keep at it, you'll eventually find a game! Could even try starting off with one-shots, or even try your luck at DMing 😎
Maybe try joining some one shots before diving into campaign, I'm a DM and I wouldn't commit to multiple sessions with any new person, definitely not a player new to the game
Makes sense
If I were you I'd try and play like 3 one shots and then stop saying I'm new 🤣
You could say inexperienced or first campaign after you've met and discussed with the DM maybe. But if you're confident in your rules knowledge and you've had a few hours of roleplay experience I think you can weasle into a campaign without it being too unethical 😛
Unless the DM is super strict about how many years of experience they want or whatever
Sounds like a good method 😭😭
honestly what me and a friend are doing is posting the LF DM and if worst comes to worst and we dont get anything for like a week i might take another try at DMing
Try #dnd-advertisements , newcomer chat isnt really the right or appropriate place to advertise
Hi everyone I’m very new to DnD and the most experience I have with the game is baldurs gate 3 I was wondering how I would go about telling people I’m new and asking to join a campaign or one shot
Make a post on #looking-for-dm by typing /looking-for dm
For a while now, i've been wanting to get into dnd but I don't know where to start, i mainly want to be a player. Does anyone have any recommendations
Best place to start is reading the basic rules
Basic rules 😛
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
Get familiar with the very basics (you don't have to be an expert) and try creating a character. If you've watched a podcast or something you'll already have something of an idea of what the game is.
If you can create a legal character by yourself you'll already be ahead of some of the games veterans
Thank you, it seems like such a fun game to play but it seems so complicated with all the items and stuff, ill start looking into this.
Thank you!
Are most people accepting of new players or do they usually want more experienced ones?
It'll vary. I would typically be looking for people who are willing to play the game I'm running in the way I want to run it, experience is secondary.
So if it's Stormwreck Isle or something, which is beginner friendly, it's still a commitment of several evenings, 15 hours or so in total. So if it's gonna be 5 nights and you can only turn up to 2 of them I'd be put off.
If you're just wanting to dip a toe in and give it a go, you'd probably be looking more at playing a one shot.
It's just finding the game that fits what you want out of the hobby.
Lets say i want my dnd character to be a robot, what species could i pick to make that work?
Warforged from Eberron is the classic robot faction
You also have Autognome from Spelljammer which is think is mechanically cooler.... But it has a little bit more built-in flavour.
Warforged can really be whatever robot you like
Also possibly a better discussion for #character-discussion
I had this idea for a character a while back, want to know if its possible
Its practically an abanded robot left in a forest, but after a while the forest took him in and not only brought him back, but he came back with the powers of a druid
idk about rules though
There's a lot, I think starting from the start can help, the 2024 rules are in a really good order.
If reading isn't your thing try YouTube, there's a tonne of really excellent "start here" D&D videos (basically one from every D&DTuber under the sun)
I'd personally recommend "you can start playing D&D tonight" by Mystic Arts but that's just because I'm a mystic arts shill
Yeah totally would work - you'd definitely have to check with your DM if it's setting appropriate, but both races I recommended are compatible with such an idea
You'd have to ignore the specific law of each race (like Warforged only exist in Eberron) but we all do that with every race anyway 😝
Thank you, ill watch that video now
Ah you don't have to haha I was just driving home and wanted to get back to other questions lol

how does one exactly start playing dnd I’ve wanted to for a while but I have no idea where to begin
Read up on the first few chapters of the free basic rules on #learn-to-play , and feel free to ask any questions you might have. Then, make a practice character and get it reviewed in #character-discussion .

No
You can spend as much or as little as you wish. The Free Basic Rules is enough to play the game, and dice can be found online. Granted i recommend regular dice cuz they’re not too pricey and are more immersive

In terms of games, either look for local game stores, clubs or #find-a-game

Although I wont be able to give much advice, as another newcomer, I do advise you to use D&D Beyond for character creation. Character sheets can look like a lot for newcomers, and D&D Beyond simplifies and introduces you to character creation really well.
Hopefully you’ll get a session 0 for character creation.
I'm new does everyone need a dice?
Hey hey! You should have at least one dice set if you're wanting to play, however you can always use online dice if you don't have any.
Plus, if you're playing online, you'll have said online tools available to you
I don't have anyone to play with so I'm just trying to figure out the rules better tyy
Of course! I'm new to this server as well, but I'm sure you'll find people to play with and We're usually very welcoming and easygoing on new players.
Good luck and have fun!

Oh one tip- you can hyperlink using Text
[Basic Rules](https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024)
Basic Rules
(On the desktop app, you can also highlight your word and then "paste" your link while it's highlighted! The app recognizes this as you trying to use this type of markdown.)
ye, am aware, but it makes them less obvious and far easier for people to accidentally miss
It's one of my big gripes with the #learn-to-play formatting because it's actually really hard to find the link to the basic rules in there if you're skimming
ooh, interesting feedback. Is it that the colour doesn't stand out of they don't register as links? 👀
If you want help with character creation, the basics can be handled in here, but if you want more ideas for a character and indepth advice, check out #character-discussion !
that can be part of it, I use a more blue background in discord and the word it's tied to is a shorter one so it's very easy to miss; we had someone in here just yesterday that read #learn-to-play but missed the free rules link so ended up with like 100 questions that would have been answered by reading the rules
alot of the info on the playing the game part of the d&d beyond page is usefull for only gms no? like Ac and things like that or do players also need to know this stuff?
Players need to know how AC works, yes; you need to know how to calculate your own and when you're attacking a monster you can intuit it's AC by what rolls miss and maybe consider using something that targets their saving throws instead.
ah ok sorry
Players need to know how stuff like AC works
Def recommend understanding what comes up on your own class sheet at the very least- which includes AC, Proficiency Bonuses, Ability Modifiers and so on.
You don't have to know how other PCs work (No point learning about all those wizard spells if you're a fighter!) or the technical in depth rules (they can be looked up later!).
But having a rough idea of your own PC really helps the first time you play.
what books do you recommend beginners to buy? i know it probably says it in learn to play but i prefer hearing playe's choices and advice sorry if its obvious
Has anyone here ever heard of Tormenta 20's system? How hard will it be for me to DM a D&D campaign when i've only ever DMed campaigns using watered-down systems like Ordem Paranormal and Tormenta? Any recommendations or tips on how to start learning D&D? I fear I still have trouble with improvisation, too. Help
2024 PHB is the big one, xanathar and tasha's also still have a lot of relevance
Forgotten Realms:Heroes of Faerun and Eberon: Forge of the Artificer are good to pick up if you need the subclasses/classes in them
Hay guys i spent some time creating a character and getting myself familiar with the rules. Does anyone know where the best place to try an online campaign is so I can have a taste for the game since i don't have a local community place to play.
i don't have a local community as well lol
we should try joining a campaign together
For players they really only need the Players Handbook. For DMs you kinda need DM Guide, Monster Manual and Players Handbook.
ok so the players handbook alright

ngl some rules take me to read it twice or three times to understand is that normal or am i just slow?
sorry for all the questions btw
If you've never played a tabletop RPG before, that's normal
pretty normal for learning a new TTRPG. Even as someone who's played a few different ones, learning a new one can still take a little time figuring it out.
Just like how someone who hasn't ever played a video game might take a bit to understand the controls
yeah the only tabletop game ive played with hard rules was like one game of warhammer but otherwise this is my first time in ttrpg
It’s normal to not full absorb the rules by reading. The reading part IMO is more to give you a bit of a foundation so that when you play, it’s easier to connect the dots.
i feel like im going to not remember all the rules while playing and always ask questions to others lol
but i mean thats learning right?
Hi, I am a newcomer in dnd and ive never played before, I am also a teenager, but I can never find a game because everyone requires someone older than 18
Hey guys I have a question, I'm totally knew to D&D and yesterday i watched a lot of videos about creating my frist character on DD5 so i did it. I'm a High Elf Rogue lvl 1 and in Racial Features I've Cantrip, so I search what does it mean and all, and I discovered I can have a wizard spell so i chose Minor Illusion. Here's the question : Can I do it or do I have to wait a subclasse or lvl 2, 3 etc ?
I can't even make my first character, I still don't understand the rules that good 😔
If it's from your race then no you do not have to wait
also, most games don't require pre-made characters, you usually talk to the DM first and gain some knowledge and other things on the story, and then you make a character
I have a few good videos but there're in french haha
Cantrips don't require any level based cost, so as long as you have one from any source, you are able to cast it 😎
Okay thank y'all very much, the other spell are gonna come with playing and knowledge or I've to choose it?
Most spells come from your class, and each class includes rules for when and how you get them
Okay noted ! Thanks !! I made the "easy part" now i've to learn and read all the rules, i've watched the basics but still hard for me to undersand haha, feeling like an idiot
apologies for adding my age. i’m 18+, 25+, lol is that okay to add??
i’ve played dnd before for about less than a year, and i would like to use my same character (tiefling | bard). i’m still fairly new so i’m looking for a dm/group that will take their time with me but still throw me to the wolves. my question is, is there a way to just search for one-shot or mini campaigns or do i just have to continue scrolling in the looking for players thread? i’d rather start here then build to longer campaigns (6 months +).
thank you in advance!
You could use Discord's search function, but other than that yeah it's just gonna be scrolling through I'm afraid 😛
Exact age is against the rules, but stuff like 18-25 or 18+ are ok because you're not saying your exact age
lol ugh thank you! back to scrolling i goooo
ahhh okay okay, thank you so much!
There's a good guide to searching for a game by one of our regulars floating around. Let me see if I can find it.
Ah, here we go.
Read it 5 times just in case
Think ill read them 10 times just to be safe

Yeah stuff like that is good. To be honest I'm getting back into DND after not playing for a while and I need to try and relearn some things and get back into the groove if you know what I mean
Both as a DM and a player
So a 2 campaigns are completely different? Like every character is set back to 0 the story is different and a session in like a part of the campaign
Usually.
Most of the time yes
Depending on your DM, if you finish a module at like level 5~6, they might start another one after at a higher level and you can use the same character for that
Sup
Wsyp
Alternitively, if you want to grow the same cahracter over time and over multiple modules, you can always play Adventurers League c:
i have a question does homebrew race matter for stats? i am starting to create a charachter and wanted him to a be a wendigo :>
Race affects your stats modifiers but your main stat distribution should be based on class
Don't jump into homebrew without DM permission - and generally we don't recommend homebrew for folks new to D&D as it's hard to gauge how balanced and appropriate a homebrew is when you have no idea what the core game runs like and how it's balanced.
ohh i see
oh okay thats alot simpler thanks alot
so like if for example a wendigo paladin with no extra stats or anything just a basic paladin should be fine?
A wendigo is not an official player option.
am i able to direct message someone regarding my character backstory? preferably a dm who’d be able to give me some feedback? just want to make sure my backstory and character make sense lol. warning in advance, i did use ai to create my character photo but i’ma do better once i get back fully submerged! lol
ouch-
Species only affects your ability scores (not modifiers, at least directly) in the 2014 5e ruleset. It is no longer the case with the updated 2024 ruleset with the replacement of species ASIs with background ASIs
You can pick something that gives you the closest feel to a wendigo and describe it differently, but that might not be accepted at all tables.
As long as the backstory itself is not AI generated feel free to share it in #character-discussion for feedback!
thats a good idea :>
thank you!
How about give us the 3 bullet points version:
- Where in your D&D game world did they come from?
- What did they do before becoming an adventurer? (usually tied to their background choice)
- What made them take up the dangerous work of adventuring?
Hello everyone, I’m new to dnd, is there a specific game to buy and where to buy it
Start with the free basic rules - check out #learn-to-play
lol oh absolutely not, this was straight from the dome and okay thanks
Thank you

okay i can do this:
- not sure if i’m answering this correctly, but zen is a tiefling bard born from noble parents.
- at the age of 8, zen’s parents randomly dropped her off in front of a temple of sorts, leaving her without a goodbye. there she learned rituals, offerings, music. during this time, zen became a mute, using basic words/music as a way to communicate
- this comes from her abandonment at a young age along with her want to fit in. growing up feeling like an outcast even by the people who gave her life really messed her up, but studying and music really helped her see the power she has in herself, even when no one else does. zen no longer holds anger, as she is a peaceful bard. she is all for peace, but when in combat, no rules apply to her. when it comes to protecting her tribe, she will do anything to make sure no one ever leaves her again.
kay, whatcha think? cliche, makes no sense, i should scrap and start over? LOL
Mute characters are notoriously difficult to play in a game that relies on communication.
Which is why Common Sign Language is a thing now
doesn't always help with selective mutism though
oooooo okay okay, someone else did mention that to me. i’ll figure out how to work around that.
Yeah wouldn't recommend adding any game mechanical impairments without DM approval/ support. But the rest of it sounds okay - lots of room for exploration and ways for the DM to integrate it into the game story.
i liked the aspect of her being more of a doer than a talker, so i’ll figure that part out
Like I have one planned with a friend but they're both psionic (a GOOlock and a Kalashtar) and the friend's character can talk so I would message them things and they'd speak it or something which is one of the easier methods
You could just make them more reserved and not much into social interactions beyond what's absolutely neccessary.
Otherwise, if she absolutely has to speak prior to level 3 and that cahracter doesn't open the bridge link, she uses message usually
not that i would necessarily just not talk the entire game but my narration would be more like “zen walks over to her team member and nods in approval” or “zen hurries and pushes blank out of the line of fire and gives them a pat on their back of reassurance” idk just made those up but so technically i would be talking out her actions instead of saying “hell yes!” or “i run and push blank out of the way, etc. etc.”
does that make more sense? lol
ahhhh
Yep! (also that's a fine way to roleplay if you're not into voices)
this is a cool concept!
That could work. But I also recommend generating multiple characters so you have options, rather than pinning all your hopes on one.
Can someone explain proficiency quickly to me? Im still fuzzy on that
you have a stat called a Proficiency Bonus 'PB' that grows with your character level
having proviciency in something means you add your PB to rolls using that skill/tool in addition to your normal modifier
Expertise means you add it twice
You're better at some things than others. The +2 (or whatever) represents that. If a fighter without proficiency in a skill rolls a 12 on the die, then a fighter with proficiency in the same skill rolls that same 12 on the die, their resulting number will be higher and is thus likelier to succeed.
currently revamping character 2 now!
Aight thank youuu
i just made my first ever character for a campaign and picked wild surge sorceror purely because of gambling. And i have a doubt.
does tides of chaos renew itself when i roll a d20 to see if i am going to roll on the surge table?
renews itself after the next time you cast a leveled sorcerer spell or complete a long rest
also, as part of casting your next leveled sorcerer spell before a long rest that renews it, you immediately then need to roll on the wild magic table
ooh wow
so i dont do d20 to see if i need to roll, the surge just happens if i have used tides of chaos
Tides of chaos gives you advantage on a d20 test (save, ability check, attack) now, in exchange for forcing wild magic later
Thankfully you can't unwillingly fireball yourself anymore!
am i not doing that if it lands on it?
The outdated Wild Magic Sorcerer rules said that you cast Fireball on yourself. The current Wild Magic Sorcerer rules don't specify where you have to cast it, so you can safely cast it at the enemies without worrying about collateral damage.
pretty sure they made the option a 'can' ability, in 2024 so you can opt not to
woaaah
Well no you definitely cast it, but now it's just a cast, not on yourself.
Oh then you're looking at the 2014 rules
Sounds like you're looking at the outdated rules.
misread it, the 53-56 entry had can in it right next to the entry
If your DM is running the game using the outdated rules, then unfortunately you'll be using the considerably more dangerous (to yourself) options.
so yeah, just pick a random point up in the air to fire the fireball at
also unsure if this works different in 2014
And in that case the wild magic surge also doesn't automatically happen the same way as with the 2024 rules. The DM would decide.
that's the 24 version
Oh noo
So yeah, unfortunately you may need to disregard some of the rules clarifications we gave here, depending on wherther or not your DM will definitely use the 2014 rules.
i will ask him. Thankyouuu all for the clarifications
hey guys
im fully new to this whole dnd thing but i love the concept
how do i become a dungeon master?
or do you guys know any servers where there already dungeon masters
I think the best first step is to read through the free Basic Rules to understand how the game works. There's even a section specifically to help a new DM there.
is it harder to be a dm
Yes, it's harder to be a DM
lol i didnt expect an outright yes
but i understand why
i think i would slowly turn towards dming too, i like to change thing to my liking and i like people taking about homebrew stuff
While being a DM does require more of you, it looks harder from the outside than it actually is. So don't be intimidated if you hear folks around the Internet saying they could never DM. They almost certainly could (though DMing isn't for everyone necessarily).
Shoot i just figured that out myself
I'm sorry to ask but I didn't see it in the learn to play or frequently ask questions. Do I need a computer to play or can I use my phone 🙂
Wdym? DND? Cuz if so then you don't really need technology
It's a in person RPG with dice and all sorts of other gimmicks
Not a video game
However you can go on a computer or mobile to make a character sheet of course
I know it's not a video game but I also know that people can play it online via virtual tabletop I just don't know if I need a computer or mobile device to do that. In person isn't really feasible for me

Check out the rules (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024) and #learn-to-play!
They are overwhelming me 😭
Maybe break them down into smaller bits. The first two chapters are probably where you should focus most, and you don't need to read about every character option!
Ok
Thanks btw
So for anything i want to do the dm will tell me wht im going for what dice i need to roll and tells me if it hits or not
?
Pretty much
Not anything, but lots of things. Some things are codified in the rules (like an attack requires a roll), whereas other tasks are the DM's call. It's usually when something has a chance of failure.
Ah ok
Ok but like if i say “i attack this ahhhole” dm will say aight roll such dice with advabrage/disavantage/etc…?
Usually, yeah.
aight
Welcome to the server! You should probably give #learn-to-play a read-through for a start.
So to create my character i want to use one of the warhammer minis i painted can i use it as a reference(without the obvious use of guns which would not be present)
Sure, but be aware that every table has their own preferences and allowances, so not everyone will be cool with that.
I should ask before joining? But as for now for practice and for with friends it wiuld be possible
?
Also its not like a space marine its of those golden boys from age of sigmar and a cultist of chaos and i meant just like the style of them like the look
but i guess i should also ask for the vibe
I think you have license to do whatever when practicing on your own. Plus, it's good to create multiple characters (I think) rather than pinning all your hopes on one.
You also don't have to ping folks participating in a conversation, thanks.
Hello everyone! I have a question for spell casting:
Are Concentration, Ritual and Cast mutually exclusive?
For example, I cannot have a Concertation spell as Ritual or a Ritual has no cost to cast?
Same question for Verbal, Somatic and Material? Can they coexist for the same spell or mutually exclusive?
Ah sorry about the pings mate didn’t realize it was activated i do apllogize
Nope. For instance, Detect Magic is both a ritual spell and has the concentration tag. Ritual casting means taking extra time to cast but not consume a spell slot.
VSM components can be present in any combination on a given spell. Some may only have V or M or S. Some may have all three. Or any two in combination.
Thank you!
Hi 👋🏻
Welcome to the server!
Hey
Hello!
Good evening everyone
Welcome. Feel free to ask any questions you have!
I made a drunk gambling addict dwarf as a character lol
Does that work as a character lok
Ye
LET’S GOOOO
I need help figuring everything out for dnd

Ok thx
Does the totem subclass for barbarians still have the normal rage ability or no
All barbarians have rage as a baseline ability.
hello ,
i am a i supose returning player to dnd and thought this server might be a good place to start
Welcome. When did you play last?
it is indeed
And what can we do to help/what would you like to do?
ummm , im not 100 percent sure , i think the last "campaign" i was in was this weird wolrd kinda thing , it is hard to explain but last time i played i think was when the artificer was added i think thats its name , the guy who can be iron man
well idk where to start . the last time i played dnd it was like an open world kind of server thing
Rules wise or finding a game, or both?
well am i right that they changed the rules in 2024?
There is a 2024 ruleset now yes, though many still use 2014
They updated them. About 90% of the rules are the exact same, and that last 10% is mostly updates to wording, making abilities stronger, or giving players more options.
i see
ah ok , idk if the last time i played dnd i played in a normal campaig or if it was uniqyue
Then I recommend you read up on the first few chapters of the free basic rules on #learn-to-play , and feel free to ask any questions you might have. Then, make a practice character and get it reviewed in #character-discussion .
Once you’re ready and got the fundamentals down, you can check out #find-a-game for information on how to find a group online. To make a post, type the appropriate command in any chat channel.
That should cover everything
i mean i know the bascis of like my race my stats initiative etc but i havent played in like a year
Which is why I recommend you read them to refresh your memory
also is it normal to play with over 400 people ?
Westmarches campaign?
i did think the last time i played it was a bit weird
Ah I forgot bout those
And yeah this sounds like a westmarch
i dont know what that means , all i know was that it was in a discord server and you could join quests or do RP but it was an ever growing world or something
what would we the weaknesses of a party of 4 mages? (wizard, sorceror, warlock, cleric)
yep, that's the definition of a westmarch
Strong melee being with anitmagic field on it
I was gonna just say “antimagic field”
ah i see, i thought it woulod be better cause i could do quests when im free but it was a mainky usa server so the quests started at like 3sm for me
mageslayer, ranged enemies that spread out, sleetstorm, anti magic field, etc
there is a mageslayer
Melee, and an enclosed labyrinth
Best bet would be to find a local/remote party that has a closer time, or play Adventures league, which of kind of similar but let's you bring the same character to anywhere that plays Adventures league content
well i dont have any local sessions that i know of irl . is adventurers leauge new?
It's old. it's the rebranding of organized play
Rather than a set party, you play kind of a free agent and go on missions with other people
those can be modules made specifically for adventurers League or like parts of other Adventures that have been cut up into modules
so its like the server thing i was in before ? westamrch ?
it's different, rather than being an ongoing thing like that, you find games and bring your character and a log sheet of the games you've played
so where should. i start ? there are so many things and options
Read the information in #learn-to-play as well as the 'Playing the Game' and 'Character Creation' chapters in the free basic rules (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024) following along with the instructions in the second chapter to create a character as practice.
You can use (https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/builder) to make your first character as it comes pre-loaded with the free rules and will help walk you through the process as you follow along with 'Character Creation'. If you'd instead prefer a printable character sheet, those can be found here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/resources/1779-d-d-character-sheets#OfficialCharacterSheets
Feel free to ask any questions you still have in #dnd-newcomers, and have your practice character looked over in #character-discussion to ensure your character follows proper character creation protocol.
There's a short interactive module here (https://www.dndbeyond.com/begin/en) to get an idea of the sorts of things you might encounter in gameplay, or you could seek out videos online of live gameplay examples or things of that nature.
Once you're ready, you can head over to #find-a-game to look for a group to join or can look on one of the many LFG discord servers, r/lfg on reddit, your friendly local game store, or anywhere else games can be found.
Make sure you have that done at least and see if you can find a game online. If there are game stores in your area, ask there if anyone is running D&D as well
There are adventure League specific servers or you can go on to roll20 and D&D beyond you can find games on there
so really my first step is catch up on the rules and then make myself a character so when. i join a game i alreday have someone ready?
It's usually recommended to make a practice character prior to finding a game.
You never know if your DM will have special restrictions, or will request certain changes, or might even decline the character idea entirely! That's why we call it a practice character, since there's no guarantee you'll actually be playing it.
i mean i did have a charatcer on my i gues it was called westmarch server?
Although if you join a one-shot it'll probably be accepted because it's just a one-shot
Can't guarantee that
should i makie a new character ? seems as i havent played in at least a year
That's up to you!
well i dont think i made my charcter in the 2024 version of the game . i mean i want to play the game but i think where i live makes it very difficult
Online play is a option, but regardless of how you play, brushing up on the rules won't hurt!
You can keep the concept although you'd have to update the character to fit the 2024 rules
well i know it was anartificer i played cause i was a dwarf in a mech but it was a lot to remember and understand , i did ahve an idea of what i have always wanted to play but idk if its really possible, i only know of a few cool things i can do with the idea
are bards easy / fun to play?
I find bards very fun, but everyone likes different things.
I’d say they’re pretty fun depending what you enjoy
I’d say they’re a bit hard to play, but mostly because they have a lot of choices to make
well i have had an idea of what i have always wanted to do but i havent had chance in the 1 campaign i have played but idk if its possible
I agree there's a learning curve on bards because their support role feels fairly different from a lot of other classes' gameplay.
can i be a fighter as a bard? not the class but like i like combate and attacking people?
You could describe a fighter as a musical/artistic sort, or play a more martial bard like the Valor or Swords subclasses. So yeah.
hey! Me and my friends wanna start playing and we honestly know nothing except very very basic concepts, would anyone be able to help!

i found this thing ages ago which i have always wanted to use but idk what `'it" is exactly https://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/College_of_Metal_(5e_Subclass)
It's homebrew (AKA fan content). A subclass is a specialization within a class, granting different abilities from the baseline class.
Hit them with your flute
i see, so i cant use it if i make a charatcer for a session?
good idea , ooh what about a staff thats a flute
playing pretend has never looked so intimidating omg theres so much stuff
Not without DM approval.
i see, so when the word subclass comes up is that the bard colleges ? like "college of X"?
and then there is one called college of creation where you can make things out of thin air?
Read the first two chapters of the rules and make a character for practice. Think of the rules like a recipe book: you don't need to know how to make everything, just the type of character that sounds neat to you!
like me , i mean i would love to play a rockstar who has a guitar axe or a flute staff haha
Yes, Bard colleges are their subclasses.
Each class has a different name for what they call subclasses.
i see, well i dont really know what classes are good other than barbarian is the simpalist , get shirtless and scream and swing a sword 😅
Each class has its strengths. It just depends on what you want your character to be able to do.
i see, well i would like to be a wizard but thats a lot of reading and spell slots and managing stuff haha
Spellcasting definitely adds a layer of complexity.
yeah , i mean i play musical instruments irl so i thought a bad might be fun ,
No need to keep replying directly when someone is in the conversation, thanks.
oh sorry i foregt that discord auto pings mty bad
Ultimately, if the thing you want to play is complex, yeah, you'll have to do more reading, but you'll probably be better served playing something you're excited by than something simple but doesn't get you psyched!
Tysm
i mean i can imagine how cool it would be to be able to go up to like a goblin and shred on my guitar and then a huge wave of lightning comes out and shocks him you know that kind of thing ,
That could be a bard, but a little altered descriptions and that could be nearly any class!
so any class can "fight"
cause i thought i read that some classes are support classes ?
Support in the D&D sense, not the video game sense.
All support characters are good in combat and deal some amount of damage
is support like a healer?
Healer, buffs/debuffs, that kind of thing primarily but not exclusively.
Not particularly. “Healer” is a weird term in dnd, cuz you can never out heal damage, and they can usually do a bunch of other stuff
For example, clerics are the stereotypical “healers” in dnd, but their damage isn’t half bad
Not all classes can heal, but all classes can attack.
Even bards, the class most “supportive” in my opinion, are useful in combat
So I think "healer" is still a useful term, but it just differs a lot from the video game context.
Whether it be through buffs, debuffs, healing, crowd control, or even just damage via getting spells from other classes later
but some classes are more combat focused?
yeah absolutely
Nope, they all deal with combat, just differently.
two different answers kek
so what does a bard do in combat? stat boosts?
You can deal damage and debilitate your enemies through spells, or buff your allies through spells
could even do some healing
And they dole out inspiration, a resource that boosts ally rolls, making success more likely.
