Hello, I want to invite some players to our community to play with us where can I do it and how?
Should I use looking for player command?
if you want to be the DM yes
I am rolling my first character!! Anyone want to help me through all this?
Sure!
Though you should be rolling in front of your DM…
Yeah I dont have a DM.
Its best to use standard array/point buy in that case
Then just keep in mind none of these rolls will be valid for an actual game
Its both not valid and it could create bad habits
No idea what you are talking about
Most DM's do not accept rolled stats unless they observe the dice rolling
So rolled stats sometimes gives you more stats than the default point buy
I said rolling as in making my first character lol
So there are three main ways to generate stats: point buy, standard array and rolled
?tag new abilities
Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
Well that makes a lot of sense
what is going on jeeeebus
Ah just poor wording lol
“Rolling” usually means to roll for your stats
sigh nvm
Which is a method that should be rolled in front of a DM to be valid
Just a misunderstanding
Anyway, character
What class and species were you considering?
If you’ve decided that far
Ty for the help earlier guys
i think i'll just make a Human and a Tiefling sheet and decide with the DM what fits better
might still throw some more questions at you later tho
Noice
Does anyone know what old Greg's tavern is and have you used it?
ive seen it mentioned before but im like
👋 amazing folks! Started playing D&D at the 2nd edition (that's a long time ago).
Got pretty much all the books since then. But didn't play much.
Can't believe how much D&D has grown. It's so fantastic.
Love seeing everyone here. There's so many people! 🤩
Welcome to the server!
Hey I'm trying to learn how to play D&D and what's the best way to do it for beginners
Read the first two chapters of this (to the end of Character Creation)
Free basic D&D rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
And ask any questions you may have here
Just let me know if there's any campaigns I can join hopefully
Once you’re ready and got the fundamentals down, you can check out #find-a-game for information on how to find a group online. To make a post, type the appropriate command in any chat channel.
I thought that was the point of joining the server
Nah, this server is to find games AND chat
Whether it be discussing characters, getting advice on how to DM, brainstorming ideas for homebrew and worldbuilding, and more, we got a fair few things to do here
But yeah we have a looking for game channels
hey! i'm a newcomer to dnd (this is NOT because of stranger things ahaha)
i'm just a 20 year old trying to connect back into the nerdy things i liked as a kid :3
it would be great if i could get a lil help on how to get started
i did search for some books, but they're really expensive in my country, i was hoping if i could find a link/pdf/epub of the book, anything reliable if it could help me get started!
we cannot help you pirate WOTC books, but there are the free basic rules linked below
Visit #learn-to-play for everything you need to get started!

- [How does it work?](#learn-to-play message)
- [Where do I join?](#learn-to-play message)

thank you!
may i know what WOTC is?
Wizards of The Coast
ah! i have nooo idea what that is. but i guess i will the more i invest my time in it
its the creator of DnD
well, the owner right now
not creator
oh! okay!
thanks so much! may i ask more doubts here?
Anytime!
of course!
hey guys I need help choosing an origin feat, dw its still my choice but its my first character so I cant decide, im writing the info atm
DnD 2024 only
Varyn Valcorin, Human Fighter, I want to choose Eldritch Knight when level 3
I want to focus on high AC, shield tank, kinda of egodriven protector from a wealthy military family
low CHA, sarcastic, disciplined
I'm considering tough, magic initiate, lucky, alert
any opinion is welcome
maybe I can even do magic initiate with batlle master to get some protective spells (I dont know much spelss atm)
Hey so like I dont know how to play and me and 2 other friends are wanting to play and I'm sorting out on figuring out how to play to teach them and I don't know the character sheet or how to explain it or how to do it so if someone can point me to where I can find that I will be very happy
I like magic initiate wizard for shield
I can get it at 3rd level with eldritch knight, thats why i cant decide
.
Hi all. Brand new to D&D but have always been interested in role play games and the like.
I turn 40 this month and I have decided to pursue various things that I havent but always wanted to... first on the list is D&D.
I wasnt aware until last week that D&D could be played online and always assumed I would need to meet like minded people in person to begin.
Any help and tips for finding my first game online would be greatly appreciated.
Then tough and alert are always nice
i forgor what tough does lemme read
the nice thing about magic initiate is
you can be a magically gifted fighter from level 1
you have very limited spell slots and cantrip choice, so this will improve your resource situation
Read up on the first few chapters of the free basic rules on #learn-to-play , and feel free to ask any questions you might have.
did u consider me wanting eldritch knight
would I need THAT many spells
yes thats my point
you have very few spell slots
so another free casting of Shield is very good for you
I can get 2 shields?
what do shields have to do with the shield spell?
I meant the spell, i dont even know how to use it or how many times I can use it
its a level 1 spell slot. at level 3, you have two of those per day
with magic initiate, you could cast shield 3 times in a day at level 3 (or cast shield once and two other spells) thats basically 50% more spell slots
instead of more hit points I can just have a lot more AC whenever I want and never get hit
It's certainly a good spell, but "never get hit" isn't a reliable strategy
Especially not in a game where a nat 20 always hits regardless of ac.
well
22 AC is nothing to belittle
at least when level 1
also as a fighter hit points will increase so thats why i doubt I should get Tough
Does the player‘s handbook tell me everything I need to know for my class?
Tough scales with level
The Free Basic Rules does, actually.
Wait except for all the subclasses. But not even the PHB does.
yes, everything
what I understood its +2 every level after the initial health doubling, so it gets worse overall as levels increase? am i wrong
you add hp every level, but the amount per level doesnt increase all that much
More hp never hurts is the message here, but you certainly don't have to take it
??
what is your question?
+2 on top of +5.5(d10) every level is good, but I think im mostly considering magic initiate atm
more spells does sound nice
Ah a rainbow one.
Don't mind me just passing by I was looking for players. But first I got to look about the server ya know?.
that just means i am both a dm and a player btw
Ah I see
#find-a-game is the first stop then
Aww!! You're a treasure thank you!!!
Hi Guys i’m new
Hi!!

Hi new here. What's the difference between looking for player vs looking for community?
Looking for player is looking for specific players to join a campaign, while looking for community is for communities to advertise their own servers (which often host one shots or westmarch games where there is a series of short adventures in a shared world iirc)
me and my friend have just joined this and are looking to play
Check out #find-a-game . That should give you some info
Clarification regarding nick weapon mastery property-
A rogue has 2 dagger, one in each hand. Uses action to attack with dagger, uses nick to make the offhand attack - do you add the +dex modifier to this attack?
And then can they use their bonus action to offhand attack again? and would nick from other dagger also apply?
All Nick does is move the Light weapon attack (no modifier buff) from your bonus action to action
So
Attack, Nick attack, bonus action free
Does that make sense?
To answer your question: no to all of them
so is frees your bonus action, to hide or dash
and second dagger nick wont apply, but if second weapon is a shortsword would vex apply?
Yup!
It’s a very neat rogue combo
Shortsword attack into a nick dagger attack for sneak attack, still leaving the bonus action open for Cunning Action
Or disengage
should u do shortsword first or dagger first as action?
Shortsword first
That way you apply vex to the nick attack
Okay, and due to nick, the dagger still doesnt use the BA

Hello im new here and really confused about how to find a game thing got any advice for it?
Can I somehow pin these channels for myself?
You can use id:browse to configure what channels you want to see
Silly Discord thinks it's helpful by hiding channels automatically
hello

I installed the dnd beyond app and downloaded the dnd beyond basic rules(free rules) and 2014 ruleset...both were free to download..what are differences? I see on both #looking-for-players / #looking-for-community that many use 2014 rules hence thought to get both ready and get an understanding over time...
although i dont know the differences there is many, if u want to just see the differences there should be videos from "pointy hat" on youtube. they are mechanical differences
I see..Best just to start off....read through the dnd beyond basic rules..and seen the 1st 2 chapters are important..at least to start with?
hey nice to meet you all! i’m rose and
im a complete newbie at dnd, i was wondering if i could buddy up with anyone to tell me the basics! thank
you :)
Hello ! I m looking for French people to help me starting as mg
sure
Can you play dnd with 3 people?
Hello, all!
Try having a read through the first couple of sections of the Free Rules to get a grasp of the terminology, then have a go at putting a character together for practice.
You'll need to pick a class, species and background. Let us know if you have any questions!
idk
i mean is it better to get help by a master
who is offring
It’s better to read up on the game rules so groups are more likely to take you on rather then spend their limited game time having to teach you everything.

Plenty of guides, written and video, free to reference.
And feel free to ask specific questions
i will wait for some one
The community here is pretty good at answering them
who woould like to welcome new comers
Many groups do - but again the more effort you put in learning on your own the easier it is for groups to take you on as a player
Look through those resources Mr Smith posted (see also #learn-to-play)
But if you’re looking for a group to play D&D with check out #find-a-game
Would protection as a fighting style for fighter be good. I have a rogue in my team so I can keep him close and protect him, but it takes a reaction or smth?
many people chose it, especially if another party member will be a melee combatant with them
It does, meaning you wouldn't also have the option to make an opportunity attack at a foe moving away from you.
correct so give up maybe one offensive move to be a defensive helper to your partner. choices choices lol... it depends on how plan to play your fighter
Hello everyone! New here. So my son has become very interested in this (i think because of stranger things). I thought I might as well learn as well as it gives us something else to bond over.
Now we have both done the Beyond interactive thing but we still are strugogling to understand. I have ADHD and he has autism so we tend to both learn practically and with someone teaching us.
Any advice or help would be massively appreciated.
Cheers people!
Hey Conner.
If you have read the basics and did the little interactive thing thats awesome. if you have specific questions feel free to ask here.
Also to get hang of things have you watched any Youtube videos of actual play or listened to any podcasts?
So ive been struggling to find someone actually playing. All i find is people explaining the same rules over and over
Try searching on YouTube for D&D actual play.
Hi everybody
Youtube can be great source for that. I don't personally use it at all but it is great.
hi mello
Ello
play dnd
MY OPINION HERE (and it may not be a popular one lol) you just want to make sure it is not one of the FANCY high budget professional actor ones because it can set your initial expectations of what it is like way to high lol. example of this is Critical Role
Idk how 😭
I would suggest watching Bill Allan's DnD with high schoolers series
Im having fun watching it and actually learned couple of things from there, he also explains everything to them slowly
I'ma go read the learn to play channel hopefully it's not too overwhelming
I made my 9 y/o brother take a dnd personality test
he was 80% barbarian and paladin, but the barbarian bit only applied because he kept saying he'd shoot everything with guns
hahaha
xD
Ok why is the interactive site taking so long to load
D&D Beyond is lagging today I think they maybe working on the site
Ohhhh I thought my internet was going haywire cause I opened two sites from the d&d beyond site and none of them are opening
hi
it lit crashed yesterday
correct which is why i suspect they are working on it today. the forums are down until at least Monday

Am I able to customise my character?
lmao
D&D characters have a HUGE array of options allowing you to make it to your liking
Is there a chinese one
USUALLY (but not always) you make your own character with their help
Will I be able to have a talking hat that has its own abilities
D&D is set in a fantastical world, so races are not like our human races. Look through that basic info some and then come back if you have more questions. many of these things are covered
Alright cya, thx for the big help
maybe as you become a bit stronger character
Done the interactive tutorial
Rogue was fun
Hey can you make your own spells as a wizard or clerk?
Wait do clerks even use magic? I forgot xd in dark souls you could idk though
that would be a conversation with your DM. its not common to make your own spells
clerics are full spellcasters like wizards
Oh I see
Good to know
Clerics use magic but their magic is divine magic rather than arcane magic
So healing or defense type of spells right
Custom spells was in a few UA’s for wizard leading up to 2024, and the book wizard has some similar abilities to that kinda idea
UA?
Well no its just a category thing, I guess Cleric spells are less about direct damage and more about supporting your own team or area control
Yeah
Beta content always ask dm about it as it’s probably op
What is that xd
whats a recommended hero for me?
Sorry I'm new so idk most things
It’s called Unearthed Arcana you can find it in dnd beyond
Your choice I'd say
what do they do then
Ah I see
Do you mean class or basic backstory?
class, rogue and all that
I like to protect people
And aid
Ok, fighter is probably the easiest but cleric or paladin fits the vision
Which ones cooler
All are cool xD
Which ever you can write a cooler story for
Which one can I bash the enemies in while healing and tanking for my team
I'd like to be the general guy
Cleric
Wizards to shoot meteors, fighter to lift massive swords or gauntlets anything really
Alright thanks
Specifically war cleric
hey,im creating my character in level 20 but i dont know how many stats do i have
Yeah they'd prob use a mace I'm assuming
The dnd inspired games ive had never had a hybrid class lol, its always "Priest" with a book
I'll try cleric then
War is a nice subclass
Start with the basic stats and then boost them as you go through your level ups about every 4 levels a stat might increase.
Can you make a rogue sorcerer who uses traditional daggers, swords, bows but also sorcerer magic
I'd say enchanting the weapons with magic would be cool
Quite a lot of you have the players handbook it will show you a decent amount. I think the free one is life but I could be mistaken
Are the base stats all 10 and 15 to distribute?
Maybe
Just use basic point buy
Just imagine enchanting a sword to have a giant sharp projection around it (or some sort of sharp barrier)
making the sword giant
basically green lantern
Yes but solid and sharp
You can use wizard magic* But yes, to some extent at least
Wizards require a staff or something don't they?
or you could also make projections of the sword, like a sword rain?
Oooo
If you want to learn the game reading this could help https://discord.com/channels/516367331358801950/1192567198024208565
Or maybe trick your enemies by making projections of yourself while backstabbing the enemy
I am doing that as I'm talking
ok im gonna have to try dnd now
Perfect
so much imagination
Yup
I didn't know you could play online I thought youd need to get those terrains and pieces, and books and everything which would take time and so much money xd
Ofc it wouldn't be as fun as the real thing but oh well
Nope we can do all of that digitally or in our imaginations
Yup
im a hill dwarf is that good
That’s very nice, what rules are you using to make your character?
as in?
Do you have a physical book or digital
digital im reading the learn to play guide
im not a very good reader lel (i forgor alot)
Ok didn’t know that was 2014 rules, still work but not the most up to date
Some people even prefer 2014
Hey everybdy happy new year
im using 2024 i think
Am a exp. Dm an player i lookin to join a dis cord game
The only thing that does not change is change itself
Aw victums in my camp
Well dwarves don’t have subspecies in 2024, so you can be one just no mechanical difference

Ok thanks mr smith
is Andrius Ryaheart a good name lol
As long as you like it it’s good
Lets keep this channel for questions on how to play the game. #character-discussion is a great place to ask about cool things to do with your character

hi all, my cleric doesnt have acess to Toll the Dead on DND beyond, but I can see that they get it as part of the rulebook lv1, have we build it wrong?
If you don't have the digital PHB you won't have access to that spell on Beyond. If you own the physical PHB there is a workaround, #ddb-support might be able to help out with that.
Is anybody free to talk at all about RPGs and stuff
thank you! Will give it a go
Hello pookies, I'm Arii, Im new to this game and want to play it so bad but Idk how to play or start but I really want to try🥹
do i need to know everything on the DnD beyond basic rules page? cause there is ALOT
and i mean ALOT

@little jackal hola
like theres everything basic for the player dm all the monsters and rules glossary
do i need to know ALL of that?
you need to read the first two chapters of the free basic rules https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
everything under 'Playing the Game' and 'Creating a Character'
Okayy thank you!
Try having a read through the first couple of sections of the Free Rules to get a grasp of the terminology, then have a go at putting a character together for practice.
Once you have that down, look at the rules that will apply to your character. Wizard? Read about spellcasting. Barbarian? Read about combat.
aight will do thank you
Hello
Howdy. Let us know if you have any questions
yo quick question where do i start if i wanna go n make character's. like isn't there some sort of rule around this and I don't rlly know much abt it but for now im planning to make a stupid sounding barbaric character as my first
i tried using fastcharacter.com
you need to read the first two chapters of the free rules, chapter two explains in detail how to make a character
alr i was abt to ask the sc of the text mentioned thx man ig I'll read it first
then build it on dndbeyond or roll20 using the free rules; or even just fill out a paper character sheet
What Meabhy said lol. I suggest using D&D beyond personally is the easiest way to learn
Hey guys, I'm super new to DnD - picked up a PC game which introduced me to the concept and I've fallen in love!
is the game bg3 by chance?
no, thats on my wishlist now though. It was Solasta
ah, I see
wish I'd have found it when i was younger!
better late than never
100% - now I just need friends 😄 😄

Hey how long does A DND campian?
Could be one evening, could be years!
As long as the dm wants to
how long does it ussaly take?
Hours
Anyone mind helping me with a barbarian build? Still a rookie when it comes to dnd
A session on average is between 2 and 4 hours.
That's a session. A campaign usually consists of multiple sessions. For example, one of my campaigns took about a year of weekly 3 hour sessions.
I’d love to start my first dnd rn
Thats a long campagin though right? A short story arc would take a month or so maybe?
But noones lf players rn
It’s not a drop-in sort of hobby. It requires some degree of scheduling/planning.
That's possible, sure. And there are one-shots, which are adventures intended to be finished within one session.
send me a friend request dude, I'm setting one up with a few friends over the next few weeks! I'm UK based, if that helps you
Gmt+8
ouch
But 4 am i go unconscious
lol makes sense
A question about Beyond, if I may! I noticed you can run campagins and encounters from there. How does that work? Is it a sync'd browser session, or do you just share you screen?
Would anyone be able to help me build a barbarian? The forums are down so I cannot ask for advice there.
#character-discussion maybe?
That's weird. That section is not displayed on my discord
might need to use 'browse channels' and select it on - happens to me sometimes
you probably haven't enabled them in id:customize
Got it situated. Thank you.
Campaigns, you assemble your party. Rolls made on their DDB sheets feed into the campaign log that all can see. The DM can also use it to share information and handouts.
Encounters, not so sure, haven't used it.
you can draw on the maps, and 'invite' people to the encounter. just not sure if its a shared session or not. I'll have a play
If all your players are on DDB, joined in the same campaign, all you need is a way to talk (like Discord) and you can play, no additional tools needed.
We’re can I find online dnd games I played awhile back in person and want to get back into it

How do features of the backgrounds work? As an example for charlatan i would have the feature false identity which allows me to steal an NPC identity (I'm not sure) would i need to roll for it or is the dm who decide if i can use it or not or does it depend in which feature exactly
You're referring to the outdated background RP features? As with all RP, it's up to the DM to decide where and when it's applicable.
-# Part of the reason they got rid of those features
the new origin features are a really nice mix of mechanics and narrative
This is the 2014 verison, so I wouldn't worry about it too much unless you're playing with 2014 rules. But as a general rule of thumb, the DM can determine when & where your background feats would be applicable, for rp oriented feats.

I had a question about being a dungeon master (something I’m considering trying)
So I am an author (unpublished as of yet) I write a series of stories in a fantasy medieval type world with an evil goddess and monsters she sends apon the kingdoms (I won’t get into the story bits I am not trying to advertise here) I was wondering would I be able to make my own homebrewed world for a campaign that takes place in this world I’ve spent years creating for a group to play in?
Sure, many DMs, myself included, have homebrew settings
Awesome thanks
The character that I'm making rolewise is ArtificerXwizard so i was thinking about multiclassing i believe it depends whether the dm allow it or not so i was wondering which one is simpler to play
It's a lot easier to get into a group if you have a good familiarity with the foundational rules of the game + how your character works. We strongly don't recommend homebrew for newbies since it sets poor expectations and habits for how the game is played.
To start I'd recommend reading through the first two chapters of the free Basic Rules linked in this channel's pins as well as #learn-to-play
i'd personally say that wizard is quite complicated for newer players but i don't know what the 2024 artificer looks like in comparison, it may be easier though
thanks, will read this evening, I came here mostly cause I'm in a campaign with some friends yet I don't like it cause the master is just doing some things that we players don't like, we tried subtly to tell him yet he doesn't understand, he's in the game as master and player and makes everyone way too op giving also way too many actions per turn to everyone.
Will read everything tonight and look for a campaign or one shot, thx, very kind of you.
Would you like to tell me more i don't really know about these new origin features
they're built into the 2024 backgrounds, there's a few included in the free rules if you want to look at them there https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-origins#BackgroundDescriptions
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/feats#MagicInitiate
No D&D is better than bad D&D. If you have issues with your DM it's often best to address them directly above the table. If you feel like your DM may be uncommunative or otherwise unpleasant in response to feedback there's no harm in making up some other excuse to leave the table
Thanks once again 🙇♂️

Hi
Welcome to the server!
iv gor a quic question
Fire away!
in the teorical case ive got a bar when i sent inspiracion do i need 100% obligartory to do invented stuff?
or can i sing or perfor a thing already made
Can I ask about class features? I’m new to the game and trying to create my first character. I picked Druid as a class but I’m not sure about the core Druid traits that I have to pick 2 of? Can someone maybe explain them please?
What choices are you looking at?
That's up to your table as there's no rules about it one way or another!
Animal handling, Arcana, insight, medicine, nature, perception, religion and survival
wait so i can start rapping eminem 🔥?
If your table is cool with it. If not, then maybe don't!
dang
also
can my bar jave weapons
I have never played dnd before... whats a way i could play it, ideally for free?
The rules will do the trick better than I would: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game#SkillList
Thank you
You just need the free rules (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024). Adventures, character sheets, and dice can be had for free online legally. And you need friends!
All classes have the ability to use weapons.
idk about that last one lol 😭 , but thank you
wait fr?
can i have at first lever a axe in the shape of a guitar? 🔥
So that we don't back-and-forth, if it's not covered by the rules (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024), it's up to the table.
Could you have such a weapon? At some tables, but not at any table. It just depends what the group agrees to.
and how can i find tables

Is it common for dm to not allow all races?
sure, it will depend on the setting they are running the campaign in
whether its common or not im unsure, but its definetely possible
Its relatively common to restrict options - but that said a good DM should explain why things are restricted.
E.g. no plasmoids, as they're from Spelljammer (which we're not doing) and very silly (which doesn't fit the tone). Or no centaurs, because I simply don't want to wrap my head around how a horse-person fits in the environments of this world.
woe upon me for liking plasmoid and reflavoring them to be more serious >.>
incredibly dumb when DMs do that based solely on official art when half the point of things is you're supposed to be able to reflavor things to your liking>.>
The first of many, I'm sure
I'm up to like 17 sets
I’m only getting one for now, just to play, then I hope later on I can get a set that has Arcane’s Hexcore patterns
Sometimes it might also be because they're not familiar with the mechanics, which is another reasonable approach.
But they’re really expensive
Does anyone have any advice for me? I'm new to D&D but I've done lots of research.
How easy is it too find a game in this sever?
Try having a read through the first couple of sections of the Free Rules to get a grasp of the terminology, then have a go at putting a character together for practice.
You'll need to pick a class, species and background. Let us know if you have any questions!
how do i go about actually playing/doing stuff related to d&d? because I’ve already made my character (beside the name lol) but im not sure what to do
no to find a group to play in. Check out the instructions in the bot thats about to drop to hopefully find a group

Hi guys I want to play dnd but I have no idea how to play
Read up on the first few chapters of the free basic rules on #learn-to-play , and feel free to ask any questions you might have. Then, make a practice character and get it reviewed in #character-discussion .
Ok thanks
So i was making my character and i found Myth Drannor to be good for my origin the thing is that i want to fact check my information
Myth Drannor has fallen to ruins in 1487 DR while the current dnd storyline is in 1501 DR right?
Are the new 2024 basic rules available as a downloadable pdf?
I can only find the old basic rules as a pdf
No but you can download the SRD 5.2 which has all the same info but oriented towards develoeprs making D&D compatible producst: https://www.dndbeyond.com/srd
Hey, I'm new to D&D. I have a character, but I'm weak on the rules. Tho would be cool to be a part of a team by the 25th. Anyone tryna help?
head on over to #find-a-game and follow the steps to look for games or post what you are looking for, or both lol!!!
I was wondering if anyone had any advice or segestions for seting up a DM screen? (its my first time as a dm)
Thx
Does it have all the basic rules to play?
It has all the core rules and mechanics, yes.
I think they should make a printable pdf version of the basic rules like the 2014 edition. It would be such a great asset for new players and players who want to try the game out
sup question, I’m about to finish making my first character. It’s a barbarian and for my weapons mastery I chose a maul and a greataxe but when I go to my equipment section on DND beyond I see my greataxe inventory but not my maul
should my maul be in there or do i have to add it manually?
yo me and my friend are looking to have somebody play with us and be dm or anything u want we're new playing so dm me or @candid flax if u wanna join
Look at this: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/rules-glossary
Copy the bits you might need to reference, like:
A section for the actions: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/rules-glossary#Action
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/rules-glossary#BreakingObjects
A section for the various conditions: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/rules-glossary#Condition
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/rules-glossary#ShortRest and maybe https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/rules-glossary#LongRest
Should be plenty. Skip the rest rules if you run short on space.
Yeah we need a mentor to try and teach us the ropes to the game, we have heard alot and it sounds very fun. Help would be very appreciated
think u can help me out bro 😭
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-classes#Barbarian
Starting equipment
Choose A or B: (A) Greataxe, 4 Handaxes, Explorer’s Pack, and 15 GP; or (B) 75 GP
A maul costs 10 GP, just so you know: https://www.dndbeyond.com/equipment/25-maul
If you want to build your own inventory from scratch, empty what you've got and look here for what you can spend that 75 GP budget on: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/equipment
Thanks! I made a character and read the rules a bit.
ohhh i understand thank you!

Hello! I’m new to D&D || and when I mean new I mean I’ve played the dumbed-down version our teacher/DM made us. I’ve on,y played in school ||
I’ve never played the official game (sadly) and I know a bit of character creation but weak on the rules of D&D. Is their a channel or something I could see to get a gist of what the actual D&D is abt?

I need help making sense of the character sheet
Hey for an high elf. When you create it.
It says “Keen senses: you have proficiency in the insight, perception or survival skill”
Do we need to pick one or we have all them all ?
I know a little bit but I have no idea what level means or most things mean
I could probably search it up but google doesn't care about how simple minded humans are
dos anyone know where to find a dm?

"Or" means you pick one of the three.

I checked that out and it said to go here for help on character creation
Question: I know that DMs often create boss fights for the party. How does the DM know if the entity they're creating is "balanced" and fair? Is there like some website or a program that tests different stuff to help decide what to balance? Or is it all "we have to see and hope."
I guess I should just go through the thing and ask what things are
i js wanna play some dnd😔
first of all, what is level, how do I determine what it should be, and how does it relate to class?
Your level is how strong your character is. You start at level 1. As you play DnD, your DM will give you various opportunities to advance. When you level up, you gain new abilities, based on which class you picked.
thx

now what is background
A background is a set of abilities and equipment which help describe your character's history before they became an adventurer. You can learn more about backgrounds and see the ones available for free here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-origins
im gonna be honest that website made no sense
Haha, what got you confused? The terminology?
It's a bit funny, because the current Basic Rules are laid out the most beginner friendly they ever have been. They're about 5x better laid out for the new player than the old version of the Basic Rules
its just it talked about things I don't see anywhere CLOSE to the background box on my sheet
and I have no idea what "feats" it was talking about
Pretty sure that means like the biggest thing you've done, like beating a bear with your bare hands
sorry not feats, I meant proficiencies
Feats are a list of abilities that your background (and some other things) can grant you. You'll note that the word "feats" is a link in that section. You can click that link to learn more about feats themselves.
Ah, sounds like you didn't read the earlier sections of the Basic Rules.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game#Proficiency
I'd recommend reading the Playing The Game section to learn the basics before moving on to later sections.
oh...
Yeah, it's gonna make it lot easier to figure things out reading things in order through the rules, rather than asking random things here and there 😛
I read the discord thing not the website one
to be fair, they hide the link to the rules in there, and it's the thing that is most imporant t oread
here's the link https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/
Read everything under 'Playing The Game' and 'Character Creation'
so correct me if im wrong on this, proficiencies pretty much alter based on your background and other things and as you level up it increases, yes?
it's explained in the link, but skills you are proficient in allow you to add a stat called your 'Proficiency Bonus' to your rolls made using them in addition to your regular stat that gets applied to those rolls, and yourProficiency Bonus increases at certain character levels, yes
all you had to do was read
so for background all I have to do is make up a short story and move on and worry about it later?
hi hi
That's a safe way to do it, yeah. You can hammer out the details with your DM later.
ALRIGHT!!!
Just keep it vague, low-power, and believable. No dragon slaying yet
I just said grew up in a circus and is an acrobat
alignment is like lawful neutral and stuff like that right?
what do I put for armor class, speed, and initiative?
do I start out with nothing and gain more or do I choose and that's what I get?
ac is 10 + dex mod + any armor (may be different depending on class)
speed is almost universally 30 feet
inititive is your dex modifier
your class and background detemine your starting equipment
it's determined by your class and ability modifiers
You'll have to determine your Ability Scores before you figure out your Saving Throws
Do you know which class you're playing yet?
rogue
A fun one!
proficiency in Dexterity and Intelligence saves then
so I need to do saving throws for armor class and for saving throws I need to do ability scores?
One sec. Gonna summon a huge bot post, but don't worry about most of it.
Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
easier to take the base starting equipment for your class for now
For a rogue that will be:
Starting Equipment: Leather Armor, 2 Daggers, Shortsword, Shortbow, 20 Arrows, Quiver, Thieves' Tools, Burglar's Pack, and 8 GP
A Burglar's Pack contains the following items: Backpack, Ball Bearings, Bell, 10 Candles, Crowbar, Hooded Lantern, 7 flasks of Oil, 5 days of Rations, Rope, Tinderbox, and Waterskin.
Your Saving Throws don't affect your AC at all.
But yes, your Ability Scores affect your Saving Throws.
what dex for a then?
Dex is one of your Ability Scores.
oh
As you can see by this bot post, there are three ways to generate your Ability Scores. We usually highly recommend the Standard Array method.
I think I'm starting to somewhat understand most of it
So, as described in the bot post, you'll take one of those six numbers and assign them to one if your abilities. That number will be your Ability Score.
ok
?tag new rogue
Rogue
Launch deadly Sneak Attacks while avoiding harm through stealth
Rogues rely on cunning, stealth, and their foes’ vulnerabilities to get the upper hand in any situation. They have a knack for finding the solution to just about any problem. A few even learn magical tricks to supplement their other abilities. Many Rogues focus on stealth and deception, while others refine skills that help them in a dungeon environment, such as climbing, finding and disarming traps, and opening locks.
-# Suggested Standard Array assignment
Str. 12
Dex. 15
Con. 13
Int. 14
Wis. 10
Cha. 8
Likes: Stealth
Complexity: Low
Starting HP: 8 + Con. modifier
This bot post describes one suggestion of appreciating those numbers for Rogue.
If you'd like, I can also suggest the Ability Score allocation that I'd recommend

what is constitution?
Vitality, health, and endurance pretty much
oh
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game#TheSixAbilities This might help to review
I made my saving throws
Have you allocated your Ability Scores yet?
no
Then I don't think you've done your Saving Throws quite right.
You need your Ability Scores to calculate your Saving Throws
where is that on the sheet?
Saving throws are a derived stat, they are calculated off your ability scores
It'll be a box under each Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, etc
the acrobatics, animal handling, etc?
also derrived off of your ability score/modifiers
I went to an anime convention this afternoon and got an adorable dice bag it’s a gelatinous cube. Also got 5 sets of dice in a mystery grab bag for $30
ooooh
I like this nice yellow set that has a dragon instead of the 20 on the d20
so I thought that saving throws was that
hello everyone!
It's hard to answer exactly where the box is, since I can't see what your sheet looks like. But it'll probably be six equally sized big boxes near the top of your page.
I found it but I need to figure out what numbers to put in?
You'll put one of each of the six numbers listed under Standard Array in each of those boxes. I can offer a recommendation of which numbers to put where, if you'd like.
oh, I thought those numbers were for saving throw
dexterity is like flexibility, right?
Nope, those were for your Ability Scores. You can't finish your Saving Throws until you've finished your Ability Scores.
That's one thing it's used for. It's also used for fast reflexes, ranged weapons, and weapons that require skill to use (called Finesse weapons).
I’d correct the “require skill” to “require nimbleness”.
Cuz all the weapons require proficiency
That's fair. I was second guessing my own word choice as well
yeah
thx
what would be my saving throws if I have: 10 strength, 15 dexterity, 12 constitution, 14 intelligence, 8 wisdom, and 13 charisma?
is somebody in here good at explaining the dnd 5e character sheet? cause ngl I don´t fully get the tutorials on youtube 😅
Somewhat
What class?
like how the combat system works etc.?
Oki
Well, first would be to determine your Ability Score Modifiers for each of these. Thankfully, there's a table.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game#AbilityModifiers
combat system from my understanding is just: pick move, roll, add number to roll, attack
That's not quite right, but you're in the right ballpark
So: everyone rolls initiative
That determines the order
Everyone then gets an action and a bonus action to use.
They also get a reaction that can be used for specific things.
Everyone takes their turns until combat is over
I don't really know what that sentence means.
There are two primary things for dealing damage or resisting/applying effects:
attack rolls, where you roll a d20 + modifiers to meet or beat an AC (Armor class)
Applying saving throws, where the opponent must roll a d20 + modifiers to beat a DC (difficulty class) to resist an effect
That’s specifically just an attack action using an attack roll
Does that make sense?
how do I calculate my saving throws?
Btw these aren’t your final stats. You still need to add your ability score improvements
Either from your background or species depending on the ruleset
those are my ability scores
Oh?
I need help applying them to saving throw
how much damage do I deal?
If you say so.
+0 strength
+4 Dex
+1 con
- 4 intelligence
-1 wisdom
+1 charisma
That would depend on what sort of attack you do
is that bad?
It’s usable
a swing with a sword as a tiefling fighter for example
what sword?
What’s your strength modifier?
And what sword?
dunno what sword
I have nothing in front of me rn
The weapon or spell (or effect) determines the damage dice rolled
and how do I know hoch much hp my opponent has?
Longsword (1d10 + strength modifier with both hands, 1d8 + str mod otherwise), rapier (1d8+str mod), shortsword, scimitar, (both are 1d6+ Str or Dex mod) great sword (2d6 + Str)
You don’t, usually.
but how do I know how much hp I subtract from them with my attack then?
you get a vague idea ususally
your DM should tell you once they're at half health
what about my skills?
You roll a damage dice and add your modifier
The Dungeon Master worries about that.
So for one successful attack you roll twice:
one to hit, one for damage
Choose 4: Acrobatics, Athletics, Deception, Insight, Intimidation, Investigation, Perception, Persuasion, Sleight of Hand, or Stealth
Then choose the two from your background
Assuming 2024 rules
and how does the DM usually estimate that? I´m asking cause I might want to become a DM myself one day to teach my friends
They’ll know how much HP an enemy has base off its stat block, then deduct the damage dealt to the number
do you find those blocks in the handbook?
The monster statblock provides an average HP total or a hit dice calculation that the DM can use to roll and set the creatures HP total.
If I recall, most are in the monster manual
so are those the skills I choose for my character to have or are those the ones I choose for my character to be good at?
Both
Unless im misunderstanding
Example monster statblock for Spider from the free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creature-stat-blocks#Spider
You get to add a bonus to rolls involving things you’re proficient in
On top of your ability modifier
do I just put like a check mark on those or do I put a number?
Both
what number?
Your skills are based on your ability modifier, and anything you “check mark” will have extra. +2 on top of the original number if you’re level 1.
Depends on the skill
Acrobatics would use dexterity modifier, while perception would use wisdom modifier
Depends
and the DM rolls the dice to estimate how much damage my opponent deals to me every turn, right?
Yup! And it’s not an estimate
It’s an exact number
and the weapons I start out with and their values are in the handbook?
Yup!
Actually they’re in the free basic rules
But yes I think they’re also in the handbook
ok good, I think I´m slowly beginning to see the bigger picture here. Cause I wanna gain enough knowledge to prevent me from being completely oblivious during my first campaign, so that the DM won´t become too frustrated with me
so I somewhat understand but do I put the number that my ability modifier is or something else?
Your ability modifier
And then add your proficiency bonus to that modifier if you’re proficient
It's based on your character level - check your class table and it shows you your proficiency bonus at what level.
class table?
At level 1 you have a +2 proficiency bonus.
DND is just a series of rabbit holes, you solve one question and another pops up
so its the same number plus 2?
For example here's the Barbarian class's table from the free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-classes#BarbarianFeatures
See the column called Proficiency Bonus and how it tracks to the Character Level column?
thx
how do you level up again?
you get oppertunities from the dm
Simply put, do enough things in your campaign and your DM will tell you that you've done enough to level up.
There's different ways to track just how much is needed to level up, but that's all in the DM's hands
and will he also tell me what numbers I have to change on my character sheet as a result?
so for the skill I choose I just do the same number as my ability and add my level bonus?
how does it work then? there has to be a system for me to know if I´m supposed to know that
Once you are approved to level up, if you are taking another level in your existing class, reference your class table and class features and add those features to your sheet.
Welcome
hi
You’ll add more abilities based on your class, your hp will increase by 1 dice determined by your class( called a hit die) + constitution modifier, and you’ll not your level on your sheet
So using the barbarian class table again, if I were leveling up my level 1 barbarian to level 2, I'd look at my class table and note any new features I get and add them to my sheet.
And your proficiency modifier might increase
Hi new here, I’m Nugget. How may we help you?
You would also upgrade your Hit Points Total and add another Hit Die
Hahahah I guess I walked into that one
Well I’ve been looking around my area and talking to a bunch of people I know that play and trying to get into DnD for first time ever with my wife as well.
I just want to know if there is a number that I need to calculate then add the level thing or if I just take the ability number and add the level thing
That’s nice! It recommend reading at least to the end of chapter two (Character Creation) of the free basic rules. And feel free to ask any questions!
Free basic D&D rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
Ability modifier and add the proficient bonus
okay
So the latter
I've been overthinking it
A local games store or a library might be able to help you find a group. Or you could try to find friends or family to make a group!
I checked like the big local game store but no luck even tried researching online for a local thing. Did turn out my wife sister plays so I’ll see where that goes.
What’s your level?
1
9
This is the part I dread character creation lol
thx
How good are you with absorbing information you read?
I can read lol tbh I’m more of a visual learner but I can retain information
Then you’ll be fine
Basically retaining information is my job 🤣
what is inspiration?
Read these rules, then read https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character
Smt a DM can give out. You get a free reroll and can choose the higher value for a d20 test (called Advantage)
so don't worry about it until I play?
Yup
Hello!!!
How's everything going for you guys?
what about personality traits, ideals, bonds, and flaws?
That’s up to you. Write what seems fitting
so self explanitory
Mhm
I’m alive!
Glad to hear!
tbh I forget what ideals means
Quick question guys! What's a good way of learning how to play? It's there any videogame that I can play to learn the table game?

Absolutely Flav
Oh thank you ! 🙂
would it make sense for a character to mostly only care about money but not be greedy?
Ye
thx
my character is complicated
they are a mercenary who pretty much never WANTS to lose
Hello
Gooood morning afternoon evening, Wahzzup!
Wsp
Hellooo
what do I put for passive wisdom (perception)
What’s your perception modifier?
Hello!
10
I have only played a few campaigns that ended up falling out and I wish to be a DM one day. Do you guys recommend I get more experience before trying to look into DMing?
hey guys!
do halflings have their own language or just common tongue?
Whazzzzup
It's not necessary, but more experience certainly helps.
wuzzuppppp
Common is the default language of most Halfling societies, I believe
im curious because I have a halflings character and want to know what languages would make sense
Your DM would be the best person to ask about that

You can find the rules here https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
Welcome! The best place to start is with the free Basic Rules, linked in the bot post above. As you're giving them a read, we'll be happy to answer any specific questions you have here in this chat.
what equipment does rogue class start with?
Choose A or B: (A) Leather Armor, 2 Daggers, Shortsword, Shortbow, 20 Arrows, Quiver, Thieves’ Tools, Burglar’s Pack, and 8 GP; or (B) 100 GP
:D
thx
For future reference, it says right in the Rogue class description in the Basic Rules

Many Rogues focus on stealth and deception, while others refine skills that help them in a dungeon environment, such as climbing, finding and disarming traps, and opening locks.

what do I put for attacks and spellcasting?
hi
what are you using to create a character? is this your first character?
Hello there, is there anyone who speaks Spanish who can introduce me to the world of D&D? Or who knows of a Spanish-speaking server that might be useful?
There’s nothing in the rules that state that someone can’t advertise a Spanish speaking server on #looking-for-community , so maybe look around there
my bad I just checked the rules and it said please send all messages in english
I just want to finish my character
I understand the rules I just need to know how to make characters
There is some tools on dnd beyond that help you make characters quicker
Search up dnd beyond
Okay, thanks
Good luck!
2 problems with using the tools
1: I am using the blank pdf since I dont want to make an account
2: I want to write it by hand
You can certainly do that, I personally used this for my first character then wrote down the info
I think I can do everything except for the attack section now
can you help with the attack section of a level 1 halfling rogue
with 2 daggers, a short sword, and a short bow for the attacks
I believe you can look these up without an account if that helps https://www.dndbeyond.com/equipment/3-dagger
Is the 2024 dnd 5e player‘s handbook a must? I really don‘t like the illustrations compared to the 2014 one
Or does it consist of THE new rules of the game?
just put the name, range, hit, damage, damage type, and notes
There are some substantial changes. For example, Lay on Hands goes from an action to a bonus action. Though you can just look up the 2024 rules for particular things and keep the 2014 version on the bookshelf if you'd like.
If your eventual group is using 2024 rules, you'd want that one over 2014.
If not, you'd want the opposite
it shows information about the dagger but not the attacks name
What do you mean?
Are there many changes? Like is even the character creation different now?
Enough to matter, yes
Since there's differences in languages, backgrounds and how the stat bonuses work
But as I said, if you find a group still using 2014 rules, that's the book you'll want
Not everyone has switched
That really sucks cause I gotta learn two different games now
should I just ask the dm for help with the attacks?
it would be "dagger"
just the attacks name is "dagger"?
its not the name of the attack its the name of the thing ur attacking with
oh
If you like 2014 better, you could just learn 2014 rules and look for groups still playing it
You only need to care about 2024 rules if you intend to play 2024
Just learn one is my tip.
But if you want to play 2024, you will need that book/rules even if you don't like the art
If you need to learn another, learn that slowly, but have decent knowledge in one
I don‘t know which one to play
Which one to learn
Isn‘t the 2024 one the norm now?
its js the most recent
It's probably more common, especially for newer players since it's the updated version
But if you hate the art of the 2024 PHB enough for it to be a deal breaker, it's not the only option
I really really do. I don‘t even want to have them in the same room as me 😅
Then learning and playing 2014 rules is still an option
You just have to find a group that's still using those rules
how do I know the atk bonus?
Look up the player handbook and download a PDF. Im pretty sure it will tell you anything you want to know
But 2024 is more common now?
Since it‘s more recent?
2014 is still plenty popular contrary to what this server's stance is, you'll be fine
Probably. We don't have exact numbers
This is the official server, so it leans toward the new stuff
what dont you like abt it?
but are they that different?
The rules are different enough to matter
Off putting, I really hate them
Yeah 2014 is still quite prominent.
I just recommend 2024 cuz that’s where all the new content is going, plus you can still use 2014 subclasses and optional rules.
And the art is different because well, it's entirely separate art
oh...
Has the character creation changed?
It's based on the modifier of the stat you're using to attack with and your proficiency bonus
Have you read the basic rules?
but when you play, they tell you which version is it?
Like the character sheets etc.
DMs would at least
Yes. As I said above, there are differences in how languages, backgrounds and stat bonuses work at minimum.
Plus the species, classes and other features got a fair amount of updates
There is a different style of character sheet too, but imo that matters less
Or you can ask ahead of time that works too
You should probably pick one to focus on, and if you hate the 2024 PHB that much, you'd likely be happier with 2014
You wouldn't be able to play 2024 games, but 2014 games do still exist
so I searched up handbook PDFs and found nothing about atk bonus
Its ability modifier + proficiency bonus
oh
Assuming you’re proficient with the weapon
proficiency bonus is plus 2 for level 1 right?
i belive so but you would have to be proficient with your weapon
hi. So I'm not really sure where to ask this, and I am a beginnr so. I actually wanted to find a server I could find D&D campaigns on. Preferably text based but voice based would be good too and isn't problematic.
does that exist or happen here?
it does
im not expierienced with rouges but youre profiecent with the weapons and armor and stuff in the profiecency area on your sheet
ok
thanks
Yeah, games aren't run on this server, but that's where people post if they want players
how many proficiencies can a character have?
under features and traits?
I'm not sure exactly what you're looking at, tbh. The class information will tell you all your starting proficiencies
Some of them may be categories, such as 'simple weapons', which includes every weapon in that category
Ninja is filling out their character sheet PDF by hand.
That's fine. I'm just not sure what they meant by Features and Traits
There's a Features and Traits section on the old style character sheet
That's what I assume they're referring to
Ninja can we see what you have so far?
That box is just where you can write down things that your class/subclass gives you
But depending on the type of proficiency, it may be marked under saves, skills, or the attacks themselves
You need to look at the class information to know what you have and then put it in the appropriate section of the sheet
I do want to show you all what I have so far but I don't know how to send a pdf
copy and paste the link maybe?
is being a monk fun
all the classes are fun to different people, if monk speaks to you then you should play it!
Hey guys I’m new but I wanna play how do I do that

we just created a new group chat
How do I join it
hey yall!
Btw, where am i supposed to get the material components for certain spells? For example, Hex. Where am i gonna find the petrified eye of a newt?
I'm new to dnd it wouldn't let me pick new to dnd and the one i have on me also
Who wanna join my dnd pary
Party*
please check out #find-a-game for the direction on using our LF channels and #looking-for-players to find a DM.
we don't allow group formation outside those channels
Most folk use a component pouch, or skip it entirely with a spellcasting focus like a wand or holy symbol.
I usually dont require any components for spells unless if they have a written GP cost.
Then those will require that
If you've neither of those, find an alchemist. Failing that, a pond.
Are most newcomers here looking to become players or DMs?
Usually players from my experience
Around 1 in 20 asking for advice wanna be a DM. Probably between 5-10% if I were to give an approximation

?dmtips
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
Hi all, I want to create a fairy character on dndbeyond.
I'm part of a campaign where the DM has shared
Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse but this character will be in a different DM's campaign.
Do I have to buy the book to be able to use it in a different campaign? The app doesn't give me an option to buy, just download, so I'm not sure what to do.
You will be able to yeah. How it works is that all content that you have already on your sheet will still be on it if you move the character somewhere else.
You just won't have access to add anything new from that book if you're no longer in a share campaign.
So I'd need to create the character in the campaign of the DM who has shared the book then leave the campaign and join it to the new one?
yep!
Great thanks
So how do I play

Is there certain requirements for characters
There are rules on how to create characters in the rules, if that's what you mean.
Okie ty
Here's a step by step:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/phb-2024/creating-a-character#CreateYourCharacter
As a sidenote, often the Dungeon Master of a game will say if there are any special rules for character creation, and what options are available. Making a character as practice is still a good idea though!
You can either do it the old fashioned way on an empty character sheet:
https://media.dndbeyond.com/compendium-images/br/ph/character-sheet.pdf
Or you can make use of digital tools by using the character builder on ddbeyond:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/builder
do you make an character for the campaign or do you have the character forever?
Usually the former
Yeah that's what I thought about how it worked
I usually make a new one for every game I join, yeah.
Not just because every game usually has their own little quirks and rules for creating characters, but also because there is no expectation that you could somehow transfer the story of a character from one game to the next.
can I equip more than 2 weapons cause there is 6 slots or only what I can hold
DDbeyond lets you "equip" however many weapons you want to be displayed in the actions tab of your sheet. This does not change that your character can only hold as many weapons as they have hands.
hey. i m a newcomer... i want to learn how to play D&D for ages... but being a doctor does not let much time... do you think buying these books is a plus? https://dndstore.wizards.com/eu/product/1018427/2024-digital-physical-core-rulebook-bundle
To just learn the game, you could actually just start with the free rules, which include the basics:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
If you do want to purchase something, the Player's Handbook ist the important one. The Dungeon Masters Guide and the Monster Manual provide additional DM tools.
thank you

what do I put under features and traits?
How can i run combat? Im running a game with some friends online, but i read that roll20 only supports sharing maps with up to 5 people (+DM), but we are more than that. Is there another site i can use?
You could use Owlbear Rodeo. I'm not aware that there is a group size limit there.
I am stuck on 2 things on character creation using 5e which are I need to know what to put under features and traits and I need to know what atk bonus I put in the attacks and spellcasting section
can someone help me?
Sure. So you're looking at this sheet I assume?
https://media.dndbeyond.com/compendium-images/marketing/dnd_5e_charactersheet_formfillable.pdf
yes
What class did you pick? I ask so I can give an example.
I choose a rogue
Is it 2014 or 2024 5e?
Okay perfect, so one of the rogues class features is Sneak Attack. You'd put "Sneak Attack" into the Features and Traits section, together with all the other such features.
ok thank you
tbh i may have completely messed up during their character creation sincei didnt mention what ruleset we were gonna use, so i have absolutely 0 idea what we are gonna be running and if someone was planning to use someting that may not be allowed with the other rules
so uh
a mix i guess?
prob 5e?
For the attacks section, you first figure out what weapon you will use. Lets take the daggers as an example. Then you figure out what the bonus is. As a rogue you are proficient with daggers, so you get to add your proficiency bonus to the attack roll, together with the ability modifier used for the attack.
Attack bonus = Ability modifier + Proficiency bonus
For daggers, the ability modifier you're likely want to be using is going to be Dexterity.
Both are 5e, 2024 has just been a revised/"updated" version of that
oh ok
ability modifier is the same number as saving throw right?
Kind of, but not quite. Both the attack bonus and the saving throw bonus incorporate your ability modifier though.
You guys have an experienced DM by any chance? @dense sparrow and I are still looking for a "teacher", but the games offered in the finding games channel are a bit too advanced for newbies like us
are you looking for DM to lead a game for u or just answer questions?
is the ability modifier just what I put under strength in ability?
i am the dm and its literrally my first game-
half of us are new to this and we are just kinda going with it
Honestly both. We need to learn the game and I was told that part of it is playing in the first place
This isn't really the channel for group building. The #find-a-game channels are made for that purpose.
beat me to it Deva lol
Yeah I provided the reason why I was asking in here above
Trying to create a fairy Rapier as a homebrew item as I need to change it from 1D8 to 1D6... how do I do this on dndbeyond please?
#ddb-support should have the details you need, the people there are knowledgeable on the DDB homebrew tools
Thanks
is the ability modifier just the number I put under the abilities?
or is it changed
They derive directly from the ability scores, yeah. Like so:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character#AbilityScoresandModifiers
People actually either put the ability score above and the modifier below and vice versa, it's up to you.
ok thank you
is there a change between the different attacks and if so how do I find the change?
How do you mean different attacks. Do you mean, for example, the difference between a shortbow and a dagger?
Alright, that's fairly straightforward: for ranged attacks, use dexterity, for melee attacks, use strength.
See here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game#AttackRollAbilities
For some weapons you can use either, because they have the finesse property (dagger is one of those).
so for dagger I choose?
yep!
now while I do features and traits can you tell me how to calculate the armor class, initiative, and speed?
