Yeah, you could be gargantuan and you’d still need two hands by Rules As Written
Gotcha then thank you for the clarification
Realisticly could DND be played with just 2 players and a DM or is it better to see if I can go find more
It would be better, but it’s doable. Not recommended tbh, but possible.
yeah it's more fun in a group though
Yes you can, although most would recommend having more players
but if you wanna try single or double play then you would have to use random dice rolls for most decisions
Alright, cool👍
There is a manual for solo play
Question or food for thought since rules don't really specify how magic is done (like doesnt state it has to be done from your hands) if my character has a tail couldn't I technically use the tail as an extension of my body to cast certain magic spells or cantrips?
It does specify you need romantic components, but yes that’s doable. Flavour is free
You could yes, althoug it would depend on your DM if they allowed it.
I don't see why not as long as the DM allowed it, but wouldn't that mean if the tail got cut off you couldn't do magic anymore?
At the same time if it's doable I could also use a tail to swing a weapon around correct? If I use the tail as and extra appendage I can control or would that also fall under homebrew
Could still use magic just hands are no longer free of use as they would have to cast magic
Not mechanically no
I wouldn't say so no
That would be homebrew
No, that would require homebrew
But realistically, can't you just do whatever you want as long as the DM agrees with it?
Hi gyys
Im new to dnd starting a game with my friends on welcome to hellfire any tips
Don't be afraid to make mistakes
Just have fun, if it goes wrong who careess. As long as it's friends having fun its the whole point
We're looking to start a new party campaign next week, and there is only 3 of us for the party. I've only played cleric, so I was thinking of researching either a fighter or a rogue type character. Cleric was fun, but all of the spells and those choices got a bit overwhelming while I was trying to learn. Depending on composition from the other two guys, I was thinking maybe monk, ranger, or paladin if we need some sort of a healer and I'm stuck. Or, would anyone recommend another class that isn't spell focused, but would be beneficial to the party? Last time we had a rogue and fighter, so I was thinking something different from those.
Monk! Mercy monk for damage and healing too maybe
oh interesting!
Monks are also my favourite, so that is biased, but eh. Monk supremacy
Mercy monks are not standard dnd material. They're found in Tasha's which is still official, just not in the players handbook
They’re 2024 PHB
wait what they are? I haven't read it in forever
Yup!
omg yeah they are! I kinda wanna play 2024 just for that tbh
2024 monks are also very nice
Hi people i was curious, are some of you currently playing in campaigns while not being native english speaker ? And if so is it any hard to you ?
Generally your species will give you specific features and traits based on what you pick. That said, a DM could easily say you using your tail to attack something could be ruled as an unarmed strike, and from that the normal rules would apply.
I am esl, its harder (especially if very extroverted other players like my table) but its very possible. What level of english do you have?
I'm bilingual but ive never had the chance to speak with a group for a few hours (i mean speak a lot not just throwing around infos for a game we're playing)
I have a tiefling paladin that ive created and a dragonborn monk as well I've use the dragon born monk in that style of using my tail as an unarmed strike or a "tail slap" to knock them back
Have you looked at the #looking-for-dm and #looking-for-players channels? If not, read #find-a-game , and look around on dnd beyond forums, reddit and roll20
It very much depends, A LOT of people are into the role playing side you just have to find the right group
hi!! i've been wanting to play dnd for a while now (ty stranger things) and got the dragons of storm wreck isle starter set for christmas, anyone have tips/suggestions for my first time playing? i've gotten a couple of friends who are interested in playing with me i just am a little overwhelmed with the sheer volume of info and stuff haha
Take your time! Are you planning on DM’ing?
yes i think so
OOooo thats an awesome campain, DM or player?
Noice noice (and ambitious)
Welp, someones gotta do it😂
In most tables if you don't have the fluency to portray the intellect/wisdom/charisma that your character has, you can format it where your character does it instead. You don't need to physically swing a sword around to attack so why have the same standard for speaking? Instead of having your conversation with a character, say instead 'I'll have a conversation with this character, getting to know them so I can infiltrate their base later with that knowledge' or something like that. Also def don't feel a pressure to do a voice. That was really difficult for me so don't feel a pressure to. You can do an interesting voice without an accent. Like saying 'right?' after everything or something. Also get to know the rules well. You can really convey your character really well if you know the intricacies of your characters abilities/rules of game.
my friends were like ....you're the one who got the set, crowning you as DM
I recommend taking it at your own pace and absorbing the information you need slowly. And ask questions here for rules or DM’ing advice.
ty!!
To be fair, if they want you to be DM I would take that as quite the honor
Their trusting you with the story
No pressure😉
Best of luck!
Just remember to work with your party, not against them!
@green heart Just remember, the rules are sort of loose guidelines
The best way of putting it I think is that it is the players story just as much as it is the DMs
this is all helpful! so excited ty guys!!
Those advices are much appreciated, it would feel less stressful to describe a convo instead of having that conversation for sure, i know some of the rules and bits but those were in my language so i would have to transpose those if i even want to try starting a campaign in here
Its good to before a full session to be versed in the 'language of dnd'. Just knowing the terms like skill check, advantage, 4d6 are thrown around so good to have the basics covered. If they are nice people they will also help you along the way
Am i being unreasonable looking for a standard dnd game? it seems like everyone does homebrew everywhere I look but i would really like just regular dnd for my first game, do i just have to cave and play a homebrew campaign?
Indeed i should try to find a group that is welcoming to newcomers or "returning people", that would be good to facilitate the session(s)
i've found that too. though to be honest, no matter what there will be some deviation from what is written RAW in the rules, even if a pre-written official adventure is used.
I can def sympathise, I love homebrew and everyone has their own opinions on how to improve dnd so that seems to be common. But most times games have very minimal homebrew. Maybe we're both unlucky in our own ways lol but most times games I've been in have like 'crunchy crits' and thats it. With searching you can find a game that suits you
Hey all, fairly new back into dnd. Played a long time ago but nothing really online. Hows is everyone!
I'm really good. In a couple of weeks I'll be looking for a new game to play with my boyfriend who hasn't played before. Exciting stuff
I JUST GOT HERE
i got a new hero quest for christmas and its ramped me up to find a new group and get into this online i suppose 😛
ohh never heard of heroquest before, looked it up. Looks interesting! Are the rules in any way adaptable to dnd or do you have to start from scratch rule-wise?
For christmas I got a starter pack with basic dungeon crawls and adventure packs. I wanna get into lego dnd in specific, but since I don't really have any models, I think I'mma be using my plastic army men collection, ESPECIALLY since I have plastic army men zombies, mummies, pirates, and skeleton warriors.
the big lego dnd set is really prettyy but legos are so expensivee... Good compromise imo sounds promising
@brazen nacelle similar in a way to crawling dungeons and serching mechanics and dice roll battles, but quests are kind of preset with no real improvisation like DnD. Thats what im after really. Hero quest definately worth a go though!
Thx! Only thing is- Idk how to guns work in dnd, since I haven't really seen them being used. I even took a rifleman aiming down sights green plastic army guy, and cut off his helmet and gave him longer hair, and elongated his coat with green stuff for my own personal playable character.
I've been able to find great tables within this server's 'find a dm/players' thing. Have to be patient to find great ones but I would still creating a posting on 'finding a dm' if you don't have a group ready
I have a full gunslinger class homebrew (by heavyarms, its amazing) that has its own gun rules so I don't fully remember but guns are definitely in base dnd. Iirc they deal force damage and only artificers base class have proficiency. But you can alter the rules to be whatever you want and change bows/crossbows into guns as well
I'm just so curious when it comes to ammo conservation, do you have limited magazines/clips? DO GUNS JAM!? Can I loot ammo off of my fallen enemies??
hi guys i am new here so how does this work exactly i have just finished stranger things the serie and it had cool way of showing D&D
Read up on the first few chapters of the free basic rules on #learn-to-play , and feel free to ask any questions you might have. Then, make a practice character and get it reviewed in #character-discussion .
Once you’re ready and got the fundamentals down, you can check out #find-a-game for information on how to find a group online. To make a post, type the appropriate command in any chat channel.
crossbows do have a loading feature where they do need to be loaded to fire. All the rest is up to you to balance between making sense and being fun
Guns in dnd are just weapons, actually.
Hi!
Loading weapons with short and far ranges
Pretty much just a crossbow that hits harder, has varying levels of range between firearms and cost 539368x more
oh thank dude so do people do games online often
oh that's cool so can i find a game tomorrow
you'd have to look through. this discord doesn't organize the games, its just a place to post them
If you get very lucky, maybe. It does usually take longer than that though
what do yo mean look through 😅
whoops, i forgot to mention you need to look in #find-a-game
Probably not
nahh all good
getting into a D&D game is a lot like applying for a job. you see a posting, you reply to it, there's talk back and forth, possibly some type of vetting process, there are agreements and scheduling.
People have to compare schedules and stuff
if there were a drop-in-drop-out system like many MMOs or online games, it would be complete anarchy.
oh cool then i will do that
If a create a dragonborn could I make them have certain features that match that of dinosaurs since through certain lore they were classified as under dragons
As I always say (and might have accidentally stolen from someone else), Flavour is Free. You can create your character to look like anything, within reason of course
Well I always thought for dnd that the more fun you have the better that's why the rulebooks should be classified as more like guidelines but I just wanted to make sure so I don't upset certain people cuz I know everyone has a difference in how things should look and or play out.
Flavor and mechanics are different. The rules are the baseline expectation, some like more deviation than others
You have to be a tiny bit careful as to not have features that would actively help you that the base doesn't have. You cannot say "well since I have dinosaur-esque skin, I should have resistance to physical damage". Keep the rules the same but otherwise have fun
Flavor is the lightest form of homebrew. Still get DM approval, but I’m sure a cosmetic change to something that already shares a lot of similar features with Dragonborn should be ok
No I was thinking more like ceratopsian head but again the horn and everything are all flavor and don't do anything
Cosmetic is cosmetic i would never have any cosmetic do anything that would help me out lol. Tails on the other hand I do see it both ways though like I get it it's a flavor but at the same time I could see a usage for it as it's been played out through various comics, mangas and anime
Like if someone wanted to essentially create sun wukong a being known for their usage of trickery, mischief and his tail the rules state no you cant do that
Theres like Hadozees that have a prehensile tails but otherwise having a tail is or not is not going to be a huge advantage either way. Thats why dragonborns and tieflings can have both options without it affecting the statblock
As a DM I would have no problem with a character having a different shaped head and a tail. To me that does not interfere with anything that a 'normal' dragonborn can achieve nor does it allow an unfair advantage either
I'm just a very imaginative person when it comes to full on rpg like anything that can be done I'd like to think of and possibly do if my fate in the dice rolls are right
Absolutely and thats a great thing to have. Some DM's would be stricter with these type of things but most tables I've been to love that type of adaptation of concepts
yo uh can i ask, how do i make a backstory and is it important? when i first played, my dm just said "yeha jus give your dude lore" but in the players handbook it says things like feats and roles and whatnot
3 bullet points:
- where in your DM's game setting did you come from?
- what did you do before becoming an adventurer? (should align with your character background)
- what got you into the dangerous world of adventuring? (should align with the game setting - also not a good idea say you're some god with this all powerful weapon that has forgotten everything unless that's the kind of D&D game you're playing)
Hello Im new to DND, got no experience but looking forward for it. How can I find people to play with ?

Hey so I am new to D&D with no experience but wanna get into it but I have a really hard time understanding it without getting confused. What would be the best way to begin?
Here are some options. Pick one (or multiple, if you like)!
- You could watch some games played on YouTube or Twitch just to see what it's like in action. (Podcasts also work for this purpose.) Don't expect your home game to look like a professional production, though!
- Or play the demo.
- Or read #learn-to-play.
- Or you could read through the Free Rules.
- Or you could watch the Handbooker Helper videos (or WASD20's Rules School) on YouTube. Caveat: the videos are for the 2014 rules. The fundamentals are pretty much the same between 2014 and 2024 rulesets, though.
- Or you could sign up for a learn-to-play session through the virtual weekends linked in the server's Events channel.
- Or you can do any/all of these in increments. Read one rules chapter. Watch one explainer video.
there is an intro experience on the dnd website
and a lot more info in #learn-to-play
Idk how to guns work in dnd, since I haven't really seen them being used.
They're just ranged weapons. They do a bit more damage than bows but have lower ranges in general (seems to be a balance thing). Simple as.
My party rn consists of: shepherd druid, devotion paladin, enchantment and chronurgy/evocation wizards (it's me, but my party isn't sure if they can find the Chronurgist source material) and bard (subclass unconfirmed). Is my party unbalanced?
(We haven't started)
Also, we kind of... made our characters before we found a DM... we kind of... need a DM?
Sounds fine, you've presumably got a frontline from a paladin and possibly the druid's summons, while the wizards and bard can basically lean into doing whatever, but also D&D isn't like an rpg game where you need to worry much about balance, and just playing a character you want to play 😎
As for finding a DM, you could check out #find-a-game for instructions on the server's lfg channels, or look through other online place to find games, like reddit, StatPlaying or roll20's game list, depending on where you wish to play
New to D&D looking at getting into it any recommendations on YouTube guides for absolute beginner?
How do you use EP and PP like is it campaign dependent or something else
Visit #learn-to-play for everything you need to get started!

EP and PP are form of coin (I think it was you are referring to) So 10 Copper Pieces (CP) = 1 Silver Piece (SP), 10 SP = 1 Gold Piece (GP), 10 GP = 1 Platinum Piece (PP). the MUCH LESS used Electrum Piece (EP) is the same as 5 GP. Think Dollar Bill, 10 Dollar Bill, 100 Dollar Bill, 500 Dollar Bill, 1000 Dollar Bill (american based money) @mellow folio
Ok thanks also how do you spend them my dm wont let me just use them like GP SP or CP
I am not sure why they would'nt let you use them if they gave them to you. If something cost 5 GP you should be allowed to spend one EP and if something cost 10 GP you should be allowed to spend 1 PP. You'll have to ask why they gave them to you if you can't use them
Ok thanks I will
is making a dnd character supposed to take hours? i've been working for a while and i feel nowhere close to done. then again, i have to start at a level 3 character
I really like Ginny Di's videos for beginners. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hNNBjVmNbQI&list=PLsmjZYZs1ps05jkN5u6yJ9j6G_8JLut6Z
If you have never done it starting at level 3 will require some time as there are more choices to make. Are you using the free rules? That narrows options down a bit as the full options are only available if you own the Players Handbook.
it depends on how in depth you want to be with your character and what your DM expects. If you are brand new to it, I would ask your DM to help get you on focus. Once you narrow down a few basics, you can move much quicker. if you are reading everything about everything it will be very time consuming.
If you have any specific questions we’re also happy to help clear up stuff :)
howdy
Read up on the first few chapters of the free basic rules on #learn-to-play , and feel free to ask any questions you might have. Then, make a practice character and get it reviewed in #character-discussion .

That’s assuming you want to play online, of course
Yes
Well damn you got me there
I ain’t gonna deny it, it’s a fair bit of reading
Is the learn to play still good read if you are going to learn in real life
Yup!
The rules are the same
Welp uhhh I finna get my reading glasses or some crap
I hate reading when it isn’t English
The only thing that really changes between irl and online D&D is the tools used.
You might use a virtual tabletop application when playing online (e.g. roll20), but have a physical tabletop to play on irl, as an example
Thankfully the server, D&DBeyond, and the Basic Rules are all English by default. 😅
If you have another preferred language, the Basic Rules are available in other languages here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/srd
"I'm not gonna sugarcoat it"
No. I’m Nugget. Who’s not gonna sugarcoat it?
Hello
Hello!
Hiii
Hello everybody
Hallo!
Here? I’m not sure…
Maybe #dnd-advertisements if it’s dnd related?
Ok
Hello!
Goood morning afternoon evening!
you forgot "goodnight"
I am ready @echo kelp mind telling me how to create one of those that is searching players
#find-a-game has the information and instructions
But basically start typing here /looking-for then select from either dm (you are looking for a DM), players (you are looking for players for a game), community (you are advertising your D&D community server), or paid (you're offering paid D&D games)
The bot will give you a form to fill out
After submitting the form, the bot creates the post in the appropriate channel and attaches a thread to it.
Use the thread to make any corrections, updates, clarifications, or to communicate with interested parties.
Oo they're creating their game
Say Undying, quick q: which would be the best channel for a DM to seek help refining their campaign pitch? To say the important things and hopefully attract players who get your ideas, that kind of thing.
Good question - I think it would fit either in #dnd-discussion (just make sure you're not making it a game promo outside of the Looking For Game channels) or #dm-discussion.
For a few seconds I was like "NO DON'T UNDYING WARLOCK SUCKS"
And then realised you were replying to UndyingNoob
should i buy the players handbook, dungeon master's guide and monster manual for playing d&d?
you should not buy it to play but i have it and its really nice so its not a waste of youre money
oh okay tyy
Are you planning on being the DM of your game?
yes ig
None of those books are strictly necessary to play the game. You can get by completely for free using the free Basic Rules
No idea what I’m doing
so mayeb should i but the starter set or essential kit?

Welcome! The best place to start is with the free Basic Rules, linked in the bot post above. As you're giving them a read, we'll be happy to answer any specific questions you have here in this chat.
If you’d like to make an initial investment, you can!
Plenty of free pre-written adventures exist however, such as Peril in Pinebrook
i actually have no idea what should i buy to play d&d
If you don’t want to buy anything you don’t have to
no i want to i just don't know what to buy
I’d suggest the PHB as a first purchase then
You should play free campaigns first and see what you like and buy a campaign that has those aspects, aside from that if you're planning on in-person DnD then a couple of dice wouldn't hurt
where should i buy it from?
how many campaigns are there?
There are hundreds of free campaigns from the community and from DnD Beyond
Anywhere you can get a good price on it. If you’re buying to play online I suggest buying it on D&DBeyond, D&D’s official online tool / marketplace. They also sell physical/digital bundles there.
If you wanted only the physical copy check out your local bookstore, local game store, Amazon, etc.
like this page in dnd beyond ?(https://dndstore.wizards.com/uk/en/campaigncollections)
tyyy
Those are paid adventures. Here’s some free adventures on D&DBeyond:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/tag/free-adventure
And here is the aforementioned Peril in Pinebrook adventure which is recommended for new DMs:

Hi! I’m new to D&D and looking for a beginner-friendly group.
I’m open to learning, comfortable with voice, and available on weekends.
Timezone: IST.
Looking for one-shots or a short campaign.
Hope I don't bother anyone
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:

follow the rules there Gladiator
Alright...give me some time and I will go through everything so that I don't cause a problem
There are as many campaigns as there are DMs, probably more (since many DMs run multiple campaigns). Getting into one is another story, but that’s because for every party (typically 3-5 people) there’s only 1 DM.
i just made my dnd character where can i play
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:

- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
Check the listings in #looking-for-players for games that want people, read the details, respond as appropriate and cross your fingers.
Type /looking and select the option for #looking-for-dm to advertise yourself as a new player in search of a group. Be sure to include your regular availability!
There are other Discord servers where people gather for games. You can find them in #looking-for-community .
Aside from here, you could also try LFG areas in sites like Reddit, Roll20 or the D&D Beyond forums to get started.
It can take a bit to find a game sometimes, but to increase your chances I recommend:
- Having a good familiarity with the Basic Rules
- Applying to games that match your availability. Don’t be discouraged about applying to games in different timezones as long as the equivalent time fits within your schedule!
- Cast your net wide. This server and D&DBeyond aren’t the only places to look for games. Check out this comprehensive guide by fellow user iamrazorwing for more ways to find games.
- Look for games whose style matches what you’d be interested in. For example, a combat-oriented game if you like the combat side of D&D
Hey so I'm new to dnd I tried the interactive adventure and really liked it. I read the how to play but what campaign should I get
Do you want to be a DM?
If you want to try your hand at DMing I suggest starting with the free adventure Peril in Pinebrook, which I linked a little further up in chat.
Otherwise as a player a campaign purchase isn’t necessary.
Oh really? I thought campaign was like the board game itself
Coz on Amazon when i search dnd I get a bunch of these board games that are like $50
Nope, D&D isn’t a board game! 😅 Campaign sets usually come with a lot of useful tools for facilitating play however, like dice sets and battlemaps
As well as the adventure booklet to detail the campaign the DM will run
Oh... Well thats embarrasing, when I asked my friend he said it wss a board game
What is it then?
It's kind of close to a board game! Board games and Tabletop RPG games like DnD are kind of like cousins.
it's like a board game with a lot of freedom
Well both of those are nice ways to explain it
It's like a collaborative storytelling game with role playing game mechanics.
So which tabletop should I get
Thanks!
I'd suggest starting with just the free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
We are in the D&D server so I do recommend playing 5e as your first TTRPG. I’ve played a few different ones and D&D is really good at introducing new players into the hobby
If you haven’t already, try to get as familiar as you can with the Basic Rules. Feel free to ask questions along the way and make a practice character. After that try your hand at finding a group via #find-a-game !
Thanks, Ill read that!
Alright, thanks for the help guys
You need 1 Dungeon Master (the story teller guide and rules officiator) and 3-6 players playing player characters (main actors in the story), a way to track characters (character sheets), dice (digital or physical) and a way to communicate (in person or online)
I think I'll read the basic rules and come back later
We also have the helpful #learn-to-play
Focus on the first 2 chapters of the free basic rules
Yeah I read that actually!
They cover the core game mechanics and explain how to create a character sheet
Ok, this ones really helpful because I dont know how many chapters there are
Anyways Ill start reading them
And again thanks for the help!
No problem! And feel free to ask specific questions as you run into things
Folks here are pretty helpful and can help explain and answer specific questions.
Dont worry I'm gonna need it😅
Hey All! Like many others (maybe?).... I've decided to dive into DnD post Stranger Things... Heard of it for a while but never got the time to dive into it.... Where to start? thx

There are great links in the bot. then come back and ask specific questions if you have them
how to know if a encounter is too easy, balanced, or too hard?
my party fought a cerberus (with my own terms) and took 9 rounds to defeat it. with a total of 2 instances of 0hp
Designing encounters is one of the harder parts for DMs. I'd recommend asking over in #dm-discussion . They can help you out there.
i don't have netflix so i haven't seen stranger things. what's this new stranger things set people keep asking about that isn;t the hellfire or thessalhydra set?
or were people meaning the comic that i have yet to read either?
I don't think there is one past the Hellfire set. Did people refer to anything in specific that excludes that one?
Hi everyone so I have just sort of got into dnd have been obsessing for the past 3 years and finally want to play do I need to make character sheets or do they get made for me
you can make your own or print one out or do it online. what way were you planning to try to play, in person or through the internet?
There are premade character sheets for many adventures, though I would certainly recommend making your own. There's no better way to understand what all your statistics and abilities do than to fill out your own character sheet.
So many people actually dm’ed me i didnt expect this 😭
Curse of plenty!
More players then DMs! Make sure to do your vetting - you want a group that you feel like you can work well together and meshes with how you'd like to play D&D.
I panicked but fixed myself quickly asked couple questions all of em
is it normal to feel more exhausted than my players as a beginner DM?
Welcome! There are many ways to start playing but the best way imo is to actually read the core rulebooks (player's handbook, dungeon master's guide and monster manual) before getting into playing . Alternatives can get you in quicker but at the price of not knowing fully what's going on. Another advantage of reading all three rulebooks is that you might actually decide to be a dungeon master which will make it easier to gather friends to play with you or find people to play with online.
why is dmpc so hated in here...
Depends? A Dm does have a lot of stuff on their plate to manage so it can be a bit more mentally exhausting.
They often overshadow the player characters, have knowledge the DM knows and acts on it, and the DM may use it to drive the story in a direction that nullify's player agency.
Which is why many DMs suggest avoiding having a DMPC
isnt that just a skill issue
my player didnt have that problem (my dmpc actually almost died)
An NPC who's in the back helping out but doesn't make decisions? Usually not a problem.
A DMPC driven by the DM to try and push the story a certain way? Usually problematic.
a good "DMPC" is just a NPC that is around the party a lot
that is how i play my DMPC's
convergent evolution
the only story relevant thing my DMPC's have ever done was die to an attack from the BBEG
then dont call them DMPCs, because the term is generally meant to point of problematic DM behaviour
true, but it is by definition a DMPC
depends on the definition
and i like to be open with my players
i kinda use my dmpc to be funny
symantics. if you and your players enjoy your DMPC then keep it up and others opinions don't matter
my npcs are way too serious
i dunno, i think it works out for me and my friend
his pc interacts with my pc normally (they're literally us)
and the npcs are actually tied to the world
Online hopefully I’m in north uk and no one around me plays in person, so I joined this hoping to join a table I just feel the fact I’m new would be abit of a downfall for people
maybe the better term is sidekick? the term DMPC does imply that they are a driving force in the party
christy have you checked out

most tables accept new people
why is the printed version of character sheets often look janky and missing things (words cut off)
if you want to learn how to play through some classes, theres's the Altrole server. i dont think there's actual classes on this discord. also there are no games on this discord, however thwere are lots of postings in that find a game channel that was just posted. as for making a character online, your best bet might be DnDBeyond using their free rules.
I was a DM in my first game and after a player quit, I continued playing with her character. So from my experience with that DMPC I can say that for a beginner DM it can be overwhelming (the character died soon after). As this is a channel for newcomers, that is an important consideration too.
you mean when it's exported? mainly because that wasn't a primary feature and the higher ups keep pushing that lower as a priority for the devs to work on.
"it works good enough" is what i've always been told. but if you want to export something with a whole lot of stuff, it just doesnt work
Also how the heck is the PDF supposed to know you're dropping a novel in a field? (e.g. tough design problem, no good solutions)
i didnt drop a novel, even the personality traits is being cut off
also what's the skin color supposed to say? i use the fitzpatrick scale
i've noticed certain fields on the DnDB character sheet don't really get exported anywhere. also, when you get to higher levels there are additional things that just get cut off.
you could put whatever you want in that skin colour field
does anyone know where i can find a one shot ive never played before and i want to get my feet wet
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).

- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
When you say "find a one shot" do you mean you want to find a prewritten adventure that you can run as a DM or do you mean you want to find a group that's going to play a one-shot?
i want to find a group that is going to play a one shot
ik multi sessions are by far the most common but i dont wanna mess up more experience players rp or games
the game is pretty fault tolerant
it uses words and language and imagination. mistakes happen all the time.
but i do agree that a one shot is a great way to start.
If you want to find a one shot group to play with, the process isn't much different from finding a full campaign. The best advice I can give you is to cast a wide net. You can check the #looking-for-players channel on this server, but you can also check other discord servers, and other websites like facebook and reddit. The more places you look, the better chance you have of finding something that fits what you are looking for
thank you will do
hello is there a way i can get a teacher in here to teach me the game of DND
We have #learn-to-play and feel free to ask specifci questions here
ok ty
But no we do not provide one on one training as many of us just don't have bandwidth and time to do that.
But do please ask specific questions - the community is pretty good at helping to answer them.
pretty new in gerneral, but very new to DMing. Have a family campaign slot with the kids, we finished Peril in Pinebrook and they really liked that setting ( let them use their own characters) what did you all do after that? If there another premade to continue that story looking for the Trolls and egg, or was it made so you create the next one?
Kind of hoping for another premade campaign, not sure if im ready to write one out just yet.
There are several D&D adventure anthology books like:
- Candlekeep Mysteries
- Journey's Through the Radiant Citadel
- Keys from the Golden Vault
Wild Beyond the Witchlight can also be a fun "fairy-tale" like adventure although a heads up that the end may need a bit of DM adaptation/adjustment.
You can also just take where you left off in Pinebrook and build out your own adventures inspired by the setting and player choices
Hey does anyone know where i can find a link to join a game in dungeons and dragons beyond
"Dragons of Stormwreck Ilse" and "Lost Mines of Phandelver" are two highly recommended beginner campaigns if you want something that acts as one continuous story. Chapter 1 of Stormwreck Ilse is available for free (called Intro to Stormwreck Ilse). Lost Mines has the benefit of including a nice ending point at level 5, but with the option to continue it to the sequal adventure called Phandelver and Below
You can look for game in the Looking For Game channels - please read #find-a-game carefully to learn how to use those channels.
To clarify your question, do you have a campaign set up already that you are trying to figure out how to join, or are you trying to find a game to join in the first place?
In dungeons and dragons beyond the app and to join in first place
The mobile app doesn't run campaigns - it's for looking up books, items, or character sheets.
Ok thanks
You find a game like through the Looking For Game channels or places like Roll20
The important thing to keep in mind is that D&D is not a video game. You can't click a button to join a queue or anything like that. To actually join a game, you need to find one via word of mouth. There are many places where people publicly advertise their campaigns if they have an open slot. This discord has several channels dedicated to that. If you find a game that looks interesting to you, you need to reach out to that DM and ask them if you can join.
im like very new to dnd because my country like zero people played it, im so facinated about this tabletop, does anyone have time to teach me thru a call haha
Unfortunately we do not have bandwidth and time to teach folks one on one - but you can check out #learn-to-play and feel free to ask specific questions here

But also welcome to D&D! The nice folks here can help answer your specific questions as you run into them
As Undying Noob pointed out, we don't have the ability to do 1-on-1 lessons, but we have lots of resources prepared to help newcomers. We're happy and answer any and all questions you ask here though
sure
hii
Can anybody help me in making my 1st ever character ? i tried making one but it had so many stuffs it blocked my brain
We can answer questions here, yeah. But first, have you actually read through the Basic Rules and the step by step guide on how to build your character?
i did read the rules
when i went to create one it was too confusing and i thought i would rather take help of an expert/who have done this before
Sure thing. Well, first off, have you selected your class?
fighter as a starting
Alright, Fighter is a great class for new players
mm yea i learned some basic stuffs from gpt
I wouldn't recommend using chat GPT for DnD. It gets a ton of rules wrong.
But let's move on. Up next, have you selected a species?
yea like only the basic stuff like what is what
human as a start
or u can suggest
Human is great, yeah.
The final big decision is picking a background.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-origins#BackgroundDescriptions
ok
Soldier is a great pick for Fighters
Soldier?
Nice and easy, yeah.
yea alright i will take that
Because you're a human, you get to pick one free Origin feat.
Soldier already gives you Savage Attacker, so I'd recommend either Alert or Skilled. Here's the list of what they do below:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/feats#OriginFeats
Alert...ok?
Alright, now you've got all your major choices picked.
Species: Human
Background: Soldier
Class: Fighter
Origin feats: Alert + Savage Attacker
Read up on what all of these things give you at level 1, make any additional minor choices that they offer, and put all that on your character sheet
Then, come up with a vague backstory and you're ready to start your search for a group!
alright
thx buddy
😭 it says the development is incomplete....there are so many things
going to read up on dnd beyond Free Rules... but any good YouTube videos/playlists for those who like a more visual learning aspect to it
nm
Is DnD Beyond the best/ new user friendly online or digital platform to use at this point?
I would say so, yeah
it is considered to be so yes and is the official one of D&D
but it is not the only one lol
Ginny Di has a create series about being a new player, and Matt Coleville has a great series about being a new DM
ook thank you all. Wanted to get some of the books at least digitally and start moving into a DM role, I've used Owlbear in the past but it didn't have all the books attached to it.
Owlbear Rodeo is just a virtual tabletop; they don't host books or other game material, as far as I know.
Owlbear Rodeo is a good VTT for playing the game, but you are correct that it lacks the rules and information about how to play. Its just a platform for moving tokens around a map

thank you my friend will do!
Still going through the different resources and whatnot.... to learn it... but have a question
Can you create like one character... lets just say to begin with... once I understand everything and whatnot... in the dnd beyond create a character process.... can one use that same character throughout different campaigns of dnd regardless of the theme of the campaign?
You can use the same character idea, but they don't transfer their experience points, magic items, etc. They'd be starting over, essentially.
I see
Some folks attach to a single character concept, but plenty of others find the process of character creation fun (once you get the hang of it, of course)!
I have a character idea

I did a quick explainer of every class to my 9 y/o brother. He said he'd prefer to play a paladin. In fact his real world stats are closest to having high int, str and cha
how does AC work, is it for hits or damages. or both
hi
AC is the number needed for a hit to connect. So if you have an AC of 18 and their attack is an 18 or higher, it would successfully hit and do damage which you would subtract from your health points.
so either it doesnt hit at all or fully connect
If the attack roll + bonuses and modifers meets or beats the target's Armor Class, it hits

Yes. There are attacks that do not use AC and instead you would be using your saving throws. In those cases, you roll a d20 and add your saving throw modifer to see if you succesfully save or not.
when I get attacked is there any way to decrease the damage
There are some spells, racial abilities, and things like resistance to certain damage types
The barbarian when raging is resistant to slash/bludg/pierce dmg as an example
tyy
Dragonborn are resistant to the dmg type of their ancestor

i see a lot of posts in "looking to play". Some have character requirements. Does that mean I need to already have a character ready with stats? if so is there a resource I can use for that?
most often I find they don't care either way if you have one ready. If you want to practice making one, D&D Beyond is a great place to do so
I think it's reasonable to assume that many DMs will expect you to have an idea of what character you want to play. They may not expect you to have a full sheet prepared, and some will prefer it if you actually didn't have a full sheet prepared. It's on a DM by DM basis.
You can have a character ready, especially if it's more of a general plan than very specific one, since lot of DMs may prefer the character will actually fit the setting. They might have limits on specific races / species, or not use certain sources, for example
But no harm in making characters ahead of time, and it's a good practice anyways, just best to not got too attached, at least to the specifics
can my character be a a piglet
Not an existing race, so comes down to either flavoring an existing race or homebrew, though up to the DM either way
A pig isn't one of the available species options for players. You can find a list of species here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-origins#SpeciesDescriptions
How do you find groups to play with? My wife and I are looking to start playing but we don’t really know where to start looking. Is there a way to find an adult only group that is online?

HI Zoe.
Hi
who says i can’t be a pig
oink oink
HI mitcho.
hi kitty. if you guys have specific questions, fire away
zoe, have you read and have a good grasp of the basic rules?
I have read it but i dont understand it at all
Im playing for the first time in general and i was the only one interested as a dm🥹
?dmtips
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
It's not one of the player species options. I'd recommend reading through the Basic Rules to get an idea of how DnD is played. Contrary to what some people assume, DnD isn't a free form roleplaying game.
there are some great tips there and here
well that didnt work lol
also have you watched any youtube D&D games or listened to any podcasted games?
I have watched a few podcasts but theyre not that great for understanding it since most of em dont really explain the basics
Also Zoe there are some cool prewritten starter campaigns / oneshots you can start with to learn the ropes
Are they free perchance🥹
there are both free and paid ones available I do believe
I know Peril in Pinebrook is, which is a great starter adventure
and free correct Dosh?
Yup
Do you guys have some links? I like wordbuilding, but since im new i have no idea how to do this
So i'll just work from there
i’m going to be a pig
Guys how do I start d&d?

WERE DO I GO TO GET HELP WITH MY DND SHEET HELP ME IM LOST 😭
Hello! Just to confirm, have you read through the step by step guide to character creation in the Basic Rules yet?
Yeah there just some things in my sheet that i cant make sense of
what are you struggling with. maybe we can help
We can help with specific questions if you're stuck on something in particular.
and ive played before but idk if i did mistakes
well one is my wizard spells im a sorcerer and i have some spells from a diferent class?
idk how to usw them😭
like i googled it and it said smth about how i dont use spell slots on them like ???
Some spells are on both the Wizard spell list and the Sorcerer spell list, like Magic Missile or Shield. As a Sorcerer, you can pick your spells from any that are labeled Sorcerer.
Where are the wizard spells coming from?
HUH😭 ????
Ah, maybe you have the Magic Initiate feature. Check to see if that's on your list.
were do i find that?
Are you using DnD Beyond?
yes
They'll be under the Feats tab.
do you have an ability/feature that tells you to have certain spells prepared?
but i also have the sheet in like the original form but its also from beyond
Check under the Feats tab for Magic Initiate.
ok so cuz idk when i created the sheet through beyond after i selected my spells it made me select some spells that r from the wizard and the druid spells and isk how to use them etc
in the beyond sheet or the original?
what spells did it make you select?
In DnD Beyond, which is where I assume you're building your character.
u got to be kidding me\
Koraidon EX Hyper Rare Holo Card 254/198 SV01 Scarlet & Violet Base Set PSA 9
you cant just link to an adress on your hard drive lmao
i feel like a grandma
lol
what do you want to link here, your DnD beyond sheet?
Let's try this: what species, class and background did you pick?
shocking grasp wiz chill toch wiz spare the dying cle guidance cle thunderwave wiz guiding bolt cle
human sorcerer Alyteco
I am at Barnes and noble right now and I have $108 I am tempted to buy rulebooks I obviously can’t afford all 3 but if I wanted to get a jumpstart which ones would you recommend?
I know the players handbook for sure but what about dungeon masters or monsters manual?
Or should I get a starter set instead?
I would love to try my hand at being a dungeon master but idk if it’s wise to start dnd with no experience (besides some player experience in other ttrpg games like Star Trek and dragon age games) and if I were to try to dm what’s best way to get premade one off campaigns? Again I only have $106 about until a few weeks from now on second pay day
Which background did you pick?
would it help if u can see my sheet ?
i tried if it could help
Shocking Grasp and Chill Touch are on both the Wizard and Sorcerer spell lists.
If you're planning on being a DM, then the DMG is a great pickup. The Monster Manual is a big help for longer campaigns, but isn't strictly necessary.
If you plan to play in person then the players handbook and a module since you are new. if you plan to play online, I suggest you use that money for digital books
Alyteco is the background
eventually getting the dungeon masters guide and monster manual
Acolyte, I assume.
i literally copy pasted it from the sheet
so to show us your DnD Beyond sheet, you need to do two things:
go into the character builder -> Home -> scroll down -> set it to public.
then, go back into the sheet and copy&paste the adress to your sheet from your browser window.
Spare the Dying, Guidance and Guiding Bolt are from your background as part of the Magic Initiate feat.
its a pdf link from the basic original sheet not the dnd beyond one
well it is dnd beyond just not the one in the cite
its easier to share the actual websheet imo, but if you want to share the pdf, you would have to upload it to a file hoster first
Ty all I will see if they have any one offs for sell and in stock and I will start with players handbook instead of dungeon masters handbook even if I want to start as a dungeon master I should probably know players stuff first
The PHB has the core rules of the game, so even if you're the DM, you need to be familiar with its content (except for the player options, though knowing that stuff can certainly help)!
Been reading the documents, gets confusing at some points but ima try to learn more and been trying to create a character
No pressure, but if you have questions, folks can try to answer 'em.
You got everthing figured out now, or are you still confused?
I think it might be cause im tired? So ill try to read again tomorrow haha
Well I did it I officially bought my first dnd players handbook the 2024 edition
I almost bought a set of dice but my 101 campaign I paid for and start on Tuesday the 6th comes with a free dice set I may buy a dice bag though when I get there (got the rulebook from Barnes and Nobel because I have a membership here so it was like $45 and supports the store I love)
Nice! I hope you enjoy it. I bought have the digital version of the PHB, but I bought a physical one as well just because I loved the art and wanted to be able to flip through it.

We recommend checking out the rules (at least the first two chapters) and #learn-to-play as a first step!
im curious about why some things such as traveling certain distance takes certain amount of minutes, like is there a day-night cycle in the campaign and that affects something?
In theory, the world keeps moving while players are doing things, so if it takes you however long to reach a destination, the DM likely takes that into account.
it affects how light out it is outside, and therefore how much you can see
it also gets a little bit colder at night too
ohhh okay but the characters dont have to like rest or anything if they dont want to i suppose
no, you basically have to get some sleep every night
Going without a rest does entail conseqences, but it doesn't have to be strictly at night.
Because this game like most games with a sun and moon, has day and night cycles
No you will need to rest, otherwise you run the risk of your character dying from exhaustion
ohhh okay thank you guys

i just created my character today
Checkout #looking-for-players where there are some games listed for new players.
I recent introduced my players to what exhaustion does. Though I was using 2014 rules for exhaustion which are harsher than 2024 rules.
Yea, I noticed they changed it. Although I think the 2014 rules for exhaustion a better as it provides more of a reason to avoid even getting 1 level of exhaustion.
I’m new to DND and looking to get involved to a committed group if anyone could advise me or have any spots I’d appreciate it based in UK

Here are some great links to help ya get started. you can come back after and ask questions that you come to as you read
For dnd, can u like stray away from your party and be the villan or something around those lines?
Rarely. Only if the DM (and sometimes also the other players) agree
Oh thats sick
Most of the time you can’t
Do you have to like ask them first?
Howdy
DnD is built for the players to be fighting together on one side and the DM to be basically everything else
How would someone start playing?
Hey im wanting to learn how to play as well!
And whats the difference between like a d20 and a d100

Dice
Dice add randomness to the game. The 20-sided die (d20) is the most important one you’ll use. When the outcome of an action is uncertain, the game uses D20 Tests to determine success or failure. The higher your roll, the more likely it is that you succeed. The most common use for dice other than the d20 is to determine damage.
When you need to roll dice, the rules tell you how many dice to roll of a certain type, along with any numbers to add or subtract. For example, “3d8 + 5” means you roll three eight-sided dice, add them together, and add 5 to the total.
thank u nugget
Yes, though you still have to pay for some content that’s in books
so i can play for free and for the paid content howmuchis it
like expensive or cheap
It can be expensive, although the digital versions are cheaper
It’s for like species and subclasses, and yeah it’s fairly pricey
phantom. usually players dont have to pay anything if they dont want. the DM usually shares the books they have paid for. the advantage to the monthly subscriptions as a player is you can have unlimited characters
do i need to pay for dhampir
Yes
and monk
Thats so sick
No
But yes for shadow
brooooooooooo
someone has to pay for those things. so if you are in a campaign that the DM or other players share those sources, then you do not need them yourself.
im lwk gonna get everyon invoilved with this decision
and yes if you are starting the group with friends, maybe you cann all split the cost of the books u guys agree too
nah in the soltitude rn
but someone has to have the D&D Beyond subscription too to share
Does a dnd character need to be alive? Can it be like a funny joke character?
in 3.5 e
theres undead
What the what now
there is undead but it is RARE that a player plays as one. adds a big level of complexity
older dnd allowed for the undead such as ghosts
new has it too, just not a common thing at all
like my favourite class in game is the ghost
it cant die it just rejuvinates
and id be a literal phantom
reborn is cool too i guess but no where near as good and has near to no combat prowess
Does dnd characters have to be serious? Or can it be funny
if you read or wtach the manga or anime of one punch man you may know zombie man, he is an immortal being that regenerates its kinda liek him
it can be whatever you want
but that would be homebrew so many dms may not agree and not let you
if you want a new concept
You can play however you wish when it comes to personality but it is a group game, so they group should all be on the same page. if they want a serious game and you are off the wall goofy, that may nopt work. but many times silliness is a part of it
but backstory personality etc is allowed
I was thinking like a dumb orc mage that graduated by accident and all of his spells work but not how he wants it
nah
cant have spells malfunction thats up to the dice
everythign else is ok
Interesting
There’s wild magic sorcery
That sounds like could fit into being a wild magic sorcerer
Sounds perfect here
if you wanted to you could shoot yourself with fireball or whatever
but its not like you could get a negative luck boost
What if i name him after like the last thing he stole then its some dumb name like bread
Would that be funny?
Oh yeahh
thief*
A rogue right?
rogues are op
A big buff orc thats supposed to be sneaky oh thats class
you could do half orc
or a bugbear, they are better in so many ways but actually stealthy
orcs are good in mobility but they are raging barbaric bulls most of the time
I mean, they really don't have to be
Ohh i forgot to think about the race
basically green aggressive minotaurs most of the time dont have to tho
they can be friendly gentle giants
just not how they are typically believed to be or depicted as
I got a funny oc now, thank you
np
Just because a race has a reputation for being one way or another doesn't mean you have to make them like that
yeah
For a rogue, which is funnier? An orc or like a half orc
An orc rogue is terrifying lmao. Imagine a 6'5 foot guy suddenly behind you
thats like my people, we are depicted as agressive thieves or simian like barbaric tribe goers in africa but we are not, some of us are but most of us are not
Probably orc
orc
i personally do have one
Orc. No stealth but high intimidation. "YOU NO SEE KRUG!"
EXACTLY WHAT I WAS THINKING LMAO
NO DOOR, NO CRIME
Pickpocket "Krug want NOW!" As he points at the pocket watch hanging out of there pocket
Because his name is the last thing he stole, his name changes a lot. Last week he was Coin Bonecrusher, Now hes Bread Bonecrusher.
ok lets keep this to questions for new folks. don't want to wash away topics or scare folks off
Sorry sorry
spawns with evil intent...😼
my charaters backstory was he was a monk in the midst of training then his monestary under attack suddenly everyone they ever cared for was being tortured to death, after to survive, he became a thief and met someone at a village currently at war whom held a mysterious object whom offered money for me and a group of others to go deliver it to a cave thousands of meters above ground level for a trade of supplies as its not possible for him to leave as they are low on numbers

Any suggestions for a simple dungeon crawler adventure for a new dm and new players?
does anyone know how to use the bots in the lf channel?? the link wont work in the FAQ
I just want to be a dwarve
in which channel?
looking-for-dm
Are you trying to make a post?
yes!!
you'll need to type the command/click the link in the #find-a-game channel
hey guys i have a question how long ussualy you are looking for a game as a player ?
and almost new player... well i played baldurs gate xd
highly depends on how picky you are. if you only have very specific needs it will be much harder. it is very hard to begin with as they raio of players to available DMs is FAR FAR FAR greater in the players side
It depends on your interests and if the DM would think you'd fit the group dynamic
i just need to play i’m not picky at all ngl, just bored and wants to learn more abt dnd
Same
Still might take some time, maybe try join a couple one-shots while you're searching for a more permanent group
your best bet is to follow the steps to make a lookng for DM post following the steos in #find-a-game
all 3 of them already have
what’s a one shot?
the next step is patience. also try facebook groups, reddit, and Roll20 has ways too
It's basically a mini-campaign that you do all at once, the ones that I've played took about 6-8 hours to do.
6-8 hour campaign.. oof
You could think of it as just doing one quest and only one quest without deviating
Do you also try to find these in the looking for dm channel?
I’m new and never played before I have a interest in the sorcerer class but don’t know where to start what would u recommend I do when creating my character on DnD beyond

Yea
More likely to be in the #looking-for-players channel, usually the post will specify if it's a one-shot or not.
i'm new as well but im more of a hands on kind of learner, are there any games i can join for newbies like me?

peace. start practing building a character on D&D Beyond and just go step by step. it does a great job explaining everything
whats 5e and stuff like that mean??
5e refers to 5th Edition DnD, there 2 versions of 5e which most people with refer to as either 5e 2014 or 5e 2024, as that's the years they came out in.
Also some will refer to 5e 2024 as 5.5e
Ok thanks
which is the best for beginners?
It's either or really, but probably 5e 2024 because of the access to the free rules on dndbeyond
Can you play fighter with a great sword? Or possibly Barbarian in heavy armor? I like idea of like a 2h knight someone good at dispensing martial justice and someone of noble birth and class but can really go to town on a bad guy wailing on them with a giant weapon
Fighter with great sword absolutely, Barbarian with heavy armor is a lot harder, cause a lot of your barbarian abilities are locked if you wear heavy armor
Cool ty I’ll make a fighter with a great sword then
You can do Barbarian with Half plate though, since its Medium armor
Yes, fighters can have greatswords, and yes Barbarians can have heavy armour. Although I'd say there cons outweigh the pros as Barbarians are not proficient with heavy armour without the taking of additional feats.
Another quick question (and ty all for the awesome help while I wait for my campaign to start on Tuesday) would you recommend as a new player going with the recommended stats of class or rolling for them to make it bit more rng?
I admit I am just inpatient while I wait for campaign to start i am very excited to get going and learn how to play
I downloaded neverwinter the mmo to have something in the world to keep me busy before and in between play sessions
I know it’s way different rules and gameplay more playing for the world and lore and I love mmos and taking a break from my current MMOs because of burnout
Don't roll.
That may depend on how your DM wants you to generate stats
That depends on the DM as really they should choose how each player gets their stats for balance.
As if some players go with the rolling method they have a chance to have a charater with 18+ in their stats when you factor in ASI, whereas pointbuy/standard array you can only get a maximum of 17
I don't trust DMs that demand rolled stats, but that's me.
From my personal experience, most DMs will have a set method they'll ask the whole party to stick with
Good to know
though I dont have any experience with community games, so if you participating in a community game they may be more flexible
ultimately just ask your DM
At level 1, you're "professional" standard in anything you get +4 or better in. Use that as a benchmark for what you want your character to be competent at. And never put Constitution below 10!
Like @wild onyx said, never put Con below 10, that's just asking for your character to die.
how do i find a party to play with
Check the listings in #looking-for-players for games that want people, read the details, respond as appropriate and cross your fingers.

How do I change my character?
In what way?
i was reading about the Changeling race and got a question what if a player's character is a Changeling because of a traumatic past or whatever their memory changed in a way that makes them believe that they are another person from a different race, how would a DM handle this charchter
I'm not sure what you mean. Generally speaking, you wouldn't become a race because of trauma
Believing you were a different species is something you could RP with pretty much any character, but honestly, I'm not really sure what the goal of that would be here
Me personally, I would say rather that becoming a changeling through trauma, as changing your race doesn't really happen that way, instead have the trauma be they reason the no longer know that they're a changeling.
I believe i didn't explain myself well,as far as i know changeling can mimic other people's appearance
This specific changeling mimicked a person from a different race and they believe they are that person
My question would be if this information should be public to all the players or can the dm make it as plot twist and if so how can they do it since the players can figure it out from the modifiers or special attributes of a race
If the character thinks that they're, lets just say a human for example, when they're actually a changeling, then the topic of them being a changeling wouldn't be brought up so no one would know.
Hey guys!

Hi here, I’m Nugget!
great info in the bots
Indeed
Sup nugget
So so far, what DO you understand?
You played before?
Just don’t wanna retell you info you already may know
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, I recommend just learning how to make a character, basic ability checks, modifiers, core gameplay, classes and combat.
And of course, ask your questions here
@hearty blaze when making a character what are the like restrictions
Well, there are some methods of stat generations that streamline the power of chaarcters
There’s also official classes, subclasses and species
hi
So choose out of those, unless you wish to homebrew one with your DM
Well, this isn't exactly my first time roleplaying, since I used to do text roleplay (without dice) on platforms like Amino. Uh, I've already created a character in D&D Beyond; I know how to create a character. But I still don't understand the dice system, when to use them, etc.
Yes but There are some characteristics that are different from race to race that may confuse the other players correct me if I'm wrong Changeling doesn't have darkvision while Half-Elves do have it if the Changeling believe that they are a half-elf and they were in night they wouldn't see anything which wouldn't make sense to other players while in this specific scenario it can be explained by another way or the dm can just avoid it or even use it as a way to foreshadow i also believe that there are so many of similar scenarios that th dm can't handle all of them so can the dm ignore some of the Minor rules for the sake of it or what exactly?(I've never played before I'm just asking from what i know)
Already off to a decent start then. Could you send the character here to see if you’ve made any hiccups?

Ty
For sure, wait a min
If I was the DM, i wouldn’t adapt anything to keep up the secret. That’s up to the player.
I’d can also allow them to choose if they want to disclose it, cuz it’s either not gonna matter or get found out quickly (no big deal), or be a cool twist
But that’s just me
You could have the character explain it away as they don't know, since if they character was absolute in their belief that they were a race that wasn't a changeling they wouldn't know why they don't have the natural abilities that they think they should have.
You could turn it into part of the character's story as well, like they're searching for someone that has the knowledge to explain why they don't have the "right" abilities.
Aight that’s usable, just two things to note:
your backstory is very specific, so if you don’t ah e a DM the story might not mesh well into the setting. Be ready to change things if need be, though that likely will be minor.
2: you can get another spell
oh right
yeah i should change that
But overall good for a first try
I see you’re playing on 2014 rules?
Wait no
Hm? How come you’re a variant human…those aren’t in the 2024 rules that your character is in. I know cuz you have weapon masteries
Thanks
np
Are they using a mix of both? Because obviously to us, you can do that although the DM would need to approve.
They said it’s the first time they’ve heard of dnd. So I doubt they have a DM
That's true but not what I meant. I was more meaning that if they wanted to use the character with the variant human race they'd need that to be approved by whoever is going to be their DM. Otherwise they'll need to change to the 2024 human.
Hello!
hi
Hello 🙂 I am new to DND- just trying to figure out how to play. I bought a preset adventure and feel really stupid becuase none of it makes sense.
Hey everyone! My name is Aidan. I am new to DND. My friends have been into it, but I kind of just got into it recently.
I need some feedback on formulating a username to create my character. Any feedback or idea ideas would be great. Thank you!
If you have specific questions, folks can better help!
Are you asking for ways to generate character names?
Indeed! I’m currently trying to create my character, on the DND beyond site. But the issue that I’m having is just formulating a username for it.
I get my names from the following: Random name generators. Translations from other languages. Stealing from disparate media sources my fellow players are unlikely to be familiar with. Remixing syllables, letters, and the like using the above methods.
Thank you! I think we created our characters okay...but honestly, I'm having trouble figuring out what the heck I'm supposed to be doing. None of us have played and my 12 year is the DM... so we are all kinds of confused.
Is there anywhere we can just watch a game being platyed?
*played
You can find tons of pre-recorded (and even live) games on YouTube and Twitch.
D&D at heart is the following loop:
- The DM describes the situation.
- Each player describes what they want their character to do.
- If needed, dice are rolled (to determine success/failure).
- The DM describes the results. Repeat the cycle.
With a prewritten adventure, the situation is already created. The DM should know it not so that they corral the players to following it, but so that they know who/what players will find when they go in various directions. Your job as a player is to go on the adventure presented!
There's also a lot of improvising a DM will have to do. Not sure if that's easier or harder for your particular 12-year-old!
I think the problem is my 12 year old doesn't know how to direct us as the players... do the players always need to work in a team? We started the game...I trlaked to an Inn keeper and my son decided he wanted to start a bar fight and went compeltely off script...even though there isn't a script to follow
Yeah, it's a social collaborative game. It's unspoken, but you all should be working together more often than not.
The players don't always need to work as a team, but if you don't you probably won't get far as the game is design with teamwork in mind.
ok, I think I will have to read the DM book to help because we had no objective at all.
Yeah, that's an important bit: the adventure might just plop you down in a town and ask "What do you want to do?" but more likely it presents a problem to solve (which is where you heroes come in).
Thats how it was presented haha, we were plopped down in this town and that was it! ok, I will do some more research. Thank you!

Oh i should use just human?
Anyone need a fighter
Usually yes
As variant human doesn’t exist in 2024 rules. So you’d have to ask your DM.
We recommend checking out the rules (at least the first two chapters) and #learn-to-play as a first step!
Head to #find-a-game and read through the info for using the server's Looking for Game/Group channels!
Hello. I am new to d&d.
I have the same problem 😭 lol
There is a step by step guide in the free rules, you can find a link to them in #learn-to-play
Maybe this could help
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character
This helps. Thanks
I have another question. Do I need to create a character every campaign? Or my character remains the same?
Usually it’s recommended you do the former
though you can do the later if you're cool with changing things as needed
Thanks for the help guys
While you can reuse the same character, most would say to create a new one for each campaign.
Oh okay. So every character should have character sheet, correct?
Yes, each character you make should have their own sheet, even if you reuse the character as there's not guarantee they be the same level either.
I feel so lost cause I’ve only played bg3 and became interested in d&d but I don’t know how to begin lol
@bold basin
Oh thanks!
some rules will be different to bg3 as to they changed/altered some to make the gameplay work better.
Also the bg3 rules are based off 5th edition 2014, whereas we're now on 5th edition 2024.
Oh I know it must be very different from bg3 it’s just how I started to think it would be cool to play a real campaign!
I've heard & read stories of people playing DnD and essentially having hissy fits over the fact that they could do something in bg3 but were being told no because it didn't work the same way on table top
ive made a player what now
The fun begins
where do i start
take a look at #find-a-game
thankyou

Hello 👋
I’m kinda aiming big for a first campaign of an idea with a major plot twist because my brain figures if I can do the hard things the easy ones with come so much better
Chat I need help. So I’m new to dnd and I bought the starter player handbook and the monster manual and dice. Together that was like $150 dollars. After reading and researching, I found out that not all subclasses nor even races are in the book. And the races I want to be are in several different books. I’d have to spend another $200 just for a few more races and subclasses that I want to play. does anyone have the books? And can help me?
We can’t share the books with ya, that’s against TOS and server rules
Your best bet is homebrewing them probably, or find some other way to access them
It's also a possibility that if you get into a game, the DM or other players can share their books
Hey guys, so i'm new to D&D and im interested on how you decide what your stats are for your charecter, for example strength, intelligence, charisma, etc
there's 3 main ways, standard array, point buy and rolling. The easiest one to use is standard array.
And whats standard array?
?tag new abilities
Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
@weary sandal has tagged the abilities, Point buy and point cost are the same thing. Random generation is the same thing that I was referring to when I said rolling.
hi I just started and I built this character can anyone review it and tell me if there's anything wrong and stuff
Feel free to share the sheet here or in #character-discussion !
If you made it on D&DBeyond you can send the share link to the sheet. If you made it someplace else you can upload the sheet to a trusted file sharing site like Google Drive and send the share link to that instead
Any suggestions on spell set for a beginner sorcerer
Assuming level 1, magic missile + sleep
Cantrips wise there's a bunch of options, I like Mind Silver + Prestidigitation + Fire Bolt
Ty
These are good cantrips as well as guidance when you can pick that up.
Presdigitation is a great rp spell along with minor illusion
hey can someone help me make a ranger human race for my friends dnd
Sure
What rule set and what level?
lvl 1
rule set is normal everything is allowed aslong as it aint dummy op
“Normal” isn’t what I’m asking. 2014 or 2024?
OH
Assuming you’re playing 5e
2014 pretty sure
rolled
They’ll have to roll that in front of the DM. Unless they’ve already got the stats?
nvm its from the core rules tab so 2024
Noted
i already rolled infront
13 17 16 13 16 7
for background i can choose any js no custom ones
yea
What origin feat do you like?
idk any tbh i js do wtv fits
Charlatan (skilled), criminal (alert), guide (Magic initiate druid), wayfarer (lucky) and soldier (savage attacker) are your best options likely
Plus you get another one for being human
Idk what “fits” because I don’t know your character
soldier
Dex and Con
Or con and dex
And stats would be
10, 19, 17, 16, 13, 13
yeah
13 17 16 13 16 7/10
Swapped cha and strength, that’s fine
so cha 13 dex 17 con 16 int 13 wis 16 str 10
Ope, mb I mixed up the orde
10 str, 19 dex, 17 con, 13 int, 16 wis, 13 cha was my suggestion
Now you need to decide the origin feat, the skill proficiencies, the equipment and the backstory
alr
any equipment u rec?
Probably just stick with to recommended equipment
Heyho
I'm in the process of making my first character, but i'm having some trouble trying to fit all the mechanics i would like into a cohesive package.
Is this the right channel for that kind of stuff or should i post in character-discussion?
both here and #character-discussion are the right channels

I'm trying to build a cleric in the 2024 ruleset. with some good offensive punch from range. My DM recommended the Light or Twilight domain (adjusted for 2024 rules). I'm having some troubles with origin and species selection tho
I'd recommend going with Light domain, purely because it means no needing to adjust
i was looking at the Guard, Scribe or Sage origins, either as a human or as a Tiefling.
Alert from Guard seems to synergize really nicely with the initiative advantage you would get from the Twilight domain and perception proficiency seems really good.
Skilled from scribe would give me the option of picking up Arcana, Persuasion and Slight of Hand proficiency to cover of a lack of a dedicated scolar in the party. I like the idea of picking Thaumaturge for my Devine Order to boost Arcana & religion even higher.
Magic initiate Wizard would be nice form even more cantrips, especially since all the cleric dmg cantrips are fail or nothing. Proficiencies seem pretty mediocre tho
Light's definitely packed with firepower
Scorching Ray seemed super cool. twilight gets some nice control spells tho and with a Fighter, Pali and potential Rouge that seems pretty important to have
Not that you have to do this, but you could go Charlatan as you background
lemme consult the book real quick
Wouldn't scribe work better in that case? since i would get the perception boost
nvm. i missread
You could still get Perception, plus if you pick human as your race you get an additional origin feat
oh, the stats i rolled were 8 16 16 11 17 15 if that matters. My DM said since i rolled so well i get a +1 to put on a stat of my choosing
if i go with human my second feat would probably go to magic initiat wizard for the extra cantrips. just the cleric ones seems somewhat limiting
And personally the flavor of scribe fits a bit better into the idea i have when thinking of a cleric that's not Trickery Domain
that works, plus you'd be able to put the ASI onto Wis, whereas with Charlatan you can't
Is the current goliath race and the legacy one the same or are they different?
They’re a lil different iirc
there are some differences
if i go with Twilight domain i would also benefit from darkvision on a human as well
Going human means you get another Origin feat, and another skill.
mechanically it seems like the obvious choice for sure. the baked in resistance and magic of Tieflings does seem pretty tempting as well tho. i could supplement the spellcasting with MI Wizard and would trade the resistance for a skill. The Heroic inspiration per long rest that humans get would be the sacrifice then
