I agree with this list, but that's the opposite order I'd put them in, if they were in order of which decisions you should make first
You're already off to a better start than most. If you've skimmed through them and feel at least comfortable enough to ask questions about what you may or may not understand, then you're in a good spot for us to help you, I think
That's fair!
Starting out, I want to have a full view of which attributes i gain with each of my choices
I'm in with Paladin Class on a Human race, haven't picked a Background yet
as i understand it, i should have 2 trains from paladin, 1 from my human race, and then another trait or two from the background i choose?
starting out on lvl 3 according to my dm if that matters
What you're currently referring to aren't traits, they're skill proficiencies.
And yes, your background typically grants 2 skill proficiencies, and your class usually grants 2 (though some grant more!). Some species, like Human, grant more as well.
As a level 3 Human Paladin, you are probably starting off with 5 skill proficiencies.
great, gonna give that a read and pick those then, thank you
was there any reason WotC decided to have yellow character sheets in their Hellfire set?
I’m thinking of making a player but since I’ve no one really to play with it seems useless
its good practice to get used to making a character. you learn the rules a bit each time.
And my cousins dont seem really into it
yoo if you find a game we could play tgthr
np
Thats true we could do that.. if we have enough people beginner level dnd campaign haha
also, exploring options when you make a character on your own can give you great ideas for a character you might want to play when you do find a game
yeah
Looking forward to it if i do find any games ill lyk
True true so ig I’m gonna try and make a character
dont worry about making mistakes, at this point you can always go back and re-make the character and try different options
how do i show my charecter sheet
as a first character, stick with the level 1 up to level 4 or 5
there's a #character-discussion channel where you can work on character ideas and whatnot. as for sharing your character, if it is on dndbeyond i think you can share the link to it. i dont use dndbeyond, so i'm not sure.
i found a game
nice. you know, you both could always start a game with just the two of you, and take turns being the DM. that works too.
nvm i cant play that one
are you DM or player?
a bit of both. depends on the game.
starting out as a low level character lets you get used to the abilities and skills as you gain them. if you get too much at once like starting at level 15+, it takes too long per turn to figure out what you might want to to. by gradually working up towards that level over time, you learn what works better in what situation. so combat turns and stuff out of combat flows much better and faster
That quick?
We can try this?
i ran a weekly game for about a year, the characters got up to level 6 or 7 in that time. some games level up faster, some level up slower. it depends on a whole lot of things.
as for you both playing a game together, you don't need any special talent or skills to be a DM. experience playing helps, but not required.
So sorry to be a stick in the mud, folks, but server rules require members to stick to the #find-a-game channels or private messages to organize games.
my schedule's full at the moment. you can check the #find-a-game channel to see instructions on how to look for a game
though it is a great thing to see people excited about playing for the first time.
from an october event and a november event where i ran a newbie table for a 3 hour session, the players said they liked it. and three complete newbies have since started their own game each, with the only experience being playing at my table.
and that is awesome
Niceee
Sorry
yoo look in the looking for players
Whats that?
the channel
in #looking-for-players and remember you can search for something in there by typing in the search box at the top right of the screen.
might also be a good idea for Lush and Agent_from_the_north to add each other as friends in discord so you both can message each other later too

Hello people ! I am new to dnd and wanted to find a GM to do a solo adventure, is there a place like that ? Maybe it's not even possible ? Thanks
Solo games are pretty rare (and by design there are very limited slots available when they are recruiting!), but they do pop up now and then. You can check our recruitment channels by following the instructions in #find-a-game .
I certainly wouldn't recommend a solo game for a new player's first experience though.
Oh ? Why ? I thought that like that I could advance at my or my dm rythm without disturbing others
There are also self guided CYOA booklets, mostly from third parties
I linked two of them that I've played through here: #dnd-newcomers message
can either use the provided characters or make your own
Well it would require a DM wanting to run a game for just one player, which has its downsides, like difficulty balancing, and D&D in general being more of a group game, than one on one thing
DnD is a social game at its core. It's designed so that you and about 3 other players work together under the DM's assistance to tell the story of an adventure. Missing out on that key social element really takes away from the experience.
Sorry if what I say is garbage I dont know a lot about dnd.
I thought maybe there were inexperienced dms that wanted to try their campaign on newbies lol , I wanted to be a guinea pig
Well I'll try that too then, I already made a post in #find-a-game .
Can I make a second one or should I delete the first ?
I believe there's a cooldown period before you can post again.
You can make any updates in the thread attached to your original post. If you delete it, you still won't be able to repost until the 7 day cooldown is up
For the point cost method of ability scores, i heard somewhere that you can't increase a stat past 15 with this method. However, reading page 38 of the Handbook, I don't see that being referenced at all. Or am i meant to infer that because the cost allocation stops with 15 at 9 points and doesnt list point cost for past that?
what's the best way for a newbie to find young people to play with? especially IRL, I seem to only find people over my age range and I'm about to give up
Facebook will certainly have a page in your area for dnd.
cost allocation does stop at 15, if it went above that, there would be more in the table. Also it can go above 15 but that is including the modifier from your background
oh so point allocation happens before applying anything from race and background?
Hi i have never played dnd before but i am trying to learn and play a game

looking for a dm for me and my newcomer friends
I would suggest reading the #find-a-game channel, then making a post in the #looking-for-dm channel
Hiii! I started playing dnd a few days ago. Right now i'm playing as a DM, but everytime I ask my players "What do u wanna do?" they say either "I want to explore" or "I want to attack". They both are preety good answers, but most of the time they say they want to attack something that is not even there 😭 or that they want to explore a cave they have been 30 min exploring... It also doesnt help that I want to make it simpler for them, so I use the little board that shows how the caves look that came with the dnd starter set/ essentials kit, so they just say "I want to explore the cave" and proceed to move their characters into like another whole part of the cave. (I have told them not to do that a million times but it feels like they just like to see me suffer)
Anyone has any idea of how could I make them do something or if they want to explore something like a cave, make them explore it for a long time and not just them moving their characters and asking me if they found something?
You could always try setting some hidden traps in the cave. Come up with a few possibilities of different encounters and assign the random encounters with whatever die you want to use and as they explore they can fight little things here and there, explore and gain XP all at the same time. At the end of the day, as long as everyone is having fun, then you’re playing right. ( my personal opinion)
@knotty spear you are the DM you need to guide them not ask for ideas, give them something you want to do . For instance if there is a goblin ambush have an NPC tell them there are rumors of goblins in an area so they head there. They are relying on you to move the story. also true as long as everyone has fun is a good measure.
Might someone know why I have two slightly different Divine Smites?
On D&DBeyond, the first says "Use" and has 1/LR, V for components and the second says "Cast" and has V for components.
Goliath Paladin with Acolyte background, I think all using the 2024 rules if that helps
divine smite is both a spell and and an ability in 2024 so if you have it as a spell you can do it 1/lr, and as a spell slot just my guess?
ohhhh okay that makes sense. thank you!
Level 2: Paladin’s Smite
You always have the Divine Smite spell prepared. In addition, you can cast it without expending a spell slot, but you must finish a Long Rest before you can cast it in this way again.
On D&D Beyond, the "use" button would be your way of casting this spell without expending a spell slot, as discribed above
They have separate buttons for expending a spell slot and not expending a spell slot
OHHHHH so the Use is the no-spell slot, and the Cast is the use a spell slot.
I can use one per long rest, and cast for as many spell slots as I have
more like the objective truth of DMing
if everyone is having a good time, you're doing it right :3
yep. Just remember, "use" is a term that D&D Beyond made up for their system to make it clear which button is which. As far as the actual rule of the game are concerned, you are still casting a spell, even if you don't expend a spell slot. This matters because some effects trigger when you cast a spell. "Using" divine smite can still trigger these things, for example
sure sure, that makes sense. thanks for clarifying
My pleasure
My dad just bought a dnd set to play (horrified) how do you set things up?
Hello
There's not much to "set up." D&D isn't a board game. Its a role playing game. There's prep work that goes into it before you can play, but you don't need pieces or boards or cards or anything like that
I see, thank you

hello im new

If you want to try and find a game, you can follow the instructiong in the bot post above. But if its been a few years since the last time you played, it might be a good idea to familiarize yourself with the rules again before joining a group. There was a pretty massive overhaul to the rules last year, when they released a new set of core rulebooks for 5e
The find a game chat is cool and I was wondering. Do people use other things to find other people to play with ? I’m basically new to it and don’t know much but would love to join a campaign. I was wondering if people know of other places they look for campaigns to join people. Who could help a poor soul out
I collected a bunch of places to search here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1rjwuod1lNBM5n4X_TH2ZoqTULv53jWaVMXtrzKVboms/edit?tab=t.0
Why thank you friend
im back so my friends have chosen to be an elf druid and a wizrd and race dik yet
im gonna be i think the las member of the party
what class would balance a druid and a wizard that works well with being a tiefling
Anything works with a tiefling in 2024 rules (idk about 2014), so maybe something melee?
paladin with a free damage resistance is pretty good
Paladin, fighter, Barbarian, rogue (kinda), ranger (kinda), monk (PUNCH)…
Kinda is only cuz they’re a lil less durable
cant go wrong with any melee
Paladin also fills in the charisma and strength that’s missing
And the other two should have okay dexterity
But tbh any melee works as you said
idk how much i like paladin. ive thought abt rogue?
i think the attacks and like weapons of a barbarian but anger wouldnt suit the character
You’ll just have to try and find a way to trigger sneak attack effectively
Btw rage doesn’t have to be anger
It can just be channeling primal energy usually displayed via a strong emotion
I’ve seen barbarians of ecstasy, divine reverence, anger, sadness, or simply locking Tf in
Also, why not fighter then? Fighter can use any weapon barbarian can
i rlly like the idea of having a pretty chill character having a big weapon
Sounds like a fighter
what exactly is the difference between a fighter and barbarian?
sorry ive never even played a game of dnd so i am tyring to learn all of the classes and races but im still not rlly good with differenciating them
Fighters use more variety of weapons, attack more/faster, can use various weapon masteries on any weapon, can wear heavy armor and get more feats.
Barbarians can’t wear heavy armor, but use primal energy to undergo Rage, giving them chonkier hits, resistances to common forms of damage, and advantage on strength related things (they can also use strength for seemingly unrelated things).
you also get action surge as a fighter, which lets you take 2 actions on your turn once per day (improves a bit at higher level)
which rule set you using? 2024 or 2014?
is there a rule to what class gets what weapons or do you get to choose what you would carry
Different classes have different weapon proficiencies
each class gets certain weapon proficiencies
For example, a rogue can’t effectively use a greatsword because they’re not proficient (they can, but they miss a lot more)
but both Fighter and Barbarian get all weapon proficiencies
Indeed
-# rangers too
so you can use any weapon as either of them, though Barbarians really depend on strength, so using melee weapons for them is recommended
so i can have ANYTHING like even a huge axe if i am a fighter or barbarian
They are both proficient in Greataxes, yep
weapons are sized to your character generally, but flavor is free so
-# how’d you get that through a door
lmao not THAT big. is there a limit to like one weapon as a level one? or like can i have a big axe and also a small dagger?
You can carry multiple weapons
you mean how many weapons you can carry? or wield?
carry
you can carry as many weapons as your carry capacity allows yeah
okay cool cool
and ik there is like different sublasses of races but idk hwo to find the ones for tiefling. ive seen its like the different sins? but honesty idk what it means
Yo, so are there sessions on this server?
No, but you can find games in #find-a-game
Are you playing 2024 rules?
i assume so? id have to ask my dm
make sure to ask, character creation changed a bit between 2014 and 2024
im pretty sure its 2024
-# wait i know the bot commands for the two classes
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-origins#Tiefling <- tiefling stuff
The classes that traditionally use those types of weapons would be fighter, paladin and barbarian I believe
so the different ones are abyssal, chthonic and inferenal?
By RAW (Rules as Written), yep
if you want some custom stuff you can always ask your DM
but no guarantees for that
Rangers have proficiency, and clerics and Druids can get proficiency, but I wouldn’t recommend focusing on strength rangers and Druids.
Clerics can use the weapons but they’re not the best at utilising them
looking at this what i am getting is infernal is devils and iss like the most common fire resistence and stuff and the others are demon heritage and abyssal are more chaotic and freaky looking and chthonic are more like creepily pretty kinda uncanny?
those are the general physical features in the context of d&d's official setting. You can decide to follow those guidelines or go your own way
up to you
character looks are always up to you ultimately
is there anything abt the three subraces that is like super important? not just physically
Apart from the mechanics (arguably), I don’t really think so?
scroll down to "Tiefling Traits", there it lists the mechanical differences
outside of that not really
2024 edition has been cutting down on the importance on sub races if I recall right
anything important story-wise about them would have to be consulted within the scope of the world your DM is using
ok i might just be overthinking it then
If you are looking for mechanical synergies, being able to cast Hold Person as a fighter, and then action surge attack the enemy while they are Paralyzed, is a deadly combo
The Hold Person coming from Abyssal Tiefling
yeah i was thinking abyssal which i saw had poison resistance
you guys were very helpful thank you!!
Happy to be of help!
If this question is better asked somewhere else please let me know, GM’s how do you organize your adventures and campaigns and such? I’m such a disorganized person I must force myself into some sense of organization to make sense of anything at the end of it all. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Shoot me a DM if you want an obnoxious mentee in the space.
#dm-discussion is where you go for dm help
For me, I put down important plot points, possible scenarios, important NPC’s, descriptions or some variation of the above depending on how much I’m prepping
Standard word document? Or what exactly?
I use my notes app lol
Damn, I don’t know if I could make that work, well… perhaps I could.
Oh I know some use docs and other stuff
I heard there were some websites too, but maybe ask that in #dm-discussion
Ope you have
What’s everyone’s favorite dnd book weather it’s for DMs and or for players, I’m looking for my next book to buy
(I have the players handbook, dungeon masters handbook, xanathars guide to everything, monsters of the multiverse and Tasha’s cauldron of everything) but if one of these is your favorite please do still feel free to share why 🙃
probably the phb, because its the base book you need for the others. Otherwise its my own homebrew folder (kinda cheating but yk)
whats an avrae?
thank u
Uh how do i create a character can i create it with help of a bot?
Check out the website D&D Beyond, that's got a character creator with guidance available.
dnd beyond is a great website to use if a beginner.
thank u so much im really new actually haha
Try having a read through the first couple of sections of the Free Rules to get a grasp of the terminology, then have a go at putting a character together for practice.
You'll need to pick a class, species and background. Let us know if you have any questions!
tysmm
im in character creation there is no barehanded weapons?
like spike knuckles or gloves of the sorts?
Nope
But you could reflavour light hammers or play a monk
Also gloves aren’t weapons
Im a monk
oh
Don't worry too much about that right now, this is just going through the steps to practice putting a character together.
ohh okay
Mr smith is it okay if u help me out through this with vc if its fine?
its okay if u dont want to
Monk
Dart in and out of melee while striking fast and hard
Monks use rigorous combat training and mental discipline to align themselves with the multiverse and focus their internal reservoirs of power. Different Monks conceptualize this power in various ways: as breath, energy, life force, essence, or self, for example. Whether channeled as a striking display of martial prowess or as a subtler manifestation of defense and speed, this power infuses all that a Monk does.
-# Suggested Standard Array assignment
Str. 12
Dex. 15
Con. 13
Int. 10

its fine thank you for the help so far i finished creating my character
Great! #character-discussion is always open if you want to share what you've made and get some feedback.
alright will do thankss
Hi! Just wanted to get some advice, I haven't gotten to play DND in years and want to get into it again, but I can't seem to find an open campaign that works with my character. Any advice?
Ah. Sometimes it's advised to make a character after finding a game for this reason. What is it about the games you're seeing that don't suit your pc? (Player character)
The problem is that I can't find one semi modern. My character plays a magic powered guitar (so basically electric guitar)
Semi modern is a bit harder to find. Ebberon setting is a little more technology advanced and has magi-tech (artifices), including trains and climbs. So a guitar might not be out of place. Other games might allow it as it might not really be too out of place- a magic guitar instead of electric. It depends more on if the DM feels this is changing the mechanics (so is more powerful than a normal lure) or really doesn't fit the aesthetics of the world
Hi how do I create a character
DnD beyond ain't working
What isn't working? The website itself? Or does something not make sense?
Thank you so much!
The website just freezes when I tap create character and the app doesn't even let me log in
When all else fails, you could use the srd pdf, which has all the basic rules:
https://media.dndbeyond.com/compendium-images/srd/5.2/SRD_CC_v5.2.1.pdf
Ok thanks
Could also have it where the guitar might look more like a usual lute/guitar of the setting, but your character uses it like an electric guitar- keep the rockstar vibes, but nudge the aesthetics if needed to fit the world- always worth chatting with the DM! (Also I mean look at the bard artwork in the 2024 handbook- she's a rockstar for sure)
To calculate stats if you don't have dice, you can use Google dice.
Thank you!! This advice helps me a lot!
What I meant was that I can't even create a character to play with
I know! I just meant for the regular character sheet. Just saying in case you don't have dice😅
Np! So sorry for the confusion 🙏🏼
Just as little tip it's highly advised not to roll stats before joining a game. Use standard array to see how you could put your character together. But you may find you'll need to redo stats when you join a game.
But almost no DM will accept rolled stats that were not rolled in front of them.
As someone who might soon a DM, what do you throw at first level players besides goblins?
I usually look at anything from CR 1/8 to 1/2 that fits the adventure I'm going for.
First level characters are quite fragile, so I usually don't throw anything higher unless I have experienced players.
As for how many creatures at tier 1 (levels 1-4), here's a rule of thumb I like:
An encounter might be deadly if the sum total of monster challenge ratings is greater than one quarter of the sum total of character levels. A single monster may be deadly if its CR is greater than the average of character levels.
I have a question, I've already applied my character skill proficiencies from Noble Background and Paladin class. My Human species lets me select 1 more proficiency of my choice. Reading the descriptions from the book, am i meant to choose something that i think is generally useful or fits my character? I know the answer will likely be "up to you", but I imagine certain skills are more commonly needed than others
Hi everyone, I hope this is the right section to post this in. Im new to D&D but would really like to get into it but I have no idea where to even start or to find a group etc. Is there anyone who could maybe message me privately and explain how to get started etc as I have no idea. It would mean a lot. Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you 😊 x
It's just how you suspected, in that it's up to you.
And yeah, sure, some skills are more common, but that actually depends quite a bit on the DM, since they are the ones asking for skill checks when the situation warrants it.
If you would like suggestions, the ones I have seen often are: Investigation, Persuasion, Perception, Athletics and Insight
Usually you pick something that's more useful, flavoring is free and you can roleplay however you want regardless of your skill proficiencies
Persuasion, Religion and Intimidation are good ones
Welcome! You can check out the pinned posts, especially this starter resources post here: #dnd-newcomers message
For group finding, #find-a-game explains how it works here.
The general advice I have is to first look at the rules and get a basic understanding of how the game works, then start looking for groups that advertise that they are welcoming to newer players.
You have my thanks
What is a westmarch style of gameplay?
Typically a community of players, often with multiple DMs. Parties are formed on an ad hoc basis ("anyone free now?" or "game at 5, tick the signup sheet if you can make it") for individual adventures. The game world may or may not evolve as each adventure is resolved.
Oooh, I see
"Well, we would have gone the short way but someone blew up the bridge last session so it's wilderness encounters en route for us."
So in a way, it is kinda like a multiplayer world when everyone can do adventures and actions will have consequences for future
Yeah, pretty much.
Thanks for explaining :3
This is the first time I heard about it, but sounds interesting
Pros:
- tend to be flexible with availability
- one world, many parties
- often expanded with downtime activities and off-job RP
Cons:
- not all DMs are the same
- harder to progress an individual character's story
- due to the mix & match nature of the player base, quality is not guaranteed
So Im new and really want to get into a game ive heard online play is an option just dont know how to go about accessing the website/app/materials for it if anyone could help

Hopefully some of the above resources can help! Usually it's done through a VTT (virtual table top) like Roll20 or D&D Beyond's Maps, or through text and voice only using methods like Discord + dice apps or even on forums.
I have D&D beyond how does one go about accessing a campaign?
Check the listings in #looking-for-players for games that want people, read the details, respond as appropriate and cross your fingers.
Type /looking and select the option for #looking-for-dm to advertise yourself as a new player in search of a group. Be sure to include your regular availability!
There are other Discord servers where people gather for games. You can find them in #looking-for-community .
Aside from here, you could also try LFG areas in sites like Reddit, Roll20 or the D&D Beyond forums to get started.
If a DM is hosting a game they can share a campaign link, which you can use to access their game. Such games might be text and voice only. Or might use Maps or another VTT to show visuals.
Ah so after a quick read overall it takes players just voice chatting or something and playing together and not needing an actual platform to log into itself they just make it easier
Alright thanks a ton guys ❤️
Depends on the game, yep! Some VTTs have a lot more bells and whistles and are really cool (Foundry, some pro versions of Roll20) and make require you to login to a dedicated platform. Others are more simple.
heyy, i have never played dnd and i want to start with my friends, any tips or maybe explanations?
hello i never played dnd, i am trying to play a solo game rn. but i would love to find a dm or even a party to play with
For finding a game (I don't know the bot command...) #dnd-newcomers message
(info on some self guided, CYOA modules if you want to play around with them a bit. Optomized for levels 2~3, or can use the provided character sheets )#dnd-newcomers message
I'm having some trouble understanding tool proficiency
So you can buy/use any tool, but if you are proficient with that tool category, you can apply your Prof Bonus to the roll using that action + your modifier for the skill that the action draws from (let's say deception for Sleight of Hand using a deck of cards)
I have a skilled feat that lets me choose between 3 skills or 3 tools to be proficient in. Is it not always better to pick the skill? Since Proficiency bonus only applies once, and using a tool still draws from a particular skill, it seems very limiting to be proficient with a tool rather than the skill the tool is used with. Especially since skill proficiency can come up in other game actions
am i missing / misinterpreting something?
It's not quite like that.
It's important to understand there there is no such thing as a "skill check" under the rules.
What you're actually doing is making an "ability check" and then you get to add bonuses.
Sometimes both a skill and a tool proficiency might apply to the same ability check, in which case you add your proficiency bonus and you gain advantage on that check.
the command is ?looking just FYI
then on another note, unless you start out with that tool, isnt it a gamble to pick proficiency with a tool that you are gonna have to buy/find in some way? Obviously the DM could help in that, but i have trouble seeing the value
also i understand one could argue that i might never end up in an ability check that asks for the abilities i am proficient it. But that seems harder to avoid
2024 wise, using a tool generally requires an accompanying ability check
if a specific skill is called out as part of that check, it works like this:
- if you have just the skill or just the tool proficiency: you add your proficiency bonus
- if you have both the skill and the tool proficiency: you add your proficiency bonus and have advantage on the roll
- if you have expertise in the skill and the tool proficiency: you add twice your proficiency bonus and have advantage on the roll
- if you have expertise in the skill, but are not proficient in the tool: you just have twice PB
Examples: picking a lock with thieve's tool uses Slight of Hand and Thieves tools, perfmorming with an instrument uses both
So as a baseline I agree with you that skills end up being used more often than tools, but it's also a matter of your actions as a character.
If you insist on using your thieves tools to open locks, few DMs are going to demand that you make a sleight of hand check instead.
And usually, you can buy stuff in the Players Handbook relatively easily (assuming you have the money) if it seems reasonable in the game. Unless the DM has set out some special rules.
you make a slight of hand check as part of using the thieves tools on the lock
A Lock comes with a key. Without the key, a creature can use Thieves' Tools to pick this Lock with a successful DC 15 Dexterity (Sleight of Hand) check.
- SRD 5.2.1
Well alright, bad example
thanks for this analysis btw
What I mean was, if you have a tool and its proficiency, you can try to solve problems with it. It would be poor form for the DM to not let you make a tool check.
Doesn't mean that some of them still won't do it, I have seen it.
I mean, if you try to use Weavers Tools to open a door, I probably wouldn't let you. But something cloth based, sure
Yeah, and the tools do have added suggestions on what they could be used for, which is nice.
so say as an example, i dont normally have a starting instrument
but i could pick a proficiency in musical tools with skilled, and get the Musician feat off of my human species to then throughout the campaign find an instrument and the opportunity to spread Heroic Inspiration to the party when i wouldnt have otherwise?
I wouldn't use spreading heroic inspiration as an example, as that is a concrete mechanical benefit that tool proficiency alone doesn't convey. Unless you're referring to a specific class fearture.
Instrument proficiency is used very rarely in my experience. A lot rarer than tool proficiency.
Musician is a feat that allows you do do tha after a rest
Ah then all good
it also confers proficiency with 3 instruments so you wouldn't need to take skilled
actually bad example since musician does give proficiency with 3 instruments on its own, so skilled picking an instrument would be a waste
Outside of the musician feat, Instruments are more of a role play device. They don't give any actual mechanical benefits
Maybe you'll have situations where playing music would be helpful and so they'd come up, but that's very much going to depend on the game and specific encounters
in that case could i have a suggestion for a generically useful origin feat for paladin?
Magic Initiate
Though is never wrong
Oh but don't get me wrong, musician is one of the strongest origin feats in the game. But just the heroic inspiration part
depends, what sort of paladin, what weapons, what are you intended to do over the course of an encounter or out of combat?
Tough is always useful
It's my first attempt so while the lack of cantrips in Paladin did make me interested in Magic Initiate, i was worried it would put me into too deep a rabbit hole with all the potential choices and swapping it could lead to
Although Magic Initiate's spell choices can be swapped, they don't need to be. You can pick the best ones off the bat and stick with it
I think that's how a majority of people use the feat if I'm being honest
Hey guys group of friends who are new want me to DM for them (new to DM & 2024) is there a VTT with a module already built in I could use for a mini campaign to see if they like it that requires minimal setup?
You can buy adventures on Roll20
Or some shorter adventures on DMsGuild for Roll20. Not sure if there's any free options
Yah idc about the price just want DM prep to be minimal so I can focus more on them
Roll20’s “The Master’s Vault” might be close to what you’re looking for? https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/module/40/the-masters-vault
Close but was hoping for something 2024
I think you’ll have to grab one elsewhere, then, as Toskr suggested.
🙏 ty all for your responses
Im new to DnD, i select paladin for the first time.
Everything going smooth.
There is a REALLY big threat, i want to pray to my god.
DM says "You can't feel your god"

It's probably finnneee
Hii!
Hey I’m new here and to DND, it is a little overwhelming but I used to play about 10 years ago. I forgot a lot but really looking forward to starting hobbies I like. If anyone has any advice pls lmk 🙏🏼
My advice would be read the basic rules, you can find them on DnDbeyond
I read over those. I guess I develop a character next?
Yup! The Basic Rules have a step by step guide on how to put a character together
You should try calling your God. She's probably mad at you for ignoring he rcalls.
Okay after I develop a character what do I do? Look for games already? Any one off games you guys recommend. I’m solo but would like to practice before playing in a group setting
yes, always worth looking at the #looking-for-players channel
UPDATE
HE IS DEAD

Unless you're sessions deep into your campaign, and already can handle yourself quite well, your DM is a prick. Pardon my French
Maybe find a table first
Can always create a character but some tables don't allow certain things
Is the human trait of +1 to all stats outdated? I swear i saw it online and in a calculator i was linked to a day ago, but i dont see this referenced in the Player's Handbook for 2024 5e
Cool. Anyone have any suggestions for pbp?
It's outdated, yeah. The current human gets different ||(much better)|| traits.
yes, they changed from the ability score bonus from the character race to the character background
A fair point from Tigers, as well. No species grant ability score increases anymore at all. It's all from backgrounds.
I got invited to a 3.5 rules game. Is it hard for a begginer? I only ever checked 5e before?
3.5 is a bit more complicated and math-heavy, but I would not say it is much harder
Hey guys I need somehelp I have been texting a lot of dm's getting invited to servers it is a lot of hassel and I have just not played a single second of DND does anyone have any recommendations for where to go looking for a group to play with. I just want to start at lv 1 with a group of friendly people and have fun... plz help
Unfortunately, finding a game that works for you is the hardest part of DnD. You've got to cast a wide net. You can also check out this amazing search guide from server regular, iamrazorwing:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1rjwuod1lNBM5n4X_TH2ZoqTULv53jWaVMXtrzKVboms/edit?tab=t.0
Hey thx for the advice
I have a question about characters, as long as they survive or aren't part of perms campaigns where they die, are they allowed to be used in other campaigns as well?
There's nothing really stopping you
Usually you want to have a character made specifically for each campaign, but as tigers mentioned not much stopping you
The DM may not accept them if they don’t fit the world tho
That's perfectly fine, I'll just need help making the new characters
We can do that!
Like I can come up with names, classes, all of that stuff, but appearance and personality outside of whether they are chaotic, neutral, or lawful, I suck at
There's no rule against using a character you've already created in another campaign, but it's generally considered to be taboo. At the very least, you should reimagine that character each time, and create them as if they lived in the world of this new campaign their whole life. Your character needs to be at the same level as everyone else in the campaign, so if you're starting over from level 1, it doesn't make sense if your character is an expirienced adventurer from another plane of existance
Oh of course. I don't really have much of a background for the character anyways so it's pretty easy for them to meld into other situations unless the race and class I choose don't fit
The best practice is to create your character after you join a campaign, since you can tailor their backstory and motivation to fit that world and story.
Yeah I get that, to be fair I only created this character as a prototype, as an introduction of sorts
I will probably want to use them in my first campaign and then from there I will make characters that fit campaigns I've already joined
Hey guys, i'm new to Dnd but i'm interessed and i'd like to find someone to play with and can help me learn.
If you haven't already, I'd say read the basic rules on D&Dbeyond (there's also the #learn-to-play channel you could look at) then once you've done that look at #find-a-game and #looking-for-players
Oh, ok
Welcome
I'm new too and am having my first job tonight
Where would I be able to join games by chance?
I'm looking to join a campaign on Mondays if possible.
Your first...job?
#looking-for-players or #looking-for-dm is the place to go.
Oh, your first session.
What happens after you get invited to the server?
Its just like a lot of introduce your character to our lobby and fill out this form. Damn I jusst want to play dnd I don't want to write an entire essay on my character and its back story just to get denied and say it is not acceptable for our world.... Honestly I just want to play a lv 1 ranger and adventure is it so hard?
You don’t have to write and essay for a backstory, and i recommend asking your DM about the world before you make them
also consider making a #looking-for-dm form outlining what you want
I did and it was just weird man
I still don't have a background for my character but it's been accepted for the session I'm gonna be in later tonight :3
No traits or anything have been added cuz me dum and don't know what to add
backstory or background, because those are 2 very different things for a dnd character
Uh, backstory is what I meant
Unless that session is session zero, I recommend trying to get some grasp of your character’s past in the world
I think it's a one shot job session for a larger campaign
Oh that makes more sense
Yeah cuz they have a job board and everything but on DNDBeyond it has me as part of a campaign
That does sound odd. Backstory varies from player to player. Though some DMs might want more to fit their world. I personally do not require it, though if you can create one or two sentences to put your characters reason for being in context it can help. It can be simple. There are some one shots in the #looking-for-players . Don't give up. You will find a good fit.
Does anyone know about any subraces for goliaths in the 2024 edition?
Cloud, Fire, Frost, Hill, Stone, and Storm giant
Thanks. The internet wasn't giving me a straight answer, lmao.
Np
so on the character sheet, so I write "frost Goliath" or Frost Chill Goliath" ?
I just write Goliath (Frost)
oh cool. thanks again.
Any of these work tho
It gets the point across
Is regular (nonPbP) DnD similar to text rp?
The rules should be the same, it’ll just be faster paced
Since you’re actively in a sessions talking with the DM / fellow players.
I guess combat is more like that of turn based rpgs tho?
D&D combat is turn based yeah
Is there any background that would fit a Goliath Warrior who was captured as a child and forced to fight in an arena? I know there's an official "Gladiator" background, but that's for the "entertainer" aspect. It doesn't fit with what Im trying to do.
I guess that's the part I'm worried about
Gladiator is just a variant of the Entertainer background, the actual flavor is up to you. Assuming you’re making a 2024 character just pick one that has the ability score increases you want + the origin feat you want.
Apparently, it gives you the acrobatics and performance skills. Plus an instrument and a disguise kit.
A lot of skills can be changed out, especially if you take them somewhere else
Pretty sure duplicate skills can be changed out
As far as I'm aware, that was only a rule for backgrounds in 2014
It's not a rule for any other duplicate skill profs unless the feature specifically says so (which is rare)
Yeah, that's what's confusing me. Im on the dndbeyond site right now, and it doesn't specify how to mix and match. Plus, this is my first sheet (hooray) and I barely know what Im doing.
I’ll have to check the BR in a sec
I would just pick a background that gives you something you want for now
Wait, can I tweak backgrounds? Like, can I just use the soldier background but don't give myself a rank and/or specialty?
In 2014, yes (and for duplicate background skills regardless, even if you aren't customizing otherwise). in 2024, only if you use the custom background option in the DMG
Yeah just checked to confirm
I’d ask your DM for a custom background if nothing fits, otherwise look for what background has the asi/origin feat you want and reflavor
I don't have a DM right now. I was told to start practicing and getting myself comfortable with all the rules and stuff. Plus, all the videos on youtube said a good place to start is to make a character sheet. Should I get a DM first?
You can make characters for practice. Just be aware you'd need potentially need to adjust when you do get a DM
Where exactly can I find a DM online? Just on "find a game"?
On this server, yes
(As a separate note, you don't need to ping on every reply for active conversations. You can turn that off by clicking the @ON symbol in the right when replying)
i have a friend who plays dnd, and has run and been a part of several campaigns himself, however he is on a hiatus rn. he played in person a lot, but is there anyway to join/ run a campaign online? and how does that work?
There are a variety of ways to play online
On this server, you can see who's looking for players in #looking-for-players
Let's see if I can remember this command today
I’m trying to find someone or more to play d&d with. So I can maybe join?

Well, that would be a no on remembering the online tips command. But the above isn't a bad place to start regardless
Are you talking to me?
Hey so i was wondering, does someone mind explaining to me the basics of like, rolling dices for stuff like checks or initiative? Im new to dnd and starting as a DM for a chill friend group campaign but i just havent played a DND campaign nor hosted one ever, so i dont really know how the dices work or when to use them, shits confusing and brain isnt braining enough to understand
Welcome! I’d have a look at #learn-to-play as well as this channel’s pins, both of which have a bunch of useful newbie links including to the free Basic Rules. I suggest making a practice character as you flip through, since it often aids the learning process.
Don't feel pressured to memorize everything, take it at your own pace and focus on what you want to do (e.g. no need to read every spell description, or every classes' mechanics if you don't plan on playing one)
Also feel free to ask any specific questions you have here, we’re always happy to help! :)
Can someone who knows the player rules and DM rules educate me on how things work with dnd beyond if possible can they dm and possibly vc me cause I'm just getting into dnd
I'm looking at doing a homebrew as an oni
If you’re new to D&D I highly don’t recommend homebrewing
Otherwise the resources in my message above to Bell have everything you need to start out sans a group to play with
Hi everyone, i want to try be a DM which "DM Starter kit" do you recommend?
How do I get permission to say something in #looking-for-dm
Type /looking-for dm
no one can type in those channels.. you type the command in a channel you can type in (like this one) and it will post the template to that channel
thank you.
Making a character is my brick wall I run into at 100 miles an hour
Is there something in particular you’re having trouble with?
its just overwhelming with all the bonuses from class, race and background
Hi
hi
Hi
Hi I'm new to D&D and I want to get in it, but I can't understand the character sheet, so I was wondering if anyone can give me a walkthrough of how to create a character

jocats crap guide to dnd (and reading thr phb. definitly read rhe phb and dmg) are how i learned
Okay, thanks
Hi could anymore help me a character I'm new and don't understand all the sheet parts
Sure! First, are you in a campaign and do you know which rules you’re using?
Second, what have you got so far on your character, and are you using dnd beyond or on paper or some other medium?
Not currently and I'm not to familiar with the rules I don't the basics but not really past that
For the purpose of this practice character, let’s use the newest 2024 rules, is that alright?
That's fine
Very well
And this?
I made my character sheet but idk how to play the game
Nothing yet just Haven't wrote it down but ik what I want in class race and that kinda stuff
Read the first-
Wait send the character sheet here so we can tell you what you did wrong (if any)
So are you using dnd beyond or some other method?
How do I send it
Il use dnd beyond
Did you make it on dnd beyond?
No i wrote it on paper and now I have the images on my phone
Aight
Start doing that, and tell us when you first experience a roadblock
Umm…
Ok what are your stats?
That’s smt many people mess up when they don’t know the game
Can i send it to you through a private message?
Sure
I sent it
For backgrounds can u tell me if this is a good one im thinking of making a sin/Beelzebub who has been casted out of hell and lost basically all of his power idk if it's good or not
So background and backstory are two different things
Some DM’s I feel would consider that too main-character esque, but that’s an idea.
And yeah that’s a backstory, not a background. Important distinction.
Oh mb
Background is pre-selected options with skill proficiencies and other things
The bsckstory is cool, some dms may just say you were a generic powerful fiend tho
Alr
lfg new player tryna get active in sum games
@hearty blaze ive got a starting sheet so far i thinks its ok for now
Hey, I have question.
I have answer
I plan on playing a Rogue for my next campaign, and my rolled stats are: 11, 14, 18, 13, 12, 11. How do you suggest I arrange them?
11, 18, 14, then your choice of the last three
I’d put the 11 in intelligence personnally, but if you want your rogue to be an investigator don’t do that
The most important thing is pumping as much Dex as you can as a rogue to improve your stealth and damage, and having an ok constitution stat because dying is bad
I see. And what modifiers do I recieve as a Rogue?
You don’t get stat modifiers from your class
Oh. Where do you get them then?
In 2014 rules, your species
In 2024 rules, your background
Ok i'm just gonna ask a wild question
Then expect a wild answer
What's the weirdest idea for a homebrew warlock patron you have?
The concept of entropy
Share more, I'm expecting this to be good
If not that, the collective subconscious of those who died dishonourably personified into the Lost Banshee
Oh they hate themselves. All their patronees (what’s the term?) are there to try and reverse causality and restore order to the world to delay the heat death of the universe
Is that wild enough or should I go wilder
Sounds like a clockwork sorcerer plus a concept for a fiend warlock i found online
The patron is a fiend/demon trying to redeem themselves and become a celestial, so they find warlocks to give magic to and do good deeds in their name
Btw this doesn’t sound like a newcomer question lol
No, I'm pretty much a noob
I’ve made my character sheet but none of my friends want to try out dnd with me 😔 is there anyway I could join like an online party that is like a newcomer group like me? (I’m a player, not a dm)

Yep, wild alright
thank you I’ll definitely try these out!
Checks out to me.
I got the D&D online oc format, can somebody give their oc format as an example
im lost
Would it work?
Yooo guys wsp
^
Please T-T
Are you looking to make a character for play?
yey
I believe i've learned every basic beside making a oc to play
Kinda like how ppl read the terms and conditions of a game before making a user

Pick a class, species and background.
Yeah i read this T-T
no like where's the sheet
and if so, I need somebody to give their as an example
Start with a class, I'd say
Species and background are just modifiers and extra functions. Class is your main playstyle
Most ppl say to start with a martial but honestly just play what you want
backstories don't have to be tragic
BUT you need to have a catalyst
Why did your character start adventuring?
"Because Mike Tyson was the youngest of 9, and he wanted to prove he was the best"
Backstories CAN have tragedy but don't be edgy for the sake of being edgy
It has to actually affect your character
@wheat oxide
It mostly uses medieval fantasy settings, if that's what you're asking. There are also settings like Eberron that are more futuristic, but still with a fantasy bend.
To go with this I like to include at least a sentence that involves their background to include it.
Eberron?
Eberron embraces swashbuckling action and pulp adventure while adding a layer of noir intrigue. It uses magic like technology, so there are trains powere by elementals and magic items are abundant. Give it a google!
Thx
Hello I am very new to DND and wondered where should I start and how to set things up?
do i need gunpowder horn for guns?
Hey there! You can get started here: #dnd-newcomers message or check the #learn-to-play channel.
Try having a read through the first couple of sections of the Free Rules to get a grasp of the terminology, then have a go at putting a character together for practice.
You'll need to pick a class, species and background. Let us know if you have any questions!
Usually you just need firearm bullets, found here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/equipment#AmmunitionVaries
Whats the best way to find a group? as a person who has no idea about this world etc

Hello everyone im kinda/sorta new to dnd I made a character sheet of my character i wanna try to use still working on his background to show how the character was made and what he will be doing for the party
background or backstory?
What was their early life like?
He had a haunting life growing up, there was a apparition that haunted him revealing secrets of the shadow fell and forbidden magic
Im shooting for a necromancer build for this character
that could work, don't be too specific, you kinda want to keep things vague at the start that way you and your DM build on it as time goes on.
Ok sounds good ty
He's a dark elf haunted one wizard which is why I was shooting for necromancer 😀
Are you gonna leave the origin of this haunting being to the DM? So they can choose to address its cause or not
Okay, so, "childhood is something that happened to other people. I knew only the dark."
Hello all! I am a new dnd player and want to immerse myself into this new adventure and fantasy world. My problem is that I am too new. Like I have recently purchased the "Welcome to the Hellfire Club" starter pack and I barely understood. I have refered back too videos (trust me like about 50+) and the guide books (free versions) but they seem too confusing. The main advice I got from all the videos is that for me to truly learn how to play is to actually start by finding a party to play with and the guide books are only there to refere back to. I am looking for a party to play dnd with (and grow with). I know I am new to the game but I am a quick learner and can be reliable. I was told that it can be scary to ask to join a party at level 1 (and I totally understand) but I am here performing a persuasion and hopefully can have someone to teach me around the ropes!🙏

Are you looking to play games in person or online?
online
Hello
hi
Im new to playing and don't really know where to start
have you read the basic rules?
Yes but its pretty confusing to me
what's confusing you?
guys why does different classes have different die?
Mostly the getting into character when starting out and figuring out what to do with them
Hey all. I guess I'm becoming one of you
Do you mean hit point die?
Idk what to even do. I've never played yet I've researched everything and even created classes and subclasses idk lmao
getting into character and figuring out what to do is something that you'll develop over time when playing, most first time players are nervous and hesitant when they start playing so I wouldn't really worry about that too much
It’s both a balance thing and a narrative thing. Barbarians are stereotypically tough and hardy so they get a beefy d12 hit die. Wizards on the other hand are stereotypically more frail so they get a d6
yes
Do you mean you’ve made characters or you’ve homebrewed custom game options?
Okay that sounds easy enough to build up confidence
ok
pretty much
I've done both on paper @wheat crystal I'm autistic and just deep dove into DnD without ever playing. So I researched a gazillion things and started making things. But again I've never even played
Okay thank you because I have a character already made on d&d beyond which gave me helpful tips on making them
Made 2 characters and 1 class with 3 subclasses
I wouldn’t really recommend homebrewing as a newbie. It’s a bit like trying to mod a balance patch for a game you’ve never played 😅.
Backstory, lore, all of that
It was more just about the fun of making it - not intended to use in a game. Again, I've never played lol
Of course, if you want your characters reviewed there’s #character-discussion and for homebrew review there’s #homebrew
If you wanted to find a group to play with there’s #find-a-game which has the server’s group finding instructions
I'm just saying idk how to start. Like what type of campaign/group to look for
That's good, have you looked at the #looking-for-players channel yet?
Homebrew doesn't include flavor right
It’s not typically considered homebrew no
Not yet
You might want to discuss any desired reflavors with your (eventual) DM regardless, in the event it clashes with the setting or themes of their game world for some reason
For example: wanting to play a sailor moon like character in a grimdark campaign
I went all out i made lore, features for every level and all the subclass features and their levels. I had a lot of fun. No clue if it would be balanced or anything, but it was fun to create
wait guys how many monster are there?????
In that case if you feel ready to try find a group, read the #find-a-game channel, then take a look at the #looking-for-players channel, although it make take some time before you find something you might think is write for you.
Okay thank you very much
np
anything can be monster?
I used friends and fables to make the characters and class, is there a better option? I know about DND beyond but don't I have to own the expansion rulebooks if I wanted to "create" a Dhampir on that website? Or does it unlock everything for character creation
why there are goat and crabs in monsters category in D&D Beyond
DDB only allows you to use the free options unless you pay for content or homebrew the details yourself
Monster is kind of a catch all term for creatures
Ok that sucks so even if I just want to join a campaign where they are using stuff from other books, I have to get the books myself to use DND beyond?
oh
Either that, or if someone else gives you access on DnD beyond.
In a D&DBeyond campaign if someone has a certain book and a Master tier content subscription they can turn on content sharing
Ahh okay so the DM could?
But we can't guarantee you'll get that
I see
For example, I don't have a DDB subscription, so even if I was running a campaign, my players would be out of luck for content. They would have to figure out that themselves (and to be honest, I'd expect them to)
If you'd like to share the class, feel free to post it in #homebrew !
Is there an alternative ppl use? That lets u make a character using things from other books? Aside from just writing everything down and making it myself
@wheat crystal how exactly do I share it
Anything that offers more than the standard free content without paying for it isn't legal
And so not something we can suggest
Where did you make it? If it's on a google doc or something similar you can just send the share link to the channel.
It's on friends and fables
Not sure what that is. If you can't share it directly then you can just copy-paste the text to a google doc and share it that way
Not really seeing a group that seems like I'd like
If you don't see anything you like right now, your options are to keep looking and see if something shows up, be the DM and make your own group, or look in other places.
That's ok, it may take some time before you find something that interests you.
Finding a group can be one of the hardest parts of playing D&D
Yeah seems like it 😁
It's a popular platform, but it's hard to say what "most" people use!
roll20 is one of the more common VTTs, probably not most though
can an aoe spell (take moon beam for example) that says it is 5 feet in diameter. do u have to stay within each square? or if two enemies are next to each other can i position the moon beam half in each square hitting both enemies?
I'm fairly certain Moonbeam is a 5 ft radius and should always be hitting both squares
While there's not really anything stopping you from doing that (at least to my knowledge), it will depend on your DM.
But in general, there's some variation in how DMs treat snapping AOEs to grids or not. The #dnd-rules probably has some decent breakdowns of the arguments if you search, but
is always safest

what is a vtt?
A virtual tabletop is a platform with varied capabilities: many handle maps and tokens, while others can manage music, dice rolls, character sheets, and more. Basically, they help facilitate play, usually online, but some folks use them for in-person games too!
Question natural weapon of a tail on shifter, with dual wielder can I technically use a scimitar for dual wield attack?
#dnd-rules would be the best channel for that question!
(But also no, you aren't holding your tail)
Generally speaking, what sorts of amenities or accommodations can a party expect to find in a small village? Something, say, a week's walking travel outside of the next major city.
Small tavern/inn, maybe a basic shop, smithy or shrine
Which cleric domain is recommended for Dwarves?
Whatever you want and feel is fun and fits with the kind of D&D game your group is running.
whatever comes in the free rules?
Life domain
The honest answer is whichever one sounds fun to you.
Stereotypically, maybe Life, War, or Forge
hi
Yeah i know close to nothing so far, i just downloaded bg3 and thought it'd be fun to get into d&d😭
I do actually want to get into it btw, not just an on-the-spot decision

Just a bit of a warning, bg3 has altered dnd rules and mechanics, which was done to make it easier to make it a video game
Yeah i guessed that
I came across a d&d podcast, and from what i heard, they're playing a sort of continued story, with arcs and stuff, are most sessions like that?, it's a long story built along the way rather than one new one after another?
yea, depending on the group/DM you could have one long story or multiple shorter stories in the campaign.
Nice, 2 last questions before i watch all those tutorial vids:
-
can you play with only 2 players?
-
Do you need to use the usual classes or can you use something other than warlock, cleric, rogue, etc.
Im just wondering if anyone would be able to give me any tips on how to find people to play dnd with online. Im just stuck trying to know where to look for people
- Yes you can play with only 2 players, although ideal you'd want 3-6 players in addition to your DM. And 2. You don't need to stick to the standard classes but I would recommend sticking to the players handbook.
DnD beyond forums, reddit, roll20 or through this channel’s #looking-for-players channel and typing /looking-for dm to make a form
Alr thank uuu
That’s assuming you want to play and not DM
Overall #find-a-game should have the info you need
np
Thank you I’ll have a look now
i really want to get into DnD but dont have anybody to play with or teach me so i i jus want to know where to find someone to help me
i dont know much i just know that it seems inetersting
#find-a-game has info on looking for games. If you haven't already I'd read the basic rules on DnDbeyond. If you have and feel ready to play, you'll probably want to look at #looking-for-players .
What's the difference between milestone and XP? (I know what xp is, but what's the difference)
where and / or how do i read the rules of DnDbeyond also i dont know what everything i need for this so do you know any webstie that has everything i need for the game (sry for any grammar mistakes)
Maybe #learn-to-play ?
Milestone is effectively “level up when the DM decides”
Typically they’d level you up after a certain number of sessions or after a major accomplishment like defeating a big boss
Yeah that sounds better ngl, ima choose that over xp
Milestone is when you achieve something important/impressive for your party and you'll level up together. XP has the chance of having players level up at different times as some players may achieve XP where others don't.
There's a link to the free rules in #learn-to-play
Usually your DM will decide the method. For now it doesn’t really matter what you choose
i think i found it thank you (this one: https://www.dndbeyond.com/begin/en / https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024)
Yup that’s the one
Im currently making my first character (he's a dragonborn sorcerer) and im adding spells, what blood-related spells are there? (If any)
I'm not entirely sure what you mean by blood-related spells.
I know there are a couple that require blood as the material component but I don't think that's what you're asking.
Like
You use blood as the source of your attack. Instead of a bolt of lightning or a tree's roots, you use blood
That sounds more like a Blood Hunter kind of thing, which is a class created by Matt Mercer.
Is it a new or old thing?
I dont wanna stray too far from what everyone else is doing
It's a fairly popular homebrew due to being accessible on DDBeyond, but a homebrew nonetheless, so I wouldn't count on it being available in a campaign unless the DM says so.
the Blood Hunter class has be around for at least 5 years. Although it doesn't do magic the same way.
If you're want to use blood as a source for spells, I'd say probably use blood as flair, rather than as part of the function.
Im just gonna stick with sleep and hallucination i guess
Probably best since it's your first character.
Is it viable for me to give the character legacy spells?
Also i've been planning this guy's entire story for a month
That would be up to your DM and if they want to use 2014 (legacy), or 2024 rules. Also the story your planning might not happen the way you want or things might change and you abandon that story entirely, just be aware as you can't really predict what'll happen in a campaign.
I wont worry, only the backstory is significant, he lost his memories and doesn't plan on regaining them 🙃 (unless i start a story with people that goes on for a few years lmao)
That could work quite well in a campaign.
Also I'm logging off for the now so I won't be likely to respond anytime soon.
Alr bye :> thanks for everything
np
Alright @frosty willow ! The best place to start is by reading the basic rules, linked both in this channel’s pins as well as in #learn-to-play
Hol
Feel free to make a practice character and ask questions as you read through
Did you have an idea of the kind of character you wanted to play?
Do you have a sheet prepared or a google doc link?
Namás only had the normal stuff written on it xd
I mean, I only have one text prepared xd
Mmm, let me find a character sheet xd
If you made the sheet on D&DBeyond you should be able to share the link to the character directly
If you made it via some other method like PDF you can upload the sheet to a trusted file sharing site like Google drive and send the share link to that
Mmmm I mean I literally only had the text written here lol
You can try pasting it to a google doc and share that
A okau
I wanna play dnd but I can't become a dm or even a great player. (My friends is also on vacation) so can anyone teach me the way of playing dnd?

Hi I’m struggling how to do my character creation on dnd beyond any help
How do u make a homebrew character in dnd beyond
What part are you stuck on? (and have you checked chapter 2 of the free basic rules which goes over the process of creating a character?)
I’ll check it out
If you're new to D&D, I'd suggest staying with the core rules for now. Homebrew should only be added/used with Dungeon Master permission to ensure it's balanced for their D&D game they are running.
My dm said I could make a character homebrew I just don’t know how
do you have an idea for a character
because if you have one it is a lot easier to come up with a homebrew according to that character
Homebrew is just an umbrella term for unofficial content, whether that be community made options, rule changes your DM makes, etc
I do
what is it
It’s pretty complex
do you have a class or species in mind?
A fighter who died in battle who’s soul wouldent except defeat and wanders around as a ghost and needs to posses people and to posses people i need to role a strength check to see if i can and if I do I get the body powers weapons and some or all of the stats of the person, everyone needs to role perception to see if they notice the check is a 13 for the party because they know me better and the check for enemies is a 15 or 16 and after I leave the body they are parlayed for 3-5 min or they are severely weakened (-1 to all stats or normal stats while in ghost form) ( I can posses 2 times per long rest and if I role high enough on a dex check I can go trough walls) ( people need to role a 6 or higher to see me and the party all ready sees me just incase)
Still, I don’t recommend homebrewing if you’re new. It’s a bit like trying to make a mod for a car if you know nothing about cars. Try looking at official options that can fulfill the concept instead
i would show that to your dm
This isn’t super balanced 😅
yeah
I know
try to come up with some ideas with your dm
I did
Try looking at the Reborn lineage instead
what species are you considering?
its a cool idea but I would work on the specific mechanics a little more
Me and my friends in dnd thought of a new species called phantom
So I’ve only ever played D&D as a player, but I’ve been curious about DMing.
i would look at some highly rated already made homebrew similar to your ideas and then compare them
Ok
adjust them to your needs if you dont like them
#dm-discussion would be a great place to ask for newbie DM tips! Otherwise in a sec I can pull up the new DM bot post
?tag new dm
What is a Dungeon Master?
- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.
How does it work?
- Learn how to be a Dungeon Master with this YouTube video or D&D Beyond article.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
Where do I start?
- Decide what kind of campaign you want to run. Here’s a few good options for new DMs.
- Get advice from your fellow Dungeon Masters in #dm-discussion and #dm-world-building.
do you have a campaign idea
Nothing huge, I had a couple one shot ideas but nothing I’ve written down.
But give me a prompt and I can probably come up with something.
first come up with the setting, or where the story is going to take place
i would suggest doing something small your first time
like a town/city with a cave full of monsters
Try running an official adventure, those often have great guidelines for pacing, encounter design, and many other things that aren’t super obvious
D&DBeyond has many free adventures. Of the free ones, I’ve heard great things from Peril in Pinebrook
^ I'd echo Star. Running the game and designing material for it are two different (but deeply connected) skills. I think you're better off getting comfortable running the game before you build stuff from scratch.
Thanks
learning dnd sucks
i never played it before but me and my friends wanna play it so im trying to learn how to become a dm
this is the least fun ive had in ages reading all those pages and forgetting everything 10 minutes later
the game seems so fun tho
the actual playing not reading 10 billion fighter talents that my brain is gonna get deepfried by trying to remember
The thing is, you don't need to memorize every battlemaster maneuver or whatever to play the game
You just need to know the basic rules, thus the actions and their consequences
and then you can know where rules are so when a rule is invoked you can go "oh that's here" and read the rule there
wdym by basic rules
I just wrote the description for my first character, it was a paragraph
But I didn't save...
I give up 😭
Hey
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, I recommend just learning how to make a character, basic ability checks, modifiers, core gameplay, classes and combat.
Free basic D&D rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
also this
The basic rules.
Like getting an idea as for what you can do on your turn, and knowing where to read for the specific info when you need to. Not having to memorize every single character option.
Read the first two chapters of this, I’d say
There's "How does the game generally function at its core", and then there's "In this class, this subclass, at this level, when you do this, you can do that"
thanks
You don't need to memorize what every class and subclass can do at each level and when, you just need to get a handle on the fundamentals so that other things start becoming self explanatory
ive played some improvised rpgs with some friends before, no system really just roleplaying and dice rolling so id say i kinda know the basics of how it should go
i hope
That'd be closer to narrative structure and the back and forth of players and whatever narrator role there was
As for D&D's basics and fundamentals, I'm talking the foundational mechanics. For example, how to determine your ability scores at character creation, and what those scores then mean later for determining how well your character does at things later.
oh yeah i struggled a lot but i eventually figured out how to fill a character sheet kinda
there are some things i still dont understand a lot but id say the very basics i got
What’s a skill check?
And then after "What do I put on the character sheet?" it comes down to "What does the stuff on the character sheet do?"
like if i need to climb a tree i gotta roll acrobacy
if im trying to see what weapon killed the dead body i roll investigation
Nice, and how does one calculate the modifiers for those rolls?
ur background and class and sometimes race gives you proficiencies u can pick on some things and those add to ur die
Fun fact: That was a trick question. Technically.
In the strictest sense, "skill check" is a misnomer. it's Ability Check. And Ability Checks can use a Skill Proficiency, such as Dexterity (Acrobatics) check, which is a Dexterity Check that also uses proficiency in the Acrobatics skill.
hello! im completely new to D&D although i have played arkham horror alot im not sure if they are to similar haha
Read up on the first few chapters of the free basic rules on #learn-to-play , and feel free to ask any questions you might have. Then, make a practice character and get it reviewed in #character-discussion .
Once you’re ready and got the fundamentals down, you can check out #find-a-game for information on how to find a group online. To make a post, type the appropriate command in any chat channel.
i use a portuguese version of the character sheet and the rules i read were in portuguese
Fair point
ability and skill dont have different words for them in portuguese
just abilidade which can mean both
That may become confusing since Ability scores / ability checks, and skill proficiencies, are quite different things
dnd is confusing enough
You're learning a new game - it will be confusing at first
That's okay - be patient with yourself.
Eventually it can just click and you'll start connecting the dots passively
thanks, im trying
it just seems overwhelming honestly like
every person that played rpgs that ive asked before always said dnd is the best to start with but damn this is not what i expected
was for me at first, didn't stop me from eventually trying to make an entire supplement later
Just keep at it and take your time
That's a bananas take! D&D is how a lot of folks get into RPGs, but I'd hardly call it the best starting place!
Feel free to ask specific questions - we can help answer those.
The free basic rules and Players Handbook have a glossary which is very helpful for learning terminology.
it wasnt like really my first first one cuz ive seen a lot of ordem paranormal before
the cellbit rpg system
its a lot simpler but it wasnt really what i was looking for ig so i went to dnd
also its really different from dnd overall and its meant to be played only on the ordem paranomrla universe
On the upside, learning D&D will give you a leg up on learning other systems, either because D&D inspired them and they function similarly or because they're more streamlined so other stuff will be fairly easy after tackling D&D!
yeah
In my first campaign my friends fed me to a pile of dead people's fingers that we collected and brought to life. Is this normal?
I wouldn't say so? But in a game of imagination, "normal" is an elusive target.
Oh
okay im back. so me and my party have decided to use a book that has a pre written adventure since were new and we decided on curriculum of chaos which from my understanding is magic school. but im now realizing i chose to be a fighter but fighters dont use magic and we are going to magic school. idk what to do
Ask your DM to let you create a new character? Or you could be an eldritch knight fighter at level 3, which does get a little access to magic.
i mean my character isnt official yet but i want to be a fighter
the only magic i find interesting is bard magic. i have a string desire to have a fun weapon. ive thoight abt being a arcne trickster rogue
There’s college of swords or Valor bard
Just what I was gonna suggest, Nugget!
whats a valor bard?
Bards that like weapons, pretty much
if im a valor bard can i have an axe thats also a guitar
thats my literal dnd dream
Ask your DM!
Id personally allow that, that is sick
Glad to hear it!
are the books with the stories a good purchase?
thats what we were planning to do but i domt wanna buy it if it isnt helpful
They can be hit or miss. Your table may not vibe with an adventure, and there's not necessarily replay value if you just have one group. But they are a good source of ideas, and if you're new, they're not a bad investment.
Personally I like the anthology books more than the long storylines
if you make or customize adventures, everything is inspiration.
the anthologies are great because you can shoehorn any of their individual parts into another adventure. or take a detour
Might be a silly question to ask, but as a newcomer I've been wondering, should I read the whole player's handbook or is getting the hang of the basic stuff, learn as I play the game and reading as needed and so on better?
You should read the first two chapters of the Free Basic Rules, I’d say
It's never a bad idea to read the whole book, but it's generally not necessary
Then learn the rest as you play, or in your free time if you want
Free basic D&D rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
Got it, thank you!
And if ya need help feel free to ask! We’re happy to help.
Does anyone know how to properly dm? I’ve been the dm once and I don’t think I did it right
Great! It was super fun, at least from the “fun” perspective.
We got stuck on the first floor on the dungeon
Ope
I’ll never feel the same whenever I hear someone say “click” ever again
One of my table mates got knocked,
/downed 7 times. He had it pretty rough.
Hi
Plus, if my DM wasn’t nice, I would have lost my first character to a dying exploding fire elemental.
Lmao
😂 Saying "oh crap I overtuned this trap/encounter" and pulling punches is a time honored DM tradition
Ope, I’ve been called out
Thank you so much
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
There were only 2 Nat 20s the entire time. One was a pretty lackluster wisdom check, but the other literally saved the party and let us go to the second floor. It was awesome, a bunch of the guys started screaming
Helll yeahhh
Trying to figure out how far away a town should be from the next "big" city.
I imagine there's a Kingdom of sorts in the area, with satellite cities nearby within, say, a day's travel.
How many days' travel (by foot) from one of these satellite cities do you think it would be until we start to get more into "small town" territory? (Think one inn, a tavern, a small shop or two, mostly fieldwork jobs for locals, etc.)
Or would the satellite cities be sort of "baked in" to the Kingdom, come to think of it
as a bard can i use a weapon in the beginning or do i neef to level up ?
When a dm says that the characters will be 5e og rules what does that look like in d&d beyond?
These are more #dm-world-building questions, but I think it's up to you. How do you want to handle travel? If you want it to be just skipped over montage style, then distances don't matter. If you want to actually roll for encounters (or whatever), then look at the travel pace (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game#TravelPace) and reverse engineer a distance from there.
You can use a weapon from level 1.
I would say it depends. A kingdom comprises many cities with the scale of big cities being important. Where I live, there are many villages 3+ hour walk from the major city. Those villages are agricultural to support the city
This is Hungary btw
That'll be the 2014 Core and Expanded Rules toggles on the first page of the character creator.
okay so i can have smth like a hand axe and then ince i level up i can start join the college or swords or valor or start multiclassing as also like a fighter?
Yeah, that makes more sense! I just realized I've been thinking of this more like a metroplex, with satellite cities and more rural towns outside of it, than I have like, a whole political landclaim.
It really depends on technology level and the food of the region. If I have a capital city that is near many fertile villages, it will be different than a desert port city
You probably should get some experience playing the game before you multiclass; it's easy to undermine your character's effectiveness if you don't know what you're doing.
But yes, you gain a subclass at level 3, so you could be Sword or Valor then. Bards have simple weapon proficiency, so you'd pull from this list: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/equipment#Weapons
thanks for the tips!
hey everyone! im totally new to D&D and have been really interested in it! Hope everyone has had a great holiday : )

thank you
if I can ritual cast Message, that means it'll take me 10 minutes to do all of the preparation required before I can send that message right? It's not exactly a spur of the moment thing?
Message is a cantrip, so it doesn't take a spell slot. There's no reason to cast it as a ritual.
I'm setting up a Warlock, and it says if I take Pact of the Tome, I can take 3 cantrips and two level-
oh, so just the Level 1 spells that I take would have the Ritual requirements then? Not the cantrips?
Yep. There are no ritual cantrips.
Only certain lvl 1+ spells can be cast as a ritual as well, it will specify as such in the spell generally speaking
sweet, thanks
on that note, is it a bad idea to take Pact of the Blade and Pact of the Tome?
I mostly want to be in melee with the magic-y blade, but I figure a Warlock would also want to have a handful of spells at their disposal.
2024 warlock?
yisyis
seems like there is nothing preventing you from taking both of them, so seems like its fine
nice, thanks c:

whats the reccomended level for 1-2 player game
Depends on campaign
Probably oneshots at level 1-2 though
Longer campaigns usually demand the full roster of 4-6
For a smaller group it’s more likely to just decrease the number of monsters than level up the party to compensate.
morning
hello
how is everyone?
its a merry day 😎 🎄
Hallo
How may we help ya?
good to hear, quick question what would you say is best starting campaign for players?
Like a pre-written campaign?
I don’t believe I understand your question, unless it’s talking about modules
yea like i get a lot like homebrews, but whats a good strong pre-written world for a newbie group you have
Lost Mines of Phandelver I heard has some pretty decent reviews
Heroes of the Borderlands is also prettty good
Unless you mean just the world and setting, then the Forgotten Realms
For modules tho, I’m probably the wrong person to ask cuz I don’t run modules
I’m confident at least someone in #dm-discussion could give you suggestions tho!

thank you for help
Happy to be of assistance
