They're wizards that can handle a a sword rather than fighters that know a few spells.
And absolutely do not put them front line, they will die often until level 10
They are amazing second line warriors
Keep away from strong winds, indeed
I thought it was just a joke, are wizards actually that frail?
it was worse in older editions but they're still fairly squishy
At lower levels, absolutely
At higher levels, still squishy
Depends on the level and the build
You can make wizards a bit tougher or you can absolutely make a wizard who will die from falling 10 ft
That is the most hilarious thing I've heard all day
I wonder if a wizard ever died to terrain or weather
I mean I've literally killed a wizard from them falling into a ten foot hole
In general that's less common outside of level 1 or very fragile builds
Help, can a cleric cast with a shield and a holy symbol ? Does he need a free hand ? What if the Shield is the holy symbol ? i dont understand
That depends on the spell. Your holy symbol counts as your spell focus, so it fulfills the material component of a spell so long as it doesn’t have a listed gold cost in the spell description.
Normally you need a free hand to cast a spell with a somatic component. If a spell has both a material and a somatic component you can use the same hand holding the material component to perform the somatic component.
So in most cases i will need a free hand and my spell focus in the other ?
Making a Shield wielding Cleric not viable unless i have the warcaster feat ? It says i can cast with shield and weapon in hands
The only case where you’d need a free hand with war caster is if you tried casting a spell with a material component with a gold cost, since your focus can’t replace that component
Depending on the holy symbol, you don't need to hold it either.
Shield wielding clerics are viable and pretty much the norm
Ohhh so either a Shield and holy focus (drop Shield it if Material is needed)
Or a weapon and holy focus ?
@loud pumice confused me again ?
Your focus can be on your shield
As before, having it this way effectively makes your shield your focus
thx for helping, pls make the explanation idiot proof lol, the rulings around that confuse me, since you can take feats to get around all that
And again it depends on the components of the spell you’re trying to cast if you need a free hand or not. Without War Caster you’d need a free hand to cast spells that have:
- a somatic component but no material component (e.g. cure wounds)
- a material component with a listed gold cost (e.g. revivify)
War Caster makes it so the 1st restriction is removed
didn't mean to confuse you, was saying that depending on the focus, like if you chose the emblem for your holy symbol, it can be on a piece of worn fabric or on a shield.
i always assumed you need to touch the symbol to channel your connection or something,
in practice a shield and mace wielding cleric is playable, and as Star of light said, i need to be carefull with "only somatic" spells and the material that is worth gold, correct ?
Clerics are unique in their spellcasting focus in that they don't always need direct contact with their focus.
It’s not just spells that only have a somatic component. It also includes V, S spells (e.g. cure wounds). So long as it has somatic and no material components you need Warcaster or a free hand
alright that helped a lot, thx so much

hi
how are things?
good, you?
cool
yea
How hard is it to make a mounted character in 5e, like a character that revolves around it's mount? There's this leauge of legends character named Kled that I think would translate well to dnd, but I just don't know where to start.
Mounted combat definitely exists in dnd, it’s just sometimes difficult to keep the thing alive
Im pretty sure there is a website that made league characters into dnd, a friend of mine played mordekaiser once, try googling it haha
I also heard Halfling on a Mastiff is a funny one
There are some builds that specifically revolve around it
It's probably be hard at the start because of the expense to get the mount, and later in game it would be a case of keeping it alive. Definitely possibly though.
theres a fighter subclass specifically for that actually
really
That actually might work with Kled's character tho. He's got this one mount named Skarl, its this weird lizard-bird thing that upon reaching low health bucks Kled off it's back and runs away. Acquiring Skarl is the trouble I'd think.
Of their choice or is it one in particular
like do all paladins get a horse or would i be able to get a skarl-equivilant
I do think Fighter is more along the lines of the path I wanna go down tho
Just has to be large and rideable
Cavaliers are really cool and I think they’re good. I would recommend that if you wanted to do a fighter.
Acquiring would almost definitely be the hardest part considering the creature you'd be looking for.
And Paladin’s Find Steed likely is the easiest way
Plus it’s renewable
Multiclass maybe?
You can resume on them
is large subjective at all? Because neither Kled nor Skarl are large, they're both rather short creatures that when put together form a decent height. but like if kled's short, is a medium sized lizard considered large for him or does it have to be univerisally considered large
Large is a size classification in dnd
Lemme see if they’d fit
Yeah looks more Medium to me
But hey, flavour is free
There are mechanics that revolve around size. Your mount must be a size larger than you. So depends on what size your character is-most mounts are large, but from your description, that sounds medium, so you’d probably have to go small.
Small is perfect for Kled, and I think Medium matches Skarl
Please correct me if I spew misinformation-I’m pretty sure it’s a size larger but I could be wrong.
No that's correct
The mount has to be at least one size larger, no?
me convincing my dm that skarl is large from my perspective, thus should be considered a large mount
Yeahhhhhh sorry
So Skarl would be able to ride them, yippee
Could dnd work in 2 people? 3 PC and a dm, the player has a normal character a sidekick type of character and a dmpc with the same power as the sidekick. Wanted to play with only my gf a campaign based around fat animals, where only we change the flavour of spells and stuff
It could work, but overall I don’t recommend
Honestly I think making character sheets revolving around characters from media sounds really fun, I may try that.
Caviler actually seems very interesting, I need to look at fighter as a whole but I think that's going to be the class + sub I go
Leauge of Legends is full of characters that are perfect for that. My first was based on this dude named Veigar, very short sterotypical wizard that grew in power in time.
I hate that lil gremlins stun
Oh I didn't know this
Server rules and TOS
it is in Xanathar's
Ty
I haven’t played, I’m not really a video game person, I’m more into creating my own stuff. Should I move this conversation?
Why? Can i make this work somehow? We really wanted to play just the two of us
Well, dnd is more social and is designed for more than 2, but it can work if yall really wanna
That’s generally just… not fun. If you want to, ig?
It can definitely work
Fair
Just, usually not as well as regular group sizes
But if both of yall wanna do it you do you
I will have to rebalance some encounters, but other than that, i think it will be ok ish. At least will give it a oneshot to see how it works
I want to join the dnd community and play my first ever campaign because it always seemed fun whenever I saw a dnd centred episode in shows but I'm nervous
i have a couple books if we can find more people. never dm'd before but i'm down to give it a go
Both of you guys should check out LFP/LFG
Hi nervous, I’m Nugget
And yeah, read through #find-a-game
What's that short of?
I'd love to do a pilot one shot session if this is what it's called to get used to it
Looking for players/games
Thank you that seems cool I hope I find the right group I heard it could either make or break your experience
don't let any bad experiences scare you away
ok I think I've got the solution for Kled. Cavalier multiclassed into a conquest paladin seems fitting for his character and will allow me to both get a mount and use it well
there we go i made a post eden
Please keep any game soliciting/organizing to the Looking for Game channels as it's off topic elsewhere
Part of Kled's character is that he's older than dirt, and he watched as the frontier where he once roamed free got taken over by civilization he got angrier and angrier, until one day he took Skarl and started trying to take it back. I think that's perfect for oath of conquest, multiclassing in or out of both paladin and fighter requires strength which is perfect for kled.
thank you guys for the help
hello
hi
im looking for a discord that has like a groop to play online dnd with
best chance for that from here would be look at the #looking-for-players channel
thank you
np mate
How to play
There are some great guides on dnd beyond and stuff.
Check out the d&d basic rules on d&d beyond
Thanks
I’m brand new today and I’m trying to research and learn more on where to start playing and knowing more about D&D I’m open to any and all help and tips
Reading the basic rules on DnDbeyond is probably best to start learning the rules, and as for playing look at the #find-a-game and #looking-for-players channels.
Thanks so much
np
In #looking-for-players if somebody says "5e", is that to mean the new or old 5th edition?
or is it impossible to tell without asking the person saying it because theres no consistency
this is the major problem with WotC calling them both "5e". for the most part, the new one is SRD 5.2e or 2024
You'd probably need to ask if they don't clarify somewhere in the posting
alright thanks
They are, however, very compatible. Even if using '14 or '24 class options, they can be run together. But in either case, much like with other books that introduced new rules or changes, like Tasha's Cauldron of Everything or Mordenkainen Presents the monsters of the multiverse, always best to check with the DM which books and options are allowed.
The term you're looking for is duet play. There's a whole website dedicated to it (https://dndduet.com/), and this Ginny Di video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5WH0yEY5uo8) covers some of the ups and downs of the format.
Ty!
Hii!!! Ive never played dnd before does anyone know the main basics i should remember (im not good at keepong lots of information for long 😭)
Try having a read through the first couple of sections of the Free Rules to get a grasp of the terminology, then have a go at putting a character together for practice.
If you want shortcuts, I suggest looking up a D&D cheat sheet, and combat action sheet.
Your character sheet can contain info for most of what you can do. I'd agree that cheat sheets can supplmement, and the best ones will be what you devise for your specific needs.
Alright tysm!
Ty!!
Hello!! I'm very new here, I hope I can find a group.
So I have a questions im quite new to dnd kind of a first timer here so if I pick the class artificier or whatever it’s called
Could I essentially be Batman but with guns and etc
I think it’d be a funny concept
I like that idea
Like just imagine in a medieval settings there’s a guy wearing black clothes and cape going “im Batman”
And just kind of gunning people away
Yeah you could definitely flavor bunch of their spells as utility tools very easily 😎
Though it will also require a DM who's fine with having a Batman in their (usually) fantasy game 😛
Wellll I mean that shouldn’t be a problem hopefully because it’s not exactly a home brew class and follows the rules
But given my scenario I’ll probably end up dming
That’s why I’ve decided not to go too heavy into the rules and etc right away and just get a feel of the game at the first
For the first campaign at least
Yeah Artificer is an official class, so generally that won't be an issue, and flavoring is simply describing things differently, while staying in the rules. For example describing the Fog spell as a magical smoke grenade instead of a spell makes no mechanical difference in the game, just changes the flavor 😎
Hello everyone im somewhat new to dnd I have 2 books on it and I have only just skimmed through but other than that 😅 I have no clue what to do and how to start and have no one to start dnd with I do have dice but not many.
Check out #learn-to-play for the basic rules and other useful resources 😎
Hello ladies and Gents, Quick question. I am not new to the world of DND although I am new to the Blood Hunter class. Any Class to compliment the blood hunter in a multi - class scenario??
If you can't get an answer here #character-discussion and #optimization might be the places to ask.
I myself am not that familiar with Blood Hunter
Oh thanks so much
hello im new, does anyone know how i can find a group
Try #find-a-game
Hello! I'm very new to DND and would like to know if anyone can help me figure out how to make a character sheet!
Sure! Do you want to make one online or on paper?
And what rules are you using (2014 or 2024)
probably online! And I'm not sure, whichever is more common, I suppose I don't know the difference
Let’s say 2024 then, cuz that’s where all the future content is going
I recommend using dnd beyond for online sheets
And as for the rules, read through the first two chapters of the free basic rules in #learn-to-play
Free basic D&D rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
or right here
Ahhh gotcha TYSM!!
If you’ve got any questions, feel free to ask!
Hello
One of my friend wants to play as a ogre cleric , is that allowed ? Since we are using the handbook we don't know any details about that race and buffs
Ogre isn’t a playable species iirc, there’s orcs and half orcs tho.
That is why we are more confused? We can be anything in dnd right?
Ogre was not in the handbook
You can, but ogres aren’t an official option. You’d have to homebrew it (make an unofficial version yourself)
Oh
So if we only go off official rules, no you can’t be anything.
K thx
There are lots n lots of homebrew options available at many sites.
I recommend DonJon 👌
I have an ogre character from an old 3e campaign, he's horrid and awesome
Lately they likened hide the fun stuff behind extra books, but you can always find cool stuff online
Can u explain how weapons work ? I am a Ranger , so many many weapons can I carry ?
Doesnt weight depend on if youre playing with it or not?
You can carry as many weapons as you can hold the weight of
Yes, but it’s the only reason-
I would not recommend telling people to pirate paid content on the official dnd server. It’s against server rules and TOS.
-# just saying cuz it would be a shame for you to get smited
The DNDwiki is still piracy, cuz it has info from books that need to be paid for
ohhh yeah dont mind me guys I didnt say anything
How much can I carry ? How do I determine that ?
Ask your DM, some don’t even track it
Thats poo.
K
So for my session we did last night I totally forgot how we did, I know it was a lot of math and tracking
We did math to find the amount of weight their characters could hold but I forgot what
Pain 😔
Ah yes, math and tracking can be overwhelming depending on the character and the items carried- that's why a lot of dm's eventually forego the whole mess
For my party, I often only bother if its a ludicrous amount, or if said item is stupid heavy with no logic behind it
I just go for a rough approximate.
Like, I’ll be lenient and let you carry a fair bit, but you can’t carry 16 greatswords, 72 muskets and 23 shortswords
Like a halfling carrying three tons of cheese.
Theres a consequence for that. Lmao
LOL when characters pick up every flipping item they come accross for no reason
Exactly
Do we start with any kind of gear ? Or start with basic and advanced to better ones ?
When you go through character building you get thigns based on ur background and ur class basics
You start with your starting equipment, which is based on your class and background
So my DM will decide that too?
You get to choose between (a) or (b) things
Assuming your campaign is using the base starting equipment, you decide
Based of predetermined options
Not all, but a good amount
Dm's role is pain
Yesn’t
Tbh I was at first but imma be honest, im out here playing with my aunt and uncle I dont need allat
Yupppp
It is... WHen your uncle is that guy that makes some op character rip
He wanter to be an elf, sorcerer, with the background as guide
That’s reasonable
Pretty strong too
It’s fairly standard, tbh
I was nervous. I didn't care about organization
Atleast that's normal, my friend wants to be a ogre cleric just cuz she wants a tall character, she decided to be a Goliath later
I dont really mean strong, more so annoying, he has the ability shield of faith I believe
Decent spell
I dont think ive come across an ogre cleric, nor goliath
😞
8 friends playing together, everyone wants to be elf
Mostly yes
Remember that you can use saving throws and break their concentration
My gf wanted ot be an elf too, I think for more younger people, or new people elf just seems to be compelling
Ogres aren’t playable
I know, im still working on all of that though as it was our first session
Anything is playable if you have imagination and a nice DM
That's why we recommend her choosing Goliath cuz all she wanted was a tall character
Zach is really optimistic
is she a munchkin
I've been a dm for many years, and I pride myself on allowing people to play as they wish, within functioning reason
Fair point, but I meant that cuz they aren’t officially playable I don’t find it surprising they have not seen one
This makes sense
What's a munchkin?
I mean irl is she short
Yea , she is obsessed with height
Poor thing, I gave up trying to be tall a long time ago
Lol
Haha
There is nothing wrong with being fun sized
Also a fair point
I got a similar remark when I was having fun with my Dwarf Barb
Me being proud of my Dwarf Barb
"Are you obsessed with the small races because you're small? I mean, I'm small, too"
Dwarf barbs are amazing
What is usually the lifespan of Changelings?
About the same as a human, less than a century on average
Alright so I guess 23 for my character would be decent?
Yup sounds fine!
I think I made a mistake
there is no Changeling Race in DnD Beyond character sheet
I don't see any at least
if you are on DnD beyond, changeling is paid content.
?books
There are four ways to access content on D&D Beyond that you may have in your physical books:
- Purchase the full digital book from the marketplace
- Purchase a digital/physical bundle from the marketplace
- Join a D&D Beyond campaign with someone who already owns the book where content sharing has been enabled
- Use the homebrew tools to copy the content from your physical book into D&D Beyond (Note: Do not publish any content copied in this way; it is for personal use only)
how do I calculate skill values such as Arcana, Animal Handling, Performance, etc?
you look at the associated stat, for example Arcana is typically an Intelligence skill. Take the ability modifier from that stat.
then, if you are proficient that skill you add your proficiency bonus too.
for example: you have +1 Intelligence and are proficient in arcana, so thats another +2 at level 1. for a total of +3
oh so it's all base +1, then you just add your bonuses?
so what if I have 19 Charisma
19 CHA is a modifier of +4, so for performance (a CHA skill):
you have +4 base, and if you are proficient, you add your bonus
the base is not +1, its whatever your ability modifier is
It would be +6 since your Proficiency Bonus is +2 at level 1
at level 1 with +4 CHA your deception would be +6, yes
oh I am level 3
Your PB would still be +2
still the same, the proficiency bonus doesnt change till level 5
I highly recommend you read the chapter I just linked
Your PB increases at certain character levels, as listed in your class page. Also here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game#Proficiency
Yeah I read those yesterday but I forgot about Ability Scores
It’s important to note that PB scales off of total character levels, not individual class levels. So an 8th level Bard and a Fighter 4 / Rogue 4 multiclass would both be considered Level 8 Characters and thus have a PB of +3
Are there any beginner friendly DnD campaigns that are looking for members?
There is no guarantee but you might find one on the #looking-for-players channel.
Thank you 🙂
So random question but like I’m super interested in playing but have a really hard time keeping up.
Mhm. What’s the question?
In RAW rules, if I choose a proficiency in the same skill twice, say once from character once from feat, what happens?
Nothing
I was under the impression from someone else that you get advantage from the second one
Nope
Ah. Ok
That’s a homebrew (custom) rule I’ve seen before, but it isn’t in the rules
Are there any tip y’all have for keeping up
Well, learn what matters for you. Learn spells of you’re a caster, for example, or just learn the mechanics or features your character can perform.
Take your time, and ask questions
- Take it at your own pace
- Try making a practice character as you go along
- You don’t need to memorize everything. A decent familiarity + the ability to look things up is better
- Past the fundamentals, focus on what you want to play. No need to learn how Wizards work if you want to play a Fighter, for example
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, I recommend just learning how to make a character, basic ability checks, modifiers, core gameplay, classes and combat.
If you’ve got a grasp of all of these, you should be able to keep up with most games
Alright thank you 😄
Hey, if a spell requires a specific object to cast, do I really have to have it or is that something I can just gloss over?
It gets easier, the more you play the more you realize there's actually a fixed formula behind a bunch of these classes
Like, for example, Shield of Faith requires a parchment of paper with text written on it to cast, do I need to have that piece of paper on itm
It might be able to be glossed over if you have a component pouch or arcane focus - unless the item is consumed in casting the spell.
Component pouch or arcane focus allow you to "override" the non-consumed materials requirement of the spell.
But as noted, consumed materials do have to provided
Hallo
Ooh, alright, that's a bit tedious.
I saw a spell that required a silver mirror on hand, and I was like, where do I find something like that in the wild??
I just get a staff (well, a harp cuz I’m a bard) and forget about it
Gooood morning afternoon evening!
It helps keep spellcasting in balance. That said, some DMs will handwave material requirements
You too
Oooh, alright then. Thanks!
But rules as written, if the spell has a component that gets consumed, you need to have that component.
The spells that require the consumption of a material component usually have that for balancing. Revivify is a prime example.
It also applies to spells that have a component with a specific cost, like Chromatic Orb, it doesn't consume materials but does have a cost on the material component so you would need that material component in order to cast it.
Hi I'm kinda new to all this. I've been interested in DND for years but not really had the chance to learn and play besides one time.
I would love to find a small group of other new/ish players and a very generous person to guide us through.
Or if there are any groups that play at regular times that wouldn't mind a noob in the party 😅
Welcome to the server!
We have #learn-to-play to help get folks started with learning D&D (and you can ask specific questions here as you run into them).
When you have a rough idea of the core game mechanics and game rules, maybe try your hand at making a character to see how that works.
Then when you feel ready to try and play a game of D&D with others, check out #find-a-game to read up on helpful tips on finding a game and also how to use our Looking For Game channels here.
This is the best channel for LFG, thank you.
I have a couple of level 1 characters. One in particular I would like to play. I think I have a base understanding of what's going on, just need exposure and playtime to get the hang of it.
Thanks for the reply 😁
Ah gotcha - yeah check out the posts in #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community for possible games/groups you can join (and again check out #find-a-game for more info and instructions on how to use those LFG channels).
can clerics be offensive/non healers?
Cleric is the one class that can pretty much be anything lol
I present wizards. Widest range of spells in the game. Can have practically infinite combinations of prepped spells that you can keep changing. Evocation for pure damage and fireballs, war magic or abjuration for defense, enchantment or illusion for strategy and trickery, divination and chronurgy for control, even bladesinging if you want to be the opposite of an eldritch knight or arcane trickster and be mainly a caster and dip into melee a bit.
Ppl think that clerics are only healers though... have these people heard of "death domain"
I thought that was the Bard?
Can i see where i could possibly find people to play with VvV
I usually do dnd but still not used to stat systems or spells as we usually do our own campaign with our own lore and powersystem??
im a warlock
The best healbot class goes to Cleric but it goes way further than that
subclass/patron?

Healer is definitely the first thing people think, but that's just not accurate. Yeah, they are probably the best healers if youre going for one, but D&D is not like most rpgs, and a party doesnt need a dedicated healer, and even when you have one, role of a healer isn't gonna be constantly topping off people's health 😛
ig...
The powerful being you signed a contract with as a Warlock that gives you power
In crude terms, your fantasy sugar daddy/mommy
Future support casters: I present to you abjuration wizard. Don't need to heal if your magic shield took all the damage for you
Um is there anyone doing a session? Or plan to do one as i do have alot of time rn so looking for one
oh me too and i need help along the way or is it a drag to teach someone while playing?
Please use the Looking For Game channels to solicit/organize games folks.
It's off topic here
See #find-a-game to learn more
Who you got the magic from. Examples include fey, celestial, fiend, GOO (great old one), genie, and fathomless (sea monster)
Oh okie thabks
ooooh oki oki
you really need to research this shit okay okay wait
Pardon me, GOO?
Like, Lovecraftian god
Yeah yeah, what is that
Oh okay
^
I was thinking more like the king in yellow
Also possible ig. If your dm allows and you write a suitable backstory
can i draw my power from food?
I am not a warlock, I am however a bard
as a warlock
oh wait that was the wrong person 🤦♀️
Scaling for the late game with 19 Charisma and 7 strength🙏
or is there any specific deities we need to draw power from?
Please follow the game rules if you actually want to have a chance to play with others.
While D&D allows for a lot of freedom (with DM permission), playing by the rules provides a cohesive game experience.
Well, not deity, but a powerful being that can grant power
just abhere to one of the official categories, each category has a number of different individual patrons
If you want to draw it from like food or something I think a paladin is what you're looking for
They draw their power from oaths I think?
See https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules for the free basic rules.
Chapter 1 (rythem of the game, core game mechanics) and chapter 2 (how to create a character) are good places to start (also see #learn-to-play)
but like think about it
food is a natural source right
You're onto something
For example, archfey warlocks can have Prince of Frost, Queen of Air and Darkness, Titania, Oberon, or Hyrsam
I'm having a really hard time finishing my character sheet
I mean if you want to you can use DnDBeyond's character randomizer to create a random character for you...
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/builder/randomize
I already have a character here, but it's a changeling unfortunately and it's paid content
Yep - only the things in the free rules/System Reference Document are free
The game designers and everyone supporting them also want to put food on their table
So they make content that you have to buy
I just am unfamiliar with some terms, like spellcasting ability, spell save DC and spell attack bonus
Scan through the free basic rules - it even has a glossary
For instance if you check your class table you can learn what your spellcasting ability is
Yeah I'm planning to, I just can't access my pc rn
This is bad advice
There’s lots of patrons that aren’t listed there
This is newcomers - after they learn the core game they can go to #character-discussion and #optimization to learn more
idk what is good or bad im just taking note of everything
Just make sure your patron is actually capable of giving you magical powers
I think depending on your DM anything is allowed, mine personally allows the warlock freedom to a deity, even jokingly allowing Morgan Freeman to be their patron saint
From that one movie Jim Carrey is in
hi, is roll20 standard for online sessions?
i mean he was god
It’s pretty common. There’s not really a standard, though
can you recommend any tools/websites?
currently all i know is to use beyond for character sheets and rolling
Beyond is good for making a character, but no one really plays on it
so whats the substitute?
Any other VTT
Hey, can dnd be learned while actively playing or do u have to make preparations beforehand?
so during a game, is roll20 and a notepad all that you usually need?
difference of wizard and warlock
?tag new online
oh yeah thissss
Honestly depends on the group of people you play with, I recently just played yesterday & everyone was nice & welcoming so they didn't mind me asking them a bit of questions if I was uncertain/unsure!
I did learn a lot (besides playing BG3) by seeing what my buddies did.
I did play BG3 but I probably still wouldnt understand anything
If they're nice you can ask things!
It helps to spend some effort learning the core game rules and how to make/use a character sheet (again chapters 1 and 2 of the free basic rules).
But yeah many groups are fine with new to D&D players
But is it generally possible to learn dnd step by step while playing with a game master who knows their stuff (or other players), like with card games for example, when my friends try to teach me the game, we play it and they explain it step by step
So here's the thing - a typical D&D game session will run from 2-4 hours.
Many folks don't want to spend their entire game session time teaching you all the things.
Answering a few questions here and there? Generally not a problem.
But showing up and asking "So what's this dice do? What does HP mean?" with no effort put in beforehand to try and learn some stuff is likely going to annoy the rest of the group.
Don't force them to spend their precious game time teaching you everything, particularly when you have the free basic rules to get a start on: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
But if you show up and have a rough idea of the game mechanics and how a character sheet works - then yeah asking some questions to get clarification or learn a bit more won't really be an issue.

Hello
Hi, welcome to the server have any questions?
Uhm, if i have 3 othere friends is it possible to play dnd using like Ai or smt as help? (All of us compleately new)
AI is not going to give you a great D&D experience IMO
Best to find an actual human Dungeon Master to run an adventure
😭 we got NO clue of how dnd works
No, AI is very poor at playing D&D. It gives a facsimile that looks correct, but it often gets rules wrong especially in ways that aren’t obvious. Amongst other issues of hallucinations, memory limits, etc
If you're new to D&D check out #learn-to-play and the free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
Thx
Ah alr
Feel free to ask specific questions as you read and learn and the community here can help answer them.
W community
I also suggest making a practice character as you read through
I made 1 randomly
On dnd beyond or smt
Does an Elf Wizard make sense, or did i make the most random character
That's fine - honestly play what's fun for you and your group.
alr
Hii
Welcome
Hello
Im new to DnD, never played it before but seen people play dnd online and learn about it a bit in YouTube.
Welcome, do you have any specific questions?
How people prepare and act as the DM for players?
Ahh, I can’t help too much there just don’t homebrew and wing too much. I learned from experience
Oh, ok. Are you well experienced in DnD?
Don’t play much but I have a lot of the rules memorized
Anyways people in here https://discord.com/channels/516367331358801950/540597424692002878 can help you out more
Ok, thanks.
Your welcome
Do you DnD online or in real life?

What is a Dungeon Master?
- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.
How does it work?
- Learn how to be a Dungeon Master with this YouTube video or D&D Beyond article.

Question guys if I start playing dnd whit a grup of amatures shold the master be a more expiriced player ?
Doesn't have to be.
How do I remember what dice goes for which check there are so many💔 😭
I know that d20 is for skill checks and that's about all I can remember
The vast majority of rolls use the d20.
Most damage rolls use one of the other dice, and the thing dealing the damage will tell you which dice to use.
Okay soo everything except damage rolls uses 20?
Not everything, but most things.
Whatever ability or feature you're using should tell you what dice to roll
It doesn't expect you to just pick one
Chance to hit (Attack rolls), change to resist effects (saving throws), chance to succeed at difficult tasks (ability checks) all use the d20.
What level do I need to be in order to type in #looking-for-dm ?
There are some exceptions such as Star Druids cosmic omen

I am SO confused actually wait😭
So I roll twice for each attack. The d20 for the chance to hit and the dice on the card for the damage?
Hello everyone, just a doubt, is it a unwritten rule that my character needs to be an OC of mine or can I do it inspired in an fictional character?
Yes
Okay thank you
if you go to the #find-a-game channel and read through whats posted there, it will explain how to use the server bot. You have to use a command to fill out a form, then the bot with make a post for you based on your answers to that form
That's correct. Technically you only need to roll the damage roll if you actually succeed at hitting.
Isn't that one just an odd or even? In which case, the die itself doesn't really matter
There is some addition as well
hey guys can i ask here about bg1?
Thank you :)
that would go in #dnd-media
Yes, but you could use a d1 for woe
anyone?
It’s great to start with something inspired by fictional character most people would say it’s better to make your own but either is fine especially if your new
bet ty
Generally speaking, its better to create your own character. If you do want to make a character that's inspired by something from another piece of media, the best way to do that would be to imagine what this character would be like if they lived in a D&D world and had powers from this system. You shouldn't try to replicate powers that don't exist in this game or play something that's way more powerful than the average D&D character
I see
You can be inspired by other media, but you shouldn't try to replicate it exactly
doth thou know the tast of butta?
And the closer the character is to DnD's traditional swords and sorcery theme, the easier!
Making a character inspired by Legolas from Lord of the Rings is pretty easy.
Making a character inspired by Superman from DC comics is... a little more difficult.
i'm almost giving up already💔 tutorial has too many info for my little brain to take
There's certainly no rush. DnD takes time to learn. Take the Playing The Game section of the Basic Rules one step at a time, and in chunks if you have to.
I tried, I read slowly, its not even been 3 minutes and i've already forgotten 90% of what I read
It'll probably take more than 3 minutes. No need to rush or feel like you're stuck already, you've barely had any time to learn!
not what I meant, I meant I read the tutorial 3 minutes ago, not that I only read for 3 minutes
Ah, I see. Well, go back and take another look if you have to. Unfortunately, we can't learn the game for you
im well aware of that🥀 😭
Perhaps watching some video tutorials might make it easier for you? There are a few recommended by the server on occasion.
oh where can I see those
What kind of learner are you? Because not everyone learns best from reading, sometimes listening or actually doing the task is better.
yeah I was hoping I could get someone to teach me I usually learn faster like that but I had already in mind it might not be possible, so youtube tutorials might be the best opportunity for me

There's a link to some intro videos in the bot post above. They're a little outdated, but should explain all the basics.
They're divided into specific subjects. You'll only need to watch the ones for the sections you're having trouble with
You certainly don't need to watch them all
You don't have to memorize everything. When you actually play the game, there will be 4-5 other people at the table to remind you of anything you forget. My advice would be, instead of trying to memorize what the rules actually say, just try to familiarize yourself with where certain information is within the rules. So when you're playing, if you want to remember the rule on something, you can look it up. Its totally normal to have the rules with you and to look something up while playing the game.
oh, okay will do
Anyone have any tips for me and my friend before we go looking for a party?
Have you read through the basic rules and familiarized yourself with how to play?
Yeah pretty much but im still not sure how it goes
I know how turns work and what not
Awesome, sounds like you're in a good spot then. If you're ready to start looking for a group to play with, one of the users in this discord named iamrazorwing has written an extremely detailed and helpful guide on how to find a group and start playing:

Ok
Am i forced to pick my race and class from the given ones or can i make up my own
It's highly recommended to stick to official classes and species, especially for new players.
Thanks, backgrounds can be anything though right?
If you care about staying within the rules of the game, then you need to pick one of the existing options from the official sourcebooks. But D&D isn't a video game, and there's no police that will stop you from doing something "wrong" so some people are ok with changing the rules or making up their own content. This is called "homebrew." Whether or not this is acceptable in your game depends on the group you play with. Some people prefer to strictly stick to the rules, and others like to be flexible and trying weird and unique things.
However, since you are new to the game, I HIGHLY recommend that you avoid all homebrew content until you feel more familiar with the rules and how to play. Playing with homebrew as a newcomer is like trying to design a balance patch for a video game before you've played it. You won't have enough of an understanding of the systems and game-balance to create something that fits within the bounds of expectations and fun.
Thank you so much good to know
There are a list of backgrounds available as well. What you might be referring to is backstories.
Kinda, but not really. Backgrounds also have a set list that you choose from. You can explain how that background fits your character in any way you like, so your "backstory" is up to you. But "backgrounds" are a specific game mechanic with specific effects, so you can't create something on your own for that
Yeah thank you
-# Terms and conditions may apply, always consult your local DM
The history of what your character did prior to the adventure is something to hash out with your DM. I'd recommend keeping things vague and simple into you can work with your DM directly.
Remember that level 1 characters are pretty weak, all told. It's best to avoid backstories that involve saving kingdoms, defeating monsters, or other similar things that would be unrealistic for a starting adventurer.
I meant something like my backstory is for example a farmer so i have +1 wisdom or something like that
Is that a backstory or am i thinking of background
And worth mentioning, just in case: your backstory can't grant you any mechanical benefits or special items. You can't just say "my character met a wizard who gave her the ability to fly" if your character can't fly. Your abilities come from your origin and class, not from your backstory.
Oh ok
Thanks
"farmer" is one of the available background choices
in the videos, they often talk about some books/guides, what are those? they also include pages
The rules of D&D are published as books. You can buy them online or in bookstores, or rent them from a library. Basically anywhere you'd be able to buy a book. There is digital versions as well if you prefer that
but not every library has those right
They are quite popular, so I'd be surprised if they didn't, but I'm not going to claim that every library in the entire world is 100% guarenteed to have them
do they count as literal books or in where can I search for them? under what category?
Yes they are literal books. I haven't rented one from a library before, so I wouldn't know what category they're in, but you can just try searching for them by name
There are actual books as well as websites that host digital versions. If you're looking for the best one for a new player, I'd recommend the Player's Handbook.
But the free Basic Rules has everything you need to actually play, is you don't want to spend the money.
The player's handbook is kinda like an expanded version of the basic rules, but most of the additional content it includes is character creation options. The Basic Rules only include the bare minimum for character creation
ah I see, but can I play DND without spending a single dime?
That's correct. The Basic Rules are free, dice can be rolled using programs online, and you can chat with folks over voice chat. All you need is an Internet connection.
damn that's cool, what about IRL?
You could theoretically roll dice in real life using things like phone programs.
Though rolling actual dice is fun
I can't use the other player's dice? I must have my own?
I thought all dices were shared or something
also, isn't like a big thing needed where you place your stuff? idk i think i saw something like that, like a board, no? or does the GM bring that in
You can share someone else's dice, but that's a little bit taboo. Not against the rules or anything, but its unusual, and not everyone will be comfortable with it.
You could borrow another person's dice if they let you, of course. I know not everyone is cool with that though haha
hmmmm I see
As for what goes on the table, that's for the DM to worry about.
about the dice, where can I get those special ones? like the ones with 6,8,12 faces and such
You can order them online, but most local game stores will have the special dice available.
local game stores as in the normal ones that sell games?
Game stores and comic book stores are the most likely place to find them, but I've even seen them at some book stores. I think Barnes and Noble might carry them now
what are barnes and noble
I'm glad you were able to nail that explanation, because I couldn't articulate how to describe a LGS
"Barnes and Noble" is the name of a large chain of book stores. They are pretty big in America, but I don't know if they are in other countries
never heard of it, im in EU
If you search "local game stores near me" or "comic book stores near me", I'm sure you'll find something
Fair enough. My point was, any place that sells novelty games, books, comics, etc will probably have D&D Dice for sale
I found some but in the pictures inside of them I cant seem to find any dices
ima just call the store and ask if they have
That's probably a safe bet.
Or check their websites.
unlucky me all stores are more than 2 km away 💔
@iron ember , you'll be better off reading #find-a-game to get started.
2km is not that far. That's within walking distance. It takes me more than 30 minutes to drive to my game store
oh damn
they didnt accept the call 💔
They could just be busy. Try again later
its alr 9 pm any more later they'll be sleeping, I think ima just walk there tmr and see if they have anything
how do I find games irl in my city?
Hello everyone ! I am new to DnD and i'd like to have some feedback on the first character that I made, i've been watching the first dungeons of drakkenheim campaign from dungeon dudes i've watched like 115 hours, so I'm starting a little bit to understand DnD but I still have an enormous amount of things to learn. I had a strong base already in mind for my character, spells, backstory etc, but chatgpt definetly helped me put everything together and since it's AI i'm sure some things were overlooked or it's missing a DnD veteran approach. I don't want to post the whole final summary of what i've got on chatgpt tho because it's long, what would be the best approach to share it ?
I think there's a channel for that #character-discussion idk tho
Game stores like that one might have games running. They also might know other places that host them. I'd ask the attendant.
sure thing, will do that, what if that doesn't work? what other choices do I have
right, I sort of forgot time zones are a thing. There's a good chance they are closed in that case. Calling back tomorrow seems like a good idea
AI generated content of any sort isn't allowed on the server. In order to share it, you'd have to summarize it yourself. You can post it on #character-discussion afterwards.
yeah it does say closed at the google maps but I thought maybe it called their personal phones and they'd accept idk... newbie mistake

@timid locust Oh uh well I mean it just helped me put it all nicely together because I was trying to make a character sheet and I had a hard time, you don't get that kind of information on character creation while watching a campaign but if I need to do it myself could you guide me on a website to make a character sheet ?
I can't guide you in a 1:1 sense, but the Basic Rules in the link above should have a step by step guide on building a character, as well as the basics on how to play.
If you have any specific questions while you're reading, we can help with those here.
how long does the backstory need to be?
Hard to say, since your DM might have specifications. It's usually safe to keep it simple and vague.
2 lines good enough?
Might be a little sparse for some DMs, but you can always add to it later if they want!
hmm, just in case i'll add 2 more lines then
Am I allowed to have a misleading background descriptor
Misleading to who? Your party members probably won't ever need the context for which background you took
Or are you asking "can I take the Farmer background if my character has never been to a farm in their life?"
It's complicated to explain
Specifically, ||my character is part of a noble family but ran away after finding out how her own family was treating basically everyone else and adventures to gather allies, understand the world so she can become a better ruler when she returns, and to regain the sense of curiosity she had when she was younger but was lost upon seeing the mistreatment of the people||
The usual! Need help with anything?
So does this count as noble background or not because the character is unwilling to actually put it on their theoretical character sheet
I am new on the server, and looking around. Been playing dnd for a while, but very new to discord
Oooooh, interesting problem
The other players probably won't ever see your character sheet. I think most DMs will be okay with you just saying "my character is a farmer" even though you've got Noble written on your sheet.
No, she
hol up
Well welcome! Don't forget to check out #channel-guide to see the other channels we have for specific topics.
Thanks !
She's a wizard. Her family wanted to ensure that she would continue their legacy and keep her blind to the consequences their actions had on the rest of the kingdom. Purely out of curiosity, she snuck out to see why her family held her back. She eventually found a wizard and began taking magic lessons from him every time she snuck out. Eventually she became powerful enough to escape her kingdom and start adventuring. She can't return until she has enough power and allies to rightfully take back the throne and expose the other nobles.
Just to try and cut to the heart of it: did you take the Noble background for the features, like skills?
She does have a personal reason for adventuring though, she enjoyed exploring and learning magic before she escaped. Seeing the state of her kingdom under her family's rule turned her untrusting and cynical. She yearns to find the same joy she felt when she was younger. She really just wants her curiosity back
In short I didn't know anything about the actual game functions of backgrounds, I didn't know what this character would count as because she personally rejects it
Take a look at the background options and pick the one that you think fits most mechanically or narratively.
Here are the free ones:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-origins#BackgroundDescriptions
Okay. A character has three core parts: species, class and background. Each grants certain features like proficiencies and hit dice and so on.
Now, at my table (your DM may vary) it doesn't matter what name is on your background, they're just packets of bits, you pick the one that has the bits you want.
You don't have to pick Noble just because you were born to a noble family if you don't want. You could pick Sage since she's training with a Wizard. You could pick Charlatan, because you like the abilities and feat it grants.
Ultimately, whatever you choose, you don't have to tell the rest of your party what you picked. The only person who needs to know your backstory is your DM.
TLDR I didn't care abt the stats/equipment/gameplay functions. Just the character
The background is, exclusively: stats, equipment, and gameplay functions.
Basically I wanted the other players to see my character sheet have "Noble (?)" (including the question mark) on it and figure out my character's backstory which only I and the DM know at the start
I don't think I've ever seen any of my fellow players' character sheets in my 10 years of playing DnD
My rogue Slane was a con artist. She grew up among the boat folk of the Dagger Isles. I could have put Criminal or Urchin for background, easily.
I put down Noble. She was a princess who had escaped the revolution. Her elocution lessons, dance, poetry all became weapons in her craft as a confidence trickster.
can anyone explain to me this part of character building? "Proficiency/Language Choices" Idk what it means or does
Every character gets to pick 3 languages that they know when they start.
Common and two others.
irl lengauges?
Languages from the D&D game
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character#ChooseLanguages
You can find the list of languages here.
People who play rogues that aren't just edgy and nothing else are the goats
ah I see
Edgy is boring. It's much more fun to be a happy rogue imo
is there anywhere where all skill proficiencies are explained? like all of them, they didnt explain all in the youtube video
And give my characters living families
In what way? Do you mean what the different skills do?
I've come to love rogues much more since I realised that ||Corbeau|| from Pokemon Legends ZA would totally be a mastermind rogue
yeah what are they for
Most of that should be fairly self explanatory from the names. Are there specific ones you're confused about?
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game#SkillProficiencies
The list is right here
thank u
yeah you see english isn't my first lenguage so I couldn't exaclty understand most of them or what they do
For future reference, though, everything I'm listing is in the Basic Rules. You can use the search function on the top of the page to find stuff, as well as clicking through the subheaders to find the info you're looking for.
oh that makes it alot easier
iirc skill proficiencies affect individual skill checks. E.g. If your party finds an abandoned shrine to an unconfirmed god that your character needs to identify, that's probably a religion check. If your party is entering a dungeon and finds a trap mechanism but can't figure out how the trap works just yet, that's investigation. Different checks although they're both listed under Int
idk if this is there, but do every character spawn with common lenguage? or do I have to put it in lenguages
Every character spawns with common and 2 other languages of your choice
It's one of the three you pick.
riight
This link has the Free Rules in several languages: https://www.dndbeyond.com/srd
ah okay
ty
Earth languages, that is. The SRD hasn't made it into Abyssal (yet).
can I reset personality traits smh? I clicked random accidently but none seem to light up or anything
it says choose 2 is that for everything or for each category? like personality 2 then ideals 2 and the rest 2?
or just 2 in all of those total
It's by category. So if it says 2, that's just for that category
I see, what about lifestyle, what are these SP and GP?
Silver pieces and gold pieces
what does those mean?
They’re currency
ohh
It's the kind of money in the world of DnD. Your background and your class determine how much money you start with.
how am I supposed to check how many I have before I even create or join a game? 😭
noble and custom background, how much do I have? and paladin
You can get some as part of your starting equipment
Is your background noble or custom? You can't pick both.
And that depends on what starting equipment is with paladin too
huh but it says it is
can I send you a ss and then you see what's wrong with my character thing
cuz it says custom background and then noble
Did you perhaps select a custom background but then choose the background feature of a noble?
That’s what I’m thinking
where can I check if i did that? my memory is like a goldfish's
Also, 2014 or 2024 rules?
I see, ty
If you're using the 2024 rules, custom backgrounds should not be a legal option within the RAW, so I would recommend changing that
oh you cant choose custom I see
there's only 2014 ones, do I pick those?
There should be 2024 options…
there's only "core" and 2014 core but no 2024 ones
2024 is “core”
Cuz you gotta pay for more~
ah💔
Because those are the only ones available for free. As I said earlier, the free basic rules only contains the absolute bare minimum of character creation options
why does it tell me to choose a gaming set? what are these choices🥀 what's this
Noticed
It’s…a gaming set. Idk what to tell you
darts are a gaming set? idk what I should choose
Darts let you have a set of darts to play!
"Gaming sets" are just a toy or game that your character likes to play. Darts, Chess, Poker, etc
right
I see
I'm not sure what this question means
one of the choices is "bowls"
but that's okay I pick dices
Soldier and paladin, how much should I have?
i dont think i got to choose that yet
Are you using dnd beyond?
ah I dont think I did, equipement is in 5 im in 2
yeah
Gold is part of equipment
You can
bet
I just did my character, exported from DeD beyond but there's a LOT of things missing; (Defences, HP, heroic inspiration) and some more, is that normal?
you can make the sheet shareable to the public and send us a link to view it.
how do I do that?
it should like your current HP, but if you don't have any natural defenses (IE: poison resistance) nothing will show in that box. same with heroic inspiration. it's something you are given by the DM
ah I just filled them with random numbers💔
bruhh cant seem to put them back
home section of the character builder, scroll to the very bottom where "character privacy" is and set to "Public", then if you click on the "what's next" there is an option to view character sheet. click that. Then top you should see "Share" click that
and you should get a link like this: https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/11366105/F8OPI9
before that let me fix it😭 shoudln't have filled the stuff I did without knowing
how do I set them back, when I delete the numbers it just writes them back
manage your character sheet.. "manage character and level"
where is that
in the home section is Hit Point Type.. use "fixed"
ah I see there
make sure you click "wear" on any armor you picked for your character and "Wield" on any weapon, otherwise the builder won't add them to your AC and attack sections
right, can I get weapons later when I join a game or something? I cant exactly seem to pick a weapon i want but the skills of it
Yes
nice
is that good enough?
that's fine.. your defenses section is empty because your character doesn't have anything to put there yet. Some species have poison or other damage resistances for example
You’re missing your spells, and your equipment is a lil off
well, yeah.. but they were asking if they could add stuff later, so I assumed it was intentional
I meant armor, but fair point
Take a look at the spells.. Nugget is right, that is a major missing point.
it isn't
im totally new and idk how this works
Did you add weapons manually?
hmm, where do I add spells
Go to the Spells section of your character sheet and press Manage Spells
yeah I thought you could see those, rn i can see them and their skills; lance, shortbow, spear and unarmed
ah I see
I thought so, just double checking
and I can only get these 13 spells lvl 1?
You can only prepare 2 out of those btw
done clicked spells, they're all good now?
Lemme check
do I gotta send the link again or it auto updates
Looks good!
Auto updates
Do you have a backstory?
yuh
Can you send it to #character-discussion ?
sure thing
Hi!! I’ve js started dnd and I know absolutely nothing. :3 I unfortunately have no experience or anyone to play with as no one I know wants to >:3
Read up on the first few chapters of the free basic rules on #learn-to-play , and feel free to ask any questions you might have. Then, make a practice character and get it reviewed in #character-discussion .
Once you’re ready and got the fundamentals down, you can check out #find-a-game for information on how to find a group online. To make a post, type the appropriate command in any chat channel.
@timid locust thanks for pointing me in the right direction, I just finished creating my first character on DnD beyond
I am quite pleased with the final result
Hey, we are in the same boat, i’m here for guidance 😭
What do yall need help with?
Just got the new 2025 starter set (and the 2014 dm guide) and im completely overwhelmed. I have 2 friends who want to play, do I just use a preset story? How do I create characters? Should I print out character sheets and fill them out? But how do I show them fill out the sheet and all these skills? Or equipment? What does everything on that sheet mean?
As you can see, im quite clueless. It’s probably really simple and I’m just overthinking it. If anyone could explain this all to me or if you have a video please lmk.
I recommend reading the first two chapters of the Free Basic Rules, then reading this https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character
You can make sheets either on paper or dnd beyond
I used that website and it was pretty smooth, I honestly just don’t even know how to start playing. (Also have no friends) 😭🤣
ty, ill check it out and if I have any questions ill let you know

Hi! I've never played D&D before and I'm honestly very new to all of this.
I learn best by just doing instead of studying rules.
I'm wondering if any DM would be open to letting me drop into a session as a very simple creature/ monster for a single encounter - like I attack the party, they kill me, and I'm done.
I'm totally fine with having very basic actions, following instructions, and disappearing after the fight. I'm not looking to join a full campaign – just to learn how combat and turns work in a low-pressure way.
I'm on mobile and happy to be guided. Thanks for reading!

Hello everyone, my (user) name is King Logan.
I'm new to this Discord community but I've about 10 years of DnD experience. Mostly with local friends and at a comic book store.
I am a PRO at roleplaying and decent gameplay and combat.
I tend to be a player role, often like playing as the unique good player or even a villain player/npc (Details another time.)
Would love if anyone with great experience would introduce me how to join sessions or set up character sheets. Looking foward getting to know you guys.

I can do the former
i would do a ome shot with you!
Yes pleaseeee
So! How much of the rules do you know?
Because there’s a bit of reading to be done.
Hey guys I’m super new to dnd and I’m just trying to learn what I can about it and maybe play a small campaign to learn about the game I really am clueless when it comes to these things with the characters and rules and stuff
None I know like bard and stuff like that but I don’t understand the types of DnD
Read the first two chapters of the Free basic D&D rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
After that, get back to this channel
REAPZ you too
Thank you!!!
Yessss
I think ive read it
After that, decide your class, background, species, stats, equipment, skills, spells (if applicable) and backstory
And put that on a character sheet
Do the stats need to be like something certain? Like based on level?

Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
Thank you I think I’ve done it all
I used my notes app for now but will write down on paper at some point
Hello 👋
This is all done now
Great
What’s a good YouTube channel/playlist to get an idea of how good/fun campaigns go
Depends on what you like, there are very professional campaigns out there (critical role, dimension 20 are two examples). Otherwise there are a bunch of smaller creators that do recorded campaigns
There is a channel called World of Io, which does some fun stuff
cuz i wanna join a campaign other than my local 1s
This server doesnt host games, you can check in #find-a-game for ways to do so
Gotcha
Was generally looking for more casual stuff
Hey, im brand new to D&D and was wondering if i can join someones beginer friendly campaign ?
Arcane Arcade is also pretty good, its made by the guys behind the Xp to Lvl 3 channel
Check out #find-a-game
recieved my physical copy of my player handbook yesterday and was excited to make my first character.
Went on DnD Beyond to make the character only to find that i needed a digial copy of it to have access to all the subclass.
Much fun lol
Yeah, the access doesn't crossover
You can just make the character on paper, or if you really want digital, homebrew in the other options on DDB
I'm looking for a professional rogue to take me in as a student
I'd just use a character sheet pdf or a google sheets character sheet if that is your preference
Otherwise if you end up joining a group that uses d&d beyond for character sheets, if the DM has some of the books im pretty sure there is a way the DM can extend those books to you somehow
one question, what if I join a irl game but I lack the dices? as in, I have 1 d20 but I need 3, can I just write what the dice gives and rerolling it 3 times or do I MUST have 3?
you can just reroll it!!
for the record you could also use an online dice roller at the table on your laptop or other device as well if the rest of your table is cool with it
Ya only really need 1. 2 is nice for adv/dis. Dont really need 3 Unless its like elven accuracy. But as long as ya have one you are good
ohhh that's nice
How many ppl should be in one party, and how many casters is too many casters?
Im gonna be honest here the casters are looking wayyy more appealing than the martials
- The recommended is 4-5
- There is no such thing
hello im new how do i like get started or somethin
read the rules! and start making a character
ight

pick a race (species), class (play style/game mechanics), background/origin, and come up with a backstory and personality for ur character
Would it surprise you that the strongest, most optimal party in dnd is actually just 4 casters
no lol
2 wizards 2 warlocks
As for the amount of people in a party that's determined by the campaign/DM
Proof that sorcerers can [duck] off
Sorcs are used as a multiclass dip for the Warlocks so they aren't completely useless
What are some ways DMs often use to start their session one?
Like, aside from the 'you're in a taven'?
Any less and its up to the DM to either adjust the enemy count accordingly or not do anything if they want the campaign to be v hard
Campaigns often have starting prompts to them
And can I have them, like choose between three starting options
Descent Into Avernus starts off with the players being escorted to meet a Flaming Fist captain
For quests or how they'll interact with the story and world
Tyranny of Dragons starts off with the players traveling when they suddenly see a dragon and a bunch of Tiamat cultists cooking up a town, etc
It is I, MERLIN THE WISE!!!!!
🌩️🌩️🌩️🌩️🌩️🌩️🌩️🌩️🌩️🌩️🌩️🌩️
Lost Mines of Phandelver starts off with meeting your contractor who gives you a quest right away
So many ways to go about it, depends heavily on your campaign and what your campaign outline is
So I have three routes:
A. Have the players investigate a treasury convoy ambush scene.
B. Investigate daughter of a governor.
C. Save a cat. (Bear with me)
They're linked, one will lead to another, but only option C leads to both.
Would this work?
#dm-discussion is a great place to discuss DM-ing questions btw!
All of them work, but they seem more like adventure hooks than a location to meet. You could perhaps use C to introduce each PC. Start with one PC’s search and quickly introduce more PCs as their paths cross
Well, I intended for them to actually meet on a boat before dropping at the location I was meant for them to be
And nice, didn't know there was that section
I never played dnd are there special games for a first time? I'm kind scared to try and really shy
There are often new player friendly games available, and adventures written for new players to start with. Lost Mines of Phandelver, Dragons of Stormwreck Isle, Dragon of Icepeak Spire, and Heroes of the Borderlands are all designed with new players in mind.
Peril in Pinebrook is also a very simplified adventure designed to introduce young or very new to TTRPG players.
So if you look out for games tagged 'new player friendly' or running those adventures, they're probably a safe bet for a first game!
Thank you!
helloooo I'm also new 👋

Heyy
hellooo
Hello also new, I’m Nugget!
HI nugget, Im Crisp 😄
How can I help you today?
I have no idea, i just got here
I'm kinda exploring the discord a bit and tryna navigate and figure out what I wanna do next
Is this where the new people group together?
I have no idea
This is where new people ask questions about dnd
If looking for a group to play in, all LFG chatter has to go in the LFG channels. #find-a-game has more information on how to post into those channels.
I understand it now
I kinda know some basics, and i've played a couple times, but not well and not continuously lol.
Is there a way to find games in our timezone or something similar?
Make a post in #looking-for-dm (type out /looking-for dm ) outlining your availability, and look around in #looking-for-players for games that match your Timezone
alrighty thank you ^^
It says I don't have permission to type in that channel :/
Small little note that while timezones are helpful, they're not the be all.
I know I just figured it might be a good place to start haha
No one does! The instructions are in #find-a-game . You can type the commands in any channel you do have permission for.
OH okay thank you
Didn’t I say in my message to “type out /looking-for dm”?
For example My groups timezones are usually GMT/UTC: -8,-7,-5 ,0, +1, +2
Some people handily use timestamps that will convert the time to the viewers timezone automatically (like this: <t:1766481157:t> )
Which sites like https://sesh.fyi/timestamp/ or https://hammertime.cyou/ can make for you.
sorry I think i misunderstood it when you said it and got a bit confused, my apologies
No worries, that's a common one- we're working on trying to make it clearer for folk, but that's going to be part of some bigger changes probably after the new year.
Oh cool sounds good
in #looking-for-players u js dm the gm asking that u want to play no? or do u need to say something else
That channel contains postings by DMs who are looking for players. Any info they need should be listed in their posting, otherwise a simple response stating your interest should suffice
As a draconic lineage sorcerer, I get dragons breath, but why would I use dragons breath over chromatic orb?
Chromatic orb just seems like a better spell in every situation than dragon’s breath no? Aside from thematics and flavor
Dragon’s Breath more reliably hits more targets, doesn’t have a component with a gold cost, can be applied to a different creature, and lasts longer
Dragon's Breath can be used with a spellcasting focus, whereas you need to material component to do chromatic orb
Doesn’t a arcane focus bypass material cost though
No
Foci only replace material components that are both:
- not consumed
- don’t have a listed gold cost
I see, alright
I see
Vicious Mockery damage scales with Charisma right?
Nope, at least not directly. The damage scales off of your character level. If you’re casting it as a Charisma-based caster, then the spell will have a higher save DC which will make it harder for enemies to save against it (and therefore harder to avoid damage)
i know nothing about dnd (practically) i wanna play it where should i start
is there discord rooms for that?

Welcome! I’d have a look at #learn-to-play as well as this channel’s pins, both of which have a bunch of useful newbie links including to the free Basic Rules. I suggest making a practice character as you flip through, since it often aids the learning process. The more you learn the easier it is to get into a table as well!
Don't feel pressured to memorize everything, take it at your own pace and focus on what you want to do (e.g. no need to read every spell description, or every classes' mechanics if you don't plan on playing one)
Also feel free to ask any specific questions you have here, we’re always happy to help! :)

What do I put in "Features and Traits" in my character sheet?
You put any features you gain from your species, class, background, feats, etc. It can get dense so I recommend either summarizing each feature or writing just the name so you can look up what each feature does as needed.
For example, if you’re a level 1 Orc Wizard you probably don’t want to write the full text of everything (e.g. the spellcasting feature). If I were to summarize everything I’d write:
Humanoid, Medium
Darkvision 120 ft.
Adrenaline Rush: BA Dash w/ Temp HP = PB. PB uses per SR or LR
Relentless Endurance: When 0 HP but not killed outright, 1 HP instead. 1/LR
Spellcasting (Wizard)
Ritual Adept: Can cast ritual spells w/o preparing them. Need spellbook.
Arcane Recovery: After SR, recover slots w/ combined level = 1/2 Wizard level. No slots > 5th. 1/LR
There are other features options may give you but have a dedicated spot somewhere else. For example, Orc’s movement speed would go in the movement speed box..
Helou people
ohh
so for example, since i'm a level 3 Changeling Bard I'd put Shapechanger, Bardic Inspiration, Jack of all Trades, etc?
Yeah and maybe reference the book and page # to look up the specific details if needed.
for expertise, since I have a +6 bonus on performance and persuasion, can I choose those skills and get +12?
Not normally - usually you can't gain proficiency in a skill more than once (although there are some class/background features that allow you to add twice your proficiency bonus to a skill).
Oh expertise
Yeah that's one of those features that allows double your proficiency bonus to the skill
Damn so a +12 on performance and persuasion?
Yes that is possible
back to features and traits, do I put Fey Ancestry up there as well?
Yes that would be a feature or trait from your species, background, or class and you'd wannt to remember that you have that feature.
is language important at all if you just have common?
It could be but it really depends on your D&D game
how do you calculate saving throws? if I'm not wrong it's ability modifier + proficiency bonus right?
so uh, I have 7 strength
and not proficient in strength
I have a -2 saving throw for strength, is that normal? I don't think that's right
7 Strength isn't normal unless you rolled for ability scores, but your calculation is correct.
yes my character has 7 strength
the dice rolleth and the dice taketh away
Was your DM present to verify your dice rolls, or did you do it on your own?
I rolled once, I have a screenshot for proof
It's my first time playing DnD I'm not gonna reroll on a bad thing I got
I think it'll make it more fun if it's that way
also in 5e 2024, making a skill check that involves a tool when you have proficiency in both the skill and tool, or expertise in the skill and proficiency in the tool confers advantage on the roll
So if you are performing using an instrument you have proficiency in, and have proficiency in the performance skill, you add your proficiency bonus and get advantage c:
I have +12 on performance, and then proficiency on my flute
What level is this character?
I’m not saying you did anything wrong, but IF your DM allows rolled stats, they will usually only accept them if they can see you do the rolls to verify the result. But the majority of DMs just don’t accept rolled stats at all and will ask you to make a character with the standard array or point buy methods. If you rolled your stats on your own, it will be quite rare to find a DM that allows you to use those stats. I just want to warn you about that because you may need to redo it. That’s all
I mean we do rolled stats every time and I've never had a DM ask for proof.
With an ability score of 7 your strength modifier is - 2 (because its -1 for every 2 away from 10. Since 7 falls between 6 and 8 it gets the -2)
One of my characters has a 6 strength and I kept it because I think it's hilarious. She's a wizard.
90lbs carry weight
at least you don't generally have to deal with heavy armor on a wizard
Correct. We got her a bag of holding STAT.
how do you determine ATK Bonuses?
Level 3 Bard
proficiency bonus (if proficient) + stat modifier + any effects (magic weapon, spells, feats, fighting styles etc)
The weapon will tell you if you use strength or dexterity as the stat
Please be dexterity please be dexterity PLEASE be dexterity
though some spells and class features let you replace that with another stat
Pick a rapier.
any ranged weapon or a weapon with the Finesse quality can used dex
YOU CAN CHOOSE IF IT'S DEXTERITY OR STRENGTH, thank god I chose the rapier
so a Rapier is just 1d8? no other effects?
1d8 + dex
I pretty muched scaled for the late game and dumped all my proficiency stats into charisma skills
hi guys
so since my Dex Modifier is 1... it's 1d8 + 1?
yeah
For damage, yes.
Your class tells you what types of weapons you are proficient in, assuming bard, you normally only have proficiency in simple weapons unless you are a valor or swords bard, or have multiclassed into something that gives proficiency, or have an appropriate feat/feature
A weapon attack roll is 1d20+proficieny+relevant stat
so my unarmed strike is 1 + my strength modifier..
I have a -2 strength modifier
Logically it'd be 0
but imagine if I can heal by punching people
how do I calculate spell save DC
8 + proficiency + spell casting modifier
my proficiency is +2 since I'm level 3 and my spell casting modifier is Charisma since I'm a bard so it's
8 + 2 + 4?
yep, so DC 14
Not that we mind helping, but have you read through the basic rules?
I have, but this sheet contains some stuff that aren't in the "learn to play"
I have it like 90% done, and better safe than sorry to ask people
A good point got brought up. Technically the bard class can't use rapier unless you have a special feat or something that allows martial weapons.
So you'll want either the quarterstaff or dagger (you could have two but then you wanna look up two handed fighting). Quarterstaff does more damage, but daggers can double as a thrown weapon in a pinch.
#learn-to-play message the link to the free rules is on this part of the Learn to Play, which includes the directions for building a character; though some of it is spread over the rulebook so it is easier to ask for some of it than hunting it down XD
