@buoyant lake just to clarify, have you read through the basic rules yet, or did you jump right into making a character?

Alr
When you’re done with that, https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character
is a character creation guide
And feel free to ask any questions you may have!
that's exatly why you don't trust a 19~20 XD
Touche
Okay so do I have to read till doungen master ?
Just make one for practice
Read till*
Okay so I read a bit and mostly idk the ai Lwk was a good helper I chose sage as my background as an sorcerer my race is eladrin
Does that work so far ?
Btw ai told me I can choose a time of year for eladrin is that true ? And if so it told me that if I choose spring I can teleport my self or an ally. Is that true ?
... don't rely on AI when you have the actual rules right there and this whole Discord to ask questions
The 2014 version of the Eladrin species did have seasons that could provide different mechanical features
Ik ik that’s what I’m here for I’m not using the ai character just wanna know if what it said was right because I may still wanna use that race’
But not anymore?
The 2024 Eladrin is an Elf heritage
Oh
Wait actually I'm not sure they've reworked Eladrin for 2024
Ah nope they haven't - so the same 2014 stuff still works
You pick from one of four seasons
The season impacts the ERladrin's Fey Step feature
So eladrin is just elf but like a sub species?
Eladrin's are Elves of the feywild
Alr
While I agree with @echo kelp on not using AI, the AI is correct on a Sping Eladrin being able to teleport you or an allied creature. Also this feature can be done once per short or long rest, with a limit of teleport 30ft away
That’s what the ai said
Yeah just a reminder that we need to be a bit vague on copyrighted material that's not free
You can quote small portions needed for the discussion but even better to link to a source and if the person owns it they can view it.
can someone recommend me some videos on character creation
Yeah - wasd20 has a video on 2024 character creation on YouTube
Because I kinda know some things I watched a few one shots
Let me see if I can find a link
Tysm
Here you go: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GXwYXyKwaDo
Can I add u ?
Add me?
I don't take friend requests or direct messages on this server as I'm a moderator and want everything to be here on server where my management can see it all.
Alr
Sorry
Np
Feel free to ask questions here in channel though - folks here can help answer them
Im gonna watch the video rq
Rq I have a question is it worth it to buy myself the dnd rule book or is a new version gonna release soon ?
The 2024 updates were just released so I'd say you're pretty safe
That said you can start playing D&D just with the free rules and then if you like it well enough invest in the Players Handbook
I second this
The books provide more options and rules that you can add to your game but the free basic rules has everything needed to run an actual D&D game.
Yea but the reason I want it is because if I have it irl I can deal with character creation better
? Why
Oh sure - I think the Players Handbook is a great book to get if you had to get just one D&D book.
Boulder gate 3 is amazing no it might the best rpg ive ever played
Alr do you know where I could order it online?
They’re not cheap. The books are good, but i don’t know if I’d recommend spending money on something when trying it out for the first time, when there’s a free alternative.
This is a good point. Try it out and ask others for help first and then if you really feel like you need it or want it then go for it
Your Lwk right I’ll think about some more
I’m also fairly new and have thought about getting it to help me but communities and other players/ DM’s have helped me a lot
Rq might sound dumb but what is the proficiency bonus
Hi also fairly new, I’m Nugget!
It’s an addition to a roll when you do something you’re proficient in. The amount is dependent on your level
Hi Nugget
Oh ty
it is a modifier that you add to something you're proficient in, like a certain skill check or when you attack with a certain weapon.
lately it's like an every 6~10 years thing and the most recent PHB was released last year so you're good to grab it
If you want physical editions, I highly recommend seeing if you can find them used first
Will do
If you need a good explain video look up actor Deborah explains dnd to Jon bernthal easy and simple as u get
hii
I am Electro, D&D has been catching my attention lately and i really wanna try it, although i dont know any of the rules or classes at all, so i thought maybe coming in here was a good idea
¿how are y'all doing anyways?
Goooood morning afternoon evening, Wahzzup!
Read up on the first few chapters of the free basic rules on #learn-to-play , and feel free to ask any questions you might have.
ohh, thank you, i'll go rn
For theoretical purposes is it possible to play DnD by your self
Yes
It’s just advanced daydreaming
It is technically possible, but not easy or really recommended
The game isn't designed for that at all
Indeed
Interesting . I know another good alternative if you dont have people to play with is baulder gates 3
Yes, there are CYOA booklets that are self guided adventures (mostly from third parties)
there used to be official ones back in the day as well
Thanks interesting
Thats awesome
Can confirm that, I've read over one that my dad has. I think it was from the late 80s.
generally can bring your own character from within a certain level range or they'll have premade ones included
Thats helpful for sure.
There are two free modules from this creator:
Info: https://1shotadventures.com/solo-adventures-beyond-the-vale-of-madness/
Booklet: https://1shotadventures.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Beyond-the-Vale-of_Madness-5E.pdf
Info: https://1shotadventures.com/3-lessons-from-solo-adventures/
Booklet: https://1shotadventures.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/DragonsDemise-5E.pdf
Just grab a copy of the SRD/Free rules and either use the included characters or make your own
IIRC they're both level 2~3 or so
liked the first one a bit more, second one needs you to fail a check to actually finish the module IIRC
DMsGuild website also has pay what you want/free D&D materials
There's some great community-made D&D things out there.
My bad didnt realize we cant emote
Im gonna look at it
You can but single character posts can be problematic to our screenreader/text to speech folks (think folks who are blind) trying to follow along with the conversation.
So stick your reacts/emojis/stickers either in line with your text or add them directly to someone's post.
Hi gonna look at it, I’m Nugget
Honnestly would like to see WotC bring back the odd solo module like that
just to test character concepts and maybe as a primer to the game
Dnd show legend of vox machina is just soooo good
I liked the old Acquisitions Incorporated campaign back in the day XD
also the 'The Order Of The Stick' comic (which I really need to catch back up on)
ooh, and Unforgotten Realms
I randomly get Roamin's themesong stuck in my head sometimes
Where would one find the Domain: Nature rules as the 5e 2014 from the PHB are legacy? Have they been “rolled forward” to 5e 2024?
5e.2014 PHB is still the newest incarnation of nature doamain cleric IIRC
That is correct
you now just get all the level 1 and 2 stuff on level 3 instead
But they’re compatible with 2024, just bring the-
Yup!
hello i am new to the server and to DnD where do i start?
Read up on the first few chapters of the free basic rules on #learn-to-play , and feel free to ask any questions you might have.
Once you’re ready and got the fundamentals down, you can check out #find-a-game for information on how to find a group online. To make a post, type the appropriate command in any chat channel.
Ahh… so to use it in character creation, (ie for a Cleric of Skerrit) I’d need a copy of the 2014 PHB not just the 2024 PHB. (Are there other classes like that? Or other books one would need.)
Every class has some subclasses from 2014 that haven’t been reprinted
So as the following hasn’t been updated in 2024 (based on the Adventurers League notes) one would just need PHB [2014]:
• Cleric Subclasses. Nature and Tempest Domain
• Wizard Subclasses. School of Conjuration, Enchantment, Necromancy, and Transmutation
• Feats. Dungeon Delver and Martial Adept
Assuming all those are PHB subclasses and feats, yup!
If you're not using the AL rules, there are a couple extra non reprinted things you can use too
Like the Linguist feat
guys, im making my first character, and i want to know if i am doing something right, ¿where do i send the screenshot so you can tell me easier?
You can host the image on a reputable file/image hosting service (like Google Drive) and post a link to it.
Make sure to explain what the link is when sharing.
If you're using DnDBeyond you can set your character to public and copy the URL to your sheet and that will embed here on our server.
Alright then
Thank You
Ill be doing that in a while tho, i had to go have dinner
is it ok if the background of my kobold character is a soldier ( i'm still new into this )
Yes
As your DM I’d ask you to elaborate on what it means for a kobold to have been a soldier; not because that’s a wrong choice, but because it’d be an interesting conversation about kobold culture and your place in it
i mean he's a soldier not because he is one to begin with when he found a sword of a dead soldier he now thinks of himself as a soldier ( sorry if i cannot explain this properly ).
Hey everyone I’m definitely interested into getting into DnD I’m just pretty socially awkward is DnD easily done over the internet or so?
Is there a place in this server to talk about D&D books/fiction?
?tag new online
Yes! It’s quite common too
Likely #dnd-lore
We even have a #find-a-game to help fellas get a game using this server
Okay sweet I’m reading the recommended channels and it all looks pretty overwhelming haha
Take your time
And don’t be afraid to ask questions
Can someone teach me how to play DND?
Not one-on-one, but I can suggest you read the first two chapters of the Free Basic rules
Free basic D&D rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
And, of course, ask any question you may encounted
I’m making my first character sheet and it’s terrifying how much I don’t understand..
That’s alright! What have you got so far, and what parts are you confused with?
Well, that’s a start…
What class do you wanna be?
Paladin
can someone help me creating a character sheet for a homebrew demon slayer class? I know some of the basics but I still struggle to actually know what to put on the stats and other technical stuff
?tag new abilities
Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
That should cover stats
how was it to determine the stats to level up? because I want to make a character at level 6
Which stat generation method is your table using?
I'm not entirely sure I remember
We use pretty much a basic one probablu
probably*
do you mean on what the class focus?
What stats benefit this class
oh, let me check the pdf I use for this
Dexterity and constitution if I'm not misunderstanding what are you saying
Sorry for the late response, but i recommend prioriting those two stats
So 15 in Dex and 14 in con
The rest are up to you
How do I join a campaign?
Check out #find-a-game
What exactly does the hermit background give me and is it in the 2024 version ?
Usually campaigns and westmarches start around level 3. Others are level 1 and others can be level 5. But id def talk to a dm before making a level 6 character. I most certainly will say map your plan out and hopefully your campaign lasts long enough to make those plans true
Can anyone help me?
Give it a chance especially of the dm was pleasant. First sessions dms aren't gonna throw you a crazy challenge they have to learn your characters first so they can balance right. Especially knowing he has newer players.
Also punctuation helps alot
If you have specific questions I am sure people will help you.
Im sure combat will help pickup. I love strategy in combat.
But yes making choices is a huge part of this game. Rp with your allys is too. Have fun
Yo I have a question I don’t rlly get what stats are for can someone explain?
Ability score*
The Six Abilities Explained.
Strength (STR): Raw physical power, lifting, hitting hard.
Dexterity (DEX): Agility, reflexes, dodging, stealth, precision.
Constitution (CON): Health, stamina, endurance, resisting poison/disease.
Intelligence (INT): Reasoning, knowledge, memory, problem-solving.
Wisdom (WIS): Perception, intuition, common sense, willpower, insight.
Charisma (CHA): Force of personality, persuasion, leadership, intimidation, charm.
I mean like without proficiency and just raw stats doesn’t the lvl 1guy with 1 charisma have the same chance as the lvl 5 guy with 14
Constitution is your hit points so everyone wants that. Dexterity is usually ac so everyone usually wants a bit of that. Everything else is up to you
Where do I find DMs hosting one-shots? The ones I see on #looking-for-players are all for full-pledged campaigns and I wanna try a one-shot first for my first table
Alr ty ☺️🙏
Main question what class are you playing?
Sorcerer
Each class has a specific stat ya might want to invest in
Charisma
So for you invest in charisma
Ik but does it like boost my magic or why ?
Yes and your ability checks out of combat
It raises your attack modifier and your spell save dc.
So if you cast a attack spell like firebolt. Charisma adds to it with profficiency.
If you are asking dm to make a saving throw like mind sliver.
Its 8 + profficiency + spellcasting modifier for the dc
But do my raw stats help me in rolls?
Dm lead me from my grove to an area where I befriended some animals and they helped me defeat some gnolls.
(The players at the table got to play as the animals).
When it was another person's story arc leading into the story. Dm handed us guard sheets and we rpd as guards. He did this for every character until we were all together. So each of us had a little pre story arc in there.
Yes also look at your skills. Strength only has one and the other skills have several.
Wrlp I think I just got done with my doubt so yeah...
The raw stats not directly. The ability score confers an ability modifier, which then gets added to a roll. Explained here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game#TheSixAbilities
Their saying ask the questions you need help with
So my raw stats help win rolls even without proficiency? If u don’t mind could you explain in what way they help ??
Or lose rolls
Most common saving throw is dexterity and con
So as a sorcerer you will have con save profficiency
As in the link I sent, Ability Scores confer a modifier which gets applied to a d20 Test
Alr I get it tysm
But also not have dex save profficiency
So a Strength (Athletics) check would still add your Strength modifier even if you don't have proficiency in it, for example
Correct so when you roll for a attack or a saving throw or a check
You add your ability modifier, then if you are profficient. You add your profficiency with this.
Oh Alr so if I have proficiency in persuasion and my ability modifier is +1 and my proficiency is +2 I get a total of +3 on my roll
Yes
I would say definitely have charisma as your highest stat or second highest at the very least
If your playing a sorcerer
It’s my highest
I have 17 because I choose to dump Lwk almost everything in charisma
Each class page also has a recommended stat priority. For the most part I agree with the BR’s recommendations
Elo
Up to you of course Then id make con or dex second highest
Con is second highest and my 3rd best is wisdom because I choose hermit as background so I can heal if I have the healers kit or wtv it’s called
You can dump strength you are fine
Im new 🙂
Wis saving throws will be good for you then
Ty for helping 🙏
Perception is like the most rolled check
So wis is good for anyone... Just expect to get hit alot with low ac
👍
Passive perception also helps you not getting snuck up on. It applies same way 8 + profficiency + ability modifier
So basically if a enemy rolls a 13 stealth and you have a 12 passive they can essentially surprise attack you. So its good to have wisdom.
Can I add you if I need help ?
Yes no worries
Just know that ac is low if you dump dex because sorcerers dont get armor. So its normally mage armor which is 13 + dex. Would 100% add "shield" to your spells. Just so ya dont die from getting hit so often.
Was planning to do that but now it’s 100% on my list ty
Mage armor or shield?
Shield
Gotcha yeah its definitely a wizard/sorcerer specialty
Maybe not now... but maybe like level 4-5ish absorb elements also very good for defensive capabilities.
Absorb elements?
Shouldn't have to deal with too much elemental damage around level 1-3
100 fire damage absorb (resistant for a round) so 100 equals 50
200 equals 100 etc
You essentially half the damage of a elemental type
Coming at you.
I meant nrver heard of that is it a spell ?
Yes
But shouldn't havw to deal with that too much level 1-3
Level 4-5 dms may test ya with some elemental stuff.
Oh Alr do I have to do something to get absorb elements or do I get it at lvl 4/5 automatically
Sorcerers are very very limited on their spells.
No it’s smt you can get lvl 1
Im saying don't waste a spell known right now for absorb elements
It’s a spell you can choose to get
Shouldn't need it truly for levels 1-3
But its a spell you must get at higher levels of play
Will save your life 100%
Alr what spells should I choose for lvl 1 ?
I dont play sorcerer cause of very limited spells. How many choices you have 2?
So id go shield and maybe a concentration spell.
Idk yet still setting up my character
Firebolt for cantrip
Ok how many cantrips do I have ?
Well you are a sorcerer so you don't have that many spells known but I think you do have the most cantrips
So 4 at level 1. When everyone else gets like 2
Okay can you recommend me some chops ones ?
Would 100% say presdigitation and a attacking spell
Firebolt probably for the attacking onr
Presdigitation is a top flavorful spell along with minor illusion
Shocking grasp for melee
Firebolt for distance predigitation and you choose last one
Should I pick up magic hand ?
Just dont choose true strike lol
Its useful... especially with traps but... I mean its useful as much as you make it useful
Thats a 1st level spell
Not a cantrip... cantrips you can pop off all day long
Leveled spells get them and thats it
For range id go chill touch or firebolt
Okay but what does concentration spell do ?
Also ya dont have to go shocking grasp. You can always go mind sliver
Let's you hold onto a spell for the period of time the spell sais. You can only concentrate on one spell at a time. Monster or pc
So burning hands is like one and done right.
But expeditious retreat is a concentration spell
I’m not quite following
Ok so you have cantrips right
Yup
4 of them I can just spam em
At level 1 only 2 leveled spells
Only 2 known as a sorcerer.
So if ya choose shield.... well that shield is a one time casting and ends next round
Where as expeditious retreat lasts 10 minutes
Each round is 6 seconds
Each combat is around 3-5 rounds
So expeditious retreat is like.... 100 rounds of combat
Some spellls that take a duration require you to concentrate on keep the spell active. You can still act, but getting hit (and failing the ensuing saving throw) or casting another spell that requires concentration can break the concentration you have on your spell, which ends its effects
You can only concentrate on one thing also at a time
And what spell would yall recommend and can I use cantrips while I’m concentrating on a spell
Yes of course
I personally put alot of investment into defense early on. Cause its so easy to die at low level
So id recommend expeditious retreat to run the heck away
Pelt people with your firebolt or chill touch
Shield and expeditious retreat for me....
For you it could be mage armor ya get to wear all day
Mage armor is actually probably the better choice here
I would choose expeditious retreat but I already have fay step
A +3 to ac all day is better then +5 one time
Fey step?
You can use that what twice?
Mb miss spelled yes fay step
I think so but I think after a short rest I can use it again right ?
Not sure but thats twice
Allowing you to do it outside of retreat so thats nice
Im just saying 120 feet is alot of range for cantrips. You are a squishy easy to hit spellcaster. If ya get out of harms way it'll definitely help you
So should I get expeditious retreat
You can always get comprehend languages for flavor. Up to you
Ya dont have to cast comprehend languages. Ya can ritual cast it so it doesn't take a spell slot
Id say mage armor and another spell
What's your dex?
I think I’ll go finish setting up my character and when I’m at the spells and shit I’ll get back to you is that okay
I mean you don’t have to help if you don’t want to but I would be happy if you did 🥹
I mean... there is a first level spell that auto hits
Hello new here
If you absolutely need to get a guy down
12 +1
Goooood morning afternoon evening, Wahzzup!
You dont necessary have to concentrate on spells. Especially early level. It just helps in doing so
So mage armor would give you a ac all lll day of 14
Your ac is 10 now.
Or 11?
So I’m 100% gonna take mage armor ty
Good morning friend my name is lord and I am looking for friends so I can learn an play DnD
Remember to cast it as soon as you wake up each day. Or elves dont sleep so whenever you finish a longrest.
But is make armor +14 or does it set it to 14?
This is not a combat spell.
You can try #looking-for-community or #looking-for-players if you wanna find a game.
This is a hey im awake spell
Thank you.
It'll set your armor to 14 for the whole day
Pickup shield later down the road
Alr but is mage armor like +14 ac or does it just set ac to 14
Set to 14
Oh w
Basically, it changes your AC calculation to 13+dex mod
Sets it to 14. So dm level 1 will have a +3-+5 hit attack roll against you
So he at least needs to roll a 9-11
Giving you a 45% chance to not get hit? I think the math is right on that
Enemy still has 55% very good chance but ... still helps
Okay so should I choose silvery barbs and magic amor ?
Def not
Silvery is a one time casting
Wouldn't worry about that right now.
You have only 2 spells for the day (idk how short rests work with sorcerers)
Later levels def pickup spells like shield, absorb elements, maybe silvery
But sorcerers are very very limited on spells
So have to be very choosy.
Okay so I’m thinking absorb elements and magic Amore
Its just what they can do with those spells with metamagic is what makes them epic
Im getting ahead of myself and you lol. Sorry
Id go shield and mage armor. Or expeditious retreat and mage armor
Elements won't come into play unless dms throwing goblin bombs at you. Ya won't see that kinda stuff till like level 3+
Alr can you explain what expeditious retreat does ?
You and allies can dash as a bonus action
Normally you can dash as a action. Unless you're a monk or rogue
Dashing as a bonus action allows you to get the heck away
You have a 120 foot ranged cantrip
Meaning survive and get away lol
Kill them forever away
So dash away and spam fire bolt ?
You basically now have 60 foot of movement is what expeditious retreat does
Or chill touch yes
Look.... dm can attack barbarian 4 times and he's still up
Squishy sorcerer can go down with one attack
But just so I’m 100% sure magic armor and expeditious retreat right
Just remember to apply mage armor the beginning of the day
Its a 8 hour spell....
Alr
If you adventure past 8 hours you are dealing with exhaustion etc. So 90% + im sure of adventures are within a 8 hour day. (Ic) so that mage armor will last you the entirety of the day
I mean... magic missile is also a opti9n
If your allys and you are just sucking at attack rolls. Magic missile is auto hit
I think I’ll stick to defens at first
Sounds good survivability lol
Once you get to metamagic you will start having alot of fun
Can do more with your spells then any other class
The other spellcasters just get more spell options... but you as the sorcerer make those spells 10x better.
Just survive to 3-5 and let metamagic reign. But yeah for now survive
With magicmeta or wtv ist called right ?
Meta magic I mean 🤦♂️
Yes you can cast action spells as a bonus action. You can twin cast spells... you can do all kinds of things
Sounds awesome 🤩
A spell that lasts 10 minutes is now lasting 20 or a hour etc
Yeah sorcerers have very limited choices however can go crazy with those choices. Have fun with it
Hey guys! New comer here looking to explore and maybe get my feet wet a little bit, I'm brand new like pickup a game at the store "this looks cool" kinda new, I'm wondering if there might be someone or a group willing to take me under there wing? I'm not looking for some one and done type of thing, I'm hoping to find someone or a group that's willing to help me learn and grow, also does anyone have any tips on how to create a toon? Or any tips? Thanks
You could try looking around in #find-a-game for a beginner friendly group
Or #looking-for-community for a beginner friendly server
As for learning the game…
Read up on the first few chapters of the free basic rules on #learn-to-play , and feel free to ask any questions you might have.
Once you’re ready and got the fundamentals down, you can check out #find-a-game for information on how to find a group online. To make a post, type the appropriate command in any chat channel.
@frail condor So what dice are you looking for. you said you want dices. do you want phyiscal dice, the dice you use in dnd. (like a general question), or digital dice.
The dices in dnd are:
d4, d6, d8, d10, d12 and d20. (There’s also a d100 but it’s usually represented through two d10’s). Btw, a d6 is a six sided dice, and so on.
All of these can be used online or bought in person, usually at a games store
Yep, theres many digital dice things online, dndbeyond, google, or other websites, most VTT's have them too. Physical dice you have to buy, or have a player at the table let you burrow theirs (if you play IRL)
Or more accurately: sorcerer go wack
I prefer wizards. We get magic just by being nerds. No need to deal with trying not to explode every 5 seconds
I mean that's only wild magic sorcerer tho
You don't get magic by being autistic. I rest my case.
You don’t?!!! /hj
Sorcerers don't. Wizards get magic just by nerding out and I just think that's neat
Druids get magic from hobbying out. "Wanta go see a watertall" nature calls i think thats neat.
aaaaaa you guys, I made an oopsie
Ope
I signed up for two campaigns at once (just expressed my interest) and both DMs messaged me at the same time. One of them was for a full-pledged campaign, and the other was for a one-shot for newbies. I excused myself from the other one, thinking they were the one with the campaign and talked to the latter. However, I just realized I got both of them mixed up haha...
Guh-
Worst part is that I just realized I can't make it to the campaign's set schedule
Is this what it feels rolling a one
I'll talk to the campaign DM, but the oneshot just started half an hour ago
Man, I missed my shot at a table 😢
Just asking this but when I make an attack and it say +5 to hit do I need to roll higher than a 5 and the targets AC in that one roll?
A +5 to hit means you add 5 to whatever you rolled on the d20
And that total number needs to be equal or bigger the monsters AC to hit
So say for example an ochre jelly hits a player with an AC of 18 the ochre jelly needs to roll a 13 to hit
Yes
Great I'm asking because I didn't understand it and I have a session planned soon
hi guys my little brother is obsessed with dungeons and dragons and keeps asking me to play but i’ve not a clue whatsoever on how this game works, can anyone help me out? i really wanna surprise him because he loves it so much and has been begging me for a while lol

Hey fella I’m DMing for my group at school next semester and it’s my first time being a dm for a campaign.ive done one shots but never campaigns.any tips?
Hi does anyone have some tips for a first time dm?
Just playing with friends
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
Hi guys, quick question, is it a common scam in these discord dnd circles to have people dm you asking you to join their games, but then asking you to pay for an artist or something like that? Or is that a normal thing?
It's a scam!
Even beyond the scam, it’s weird to imagine someone you’ve never played with before to pay for an artist commission 😭
Character dynamic concept:
Wizard that thinks sorcerers are nepo babies who get off too easy+ Sorcerer that got kicked out of or rejected from magic school because they couldn't control their inherent magic
Sorcerer: “I’m so powerful, I can’t control my magic.”
Wizard: “The second part of that statement is true, you filthy casual.”
The wizard should be an NPC and the sorcerer's rival and bitter enemy since they both competed to get into magic school. The wizard made it, the sorcerer didn't
If the sorcerer character has a personal questline, the final boss should be the wizard
Or you make the sorcerer just naturally magic prone, while the wizard spent their entire life perfecting their magical abilities and never got in to magic school 😭
Like there was one spot remaining and the naturally great sorcerer got it instead
It’s a valid crash out for the wizard if they decide to become a villain
hey I'm new to dnd i would love to play a game if possible
Wizard: Sorcerers are such nepo babies, they don't even need to study for their magic:
Sorcerer: I am on the verge of literally exploding every 5 seconds because someone decided that screwing a dragon was a good idea
Wizards just copied down some cheatcode to make stuff blow up.
Clerics and paladins cheated and got a god to do magic for them.
Sorcerers are nepo babies.
Arcane trickster rogues, eldritch knight fighters, etc. are martial classes with the "magic" just there as a flex.
Artificers think a gun is considered magic.
I love artificers
Warlock idea. When the warlock was younger, there was an ongoing war between two fey courts, one clearly more benevolent than the other, without the character's knowledge. While just exploring, the character rescued a fey without knowing they were a fey (from the morally better side). After their court won their war, the fey granted them magic as thanks for saving them. There is an underlying reason for the pact, however; having been through war, they want to regain their sense of adventure again through the view of the warlock's eyes.
any games running tonight?
Might want to talk about character idea in https://discord.com/channels/516367331358801950/604757656565055589
Hi there, everyone! Is the guy who usually runs the Begginer’s D&D nights in the channel?
there's a beginners D&D nights on this discord?
Nope, there is not.
thought so
Please note that we, the official D&D Discord server run by Wizards of the Coast (makers of D&D), do not host D&D games on this server.

Hello everyone! I'm new here and to dnd in general! I would love to find a game tailored to my wants. I've tried to understand the posting system but genuinely got confused based on the idea of game I want to join. I'm looking for a solarpunk themed game, and genuinely don't know which channel to post on to find it! Just needing a bit of guidance and patience, thank you!
Look through #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community for game posts that reference solarpunk (or perhaps sci-fi?) and see what shows up.
Thank you!
You could also try typing /looking-for dm then filling out the form that will pop up
Yeah that way you can advertise that you're looking for a game and you can specify what kind of D&D games you prefer
Okay that makes allot more sense to me! I appreciate it a ton! Thank you for the help!
i really want to get into D&D and find a long term group but idk where to start
try the #looking-for-players and maybe the #looking-for-community , there's no guarantee of it going well for you but always worth a shot.

does anyone know if there are limits or restrictions on crossing races? I really want a half firbolg tiefling and not sure if i can?
is there ANY way to get dnd for free
or a fey touched tiefling firbolg
Yes dnd is free
Ya just might not have access to all the newer stuff
Still free tho.
like a ful flegged campain i can do online with my friends
Yes create a server and add avrae
Then add friends.
The free rules (check the pinned messages) is all you need to start to play D&D
You could say youre half from 2 races but generally unless discussed with the dm you would pick the abilties from one of the races
Hey guys. About to play my first campaign soon! What should I have with me when I'm actually playing, other than my character sheet
If you're in person, dice

Hey so I’m DM’ing for the first time.
Any tips?

To add on to these: communication is key for any issues or boundaries at the table
Being lenient is also pretty important as dm (I know that sounds like being flexible but I sorta mean, letting them get away with stuff for the sake of fun)
Okay thanks!
I’ll take note of that and read some videos.
I’m struggling a little bit with how to run the story and make sure the group don’t miss too much.
And combat and world building.
I appreciate those tips!
I see
A positive and enthusiastic attitude!
Assuming you know the rules...
Grab a pre-written adventure (plenty are on DMsGuild), do some reading/watching (I'd recommend the Quickstart Guide, the DM section of the Basic Rules starting here, and this Ginny Di video), and dive in! If you want additional homework, I'd recommend plucking whatever seems useful from Matt Colville's "Running the Game" series. At least watch the first handful of his videos!
My suggestions are here: #dm-discussion message You can also search the server for "dm advice" and/or "dm tips". This topic comes up all the time!
There are plenty of videos, documents, etc on each of your issues if you have a look on YouTube? The free rules (or DMG if you have it) also go over most the basics of combat and story/worldbuilding.
If you need more specific help #dm-discussion is always available, though I recommend reading through the free rules first as it answers a lot of things for you
hello, I am new to dnd, and Im a little confused. I wanted to find a dnd game for me and my friend and Im confused as to how to find a game channels mean, like, wt exactly is looking for community?
hey so i have a session with new players today, one of these player is in another group of mine just starting lmop, i dont want to play something hes alrdy played, so coming here to ask if anyone wld have any simple campaigns i could run with this group, ig a one shot or a simple campaign like lmop
Community games are things like no set DM or group of players, Westmarch games, or more than normal numbers of players and DMs (typical D&D games have 1 DM and 3-6 players).
DMsGuild website has pay what you want/free D&D adventures
any recommendatioms?
I've heard good things about Wild Sheep Chase: https://winghornpress.com/adventures/a-wild-sheep-chase/
Haven't run it myself
Maybe check with folks in #dm-discussion channel for suggestions for good 1 shot adventures

Hi. My friend and I are wanting to learn how to play DnD. But were absolutely complete noobs, to the point we just know rolling a 20 is good and that's about it. We've read the rules and all but were still wondering what would be the best way to actually join a campaign that would fit us as we are starting from zero
I am a bit newer to dnd
Just got my player handbook myself but learned how to play awhile ago
I am eyeing “Tasha’s caldron of everything”
Is it too advanced or could I just get it now
It's a good book IMO - while it's built on top of the 2014 rules (not for the recent 2024 updates), it provides more character options and optional rules a DM can use and as 2024 updates are "forward compatible" (meaning you can take 2014 things and bring them into a 2024 materials game with little adjustments needed) it should continue to be useful and usable.
Now that your group has a decent idea of the game, check out #find-a-game for useful tips for finding a game and important information on how to use our Looking For Game channels. You might find a DM looking for a group in #looking-for-players. Also there's #looking-for-community for other D&D servers looking for DMs and players to join their community.
Also check out #learn-to-play and the free basic rules to help with your learning of the game
Completely new to dnd here. I have somewhat gotten a really strong feeling of wanting to try this game. The idea of getting with a group, roleplaying and just having fun is what got me on the hook. I've downloaded the free basic rule book on the app and skimmed through it a bit and I've watched a whole lot of beginner videos today so I somewhat got a sense of the "basics". My two issues are 1: I have no one that I know of that has played it before besides one that played a one-shot once. I am fully okay with the idea of gathering a whole new group and "struggling through" the first few playthroughs. Since this would be a group with almost no experience of dnd we would have to pick a dm, however I personally could try it because I believe I have somewhat good imagination and I like to foreshadow events so that "shouldn't" be much of problem. 2: What to buy. I know there are digital copies and VTT is a thing but I think this group would much rather like to try the physical version of things (I also much more prefer it that way and the books and stuff are cool). Now I've come across the different starter sets. The ones for 5e and the one for 5.5e that came out somewhat recently. Now I haven't looked up the 5e that much but I have read and checked some videos for the heroes of the borderland starter set. The higher price is not much of an issue but two things that had me thinking was the fact that it seems incredibly simplified which is both an upside and a downside (I think) and the second thing being that the adventures/quest seem very disjointed and don't follow a linear storyline which some enjoy and some don't. I personally enjoy stories that are focused on a more linear story, with side quest of course, rather than a few short quest here and there.
- Check out #find-a-game , that might help you with that
- I’ve heard some good things about the 2024 (5.5e) one
You don’t need to spend very much on dnd tho
Heck, you can play it for free
Agree on the “you don’t need to buy anything” sentiment, but maybe let them finish their thought!
-# wait their thought wasn’t finished? Mb
No worries, the thought has been going on for hours with very little sleep so it is a bit difficult to summarise in short text 😅 . The gathering of a group shouldn't be too hard. I have some friends that would I think would be down to try it if I asked. The thing about buying things is, well.. How should I say. I think it would be more "immersive". Of course it is up to the dm to make it immersive with compelling narration and storytelling, but also the idea to own it physically is there. While the 5.5e seems very good, it feels too simplified. It is of course for beginners, but it is only a small piece of the whole. Also when you take into account the phb, dmg and mm which feels like must have when you start getting into the bigger stuff, and that is a whole lot of reading.
too summarise it in the shortest form: I don't know where to begin
If you all haven’t played before, the 2024 starter set might be a worthwhile investment for a few reasons: it’ll let you test it out to decide if you actually like the game enough to buy the 3 core rulebooks; it encourages rotation of DM duties, which I appreciate; and it does a lot of heavy lifting to onboard new folks.
#learn-to-play is always a good start. Read through the first two chapters of the free rulees
I wouldn’t present D&D as a big commitment to start with. Try it out, and if folks want more, there’s so many ways to provide it, whether you spend money or not.
I guess I'll try out the 5.5e one then. I think I've googled "best way to start dnd" over ten times today hoping for a more compelling answer each time (thedefinitionofinsanityisdoingthesamethingoverandoverexpectingdifferentresults
). I suppose I just needed to hear it from an actual person and not the google ai thing that keeps popping up (why is that even a thing). Though there is one thing I didn't understand. "it encourages rotation of DM duties". In which way is that incentivized?
The separation of adventure components into separate books in the box and calling it out explicitly in the materials.
I’m new to D&D (I have only played one game so far), and the day after the first game, I thought about becoming a necromancer but don’t know how to be. I started as a wizard because I like magic, but I now kind of want to be a necromancer. Can someone help?
See this D&D Beyond article for a little more context: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/2062-behind-the-screen-tips-for-running-heroes-of-the
Necromancer is a wizard subclass, so you can do both! Just wait till level 3
In the 2014 version of the rules, you can be a wizard with the necromancer subclass. In 2024, you can use the 2014 version until they make a new one.
I see. Well then, I guess I'll give it a shot. One last thing. What would you recommend after that? I don't have much preference being dm or player in the sense of "gameplay" but what type of activity would you say would be the best. I'd love to play a full campaign but I heard that is quite the commitment (one I personally would be ready for, at least mentally) and would I have to acquire the phb, dmg and mm for such an activity?
Thanks for the help. Also, can I be a necromancer AND learn time magic? Because in any game that has magic, I always check if it has the ability to control time as an ability, because I just like controlling time.
Depends on what spells your DM allows. So the answer is a hard maybe.
Okay, thanks for the help.
That’s up to you. A lot of folks recommend being a player before being a long-term DM, for solid reasons, but that isn’t necessary. It also depends on your situation. If you dearly want to play in person but you don’t have many avenues to find others to game with, you might be out of luck finding another table as a player. Being the DM massively increases the odds of a game happening.
The core books are handy, but not essential. You can get a lot of mileage out of the free rules. Still, the PHB would be the best investment, whether you are a player or a DM, if you suspect you’ll stick with the game for a good long while.
We'll just have to see I guess. Thanks for the help and sorry for posting such long text. It's taking up a lot of headspace so.
This is a good place for questions!
Hey how should I look for a good time because reading through the looking for players they all look really confusing and I don't know what most of it means like how we play I get that cuz it's like discord voice but I don't understand like the E5 and all that stuff how should I know if it's a good thing or not like what should I look for
5e is the edition of the game. Dungeons and Dragons 5th edition, which is the most recent and most played version of the game. So thats the good thing, thats what you want. If you see 2014, its the original rules for 5th edition and 2024 are the updated rules, which of the two is better is usually just preference so either are good options for you. For the other stuff like Roll 20, VTT, Dnd Beyond, these are websites where you will make and use your character and move your it on maps. Again, these are preferences but any are good. I personally prefer roll 20 and Dnd Beyond
Okay anything I should look for while trying to find a session
Every game will have their differences as every dungeon master likes to run their games certain ways which may vary from dm to dm. So feel free to message one of them and tell them you are new and ask for help on things you don't understand about their post
The time of course, find something that works with your schedule. The style of game, some games are going to have more roleplay and less combat. Others are going to have a mix of both. For the full experience I would recommend going for something that has a mix of both. But again this depends on what you are looking for in dnd. As I mentioned, roll 20 and dnd beyond are what I use and I think they are easy to use so these are good options for you. But I heard Foundry VTT is very good too. Some posts can say that they will be one shots (which mean it will be 1 or 2 session long only) and some will say are campaigns (which are months long sometimes) and are a bigger commitment, again, this depends on what you look for
Homebrew means it is unofficial content and rules created by players. Sometimes homebrew is a very small part of some games, sometimes its a very big part of some games. For a first time, I would recommend going for a game that has little to no homebrew
And unfortunately you need to be fast on the trigger to reply to these posts because a lot of players reply to them very fast, but dont let that prevent you from reaching out because you never know if theres still spots available
would an unarmed bladesinger work?
Nothing in bladesinger mentions needing a weapon, so yeah that works
Hi everyone! I'm new to Dungeons and Dragons and would like some advice for it! I'm getting two starter sets for christmas, and would like to play it with my family. Even though I have done some research, I feel that dungeon master sounds really fun, and it seems like a really good way to not only teach myself, but also my family when playing with them. I have watched a bunch of videos and understood most of it, but I still dont know how it will feel irl. Anyone have any tips or important things to know? (Knowing that I want to teach my family and want to be a DM)
Hi, honestly since im assuming this is your first time and your families, just make a story and build a world you like
The first time is always hectic and its gonna be a lot of improvising
But its so fun getting used to the first time
I knowww!
It feels like such a fun thing to do and play!
Just be ready to adjust is definitely the most important thing
It is trust me
Sure!
Do you know the term “railroading”
Its when you force your party to a specific path/story
Oh
Its ok in small registered amounts to keep the story but its good to let your party be free to do stuff
Guys I got like a starter set thing a few days ago and I've watched videos and read through the guide and I genuinely cannot understand anything which die is for what how do I figure any of this stuff out beyond the stuff specifically outlined on the cards😭
Ok, so i should'nt do it too much?
a good way to keep a party on trak is with natural challenges they cant overcome, such as they cant leave the city because its to dangerous
Yes, the party needs to feel like its their world to change, but you still should try and keep the original story
I hope you have a good time!
Just be open to chaos because the first time is always wild
Tysm! You hepled a bunch!
the d20 is what is used for any ability check, attack roll or saving throws. It is the most important dice. If a character wants to do something that requires an effort, they must roll a d20 and add the appropriate bonuses. The other dice are mostly for different damage, healing or other kind of rolls.
A dagger does 1d4 damage
A short shortsword does 1d6 damage
A longsword does 1d8 damage when held in one hand, but 1d10 damage when held with two hands
Spells' dice vary a lot
Am I answering your question correctly?
Thank you😭 Theres a lot of stuff I'm confused about but I'll try to figure it out as I go on DMing since my friends and I plan on playing like next week💔
Do you have other questions?
If a character wants to attack a goblin with their dagger, they must roll a d20 first and add their attack roll modifier which will be their dexterity modifier + their proficiency modifier and it will need to be higher than the goblin's armor class in order to hit. If it hits, the player will need to roll 1d4 and add their dexterity modifier to determine the damage they deal. For example
But also how do I know what dice a certain card uses?😭 I dont think its stated on the card
Wait nevermind its on the front of the card LMFAO
I was looking at the wrong side of the "mace" card
Ah I see
It says "heroes of the borderlands" at the bottom of the box cover? Does that help?
I see, yeah thats the newest starter set they released recently
I dont have it myself, but I hear its very good
The adventure things look neat but I dont really know how the story progression works
Do I just go along with what the players wanna do?😭
The story points should be numbered and they should be leading to next numbers and help form a path towards the next ones. They should also give hints to help you deal with what players might want to do in each situation
but feel free to create a small story of your own if you feel up for it. I think theres a lot of stuff in there to support that and you can take inspiration. Something as simple as the party was hired to help escort a wagon to the next city but they get attacked along the way by goblins. You could give the party hints that they hear noise in the forest and you make them roll perception checks to see if they can see something hiding. If they see them, then maybe they can get the drop on the goblins
If combat starts and the goblins start losing, maybe one of them runs away. If the party follows that goblin, they see that the goblin enters a cave and you could make all kinds of dangers in that cave. If you want you could have the goblin steal something from the wagon before running away and the person who hired you could be telling the party that he needs what the goblin stole
so you really could make up anything if you are having difficulty understanding how the adventure booklet is written
Thats actually awesome tysm😭
I spent 80 dollars on this mf I am determined to have fun with it
The important is to set up things in this imaginary world for your players to interact with. And improvise along the way. Best advice is be ready for anything. Sometimes players have difficulty getting the dungeon master's hint of where to go next, and if they want to explore that forest and leave that wagon behind, go for it and explore that option
Yeah definetely. First time I played I didnt understand the rules and I made stuff up as I went. My player didnt know the rules either but we both had fun. I was planning ahead a little bit, but there was always improvisation which is fun. You are not telling a story to your players, you are telling one with them which is all the fun of this game
and in that starter set theres a ton of fun stuff to play and mess around with
One last question: Do I need a certain amount of players to begin and do stuff normally or could I just get one friend and mess around with him cause I'm not sure I hace friends (plural) that would wanna play 😭
Yeah you can play with only 1 player. I didnt say player plural in my message above yours lol, I started off by player with only one player too and it was great. And it hooked me and now im a dnd nerd
I played npcs that were on an adventure with him so that he wasn't too lonely. Like maybe you could play a sidekick that follows your player around
and maybe if your player is about to do something really really dangerous and he doesnt know, the sidekick character could be the voice of reason and warn them of the dangers instead of coming from you directly
Soo for example, he's trying to go into a cave that he's guaranteed to die in, so I could use an npc to influence him and get him to go somewhere else?😭
yeah of course, or if there are no npcs around, you could say "As you are about to enter the cave, you notice streaks of red of the cave walls" or "You hear a faint crunching and growl noise deeper in the cave"
Creative freedom🥹
But also the fun of it is to go along with what the player wants to do, let him explore that cave and show him that it is dangerous (if you want the cave to be dangerous). Maybe he fights a monster in there, only to realise that it was one of many monsters that are lurking and he has to make the decision to keep going to find whats down there, or to leave
But if you dont have anything planned and you're not ready and he is going of course, you can use those examples to make him second guess entering the cave
anything goes
exactly. And messing up rules is completely fine too, the rules arent going to say thank you for following them to a T. They are there to guide and to help
And personally, I like thinking about adventure ideas from just looking at the monster list or pictures
Is there any non one-shot campaign podcasts/Shows in which a player played an artificer
Definitely, but I'm the last person to know. Any help?
Probably more of a general topic than a newcomer one though
whats the best way to start playing D&D never played before but im really interested.
The best way? Varies but I'd suggest becoming familiar with at least the free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
We also have #learn-to-play that has useful information and resources.
Maybe watch folks playing D&D via YouTube/Twitch streams.

Feel free to ask questions here as you run into things
Many in our community are happy to answer specific questions
I'm in the process of building my back up character for my first campaign is it best to point buy or to roll for stats?
How do i create a looking for dm
If you're just starting, go with point buy
Rolling is risky, and not allowed by some DM's, and those that do allow it generally will want to witness the rolls
I personally suggest standard array but point buy works too
More freedom but you have to slightly know what you're doing first
Type /looking in this channel, pick the DM option from the suggestions, hit Enter.
You'll get a form to fill out. Do your best to look like a player folk would want to invite to their games, and don't forget your timezone and availability. Good luck!

If you’d like to use this server to find a group check out the instructions in #find-a-game!
Okay thank you!
Thanks @harsh fjord too
Yes, check out the find familiar spell
Oooh, are there actions, then, dedicated to Familiars? L
What do you mean by that?
Like, can I command them to retrieve something for me, attack an enemy, help me cast a spell, etc.?
They can't make attacks per se (although they can be the source location of where you cast a spell).
There are certain classes which can use them to attack, though
See the Find Familiar spell: https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/2618877-find-familiar
The familiar is an ally to you and your allies. It rolls its own Initiative and acts on its own turn. A familiar can’t attack, but it can take other actions as normal.
what does 'Concentration, up to 1 minute' mean?
does it last only 1 minute or 1 minute after concentration is broken?
until 1 minute (10 rounds) passes or until concentration is broken; whichever happens first
caster could also technically choose to drop concentration as a free action if they intend to cast another concentration spell or just in general for any reason really
ah ok thanks.
What is a fun race and class to play and mess with friends n party ?
Mess with how?
You'll need to be a bit more specific. One person's fun ("Tee hee, I hid your arcane focus!") can get a person removed from a game.
could someone tell me if my spell list good? im first time playing as a sorcerer so i had to look at every spell for a long time lol
i currently have (starting at lvl 3)
fire bolt
minor illusion
ray of frost
sorcerous burst
magic missile
shield
silvery barbs
misty step
suggestion
web
i also get alter self, chromatic orb, dragons breath and command from my draconic lineage subclass
Seems like a fair mix.
would drop one more of the damaging cantrips for utility ones maytbe, but otherwise very solid
you think drop ray of frost then?
Id say you can leave out sorcerous burst maybe or ray of frost or firebolt.
What's the difference between a sorcerer and a wizard ?
You have no melee cantrips like shocking grasp. As well as no flavorful presdigitation
could replace it with like pretidigitation or elementalism, mage hand is also good
wizards are nerds that need to study, sorcerers can do their magic because they can /j
Wizard can eventually know every spell. Can only prep different ones daily tho.
Sorcerer is very limited and only knows a handful of spells. But they can bend those spells and twist them in ways no other class can do
Am so confused rn
?
Wizards have to read to learn spells and create magic.
Sorcerers are innately magical
Wizards have to learn new spells daily and sorcerer are born with it ?
So sorcerers are just nepo baby’s?
basically hard work vs innate prodigy type of classes
They start with a boost. They still have to practice (i.e. go on adventures) to get better.
No wizards with a infinite amount of money.... can essentially learn every spell. You can only prep a certain amount of spells per day.
So nepo baby that doesn’t act like a nepo baby
I see I see
What's a nepo baby?
nepotism
Born with merits or advantages
You get daddy’s money as a baby
A filmstars son is a nepo baby
Idk if ||Ron Jeremy|| son is a nepo baby
All classes can do anything but your role matters the most ?
As I see most sorcerers play nobles anyway. Or some sort of sage character. Yeah seems like it
No all classes do not do anything
So I can't use magic as a fighter?
you can
Or basic magic spells ?
Not quite. Some classes have more range than others, suiting them to better to certain roles. A rogue, for instance, makes a good striker but might struggle to exert battlefield control.
subclass into eldritch knight is a way to cast magic
You can either with feats, magic items, or multiclassing
or Arcane Knight subclass or w/e it's called
eldritch knight with booming blade is a good strategy for eldritch knight to run iirc
Take the magic initiate feat, that's the easy way.
Role is whatever you make it. Could be the Swiss army knife versatile person that can fill every need modestly.
Could be my job is damage
My job is healing
My job is tanking
My job is battlefield control
Or you dont have to give yourself a role and ya can just go have fun with that character
or new true strike
There is still a lot to learn 😔
You generally have:
- Front Liner/Single Target damage expert
- AOE Specialist/Spellcaster
- Support Spellcaster (heals/utility/cc/etc)
- skills cahracter (rogue/bard/etc)
But to be real... if you are truly wanting mischief. Then get a race that can get passwithout trace. Go arcane rogue.
My brain just fried itself looking at this text
Rogues sneak not even the dm can see you coming at times. Your players definitely wont
How can I have fun with a Ranger class ?
You don’t
I will throw no shade.....m
Ranger likes exploration campaigns
can be either the support, front line, or the skills character also
Pass without trace
Ranger that bad ? , first thing my dm said after knowing I chose ranger is ew 😔
As well as druidcraft making animal noises or growling noises around the campfire
Sorry your DM said that, that response seems a bit rude
So... its whole flavor is just outclassed
Want to sneak? Rogue and druid do it better
I just don’t like the how little options rangers get
Want to use archery? Fighter does that better
Want to explore? Druid does that better
Rangers are good and fun, especially with the 2024 revisions as well as the optional rules Tasha’s book released for 2014
I think rangers are fine, and got better in 24. They've got range, so to speak.
Archery
Exactly
Ranger has NOTHING special💔
Its just outclassed for its purposeful role
I don't like the frontlines fighting type things , support is my type
Fighter is also ranger
Ranger can fulfill that fantasy quite well
Support is your type go bard
Archery also sounds fun
There are many other options as well that focus more support, or can be focused to support more
I think you would enjoy trying Ranger then
So I can snipe enemies
Do you know if your game will be using the 2014 or 2024 ruleset?
Well run it just dont ask a community if "ranger is good idea" if you want a honest answer. Its a good class. Every class can ge good essentially. Especially when your campaign gets inside your favored terrain thats huge.
Or fighting your favored foe
Idk , whatever the dm decides , he is is only one skilled , all others are new
Unless you can attach a healing item to an arrow idk how rangers a support maybe im just not smart enough
I think it’s a stretch to say someone saying “Ranger is a good idea” is dishonest.
They have healing word and can pickup moon sickle and healing spirit i think. Def wouldn't call ranger support but support adjacent
Yeah I’m not smart enough to understand this
Support is much more than just heals. Debuffs, buffs, battlefield control, etc are all other forms of support
Healing word I assume means you can heal using a vocal spell/incant I assume?
Healing Word is a spell
My b
You count debuff and battlefield control as support?
Debuff is easily support
I view support as "aura of life" amd healing or enlarge reduce etc
We can create our own spells too right ?
In 70% of games anyone who can use debuffs mostly are counted as support
No, you’re limited by the official spells. You could work with your DM to homebrew but I don’t recommend it for newbies
Oh ok I guess Druids are up there then. I just viewed druids as battlefield controllers and second best healers. But if battlefield control counts as support then I guess I play support as well
Always worth reading the actual spell details (looking at you, chill touch) but yes, healing word only has a Verbal component.
Druids are definitely supports
Not a good day to be illiterate
our dm is skilled
Btw what does homebrew mean?
Essentially take a ranged spell attack, take a melee spell attack the other cantrips use for flavor
Home brew is made up by the dm basically
If you’re playing 2024 Rangers got a lot of buffs that were previously optional rules for 2014. I would clear it up it your DM to make sure. In 2014 there were a few particularly strong Ranger builds. 2024 sort of lowered the power ceiling for the most broken of them while significantly raising the power floor of the class
yes
Buff, Debuff, Healing, Crowd Controll, and Utility are all support
Support is support, smart words magic man
Homebrew is an umbrella term that refers to custom content, which includes but isn’t limited to:
- Rule changes
- Rule additions
- Custom spells, classes, and other player options
- Custom monsters, NPCs, etc
- Custom settings
My little plant growth is supporting yall. Ill grow my lawn while yall take the bad guy out
Okay crazy Dave
Wait I have an idea for a character now
I mean, plant growth + any reasonable slow might as well be an imobilization XD
Thx guys , i never thought dnd community would be this great, thx alot
It’s more so no homebrew for newbies in general. It’s sort of like trying to modify a car before you’ve learned how to drive.
I mean do I gotta be a mechanic to drive a car? Not exactly I don’t think
I get what you mean tho
- a new player might think something is cool. Only to find out there is already a spell for it prolly higher level
@midnight basin thx for answering all my questions
First of all, not a dude
second of all, I'm dyspraxic and sometimes will type out the wrong words depedning on what I'm thinking about XD
so give me a second to double check and edit :p
Mb it was meant it be a joke mb
s'all good
Are casters harder to play than martials?
Nah, martials are harder.
Casters have spells. They're little packets of rules to take in, sure, but they're pretty standardised. You might have to pick what you pack each day, not too strenuous.
Martials have to read the battlemap. Where to stand, how to take cover, who to block. Melee especially has to be in the right place at the right time to do their job right. It's less effective to use your massive sneak attack as a rogue on a simple goblin when there's an ogre bearing down on you.
Is a wizard ok for a new player?
Feel free!
Hello! I never did D&D before but always dreamed to, thought it would be time to stop dreaming and maybe actually try it out but I don't really know how to go about it : )

Here's a quick build guide: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/classes#QuickBuild12
Try having a read through the first couple of sections of the Free Rules to get a grasp of the terminology, then have a go at putting a character together for practice.
You'll need to pick a class, species and background. Let us know if you have any questions!
Alright, I'll do that! Thanks a lot!
Dang, thanks!
Anyone have some tips for writing a character's backstory? Anything I've been able to come up with so far has felt kinda generic or uninspired
A disclaimer: that there is for the 2014 rules. The principles are the same but some details may have changed.
Three Sentence Backstory:
- your origin, beginnings or upbringing
- a turning point, such as your class, training or a significant event
- why you now adventure
Nyra grew up in an isolated elven commune. Abducted by a mysterious cult for dark experiments, she overcame their hold on her and escaped. Now she uses the powers they gave her to hunt monsters as she searches for a home she can barely remember.
Any ideas so far?
I can see why that works lol. Nice tip
He's a bearfolk who I think I'll make a barkeep/cook of some kind. I have his general personality down, that's all so far though
What about them makes them an adventurer?
I would also adjust your expectations a bit. Your first character (or even batch of characters) will likely feel unoriginal. That's okay; we all start somewhere. As you play more and get exposed to different influences, I'm sure your range will grow and you'll surprise yourself with what you come up with!
Thanks! I actually have written a couple characters before that I was sort of okay with, but the campaigns I started with them didn't really go anywhere after a few sessions
Thats one of the main parts I'm kind of stuck on I'd say. I was thinking maybe I'd have him set out to save his village from some kind of threat, since I want him to be very attached to/protective of his community
There's the default tragedy, there's simple wanderlust, maybe they were visited by a fortune-teller that told them something of an omen. Perhaps they're supporting a friend also in the party.
I’m thinking about getting a starter kit for D&D. Is the “Dungeons & Dragons Essentials Kit Boxed Set” a good one to start with?
It's a good one, but it does use the 2014 rules, which may or may not matter to you and your group. Not quite as newcomer-friendly as the newer starter sets (Dragons of Stormwreck Isle OR Heroes of the Borderlands) but a solid way to jump into the hobby.
I was leaning towards Stormwreck Isle, but I couldn’t find any in stock near me, so I just substituted it.
how do you get into dnd?

Here are some options. Pick one (or multiple, if you like)!
- You could watch some games played on YouTube or Twitch just to see what it's like in action. (Podcasts also work for this purpose.) Don't expect your home game to look like a professional production, though!
- Or play the demo.
- Or read #learn-to-play.
- Or you could read through the Free Rules.
- Or you could watch the Handbooker Helper videos (or WASD20's Rules School) on YouTube. Caveat: the videos are for the 2014 rules. The fundamentals are pretty much the same between 2014 and 2024 rulesets, though.
- Or you could sign up for a learn-to-play session through the virtual weekends linked in the server's Events channel.
- Or you can do any/all of these in increments. Read one rules chapter. Watch one explainer video.
hoii
im finishing a bard he used to be a burglar and lost his friends escaping prison with them, so he went to sacred places, started studying and acquierd the religion skill to heal anyone he can
right now im stuck at dndbeyond's character details, exactly the faith part
¿what should i write down in the faith box?
Do you have a DM yet?
me?
if ur asking about me then no, im just making a few characters for whenever i start a campaign
I don’t think a Bard has to have faith in anything?
No need to reply directly to someone participating in the conversation!
If you don't have a DM yet, you don't know what setting you'll be in and what gods/faiths will be present. If you do want to put something down there, you could make it general: "god of the sun" (or whatever) and make it more specific once you know the options in the setting you're in.
ik, but i gave him the religion ability so i can cast healing word in any party member
You could also put none. Even in a world where the gods are a known quantity, your character doesn't have to follow any one god.
ooh, i see, so i should just leave it blank until i get a dm?
But you could also just list "god of healing" and replace it with the specific name in your DM's setting. Or leave it blank.
thank you

ideally i should have a character ready before right?
I would recommend knowing how to make a character and having some loose ideas rather than a full character sheet.
thanks
Hello, I have a quick question
if I'd like to host a DnD session in person with friends, what should I buy first?
You don't have to buy anything!
You can use the free rules, dice rollers can be digital, and you can also find well-received adventures released legitimately online for free as well.
Right, that's an option but I also want to help the immersion, it's their first time playing as well and I don't want to bore them or anything
If you do want to buy something, check out the starter sets.
Ditto the starter set suggestion.
Grab an Essentials or Starter box, yeah. That'll give you the gear to throw a game on the table (*some assembly required).
I'll check those out, thanks
to be more specific, the Essentials Kit (Dragon of Icespire Peak) and Starter Set (Lost Mine of Phandelver)
and more dice. and chips
Disagree: I would recommend Dragons of Stormwreck Isle or Heroes of the Borderlands.
I’d also recommend Stormwreck and Borderlands on the grounds that they’re easier to get.
i meant more that LMoP and DoIP are related to each other and fit very well.
Sure, but in terms of onboarding, I think the newer sets beat out the older ones by a country mile.
Heroes of the Borderland is more recently released and likely easier to access and buy
do Heroes of the Borderland and Welcome to the Hellfire Club integrate well with each other as far as rules and accessories? i know the hellfire one is very Stranger Things themed.
should i give the sheriff and the guard from my bard's backstory a name as an organization? maybe to allow a dm take us to that place later on
Let the DM do it to better slot it into their world.
i mean, it's not only those two, it's just that those two form part of an organization that made justice under the king's command
Best if the DM does their worldbuilding instead of the player themselves
I think you can name it for yourself and then, when you have a DM, see if they're open to you contributing to the world. Many are, but not all are.
I'd still have a name but keep it as a plan B where I won't say it if no one asks
One of my PCs is of noble descent, House Stoneheart of some Dwarven kingdom, in my actual sheet it was never brought up unless the DM asks their last name
One quick question, is a bard like any good offensively? I mean vicious mockery yeah but other than that can it pack a punch?
To everyone else this is just a Dwarf that was previously the kid of a noble, that's all
Not really. Bard is mainly a support class.
Bard is pretty good offensively if it wishes to be
I would say you can make some offense choices, but I wouldn't say the bard excels at it compared with other classes.
Its flexible in that regard, traditional Bards have all kinds of control and utility spells but there's subclasses like Valor and Swords that are clearly aggressive
when choosing skill proficiency for my bard (who got the skillful trait as it's a human) ¿should i choose an ability i have previously chosen to make it better or i can choose another one so it gains 4 abilities instead of 3?
I've got like two ideas for a bard, a changeling with a flute, or just a guy so bad at playing an instrument that you can't help but cover your ears
There's a few skills that Bard should have
Arcana, Religion, Perception, Intimidation, Persuasion
Deception, Investigation, Nature and Stealth are decent too
Depends on your team ofc, you can skip Arcana, Religion, Investigation and Nature if your team has a Wizard or some sort
Perception's good on everyone, Intimidation/Persuasion/Deception is playing to a Bard's high cha
Really? I had no idea intimidation was needed for a bard
What’s intimidating about a bard?
ever seen an actor play a menacing role?
Anyone can be intimidating with the right words or tools. Someone who can do magic is a right proper threat.
I think I've just reached a new layer of understanding bards
Can a sentient plant be scary?
ever seen little shop of horrors?
It doens't have to literally make sense, just that, if you're playing a high cha character (commonly known as a face)
Not a big horror fan actually but I get that
We're drifting from the point of the channel, folks.
The three most common face skill checks are on deception, persuasion, intimidation
We’re technically on topic
Loosely
Kinda like how it makes no sense for a Paladin to be good at deception and intimidation, but its a nice skill to have on them anyways
A big holy man is horrifying
You haven't seen my scrapped concept of a Deep Gnome Paladin then
Question though, how far can you stretch what a patron is for a paladin?
A character can play to their mechanical strengths, but they can also subvert those expectations. It's a game of imagination, so there aren't very many musts.
Paladins don't run on patrons, they run on oaths
Which is just a promise so powerful it gives them power
It doesn't have to be for a person, an oath is a concept
How does concentration work exactly, do I have to like stare VERY VERY intensely at my spell?
No you just focus on the spell like trying to balance yourself on one foot
So I've got this character idea about a delusional guy worshipping a rock, to the point it thinks it's giving him powers, what is he
Could be Cleric legit
Doesn’t help the character I wanted to run has brainrot
paladins are powered by their oath, their own convictions to fulfil a promise or duty. it just impressed reality enough that they get powers
Flavoring is free so its however you want to flavor concentration as
So a paladins oath is just a big promise?
Yes
Hmmm
No people/god necessary
Does it have to be a serious oath?
For the most part yes
all this time I thought of paladins so shallow
It's a common misconception.
Its this seriousness that allow oathbreaking
lowkey thought paladins were just melee warlocks with the whole time
No, the oath itself can it be stupid
Hmmmm perfect
It can't be "I vow to never eat cereal in the morning"
As long as he’s committed to the oath the oath itself can be as dumb as I can think
That depends on the table. Like virtually anything is possible, but whether it's acceptable is another story.
wait so, what are the differences between warlocks and paladins?
Paladins hold a promise so powerful the promise itself gives them power
I’d clear the specifics of your oath with your DM. A more lighthearted game may accept a silly oath, a more grounded one would probably want a stronger narrative reason
Warlocks sign a contract with their sugar daddy/mommy to get magical powers
Warlocks get their power from big strong guys, paladins just like made a vow that they cannot break if they don’t wanna lose their morals and power
Warlocks make a transactional pact with a more powerful entity for power
I've been getting Paladins and Warlocks mixed this whole time
Typically not on a deific level, but still powerful entities like powerful celestials, fiends, eldritch beings, etc
Ah, so like, there cannot be an ant warlock who made a deal with a human?
Typically no, it depends on the subclass
Flavoring is free but part of making a character comes down to the subclass you want to play too
No, the entity in question has to be powerful enough to actually grant power. An old archwizard might suffice depending on subclass, such as the Undying
Fiend Warlocks can't have a patron that's a zombie gnome for example
It is important to note that the tenets of each oath are intended to be reasonable and somewhat flexible. A Paladin likely won’t face consequences if they’re forced to break their oath, or controlled against their will to do so.
Are there any races that control hiveminds or are a hivemind themselves?
Mind Flayers
Not playable ones.
You need customizable origins to play as them
How do spells like awaken work? Does the thing need to have consciousness or no?
Because from what I see it doesn’t exactly say what the requirements are
The spell text just says "beast or plant."
So ANY plant
With an INT of 3 or less.
It doesn’t mention anything about a consciousness so it doesn’t need one. Spells only do what they say they do, nothing more and nothing less
Hmmm i think crazy Dave can work now..
In order to join a campaign, what should I have prepared?
Know the basics of the rules, know how to make a character, have a few loose character ideas.
A good schedule
Also this (I guess)
my schedule is pretty clear thanks to the holidays
Then you’re good to go
I have a pretty good idea on the rules but I am doubting myself a little, is there like a website of the rules I can look to for clarification?
I did just mistake warlocks and paladins
Yep, here they are: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
There should be resources online somewhere
Like DnDbeyond
Sooo I bought a starter set a few days ago and Im really confused because the guide book mentions monster cards but I cant find any in either deck
How do I know its stats
What set did you get?
Heroes of the borderlands
There are monster tokens and no cards for them
The monster cards are the big postcard-sized ones. See this video: https://youtu.be/mBych6S-BTw?t=999
Those are missing?
Ohhh they're underneath the little combat record things? I havent taken those out yet my bad
Yup found em thanks!
Yeah, empty the box to ensure everything is there.
okay I'm halfway through the first chapter of the rules, and just wanna ask real quick, are there like newbie parties here for people to learn? I really dont wanna make a fool of myself if I mess something up
You'd have to check for yourself by reading the ads in #looking-for-players. Some people are open to newbies but don't specify, so you can (and should!) ask.
Question about feats, are there any rules on how you can choose them or is it just "go wild"?
Each background comes with an Origin feat, listed in the background description
Otherwise feats can only be picked at certain class levels, as listed in each class page. Typically it is at levels 4, 8, 12, 16, & 19 where you can get the Ability Score Improvement feat by default or choose a different feat for which you qualify for.
Level 19 is also a special case, since you can instead get a special kind of feat called a Boon
Other features may grant you a feat, such as Human, which gives you a second origin feat of your choice.
Some feats also have special prerequisites that you need to fulfill before you can take them. For example, the Elven Accuracy feat is only available to Elves and Half-Elves
Ohh, and Proficiencies? Each class gives you like three?*
Btw you wouldn't make a fool of yourself if you messed up. Everyone messes up at first, quite a lot usually. It's a complex game...
I suppose practice does make perfect
so I now understand everything about "playing the game" I shouldn't make a character too detailed before getting a party, right?
Proficiencies will be mainly given by your class, background, and species. Some feats and magic items may give you more.
Up to you but yes, best to have a framework ready but not the whole character
as a newbie is it a horrible idea to play a complex class like a bard with an also complex species, Changeling?
I think it’s fine to make a practice character. It’s a good way to reinforce the rules you’ve been reading, especially if you get it reviewed
No it’s not a horrible idea. Bard is relatively more complex but no class is too complex to learn
It’s usually better for learning the game to play a class/species you’re interested in over one that you’re not, even if it is on the complex side
now all that's left is to wait for a game 🪑
Sword Bard is epic
I’ve just recently got into d&d, I’ve been playing with my friends. We don’t know all of the rules but we’ve been having fun.
I’m the dungeon master most of the time so I’m in charge of keeping track of most things. It’s difficult but also rewarding.
I was wondering, my friend has magic. I don’t know much about spells, how they actually work, like if there’s a cooldown or something. I asked him but he didn’t see anything on his character sheet. we’re new to the game so the character sheets are premade.
I’m just looking for any advice regarding how spells works. Thanks.
What can you tell us about the premade sheet? Class, species, perhaps a name?
so we bought the Dungeons & Dragons Stranger Things from amazon. My friend is using a character called Will the wise, I think if you google it you’d probably be able to see its stats and spells. But I’m not sure how the cooldowns for spells work. Any advice on that would help a lot.
You can cast 1 spell per turn.
You can cast cantrips (level 0 spells) without using a spell slot.
All other spells, when used, consume a spell slot. So if you have a level 3 spell, it requires using a level 3 spell slot (or higher spell slot). Spell slots recharge on long rest (short rest if warlock).
You can upcast spells (except cantrips) by using a higher level spell slot. Sometimes this brings additional benefits like more damage or more targets.
I see, thanks so much for the help!
For more information on spellcasting, see https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/spells
omg tysm this is exactly what i needed!
i only know fireball spam and chernobyl combo lol
Are bladesinger wizards better or worse than martials?
