There are four ways to access content on D&D Beyond that you may have in your physical books:
- Purchase the full digital book from the marketplace
- Purchase a digital/physical bundle from the marketplace
- Join a D&D Beyond campaign with someone who already owns the book where content sharing has been enabled
- Use the homebrew tools to copy the content from your physical book into D&D Beyond (Note: Do not publish any content copied in this way; it is for personal use only)
In the meantime, I would make a character with the free options, just to go through the process and learn how it works!
whats the best bg for an elvish sorcerer
gackground
Acolyte ain’t bad
2014 or 2024 rules?
If the former, whatever seems fun. If the latter, whatever gives you stat bonuses you want, probably Cha and Dex
Helloo, I'm quite new here 👋
I'm interested in joining a game, but i would like to know usually how long a session is?
Typical D&D sessions can run from 2-4 hours.
But sometimes some are shot and last an hour.
And sometimes some folks run an epic session that can last more than 8 hours
Really depends on the group
I see 🤔 thank you, I'll try to look up a game session that fit my time schedule 👍
My sessions usually are 3-5, so yeah it depends on the group
That sound fun! Do i need to make a charactersheet? Or can i use the one i made in roll20?
thats a lot of time
That's up to your eventual DM/group. Personally, I wouldn't accept a character someone had made on any platform without reviewing it myself.
The one you made in roll20 is a character sheet
If your group is playing on roll20, yes
Good time to get immser in the game 🕺
I see! If i try to convert it into pdf can i just pluck the number? I'm not very good at math haha (・∀・;)ゞ
Okay! Then I'll have to check on the group 👍
Possibly. A lot of folks make errors making their first few characters, so I wouldn't count on using it exactly as is until you've gotten your DM to look it over. But if you want to save it for yourself, by all means!
Oh thank god, then I'll try to find a beginner friendly session 🙌 thank you for your help!
One shot?? Like one session ? 😯
Yes please 🙇
One shots are ‘campaigns’ that only last one session
Campaign meaning a series of sessions with an overarching plot. Or in this case, just one session
Think of it as, one mission, one quest
not - We've got one shot at this! Better not fail!
They’re lower commitment, allow you to experiment with different playstyles and are also usually more casual
I wasn’t sure what term to use, so I just put ‘campaign’
I usually just use adventure personally
is there any available noob friendly games?
Check #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community for games
Many groups are fine with new to D&D players but the more effort you put in to learn the core game rules and mechanics and understand how to use your character sheet, the easier you'll likely be able to find a group to take you.
Also a reminder that soliciting/organizing games outside of the Looking For Game channels is off-topic.

Hi all! Quick question regarding economy, crafting and a newer DM.
I’m a pretty avid TTRPG player, and normally a DM, and my friend is planning to host a 5E game. 5E is one of the systems I’m least familiar with, so I’m looking mainly for resources to help my DM out specifically regarding selling items, crafting items, creating spell scrolls, etc.
Since the rest of my group is new, I figured I’d try a less combat oriented playstyle and have planned for a Lizardfolk Artificer archivist. We are playing low level for context. Outside of being a caster, my plan was to produce lots of weapons and spears (lizardfolk), lots of acid vials (artificer alchemist jug), sell said items to the best of my ability, and then craft lots of level 1 scrolls which should take roughly 6 hours a piece.
All this effort to act as mainly a support caster with backup scrolls! It seems like a neat way to play, but I’d like to also make sure my DM has resources to reference regarding these rules, and also just any suggestions to make this a fun playstyle for everyone involved!
So I’d be careful of a few things:
- The Archivist subclass is from an old (abandoned) UA, so it may have some balancing or gameplay quirks especially if ported to the 2024 Artificer
- Outside of other crafting rules, material sourcing and selling items is up to the DM. Be careful about spending excess time bunkering down to craft mundane items like weapons when your party should or is supposed to be out adventuring.
- For spell scrolls, it’s important to note that in order for a character to use them, the inscribed spell needs to be on that character’s spell list. So, for example, a (non-Eldritch Knight) Fighter can’t use a spell scroll at all. Likewise, a Cleric wouldn’t be able to use a Scroll of Grease
Ahhhh, might just avoid the archivist class then. Didn’t realize it was out of date
The plan was to only craft during short rests and full party downtime, so no worries in that regard
And good to know about spell scrolls- I assumed I would be the only person able to use them, mainly so I could surpass my normally extremely limited spell slot access
Also gentle reminder that this channel is more for new to D&D folks to get help getting started with D&D. #character-discussion is a better fit for character build discussions
Hi everyone! I'm completely new to dnd and ttrpg
Welcome! Check out #learn-to-play and the pinned messages here in the channel for useful resources to help get you started!
Feel free to ask specific questions as you run into them.
Goooood morning afternoon evening
Ahh I figured It was right since I wa slooking for resources for my newer dm, sorry!
Hello Everyone! I'm sorta new to ttrpg, the only little experience I have is Exalted Essence 3 and completely new to dnd
Hello sorta new to ttrpg, I’m Nugget! Also if you wanna learn the game you should read up on the first few chapters of the free basic rules on #learn-to-play . Oh, and feel free to ask any questions you might have!
Okay tyyy!
I'm sorry i just got back from preparing my work 😭🙏
I saw the oneshot suggestions, thank you for explaining it to me! I think I'll go with that first 🙌✨
Hi my self and a friend are looking for a community/party etc to play with does anyone hav a suggestion on were i can find this, it is digitally we are looking to play.
If you want to use this server to find a game check out the instructions in #find-a-game !
Then you should get started on learning the rules! Read up on the first few chapters of the free basic rules on #learn-to-play , and feel free to ask any questions you might have.
Welcome! I’d have a look at #learn-to-play as well as this channel’s pins, both of which have a bunch of useful newbie links including to the free Basic Rules. I suggest making a practice character as you flip through, since it often aids the learning process. The more you learn the easier it is to get into a table as well!
Don't feel pressured to memorize everything, take it at your own pace and focus on what you want to do (e.g. no need to read every spell description, or every classes' mechanics if you don't plan on playing one)
Also feel free to ask any specific questions you have here, we’re always happy to help! :)
If you're familiar with the rules already and/or just want to jump straight into group finding check out #find-a-game to learn how to use this server to find a group
Okay, what's the difference between the 2014 rules and the 2024 rules for 5e? Does it even matter for newbies like me or that does matter?
There are a fair few differences, most notably imo that backgrounds determine your ability score increases from character creation rather than species. Classes were also updated in 2024, as well as some other more minor changes. I’d say it does matter, because the difference is large enough that sometimes you have to specify, but both versions are good.
As both DM and player that is
And generally-speaking is it a no-no for DM to be like, fresh off the boat? Like, know nothing about the game?
Like does it matter if I have worldbuilding, setting, lore, NPCs and stuff if I don't even know how to play?
Oh that’s completely fine! I started as a DM, actually.
Like if I forgot something can I just ask a player?
Oh wait I misread
Yes, you are expected to know the rules, at an adequately advanced level
But so are players
This is fine though
Been staring at this screen for 15 minutes, trying to work up courage enough to overcome my crippling fear of social situations.
Info dump:
Somewhat new, had one campaign before, but had to disband for time-related reasons.
Been, (and still am) terrified of getting back in, despite desperately wanting to.
Accidentally clicked the wrong thing on this channel, as I want to learn how to DM as well as be a player.
Scared to death even while writing this.
It’s alright! We’re happy to have new players, and I appreciate you being comfortable enough to chat.
The first time I went to d&d at my local game store I nearly chickened out 3 times and was so nervous I was nauseous
Good for you for typing it anyway
If it’s alright, could I ask if you’d be interested in text-based campaigns, or play-by-post? They’re often less confrontational than face-to-face or online call sessions.
OH gods doing this in person.... The thought alone has just made my toes curl
What... is the difference between those 2?
Play by post is asynchronous, meaning that you don’t ever schedule an actual session. You just chip in to advance the story if you’re online.
The one I did, I remember being online. VC was used at times, though I rarely was brave enough to use it.
Text based campaigns have sessions and require scheduling, but usually offer a more immersive experience that progresses the story in bursts (play by post can take DAYS to do things)
Hi, I just started running my first DnD campaign and it's mostly homebrew. I've always liked writing and so I want to eventually turn my campaign into a full campaign book, but since I'm so new I'd really appreciate some advice 🙂
Yeah, Text based having sessions, that sounds like it'd be fine for me. If voice chat is possible, I might use it when I get comfortable with everyone.
There's a #homebrew channel if you want advice on making homebrew or if you want feedback on anything you make
Well I'm not sure what the common resources that people use, and right now I'm just researching random creatures and factions I think would fit in the world I've made.
I have no idea why I'm like this; I stream gaming on twitch for god's sake, yet this has me petrified.
It’s completely understandable
Text based dnd is, as mentioned before, less confrontational and I feel might be a better fit for you
Of course, once you get comfortable, you can try different methods with that group
That sounds good
Social interaction can be scary. Especially if it's new things
Oh! And if you’ve got any questions, feel free to ask: the folks here (including me) are happy to help!
You can find the free basic rules on D&D Beyonds website, which includes a lot of the rules necessary rules for running a campaign. From character creation to even some monster stat blocks if I'm not mistaken. I'd say if you interested you can start by taking a read around there
I'll go and check it out now, thanks 🙏🏼
Outside of that there are 3 core rulebook, the Players Handbook (PHB), The Dungeon Masters Guide (DMG), and the Monster Manual (MM)
My first (and only) campaign, I was a rogue. My go-to in rpgs. Had massive fun, despite probably messing up a bunch
Messing up is part of the game, worry not!
I've messed up many times, sometimes even on purpose!
Messing up is part of the fun
The thing I remember doing.... our party.... killing a dragon named Venomfang, the clearly insane druid (?) npc who was the lynchpin in beating him forcefed me some black concoction that ended up killing me, caused me to meet a celestial being that returned me to life because they had plans for me, and accomplishing one of my character's goals EXTREMELY early.
My wood elf was an aspiring chef, and was working on a monster cookbook, and had dreams of cooking Dragon meat.
And well....
Steak or mince?
Experimentation. First came tail steaks. I had intended to use the rest for other things, documenting all monster culinary observations in real life in a book.
In character and all
What’d you do with the venom glands?
I think the druid took those
That’s reasonable
(Deep hillbilly accent) "Payment fer sayvin' yer asses, 'n doin' yer job fer ya!"
Since i dont think anyone in the party wanted them.... fine, sure
I remember deciding the next character I make would be magic based. And I decided on Sorcerer.
Hi! I just joined and only familiar with dnd irl, how exactly does this server work??
Its mainly a hub for people interested in dnd to talk about it
As the official D&D Discord run by Wizards of the Coast (the folks who own and sell D&D), we provide this server for the community to discuss D&D
We don't host games but we do have our Looking For Game channels if you're looking for a D&D group to join/play with.
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
We have lots of channels for specific D&D topics - see #channel-guide to see them all
That would be awesome if someone could possibly send me a channel (or direct me how to find one?)
For what?
Ohh okay thank you!
Just in general, trying to figure out stuff. Not familiar with dnd online at all
My irl campaign only meets once a month so I’m bored lol
There's a Find a Game section of channels if you scroll down a bit
(freezes up)
No worries! This is a pretty large server, lots of channels for specific D&D topics, lots of D&D discussions, and yeah, check #looking-for-players for games needing players, #looking-for-community for other D&D servers looking for DMs and players, #paid-looking-for-game if you're okay with joining a paid D&D game, and #looking-for-dm to use the bot commands (see #find-a-game) to advertise your availability as a player
Hello
Welcome!
Thank you for your help!!
I have a couple questions
I have answers then
So how long do you think it took you to understand the basics of DnD? I’m a writer, I’m used to text-based roleplay. I’m still trying to learn how statistics work. I turn around and look at the character sheet I’m supposed to fill out…
I’m sorry, what is this? I’m not kidding, this looks like engineer math. I just want to make a whimsical character and I’m looking at ancient script! Does ANYONE have tips or certain videos I can watch to help me with this?
Basics? Around a week

?tag new abilities
Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
Probably less?
Depends on what you’d classify as “basics”
Here's three official ways to generate your character's ability scores
What are they requirements for multiclassing am i able to mix any 2 classes like artificer and barbarian?(i dont know all the classes) i also heard of a race or class that has like a rage mechanic which one is that? And am i able to just make anything a character like a talking stick? Or does it half to be a living creature
I have an idea for a character and i have no idea if it will work
You need the required ability scores to multiclass. In that case you’d need at least 13 in intelligence (artificer) and strength (barbarian)
Ok
Barbarian is the one with rage btw
Probably easier to learn if your playing regularly. But if you read a good portion of the basic rules you'll have a good idea
And as for species, there are a list of official species in the game, and anything homebrew (not official) has to be run through the DM
Most spellcasters can buff
Ok which do i need for that multi?
Depends on the caster
A talking stick is not an official playable species, the list of official options is here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/species
Everything on this page from the PHB to the PHB (2014) sections is official
Im tryna go for a barbarian that can enhance himself with magic
Charisma for bards or wisdom for clerics probably are your best bet-
Ah
You’re gonna have an issue there
Enchantment is a school of magic, many if not all spellcasting classes get access to at least one enchantment spell
Ok.
Barbarians can't inherently use magic while they are Raging, as per the Rage rules
Barbarians can’t concentrate on spells or cast when raging
Dang
Rage is arguably magical, but not really
Its calling upon a primal energy usually through a state of extreme emotion
That isn't the only way Barbarians can use magic however. Many subclasses have magical flavor that aren't spellcasting itself, such as Path of the Giant, Path of the Worldtree, and Path of Wild Magic
Ok.. how about a barbarian fighter multi?
It's possible but I don't recommend it
Works, but tbh I don’t recommend multiclassing for newcomers
Fair enough
Hey, im going to be a DM for the first time soon, what are some things i should know? (Also my first time playing D&D)
Multiclassing isn't recommended for newbies, it's more complex than it seems.
I just had an idea to basically make a barabrian that can go super saiyan lol
Communicate with your players
Respect your players
Put passion into the game
Don’t overprep
Expand your vocabulary
Show, not tell (and use descriptive language that talks into all senses)
Have fun, no stress, and COMMUNICATE
Have a session zero
You don’t write a story, your party lives through one. Don’t prepare tales, prepare scenarios.
Try to know more than your players
COMMUNICATE
Ok thank you for the heads up
Usually you want to multiclass when you have a specific ability(s) synergy in mind
what would qualify as overprep? and what is a session 0?
Also is there like a website where i can design and build a character?
That is a very good way to flavor (narratively describe) how your Rage looks like
D&DBeyond, D&D's official toolset
Yeah either that or like purple/red energy
Ok
It’s over prepping once it’s not fun anymore, or once you’ve overreached the realistic amount you can predict your players may encounter
If you go around #learn-to-play or this channel's pins there's also the Basic Rules linked, which are hosted on D&DBeyond (DDB)
And a session zero is when everyone gathers and talks about the campaign, possible boundaries and sometimes make characters together
Also do i need to buy anything (besides dice) to play?
Nope, no investment is needed to start out
Ah okay. I have some friends coming in from out of town, i could do a session 0 online just fine, right?
Ok ty
Yup!
Free rules, players, DM, a way to roll dice (digital/physical), a way to track characters (character sheets, digital/physical), and a way to communicate, an adventure/campaign/story that everyone wants to explore/run, is really all you need to start playing D&D.
Great! i appreciate your help! 😊
Glad I could be of assistance
Am i allowed to use d20 (website) to build my character and send it in as a sheet or smth
Nvm
Couldnt figure out how to use it
roll20?
Yeah or DnDBeyond, or even fill in a PDF (would have to share by hosting it on a reputable hosting service like Google Drive)
Ok ty
roll20 is an independent Virtual Tabletop (VTT) designed to function with D&D and other TTRPGs. I'm not sure if it has a native exporter for 5e sheets, though it should have the Basic Rules integrated like DDB's character creator does
I use a fan-made google sheets character sheet personally, all of them are viable
Ok just makin sure
Im sorry for asking alot of questions but am i allowed to add an ability where i gain like 1 d4 on attacks at like 10% health
Custom species
Not without DM and group approval
Ok
Best to play with the core rules first before adding homebrew like that
Then you'll get a feel for the balance and mechanics of the game
Ok ty
hi!
i don't really know how to say this since im new to this community and server, but are there any must-get resources to get into d&d?
ive been trying to get into TTRPGS for a while, but there aren't any groups where im from
Nugget's list is solid. Here's mine: #dm-discussion message
You can also search the server for dm advice and dm tips. There are a bunch of resources out there (YouTube, blogs, subreddits) for the new DM. While I would recommend looking at them, don't let that stop you from actually running the game. Experience helps a ton in a way that theory can't match.
thank you man
The free rules (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024) are all you need really. If you try it and like it, then you might consider investing more money into the hobby!
Hi
Welcome to the server!
many sources recommended the 2014 rules, what's different between 2024 and 2014? are they simplified, complexified or just rearranged?
That's surprising: a lot of folks here recommend the 2024 rules as they do a better job of breaking the game down for new folks (so I'm told). They are both fifth edition D&D, but there are some minor but significant differences that set them apart.
2024 is an update to the 2014 5th edition rules to be more streamlined, easier to understand, and just more polished.
But yes, with any changes, folks will have opinions.
The 2024 updates are forward compatible - in that you can use 2014 materials in a 2024 game with only minor tweaks needed (typically around when a class get's it's subclass).
that's good to know, thanks!
a friend of mine spared me a PHB 2014 ver copy some weeks ago since he doesn't use it anymore (he moved on from the hobby), i guess i'd start learning the original 5e system with the resources i have for now, then learn a bit from both and stick with the one i preffer the most to join a newbie campaign using said system, is that good?
i feel like i just said a huge amount of nonsense
Not everyone made the jump to 2024, so if you decide to stick with 2014, you should probably be able to find a table even now. Give the rules a read, look for online discussions about the differences if you want to see others think, and decide what makes sense for you!
thanks, like, really 🙏
Happy adventuring!
Heyo all, im joining a dnd campaign for the first time and I had a question regarding spells and leveling. So when you first play dnd, I’m assuming that you’re level 1. Does that mean that your spells also start at level 1, or are you limited to just cantrip spells for now?
Hello! Well, some campaigns start at higher levels, but let’s just assume for now you’re level 1. Spell progression is dictated in your class features table: for example, at level 1 a wizard would know 4 level 1 spells and 3 cantrips. They’d also have 2 level 1 spell slots, meaning they can cast two level one spells every long rest.
You unlock a higher level of spells every odd level
So 3,5,7,9, etc
refer to your class' feature table just to make sure. There will usually be a section that shows you how many of each spell slot you get at every level
Oki got it, thank you guys!
Is it normal to use like a regular ish voice? Im terrible at impressions and I don’t know how to do an accent.
Can someone tell me what UA means?
Yup, dw I’m exactly the same
UA stands for Unarchived Arcana, basically unofficial stuff that’s currently in play testing
I try to make it somewhat different, but god dang is it hard
Ty, that relieves like half of the stress
Once you get more comfortable, it’s a good skill to hone
Though, try to have a slightly different voice at least. Enough to know when you’re talking in character
Thank you!
Hey everyone!!
Gooooood morning afternoon evening, Fries! Welcome to the server. How may I be of your assistance today?
Well goooood morning, afternoon evening to you too!!! I was wondering what is the active event? Is that a new book (sorry I’m new new :/)
Yup!
Also, I thought your name was Fries, not new new
LOL. Thanks for the info 🙌
Hello! Trying to setup a Campaign for friends of mine and I was wondering where the Content Sharing is on the campaign menu?
On the campaign page, it should be right under the campaign title. Only a person with a master subscription can enable it though.
What no way 😔
Yeah it's one of the main perks of that subscription. 😔
i am completely lost i just joined the server rn to join random ppl without a full in depth knowledge on dnd
Welcome! Are you looking for how to learn the game or just looking to join a group?
Hello I'm new to dnd and very embarrassed to know nothing about it my partner has been trying to get me into it but I'm completely new and embarrassed to not know were to start I have no friends to start with and my partner works can anyone help at all if possible
You don’t need to be ashamed of being new!
Read up on the first few chapters of the free basic rules on #learn-to-play , and feel free to ask any questions you might have.
After that, either start a campaign with your partner and people irl or play online.
Information on finding groups online can be found in #find-a-game
Also
Hello, new to dnd, I’m Nugget!
Are there any German-speaking players on this server who I could get excited about text role-playing games? Please whisper to me... Thanks.
Roll20 has filters to search for games played by text and in your chosen language.
Ello! I’m a fully new player, with 0 experience and just wanted to give this game a try, could someone do me a favour and point me in the right direction to get started? If there is any YouTube video I could watch for a beginner would help; or if anyone’s willing to teach me 1 on 1 I’d appreciate that a lot too!
#learn-to-play should have a lot of good information, most important thing is you read trough the basic rules though
Could you show me where those are listed ^^?
do you want to play online or physically?
On dnd beyond the basic rules are listed for free, i believe thats where most people start
Online for now
Oky I’ll give them a read, anything else I should know? Is there a restriction on what kinda character I can have?
Theres classes and species you can pick from that form the base of your character, these have their own features/abilities. So the restriction is whatever those say
then dnd beyond is your best go to
How does the online version work? Like do I have to buy a game or something or what?
to my very limited knowledge you can create a character for free on dnd beyond with the basic races and classes
Where do I actually play
i dont really touch dnd beyond since i always play physically but i think you can look for a group in this discord
Finding Games Online
Dungeons & Dragons is all about getting together with your friends and telling an epic tale of adventure. But what if you can't get together in person? Over the past couple of years, playing D&D online has become easier than ever and can allow you to join your friends for a quest wherever they may be. Learn how to play online, then check out find-a-game to get started!
they have a link in there

Hi! I want to play D&D, but I don't have anyone to play with. I'd like to do a solo oneshot adventures, how can I? I need guidance.
online or in person?

theres also tips here
#learn-to-play message
In person, I actually have my character sheet rn. A human druid, an outcast, socially awkward and highly curious person. Enough of that. I tried making ChatGPT as my DM but it seems like the AI is kind of lost sometimes and is not consistent with the story telling, I want to know on how can I play with a consistent DM who's not a person since I don't have anyone to play with.
Maybe check out a local games store or library
Playing a roleplaying social game alone usually isn’t gonna be easy
i wouldnt use ai for dming, its better to have a group
Sadly, nothing
.
Bet, I'll try
goodluck!
That’s for online tho?
could still be an option
Though, online seems to be your only option
Yeah
It is, though I'm trying to invite my friends to play. I'll probably going to be their DM lmao.
That’s how I started dnd actually
Didn’t have a group, convinced my friend group to play under the condition I had to DM
No dice in hand, no maps, no books. Just character sheets and dropping sanity
I have the books in pdf though
But I don't like reading it in my phone honestly
How did it turned out?
Great!
Still the DM, but everyone’s learnt how to play a fair bit better and we’re having fun
That's good to hear! Wish y'all the best
Me and my friends are all new and we have set a date 19th dec to play i have to make a campaign and learn the game by then, HELP😭😭
Make a campaign all yourself? Probably not realistic as a new DM but you could run a pre written adventure to get you started.
?tag ddb claim
The following items on D&D Beyond can be claimed at no cost.
Stromwreck or prisoner 13 are both solid picks
Oh so i can use these? Thank u very much. That saves me alot of work and stress🙏🙏
Yes, all the items in that list are free to claim on DDB
Enjoy and happy rolling!
Helloo everyone names logan and I've literally never ever played nor do I know anything at all (other than reading all the information given on this server) I sadly live in a country where dnd is not a big thing at all and wanna play online but like I said complete noob who knows nothing any advice and anyone willing to help me maybe get me started with them 🥲
Have you checked out the rules for D&D yet?
Yep just still a bit lost
Alright, so if you know the rules, you should try finding a game. Read through #find-a-game and either post your own ad in #looking-for-dm or reply to ads that interest you in #looking-for-players, #looking-for-community, or #paid-looking-for-game.

Try having a read through the first couple of sections of the Free Rules to get a grasp of the terminology, then have a go at putting a character together for practice.
You'll need to pick a class, species and background. Let us know if you have any questions!
okii
Is the a way to download the basic rules as a pdf file so that I can read those even if I have no wifi/mobile data?
Check this out: https://www.dndbeyond.com/srd
The one with the highest number is the most recent.
Dang that alot
That's the whole of the free content including DM advice, magical items and creatures. You totally don't need to read it all.
Are guns allowed? Like firearms? I want my character to be sorcerer that uses magical guns to shoot out magical bullets
Oh, thank you so much!
that’s entirely up to the setting and your DM’s discretion! im a player in a campaign where the closest thing we have to a gun is projectile magic, and canons. the technology simply doesn’t fully exist as far as we are aware
but the campaign im DMing, multiple of my players have pistols. guns are an official available weapon in the rules, but in the end it’s up to the DM whether they exist and are available to you within the story
Typically not common. Actual firearms are listed but they're outside of the reach of a standard player character.
A way to work around it is to have a spellcaster with a wand or similar as a focus for their blasting spells.
Oh.. so it depends on the DM.. i should fill my sheet first
a good rule of thumb is if you aren’t sure about something like what items or abilities you can have within the story, just ask your DM! lord knows my players have asked me for so many things, with varying results lol
But start at the start. Go with what you can do by the book first.
Well umm im the only one on my friend group who's interested in playing this game.. they don't know how to play and I don't have a DM.. ill just read the guide
hi guys!!
G'day.
Hey!
Hey
Hi what official campaign would be most kid friendly?
Most of them are fine for children. Definitely not Curse of Strahd
Heroes of the Borderlands, the newest starter set, has an overall quite kid friendly vibe.
What's the command for new dm resources?
Quite a few encounters are also set up to be resolved non-violently.
Sigh. Running back and forth from "looking for community" to "Being paralyzed with social fear and doing anything else to put this off"
It depends on what age range you mean. This is a game about killing monsters, so if you're looking for something with little to no violance, you'll be pretty hard pressed to find it. But if you just want to avoid overly mature themes, then I'd say most adventures work great for that. The beginner adventures are generally a little more kid friendly than high level ones though
you can use ?newdm or ?tag new dm
those two pull up the same thing. Then there's another command for ?dmtips
thank you
You can find a ton of options for kid-friendly adventures here. Some are free and many are just $1-2. https://www.dmsguild.com/en/browse?keyword=kid-friendly
They asked for official content. DMs Guild is mostly fan made
Yes but they are so many more options for that there.
Sure. But in the future if you’re going to give someone a suggestion that doesn’t fit the requirements they asked for, then you should probably make that clear to them.
Fair. Also an age range could help. I am not aware of any official adventures targeted at ages say 12 and under. Perils in Pinebrook could easily be modified I think to fit a younger group.
Hello does anyone know a cheap starter pack so i can start playing d&d in real life. I just started and i know nothing. I need a really cheap starter pack with a rule book and all that. anyone know where i can get one or any good ones. Me and my friends have wanted to try playing. Please give me some good stuff. I would like it to be d&d official thanks😼
The new Heroes of the Borderlands starter set is reportedly pretty good for new players.
Okay thank you so much❤️
Hellooooo
If you’re looking for really cheap, my recommendation is the slightly older starter set that contains Dragons of Stormwreck Isle (has a blue dragon on the front). Slightly different rules to modern DND and less stuff that Borderlands but it’s like $30 cheaper
I ran a Candlekeep Mysteries campaign for my family and it went really well. It's more of a puzzle/whodunit campaign than a combat campaign
hmmmm i think i should buy Heroes of the Borderlands starter set because i can get it for christmas but i will think about yours too

I have a group of friends that want to give DND a try with some of them having played DND and other playing for the first time I'm looking for a DM that is willing to help us do a campaign together for the first time
If anyone knows where it would be better to send this that would be helpful

Hi. Quick question. How long session of game will last and where i can find a game for a noob in D&D ?
On average, between 2 and 4 hours for a session. How long a campaign goes can vary from one session to several over weeks, months, or even years!
#looking-for-players is where DMs post ads. Not all specify they're newbie-friendly, but it doesn't hurt to ask!
Thanks.
This is an excellent starter adventure. It includes dice and a nice summary of rules along with pre-made characters on simplified character sheets.
really?
The pre-made character sheets are here: https://media.dndbeyond.com/compendium-images/marketing/dnd_starterset_characters.pdf
hello everyone i'd like to ask for your opinions in regards to this thing I'm implementing in my game today, so I'm a newbie DM and i still don't have a D20 dice but my friends wants to play now in order to learn since we're all kinda just learning at the same time, so for context the dice I'm going to use today instead of a d 20 is 4 d6's and i want to ask if they rolled a natural 24 that they just automatically kill the enemy even though they're at full health
have you tried reading the rules? thats not how nat 20s work
also, 2d10 is much better
as much as I'd love to i only own those casino style dice lollll
I'd recommend using an online dice roller over making up new dice rules
There are plenty of free dice roll tools online. That would certainly be well outside the rules of the game and would not be ideal for balance reasons. Would a level 1 character automatically kill a dragon with a 1D4 sling? You can see how that could get out of hand.
that's true
that'll be very chaotic, so d6s for damage and an online dice roller for the d20
They make dice apps.
Probably not the same, but can help until you can get your hands on sets of dice.
that makes the most sense thank youuu
No problem!
Hello, could I ask someone a question about making a character but on priv?
Hello everyone!!
Welcome to the server!
so wait with the strength, dexterity, constitution, intelligence, wisdom and charisma cant i choose that myself and make my own backstory i dont want a premade
You can certainly create a character with a box set that includes premade characters. That's just to simplify things so that folks can get to playing instead of having to go through the process of character creation.
You can make your own backstory for the character, as most premades have those blank. But if you're new to D&D, making your own character can be tricky
but i like that process and how do i asure i make a balanced character
sure but it sounds most fun and fun is best
It's pretty likely you'll make a balanced character if you follow the rules.
And you're absolutely right about that, but it helps to understand the game first before you make your own character. In my experience atleast
okay do i get a rule book in a starter set?
I hate to interrupt but as someone who has never played DnD before, where do i even start?
You do.

Read the rules and #learn-to-play. Try to create a character for practice.
There is so much behind it all, its very confusing.
same lol ive never played😵💫 but ive watched like 20 vids on it now so im good
the only thing i don't get is when you roll a dice they say that theres like movement action and some like extra action(i forgot the name i do tho know it depends on characters and stuff) does the player like say i move upp do the dragon and try to hit the dragon and than try to jump away do you roll a dice for both the hit and the jump away move or does the dragon try to attack first and THAN you try to jump away and roll the dice to see if you can and / or check the stats if you're fast yk.
You might want to look over the combat portion of the rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game#Combat
On your turn, you can Move and take an Action. Some game features grant you a Bonus Action. You would roll only if the Action you're taking involves one. Hitting a creature with a weapon or certain spells would require a roll.
Somehow I’ve managed to be a DM for a few sessions but haven’t been a player yet
Thankssssss i want to be a dm mostly and than a player this really helped do you know where i can find and empty character creation sheet
you are the litteral best
Are there any active campaigns
Search #looking-for-players!
im reading the dnd dm guide and on the roped together portion would you just have one character do like a check for the party or have them all role a d20 and add there scores and give them like a high difficulty
well i will definetlly ask you if i need more questions byeeeee
Happy adventuring!
That section is under "group checks," so every character would roll rather than only one. It's not about adding the scores together.
To make a group ability check, everyone in the group makes the ability check. If at least half the group succeeds, the whole group succeeds.
i see thank you
is it just me but whenever i've tried to join a campaign recently im always hit with "character art is required", "you can't bring your own art", "payment is necessary", "our 'artist' will provide the art" and when i dont agree i get barred from joining without ANY mention of this in the lf players channel adverts?
Those all sound like quite absurd requirements to me. And "payment is necessary" shouldn't be present unless the game is marked as a paid game.
That's weird to have that be a requirement - but also be very alert to scammers, some who may be trying to find someone to buy their stolen-from-other-artists/AI art.
Please report suspicious direct messages/friend requests to Discord.
Yeah, those sound like art scams

How would I go about making a blind monk?
Take the first 2 levels as a fighter so you can take the blind fighting fighting style, second wind and action surge. Then maybe move in to monk.
Otherwise you'd be at disadvantage to hit without vision.
Or 4 levels in monk to eventually get a feat for that fighting style. But it could be rough battling till then
Thanks I think I’ll do the fighter one
Good day all, hope that things are well.
I've been watching videos and explanations on how to make a character sheet but I'm still a little confused on how stats and modifiers work
You put your numbers into your ability scores using an approved method. If you don't know specifics, use the Standard Array for starters.
Generally, if you're a spellcaster you make your casting ability the highest. If you don't have access to heavy armour, you'll want a decent Dexterity to make up your Armour Class. Never put Constitution below 10. Everything else is pretty much up to you.
Stats are determined with one of the three methods above, and every 2 the ability score goes above 10 you get a +1 to your modifier. (For example, 14 is a +2, 15 is a +2, 16 is a +3. A table of what modifier goes with what stat is in the bot post above)
Different things you want your character to do will be buffed by different stats
Now that i'm here, how i level up my char?, and how i can find a party?
"I am one with the Force and the Force is with me"
There are two main ways you level up: milestone and XP. This is chosen by your DM.
You get XP for killing stuff (basically) and Milestone is just your DM leveling you up when they feel it’s fitting
Ok

does anyone have any tips for session prep? I have some things down but I honestly don't know if it's enough 💔 😔
What do you mean by "enough"?
I have a few sentences down about the lore of the world but I have zero clue if I should add more or leave it,,,
Are you trying to prep for a session or a campaign?
both honestly...? We're having our first session next week and I wanna make sure I have everything down for that session and maybe most of the campaign, sorry if this sounds stupid im super new to dnd sighs
Let's move to #dm-discussion as that's the better channel. Also, no need to reply directly to someone participating in a conversation.
ok!!
Hello.
Going to start doing my first campaign with my new DM on Dec 22 however I'm feeling quite demotivated; anything to help motivate me (I could try to find a main)
Look at art, listen to character-appropriate music, read any lore and see what sparks your curiosity?
My partner and I have never played dnd but love playing two player board games. We’ve decided that we’d like to try 2 player dnd. Would anybody be interested in running a solo campaign with me so that I can learn the game and how to solo dm in the process?
Gonna try to find a main; especially since the only character I've played is Necromancer
You should post in #looking-for-dm by following the instructions in #find-a-game.
Hello fellow DND Players! I'm Josiah or you can call me Red if you can't remember my name. Anyways, I saw a lot of stuff about this game and I really want to play and become a part of it, but I'm going to need a lot of help understanding cause I'm Autistic. But I'm not gonna let that stop from playing and enjoying this new game! So can anyone help me plss?
Long time no see
So! How are you with reading?
Kinda ok but I might need a little bit more help with understanding cause I'm Autistic
Understandable
Read up on the first few chapters of the free basic rules on #learn-to-play , and feel free to ask any questions you might have.
Actually I’ll put them here, read this and then use that channel as reference for more questions
Free basic D&D rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
Ok so what would be the first thing to do after reading that 🤔
Probably making a practice character in dnd beyond and getting it reviewed
Oh, and you don’t need to know all the rules immediately
Ok. And can I have someone help me make the Character Sheet with me?
If you starts feeling overwhelmed, I recommend just learning how to make a character, basic ability checks, modifiers, core gameplay, classes and combat.
If you can find someone, sure! But read the rules first
Ok
And know that most of the folks here don’t have the time for one-on-one tutoring, so we might not be able to hold your hand through everything. But feel free to ask questions anyway.
RedTastic! ❤️🖤 But not today, night night!
hi, i’m new here! i’ve been looking to learn dnd for a long time, though i know it’s a very in depth game so i don’t expect people to just be holding my hand the entire time, im looking for resources to learn, how to create and manage, and find my group or to join a group, etc. thanks!!
Hey me too
And to fine a group online, #find-a-game has information on how to find games using this server
noice, friend? 🥺
thank you!
im totally new to d and d besides youtube. where should i start in the newcomer section to find an introductory group for my first time.
#learn-to-play is a great place to find resources to learn the basic rules, and if you feel confident to join a group, check out instructions on #find-a-game
idk #find-a-game still seems daunting. so many rules for each individual game sessions. is their a group just riffing and playing the game story based to get a hang of things.
Ohhh, well if it seems daunting you can check your dms for my message
Story based play is basically Roleplay, best way to learn is to read the free basics from dndbeyond to help understand the flow of the game but even that will let you just understand the rules. The best way to learn and become better is find a group that welcomes brand new players and learn as you go and find how you like to play.
@spare lion so im just looking for a way into dnd that can give me an understanding of it in a way i can understand because i only learn by doing. all of the lfg stuff i see is like people in wow looking for a raid group
You could try doing a one shot with a newcomer friendly group?
Though, to find one you’d probably have to use the lfg channels
is there a way of sorting that
I’m unsure
Btw, when you say you only learn by doing, does that mean that reading the rules or watching a video wouldn’t be too effective for you? A few people say that, and I just wanna be sure that’s what they mean.
Also, how much of the rules do you know?
im semi familiar with 5e but without putting it into practice i could read it a 100 times and cant tell you what magic hand does
yes all base mechanics im familiar with
So it’s mostly just memorising spells, mechanics and stuff like that?
With stuff like that, it’s likely you’ll just need to repeatedly do it till it hits your long term memory
hi guys, is this a good place to find a group to play?
You’ll have to check out #find-a-game for that, looking for games out of the designated channels is out of the rules
Or rather, against the rules
English is hard
correct. which is why im finding hard to find a group because all the these set different rules. like i just want to play rp or otherwise, dnd at its core. i want just get to know character aspect of it without necessarily meeting the rules.
idk maybe more just the story telling aspect than it is set rules
Yeah, might be more difficult to find a game like that. While there definitely are some groups that play more loose with the rules, the rules are a major part of D&D, as a roleplaying game, and as kinda mentioned earlier, otherwise you could just roleplay, and not limit yourself to dnd's setting, and I feel anyone wanting to just mainly roleplay is most likely doing that, instead of dnd
But the basic rules are pretty simple despite a whole book of rules. Most of it is gonna be content to pick from, and once you have your character, you have lot less you need to worry about, and just focus on what your character can do 😎
hi i'm new
Hi new, I’m Nugget
oh hi nugget im the demo guy
So your name is both new and the demo guy?
Hello everyone
My cats called nugget
Hi guys! I'm very new but looking to play y first game
Welcome! I’d recommend familiarising yourself with the rules first before you play. Read up on the first few chapters of the free basic rules on #learn-to-play , and feel free to ask any questions you might have.
Once you’re ready and got the fundamentals down, you can check out #find-a-game for information on how to find a group online. To make a post, type the appropriate command in any chat channel.
does reading the rules in starter kit or essentials kit counts
Well there are probably some more small rules you will have to abide by that you can probably only know by playing the game
but still is it ok to read it in those kits?
Sure
i got interested in DnD after i played it in the convention for first time
Oh fun!
Hi! I am going to DM but have a real life friend who has trouble connecting to my DM post/thread, can someone help him out? @paper kayak
You mean in #looking-for-players ?
do you guys have dnd campaign but with limited time only since i only have limited time because i still have a school. kinda like time scheduling
You could check out play by post, that doesn’t take scheduling
where?
Like they can’t find it or?
Some campaigns might say their method is “play by post” or pbp
?tag new pbp
I assume #looking-for-players message is your post?
Ah wait I see it’s working now
but do they have a standalone discord for it?
Well, at least that I know of
do i need to look it in the looking-for-players section?
Likely
But tbh you might be able to fit in sessions during the weekends
No need to limit yourself to one style
i was looking for one shots campaign only
Then make a looking for dm post that outlines your availability and ideal campaigns
is it the looking for community section sorry if i asked
It should be in #looking-for-dm

Work at lvl 4 ?
Like I could do evoke Staff or quarterstaff yk
Are you asking for 3.5e specifically? #dnd-elder-editions might be able to answer.
The rest of the server is very 5e focused, so the channel I linked is there for help with all previous editions.
Alright then
Hey I got my character done. So what do I do next?

I'm new to D&D, literally made my first ever character yesterday and am joining the party in game play for the first time tomorrow. I'm really really nervous because I don't understand the rules yet (my players handbook comes today). Does anyone have any advice? I've got a nice patient group!
You can skim the rules before your book arrives! https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
In particular, look at the relevant parts of your character (features for the class and species you chose) and understand where to find info on the sheet.
Okay; thank you! I'm gonna do some youtubing tonight.
Hi chat
So I have ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA WHAT IM DOING. I'm basically a newborn without a brain when it comes to reading character sheets. Not sure what to add when it comes to my rolls and checks or attacks

The best place to start is with the free Basic Rules, linked in the bot post above. As you're giving them a read, we'll be happy to answer any specific questions you have here in this chat.
Okay
Just keep in mind, the artificer class is not included in the free basic rules. If you want to view the rules for that class and build a character with them, then you'll need to purchase one of the sourcebooks where that class published in. The most recent and up to date one is called "Forge of the Artificer"
The basic rules include the bare minimum needed to play the game, so it has 12 of the 13 classes, and only 1 subclass for each. It does include all the rules for how to play and it explains the process of making a character, so its still a good place to start. The main thing its lacking is additional options for character custimization
Cool. I was looking to put a steam punk arc murder mystery somewhere in this homebrew campaign. I hope I could gain a little more insight about what I could do with the whole thing.
Yessir
Forge of the Artificer is a great book to pick up if you are interest in steam punk and murder mystery/investigation. It actually covers both of those topics
Heck yeah
Whats the price of it?
Depends on your country and region, and whether you want a digital or physical version, or both. Here's a link to the marketplace page for it

Thank you.
Hi
Wsp
I used to be into dnd in 2022, i had bought some of the basic books, but wasnt really able to learn the rules because i moved out of the usa shortly after and left my books behind
Welcome! On the bright side, the rules have been updated since then, and the Basic Rules are free!
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
Oh shoot great, thanks so much
any specific topics in this page i should prioritize? or should i go through each one, one by one.
also i dont see artificier there
Artificer unfortunately isn't a free class (it's the only not free class!), and requires a purchase of the book it's printed in.
As for how to get started, reading through the Playing The Game section should help you get back into the swing of things!
Thanks so much
Also is there ways to play online, because where i live not many people play dnd
There sure are!
Awesome thanks\
I was just coming in to ask for a guide lol. Thanks!!
Are there any online tbt games that can be found that DON'T charge?
Yes, there are free games online but finding one can take some time. You may need to expand your search beyond the server.
Anything in #looking-for-players should be free since there's a separate channel for paid games
But spreading a wide net is always a good idea
Check the listings in #looking-for-players for games that want people, read the details, respond as appropriate and cross your fingers.
Type /looking and select the option for #looking-for-dm to advertise yourself as a new player in search of a group. Be sure to include your regular availability!
There are other Discord servers where people gather for games. You can find them in #looking-for-community .
Aside from here, you could also try LFG areas in sites like Reddit, Roll20 or the D&D Beyond forums to get started.

Hi, so I am very VERY new to D&D, I literally made 3 characters in D&D Beyond like half an hour ago. After reading the rules (btw I can't get any books irl), how should I start on playing online?
You can check out #find-a-game for information on how to find a group online. To make a post, type the appropriate command in any chat channel.
Hey
I started DnD not so long ago and I play a sorcerer, and I wanted to know what are the subclasses we get to choose at level 3
If you don’t have any of the books, I believe Draconic sorcerer is your only choice unless you have someone to share the books with.
And with the books ?
I don't get that part, because I chose draconic before starting, as a magic origin, and I'm supposed to get a sub class at level 3
Draconic is a subclass…
Are you playing 2014 rules? You get your sorcerer subclass at level one in those rules.
I don't know
So my friend invited me to a one shot and said we had to make a lvl 15 character and I have never made a character that high lvl before and I don’t got the books to research and learn the 5E so is there any tips on how to learn about this stuff with a reliable source?
You can make a level 15 character with the Free Basic Rules
Is it on their website?
Free basic D&D rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
Ok thank you
So what are ALL the subclasses for a sorcerer ?
Lemme put you on hold for a sec
queue elevator music
Aberrant Mind
Clockwork Soul
Divine Soul
Draconic Bloodline
Lunar Sorcery
Shadow Magic
Storm sorcery
Wild Magic
Spellfire sorcery
I don’t think I forgot any…
Thank you
What does “push, sap, or slow” property do?
For fighter’s lvl 9 tactical master ability?
Those are weapon mastery features. Push can push someone 10 feet away, slow reduces their movement speed by 10 feet and sap gives whoever you hit, disadvantage on their next attack
Oh ok so if I have mastery in a great sword I can preform those actions?
Or properties not action
If you’re a level 9 fighter, yes
Usually, it’s graze (the enemy takes damage equal to your attack modifier even if you miss)
Got it thanks
Well, what do you want to do?
You don’t really have to have the books
Oh
Well, Read up on the first few chapters of the free basic rules on #learn-to-play , and feel free to ask any questions you might have.

Oh thanks
Hello?
Hello
Oh hi I’m new and I’m kinda confused on what to do
I'm here on the same page, I just came because I wanted to see if I can get into a d&d group

hi im new
excuse me if i choose the fighter class how do i get it's subclass the PSI Warrior ( DnD's equivalent of jedi)
You must reach level three and have the book Tasha’a Cauldron of Everything
what should i do in that book?
The information of what the subclass has is in that book
If you have the book online, you’ll be able to select it on dnd beyond, or if you have it in person you can print out the sheet or just write down what features you have
so the psi warrior subclass is in that book so i just need to print it or write it's features?
Not print the book btw, print the sheet and write down the features from the book
oh so i need to print the sheets and features from the psi warrior and not the whole book?
I think you can do that, yeah. Though not sure (100% sure you can just copy it down by hand on a physical sheet tho)
ah i see
also do i need the discord avrae dnd ai to generate my character stats? or no
Nope
Roll it in front of your DM works just fine
for PbP i mean
Same answer
Avrae is usually preferred
But tbh that’s a question to ask your DM
alright
If you're using the 2024 rules, the Psi Warrior is in the core rulebook, and you just need to reach level 3.
if i am using the 2014 rules? is it not?
No, it's in the book "Tasha's Cauldron of Everything", which is a separate book from the 2014 Players Handbook.
ah ok
Hello, I'm really new to DND. Hoping to learn how to play it
Read up on the first few chapters of the free basic rules on #learn-to-play , and feel free to ask any questions you might have.
okay who can take me in im looking for group but no one takes me in
Once you’re ready and got the fundamentals down, you can check out #find-a-game for information on how to find a group online. To make a post, type the appropriate command in any chat channel.
but if im nice youll take me in dont forget 🫡
Didn’t forget! Though, even if you do join if my players don’t like you…
What I’m saying is no promises
yea thats fine i undertsand completely
But this first
okay
This is a bit of a weird question, I'm making a character sheet for the first time. But I see in races there is a fairy race and that sounds fun to be but its locked behind a paywall in dnd beyond. Is like allowed to still be a fairy even if I don't own the Adventures thing?
You can homebrew something, or ask someone to share their book (that you know, not on this server)
Alrighty ty!

hi
how do i post in the looking for dm thread?
Question, can you literally start from literal scratch...like no knowledge about DnD in a campaign?....I wanna like test this DnD thing ....I am pretty new to this😅
Read #find-a-game carefully as it explains the bot commands to use.
They start with /looking-for
Try having a read through the first couple of sections of the Free Rules to get a grasp of the terminology, then have a go at putting a character together for practice.
You'll need to pick a class, species and background. Let us know if you have any questions!
You could but that might be rough on the rest of the group you're playing with, having to teach you everything from scratch and using up their valuable playing time.
I'd suggest looking at #learn-to-play and the free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
nvr mind figured it out
can anyone explain the thousands of 5e books and how 2014 / 2024 works?
The books give the lore and subclasses.
The main difference between 2014 and 2024 are that in 2024 you use your background to help determine stats instead of species, all the classes have some changes (overall buffs), weapon mastery exists in 2024 (additional effects on weapons, given to a few classes) and some other minor changes to spells and feats
why didnt they do 6e?
Because 5e still has plenty of gas still left in the tank...
2024 just polishes and refines and simplifies what 2014 started
At the end of the day we can't answer why D&D didn't make a completely new edition
No your questions are fine (but also this is the channel to help folks new to D&D learn the core game rules and mechanics)
You can think of it like a video game update. Why make a new one when the original is still going strong?
thats what i was doing...
Hi sorry, I’m Nugget
And you’re fineeee. Welcome to the channel btw
So we have #learn-to-play which gives a nice overview and useful information to help get you started
At it's core, D&D is a collaborative storytelling roleplaying game steeped in high fantasy where players take the role of heroes fighting monsters, solving puzzles, dealing with problems, and generally "saving the world" kinds of things. The game requires a Game Master/Dungeon Master who is like the stage manager, typically 3-6 players playing characters, D&D rules to reference, character sheets to reference for player characters, dice, and an adventure to explore.
Here's the free basic rules you can reference: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
The DM sets the scene and asks the players what their characters do in that game context.
The players roleplay their characters and tell the DM what their character does in the game context.
The DM decides if a dice roll is needed (possible risk of failure) and then determines what the results mean in that game context.
Together the group explores and tells an engaging story through the game.
Hello, I'm new and looking for a group of players to do a session... What dice do i roll for that 😁
My initiative, saving throws, skills are either negative 3 or negative 4 what does that mean
that means that you messed up your stats big time
thats not even possible
Welp too bad for my character cause im keeping it that way, ill just say thats part of his luck
i didnt mean unlucky
I used dungeon beyond to make my character
i mean like impossible and NOT fun to play
With -3 or -4 the game is barely playable
then you didnt fill out the stats correctly
I could imagine you put modifiers where your attribute number should be
maybe
I see I'll try to fix it then
Like a 14 is a +2 but if you just put in 2 then thats a -4
yup
Like normally with standard array or point buy you cant even get below a -1 as your base modifier
and getting a -4 in rolled is a 1 in 1296 chance
Should i choose manual rolled or standard array
do i need a psionic dice for a psi warrior character?
Lowkey no idea how i got that
And everything i have is negative 3 or 4 lmao
That depends on the table you play at and what the DM wants the players to use
Psi warrior does give you psionic dice in their features so yes
are polyhedral dice be used for psionic?
Nice i fixed it and i got the stats i want
Absolutely negative charisma and decent stats on the rest
nah, we use imaginary dice and roll them in our head
Hii from the Pacific
What boom can I find the oathbreaker subclass? Is it the dmg?
Cheers
hi im new to dnd and this my first create character sheet so can someone give a review how done
first of all
Congrats on your character! I noticed a couple of things:
- You've multiclassed, which I wouldn't recommend for new players. Quite a few things I noticed are related to that.
- You've not selected any spells for your sorcerer class. You can do that in the spells tab.
- Your charisma is 10, but for sorcerers charisma is the most important stat, as it's their spellcasting ability.
- You've not added any starting equipment. Go to the inventory tab and you should see a button.
i dont reccomend multiclassing as a newbie
you dont have spells or good charisma
you also havent chosen your features
In addition to what everyone else said, your multiclass is also impossible since you lack the Charisma score requirement to multiclass out of Sorcerer. Stat requirements are part of the reason why multiclassing can be difficult 😅
ok i will try correct it and thank you very much for your help 👍
Your stats should be, imo:
8 str, 13 dex, 14 con, 12 int, 10 wis, 15 cha
+2 cha, +1 dex
It seems you’re still missing:
- Your sorcerer class proficiencies
- Your sorcerer level 1 spells (& cantrips)
Hello. Anywhere else then the looking for players channle can i find players

Stats should be +2/+1 not +1/+1/+1
+2 cha +1 dex
You want 14 dex 14 con as your secondary stats
17 cha because cha fuels everything a sorc does
hey need some help after a break
so i have a rogue with proficiency in theves tools
it comes with "thieves knowledge" so I suppose to know more about secret pockets, valuables, hidden compartments etc.
how do we calculate this bonus
when looting usual check is inteligence investigation
can I add thieves tools proficiency bonus on top of that?
If there is a scenario where the campaign or gm calls for "Thieves Tool's" you can apply your proficiency bonus to that.
Typically that goes for lock picking and trap disarming as the most common
In addition to dexterity or intelligence or whatever stat is to be called upon
hmm, ok i'm not sure where i got my expanded description from
how is it now
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/157154528/Favjyb
What is this fascination with +1 int lol
So in dnd your stat modifiers go up by 1 per two points in stats
14 dexterity is important for that reason cuz that's a +2 modifier to your initiative but also to your armor class which helps you survive
Considering that Sorcerers aren't proficient with any armor
Intelligence is for a few skill checks but nothing you'd miss too much with 12
idk how remove the armor
You aren't wearing any at the moment
i remove them now i was wear chain armor
Yes don't wear any
You just need your normal clothes
14 dexterity 12 intelligence will handle the rest, not 13 dexterity 13 intelligence though
ok i will fix dexterity and int
btw Thank you very much You helped me enormously, and I really appreciate it
gotta go
Hiya, I have been playing D&D for a few years but never been a dm before. I am starting a campaign with others who have never played after my previous group got shut down. Do you guys have any tips for character creation and being a dm in general?
have each player make sure they have the following in their backstory: a short term goal (could be handled in a few sessions, but is a reason for them to join a party), an intermediate goal (could be handled after maybe 6 months or so of sessions, a reason to stick with a party), and a long term goal (something that would end their character arc at the end of a campaign or series of campaigns, a reason to settle down from adventuring).
Ok, definitely will try to do that. For now some don’t even have characters, and others have vague ideas so i think it will be helpful to get them to think about this, thank you :)
it doesn't have to be a novel, just reasons to drive them forward. its better if they come up with something important to them, since that will get them more invested. it also adds content for the DM to work with when making quests and adventures for the party later.
?dmtips
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
it would be a good idea for the party and the DM to get together informally and talk a bit about what kind of game everyone wants, and ideas of some kind of party roles people want to try. nothing as formal as a session 0, that will come later when the concrete details will be hammered out.
I get the point you're trying to make, but what you just described is what I consider to be session 0
i meant in more really broad and general concepts. gives people something to jump off of for brainstorming and coming back to iron out details before actually playing.
Agreed. That is pretty much session 0.
I do have one planned, finding it quite hard to coordinate but hopefully it’ll go well- thank you so much for the responses they are much appreciated:D
Sure, I think doing multiple check ins throughout the process is a good thing. You can keep it as informal as you like to start out
if there's open communication back and forth between everyone leading up to the game to work out the details, a formal session 0 might not even be needed.
i'm also more used to meatspace where people have lives and its generally good to have a devoted time to physically sit down together and work on stuff.
Hey y'all first I'm new to dnd and why does the server not a allow typewriter text?
Do you mean a code block like this?
Accessibility and moderation requirements.
I assume special characters are restricted because text-reader programs have difficulty parsing the text. If you have further questions about server policy, you can ask the mods over in #moderator-support .
If you've got basic questions about how the game works, this channel is the right place.
If you've got more in depth questions about how to DM, we have #dm-discussion for those topics.
#dm-discussion would be the best place to get advice from fellow DMs
Ok thank you

Thank you :) I'll give it a read and lyk, I appreciate it!!
Just to be 100% sure though, before you start, you mentioned class making. Do you mean character building, or are you intending on creating a custom class?
Oh no I meant character building my bad 😭
Creating a custom class sounds hella cool tho I didn't know I could do that
yo i am new to dnd and would love to learn how to play can sum one help me
Yeah me too
No problem at all! The terminology comes with time. Just wanted to make extra sure, since custom content (known as homebrew content) isn't something I'd ever recommend to a new player.

alr ty dang this is a helpfull com
Ik you can like mix and match with subclasses and stuff
Sorlock sounds cool
Or is that just a BG thing I dunno
Guys for a beginner what’s the best character. There’s a lot to choose from and it’s a little bit overwhelming
Ohhh yeah fair enough
The term you're looking for is "multiclassing", which is something else I wouldn't recommend to a new player
I'd love to learn with you guys @surreal heart @wary cypress
YES PLS
Idk much about dnd character creation but I imagine it's quite similar to normal character creation
Just go with your preferred build style
Are you looking for something straightforward? The three main steps to creating a character are:
- Pick a species
- Pick an origin
- Pick a class
The class is usually the most complicated part. If you're looking for straightforward classes, I'd recommend Fighter, Barbarian, Rogue, or Monk.
Oh yea I heard it gets complicated
If you're looking for mechanically simpler classes, go with fighter. Especially champion subclass.
Ohh okay thank you that makes a lot of sense
Like a wizard or a warrior
i already have a class i would love to play and its a rouge
Rogue is a lot of fun!
The class I really wanna try is warlock
i just love assasins and those things
Eldritch blast my way through the game 😭😭
AHAHHA
Well my usual favourite is something like a battlemage
@copper snow you're lucky. There's a warlock video game incoming...
Something that uses melee but also magic
Warlock makes a great battle mage
Woah rlly?
Idk about lucky lmao I don't really have a pc
i have a question waht race's are there
Yesss plus I LOVE the whole vibe
Are you in any games btw?
Yeah, a teaser just dropped at the game awards yesterday. you can check it out on youtube. The game will also be on consoles.
There are a lot, but you can find the free ones here, in the Basic Rules:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-origins#SpeciesDescriptions
There's sooo many
I think if you go on pintrest and look up dnd races you should be able to visualise them
alr bc i saw the movie and thought i wanne play that now
Hey folks please do not solicit or organize games outside of the Looking For Game channels (see #find-a-game for more information on how to use our LFG channels). I'm seeing a lot of folks asking to join a game here in channel and that's off-topic. Thanks!
I had a PS4 a while ago (not anymore)
And I was stuck on my PS3 for some time until the hard drive for it gave up just last week 😭😭
That gave me a push to join this dnd server

You can pattern your character after characters in other media
That said not everything translates mechanically into D&D 1:1
Idk but you can call your character Oliver and introduce a plot twist.
ok I'll see myself out...
no i mean like the movie and novle Oliver Twist
It is not an official playable species/race but I have homebrewed it for players. Here is some info from the official source but there are un-official tools online to help you craft the character. https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1075-sneak-peek-check-out-the-fairy-race-in-the-wild#fairy-racial-traits
Is a half Dragomborn half Aasimar possible
Mechanically, no.
You can say you're half of each, but you'd just choose the species abilities of one of the two.
I dmed you if you can check
Oh so it's just cosmetic
I see
That's a good way to think of it. Cosmetically, you might be both, but your actual mechanics and abilities might just be those of the Aasimar.
I'm not currently looking for a game, but thank you.
That's fair thanks for your help ^^
@timid locust if you are a dragonborn can you like breath fire on you dagger and make it a flaiming dagger?
No, that is not a feature that dragonborns are capable of
I think if he finds a way to use flame weapon as a rogue he can like "make it look" like it
If that makes sense
It'd be a waste of a spell slot unless its purely visual
Dipping weapons into surfaces or spells is definitely homebrew, else you could just carry a torch around and light up weapons
As you get deeper into D&D, one of the things you learn about is reflavoring abilities. Which is kinda what DOSH was just talking about with describing someone as being half dragonborn and half aasimar. You can change the appearance and description of things, but you can't change the mechanics of how it actually works. Dragonborn have a "breath weapon" that can let them breath fire (or other elements), but you can't do that "on" a weapon to increase its damage or change its damage type.
However there are a lot of other abilities in the game that do that. There's plenty of ways to increase a weapon's damage, or add extra elemental damage on top. If you built a character with one of those abilities, you could describe it as the dragonborn breathing onto the weapon. But you can't just make up that ability if you don't already have it
I think the idea of a half Tiefling half Aasimar is more awesome LMAO I changed my mind
I think I'll pick the stats of the Aasimar though
Sounds like a cool character idea
Tyty
Now to go write them a tragic backstory 😭😭
The closest thing to coating a weapon as a Dragonborn I just thought of could be through using basic poison
You can easily (ish) add poison to a weapon. I have players wanting to make flaming things all the time. I ask them, so what part of the dagger is flammable? If you have oil you can do this by coating the weapon and lighting it but there are lot of steps/actions in that process that might not make it worth it. That said the rule of cool might apply.
Instead of just dipping the weapon, the Dragonborn swallows the poison and runs it through their mouth before spitting it out on a weapon like a toxic breath thing
Dragonborn gonna be spending a lot of time in the bathroom after that one
Its probably not that big of a deal if it already has acid breath or something (I know they aren't the same, but flavoring)
You can always just take magic initiate for Green Flame Blade
That's what my Thief did.
@wary cypress there u go
Arcane Trickster is a Rogue Subclass
Arcane Trickster is a rogue subclass in the player's handbook, but its not part of the free basic rules. If you're looking at the class options on D&D beyond, it won't show up unless you purchase the sourcebook its included in
Or steal it, he is a rogue after all
so like waht are the sub classes of rogue
i am stuck between arcane trickster and asassin
Are you usng 2014 or 2024 rules?
If 2014, I would recommend Arcane Trickster just cause Assassin has some mechanical issues
They were asking after the Basic Rules earlier today, so they're probably using the current rules.
ye you know the 3 guys who asked like me , morning and one other guy we want to make a campaign but we are making the charicters and i would like to use a sub class
I just got into dnd and was wondering what class and species would be best if I wanted to play as an assassin
If you're using the free Basic Rules, there's only one subclass available for each class. In order to get more options, you'll need to actually purchase a source book such as the Player's Handbook.
Assassin is a rogue subclass, so you’ll definitely want to use rogue as your class at level 1. Your species can be anything you want.
Species doesn't really interact with your class all that much, so you can pick whatever you think is coolest.
Rogue would probably make the best assassin, as they even have a subclass named "Assassin".
Oh ok thank you
alr bc i asked in dnd discussions and they said arcane trickstr
I was thinking of making a halfling assassin but wasn't sure if halfling was the best species
Helloo, I'm trying to think of a way to help my player with a tiefling barbarian have more interesting combat, but she doesn't want much magic or magical items. Kinda new to being a DM so i was wondering if there were suggestions for something like that
Unfortunately, Arcane Trickster isn't the free subclass associated with Rogue. You'll have to purchase the Player's Handbook to have access to it.
TF I NEED TO PAY
If you're looking for DM advice, we have the #dm-discussion channel just for that!
Okay thanks, I wondered if i should go there or here since im kind of a newcomer
And a Halfling would work fine as an Assassin
Especially in 2024 rules, you can really pick whatever species you want for a class
YEA LOL
Hi
Hi guys, are there any good free to use dnd websites or apps to start with?
Some of these dont appear on my player guidebook.
The Free Basic Rules found on D&D Beyond are a good place to start
Visit #learn-to-play for everything you need to get started!

Thanks, but what about the place to play the game? I can’t really get a physical version since I don’t have anyone to play with
DMs advertise games on this server and you can find their posts in #looking-for-players You can also make a post for your self in #looking-for-dm Another place to look would be #looking-for-community which advertise larger servers. Generally, it can take time to find a game as there are a lot more players than DMs. D&D Beyons forums have some advertised games and you can check 3rd party sites like Roll20 which is an Online virtual table top and has a section for recruiting and advertising.
DnD is primarily played in the mind. It's all imagination, after all. Some groups that play online also use programs referred to as Virtual Table Top programs (VTTs). Most of these are free for the player. You don't need to worry about which one to use, since your DM will decide for the table if they use one.
You can make the character using a fill-in sheet. If you need the book check your library or used book stores or work with your DM.
alr ty
So like how do I do the looking for player thing I'm lowkey dumb 😭
But they too will be limited to only whats available in the free rules or System Reference Document.
If you want to make a post in our LFG channels, please read #find-a-game carefully.
You will need to use the bot commands to create the post and they all start with /looking-for then select the type (if you're a game that needs players, select players, if you're a player looking for a group select the dm option). The bot gives you a form, fill it out and submit. Bot creates the post in the specified channel and attaches a thread to it. Use the thread to make any corrections, updates, and communicate with interested folks.
You can type the bot commands anywhere on this server that you can type in.
Yea I'm only confused cuz we're 3 players looking for a dm
So if I use looking for a dm will that direct me to a session in need of a player or just a dm looking for players
Does thst make sense
You would use the looking-for-dm option as you are a group of players looking for a group/DM
So use the /looking-for then dm option
Yes got it
Thank youuu
pinging a moderator to talk about content piracy probably isn't a good idea
Psst. You're telling the mod of the official Wizards of the Coast DnD how you pirate content.
Just starting getting interested in D&D, any advice for those typically too nervous for roleplaying?

The linked article above has some great tips for getting the hang of role playing
It's not pirating if your using a book from the library or working with someone who has the material such as the DM.
True. That's a perfectly valid way to get access to that information
That brings up a good question. If you worked with someone here to navigate the character build does that run afoul of WotC? For example do they need to be in your campaign to make it legit? That would seem to be the spirit of the rules.
As long as no explicit information on the contents of the books are shared, it’s fine I believe
Content sharing on D&D Beyond is meant to only be used for active campaigns, and only for people in that campaign. Soliciting content sharing and setting up dummy campaigns just to share content is against the terms of service
Please be specific if you're saying to go check public libraries for official D&D materials to build from (for free). Because otherwise the other ways would be breaking server rules.
Colossus also has it correct as far as the terms of service for content sharing on DnDBeyond.
