I'd say read through the first couple of sections of the Free Rules to get a grasp of the terminology and try putting some characters together for practice.
I was just about to say the same thing. I forgot to mention that. Its very hard to build a character if you haven't read the rules yet
I haven’t paid a single cent yet I created my own character on the website. It’s is a very good place to creat a character
Hey, I know this is gonna be a tough question. But my friends and I very much want to play DnD. We don't have a DM and no one has really played before except one other person in the group and he doesn't know how to DM either and also does not WANT too. I am interested in DM'ing for so I was wondering if there is anyone that could maybe help me learn how to set up a game and all the stuff I would need WHILE running it and the stuff that would be necesarry to learn before hand. I have been reading the manuals and stuff and watching videos. I just don't feel like I am really retaining and understand the information and I learn very well from someone teaching me directly. I am not asking for them to do it FOR me. Just a bit of a guide or a person I could ask some questions for learning how to DM and how make the game work well enough where everyone will have fun.

- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.
- Learn how to be a Dungeon Master with this YouTube video or D&D Beyond article.
- The D&D Free Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- Decide what kind of campaign you want to run. Here’s a few good options for new DMs.
- Get advice from your fellow Dungeon Masters in #dm-discussion and #dm-world-building.
I was creating a character on DnD beyond, and didn't realise how much depth it needed. Like I usually don't create my character's backstories till a bit later 😭😭
what website did u use?
Assuming you know the rules...
Grab a pre-written adventure, do some reading/watching (I'd recommend the Quickstart Guide, the DM section of the Basic Rules starting here, and this Ginny Di video), and dive in!
I have a longer list here: #dm-discussion message You can also search the server for dm advice and/or dm tips. This topic comes up all the time!
The links I shared above are a good start. For more detailed conversation about DMing, including getting veterans' perspectives, head to #dm-discussion!
You don't need a lot, especially if it's a practice character.
I favour the three sentence approach: something about where you're from or your early years, a turning point such as how you got your skills or class, and something of a goal you seek through adventuring.
Hello everyone
I am currently newly starting the game as a DM in Roll 20.
I have currently made things as notable characters and a story line, but I'm struggling on finding and making maps for the dungeon my party is going to travel through. Does anyone have a good place to find good map assets for my campaign?
Dyson Logos, 2-Minute Tabletop, Neutral Party, Dr. Mapzo, Angela Maps, and Reddit (r/dndmaps and r/battlemaps).
You can also make maps with tools like Inkarnate. Here's a bunch of options (https://www.dnd-compendium.com/dm-resources/maps-map-tools).
Hii ppl, me and my friends have decided to try out dnd is there any good campaigns for starters??
Check out the published modules Lost Mines of Phandelver and Stormwreck Isle
The starter sets! The newest Heroes of the Borderlands would be perfect.
Or the new one, yep. A handful of published adventures are meant for new players and DMs
How do I find trustworthy and wholesome groups???
Hello everyone, I am quite new to DnD and just read about the rules etc. However my friend group isn’t into DnD and I am looking for ppl to play campaigns together. Is there any channel where I can look for groups who accept new players?
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
Time, perseverance and clear boundaries.
Read through the channel linked in the bot post above!
Alright, thank you 😊
Ditto what Mr Smith said, but to elaborate:
Have a good intake process, whether that's a questionnaire, an interview, a preliminary one-shot, or all of the above. Obviously folks can lie, but putting hoops in place will weed out some candidates. Being able to communicate what you want out of the game and knowing what it looks like when others are on the same page will go a long way toward making for a good experience.
Well said. That's pretty much it, in a nutshell.
Hey I'm looking to learn the game and I don't know anyone to teach me is anyone up to help

Oh, I see. I just usually spend hours on character arcs, so was surprised it came so early. I really appreciate your advice btw so tysm! I hope you have a wonderful rest of your day 💙
Thxxx
Its important to remember that D&D is a game, and your character is what you use to play that game. You shouldn't spend hours on your backstory and planning out character arcs, because the adventures that your character goes on happen while playing the game. The point of a backstory is just to tell you why your character starts adventuring. You should never write a character where the most interesting thing in their life has already happened to them.
Frontstory > Backstory
I like Colville's view: "If you do write [a backstory], make a backstory that explains why you're a hero or that helps you understand how to play your character." A hundred words.
Ah, I understand! I think it's because I used to role-playing quite a lot, but not role-playing games ?
I used to do a little bit of Freeform role play like that many years ago, so I kinda know what you mean. At least the role play that I did had very little in the way of combat or adventuring, so that type of thing mostly happened “offscreen.” Whereas with D&D, that’s the point of the game, so it would detract from the fun if you came into it with lots of accomplishments and history that doesn’t tie into the story that you’re actually playing through
That’s so kind of you for explaining all that, so honestly TSYM! 🫂🫂
you got this, the best way to learn is by doing!
Start by joining one shots.
You can find independent ones, as well as one shots that are part of a West Marches style of campaign, or even from Adventurers League.
The more one shots you play, the more opportunities for you to meet people in the community, and the more chances you have to find people you get along with to form a dnd group.
Thank you!
I already have the name of a campaign and kind of what it will be about
But I didn't start the preparations
They're just dice with different amounts of sides. A die by itself has no innate properties/rules, it's more that other rules invoke the rolling of dice and caring about their sides
For example, most commonly, Damage. A Shortsword will deal 1d6 damage, whereas a Greataxe would do 1d12 damage. Of course, there are multiple other details which would push someone to use the "weaker" weapon, but this is just an example of using different dice.
There's a good overview of the different dice and when you would use them in the free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game#Dice
?tag new dice
Dice
Dice add randomness to the game. The 20-sided die (d20) is the most important one you’ll use. When the outcome of an action is uncertain, the game uses D20 Tests to determine success or failure. The higher your roll, the more likely it is that you succeed. The most common use for dice other than the d20 is to determine damage.
When you need to roll dice, the rules tell you how many dice to roll of a certain type, along with any numbers to add or subtract. For example, “3d8 + 5” means you roll three eight-sided dice, add them together, and add 5 to the total.

Hi im new here on the server and im not fluent in English.
I don’t know much about tabletop RPGs or D&D yet, but i really wanna learn. i've got a feeling i’d love all the lore, the rules, the dice chaos the whole adventure vibe.
Welcome to the hobby.
Take your time reading the first two chapters of the free basic rules in the bot post above.
The best way to get into dnd is to play single session adventures that can be completed in a 2 to 4 hour sitting known as a one shot.
Hi
Welcome!
My friends all play and and I want to learn and become a dungeon master so I can torture them
I…wouldn’t recommend that as a motivation. At all.
By "tortue" you mean all have fun together right? 😉
Because otherwise this really isn't the right game
D&D is about collaborating together to have fun together
I don’t remember that definition of torture, lemme grab my dictionary
lol
Ive got some great ideas
Get them trapped in the room and have hints dotted around meaning that they need to kill themselves then they wake up from a dream then there is a boss fight 🙂
My friends told me I need to learn alot tho
…demon slayer?
Yeee
Check out #learn-to-play to see some resources, specifically the first few chapters of the free basic rules
So with the dice is a 20 the best the a 1 the worst
Nice my YouTube fyp has served me well
That's true if you're rolling a d20 yeah
when you're rolling things, higher is typically better, as it will mean you are inflicting more damage or regaining more hit points or having better chances with making an attack or save
Can someone look at my character sheet ive just made Dave
Sure
Send the link into #character-discussion
How do I get the link
I have but what do I do with the search bar
The link from the search bar
I'm on an app
Ah
I don’t use the app, so I can’t say. There should be a place somewhere that lets you download a pdf
Or get a link
Found it
You have to go to the end page then export as pdf then you get a link
Good old dave
You can also get a shareable link like so: https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/57717913/dcItx0
hey guys tomorrow is my first time playing dnd and im dming, its with a group of freinds we all have never played, tommorrow we are going to do campaign zero anyone have any tips for campaing zero and or dm tips?
Exciting! "Session Zero" is really just a chance for you all to decide on what's what for the adventure ahead, making sure everyone is on the same page. If you're the DM, you may wish to visit #dm-discussion or #dm-world-building
ah ok ty il check it out rn
So when im playing i can try to do anything I want?
The DM sets the scene and asks what your character does in that context.
You can always try...
It's a good idea to set expectations and boundaries about acceptable player behavior and topics before playing - the goal is to ensure everyone has a fun time.
So if someone swings a sword at me I can parry it with peculiar body parts and roll a 20
Not quite
Generally speaking, it's better to get an idea of the rules and what's normally possible in game
☹️
It's ok, you'll learn
Yeah
More like the DM says, "the manticore attacks... and gets a 17 to hit. Your armor class is 15 so it hits and you take 15 points of damage as it bites into you."
What if I make my dungeon in minecraft
You can use different tools to play D&D yes.
Some folks play by "theater of the mind" where the DM describes things and the players envision where their characters are
Others use printed maps.
Others play online using virtual tabletops with maps and tokens.
Some play in real life with 3d minis and maps.
Ahhh
?tag new online
^ Here's an article that goes over some of the tools folks use to play D&D online.
Ook
idk if im doing the looking for groups right, idk how to use them or make my own thread
Have you checked out the instructions in #find-a-game ?
it just says the rules and stuff
Did you read it though? There's bot commands you have to use to create a post.
Hint: the bot commands start with /looking-for
You can type that bot command anywhere you can type on this server
yeah i tried that before
It should have given you 4 possible options to pick from - /looking-for then select dm to create a post in #looking-for-dm to tell folks you're looking for a group/game to join
Or /looking-for then players to create a post in #looking-for-players if you're a DM looking for a group of players to join your game/campaign.
Or /looking-for then community to create a post in #looking-for-community to advertise your D&D community server/wesstmarches/non-standard D&D games (multiple DMs, more than one group of players, etc.).
Or /looking-for paid to create a post in #paid-looking-for-game to advertise your paid D&D games/campaigns.
Worst case scenario, look through existing posts in those channels and respond in the threads of ones you're interested in to indicate your interest
im just trying to find a game to join
Well I just listed ways you can do that using our Looking For Game channels
You can also use Roll20, Demiplane, and other sites to also find games
Even the DnDBeyond Forums has a section devoted for Looking For Games
but i dont have a game i wanna join one that already exist
So look through the posts in #looking-for-players and respond to them - either direct message the game poster or post a message inside the thread attached to the game post to indicate interest.
That's folks looking for players for their D&D game
Or even look through the #looking-for-community game posts and join one of those D&D servers to see what games they're hosting
Greetings
How now, good friend, how fairest thou on this morrow/afternoon/evening?
I am well how are you ?
Good enough. I’m alive.
I’m in the process learning about DnD
how are you liking the material so far?
is it possible to play it on Minecraft
What, dnd?
I mean, it’s extraordinarily unconventional, yet…
maybe?
Not traditionally tho
Uh I mean it’d be a very nontraditional format, but I guess it could work if you have:
- A way to communicate
- A way to roll dice
- A way to use your character sheet
- A way to run monster statblocks
Quite a bit
Kinda had an introduction with it a few years back with BG3
i have yet to play that but i hear it is good
I didn’t progress very far lol
I’m trying to think of what kinda character would fit me
So far i think Fighter is a good start
What playstyle do you want?
Melee, ranged, spellcaster, martial, support, utility, etc.
Naming a few things you want in a character could help
Doesn’t even have to be from the list above
Probably Melee
Do you wanna use spells, weapons or both?
Weapons
Aight, that narrows it down. Also, weapon or unarmed?
Weapon
So no monk
I’ve got a Backstory for my character if that’s allowed i assume that depends on the DM ?
Yes
Fighter
Yeah it’s pretty much between fighter, barbarian and rogue.
Sweet!
I should rephrase
As a common rule, every character has a backstory
That’s regardless of the DM (usually)
The details of what’s allowed on the backstory is DM dependent
I see
I’m very interested in playing at some point
Would you like to hear the Backstory for my character ?
Send it in #character-discussion
I just pulled the trigger and bought my very first Player's Handbook! I'm excited to learn more about D&D.
From where
from a store
Obviously but like Amazon…etc
D&D Beyond. I'd considered Books-a-Million, as they have a Buy One Get One Half Off deal on the three core books, but...
I didn't want to get ahead of myself! So I just got the one for now.
Ooo!!!
Even when looking at the 3 core books on BAM, I would have had to pick a 4th book! That's how they getcha.
i mean the way ddb gets you is by making the books only exist in their walled garden for as long as they see fit with no option to take them to other vtts
Good evening, captain obvious
hi captain dad jokes
Pleased to meet ya.
I only wanted the physical book to start. I'll consider a digital version later down the line if I feel a need for it!
you wont need it
physical books are the way to go imho
physical is just better, manual adding on ddb is always an option
That's what I'd figured. Start small and go from there.
I also have a Essentials Kit and a Starter Set, but those are from 4 or 5 years ago, I think!
then you can also play 2014 XD
From what I can tell in my reasearch, that means they'd fall under the 2014 Player's Handbook, right?
yup!
also hey, you want to be a DM?
(from your role)
That’s what I am planning to do, just getting one dnd book. Planning on buying mine on ThriftBooks. It is on sale for $39.73 but are on backorder.
It's something I'd considered. I'd like to get the hang of being a player first!
Makes sense
Well, newcomers who haven’t played before often also have the player role
Just a quick question again, so half the Fighter subclasses have something to do with knights right? Is the difference between these knight based Fighter subclasses and a Paladin basically where their power is channeled from?
In Fighter's case, rigorous training and in Paladin's case, a divine sworn oath?
That’s the difference between fighters and paladins, not just the subclasses
(Cuz I just realized how closely Paladin and half of Fighter is)
There's a few Fighter subclasses like Battle Master that felt more disorganized and more "wild" to me, Paladins always have this organized feel meanwhile regardless
Oh! Well that's just because I'd considered it. I wasn't sure if there were any DM related channels that I could peruse and get a feel for, that would require the role in Discord.
#dm-discussion and #dm-world-building are just that
I understand! I wasn't sure if those channels were only accessable if you had the role in Discord is what I meant!
nope, not the case🙃
Oh, actually, I was correct!
I just changed to only Player, and those channels went away!
they are not visible, but you can just turn all channels on and acces them
You can still access them by looking at #channel-guide
How do you get your name all shiny like?
the jack of all trades role
Having the role of both a DM and player
Nitro or special roles
I see I see! I'm not too familiar with Discord, either! I've just been in a few servers with friends where there aren't as many channels or options!
Thanks for the help. I'll change to Player and try to add the DM channels manually!
Welp, glad to have ya here! If you got any questions, feel free to ask and me or any of the wonderful folks here will gladly answer.
yup, feel free to ask
I appreciate it! You've all already been so helpful and informative. I hope to see you all around even more! I'll check back in when the Player's Handbook arrives!
Quick follow up question actually, so we established that Fighters/Paladins have knightly elements, could any marital class in general be a knight in that case (without flavoring)
Any class can be a knight
no class can be anything without flavoring
Hm fair, I was thinking of how odd a Wizard Knight sounds in my tongue (but Eldritch Knight sounds just fine)
a wizard would be locked into exactly one personality
a knight is a title, not something you do
a bard can be a knight too, same for a ranger, rogue, and every class
conversely, paladins dont have to be knights
A Paladin without a knighty feel probably takes extra flavoring
You just need to swear an oath, tbf
(In dnd)
yup
Like i could swear an oath rn and become a horse girl (paladin)
lol me to I joined a week ago. Never been in a public server before in my life till now ( due to being a kid) but I am in my 20’s so I am able to know.
Don’t reveal your age
you dont have to be 18+ for servers
tbf they did say somewhere in their twenties which is vague enough
I know my parents were not fond of me joining server which people I don’t know.
I know
What platform do people usually use when playing D&D online? I use to play on talespire app. But what is commonly used? o.O
Discord calls is often used, plus VTT’s like Owlbear Rodeo
most common i've seen for online is holding the campaign itself on roll20 and then doing VC on discord
Thanks! I've heard of roll20 but not Owlbear Rodeo. I guess it does depend on the group you're in
Owlbear is the easiest to use VTT I've used. Very easy to get into. No massive bells and whistles, but that's a positive.
I'd only advise more complicated ones if you have some specific requirements, like roll automation or crazy wall setups.
well, that, and you can choose to add exactly the ones you want/need, via the free extensions
yeah Im quite new still. Something easy to just jump into is a plus for me
Your art is cool!
who?👀
You👉 👈
hello.
Hello
Hallo
i’m new to dnd and the server.
very clever.
Thank you
well this is the right place to get into dnd
Wait this is cool
Hmmm.
Are you comfortable with irl gameplay? If not, how about online calls? If not, how about text-based chats?
Greetings
Hi
Helo guys
i do like critical role, but mainly because of ashley johnson and laura bailey.
I've been wanting to watch this, It's very dauting to me
Hi new I’m Nugget
I would offer but I, as well, am new. So probably not the best DM
Hi nugget I’m new
two for two, nugget’s on fire.
You can certainly DM as a first time
It’s a learning journey for both of us in this case
So true
I am?! I don’t feel hot tho, and I don’t see any smoke
Come on man, I can smell it from here..
So
it’s actually fun to watch if you don’t understand dnd.
just people talking and yelling and gaming.
it’s me gaming with friends.
Check the listings in #looking-for-players for games that want people, read the details, respond as appropriate and cross your fingers.
Type /looking and select the option for #looking-for-dm to advertise yourself as a new player in search of a group. Be sure to include your regular availability!
There are other Discord servers where people gather for games. You can find them in #looking-for-community .
Aside from here, you could also try LFG areas in sites like Reddit, Roll20 or the D&D Beyond forums to get started.
c’mon, nobody wants cold nuggets.
Hahah, yeah I mean, sounds like a blast. There's just... so much content
If you’re referring to chicken nuggets, that’s my cousin
Check out #learn-to-play , specifically the first two chapters of the free basic rules, to get a grasp on the material. Feel free to ask questions.
matt mercer could read the phonebook and i’d still watch.
Well no I know how to play!
Oh?
I've read all 3 books back to back multiple times
Well then I extend this advice to any newbie
look at the veteran over here.
Then why do you have the new to dnd role
Welp, dnd involves a decent bit of reading
Because I haven't been able to play with anyone for more than like, 3 total sessions 🙏 😭
Oh
Ouch

hiii
howdy!
wsp
For my advent calendar I got a dnd one cause it has couple sets of dice and a really cool storage container
hello
I'm making my first campaign map
Is there anywhere i can send photos
Is this your first time DMing? How familiar are you with the rules?
Probably a good question for #dm-discussion
But honestly, almost any creature that's gonna give a challenge to the party will work. Heavily depends on their level too
Though what makes a boss great isn't gonna be what the creature is. A basic bugbear isn't gonna be any better boss alone compared to any other monster. What makes a boss great is the importance of the character of the boss, where the party either has defeating that creature as their goal, or knows of their danger
Hey do you have a campaign I can join
To use this server to find a group check out the instructions in #find-a-game !
Thanks
Does anyone have like a cheat sheet to say what to roll for for like when ur players do something and what die, the dices and stuff confuse me
It depends on what that something is 🙂
Most, but not all, dice rolls are on the d20
so can a evil char be a follower of a good aligned god
can be
But if they are a cleric or paladin would it not make less sense
?
it can still work
Whether it makes obvious sense and whether it's possible are two different things
I just made my character on d&d beyond how do I do a campaign with people
my god there is a lot to learn here
its a bit too much, is there and easier way to learn ?
Ok I'm new as well
Been watching videos I'm falling in love with it I mean I usually use my imagination for other games but this is different
So you don't need to learn everything all at once! That's not how anyone learns anything. The first two chapters of the Basic Rules should be enough to get you familiar. The rest can be consulted as needed.
Learn-to-play sessions are offered through the virtual weekends (see the server's Events tab), and you might also find those sorts of sessions at local game/hobby shops and/or libraries.
Is tiefling good?
so i know i am asking for a lot but is there anyone who can help me make my character and help in getting some experience as a player. its a lot for me to take in and i am getting overwhelmed. tbh (dm open)
On paper It’s stronger than other races
A good DM isn’t going to let half-demons walk around town without scrutiny, though
What dose that mean
Can you use Luck Points to get advantage on initiative rolls?
Folk that live in a world where monsters are real are unlikely to be welcoming of one walking into their home, even if it seems to be wearing clothes and have manners.
Tieflings are stereotypically discriminated in society
It's a d20 test as far as I know, so I would think it does work. #dnd-rules is the best place for close scrutiny of the rules, though.
But otherwise is a versatile race, having a bit of everything needed in a race
Fire resistance is nice, darkvision is a staple, three spells by level 5 that are once per long rest
Those spells use charisma as a casting modifier which means that Tieflings make for better Paladins, Sorcerers, Warlocks, Bards
But they can also make a mean Rogue too
Ah also the only difference between Tiefling subraces are the three spells they get by level 5, with the exception of Winged Tiefling which allows permanent flight at the cost of no spells, that subrace is beyond op
There are other flying races
So the Winged Tiefling variant isn't unique in that aspect
Also note that the 2014 and 2024 tiefling options work differently
What about a tiefling ranger on a rule of 2014
I’ve thought human ranger is a fun class but I want to be more unique hence tiefling got my interest
It’s fine. Nothing special, some argue not even something great. I say not bad.
Yeah, that would work fine.
I just wanna get out of my comfort zone of being a human all the time so yeah
In general you can use any race with any class, though if you're using the old old 2014 rules with strict stat bonuses, some races will be a little better at some classes to start out
If you're not, then it's really just whatever seems like fun to you
I’m just looking for what’s fun even if it’s not the strongest
I enjoy the role playing part the most so
Then a tiefling ranger would work fine
So what I need to know as a tiefling is
Yes I’m stronger on average then some classes
But socially I wouldn’t really be accepted
That depends on the DM, actually. Some people don't lean into the discrimination aspect of the species.
And tiefling naturally do have wings or not?
I know they have horns and tails and fangs
Not all have wings, no.
Some dms are liable to ban winged tieflings and other races that have flight
Oh was here- hi everyone, nice to meet you all
Up to the DM, but maybe!
A tiefling with horns, halo, and tail would be so cool
There's a saying in the hobby: "Flavor is free." What that means is description that doesn't change how something works is often acceptable to make your character/ability/whatever more closely fit your idea. It's just that the mechanics don't change.
Yeah just halo or a symbol for my characters past :P
But it's always worth checking with your DM and table.
Okaaayyy
I might be looking into joining a paid game, are there any things I need to be careful about? Any red flags I should be aware of?
Scams
Just a good rule of thumb, try not to get scammed
Apart from that, not much else apart from a regular game I don’t think, but I’m not too familiar with paid games.
hey
Figured as much, but any specific thing that could give away that its a scam?
how's goinn!!
get proves!!
Hmm, payment up front before you even meet them. Requiring art, no details on the game itself.
Outside of that, you'll probably still want to make sure the DM does a session 0 to confirm that everyone is on the same page. Some general questions 'What is being run (is the DM making it up, running something specific, are you choosing etc), any content/trigger warnings, play schedule, payment schedule etc
thanks!
Hey guys I'm new!
Welcome to the server and the hobby!
Thanks!!!
Any questions we can help with?
Hi new, I’m Nugget! Welcome!
Acctually my name is New not newso I take this as an insult erm
Ah, but when you introduced yourself, you wrote “new”, not “New”.

Hi everybody
Hi 👋
I've never played before but I kinda wanna learn so happy to be here
Does everyone have to use the website to make their character? The races seem so limited
dming soon again
does anyone have any good videos about spells that are understandable?
hate spells cause I have memory issues and it’s not as easy to remember as hitting someone with a stick
ping me if you reply
You need to buy the books to get more access
Yeah but do you have to? Will i not be able to join sessions if i dont have the same books?
You can use the free basic classes, or you can can ask a party member or your DM for it if they have it. So no, you don’t have to buy it.
It’s encouraged to share books
And you can share books on beyond
Okay! Thank you
When im making a human is there any stat changes i need to add
Using the current rules, and not legacy rules: No, no changes needed.
Yay
Indeed, as the stat changes are a part of background
What are your troubles with spells specifically?
Is there anyone here that could help me and my friend learn how to make a character over discord call?
what the different spells do, like every single spell for atleast 1st level
like uhhh bardic inspiration gives inspiration aka advntage to a temmate kind of thing
That's a tall order for yourself. You can just ask your players to read the text when they cast a spell so you know what it does.
o
Bardic inspiration does not do that, but that's a separate thing.
it’s 11.30 pm rn i have to go to bed cause I need to wake up in 5-6 hours so im off rn :,)
You can also create cheat sheets for yourself on your players' abilities once you know what classes they'll be playing.
Good night and good luck!
i see ty
Hello guys, I am brand new to the whole dnd community, I have wanted to play it for so long and have only just started to properly start looking and need tips/advice on character creation, how the game works, and what kinds of things work the best and basically anything else about the game
You don't quite have to memorize every spell, just give them a skim read so you can go "burning hands is a cone of fire" and so on. Outside of eventually using some to the point you naturally memorize the effects, you're going to be looking them up to read the description verbatim anyway, so don't feel bad about that at all
what?
Its an old saying, for when something fails to go back and try again
Yes... but you just dropped it into chat without really any context
Hello (*´∇`)ノ
Oh sorry I didn't mean for it that way.
Mornin folks
For my first real long term campaign, should I use 2024 rules or 2014 rules?
The 2024 updates are where D&D is going so if you want things to be future compatible with new book releases, I'd pick the 2024 updates.
Also this channel is for folks new to D&D to get help with learning core game rules and mechanics
We do have the #dm-discussion if you wish to discuss DM things with fellow DMs
I'd also note that anecdotally the 2024 updates with it's glossary are easier for new to D&D folks to learn and pick up then the 2014 materials
How can I choose a background for my character? I'm new here
Where can I join beginners games

For character creation, you can read the gifs two chapters of the free basic rules and use dnd beyond’s character builder.
For learning how to play, I recommend the Join the Party Podcast recording of their first session. It is an edited recording designed to teach newcomers the basics of dnd: https://www.jointhepartypod.com/listen/beginners-start-here-wedding-party-i
Thank you I will do that
Like in dnd beyond or in general?
Not sure if this is the place to ask, but I’m looking for other new players who want to figure out dnd together lol. Or is there a place to meet other players?
This is sorta the right place. Are you asking about being in voice chat together and figuring something out ?
This place usually has a buncha new players, yes, though it’s usually moreso answering questions. You’re welcome here tho.
#looking-for-community could maybe find you a group of newbies, but I don’t use that channel much so idk
i've noticed it is a ton of westmarches over any other kind of alternative
i dont know if it is allowed to link other discords, but there are "newbie" specific d&d servers too
Not something in specific, but just in general. Currently watching a ton of dnd videos trying to learning about everything. Kinda an invitation to anyone who’s looking to discuss dnd with
Thanks!
in general, I try to find a race that fits my character (it's a magical dog), but there's nothing that is close to a canine race
Have you looked at Shifter and/or Simic Hybrid?
Both of those can be canine-coded. When in doubt look for the mechanical feature set you think would fit and reflavor.
Of course since there are no direct “magical dog” species you’d have to get DM approval to play as one
okay, thank you!
How do i roll stats?
Roll 4d6, drop the lowest. Repeat 6 times, and allocate each number to any stat you want.
Stats are generated via one of 3 methods:
- Point Buy
- Standard Array
- Rolled
Assuming your DM uses rolled stats, you'll almost always roll under their supervision to prevent cheating. The official rolled method is to roll 4d6 and total the highest 3 dice for each stat
Those...are words...
See here for more info:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character#Step3DetermineAbilityScores
I dont have a DM, im just building a charecter rn for a future game
?tag new abilities
Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
Wait it’s called point cost and not point buy??
If you don’t have a DM yet I recommend using standard array or point buy
Ok thank you
Background is different from species.
From the free basic rules your options are
- Acolyte
- Criminal
- Sage
- Soldier
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-origins#BackgroundDescriptions
It was updated in the 2024 version from what I remember
Huh
Never knew
I dont understand point cost. What does it mean 14 costs 7?
Im sorry if i sound like an idiot lmao
Im like VERY new to this all lol
Hi like VERY new to this all lol, I’m Nugget
And basically, your stats start at 8. You have 27 points. You mean invest 1 point to increase a stat of your choice by one. If you wish to increase it to a number higher than 13, you have to use two points. You can only get up to 15 in one stat.
A score of 14 requires
8+1+1+1+1+1 (5 points)+1(2 points cuz it’s increasing to 14)
Words arent wording, but i think i understand..?
Okay wait i just did a very stupid comparison in my head
And i think i understand
The table here says how many points it costs to get a specific ability score https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character#AbilityScorePointCosts
For example, if you want your strength to be at 14, it's going to cost 7 points
If you want to set it to 15 it's going to cost 9 points
im going over dnd rules and see dodge action only real dnd experience i have is from baldurs gate and they didnt have dodge should i keep dodge in my upcoming campaign
It is a basic rule rather than an optional one, so I would keep it.
Baldur's Gate has a very wide net of creative liberties. It should not be taken as a one-for-one guide as to how everything works in DND proper, whether it's legacy or modern versions of the rules
Real dnd is more grueling
Lots of stuff in bg3 are automated or taken for granted for the sake of smoothness
There's also just things that are blatantly changed, like Thieves having two bonus actions
is there any like ai online dms that can dm for me and a friend? we want to do dnd together but don’t have anyone to dm with us
we’re trying out one right now but it kinda sucks
No, AI is very poor at DMing and for TTRPGS in general. If you wanted a DM I suggest looking for one using the instructions in #find-a-game
There are also many other ways to look for a DM. Here's an extensive and thorough guide by a fellow user (iamrazorwing) that details pretty much every way you can find a DM:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1rjwuod1lNBM5n4X_TH2ZoqTULv53jWaVMXtrzKVboms/edit?tab=t.0
hi guys, i know next to nothing about dnd but im really interested in playing! should i actively try to learn a bit more before trying to find a game or should i jump in pretty mush blind lol
I recommend getting familiar with the Basic Rules first, linked in this channel's pins as well as in #learn-to-play . You don't have to memorize everything, just being familiar and knowing where to look suffices most of the time. The better foundation you have the easier it is to get into a game.
I also recommend making a practice character as you read along. Feel free to ask any questions here along the way as well!
going through the dnd rule book and im a little confused on some things so savings throws are active when the player or monster is being attacked and works if they role less than your ac right
AI DM? Short answer, no.
Long answer, noooooooooooooo. "AI" is all artificial and no intelligence. LLMs are algorithms spitting out letters and trying to net engagement and agreement, it is a yes-man and will not provide sporting challenge, it will forget and hallucinate on the spot. They don't think, they mimic face value. They say things that could sound correct to a businessman but fall apart on any scrutiny.
D&D is a game of rules that runs on the engine of human brains, and machines are terrible at actually comprehending or adapating to things it can spiral into.
Saving Throws and Armor Class do not innately interact or call each other into play.
Saving Throws come into play most recognizably with effects such as a Fireball forcing a Dexterity saving throw, representing the efforts of the targets to dodge the worst of it, or many Poison sources forcing a Constitution saving throw, representing the victim's sheer constitution fighting off the worst effects.
Notably, they aren't... active.
A saving throw—also called a save—represents an attempt to evade or resist a threat, such as a fiery explosion, a blast of poisonous gas, or a spell trying to invade your mind. You don’t normally choose to make a save; you must make one because your character is at risk. A save’s result is detailed in the effect that caused it.
Attack Rolls are just a roll, almost always with some kind of bonus, which has to meet or beat the AC to hit the target. If it's a lower result than the AC, they miss.
An attack roll determines whether an attack hits a target. An attack roll hits if the roll equals or exceeds the target’s Armor Class.
Sometimes, a Saving Throw effect might be caused by an attack hitting in special cases, but that is a specific occurence and not the general rule.
sorry if my questions are silly so for spells would you do like a saving throw like imma use magic missile for example since it has a target would it just be a normal attack role compared to a fireball that targest a area instead
Otherwise, the only natural and often save from attacks hitting would be a spellcaster trying to maintain Concentration on a Concentration spell after taking damage.
You will always know when to use saving throws because specific spells ask for them
No, Magic Missile does what it says. It doesn't have you make an attack roll, so you don't. It doesn't have a target make a save to avoid it, so they can't. It just does what it does, which is doing damage.
this is basically unique to magic missile, by the way
But in general, the idea of individual targets often being attack rolls, and big areas often being saves, is generally more accurate than not.
But there are plenty of effects like making lots of attack rolls, or individual targets making saving throws, as well.
Either way, everything will state whether they do or do not have an attack roll or a saving throw involved.
sorry im very new so many things to learn
Hi guys im a new DM trying my best any tips on how i can manage my players and not make them bored ?
there's no reason to apologize whatsoever. Many concepts in the game can be confusing. They tend to get more clear the more you read and play because you get exposed to actual occasions where they are used. That makes them less abstract.
There are a lot of things to learn, no reason to apologies for being new.
To explain more generally:
Magic Missile
You create three glowing darts of magical force. Each dart strikes a creature of your choice that you can see within range. A dart deals 1d4 + 1 Force damage to its target. The darts all strike simultaneously, and you can direct them to hit one creature or several.
The spell does what it says, so it does this. Each dart strikes and deals damage to, the targets.
Compare that to Burning Hands
Each creature in a 15-foot Cone makes a Dexterity saving throw, taking 3d6 Fire damage on a failed save or half as much damage on a successful one.
Flammable objects in the Cone that aren’t being worn or carried start burning.
Burning Hands says creatures in a certain area make a save. You roll for the damage once for the effect that targets multiple creatures at the same time, so let's say you rolled 10 on your 3d6. A creature that fails takes 10 fire damage, a creature that succeeded takes 5 fire damage.
(and then objects are on fire but somewhat less relevant to the explanation)
me and my friends want to play dnd and im gonna be dm so im tryna learn the rules rn to try to give them the best game
It comes down to trying to dispose of preconceptions and figure out that things really do, for the most part, just do what they say they do.
I find it depends on the party, but try to have something happening. Players get bored when there’s nothing to do or they don’t see anything that shakes their interest.
Add suspicion, suspense, humour, joy, relief. Pretty much any emotional thing can help enhance a session.
thanks sometimes i just get anxious feeling that they dont enjoy playing and starts to silently blame myself XD
Happens to almost everyone, dw it’s very common
All you can do is listen to what the players are asking, and try your best
I was in that situation several years ago. I kept looking back to the text during the game. Don't try to memorize too much. Just focus on the fun of learning while reading and try to clarify things you don't understand (like what you're doing right now).
Except if they ask to level up
Only very slightly joking
Level them up when it makes sense for the party
ill take note of that thanks
yeah the two ways of doing advancement, for the most part, is Milestone, or XP
Milestone is "DM says level so level"
XP is "DM calculates XP from encounter, divides among party, party members gain that much XP, they level whenever their XP gets past certain level thresholds"
Also, it helps to use starter set adventures for the first game.
honestly i agree i feel like it would def give me less troubles but im super into the worldbuilding aspect and wanted to make my own world
I was the same when I began dnd. I will say tho, it can get messy
Building my own adventure for the first game would've been overwhelming for me but hey, if that's what excites you, go ahead 🙂 It will def require (much) longer prep time, though.
i agree so i havent gave my friends like a day to start rn im jsut prepping
ello
hello
How do you guys normally play? Online or in person
Online. I find it much more convenient
Fair enough, trying to match schedules is a nightmare when everyone has work or school . Or both in my case
Yeah, that's often the case.
Hi guys!! I just started dnd so I can definitely use some advice regarding the character sheet or mechanics, but what are some good suggestions for a backstory regarding a Druid soldier who is a tiefling?
They can be a member of the harpers
You can think about how does a lover of nature become a soldier. Or how does a soldier develops a knack for druidry. That seems like an interesting interplay.
Discriminated by society at large, this character joined the harpers and received their training inside
Jaheira the High Harper has the soldier background
If a dm has 8 gnoll and they role initiative the dm rolls 8 times for each gnoll right
Generally no. You would roll once for each type of monster and put them on the same initiative
Though DMs can split it further if they want to
So let’s say player 1 roles a 20 player 2 roles a 6 and player 3 roles a 4 and the gnolls role a 12 would the order be 1,gnolls,2,3
Sorry, yes. I read that wrong the first time
Oh no worries had me a little confused but ty for clarifying
For spells they do a fixed damage unless upcasted or if the enemies manage to do a save right
Most spells that do damage are not fixed. They deal the damage listed in their spell description which is usually X number of Y die size
Ah I see
Upcasting adds something extra sometimes, such as more damage (e.g. Fireball does 8d6 by default, it gets +1d6 per spell level above 3rd)
Saving is slightly separate. If a spell forces a saving throw it will say. The effect of failure and success is different. For some spells it may be half damage on a success, on others no damage, on others full damage but they avoid a seconddary effects, etc.
It goes highest to lowest, until the lowest initiative has gone and then the next round starts at the highest initiative again.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/rules-glossary#Initiative
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game#Initiative
Some damaging spells will use an attack roll instead (e.g. Firebolt)
In short, you will have to refer to each spell's description to determine damage and whether they include attack roll or saving throw
An example of this is with Burning Hands
Each creature in a 15-foot Cone makes a Dexterity saving throw, taking 3d6 Fire damage on a failed save or half as much damage on a successful one.
The caster rolls their 3d6 damage, so let's assume the average roll of 10.
Each target that fails their save takes 10 damage, each that succeeded takes 5 damage.
If they rolled 18 damage, that'd be 18 on a fail or 9 on a success. If they rolled 6, that'd be 6 on a fail, 3 on a success.
Yeah, it's as simple as "Each spell says what it does"
Evening I heard of this game before but didn't try to play until my son showed interest. A co-worker the last few weeks has been speaking to me a lot about this game and gots me very interested now.

I need some help making a character sheet, I think I have the basic gist of it there’s just some stuff I’m a bit confused about
What specifically are you struggling with?
like putting in the info for certain things like ability scores and other stuff like that, the sheet ain’t sheeting for me if you know what I mean
Idk I think I might’ve done some stuff wrong am getting paranoid
Are you using dnd beyond, a physical sheet or some other medium?

Btw here’s a character creation guide

Doing the 4d6 is pretty popular because it gives you slightly higher scores on average. Point buy is also pretty popular
Im gonna do that but thanks for the help!!
All three are fairly popular, and each have their perks
True
I personally don’t love rolled
I play with newer players, and doing rolled stats with them just feels like it’ll end messy
I personally adjust the standard array for my games to be 16, 14, 13, 12, 10, 9 so its closer to what you would get from 4d6
All my players prefer that standard array, it gives more freedom with feats for character building
So we get metamagic adept clerics and whatnot

I suggest making a practice character as you flip through, since it often aids the learning process. The more you learn the easier it is to get into a table as well!
Don't feel pressured to memorize everything, take it at your own pace and focus on what you want to do (e.g. no need to read every spell description, or every classes' mechanics if you don't plan on playing one)
Also feel free to ask any specific questions you have here, we’re always happy to help! :)

My checklist for what you should know minimum to smoothly start a game is how to make a character, basic ability checks, modifiers, core gameplay, classes and combat.

Hello! I'm new here and started playing DnD around mid-2025. Currently playing as Soul Knife level 6 😁
Hi I am new too just downloaded this a day ago built a character but don't know what I am doing
Any tips for a new dm?
Ive been apart of the dnd community since 2022 though Ive been inactive
So far only played 1 oneshot and 3 campaign sessions before it was canceled
And dmed one twoshot
I plan on making a few oneshots with 2 close friends in december break
My plan is to have a basic introduction to something, 1 "conclusion' to be moving towards, 1-3 enemy encounters, atleast 1 puzzle and atleast 1 npc interaction (non enemy)
Idk if that sounds good
By conclusion I mean like, a plan for how its ending, as in figuring out a mystery
Tips can be anything helpful
How to keep track of things
How to make things fun
How to help/push players towards the goal when they seduce a candle
And so on
This plan works! You're on a good path.
Keep the clock ticking.
Give your party a sense of urgency. Time pressure usually works. Complete the quest before an event happens, or the longer you take the harder it gets.
It's okay to nudge them.
Sometimes your players have exhausted all the options in a scene or are talking in circles about a plan. Let them have their time to play, but don't be afraid to ask them, "are you going to check out the hermit's hut or investigate the well next?"
Ask them what they want.
Sometimes they come up with schemes or ideas that don't seem to make sense. Ask what they're after, work with them if it's a thing that could happen or tell them otherwise.
hi all , i'm new to D&D i just created a character on D&D beyond but idk what should i do next , the game having lots of rules but i read some of it so i want to join one shot to see if i understood it well
Hi new to D&D, I’m Nugget
I recommend checking out #find-a-game
hi guys, is stats system determined by a dm? or is it up to the players on how it is used?
The stat array is decided by the dm (standard, randomized, etc)
But how players assign their stats is up to the player
ohh thx

The 3 default methods are Point Buy / Standard Array (or PB/SA), and Rolled.
Typically a DM would want to see the roll happen if you use rolled.
However some DMs may alter the rules slightly. So always consider that possibility
If in doubt, use the Standard Array. Where you assign your high and low numbers is more important than what those numbers are.
Stats in general are a bit monotone to build cuz they mostly follow one formula for most classes for reference
so if i have no game, keep the stats empty right?
Highest number goes to how the character attacks, followed by constitution
You can still build a character prior to a game
i should always ask the dm first right?
Yes
You can build something first as a test run, can always change the stats later
ohh ok tysm
The different ways of generating stats result in more or less the same numbers
Your most important stat will always be 15-18 no matter how its generated
guys what do I do if my players are drifting away from the main quest line. How do I get them back on track
Sounds like a #dm-discussion question
But also it never hurts to pause the game and discuss expectations out of character

with skills do you need to write down something for all of them or only the ones you have proficiency? a bit silly to ask but honestly i have no clue 💔
Hello
"Hey I need you to focus on the main story line here. I'm glad you're enjoying the other elements of the story but please find a reason for your character to stay engaged and focused on the main plot."
We need to write the modifier of the skill and add the proficiency bonus to the ones we're proficient in
All skills. For skills you’re proficient in, you just add the proficiency modifier
This helps alot thanks
For the rest, the ability modifier that relates to the skill

guys do we need a grid for combat
how can we do it without a grid and if we need a grid please send a grid pdf
It’s usually preferred, though I don’t have a pdf
Any square grid could suffice. Most Virtual Tabletops (VTTs) have some form of map/grid integration. If you're running the game in person you could use anything from graph paper to whiteboards
So how does it work because I read guide and all but how will I play and find a story etc
You gotta find a game. Either online, or in person.
Then, the DM will put yall (the party) into a world, and you go from there
In person it won't be possible in my country I think maybe online it could work

Thank you this was actually new advice i appreciate it❤️
Has anyone ever participated in a D&D therapy session for anxiety? Know of any groups that get together for it?
Probably best to work with a medical professional to identify such a resource. Per server rules we can’t provide suggestions or information about such treatments.
If you're trying to make a post in #looking-for-dm, the instructions are in #find-a-game.
Step 1. Go to any channel where you can type.
Step 2. Type /looking.
Step 3. Highlight the channel you want to post in.
Step 4. Hit Enter.
Step 5. Fill out the form you're directed to.
Step 6. Hit Enter.
If it doesn't work, you may need to enable embeds and/or reinstall your Discord client.
There are tons of tips on the server if you search dm tips and/or dm advice. For your specific questions:
You can keep track of things by making notes that are easy to skim, with bullet points, headers, colored highlights, bolding, larger font, whatever means will make it easy to find info at a glance. You'll develop your own style, of course, but you can find examples of DM prep notes online via Google. Cheat sheets also help if you know there are aspects about the game you tend to forget.
I'll ditto what Mr Smith said about how to make things fun by asking your players what they find fun. Some enjoy combat and rolling dice. Others love meeting random NPCs. Still others like that feeling of progression. If they don't know yet what kind of thing they like in the game, throw different things at them and see what sticks. When they engage repeatedly with an element, that's a good tell that they're probably enjoying it.
Two ways to push players toward the goal is, as UndyingNoob said, to talk to them above table. "Guys, I'm a player too, and I have prepped some cool stuff I'd love to get to. If we could stay on track with this part, I'll try to build in time to just faff around." Or whatever way you want to approach it. The other is to have the plot come to them. They haven't dealt with that faction yet? Now that town has been overtaken, so the party needs to free it if they want to get supplies and more info about the surrounding area.
Hello, I'm much very new to dnd, my therapist got me into it but I haven't played at all yet and I'm willing to, but I wish to understand most of it before I look into my first game. I've gotten the app and Ive been reading it, but I havent understood properly some of the abreviations and whatnot.
Questions: what does (num)d(num) mean, are hit points damage that your character deals,
The first number is the amount of dice, the second is how many sides the dice have.
For example, 1d20 means roll 1 20-sided dice
And hit points is your health.
Oh crap, so you need to role 7 dice for my char
Why?
What do you need to roll 7 dice for
I thinkl it's bc its lvl 7
That’s not how hit dice work
oh
You have 7 uses of your hit dice. You should read the rules for short and long rests.
what app do you use?
hey yall!
Welcome!
Hello all
By app I assume you mean D&DBeyond? The free Basic Rules can be found there, though it's a bit easier to read on a computer. The Basic Rules are linked in this channel's pins as well as in #learn-to-play
Otherwise, here:

Hey I’m still fairly new to D&D and I had a question and it’s a bit silly. Sorry to through in a complaint, but I’m currently trying to do a blue dragonborn build and make him Lawful neutral and had a village the same sort of type, but was told by a DM that a blue dragon isn’t typically a Lawful neutral and having both a village of lawful neutral and my own character being it was a bit much.
My question is how badly does this affect a DM. If I had a character and village that didn’t align with the traditional narrative of that species, does it add more work to the DM to basically help my character develop? I really wanna play and only have ever played 1 session (Really bad) and want to keep trying to get a better experience without making it hard for anyone else to have to accommodate for me.
There's 2 parts of this that I think are important to address:
-
Dragonborn are not the same as Dragons. The former can have any alignment, the latter are predominantly one alignment (as determined by their color/type). In fact in most official settings the two only share name and appearance (e.g. in the Forgotten Realms their origin as a species has multiple theories). It would be like treating Elves the same as the Fey or Goliaths the same as Giants.
-
Sometimes you have a great character idea that doesn't fit the DM's setting or makes it difficult to integrate into their setting. It can suck but consider it an opportunity to better mold your character to the DM's world and tweak your character around a little bit.
Sorry I didn’t mean for it to sound like Dragons. I thought I had put Dragonborn. There are no Blue dragons, just Dragonborn.
Also thank you for the advice! A friend said to leave but I thought that would just make me look childish and like if I didn’t get my way, I’d have a temper tantrum. I really just want to be a Blue Dragonborn but I am not picky lol
So, I think the first thing to say here is that the idea that alignment is tied to a dragon's scale color is typically reserved for actual dragons. Dragonborns don't follow that same restriction, especially player characters. They may have some complicated feelings about the fact that their scales are the same color as those of an evil dragon, but that won't necessarily affect their own morality. This is what Star was talking about with their first point
Hello!!! First time dungeons and dragoner here. I’ve been watching YouTube videos and shorts of Dungeons and Dragons, played DnD online, and I’ve even made a character named Llewellyn. Do any of you know anywhere I can play with people online?
But that being said, its also part of the social contract of the game that the DM gets to establish their own setting and the rules and culture of the world. If blue dragonborns being evil aligned is part of the lore for their setting, then you should accept that as being the norm. Its still ok for your character to go against that norm, if you want to be lawful neutral, then you should work with your DM to craft a story for your character that fits their world. Maybe you went against the culture of your village, or maybe you were raised by dragonborns of a different scale color, or a different species altogether
Thank you @wheat crystal and @fallen surge for helping me understand a bit. The last thing I want to add more difficulty to the DM for something as small as what label they have. I just wanna try DND besides Baldurs Gate really

People find different things fun, so talk to your players prior to playing to learn what they want out of the game and to communicate what you want as well. D&D can allow for excitement and drama and the wonder of what happens next; it can also create space for character growth and forging bonds. Those aren't mutually exclusive, of course, but if you know the kind of dish your players want, that puts you in a better place to prepare it!
Hello I’m a newbie
hello, how do you do?

tysm! I told them beforehand it would most likely be roleplay heavy cuz i suck at combat, and they were like "yippeee" so yuh
I'll probably ask them a few questions
also I'm terrified of being too strict or too shallow or whatever, like limiting what their character can be. When running oneshots, or twoshots, even campaigns, it can be hard to start it all off when they just make a random character.
Usually I say which races will work (some parts of most my worlds don't like certain races or consist of only a few races) and kind of like- how it will start, so I write like a 500 word introduction as an example
"A missing poster hangs on the local town board, many ignore it as the town consists of folk who've never ventured far from the known grounds, fearing the dense forest that begins not so far from the towns borders."
and then adding like: your character needs to have a motivation to want to do this, it could be money, a desire to explore or maybe even fame. You need to start with some gear in your bag and a reputation amongst the townsfolk.
something like that, to guide them and help them create a character from that, since my friends are also newbies
but I'm still scared of being too strict
or limiting
It's absolutely fine to impose limits, either because of the scenario, the setting, or just because there's something you don't like. Players don't have to play; they get to. If they don't like your approach, there are so many others out there.
And I do think "make a character who wants to go on the adventure presented" is such a good limitation because not everyone finds it fun to convince someone's character to play the dang game!
@blazing star we only allow group formation/solicitation in our looking for channels. Instructions on how to use them are here: #find-a-game
Sorry, thought I did, looks like I auto jumped,
thank you :D I try to nudge them rather than say be this
Hey everyone, I’m getting back into DnD and looking to get the 2024 editions of the players handbook, monster manual, and dm’s guide. i have the 5e ones (i understand that these are becoming obsolete now?) so i’m looking to ‘upgrade’ as it were. Are there any retailers that sell them for less than $50 each?
Not obsolete - they are the same edition just the 2024 updates are where D&D is going
Amazon often has deals but outside of sales on DnDBeyond, Amazon, or other resellers I don't know of any that sell consistently under Manufacturer Suggested Retail Price.
I want to get that dm board that blocks you from the players I’m gonna be a new player but also a dm so which would you guys recommend
i think the official wotc dm screen is good, tho i don't play in person. you can use three ring binders and just set them up like a dm screen
With the campaign im making ive planned for 3 islands
The first island is fully planned ish
Hello
Welcome!
Thank you!
Any questions thus far?
It's all in the rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character
You have three methods for generating stats, but you should use Standard Array if you're creating a character without being in a group yet.
Is the map at the end of Dungeon Master guide 2024 removable? Or should it stay within the book? It has a very thin glue line which has me doubting if it should stay in or not
Was goody
Could I get some help understanding DnD? My buddies and I are planning to do our first campaign this upcoming friday, and none of us have really played

LIkely because it did not meet server rules requirements (using non-standard characters/fonts/inappropriate language, etc.)
But also not a topic for this channel. If you need clarification on server rules, please check #rules or go to #moderator-support and ask to speak with a moderator.

How do I find a group to play with in the server
Okay how do I go and do it as I dont understand it
That channel has instructions for commands to use if you want to make your own post, especially as a DM, otherwise check out #looking-for-players if you're a player looking to join a game, and you find bunch of threads by DMs looking for players
Looking to play as a player so how would i

Hi I'm new and I can't quite figure out how to join a community
If you're talking about the #looking-for-community posts I would expect them to have an invite link or instructions
I tried typing that in and nothing happened, that I noticed anyway
You don't type in that channel to join. You need to read and click on the posts
If you're trying to make your own looking post, follow the instructions from #find-a-game in any channel you can type in
I'm confused 😅
its a thread, people make a post and you can click into it
Are you trying to make your own post or read the existing ones?
Read them
Do you see the posts in #looking-for-community if you go to that channel?
You can also look into playing D&D adventurers league.
The server has several channels dedicated to it like #adventurers-league and #1050206572535623690 will list places that host AL games like this post form 3 days ago that lists their upcoming games. #1050208806006702081 message
Hi, new here in dnd. I started with Fate SRD to TTRPGs, willing to try out DnD for a try. I am a solo player, so my experience will be different.
Well, D&D isn't exactly a solo game. Normally you'd have a DM and 3 to 5 players.
I have done experience with Fate SRD solo and I heard there's a niche trend in Solo DnD, willing to get started but I don't know how.
The closest you're going to get is from independent publishers like Obvious Mimic .
But as otherworldly mentioned D&D is designed for group play and at the bare minimum you need a DM
The game is not designed to be played solo at all. So yeah, niche third party stuff, maybe an adventure or two is probably the most you're gonna get without making it up yourself
What are the third party stuffs?
#third-party is the channel is the place you'll want to ask.

As for learning D&D in general, the free basic rules is where you would start.
Content not published by WotC
But yea specifics are in #third-party
New to DnD just made my first Character and want to start a campaign on dnd beyond can i get an invite plz
Head on over to #find-a-game for the info on how to get started - asking/advertising for games outside of the dedicated channels is going to be seen as off topic by the mods
Hi, im running a dnd campign or wanting to atleast but im finding a hard time to make like this map of a city, but idk the best way to do this. Any advice?
#dnd-maps would be the best place to ask
oh thanks 🙂
I only see join campaign, im using my cell at the moment
What?
That doesn't even show up in the channel. Where are you looking?
I have a question. For minor illusions. It need s, and m . (Bit of Fleece) according to the website. After using it does it consume the fleece? Or do I just need to have it present?
It doesn't say it consumes the fleece. If a spell consumes its component it will say so.
Either way, you either need the Fleece present, or a Component Pouch, or a focus some feature says you can use (such as your spellcasting feature on most spellcasting classes)
As a Wizard, you can use an arcane focus, or even just your spellbook!
Oh figured it out thx
I feel stupid for not noticing that.. I’ll see if I can gently get it out
Random question
What happens to spellcasters if they don't have access to their focus
Unless they otherwise have the required material components, they would not be able to cast spells that require them.
Yeah, spells with just Verbal and/or Somatic components are unaffected
Interesting, thank you both
might be a dumb question, i know theres a channel and whatnot… but is it difficult to find a game here for complete beginners? like ive only watched videos to understand the game
No there should be a few, im currently setting up a campaign for lost mines of phandelver which is considered a very beginner friendly campaign
In general you want to look for early level campaigns (1 to 4), which help you just get introduced to basic mechanics
oooo sounds interesting, thank you for letting me know !
I’d also recommend you look at one shots. I’d recommend at #1050206572535623690 , specifically Al events.
thank you!

I have a question about how to dm
I'm thinking of starting a small campaign or a one shot with my friends but I don't know how to start the planning
Any tips would be helpful
Come up with an idea for an adventure. You'll need a location, situation, opposition and a complication.
Check out the Five Room Dungeon method and Sly Flourish's guides.
Three adventures connected together can be a whole campaign, or the first chapter of a larger story that still provides a start, middle and end.
So guys I’m new to dnd can someone give me an idea on how to play it
Like how to roll a 20 and when ?
hey, check out the basic rules. the first few chapters are a great introduction. https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
Ok thx and I’ve made my character in dnd beyond and it’s lvl 2 is that okay to the server because most of the servers I’ve entered are specific with levels?
Depends on the campaign but a fair amount start at level 1
well games are not hosted here directly, People just advertise them.
the starting level is determined by the group/DM
Another good thing about starting at level 1 is that you can easily adjust accordingly should a campaign require a higher starting level
So can I change my level without making a new character?
Sure. Or work on a copy.
Yes just adjust it, but some of the stuff exclusive to higher levels may be gone
you can plan out the things a character might take at higher levels if you like, but especially as a beginner I would assume starting at level 1
No worries at all
Thx guys for the help 🙏

Definitely not
no people just want to help new folks
Wizards of the Coast, the company that owns and publishes Dungeons and Dragons, owns the server.
what exactly is homebrew?
Homebrew is unofficial content that's created by the DM, rather than content from an officially published book or source
Think of it like a mod for a video game.
As the name implies, you can go to a store to buy wine
Or, make it yourself at home
thank you
so given i played 20 years ago (long time ago) i think might have been 3rd edition, i reached out to a couple of friends that are DM's (occasionally) and they swear by 2014 rules over 2024, but I hear 2024 is easier for beginners, is it really "that different" between the versions? eventually i will probably have to learn both but just curious how much of it is the same
i may have asked a hard question 😄 sorry
The two rulesets are 90% the same. Most of the changes from the outdated 2014 ruleset to the current 2024 ruleset do the following:
- Make wording more straightforward
- Give players more options and customization
- Increase the power levels of various subclasses and classes that were previously underwhelming
- Decrease the capability of players to deal comical amounts of 'burst' or 'nuke' damage in one turn
Certainly if you are new or newsih to DMing, I can tell you the 2024 DMG is much better at the job of educating.
The party line is 5.5 or 2024 is "the future of the game" but in my view, I feel free to integrate both 2014 and 2024; take what I like from both, discard what I don't (speaking as a DM). Plenty of things I really like about the 2024 update, plenty of things I don't. Same with 2014.
thanks both, so seems like i could probably learn 2024 np and then go back to 2014 if i want, but what I will find is a few things are named different, few nerfs or boosts, doesnt sound too bad then, i was worried it would be drastically different
I would like to DM eventually but It was suggested that i learn the rules and play as a player first so was just curious as to which version to start with 🙂
I'd say if you were in the market for some new rulebooks, you may as well start with 2024, absorb that, then maybe pick up a used (or new) copy of the 2014 set, then contrast/compare.
Your experience at any invididual table will vary. Some DMs will run pure 2014, others 2024, others some mix of the two. But as noted, the differences between them are not sufficient to rise to the level of a new, 6th Edition.
Thanks, ill look at 2024 then 🙂 it will just be my luck i will finally learn enough to DM and a 6th edition then comes out haha
We've had 10 years to chew on 2014, so you'll likely have quite a few years as a buffer.
I think I made my character. How do I share it?
On the D&D Beyond site? Hit manage character, set it to public visibility, and get the sharing link. #character-discussion would love to hear what you've come up with.
I think I did it

Leaning away form AI is always healthy. The links above are a good start to learning!
Unfortunately I'm very hands on and hafe to be in the moment in order to learn how to play properly I'll read or listen to a explanation and the buffering loading pops up in my head 😭
Try having a read through the first couple of sections of the Free Rules to get a grasp of the terminology, then have a go at putting a character together for practice.
The key things to pick are your class, species and background.
I've walked someone on this server through their first character sheet before. And many more times while introducing my own friends to the game. I'd be happy to help you out, but it's a busy day so I will likely become occupied here and there. But we don't have to do it all at once.
You can certainly try to find a game where a DM is willing to teach you as you go, but I think that's not going to be very likely.
It's considered common courtesy in DnD to not make the DM, who is already preparing and running an entire game for you and several other people, have to teach you how to play the game as well, especially when you could have read up on the rules beforehand.
Unfortunately, DnD requires reading.
id be willing to do one shots (2 hour sessions max) for a very small party to teach them the game, but that hardly feels complete tbh
and you do spend more time teaching than actually playing...
That be nice and also I'm very grateful and we could talk another time when ever available.
Also brb thanks living dinner is now lol
Some DMs are absolutely willing to teach as you play, but that's something to discuss with the DM ahead of time.
Feel free to DM (message) whenever you wanna get started. I'll get back to you when I can.
hello newbie here
I just dm’d and feel like it was a boring, unplanned, disappointing flop of a campaign. Any suggestions?

i am a dm newcomer, so i thought this channel would be appropriate.
It kinda is, but DMing is a somewhat specialist role, yes?
perhaps
Sorry for the confusion. This channel is mostly here to ask about the basics of how the game is played, rather than the best ways to make your game fun as a DM
alright…
Oof
When folk are directed to channels it's not a rebuke. It's just a big server with a lot of people, and using the right channels helps keep discussions on-topic, focused and constructive.
I'm back and fullllll ughhhhhhh belly hurt tho ate to much
I’d recommend playing adventures league then. It ran rules as written, so no homebrew. That way you learn as you play.
Does anyone have a campaign for under 18
You’ll want to visit your school , public library, and game shop as they’ll be the places that will likely have youth dnd programs.
I meant in this server
have you looked in #looking-for-players ? people make posts there every day with different group requirements
Thank you Jayn
Yea but the only one that fit me are unsure if they want a underage player
Cus theyre like 29 25 27
So ig im just gonna have to wait
finding groups that fit schedules/requirements is honestly one of the longest parts.. but when you find the table that works it makes the wait so worth it
Reach out to your local youth dnd programs. Some offer both in person and online play.
provided that im not artistic enough and dont have enough materials to create proper tabletops and models, what virtual tabletops do you use to give a players a visual of your world
I'd go with owlbear rodeo and use publicly available maps from the talented community.
I use Roll20 personally, there are others, Foundry, Owlbear Rodeo, D&D Beyond, some even use Theatre of the Mind, with the visuals in your head

Anyone willing to look over a character sheet for my first character? It’s a warforged fighter and would love someone to
- Make sure I built him right
- Give me some advice on how to build him even better?
As of right now he’s based around weapon master cause I’ve fallen in love with that style, but I’m open to change
The folks over in #character-discussion can look over your sheet.

Hey, I'm not really new but I am somewhat. (At least newer to DM'ing) I am wondering how to make maps and the different ways. Just so I can make the experience fun for my players!
There's a couple of websites that folks frequently use to design maps themselves. I'm partial to Inkarnate myself, but I've also used Dungeonfog in the past.
I believe Dungeonscrawl is another free one
Okay, I'll probably try those out. Thanks!
ey do you recon someone that has played the game for a while could talk to me in a call about the game im realy new like watched videos for like 2 years and want to play/dm my first campaighn
The sever doesn’t have any voice channels and I’m unable to hop on a call at the moment. But I’d be happy to answer some questions for you.

So I've made a character with D&D Beyond. Been scouring to find a group but nothing really around my time zone (Australia) that I can find. Anyone got any tips outside of "make a looking-for-dm post"
@harsh fjord (sorry for the ping!) has a really good LFG resource in their bio that I would recommend 🙂
Focus on matching availability over time zone. If it’s morning for one player and evening for another, it’s fine as long both are available to play.
Also here is I am razorwings google doc on tips for finding a group https://docs.google.com/document/d/1rjwuod1lNBM5n4X_TH2ZoqTULv53jWaVMXtrzKVboms/edit?usp=drivesdk
Yeah I skimmed that. No WotC in my area. (Sunshine Coast, QLD) followed the other tips and advice. Just reaching out and asking everywhere I can to not "wait and be picked"
HAI
