Otherwise, take learning the game at your own pace and have fun! And ask questions.
Oh I will have questions, and a bunch
What class?
thats good!
Artificer
Original job was blacksmith
don’t know what race tho*
the least artificer backstory ever (jk jk dont listen to me)
WHAT
I DID NOT DO THAT
I can’t believe you just did that
f you
(I have no idea what you did)
the text was large for like .5 second
Fixed
Any race works really, your species doesn’t matter as much in the 2024 rules
Pick whatever you think is cool
That works
I’ll allow it
What’s with you this past week?
my sarcasm arc has started
Btw Bob heads up Artificers aren’t in the Free Rules so your character will be a tad difficult to make on dnd beyond if you’re using that
The short version is act at the table, even while playing a character, as someone everyone else wants around. That doesn't mean you need to be a doormat; it means if you want to provide friction in the game, make that clear and get everyone else's green light.
I have some hopefully helpful bullet points [here](#dnd-newcomers message) and [here](#dnd-newcomers message).
Noticed
Might change to wizard then
I actually got a MC skin for it HOLD ON
Nevermind it’s not finished
Gonna do that tomorrow morning, for now, gn chat

So, homebrew is just stuff made by players and not the official dnd company?
Correct - supplemental rules/modifications/things made by the community and not from official D&D publications.
We generally suggest new to D&D folks avoid adding homebrew to their games right off the bat so they can learn how the core game runs and better understand the balance of things.
But if you're looking to discuss homebrew we have a channel specifically dedicated to it: #homebrew
Hi everyone
Welcome to the official D&D server!
Thank you I am new to all this
If you're looking to get started with D&D we have #learn-to-play and the free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
Feel free to ask questions here as you run into them
I just downloaded the d and d beyond app
Nice! DnDBeyond does make it pretty easy to get a character sheet set up.
Chapter 1 of the free basic rules goes over the core game mechanics and flow of play
Chapter 2 covers how to create a character
Ok
My name of my creator i made is Tarin the Spearbreaker
A Level 1 Human
Barbarian
Still trying to set my caractor up and stuff
Hello everyone
Hi
Hey guys, if you play online which website did you guys use for the visuals?
Do you mean for character design?
No, the board and stuff
I’d say the most popular for character sheets is D&D Beyond. For maps Roll20. But many use others like owlbear I think it’s called
And a few others but since I hate used roll 20 for like 8 years now it’s the only one I know lol
it mostly comes down to if you want 2d or 3d for which programs
I like Owlbear Rodeo.
https://www.owlbear.rodeo/
Okay, so if someone about to play, does they use multiple website at once or what?
do you mean like to play? Or
Most dnd board game things
Like roll 20
Have pages for the players character sheets n ect
So they wouldn’t need multiple tabs open to play (unless they kept their notes separate)
But yes many will use two programs so two tabs open at a minimum
Well, the player's handbook aren't free, that's why I wonder if using multiple websites are necessary
the key word would be "sometimes"
Some players have physical while others might not ect, so it’s really comes down to if the players have it or not
That's the thing, I don't have it. So I'm trying to be able to play with minimum cost
USD is far much stronger than IDR
I am struggling to set up my creator any advice
Character creation?
Go to find a game
Dnd beyond allows sharing if someone "owns" it in the group.
N nothing is stopping a dm sharing stuff with players in the group
How do I share it
What platform are you using to make your character?
Does Beyond have a board map?
It has Maps, which is their native Virtual Tabletop (VTT)
Ideally the DM should be providing access to whatever VTT the group will be using, if any.
I have my share link
Most commonly for something completely free in my experience a group will use Roll20 for the VTT and then either use Roll20's sheet maker or use D&DBeyond with a 3rd party plugin to transfer information
Feel free to post it here or in #character-discussion
I'm using Beyond for creating character
DnDBeyond is the official D&D digital toolkit and services. It’s not required to play D&D but many folks use it.

I just joined my friends party and went here to learn how to play
I'm a 100% newbie 😭
Check out the post a few messages up for great info
how does the sheets work exactly 😭
are you asking about the character sheet?
yes
Are you building it via pen and paper, or are you using dnd beyond creator?
DND beyond creator
okay so, where are you in the process of making your character?
lol okay
I found it but I don't understand it if that makes sense
I get you. okay so starting at the top of the page, youll see your abiltiy scores and ability modifiers
modifiers add bonuses to specific rolls your dm will ask you to make. luckily for you, the dnd beyond automatically added those bonuses for you to the appropriate places
for instance, the small box under those attributes shows your Saves. if the DM asks you to make a strength saving throw. you will roll a D20 and add that little number next to your STR save score.
making senses so far?
OMG THAT DOES MAKE SENSE
great! so the passive's box. those are things your DM will be more worried about than you. those numbers are how you passively pick up on perseption, investigation and insight
the box under that shows all the things you are proficent with like armor, weapons, tools and languages that you know. being proficient means you know how to do something
next, skills. the skills that have a filled in circle on that list are skills you are trained in, aka proficient with. this means you're better at doing that particular skill and get a special bonus to. this special bonus called a proficiency bonus increases slightly as you level up
to use a skill. the dm for instance will ask you to make a survival check. you roll a d20 and add that number next to it that you have
following?
nothing wrong with being new to something
your intitiative wil help you know where you get to act in combat. If a dm asks you to roll initiatve, can you guess what youll need to roll and add?
role a d20?
yep! and tehn add your initiative bonus. youll tell your Dm and they will let you know where you get to act. teh better the initiative roll the sooner you're character, otehr charaters or enemies will take there turns
Hello! I am also new here! im happy to see that the people here are so nice
Hello! I'm new to D7D
Armor Class, is how hard you are to hit. tables tend to run this a little different usually if they roll lower to attack you than your AC, then they miss you and the attack doesnt land.
Some dms do the rule of if it meets it beats, meaning if they roll exactly your AC they still hit you, other dms will play it as they have to roll 1 higher or more to hit you.
AC is actions??
AC is Armor Class
A quick question if possible, do people really use dnd beyond for their character sheets?
ahh thanks for clarifying
a lot of people do. i personaly love using it since i dont have to deal with carting around paper and folders with me on game night
DDB is one of the most popular ways to host sheets he’s
Meet or beat is the actual rule, just FYI
So that's what I would expect most DMs to do
i just have seen tables play it differently, its why i mentioned it
This also only true if the enemies attack you using an offensive action that uses an attack roll
Hmm then could anyone check out my first character sheet to see if anythings wrong with it? if not then its totally okay
Enemies may use other features that attack your character that involve your character’s Saving Throws (e.g. if an Enemy casts fireball)
This is the newbie learning channel so we really only deal with rules as written here.
Feel free to post it here or in #character-discussion !
Much appreciated
the last big section i havent covered is the large central box on the sheet. where it says actions, spells, inventory, features & traits, background, notes and extras. each of those as a lot of info it it that i think youll have to explore yourself and read the things there to figure out. way to much for me to write out lol
if you had any particular questions about a spot in it ill answer to my best for ya
what would I need in the inventory
Your starting inventory is given by your class and background
inventory is gonna be all of your equipment you picked out
the little red boxes make no sense to me. is the red boxes meaning ticked or not
If you’re using 2024 rules you can also get 1 trinket from the trinket table
if you click the manage inventory button, you can add more items that way as you pick them up
so those boxes tell you if a weapon, armor or particular item is equiped
if you toggle the box to fill it in, that means its currently equipped and you can use it
OHHH!
for instance, if you equip your weapon, it will show up as an option in your actions as an attack
Im glad you're feeling more confident
I would suggest making a second character that you arent worried about accidentally messing up then playing with it, clicking things and testing what they do so you get more comfortable with it
yeah that's what I was planning on doing thank you:))
You're very welcome Hartley!
Feel free to share your sheet here or in #character-discussion if you want it checked out by someone to make sure. Always good to peer review 😅
If you're struggling with what some of the terms mean, maybe peek at this link which is the glossary of terms. https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/rules-glossary#GlossaryConventions
Reading that section of the rules will really help you feel comfortable with what 'everything means'
okay okay thank youuu

How does combat work? Because from what I’ve heard it’s one of the more complicated things in dnd
It goes over the order of combat, actions taken and other important pieces. You will need a general understanding of some terms so you should read https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game#PlayingtheGame first
What specifically are you needing help understanding?
If you're talking about the entire thing as a whole, I recommend taking a more thorough perusal of "playing the game: combat" in the basic rules like Lunarith just suggested.
If you can point out specifics it'll be much easier to explain and analogize
I don’t know how to explain it but like the first basic attack that requires two 6 sided dice
I believe that is a Greatsword?
Yes that’s it
So when you attack with your greatsword, and you manage to land a hit, it'll deal damage equal to 2d6 + your Strength modifier.
(this is assuming no funky business with changing what ability is used for the attack, assuming the default which is Strength for a Melee Weapon)
Ok ok, while I’m here can you explain what an attack of opportunity is?
Idk if this is the right chat but can someone tell me how to play and how to join a online group to play?
An Opportunity Attack is simple
When an enemy you can see moves out of your reach by using its movement or any kind of action, and there's nothing saying it doesn't provoke an opportunity attack, then it provokes one. You spend your Reaction to take the Opportunity Attack reaction, making one attack against them before they leave.
Ok got it thanks
also, that greatsword isn't quite a 'first basic attack' - it's just the first attack you (seem to) have, other than an Unarmed Strike.
Gotcha
Need any help understanding anything else for combat?
I'll also detail: Once you take your Reaction, it is spent until the start of your next turn. You get one per "round around your turn"
I think I understand the other stuff like rolling to see who’s turn his first and stuff like that but thanks for the detail
Feel free to ask for any clarification
Hey. I'm new, as in I just joined less than a week ago. Does anyone know where I can go or who to talk to to set up/join a samurai-esque dnd game? I have no idea where to look...😵💫
Set up? Anywhere people play.
Join? That's a rare and specific wish in DnD.
I don't think I've seen any like that. I looked as well; my profile might give that fancy away.
I Joined today. the idea of playing D&D got me anxious
Using this server? Check out the instructions in #find-a-game !
How does one add a subclass
One gets to level 3
Thank you good sir
No problems, good melon
What's the prep needed to be a dm
PSTDs in Homebrew DMing
unless you have a module... everything
What's a module? Like a premade campaign/oneshot?
yes
a scripted adventure made and sold by Wizards of the Coast
Alrighty
Anything else?
Overall setting, possible scenarios, important characters, a list of names and a bottle of your favourite beverage
“Overall setting” can also include descriptions, basic geography of the area and some weather
not just by wotc, but yeah
"apple juice" is always a great option to deal with the splitting headaches you get from having to deal with the players trying to seduce the 30 foot tall nightwalker
Can anyone help me make a DND character 😅
what sort of archetype are you planning on doing?
do you wanna fell like a powerhouse going through enemies? like a flashy, quick on their feet attacker? a helpful stone that the team falls back on time and time again?
Idk the basics ik I want it a tiefling warlock with pact of the blade with the haunted one background chaotic neutral
amazing start, a good build with pact of the blade if you're trying to maximize damage would be to use Hexblade, but it is overplayed a bit
Ya idk how to set it up
another good idea is to multiclass into a martial to get access to heavy/medium armor and stuff like that
I think pure hexblades are fine.
Well, it depends on which version of the rules, '14 or '24.
'24 has Pact of the Blade give the ability to use Charisma for the weapon, basekit now.
they are really fun, i've played 2 already though so im probably just biased
I know the cantrips I wanted is minor illusion and mage hand.
And then known spells as charm person and hex
I wanted to have strong charisma and I forgot what else was made for magic
what level are you starting at?
No eldritch blast? Daring.
Shall we assume it’s 2024 rules or 2014
Idk 😅
ah okay
The idea I have for character sheets is pre-made character sheets that I got when I bought a dragons of stormwreck isle from Walmart lol
oh okay
Ya I've literally never played or made anything.
Well, if you've seen the premade sheets, you can see that the character creation can end up as that
I don't understand how the sheet works I don't know how stats affect things
Well for the most part
Well, the first step is reading through the basic rules

Gotta learn the rules before you start playing
I understand the rules and how to play it's just the actual doing that's the problem lol
And I can't find a blank character sheet cuz idk which one is right
Here's the official blank sheet:
https://media.dndbeyond.com/compendium-images/br/ph/character-sheet.pdf
Also happy to explain more about the doing
Search up "dnd character sheet explained", that'll give you a quick-start.
If you're happy using premade characters this link should get you a few options: https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/premade?icid_medium=ddb&icid_source=article-1479&icid_campaign=premade-characters-campaigns&icid_content=premade-characters
Are there any active or future campaigns that someone with minimal understanding can join?
Great question, in the same situation right now
I've played DND once and only got 3 sessions in on before my DM got booted for misconduct 😭 I have 900 hours in BG3 and I feel like I fully understand the basics, but I have no one to play with and learn from :/ i ADORED my character
Check the listings in #looking-for-players for games that want people, read the details, respond as appropriate and cross your fingers.
Type /looking and select the option for #looking-for-dm to advertise yourself as a new player in search of a group. Be sure to include your regular availability!
There are other Discord servers where people gather for games. You can find them in #looking-for-community .
Aside from here, you could also try LFG areas in sites like Reddit, Roll20 or the D&D Beyond forums to get started.
(Sorry Deva, I have that one saved)
Thank you guys! Sorry, im fresh to the group and a bit anxious lol
Ahh I only played it a couple times with my extracurricular English teacher few years ago and was about to play a campaign with a group of friends like a year ago but it never happened
I hope we get to play together! I had a water genasi sorcerer and I want to bring her back to life
Id love to play with you, I was supposed to be a warlock Smurf
Most groups will be accepting of newcomers as long as you carefully read the adverts, have a basic grasp of the rules (ability and attack rolls, your character's own features) and express enthusiasm and excitement for the game on offer.
Remember, DMs want folk who are most interested in their game!
I love that! It broke my heart to get so excited for the game and make such an elaborate backstory and character design just for plans to fall apart 😭
Yeah that’s a rough experience overall
I 100% understand and appreciate that! Im excited to hopefully find a group.
I am trying to play as a sleep inflecting wizard for cc and Artificer for main class tank support as a human
Yeah I really need to freshen up my knowledge about all the stuff cuz currently I basically don't know anything
You're in the right place for that, no worries.
#learn-to-play might be a good reminder, check out the free basic rules. We’ll gladly answer any questions!
Yeah I totally get you, if I find something for us I'll let you know, hope you'll do the same
Getting to it
Absolutely!! I'd love thank, thank you ❤️
Same
Thank you!
Im a bit slow and can't figure out how to make a thread in the "looking for DM" chat 😭
Do /looking for dm I think?
It should give you a form to fill out
Or in #find-a-game you can just click the button
(Look at Make a Post of Your own)
Just type:
/looking
in this channel. It'll offer you some options to autocomplete. Select the one for DM and hit Enter/ Send. It'll give you a form.
When you fill out the form, be sure to include your regular availability and timezone. Try to include good details where you can of what kind of game and experience you're looking for.
The form may time out, so you may want to take the questions away, write your answers in a doc you can copy and paste from, and do that all in one go when you're ready.
Thank you so much! You guys are incredible and im grateful for the help and kindness ❤️
My local library has a DND club and I wana join but idk much about DND

I second this
Thank you
silly question, but do backstories have like, certain rules or certain things you have to do for them? never actually played and im making a character sheet for fun to try get the hang of it, and im unsure if i need some things for it
No real "rules" in a hard sense, but if you're joining a game, there will usually be some sort of "theme" the DM is going for.
For example, if a campaign is called "Rise of Tiamat" and it's about defeating Tiamat and you know that the setting is the Forgotten Realms, you already have some information there.
I wouldn't then go and create a futuristic warrior from Eberron whose only goal is taking over their fathers smithy.
Another rules would probably be that you can’t make your character stronger than they should be
fair enough, at the moment its just a test thing really, i dont really know all too much about DnD as a whole, hell, im just learning how to fill a character sheet rn
For an extreme example, making them a god
btw, in the case of a warlock, do i add something regarding the patron there? probably should but i have to ask
Other examples are accomplishments in backstory far too much for the start
such as "I hunted down 5 dragons" at level 1 is absolutely not happening
You'd work with your DM, as your DM essentially has to act out the patron
ah ok, thanks
Certainly feel free to visit #character-discussion to workshop any ideas you may have there.

Is playing dnd with 2 people a decent idea or is 3 much better if I'm a first time dm?
I would consider three the minimum number I'd play with (unless I were just playing with one player), but most modules are designed for parties of four or more.
what razor said
I see, alrighty! Thanks!
Does roll20 have everything to start a campaign or is there some extra shit the DM would need to get to setup
There's a lot you can set up but you don't necessarily need to.
For example, you could set up player character sheets in your game. But also, people could just use a D&D Beyond sheet or even a PDF outside of the Roll 20 system.
You could set up a map and tokens, but you could also just use theatre of the mind or just show a map (with our without tokens; with or without dynamic lightning, etc.).
Sorry, not a super clear answer but hopefully helpful?
Hey guys. I got carried away over the past few days making my homebrew character and now i feel like a homebrew subclass, subrace, magic item, and background is a bit much:|
If you're a new player, that's probably too much. It's usually recommended for a new player to actually use no homebrew whatsoever.
But i already formatted 12 pages of homebrew lol (I get your point but now im too invested, this is more fun than touching grass so imma do it for the next hour.)
oh god
i know
I appreciate the love and effort put into the art! I do warn you, however, that something like this will make it considerably more difficult to find a group if you haven't yet.
"I have 12 pages of homebrew" is going to be like DM repellant during interviews.
more like anti-DM spray
yeah. ill probably use it for different characters. or just put it on google for others.
using it for different characters doesnt make it less of a problem
i think they mean diffusing it, so like 1 page of homebrew 12 times with different dms
ah
yeah
Hello
Hello all! Im extremely new to playing (as in just figured out how to make a character sheet yesterday) and was wondering — how does a player go about buying items or casting spells that require materials? Can you as the player just give them gold or items in their inventory beforehand? Is anyone besides the player keeping track of their things or is it up to the DM whether you can give your character items or not? Sorry for the wordiness of my question, I hope I’m making sense!
Quick example if I’m being unclear: say you need a gold chalice to cast a particular spell and you’re in session 1 of a campaign. Can you improv and say the character picked it up along the way/ keeps one in their bag for this spell, or will the DM give opportunities for characters to acquire useful items in their own time?
Spells can be cast with a component pouch or a focus, which spellcasters usually get with starting equipment. Anything that has a gold value, however, is a different story.
so usually characters who start with spellcasting start with a material pouch or spellcasting focus. do you already have a table or a dm? they can tell you specifically if you start with extra cash
the DM will give opportunities, you cant really say you just found one, most spellcasters can ignore non-priced components though
Thank you so much for your answers! Okay that makes sense, I was reading through one of the resource links and saw some spells have required materials and got to thinking about that— and also if there’s opportunities to bribe characters or wanting to purchase things whether a player can just say their character has money or not to accomplish that.
you will generally track your gold, so you'll know if you have any for buying or bribing or whatever
money is kept track of, again, you cant just say you have money
something small, like a clipboard or smth for an rp moment, is generally accepted, but pulling money out of thin air is not something you can do
Got it! Sorry if that seemed obvious lol I’m still getting a sense of where the suspension of disbelief stops when it comes to character lore/creation vs actual gameplay. Oneee more clarifying question sorry, let’s say someone makes an aristocratic wealthy character, would they then be able to just have money to pull out at a moments notice or nah?
Likely not, but you could always try to work with your DM to see if they would let you have more money than the rules give you.
no, tho you should ask your dm these questions when you find a game.
nope, still not, if your background gives you more money you migh start with more but its still not possible
i assume these are RAW questions
no clue, they might still not know how to get into a game yet
lets do newcomer questions first then
sure, is that not what is happening? i haven't lurked this channel too much
i meant that you were talking abt finding a game
So I just figured out how to use basic things in foundry and participated in my first ever session yesterday for a one shot campaign! I work as an illustrator so I’ve gotten dnd comms for years and then got into watching dnd podcasts so I have a rough idea of how a game should look but still figuring out how to be a better player.
Knowing the rules well is a start! Beyond that, it's about communicating and leaning in to the fun of the table (which includes yours but is not exclusively about you).
yuppers
ya sry the other times i have been in here it seems like a lot of people think you should make a character in a vacuum before having a table, but your table and dm can help a lot with it, and answer these questions better in context than we can
making a practice charcter is a good practice
good to know
thats why its called a practice character
i've not heard of making practice characters before, sorry
i mean you couldnt know
Yep. It's pretty common in this channel for folks to recommend making a character for the sake of doing it, rather than for the sake of playing it in a game. Learning what the numbers mean and all.
ah good to know, thanks
and it seems to work
looking at and filling out a sheet gives you better insight in what everything means
i'm not new to dnd but still pretty new to this channel lol, just looking to help out, so this is all good for me to learn how things work here
guys im struggling trying to figure out how to make a character, well im struggling on certain parts of it
See?😂
what parts are giving you trouble?
how does a hit roll work, how does a hit roll changes with level. how does one know what skills their characters can use. most guides i watched just pull those skill names out of nowhere and im left dumbfounded
you can use all skills
a hit roll is the mod for the ability the weapon uses +your pb if you are proficient
also how does a "saving throw" work, is it something a player should be worried about, or the dm will tess us what saving throw to use
scaling is either improving said ability or naturally gaining higher mod due to higher pb
a saving throw is a roll you make to avoid something, the DM can call for it
so the bonus to hit is based on a stat modifier (so like strength for barbarians, but dex for a rogue making a finesse or ranged attack, or int for a wizard's spell attack) and you add your "Proficiency Bonus" which goes up as you level up, from +2 at level 1 to +6 at level 20
what ive noticed from the videos is that saving throws are something like 1d6, 1d8 etc at level 1. if we level up will our number of throws go up? or the dice we use
....what
saving throws are d20s
I MEAN HIT DICE
OH
IM OVERWHELMED 🥀
hmmm, maybe they were asked to make a save to avoid some dice worth of damage?
thats a damage roll, depends on the weapon
hit dice is something different
your hp
ah hit dice are determined by your class choice
The type of dice that you use for your hit dice is determined by your class, and the number of hit dice that you have is determined by your level.
i see a "1d6" in place of the hit dice section in the current tut im watching
When you make an attack, you first roll to hit. This involves rolling a 20 sided die (called a d20) and adding a few modifiers:
- If you're proficient with the weapon or method of attack, you add your Proficiency Bonus.
- Add the associated Ability Score Modifier. Different things run off of different modifiers. A Greatsword uses Strength, and a Longbow uses Dexterity, for example.
Once you've added all the relevant numbers to your d20 roll, compare it to the target's Armor Class (AC). If it's equal or higher, you successfully hit.
you missed a *there
AHHH so it becomes "1dx, 2dx " and so on as we level up
btw using markdown isnt allowed in the server
do you mean damage here?
im confused what you are talking abt
the thingy used to determine if we hit our enemy or not. the thing that targets armor points
thats a roll to hit
Assuming you're actually talking about hit dice, then yes that is correct. But there seems to be some confusion about what you are referring to. Hit Dice are not what you use to determine if you hit a target. That's called an "Attack Roll"
i see ive been misunderstanding some stuff
all good, that's what we are here to help with!
only names i think
Take a look at this explanation, since you're referring to attack rolls
.
at least thats what undying said once
I don't think I've ever heard that before. I've certainly been in conversations with mods where I've used it openly.
it might be just for using headers
bolds, underlines, and italics are fine. The only thing that isn't allowed is strikethrough
i have heard that strikethrough is not allowed for accessibility reasons
thanks for clearing that up then
another question, i thought that the type of dice youre supposed to roll depends on your weapon, is hit dice for something other than weapon attacks?
im sorry i cant type my questions very fast english isnt my first language
you are referring to damage again
Hit dice are not used for weapons at all. Hit dice determine how many hitpoints your character has
OHHHHH
Hit dice aren't used in attacks at all. I know it's confusing. Hit dice have to do with your Hit Points (HP)
you are talking about to hit
😭 i thought it was to "hit" our opponents...
The proper phrase is "attack roll" which is probably less confusing in this situation
nope, hit dice is how much you can be hit
no hit die has to do with hit points for when we get hit
DOSH made a very good write up a few messages above that shows you how to determine if you hit a target or not
so hit dice + constituion = hp, now it makes sense why they always added it
That calculation must have been very confusing, with your previous misunderstanding
i am so lucky i just kinda clicked with dnd, this must be so confusing
yeah im like nodding along the entire video thinking i got it then i hit these massive roadblocks that spiral me to an hour of searching trying to figure stuff out
maybe, but then think about #dnd-elder-editions lol thac0 still confuses me
in 3.5 days i just didnt use effective level
Let's not make things even more complicated here
fair
agreed
thanks for this! this cleared up another confusion i had of the difference between trying to hit and rolling again for the weapon and damage.
imagine dealing 50 damage with a crit hit at level 1
school, libraries, game stores, clubs, etc
what do you guys consider some "must buys" if we are willing to spend money for dnd products
For me, it's just the core books and any third-party supplements that catch my eye.
i found my group online while playing megabonk, none of us ever played dnd before but we decided to give it a go in a few weeks lol
my point is you can find online parties as well
but pls be careful since youre just 14, majority of the dnd players ive come across are adults
A hypothetical 14 year old who is theoretically from Turkey might be able to find a game online.
Reminder that this server has rules against posting your age and posting your location.
hypothetically, of course
My bad
yeah that rules there for a good reason as well 😭
i found some REALLY beautiful set of dice but theyre 70$ sighh
i found a cheap 5$,that set will have to do for now
Meh, some folks are dice goblins. Some aren't. I am not, personally, but good on those who follow their bliss!
Anyway, @still silo, if you're in a place without a D&D crowd, make a D&D crowd out of where you're already in community. If you play video games with folks online or are in a server/subreddit/Facebook group already, you can suggest getting a game going!
i definitely fall under the former category, me personally id treasure my dice more than the books itself
Thanks for the recommendation.
Good luck. Finding a group and scheduling are some of the worst parts of the hobby, but getting over those bumps is worthwhile.
I just wanna ask is there any turkish people want to join us for new campaign

how does spell slots work?
see it as a resource, a level 1 spell costs a level 1 slot, a level 2 costs a level 2 slot, etc
Spell slots are a resource that you use to cast spells. Whenever you cast a spell, it uses up one of your slots. Higher level spells require higher level spell slots.
Sometimes casting a lower spell with a higher slot will result in other effects (but not always).
Also worth pointing out: there's a special type of spells called Cantrips, which don't use up spell slots at all when you cast them. Cantrips are weaker than most spells to make up for it.
do we have limited number of spell slots each battle? is there ways to regenerate it?
Your class chart tells you how many spells slots of each spell level you have at your class level.
every long rest (aside from warlocks)
Every class that has spell slots has a limited amount. All classes regain their spell slots after a long rest (8 hours of downtime). Some classes have other ways to get spell slots back sooner.
hi, im a little confused on how scores work, i just got +1 profiency bonus, and im proficient in arcana and investigation, my arcana is +9 and investigation is +7, so because i got +1 profiency bonus, i increase both of these by +2?
no i mean i just got +1 to prof so im at +3 now
shouldve made that more clear sorry
Ah. Based on those numbers you probably have expertise in at least one of them, in which case you would add 2 more
Otherwise you would only add 1
ah yes i have expertise in them both thats the word thanks
If you have expertise in both then the bonus to each should be the same. Both arcana and investigation use your intelligence modifier, so they should be the same number
There are reasons it could be different
I think there's at least 1 class ability that adds a bonus to arcana and not investigation
Hard to know if it's right without more details
hmm im not sure, we used dnd beyond to like start out with our scores and then moved to doing the sheets ourselves after like level 3
Clerics have an ability like that, but then I'd be confused how they got expertise as well
im a wizard, with fallen aasimar
it should be the same
Wizards can give you expertise in 1 but not the other, iirc
Are you sure you have expertise in both? What's your Int mod?
my int is 20 which is +5 i think
Wizards get expertise in 1 skill at level 2. If your arcana is higher then your Investigation the most likely reason would be that you have expertise in that skill but not the other
Then yeah, it sounds like you have expertise in Arcana and not Investigation
Since that's would be 5+2+2 vs 5+2
hmm ok give me a sec im trying to see how it went wrong
So when you reach level 5, your Arcana bonus should be 11 and your Investigation bonus should be 8
There's nothing wrong. You just don't have expertise in investigation
Do you know how you got expertise in both? As we said, wizards only get 1 skill expertise as part of their class features. It makes perfect sense to me that you would have it in arcana and not investigation.
You would have needed to use a feat or multiclass to get expertise in the other skill as well
in dnd beyond i chose custom background and chose 2 skill profs, arcana and invesitgation
Those are proficiencies. Proficiency and Expertise are two different things
ah so thats where i got confused
(You can think of Expertise as Proficiency+)
If you are proficient in a skill you add your proficiency bonus to any checks you make using that skill
If you have expertise in a skill you add double your proficiency bonus (2x) to any checks you make using that skill
Since your character is proficient in Investigation, your investigation bonus at level 5 is +8 (+5 from your intelligence and +3 from your proficiency bonus). Your arcana bonus at level 5 is +11 (+5 from your intelligence and +6 from your proficiency bonus being doubled)
Should I be concerned about playing with a DM who says they’ll kill your characters without a second thought?
(Haven’t played a whole lot of dnd and not sure if this is an issue at the table for other people)
its a red flag for me, but some people enjoy it
Depends on the context and the kind of game you want to play.
I don't mind a DM who doesn't feel guilty about killing characters but I also don't want one who's going out of their way to do it either
It's not fun for me when you're dying constantly. Been there, done that
The question you should ask is: "Is this the kind of game I want to play in?" Plenty of folks enjoy a revolving door of characters, focusing more on the mechanics of the game than the RP. Others hate that kind of style.
Fair enough. The context for it for what I remember is he’ll kill characters even if the death was a mistake and doesn’t allow revivals for stuff like that. Like a FAFO type deal and it raised a bit of a red flag to me based on horror stories I’ve heard
To put it into other terms: There's nothing inherently wrong with a mosh pit at a concert, but not everyone likes going to those kinds of concerts.
Yeye for sure, I just wanted to hear other people’s thoughts since I haven’t played at many tables or with people outside of my circle
Hello, does anyone know if someone with i believe a master tier on Beyond when they share a source or such and someone else creates a character with a class or spells or feats from it,does the character stay on their account until they delete it atleast? Asking for those of us who don't have or can't necessarily afford them🤣
i believe if you leave the campaign that character those sources get deleted after leaving the campaign
Ohhh dang....so unless the person just leaves the campaign up then its not an idea huh
if i remember right, the character is sorta soft locked. they can't advance without having access to the book with what's needed.
That is not a campaign I would play
So the character maybe stays but cant level up?
can't level up or use any feature that comes from the source you no longer have access to.
#ddb-support could probably tell you exactly
yup.
i think i have a problem. i've just downloaded about 2300 free adventures from DMsGuild. manually. that thing is a rabbit hole like what tvtropes used to be. i need to stop. i cant even possibly run all of that.
like, i even got stuff for 2e. i don't even run 2e.
Ah okay...hmmm, cause me and a friend really wanna look at some other sources stuff but its crazy expensive for us especially me even if its just to look or use a source or two and a campaign i wanna try haha 😫
that's why you get really selective about what sources you buy. you want to pick up stuff that you can get the most use out of. the player's handbook has a whole lot in it.
Yes we both looked at that since it has alot, and then each a class perhaps, and then theres maybe a campaign that also comes with some stuff that i actually like but the prices 😫 like some things can be sort of found or made with homebrew to bypass sources but classes and other things cant or are very difficult to figure out lol
Though reading up the class i want to look at is probably not for me,his i dont know if he would like it anyway
If you aren't married to digital, you can check your local library for the books
as a gm, things are a bit more justifiable for purchase. as a player, it comes down to what you need for the character and nothing more. when they had a-la-carte purchases it was awesome for players. just buy what you need.
Nah not me haha there's barely DnD stuff anywhere where I'm from and if there are stores or places then they are crazy expensive still, ive checked places and online, plus Beyond u need digital to use it on stuff
If you know the information, you can recreate it in your homebrew iirc. It's just more work
I don't use DDB myself, so I can't speak to the details
Then nothing maybe haha i can get or make homebrew based on free sources for most things
Yes especially feats or subclasses and such lol and cant homebrew classes so yeaaa
the big thing is use on the dndbeyond platform. i use my physical books. other than some of the free content on dndbeyond when they had stuff to claim, i dont really use the platform.
You don't need to homebrew classes. Outside of artificer they're all in the free rules
For the official content anyway. 3rd party stuff is its own thing
Official sources has 4 buyable classes and 6 more that are more for a specific campaign i believe, and theres a whole lot of subclasses that would take forever to figure out to homebrew haha
no it doesnt, thats third party
Well third party can also be official if WOTC has greenlit it on official sites or sources though
That's unfortunately not what official means.
Also, just an FYI, but when you reply, hitting the @ON symbol turns off the ping
not official
eh, i dont mind
3rd party on dndbeyond i'd consider "endorsed" instead of "official"
Its all the same to me since alot of content is made by other people and studios as far as ive read,so if its on their official sites and endorsed as u say i consider it official myself
"official" means made by WOTC in the dnd community
Then alot of the sources and stuff online and even on their sites is endorsed since its not from them, got it
yes, its supported by wotc, but not official
Im not really in the community or know what their stuff are lol
Yes, that's correct. The site hosts a lot of higher budget homebrew content.
Since here its not so spread out and well known
Okay but either way the sources are allowed in DnD games usually so thats what i mean when i say official u know lol
not all people allow it either
I just thought when WOTC greenlights and add it to their stuff then its under them haha
its not added to their stuff, its added to a website that supports other creators
I wouldn't play in a campaign or with a DM personally who won't allow supported content unless it doesnt match the world lore or whatever which all of them do except the 6 special ones
wdym? every worlds lore is unique
Dont know, all sites ive looked at and apps have these sources this far
I mean if a class or race or whatever wont match it
Which i doubt happens often
There are going to be plenty of DMs who don't allow all 3rd party content
Well i doubt we will use those classes anyway cause doesnt sound like us really
There are DMs who don't even allow all official content from WotC, and 3rd party content is a step beyond that.
Then the campaign i really want to play will likely be difficult to find a DM and players for since it wasn't made by WOTC like many others lol sad
Honestly, if you're brand new, and don't want to buy anything, I would focus on the official free content for now
Looking at other things you can't use isn't going to help anything
Noted, will have to find an experienced DM who would allow it and know their stuff lol
wait, holdup, you want a specific campaign but dont want to dm or have other players
Is it a module?
Theres one free campaign haha and i dno how long it even is or what it adds if anything
thats not the problem, the problem is that you need to understand the "normal" stuff before homebrewing everything
No just saying the campaign i would like isnt WOTC so
How so?
Uhm not sure haha full campaign i believe since can take a long time
Like, I’m just confused on this point.
a module means a prewritten campaign
What campaign are you looking at that you want to play?
We dont want to homebrew,we always use sources for everything,i only have 1 homebrew thing and its a spell cause i dont have the source sadly, but the classes and campaign are supported content i just wanted to have a look at
Wotc doesn’t decide the lore of your world after all, you can definitely play out of the Forgotten Realms and everything.
Cause not made by WOTC so not official like its been said now
So you want a campaign with a bit of homebrew?
So if its written its a module?
3rd party content is technically still homebrew
No its an already written campaign and even on all sites and sources, same as classes i saw
Ah so a module
yuppers
Hello one and all I have just joined the sever
Wahzzup
welcome!
Well then there goes most of everything pretty much as far as i can tell haha ill google an official WOTC DnD content list and have a look at all of that first i guess,i know one official campaign for starters so can do that maybe
Homebrew is still open at a lot of tables
most people do draw a line between it tho, i however still recommend using the normal rules before getting into a campaign
Seriously, what are you looking at?
Explorers guide to Wildemount is the campaign, and was hoping to look at the illrigger and gunslinger classes out of curiosity lol
Check out #channel-guide , helps you find where you need to go
Ah Critical Roll
Ok thanks
Okay, that is 3rd party content. Critical role is one of the more populare ones though, so your odds of finding someone willing to run that are higher
Yeah weve been having issues with going between 2014 and 2024 rules and stuff aswell, its alottt
But it's true, it's not free and you won't be able to homebrew those classes on DDB
Yeah been binge watching and loving it since i cant play IRL
There was a group doing it but timezones didnt add up sadly
Hmmm. Honestly, if you want to play that, you gotta DM it yourself.
The chances of someone offering to DM that module online while having matching schedules and time zones AND accepting you into the group is much smaller than if your started the group yourself
Yea i just wanted to look,my friend is going between a wizard and a blood hunter/ranger, me im having class issues cause i don't fully understand everything yet and combining 24 and 14 rules is iffy too when building characters so im stuck a bit
I'm too new to DM since i dont know anything about most of it and cant buy the sources or know how to set up proper apps or sites for third party help
I started my first DnD game as a DM. It’s rarer, but not unheard of.
And yea timezones suck, most groups are american on the looking tab here haha
I would also recommend looking at 2014 or 2024 PHBs/free rules, not both at the same time
I do love world building and being creative so maybe
Issue is when character building some spells or feats or such are for instance in one or the other
i mean i played my first time after 5 years of DMing
But ive been rebuilding to try and use one ruleset
I’m my first “proper” campaign (my first one was a like 4 shot in 20-30 minutes burst, all the others flopped, don’t ask) with you actually
I guess but i think id prefer starting as a player with an experienced DM to get the hang of everything and not have so much pressure haha but i could possibly DM since it sounds more up my alley honestly 🤔
I guess will see what happens haha issue is sources and stuff to DM
I'd prefer to DM with people i know first perhaps lol
You got the module
wait really? maybe this is my time to not make a satire comment!
Nope and its expensive on Beyond to be able to use the app for sheets and use the VTT to play and keep track u know
It’s not my first I’m playing campaign per se, but it’s the first one that’s been fully thought out
Well the book is not gonna be free of course, the DM you want to play the schedule with is also gonna have to pay for that too.
Beyond can take 6 sheets for free, and the players can send you their sheets anyway.
Some VTT’s are free
OWLBEAR MY GOAT
Ikr
Well if the DM has it then the players can use it atleast,i cant dm or buy it,its expensive here
-# it’s expensive everywhere
I looked at that hehe and a bunch of other apps and sites and sources
its expensive everywhere yeah
30 dollars for americans is pricey but can be done probably?
Or save up a bit
Idk I’m Australian
That’s like a lil less than 50 bucks for me, no thank you
My one friend is aswell lol
Well for me its just over 500 bucks, which can be my food and electricity and such for like a week or two or so if i budget well🤣
oh im sorry
Ope
And i only get a very small grant every month that doesnt even cover that amount
what is wrong with your economy😭
Its shittt haha if i buy physical copies or dice or stuff their all a few hundred bucks to a few thousand....
The campaign, players handbook and illrigger i wanted to look at would be over 1000 bucks.....
Plus master tier adds a couple hundred more on Beyond
Yeah then I suggest sticking with the free rules.
My best advice is still to accept that you cannot play those at the moment, and look at what you can get in the free rules. There isn't a magic workaround we can offer you
So lets say 1500 bucks
For now
The current free stuff isnt much haha its like rules, some guides and a monster things,a background from a source...and one module but dno if its one shot since its part of the one i want
Wish i could get IRL groups and help and shops that arent crazy
There are other free adventures available. Both on DDB and on DMsGuild.com
Only a few places here have shops or groups and di live in the middle of nowhere currently with no work haha
Otherwise, yes, the free content is primarily going to be classes and subclass rules
It has 12 classes. Plus rules.
Those alone can get you quite far.
I downloaded all the free content i could find,it wasnt much
?tag ddb claim
The following items on D&D Beyond can be claimed at no cost.
^All the free modules
13 actually, 12 for 2014/24 and blood hunter is free, along with some other books,a background and part of the campaign i mentioned
I didn’t count blood Hunter cuz it’s not official and so won’t be available in some campaigns
The rest should be tho
Intro i have...arcana i think cant be used on beyond at the moment, havent seen the rest since i checked the shop from lowest prices, ill have another look thanks
Yeah depending on DM i guess lol
They’re free on dnd beyond
No problem
Im not usually much of a chatter online but this aint so bad haha
Just so many questions haha
Hey, no such thing as a stupid question.
Okay 1st time trying to pick this game up.
Very well, welcome to the team
Check out #learn-to-play and then report back with any questions you might have.
Okay....well...i was going to multiclass but was tipped not to so ive rebuilt but still not sure haha maybe i should look at a couple other classes
I looked up illrigger and yeah sounds cool but maybe not me haha
I don’t recommend multiclassing to beginners
Illrigger is not an official class btw. It is third party content
Check out your options first
They know, we’ve been discussing it.
SO MUCH HOMEBREW AAAAAGHHHHHHH
Goddamn Alfiz chill, it’s too early for this
Yea just sounded cool lol but not full mage so not great for me haha
Lol
EARLY!!!!!!????!?!?!??!
17 minutes into the day and you’re already screaming
(That’s a wild guess at your Timezone)
only 2 hours off XD
Wizards, bards, sorcerers, Druids and warlocks (somewhat) are a decent variety to choose from
Yea i usually go sorcerer, then got drawn in by some warlock feats but its a different playstyle apparently, might look at druid and see if that builds the character i kind of want haha
Sensible. Besides not being a core class, artificers also have a bit more complexity thanks to their spells and their infusions.
Also noted here for future reference 😅
Hello!
If anyone is interested in a new player I started this summer at a dnd improv camp and I am ready to play!
Hello very new player here! Only did 1 one-shot game years back, I was wondering if it would be a good idea to buy spell cards?
Not until you get a game, I'd say
There aren't currently any spell cards for 2024 rules, so if you end up in a game using those, 2014 spell cards wouldn't help
You can post in #looking-for-dm
Asking for games outside the looking channels is against server rules
The 2024 free basic rules can be found here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules

So if I wanted to make say an egotistic Prince banished from hell. Would that be allowed?
And is summoning magic a thing?
You would first check with your DM is such a concept fits in their game setting and game.
Then you'd also want to check with the rest of the players to make sure that's a character concept that works with their character concepts.
Ahhh
Summoning creatures is a thing in D&D
That’s sick. I apologize I’m like NEW. Imagine teaching a toddler lol
No worries! That's what this channel is for!
Are there like online games with others I can play?
Usually you'll start off as low level characters so typically "prince banished from hell" wouldn;t make a lot of sense.
Like zoom/discord games?
Yep - check #find-a-game to learn how to use our Looking For Game channels
?tag new online
Right. Just a concept. Trying to write a cool character lol
Thank you!
Hi
Yes, and there are multiple flavours of it too. There's having reanimated undead following you around, there's having intangible spirits floating around you and buffing you / damaging enemies, there's summoning a creature on the spot. There's even Animate Objects to make objects become some minions
Well, in most D&D settings, hell is more... the plane of devils, incredibly lawful yet evil beings. The kinds that love their contracts and promotions and such. And devils are fundamentally, metaphysically, embodiments of lawful evil.
Like how Demons, from the abyss, are metaphysically chaotic evil creatures, and celestials basically being good
there is no good or chaotic devil, for example.
Hi I'm here now
Hi here now, I’m Nugget
What classes are there?
Fighter
Ranger
Wizard
Sorcerer
Paladin
Druid
Warlock
Bard
Monk
Barbarian
Rogue
One I’m forgetting
Artificer
Cleric
Cleric! I’m literally playing one rn how did I forget
What does each class do?
also blood hunter, technically not official but critical role is a big partner with Wotc
how could you? cleric is only the most important class in a party 😔 (debatable but still)
Hello
No need to get into 3rd party classes with newbies
?tag new class
Class
Your class is the primary definition of what your character can do and gives you a variety of special features, such as a fighter’s mastery of weapons and armor, and a wizard’s spells. This article provides a quick breakdown of each available class and can help guide your choice.
Each class also lets you choose a subclass, which provides unique features and further specialization within the class.
true. they need to realize how bad Ranger is before they learn about the better version
Let's not badmouth classes to newbies either
Ok Ranger is not bad
Hi!
ye Ik it was a joke
Hello
Yeah, but they don’t know that
Just popping in to say hi, or is there anything we can help you with?
ok ye fair
It’d take a while to explain each one
Check out the Dyno link above
This one
Kinda new to DND and wanted to see if there any games that are going on today
So, you'd unlikely to find a game here you can jump into immediately. But you can check #looking-for-players to see what people have advertised
Actually... that article was 2021, hmm.
I think there's a different tag that lists a summary of the classes, but I can never remember the commands
There's at least one for individual classes 😅
I'd also like to add that fighter and paladin are good choices for beginners on account of being simple and in paladins case, showcasing a lot of different features i.e. spellcasting, combat, roleplay, but it's entirely up to you what class you wanna play, and none of them are particularly 'difficult'
?tag new complexity
Class Complexity
Below is a quick overview of which classes take the most effort to learn. Low complexity classes make for an easier starting point, while higher complexity classes offer more versatility. Any of these classes can be played by beginners, so pick whatever excites you!
Darn nothing open
Like I said. Finding a game is not an immediate thing. It's a process
Takes a bit of time and patience
Ok
In which channel do I ask for help with a build plan? Don't have a whole character yet, just build ideas
If you’re new and it’s a question, you can probably ask it here
#character-discussion can also help with build plans, cuz it’s still probably for a character
Yea was wondering which is more fitting, I suppose I'll ask there thanks^^
Any advice for someone wants to do a a standard beginner campaign? It's a bit daunting trying to find a group that wants to take it back to the basics for a newbie lol
honestly, there are a lot of tables! unfortunately a lot of the loud/popular tables are the "min-max optimiziation, no fun" type of table. it just takes time
So what should I focus on in the meantime? Any good YT channels cover the basics of the game? A lot of what i found was from 7+ years ago and idk if its outdated
things from 7+ years are still probably using the 2014 rules, the preferred set for several (including myself). honestly, watching live plays while having the books, seeing something cool and pausing it to check the rules is what taught me
Okay cool ive been watching Legends of Avantris but there's definitely still a lot going on that I dont understand lol
Hey 👋 Newbie here, what’s some advice or tips y’all would give to a new player ?
Learn the rules
Don’t make a character that won’t cooperate with the party or won’t participate in roleplay
Be nice to the DM and the other players
Don’t go past boundaries
Don’t attempt to test or annoy the DM for no reason
If possible bring your own dice
Know what your character can do, please (it helps the game progress faster and prevents disputes because you don’t understand the ruling)
COMMUNICATE
When making a character, have an origin, important event/source of their power, and a motivation
Thank you! 👍
Does anyone know of a place to do an online Oneshot I'm interested in finally playing the game but I want something short and sweet just to sink my teeth into, thanks in advance.
#find-a-game perhaps?
Thank you
I'm new here, is there any tips or tricks I should know about?
(Btw, I'm already in a campaign irl as a light domain cleric, so tips specifically for role-playing this class would really help. Forgot to mention the cleric is at level 2)
Depends on your deity that you’re worshipping in game. Use language that references to them and act upon their values , and try and change your intonation or mannerism in speech to try to immerse yourself and others into the world. Getting everyone immersed really helps a game of dnd.
For overall tips
This

Would yall recommend a new dm to make a dnd world based on certain anime (jjk one piece csm etc)?
Frankly I would not, no.
The reason being that anime world often include elements that are difficult or not at all reproduceable by D&D, like superpowers (for example, devil fruits), or would require homebrew.
There are many assumptions made in such worlds, and D&D isn't really able to deliver upon those assumptions without a lot of extra work.
Definitely not. Heck, even for more experienced DMs, it's usually a better idea to see if another system would work better for whatever series they are trying to emulate, as most things don't really work well with D&D, a system based around fantasy classes, races and magic, and you'd need to either figure out how to explain stuff like that which can get difficult, or remove most of the classes, at which point it comes back down to another system most likely working better
Like maybe based on Frieren or Dungeon Meshi
Im starting as a level 3 college of eloquence bard in my first campaign, could someone recommend a spell list? I dont mind TCOE and XGTE
why is monk higher complexity than wizard
depends, for worldbuilding you can take aspects. But I don't recommend full new homebrew systems
Focus points stuff I think, I personally disagree with that
same, monk is like my second main after fighter and flurry of blows is not that complex
Wizard is basically just a pretty straightforward spellcaster where the complexity comes from knowing spellcasting rules and picking your spells from a big list. Monk has a bunch of smaller features you need to know when to use and keep track of, which can definitely feel complicated when starting off
I mean none of the classes are really that complex once you actually know them
fair
Monk is my main before bard
Evening or morning! I am new, and not sure how to use the looking for players or Dm channels..so far it just says I don't have permissions. I feel I have tried this in years past and was able to properly do a looking for post. Is there a manual or something to figure it all out..?
Yup! The instructions on how to post/respond in those channels can be found in #find-a-game
Any tips for playing rouges, it’s my first time 😞🤞
Dont ever end your turn next to an enemy if possible
You have the ability to disengage as a bonus action, use it
Learn how sneak attack works and aim to deliver it every turn.
dont play red in french
i haven’t played dnd in a hot minute so i feel like the strat is to just play rouge/barbarian so i don’t have to worry about remembering spells in combat??? thoughts????
Perhaps making your own notes for spells would help. Given how so many games online use battlemaps, I'd argue the complexities of tactical play in melee combat are just as hard to manage.
A caster oftentimes can sit at the back, maybe with some nice cover, and contribute from there. Your fighting types have to manage the enemy through their positioning and target selection to keep the backline safe.
Do most people use the e5 2024 rules?
That's a bit of a hard statistic to answer. I suspect by pure numbers more tables run 2014 simply due to the fact that it's been around 11 years. However, all future content will be made for 2024, and nearly all 2014 content is forwards compatible to 2024.
If you were deciding between 2 rulesets to learn, I suggest the 2024 one
Aaa ok
The stats. How do I get them.
Like point bye
Roll 4 d6 drop the small do that 6 times
Or stranded aray
Or does it vary from DM?
It can vary. To start off with use the standard array. It's important to learn where to put your high and low numbers. If you're not sure, there's a guide in the Free Rules.
Yes
Ok
Is d20 dice enough to play DND?
The dice?
I wrote it with translation, the typo is not mine.
Well, no.
Unless you’re using online dice.
It’s not a translation issue, i was just clarifying
You also need a d4, d6, d8, d10 and percentile dice: edit: forgot d12
D12
Is percentile dice the d10 with tens?
Ah oki
I should buy dice
dew it
Alright so I’m still extremely new but I’ve read it. The entire table of contents.
Should I continue to chase comprehension of the game, or at this point would it be better to try and find a group to play with?
Start with chapter 1 which covers the core game mechanics and flow.
Chapter 2 covers how to create a character.
Then practice making a character as that will help you understand a bit more about the game mechanics.
But don't feel like you have to memorize all the rules - it's more about being familiar with them and where to find them and how to use a character sheet.
well if you understand, finding a group is the next step. Reading is a bit different from understanding tho
Read, then apply. Make a practice character, for example.
If I were to make an artificer multi class what would be the best things to do it with
dont, multiclassing just for the sake of it isnt smart
Ok thanks
Hi guys I really really would like to play dnd but I have never ever done a campaign and as a result I have no idea where or how to start

can anyone explain what legerdamain is in sleight of hand skill
sorry?
i have never heard of a legerdamain
It's a soulknife subclass ability: mage hand legerdemain
At least I assume Dust meant that.
edit: got the subclass wrong, see Auditors message below
Normally, you cant use your mage hand to make sleight of hand checks - this ability lets you do that.
ah
No, none of that.
Mage Hand Legerdemain is an Arcane Trickster feature to let the magic rogue do sleight of hand stuff with mage hand.
Legerdemain is acts of sleight of hand, skillful use of hands when performing "conjuring tricks" - pulling a coin from behind someone's ear or pulling out a playing card from an empty hand is legerdemain, that part of sleight of hand.
So mage hand legerdemain is literally just "you can do mage hand legerdemain (which means skillful hand trickery)"
For 2024 arcane trickster it is straightforwardly just Sleight of Hand checks though.
its a fudging of "light hand" in French. just like "mush" to drive sled dogs is a fudging of the French word "marche", which means walk.
or how "parley" is a fudging of the French word for talk/speak/conversation.
Hi
Hi!

Hi
Anything I can help yall with today?

Hey! My friend and I are looking to join or start a D&D campaign. We both have a little experience, but we’re still pretty new—so we’d really appreciate a DM who’s patient and willing to help guide us as we learn. We’re hoping for a chill, welcoming group where no one minds questions or mistakes.
We’re both under 20, so we’d prefer a younger group if possible. We’re in the Central American time zone, and we can figure out session times and how often to play once we’ve got a full group. (This will not be a paying community.)
If you’re interested dm me 👍🏻

Goooood morning afternoon evening, Wahzzup!
not much!! My dm decided to delete their acc 2 hours before session without a word so..
here I am...
Sorry to hear that
nws! I'm happy to find the server and find more people who love dnd ngl
I’m assuming you already know the rules?
Anywho, welcome!
yes
Id say check out #channel-guide to see where you need to go for any needs
Oi, new to server. Hello everyone 🙋♂️
Halloooo
Wassup
Wahzzup
What should I do first if I'm past total beginner stage (I know the rules, no need to explain me basic stuff) but I still have yet to have my first proper DnD session?
Once you learn the rules and all that good stuff, it's just a matter of making your character and finding a game 💪
Either find a game, make practice characters, chill here and chat, or some combination of the above
Well, how to I make a character here? Cause I don't see a channel for that or maybe I'm blind...
Yeah, a long term group is hard to find
#character-discussion helps
I recommend using the dnd beyond maker
Heyyy everyone I have never played dnd and want to get into it like sessions once a week and meet new people where do I start 😩
Learn the rules first, check out #learn-to-play
Then report back with any questions
Thanks, much appreciated.
Finding a game will take a lil bit, and you should learn the rules first as well as probably making a practice character
Oh one more question. Is multiclassing allowed or that depends on the DM?
It’s usually allowed
please dont do it as a newbie
please🙏
But I don’t recommend doing it as a newcomer
yeah that's a whole can of worms that i would not recommend for newcomers
Cmon a good, well thought out one level dip that is suggested is fine.
But yeah multiclassing wrong is the easiest way to ruin a character
And it’s an extremely common mistake
yuppers
Many newbies also don’t know how well you can implement characteristics into a character without multiclassing
"OOOOOOH, i get to play TWO WHOLE CLASSES!!!???." "Erm, sir, you now have the weakest abilities of 2 classes."
For example, they might want to be good at social interactions by multiclassing into a bard, without knowing that there are other classes that get similar expertise in social skills. Or they wanna play a rogue cuz they wanna steal stuff, even though you can do that with any class.
I played homebrew in my own country's language and managed pretty good while multiclassing there.
Also seen a lot of guides on how to multiclass as so it would make sense.
That's why I said I never played PROPER
Probably won't even multiclass before my character is at least level 6
You playing a paladin?
I play lot of classes but paladin works best for me
And consider multiclassing into bard or warlock after a certain point
Ay just a complete newbie looking for a chill group.
I played bar and pal in a few one-shots and a campaign.
Check out #find-a-game to look for a game, and good luck/have fun!
I usually recommend to play single class at least to level 7 (even better if the campaign gets to lvl 10) before MC. I mean for a new player it really doesn't make sense IMO to start dipping when you haven't even seen the cool stuff a class can do.
Good afternoon. I played many years ago as a rogue in D&D 3.5 for about a decade. I am located in Hawaii. Are there active games weekly? And, my apologies, what version is here?
Hello. In terms of online games, most people here use 5e I believe, either the 2014 or 2024 versions. This server does not host any games, but it does help people organise campaigns as outlined in #find-a-game .
Ah. Sorry to have bothered you. Looking for a host site.
ive never really done DND online before and im seeing something about DND beyond do i need to pay for that to play games and stuff? like do i need to repurchacse books and stuff online even though i already bought a bunch IRL or can i just join games without any issues?

It depends on the dungeon master and systems they're using.
Some play through other services or systems, some use DnD beyond.
I personally play through DnD beyond, and I have source books and a subscription that lets me share to my players.
Though several players don't bother using dnd beyond, even though it's hosted through that.
They prefer to use regular character sheets and roll manually
Hi everyone
Hey everyone! I recently started dming with a few friends from school, not sure what I’m doing but it’s going good!
Yippeee
Welcome!
is there a way to download someone's character from a link they send you?
I wish to learn to walk the path of a dungeon player and gm
Check out #learn-to-play and come back with any questions, we’ll guide you on the right track.
Depends on how they send it to you. If its via D&DBeyond they should be able to convert their character to a PDF link which they can then share
Hello! New player here who is feeling slightly disheartened after a first unsuccessful DND session. I joined my school's DND club and created my character, but the first session's roleplay felt very awkward and stiff. The first thing that was said to me was "So, you're a female huh?" I decided to stop going after, but I still want to give this thing another go. Any advice on how to improve roleplaying or get a feel for how campaigns typically work, and get over anxiety of joining a campign? Thanks :)
I wish I could be apart of a game, I only dm
hello travelers! i hope i did the find a community thing right
YEAHHH!!! welcome!
thx you,i hope i do find someone who wants me to join the party
one thing i think is important is that you really need to find the right ppl for campaigns.. if the vibes are off campaigns just wont work out, no matter how good the story and DM may be. thats the unfortunate truth, you need to be social and find like-minded nerds for the nerdy nerd game 💔 if you have any friends or family that are willing to learn thats your best bet. and ig this server maybe? idk im quite new myself oops
Lol no worries, thanks for the advice 🙏
I think I'm good to actually find a game now lol
That’s…spot on
Friends, family, this server, local clubs, libraries, games stores
All are decent choices
Sorry to hear that.
In terms of improving roleplay, I like to say to not try and ACT like your character, but instead to BECOME your character. Put yourself into their minds, their psyche, and then just act naturally.
The outline of how campaigns work should be in the Session Zero, else just ask your DM.
Of course, the role playing thing is easier said than done
That's very helpful, never thought of it that way :0 thank you!!
i uh guess i just need to wait till someone wants me in there game

I just made my first character and im just reading the hand guide at the moment
How is it? Any questions?
It was actually pretty fun! I do just have one question though
I just had my first ever character miss 8 attacks in a row, any tips on how to get gud?
Then he died*
Say I wanted to join a campaign should I be on the look out for beginner friendly ones first?
that can happen?
Oh yeah! The I had to roll at least a 6 to hit the enemy, and I didn’t do that for 4 turns in a row!
At it's core d&d uses the infamous twenty-sided die. It is the nature of that die (or any die) that it's entirely possible to roll a great many low numbers in a row. Assuming different would be to commit the gamblers fallacy.
Maybe, having an accomodating party would certainly help you assimilate into the game
Get higher modifiers.
Or, tbh, pray. You got ungodly unlucky.
I HAD A +7 BELIEVE IT OR NOT
Meanwhile, I rolled a natural 20 against my players three times yesterday. The dice giveth, and they taketh away.
There are modifiers above 7
At lower levels, a +7 is very solid though.
Oh absolutely
I was a level 3 bro 😭
Then you just got ungodly unlucky
Pretty sure the math checks out to a 10% chance of you missing and it somehow happened
But also my math sucks
Now I’m building a new character for my guilds S2 and I’m just blanking. I was a monk, I like rogues and fighters, but I want something that can deal beeg damage
Any tips?
Come again? My enemies can be smitten?
Yup
Paladin signature spell: Divine Smite
What’s the stats on this smite?
Extra 2d8 radiant damage on a hit
3d8 if they’re a fiend
At first level, AND crits affect it too
And it can also be upcasted to do more damage
Plus they get healing, heavy armour proficiency and martial weapon proficiency , spellcasting, a horsey and a broken aura of protection that can give allies +5 to saving throws
Probably best class feature in the game
Now tell me, what class would you play for a casual game that lasts around 6 months?
Monk
Unfortunately, my Monk is burning waiting in line in Tartarus, so I got 1 less option. (They won’t let anyone class again for S2)
Let’s hope the furies/erinyes are nice to them
Gods I hope so. Charon be nice please!
Well, bard is my second fav class, so I’d go with that then
But I’m not you
Tbh I do recommend trying out paladins, their oaths do add a lot to their roleplay and gives you smt to think about in their backstory
Tysm!
?tag new paladin
Paladin
Smite foes and shield allies with divine and martial might
Paladins are united by their oaths to stand against the forces of annihilation and corruption. Whether sworn before a god’s altar, in a sacred glade before nature spirits, or in a moment of desperation and grief with the dead as the only witnesses, a Paladin’s oath is a powerful bond. It is a source of power that turns a devout warrior into a blessed champion.
-# Suggested Standard Array assignment
Str. 15
Dex. 10
Con. 13
Int. 8
Wis. 12
Cha. 14
Likes: Defense
Complexity: Average
Starting HP: 10 + Con. modifier
Btw you should know that they aren’t inherently religious
They get their power from conviction via an oath
anyone have any duet campaign recommendations?
Do you mean as in campaigns you can do with two player characters?
I mean a campaign with a DM and one player!! I know that's not how the game is meant to be played but I don't have enough friends and I'm too shy to join any existing groups ':-)
thank you!!
Is their suprise damage buffs
no
The surprised condition only inflicts disadvantage on initiative rolls
Ok you saw my previous messages in character discussion so I have no more questions and I've awnsers your questions
hey, im new. can any1 add me to their parties
Check out #find-a-game
