Once you are more familiar with the rules it's pretty fast
I'm partial to the witcher 3 soundtrack
Hi
Hey guys I’m trying to start playing. How would I find a group, start, etc.

bro some person name 'sea' just friended me and didnt respond
i think they might have been scammer
i unfriended them
Very common scam, report them
What?
i unfriended them too fast and i cant find them anymore
Then just leave them
The more important thing is that you either unfriended, closed or blocked
And you did that, so that’s good
unfriended and closed
Good cybersecurity skills
Well while we’re here got any dnd questions?
not really yet
just wanted to join so that when i eventually have time i can find a group or sometihng
thank you tho
Hi there
I'm an artist who likes to design creatures and humanoids
Just home brewing my own species I guess
Where would be the best place to post that stuff
#dnd-advertisements if you’re trying to sell it
Hi everyone, I’m Nunyabeez and I have never played dnd before but I’d really like to start. I am a crafts person and have made some miniatures and dioramas before as well as larger things like the clone helmet in my pfp. I am brand new with little knowledge but if there are any parties that would be open to teach a newbie or and new campaigns starting soon I would love to join! Can’t wait to learn some new nerdy stuff.
Check out #find-a-game !
Thanks!
Been thinking about this recently, is it normal for players/Dms to want to play in the evening ? Tbh I’d much prefer to play at mid day, lets me feel less insecure about causing noise, lets me properly get into character when talking, just asking here because I’ve only ever had one session before
People like to play when they have free time and that tends to be after work/education
You may find afternoon games on a weekend
Hello?
welcome!
Does anybody know how stats are made for your character or does it vary based on the group you’re in?
hellooooo im a new fresh noob who wishes to play dnd for the first time ever. never played a session, dont know nothing, but im very interested in starting this new adventure and making some long lasting new friends from this roleplaying game
3 methods
Standard array 15,14,13,13,10,8
Point buy
Rolling 4 d6 and drop the lowest for each ability score
Have a look at #learn-to-play has some great info and links to free basic rules
Thanks to time zones, its also possible to play so its midday for you, and other time for someone else!
Thank you!
This is my first time here, but I always think D&D is too interesting that I want to try it out
Is world ideas allowed here? Where do I send that?
Worldbuilding's for dungeon masters, right?
We do have #dm-world-building
Anyone can be a Dungeon Master. It's easier than ever with all the free advice and guides online.
If you're looking at doing it for the first time, I recommend starting with a short adventure: a situation in a location where the party will encounter opposition and have to deal with a complication.
#dm-discussion is always open!
hey! how would one like to start a dnd campaign?
Find an adventure you want to run and find people to play it with
i was just wondering if someone would be willing to help me build a character?
I gtg for now, but I should be back soon to help! Though some others might help you in my place.
What in particular do you need help with?

well just like figuring out what races work well with what classes and like what equiptment to choose
it’s my first time ever playing in a couple of weeks
Races don’t particularly matter too much in 2024, just pick whatever you think would be cool
oh don’t they?
But anywho, I gtg now, I’ll be back in 0-15 minutes.
And yeah, cuz we get stats from backgrounds instead of species now, it’s great.
Pick whatever you think is coolest, and we’ll see if how well it does in 2024:your character
Aight im back.
So any ideas so far on what you want?
For example, do you have a vibe, playstyle, aesthetic, trope or overall concept you’re looking for?
i’ve really been thinking about like being a monk cause it seems cool but i don’t know entirely
Well monks are my favourite class, so I definitely do recommend them
Any idea on the backstory or thematics of the character?
And what specifically is making you want monk? What about them is cool?
just the idea of the monk lol
my friend told me that theyre like martial artists and stuff like that
which i think is awesome
The devout pray Buddhist monk type, the Murim martial arts type, or the throw hands type of monk?
hmmmm like a mix between the buddhist one and the murim one
I just ran my first session and some of the feedback from my players was that I needed to improve my descriptions for areas and the surroundings, any advice how to do this.
Also any advice on how to organise things better?
Interesting, I like it. Monks are also pretty dang good in the 2024 rules btw.
@hearty blaze yo nugget i dmd you a question
Gimme a sec I got three people to answer
There was session?
Show, not tell
Use descriptions that tap into the player’s senses
Expand your vocabulary
A christmas miracle it happened lmao
Always miss them bru
ahhh ok thank u
thats sick
i dont know what else there really is to building a character
Species, background, stat generation, and backstory
THE LORE
hmmmm alright
da lore
what would be the best way to go about this
like with the backgroudn and backstory stuff
I like to do a base idea and then build up from that, it’s best to keep backstory’s open to adapt to campaigns
alright
Backgrounds give some perks and benefit classes diffrent from others ,while the backstory is more ya choice
ohohhhhhhhh
hiii im new to dnd any tips onm characetr cvreation?
also for character help I’d recommend #character-discussion , people can help out there
Sure
are there any oneiric harm based spells or powers?
Basic questions can still be asked here, just if we wanna do more in depth character discussion gives more insight
ohh ok
Oneiric?
sorry i didnt realise we werent meant to talk about ti in here
dream based* mb
For basic questions this works, but if you want help with backstory and other more in depth discussion go there
alright thank you
so do yall know?
nah i mean like being able to almsot enforce sleep at the cost of yourself entering as well
There’s literally a spell called Dream that does this
or just like you know dream manipulation and being able to hrut people while they are absdsically dreamiong (mb its a dumb concept)
FR!?!?!?
I was awaiting nugget to answer that lol
tysm guysss!!!!! ill chcek it out
Yes, it was suggested previously (#homebrew message).
mv i didnt see that 😭
I believe dream isn't exactly a spell you use in combat so I would not make a character rely on that. In fact making your character rely on a single spell isn't exactly something that usually works.
however there is the literal Sleep spell
Sleep do be pretty nice
as well as the classic "hit them on the head until they fall asleep" tactic
Tbf they only asked for “harm based spells or powers”
If I recall correctly dream is one of the more powerful spells too. You ain't getting that spell in the early game.
Yeah it’s 5th level
Yeah, that would take a while.
I mean a "dream" like character can still affect someone who is awake
So with some flavour liberties it can easily work
A friend of mine plays a twilight cleric who is themed like a sandman
Where can I find a good D&D server I can start with?
As far as general things go, this is a good one
As far as playing games, there's probably a decent amount you can just find publicly, get invited to, or just spot on people's Server Tags next to their discord name, given the amount of D&D players on this server.
Or you could just head towards #find-a-game.
quick question just overall, how good is an AC of 19 in your guys's eyes?
Im "kinda new" to this and most campaigns Ive been a part of were quite low lvl between like 1-4
Im mostly asking bc e.g. forge clerics can choose between a +1AC or +1 to rolls and damage for attacks, but is the AC bonus in this case worth it, or does the damage buff make more sense in your opinion?
(cos imo most damage can be done via spells anyways with inflict wounds, spectral sword and such)
Good for the first 8 levels, if you're a front-line combatant you'll want it a bit more after that.
An ac of 19 is very good
Because of the way that chances in this game work each addition to your ac is exponentially better than the last one at protecting you
As to the feature, how often are you really using your weapon?
building on that, main way to increase it further would be strictly via enchanted items right? like +1/+2/etc. heavy armor or shields
yeah AC 19 isn't anything to scoff at, that is until you get way way into a campaign at a high level at which point you have ascended past newcomer status
exactly my thought process, to be clear, this is (so far) just a character concept for a new campaign that Ill play in a while
Yes, magic items are the usual way of getting it higher.
jst trying to see if theres anything I missed, bc the +1 to the weapon just overall doesnt really seem worht it imo unless u are playing sth like a barbarian/fighter that mostly relies on weapon hits with not that much to go off off otherwise
anything else you can think of other than magic items?
You usaly get better armor as the sessions go on
Also most campaigns end at lvl 10 so it will be good for the entire time
thought so yeh
If you're dying for tips, hit up #optimization , they'll have some ideas.
I mean I kinda like to minmax and an AC of 19 at lvl 1 + basically constant bless buff and e.g. halfling race (or depending on setting, e.g. eberron) a halfling with mark of healing and e.g. war caster/mage slayer feature (we get one starting out at lvl 1 bc houserules) or e.g. fey touched just kinda transforms you into an absolute tank with potential for essentially "infinite heals" at that point in the game and e.g. also stuff like silvery barbs / disadvantage for spell saving throws for anything the dm throws at you right? xD
eh, I was just curious if theres any other well known methods of just buffing your AC without needing to be very far into the game
just seems like a funny character idea
ofc its all up to the rolls in the end but like 🤷
seems like a strong spot to start out
also I just realise how horrendously hard that paragraph is to read xD
Keep a shield or shield of faith spell handy.
true I guess but I was thinking more about like "permanent" AC buffs lol
You could take a fighter dip for the Defense fighting style for a +1 to your AC? I like to play Fighters with the Defense Fighting style, with full plate and a shield you have 21 AC, if you're an Eldricht Knight or have the Magic Initiate feat, you can even cast shield as a reaction to up your AC to 26 till the end of your next turn, which is quite funny IMO.
ah right, havent really dabbled too much into multiclassing so far tbh
also as far as I know the people I would play with are /would also be kind of new, so I dont want to "stand out" too much in that regard I guess
btw do u guys have a favourite class / a go to "character"
Well. It's min/max but, you know, the max comes with a min: you would be building a character with a high AC at the cost of less damage output and probably not so high DEX saving Throw. So not game breaking IMO.
true that, just keeping it singular class for now
I DID have some funny ideas for multiclass characters for a oneshot tho
I mostly GM, so when I get to play I like to keep simple for myself ahah. So I mostly play martials. I like Barbarians and Fighters a lot.
I see, tbh those are the classes Ive mostly left out 😅
any tips on them? like fav subclasses?
Zealot Barbarian is really fun, lots of survivability and a strong flavour baked in ( I like to play religious character). For Fighters, as I said above, I like Eldritch Knights a lot.
ight, Ill check them out :DDD

Welcome! The best place to start is with the free Basic Rules, linked in the bot post above. As you're giving them a read, we'll be happy to answer any specific questions you have here in this chat.
ok thanks!!
those are... a lot of rules ._.
Don't worry about that too much. Give the first couple of chapters a skim, get a feel for the terms used, then maybe have a go at bolting a character together for practice.
Ok
When you come to that part just remember this phrase: Standard Array.
You don't need to remember them all. At best, you need to know how to reference them quickly at the table. But at its core the system is pretty straightforward: roll a d20, add modifier, see if you beat the DC.
DC?
?tag new dc
No tag dc found in category new.
DC stands for Difficulty Class, it means the number you need to hit or beat with a die roll for success.
Oh ok
Difficulty class. The target number you need to roll above to succed. For instance, you want to climb a slippery cliff, this is quite difficult, let's say DC 15. You roll a d20, add your strength modifier and if you're proficient in athletism your proficiency modifier. If the total number is above 15, you managed to climb the cliff.
Equal or above
19 AC is fine. It's good at low level.
At level 5 it wouldn't be unreasonable for a generic enemy to have 2 attacks and +5 to hit. A boss maybe +7 or +8. So if you find a way to give them disadvantage you're likely sitting pretty.
Though it's not exactly invincibility. Then there's the unavoidable half damage saving throws saves that gradually whittle you down.
Decentish AC and a relatively safe way to impose disadvantage (or adamantine armour if it's available) such that you don't get critically hit.
True, sorry.
so e.g. shield master for the many dex ST spells
?tag new dc
Difficulty Class (DC)
The target number for an ability check or a saving throw is called a Difficulty Class (DC). If the total of the d20 and its modifiers equals or exceeds the DC, it succeeds. Otherwise, it fails. The more difficult the task, the higher its DC.
The DC is determined by the effect that causes it or by the DM. For example, if a spell forces you to make a save, the DC is determined by the caster’s spellcasting ability and Proficiency Bonus. The Typical Difficulty Classes table presents a range of possible DCs.

Oh okay, thank u
find a game, maybe a one shot, and try participating
Would I find a one shot on find a game tab? Also thank u aswell
Yeah, that's a great place to look for games.
Thank u very much ☺️
I learn a lot by getting hands on experience. And most groups are pretty cool with new players wanting to join.
hey all, I cant seem to find spell material components on Beyond apart from a couple, does one need to manually add them or are they not used in 2024 or does it depend on class or how one casts the spell or such like it says online?
most can be negated with either a component pouch or spellcasting focus (except for the ones with gp cost), and for those you need to manual add
ah okay cause i cant find the ones it says apart from one and it is only found in a pack lol i do have a pouch and a focus although not sure if the focus works for all my spells but it says used as spell focus so should yes.
If they don't have a cost or say they are consumed, you can replace it with a focus as suited for your spellcasting or just have a component pouch which is assumed to have all the random fluff
You just need to worry about cost and consumed
Exactly only the costly or consumed components matter everything else your focus or pouch covers.
i see i see
well all my material ones are greyed out and dont see consume anywhere so i guess the focus or pouch works
might actually sell or remove my pouch for the gold value since i have a focus anyway
also how do various containers work? like a chest or a cart or such, is it just accessible anytime like a backpack or such aswell?
Handling those is usually a matter of group preferences. I'd talk to your DM about them.
For instance, every character has a carrying capacity, which dictates how much they can lug around. As long as what you have on your person doesn't exceed that amount, most DMs would probably be fine with it.
But some may argue that a chest is so unwieldy that it makes no sense for you to carry it everywhere even if you technically could.
And on the other hand, some tables basically don't care about carrying capacity.
Jst go here
Here are the Free Rules and some guides. Dyno, if you please:

yeah i had a check and according to my sheet and the rules im guessing i am able to carry my gear, backpack and chest and im not even halfway to encumberance so yeah haha
maybe it works like item box magic in anime lol but might depend on DM yes, same with other containers or mounts or vehicles.

No yea im tryna make a character are there no stats i have to chose from?
yes, read the rules for it, you cann either roll or point buy, should be specified in that section
wait, how far did you read

If you bombed the first attempt, it can only get better, right? 😉
I hope so but i havent tried sense to dm. I had to get rid of my old discord account i did so bad.
Bet
You should take it to DMs btw. Organizing games in discussion channels is against server rules
I’m trying to
Getting everyone on one server is kinda hard
me or the other person?
Please use the LFG channels to organise games. Instructions can be found in #find-a-game
They were talking to Shroomzy. You’re fine. You can talk about learning how to DM here
Oh got it.
I remember for the time i was dm online i tried doing a mixmatch of scp and time loops, it was so bad. I had a dream and i fumbled it.
Running a premade adventure is often a good way to start, rather than trying to make up everything yourself
I know but i felt like i wanted creative freedom back then. i even made a somehwat cliche adventure sense then. It by no means good but its better and different than when i first tried.
Cliche isn’t always a bad thing. Especially if you or your players are new. Sometimes people want to experience the classic swords and sorcery adventure without any plot twist or unique element. The key is to just make sure everyone is having fun. It is a game after all.
Im thinking of trying online again as a player to see if its changed sense covid.
something has to be repeatably good for it to become a cliche in the first place lol
I was in a irl group but i got burntout because it felt unfair at times and we were in a mansion like the whole game intill i left.
I will say, I think “time loops” pose a bit of an issue, with how the game of D&D is structured. They don’t work as well as they would in a video game or other type of story telling medium
The only kind of time loop I've seen work well is the "keep trying things until you find the right answer to not die" version
Any kind of time loop that makes you repeat things you already did to no obvious benefit or removes things you succeeded at tends to be more frustrating than fun
May i ask but do you all do online or not?
Especially if the dice aren't as kind on later attempts
I don't currently play online but I have
I currently DM an online game
Im just thinking of giving online a 2nd chance perhaps.
There's a lot of benefits to it. I prefer in person but online can be fun too
I personally find playing in person to be more fun, but I play with some people I went to collage with, so we all live in different cities now.
I prefer irl too but its near impossible to find a good group where i am at.
Yep, that’s the struggle. I’ve been DMing online for almost 2 years now, and it works fine.
I think im overthinking it?
Almost certainly. There’s not much more to it than just going for it
are there any online alternatives to learning d&d that are similar to the real experience?? (dm, social setting, etc.)
I just made a post in looking for a dm, i just hope its good enough. wish me luck!
aaa im just getting into dnd and just made my first chrecter
now i need a dm i beleve

The best way to experience the game before you play is to watch YouTube videos of people playing it. Shows like Critical Role and Dimension 20 are incredibly entertaining and do a good job of showing you what the general flow of the game looks like and how the rules are actually used during play
awesome thanks for the help
What is your character?
World of IO is also usually pretty good if you like VTT style D&D
she is a hafling rouge names vanys! her mom was a seamstess and and deliverd to wealthy nobles ! most times she would tag along, but one day she got bored while waiting for her mom to deliver her goods, so she world wonder around the palace and steal from them (jewles, spoons, satin pillows, coins), but one day she got caught for her theivery and has been on the run ever since ! she feels bad for leaving her mom but sometimes sneakily puts goods in her house to make sure she is well off!
I’m new to D&D and have tried all those videos and I just can’t understand them and I’ve tried reading the rule book itself and I just can’t seem to understand it does anyone have any suggestions to help me learn and understand D&D
Is there anything you don’t get specifically, or is it just overall?
If by videos you mean ones with gameplay mentioned above, like Critical role or whatever, they aren't gonna be helpful to learning, only to see what the game is like, since they don't really go over any rules
There are some tutorial and guide videos you could try looking into
Btw, Seperate topic, how do I make a character speed online? I’m pretty new so I don’t know how to yet and searching it up is not helpful
Somethibg like DnD Beyond's character creator is probably the fastest and easiest way, as it will sinply have you pick and choose from options
Have ya checked out #learn-to-play ? It has some stuff that could be useful like the free rules, an interactive adventure and some videos and info
Ok, thanks
Thanks for the help I just don’t quite get it overall
I’ve tried the guide videos and stuff but it has never clicked in my head thanks for the suggestion though
So, we all gather and a Dungeon Master (DM for short) gives the players a narrative or setting.
The players will dictate what their characters do, and the DM will describe the effects of the actions, as well as descriptions on the environment and interactions with NPC’s
If a player wants to perform a task that has some difficulty to it, they will roll a d20 (20 sided dice) to determine how well they complete the task (for example, doing a backflip)
This roll will usually have modifiers, which are added to or subtracted from the roll. This modifier is determined by the stats and skills the character has during character creation.
For example, if you’re dexterious and have proficiency in acrobatics, you could have a + 5 to your backflip roll.
Does that make sense so far?
Yeah but how does character creation work
As a quick summary you pick your species, class, and background, then you set your stats using one of the official methods
Yup
Have you checked out the second section of the Basic Rules yet? That goes over everything with character creation
(Standard array, point buy and rolled stats btw)
The official methods I mean
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character
Also helps with character creation
If ya have any more questions, feel free to ask!
Ok thank you
How to make a character, basic ability checks, modifiers, core gameplay, classes and combat are the things I recommend newbies learn first, then the rest they can learn when it comes up.
I know I'm not the one that asked the question, but this was very helpful. Thank you nugget
No problemo, glad to help. Have you got any questions yourself?
Happy to answer any
Not really, I haven't taken a second to look over the rule book yet. Thanks though
how do you explain the difference between sorcerer and warlock?
Sorcerer: Multiple spell slots, ability to modify their spells with metamagic
Warlock: Limited spell slots cast at their highest level, lot of customization with their invocations
The difference between the two is how they get their power. Warlocks 99% of the time use an external source of power like a patron or item to fuel their magic. Sorcerers are born with their powers in almost all cases unlike warlocks. Think like draconic bloodlines giving them natural abilities. That's the tldr lore stuff Sara explained it mechanically.
ty both ☺️
You gonna play one or dm?
I am playing a wizard, but I am looking into dming, so I wanted to know how to differenciate them
Kinda generic opinion from me but wizard is goated. Good choice. I am running a necro subclass. My DM was kind enough to include prestige classes for us. Necro is considered weak but I like it. Wbu which subclass
I am subclassing next session, I am going evoker, I wanted to play Order of Scribes, but my DM asked us to stay with player's handbook
lol, why?
That's the meme anyway, but the other "full casters" as they're called by the community get to the same power level as wizards at the same level progression. Sorcerers, bards, druids, clerics, and to some extent warlocks (as always, warlocks are a bit of a special case).
Me being warlock 1/wiz 19 getting more than one artifact out of my long journey and sugar daddy patrons. Now I'm patronless but it was worth.
Hey everyone! I’m new to D&D and just made my first character on D&D Beyond. I haven’t joined any campaigns yet, and I can’t attach my character sheet right now — but could someone help me understand how to play?
Welcome! The basic game loop of D&D is quite simple:
- The Dungeon Master Describes a Scene.
- The Players Describe What Their Characters Do.
- The DM Narrates the Results of the Adventurers’ Actions.
The free rules go over the details: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game
Should you want to share your character sheet with anyone here, you can post a link to the DDB sheet. Just make sure to set your character to be publicly visible first in the character settings.
and when you roll the dice pray to the dm that you will not explode or die in some horrible way
Good one, lol
You can just use the share link if you need

Is bard good
Bard
Perform spells that inspire and heal allies or beguile foes
Invoking magic through music, dance, and verse, Bards are expert at inspiring others, soothing hurts, disheartening foes, and creating illusions. Bards believe the multiverse was spoken into existence and that remnants of its Words of Creation still resound and glimmer on every plane of existence. Bardic magic attempts to harness those words, which transcend any language.

warlock first then bard for me
Fair pick
guys im buying my own equipment i have 120g to spend i chose a rapier im a art1/wiz5 and im not going to use any armor what should i buy with the rest? also im playing bladesigner
Have a look if any spells you're planning to use need expensive material components (such as the Identify spell) and purchase those.
You could also ask your DM if there is any gear that might come in handy.
my dm said just equipment and stuff not spells magic weapons
Material components are also equipment.
But if they also say not to that specifically, I suppose buying a healing potion never hurts.
the packs can be useful they contain stuff like torches and rope and other useful stuff you might want as an adventurer
they each contain a bundle of items typically helpful for the namesake situations. So yeah having one is going to be very nice, especially at low levels.
I had a character just barely avoid instantly dying from a fall due to temporary hit points - it could have been prevented if we just had pitons and rope and stuff.
what happened after
cleric heal/potion up?
Got healed up from 0 by someone flying down (they were not strong enough to carry them + equipment)
so it took a substantial amount of extra time to climb the cliff we were at.
Moral of the story: Rope and Pitons.
broken bones?
u said u avoided insta death
is there a downed status in DnD?
there's being at 0 hit points
They had like 66 hp +3thp, and the total damage was literally ~2 points shy of being enough to remove all of the THP, 66 HP, and have 66 damage left over which would mean an instant death.
Again, climbing a cliff is something that, ideally, one has tools for, like that equipment, rope and pitons. Better to have the equipment and not need it, than the other way around.
First. THP acts like a "buffer" or 'disposable hit points' that go away before your real hit points.
isnt that just 67 damage then?
im a bit surprised no wild creatures attacked u when u were downed
recovery must have been quick
what class was this as anyways?
hoot hoot
While there was an extraneous circumstance that increased fall damage further than base rules, lets keep it simple
it was 135 total damage that would instakill - enough to get them to 0 hit points, and then another 66 (the character's HP max), and it was a very high roll on that increased damage (normally falling damage at its absolute maximum effective height, and rolls, would be 120 damage)
there wasn't even time to roll one death save before they got healed up, though.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game#Droppingto0HitPoints
ok
what class was this as
not relevant
also dumb question but is it not possible to like stick your sword into the side of the cliff to slow your fall
or reduce the height you're falling from
That would heavily vary between DMs, the character, and the specific situation. No sword, no stab.
crevice says hi
My point is, the equipment packs are nice to take in any case, because it's a premade set of equipment you could find use for. That, and rope, and other small tools like iron spikes, can be amazingly useful.
hm
no actually, not relevant. Because just as I said it varies heavily based on multiple factors.
Can I repeatedly hit something with a lute as a bard
That'd basically be an improvised weapon, but sure.
Hooray musical and malevolent and also if bards are counted as magic classes the lich if im correct can be any magic class correct
Liches are an enemy type, not a playable class.
Hi I've read the rules and created my own character. How do I find people to play with? (I joined this discord thinking it would be here - but are there other ways to find a group that lines up with my availability and accepting newcomers to learn?
I know but from what I heard anyways
I think it might be about flavour. The lich having originally been a bard.
I have never played so I have no idea what's happening
Becoming a lich is not something you do in most games.
Ok
I'm not sure if there is an official campaign out there where you can do this but I wouldn't be too surprised.
It is definitely not the norm though and would have to be discussed with the dungeon master, I imagine.
Thx I don't know much just got too many videos so decided to check it out I get lots of DnD videos for some reason

DnD isn't exactly a quick game.
Those would be one shots, but in general dnd is not a "quick game"
It usually takes a week, or more, to plan the start of a campaign.
Ok sry
Don't worry.
I can tell. Having certain impressions that may not be realistic is normal.
Yeah... for example, I'm in a couple of campaigns that were started multiple years ago.
Typically, the most usual format is playing a few hours every week, with each time being a "session".
Also I'm only here because I saw lots of recommended YouTube videos
Ok
I understand
Are you actually wanting to play DND or just here because you were told by a video?
What's the difference?
Well curiosity
Videos are a way of learning about DnD.
Those aren't mutually exclusive.
Someone can hear about it and then go on to want to play D&D.
True true my bad
The first time I heard about it was from DBD
If you want to play DnD, your goal should be to find a dungeon master (the guy running the world for you by narrating) and have him arrange a session you can enter, along with other players.
Ok
You might also watch some videos about the rules.
I assume from Vecna
5th edition 2014 or 2024 is what you might want to look for.
ye dnd is a role playing game, essentially role playing the characters in the story
Correct and I'm a hard thanks to the bards
If you want free content instead of paying, I would recommend 2014.

But yes, that "Basic Rules" link is going to be one of the most important parts to come back to later
Ok
Should I get dragons of stormwreck isle for my first playthrough?
Anything else I should know if I do make a bardb
From what I've seen of it, it seems good.
You will absolutely need to know how Spellcasting works. (Pre-emptive: D&D's rules are not going to line up closely to how "The Lich" does it in DBD, which you say you heard about D&D from)
Correct I'm listening
I knew they were going to be different
It's nearly 1 am for me anything before I sleep
One of the biggest potential hurdles some people run into is how spell slots work (yes even I stumbled for weeks on them)
Your best bet is taking a read through the basic rules yourself, and asking specific clarifying questions.
Ok
And if I do make a bard how exactly do I
Just description or drawing or something
probably sleep for more reliable brainpower yeah, sleep deprivation is quite difficult to contend with when reading a lot of text, especially trying to figure out new rules
You don't need to buy anything yet!
There are rules to mechanically make your character, from their species, background, class (you seem to really want bard), and potentially more diverging options further on, like spell choices, their subclass, and maybe feats. But that's future.
Most important is just figuring out the rules first before just diving into a character. Make sure you understand if they do live up to what you want
so what do i need to do?
I know a decent description wanna hear arleast before I sleep so I forget it anyway
need, not quite anything.
Recommended, is trying to find a game to have some first experience with. With some games you can iron out if D&D is or isn't fun for you, maybe start figuring out your tastes for D&D.
You just need the free rules (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024). Character sheets (https://media.dndbeyond.com/compendium-images/phb/downloads/DnD_2024_Character-Sheet.pdf) are free, dice can be rolled online, and free adventures are easy to find. Plus friends and a way to communicate.
Wanna hear a characters description before I forget him
how bout the story line
A DM can use a prewritten adventure or they can make it up themselves. Or do a mix.
There is no set story to D&D, as it is a TTRPG run by humans - even the adventure modules can end up having certain differences with events transpiring differently than another group's playthrough.
Wanna hear my character before I head to sleep
It's 1am I'm bored so wanna hear or not
Sure
sure
so i just come up with random stuff?
the DM does, not you
Not quite
unless you are the DM
He's playing DM
then you do🙃
We're in the same group
i reccomend using a prewritten first
yea i was elected by the group
This is what I got so far name Elliot he's an elv he's a bard and I don't know if I can but secondary class type stuff if you can anyways archer or something along the lines of archery he's just overly optimistic and also uses his lute like a baseball bat too much to hit enemies with he also is a master at magic involving illusions and also moral boost and can cook food food for no reason
where can i find a good one?
please dont do multiclassing as a newbie
Ok sry
either buy one or find a free oneshot
Just didn't know but us he decent before I head to sleep
If you're the DM, you'll wanna peruse #dm-discussion. But the important things would be to read the rules mentioned earlier. Besides that, grab a pre-written adventure on DMsGuild, do some reading/watching (I'd recommend the Quickstart Guide, the DM section of the Basic Rules starting here, and this Ginny Di video), and dive in!
?tag ddb claim

Didn't know art but other than that is he good
^ Some free adventures above.
ok ill look into that
That O my god autocorrect Im going to throw out a 5 story building
If you're the DM, just doing random stuff is a surefire way to quickly run out of steam and have the campaign quickly become aimless if they just wander around and fight completely random monsters, with no goal to march towards, no faction of bad guys to defeat, no terrible calamity to prevent.
Giving them something to contend with, like an enemy faction growing in power and conquering cities, a war between nations, a lich accumulating power readying to conquer a continent, growing elemental storms being powered by corresponding elemental nexus rifts across the world.
Everything is initially made up, but if you start with a core concept, and have things relate to each other, things stop being random.
Did I do a decent characters one person say something before I sleep
so basicly dont lead them astray to their main mission
So we just do smth abt perditus ig
And give them something to do in the first place.
It's like an enrichment pumpkin for a tiger at the zoo. They will need something to do, or they will pace aimlessly and not have a good time.
how we supposed to do that?
Should we tell them everything from the beginning or do we sprinkle pieces of lore throughout the game?
Idk find the materials
this lowkey important
Hey, could anyone suggest a server where new players without experience can have their first game ?
Can someone ban me from the server pla
i like the sprinkle way but tell from the beginning can work too, its just pretty boring for the players
PLS
tf
And they left
lmao
maybe if they dont get there in time preditus already got the material?
Thx
I will never understand that kind of behaviour...
Use Discord's Explore feature to search for "D&D Newbie Sessions."
☠️ ikr
Don't think we should put a time limit?
Thanks :3
Let them explore a bit yk
A bit of both tbh
what they know at the start, like how you or I know what's happened in the last couple of years
but we won't have the voice of the narrator booming and telling us what's going on in the tower of the dreadful lich tharumskar, spontaneously. There's spells for that
I’m sorry I’m very new to this, my discord layout is very weird, where do I find the explore page :/
So like information has been written down, but you start finding out stuff that hasn't been written from your experiences or smth?
Like history books?
I don't know what Discord looks like for you. You can also Google that name and you can find a Discord link on their website.
More like "the characters in a story know who they are, what town they are in, what the kingdom is called, and that dragons are a terrible thing. Is that a dragon in the distance?"
Ah, okay. Thanks.
The characters in the story discover new information but typically aren't completely clueless as to the world they inhabit
the poor level 1 adventurers going up against an ancient gold dragon
luckily they can bargain with it, because gold dragons are good in nature
They just have to figure out what's stalking them, or that something is stalking them in the first place
Or figure out what the dreadful lich tharumskar is even doing
and so on
tharumskar is a banger name
and it literally came out of me going "uhhh dreadful lich in tower, uhh tharumskar"
sometimes you just write some "random bullshit go" stuff and it actually works so you refine it and bam that's what's going on
After all, Tolkien had to come up with the name "Frodo Baggins" in some way or another. And they did come up with the name "Baggins" at all.
Making sure things aren't too silly or immersion breaking, and refining them, feels like most of the process
Are we allowed to use 2 DMs? Joel isn't sure of what he's doing so I'm helping him out kinda.
Sharing DM duties is a thing you can do, yeah. In fact, it can be great so everyone gets to DM/play once in a while. However, I recommend that each time you switch, the next DM comes up with their own adventure (or looks for a existing adventure they want to run).
i asked him in DMs if i could help him out but i havent gotten a response so maybe that could work?
Seems fair enough, thanks
I think he's offline right now, he's not responding to me either
Why would you not be "allowed"?
The issue is co-ordinating. Two people will have inherent differences in DMing style, what story they want to tell, what game balance they want to perpetuate. Find a happy medium, maybe one focuses Story, the other Combat, and they have private communications and workshopping.
And two people trying to be the game engine at once is just going to clutter real quick so one at a time, basically
oh yeah, about that, its your game, nothing that the players arent actively against is allowed
We're discussing the story together, so I think we have a fairly clear view on the story.
Okok
He said you didn't
It's not like a videogame where there are things you definitively cannot do / are definitively not allowed to do
It is literally human beings talking to each other over a table (whether it's metaphorical or real) and using random number generation to figure out what happens when their ideas naturally come together like fighting a bandit.
Aight fair enough
It uses collective human brains as the game engine, which is the most adaptable one on the market

Online play is definitely possible. I've been DMing a game online for about 2 years now. So if you aren't able to find an in-person group in your area, don't give up.
I'll take a look thanks
I'm not even halfway through and completely overwhelmed haha
Rome wasn't built in a day. Don't feel like you have to memorize everything right now. Take your time with it. Keep in mind that when you're playing the game, there will be 4-5 other people in your group that can help remind you of anything if you forget. Plus, its perfectly fine to pull out the rules and look something up while playing. That's very normal. I honestly find that its easier to learn where something is in the rulebook, rather than trying to actually memorize what it says.
Don't worry about that too much. Give the first couple of chapters a skim, get a feel for the terms used, then maybe have a go at bolting a character together for practice.

You don't need to learn everything—I've been playing for five years and still haven't read up on certain classes. And you don't need to read it all at once!
Ok, right now I am just tryna make a character. I have got the name, species, class, sub-class, languages, weapon, strengths, weaknesses, backstory, and appearance. I am just tryna figure out how to do stats.

Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
Use Standard Array described above.
ok
Reason being, any character you make now without a DM is for practice. Not all DMs use rolling, and even if they do, they'd likely want to witness your dice rolls. So Standard Array is the simplest way to get ability scores.
is there a way to go above 20 in an ability score ?
just read up on the D&D beyond page, and this are the classifications :
without items
A few classes have level 20 abilities to do this, and some magic items make it possible.
21–29 This represents an extraordinary capability.
30 This is the highest a score can go.
mh ok I see, was more wondering if theres a way to do that without hitting lets say higher then lvl 12 (or even 10)
Barring lucky dice rolls for stats, you might get one ability to 20 by level 12.
oh no Ive found that 1 score of 20 is easily achievable even at level one
you only need a 16-17 which isnt thaaaaat uncommon when rolling 4 drop lowest
if you are lvl 4 its basically guaranteed if u pick the right feats
that is to say we start with an extra feat so
so even 15 is enough by then with +2 from racial
- feats
but yeh a 16 makes it easier I guess
but then again even with standard array you get a 15 so at least a 19 is achievable
Well, if you start introducing homebrew features like an extra feat at level 1, that is quickly going to make general advice non-applicable.
Calvinball it is!
true I guess, but with a 16 youd still be close to that 20 even without the extra feat at lvl 1 by lvl 3-4
With a base score of 16, your background/species ability score increase could get you to 18 and the feat at level 4 could get you to 20, yep.
This is assuming that you have rolled for stats, which isn't something every DM will allow.
Hi I'm new to D&D but I have a character made back story weapons and stats all started and completed
welcome! Do you have any questions we can help with?
I use the D&D site but it doesn't really explain how the stats really work... Can you explain what if I have 8 in dexterity but it has a -2 in it what that means?
that the site doesnt work
what D&D site?
ddb i think
D&D beyond
also its best to start by reading the basic rules, especially the first two chapters

When you make an ability check that uses Dexterity you'd subtract 2 from the die roll.
In the case of Dexterity in particular it will also affect your Initiative and potentially your Armour Class.
Oh that's what that means! Thank you!
So, its important to know that your stats have 2 different "parts." You have your Abilities Scores, and your Ability Score Modifiers.
Your Ability Scores are the 1 to 20 number that you determine during character creation. Then you take that number, and look it up on a chart to determine what the corresponding Ability Score Modifier is. That will be a number from -5 to +5. The modifier is what you add or subtract from any rolls that use that stat
Ok
Hello
hi!
Goooood morning afternoon evening, Nugget Dnd Player Helpline here, how can I help you today?
I have a question right now. I’m making an order of scribe wizard. Who is a criminal however I’m not sure what to do with him. Because I’m thinking of doing a drow a gith and yuan ti
Like all three?? At once?
What's the question exactly?
More so what race I wanna do, but I have those ideas in mind
Whichever you find most fun! Take a look at the traits that each species gives and pick whichever speaks to you the most.
Double checking, you’re playing on the 2014 rules correct?
Or 2024 with 2014 subclasses and species?
I probably should mention. I am using 2024 wizard with the 2014 sub class as for the other thing, my dungeon master has more monsters of the Multiverse in addition with the 2024 players handbook
I’ll take your advice
I have a question just for fun what is y’all’s favorite species and class?
gnome warlock
Dope
I am guessing they are torn on what species to pick out of the three options
we figured already
Human/warforged monk
(2024)
Would choose variant human if 2014

Can one be a fairy or is that not a species like can you only choose the ones they tell you on the link

fairy is a species but not from the free rules
If your DM has the book, then you 100% can play it
Wait what does free rules mean

Okay maybe I’m js slow 😔
Cmon Alfiz knock off on the sarcasm in front of the newbie
alright alright
I made like one character like a long time ago when I was like nosing about but like I never knew where to start I guess so I kinda gave up after making a pretty character
the dnd free basic rules are rules made be WOTC to get people into the game
We can help you make one
No no it’s okay I be asking dumb questions sometimes and I’m about to ask another one what is WOTC 😔
Wizards Of The Coast, creators of dnd 5e
There is no such thing as a stupid question
The only character I ever made was a bard fairy she was cute and pink
Aww fun. What was her name?
Anastasia she has a fancy name bc she was a princess but she got exiled into some forest but it was a magical forest and she learnt loads of cool things about magic and stuff and now wants to make the world a more inclusive better place she’s so cute
im sorry i really need to fight the sarcasm
No no you can be sarcastic
Why was she exiled?
Bc of her skin colour how even more cliche
Details can help your DM include her into the world itself
cliche characters can be a blast. My own bard is a knock off of peter pan and i adore him
Racism, aight. Tie into themes of social expectations, prejudice and acceptance and you got a good character concept.
Do you know how to make her stats?
Her mum didn’t wanna exile her but her family was like nah not having this gal here why’s she pink so her mum sent her like little gifts and notes to try and show she loves her despite everything and Anastasia is such a cutie pie she holds no grudge against her bc she’s all about like peace
Aww sweet
That’s the bit I struggled with like making a pretty fairy w a basic ahhh backstory light work stats not a clue
Thank you !!
The method will depend on your DM, but use standard array for now
Easiest to understand out of the three
Point buy is a tad more complicated
Rolled stats must be done with the DM or a few valid witnesses

the fairy part is not as important

Well, not dying is smt that’s pretty universal across all species. All characters want decent con
Oh yay
my favorite character was a fairy barbarian
You need charisma to improve your bard stuff and spellcasting.
You need constitution so that you can concentrate on spells and not die.
You want Dex so you can improve your Armour Class to not get hit as much.
The rest of the stats are for what skills you want your character to be good at.
Oh okay so put the highest numbers there and js kinda pick what i wanna be good at afterwards
Charisma is your priority, always
(For a bard)
Ye
Also I asked before, is this 2014 or 2024
Idk 😥
Let’s assume it’s 2024 and you’re allowed to use a fairy (2014)
They’re compatible
Yeah I was gonna say I think my friend I did it with at the time used like the most recent things so 2024 but it was like rlly early this year
anyway, cuz it’s 2024 you get your bonus stats from backgrounds and not species
Actually dunno why I didn’t sent this earlier
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character
It’s okay I’m js rlly slow so
Np, it’s a lot to take in
So would my background be a bard and then my species a fairy
It's kind of like a specialization for your class.
A denomination or specialist for a class. For an IRL example, a paediatrician would be a subclass of the class “doctor”.
I’m like googling more than I’ve ever googled in my life rn
I know the feeling!
So it came up w stuff like college of lore and college of valour and stuff like that is that like accurate like would i write down one of those in the subclass
you also get features from it
Eloquence or Glamor would be a great chocie for a fairy
Yeah I was thinking of glamour
Eloquence expecially if you're going the route of trying to fight racism, since they get a lot of abilties based in convincing people
i can only imagine just a lil fairy screaming and holding up one of those protest boards
who needs a protest board when you can skywrite it in the clouds 😄
She’s 4’11 so little is very accurate
Acc I can’t remember what height I made her
Oh no she’s 2’11
Oh okay thank u !!
Fairy have wings, so you can fly and be any height you want 😉
Okay I’m kinda stuck on the skills bit like I know kinda what numbers to write but there’s all like these subsections under them and saving throw 😥
are you writting your character down manually on paper, or using the DnD beyond creator?
If I could send photos this would be sm easier
Dnd beyond creator
It will do the math for you on what your skill numbers are
when you look at the finished product it will say something like you have a +10 in Performance lets say. You would roll a D20 and add 10
Ohhhb okay thank u
For a bard, you def want Perform and Persuasion.
What’s a good age for a fairy 😔
I dont know D&D does fairy aging anymore so im no help there. You could go safe and make her whatever age you're comfortable with.
Okay okay
I don’t want her to be to old she’s kinda chaotic and young that’s what makes her wanna fight
me personally, ive always run fairy as eternal beings that live forever unless killed. no difference in appearance or attitude of a fairy that's lived for 20 years verse one that has lived for 200
If you have some spare funds to spend on them, i would highly suggest picking up the books Domain of Delight and The Wild Behond the Witchlight (Both are heavily fairy centric and have a lot of information about the Feywilds)
Most of her knowledge comes from some cool gnome that adopted her in the forest
And Lost Things, if you're going that far.
Wdym by lost things
It's an adventure before witchlight.
Why won’t d&d beyond let me choose fairy as a species what is this 😔😔
is lost things avalible on dnd beyond> I cant see that
Fariy is a paid content race alas
its part of wild beyond the witchlight now i rhink
I think it's WBW Lost Things. On DMsGuild. As a pdf.
Oh ☹️
?books
There are four ways to access content on D&D Beyond that you may have in your physical books:
- Purchase the full digital book from the marketplace
- Purchase a digital/physical bundle from the marketplace
- Join a D&D Beyond campaign with someone who already owns the book where content sharing has been enabled
- Use the homebrew tools to copy the content from your physical book into D&D Beyond (Note: Do not publish any content copied in this way; it is for personal use only)
Holly, your friends that you are playing with, do they have a DM that has a campaign set up?
as on on DndBeyond, if the dm has a campagin you can gain acess to the content they have purchased
I know there's a lost things paragraph or two in the witchlight book, but have they rolled in the whole adventure that takes place 8 years prior?
nah, but thats the best we got on ddb
I’m not playing with anyone rn I’m tryna figure it out before I try and find ppl to play with ☹️
the book The wild Beyond the Witchlight is a fairly affordable book which does give you access to Fairy as a species
Harrengon too, the bunny people 😄
Damn I didn’t realise I acc had to pay for things oh gosh
Depends on the thing.
ah yeah thats a bit tougher
Well, there is a whole lot you can do with the free rules, either 2014 or 2024. Elves are fae beings, which are fairy related. Gnomes and Halflings are small folk.
Would you say elves and fairies are the most similar
You're not completely out of luck. If you find a group, they may share content access with you. Or you can see if your library has any of the books (or if they can get them via interlibrary loan) and copy down the info that way, though that's obviously analog and not digital.
In my headcanon, elves and fairies aren't so different, but it depends on the DM's setting (and their interpretation).
Can I make my character a fairy if I write down like character manually or will that become complicated when I acc do a campaign
That genuinely depends on your group. Some will be fine with it, and some won't.
Can I still be a pink elf 😔
Description that doesn't affect how things work is usually allowed, but it's probably worth checking with whatever table you ultimately find yourself at.
yes, of course
Oh okay thank you !!
The main question fr
Can you not just buy singular content from the books anymore?
Nope, they discontinued that a while back.
Well boo
What would you say the best tool proficiencies would be
whatever fits best
how do i find a group
reminder that in dnd there are no objectively good choices, at least not from a fun perspective

o
I do always prefer fun perspective
Idea, but you could run your fairy as she is trapped in the form of an Elf until you get the curse removed (aka until you gain access to building it)
That actually works well as a long term goal too.
Oh my god this is such a fun idea like before she got exiled she got cursed into the body of an elf
Fae are broody things and i wouldnt put it past a moody hag to have placed a curse on her
They’re js mad she’s cute fr
You can have her out adventuring, looking for someone who can remove the curse
She’s a baddie fr ending racism and curses
You can make your character an actual fairy if you have access to The Wild Beyond the Witchlight book, with the Fairy species in it
They do not have access to anything but the basics, so the elf was the idea we all helped them come up with
I’m a brokie
If you get into a campaign that uses content share on D&D Beyond, hopefully they will have that book and then you can access it. Until then if you are just practicing, you will have to settle with what ye can use and imagine it a bit different
Sup I'm Caden
can anyone help me create a character
What version and what do you feel like playing?
i don't know what version but i want to be a rogue with a farmer background and a high elf
What campaign is it for?
I need a campaign
I'll join

Those bots have great info
Hello
Hi
Hey lol
Can I help you with anything, or you just popping in to say hi?
Idk I just joined and have about no idea what I'm doing 😅
Thank 😅
I'm not sure where to start I just saw newcomers and was like guess I'll go there
have you played dnd before?
Hello
Nope 😅
Hallo
Wanna learn?
Yes 🙂
Hello There~! One of my friends sent me here to look for players, but I can't seem to view the LFG channel for some reason. Could I get any assistance with that?
Check out #learn-to-play and then report back with any questions!
And yes it’s a lot
you can access it from find-a-game
I read the learn to play and Ik the gist of it but that's about it
you understand how to make a character and how comabt/magic works
Do you know how to make a character, basic ability checks, modifiers, core gameplay, classes and combat?
For the most part
Ok how the stats and race and class effects the roll of a die
Ik**
And combat is pretty simple. I can understand how it works but it's hard to remember everything and then harder to just put it all together when I've only ever watched it and never actually played
Whats the difference between looking for players and looking for community
If you understand that you could probably look for a game. I'd sujest trying somewhere in person like a club at school, a library or board game store if theres any near you. But if those don't work you could look for stuff on here
One helps DM’s find players, one helps you find other dnd servers to join and maybe find a game or make friends
looking for players is for a specific dm to find players, while looking for community is a bunch of players and dms looking for more of both often a discord server
Oh ok. Is it better to join a community to find games or is this server enough
this one probably for long term games, but if you jsut want one shots using the same character community would be better
Thanks
In person don't work cuz I don't know a lot of people
That's why I joined the discord to maybe fine a DM or a group that was ok with a new player 😅
There should be many parties that can accommodate that
Might take a bit, but shouldn’t be too bad
I hope not
Im new and would like to join a group as well
Are games free or are you usually expected to pay for them?
Well now idk what to do lol
you should check https://discord.com/channels/516367331358801950/750813601358676008
Hello beautiful people! Just wondering if there’s any official dnd spell cards and all for 2024 editions?? I’ve seen purchasable spell list things but they’re from older edition so it doesn’t align with what you can get for x y z classes??
Or any miniature figurines for goliaths lmao
I don't think there are any official spell cards, no 🤔
As for minis, WizKids has some goliath ones.
If in doubt, Heroforge is also a popular destination for custom minis.
Damn yeah I’ve seen some spell book cards but sadly hot spells that’s not available in 2024 version 😔
Also yeah I’ve made a custom mini on hero forge just browsing around if there’s any nice ones I can personally paint lmao
Hey there! Anything in particular you need help with?
Hello, I am completely new to DnD. I assume my first place to start is reading up on the rules and making a character? But through online searching I see many different rulesets and have gotten a fair bit of fatigue. Sorry if it’s a dumb question, but what exactly should I read to get started?

Hey there. The "Basic Rules" link above contains the most up to date basic rules for the game.
I recommend reading the first two chapters. Then, making a character as practice is certainly a good idea.
Hello there! I’m new to the server, though I’ve played a few D&D games before. I saw another person with your server tag and thought it might be high time I joined too.
Gooood morning afternoon evening, Wahzzup! Glad to have you ya here. I do recommend checking out #channel-guide btw, quite nice. : D
Thank you! I appreciate that!
I have a question about the links. I usually share links to Google Docs folders containing info about my characters. Is that permitted or not?
Yes as long as you give context for links
It depends on the type of game
There are payed games that u can join but u can probably find a free one if u want
like 99% of games are free
Welcome to the server, then!
hello I'm new here, just got into dnd from Legend of Avantris need help on the basics of dnd (not character building cause i read it already
Sure thing! Which parts are you currently stuck on?
Welcome. If you have any questions, feel free to ask them. We are more than happy to help. Though I have to ask, did you go through the character creation process before reading the rules for how to play? I have to imagine that would make things much more confusing
i read the rules of char making then made it
Ah, well there's still other rules as to how the game is played which dictate what the character choices mean, so there could still be some confusion there. Go ahead and ask any questions you've got, it's easier to resolve specifics than broadly explain.
i had question of earning money and combat system for fighter(i didnt understand fighter)
Money is typically rewarded by the DM, like finding money in treasure hoards or selling loot.
As for fighter, there isn't a unique combat system for fighter, but what was it you didn't understand?
"earning money" is mostly up to the DM. As you play through the game you'll end up in different situations where your character can earn money, such as completing quests, finding treasure, etc. But there's no specific rules around that. It just comes down to whatever scenarios and world building your DM comes up with
?tag new fighter
Fighter
Master all weapons and armor
Fighters rule many battlefields. Questing knights, royal champions, elite soldiers, and hardened mercenaries—as Fighters, they all share an unparalleled prowess with weapons and armor. And they are well acquainted with death, both meting it out and defying it.
-# Suggested Standard Array assignment
Str. 15
Dex. 14
Con. 13
Int. 8
Wis. 10
Cha. 12

This bot post
gives a basic rundown of how the fighter class works, and provides a link to more the full details of the class
is there a rule for parrying or blocking an attack
no, that is not possible, (without spells)
you do have AC, but once it hits it hits
Not as a general mechanic that anyone can do, but some subclasses, feats, and other special abilities can grant you the ability to do that
there is the dodge action which gives enemies disadvantage on attacks against you
There is a feat that allows you to have a dedicated Parry. Otherwise, your AC represents all of your defensive measures against avoiding getting hit by attack rolls
oh yeah feats exist
As for blocking attacks, technically...
The higher AC you have, the higher the enemy needs to roll to hit you with an attack.
For the feat, basically think of them like perks. There's a big bag of features sitting around like loose change. Some feats only fit in specific context. Some can be taken by literally anyone for any reason.
what is AC again?
Armor Class
so higher armor means enemy must roll higher
its a number that bascially reflects your ability to avoid attacks as the enemy has to meet or exceed that number to hit you
yes
we cant have gifs?
no
whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
because some people use tts to read messages

Howdy y'all. I'm new and would love to learn. I've done a couple one shots with a small group but haven't had the opportunity to find a group looking for a consistent player or who want to do longer campaigns over time. I'd really like to dive in but am so new, I have no clue hahaha!

@hexed rapids the 2 links above should help you
Much appreciated!
what races and/or classes are recommended for beginners (preferably spellcasters 🙂 )
Do you have a character concept in mind that could help with suggestions? 🙂
Do you want to be the kind of caster who fights only with magic spells ,or do you want the kind of caster who supplements getting into the heat of battle with magic and blades?
mainly magic but i do think it would be nice to have some throwing daggers that you could potentially imbue with magic or something like that (if the dm agrees)
So you got Wizards, who are your book nerd spell casters. you got Sorcerers who are born with some innate magical understanding and sling spells all willy nilly, or you got a warlock who made a deal with the devil so to speak in return for magical power. any of those appeal to you?
Species probably won't affect your gameplay too much, so pick whatever you find most interesting from the Basic Rules.
As for class, Bard and Cleric are great first time player classes.
maybe in the character's backstory i could have invented some kind of resign based substance that can be imbued with magic and that releases the bound spell upon impact if said impact is hard enough
i reccomend not homebrewing as a newcomer
The spell True Strike is a great way to flavor that idea. Bard gets access to that spell right off the bat!
good advice😅 potions might go boom
So Artificer's are a class which create little mechanical devices to cast there spells. however, that is a paid content class that does not come with the basics
ill start with the player's handbook classes and races for the moment
good choice
If the first three options didnt call out to you. you do have bards, who use music to cast there spells, and you got clerics who get it through a divine source
i think that covers all the full caster types.
Homebrewing is when you create something not currently in the game. It can be a spell, item, ability, etc... Generally, it has to be run by a DM before it can be used
i was talking about ingame brewing as in potions
homebrewing is something you should save until you've had a lot more experience with how the game works and how to fairly balance out the mechanics
Ah gotcha
Ah, you're transferring to item crafting
but thats also something i didn't know so thanks
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/equipment#CraftingEquipment
Here are the crafting rules.
Potions of healing are a few subheaders down
tysm
Sadly no, but I’ve always been interested
Well, you've come to the right place

Will do thanks!
Before I start trying to join a campaign, does someone has any advice?
yes your sense were right
Yes:
Make a practice character
Learn the essential rules
Learn at least 1 class’ abilities
And the overall “archetype” of the rest of the classes
Noted
Oh! And when making a character, have an origin, a turning point that changed them/gave them their power, and a motivation.
And don’t make a character that won’t participate with a party, won’t engage on social interactions or be openly hostile to the party.
Already planned but good to know
