A warlock would have what spells their class allows and what that specific character has prepared + the features provided by magic initiate bard.

Which edition are you referencing here? Generally we assume we're referencing D&D 5th Edition, the current and latest edition unless otherwise specified. For older editions we'd suggest using #dnd-elder-editions to discuss things.
I just thought about my character and I dont think I need to use spells at all
Any species can have magic, any class could have the magic initiate feat
Every spell lists what Components it has. Somatic, Verbal, and Material.
If it lists S, that means it has a Somatic component, motions you do. So if someone was watching you, they could see you do the magic hand waggle before a guy bursts into flames or something.
If it lists V, that means it has a Verbal component, magic words / frequencies you invoke. So if someone could hear you, they could hear you make that sound and then someone exploding.
If it lists M, that means it has a Material component. Something you need to have on hand in order to do it. You can use a Focus (as appropriate to your Class's spellcasting feature specifications) instead, unless the spell says the component must be worth at least some money, and/or says the component is consumed by the spell.
If you can't provide a component a spell requires, you cannot cast that spell. One of the most notable examples is being unable to provide Verbal components when in the area of a Silence spell, as the area is completely silent, so there is no sound, the verbal component doesn't work, ergo your casting fails.
A spell can have any combination of the three. Most spells have V and S, and a decent amount of powerful ones have V, S, M.

I saw earlier you had ideas on using shields as weapons, and using spells. While using shields as weapons is as effective as using literal chairs, skulls, helmets, or wacking someone with a bow, being "Improvised Weapons" rules (so, kinda worse than just a club or dagger) is less than ideal...
You could look at something like Cleric, a class that has access to armor training and is a very very good Caster.

My friend ( our dm) knows I have ehlers danlos syndrome so I canāt sit for hours at a time without bodily pains so heās taken into account giving us a break every so often so I can stretch without missing anything important

There aren't any species supplements for 2024 yet afaik, but there are rules for using the species in older supplement books like Monsters of the Multiverse

For myself, I have always found flavor in nonstandardized characters.
Backgrounds have benefits to bit of the classes you pick yes but you arenāt required to be to always be a bandit to be a rouge
You do probably want a background that helps your class' main stats though, if you're using the default ones in the PHB
For example, an unstable caster that mutters and laughs to himself due to interacting with a demon, but he was a soldier, etc...
Or maybe an elven acolyte rogue with magic initiate...

My experience is based in D&D 3.5, so I am unfamiliar with 5e. Yet, a combat DM seems to still make certain class/character combos very difficult to play.

Yeah that's not really a thing in 5e. Any race works with any class (again, with like 2 - 4 minor exceptions)

Literally the only combo that just straight up doesnt work, is Tortle Armorer (artificer subclass), since it's based on wearing armor, which is somethign Tortle cannot do š

D&D isn't all about combat, Your character might be trying to impress someone with music, get gold with performance, or distract others

If you need to ask "I'm playing X class, what should I multiclass into and at what point?", then the anwer is always gonna be "Don't multiclass"

The penalty is that you're only getting lower level abilities of the classes you're trying to multiclass in
While others are getting their level 10 abilities, you might only be at level 6 and 4, or whatever, for the sake of the example
Which is why you need to know what lower level abilities work well enough together to justify being at lower level in both classes than the rest of the party that are higher level in one class, with access to their higher level abilities
But because of this, it's 100% not a newcomer topic, and the advice remains; Don't try multiclassing without knowing what you want from it. It's not just as simple as "Yay I get to play TWO classes at the same time!"

i dont worry about alignment most of the time, it just never comes up in game because it doesnt affect mechanics and its more a guideline anyway
And oftentimes when it does come into play, often its just flavor, like the look of Spirit Guardian's spirits (Thogh that spell's damage type is also dependent on your alignment)

I assume that rerolling the abilities generator until you get the best numbers is frowned upon. So, what is the preferred method for determining ability scores: standard array or ability score cost.
If you're rolling, you generally have to do it in front of the DM
They choose the method, but if you're making practice characters, ability score cost should be fine
The standard array is just a specific subset of ability score cost anyway

5e doesn't really have suicide options, except maybe multi classing too much without knowing what you're doing. Or the obvious things like giving yourself terrible stats across the board

I somewhat noticed that. I am used to an adversarial DM. Predominately, the DM style was DM vs The Group. The DM would make you work to survive at levels 1-3. After level 3, it became more adventure oriented, but still a high chance of rerolling a character after combat.
Adversarial DMs so still exist, but I wouldn't say that's the normal assumption for 5e
Interesting. I must admit that the game is more exciting with a vicious, but fair, DM. Hard to get an adrenaline rush from being coddled.

Point buy can get you three at 15 and three at 8, or a pair at 15, one 11 and three at 10.

Hi!
Some campaigns do start at lower levels, and you level up as you go. This unlocks more abilities, spells and damage/utility options as you go. Levels are either rewarded through co (killing stuff) or milestone (when the DM seems appropriate).
You donāt inherently get more armour, but later levels usually mean you can afford better armor or get magic items.
I mean, if im lvl 1 I cant be somw sort of "Gigantic Berserker super tuff" warrior yeah?

I'd probably say "at the start everyone rolls a d20 to determine the turn order of the battle. On your turn you can do an action, that's like doing an attack, casting a spell, disengaging from your opponent, or move your movement distance. Also you can move your movement distance 1 time for free. Also you have a bonus action and a reaction. A bonus action is an additional thing you can do along your action and there are certain spells and abilities that cost a bonus action to do, like swinging with your second weapon if you're dual wielding. A reaction is something you can do out of your turn as a reaction of another players action. These can be spells and different abilities, for example when an opponent who's up close to you, tries to walk away without disengaging first you can spend your reaction to make an "opportunity attack" which is a melee attack against that target.

Using the current rules, your background also grants you an Origin Feat, but doesn't grant you a language anymore.
Oh, my apologies. I meant in D&D 5e (2014) does race, class, or background provide the origin feat.
Ah, so you're using the outdated rules. Then yes, your background grants you:
- 2 Skill Proficiencies
- 2 Proficiencies of the following options: Language / Tool
- A social ability specific to the background
- A set of equipment, usually totalling between 20 and 50g
Nothing grants Origin Feats in the 2014 rules. They didn't exist at the time.

Don't feel pressured to memorize everything, take it at your own pace and focus on what you want to do (e.g. no need to read every spell description, or every classes' mechanics if you don't plan on playing one)

well i have a old rp character from my high school day's sadly i have him memorized than the original sheet ( friend had it and lost it ) um don't know how folks would feel about a undead paladin who can' be knocked out but not killed
i reccomend not giving characters more abilities than they get from their class/race etc
yeah the thing is .. he's undead for a reason but was given a quest by the grim reaper ..

and also this sounds a little bit like a chosen one character, which are generally frowned upon
um the dm i use to play with ... was in high school and sadly has passed away .. to the big C
Alot of what you can and canāt do for a character is up to ya dm, itās good to have ideas but willing to change them when asked
yeah i kinda figured of just re-working the character
but can we get a more detailed info? or read the rules on what you can do
well for the character detail he was a paladin that sworn a oath to no order mostly cause the ones of his homeland were corrupt to the core and for his basic gear starting off with was standard iron armor and shield same um the other items ( dm was okay with cause she suggested them ) was the book of the reaper which was a quest item and the coins of grim which could be traded with the friendlier undead for information or to help them pass on
alright, so my tips are dont add stuff you wont normally get at least before getting into a game and quest items, just dont do that the DM can give you those later if they really want to
right and as for the two items they were given to him when he washed ashore of a new land (dm new land) since his home was destroyed cause of the orders power play

Some prefer texted based while others prefer vocally role playing ect
For example, Iām in a pbp campaign!
Play by post is typically quite a lot "slower" than voice, for obvious reasons. You might for example make one post per day if you're quick.
The first combat encounter took a few days for me iirc

But the upsides are that itās less invasive (no need to reveal voice or face) and extremely convenient in terms of time availability

It does as it says.
correct, it is basically an attack made by u like a sword or dagger of a fighter
It's like a short ranged fire bolt dealing more, but poison damage.

the biggest tip I have is, skim all options quickly. as you do, some will stick out more than others as cool sounding to you. once you have skimmed everything, go back to that 1 or 2 that stuck out and dig a little deeper. then you probably will have a better idea which one sounds the best for you.

You can play as a tabaxi but they are found in books that you or someone in your group has paid for

I believe dragon's breath requires a willing creature. Unseen Servant specifies that it is a force but not named as a creature.

I feel like I was specific there.. unseen Servant is described as a force therefore is not defined as a creature. Spell would not work.
Your character is a creature and therefore you can cast dragons breath on yourself.
Your backstory can be different
And Far Traveler is in SCAG, which isn't one of the free options

Think of your class, species and background as little packets of rules and features that help tell you what happens when the dice hit the table.
The descriptions you give to them can be totally separate. A holy warrior could be a cleric, paladin, fighter, even a warlock.
Ooh, I see. But if I pick Far Traveler, that means I can't have proficiency in religion even though in the backstory they grew up in a cult, right?
Guess the cult didn't educate them on the broader span of religions in the world, just their own.

Well he likes using ice magic but none freeze an enemy just slows or damages,but i was thinking if one could use create water or shape water and then he uses lets say ray of frost, other example would be mold earth saying dirt or stone but can only move loose dirt so dno if thaht could affect stone of if its up to the DM and similar situations or utility spells u know.
Yea thats what he said but i know one can ask the DM and its up to him,since mold earth is for earth based terrain i would've thought stone would work in case one is in a cave or such perhaps

So example i use shape water to make a humanoid form to grapple an enemy or encase it and then he uses ray of frost against it,i would think the DM would have him or us both use Arcana checks or such and if it succeeds it freezes the enemy lol or something creative like that
Or other example, if mold earth could affect stone with DM permission then one could excavate the ground beneath an enemy and ut would have to make a dex or acrobatic check if it fails it falls into the 5 foot hole and takes some bludgeoning damage and then next turn it has to make a check to get out the hole?
Creative spell and action uses like those examples is what my brain comes up with š¤£
Oh and another example, do DMs consider what characters wear or wield for certain things? I would expect my character being a young smaller character can affect things and for example long trailing flowing robes or such would make me have low dex or less movement speed or disadvantage on any movement checks like dex or acro or athletics or such haha just realistically thinking i guess lol
Was also wondering if 2024 rules work in older campaigns and if ones character is 2024 rules then i presume one shouldnt choose 2014 spells or such when making it? Races and background probably matter too much alongside that though for feats and such.

If you use an old background that doesn't give an Origin Feat with 2024 rules, you can take an Origin feat of your choice. That's in the 2024 rules

Like with an abilitys I would recommend just picking a class and race from the book but you can reflavor them to be anything you want (like an eldritch blast can be a magic tentacle if u want)
With your charicters lore u can just make it anything that fits into the campaign you are in (also remember that u will probably be starting at lvl 1 where you are more powerful than an average person but definitely not powerful enough to fight a dragon or anything which is an actual threat)

Welp, thereās a ton of tips now
Iām still a new DM myself, so take these tips for what it is. My preferred learning style is visual, so I watched a bunch of YouTube videos made for new DMs and learning the game. I also ran the older starter set (Lost mines of phandelver) with my buddies and I feel that was way easier than making my own story/setting. but def still take some time to prep before a session. Itās really all about having an understanding of the rules and being able to communicate those with your players and having fun. Good luck, itās do much fun!
guys can someone help me understand a bit better the bladesinging combo with shadow blade?
Well, shadow blade is a strong weapon, and bladesinging allows wizards (one of three classes that get it) to get into melee with their high AC.
Bladesinging also helps you keep concentration on shadows blade
so how would an attack sequence would work
im a lvl 1 art/5 lvl wizard btw i wont be going further in levels
Probably activate bladesinging and cast fireball, then next turn activate shadow blade, move in and start swinging
Takes 2 turns to set up cuz both take bonus actions
Fireball can be replaced with any non-concentration spell
Itās just a good choice usually tho

When you go onto create a character, there's like a box for beginner text, and a standard option which is a step by step guide to creating a character, it goes from class, to species, to anything else in an order. Hit points are automatically made from your stats
If u want to play an ork u pick that in the section that says "race" (it could say "species")
Other than that u need to pick a class and background before putting in the ability scores

Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
Basically, your DM tells you which of the above methods you'll be using. For newcomers, it's usually recommended to use the Standard Array, since it's the simplest.

yep. That's how all 3 methods work. They tell you what numbers to use, but you choose which stat that number is assigned to

Hey all,can someone please tell me how attack rolls would work? Cause things are being a bit comfusing, i know its a d20 plus modifier depending on what attack it is so str for sword,dex for bow and lets say int for wizard spells right? But in the attack actions menu on Beyond there is a hit/DC with plusses shown,what are those? The modifiers that apply already or something else?
those pluses are your modifiers. so if your attack has a +4 next to it, you add that 4 to the d20 roll. though on dnd beyond if you just click that +4 it auto adds it to the d20 roll for you

So you're right. An attack roll is a d20 plus modifiers, and those change depending on the context.
So that Hit / DC column you see is all of the modifiers added together.
Example: Let's say you have a Longsword to attack with. That one uses your strength modifier and, if you're proficient (you probably are), you add your proficiency bonus.
If you were a Level 1 character with 16 strength, your Hit / DC column would read: +5. That is, (2 proficiency bonus, at level 1) + (3 strength modifier, from 16 strength).

Attack rolls and damage rolls are two different things
Attack rolls determine if you hit, and damage rolls determine how much damage you do. You have separate modifiers for each

so your to hit will be a + whatever and teh damage will show that it does 1d6+whatever your bonus is

Like Gust for example says hit/dc or attack/save STR 12, does that mean the enemy needs to have str 12 to save against the spell like sacred flames dex save?
So your + next to a spell is its attack. so you'd roll a D20 plus that number.
the save being STR 12 means that the enemy needs to roll a 12 or better to not be hit by your spell,
Also at the top it says for example plus 4 spell attack but that plus is shown on the hit/dc column though and not the plus 2 modifier haha

Im struggling with that to be honest haha have remade my character like a dozen times𤣠cause i think of new ways to play or try things so yeah,usually magic based and usually utility magic mostly for creativity
Currently my character is multiclassing,tho i was tipped not to ask a beginner rather so not sure,not sure about background or feats either but have some i tend to stick to haha
So which ever you choose, make sure you are placing your highest ability score number into the corresponding spell casting score. example. Wizards use Intellegnce, so you want your highest abiltity score to be that. It effects the to hit and save DC for your spells
I try my best to do that yes hehe currently my character us multiclassing as sorcerer,cleric(thaumaturge) and warlock(pact of the tome), with sage background and human variant feats for more magic in wizard and druid classes, but everything is CHA modified apart from cleric i guess but have high CHA and WIS atleast
that is an awful lot of multi classing when you're just starting out. You can do as you please, it is your character. However, just some advice is to stick to the basics until you get your feet wet so to say
I built it up like this to try max out my cantrips and spells available for as much creative use as possible since im a utility mage mostly haha
A fun way to look at is to try saving some jobs for your friends to play too. If you take up all of the niche spot in the party, then what time does everyone else have to shine too? Pick something that you want your character to be REALLY good at and go from there
Yes i know,ive been told and know theres cons to it,but i just want a variety of spells haha,i will probabaly as i level up get metamagic and a pact for more magic options and more tome spells aswell,and then im not sure where to go from there
I think one that could be intersting for you to try out is to go Rogue (arcane trickster) this gives you some combat options to get up in the thick of it, and some spells to play around with. and as a feat pick up Magic Initiate (Wizard) which does give you two more cantrips to add to your arsenal
Thats what i did𤣠my usual friend i chat to and play stuff with has his own way of playing and we coordinate,but no one ive talked to uses the spells i choose or how i would try and use them creatively,as i am mostly utility
both wizards and arcane tricksters use intellegence for casting which is a boon too

My wizard and druid initiate both use CHA going with my sorcerer and warlock,only the cleric stuff uses wisdom,maybe should've gone bard for more CHA based magics or skills
i was only suggesting it since the arcane trickster uses INT, as does the Wizard initate. which means all your spells use the same ability score

tool around with a arcane trickster instead of multi classing for a bit and see how you like it. It gives you access to a LOT of skills, some combat features and spell casting. its kinda a all in one little package when you're just starting and lets you play with everything
Doesnt sound too bad but im not a very upclose combat person and the spells i prefer having are kinda scattered all over the classes haha
the problem with multi classing is that certian features that get stronger as you level up in that class get neglected. so you might have 5 really cool features but none of them are strong enough to hurt big bad monsters when you're only level 3 in each class
focus on ranged weapons then like crossbows. gives you that stay in teh background and pot shot things š

I did wanna go cleric protector instead though to get martial weapons for a greatsword but does not suit my character appearance at all,any DM would look at it and give me disadvantage based on what my character wears and his size and such hahaha
depending on party size, you can pick a lot of spells that focus on crowd control and buffing/debuffing
I like creative spells that can do many things if u put ur mind to it

Yeah i looked them up haha but in our group alot of us can do many voices and sounds and we even have a voice actor aswell,plus we all have many many years of gaming xp so good imagination š
Do remember that with a show like that, they are professional voice actors who have known each other for a VERY long time. Not all in person or even over the internet games will be like that. Not everyone can be THAT creative and get into it THAT much. All games can be just as fun as long as everyone is willing to work with each other and get a long
The friends i have are all like that kind of haha we all get along great and have similar humor and all like to do voices and sounds haha just only some have played or DMed DnD so yeah but all too far apart
i meant more that their time in the recording studios for voice acting gives them the advantage because they've trained themselves to actively listen to the others and not talk over each other for cleaner audio recordings. regular people don't have that discipline built up from a job.
In person or voice DnD just seems better since u can explain actions or what u want to do and so on
A good take away from a show like CR to have is to remember that all the players are giving there friends a chance to shine and dont want to hog the spot light from each other.
Let everyone have a chance to be the star of the show and showcase those really cool abilities
We wont record sessions anyway haha but we never really talk over eachother anyway,on CR they have quite a few times but guess sometimes they also just get into things too much lol

a number of different actual plays are a good idea to watch and take lessons from.
Indeed,ive seen a bunch of clips and stuff and thats whats gotten us back into wanting to try it,along with AI DnD being fun but not authentic so we were looking for real sessions but most time zones domt work for us haha sadly,but we have some plans atleast.
i meant like watching how different groups do things. no two tables are the same, and no two campaigns even at the same table are the same. find your way to play at your table. don't try to be BLeeM or Mercer or anybody else. just be you.
Well yeah of course copying wouldn't work for anyone,their personalities and skills are their own.
overpreparing is a danger too. those podcasts and streams have budgets and constraints and needs as far as an audience and whatnot. the average table doesn't have or need any of that. Lazy DM (not the manga) does a great job of condensing to things that are more effective at the table and in sessions.

the new 2024 rules are really not conductive to that, since they don't have access to phones or tablets or the internet. and its gotta be free. and printing out the 2024 free rules is just way too much for them to carry or read in such a short length of time that they have.
sounds like someone needs a players handbook for christmas š
the key word being free.
also, that gets complicated when theres a group of kids trying to get things up and running and all playing off the same book. who takes it home? what happens when they don't have it and want to run something with their family?
and likely it'd get destroyed outside in the snow
Ehh yeah, unfortunately, games like DnD become very hard to do when you take away internet option and hardcover book option
they didn't used to be. the Essentials Kit rulebook was much more portable. and few enough pages that it could be printed from the free pdf WotC released.

Hey, guys, newbie in DnD I am confused about Cleric's creation.
I consulted Player's handbook (2024) and Xanathar's guide (2017).
I am unsure about how subclasses for clerics work ( aka Divine Domains )
In one it says you to choose a domain at lvl3 and the other at lvl 1
Xanathar's was written for 2014 rules.
So if I want to create a Cleric, what book should I read up on?
You can use both. Just if you're using the 2024 class, you get subclass stuff at those levels (and all previous subclass abilities from lower levels then, not earlier)
It says to do that in the PHB, it's just worded a bit vaguely

If you're playing the 2024 rules then Yes. Your Divine Domain is the same thing as your Cleric subclass, so any features you would get as a result of your Divine Domain at level 1 (e.g. via a Xanathar's subclass) you would get at level 3 instead.

Not at all. It's pretty common to have music on while you play. I recommend video game soundtracks since they can be ambient or high energy depending on the vibe you want.

Doom is good. I rotate Final Fantasy, WoW, BG3, Mario and Luigi (the final boss music is really good), Chrono Trigger, etc...
You could create a playlist and change it up as you like
