ok
Also feel free to ask any questions you have as you read here!
i need help
What’s up?
Do you need to pay the 30 or whatever it is on roll 20 to be able to use the cool subclasses?
AND in extension to that, do you start as that subclass or is it you reach it at a certain level type thing
what is saving throw
its your characters abilty to resist or eveade an effect
dnd is complicated
It's a d20 throw that you make to save yourself from something bad happening to you
In the 2024 version of the rules all classes get their subclass at level 3
Which doesn't make much sense for some classes but it's ok
so what should i write in it
Yes, content past the Free Rules does come with a cost. If you're looking at a digital purchase it's important to note it will only unlock for the platform you purchase it on.
idk im so cooked man i wanna get into this but i need someone to hold my hand LOL
it depends on your ability score, if your character has proficiency in the saving throw and a few other modifiers
fr
There are saving throws for eich separate of the 6 main stats and they depend on the modifier of your stat. For example if you have 14 in Constitution that means your constitution modifier is +2 so your constitution saving throw gets a +2
Give it a go with the free stuff first. See if you even like the game!
There are options for content sharing. If you get into a game, you might find the DM has those available.
so it the same as the modifier
you right. Idk ive applied to some but no response yet so hopefully someone accepts me lolll i feel like this is the harvard enterance exams
You can also have proficiency in the saving throw, those depend on your class and you get two of them
But essentially yes
ok thx
Np
@radiant zodiac btw dnd beyond can help a lot with stuff like this as it has a free basic rules book and a character creator but it's okay if you don't want to use it
I want to join a campaign but I don’t want to play with a bunch of old people
lol
bwahahahahaha
I'm old, but I thought that was genuinely funny.
whats "old" to you?
good bye guys got to go chat tomorrow
exactly. that's the important bit. likely you'll have better results trying to get classmates or other people in your school as players. the internet's all over the map as far as ages and geography.
bye Unspeakable. hope you learned a lot.
bro is spitting astronomical level wisdom
I assume he prob in high/middle school
i just assumed old to people is like 50 and up
true, i was just assuming he means just anyone over 3 years older lol
That would be super limiting for a new player
or anyone really
same
yeah, best to avoid the CritCrab level of creepy.
No D&D is better than bad/toxic D&D.
true
Im a very new to dnd and have no clue how to play can someone explain how he game works : l
No everyone is guy or wants to be greeted as such but hey there!
Check out #learn-to-play and the free D&D rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
Thank youuu
Feel free to ask any questions as you run into them!
And welcome to the official D&D Discord server
Also are there like online dnd matches that i want to try my first dnd campaign since from what i hear its pretty fun
Yep, online play is very common. I suspect it's how most of the server plays.

This is an article discussing various ways folks play D&D online
Thank you again
I always admired any dnd, how to start?
I know something about character, and that I roleplay and that there are other players and a DM
I played bardurs gate 3 if that helps 😢
Why is it difficult to find a good game? The only 2 games I've been in were basically meme games and 3 DMs that I was messaging for a game that seemed like a more serious game didn't want me to join (one of them because I was helping someone on their backstory... and thought I was doing the DM's role). Is good games hard to find?
There's significantly more people who want to play than DMs, so there's a lot of competition
And not every game is going to be a good fit for every person
So TL:DR, yes, finding the right D&D group is often a long process
I can't wait to be able to post in the looking for dm chat again
so i guess it's better to start learning to be a DM than a player?
DMing is probably the fastest way to get into a D&D game, yes
But that doesn't mean you should stop looking for a game to play in. Just be prepared for a marathon, not a sprint
thank you
Is there anyway to practice being a dm, ngl I'm kinda getting stressed out
The main way to practice is running games. What parts are stressing you out?
I have never before dm ed but I’ve always wanted to just chickened out before hand, I’m currently writing a one shot for me and my friends to test my ability to actual dm, does anybody got any advice? Also any tips for homebrew? I’m planning on making it based in a camp/spooky cemetery and idk if I should make it more story or combat focused for my first time
Here's what I've said about one-shots previously: #dm-discussion message
Homebrew is tough for someone new, so I'd recommend against it.
Hello
Hi
hellooo
hi
how is everyone?
Hello 👋
of course! and i'm glad you're well man
i wanna make a character, but i think i need a little help with one since it's a little complicated
uhhh idk lol i guess the newest? i have the d&d beyond app installed and im trying to make a character with that
dndbeyond is very easy, there are just options you need to click
ah word, i personally have not made a character on ddb, so unfortunately i can only really help with more general inquiries.
that's okay! i have plenty of questions anyways
oh, i'll take a look, thank you!
Quick question about critical hits: does it only count as a crit if you roll a nat 20 or does it also count as a crit if you roll like an 18 and then the modifier boosts it to 20 or higher?
Only a 20 on the die
(Unless you have 1 of the special features that makes an 18 or 19 count too. But they'll say it)
hello all
sleepy. hbu
👋
hey how's it going?
im well, thank you! just trying to stay up a little longer before i rest
i see. im wondering what it takes to get into a game lol
Like the steps or the knowledge you should have first?
i have no idea, as this is my first time in the server let alone trying to make a character
both really. lol
the knowledge, know what your character can do and what you need to do for it
Minimum imo is how to make a character, basic ability checks, modifiers, core gameplay, classes and combat.
#find-a-game is a good place to well, find a game
the steps, ask friends/find a game online, for on this server check out #find-a-game
ive played a few times.. but i dont a firm sense of what im doing
Do you understand your skill checks and combat?
Those are the main ones apart from making your character
well skill checks related to something like strength or wisdom
(+proficiency or expertise if you have it)
im curious what it takes to play cleric
Parenting skills/hj
Having a healer can leave some players a bit…reckless
oh. okay
But in all seriousness it doesn’t take much
Just a basic understanding of spellcasting and patience
so what was that about basic skill checks?
do you know them?
No not off the top of my head
-# Senior plz help me out I gtg
or rather, understand them
this contains all info on skill checks and ability scores
okay so I meet a check, and I roll to meet this check. and based upon my skills and investment, level I get to surpass this check
cool
2014: Sorcerer, is wisdom or cont. more important if I have 16 dex (from halfling bonus). A lot of spells have wisdom saving throws but having an extra hit point is pretty nice
cpn
con. Easily.
More health and better concentration rolls
Plus, the wisdom saving throw's DC is based on your charisma stat
helloo
hai
i've been wanting to play as a dm and i've been using my time to learn about the core gameplay and stuff, can i have any tips?
Communicate with your players
Respect your players
Put passion into the game
Don’t overprep
Expand your vocabulary
Show, not tell (and use descriptive language that talks into all senses)
Have fun, no stress, and COMMUNICATE
Have a session zero
You don’t write a story, your party lives through one. Don’t prepare tales, prepare scenarios.
Try to know more than your players
COMMUNICATE
thank you lots!!
also, whats a session zero? (heard of it but i dunno how it works or helps)
oh also there's a whole channel just for dm stuff #dm-discussion
look forward to when you have some questions over there for us!
A shorter session that goes over key themes, "genres" and characteristics of the campaign, as well as outlining boundaries that the players or DM might have. Also there to know of any DM bans, changes or other rulings, and can be an opportunity for the players themselves to collaborate in character creation!
Ans as ChronoChestnut said, check ou #dm-discussion and a whole community of us can help you.
ALSO ANOTHER TIP do a premade campaign/one shot for your fist campaign.
oh ya i love Uni and the Hunt for the Lost Horn as far as oneshots, free and a fun throwback
ookay!! thanks guys
Haii :3

Hallo
I'm so nervous- it's almost been a year since I tried to play DND
-# and failed miserably
Sorry to hear your first time was bad, hope your next D&D adventures are better!
I hope so too
I know a bit of DND stuff and have a character but I really wanna try playing with a new group!
Awesome! If you wanted feedback on the character feel free to post them here or in #character-discussion , otherwise to use this server to find a group check out the instructions in #find-a-game :)
yeah roughly the same here
just trynna get into it. the party i played with the first time turned out to be not as beginner friendöy as they claimed
Awesomesauce!
I'm doing a redesign of my character rn
Getting into a game as a beginner definitely can be rough. How much of the Basic Rules are you familiar with? Sometimes it can be hard for established players to teach new ones who know nothing, other times they’re happy to help. That being said making sure you’re at least familiar with the basics and the rules of your class can expedite your transition into a game
well ive watched a bunch of videos, live plays and ive read the latest Players Handbook
so i think i know hiw the main mechanics work but sometimes i just rather ask for confirmation than assume things
especially since all the spells and interactions can get very confusing
That’s absolutely fair. Hell a browse through #dnd-rules can give you a headache with all the semantics and niche questions
i also just got the Ultimate Adventurers Guide as a gift from my cousin. my head is smoking from all the reading
Ah I’d be careful with that one
That’s unofficial so you’d need DM approval to use any content from it
Assuming you mean the book by Sterling Vermin
yeah they use it and in the future wanna add me to their group but theyd also appreciate if i got a little bit of playing experience before that since they are in the middle of a campaign and dont wanna intereupt it for a OSA which i can understand
yeah the Handbook not guide sorry
hello
Hi
What is HP, and how do you get it? (I'm a bit lost on how to explain this topic to my party.)
Hp is the amount of health you have. It’s the amount of damage you can take before death saving throws.
that's probably way more helpful than the paragraph i was typing out lol
?tag new hp
Hit Points (HP)
Hit Points are a measure of how difficult it is to kill or destroy a creature or an object. Damage reduces Hit Points, and healing restores them. You can’t have more Hit Points than your Hit Point maximum, and you can’t have less than 0.
Your class and Constitution modifier determine your Hit Point maximum at level 1. Hit Point Dice, or Hit Dice for short, increase your Hit Point maximum when you gain a level. A creature can also spend Hit Dice during a Short Rest to regain Hit Points.
Some spells and other effects confer Temporary Hit Points, which are a buffer against losing actual Hit Points.
I really need to learn these commands
They’re a lifesaver when you’re busy
wizard, warlock, sorcerer, skills, sheet, roleplaying, rogue, ranger, proficiency, pbp, paladin, online, monk, levelup, hp, fighter, druid, dice, demo, d20, complexity, cleric, class, bg3, bard, barbarian, ac, abilities
^ All the ?tag new <entry> tags
yes, but how do you get a hit dice number to put in your character sheet?
Your level x a dice that is dependent on your class
And then your pool of hit dice grows by your class level
So a level 3 fighter has 3 d10 hit dice
So a level 3 barbarian would be 3d12 I believe.
Yep
Yep
okay so you put in just d10?
What level are they? If they’re level 1 fighter it’s 1d10.
You would note something like 1 d10
1 to indicate how many hit dice you have and d10 to indicate the dice type
so in the character sheet you put in "1d10"?
so you roll a d10 then multiply with 1?
So you just roll a d10
basically
If it was 2d10 you’d roll 2 d10s
then what?
What’s this for?
You just have 1 d10 dice that you can use for certain things that specify you can use hit dice
.. the add them together?
If it’s for health you get the max at level 1
Well, it would be a d10+constitution modifier for each fighter level after 1
So at level 1 a fighter get 10 + constitution modifier hit points and has 1 d10 hit dice
^
if hp is the amount of health the character has, how come the dice type is the health? I dont get if im just slow or what
Mechanically hit dice are used for recovering hit points on a short rest'
The hit die determines how much health you get per level, including level one.
Wait
so you roll the hit die and the number you get is the hp?
Well yes it also applies at level 1 but at level 1 you get the max
..so if i roll a d10 and get a 1.. thats my maximum hp?
And you also add your constitution modifier.
You only roll after level 1 tho
At level 1 you get the max roll
only after?
what about before then?
Yes
Hit dice are used on short rests to recover hit points. You tell the DM "I'm using x dice from my hit dice to recover <roll hit dice and add constitution modifier> hit points.
im still confused
Would an example help?
hopefully
huh??
Say you’re a level 1 fighter with a +2 to constitution.
At level 1 you’d get 12 health, as it’s the max roll of your hit die (10) + your constitution modifier (2).
At level 2 you’ll roll a d10. Say you get a 7. You’d then add (7+ constitution modifier) 9 health onto 12 and have 21 health.
Hopefully that makes sense
Examples help some much better than others in my experience, so it was good to slow down.
You get those when using specific spells or features (Aid, for example).
?
nvm
i figured it out
thanks
Well we might as well try to do hit dice now
short rests are rests that a party do for one hour, where they regain their hit dice (what it is depending on the class, and how many depending on the level). Each one restores 1 hit dice +con mod worth of health.
For example, a barbarian at level four would have 4d12. They can then expend, say, 3 hit dice to heal 3 (d12+Constitution modifier) when they take a short rest. Long rests replenish half of your hit dice.
Reading this made me confused but also smarter 🙏 /pos
Feel free to ask any questions
so does your character have the knight background Blike!!, is that what you were asking about in the rules channel?
I mean I did a redesign on my character and they are a knight I'm just asking because I know there are things like Bards, Warlocks and such I'm just confused on taht
oh so you want to know what classes might feel most like you are a knight?
fighter, i would say pally since they get horsey too
HORSEY???
Horsey!
I LOVE HORSES
How about special horsey
YES PLEASE?? HOLAY MOLAY??
Play a paladin then!
They get a special horsey at level 5
Cuz it’s magical horsey
If your DM is cool, sure!
Whooooaaa

Paladin
Smite foes and shield allies with divine and martial might
Paladins are united by their oaths to stand against the forces of annihilation and corruption. Whether sworn before a god’s altar, in a sacred glade before nature spirits, or in a moment of desperation and grief with the dead as the only witnesses, a Paladin’s oath is a powerful bond. It is a source of power that turns a devout warrior into a blessed champion.
-# Suggested Standard Array assignment
Str. 15
Dex. 10
Con. 13
Int. 8
Wis. 12
Cha. 14
Likes: Defense
Complexity: Average
Starting HP: 10 + Con. modifier
Oooo
Paladins are also extremely powerful and have support capabilities too. And they’re hard to kill.
That's definitely a knight then
They’re a great class, plus they make good backstories
holy knight, yeah. They get a protective buff aura, they get to heal with a touch, they get to do smites, etc. Regular knights still fit the Fighter class
Conviction goes crazy
Typically it's easier to ascribe that philosophy of having such deep faith or conviction in an oath, when it's a package deal with a literal deity of godly power over some kind of domain
Typically
My knight is Greek and worships Ares and Hypnos... Does that count as a holy knight?
Sure - just make sure it fits the D&D game you're playing in
But all in all, "power of friendship / pacifism" clerics and "patriotism soldier for the kingdom" paladins can definitely work
The god of war and sleep… very different ones there
But yes
if you are devoted to their service, or just have some beliefs that you could call an oath
They make people go to sleep one way or another
That is definitely true!
But yeah a great example of a Paladin following Ares (god of war) would be Oath of Conquest
"douse the flame of hope, rule with an iron fist, strength above all" is very very warmongery. Literally, Conquest.
-# He was good to women, but he definitely wasn’t the god of them at least iirc
Ooo I didn't know that
Oh definitely
-# so true though, but I do remember he is the god of women holup gimme a min
Whereas Hypnos... what's the best for a sleepy paladin...
either Ancients or Redemption would work, IMO
it definitely gets very vibes-based when you're looking at a god of sleep
Whereas for "War fighty man" you get "what's the most war fighty oath and tenets?" and you get conquest
Pfft- I see I see
-# war fighty man 😭🙏
what else comes out of "god of war" and "paladin swearing oath to god of war"?
But let's say hypothetically he's a holy knight worshipping only hypnos?
Redemption would fit great, IMO
Peace, Innocence, Patience, and Justice, better persuasion, rebuking the violent, protecting nearby people, and even their super-form is just "get even tankier and more protective and more rebuking"
Like, Redemption paladin is the peak of Pacifism and kindness as far as any subclass goes, IMO
Idk Peace cleric is a good contender
Same with life
Life of the holy is insane
Well, those are Clerics
I assumed subclasses across all classes
Well they were talking knight / holy knight, with maybe some god worship
That didn't quite seem clericy to me with the Knight-ness, nor fightery with the holy/god part
War cleric would like a word
War Cleric isn't exactly good at doing the war, like a Paladin would be.
That's my POV on it at least
I wouldn’t say it’s not good, it’s just nowhere AS good as a paladin
that is my point, the actual "go, do a war" kinds of features are given by paladin much more than cleric
Tru
-# I can't unsee the meme "Go, do crime" from that 😭🙏
-# that's the joke
-# OH MY GOD LMAO??
So, a gentle paladin knight that has a magic horsey and believes in a god? Sound awesomesauce

Awesomesauce indeed : D. Though conquest paladins aren’t so gentle.
Evil Larry paladin
Not particularly evil, but they rule with an iron fist
hi guys
Sup
Hallooo
Wahzzup
Do i need to have a dndbeyond subscription to share homebrew content in my campaigns?
I…don’t know
when do i play dnd
Once you’ve learnt the rules and found a table
a table?
A group
#find-a-game can help you find a table
We’re not allowed to say
Server rules
You’re not either
no PII in chat
well, it's not called a tabletop roleplaying game for no reason
whether it's a local, physical one in real life, or a digital/virtual/metaphorical one, 'the table' is what the game is played on. And it works for metaphorical sayings like "what's on the table"
oh my bad
Why would that information matter anyway? DnD can be enjoyed at all ages.
Well, all ages capable of not disrupting the game to the point of unplayability.
just wanted to know
True, but you get the point
Anywho, do you know the rules yet?
Wahzzup
Goooood morning afternoon evening, Nugget Dnd Player Helpline here, how can I help you today?
-# Pfft- nugget helpline
I'm kinda confused on character sheets and races
That’s a fairly common source of confusion! What part of them are you confused about?
Like how do stats work
The Race/Species is basically just a packet of features. Like how Elves have a bit of fey ancestry so they resist charm effects a touch better than humans and dwarves typically do.
a bit
Check out #learn-to-play and familiarise yourself a lil more I’d say
ok
Bigger score = bigger modifier = do better with that Ability. For example, Strength is self explanatory. Carry more, better chances to win at strength-related rolls.
The important part is that Determine Ability Scores part.
Oh thanks
-# random question, opinion on garlic bread??
Wait what are standard arrays?
Goated
-# effing delicious
A set of numbers that you can allocate to each stat
Should be outlined in here
The standard array is an array of ability scores that is considered standard. You can choose that and assign each number to whichever score you want, assigning the 6 total scores to the 6 different abilities, in whichever permutation you want.
Hmmm so are they predefined in classes
Nope, but there are recommendations
Okay
For example, it's not against the law to make a character with low constitution, it's just heavily recommended that everyone takes some constitution because it is, put simply, the "don't die" stat.
And for a class, like Barbarian, that directly benefits from it, and throws themselves into the fray, and typically makes themselves an easy target, a very good "Don't Die" stat is even more important.
Hmmm
However, some people manage to get away with extremely low of a certain score sometimes.
Anecdote: A wizard in a campaign I was in, literally named "Paper", managed to not die because they played every situation extremely defensively, so despite the fact they had incredibly low health and basically anything could kill them if they really tried, they have survived so much more than they had any right to.
All things considered, listen to what your class features are going to want, and you'll be fine.
Ok
Are we aloud to use dice cloud
hey so i have never played dnd and would very muich like too is anyone looking for new party members
We don't play here. This server has some group-finding in it, but otherwise the playing is done elsewhere.
So it comes down to whatever the group goes for.
If you’ve never played, you should learn the rules first
Better to learn the basics of swimming before jumping into the deep side of the pool
Check out #learn-to-play (particularly the free rules) and make a practice character, then get it reviewed.
Once you’ve learned enough, check out #find-a-game
i suppose their is value in that i was playing an ai dm learning some basics but it didnt seem very encompassing
Thank you so much
Feel free to ask any questions!
thank you!
AI will definitely not be very encompassing.
Language Models are infamously not good at logical consistency, and will make things up just to fill a word count and what an algorithm calculates should net 'points' for. It doesn't comprehend anything, it's a box of numbers constantly readjusting itself to maximize the number representing positive reinforcement for sounding like an intelligence.
Basically, treat it with the same level of trust as the fey of old folklore. Absolutely nonexistent. It will say all manner of things to try and get what it wants (in the code's case, positive reactions).
i see
DND essentially runs on very loose code held together with duct tape, twigs, and sheer social belief, and runs on the engine of human brains.
A language model has no hope of actually successfully navigating or mimicking that and will immediately begin to hallucinate because it doesn't have common sense, it doesn't have thinking.
So referring to humans for help is the best bet.
Well maybe not the best bet, but it's certainly a bet, which is more than can be said for the "throwing money in the shredder" that LLMs are
There are places where AI in TTRPG shines, especially those AI maps: things that aren't quite right but you don't notice it at first glance.
Hell, an "AI" can barely tell which number is higher between two values. It's a computer that has been given such an advanced algorithm it has managed to become bad at math.
Stick to homegrown human bad-at-math-ness
I think makings maps is actually something it fails especially bad at. It does not understand what an interesting map needs and places a huge amount of noise that doesn't mean anything.
My players have been using it fairly successfully for making pc portraits, though I'd prefer if they don't.
That's exactly my point. You can look at one of those AI maps of a bazaar, and in the first few seconds it superficially looks like a bazaar. But then you see stairs that lead nowhere, stalls that are on top of stalls, catwalks that float in the air, etc.
Ah, so we agree there. I wouldn't call that "shining" though.
It's unsettling. I mean it shines at being unsettling like the uncanny Valley.
Oh, you mean for the second-glance-dawning-horror aspect of impossible geometry like the five gargoyles on a square's corners
"Great at being unsettlingly wrong" sums up the generators
-# is this still newcomers if all the messages for the last 20 minutes have been non-newcomers
-# idk this feels like a dnd discussion type of deal
Doh. I gotta pay more attention to which particular channel I'm in. Anywho, newcomers avoid AI.
^
Literally an artist, I don't use ai 🙏
How does homebrew sharing work on dndbeyond? Does it need to be the DM that shares the homebrew to the campaign or can any player use homebrew and everyone else then get it too?
I'm homebrewing the backrounds and subclasses from my physical copy of the 2024 player's handbook and our DM doesn't have the book so she can't homebrew them into dndbeyond for us to use
#ddb-support can give you better guidance for using D&D Beyond!
Thanks!
I want to play DnD, but i cant play in person and it seems online is always voice only and adults only, and i cant speak because of the room above mine and sound bleeding through. Is it even possible or should i forget about it? Should add i dont have any local game stores or friends
You might be interested in play-by-post (PBP), aka text-based games!
I heard about them, but from what i can find i cant seem to find any in my timezone or age-group, and they are very few and far between.
PBP games are often asynchronous, so it's usually not worth worrying about time zones.
Also, you can look outside of this server. There are places that specialize in PBP.
I have tried looking on popular other serves and websites, but no luck. Most that i can find are paid as well unfortunately.
Where have you looked?
Roll20, a few other discord servers, D&D Beyond, and a ton of random websites and web searches
You can look through the avenues I listed in this guide I made, just to ensure you've exhausted your options: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1rjwuod1lNBM5n4X_TH2ZoqTULv53jWaVMXtrzKVboms/edit?pli=1&tab=t.0
Beyond that, you may have to hold off until your circumstances change to dive into the hobby.
Thanks, ill hold off for now (really good guide btw, good for people in regular circumstances!)
Hope you find a way to do some adventuring in the near future!
would you mind helping me create a character? open to anyone really
sure
awesome mind hoppin a vc with me to screenshare?
sure i could do that
have fun out there!
i am trying to make my character but dnd beyond is infected
yep, you'll just have to wait until the maintenance is done, or try doing it with pen and paper
ok thx
The SRD link usually still works, if you would like to look at the free rules
https://media.dndbeyond.com/compendium-images/srd/5.2/SRD_CC_v5.2.1.pdf
That’s a good place to start if you need something to do while you wait, yeah. The free “basic rules” that is on D&D beyond’s website has a little bit more content that the SRD does, so you’ll want to make sure you don’t miss anything once the site is back up. But nothing in the SRD is wrong or different from the basic rules. So it’s fine to start there if you wish
Discord and other voice apps usually have decent noise suppression. If possible noise is the only issue, just ask the GM for an audio test.
I really can't recommend pbp. It's quite hard to find a good group that actually lasts. Most of them fizzle out after a few sessions.

Hihi everyone
welcome
Hru
doing well. so what brings you to this fine discord?
Wondering I should try playing DnD
any questions so far?
Um how do I make a cleric character?
are you using the book or dndbeyond?
DnD beyond
Have you read through the basic rules yet? There's a step by step guide on character creation there:

Gwm with thirsting blade... Do I add proficiency bonus to both attacks or just 1?
Short answer: to both
Long answer:
Great Weapon Master requires two things:
- A weapon with the Heavy property
- The attack to be made as part of the Attack action.
Thirsting Blade lets you attack twice when you take the Attack action. So both attacks qualify for the second bullet of Great Weapon Master.
That's a great explanation thank you. Didn't know if the second attack from thirsting blade was seen as separate from the attack action
The wording it's using is quite deliberate.
With that feature, you can attack twice with the weapon instead of once when you take the Attack action on your turn.
After all, if it wasn't the Attack action, the feature would need to specify some other action cost.
Any chance someone could check over my character please? I feel like my ability stats are quite high but not sure if it's actually correct. I can't work out where my +8 to charisma is coming from lol
Yeah, the stats definitely don't follow the standard array or point buy. If you don't have a DM yet, I'd use standard array. You can select it as an option on the DDB ability score screen of your character instead of "Manual/Rolled".
It's using point buy
The +8 comes from the fact that you're proficient in that save and skill, so it adds the +3 proficiency bonus.
Char is set to +12 on point buy but shows as total 20 (hence me questioning the +8 difference)
Something definitely doesn't add up with Charisma, yeah. Maybe you selected a homebrew species?
It says that goliath contributes +8, which isn't how any official species works.
I don't think so, it's just Goliath (stone)
Just checked and it's definitely normal Goliath not homebrew
I see, strange.
Maybe I did something wrong on the custom background?
I picked custom, then Background Feature: Merchant
Background Characteristics: Soldier
And added the lucky feat
I don't think that's it. This seems quite strange and I've looked at a lot of DDB sheets by now. 😅
But yeah, I'd troubleshoot it by replacing each individual part of the build and see if anything changes.
It's possible that it is a bug. DDB is known for catching them sometimes.
hello, i am new and stopping by today to try to join a group. Know that i have a character ready and would like to keep track of what story lines joined. Excited about this too.
Welcome!
This server has an lfg system. You can visit #find-a-game to read how it works.
Just a noob question. Who has used telekinesis here? It says the target should make a con saving throw but I can’t find the DC. Upon google search, I found an answer in reddit that says its a contest check?
I wanna know for sure before I bring it up to our dm. We are fighting against a dragon type and have legendary resistance.
The DC is the same as for any other spells you'd cast that have a saving throw.
Spell save DC = 8 + your spellcasting ability modifier + your Proficiency Bonus
As for the second part of your question, it depends on the rules you're using. If you use 2014, it's a contested check. If you use 2024, it's a saving throw.
Looks like it was a bug with the custom background. Switched to merchant and they seem to be calculating correctly now
I submitted a search and will wait some and then will log off for today. 🕊️
You can also reach out to folks in #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community if you see a game/group that sounds interesting.
Thank you. This shes some light to my question. We use 2024. Does it work against foes with legendary resistance?
Yes? Unless they have a feature that prevents it (I can't think of any creature that has a straight up "nope" against it).
The creature with the legendary resistance can use that resistance to succeed the save though so be aware of that.
I used portent against the dragon but was countered by legendary resistance
Yeah, while Portent replaces the total, the Legendary Resistance overrides the result
But you made the dragon burn a legendary resistance - that's not nothing
Alright then I will leave it as it is. Our session got interrupted after my turn because of dnd maintenance 😭 but thanks all for clearing it up.

Hello, I'm new and trying to join a group. I only have Discord and Fight Club 5 to play DnD. I only played once and still learning the ropes
Good morning afternoon evening!
Good afternoon to you too
Just here to pop in and say hi, or do you have any questions? Happy to help if you do have any.
Also love the Pfp
Do I have to have Roll20 or DnD beyond to play? I don't have a laptop so its harder if I have to have those.
Also thank you!
Nope! I havent ever touched Roll20 personally, and I only use DnD beyond for character sheets.
Tbf I mostly play irl, but I know that there are some ways to play online without it.
I played only once before and we only used discord vc and Fight Club 5. I was hoping to get on a session that doesn't primarily use Roll20 or DnD beyond to play on pc. But I don't know how. I'm sorry
Why are you apologising?
It depends on your GM. They'll tell you what you need.
I'm sorry force of habit
…
Canadian by any chance?
No, I'm from Indonesia
Oh okay thank you
If you don't have a laptop, it may be just a bit harder to find an online game. But keep at it, there are some VTTs that work on mobile too
And some GMs don't use VTTs at all
Oh okay. When I look for a dm or party do I look in looking for player or looking for dm? Because right now its just me at the moment.
#find-a-game helps
Personally, I don't think GMs look at the #looking-for-dm channel that much
You may have better luck in #looking-for-players
Okay alright. Thank you both for helping 👍

Is it bad to only have chromatic orb as your damage dealing spell as a level 3 wild magic sorcerer?
This is not counting cantrips btw
Nah that’s fine
I don’t see an issue with it at least, chromatic orb is pretty good
Alrighty
@hearty blaze is web a good spell?
Would you take it or hold monster?
Person i mean, hold person
Alrighty, thanks!
Hi, Level 5, PoTB, GWM warlock with Cha +3. For my pact weapon attack using True Strike, would these damage numbers be correct?
Greatsword - 2d6 + 3
True strike - 1d6 from cantrip upgrade
GWM - +3
Total - 3d6 + 6
I’m assuming 2024?
yeah
dndB says true strike damage is 1d6+3 Damage but I assume the +3 is already taken in to account on my greatsword numbers because of PoTB
Damage looks about right
GWM damage only works with the attack action. True Strike is a magic action 🤔
Apart from that
ahh thats a good point
So 3d6+3
You dont have the 2 attacks invocation?
Is better than true strike
And you already attack with CHA with pact of the blade
I guess that's the distinction between the "attack action" and making an attack
Yes
because true strike says "you make one attack " but that's not an "attack action"?
oof
I was gonna say btw, you couldn’t chosen any other cantrip?
What does true strike give you
Plus, you can get extra attack
And GWM applies two times with extra attack
(Thirsting blade iirc)
yeah it was my mistake on the technicality of attack action... I have thirsting blade but thought it meant I could essentially do true strike twice
Yeah Valor Bard and Bladesinger too
Just doing a one shot and trying to get the best output 😄
Sort of. Those are still casting true strike only once, but they combine it with the Attack action.
any tips/changes would be appreciated - https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/144706172
What you have going with Thirsting Blade and GWM is already plenty.
Could throw in a hex if you haven't already.
Im going to try it with AoA
Why not equip your armour?
because of AoA
those two aren't mutually exclusive though
You can use AoA with armor 🙂
yeah but I want to get hit right
You'll still get hit plenty I suspect.
And once AoA runs out, you don't want to just be a sitting duck.
It’s better for them to miss than you take damage and they take 5
15?
Ope forgot
But yeah what Deva said, once it runs out you’re a person with 12 AC and a d8 health dice
we're allowed to add any common non-magical items
Still better btw
And you know of the interaction between AoA and False Life, right? That False Life can essentially "refill" parts of AoA?
yeah and fiend
but can't stack so have to take the highest at the time
indeed
it's a halloween one shot and I think the dm is going to try and kill us anyway 😄
he's adding a madness mechanic apparently
he gave me the bracers in my inventory but I've asked to swap it for an enspelled (with AoA) greatsword... waiting on an answer 😄
Well, there's an issue where Armor of Agathys isn't a valid school to be bound into an enspelled weapon.
Now enspelled armor, that's a thing for abjuration
ahhh thats a very good point
y'might wanna send that addendum

Hello!
My name is Lexie and I am sort of brand new to DnD. I was aware of it when I was younger, but didn't end up actually getting into it until BG3 and when my partner introduced me to Critical Role. I am not necessarily a player other than when I play bg3, but I just wanna know some table rules/etiquette that could be unspoken. I'd appreciat it!

Welcome! The best place to start is with the free Basic Rules, linked in the bot post above. As you're giving them a read, we'll be happy to answer any specific questions you have here in this chat.
As for unspoken rules, here's a few tips:
- Remember that unlike BG3, you're not the main character. Help uplift your fellow players so that everyone has fun in the spotlight!
- You're not playing against your DM. It's all one big collaborative storytelling experience.
- Don't be afraid to fail forward. If something goes wrong, try to make the most out of that failure to better the scene.
Okay! I am guessing the "Player Guide" book would help a lot too? my partner has it on our bookshelf aha
Yup, the Player's Handbook is a great tool. If you prefer to read digitally, the Basic Rules have all you need to play the game and get started as well.
ouhh perf, thank you!
I shall make my way back once I have any questions and to learn more :]
I’d def also watch some vids on the classes (if needed ofc
)
Keep in mind that BG3 is homebrewed
And is abundant with all sorts of magical items that is normally never seen in a dnd campaign unless the drop rates are buffed drastically
And so in an actual dnd campaign, resources are more scarce and there's a lot of minor things like language and proficiencies that matter more, so it isn't just a damage race like in bg3 where high damage = good class
Hello everyone 👋
I have some initiation to dungeons and dragons.
However, there are a few problems...
Not only do I live way too far from anything, I also have an inconsistent schedule for work...
That means I can't play in person, and I can't play only via calls since I might get called to work at any moment.
Do you have any tips?
If timing is your biggest problem, maybe consider Play by Post games. They're text only games, so they're much more forgiving about timing.
How do they work?
I actually had a question about this, how many magic items would you say you even normally get in tabletop campaigns?
There is a section and table for that in the new DMG
Hello everyone!,
it's my first time playing D&D and i'm going to become a DM for a group of new players. So i wanna ask, is it better to draw smaller detailed maps like towns and dungeon maps physically or use a digital fantasy map software like Inkarnate or Wonderdraft?
Depends on the length and average level of the players
Assuming your campaign ends before level 15, I'd say around ~6?
Excluding common items, consumables and story items
Personal preference
Meanwhile I was fully decked with uncommons and rares when I was like level 4-5 in bg3...
I do both
?tag new pbp
Apologies, I was away. Check out the article above!
No worries!
Oohh, okay! So is it better to make all the maps before the campaign starts or progressively as it goes on? since the world map has a lot of smaller locations in it...
I'm looking at a solo adventure and it says "AC 6", what does that mean?
Acrobatics check?
AC usually refers to Armor Class, which is how hard it is to hit a creature. However, I can't think of a single creature with an AC as low as 6. That's practically non-existent. Is this solo adventure... for Dungeons and Dragons, or another Tabletop RPG?
It's a training dummy so it makes sense then
AC means Armor Class, not Acrobatics.
You need to roll high enough on your attack to meet or beat 6 to hit.
So that's the hit/DC tab on DND beyond?
thats your modifier/saving throw dc
I'm so lost
No not exactly. On D&D Beyond the HIT/DC
So what do I roll? A d20 with no modifiers?
Under your attacks, yes. Roll that first, then damage if it beats the AC
It should tell you if you’re on Beyond what the modifier is
Yes on D&D Beyond you can see your attack modifier next to each weapon/spell under your Actions tab.
That modifier is what you add to your d20 roll when you’re attacking.
Or if you have the dice roller enabled, you just click it and it will digitally roll attacks
Only when they're needed. Don't overprep
Well, what kind of roll are you trying to make? A weapon attack?
Yeah with a dagger on a training dummy
Ok, is the dagger equipped on your Beyond sheet? Go into inventory and make sure it’s selected
So if I understand correctly I have to roll higher than 6 with a d20 to hit and then roll a D4+1 to see the damage
It is
then it should state your modfier
Then yes. With a Dagger, which is a melee weapon, you roll one d20 and add two things: your Proficiency Bonus plus your Ability Score Modifier.
At level 1, every character's Proficiency Bonus is 2.
For most melee weapons, the Ability Score Modifier you'd add is your Strength modifier. However, Daggers have the Finesse property, which allows you to use your Dexterity modifier instead, if you want.
If the number you roll against this hypothetical 6 AC training dummy is 6 or higher, you successfully hit it.
Ohh, okay thank you for the tip!

The short version of D&D is this:
- The DM describes the situation.
- Each player describes what they want their character to do.
- If needed, dice are rolled (to determine success/failure).
- The DM describes the results. Repeat the cycle.
any DM wants to help me homebrew a character? or a player who knows how to help new people?
homebrew? this channel is for newbies, and those two generally dont work together
Just to confirm, when you say "homebrew a character", what do you mean? Do you mean just build your own character using the rules?
well I looked through all the races and classes. I couldn't find one I would enjoy playing as in parties so I want to make a balanced one what DMs would be able to work with
well make something what works out. since the current one doesn't quite work- it was too op and other players were sceptical
Ah, then yes. That is homebrew. I would highly recommend avoiding homebrew as a new player.
THIS
-# ok...
If you're still looking for homebrew options regardless, we have a channel for that: #homebrew
But I do offer that with heavy, heavy caution.
also, what was your idea for a character? maybe we can guide you to an existing race
I am confused. Im a level 3 druid. How many spell slots do I have?
Cause I dont get how it works fully
well basically a dragon, not a dragonborn or anything near it, not humanoid. I looked through ways I could make it work with the rules like a sorcerer or wild form of a druid but both are off by the base. a medium sized well if you see my tag it basically says it all...
Thankfully, there's a whole table that tells you exactly what spell slots you have at each level!
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-classes#DruidFeatures
Let us know if you still have questions afterwards.
it's just that I don't want it to be too much and by any of the normal rules or what I have found it's really hard to play as any kind of a creature-
Ah yes, DnD assumes you're playing a humanoid shaped creature. It's not really a game designed around being monstrous or very large (for very long).
well it would be slightly bigger than a horse for most times and using things like amulets or at lower levels the character would be smaller like at level 1 a hatchling and at level 15 it has grown to maximum size of slightly larger than a horse-
Yes, see, that's just simply not something most DMs will be very comfortable accepting from a player. Especially a newer player building a level 1 PC.
also I think it wasn't that much about the size but balance to the game. I guess it's just that I need to find a good DM for that or just use something normal and ignore the dream...
"Larger than a horse" is Large to Huge in size. There are quite literally no player options that allow a player to permanently be that large, because of all the headaches it causes for gameplay.
I think rather than hanging onto this idea of being a dragon (even if it does sound cool), you and your table might benefit more in the long run by trying to design a more classical DnD character.
could it be played as technically in the size of a humanoid but everything else still custom made?
If you're starting to design a dragon that's the size of a human, why not just play Dragonborn? You might even be able to convince your DM to allow you to look like a dragon if you use all the default statics and abilities of a Dragonborn.
is there somewhere i can view how many spells you're able to add to your spellbook as a wizard per level

Press the blue “Wizards”
is there like a formula for it?
You get 6 spells at level 1, 2 spells every level thereafter. So 8 total spells at level 2, 10 total at level 3, and so on.
Y=2x+6 if you will
Y being spells you get from the spell book and x being your level AFTER level 1
That's not right at all, though? 8 (spells at level 2) does NOT equal (2x2+6).
I would learn to love more about how to play and the rules, and hopefully get connected with a fun group that meets virtually! So excited to play and get started.
Works with all classes?

Sorcerer
Wield magic innate to your being, shaping the power to your will
Sorcerers wield innate magic that is stamped into their being. Some Sorcerers can’t name the origin of their power, while others trace it to strange events in their personal or family history. The blessing of a dragon or a dryad at a baby’s birth or the strike of lightning from a clear sky might spark a Sorcerer’s gift. So too might the gift of a deity, exposure to the strange magic of another plane of existence, or a glimpse into the inner workings of reality. Whatever the origin, the result is an indelible mark on the Sorcerer, a churning magic that can be passed down through generations.

What’s so high complexity?
Probably the meta magic and the difficulty to change spells.
Not too bad tbh
Probably the spells for the character and balancing them…
Knew it
Cuz wizard is “average”
“Well above average”
Casters have to manage spells and how to prep them and how many they get at which level and spell slots. It adds a little more complexity to a character
All the classes are perfectly learnable tbf

Nice choice!
-_- I will-
Great premise too!
I have a friend who is too shy to type in here. She wants to know if she can make a half elf and half orc.
Only if the DM allows it.
And let her know that we’re welcoming enough, and should come here if she’s comfortable!
They would pick the species they want the characteristics from but describe themselves as half-orc/half-elf.
She also wants to know if there are fairy races
Yes there is
There is!
I told her, but she wanted me to speak for her lol
Well if it’s her wish, I’ll respect it
Which races are fairies?
“Fairy” is a species
It's it's own species: https://www.dndbeyond.com/species/814913-fairy

That’s pretty much it
Not usually, but it's impossible to say what's true for every game out there.

Oh okay. I tried to explain to her that there's a bunch of different type of tabletop games that are similar to D&D, but I don't think I did a good job explaining like that. I was hoping she would come in here and ask y'all herself lol

TTRPGs are make-believe with rules. Different rules=different games. And usually different genres too.
Thank you. The term I was looking for was tabletop RPG. I didn't know how to describe it, so I just kept saying D&D and similar things.
i'm looking to be a necromancer or something, aside from arcana what wizard skill proficiency should i pick
Honestly just whatever you feel fits. Maybe religion, history or intimidation
i am finaly done with my character and learning few of the rules what should i donow
Look for a group to play with!

oh thx
oh also, can i choose a cantrip that's like necromancy even if i dont know anything about necromancy?
if not, what cantrips can i choose?
You can pick any that are on your class spell list
The options will vary depending on your class. Druid and Wizard both have cantrips but the options for both are different.
wizard
also im using dnd beyond for it
Necromancy is just a school of magic, and you're generally not limited in schools unless otherwise specified
btw, please turn pinging on in the reply for me
So as long as the spell is on your class' spell list, you can pick it
You don't need to ping me each time
yeah but i go onto different servers
ok?
Then you'll go by the Wizard spell list and the cantrips 🙂
What’s a good iPhone app for character sheets?
To make or host?
I'd say D&DBeyond, though the character creator is a lot better on desktop.
heyy
Hello
Welcome!
@slim copper @winged plover
Please avoid pinging folks not involved in the conversation and/or pinging when not necessary (e.g. person is already participating in the discussion so doesn’t really need to be pinged). Thanks!
Which dnd book grants the winged tiefling variant?
Mordenkainen’s Tome of Foes; it’s not in print anymore
Is there a link to it in the DnD beyond marketplace, I've typed that in but the two books that show for digital are not that
No; it’s Legacy content so you can’t buy it anymore
Man that sucks, but alright thank you
That's not true
Winged tiefling is in SCAG
Tome of Foes had different tiefling bloodlines instead
My bad

Damage depends on the weapon used. Damage type is said in the attack description or weapon as well. Same for spells. You now just need to figure out if the target has resistances or vulnerabilities and modify the damage accordingly.
Ok so I understand how to get a hit with AC, but how do u calculate the damage done
If you roll a 16 and the AC is 15 then how do you know how much damage is done? Is it a simple 3+strength stat?
What weapon was it that hit? A shortsword? That is one D6 slashing damage + strength or dexterity modifier, depending on which the player chose.
Proficiency does NOT apply to the damage roll.
damage done is listed in the weapon's stats or the monster's attack's stats. you seem to be asking about if a player character is doing it, so like a mace does 1d6, plus your strength modifier (+3 in your example)
Roll a 4 and add a 3 from strength for 7. The target takes 7 slashing damage.
Ok so assuming it’s a physical damage
And you roll a 4
This is a seperate roll from the AC right
Attack roll is to determine IF the attack is successful.
Damage roll which you are doing now is seperate and only happens once the attack hit.
Ok thank you
weapons and monster attacks list the type of damage they deal. this type is referenced by some features, or resistance and voulnerability. my mace example does bludgeoning damage.
AC is not a roll at all. It's a value that comes from the creature's defenses.
And how do you decide if you use dexterity or strength
That depends on the weapon and the character/player.
for a melee weapon, use strength (weapons with finesse can use Dex), and ranged weapons use dexterity.
So will the weapon state whether u use dexterity or strength or does the character themselves make that
Ohhh ok
Thrown weapons do NOT count as ranged weapons by the way. They are melee weapons that you can just throw too.
I hated when my DM made me use dex for a javelin when I was a barbarian.
Ok thank you
important distinction to make
Also is there a template for monster and npc sheets
And how do I roll monster attacks
I recommend you google roll20 weapons.
It will list all weapons in the official game, their damage dice, and if they are ranged or finesse.
the SRD has plenty if you don't have the monster manual, need a link?
Monster attacks are always listed in the monster card.
Please
God I have so much reading to do
monsters start on p 254 it says
there are "monster" statblocks for npcs like guards and captains too
Thank u
If you look at frozen sick, the book, you will sometimes see a highlighted word referring to an enemy found in a location. You click that word and it brings you to the DnD Beyond monster card for that monster, showing you the stats you need to know to roll their actions.
I do not want to spoil so I cannot be more concrete than that.
Alright so now if there’s not anything else you guys think I should know I’m gonna finish reading the first forum, read the entirety of Frozen Sick and see if it’s good or if I’m doing the other starter, and then I’m reading that forum
Remember only to focus on your goal tomorrow. You want to run Frozen Sick. Go look at the first monster card of that book. Save a screenshot, take a phone picture, whatever you need. I write them down on paper myself most of the time on a little notebook.
Ok ok, and does it outline how far you’ll get first session
You then have the note or screenshot tell you that attack YZ has the attack bonus +5 to the D20 and deals D8+4 damage of x type.
It does not. That's why I asked for the session length.
I do not want to specify if I think you will reach combat since that's a spoiler.
Ok ok
For discussion of frozen sick, either the thread for that adventure or messages with someone.
The attack bonus is to get past the AC right
#1029842015397097562 I think this is the right channel for talk about the module you will be running tomorrow.
I am not 100% sure but I think so because there is none for specifically Frozen Sick and it's part of Netherdeep.
I would ping you there but can't as it's a thread and you aren't in it yet.
what is d&d stage for?
Server events. So far it's been interviews with designers who worked on particular projects.
oh okay, then will wait for the next server event or set of events.
Hellooooo I just started playing d&d if there is any new player campaigns being started let me know if youre looking for players 🙂
Hello!
hello people I would like some help determining if my character sheet is good enough yet
it prob still needs some work but id just like some tips

Hi! Check the friendly bot to get started on the LFG channels. Idk if anyone is doing a newbie specific campaign, but I daresay most groups are new player friendly
Yeah, if you have a link or something to share it, feel free.
is it fine to put it directly into this chat room or should i dm it to u?
Pretty sure just dropping the link here is fine.
I'm getting an error. Have you set it to public?
Hi! I'm very new here. Just create my first character and I want to join a game. Just for trying the D&D world
Oh I see it now, I'm pretty sure it was a me problem, lol
lol dw
It looks good so far.
Looks like you're short a skill. You get two from monk, two from your background, and you should get another two from your species, but it looks like you have overlap there since you chose intimidation, and you already have that from Soldier
Did you roll these stats?
Ah, cool. I was just wondering because they're a little on the low side.
A lot of groups will have you use a standard array (or the comparable point buy option). It standardizes things and makes it a lot easier.
Groups that roll ability scores will very often have you do it together as a group, as a part of session zero.
ok i changed the intimidation to persuasion would that fit?
If you think it fits, yeah.
(Though I think something like perception might be more useful for you)
Esp. since monks are typically good at Wisdom skills as it's one of their favored scores.
Other than that the only thing you're really missing is starting inventory
yea im waiting for when i eventualy get into a game and then i would ask the dm abt what i can have
thanks for the help btw @wide flame
That parts actually pretty easy for a level 1 character. Each class tells you what you can start with in the starting equipment section of the class.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/2190880-monk
And your background also gives you a couple things
ahhh ok
ill get to that in the mornin
i gotta get to work tomorrow
so its night night for me
Though you're right, a DM may have you start with additional or different stuff.
Right on, glad I could help
I just joined this server which text chat would I lfg in
It's all there in #find-a-game
Make sure you read the rules there carefully.
Dms hunt for players in #looking-for-players
Ok thank you!! ive never played d&d before so by newbie im like literally a newbie. Ive played in a campaign for like an hour and thats it
thanks for your help!!
Can someone explain 2d8 for me
You roll two 8-sided dice and add them together.
Thank you
Ye no prob.
Here's the deeper breakdown on how dice and dice notation works
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game#Dice
Thank you thank you
Can anyone teach me how to use roll20 🤣 😭
Roll20 has its own communities that can help
I've never played DND ever idk what I'm doing at all
Want some help getting started?
Yea
Check out #learn-to-play , and ask us if you have any questions. We’ll go from there.
So where do I find a game
Online
I have a couple dice but no DND dice if that works idk
You should learn the rules first, but #find-a-game is what you’re looking for
You can use online dice
I mean I got real dice but yk there low I think my max is a 8
You’re still missing the 10,12 and most importantly 20
Dang
I have like a bunch of dice tho
Can't I roll like 6 dice if it can add up to 20
No, wdym?
I have like 6 dice
I was wondering if I can roll like 2 dice or something and just count each number and then add them up
Can’t, cuz that skews the probability
Oh
For example rolling 2 d 10’s makes it impossible to roll a 1 and increases the chances of getting a higher number
Oh oki
Dice aren’t that expensive either, plus online it’s somewhat common to roll purely online in front of the group to prevent cheating
Or to just roll online
There are digital dice too so I wouldn't worry about it. VTTs like Foundry and Maps also have dice rollers
Ok but how do I start even
Learn the rules, then find a game at #find-a-game
No, most follow the same set of rules. There may be house rules, or differences in what’s allowed, but at least 95% of the rules in each game are the same with the version of DnD they’re playing in.
Ok
I mean I understand a little bit about it
You role dice and make decisions and you have like a stat board thing
That’s the very bare foundation of the game, yes
I don't understand tho how do the stats coralate to the dice roll
Each skill scales off a stat by adding a modifier on top of the original roll. The better the stat, the bigger the modifier.
Oki
It also adds a proficiency bonus if your character is proficient in the skill
DnD beyond might help ya
#learn-to-play It's all there
I was about to say, I told you to read through this earlier
What's DND beyond
A website that gives info and has a character creator
Oh oki
Do I have to buy anything to play
Cuz I'm looking and there's a lot of stuff I can buy
Read the channel
