Ill see
I don’t use the app so idk
Big problem
So I downloaded the pdf file no problem
But I checked my equipment and nothing there
Yeah you should’ve done that before
Try again maybe? Sounds like a glitch.
Well send the the sheet to #character-discussion and we’ll see if it’s good for the other parts
ok i sett up a lookin for now
Yeah please keep any D&D game organizing to the Looking For Game channels please as it’s off-topic outside of there. Thanks!
Ok
This is frustrating my stuff wont work
whats upp?
Important to note is that you can't upload your sheet here as a pdf. If you want to share it, set your character public and share the url.
Oh whys that?
As a very large and public server, allowing media upload has probably too many bad implications to make it worth the benefits.
Ah fairs. Makes sense
I managed to fix it, link is in character discussion now
is dragonborn a good class?
It's a species! And yeah, they're awesome.
whats a good like class for them?
Anything can fit, but I've seen people play them as barbarians, paladins and fighters.
I’ve also seen clerics, rogues, sorcerers and whopadeee they fit with everything
Being a Dragonborn is too cool to be secluded to a few classes
All species fit all classes
dragonn
Hello! I'm new to DND and this server and would like to know if there's a channel where I can find a group to play with
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
As the bot post above explains, the #find-a-game channel has instructions for this process. The simple explanation is that we have "looking-for" channels, but you cannot directly post in them. You can use a server bot to fill out a form, then a post will be generated for you based on your answers in the form. Or you can browse through the posts that are there, and use the response thread to reach out to any groups that sound interesting to you
I am thinking of multiclassing my first ever character which is a warlock into a blood hunter how many levels would you recommend putting into blood hunter? Also he is great old one patron subclass
Might wanna try in #character-discussion or #optimization
Multiclassing is not really a newcomer topic (And generally not recommended if you don't know why you're multiclassing in the first place)
OK, I have a solid group of 5 people and we all understand character sheets, what else should I try to learn and if possible does anyone have any video recommendations?
try and give the free rules a read, or check out this vid from ginni di https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hNNBjVmNbQI\
Thanks I'll give them a look over
Hey y'all, how do i purchase the Tasha's Cauldron of Everything on DnD Beyond. I'm trying to get Circle of Stars and I'm unsure how to integrate it on the website
I'm a lil stuck
buy it in the marketplace, for more answers i advise going to #ddb-support
thanks!
Does anyone know an app to design a character and if there is a website with sessions I wanna play
Thank you much appreciated

@deft kite check out the basic rules above and ask any questions you have
ok
I'm gonna try dming for a campaign with some lads I know but most of them are probably gonna cancel last second or not attend so my antisocial goofball of a human being will have to get other people from school to play
Well that sucks
Does your school have a library?
Maybe ask to collaborate with them
Like what? Put up posters
I don't think setting up clubs over here is the same as you have
No I don't think student-run clubs are a thing at my school
But I've gotten stuck with a guidance counselor for some problems so I can ask
Hello, I'm new to D&D and I dont know who to ask. I drew my character (inspired by a few of other characters) and I need advice, is it fine, what should I change etc. Where should I ask?
find a group is annoying since its either when i can not play due to persoanl shit or its already full
If it’s for art you go maybe to #dnd-arts-and-crafts , if it’s for anything else character related go to #character-discussion
Okay, thank you so much
You could definitely still try and go around asking for it
I'll have to wait a week since break just started
Does anyone have any tips on where to start on learning how to DM? My friends want to play but can't find one so I'm trying to learn it myself 🌚
Same
No tag newdm found.
Communicate with your players
Respect your players
Put passion into the game
Don’t overprep
Expand your vocabulary
Show, not tell (and use descriptive language that talks into all senses)
Have fun, no stress, and COMMUNICATE
Have a session zero
You don’t write a story, your party lives through one. Done prepare tales, prepare scenarios.
Try to know more than your players
COMMUNICATE
These are the overall tips I use
?dmtips
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
Yeah sums up how I started dnd
Question... Me and my friends wanna play DND but we're jack broke as high schoolers T-T is printing like 2d cutouts stuck in a cardboard disc a good alternative?
You can spend a whopping 0 bucks and play dnd
Eh?
That’s more than me
There are free rules, and google is free
Free basic D&D rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
Oh thanks
You can also use online dice, and as you said just print out whatever you need/ make it yourself
Ohh ok thanks 👍😁
i finally got my first set of dice
well i got 6 set of dice
my first 5 came and now im waiting for my 6th
i also got the players handbook !
You can also spend as much as you like, like Toaster. Both are completely valid choices.
Noice
The beginning of a dice goblin era, i can smelll it
lol yeah dice are just so cool looking
yeah they are. wait did u just say crunchy
if your talking about candy dice, reasonable
regular dice? also reasonable lol
I said what i said
You get it
welp time to go off on learning more abt DnD
Have you learned how to make a character, basic ability checks, short/long rests, modifiers, core gameplay, classes and combat?
i learned a little bit on character sheets. ik what classes are and a little on combat. what are short/log rest and mods? might have to do a bit more research on that
I'll keep those in mind! I feel like the most fun part will be writing the story and how the characters are gonna interact with the world around them
I'm mostly clueless on how to manage battles and items and similar stuff as im also new to dnd in general
Thx!! ❤️
Worldbuilding is certainly a part of DM'ing and can be very fun
I should start with the rules I suppose
Yup
Short rest is basically an in-game rest for your character, partially healing them
Long rest is a full 8-hour in-game rest, fully restoring HP and spell slots and such
Short rests are rests that a party do for one hour, where they regain their hit dice (what it is depending on the class, and how many depending on the level). Each one restores 1 hit dice +con mod worth of health.
Long rests heal to max, take 8 hours and recharge half your hit die
Different features also replenish during short and long rests
Then again, depending on race, long rest can be halved
is it always hard to find groups for d&d?
It's quite common for it to take a while yes
The DM to player ratio is skewed, and factors such as time zones and specifications make it difficult.
yea thats kinda true
my DM is one of my friends and he’s basing our campaign off of a game and of course I don’t want him to spoil it to me but he’s telling us not to choose a class to start and that we are gonna be switching classes on the fly or something like that and stats are gonna be switched around a lot. Should I be worried or just go along with what my DM says?
how much does your friend enjoy seeing people in pain?
Wait wtf is that
im guessing its gonna be smth like dragon dogma due to the changing classes thing
Is this a one shot or a full on campaigns
Ya we also have two people who have never even touched dnd
Full on campaign
is ther a spot?
I’m also a player so we’re capped out at 3
oh lord u beeter pray he has some mercy or yk gotta get creative
Respectfully tell your DM that that concept is not recommended at all, and ESPECIALLY not when 2 thirds of the players haven't touched dnd
oh alright
what could go wrong
everyone loves a little pain or yk more than a little
nah its cool
This would be a cool one or two shot idea, but a full campaign? No.
the idea seems hilariously evil
He’s ripping the concept from the full game
And disturbingly indifferent to player agency
think like a dm and cosider the heaps and heaps of pain u may inflict on ur players when they try to make a meta team
ergh.
can i know what game is it?
He won’t tell me
well better pray
Yaaaa
im a little interested tho what character did u make?
I made a green plasmoid druid that loves nature n stuff
Who's gonna have his entire class removed
plasmoid?
Slime person
Ye
ohh
cant u just turn urself to anything already as a slime person?
or litterally have any weapon by freezing ur body parts
Kinda
You're still slime, but kinda
well im guessing its pretty thick slime with multiple living organisms making the whole thing
No its just one
so like wouldnt u be able to kill smn from the inside by forcing some of ur own into them and then freezing it or yk doing other fun and gory stuff
Search it up
Unfortunately probably not
whats the fun in that i want to see what ur guys idea on it
hmm
I haven't made a plasmoid character yet
im not a villain but the plasmoid abilities would eitehr make for a gory edgelord or a silly little guy
I genuienly have never seen an edgelord plasmoid but i kinda like it
Amorphous
Natural Resilience
Shape Self
these three skills litterall are so evil
Yeah im not trusting
i mean u are literally able to squeeze anywhere and have a high resistance to poison and acid and and practically any weapon
Have you told him you want to just play the character you created?
Ask him if its mandatory to switch
ykw maybe praying for one god isnt enough pray for all of them atp
Most oozes don't like the cold.
In earlier editions cold things repelled gelatinous cubes
imma be so fr rn a plasmoid sorcerer or mage sound like a devious idea like u can electrecute enemies by sprinkeling iron into urself or slashing them from inside by freezing ur part or even burn them by adding alchohol or any burning liquid in there
can u not freeze some of ur part and sacrafice life for it?
I think that would hurt as much as a normal human doing that
can u regain the material ur made out of aftrer long rests?
Presumably yes
now hear me out
get inside smn stomach and then just freeze it
even if u live with 1hp
if there is no more enemies u should be okay\
then again the rest is up for the style of the campaing
Or possess them by flooding their veins with ur slime and make them brutally gut themselves alive
its it more rpg or roleplay
Do an ant man and wild shape into a hadrosaur from the inside
see ther vision
guys made we are the bad guys
i think he forseen what ur planning to do
😭
Sometimes you guys make us confused how evil you can be
Nyehehehehheeh
yooo ur a dm?
For about 4 years
holy god
I've written a book and helped write 2
how fun is it to break smn who is tring to "win d&d" by making a brocken stupid build
omg thats so cool
One time I had a bandit break their wand
i want to write a book but i dont got the writing or linguistic abilities for now
thats what i love to hear
I’m writing a book
I was a paleo consultant for 2 books and the first d&d supplement I made is for apemen cryptids to include in your games
It’s not very good and it’s abt space horror but I’m only 13 so whatever
The apemen one has a tf2 reference in it
Hi
hallo
Yello
Hello friend of hatsune miku v1
btw @lucid topaz if i as a bard use magic hand to take a missed arrow and stabbed an enemy with it will u consider it
Darn it i cant send the gif of v1 and Hatsune miku
that exists?
Mage hand? You cant move it fast enough to either catch the arrow or to make an attack with it
Do you guys know any groups on discord that need players?
what if it was already there waiting for the arrow yk pre prepared counter measure for failure?
looking for one aswell
The hand itself couldn't move fast enough to intercept the arrow.
i see what u mean
It's hard to find groups that accept new people.
its hard to find a group at all
I’d be willing to be a party with y’all if we get a dm
Frfr
I'm sure you'll find a dm
I can do two campaigns at once… gulp
we just need a DM
broski one of those campaigns is hell reincarnate
Ehhhh itll be fineeee
I can make a group to host are sessions in
I got a one shot tomorrow but we're not looking for new players
If y'all want
im intrested but before that we should talk times
lets plan ahead yk
It involves beavers and a baryonyx
I’m free most Friday’s and or Wednesdays
im gmt+1 and free always at 5pm till 10pm or 11pm
Also if you are confused pc brahim yes dinosaurs are canon in dungeons and dragons albeit only within chult
Sure
too early ill be studying at that time
Ok
lets goooo
How abt 1 pm ET
The dinosaurs also got an afterlife and a god.
would u mind if i could join in ur next campaign or one shot?
Same
I'm sorry the group is full.
Also I am assuming you are a minor we are all adults
i just turned 18
I dgaf I need a group
i think its them who mind
Yk what I think imma js stick to my hell campaign…
???
Gl y’all
Thx
Gotta help the other two make characters…
Ok
I'd recommend the 3 best beginner classes:
Barbarian
Fighter
Rogue
wait i just realized that et is 5 hour behind
Hey yall this is the wrong channel. Organise groups in DM’s.
Our dm wants us to start without one cuz we’re switching classes throughout the story…
I'm just here explaining basics
Organise a group in DM’s or in a lgf thread, not here
Thx
probably for the best, that campaign seems like hell
We do need more DM's in the community tbf
seems? nah bro IT IS hell
Lolll
It'll be fun trust
Well prolly find one
Good luck with that then, hopefully yall find one soon
sadly enough i have no memory so sadly i cant and as creative as i could be sometimes as i said before i lack the linguistic and writing skills
We can always learn skills, and you can write down notes to remember
Just dm and have a dmpc
Have you tried being a DM?
Ya
How'd it go?
Assuming you know the rules...
Grab a pre-written adventure, do some reading/watching (I'd recommend the Quickstart Guide, the DM section of the Basic Rules starting here, and this Ginny Di video), and dive in!
Wow im surprised i forgot that
reading through the rules rn, this is rlly gonna help with guiding me through omg tyyy ❤️
saw that yt video in my fyp page a few weeks back too 😭
I want to be a spellcaster and be good in social situations. Is it worth being sorcerer since their modifier is charisma, or would simply choosing a background that lets me get proficiency in persuasion and deception be sufficient? Choosing a class that only lets you pick a few spells permanently worries me a bit as a noob
That sounds like a textbook bard!
Bards are full casters, just like sorcerers and wizards, and excel in social interactions (they’re the best in the game I believe)
Plus, you can get expertise in persuasion and deception, allowing you and your +7 modifier at level 1 to breeze through many social encounters
are bards able to switch their spells at will?
It's the permanence of the sorcerer I'm scared of. I don't know enough about how useful spells are to be confident in being stuck with them the whole campaign
i believe so then again i think just going with what seems fun or useful would work
They can change one spell per level I believe? Lemme double check
If you’re playing the 2024 5e ruleset Sorcerer gets a lot of extra spells known compared to the 2014 version. I find you usually have enough to spare a few learnt spells on ones that end up not being used much
My general advice for picking spells is to have 1 offensive and 1 defensive/utility option per spell level.
Yeah once per level you can replace a spell
is aberrant mind sorcerer good?
Yes
i was considering that for the extra spells
If that’s the case consider clockwork soul
does swapping the spells given to you through a subclass count as the one spell you can change per level?
any reccomendation for where i could find dm or dnd parties?
Btw all subclasses here give you extra spells I believe
Check #find-a-game to use this server to find a group!
Overall #find-a-game
You can’t swap out ones given by the subclass, they’re free
They’re always prepared
i do use it but it doesnt seem to be too affective for now so im looking if there are alterantives
I thought this was the case in 2014 too
huhh
Wait maybe I’m forgetting smt
2014 clockwork has extra spells, not every 2014 sorcerer subclass did though
All 2024 sorcerer subclasses do get extra spells, however
are you allowed to swap those in 2014?
Just to make sure, your campaign will be using 2014 rules then?
i think so, yeah
2014 Clockwork Soul has a specific rule on what you can swap the subclass spells for, as noted in the subclass description.
ahh. is it more powerful than aberrant?
Essentially whenever you gain a Sorcerer level you can swap a Clockwork Soul spell for a abjuration or transmutation spell that’s on the regular sorcerer, warlock, or wizard spell list
And powerful in what sense?
Hm. Initially I was very into Aberrent for the pseudo mind control. But charm person making the person hostile after the hour sounds risky
Unless I could persuade them to forgive me? Is it instantly hostile like Friends or do they just know?
It’s hard to make a truly objective judgement on subclass power since a significant part of power in D&D comes from the context of your party, DM, and adventure.
Is it cheeky to ask how a DM would rule on a spell before picking your class?
Charm Person states in the spell description that the target knows it was charmed by you when the spell ends
How an NPC reacts to that is up to the DM
And Friends is the one that makes them instantly hostile?
A DM should be comfortable answering how they would run certain rulings. Something highly contextual like a target’s reaction to a certain spell being used (e.g. Charm Person) might be unanswerable since the result could vary from NPC to NPC. A shopkeeper might kick you out, a beggar might run away, a hardened criminal might admire your gall, etc
was hoping someone could help me w my kensei monk build. should i jst send wht i have here? im using the pdf file sheet rn
If you have a link to the PDF you can share it here or in #character-discussion . Otherwise upload it to a trusted file sharing site like Google drive and post the share link to that!
Completely new. I've played RPGs, and watched some DnD playthroughs. Very interested in learning, interested in playing. Anyone willing to take on someone new or teach, please add.
*Avalible afternoons and weekends, est
Welcome! I’d have a look at #learn-to-play as well as this channel’s pins, both of which have a bunch of useful newbie links including to the free Basic Rules. I suggest making a practice character as you flip through, since it often aids the learning process. The more you learn the easier it is to get into a table as well!
Don't feel pressured to memorize everything, take it at your own pace and focus on what you want to do (e.g. no need to read every spell description, or every classes' mechanics if you don't plan on playing one)
Also feel free to ask any specific questions you have here, we’re always happy to help! :)
If you're familiar with the rules already and/or just want to jump straight into group finding check out #find-a-game to learn how to use this server to find a group
Yup I can see it just fine! Give me a second to look it over.
dang i forgot to add the weapons😭 lemme re upload this
Alright so a couple questions before I give my feedback:
- Do you know if you will be using the 2014 or 2024 5e ruleset?
- How did you generate your stats? If you rolled, did your DM approve your rolled array?
i lost my purple d6 that same day i got it :c
RIP, hope you find it!
NOOOOOO
We lost a good one
it was so pretty
i have been cleaning my living room like a freak trying to find it
rip
cant confirm the ruleset but most likely 2024 5e. sometimes the DM will add homebrew aspects so i think its upto them but cant rlly confirm. I rolled and yes they approved
I lost my d4 the first session I used it too, I know how you feel
he is also letting us pick an uncommon item to start with
Solid
the pain is real
It didn’t roll a 1 the entire session too
You’re just missing a backstory
Do you want suggestions or just to pick whatever looks cool?
yeah sadly doing this last min cuz i changed my entire character after the test run
Ope
suggestions if possible. its a villains campaign so i went for like an assassin monk
Alright so for the feedback then:
- You're missing your saving throw bonuses, skill bonuses
- You're missing a few proficiencies. Namely, those granted by your species, background, and potentially subclass (see below). You're also missing item & language proficiencies as granted by your class.
- You're missing your monk class features for levels 1-3, including your Kensei features.
- You're missing your equipment from your class and background. If you chose the gold option instead for both (and then purchased a longbow) you are missing the leftover gold.
- Your hit die are incorrect. You should have 3d8 as you're level 3 (you can write "3" on the line labelled "Total" in the same box).
- Your Passive Perception is incorrect. It should be equal to 10 + your perception modifier.
Y’know what, I should get my eyes checked. Or I need to sleep more. Somehow I forgot all of that
I kinda assumed they had that down in dnd beyond for some reason
(Which makes no sense)
Is part of your DM's homebrew a custom "Magi" class? I see it on your spellcasting page.
i was tryna fit all the features in there but the stupid sheet decided nah todays not the day and wouldnt fit everything
oh i forgot to remove that LOL, i was a homebrew class for the trial run
Ah ok just wanted to make sure haha
There’s an additional traits and features section
😭 ye thx for catching that
oh nice lemme do that
Caught one more thing. Your speed should be 40 ft (assuming you're not wearing armor or a shield) since you get the Unarmored Movement feature at Monk level 2.
ah ok
i fit most of my lvl1-3 features but kinda got full, but i put the links somewhere so i can always remember
i got the longbow from the kensei monk option. i thought it let me pick any 2 martial weapons
1 ranged and 1 short
The Kensei Weapons feature allows you to choose 2 weapons to be considered your kensei weapons, it doesn't give you the weapons outright.
ahhhhh, lemme ask my dm wht i should do abt that
If you're starting at level 3, it's not an unreasonable ask to start with your desired weapons
Ask your DM for what starting equipment yeah
Anyone willing to help a newcomer make a character sheet? I know what kind of character im looking to make. Just unfamiliar with what the 'normal' stats are.
I’m willing
Have you read the Basic Rules section on stat generation yet?
To determine stats
This should help
Also #character-discussion might be better too
Generally we recommend choosing Point Buy or Standard Array over Rolled, since the latter is only done under DM supervision to prevent cheating
^
Depends how in depth you wanna go with asking
Reading now. To be honest, I just want to play an undead necromancer. A lost "drunk" who summons companions to do mundane tasks and typically stays out of battle, again allowing his minions to do most of the work. Pretty much a lonely necromancer who lets his usually weak summons do most everything.
he said to go with the starting equip for my class, so i went with the shortsword until i look at more simple weapons. he also said its fine if i want to have my longbow as my uncommon item
idk if that's something 'normal' or 'accepted'
Kinda someone who's lost their memories with time and has become tired.
Then grab a +1 longbow
Well we can certainly arrange a necromancer
There’s literally a subclass called necromancer
The main problem is that there is no official undead species
So we either homebrew or reflavour
or maybe an elf, who feels he has lived too long, forgotten important things, and is just tired
We can certainly do an elf
do u have a link to wht it fully does? jst wanna make sure i get the right info for my sheet
You have a +1 to attack and damage rolls. Thats it
ah ok
You want an elf or a reflavoured undead? I recommend elf considering some of the options for the reflavoured undead needs DM approval, unless you’re in a game and can ask them rn.
Literally brand new, so whatever is most acceptable
Then probably elf
just looking for a race/class that has lived too long, tired, and somewhat careless
wait if imma be primarily be using my sword (or my hands) should i go for a longsword +1 instead?
The most common undead reflavoured are reflavoured warforged and reborn, which are 2014 and may not be accepted at all tables.
Then you won’t get a bow until you find one in-campaign
Up to you
@hearty blaze Added, and dm'ed
But yeah that sums up elves
Bet gimme a sec to read over it
ahh okok lemme tell my dm then
ok i think i did everything, added the ability score bounses from my race too
@wheat crystal hows this
You’ve misunderstood how proficiency works I think
You add your ability score modifier to each skill
(Which stat is based on the skill)
For skills that you’re proficient in, you add your proficiency bonus, which increases as you level up (it’s +2 rn for you)
Yeah, at that stat spread (did you roll? or just put numbers in?) your Saves would be +1, +7, +3, +2, +4, +1, in the order of STR DEX CON INT WIS CHA.
They did roll, DM was there
nice
Very good rolls
those are some very dreamy stats
Ikr
Ahhh i'll change that then
Not -1? I have an 8 in str
yeah but negative 1, plus 2, equals positive 1
Ah
or the other way, +2 for prof, -1 for strength mod, total of +1 to strength saves
So -1 + 2 = +1 strength save
+5 + 2 = +7 dex save
then you just do modifier = save for the other 4 abilities, con int wis cha
Should my wisdom be +6 then? Me and the DM miscounted and i now have 18 Dex and 17 wisdom. But cuz of my race i now have 20 dex 18 wisdom
No, your wisdom modifier is just +4, as it is a score of 18
A Monk gets Proficiency in Strength and Dexterity saving throws, so they get to add their Proficiency Bonus (PB) to those kinds of Saving Throws.
Ahh
otherwise when you make a saving throw, like a Constitution saving throw, you'll just be adding your Constitution modifier, but not proficiency since you aren't proficient in Constitution saving throws, for example
and so on, modifier for the respective type
And intitative is dex right? so i would have +5 to intiative
Hi
with 20 Dexterity, giving a +5 Dexterity Modifier, yes.
Alright
So, what do I do here?
My friends and I need a DM. We are brand new. Where do I find one?
#find-a-game or #looking-for-dm should work
Ask any questions you need! Would you like some resources to get started on the rules?
Odd, usually it doesn’t take this long for someone to answer newcomer questions
Hello I'm looking to learn how to play but I wanna be in a game and all that is there someone I can join that can teach me and I can play with
Well, to find a game you go to #find-a-game , but first I’d recommend trying to learn the rules yourself
#learn-to-play
And
Free basic D&D rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
Good place to start
I've been watching some videos but I'm more of a hands on learner
Then make a character
But getting someone to let you join a game when you yourself don’t have an understanding of the rules is going to be difficult
Ok
Joining a game online when you’re a beginner is hard enough, but not knowing the rules lowers your chances even more
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character
guide to character creation
Btw know that it is a lot, and feeling overwhelmed is perfectly normal. Take things at your own pace.
Okay so, I Have some strange ideas
I've known about dnd's dice stuff and check rolls. So theres that, Im not sure if im still missing some knowledge but I feel like I do
And I too have a Concept of mine called "Negative Dice" instead of adding to your attack or check, it makes your attack worse, but your skills have a very high base power that will be taken by the Minus/negative dice
Woild this work out
?
I’m going to need you to elaborate on “base power”.
Like weapon attacks? Those can have damage dice. But skill checks? They don’t
Smt like this already exists in the form of the 2014 versions of the Great Weapon Master and Sharpshooter feats
Also, it's usually not a good idea to start making up your own mechanics when you're new
Indeed
Okay so forsay your character's Minus dice skill has a 20 base power, and they roll a NAT 11
20 - 11 = 9 total
There’s no such thing as base power in dnd
Except maybe passive perception, investigation and insight
I'm an insolent fool, But this is how I learn I guess, yeah I need to actually learn the basics first
It’d be better to see what exists in the game and how it’s system works before tweaking it
Ill get to it 👍
Playing 2014 rules that gives stats based on race. For a sorcerer should I prioritize a race that gives cont. over dex, or halfling for the luck feature? Since we're using pointbuy I can get a 16 in dex and charisma with lightfoot halfling, I'm not sure if there's a race that'd let me get 16 in cont and charisma
Presuming you're playing without the Tasha's rule that racial ASIs can be switched?
At a glance: variant human, half-elf, scourge aasimar.
I think so. Something I could do is instead of having wisdom be my third stat, have it as cont. I'm only worried about insight and passive perception rolls, but maybe I should focus more on being slightly less squishy
The recommended array for a sorcerer does indicate you'd want 14 in Constitution, and more of the "not dying" ability is usually helpful. Don't agonise over your numbers, though. A single plus is only a 5% difference to the dice.
Is it usually okay if only two people in the party have good insight/passive perception? We already have two clerics
newcomer here! I have a group of friends that want to play, but we never have. Would it be better for an experienced DM to run it for us on here? And to that point, one shot or full campaign?
You can GM for them yourself
Try a one-shot or two first. Get your feet wet.
One-shot is better
I feel like I could DM, but I also really want to play for my first time
Get my feet wet ^
That's also fine, but finding a GM can take time
We do need more GM’s in the community
If you want to play right away, one of you stepping up to GM is the best option
Stick up an ad in #looking-for-dm, be sure to include your group's timezone and availability.
We’re college students and working full time (like basically everyone) but maybe I will have my hand at DM
I like writing so that’s a plus
Best of luck. The DM section of the Basic Rules is a good place to start
thank you!
Communicate with your players
Respect your players
Put passion into the game
Don’t overprep
Expand your vocabulary
Show, not tell (and use descriptive language that talks into all senses)
Have fun, no stress, and COMMUNICATE
Have a session zero
You don’t write a story, your party lives through one. Don’t prepare tales, prepare scenarios.
Try to know more than your players
COMMUNICATE
These are some good tips
“Don’t prepare tales, prepare scenarios” I’ll keep that in mind
Maybe just a prewritten oneshot to start 😅
I want to get started on learning DnD what’s one thing you wish you knew as a beginner?
Your character lives in the world, you're just visiting. It's okay to ask the DM what your character would know about a situation.
Pre-made campaigns exist, and you can use them to familiarise yourself with DM-ing
Btw to get started check out #learn-to-play if you haven’t already
Particularly the Free Rules
After that, i recommend making a character and getting it reviewed
The only reason what I just said above wasn’t my answer to your question was because I started as a DM
Hi im new to dnd how do you actually create a character like in dndbeyond? I'm lost
Have you decided on your class, species and background?
Yup
Go to DDB, under Collections you'll find Characters, start in through there.
If it's your first time I'd suggest turning off all the options for expanded and partnered content. Core rules should do you.
Having a low constitution score is a realy bad idia
I actually don't know where is DDB I'm new and I don't know any knowledge ;-;

Can I talk to you when I need help?
You can talk to any of us
Just drop your questions here, someone's usually about.
Oh ok thanks :3333
Oh the character sheet is actual to long welp I need to research that
what does con do in dnd i dont get it?
thx
What should I do first as a total newbie
Read #learn-to-play
Hello, I'm new to DND there are still some concerns I have, But its mostly about creating the narrative, setting and how should I act as a player.
Your character is someone you push about, going on adventures and getting into trouble. Feel free to take risks.
However, you should also treat the world you're in as a real place. Actions and choices can have consequences.
It's a team game, so be sure to interact with your fellow player characters. A three sentence backstory (details in #character-discussion) can help introduce who you're playing to the others and help everyone have something as a basis for their interactions.
Know what your character can do, their features and spells. Be ready when the dice come out.
Lastly, the DM is there to help you all have a fun time. If you're stuck, ask if there's a way to get to your objective, or if your character might know something that could help.
Thanks, I take it that this is where the "Session 0" comes in? Establishing expectations for both player and DM. I hope I could find someone to play with soon
Session Zero is where you'll start having some of these conversations, true, but they can always be revisited as you play.
Check the listings in #looking-for-players for games that want people, read the details, respond as appropriate and cross your fingers.
Type /looking and select the option for #looking-for-dm to advertise yourself as a new player in search of a group. Be sure to include your regular availability!
There are other Discord servers where people gather for games. You can find them in #looking-for-community .
Aside from here, you could also try LFG areas in sites like Reddit, Roll20 or the D&D Beyond forums to get started.
What is a good ability score spread for blood hunter? I use point buy and also use wisdom for my hemocraft modifier
Perhaps mimic cleric or rogue?
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character#StandardArraybyClass
If you can get at least +2 modifiers for your fighting, spellcasting and Con, I'd imagine you'd be in the ballpark.
are there any lfg servers that are region specific? feels like i can't find any campaigns that line up with my time zone in this server
if you have a good dm its much easier then it seems
Yeah but once you get into it, it becomes alot smoother
idk I'll need to find someone in #looking-for-players
don't really know anyone irl who plays dnd
There are region specific TRPG servers, yes
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:

The character builder on D&D Beyond has an optional check box labeled "Beginner?" that toggles on explanations for each step. If that isn't helpful enough then feel free to ask questions either in here or #character-discussion
Can I be a healer character?
Yep, life cleric is the go-to healer but there are other options too, like paladin, druid, bard, etc etc
Thank you for the information! just learning DnD seems interesting and fun
I did something, but I don't know how to assign points. Can you help me?
I did it!
Awesome job
If I create wizard at level 5 he knows spells equal to his spell slots?
theres a part in the player handbook that describes how many spells you know and learn each level
Short answer a lv 5 Wizard can know 9 spells plus 4 cantrips, and has 4 1st lvl slots, 3 2nd level and 2 3rd level
But yes it's better if you look at the chart that describes every spell amount at every level
Did your GM tell you that the game starts at level 5?
If you're just making characters for practice, I suggest you create level one characters to help you learn the basics.
Start at level 5, that's why I ask
Can we play long distance also?
Lots of people play online. You can use online tabletops like Roll20 or Owlbear Rodeo or even just Discord to play.
I don't need have the appropriate material component if I have my arcane focus?
An arcane focus can replace a material component with no GP cost
What if the material component is x with a value of at least x
And how many rounds is 1 minute, I believe 1?
Could someone help me and my friend with play and learn D&D cuz we are getting confused with roll20 and when i try to learn to be a GM it gets really confusing.
Then you've got to have the item it refers to.
There are ten rounds of six seconds in one minute.
1 round has everyone's turn right?
Check out the #learn-to-play channel, it's packed with useful guides. Don't worry about Roll20 just yet.
ok ty
One full round is when everyone in the combat has had their turn, yes.
So revify I can ressurect someone up to 6 rounds later okay
Ten rounds.
Is there way to heal friendly undead or do they regain hit points with time?
Is there a better digital character creator than the d&d beyond one? I have the physical copy of the 2024 player's handbook and d&d beyond doesn't have all the backgrounds from the book and I'd like to port my party's character sheets to be digital instead of physical
Set them as custom on DDB, fill in the blanks.
I couldn't find a way to get the ability score increases the backgrounds gave
It might be clashing with the 2014 ruleset. Try it on a fresh sheet, uncheck all options except core '24, give it a wiggle.
If it comes to it you can always manually enter the ability scores and keep track of where they came from separately.
Mr. Smith i looked at the learn to play but i need help with the website roll20, because i looked on youtube and i lisen to the whole video, but im just not understanding it.
videos*
So Roll20 is a virtual tabletop (VTT) that helps you visualise the play area. Usual way is you upload images for maps and tokens to represent your areas, characters and creatures, then lay them out to see where everyone is and help manage movement and so on in combat.
Could you possibly show me and my friend
Afraid not, I don't have access from here.
Have another look around, Roll20 has plenty of documentation and tutorials to help you get started there.
ok
do you know of any for asia or at least europe? or is there somewhere i can look for them myself?
Are there any good, free online resources on how to start building a campaign? Is it recommended to start with something prebuilt for beginners or can you jump straight in with worldbuilding without any resources?
The free Basic Rules has a DM section. It's better if you run with premade modules or one-shots for your first few sessions at least.
Googling [region name] with D&D or trpg will usually give you useful results. There are also subreddits that will link you to Discord servers for your region. Just search around.
At the very least find premade settings as world building from scratch is an advance skill, but it it calls to ya, you can certainly go for o it. I’m sure you tube has great videos to do it
1 minute cast time on animate undead makes it a bad idea to cast mid combat?
One minute is ten rounds. Most encounters end in a couple of rounds.
The necromancer is still trying to get the corpse up and the encounter ended 18 seconds ago
If the combat is over then there's no issue. They keep at it for a bit and finish the spell. Seems a bit odd to start it during the fight, though.
Try not to do that as you won't be contributing to the fight. That can be annoying to the rest of the party.

Check out the basics in the bot above
Ran into another problem, subclasses. DDB has only 1/class but the players handbook has 4/class.
The free only provides one sub class for each class. If you want more options you’ll need to purchase the digital phb
So I got everything down but I want to add the sub class graviturgy to my wizard
That’s in the book Explorer's Guide to Wildemount that you will need to purchase out be in a campaign that has it and shares the resources
Do I need to buy the digital separately even though I have the physical copy
?books
There are four ways to access content on D&D Beyond that you may have in your physical books:
- Purchase the full digital book from the marketplace
- Purchase a digital/physical bundle from the marketplace
- Join a D&D Beyond campaign with someone who already owns the book where content sharing has been enabled
- Use the homebrew tools to copy the content from your physical book into D&D Beyond (Note: Do not publish any content copied in this way; it is for personal use only)
If yer playing in person then yer all set. If yer playing online, it’s the easiest way but as the bit says u can home brew everything in which is not easy
We are playing in person and do have physical character sheets but we would like to digitalize them to make it simpler for the ttrpg first timers in our group
Would fillable PDF be digitized enough?
Fillable PDF character sheet can be found here: https://media.dndbeyond.com/compendium-images/free-rules/ph/character-sheet.pdf
I'll check it out, thanks 🙏🏻
If a specific monster can cast any spells, its statblock would say so.
And only spells with a Verbal component would require a voice.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/spells#VerbalV
Ive made a rough outline for my first campaign
Noice
What if it's more of a custom thing
Kind of
If it’s not by official statblocks then sure, skeletons can cast any spells
If you’re the one making the rules for that skeleton, then it can do whatever you say it can.

I will !!!!
Hello Noen
First: check out #learn-to-play for a good grasp on the rules. The most important resource there is likely the free rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
After you read through those two resources, I recommend consolidating your knowledge by making a character (backstory and all) and sending it to the #character-discussion channel to get reviewed.
Character creation guide: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character
Know that it is a lot of information, and the amount of reading can be a bit overwhelming, so take things at your own pace.
And of course, if you have any specific questions, please ask away! This channel is meant for it, and there are plenty of great people who should be willing to help you.
That… was a lot longer than I meant it to be
is it possible for me to just read most of the rules like basic rules and try to create my character then start playing to get a grasp of what d&d is ?
Yes! A lot of the rules you’ll learn as you go
alr ty !!!
However
I recommend just learning how to make a character, basic ability checks, modifiers, core gameplay, classes and combat.
They’re just the fundamental knowledge that you kinda need
Everything else can be learnt on the go tho
I will , i'll just read anything i can get ahold of first then i'll start building my character
As I mentioned earlier, take your time and have fun!
Thank you so much !!!!
Just going to say upfront never played dnd but im starting to get into it with a developing character in progress

So I'm confused , i looked at the character builder and i can't be a fallen Aasimar only a Variant Aasimar
because you need to have access to the book where they are printed. as I said, aasimar arent free
how do i gain access to the book?
By buying it
chat
Or having your GM share it
or you join a campaign of a DM who shares their books
how do i build an artificer alchemist chat
where?
?books
There are four ways to access content on D&D Beyond that you may have in your physical books:
- Purchase the full digital book from the marketplace

Anyone trying to help me and my friend get started on DND? We got characters set up but we need help
How to not care about optimisation in dnd?
that did not help one bit
Folks in #character-discussion can help with more in-depth character build discussions
maybe you can elaborate on what you exactly need help with?
Check out #learn-to-play and the free rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
Idk if that's what you're asking but also probably max int, then dex and con, the rest are near dump
just, everything, i dont understand it, im tryna play online, and the character sheet is very forking confusing
the books are expensive ! also which book am i looking for , for the fallen aasimar
If you're having trouble with the character sheet look at any character building guide first
Read the player section of the Basic Rules first
have you read the basic rules on how to build a character?
i did. it did not help
i'm not big on reading
i do not like reading
players handbook 2024
Oh boy
D&D is a game that requires reading
well you gotta read the rules in dnd
not all of them, but a decent chunk for the basics
No way around it I'm afraid
Man I hate throwing dice and role-playing, it gets in the way of me trying to play dnd
so i lose my d6 yesterday and my mom js found it on the stairs
Good thing it's found
well, kinda. there are multiple versions of fallen aasimar out there
what do you suggest then?
I suggest playing something free for your first time or use DM shared material. If you like it, then you can buy the players handbook
can u gimme utube tutorial
and my new dice set js came ❤️
Thank you !!!!

^ Some ways folks play D&D online
It's awarded by the gm
ooooooooh
Dm reward
You also get starting gold
Your background origin also gives you some starting gold
that's alot of ways 😭
But yes, the rest of your gold and treasure come through adventuring!
but when building a character i start up with 0?
Depends on the table
You get what your starting background and equipment provide you
Usually it's 1 to 3
1 to 3 PP?
cause when i want to choose equipement i don't understand how i can since i don't know how to get SP 😭
So let's take a look at the Acolyte background origin.
Ability Scores: Intelligence, Wisdom, Charisma
Feat: Magic Initiate (Cleric)
Skill Proficiencies: Insight and Religion
Tool Proficiencies: Calligrapher's Supplies
Equipment: Choose A or B: (A) Calligrapher's Supplies, Book (prayers), Holy Symbol, Parchment (10 sheets), Robe, 8 GP; or (B) 50 GP
oooooh
GP stands for gold pieces
sooo the GP is not the price of the equipement?
its how much GP i start with?
Did you see my message about the Acolyte background?
Equipment: Choose A or B: (A) Calligrapher's Supplies, Book (prayers), Holy Symbol, Parchment (10 sheets), Robe, 8 GP; or (B) 50 GP
You pick A or B. If you pick A, you get that set of equipment and 8 Gold Pieces
OOOOOOH
You pick B you don't get that equipment and you get 50 GP
So yeah your starting equipment come from your class and your background
And that provides your starting gold
lifestyle provides me with starting gold or equipment
(sorry I'm a slow learner 😭)
Well the background origin does
oooh ok ty !
Could I get some help about just like…starting?
Cuz I don’t know the full rules nor fully remember the classes or anything like that

im new to dnd completely, would it fly to have a vampire character who joins the party purely just to spite evil?
Thanks!
Depends on the DM, but vampires aren’t an official species
like, a mf so spiteful that he became a vampire he decided to go out of his way to be good and helpful just to get back at the stereotypes
ohh i see i see
Also I don’t think you really want to play a vampire lol.
Especially if you’re going with a more classical vampire with all their weaknesses from the folklore.
so i made a character and can anyone tell me if its okay ? i wanna send the sheet but i don't think it lets me here
What would be the basics?
This is a lot of info
honestly, i think the weaknesses could be fun to play around with in rp
You can if you're using DnDBeyond, set your character to public, and share the URL to your sheet.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, I recommend just learning how to make a character, basic ability checks, modifiers, core gameplay, classes and combat.
having them doing their best to try and coverup the fact they are a vampire could lead to some fun moments
Oh I didn’t know you could be those
I thought they were just monsters or enemies exclusively
Thanks!
You can’t
The first two chapters of the free rules cover the core game mechanics and how to create a character - it's start there.
Don't worry - you don't have to memorize this. I've been playing for years and I still miss things or mess stuff up.
Oh….😔
Hence this
awwwww…
does this work?
It did work! Okay make sure to take your classes starting equipment and your background origin's equipment and gold
I don't ?
How do i do that?
And your AC (the number enemies need to roll to hit you) is kinda atrocious, but the character is still usable
Nope
oh what ?
i think i fixed it now
It’s because of your low dexterity
what should my dexterity be?
You can still learn more spells btw (equipment is fixed)
I’d swap the strength and dexterity scores
oooh ok
oooh where?
Go to “spells”, and you should be able to manage them
In the builder ( https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/####/builder/class/manage where #### is your character ID) go to the Equipment tab of the builder.
In the Starting Equipment panel, select "Equipment" and pick from the starting equipment choices.
Once they are added, you can equip them so they show up and are ready to be used.
oooh i added them
OOOOH OKAY!
how can i swap ?
You should have more first level spells…
This doesn’t seem so bad and grueling
i dont know why i went to look at it. i don't know enough about 2024 rules to know if anything is off.
I thought there were more species honestly
not so many in the free rules
Ah
there are a ton of species, but not all of them are free
you picked the Light cantrip twice
Of course
I’m too broke to afford those cool slime things
alr !
You still only have one first level spell on my end, and it’s from your background and not the class
Nvm
It loaded
sooo is there anything i should fix?
Give us a backstory and you should be set
sooo backstory , can it be as imaginary as i want?
Depends do you plan on using them for a campaign?
Or just practice
just practice
Then go ham
alr ty !
try to include a reason your character wanted to become an adventurer, also include a short term goal/task/quest that could be accomplished in a few weeks or months in the game, also include a long term/lifetime goal/task/quest that drives your character forward. beyond that, include some quick info about their upbringing and any important events.
also where can i write my backstory?
Alright thank you!!!
Just make it fitting for the character level a- and flat parrot answered everything I was about to say
ALR!!!
Anywhere, but we won’t be able to see it on your character sheet so just send it in here or #character-discussion .
Have fun!
oh, as a general rule for background length i'd say minimum 1 paragraph per level, maximum 1 page per starting level.
any less than a paragraph per level and you haven't put much thought into the character. any more than a page per level and nobody's going to bother reading it.
unless its for a one-shot. those characters usually don't have a lot of story thought put into their short lives.
Personally, I do backstories that are 100-250 words long, but different people will have different preferences
(Well, granted, I’ve written a 700-1000 words backstory before, but that was just for fun)
Cuz I like using some of my characters as NPC ideas
in reading most pre-written campaigns and adventures, NPCs have just enough (or are supposed to) to play them effectively and tie them to the story. a few paragraphs or so. a PC might have a paragraph for what they accomplished at each level. higher level means more accomplishments.
hello, i'm totally new to dnd, and where i come from, it is not popular, however, i'm interested and i want to join a game (if it's online) and i'm the kind of person who can learn as he goes, so while i know so little, i understand the concepts of creating characters, rolling the dice, and following the narrative of the dungeon master, also, i know a lot of people who have no idea about what to do in dnd and they manage to join a normal game, i want to join just to try, and finding the time to committ is another story, and hopefully it's free, thank you everyone, and i'm sorry for such a lengthy comment.
welcome.
it might take a bit of time to find a party to join, we have channels for that.
Hi totally new to dnd, I’m Nugget.
Anyway! If you know the basic rules then go to #find-a-game to get started.
in the meantime, you can read up on the free rules
amazing, guys, thanks, about combat.. i think you have to roll the dice and based on the number it lands on, it will determine how effective your attack is, the highest is Nat 20
How to make a character, basic ability checks, modifiers, core gameplay, classes and combat is my checklist on what you should know before joining a game.
How can i join a game just for beginners , like just a fun game with a gm that knows the game and beginners like me :D
Yeah there’s a bit of work to do here. What you’re describing is just one small aspect of combat.
well, i will have to read the rules you shared thoroughly, i know just superficial information

You can look at specific DM’s post in #looking-for-players or look at #looking-for-dm
Okiii ty !
hello
is it normal for people to ask you for money for "Art work" for a campaign ? as it seems like a red flag to me ?
When in combat and use all my spell slots when my turn is done do I get them back or no?
Depends on the situation TBH, typically paid games are advertised as such. Free games are typically just that.
Some DM's may ask for reimbursement for the cost of running a game if they spend out a lot but this should either be explained upfront or offered by the players, but not expected.
It would raise a red flag for me, depending how it was broached.
You do not, you get your spell slots back on a Long Rest or Short Rest depending on your class.
How’d you get those stats?
Those stats don’t seem very fitting for the character you’re trying to play, and the stats feel abnormally low
The build is also impossible as you need 13 dexterity to even multiclass with blood Hunter
Welcome! A few notes of feedback for your character:
- Make sure your campaign is starting at level 2 or above, since you have a level 2 character.
- Make sure your DM is ok with homebrew (unofficial/custom) content, since you are using Blood Hunter
- On that note, your multiclass isn't possible at the moment. As per multiclassing rules (and each classes' pages) you must meet the minimum stat requirement of both the class(es) you're multiclassing out of and the class(es) you're multiclassing into. Fighter requires either your Dex or Str to be at least 13; Blood Hunter requires your Dex or Str to be at least 13 and your Int to be at least 13.
- You seem to have set your Hemocraft Modifier to Wisdom yet made your Wisdom low (11). You should switch that to Intelligence if you're going to keep Int the higher score.
- As Nugget said which of the 3 methods did you use to generate your stats? They're fairly low across the board, particularly in Str/Dex and Con which are important for a melee character. If you rolled I suggest switching to Point Buy or Standard Array as Rolled stats are typically done under DM supervision to prevent cheating.
As a general note, we don't recommend multiclassing for newbies. It's one of the few ways you can seriously dampen your character on accident. You should ideally have a clear synergy or goal in mind when multiclassing and have an understanding of what powers and features you're trading to do so.
Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
That’s designed for stats that were rolled elsewhere to be put into your character sheet
Have fun!
Hey, I’ve been on the side lines of D&D for a long time, never really found a way to get started, but now my 11yr old is getting into it, they have an afterschool D&D club in his middle school that he has joined.
I’m excited, and he wants me to start playing also, and as much as I really want, I’m not sure where to start. Any suggestions for an old man and his son to start.

Free basic D&D rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
To start I recommend just learning how to make a character, basic ability checks, modifiers, core gameplay, classes and combat.
I have a question do you make a character sheet for a character before you start a campaign or one shot or do you make a character with a GM so it fits in more
The latter
its better to make a character once you're in contact with the GM, that way you can make something that will jive with the game. however, i suggest going through and making a few characters to explore the kind of character you want to make and play. and it will get you more familiar with the character sheets and other options
Oh ok thanks and how long do one shots usually last
a one-shot tends to be a small self contained adventure played in one sitting. but something it might run long and actually be played over two sessions that are split up. i find a decent session tends to last 3 to 4 hours, but it all depends on the group. some will go for a full 8 hour day with some breaks. others will only go for an hour.
it all depends on the group and scheduling
Ok thanks
a campaign is usually a longer story with many adventures spread throughout, with the same characters playing and growing over the course of the story. it could last a few months of real time, or years of real time. one-shots usually don't have much character growth because they aren't long stories but small contained ones.
then there are hexcrawls, where there isn't an over-arching story or quest, but instead the party explores different locations which tend to have randomly generated events or quest hooks that the party can decide what they'd like to do.
but that's more advanced stuff and you probably won't see many hexcrawls advertised on here.
Hey all! i'm navkaran and I also wanted to dabble into dnd, i was at the website and i'm learning character creation right now. I do want to know though, once i understand the basics and want to go in with a gm into char.creation for a campaign, how do I find a gm/game that is comfortable with beginners?

i'd say experiment with creating a few characters, get a feel for things.
yup thanks :P
also read the whole thing of Peril in Pinebrook. it will help you learn what happens on the player side and the GM side. that way when you are playing things can move smoother.
sure, the book looks sick

is there a free dnd soloing so I can get a hang of it 🤔 if nawt then dont mind me kjHDKJA
online
D&D is a collaborative TTRPG game designed for 1 Dungeon Master and 3-6 players typically.
While there are some folks who have created tools to allow for solo D&D play, you'll have to do a bit of internet searching to find them
There is a bit of an interactive D&D story you could run through to get a simple idea of how D&D plays: https://www.dndbeyond.com/begin/en
And there's a few computer games out there inspired by D&D (like Baldurs Gate 3)
Anyway hope that helps!
(You can also use #find-a-game to learn how to find a group to play D&D with)
Hey can dnd be played online if so how does it work
Yes it most certainly can, and honestly is probably where most of it is done
The group agrees and uses a platform to communicate (such as Discord), a site for character creation / maintaining (usually something like but there are others, D&D Beyond or Roll20), and then a VTT (Virtual Table Top) for maps and other visualization (There are a bunch of these such as Roll20)
is there any group i can join as in a comunity?
So how do we see the map does dm show his screen?
Most of the VTT sites are free to the players and the DM may or may not pay for extras. Most if not all then allow the players to see there aspect of the map on their screen
Okay thank you now I’ll attempt to find a game.

Is an order cleric a good character to start with?
Yes
There aren’t many classes/subclasses that aren’t tbf
Ok
hey all new player looking to start DnD should i make a character before i even start a campaign or find a DM or should i wait until i can talk to my DM about it ??
Make a character for practice, then make a character with your table
how do i make a character
Check out the link above
And also consider reading #learn-to-play if you haven’t already
this one
Ye
ok
do i have to leran eveythig
everything
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, I recommend just learning how to make a character, basic ability checks, modifiers, core gameplay, classes and combat.
ok
every time i see those kobolds in the find a game picture, i imagine they're carrying doritos
do i need to fill in a character sheet
are you doing this on DnDBeyond or by hand?
dndbeyond
so as you are creating a character, the information you put in will fill out a character sheet
if you want a regular looking character sheet, you can go to the manage button and then export
when you export it that way, you will download a pdf that you can print out.
did that help?
Hey, I’m a semi new player I’ve played a couple times and have multiple characters but I’m waiting to make their character sheets, just wanted to say hi because I just joined.
Hellloo
so i am about to make my character with a 2024 character sheet but i the instruction it says i need to ask my dm what kind of camapagin
Which section / subheader are you referring to?
Yeah you don’t make a character sheet before a campaign, you need to make the sheet with whomever ya dm is
In general yes you ideally should make a character for the DM’s campaign. But there’s nothing wrong with making a character for practice
Were you needing clarification? GIFS aren’t allowed on the server
so i just make one
Yup!
then what would i do next
