I've read DND horror stories and they entertain me, so maybe it gave me more knowledge
Eh most RPG Horror Stories are hyperbole and examples of groups having bad communication or folks breaking the groups assumptions and boundaries
don't be surprised if i ask a buttload of questions while fleshing out my character
I'm just a drama fiend
Maybe I could use that in my character since I know that best
I would stress the importance of communication and collaboration in most good D&D games - games where everyone is trying to ensure everyone else is also having fun at the table.
Hi! Is there anyone in the savvana area (ga) looking for new players?
For specific cities, your best bet is checking your local game and book stores, local libraries, and even Facebook.
Our server has Looking For Game channels but most games would be online
See #find-a-game for more information on how to use those channels.
Alright thanks <3
Good luck with your game search! Hope you find a great group to play D&D with!
can someone help me learn to play dnd?

How can I find a beginner friendly dnd campaign group im pretty new
there are a few looking for group channels on here. lots of different things in there
Some groups are fine with taking on newbie players - can always ask if they'll take you. And occasionally some folks post games/campaigns specifically for new players.
Is there a place I can find virtual DMs accepting new players?

Can i have help with the lfp command?
if you look at the post right above, there is a purple bar in there with a hashtag. that is where you can go to find a group.
what specifically did you need help with?
The command thing is just kinda confusing to me
Hello! I'm about to embark on my first D&D campaign and wanted to ask for some tips and tricks when it comes to playing a Rogue Arcane Trickster! š
I've done research and stuff already, but hoping to get some info from people who may have played the class before!
I think you need to be in those specific channel to use those commands
No you can use the command in any channel. The instructions are in #find-a-game š
guys i am playing dnd with my friends and am making a eloquence bard, should i take 3 levels of warlock or just 1
i know from a basic rogue that you attack-move-hide, making hide be your final act on your turn increases the likelihood of you being hidden at the start of your next turn. as for the arcane trickster, i've never played that class.
i've just realized that i don't think i've used those commands. or if i did it was a looooong time ago.
okay, i have no clue what i'm doing and i'm tryna figure out how to go about things

Some great basic info in that bot for ya to look over my friend
that, that was what i was looking for thank you
Glad to help
Hello! I've been interested in D&D since middle school (I think I have some 3.5E rulebooks around somewhere...) and even very briefly ran a few ultimately unsuccessful sessions of pathfinder once. I played a few sessions of a campaign one of my coworkers was a part of, just joining in the middle of an ongoing campaign, but I've never actually really played for any length of time. It never really occurred to me to try looking online.
is it true that it's a good idea for everybody who wants to get into DnD to play as DM at least once? or is that like some myth i heard when i was in high school
While I'm certainly no expert, I can say from some experience in attempting to start a fresh campaign with a few friends IRL that even if you pick up a pre-made campaign it can be somewhat daunting to jump into the DM spot or at least it was for me
Just a myth Iād say MOST of my players have never DMed and love playing
i know for a fact if i were to take the chance to play DM, i wouldn't know what i was doing and the campaign my players would experience would be absolutely improv'd
100% everything that happened would come up on the spot if i were DM. which is why i want to learn how to be not a DM so i don't break everything
I tried to go the opposite route and bought a pre-made campaign. The main quest started with a murder mystery and my players were organically moving around the town to try and talk to people and gather info. It was nice because the setting was already somewhat fleshed out. They go to a tavern and there's already a description of the tavern keeper drawn up
Unfortunately, as they moved around, the specific people that they ran into all happened to have some kind of a mobility issue. The first person had a pronounced limp and walked with a cane, the second person had a peg leg, the third person was in a wheelchair
There were dozens of fleshed out characters in the city, and the ones they happened to run into all had some kind of a similar mobility issue and they got confused about who was giving them what information, which led to it petering out. :/
the power of improvisation is that no matter what happens, it'll be something new
which is why i don't think i would make a good DM because no matter what my group does, they'll always get something different. i will never plan anything.
make loose plans, or at least a direction. unless you are doing a pure hexcrawl and randomly rolling for what they run into.
sounds like a good time. i think i understand the gist of things
Are ya DMing? Waw
Kobold Press has an entire Hexcrawl series. really good stuff. clear instructions on how to do it.
I think being a DM makes you a better player for various reasons, not the least of which is viscerally appreciating the work that goes into preparing the game. Not essential, though.
at leading know the process of what goes on behind the screen is helpful to players
when i first teach players in their first session i tend to pull back the DM screen and let them see what it is that i do. i'm not just pulling random bits out of the air, and there's some back and forth during combat instead of some weird unknown void. i show them the mechanics of it so they know there's an actual process
It's a good idea but not necessary.
Playing other RPGs apart from DnD is more important imho
yes, playing a wide variety of ttrpgs is a good idea. different ones do different things well. that, and different players will just click with different systems
but i'd say learning two similar systems at the same time isn't a good idea.
How does Adventurer's League work?
Hello! Iām new to DND and Iām trying to learn more about it. Where should I start?
Try this first
its basically an official dnd thing, with DMs and players playing approved adventures

hmmmmmmm
There's a couple of channels for that: #adventurers-league will get you started.
How does this channel work
I'm trying out DND for the first time and want to make a character to use when I start playing with friends
Their like different classes right? What do they each do
If you're new to D&D, folks can help answer core game rules/mechanics questions here.
?tag new class
Class
Your class is the primary definition of what your character can do and gives you a variety of special features, such as a fighterās mastery of weapons and armor, and a wizardās spells. This article provides a quick breakdown of each available class and can help guide your choice.
Each class also lets you choose a subclass, which provides unique features and further specialization within the class.
Thanks
iām looking to join a upcoming dnd game

So Artificer can Infuse items with magic, does the magic depend on the type of item, the players wishes or both?
Kinda both
Their like an alchemist?
Thereās a list of magical infusions you can do, and some can only be put on specific equipment
Thatās one if the artificerās subclasses, but no itās not the main premise of the class. Think more⦠magic gadgets guy.
Okay thanks ^_^
Can you explain or like link an article about subclasses? I'm planning to be an Artificer (if that's how it works)
It's also possible to describe many spell effects as being the result of various potions and lotions a caster might make up. There's an element of of "luckily, here's one I prepared earlier" but there's nothing against being a sorcerer casting firebolt and describing it as throwing vials that explode in flames.

i'm reading the player's handbook 2024 edition right now and i can definitely recommend reading that to learn about classes and such. i'm reading it rn while trying to fill in a character sheet. having the two side by side definitely helps speed up the process

Hi, I'd like to make a post as a GM to find players. Does someone know how to make it so that the playtime is shown for the viewer in their own time zone?

has anyone done strixhaven before
can help me look through my character sheet?
If you want your sheet reviewed feel free to post it here or in #character-discussion
Did they ever make regular character sheets for the new Borderlands starter set?

Hello!
Howdy
Thank you. That will help me a lot.
Any dnd campaign you guys recommend to watch on yt?
The biggies are Critical Role (just started a new campaign in a new world, so it's a good time to jump in) and Dimension 20. I started Girls Who Don't D&D (audio only), and I really liked it. I need to pick it back up. This came up just yesterday, actually: #dnd-newcomers message
Ah, thanks.
I will check them out...
I hope these stays free...cause many campaign goes only for channel members after 1 or 2 episodes...
D20 has some free campaigns, and all of CR is released for free, at least so far, following the "live" broadcasts.
CR and others like it are more like scripted shows than actual campaigns. They can be good entertainment if that's your thing, but don't expect real games to be anything remotely similar.
super random but i'm still working on figuring out my character, it's going to be a bard, and to stay focused i'm listening to bardcore lol
currently listening to candy shop! the medieval bardcore version
Are there any DND groups that play on discord?
Yup, lots of people play online. Sometimes just with discord or a virtual table top like Roll20. Most use a combination of both.
Hi guys i am a complete noobie in DnD, but would love to learn, can somebody help me

Welcome! The best place to start is with the free Basic Rules, linked in the bot post above. As you're giving them a read, we'll be happy to answer any specific questions you have here in this chat.
I donāt have a computer so it only has to be discord
That might be a little more difficult, since few Virtual Table Top programs work well with phones.
That's not to say it's impossible, though. There are online games that don't use VTTs and online games that are text only, for example. They're just less common.
Owlbear works fine on mobile devices. I think DDB Maps does too
Are they apps? Iām on iPhone
DDB Maps is a browser app. The official app itself doesn't support it yet (on Android, not sure about iOS)
Im playing my first dnd campaign,
It's only text and discord (with avare bot)
what free resources would someone recommend to take the game from just feeling like an rp acting improv session to full dnd experience? played multiple games at home that always feel half baked
Are you the player or the DM in this situation?
player
Gotcha. And can you say more about how they feel "half baked"?
What did you mean by "full D&D experience"
lack of a lot of gameplay mechanics, like distance from enemies, long/short rests, loot, and im sure plenty of other deeper mechanics. its like a bunch of gaps in information on both sides keeping it from feeling fully fleshed out. what can i learn that can really make me able to plug and play into any d&d campaign?
like what can i utilize to take me from a rookie to a more intermediate level?
Maybe you ought to run a game?
It sounds like what you're missing is just a solid understanding of the actual numbers + mechanics. A dive into the rulebook might be warranted!
I think this is a GM issue. Try looking for a different table.
Or, idk, raise the issue with the GM first?
id agree, ive read through it a number of times but a lot of the mechanics i stated were problems for me/groups ive played with were hard to digest. does anyone have any key video guides that arent just āwhat classes are whatā and āhow to roll a d20 for checksā?
Leaving feels a bit harsh
Yeah, talking to the GM first is always an option
(Apologies, I promise I'm not avoiding your questions on purpose here, I'm still just looking for more context)
So just to confirm, the games you're currently playing in are either rules-light or pure free-form-RP?
im not leaving, i just recognize that i want to play dnd a lot more commonly and want to have enough knowledge to be comfortable in any campaign i join with the 5e ruleset. i love spending time with that group but hunger for something more solidified to play with in my other spare time.
Try running a game yourself
Sounds like he's trying to get resources for learning actual DnD first. One step at a time!
Thatās completely reasonable! I was just responding to Belphegors suggestion.
For learning the game, I'd look into tutorial sessions. You can find them online (like via the virtual weekends advertised on this server's Events tab or StartPlaying.Games) or in person like at a library or local game store.
I still stand by my original advice, which is to become a GM. There's no better way to learn how to play TRPGs.
i like the way that sounds, because online video guides seem to only handle the very very basic core fundamentals
Many of the popular DnD videos also have some disinformation
I say host a few one shots, ask specific questions, and do a bit more reading. Just get more familiar with the game in all fields.
what thats insane to hear!
You'd be surprised
You can also ask questions here as you dive into the rules and feel confused. We've got a small army of folks who regularly help new clarify things for new players and DMs.
Me included! So you might see me around.
i did a very very brief 5e starters set campaign, but got hung up on some of the mechanics not utilized during my experiences gaming previously and it made it frustrating to continue
would re reading the PHB and rule set over and over till it digests be the best course of option? what would you guys say best helped your game knowledge?
For me, it was repetition and asking questions of my group, who had been playing the game long before I joined.
For me, though I love reading, reading the same thing over and over again with no emotional attachment except hate doesnāt exactly help retain information.
Iād say revise on your understanding once, then look at specific questions as you go. Quiz yourself in your head, and get things wrong. Thatās how you learn.
I find that, rather than reading the whole book over and over, focus on bits that you're interesting in understanding. For example, let's say Spellcasting. Rather than trying to understand spellcasting, not quite getting it, and then moving on to the next section, try to nail down Spellcasting in particular before continuing.
And that's a great scenario in which hopping over here and asking specific questions can help!
For example, did you say you were iffy around short and long rests? Ask here and find out when youāre still interested!
Smaller chunks is also a good idea. Like taking DOSH's example, there are multiple parts to spellcasting, so learn a bit at a time rather than in one gulp.
i appreciate all the tips and help you guys are all giving, ive been watching long format dnd lore videos for months, played bg3 till my eyeballs hurt and been doing various sample sized play groups with the same group of friends and family. ive just fallen in love with this world so deeply and want to be the absolute best i can be!
Btw short rests are rests that a party do for one hour, where they regain their hit dice (what it is depending on the class, and how many depending on the level). Each one restores 1 hit dice +con mod worth of health.
hey guys, where do I go to try to find a small group, me and my friend wanted to start a casual one and we are new

ty
Long rests take 8 hours, restore all health, and restore half your hit dice.
1 example of a short rest may be after a skirmish, and the level 3 barbarian is badly hurt and wishes to spend all of his hit dice (3d12)
and where would you find out what to roll for damage for a weapon? or is it just simply stated by the dm? is there like a monsters guide but for all the potential weapons you might pick up?
Thereās a list of weapons and their damage
Actually not too much scrolling
But scroll down a bit
thats incredibly helpful
Isnāt it so great when you ask for help
Imma be honest Iām barely past the stage youāre trying to get to, I scrap enough info together to host a game and try to dress up words for the rest
Iām still learning something every day
I literally learnt how death saving throws worked when one of my players were downed and I called a 1 minute break under the pretext of letting them have their last words in case they died.
I was searching it up.
What Iām trying to say is, donāt stress over trying to learn every rule quickly. Dnd is a lot of making mistakes and trying again. And again. And again.
ill be diving in deeper to the rulesets and phb, while trying to pop into tutorials to really upgrade my player experience! i appreciate you guys and sorry if my greenness came across annoying. i also meant no harm towards my playgroup theyre just at a place they want to be and can have fun at. they dont necessarily want to be experts in the field, or might already believe they are and just prefer doing a lot less. makes it hard to use them as a hands on tool for learning however!
Nothing to apologize for!
Idk why people ask if them being new in a newcomers channel is a bad thing. Itās literally our job! Youāre doing fine!
The hardest step is the first one, and by asking us you just took it!
This channel is for asking questions about the basics of DnD. If we didn't want to answer them, we wouldn't be here
-# Not literally our job. We do this voluntarily.
I need help, when I looked through Artificer I was curious as how you build stuff, like could you just make a stick into a weapon that shoots a lvl 3 fireball?
Also I just started reading up on Artificer and never really looked at it till now
-# but you get my point
Common misconception: an artificer can't just make things out of nothing or scraps.
Yo can I join someoneās campaign?
Their class features describe what they can actually do.
I believe thatās replicate magic item, but Iām not the most familiar with Artificers
Head to #looking-for-players.
Ok
Nope! Artificers can't 'create' items any more so than a Monk or Ranger can.
Artificers instead imbue items with magical properties, picked from a list of Infusions. You can read up on Infusions, which is the feature they get at 2nd level.
Rock gnomes can, but theyāre also not very good at it
Oh I thought it was a Rick and Morty situation where you just create a turret made of twigs lol
Definitely not!
So its more or less an Enchanter than anything?
Yeah
pretty much yeah
That's a closer description, yeah. They're limited by their level and which Infusions they pick.
I was reading on those like a boost in AC or minor things but I thought Artificer's actually created weapons or the likes
Unfortunately not
I mean, they can, just not better than any other class
Tis would be cool tho
What classes create things?
None in particular
All classes can use the item crafting mechanics. They're general rules in the game, not linked to any one class.
So if I were to could I give my Artificer Tinker's/Smith's Tools
Note that general item crafting still won't make you a twig machine gun though. It allows you to craft an item from one of the pre-existing items in the game.
Also what's the difference between Tinker's and Smith's tools
This is the relevant rules section: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/equipment#CraftingEquipment
Each one of them can be used to make a few different items. You can read up on the individual tools in the link above
Can a Eldritch Knight use spells on ranged weapons?
I donāt see why not
Which spells are you referring to?
You cannot apply twinned spell to wish
Like could I use Ice Knife on an arrow?
While thatās possible this isnāt something thatās reliable for the average game. The baseline rules are what should be expected.
To give it more range
That would not be possible. Spells do only what they say they do, nothing more and nothing less
That goes without saying
Again yes but especially for the newcomers channel the base rules are the default not āmy DM might go against the rules so itās okā
But not every GM will approve that, which is why raw is important
Yes, but then every questions would have the answer āAsk the Dmā
It then invalidates the prospect of a question.
That's a cleric spell and Eldritch Knight can only learn Wizard spells
Most spells go to multiple classes
It also cannot be cast on an object
Its purely Cleric tho
No because it doesnāt say it can do that
Doesnāt change that Spirit Guardians cannot be cast on an object
No. It is casts an aura around you
Reading the spell explains the spell. It only does what it says it does
No. Spirit Guardians eminates out from the caster and follows you as you move. You can't cast it on other creatures and objects. It only applies to the creature that casts the spell
You can't throw creatures in D&D
That is something that would be helpful to ask your DM about since there are no rules for throwing creatures
PCs are creatures
A creature is any being in the game, including player characters
Well if the barbarians a path of giant, thereās maybe something? But that can be reflavoured as anythingās
Not particularly throwing
Path of the Giant Barbarian has the ability to move a creature from one location within 30ft of itself to another location within 30ft of itself. Its not actually "throwing" that creature, though it is commonly flavored that way in role play
Which is why I clarified that itās not particularly throwing
Yep, I know you already knew this. I was just trying to explain your point a little more clearly.
Yes, it is. āYour connection to giant strength allows you to hurl both allies and enemies on the battlefieldā
Itās not even reflavoring, just the original flavor
Fair enough. Though when most people talk about "throwing" a creature they typically are referring to using the creature as an offensive projectile, whereas this feature simply lets you harmlessly move them from one location to another
You could throw one creature above another one, so they both recieve falling damage.
Yes, but that's because of the falling damage rules, not because you "threw" them into each other. I feel like we're getting a bit off topic
hii guys! what can i expect really from a session 0? i have one this upcoming sunday
hai
Some discussions around whatās ok and not ok at the table, a general consensus on the genre and architype of the game, maybe some house rules and maybe some character creation

Should help
Start off with a class, then pick a species and background. Let us know what decide and we can go from there.
bah
I'd be happy to help with more specific stuff if you need. Making decisions or knowing how to play a certain archetype.
(I love character building)
:3
When I Session Zero, I cover the theme and flavor of the campaign, answer questions about the setting, try to stimulate ideas about character origins and backstory, and set expectations for conduct (usually in a very casual way, Iāve never had any conduct issues in a game but often people at the table are meeting some of the others for the first time and itās good to do)
If anyone comes in with character ideas, I like to get those ideas out to the table for other players to play off of or avoid duplication
oh thanks for the detailed reply! this is making me even more excited now!
hi
Hi everyone, me and my siblings are first time players, and we started dragons of stormwreak isle. I was DM, and each of my siblings played two characters because the adventure required at least four characters.I was explaining the rules, but they were clearly bored so I decided to start the game. I still donāt know many of the rules myself, and our first session was not great. We did not even finish the first encounter, and the combat took really long. They both had trouble playing their characters, and treated it like a video game, trying to make the best decisions. Now they are both reluctant to play anymore. Does anyone have any tips for me?
Bad first impressions are rough, so thatās sad to hear.
Iāve never DMād or played Stormwreak Isle, so if anything sound off thatās why BUT:
Try to know more than your players
Use descriptive language that reaches to the human senses, beyond sight
Show, not tell (helps add depth and story to descriptions)
Try to add emotional elements to the game, but I canāt say how cuz I havenāt played
For me, the best way to get other beginners into the game is to tap into the roleplaying and descriptive parts of DND.
Oh, and encourage them to read what their characters do, and you might need to do a bit of research yourself to help them.
Thanks NuggetN!
No problemo! I started DND as a DM so I know the pain.
Controlling two characters is pretty tiring tbh, is there a campaign that'd work nicely with just two players?
Alternatively cut the amount of enemies per encounter by half
Are there any you would recommend for two beginner players? Iām looking for a shorter one because they are quite impatient.
I find that people getting into dnd often (as you said) treat it like a video game instead of a Role playing game, so using descriptive language and roleplay to create immersion (combat can break this if it lasts too long) is helpful
Having players, especially newbies, control two PCs at once isn't a good idea.
Iāve never actually done a pre-made adventure, so I canāt help you there lol. Sorry!
There are free one shots in D&D Beyond
Lost Mine of Phandelver perhaps
Decrease the enemies per encounter if needed too
Or you can make a sidekick with you playing as it
Okay! Thanks everyone for the feedback. Hopefully I can get them back into it. (I spent 4 hours reading the rule book and Iām not even halfway).
Since sidekicks don't have to be human, it gives you the perfect excuse to only include the sidekick during combat
For example the sidekick can be a Mastiff (a dog like monster)
Hol up aināt a Mastiff just a dog
A breed of dog, yes
Theyāre a monster in dnd?
Any npc stat block is a "monster"
Considering Sublime said dog LIKE monster I assumed they had a weird DND version
Do you guys have any tips for changing encounters to balance it for two players? Is just halving the number of enemies good enough? What is there are three enemies?
Halving enemies is usually enough. If thereās three, do one + a weaker enemy
I'm brand new to D&D, i've wanted to try it but could never find a DM to play with and teach me the ropes, does anyone know where to start? I'm interested in trying 5e
By doglike I was mostly thinking in terms of how they're larger versions of the mastiffs irl and are bred for combat purposes
Ah I see
thx the chat wasn't showing at first
For shits and giggles, if one of the players is a Halfling or a small sized humanoid, they can actually ride the Mastiff
Thatās not even a bad idea, considering you can use it for rogues to have advantage on all attacks. Mounts are great.
So that gives another excuse for the sidekick to be useful outside of combat without having the DM to do anything extra
Hii, my friends n I are still in the character development part. Can you have hybrid characters?
Does anyone have an open campaign
What do you mean by that?
Any available spots in a campaign
Sorry nah, Iāve got 7 beginners. Thatās plenty on my plate.
hi, im a beginner and i want to ducngeon master my beginner friends, where should i begin??
I have no clue
Like a hybrid of two species. I was thinking of turning my character into a hybrid of gnome and Ashborn. c: idk if that's a thing in DND or not bcuz idk if some species Can make offspring together?
I think it is Iām not sure though
Then yes
Take features from both
Iām not the most familiar tho, so take that with a grain of salt
Get a gist of the rules at #learn-to-play
thanks
Thanks for pointing it out
There should be a dungeon master section
Ya there should
I think you should talk to your dm regarding the hybrid races, I think the only "hybrids" are half elves and half orcs?
Awesome awesome ty gonna get crackin with the characters

DM for more info!
There are no official hybrid options outside of the Half-Elf and Half-Orc from the 2014 rules.
To make a hybrid option without homebrewing you would either choose the Custom Lineage species option or pick only one set of features from your parental lineage(s). For example, if you wanted a half-Aaracokra half-Dragonborn you would choose to either get all of the Aaracokra features or all of the Dragonborn ones, not both or a custom mix of the two.
Make sure to use #find-a-game to make game postings. Unfortunately soliciting games outside the proper channels is against server rules

My apologies. I've done it properly now. Thank ya m8
Hi everyone, I am new around here. I have heard such great things about Dungeons and Dragons. I am a newbie to the game and I am wondering how I get started on it?

I'd start reading into any of the links that you like. The Basic Rules link contains the actual rules of how to play the game, so that one is probably most important overall.
If you've got any questions, feel free to ask here.
Okay. Thank you for letting me know. I am looking forward to do some Roleplaying with everyone.
As for how to find a group to play with, it can be a longer process, because groups are organized privately and obviously there is a lot of demand.
However, this server has a looking for group section here to help: #find-a-game
And community member iamrazorwing has made a great guide in form of a google doc:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1rjwuod1lNBM5n4X_TH2ZoqTULv53jWaVMXtrzKVboms/edit?tab=t.0
Hi, when I try to post in 'Looking for players,' it tells me I cannot make a post. I read the instructions, but they do not enlighten me on how to post or even edit it to look okay.
Correct - you need to use the bot commands to create a post. The information for this is found in #find-a-game. The bot commands start with /looking-for and you can type them anywhere on this server where you can type. After typing /looking-for, Discord will pop up 4 options, select the option that best fits what you're trying to post for. The bot will then give you a form to fill out and submit. Once submitted the bot creates the post in the specified channel and attaches a thread to it. Use the thread to communicate with interested parties, or to clarify things, or correct information, etc.
Ah, okay, so after I hit the 'looking for...' section, then I can add the information in a protocol? Thank you.
Simply type /looking-for right here in this channel
correct
Pick one of the options, fill out the form, submit, LFG post is created with attached thread.
Could someone help me out with starting wealth?
It's listed in your starting equipment for your class and background.
Which of those have you picked?
Hey everyone, pretty much brand new to DnD, donāt have any in game experience just watched a bunch of content online and was wondering if anyone could help me make a character later tonight so I could find a campagne to join
Sure, I'd be happy to help.
Would be great, mind if I DM you and we can set up a time to chat?

Have a go at making a character for practice. This is just an exercise to walk through the steps involved and get used to referencing the material in the Free Rules. To start with that, pick a class, species and background.

hey guys just asking on your thoughts on hiring a dungeon master? for context a table top board game center just opened up at our local mall and they said that we can only hire a dungeon master and his equipments
or should we just buy a DnD set

Greetings, fellow adventurers!
I'm Greg the Strategist. While I may be new to the player's side of the screen, my life revolves around crafting narratives and building worlds. My personal mission is to "make the ordinary mythic," and I believe D&D is one of the most powerful ways to do that.
I'm drawn to the idea of a shared legend, where a group works together to forge a story thatās greater than the sum of its parts. I'm looking for a patient, story-focused group that values character development and immersive role-play.
It's an honor to be here, and I can't wait to find a party to build a myth with.

how do i use dice? like d20 rolls and d8
?tag new dice
Dice
Dice add randomness to the game. The 20-sided die (d20) is the most important one youāll use. When the outcome of an action is uncertain, the game uses D20 Tests to determine success or failure. The higher your roll, the more likely it is that you succeed. The most common use for dice other than the d20 is to determine damage.
When you need to roll dice, the rules tell you how many dice to roll of a certain type, along with any numbers to add or subtract. For example, ā3d8 + 5ā means you roll three eight-sided dice, add them together, and add 5 to the total.
?tag new d20
D20 Tests
When the outcome of an action is uncertain, the game uses a d20 roll to determine success or failure. These rolls are called D20 Tests, and they come in three kinds:
- An ability check represents a creature using talent and training to try to overcome a challenge, such as forcing open a stuck door, picking a lock, entertaining a crowd, or deciphering a cipher.
- A saving throwāalso called a saveārepresents an attempt to evade or resist a threat, such as a fiery explosion, a blast of poisonous gas, or a spell trying to invade your mind.
- An attack roll determines whether an attack hits a target.
Does that help clarify things?
"2d8" would mean you roll two eight-sided dice and add their totals together.
You'll most likely only ever see that as a damage roll.
But anything that has you roll damage will state what to roll.

What's the deal with exp and leveling up?
How much exp do you get from enemies and how much is required to lv up?
Each level up requires a specific amount of exp, depending on your level. Every monster stat block tells how much exp it grants when defeated, which the DM has access to.
Many games don't even use exp at all, and use the Milestone method to level up!
What's the milestone method?
Whenever the DM feels like you've achieved something meaningful... you just level up! Simple as that. I feel like most games these days tend to use Milestone.
Hereās a great reference guide I just printed for my self. Also kudos forgetting your siblings involved and reading the players handbook
It says I donāt have access to the channel

when it comes to familiar summon, am i stuck with only one animal or can i chose with a different range but only summon one on the field?
It can only be the beasts listed in the spell and you can only have one familiar at a time.
Other classes, namely warlocks choosing the pact of the chain invocation, can summon stronger familiars with that spell.
It's mainly an utility spell. And who doesn't want a magical pet.

Hello!
If I wanted to make an Insidious [Horror Movie] TTRPG based game, how should I go about that?
I'm new here and to the pc community if someone with knowledge could dm me id love some help
Iām also new and maybe someone could teach me as well that will be greatly appreciate it
We don't really have the ability to teach folks one-on-one, but look at the rules (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024) and #learn-to-play! Feel free to ask questions as you work your way through that info.

Unfortunately thereās more of you then there are of us, so one on one tutoring is difficult
We might be able to do it sometimes but donāt bet on it
I mean, Iām down to schedule a group. Call if you guys are.
Iām not comfortable sharing my voice online, but I can text
You can just ask a question you have! No need to wait.
im not looking for tutoring for dnd i know how to play. im looking for answers to like 5 questions
I did - i was just waiting xD
What are your questions?
If I wanted to make an Insidious [Horror Movie] TTRPG based game, how should I go about that?
That's more #non-dnd-topics if you're talking about more general TTRPG design. And I bet you'd have better luck in a gamedev Discord or the like!
Thanks
Oh we can do that. Ask away!

A lot of folks who play online roll dice through platforms that often include dice rollers and maps/tokens. These are virtual tabletops (VTTs). It varies from group to group which VTT they use, if any.

Hey, just joined. I've never touched DND a day of my life. I have somewhat of an idea of what it's like from videos I've seen off YouTube and TikTok, but I can only assume.
I also kinda already have a character I wanna use if I end up doing anything, but may need a lil help scaling his power and choosing his class.
Well if you want character build feedback we have a whole channel for it: #character-discussion
As for learning the core game rules and mechanics, check out #learn-to-play and the free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
And ask any specific questions as you run into them.
Welcome to the server!
I just got my first ever DND kit in the mail and I have no idea where to start.
I have done šsolutely nothing to start playing and donāt feel like reading 63 pages. What do I need to do to start playing? (Also i have no one to play with me so Iām being the only player and the DM.
Honestly, read 63 pages š
We also have #learn-to-play and the free basic rules (first 2 chapters are what I'd consider essential reading): https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
Or at least some of them
I guess if it tells me everything then alright
Question: Iām not in any active campaign, but I wanna fill out some character sheets for when I join one. What is a good catch all starting level? Level 1? Level 3? 7?
You don't have to memorize this - it's more of get a feel for it
1, 3 and 5 are probably the most common starting levels in my experience
Oh ok
Best to check with you next D&D group - I'd start at level 1 and maybe work up to a level 5 character to learn how the character sheet works and how to level up.
I appreciate the input! Thanks
So start at level 1 and work up when needed
Does any body know if the spellbook cards thats on sale for classes is still valid for phb2024?
As far as I know, no one has printed spell cards for 2024 spells yet
Possibly
If the spells weren't reprinted, they'd still be valid. But hard to say for a specific set
Iāve never played dnd before but Iāve known about it for ages and wanted to play it. Just asking for advice on where to start I know some of the basic mechanics of the game. Where should I start and if I ever do want to play are there online campaigns

Hello! The above bot will send you to another channel that should give you some insight on the rules. The free basic rules are in there too, and go to #find-a-game once you learn how to play and have made a character!
The character you make isnāt necessarily the one youāll play in the campaign, but itās important to know how.
If you got any specific questions, feel free to ask here!
is it possible to run a campaign with just a DM and one player?
Yes although be aware that D&D is a game designed for 1 DM and typically 3-6 players. But yes, playing as 1 DM and 1 player (often referred to as Duet play) can be done.
It usually doesn't go well.
There are prewritten modules designed for one player and a GM though, but I can't vouch for their quality.
What sort of challenges have you faced when running 1 on 1?
^id assume there will be a lot of difficulties in combat, namely since in a party of 5 there are a lot of different targets for the enemies to attack; on the other hand, if its 1 on 1 D&D, then the solo character could feel extremely overwhelmed easily if there are even more than 3 very weak monsters.
Tl;DR it makes combat balancing difficult
There are other TRPGs built for this kind of game, or even GM-less games
Thank you for answering, but I was actually wondering what BelphƩgor has encountered that didn't go well.
And some of the puzzles and challenges in D&D games become issues as well. A lot of these expect a party of 3-6 characters to work together and use their character's skills and resources to resolve the problem. With just 1 player (and thus just 1 character), some problems might not be possible to resolve as designed.
I don't think these issues are insurmountable but
Sidekicks help Iāve seen many live plays where there has been an episode of DM and one player but they had a few side kicks to help
Indeed. I've run a game with two players where each had a sidekick. That worked out quite well and I didn't have to adjust the adventure.
1 DM + 1 Player could only mostly run a solo campaign
But instead of the player reading out the scenarios its the DM doing the reading
Hi guyss, Im new to D&D and have made my character (unsure if I did it correctly though) and want to find a party
Have you gotten the rules down? Also please send your character here so we can review and correct any potential mistakes
Letās do this before we go to #find-a-game

For races that have different variations over the years (Aasimar had 3 subraces in Volo's, and in Monsters of the Multiverse they went back to just being a standalone race again), is it up to the DM when it comes to which versions are preferred?
Or is there a default option that people go to when presented with race updates like these
By default, it's assumed that the latest version is what is used.
A DM can theoretically circumvent this, but that's on a case by case basis, and isn't something a player should assume.
Also, Aasimar is not a class.
I said races
You referred to it having subclasses, and then called it a class within your parenthesis.
Apologies, brain must be thinking of two different things while writing

Hey guys, how do you rule lighting?
Can you make dim light somehow during bright light?
Lets say with some weapon or abilities? Or does the brightest light win (if its not direct spell like darkness)?
For example:
1, Weaopn effect: "Sunlight. The swordās luminous blade emits Bright Light in a 15-foot radius and Dim Light for an additional 15 feet. The light is sunlight. "
2, or class ability: "The sphere is centered on you, has a 30-foot radius, and is filled with dim light."
Or is it just common sense rule? Like if its night you make it dim light. If its spell effect you make it dim, even during day, and if its day/bright, weapon that makes dim light just dont overwrite it, or does it still take effect?
Just thinking about invocations if we can make some reliable uses for:
One with Shadows: While youāre in an area of Dim Light or Darkness, you can cast Invisibility on yourself without expending a spell slot.
Did you mean to post in #dm-discussion?
yooo thx a lot for this
sure i can, didnt know if its noobie question or dm question, could be both, will ask there np

?dmtips
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isnāt competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
There you go.
Also this channel if for DND newcomers, you will want #dm-discussion for DM tips.
there is also this ddb post with some helpful stuff: https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/dungeons-dragons-discussion/dungeon-masters-only/6695-so-youre-going-to-dm-tips-for-beginners?srsltid=AfmBOorok_wru2o7OWlh_ckfQqNGHUN9AJjG3QA1e05xaBKvwNw6BNOs

Are entertainer routines important for gameplay or is to for flair?
Can you clarify what you mean?
I've decided to give my character the entertainer background and I'm adding stuff like his equipment but does the entertainer routines like jester or fire-eater matter?
No, they don't have any mechanical impact, but it would give flavor (narrative distinctiveness) to your character.
Oh, no. You don't need to specify an individual way that your character entertains. It can be helpful or flavorful for RP, but it's not mechanically necessary.
I'll throw it in for spice, but does it go in features and traits
Put it wherever. The character sheet is mainly a reference for you.

That would be your modifier, youāre gonna need to do some math there
That's meant to write your total bonus in. Your bonus derives from the skills main ability score (for example, for acrobatics that's dexterity, for athletics that's strength), plus your proficiency bonus if you're proficient.
So itās [Stat-modifer]. + 2 for now
So 2+2?
Depends. Which skill are we talking about in this example?
Dexterity
If the stat the skill uses has a +2 modifier , then yes
How much Dex do you have?
And your dexterity score is 14 or 15? then yes
I random rolled so its 9
Then itād be +1 if you have proficiency in the skill. -1 otherwise
I don't have dice sooooo, I can't put numbers in the small boxes TwT
Man I need to buy dice :v
So +3 not +4
Online dice could work
True
You donāt necessarily need dice to write in stats
If you google "roll 1d20" or any dice notation, it will give you a dice roller.
Oh okay
Could you clarify this statement?
(As a reminder to all newcomers here: rolling your stats is fun, but not recommended unless you have a DM who is watching you roll them.)
Rolling for stats is usually done under DM supervision anyways. For newbies I recommend using Standard Array or Point Buy
cuz we donāt trust you, sorry
So the proficiency bonus plus modifier
Yes
So it' equals +3 because my modifier is +2 and my proficiency is +1
Yes. If your modifier is -1 and you add your bonus +2, you'll end up with a total of +1 on that check.
If you're curious how the modifier is arrived at, check this chart:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game#AbilityModifiersTable
wait what are those
Stat modifier can be calculated by (stat-10)/2
So for dex it's 9-10
Standard array and point buy? Theyāre systems we use to determine character stats.
i know that i mean how do they work
ive barely heard of dnd and i want to learn for my girlfriend
/2, so -0.5, so round down to -1
^
So my modifier is -1?
What is your Dex score
9
Itās -1 then yes
For some reason that link doesn't skip to the correct section. This one does.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character#Step3DetermineAbilityScores
can my character be a vulpin wizard?-
Brb gonna fix my modifiers
Huh weird Iāll remember that for next time
whats a vulpin? some kind of foxperson?
Mhm
Vulpin isn't an official species, so you might have a harder time finding a DM who would accept that.
Oh
well aside from homebrew vulpin species, you might be able to reflavor an existing species
like, tabaxi or shifter
Ah
Always could reflavour, but ye-Omegon ya bet me to it
Ok so my scores are:
Strength 17, modifier+3
Dex. 9, modifier -1
Con. 12, +1
Intelligence 9, -1
Wisdom 11, +0
Charisma 10, +0
Is this correct?
Yes
I'll save that
Hi
Have you decided which skills you have proficiency in?
Animal handling and athletics
Hello
Hru nugget
So for animal handling, athletics, acrobatics and performance, have a +2
(On top of your original modifier)
Iām good. I think.
anyone want to form a party for a one-shot? i want to get a feel for the game
I dunno if there's a race that is similar to a fox
You should read the basic rules and have a foundational understanding of a game before you play
So acrobatics=+1
Animal handling=+2
Athletics=+5
Performance=+2
i do, i read it already
A tabaxi (cat)? And just reflavour it. Foxes are fast and furry too.
If you want to use this server to find a group take a read through #find-a-game
Oh, then sure. #find-a-game
Looks about right
Yeah, a tabaxi is a cat, not sure it can be a fox as well
Well itāll never be as good as just homebrewing the entire species, but itās the closest thing I can think of
Oh
And homebrewing the entire species is gonna make it harder to get a table
So that's the modifiers done is passive wisdom, inspiration, initiative and AC stuff for in game
Reflavoring doesnāt necessarily mean changing what a species is in universe. It just means to change the aesthetic of something without changing the mechanics.
Initiative is -1 for you
How so?
Itās just your dexterity modifier
Ok and AC, I have a trait that gives me +12 without armour but is armour I should already have
Depends on the campaign, but there IS starting equipment that you can often get. I canāt remember what barbarians get tho.
Sorry was typing a message, yeah thereās not unfortunately.
So the closest thing is a Tabaxi
The savings throw box and attacks and spellcasting box are empty what goes there?
As for the other items:
- Passive Wisdom (Perception) is equal to 10 + your Perception modifier
- Passive Wisdom (Insight) is equal to 10 + your Insight modifier
- Inspiration will be marked if your DM gives it to you and will be erased if you expend it.
- AC is calculated by default as 10 + your Dex modifier, but it might change based on certain features or armor you get
Not sure if a tabaxi can be a fox too -,-
Saving throw modifiers will be equal to the relevant ability score modifier + your proficiency bonus if youāre proficient in them
So my AC is 9 and including my unarmored defence I have 21 AC
As before reflavoring is just changing the narrative aesthetic of an existing option
21 AC?! yeah smtā wrong there
Probably
Ah
Reflavors are technically DM dependent but usually approved as long as it doesnāt clash with the aesthetic of the campaign (e.g. trying to reskin a character to be sailor moon like in a grimdark campaign)
From what I read Unarmored defence gives +12
How so? Itās Dex mod + CON mod
AH FORGOT TO ASK what species are you?
Gnome
Aight no extra skills then. I believe some species do that.
Could you run me through calculating AC?
-1 and +1
The odds they cancel eachother out is mental
Youāll want to wear armour (medium, preferably)
My character (not in the dnd universe) is a fox aka a kitsune, not sure what he will be in the dnd universe
What class are you Goose?
Barbarian
Ah I see
Definitely want armour
Thatās usually why I recommend using Point Buy or Standard Array š
So when I wear armour I redo the process but swap out 10 with the armour's ac
Tbh Iām sure you could rearrange your stats to make it a little better
Probably
I genuinely donāt think they could
Itās this
Iād swap to a different official method
Agreed
Should I do it now?
Might as well
Substitute your AC for the armourās AC, not 10
I don't got armour
Ah drat Barbs donāt get nothin in 2014
They donāt start with armor in either version
So what other methods do I use to get my modifiers and base stats
I correct myself
Barbs donāt get nothin
Are you in a game? If not just use the stat generation methods that starofthelight mentioned
15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8. This?
Looks like standard array, so yes. Put those stats anywhere you want.
For a Barbarian Iād recommend swapping the 10 & the 12
Honestly I think it really only matters depending on your choice of background in 2024
So strength is best at 15?
Since you can make the 13 a 14 with the +1 from the beginning ASIs
Barbarians LOVE hitting hard
So yes. Bonk stronk
Wait I'm confused because yous are saying swap some numbers around but they're already there
Just put 15 in strength, 13 in dexterity, 14 in constitution, 10 in intelligence, 12 in wisdom and 8 in charisma
And now I -10 from them and I get modifiers
-10 then halve, but yes
Round down?
Ye
My brains not working right today, when halving negatives do they go up or down
-0.5 rounded is -1
So the modifiers should be:
Strength +2
Dex. +1
Con. +2
Intelligence 0
Wisdom+1
Charisma -2
That was a typo
Then yes, thatās good
So now I have to put the modifiers for all the skills
Is this with your racial/background stats?
I've lost the sauce now
Youāre playing on 2014 rules correct?
Most likely
Considering entertainer doesnāt exist in 2024, I agree
Increase your intelligence by 2
Which is odd for a barbarian, but youāre a gnome so we donāt have much of a choice.
And for skills it's (modifier) + proficiency bonus
Do you know if your DM owns Tashaās Cauldron of Everything or otherwise is using the optional rules contained in that book?
I'm not even in a party I'm just making a character for when I get into one
Just making sure, you want to use 2014 rules specifically right?
If that's what's best for this abomination of a character
The entertainer background exists in 2024, itās just in the PHB not the Basic Rules
Iād recommend using 2024 rules since Barbarian got a good amount of buffs
Oh it does?
I stand corrected
Mustāve missed it
Yup, itās a str/dex/cha background with the musician feat
Should I focus on doing the skills or attacks and spellcasting
Skills you can do right now if youāve finalized your ability array
Attacks will be dependent on what weapons you use
That's like str, dex, con right?
Barbarians donāt get spellcasting by default but certain features you get may allow you to cast a spell
Like minor Illusion and speak with animals
In which case your save DC and spell attack modifier will be dependent on the exact feature that gives you the ability to cast a spell
What features are allowing you to cast those spells?
I believe it's just level 1 forest gnome
The 2014 forest gnomeās Speak with Small Beasts feature isnāt the same as the spell Speak with Animals
As for the minor illusion bit, the subrace page says that your spellcasting ability for the spell is intelligence
Am I not doing 2024 because of barbarian
Wdym? Barbarians exist in 2014
Ah mb I thought you were using the 2014 gnome option
No like for buffs
Side note, 2024 is forwards compatible with 2014, so you could theoretically pick 2014 gnome for 2024 barb and be fine but I digress
Huh
Oh wait yeah weāre definitely 2024
Anyways, the Gnomish lineage states you get to choose intelligence, wisdom, or charisma for your spellcasting ability for the purposes of casting those species spells
Personally I recommend choosing whatever stat of those 3 you set highest
So just pick highest stat?
Yup
So in the Attacks and Spellcasting box at the name-atk bonus-damage/type I put the spell there
Minor Illusion and Speak with Animals arenāt attacks so youād put them in your spellcasting section of the sheet
Where thereās a bunch of lines to put spells
Ok
Youād generally mark any other relevant information such as spell components or if you have any free castings (e.g. 1/long rest for Speak with Animals)
Pretty much
You donāt have to write the full spell text. Most people just look up the spell description when they want to cast it in my experience
Don't I have unlimited uses of minor illusion so I don't need components
I'll just simplify
Minor illusion is a cantrip so yes itās resourceless. Components arenāt only consumed items (consumed material components)
Components also include verbal (audible sound) and somatic (hand gestures)
So basically do I write name, stat?
As long as at least the name is written in the correct spot (e.g. Minor Illusion under the cantrip section) you can put anything else you want that helps you
Speaking of which, which stat did you choose as your spellcasting ability?
I picked intelligence because it has +2 modifier but has a base stat of 10
Wisdom has a base stat of 12 with a modifier of +1
When it comes to recording your ability scores only put down the final total for each, and the attendant modifier (10-11 is +0, 12-13 is +1 and so on).
The modifier is the important bit as it's what adds to your ability score rolls and helps determine your spell save DC.
If your intelligence is 10 the modifier should be +0, not +2
Nugget was probably referring to 2014 gnomes who get a +2 to your intelligence score by default
Oh
(Assuming Tashaās optional rules are not used)
Importantly itās a bonus directly to the base score instead of the modifier
For the 2024 character sheet?
I think mines 2014
Ah yeah I see
It's icespire
Hereās the 2024 version:
https://media.dndbeyond.com/compendium-images/phb/downloads/DnD_2024_Character-Sheet.pdf
Hello
In the 2014 sheet it should show a cantrip section, though it might also be labeled as 0-level spells:
https://media.wizards.com/2016/dnd/downloads/5E_CharacterSheet_Fillable.pdf
It has a space below the name-atk bonus-damage/typ
Kinda new to dnd
Hallo. Should we help you get started?
Or are you here to say hi?
Hey nugget what's the formula for skills
The relevant ability mod + proficiency bonus (if proficient) + any other modifiers (if a feature says it gives a bonus)
Proficiency bonus (+2 in your case) + stat modifier
Then anything else if itās stated explicitly as a feature
Hmm interesting. I donāt own the physical icespire peak set so Iām not sure how they modified the character sheets to show an attack/damage section for the spellcasting section.
Itās the name of the attack, then the to-hit modifier, then the damage, then the damage type
I've done the proficient ones first and I'm gonna assume theyre right
But the normal official versions both have those parts sectioned into the regular āattacks & spellcastingā box
uuuhhh sorreh I was focus on my game
Wait, thatās probably where the confusion is. The sheet should have a second or third page to list all your spells out
Third!?
I did create a character but I never manage to participate to a dnd at all
All DM never showed up twice
Have you looked at #find-a-game ?
Wow. Thatās rough
Quite confusing
Nope no third page
The 2014 sheet has 3 pages to it that I linked above. The second page of the 2014 sheet is mainly narrative/descriptive stuff for your character (e.g. appearance) and the third page is where you would write all of your spells
The 2024 sheet condensed it to 2 pages
I've got the first and second but not a third
just an odd question that i think i already know the answer to.
is there any class feature or feat that makes spells or abilities that are active for x amount of time happen all at once
In any case if you wanted to fill in the āattacks & spellcastingā box specifically:
- under attack bonus for minor illusion write your save DC (8 + Wisdom modifier + prof bonus). Under the damage/type write any components it has and its action economy (if it takes an action, bonus action, etc)
- for speak with animals leave the attack bonus blank since the spell does not involve an attack roll. Under damage/type write any components as before as well as its spell level and how many free casts you get (1/LR)
Could you name an example? Normally as long as spell effects have a duration they overlap as long as they donāt have the same name (come from the same thing), in which cast the stronger effect overrides the weaker one
just was curious if you could get aura of vitality to grant all the health in one turn instead of waiting the full min lol
Minor illusion says S, M and speak with animals says V, S
That would not be possible then
Speak with animals should be easy to cast since itās only verbal and somatic.
Minor illusion as per the spell has a material component so youād need to acquire it somehow and have it held in hand to cast the spell
Oh ok
I think minor illusions material component is just a piece of fleece so it shouldnāt be hard to acquire. Iām sure most DMs would allow you to start with it
guys, what is the collab in the server's banner?
Saving throws will be equal to the relevant ability mod + proficiency bonus if youāre proficient with them
Which will be determined almost entirely by your starting class
Im gnome barbarian so is it just strength
Stranger things
Almost. Itās strength and constitution saving throws, as per your class page
So everything else is just the modifier
I think I'm done with the stats, I'm going for now, goodnight
Sleep well
hey so.... i've gotten REALLY interested in dnd after finding out its not too far off from rp-ing, its just that the character sheet on dnd and beyond is slightly overwhelming but i have made a character !!! juts confused about everything else š
That's really nice to hear!
If youāre feeling overwhelmed, I recommend just learning how to make a character, basic ability checks, modifiers, core gameplay, classes and combat.
As well as short and long rests.
(Simple, but many players learn them later for some reason)
ill definitely read on them!!
Do you understand these first?
its just that youtube tutorials end up being extremely long but empty
Well that's what we're here for. Videos are quite hit or miss.
like i kno almost all of these, except ability checks and modifiers
So if I told you to roll for perception, you wouldn't know what to do?
extremely hit or miss. watched two seperate videos one said clerics are healers other said clerics are murderers
Clerics are both. They're absolute units.
up to my knowledge you'd have to roll yes but there's that d2 thingie ykwim
d20?
lowk my favorite class so far
Great to hear. We need more supports.
Roll a D20, add modifiers. If it passes the Difficulty class, then great. If not, then fail.
i onlyplay support dude, you wont catch me on damage
20 sided dice.
Well clerics can hit hard, so I guess I will.
yup ik about those!! just that i remember most of avraes controls cuz we had beef in the past
kept giving me 2s every roll
lord have mercy
Some won't
You get this?
modifiers is my biggest issue. is it like, increased luck for example? and the difficulty class?
Modifiers are dependent on your proficiencies and stats, at least for skill checks
Your ability modifier is (Stat-10)/2, and your proficiency modifier is dependent on your level
so like, if my character has high intellegence, he can do... something?
in like that specific check
He can investigate or make history checks well, yes
As well as Arcana
(Magic stuff)
ohhhh okay!
This is what I always recommend. It's fun to make characters and through the process of making them, you naturally need to look up rules as you go, so it's just an easier and more fun way to learn the rules than reading through each book start to finish.
And if he has high strength, he'd be good at athletics
i think.... i think ill maybe thug this one out when i reach that point
Are you using dnd-beyond?
making a character waas my favorite thing ever, dnd and beyonf made it easier to understand
DND-Beyond does it for you
yup i used it !
Then when you're doing a skill check, look next to the skill on your character sheet an it'll give you the modifier
add that on top of your roll, and if you pass the DC you'll pass the check
@hearty blaze May we talk in dm for confirming something?
by pass, you mean roll over a specific number right?
Why dms
Kinda private
Meet or beat
sure...
makes sense now!! thank you!!
Woohoo
huzzah!!
Claws are natural weapons right? So would they work with dual wielder?
Iād check #dnd-rules to make sure but it should be no for both versions of the feat. Dual Wielder concerns melee weapons, a distinct category than natural weapons. Unless the feature granting you claws considers them a wielded melee weapon they would not apply for Dual Wielder
Taking Tabaxi as an example, their claw feature simply allows claws to be used for unarmed strikes, which doesnāt count as a wielded weapon (for 2014 DW) nor as a melee weapon (for 2024 DW)
There is a feat that allows dragonborns to have claws, too, but the same thing applies
hey where can i find a group to play with
Can I put a custom lineage on my character sheet?-
I'd check with your DM & group before doing anything outside of the free basic rules.
Custom lineages might not mesh well with the kind of game/campaign the group is playing.
In your campaign?
Ask your GM
Custom Lineage is an official player option released as part of the book Tashaās Cauldron of Everything
Oh
There's nothing wrong wth picking it inherently. What Undying Noob is getting at is that CL is effectively a "blank template" that's a blanket solution to when a player wants to play a species outside of the official options. Which could be as simple as "I'm half dwarf, half orc" to as complex as "I'm a human that has been touched by all four elemental planes" to as silly as "I am a sentient amalgamation of baguettes arranged in a humanoid shape"
Which means you should talk to your DM as to why you want to pick Custom Lineage in the first place.
Kk
Hey yall! Names Pigeon and im looking to play DnD. I tired once years ago but unfortunately it was ruined by a player who made themselves as the main character and quit early. My love for baldurs Gate really sparked my interest in trying DnD again. Hell I know there is a Mass Effect DnD book iut there that really has me itching to try. Any groups out there looking to start a new campaign or dont mind adding a plus one? Again im. A newbie so some hand holding required.

can anyone tell me what books im missing that have these subclasses?
wild soul

drakewarden
I know the last two are from Fizbanās Treasury of Dragons
Oh, and the cleric domains are from the 2014 Playerās Handbook with the exception of Death Domain which is from the 2014 DMās Guide.
Iām unsure about the third party content.
Um hi
Im new here. So umā¦is there any guide for newbie in dnd?
