That's up to you and your DM. Don't think of a game mechanic that you need to use. Think of them as people, that are just part of your backstory. They are friendly to you, and want to help you out, but they're just normal people
am just trying to get a rough understanding on how they function
this server has been useful once again
They don't "work" like anything. They are just NPCs that you can talk to and give them small tasks to do. They aren't a game mechanic
yea i get it just a story element not a labor source or bodyguards
sidenote to my earlier ask Fast Character . com provides an awsome helping hand it still creates something 90% alike to the base 5e char sheet buts its much simpler then anything i have ever seen
they can quite easily be a labour source to be honest, if the DM allows it. They could be making you some money running some business in your stead. The 2024 bastion rules talk about this, and its been done in lots of games
just not an active help in your adventuring really
am gonna finalise this disgussion with if you want them to do something ask the dm if they are able to
yep exactly
am gonna make them heist a wizards tower so my paladin can get his hands on 9th level spell slots (joke obviously)
i mean i would allow it in my game. gonna be a real shame when the knight finds out his two loyal retainers got immediately killed by trying to open the door without a Knock spell š
when the dm says roll 4d6 and drop the lowest
Heyy would anyone be willing to be like a mentor to me? I have basically no experience and would love for someone to help me get the basics down : ,)

I decided ima pick up DND for the first time. Usually I like summoners/supports in RPG games. Can soneone help me find the main class for me?
Depends on how much you already know of the game.
I would first look at the base rules, and understand how the game work.
For your class choice, I would ask in #character-discussion
how do i get started for DND? i already have an idea for a character but i dont know any lore or abilities etc

I reccomend using the players handbook to answer these questions, it will tell you the abilities of races, classes, and other things. Lore is often found on websites. To find a game, go to #looking-for-players
I made a D&d club in my school my problem is I don't know how to freaking DM help meeeeee

?dmtips
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isnāt competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
Thank you so much bro thank you thank you
"For the d8 you need all three of the die. Low/low/low is 1. Low/high/low is a 3." is what the guy said to make 3 d6's work Å
like a d8 with little to no change to luck
how does this exactly work???
low is 1-3, high is 4-6 btw
check the quora post for more context
wait nevermind i get it now
What is that in reference to?

Hi everyone! Iām Luigi and Iām new at D&D!
Same
Hi you guys im Zeke and i and my friend wanted to get into dnd and were very new but i based my character off of an album by icp so if i do anything wrong on accident please let me know!
Hiya everyone! My names Marianne. Been playing DND off and on for 10+ years. Ranger-Sorceress Half-Elf was my first character and I love her so much.
Hey im Arrkin, ive played a couple of times in the last year, but have never found a lot of people interested in playing a game. Please help me if I get something wrong!
Welcome everyone! Make sure to check out the helpful links posted above and in the pins, and feel free to directly ask if you have questions.
HI everyone I'm Rogia and I'm new to D&D!
Hello there I never played dungeon and dragons but since I played baldur's gate 3 and loved it I was wondering if this was a server were you can play dungeon and dragons?
Iād kinda like to have a group where none of us know how to play D&D and we all just figure it out
yooo what's up guys
I am new to all of this DnD stuff, what would you guys say its "the basics" to start with?
Welcome everyone! I'll try to answer everyone's questions here:
LFG on this Server. To use this server to find a group, read through #find-a-game carefully as it contains the instructions on how to both make a group-finding post on this server as well as responding to others' posts. Newbie-friendly or newbie-composed groups aren't always explicitly advertised, so it's always good to ask. It's important to note that advertising or soliciting games outside the proper channels is against server rules.
LFG Resources. This server isn't the only place to find a group! The wider you cast a net the better chance you have of getting into a game. Online options include other TTRPG or unofficial D&D servers, social media sites like Reddit's r/lfg & Facebook Groups, and lfg forums like those found as part of D&DBeyond. For in person games try checking your local school/uni clubs, libraries, and game stores!
Where to Start Learning. Check out #learn-to-play and flip through the Free Rules linked in that channel & this channel's pins. The first few sections cover the bulk of the game's rules including how to make a character and what you can do with said character both in & out of combat. Don't feel pressured to memorize anything but do try to familiarize yourself; making a practice character is a great way to do that! While it's really nice to have a DM personally help you through it, the more work you can do on your end before joining a game will help you transition into a table faster. Of course, we're here to help answer any specific rules-learning questions along the way.
Now for more specific questions:
What part has confused you about character creation?
okey so I did some research and I got two questions,
1 Where does paying for races or some other stuff limit yourself? I got to use the free stuff 100% if I am not gonna spend any money or can I for example be a minotaur for free somehow?
and 2 when creating a character, should I do it with the DM or do it by myself? maybe the setting of the plot doesn't match up or anything
Iām replying to this part but I can answer both questions. You can find the dnd 5e players hand book for free pdf believe it or not. That has all of the playable races. Being like a monster Minotaur you would have to ask your dm then look in the monster manual. Then copy down its abilities.
The only complicated part you could talk to your dm about is your characters background.
ooookey, I think I get it, another question
is there any way to make like, custom races? something that isnt from the books?
I think I need to talk with DMs about those, right?
Minotaur is playable in Volo's Guide to Monsters and Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse
Minotaur from both of these functions wildly differently than MM Minotaur
Okay so there are different sources I just usually use the MM because itās a physical book I now like the back of my hand. Practical really.
okey yeah but what about this?
These aren't alternatives to playing Minotaur and similar monsters. Adapting a monster from the MM into a playable species is homebrew
Tasha's Cauldron to Everything has Custom Lineage. Your DM has the right to ban this option.
ohhh okey so I can be anything I just need DMs approval, thank you mate š
You can absolutely not be anything, but you can be a lot
I mean yeah I know, I can't be a gigantic mecha with missils and fire throwers, but I CAN be a cat wizard of some sorts or something
It just needs to be reasonable
You should consider using Tabaxi - which are cat people - instead of Custom Lineage
It was an example tho
Hey I canāt seem to send photos on here I found hombrew Minotaur
but like can I use them for free? or I gotta pay?
Custom Lineage is mostly for optimizing or if there's something that really doesn't work with any other official species
Tasha is a book you need to pay for
Again, you don't need to homebrew Minotaur since that's already official unless you dislike how it is officially
Suggesting homebrew options to newbies is a bad idea
I donāt mean to argue but i just thought Iād look in there. Not like I could find this in 5e hand book anyway. I got curious, to me it didnāt look that complicated
I didnāt read the last message. I think you got this.
heyloooo! what do i do?
I am guessing custom lineage is also better for a more lore and roleplay focused gameplay
I wanna get into D&D but I very literally have 0 clue about anything except the upmost simple ideas

So is there a place on discord I can actually play dnd? Or find people to meet up with for it?
Yup, this server has separate channels for it. Check #find-a-game for how it works.

I want to be a perytopher (peryton centaur), but I know thatās not an option. Iād be happy as a centaur mage. Iām so new, I just figured out VC means voice chat. But I promise I will catch on.
hi
Welcome and glad to have you here.
Check out the Basic rules online.
That info covers about 90%.
Also there are great Youtube starting videos online to look for.
You can start with WASD20.
thank you
I would start by finding a game session online.
There are tons of them.
I have one but it does have some requirements.
THere are many on the LFG channel.
Also this server has many very helpful folks willing to answer any question.
A LOT of knowledge here.
The community is what makes DnD great.
You can if your dm allows warforged style custom li eage and artificer!!
HI im relatively new to d and d and was wondering whats the best class and race for beginners to play
not too simple but not like a wizard or smth
Whatever you want that is not druid or wizzard
im thinkin arcane trickster
you can be an armorer artificer
hmmm, thats pretty smart actually
though id look more at what mechanics you want, because most dms will let you reskin stuff
known as reflavoring
Armorer fits the mecha fantasy better, though Artillerist fits the missiles and fire throwers fantasy better
Neither fulfill the fantasy well, tho
You could definitely reflavor Armorer as casting Fireball by launching a missile, or Firebolt with a flamethrower
artillerist has the issue of the protector cannon being way better than the other 2
Just get a paragraph of the BIG lines in, session 0 will help you flesh everything out
Your DM should help you with incorporating your backstory into the campaign and also help you out if you're new
Think I should get the playerās handbook?
Hi, Iām kind of new here by the way what are common skin tones for a? Tiefling of abyssal heritage.
Whatās going on fellas, new to DnD in general but have been interested in DMing. Really excited to get into it. Golfing had been kicking my ass so I need a side hobby.

Hello chat! I'm also a newcomer, and I've been searching people to play with for a long time since I discovered this hobby.
Y'all can call me Ness, and I'm italian so, warning that english is not my first language, plus, I'm not super good at improvising roleplay since I've barely done two sessions in my entire life, and in my native language- despite this, pretty much know the rules, already have a ton of characters I want to create and use, and I'd love to get to know all of you guys!

Yeahh I get you completely. I suck at actually TALKING in english
Polish in my case š
My accent is so thick I could slice it with a knife
Incredibly relatable lmao
i really want to play d&d but i dont know where to go to actually play. i just finished making my character

How do you make characters for DND?
does anyone want to help me make my new dnd character with me? im new fso itd be really appreciated!
ever make a character for dnd 5th edition?
yes, a few, but none with too much success of my satisfaction lol
are you building the character for a specific campaign/game/one shot?
no, im building i guess a template character that i can later adapt to a campaign. i have some lore or story arc i want to implement nonetheless but not campaign specific
no need to send me a friendo
i try to be friendly, it costs nothing and makes everyone involved feel better
very true
so what issues are you having making a character then?
figuring out what background and alignment they should have. his backstory is a bit split but basically he is a sorcerer former cleric who lost the love of his life died in battle he tries everything in his clerical powers to save them to no avail. so, he renounces his party, re;igion, life, beiefs, and turns to dark magic. so im havung a hard time figuring out what would pair well for that lol
sorry for the info dump
alignment is pretty š¤·
yeahhh
really doesn't matter anymore, i don't worry too too much about it for 5e characters
okay thats good
as long as their goals/attitude don't impede the party (specifically don't upset the other players) it's very meh
i see backstory as what they were doing just before they became an adventurer, so for this case the acolyte background seems pretty obvious
his attitude is more or less, "leave me alone"
and i was thinking acolyte but i wasnt sure because he left that church but i guess its background for a reason lmao
that healps alot
the other school of thought is "what gives me the best bonuses"
HAHA real, i am keeping that in play fs i just want to keep him a well rounded character lorewise first.
i think that always churns out good pcs
wym r rated lol just like groy and deep stroy type stuff/
well not so much gore ok sorry :3
NOONO youre good i js didnt understand
is fine
What do you roll for remembering a memory? Like a flashback
Like a performance check or insight/wisdom?
Sorry I felt like having a flashback needed a check.
Insight prob
oh... if you want to give your player a flashback...just do it?
unless for some reason you want the opportunity to fail
I seriously canāt find where to get a bag for like carrying dice fromš
look around your local game stores or purchase one off amazon or somewhere like that.
hi together. for our next campagne i wanted to switch my character sheet to an online version and i found some really helpful apps that also have the different features when you level up in one place. like when i level up to lv3 warlock it shows me all the different pact boons.
I wasnt able to find something like that with the 2024 rules though and wanted to ask if there is something like that.
Feeling a bit overwhelmed with all the different ressources online once i level up
DnDBeyond has a character builder for 2024. Other sites are unlikely to have a character builder until the System Reference Document for 2024 is released, which hasn't happened yet.
The community as a whole is still kind of figuring out how to handle the different versions.
i think i used the dndbeyond app a few months back and used something else since i cant access everything if i dont pay for the appropriate book
Ah. Well the issue then is that no other tools will provide more free content without being considered piracy, which then goes against TOS.
yea true
i do own a few of the books irl since i like collecting them
not really keen of paying for what i already own just to have digital access to it
You're really paying for convenience. You can already put all of the content you own into an empty character sheet by hand:
https://media.dndbeyond.com/compendium-images/free-rules/ph/character-sheet.pdf
the apps did help getting everything a bit more sorted and not having to go through multiple books since you have the normal level table, then an update for more stuff and another one for updated data
the character sheet itself isnt an issue. I just cant have it fully digital at that point if i dont pay.
which is my main issue
having 1 page with all the relevant info would be helpful but if that means i would need to buy every ressource again just to have digital access..
would be cool if they had like a discount or so
like if you own the books you get digital access for like 10 bucks extra
I get where you're coming from. Ultimately it's the product policy of WotC and has been brought up many times. I'm not sure where the best place to give this feedback would be, but probably in the DDB forums.
so for now the "best" option would be to just use a digital character sheet that lets you just type in stuff and then search the appropriate info from this page here i guess?
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/2190885-warlock?srsltid=AfmBOook7oh1CcHcCsIrTGk2aZtiVihTIYXBXPxEhBcGlSHXE92TYyMK#WarlockClassFeatures
Not sure how you mean. There are plenty of digital character sheets depending on your needs, they just can't offer paid content for free.
yea but a blank sheet wont get me the information that's what i mean.
Just trying to see where i can get all the info i need so i dont have to search 4 different websites for info
looking at the dndbeyond page this does seem to have all the info updated so i can just copy it i guess
Oh, so like finding the references that point you to in which books you could find which information? DDB does that fairly well, yeah.
exactly
although i noticed while going through the warlock section that it doesnt list the subclasses you get at lv3 outside of pact of the fiend.
the other 3 are missing it seems
Pact of the fiend is the subclass in the Basic Rules/SRD which is why it is typically the only one you see, as the others require buying the source
arent the others also in the normal PHB?
it even states that when i search for great old one with the search bar
oh ok i get it
need to buy the updated phb 2024 to access
Right. If you have the 2014 PHB you can still see the legacy subclasses on this summary page:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/7-warlock
Though as Lionn has mentioned, I don't think subclasses really have a good listing if you don't own the content.
Species is much better in that regard:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/species
i feared as much
so it's either buying books digital for convenience or scouring different websites for information people put out
RPGBot has class and subclass summaries, but not the full details obviously
https://rpgbot.net/2024-dnd/classes/warlock/
Yeah. Though people here are usually really quick and helpful in pointing it out if you're looking for something in particular.
for the few times i was here i got really good advice so i appreciate that
gonna check that out
i also found a page called roll20 or something like that which also had a lot of info on it
Quick question WHat is the most broken class Feature you guys know, cause i think i just found a contestant for that spot
MotM's shadar-kai
Racial feature or class feature?
Because thatās just a fairly powerful racial feature, nowhere near as powerful as some class features
Might be question for #optimization
Well I looked at your previous text. Thereās a pdf of the whole players hand book online. That could help with a lot of making the character. Google it I swear itās crazy what you can find online without having to pay the full price.
hi does the level 1 cleric begin with all he possible cleric spells?
and chose 3 after a long rest to prep?
Mixed them up in my head srry
Went in that chat with your hashtag it wasnt on my channel list, are there more hidden channels?
inid:customize, enable the "Magical Tinkering" category
You can only have a certain amount of the prepared and can change that after you take a short/long rest
but you can prepare any level 1 cleric spell from the cleric spell pool right?
like you already know all the level 1 cleric spells
You can pick any spell from the clerics spell list to prepare, yeah. The limit is in how many of them you can have prepared at the same time.
Yes you do, you just can“t have all of them prepared
oh ok its a bit weird that you only know 3 cantrips but know all the 15 or so level 1 spells flavorwise
hello

I am new to dnd. Like very new. I have played video games my whole life. I am doing a campaign with my brother DMing. Does anyone have any tips to avoid meta gaming? I have been told to avoid doing it but I find it very hard to not do, after playing years of video games it first instinct to do that sort of thing.
Sorry for long message
Don't meta game because it's fun imo not to
Best way to avoid it is to think in terms of what you as a player know versus what your character would know.
Example; if another character speaks with an NPC without your character there, you the player knows, but your character wouldn't know unless they were told.
Hmm, ok that makes sense. One of the things I was called out on was I realized the enemies armor class & said it out loud. Was later told I shouldnāt do that.
It's also totally okay to check in your DM if you're not sure
That's an honest mistake that happens to a lot of people
What matters is that you got what they meant and are learning š
I am having a lot of fun with the campaign weāre doing. But rn itās just my brother being DM for me & his gf lol. Ty for the advice lunarith. I donāt wanna ruin their campaign by doing stuff like that.
Happy to help
Oh hey, I have one more random question that itās ok if you donāt know.
But in the warrior of open hand monk subclass, you can apply topple Addle or push off of a unarmed atk. My thought is why would I ever use addle. Since itās purpose is to stop opportunity attacks, wouldnāt pushing them or making them prone do the same thing? Again sorry for the paragraph.
I'm not too sure actually, I haven't played Monk too much. #dnd-rules might have some insight on to how it would work.
Ok ty
Hello, I'm new to DnD and want to find a casual group to play with that would accept a newbie, I got into it because of Critical Role and BG3, I'm just now getting a dice set and tray etc. I am curious would it be online or find a group around the local area?
Hi im new to dnd i have done it like 5 times. Idk if this is the place but i am trying to make a charcter on dnd beyond. I had someone in the past help me make a character and i wanting to do that again. I'm wanting to make a Tortle Druid of the Shepard. Would anyone be able to help me out?
i had trouble using dnd beyond, ended up just doing it myself
i have used it before and really like it but it not letting me change from druid of the wild to of the shepard
my brother has player guide book that was a biiiig help with the class. race is less easy if you wanna do a unique race like that
isnt that a subclass you get past lvl 1? im new as well
yeah my charcter is lvl 3
If folks need help with character builds, check out #character-discussion
thanks
You can also access the free D&D rules - check the pinned message here in the channel.
That has the core game rules and also covers the steps for creating a character.
i think what i am needing is someone with the online book or something like that?
because i can make a druid but only of the land
Hi,
I'm the DM for my group of friends, all of us are brand new to D&D
Recently I found out that D&D beyond exists but we're having some issues with the characters there. I cannot find all the options from the player's handbook ( fighter's eldirtch knight martial archetype for example ) Can anyone help? What rules am I looking for?
So unless you own the book on DnDBeyond you can only get the free materials from the free rules

Newbie question, me and my friends are starting our first ever campaign and Iām wondering how much team composition matter in a lower stakes campaign? Like we already have a cleric and a wizard but I donāt want to play someone super tanky so do you guys think weād survive if I was like a rogue or is that frontline presence super important
A decent DM can keep things balanced
Rogue works best with someone else on the frontline, but it if you want something similar you could play a dexterity-focused fighter or ranger. If you really want to play rogue, it can still work by putting some extra points into constitution, best with the swashbuckler subclass.
Team composition isn't super important in a low stakes campaign
Hmmm okay thanks a lot Iāll def consider this
Hey guys, so i'm newer to DnD and want to run my first campaign... is it better to ask for more experienced players, so they can help me if I make mistakes? or would more experienced players only be expecting a more experienced DM to match them?
i'd honestly recommend a mix of players... but i always like having a mix of players
and how many should I have?
4 or 5 players total is a good place to be at
a couple of experienced players, a couple of newer players
cool! another fear I have, is recieving one of those players that you hear horror stories of... should I do some kind of screening beforehand, and how would I do so?
well... talk with all your prospective players and make sure they're normal human beings.
have a session 0, discuss the tones and themes, get a feel for everyone's comfort levels (including yours) and make sure the vibes mesh
not everyone is suitable for every table, and that's okay
horror stories are the outliers though, most games are normal.
horror stories? didn't even know you could do that in DnD

Any good recs?? I never considered horror for dnd.
_> i meant horror stories as in "rpg horror stories"
correct
Damn that sounded so cool
i mean, curse of strahd
hah i feel like an idiot, duh
lol I actually just finished that.
You can add supernatural horror elements to your game: Vampires, Werewolves, Ghosts, Zombies are all listed in the Monster Manual along with Lore.
If Eldritch horror is more your preference things like Mind Flayers, intellect devours, and other aberrations are also included.
You can use spooky atmospheric music, props, and environmental descriptions as well. Just think of your favorite horror movie or book and take elements from it to add in.
Beside the Aestethic reasons, why choose to play Monk instead of Fighter, Paladin, Barbarian, or Ranger?
Are you asking in Terms of play style? There are many reasons to play any class.
what makes Monk unique in Playstyle then?
?tag new monk
Monk
Dart in and out of melee while striking fast and hard
Monks use rigorous combat training and mental discipline to align themselves with the multiverse and focus their internal reservoirs of power. Different Monks conceptualize this power in various ways: as breath, energy, life force, essence, or self, for example. Whether channeled as a striking display of martial prowess or as a subtler manifestation of defense and speed, this power infuses all that a Monk does.
-# Suggested Standard Array assignment
Str. 12
Dex. 15
Con. 13
Int. 10
Wis. 14
Cha. 8
Likes: Unarmed combat
Complexity: High
Starting HP: 8 + Con. modifier
Yeah I donāt necessarily agree with that complexity bit but thatās what the game designers thought of the class.
Their main facet is how fast they are
But I find they are pretty straight forward and good at locking up an opponent so the rest of the party can either focus on other threats or work together on the target the monk has engaged.
Fast? like Skirmisher hit and run or high inisiative?
for the complexity I think the designer say its complex because of managing ki points
High dexterity but also unarmored movement, which gives a flat bonus to move speed
Move fast, use features to get extra strikes in and/or stun the target, some subclasses can really mess an enemy caster up (darkness/silence so they canāt see targets or canāt cast spells with verbal components)
Monks are a hit and run kind of fighter. Like most of those other classes go to one point and make that point the focus of attention. Monks kind of like move and strike all over the place and make chaos, pressuring multiple targets that can be more spread out.
They have a lot of options so I think that's why they are considered complex.
hey guys I've never played before but I have a lot of free time these days and I'm looking to get into it. Could someone teach me how to play/maybe take me through the whole process? (preferably on Roll20)
I suggest the #learn-to-play channel to get started.
Hello! I am new to this channel. Currently playing in one campaign
Any subclass can work for beginners, what matters is how you want to play.
Open Hand: Martial Arts
Shadow: Stealth Ninja
Elements: Magic / AtlA bending
should warn, though: the 2014 version of Elements monk suuuuuucks
Agreed
it gets a handful of spells and nothing else; it's bad to the point that reflavoring something else would be better
2024 also has Way of Mercy for a Combat Medic
Hello, I am very new to the game and someone said I could join their epic legacy campaign, but I do not know what this character sheet means, can someone help decipher it?
Oh thatās so funny, I was about to say the same thing. Iām newer in the whole DnD realm (or tabletop realm in general) too. Iām really just brought in bc of a solid few hundred hours in Balderās Gate 3, and itās been my only āguidelineā.
LOL
eh?
@fading thistle@fading wharf you've got character sheets you don't understand?
yes
is there anything in particular confusing you? have you ever looked at a character sheet before? a 5e character sheet?
I have, but this one is for like the "epic legacy" thing, and my class and level says: VP 6, HL 1, S13, and Ar5
i have no clue what that means
talk with the dm who gave you the sheet. . .
Yeahh that doesn't really sound like anything D&D
looks like a 25th level character. . . .? maybe?
At least 5e
Somewhat. Iāll be honest I think I have more a clue than Uni (assuming itās a character sheet heās working on), I have watched several videos and have an essentials kit from Amazon that got here just the other week, I have the (what I assume) is what the average Character sheet looks like. I know of the ability scores of Strength, Constitution, etc., but thereās still so much blank, from initiative, experience point, attacks, equipment.
My question is what remains static and what doesnāt? Presumably, background and race wonāt change throughout a character/campaign (a given I think).
Iām assuming now itās very Pencil-Erasure, lots are meant to be changed over the course of a game
yeah, i strongly suggest pencil
and essentials kit? so you're using the 2014 version of the rules
I guess now. I just needed something with a standard set of rules. Iām aware of homebrew things, of 2024 rules, and that things are no doubt different for each GM/player. I just needed solid groundwork. The essentialās kit gave me a preset adventure, rulebook, character sheets, dice, a start ig.
yes yes, no shade, just trying to get an understanding of what you're looking at.
have you made an account on dndbeyond? tried messing around with just making generic characters? taking a look at the pregens?
I have actually! Iāve actually made a pretty solid character (er-, what I think is solid anyway), using it. Is that what most players tend to use for various characters?
in general, absolutely.
that being said. hp is obviously going to change a lot, and frequently. your ability scores are probably going to change as you level up, which in turn will increase your skills
armor class is going to change somewhat frequently. initiative is going to maybe change depending on your abilities and feats
Nice, thanks a ton, Iāve been watching campaigns on YT (Dimension 20, Critical Role, another one Iām not remembering), I think Iām getting gameplay and vibes down. Itās just the more āmathyā and textbook things that I may be tossed in a loop.
i would recommend acquisitions inc.
it's hands down my favorite d&d show
different games, different tables, are going to have more or less focus on strict adherence to the math. most try to be roughly near the rules, but it can vary greatly
Something something variety and spice
But srsly, thanks, I think I just need to convince myself that it isnāt as intimidating as it seems
it's a lot easier if you have a dm working with you
Iād imagine, but Iām pretty far from having a DM. I have a friend (whoās really my partnerās friend, but sheās cool) who DMās but is often busy (from being a mom, school, or a campaign)
maybe find a one shot to play in? a one shot that's interested in taking new players?
You know what, hell yeah
the best way to learn how to do a thing is to do it
Whatās the best way to learn dnd? Iāve always wanted to play and do a campaign Iāve watched many campaigns but I live in a very small remote farm town with a small population with being online how would one find a group per say taking new comers or anything like that?
How do people start DND campaigns? I would love to be a DM but I don't really know where to start. Like how do people find DND groups to play with?

Your local gamestore might have a D&D night if you're looking for irl, otherwise there's probably plenty of people looking for a DM, Theres a channel here for that
Online is a great place to find a campaign, there is https://discord.com/channels/516367331358801950/1070720656917938227 where you can find people in this server to play with. There are links that you can find here that will teach you the rules and if you have any other questions please ask!
How to convince friends to play dnd
You don't?
You ask them if they're interested, if they say no, nothing ventured nothing gained
My advice is it's easier to make friends from a D&D group than a D&D group from friends
Check out #find-a-game and see if you can find a group there
i made a rogue with +7 deception is deception useful
Can be depends on the situation
Convincing a guard you belong somewhere you are not supposed to be
Convincing a shop keeper the chicken bone necklace is actually a powerful magic item
there is? is it like a vc with randoms
is it useful in combat or just niche situations
can i convince a goblin that the other goblins are his enemy
or is there another skill for that
like persuasion
With persuasion, there are three rough categories:
- Willing: the creature does what you ask, there is no check
- Hesitant: if you roll well enough, the creature does as you ask
- Unwilling: the creature does not do as you ask, there is no check
Unless the goblin was already hesitant about its alliance with the other goblins, you're probably not going to convince it
Maybe not in combat you have sharp things for those situations
But you can certainly try
fairs ty bro
No, since the gamestore will have regulations, and the chance of the group being toxic is less bad due to you playing IRL, which doesn't allow toxic behavior to affect the game like you can through VC which is a medium for communication with a weaker filter to behave yourself and filter what you say
oh hi gooie
so #find-a-game only lets you find players or a DM for irl campaigns not online
ok ty
i confuse about Shape-Shifting rule
can any body help i Shape-Shifting into Tyrannosaurus Rex ok what my hp can i use all of my magic what about my class ac and stats and also passive if i not a moon druid polymorth ino Tyrannosaurus Rex
Are you referring to Wildshaping from the Druid class or Polymorph the spell?
eh both
(You cannot Wild Shape into a tyrannosaurus at all. Its CR is too high.)
that not matter only what happend when i turn in to one no level limit or beast limit
i onlt say Tyrannosaurus Rex have mind what Polymorph say
Changing into a T-Rex. You cannot Wildshape into a T-Rex because it is CR 8. The maximum level you can shift into is CR 1 (normal druid) or CR 6 (moon druid). To Polymorph into one, you must be level 8 or higher regardless of class, though if you want to cast it on yourself you need to be a Bard, Druid, Sorcerer, Wizard, or one of a handful of subclasses that get it.
Wildshape. As per the feature text, your HP/Hit dice, INT/WIS/CHA scores, class features, languages, and feats stay the same. You also gain temp HP equal to your Druid level and cannot cast spells. See here for the detailed feature text.
Polymorph. As per the spell text, you only retain your alignment, personality, creature type, & HP/hit die. You also gain temp HP = the creature's HP. You also cannot cast spells and may be limited in what you can do based on the creature's anatomy. See here for the detailed spell text.
what about INT/WIS/CHA scores in polymorph
As per the spell description I linked, it mentions nothing of INT/WIS/CHA scores carrying over. Therefore, they are replaced by the creature's statistics
got also for example i have a buff use polymorph on myself did i keep the buff
Depends on the effect. Usually yes.
ok thanks you
i gana be a elderich knight it might come late but it would be fun cast action surge then turn in into rex have fun with all of it
hello, anyone is up to help me discover the game? i'm totally new.

thanks a lot
hello
thanks for help
Soo how do I start
theres a link that was just sent, u can check that out
Ik how to play I meant like how do we play here
ohh, theres a channel for finding a group
Check out #find-a-game
lmao me neither. trying to get it slowly
i'm having a heart attack
just by looking at all of it
Well, the quick start links are definitely better than jumping right into group organization. š
one thing at a time
There are a bunch of people on this server that are way too online and know way too much about dnd.
Happy to help
yeah but since ther's poeple that are new here i wanna make a group with them
it'll be fun i think
That's definitely possible. The channel I linked tells you how.
yupp, but i wanna start trying to learn all the classes and stuff, just so i could try and get it.
how long have you been playing DnD?
same
Around 10 years probably

damn okay
that's huge
big numbers used
Considering there are people that have played since the first edition days 50 years ago, I'm still a new kid on the block.
There is so much to DnD. It's a great new world to discover.
youre pretty much an OG though, 10 years is a long way to go
definitely. sounds so interesting
yeah i've seen that on the internet
but i have a question
when you're playing you make a discord call ? and you set a time in the week to play?
and how long is a game?
Very much depends on the group. One of my groups only meets in real space, one of my group switches back and forth and one is entirely online.
We use discord for voice and a virtual tabletop software (often shortened VTT) for moving minis and rolling dice. The easiest VTT to get into is probably Owlbear Rodeo.
Where do we call on here if we have a campaign
Game length is usually 3 hours for me. Once per week.

damnnn okay. is it eligible for some players to go AFK for quite a bit (like maybe 3 minutes or more) if there are some personal issues?
So that means you'll be jumping into a private call or be invited to a separate server.
Ohhh
Sure. Just let people know.
Life always happens. Some groups will be more or less tolerant of such interruptions if regular.
How do you know so much
Depends on the table, but it's reasonable to assume that'll be fine once or twice.
ohh i see. thanks for the answer
Um so I might need help on making a brand new character
Sure thing! Have you read through the basic rules yet?
You can always ask here if something is unclear.

If you need an empty digital sheet, here is one:
https://media.dndbeyond.com/compendium-images/free-rules/ph/character-sheet.pdf
Not exactly
Also thx so much
Ok I'm gonna choose cleric for class
And I'm not to sure for the race
I'd pick whichever speaks to you. Races have some smaller benefits, but class is the big choice.
Oh class seems easier tbh
Hello, I will be doing my first game ( a one-shot camping) and I need some help making my first character following the 2024 rulebook š
I have the idea for it but idk how I am supposed to do the stats or stuff
have you read the chapters on character creation?
as for stats specifically, there are 3 official methods, and its typical for the DM to chose one
I want a swashbuckler that could transition to a warlock later on by making a deal with a patreon.(smt similar to jack sparrow and later on in the game he could make a pact with Davy Jones)
Wat š
hello
Hi
how are you
Pretty good,you?
good
Start off with a rogue. Use the standard array method for your ability scores, put Dexterity as the highest and Strength the lowest. Something decent in Charisma might help if you do go for the swashbuckler subclass later.
Add a species and background, grab some equipment, you're most of the way there.
And if it hasn't been said yet, I wouldn't recommend putting much plans on multiclassing in the future. It's a complicated system that makes it really easy to accidentally make an underpowered character of you don't know what you're doing
I have a question. Im hoping to start creating a character and im wanting specific armor features nothing overpowering or enchanted just bracers with hidden comartment to hide small trinkets. Am i allowed to do this or do i need dm permission
there are no specific mechanics for this, so you need to talk to your DM, but it doesnt seem like it would be anything more than a common item realistically, so I cant see a reasonable DM having a big issue
Thank you!
I also have a question I saw the looking for faqs at the bottom is it new or is there like an unspoken rule not to use it?
#find-a-game ? It's the instructions for how to advertise your self, your game or your community. It doesn't have other posts in it because it's just the instructions.

Is anybody able to help me with getting started and learning some of the basics? (Character creation, joining a party, levels) I'd learn by myself, but it is hard for me to learn just by reading since I wouldn't understand a whole lot.
#learn-to-play and check the pinned messages for useful links/resources. Unfortunately many of us don't have time/bandwidth to teach folks one on one all of D&D. Best to read up from the free rules and ask specific questions - we can help answer specific questions.
Alright, thank you! I'll be reading on this and then ask the ones I am confused about.
hey, just here right now to ask a question, do most dm's care if you play a character thats from like, a game or some kind of media?
Playing characters inspired by media is generally okay (but always good to check - not all characters may fit the kind of D&D game you're playing in or the themes involved).
would v1 from ultrakill (he's basically a blue vampire war robot with guns) be something i'd be likely to do?
I'd first look at official D&D classes and species and think about what class and species could mechanically get close to that flavor.
But even then, check with your DM.
i don't even have a dm yet, i'm too frightened by the thought of talking to someone i'm not either friends with or am connected to via mutual friend
Well D&D is a socially collaborative storytelling RPG game so at some level you're going to need to communciate with folks to play the game. š
Anyway to help get you started here's the free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
Also #learn-to-play
it seems i'm in a bit of a bind then because unless i'm talking to a friend or a friend of a friend i'm a nervous wreck
There's play by post (text-based) D&D games
You're sending messages with strangers right now
So... pretty sure you can play D&D š

Question, am I allowed to use a character I have previously made for a campaign to another campaign?
Example, I made a vampire character that is no longer apart of the original campaign they were supposed to be in, but I still want to use them. Am I able to still use them in another campaign?
To make a campaign to run for other people, it can be simple as getting a starter adventure and getting people on board. You might find use out of #dm-discussion for more dm-focused advice
You'd likely be able to reuse the character, as long as it fits the new DMs campaign, but it's unlikely you'd get to keep any items or anything you gained in the previous campaign
Ah, alright. Thank you!
Itās not the norm, and it is heavily DM-dependent. At the very least you will be reset to the level & narrative power level of the other players
One last question, what are levels?
I've seen from the recruitment level requirements, but I am unfortunately unaware of them.
A measure of a characterās progression, like a characterās level in an RPG video game
Is it set automatically or are we able to set it to whatever we want?
No, most games have characters start at level 1
Ah, alright. Thank you!
See here for more info on leveling:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/creating-a-character#LevelAdvancement
Apologies for too many questions but I have one last one, if I wanted to question more about something I am unknown about (Something I've seen in a character template about "Spells" or "Abilities") Should I be asking here or #character-discussion ?
Sorry if this is also off-topic as well.
You can ask it here and if itās off topic for this channel we can just redirect it
And no worries in asking questions, thatās pretty much the main purpose of this channel
Alright, thank you!
So, I've been trying to fill out a thing about my character a while back, and I'm very confused on a lot of the things the template has.
I do not think it's the same as the ones usually linked here, but what confuses me is mainly the Abilities and Spells part.
And let me list out the other ones I'm confused about, if it is alright.
Actually, it might be too much. I think it's best to just focus on the two I'm confused about right now.
But, I'd like to learn about abilities and spells and how I could put them onto my character.
Have you gone through the character creation rules yet? The abilities you get (including spellcasting) will depend on what class you choose
I think I have, but I must've forgotten.
It's also I just so happened to have a dual-class, if that exists as well.
if you mean multi-class, that is not recommended for beginners due to the added complexity. Not saying you cant do it, just know that it is difficult to make work
By dual-classing do you mean multiclassing?
I'll keep that to mind, thank you.
Only because that would make you character level 2 minimum
Yes, I do mean that.
Hm, so would it be more better for me to stick with one class only for now until I am more experienced?
Generally for multiclassing you kinda need to know what you want out of it, which adds to the complexity, so recommendation is to start with just focus on one class, and not just multiclass for the sake of multiclassing
Having two classes sounds fun and interesting, but there's more going on than that š
Thatās the recommendation, but multiclassing isnāt impossible for newbies, itās just a lot of extra things you have to consider & keep track of
I'll keep those both in mind.
I would gloss over the multiclassing rules whenever you have the time but in short you have to keep in mind your stats, spellslot progression (if any), features lost, features gained, synergies, etc
And thatās on top of a wider view of when to multiclass and if it will make or maintain an effective character
If it is alright for me to ask again, may I get some knowledge on Spellslots, Spells, Abilities and features again?
I may or may have not misremembered it entirely, my apologies.
All your features will depend on the class, species, and background you choose
Nope! Background is one of the character choices you make at level 1. It describes the mechanical benefits you gain from the most influential part of your characterās backstory, which is the narrative component
Ah, I see.
Alternatively you choose the background that fits your backstory the best in case thereās not a 1-1 match
I have a few questions before I try and work on a template now, you've been really helpful and kind, thank you!
Let's see.. About the spells and abilities again.
May I get some help on them along with the difference between them?
Sure, shoot your questions
If I am planning on making a rouge, will I be using both Abilities and Spells?
Or, if I have a vampire character, will they take on the Spells and Abilities part too?
All characters get abilities, what those abilities are will depend on the 3 things I mentioned above
Or well, features, to use the game term
Ah, so Abilities are with background and features?
Abilities = Features, itās just the game term for them
For example weād refer to Fighterās Second Wind as a Fighter Class Feature.
On spells, gaining spells is normally dependent on getting the āSpellcastingā feature, which only a few classes get. Rogue doesnāt get Spellcasting normally outside of one subclass, Arcane Trickster.
Other ways to get spells include via getting certain magic items (DM dependent), choosing certain species, backgrounds, or feats. All of these other ways are much more limited in the kind of spells you can cast and how often, however.
Ahh, I see.
So features and spells were more different than I imagined!
Alright, one last question. Do people host text only campaigns?
I hope this doesn't sound anything foreign since I know mostly a lot takes place on call, but I mainly do prefer text so I was wondering if it's common or brought up a lot.
Yes, those would be called āplay-by-postā (PBP) games.
Np! Feel free to ask any additional questions you may have if you come up with any more!
Alright, I'll see if I have anymore questions during when I'm making the thing!
Question, does anybody have any information on vampires and how to create the points for Charisma and Wisdom?
I used to have a link to these things but I lost them.
Vampires are not a player character species (e.g. not normally playable by players)
The way to generate your ability scores depends on your DM/table but here's the standard ways to generate those.
?tag new abilities
Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
Ah, I thought they were because I was said they could.
I mean a DM can allow homebrew species but that's a bit beyond this channel's purpose.
I remember there being a specific DND website in helping me look at races, that's why.
But, I suppose I am going offtopic.
But, pushing that aside I'll try to generate the abilities, thank you!
There is a "Dhampir" -race in Van Richten's Guide to ravenloft, which is basically a vampire, and/or can be flavored as one š
I'm a bit new to things but which subclass is better?
Bladesinger or Eldritch Knight? They both seem similar in playstyles (that i've tested so far) but I don't know which is more optimal for a longer styled campaign
"best" is very context sensitive but folks in #optimization have opinions about best if you provide the context.
I'd suggest playing something that's interesting and fun for you and fits the game you're playing in.
Should I be using that one then?
Just mentioning it as an option
I'll consider it if Vampires wouldn't be welcomed then!
New to dnd and looking to join a campaign
Welcome! #find-a-game can point you toward the available groups here, or you can check #learn-to-play message for some other options.
Dm here: my player wont roleplay in my game. even when its encouraged. his excuse is always(im a bugbear and I was hit in the face. So I cant speak) he also does not "like it" when I explain a situation or recap of combat. ex: he raged and ended his turn then got knocked out by an owlbear. I explained how he screamed and got punched in his face. he got mad at that and said he did not like it when people describe thier character. what do I do with this player. he is one of my 3 players. his cousin is also in the campaign. So what do I do?
@cunning karma He gets mad when other people describe their own character? This guy is a puzzler. You make it sound like he doesn't like D&D, lol.
Have you tried asking him about it? Asking him directly if there's something different you or the table could do?
You definitely should! We changed one of my players from wood elf to dhampir after surviving an almost fatal encounter with a Nosferatu (also from Van Richten's Guide) and they love it.
Anyone open to teaching a newb how to play and run a campaign and a world?
You as the DM describing what player characters do and what they feel is definitely faux-pas in my eyes.
You can describe what npcs do to them, never describe how a pc reacts. That is the players job.
But if you just recapped what happened before and they got mad at it, I'm also confused.
I encourage you to have a talk with that player away from the table (preferably after or before the session) and ask them to try and explain why they got mad. Maybe there is a misunderstanding.
There is much to learn in running a campaign, but my first advice would definitely be: "Start small".
Run one dungeon. Then run the town next to the dungeon. And so forth.
To get some very solid general DM advice, I always recommend Matt Colvilles "Running the Game" series on youtube:

Hello
I was bored so I joined the server
Technically I have played dnd before but like the most ultra scuffed version of it but I've come to learn how to play for realzies
You're certainly at the right place then. For the rules, I recommend you start here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
That pretty much contains all of the rules you need to get started.
hello everyone, i'm fairly new to D&D and i would like to learn more about the different classes (druid, bard and all the rest) and I've heard of platforms like Owlbear and D&D beyound and would also want to know more about those.
Easiest to answer question first. You can see an overview of the classes in dnd here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/character-classes
And then if you scroll down you see the actual rules.
As for D&D Beyond, that's the official website for DnD. It's a digital storefront as well, so you can purchase pretty much all official content and a good selection of 3rd-party content as well. It also contains a character builder that streamlines the character creation process. It also has a bunch of additional features.
Owlbear Rodeo is a VTT, a virtual tabletop software. It is used as a digital table of sorts, so people can play, roll dice together and move minis around digitally.
There are a bunch of different VTTs around, the most popular of which are roll20, Owlbear and Foundry.
Oh ok thank you! One last thing tho, befor reading all of the classes i would first want to know more about my favorite one but i don't quit know which it is, where would a trapper like playstyle fit in the classes? Would it be ranger?
I think I have a understanding of how things work now, how would I go about starting?
Sort of? No class is really specialized in trapping, but all classes can use traps and there are some spells that work as traps.
Depends a bit on what you really think when you say trapper.
first would be finding a game. going in the server's #find-a-game will give you instructions to finding one
awesome
What comes next is kinda up to the dm, some parties have a session 0 before character creation, some have character creation then session 0, some have premade characters and so on.
i have been in love (methaphoricly) with my one and only oc (well i think it's an oc) it was like a mole sloth girl thats sensitive to light smells etc so she usualy tries not to show herself too much and would fight by putting traps in the floor cause she can dig n stuff, didnt think too much about this oc but can you like visualise what i'm saying? I could maybe remodele her into a druid to manipulate the earth sort of?i don't realy know.
Yeah that sounds somewhat doable. Mold Earth is a druid cantrip (level 0 spell) after all. And there are other earth spells as well.
Though making traps be effective in combat is going to be hard. Move earth can't really make a hole that is deep enough to deal damage, for example.
So you'll likely need to compromise a bit.
Ah ok thank you i'll think about all of that!
As deva said, it is very difficult to make it useful mid combat, but there are spells like Glyph of warding which can be effective traps, storing spells that can be triggered by a ton of things.
it should be noted that the spell is fairly expensive so the upkeep would be a problem long term unless the dm and player works something out
homebrew is a good resource here.
Ahh I see, just looking for a campaign that's good for my timezone now ā¤ļø
Maybe being able to store level 1 spells in a drastically weakened glyph
for a lot less
I want my oc to have awsome chemistry with others to make it work like a blind into trap combo for exemple but i guess that's up to the other players and if that is even possible to do in D&D with dices, let me get used to D&D first maybe i'm over thinking stuff
Mhm. I'd definitely start by looking at the official spells first. Homebrew (especially if your group is new) is not likely to lead to a particularly balanced game.
it should be noted however! there IS a bear trap in base dnd, it is not good, but its there!
Another way u could do this is caltrops and the blindness spell
or alternatively fog / darkness.
i dont think there's a single one that doesnt require vc posted recently lmao ig I'll wait to find a game tmrw or smth lol
People usually prefer VC for digital games, however there are play by posts which exclusively uses text. Also you could try your luck with making a looking for DM post, where you ask specifically for either a mix or text only.
forgot to reply
Oh woops
no i meant myself
Oh
i forgot to reply with my answer xd
Ahh
I see, tysm I'll try that out
If you'd rather play pbp (play by post), you could check out the D&D Beyond forums: https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/dungeons-dragons-discussion/play-by-post
There are also some dedicated pbp discord servers around, but I'm not up do date there.
Hey, I am going to have my first game of DnD, I was chosen to be the DM and it is going to be in-person. What do I need?
Assuming you're starting from nothing, I'd recommend
- A copy of the D&D Free Rules. Seeing as you're playing in person, you can download them for free on the D&D Beyond app (works offline)
- If you won't have access to a device at the table, you'll want the 2024 core rulebooks, at the very least the Player's Handbook and Monster Manual, but all three is useful
- Some dice, again there are free dice rolling apps including Avrae if you have discord on your phone/tablet, or on the D&D Beyond app
- Pen, paper, notepad etc
- Character sheets for your players to fill out if they're not making their characters on D&D Beyond and printing them out
- Something to play:
- Either a campaign book such as Phandelver and Below or Wilds Beyond the Witchlight if you want an official one for example, or
- A one-shot such as those found in Keys from the Golden Vault or Candlekeep Mysteries (official collections) or Wolves of Welton or Wild Sheep Chase (free one-shots), or
- Your notes on whatever adventure you've written yourself. This doesn't have to be a lot; literally just the description of a small village, some people who live there, and a nearby location with a threat is enough to get started
Is it normal for my DND group to just turn a short paragraph describing a room into a 45 minute conversation? And are single rounds of combat supposed to take 30 minutes? Pretty sure neither of these are supposed to happen but it happened to me.
Nah this definitely can happen, though it's not necessarily a bad thing š
There are very few "normals" and "supposeds" in D&D, as it's very much an experience that emerges from what you and your players decide to do
There are certainly assumptions, but those go out the window very quickly
A more important question than "is it normal..." or "is this supposed....." would be "is this fun?"
If you and your players are having fun with combat where rounds take 30 minutes, all is right in the world
sounds like a group with great d&d chemistry if they can rp for 45 minutes without further prompts
Yeah, totally
you can have situations where the highlight of a session is an NPC consisting of only a first name and a single sentence description
30 minutes for a round is quite a lot though, usually i try to keep it to around 1 minute of thinking per turn + another minute to figure everything out on the tabletop. so with a standard party and a few enemies its usually 10-15 mins per round
Yeah, generally lengthy discussions tend to not be much of a problem, and often a good sign the players are invested and considering their options (classic joke of the party's greatest obstacle being an unlocked door lol) š
Combat can get lengthy, and there are some ways to mitigate it, and one thing I'd probably recommend is the DM asking the party to think about their own turn ahead of time on the other characters' turns
Ok same question I asked in gen chat, If im new to the game where do I start

The post above can give you some direction. You might also try the D&D Beyond forums, LFG on Reddit, or a service like Roll20 (which has a search option for "beginners welcome" games).
Good practice is to have a look at the Free Rules, maybe try making a level one character and explore what their features and abilities can do through that process.
Moved to #dnd-advertisements (thanks Davyd)
Hello how is everyone!?
i am reading through the free rules and my eyes has started to gloss over when i reach the difficulty class and armour class š
Difficulty class is just a number that represents how difficult a task is, specifically the number to roll higher than. Armor class is your difficulty class of being hurt by attacks
Don't worry too much about that for now. Skip to the section on Classes, see what catches your interest.
cooooool
Don't read the rules cover to cover. Instead look at the contents page and pick a part that appeals to you, such as character creation. Read through that section and where it refers to a game term you don't understand, look that up
D&D books are reference books, not cover-to-cover reads
i seeee
that's why i was going through it and thought "if everyone is saying it is a relatively simple game to get into, why are the rules so exhaustive?" lmao
thanks for clarifying it!
The 'relatively' is doing a lot of heavy lifting in that sentence.
The rules can be quite complex on the whole, even if the underlying idea (roll a d20, add bonuses, compare to target number) is simple.
One step at a time, and great point by Davyd.
Yeah, I wouldn't say D&D is "simple", but it is accessible
What that means is you will be able to find tonnes of resources and help in getting started
Mhm. And many new groups will fly by the seat of their pants just fine. If unclear, make something up, look the rule up later. Fun is paramount.
We didnāt even finish the first round before I had to leave. Weād gone through 3 people just casting magic missile :/
We were in combat š
Hey im trying to make Kratos into a level 1 barbarian, can i have some help?
Please don't ping me
We didnāt even get halfway through the round š
Also that doesn't actually address what I said about people having fun
Sorry
you can still have fun even if you don't finish a round
Sounds like a Human, Aasimar, or Goliath with a Greataxe! What else specific are you looking for?
I just need to figure out stats and stuff
im leaving the numerical stuff for tommorw but just everything else i need lol
This is my second character lol

Hello
Hello there.
wow this is cool building an Iconic Rogue
Rogue
Launch deadly Sneak Attacks while avoiding harm through stealth
Rogues rely on cunning, stealth, and their foesā vulnerabilities to get the upper hand in any situation. They have a knack for finding the solution to just about any problem. A few even learn magical tricks to supplement their other abilities. Many Rogues focus on stealth and deception, while others refine skills that help them in a dungeon environment, such as climbing, finding and disarming traps, and opening locks.

Iām struggling to believe a Barbarian is more complex than a Rogue but ok.
I don't agree with it either
Rogue was my first class too. Always had a soft spot for it.
But everything else is correct!
Ehhh, I think Iād swap strength and charisma.
Find Familiar is very handy for Rogue.
No class cares less for tracking resources than Rogue
Even Barb and Fighter have Rage and Action Surge to take care of
rogue has less to keep track of but the core playstyle of finding ways to trigger advantage can be hard for some new players to wrap their heads around
Also theyāre more focused on out of combat stuff. Barbarian smashes things and smashes them hard.
How can I find a game as a newcomer?
Find a local game store and ask when they run D&D. Alternatively, find some friends.
Alternatively, #looking-for-community
I mean online
My problem is everyone in the looking for players place seems so much better and more experienced
Iām sure someoneās going to be looking to run for their first time or do a newbie game.
And most people donāt mind a newbie in their game.
Ok Iāll try. Thanks for the info
So I am looking to discuss the use of familiars.
I know that for the Find Familiars spell (as a Warlock) it requires 10gp worth of items to cast.
#1 - Is there a way to work around this?
#2 - If I have a familiar and I want to use it without use of the Find Familiar spell, how does it play out? What abilities does it have? I am assuming that it would be possible that it could be killed? Any ways around that?
Hello I'm new to dnd looking for a group of players to play my first game and possibly teach me how to play any help?
Hello! Sure thing, let's talk familiars.
- Nope! You need to spend 10g the first time you summon it and after every time it dies.
- I don't know what you mean by this exactly. A familiar is only created by the spell. You don't bond with a preexisting creature.

So the concept behind my character is that this real world dog essentially saved his life when he was dying in the gutter and thus their bond was built. Problem is the guy does live on the streets, so wouldn't have the access to do the spells. Just trying to find a way to mechanically make it work as a flavor component of my character
Let's continue this conversation over in #character-discussion

Could anybody tell me about DNDBeyond sheets, FoundryVTT, Theatre of the mind Discord for voice, Owlbear and Roll20 is and how they're used in DND sessions? I'm still new to figuring out things, and I do only have a mobile device so I was wondering if I could learn how people use them in sessions.
Haha I like your pile of keywords that you're looking to define. Certainly don't see that very often. I'll help out.
Thank you!
Foundry, Roll20, and Owlbear Rodeo are all Virtual Table Top programs (VTTs). They're basically programs which let everyone in your group look at the same screen at the same time. This screen tends to show a battle map if you're in combat, for example, so everyone can visualize where their characters are in the scene.
Ah, also ignore Discord for voice! Sorry, I just copied and pasted the things I was confused looking at the "Looking for players."
I know what Discord VC is I swear!
DnD Beyond is a website which hosts character sheets and rule book info. It acts like a big portfolio that you can keep all your info in, and share that info with your party.
Ah, I see.
And Theatre of mind means you're not using a battle map or anything physical to depict where and how the players are fighting during combat. Instead combat will happen solely in your mind (thus the name) with the DM describing what happens.
So imagination, I see!
"Theatre of the Mind" is a very fancy term for "use your imagination." Basically it means the DM will describe something out loud, and the players picture it in their mind. It just means playing without maps or other visual aids
How do VTT's work if it's alright with me asking, and are they available to mobile to use?
its a website you all connect to. there you have a map, tokes, dice,, combat tracker, digital sheets and potentially more features
some work on mobile, but not all
It depends on the program. Basically everyone shares the same scene, so if the scene shows a tavern brawl and I move my character from one side of the room to the other, everyone can see that character move.
Which ones are the one who work on mobile, if you happen to know by any chance?
Though to be honest, from my experience, most VTTs aren't very compatible with mobile. They work... but not very well.
How unfortunate, that means finding parties would be limited for me.
I think you need at least a tablet size screen for comfortable VTT use
I don't have a tablet either, that's how poor I am lol
oof then it might be difficult. I think roll20 might work okayish on a phone?
Am I able to try out the Roll20 VTT?
It shouldn't be too hard to find a group that would play using theatre of the mind only. That would mean they don't use a VTT at all
sure its free to use.
Yeah, hopefully it wouldn't be hard!
Nevermind, it's too confusing for me. I guess I'm just going with the theatre of mind lol.
Thank you guys for helping!
Hey pretty new to dnd and I wanted to ask what artificer does.
The short answer is they make magic things
Artificers are spellcasters that specialize in creating and utalizing magic items, or imbuing magic into objects
Artificers put magic into items and gadgets. this is represented by their infusions, but also by their spells
Oh thanks for the info just what I needed for my caracter
Another question at what lv does your caracter usually end up at the end of a campaign
Anywhere! It depends on the campaign
That depends entirely on you group, and what adventure you're playing. Prewritten adventures have a large variety of different ending levels, and if you're playing in a game where the DM is making up their own story, then you can basically keep playing until your group decides to be done
Yeah, it depends a bit on the campaign, but hinges even more on how long your gaming group lasts.
20 is the maximum character level the game officially supports, but hitting that cap is more than a little rare. Most official WotC published adventures/campaigns end at around level 15ish, give or take.
Is there a discord for people looking to find groups to play online? Nvm Iām blind

Hi i got a question
I chose magic initiate on my rogue. I was messing around and didnt realized once you choose your spells its kinda hard lock. Its not so bad. My rogue has mage hand and disguise self. The thing is I chose true strike
I thought itll be added on to my daggers damage, this is not the case
I also just realize that since i have to cast true strike to then get that radiant damage
I cant sneak attack, is there any use for true strike in my build
Hello everyone š
Is there a beginner D&D game I can join that gose over basic stuff?
Hello š

Have you messaged them and ask why they not answered?

I downloaded D&D Beyond to make a character whitch I'm not sure if it allowed to be used š¤
I havenāt even messed with any downloads, Iām just learning the basics.
Iām pretty sure it all depends on the DM though, your DM has their own set of rules. Whether or not your character can be used is up to the DM.
Hmm that is true. I'm hoping I can find a friendly beginnings DM who can show me the ropes and ease me into it š
I looked online and there D&D shop near me so I might pop in there and see when they have a game night so I can join š
either you can find a dm and play in their game, or you can check out videos online, they are very helpful to learn how to play dnd
or just look at the rules books, but those are often times hard to understand for beginners
I did look at the rule book and I was like how I'm I suppose to understand this lol
yea.. but if you want to learn how to play, videos online are extremely helpful
One step at a time, lol.
Creating your first character helps to understand a lot of the meat of the game.
I havenāt even looked at the rule book yet
I been watch Ginny D on YouTube and she dose a really good job of explaining things
So I should do this first?
everyone has access to online character creation tools which makes it harder to learn for new players imo
good old pen and paper is how i like to do things :D
I made 1 character on D&D Beyond š
I much prefer it this way as well
I can't wright or spell due to my dyslexia lol š
yea maybe dnd beyond is better then
Do you think it be allowed for me to use or will I need pen and paper?
most online dms i believe are fine with dnd beyond
im not entirely sure about in person though
that would have to be something you gotta find out
I can always ask and if they say no then no harm done and I just find someone who can help me š
if your looking to play in person, your lgs should have someone willing to help
I'm having a look to see who can help but there alot of people on there šµāš«
All it takes is a bit of a shove and soon itāll be no problem for you to join.
So donāt be afraid of the number of people and think of the new friends youāll make.
šµāš« still alot of people
Youāll get used to it soon enough.
almost everyone in this community are nice, you shouldnt have any worries!
It don't help I have anxiety and I get nervous and when I try to talk I end up stuttering š
Itās just something you have to get over by doing it. If you donāt strike up conversations, you wonāt get better at them, even basic things take practice, and sure you might feel embarrassed at first. But itās a requirement if you want to do most things and gain confidence in yourself.
Sorry you had to wait a bit for the message, I saw that Bread was typing and didnāt want to interrupt them.
Thank you for the advice I appreciate it š
Beware, you wonāt see skyrim styled level ups for Speech though.
If you could see progress as easily as that and the xp needed until a level up. Youād be drowning in confidence
But still, it might not be easy for a while, so just keep on it, try and throw yourself out of your comfort zone.
Youāll be rolling high numbers in no time.
Yeah, which is why I always advocate for doing it the old fashioned way at least once. Sorry, I should have specified
I agree p&p is the way to go, if you can
Would I have to draw my character as well?
Only if you want to
Hey whatās everyone up to
I have some ideas for a character but they might not be first time dnd friendly
pen and paper creates more of a connection aswell, you feel more connected when you have to write out all your characters manually, instead of given choices like on dnd beyond
Not beginner friendly in what way?
I'm really good at drawing stick figures š
To me anyways I think.
I was thinking a Changeling who is a Barbarian Combat Junkie.
I just donāt think that would be very easy on me
I'm heading off it currently 12:54am good night everyone š
Barbarians are relatively simple, as characters go. You mostly just choose when to rage and then smack things.
I heard the rage spell can be used twice a day and is that in-game time or each irl day?
If someone does an animal handeling check, is it just up to the DM what the check to pass would be or is there a stat on the animal that they have to pass
In-game time. You get all your rages back when you take what's called a long rest (in other words, your character needs a good night's sleep)
Also, you start out with two, but you gain more rages per day as you level up.
its mostly up to the dms discretion
so say theres a pack of ice wolves staring down the party in the middle of a blizzard, what would you say could be the check in this scenario? like 17? for level 4s
are you the dm?
yeah
what do you think is appropriate
yeah I get it like its up to me to decide if I really want them to fight the wolves or not. I guess i just dont want to make it unfair?
do you want the wolves to fight?
Also, how hungry are those wolves? Lol.
do you think the wolves would be willing to not maul your party to death?
Something to keep in mind is that even wolves have a sense of self preservation. If they watch some of their pack die violently, the rest might cut their losses and run. That way you can overpopulate the fight and play the difficulty by ear.
mmm probably not cause theyre animals hunting. But then its like, what if they end up destroying the players and its one sided. I dont want the party to die to some over powered wolves that I thought they could handle
Ooh sounds pretty fun
So Barbarian is very new friendly. What about being a Changeling or that I want them to be a Combat Junkie, would that be hard to do?
if the party starts to struggle in a fight and you dont want them to struggle
fudge your rolls
Hey I have a question for someone
whats up
So I just started making a new campaign and Iām asking people to join but no one wants to join what do I do
Look through #looking-for-dm and invite folks who are looking for a game to join yours perhaps?
online or in person?
Online because I donāt think anyone is in Arizona
Pretty sure there's folks who play D&D in AZ
I'm not sure what a combat junkie is.
Changeling is just a race/species. Their primary gag is that they can change their appearance at-will. Other than that they're not really any more complicated than any other race option
look at #looking-for-dm
I have done that in all dnd servers and no one has answered
i dont know what to tell ya then
People posting in #looking-for-dm are players looking for a game. Direct message them and tell them you have a game if they are interested.
Or even use the thread attached to their post to provide details about your game.
Ok
Yea I just started up my first campaign as a dm in over 5 years
In my words: Combat Junkie, meaning that they absolutely thrive and seek combat. They feel immense pleasure from fighting and if they donāt fight for a while their health starts to drain until they finish a fight they find. They quite literally live to fight. Theyāll feel fulfilled after their opponent cannot fight any longer. I believe they also get a boost if they fight a stronger opponent than themselves.
Combat Junkie/Battle Junkie
Thatās good to know, Changelings sounded harder to do when I was watching a video about them
Oh I see. The way you capitalized battle junkie made me think it was an actual character option, like some kind of homebrew something or other.
Yeah that sounds good. A character that loves a good scrap haha. You can make any character you like and just play them that way.
Yess thatās a great way of putting it!
I love characters who more than anything loves a good scrap
Iām glad I can release some thoughts I had for a while.
Anyone have any other recommended dnd servers i just wanna broaden my campaign search
#looking-for-community has public servers people are welcome to join. Some are Westmarches and some are general D&D discords.
#find-a-game go here if your looking to join a game, any questions you have about dnd can be answered in here if needed, have fun!
Please keep game organizing to private messages or in the Looking For Game channels - itās off topic in the regular discussion channels
See #find-a-game to learn how to use our LFG channels.
What is Westmarch? I keep on seeing it but don't understand
Hey was wondering how to join, every time I keep trying to join a group I either get left on read or just straight up told no is it me or am I missing something?
A westmarch is a type of campaign modeled similarly to an MMORPG, often with many players and DMs, featuring an evolving world and inconsistent parties rather than a linear adventure with a set party
I would also love to join a group
Ohhh, so that's what my team was
thanks mate
No problem
Wanna just help each other out by looking out for opportunities?
Sure I would love to
Have you checked out the lfg instructions not far above?
Iāve never actually played the game before but it seems like a lot of fun
Yes I have
Ooh that would be fun
Whatās a west march?
.
that should explain it
Oh ok that sounds like a lot of fun
I already have a charcuterie idea planned out
cool
Would u wanna join
?
if i could please
Should we dm u for latter?
?
To like join the campaign
My advice then is keep searching. People rarely find a group quickly, I myself had to go through multiple groups before I found one that worked. If you are a new player it can make it a bit more difficult as online communities tend to prefer experienced players.
ok
What's a cantrip?
Spell that doesnt require a spell slit. Basically a level 0 free spell
In a nutshell, it's a spellcasters equivalent of swinging a sword or shooting an arrow. It's a type of spell that can be casted as many times as you want and like the person above me said, it's a free level 0 spell
How do I add the gunslinger subclass to my fighter? I can't finde any add buttons or anything in thr subclass page
Assuming you're doing this on DDBeyond:
- You need to have the 2014 fighter core class selected
- The character needs to be level 3, so you can select the subclass
hey at what level do you get a subclass
For 2014 classes it can vary but it's typically level 3
For 2024 classes it's always level 3
if you do a dnd session online do you still need to draw your caracter or just describe him/her
You never need to have an image for your character, let alone draw them
yup, there is no need to have art or anything for them. My group use just a coloured circle as a token and then we just describe the characters while playing. Not having a clear visual representation can be fun to spark more interest in the other player characters because you have to ask a lot more questions to the other players about their character.
Late response but make sure you have Homebrew content and Critical Role content toggled on in the character creator since Gunslinger is not an official subclass
Yeah but I can't add the sub class to my home brow collection there is no button for that
