It's a place to tell tales of your D&D games
I'm still looking for a table š
Me too
It can take a while
Spread your net wide there are lot of places to look for games other than here `iamrazorwing's Game Finding Guide
Y'know, iamrazorwing really ought to post a link to it separately so's we can get one of the mods to pin it. it's that useful, and would save them getting pinged all the time.
(at least, IMO)
I don't think non-mod messages get pinned, but I sincerely appreciate the sentiment!
alternative, they make their own similar bot-command for the server and pay razorwing royalties every time it gets used
So this is a bit off-topic but one reason why iamrazorwing's list hasn't been pinned (even though it's a great resource) it is that we (meaning D&D/WoTC) don't want it to be misinterpreted as being officially approved or provided by WoTC/D&D.
And now back to D&D newcomer questions!
"i'm John Watsee and i approve of this message"
The response is both understandable and newcomer-adjacent.
Welcome! If you've any questions, feel free to ask.
Hello!
during roleplay gaming sessions, if im in a bar, how do i go on about stealing a bottle?
do i ask my DM if i can steal the bottle and roll a sleight of hand? if it is sucessful can i break that bottle, hide in inside my inventory and use it during combat to throw into enemy eyes and try to blind them?
is that too imaginative?
Step 1 is definitely ask your DM if you can steal the bottle.
They'll then tell you if it's possible/any checks that may be involved
For the latter, it'll also depend on your DM and how strictly they stick to rules as written
For example, at my table, it would probably be a sleight of hand check to steal the bottle but it would have zero combat uses
Player: "My character would like to do <action>"
DM: <thinks about what rules would apply for the context> "Okay give me a <check to see if character can do thing>"
Players: <rolls appropriate check> "I rolled a <number>"
DM: "Okay - your character <succeeds/fails>."
DM then narrates how the scene has changed by the player characters actions, etc.
ohh so i can't necessarily just steal things and use it for combat?
You can - but the DM decides if it's possible and what dice rolls (if any) are necessary to do that
You play a character but the character can't just automatically do whatever they want without buy-in from the DM and the rest of the players.
I want to throw a broken bottle at the orc
Ok so thatās an improvised weapon so your action will be
Ok roll a d20 and add str/dex
1d4 damage if you hit
At my table, it'd be what Ratatoskr said, except that if a fight broke out I might let you use a bonus action to break the bottle and then treat the remains as an improvised weapon (a la what Enoki was describing).
oh i can't roleplay that im aiming for his eyes? or will it be up to the DM?
Aiming for specific parts of the anatomy isn't covered by the rules, and anything not covered by the rules is generally "Ask your DM" territory.
okay noted on that thanks guys!
In 5e, it's rare you go for a specific body part, because that'd require homebrewing mechanics for specific body parts which will become a whole thing
is there any other websites besides this discord group, i can try to look for campaigns? i really want to play but i keep not being able to join, i think it's because im new.
However, some/most GMs will allow you to narrate what the hit/miss looks like, provided there aren't any extra mechanical implications of what get said.
Try r/lfg and #find-a-game
I have a whole guide linked in my bio.
ohh i genuinely thought it was like fear and hunger where i can aim at specific parts to weaken the monster
thank you iam!
Read the rules so that you won't make false assumptions about what is and isn't a game mechanic
Gooie has you on the right track with that stuff. Mechanically per RAW, nah, nothin', but a DM might be like, "huh, cool, i'll allow it", just can't always rely on that ^^
As a general rule, though; always have a solid grasp of basics c:
as well as be creative! from what ive seen dms love interesting solutions
i watched a video where they let a new player play and all they told him was to imagine what he wanted to do and let the dm do all the mechanical stuff, and he had the most creative ideas out of the whole group
In my experience, many DMs love interesting solutions that still have some grounding in the actual mechanics
Some groups lean more towards do anything than others, but I think it's a mistake to go in expecting that. D&D is more 'do anything you want (that the DM allows)'
it was more so āimagine your character doing thisā so they still stayed to physical limitations and common sense
they always asked the dm if they could do it after
since they didnt know what to roll anyway itās not like he just tried to do it without his permission lmao
Example:
- Paladin trying to do parkour over a dragon to lariat it into the wall and save Narnia; even with a Nat 20, this is not going to work worth a damn 'cause it isn't within the realm of acceptable suspended disbelief
in contrast:
- A rogue using a voice box to pull guards away from guarding doorways; not intended to be used this way, but very much a creative use of existing mechanics
drastic contrast, yes, I know, I haven't had my coffee yet
but the best part i feel is you can say the paladin example and the dm can just say ānoā
thatās why they were so creative, they didnt restrict themselves
they did get told no a couple times but it really helped the experience
Knowing what the rules and mechanics of the game are and getting creative to trigger them is totally valid.
Only problem can happen if you let them try it they get a nat 20 and then they all expect it to be possible cause its a nat 20
wouldnt the dm just say whether or not it would be possible
Idealy yes but they should say it befor hand cause if you just say ah i will just tell them after then they role a nat20 and for most people nat20 means it has to happen
In some case a nat 20 on a skill check of a cr30 is not a pass critical sucess and fails arnt a actually thing in d&d getting a crit on a skill wonāt mater if you donāt surpass the dc
new players wont even know what nat 20 means lmao, i sure as hell didnt
And if the dm then says you try it and just dont get hurt that could lead to disapointment
But it ranges to dm to dm
u just gotta set the expectation before the game starts, thatās all
I know but for a lot of people nat20 have a Meaning a bit outside of the normal dc check
that isnt per the rules itās just misinformation
at most itās a house rule
20ās are only critical hits
I know
Where do i report someone here who DMs me just to mock my opinion for being new? very strange to do that
But New people lern nat 20=krit=good so nat20 spezial so its pretty logical that thid happens
i feel like i want more info on this but thatās nosy lol
Note that they generally can't do much about things that happen off server
You donāt insult new players anyways
Nat20 is always good on attack rolls that is true (nat 20= landing on 20 on a d20)

itās so juicy, but i understand š
THANK YOU!!!! I played back in the early 1980's and again in the Early 1990's. I was recently reinvited via a Discord Server running Avrae. I know others that just don't know where an how to start. If you don't mind, I will share your Google Document.
Feel free, but please keep my credit info!
Hi I'm new with dnd but I really love it and I'm made a character but I was wondering if there were limits to the species š¤
Mu character is part moth and has a whole little backstory around it and I'm worries I can't use her for dnd
Your "watermark' is on every page and I have no intention of removing it. Too good of a document.
Thete are a limited amount of Spezies that are oficcial but you can always talk with your dm if you can homebrow(make youreself wich i probably wouldnt do if your new ) somthing or you just have the moth part be a need detail but your mainly for example a humman or a elf
O ty
I was wondering bc she has different ears than humans and elves
She is very much like an elf tho
Then just explain it in that way and maybe talk to your dm beforhand the main thing Spezies is for is abilitys and stuff so just chose a "normal" Spezies there and then use the other part just for aperance and stuff
Hey, I know this has probably been asked and answered a lot of times already, but I am really interested, but also quite overwhelmed with information! There is so much to learn and I was wondering where I should start?

The bot post above has some good options. To break it down further:
- You could watch some games played on YouTube or Twitch just to see what it's like in action. (Podcasts also work for this purpose.)
- Or play the demo.
- Or read #learn-to-play.
- Or you could read through the Free Rules.
- Or you could watch the Handbooker Helper videos (or WASD20's Rules School) on YouTube. Caveat: the videos are for the 2014 rules. The fundamentals are pretty much the same between 2014 and 2024 rulesets, though.
- Or you could sign up for a learn-to-play session through the virtual weekends linked in the server's Events channel.
- Or you can do any/all of these in increments. Read one rules chapter. Watch one explainer video.
Thank you so much!! :')
I wouldnt advise people to watch pro champagnes cause that can give unrealistic expectations
Notice I didn't say anything about pro campaigns.
But if you go on these Plattforms your going to get pro champsigns
I disagree vividly, because watching or listening to a campaign can help you get inspiration for how to be a good player or dm, and can help you more firmly grasp how the rules actually translate into really playing DnD.
I don't think watching DnD will set unrealistic expectations, because you and your group should have the maturity to understand that your first game probably won't be as good as watching people who've been playing for years.
Then you underestimate how perfekt people can feel about everything they do and can blame everyone else that the game isnt going like a pro campagne
Humans have that tendancyš but yea if you go into it with the ability to not do that then watching pro stuff is probably realy helpful
That's their fault and not the fault of DnD content creators. That also doesn't answer my previous argument at all.
I think that is overgeneralizing to say watching campaigns leads to unrealistic expectations. Not all streamed, podcasted, or similarly televised campaigns are "professional" Perhaps the most popular ones like Critical Role or Dimension 20, yes, but I doubt that holds true for the wide majority.
I know that its not the fault of the content creators
I know but it can happen doesnt mean it has to happen
This statement feels like you've taken what's happened in your home game and applied that to the general population
I didnt actualy i play d&d for 3 months with my friends and we are bad at the game but we have fun so everything is perfekt
Hey there
Hey
How are you? I'm looking for people to talk to via DM about DnD and characters or about having a campaign
I am absolutely brand new, have never played d&d before but have been interested in The concept for years!
My schedule is very full so I'm not expecting anyone to work around me, but if your playtimes fit into my schedule I would love to check it out and see if I'm a good fit!

We're in the same boat tbh. Would you like to check our schedules?
I'm open to it! Also going to try following the instructions of the bot that just replied to me XD
Hi! Can someone help me with more of the rules ik character sheets etc and Ik how magic works just I need help with spells etc
If you ask specific questions, folks can answer as they're able!
Such a general question is better answered by reading the rules
You can go into the https://discord.com/channels/516367331358801950/604757656565055589 channel and say there what level you are/ exepct to get to (if you start on 1 i would probably plan until level 3 so max tier 2 spells maybe tier 3 if you get to level 5) and then what role you play and they will give you some ideas what spells you could use and/or what all these spells do
Hey there š it's me again! I teased this before, but I'm in the process of creating my Bard Tiefling. I had trouble deciding on the right background (Noble or Sage), so I revisited the old ideas, removed the complicated parts, and chose what I found more exciting. Unfortunately, I can't decide between the two. What do you recommend? Any feedback? And what would you personally find more exciting?
-
A fallen Noble who once belonged to the aristocracy. Due to false accusations that were staged, he is branded a traitor and must go into hiding and assume a new identity. On his journey, he is wanted/hunted while deciding whether to seek revenge or accept a life as a wandering musician and forget his past.
-
A scholar/sage who works as a librarian. His magical abilities and spells come from books and writings of all kinds that he has found. The bard, who loves ancient texts and searches for lost knowledge, does so to unravel hidden secrets. Along the way, he uncovers mysterious codices containing a powerful spell. Because it involves secret information, he gets entangled in something dangerous.
Oh no am I in the wrong channel too?š„²
Yea but its fine
Play what you like moreš
Yayy I did it šš„¹
Whats the six stats agian I haven't played dnd in a while
?tag new abilities
Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
Ok how shall I post it
I have a picture but I can't post it here
In a dnd server I was in we gave a pic of the character
Use a reputable file sharing service (Google Drive or some such) and share a link (make sure to describe what the link is and what folks will see if they click it when sharing here).
I have a fair understanding of how dnd works, but Iāve never been part of a campaign. Is this server a place Iād be able to start/join a campaign with other people?

Correct. This is where you learn how to play.
Good day friends
Hello. I recommend looking at the pinned messages.
Hello! I came here to ask question about can be DM also a player or not, well I mean that I never heard about campaign where DM's character was not just NPC for quest or antagonist, but a part of the group.
so those are called DMPCs and generally, that practice is very frowned upon as so very few people can do it well. The DM already has enough on their plate running every enemy and NPC and environment, that taking the role of one of the heroes kind of dulls the shine for everyone else.
Afterall, the DM knows all the challenges and secrets.. they already talk like most of the time.. giving them a PC role as well is usually not a helpful thing
thank you for answer!
It can be done well though. And I feel like many people have succeeded in making their DMPC likeable. But like with a cake too much of one thing or too little of another thing can ruin it.
It generally requires two things; 1. for them to fit with the party's tastes and 2. for them to not hog the spotlight from the players
Giving the low-level party a plot-relavent NPC who travels with them a healer if they don't have one is, generally, a nice idea, for example
Yar
One of the things you can do is communicate ask if the players want a character you are playing as to help. But use the sidekick mechanics aka one lv below the party. They canāt be involved in the politics. You follow them not the other way around
ā¬ļø
All of that. The DMPCs cannot take the leadership or plot-driving role. In doing so, it undermines the party
@naive plume#dnd-newcomers message
hello peoples, my first session as a DM is tomorrow. I believe studied the ancient texts (core rules) and pondered my orb (YouTube videos) long enough to understand mostly what to do, but I still wanted to kinda ask if there are any tips thst I should keep in mind for a first timer?
"Yes, and" your players. DND is collaborative storytelling, so if your players want to do something, try and yes, anding and see what comes up. If you really cant "yes, and", try a no, but.
IMO having fun is most important. dont stress and dont be afraid to get silly.
everything u need to tell the story is in your and your players' brains
"Can i go to the great library and find information about this?"
"Yes, you find that Xanthor the Great has written a whole treatise on how holy water can stop the beast."
or
"No, this town is too small to have a great library, but [NPC] might know something about it. or you can go to [city] and use their library"
if players suggest something, it's usually bc they want to see it happen. let them have it most of the time. might give you cool ideas to where the story should go
but also with stuff like murdering other players or npcs it's important to be able to say no bc at that point they're ruining the game for others
just keep a good vibe and everything else will fall into place
Hi, I'm a new DM. Looking for cool one-shots or short-ish campaign settings! I have a hard time creating stuff from scratch, so I'm trying to start with premade/published stuff and go from there... Anyone can recommend any material?
what kind of vibe are you looking for? classic dnd fantasy,
theres all kinds of genres, im running an 80s high school game rn
My friends had this idea of trying some 80s-Cyberpunk stuff, but I wanted to try some classic fantasy first!
nice
That sounds fun!
most campaign books can work as oneshots
if u start with the first dungeon of like Mines of Phandelver or something it can work really well
theres also a mystery campaign called Mysteries of Candlekeep that has like a series of mysteries that can be run as oneshots
also cant go wrong with "you are in a tavern and suddenly [creature] invades the town."
Tales from the yawning portal: sunless citidel and forge of fury
Sc:1-3 ff:3-5
Lost of phandelver 1-5
Frozen sick.1-3
I canāt speak on heart of stone yet since I need to read through it
tales from the yawning portal is cool af because it's a bunch of remastered old D&D modules from 1979-2000
which is kind of a pain sometimes but so cool
if u wanna run a gary gygax original
Donāt run tomb of horrors as a new dm as you need to navigate allot to make it work
tomb of horrors SUX
its fun but its like the kind of fun where youre like "man im glad i did that even tho it sucked"
the urge to turn my campaign into a curse of strahd run is so strong
Is the 2024 dnd player book the best one to buy for a completely new player?
i havent read it yet
2014 is pretty tried and true classic 5e
but ive heard good things about 2024
i feel like most ppl are still running 2014 5e but i could be wrong
I am currently getting started and learning, first step is the player handbook.
How does a 11 year old book differ from something made in 2024?
i really dont know what changes theyve made
Or, I should ask why the preference?
just bc of time
like theres been more time for people to learn 2014 5e
i think theyre still the same at base
2024 is mostly a patch the free basic rules are there for bolth 2024 and2014
Is there a place in this discord to find maybe a check list of essential items to purchase to get started?
I downloaded dnd beyond, but have heard mixed things about the app.
i dont know of one but i think you would be good with just the players handbook and maybe some youtube videos
DND really boils down to "i want to do this thing." 'ok, roll the dice.'
I usually recommend starting with the free rules until you see what you like
I am unsure if I will like the game or not, but I am interested
You donāt need to buy anything the fee rules will get you started
#learn-to-play as well
formatted kind of poorly tbh
the link i mean
bro looking at this i just realized i still dont understand feats
the WOTC website used to have an online D&D demo you could play
idk if they still do
here it is
online dnd demo
Thanks for the recommendations!
In this subject, any thoughts on Keep on the Borderlands, for a new group?
From Quests from the Infinite Staircase? I'd say it's not ideal as it's a very atypical module designed more for people familiar with D&D and want their expectations subverted. That or players who are familiar with the original adventure
Hi guys
yo
i still can not figure out how to use it. i dont know anyone that dm's or even plays dnd. so ive kind of given up on trying to figure out how to actually play using the app. so i downloaded neverwinter nights 2: enhanced edition. its got a ton of expansion packs and modules you can get for it. it should be plenty there to get my dnd fix...
i just wish i hadnt bought an adventure pack and the dm level subscription, before i found nwn2. ive never been able to play d&d with real people. ive asked everyone i meet for the last 30 years. no one plays. :/
Do you play online with others? Or do you mean in person you have not met anyone?
You'll be wanting to find a group online. It's a popular way to play these days, often over voice chat but text-based games also exist. Here's some more info below.
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:

@odd ivy both. never was able to play dnd with anyone online or in person.
I hope to find people online. It is why I joined this dnd group. If not, I have at least 3 people that I can visit that are 40 miles away
@wild onyx yea i have crap luck i tried that. no luck. but also, i dont even understand what the beyond app even does :/ besides let me roll characters.
its all very confusing. im starting to see beyond is not even a game
or a game portal
Beyond looks after your character sheet. When you join a game it'll help roll your dice and relay the results to your group.
You can also look for games other places, like Roll20, the D&D Beyond forums or LFG on Reddit.
it would be fun to try a freal game. graphical and physical keyboard interface is restricting.
Game and hobby stores, libraries and school groups might help there.
its a supplement, it is supposed to make it easier for you to build and maintain a character as it does all the calculations for you.
Personally I wish there's an app that tracks existing actions/logs of a DnD game
I'd prefer not having to take notes but it seems like that's impossible
Dnd Beyond keeps track of what players roll... But I'm starting to think that's not what you meant.
Have you considered some sort of voice recorder, with the verbal permission of your party of course
Depending on where you are, it could be illegal to record people's voice without their informed consent
It's good to have permission anyway because it is rude otherwise.
hello again! So, how to fill character's sheet if I already have idea for character, I can write race or class or all things from above, but all other things a llitle bit more hard for me
On paper or digitally?
Is the process different?
Voice recorders could be a way, I was thinking in terms of tracking things during a session
It depends on how I'm gonna answer, yes
Well...
Yes?
I mean, I filling character sheet in Photoshop
Like 10 mins ago we'd came across an important NPC which provides context of what will happen later on, so something that tracks that automatically for us like chat logs in a way
... Well, with knowing this, I can inform you of bare basics.
Do you have a race, background and class in mind?
Well, my characters are screwed if that's the case
Yep
I made them in irl in the classic way
Alright, so if I remember correctly... And if they didn't change the format of paper character sheets, you pretty much write the name of your Character's name, Class, and Background at the top.
Any feature describe by these sources you write down in the feature slot and where such ability comes from and what it does.
Pretty much, any way you know what the abilities do and where they come from. Pretty much like a cheat sheet if anyone was gonna question what you can do and why
What about things like strength, intelligence etc

Oh, I understand, thanks for the explanation. I asked because I was afraid that the way to make a character in physical form is different than in virtual form, which would mean that I would have to transfer all the data to a new format or something like that
Oh no, it's the same information, just different ways to input it.
Like if you said digitally, I would of asked which program you were using.
DND Beyond or Owl Bear, whatever.
People tend to use digitally as it's WAYYY easier.
Ohh ok, yeah it's understandable. I just learned the physics and now I'm trying to learn the virtual but, tbh having so many programs could be a bit annoying since, well, having to compare data from other programs with yours is leaving me like
(Dunno if this falls under piracy cuz I'm not looking to pirate things)
Digital is also tended to be preferred during online games so players and DM can just click a link and see all your stuff.
I'm gonna assume that is, as you're working around paying to obtain content
Yes, I agree with that.
Sorry to seem ignorant with this question, but it's one I've had for a while. Are there established rules in DnD or are they imposed by the DM during the campaign?
On here, what is thw preferred (or at least most popular) program to use for online character sheets?
No issue, you are in a newbie chat.
I don't know if it's that popular but it's recommended, try Roll20
I'm seeing DND Beyond often
Okay, DND Beyond and Roll20
There are established default rules for the game. However the DM can choose to change them if they wish. Generally speaking, they should tell you any house rules or homebrew that they're using.
Thanks!
Oh ok, I'll check that out because I made my characters without being aware of that (Although calling them characters is a bit generous tbh)
It is good practice in making characters, thinking of backstories and the like.
You could always rewrite preexisting character to fit campaigns, it's often what I do.
I have multiple version of my fire Genasi who often swings between Paladin and Fighter when the session calls for it.
I've already made a character for each class just out of boredom in my free time, although it seems more like I create a new sin with each one I create. Just out of curiosity, is it normal for a level 1 character to have 19 AC? I basically tried to make a living wall.
How did you get to 19?
Turtle race + really heave armor + Cons stat
To be more specific, a turtle that is already made of metal with an armor that is made of metal on top.
The Tortle's base shell AC does not benefit from Heavy Armor or Constitution
As mentioned above, it is highly, highly recommended you read the rules of the game before trying to create characters in the game's framework
Visit #learn-to-play for everything you need to get started!

- [Where do I join?](#learn-to-play message)
- [Frequently Asked Questions](#learn-to-play message)
Fr? I read about this on the internet and tried to apply this tactic since I saw that it gives you a base AC of 16
Thankfully, the rules are free, listed above
I will check it, thx
The Tortle's base AC is 17
But because it's an AC calculation, it doesn't benefit from attribute bonuses or armor bonuses
The only non-magic item that can increase a Tortle's AC is a shield
Huh, I was misguided then. I asked a dude for help who told me he knew about DnD for calculating max hp and AC.
His backstory can't either? In this case his body constitution is not of an organic material
Backstories shouldn't affect mechanical abilities that the character has. It's considered one of the core faux pas of making a DnD character
That is to say, you can't give your character teleportation abilities just because their backstory said they got teleportation abilities, for example
All a character's abilities at creation are granted to them from their species, feats, and class
I checked my calculations and in this case I had done it with Dex, the second highest stat of my character.
Your armor dosent benefit from Dex
Oh ok, understood
So it doesn't benefit from Dex or Cons?
In this particular case, we fall back on the exact wording from the Tortle Shell in the rules:
Your shell provides you a base AC of 17 (your Dexterity modifier doesn't affect this number).
Yea, why you kinda have to read the features and what they do. Along with the conditions for what it does.
Reading is veryyyy important
As it can be case to case as to what does and dosent effect your abilities.
For example, mage armor doesn't work if you're wearing armor
Ohh ok, makes sense now
It's a shame anyway
Is unseen attack only one attack?
What's Unseen Attack from?
Understood. Tbh I didn't know about the existence of the rules until now, so I'll redesign my characters
Disappearing into sa fog cloud
Take a look! Can't play monopoly correctly if you don't know how to play monopoly, after all
Are you asking about the rules for Unseen Attackers?
Yup
What do you mean monopoly doesn't come with real money?
Let's bring this over to #dnd-rules , since it's a topic that's a bit too complicated for the newcomers chat here
Oh! I have another question, I heard on YouTube about dusty skeleton, but can't find it on other services
Never heard of it, so it's probably something homebrew.
Is it supposed to be a monster? A player species option?
Monster
Yeah, it's nothing that I've ever heard of. It's probably either from a third party homebrew book, or made up entirely by whoever was talking about it.
Also in this video was flaming skeleton, burning bones, decrepit skeleton, warrior skeleton, giant skeleton, bone golem and crystal skeleton, all of them homebrew too?
Some of those things are official, such as Flaming Skeleton, but other names like "Burning Bones" aren't familiar to me at all
Ok, thank you!
With things like YouTube you have to take some of what they say with a grain of salt/check to see what sources they're actually taking about. In case it's total homebrew, third party content or something else
Anyone have a group over discord available to join? Iām pretty new and trynna get into it

hello im new to dnd and was looking for groups to play with. currently have tabletop sim
I wanna learn how to play always been interested but was never able to play
the best way to learn is by finding a campaign in #looking-for-players , all i can say is that the Dungeon Master does most of the work for you, telling you what to roll.
as for character creation you can go on dndbeyond and do either a standard build or a quick build
iām looking for a campaign i can join in pretty new
Ok,so ive got a question that keep itching me rn
can you make a pc using enemie races?
and how would i build it around it?
hello! i with another question!( Holly Molly it my most questinable day) so... what races exist in DND? if you can please send something like a list about all races and maybe classes, i saw some but there was not all races
what are you trying to do
i just wanna know how it would work,i'm not really trying to make one...yet
same way you would make a pc just with the traits the enemies have
...oh
ooooo! wow! thank you!
if the dm allows it right?
like for example in mordenkainen's monsters of the multiverse it has a page about playing a goblin
yes
In the campaign I'm currently playing, we have a few players that are monsters, basically it's the same as how you would create any character. However, like @sacred otter said, you would use the traits the enemies have
And ask your DM too if you can play an enemy and they'll probably offer guidance too for creating your character
The goblin species presented in MMPM is an official species. Of course, there are differences from the goblin statblock presented in the monster manual, but thatās just because ones designed to be a fightable monster and the other a PC option
Hi everyone
Hii
Im a beginner lookin for a group to play this character with:

wait is that website also good for classes? i mean... i dont see assasin in rogue subclasses... is assasin even real subclass or homebrew?
The website he referenced is called dnd beyond and it is a place for all content published by wizards of the coast about dungeons and dragons and some third party content. There are other places you can find this material ofcourse.
But yes assassin rogue is a subclass š
phew, I started to think that all details in me characters was actually different homebrews, thank you for answer!
are you creating a rogue?
yes,with assasin subclass
Nice! I play as a rogue too but with a criminal subclass
Hello I'm new to DND never played before I'm looking to play in DND beyond how to start

I have another question! maybe a little bit strange, so... um I'l better tell with example, so intelligence at what amount of points with it the character is genius, smart, normal, silly and stupid? like (20-17 is genius! and 0-5 is dumb) or something like this
You donāt play the stats, itās just an abitraly number. How ever 20-25 maybe idk
Anything below... 6? Is considered pretty damn poor at something. Int below 6 is classed as barely even a sentient being, i think
i know, but it can be interesting to play stats!
ok! thank you!
10 is perfectly average and typical for whatever your race is, and every even number after it is your boost point, so 12, 14, 16, etc
I look at is as the likelyhood for the stats to benefit you, so anything below 10would give you a bit more of a disadvantage
10-11 is neutral
12 and up gives you a bit of a bonus
I hope that makes sense. basically if your intelligence is a 8, you'll have a -1 to your roll so thats a slight disadvantage to your roll
What are the most important rules to learn as a new DM? (Next bit is copy pasted because I put it in the wrong chanel) I'm a new DM(idk if I can call myself a dm yet since I haven't actually dmed a game yet ) what rules should I learn first before I DM for the first time, I know the very very basics from starting the tutorial of bg3, many podcasts and playing a oneshot but I'm not sure how to keep track of rolls or combat does anyone know where I should start ? I'd consider myself okay at characters, voices and descriptions but I can't keep track of stats for the life of me!(End of the thing I copy pasted) Also I gave myself a week to do this because I've been putting of learning the rules for way too long! I skimmed through part of the free rules thing but I can't pay attention to a lot of text at once or I get a headache lol.(Edit I forgot I can get text to speech to read it to me it's actually pretty useful but id still like advice lol)
Depends on how your playing:
if online have a platform and everyone must use it to track rolls.
Mainly character creation,
How to use monsters,
Cr and how they work
Combat
Tysm!!
can someone explain to me how attacks of opportunity work? i know how they are in PF1E but not 5e
I think I understand why ppl dont like this community
Uhh wiki says it's when an offending creature attempts to move away
For reference: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/rules-glossary#OpportunityAttacks
You can make an Opportunity Attack when a creature that you can see leaves your reach using its action, its Bonus Action, its Reaction, or one of its speeds. To make the Opportunity Attack, take a Reaction to make one melee attack with a weapon or an Unarmed Strike against the provoking creature. The attack occurs right before the creature leaves your reach.
So weapons have reach, most melee weapons are 5 feet but some are 10. If the target qualifies for the crtieria (you can see them, they do one of the things) the creature can make the attack as written above.
what about a wyvern that has reach with its tail but not its bite
A wyvern has reach with both attacks, as written in the statblock next to the attack
If the creature is within either of those ranges, they can make the opportunity attack with the corresponding attack
it has 5ft reach on bite
And 10 on the tail
So if the target is within 10 feet and tries to move away, it can make the OA with the tail but not the bite
If it's within 5, they can make the OA with either
hello again! so does a cloak count as leather armor?
No, 'cause cloaks aren't neccesarily made of leather
Oh this is the newcomer place
so.... then what kind of armor cloak is? like assasin cloak
... Wool? š®
Fabric, leather, fur, etc
Can someone explain a good vs a bad dm?
A bad DM actively wants to kill the party for fun. A good DM actively engages with players as an equal part of the story
well.... i could have guessed... but i didnt, thakns for answer!
Tbf, you weren't too specific XD CLoaks can be made of many materials not leather, so they don't class as leather armour
Is it good or bad when they want to your character specific to how they want them to be? And claims it as "advice"
Wood cloaks are a thing?
That... Depends on the context. If you've made a character that absolutely does not fit with the campaign, then the advice might be them trying to nudge you into being able to fit in. If they just don't like your character, then they're being a bad word I can't say or my post'll be deleted
If youāre feeling unheard by your dm, you should address that with them directly.
I want you to try and sell the idea of a wood cloak to your DM and watch them burn it in front of your eyes
That isn't really the right answer. There is not a simple answer to this question. A DM can be bad in many ways.
See I'm confused cause she told me no goblin so I remade them then she said no lycanthropy so I remade them into a snobby elf cleric and they removed me from their table and like I don't understand what's the problem because another player liked my elf and was going to make s druid who was the exact opposite of them
I was giving perhaps the simplest possible answer in the world, Ham
I think that was one possible answer. Doesnāt make it a bad answer.
Also cloaks are an accessory. Unless your cloak is magical you don't gain anything from it.
Were they giving you options or were they just saying 'no' without feedback?
It's not armor.
Just said no didn't give a reason
That, personally, wouldn't sit right with me if a DM isn't communicating
They told me only hand book races that's about it
What kind of elf did you choose?
I haven't ever done dnd before and the last 24 hours ain't been good I'm ngl
If you could be more specific about what they said we can better answer you
She was germapohic
Finding a good group is a challenge. It might take you months to find a solid group.
Is that what the DM had a problem with?
Some people are enigmas. Some people will kick you from servers or leave servers without any elaboration.
If it was this I can understand the frustration, especially if they told you PHB races only -- goblin and lycanthrope are not valid options
I have heard many people compare DnD with dating and I have to agree that this comparison is accurate.
Right, but then, why the removal with a High Elf Cleric?
No idea, I was merely speaking to the first two you mentioned. Not being able to follow instructions can be a warning flag for some DMs
Add in the fact that you were new, they probably felt better to just move on.
Ok so first I made a goblin who was a follow of Kord the god of battle and they said no goblins and no gods so I remade them into a human farmer cursed with lycanthropy (were-bear) then they told me no lycanthropy so made the generic elf healer character but I made her snobby stuck up and a germaphobe at first it was fine til she said she can't be snobby or stuck up but my friend gunshow was gonna make a character the exact opposite of my elf and then she said the back story didn't fit as there where no kingdoms so I changed it and adjusted it to her story but she still didn't accept it then argued with me about by elf being narcissistic but I didn't wanna change that because my friend was making a druid who is the opposite of my elf
I've never done dnd in my life so most of the character creation I did I had to look stuff up before even choosing jt
Goblins are not a race that is in the handbook. And lycanthropy is something that many DMs refuse to let you have.
Right, but looking at the issues with the High Elf... Why block personality traits? O_o seems bizzare
she said she can't be snobby or stuck up... she still didn't accept it then argued with me about by elf being narcissistic
So here is where I'd draw the line on the DM side. The DM shouldn't really have a say about your PC's personality unless it goes against the social contract of the game (i.e an adventurer that doesn't want to adventure, or a criminal who does nothing but murder everyone, etc.)
then she said the back story didn't fit as there where no kingdoms so I changed it
Not sure what the kingdoms stuff was about but if you didn't really pay attention to the setting that could also be another flag against you.
It was a completely custom world with once a city called Duskwatch and in the story we all had died bec a bloodhound released asmodeus the we got revived and I adjusted mt back story to that
As someone who has played obnoxious characters I have seen people take issue with the idea of characters being annoying.
Depends if the DM was already clear beforehand about the setting, tbf. A DM definitely shouldn't be picking at personality traits they might personally dislike. Especially since such characters can have something called 'development' and stop being annoying jerks
Thing is she was kind and generous upfront but behind door she was like a basic rich person
But maybe that's because you can do obnoxious right and you can also do them wrong.
Wym
How I was gonna do it was like she would heal people but didn't like touching or being near them because she's a germaphobe she wouldn't actually kill anyone but would hurt others if needed
If a character is very difficult they can become an obstacle to the party. Anyway I was just adding to my previous post. I was responding to your last post.
WHen looking at a lfg post ask whats ok and whats not, Example: PHB races only are races only form the player handbook, Human, Elf,Drgaonborn, Dwarf, halfing, tiefling
An obnoxious character doesn't have to murder or physically hurt their allies in order to be an obstacle. Anyway we are getting off topic.
Yeah Iād maybe just chill with all the character and backstory stuff next time and just be like a vanilla fighter dude. Like, just be a chill player and try like 10 dms to find the one who wants to run a more elaborate thing.
I don't recommend that.
She wanted us to have a backstory
Literally when I made my goblin her whole thing was me am toft will you fight Toft Toft will win etc
I encourage you to make a detailed backstory if that's what you want to do. Plenty of groups will welcome a detailed character.
No backstory or anything just follower of kord
I donāt know what kord or toft are.
Toft is the name of my goblin
Kord is the god of battle strenth and wars
@short grail I can definitely see both sides here. If the DM told you about their setting and content preferences, and you made several characters against those preferences, that can be seen as a negative. Add on to that your lack of experience, and I can see that adding up. However, forcing you to change your character because they didn't like their personality seems to be the DM overstepping their bounds, IMHO.
I would chalk it up to miscommunication and misaligned preferences. Should the DM have kicked you? As a new player, probably not. Did you learn some valuable lessons for going forward? I would like to think so.
There are also groups who welcome people who prefer players who don't invest too much time in their character' backstories. You just have to find the right group for you.
What's IMHO
Also another thing you need to keep in mind, assuming this is an online game, is that DMs have the privilege of having literally hundreds and thousands of players to choose from. That means they can afford to be picky. As others have mentioned, finding the right fit can be a long process, but fulfilling once you find the right group.
in my humble opinion
Schmo has been giving very good advice.
Ye
Sry I'm slow
Don't ever apologize for learning new things š You're fine
I've joined like 4 server but only 1 has any active ppl in it
Also a good chance Kord doesnt exist in this world. Again you need to ask, whats ok, whats not ok ext.
He doesn't? But on wiki it says he's one of the gods in dnd
(I thought it meant "in my honest opinion".)
For example: Im running a Lost Minds of Phandelver game, and I dont allow GOblins, Or Full orks due to then being heavly feutured in the game as enemys. And itll be hard to trust a good goblin and it can come close to singling them out
Was it a premade campang game or Homebrew
It was custom outside of campaign
Some DMs might make their own gods. Or use gods from a different setting.
both work ĀÆ_(ć)_/ĀÆ
But I think Kord is just a god in general of dnd?
If this is a homebrew setting then they have thier own gods or diety or none what so ever
When I write it I mean humble
Some settings have no gods
Doesnt mater if its a homebrew world
There is no "general D&D" which might be part of the confusion
There are many settings, and each setting has its own pantheons, and its own history and lore
So wiki is wrong?
If you where playing in the forgetten realms or what ever no, If its somthing the dm made. Then you can iqnore allot of it
Every dm is different if they running thier own setting they will have thier own gods.
Oh ok
I don't know what wiki you were looking at
DMs get to choose how religion works in their world. For a brief moment I played as a dragonborn cleric of Toman, the god of magic circles. This deity was an original creation of my DM.
But every setting is different, even established settings can be completely different than what is within "official" lore
Greyhawk
The DM is the creator of the world and can change literally anything they like
So even an established setting like Greyhawk might be missing "official" gods if the DM chooses to do so or whatever. Always ask your DM about their setting and what fits/doesn't fit
In fact some DMs might completely alter the lore of official creatures such as elves and vampires if they feel like it.
So dms have freedom to do what ever but we don't?
You have freedom to control your character, but generally no, the player does not get to define things on a world-building level
You can always come to the dark side, though š
Hmm ok
There's Star wars in dnd
:0
There's a SW conversion for 5e and even a handful of SW TTRPGs... but I just meant becoming a DM yourself š
Is it hard being a dm?
Challenging but rewarding.
what dooes hit dice,cp ep sp gp and pp means ?
thanks!
What's a good dm for beginners or do I just do what ever comes to mind
Only think I can thing of is space prison break leading to a heist
Hey there, how do you get into dnd and find other people to play with?^^
Idk I've only been into it maybe 30 hours now try asking for a party
Modules are the best way to start. Pre-written adventures.
I recommend checking the pins.
oh sorry, where are they?
I downloaded all the free books on dnd beyond could I use those?
oh found it
thx im blind
That's for looking for games. Learning the rules is the best way to start.
Kk i guess looking into DND Beyond and read basic rules“n stuff?
If one of those books has an adventure you can run, sure.
Yes. There are a few other things you can check out in the pins.
The only one with an adventure is frozen sick is that beginner friendly
I saw a ping then it disappeared who did it
hey anyone know where to look for some groups?
Is it possible for if persay thereās a god of strength npc and I give them like 30+ is that allowed???
Check #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community
I have never played that one. I have heard that the Lost Mines of Phandelver is also good for beginners. I think that's also free.
It was free to claim a while back but it's no longer available for free.
30+ levels?
Gods are typically not statted as they are not supposed to be fought by mortals
Probably if your the dm anything is possible
I am the dm
But fighting a god is fun
D&D doesn't stat gods (except avatars of gods)
Ye Iām going to make my players fight Thor
This channel is supposed to be for helping new to D&D folks get started with the core game rules/mechanics
If you want to discuss DM topics, try #dm-discussion
Ok
And if you're looking to homebrew a creature/monster/god statblock, check with the folks in #homebrew
Lots of good advice above, but most importantly, learn the basic rules first whether you are a player or dm
Hello
I-i don't think they're gonna win
There's a library near my apt it opens tomorrow would it have dnd rule books?
It's worth checking out if they do - and they may be able to request it via interlibrary loan if they don't.
anything to know when you want to play your first game? obviously the basic Rules but anything not so obvious?^^ that could help
Thereās six of em 2 are beast master ranger they got the numbers and though there all level 8 and thors a level 15 I think they got this
In '14?
Huh
Thor isn't a pushover. They might have numbers, he has power. If he actively bullies them one at a time, stategically, could very easily be a TPK... or at loeast suffer some big losses
I'm going to nudge this discussion (again) to #dm-discussion as it's not a topic for this channel
So please take it there as you discuss how yo're going to run your game and balance it for your player's characters.
Thanks!
I heard of different rulesets or smth like that. is that important to keep in mind?
So recently D&D released updates to 5th edition D&D - the 2024 materials.
They have some changes although it's more of making things easier to understand and easier to apply.
The initial D&D 5e rules are often referred to as the 2014 rules and the 2024 updates are often referred to as the 2024 rules.
with each level the character gets all of the features or player must choose 1?
You get whatever features your level up provides.
and you can get infinity amount of features or only few for character?
So should you know both or is it just 2024 now?
I would focus on the 2024 updates as that's where the game is headed although you can use 2014 materials in a 2024-based game.
No - each class level up provides a set of features for that class. You get those on each level up. It is not infinite.
The free rules are available here. Theyāll get you started. You could run a whole game just with these.
well i meant... well on level 20 "features" point on sheet will be all in features? that your class can get
Nope.
Features are like a path you take. There are also the paths you didnāt take.
Perfectly said ^^
So next time you start a new character, you might take a different path.
Otherwise every high level character would be exactly the same. Hey, a party of clones!
so on lv 1, rogue can take only Expertise or Sneak Attack or Thievesā Cant or Weapon Mastery and on lv5 ,Cunning Strike or Uncanny Dodge, not all of them in one time from their levels, yes?
No. You get everything it says you get at each level
Hello!
just finished my first ever session of DND, i'd like to thank everyone for the tips given here in this channel.
is it normal to feel embarassed role playing as your character? i enjoy the aspect of quick-thinking when in my character, deciding how my character would react during interactions and seeing the environment during the time a DM is describing it, but for some reason i can't get off the feeling of being shy and embarassed, hopefully i get used to it soon.
Totally normal.
Some people never will enjoy the full on acting style of play. Itās not necessary to play that way if itās not your style.
And some find they become comfortable with it and love it.
All ways are good if youāre having fun.
so on lv 20 there will be all features from every level?
No one's expecting anyone to lay down Crit Role performances c: No one's expecting you to be able to sound like a 76 year old grandmother perfectly 100% of the time, and no one will judge you for not roleplaying the character. Just like how no one is judging you for roleplaying the character. All you gotta do is find out which you have more fun with, and do that c:
No. Some levels make you choose x or y or z. Like level 3: choosing your subclass.
If you choose options A of your subclasses, you cannot take options B, C, etc
You will be locked into that choice until the end of time
And some are āchoose a featā but there are tons of feats and you just get to choose one.
So if I, as a Warlock, choose Hexblade, I cannot ever have features specific to the other subclasses
ok,but is there any other things like subclasses that make you choose?
Some, but you'll find them as you play and level in a class
Itās a path. Not a destination.
Itās not an āunlock treeā like a videogame.
ok,I suppose I understand now, thank you all!
My friend is a lycanthrope, if he takes a level of paladin will he be cured of lycanthropy?
... Nnnnnnnno?
He is a werewolf by birth
Lycanthropy is a curse
^
Were it so easy, Clerics could wipe out lycanthropy with very low effort, but app you need to cure it and remove the curse at the same time which is why it's not so easy
im building a universe from the ground up
Sounds like a #dm-discussion or #dm-world-building topic
Oh sorry :ā]
Welcome - please don't all-caps messages. It's disruptive to chat and an accessibility issue (folks that need to use text to speech tools sometimes hear all-caps messages as individual letters, not words. It's very annoying).
If you're new to D&D, check out #learn-to-play and the pinned messages here in this channel for useful links and resources to help get you started.
may i ask, is it normal for me to want to use my skills if i think it's allowed? or will this be disruptive and annoy my future DMs?
like if the scene let's us walk a path in the forest, is it normal if i want to use perception/survival to see if i miss out on anything?
or during npc interactions i want to roll insights? if we find something remotely magical i roll arcana to see the history of the item?
The basic game loop is the norm (in my experience)
The DM describes the scenario, the players describe what their characters would like to do, and the DM narrates the results (optionally calling for a roll)
Absolutely nothing wrong with asking that. It's only a problem if the DMs tells you no and you keep insisting on having them let you make that check.
As a DM I would have a problem with that, so YMMV.
Most DMs I've seen prefer players to narrate their desired actions
At the very least it would be a good idea to ask what your DM's preference is
Hmm, I see. I guess that depends on the DM then.
Though everyone will agree that insisting is not the way to do things.
Also i don't know if this is the correct place to ask this, i joined multiple campaigns, the other campaign i joined is being led by a beginner DM, but i just don't feel the passion within this DM, we had a session the other day that lasted for 4 hours, but the entire time the story was lead by us, the players, rather than the dm? is that normal? for example
We were in the forest, we kept asking for the description, the dm seemed to be so distracted, there was even a point where the dm was just silent for like 15~30 minutes leaving us the player to just converse ( still in character, but with no real aim/direction) i understand since this was done online that distractions are normal, but it completely killed the vibe, how do i respectfully pull out of the campaign? im nervous i might offend them since they are new and i somehow feel like im an *sshole for expecting something more..
Hi yall
hello!
The players are the heroes of the story, so it would make sense that their actions drive it
However, leaving the players in silence for 15-30 minutes is highly unusual
(Assuming they left you with no direction at all)
Can someone help me play? And explain everything
Not all groups will be compatible with you so there's nothing wrong with wanting to leave. However I will say that a DM not giving you any guidance is unusual and not expected of a DM.
First I need to figure out how to join an online game can someone teach me that first
I would start by checking the pins.
Just to clarify I was replying to Halsin.
Hi cosmic! i recently started my DND adventure last week, a few things i can recommend is checking the pinned notes in this channel, heading over to dndbeyond/roll20 website to create your character, and lastly watching a ton of info videos on youtube ( if you are someone who enjoys it)
if you have any background with roleplaying games, online or offline ( baldurs gate 3, perfect world, etc) these can help you as well
The very first thing i did was to spend time in a quiet place and visualize my character, creating an entire character on a whim is fun no doubt, but for my first character, i wanted a basic character that i can mold easily into different campaigns.
I started by looking into what values or characteristic of personalities i'd like my character to have, for me since im in med school i wanted a character that aligned to my values of saving or being a healer, from there i decided what my character would look, etc
Also I just saw your name and pfp and... holy mother of bears! Silvanus, conjure me up river to wash away my sins! šļøšļø
I can't help it! halsin is just too beautiful ā¤ļø
I must applaud your taste.
oof, tell that to every traffic sign
Well... usually you're not using text to speech to drive...
Yeah we just ask folks to be careful with formatting text (for instance strikethrough text is just read normally with no indication that it's struckthrough so text to speech tools read it like regular normal text meaning the strikethrough is completely ignored. This can be very confusing for text to speech users.)
But back to D&D.
i see
Is there a place to put looking for a game on here lol
Yep - give #find-a-game to learn how to use our Looking for Game channels to find a group to play D&D with
does anyone know where the primal summoner invocation comes from? ive been looking for the past hour but cant find anything\
Nothing official I can think of
Hey I'm just starting my D&D journey, I made a character expecting to be in a group irl but they moved and I never got to play anyone offer tips or advice?
Maybe try finding a virtual group, I myself am trying to dm online but havenāt found a group yet.
Hello, im verry new to dnd, i been wanting to play it for a long time now and i was wondering where should i start
I wanna play virtually and idk where to start
Iād try finding someone whoās willing to dm using this server, itās a good way to find others to play with.
Or do you mean where to start on how to make characters/gameplay?
I know some aspects of the game but never fully
And yes please
How much do you know?
There is a session 0 that explains the rules and standards
I know you have to make a character sheet and put in stats based on your rolls
And how dice rolls determine your actions and how to roleplay
And idk anything about lore
Depending on your dm, the lore doesnāt always matter too too much. Iāve played for about a year and never read about 90% of itās lore, but if you want to go for it.
I want to start online but what are the tools or apps needed
And donāt worry, once you get the hang of making characters and knowing how the base systems work, itās simple.
Good olā pen and paper, and maybe some books lolā¦
I dont have acess to pc on most days so i use my phone
Iād just use Discord for playing online and have all of your info on paper
Iād recommend at least getting a physical copy of the 5e or 6e playerās handbook, theyāre very similar and itās easy to apply the rules to the other version
...i dont have the resources to get that TwT
My town doesnt even have em
Oh, youāre unable to even order one?
You are able to search specific things up, but I donāt think the whole book is out there for free
I see...
Although i did find a character sheet maker
I just hope i can find a beginner friendly campaign
Imma share it once i make my character
There's no "6e players handbook" FYI
There are two 5th edition player's handbooks; the 2014 version and the 2024 version
I thought it was considered that
No, it's not
My problem is how does one make character
You can, there are 4 licensed digital platforms for D&D 5th edition, one of which is actually the official one:
- D&D Beyond (Official, owned and run by WotC)
- roll20*
- foundry*
- fantasy grounds*
*These are all virtual tabletops (tools for replicating a table and minis online), so they're not great for just having the books digitally to read
You can also just read the D&D Free Rules

Im a bit overwhelmed but im determined to learn
Another simple way, which is how I learned, see what other people do. Watch some YouTube videos
Thatās great! You should definitely learn how to play
Start with the fre rules and read through the chapters on how the game is played and how to make a character (literally the first two chapters)
I have read through alot and am familiar with most of the stuff
I know dnd thanks to youtube stories and other media
I think then you probably know enough to start playingš
Hi I just joined
Welcome!
If youād like to use this server to find a group to play with check out the instructions in #find-a-game !
Hey never played but got all the books Iāve wanted to play for the last 5ish year but never had time.
Would be interested in a game if anyone needs another player
Welcome! For group search this server has its own channels. Check out the thread link that StarOfTheLight posted above.
Thanks bud
Are they new to TTRPGs as a whole or just DnD?
I'm partial to Peril in Pinebrook, a really boiled down and simple to run adventure for very new groups.
If they know the basics, I like "A Wild Sheep Chase" by Winghorn Press.
I love sheep chase, it's great for introducing so many parts of DnD, and the story is also funny.
Hii, I just got my first dice set but realized I have nobody to actually play with :cc how would I go about finding a group here?

were can i have help in 4e about classes and races
Hi soo im a bit confused cuz im getting thinges to play and when i checked i need 2x D10 and is it a D100 like D10 but Instead 4 there is 40?
#dnd-elder-editions should be able to help āŗļø
A d100 actually rolls 1-100, the 00,0 represents 100 instead of 0
Yes, one D10 with numbers 0-9 and another D10 with numbers 00-90.
That way you can roll any number between 0-100
Ok thanks : D
Tbh if you wanted to flex some physical dice you could nab an actual d100 off of amazon or similar. Theyāre like $10+ though haha
Are there limits to the creativity that DMs have when making Campaign Bosses/Mini-bosses and their mechanics? for example i thought of 2 Bosses that include custom mechanics that are hidden to the players.
-
An Ice queen that turns the battle-field into a frozen slippery area, the queen no longer relies on AC to get hit, but rather, when the party attacks, they need to hit a hidden roll amount using d20 ( let's say they need to roll 11) plus their acrobatic bonus? are those things allowed?
-
A poisonous Druid that casts confusion, players need to roll a d20 and hit 9 or else they hallucinate, they use their nature skill to add as a modifier.
(apologies if i use the wrong wordings, i hope i got my point across)
You could do these things. They're not part of the rules of D&D and some players may take that poorly. Why not use the rules for icy flooring and the confusion spell?
Hi All,
I am a complete noob, total newcomer to DnD, over the past few days I have been watching (and listening to, during work) Critical Role, I have found it really entertaining and it seems like its a blast, I have seen DnD be played out over the years and have always thought about dabbling, but never actually done so. Today (or rather... hopefully soon), that changes. I bought the 2024 player handbook, and spent all of yesterday making my first character on DnD Beyond (I probably spent way too long writing his backstory and researching who his enemies are lol) - as a side note I reckon this is one of the more exciting aspects for me, the actual roleplaying of a character ( I have even bought a weathered journal to write my incantations in!). So, with all of that in mind, I have a few questions:
-
Where do I go from here? Is it a case of trying to reach out to DMs on Roll20 that have open party slots to see if I can join?
-
From your experiences how realistic is that a total noob will be able to join these players, I don't know what I don't know.
-
From your experiences, is it more common that people play physically in person around a table or digitally on somewhere like Roll20?
-
What should be the main focus for a new player? I have immersed myself in content over the past few days, but I may be focusing on the wrong stuff and overlooking what is more important.
Lastly, sorry for this monolithic wall of text. Thank you to anyone that takes the time to read it
-
Yes, or #find-a-game , LFG on Reddit or the D&D Beyond forums for starters.
-
Don't worry about it. If they want experienced players, they'll say.
-
These days, digital. It's super convenient to organise a group.
-
Be alert, be aware, be engaged, take notes. If you hear anything about safety tools please pay careful attention. The game's about having fun together.
Thanks
Another question that just popped into my head - when you have a party and you are in the middle of a campaign, what happens if you can't make it that day for night? Is the play suspended, or does play continue without your character and some fitting RPing reason is given
really depends on the situation/party. sometimes they will play without you, sometimes (usually) the session will be cancelled or postponed
i usually cancel my game if someone canāt make it. i think most dms do it the same way
Okay thanks
hello again! so... um if I want my character sheet to be checked for errors where should I send it? Im almost sure there are mistakes in it
hi! i think itās fine tosend it here. if you canāt attach files, you can dm me. i am happy to help
Hi there! If you have a sharable link (like from d&d beyond) it's easy to post for folks to view. Generally, we prefer #character-discussion for advice on sheets/builds/backstory etc
Just to keep channels more clear and on topic. We can help with general, newer user questions here though
hi I'm completely new to dnd ;v;
I saw it online and it seems interesting so here I am... how do I start playing if no one around me plays dnd?
The great part is that now a lot of people play online
#looking-for-players
#looking-for-community
Are channels id recommend to find online groups. These two categories do not require payment to play whereas #paid-looking-for-game does.
You may get a more consistent experience in a game you pay for (people showing up on time and prepared)
But that is not required for a newer player looking to get started.
tysm š I'll check both out
How would one write out a campaign based upon the movie honey I shrunk the kids
so dnd is just entirely roleplaying right? i have been wanting to play it, which i thought was a game actually, and recently learned its not i still want to get into it but im still a tad bit confused
A mix of roleplaying and dice-play, yeah
is the lore up to the host?
The DM? Basically, yeah
They're the narrator and guide of the evolving story you're in; it's up to them to set the scene
sounds really interesting, thank you!
It Techicly a game but not in the traditional sense table top roleplaying games have three pillars: social (roleplay),combat(dice rolling and moving kn a map, exploration
Of note, DnD has these pillars, but other ttrpgs might be different.
Most of them tend to use the three pillars as a base. Each one can play differently tho
But I know an example of one that only has 2: End of the line
Im not even sure where to start here

Why do bards keep trying to seduce my characters
Short version:
If you're a DM, because you're letting them. If you're a player, because your DM lets them. It's a bad meme.
Havent played dnd in years but i did go through one Champaign before and it was in person but all that experience has disappeared so im basically a brand spanking new player any tips?
- No one is the main character, so try to cooperate with your fellow players.
- Similarly, the DM is not your enemy. Try to respect and lean into everyoneās fun (including the DM's) rather than privileging your own.
- When thereās a problem, in game or out of it, communicate to solve it.
- Be mindful of othersā boundaries and your own. Itās a more active, intimate form of entertainment, so be respectful when people say what they donāt want to deal with.
More tips here: #dnd-newcomers message
It's weird I'm just trying to be the party healer
This can and should be a conversation among the table if this makes you uncomfortable.
Yeah. I suggest talking with your group out of game and address that. You shouldn't be made to feel weird.
The game should be fun for everyone.

@hearty escarp @harsh fjord that helped thank you I was just worrying I'd get removed for causing problems I been watching too many dnd tts
Ok so is this the place to be to find ttrpg cyberpunk players?
not really. this is a DnD only server. Maybe you can be directed to a place like that in #non-dnd-topics
I have a question for character creation. can a characters race "evolve" or change in any way-shape-or-form throughout the campaign? Let's say I start as a human, and later mutate to ghoul?
Not to a ghoul, at least in the way youād likely be thinking. Thereās only a few ways to change your species in the game.
-
High level spells like Reincarnate or True Polymorph can change what kind of creature you are. The former requires your character to be dead and the new species you become is effectively random from a small list of options. The latter can change you into something like a ghoul as long as your character is of a level equal or higher than its CR. Thereās a few other stipulations in the spell description that I would read up on.
-
The lineages introduced in Van Richtenās Guide to Ravenloft are another option to āchangeā your species. There arenāt specific rules on how to gain these lineages, since itās mostly up to what the DM decides, but there are rules on what happens if you do.
Oh okay thank you. The thing is, my oc is an amorphous glob of Osmium, and his race is warforged. And I'm thinking if it's not more accurate for him to be a plasmoid. Any thoughts?
Hello! Iām new to DnD. Iām joining my first campaign in a week or two but I wanted to do some testing beforehand, get some tips, etc. (Iām also new to discord. If Iām doing this wrong sorry) Can anyone help direct me?
This strays from the typical presentation of both races, so assuming your DM is ok with the concept I would just pick the species that has the mechanics you want more
I see, thank you. I think I'm sticking with the warforged race(my oc is HB), bc he is an unsuccessful conjuration of a great ferromancer who got killed mid casting his spell.
Iām new to dnd and would really like to get to know the game any tips or suggestions for me

^ always a good shot
If itās for a character #character-discussion may be a thing
Thanks!
If you wanted to get character feedback thereās #character-discussion ! Otherwise for new players my advice would be:
- Have the Free Rules on hand so you can look stuff up as needed if you get confused/lost
- Donāt stress playing āperfectlyā or making the ārightā decision. Play to your character, but be cautious when negative behavior unfairly or excessively impacts other players.
- Healthy communication makes or breaks games. If you have issues above the table (I.e. you stop having fun) itās important to discuss it with your other players & DM. No shame in leaving a bad table either; no D&D is better than bad D&D.
- Hydrate!
- Donāt stress having to stay in character 100% of the time or speak in character every time you want to do something. āRobian attempts to convince the guard to let us passā is just as valid as actually RP-ing a dialogue out.
Check out the links in the Dyno post above!
Thanks
Thanks again (#4 lmao)

Many folks are fine playing with new to D&D folks as long as they put in the effort to learn as much as they can on their own so the whole group doesn't have to spend their precious game time teaching all the things but instead can spend a moment or two explaining things or helping clarify things.

how do I start all these words look confusing
Hey wlecome! A good place to start are the free basic rules which you can find in the bot post above. Feel free to ask any questions you may have here while you read.
okie thanks
Tbh some of the most fun ive had are with new players, at least those who are passionate with learning and playing. So actually i like/prefer to play with newer people as long as they try to learn.
I'm willing to join a online server to learn and play. Like I mentioned I had created a character already.
yeah allot of dms are more than happy to have a new player so long they read the rules befor hand or know some basics so not to interupt the game
hello guys im new to dungeons and dragons
like hecking new
are their any main bases i should start learning off first?
You could always just try looking at the handbooks
is there like a handbook online?
like good ones that are like the actual books
There's a free rules document you can access that gives you the basics you need to learn and run the game in it's simplest form
Otherwise, stuff like the full Players Handbook and the Dungeon Masters Guide are all books you'd have to purchase
Either a physical copy or a digital copy hosted on DndBeyond
thank you ill give them a look

hi. you can check #paid-looking-for-game and #looking-for-players

ok thanks
I have a question just for a beginner which is me right which oneās more suitable or more for beginners in 2024 D&D classes ranger or Rogue and which one is better I wanna play Ranger, but I donāt know if I should
Because we have
Because in our party we have 1. Dhampir Battle Smith Artificer
-
Dragonborn Path of the World Tree Barbarian
-
Dragonborn Oath of Devotion Paladin
-
Halfling Warrior of Shadow Monk
-
Human Evoker Wizard
-
Human Barbarian(didn't play in the last session so I don't believe they have a subclass Life Domain Cleric
All rangers have spellcasting (whereas only one rogue subclass does), which adds some complexity to things. But if you want to play a ranger, play a ranger!
Really
Well, the only two classes for Ranger and rogue I have our thief and Hunter
Iām using 2024
subclasses dont change rangers ability to cast spells
actually that applies to all classes
if you can cast spells, your subclass will never stop you from doing that
maybe it will enhance it, but never prevent it
I'd say the Thief (which is to say, Rogue) is slightly easier to play, if you want a simpler start. Though getting the grip of spellcasting (for Ranger) isn't an insurmountable obstacle if you've got a mind to do it.
Ah, perhaps my initial introduction shouldāve been made here. My mistake.
FYI Barbarians do have subclasses, just like any other class
ok quick question where would on eplay dnd online and would anyone like to play ?
You don't need to make introductions, this server is too big and active for that to serve any purpose. Just start chatting
i tried that and nothing helped XD
What do you mean "nothing helped"?
i mean like where do i go to play and such things like that you know
i only see the instructions nothing more so are people just not looking for groups or is there something i must do before hand
XD Fair enough, my friend, fair enough.
Those instructions tell you how to either post or respond to posts in order to find groups to play with
ahhh so since theres no posts then no one has a game starting im guessing
You haven't read the instructions it seems
Go back to #find-a-game and read the instructions, all will become clear
On DnD beyond I wanted to make a character sheet, just trying here and there, shouldnāt you be able to choose an origin from the first level? It only letās me chose at level three?
Sorcerer
You're thinking of subclasses, which are 3rd level for all 2024 classes and most 2014 classes
Origin is your species, background, and starting stats
To make sure I looked into the original handbook, there are three bloodlines for sorcerers available at level 1, thatās still included in the Sorcerers class.
That would be 2014 Sorcerer
Oh
If you're trying to make that on D&D Beyond, you need to enable 2014 content from the first page of the character builder, and then select the correct version of the class. The one with the
icon
Not the
icon, that's the 2024 version
Which version is played the most currently?
There's no data, and that's kinda irrelevant
The only thing that matters is what versions your DM is allowing
So 2014 characters can also play with 2024 characters in one story?
If you're just practicing making a character, do whichever one you feel like
Oh I see thanks!
Yes. Though typically a DM won't make put, for example, a cleric using solely 2014 rules and a rogue using solely 2024 rules in the same party. There are some races and subclasses that haven't been updated yet though. But you can still combine these things.
Ello!
hi
hello
So I'm not new to D&D by any means, But I'm new to the discord.
I'm curious as to what thread I should be using to find players to join an upcoming game?
read the instructions in #find-a-game and all shall become clear
Thank you
ok this could be a stupid question but whats the best way to learn things in D&D?
There is no single best way; different things work for different people. Some options:
- You could watch some games played on YouTube or Twitch just to see what it's like in action. (Podcasts also work for this purpose.) Don't expect your home game to look like a professional production, though!
Watch one explainer video.

thanks
Hello everyone, I'm new to dnd overall so I was going through the players handbook but it's honestly quite long. What are the main things I should know before starting ?
You don't need to reall all 370-ish pages. The first few chapters, then the species and classes you're interested in, then skimming through the remaining few chapters is plenty
The main sections you should focus on are character creation and combat. You don't have to memorize everything before you start playing, but the more information and knowledge you have ahead of time, the smoother your first session will go. There will be 4-5 other people there with you to help remind you of anything you forget, and you can always pull out the books while playing as well, but you don't want to have to pause the game over every little thing.
Thank you, how do games usually work in the server. Is it a simple system using a newly created channel for the party or there are other ways ?
Howdy who how do you do everyone i am new here and I was wondering if I could join anyone's campaign if they'd let me im rather new to dnd i got into it through bg3 but over all I've fallen in love with its lore and character creation
No games are hosted on this server. Folks can connect through the LFG channels (see #find-a-game), and set up games on their own.

This server is a place to discuss the game and connect with other players, but its not a place to actually play the game
Ah thanks, I didn't know that
If you find a group that you want to play with through the LFG channels, then its up to your group to set up a method of communication between yourselves. You might make a new server, or just do a group DM, or exchange phone numbers, or whatever else you can think of. As many ways as there are to communicate with other people is how many ways there are to play D&D

hey. here is a good video: https://youtu.be/hNNBjVmNbQI?si=eyMnyeaKmiJWBLEZ
Make sure you have a general idea on how your character sheet works, and dice rolls, and general game mechanics. Don't have to know everything but being familiar with things will help your D&D group focus on the game rather then have to teach you everything from scratch.
Also remember you're one of several players at the table (including the DM!). Try and make sure everyone around you has a chance to shine and make sure to focus on fun.
If something is feeling off and not fun, ask the DM to pause the game and discuss it as a group and figure out how to resolve it.
The most important thing though is that you're playing a game and games are for having fun.
Thank you guys
happy to help ^^
So I'm writing a dnd campaign based on honey I shrunk the kids and I was wondering if the first enemy should be an ant or dust bunny
hello guys im new to d&d and im going to dm a game online with my frends and i was wondering wats a good website to host a campaign and that is easy to use?
you mean like... battle maps?
i use bag of mapping: its not the most advanced virtual table, but it gets the job done
I use one that is very beginner friendly called Dungeon Club
I like it because it's simple, but some people don't like it because it does lack a few features (idm tbh because I run a one man campaign with a buddy of mine)
I'd suggest checking with folks in #third-party for other tools folks like to use for their games.
Roll-20 is by far one of the better kne as it has allot of the 5e srd included and itās easy to make characters and track things.
Am I allowed to make campaigns but then give them to other people to use?
Like is there a type of platform for that kinda thing
#dm-discussion might be a better place to ask
Ok ty
Has anybody been checking out Sigil? I'm thinking about using it to DM my games online.
got invited to a server for dnd and day of the one shot waited 4 hours for a dm to show up only for it to get cancelled, so the guy who invited me said he'll host a campaign and that was cool i said i was down.. when i asked for a update i got kicked..

I have dnd beyond, is that ok?
That's a perfectly fine tool to use to manage character sheets, digital access to books, and other tools to help with playing D&D.
As a note we don't host games here.
So if you're looking for a game, please see this message: #dnd-newcomers message
and also check out #find-a-game
Ok, because Iāve played DnD and hosted a game
And I just wanted to know how things go around here

Hello there, new DM also, got a question, since you add your ability modifier to the damage with melee weapon, does it works the same for spells? Like do you add charisma modifier to the damage as a warlock when you cast firebolt ?
Nope! Fire bolt, for example, is just 1d10.
Adding your modifier to weapon damage is intrinsic to weapons, specifically
Not for spells, no. There is an exception for warlocks called Agonising Blast which is an eldritch invocation they may select. That does it.
Ok i get it !
Great, gonna host my first DM game in two weeks, my brain is on fire haha
We'll be happy to help in the meantime
Here's the direct quote from the rules:
When attacking with a weapon, you add your ability modifierāthe same modifier used for the attack rollāto the damage roll. A spell tells you which dice to roll for damage and whether to add any modifiers.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/playing-the-game#DamageRolls
Some spells do have modifiers built into them, but there's no guesswork or baseline assumption built in. You simply read the spell and do what it tells you to do
Thx so much !

if you are an absolute noob, i recommend this video
i understand it now
is there any android app i can use to play? i installed dnd beyond downloaded a free book but i dont understand how to play it
Typically, you need at least one other person to play - a DM (dungeon master) who tells the story and runs the npcs for you (the player) - though a d&d game is rarely 1 on 1, most dms will have 3-4 players
there are apps that help you with stuff like managing your character sheet or looking up rules.
The online apps house things like your character sheet, rules and online dice rollers that you will use to play, but it's not like angry birds where you play solely with the app
but getting into a DnD games is not at all like video games. its more like getting a couple of friends together for board game night. (though it can be done with strangers online)
And itās hard to play d&d with a moble phone unless itās a in person game
Certainly not impossible! You can talk, via text or voice, and if you're using D&D Beyond you can use your character sheet. That will send any dice rolls you make to the campaign log for the DM and other players to see.
It's honestly not, I've played D&D over the phone using the discord app or whatsapp group calls
All that's needed to play D&D is a way for you and your friends to talk together
The players have their character sheets and dice, the DM has their notes and stat blocks, and everyone just describes what they're doing
Hello! I'm new to DnD, I've played wargaming and tcgs for decades but wanted to try DnD out. Looking forward to learning

Is dark magic available for sorcerers
Depends on what you mean by dark magic.
DnD doesn't really have "dark magic" as a general concept

yo can somone explain magical secrets to me im confused by the wording?
2014 or 2024?
2024
basically once you hit level 10, whenever you learn a new spell you aren't limited to just the normal bard spells, you can pick cleric, druid, and wizard spells as well
Yes. As a bard, you have a fixed number of spells you have prepared, shown in the class table.
ok so i could replace all my prepped spells with wizard spell's?
No, since you can only replace existing bard spells with other spells on a level up.
Since you get Magical Secrets at level 10 and the max level is 20, that's 10 spells you can replace with ones from Bard/Wizard/Druid/Cleric

Hello!
Any game master that wants to teach from zero this newbie how to play online?
Check the materials in #learn-to-play and the pinned messages here. If you have specific questions about the game rules, mechanics, or process of making a character sheet, feel free to ask here. We unfortunately don't have time to teach folks D&D one on one but we recommend reading through the free rules, watching videos/streams of actual D&D play, trying your hand at making a character or two, then when you feel like you have a bit of understanding of how the game works, you can find a group in #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community (also check out #find-a-game for info aon how to use our LFG channels)
