I’m looking for someone to help me come up with a back story for my character
Check out #character-discussion maybe
Ok thank you :))
Also I'm broke and I only have free rules
ive got like 2 copies of the players handbook for 5e and thats about it myself
i have a few smaller ttrpgs/etc that I got with a bundle a while back and im reading through one of them atm since it seems pretty interesting
just opened up one of them and the gm section the first thing it says is "Your job is not to kill the characters" 10/10
The free rules are enough to get you started. Getting the basics down sets the foundation for more fun with the expanded options in paid content.
Oh yes I mean I would like the player handbook but I still do want to play
Thankfully some games the dm will share the resources
hello I would like to find in person games around me. what is the best way to find them? is there a specific place to go to? also I live on the northern end of Chicago if that helps. any advice is welcome.
Check your local gaming/hobby shop. Schools and libraries may have gaming clubs. Also check local Facebook D&D groups.
Curiosity. To the Dm's, what are some of your favorite ways to start a campaign? Im trying to avoid the "yOu In A tAvErN" start
How do i make a thread to start looking for a group here?
To be honest,I have nothing against starting in a tavern
But a fair amount of my games start in media res or with the party going to meet whoever hired them instead
I like tavern
Tavern my friend
But if not tavern
Then someone summoned them to meet them somewhere
How rare are hill giant strength potions in general campaigns? Is there a resource that tells me these types of things?
Their rarity is Uncommon, but how likely you are to find one is entirely dependent on the DM and the campaign
In generaly though, how likely are you to find one?
Throw something out there please.
I dont have any numbers to throw at you that would give any better context. I've ran and played about combined 20 different campaigns and one shots, and these potions have come up maybe once
It doesnt matter how rare an item is, if the DM doesn't decide to put them in
Best thing I can suggest is mentioning youd like the item to the DM, and a good DM is very likely to work with you on that
Hi
Hola
Im new to DND and im going to a friends campaign next weekend. how many experience points does it take to level up as a paladin?
Depends on what level. Check this table:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/creating-a-character#LevelAdvancement
Is the DM using Experience Points or Milestone method of leveling up?
he said hes making up the xp that come from enemies and leveling up pretty much whenever he wants
That's... different...
yeah i dont know im just trying to figure it out so i can fill my character sheet out
Yoo, how does one gain the DM role as a player?
sounds more like milestone levelling tbh
For I am becoming gm
there’s a “channels and roles” button at the top of the channel list loks like it’s under there
thank ye kindly!
Also, scuse me for a moment if you will, but do you know if other forms of ttrpgs like Hunter: The Reckoning are allowed here?
Cuz I'm running one and am gonna be looking for players here.
Just 1, tho.
This is a D&D specific server. The only place to talk about non D&D TTRPGs is in #non-dnd-topics
So dnd campaigns have little guidance as to loot available? This is mostly up to the DM? Then maybe I ask this a different way, are these elixers over powered? Can they trivialize combat?
Do magic missile need hit roll?
!totorial
Nope, it just automatically hits
Heya yall new player here, is there a specific channel for looking for a group to start playing dnd with?
yep, check out #find-a-game for info on how and where to post
Thanks man
Someone wanna explain two weapon fighting to me?
I think two daggers or two swords or chains or whatever is a cool way to fightm but any time I've seen it referenced to D&D it basically says just don't.
Are you using 2014 or 2024 rules? Because two-weapon fighting varies between the two
Pre-made campaigns tend to have set loot, though its pretty common for the DM to add their own. Some may also use random loot tables for determining rewards for certain things.
And generally I wouldn't consider potions and other consumables as over powered. Some might trivilialize an encounter or fight if they happen to be fitting for the situation, but generally they only last a limited amount of time, and most combat related potions dont just instakill things (for example the Hill Giant Strength potion you mentioned, all it does is change your strength score to 21 for 1 hour, so all it would do is make your melee attacks and maybe your grappling slightly better depending on your original score), so its usually fine for a potion to solve something for the party, since they are single use 😛
2024 i guess
Okay, so in 2024 there's no dedicated Two-Weapon Fighting rule anymore, and instead it's part of the Light property
When you take the Attack action on your turn and attack with a Light weapon, you can make one extra attack as a Bonus Action later on the same turn. That extra attack must be made with a different Light weapon, and you don’t add your ability modifier to the extra attack’s damage unless that modifier is negative. For example, you can attack with a Shortsword in one hand and a Dagger in the other using the Attack action and a Bonus Action, but you don’t add your Strength or Dexterity modifier to the damage roll of the Bonus Action unless that modifier is negative.
To simplify, if you're holding a Light weapon in one hand and another Light weapon in the other, when you attack with one of them you can then use your bonus action to attack with the other later in your turn
Okay so it's a sacrifice of the bonus action
Not a 'sacrifice', just one way to use it
Ahh okay

What exactly is broken homebrew? Everytime I look it up a whole different definition comes up
Hmm. Yeah. That definitely sounds like a thing where if you asked 10 people, you'd get 11 definitions.
If you're up for it, why do you ask? Because folks can answer an adjacent question to kind of get you where you need to go.
Just trying to figure what the limits are between homebrew and what makes it into broken homebrew yk so I don't go crazy with it
Generally speaking, if you're new, we don't advise making homebrew because it's hard to know where the line is when you don't know the rules
It's imbalanced (probably because it has not been thoroughly playtested and/or created by someone who doesn't know how to properly balance the homebrewed monster, spell, class, etc).
Broken homebrew in that context is generally just something that's too powerful
Ooohhh okay yeah that makes sense
Yeah like someone just creating a nuke lol
Gotcha.
D&D 5E came with some design philosophies that I think should be considered for most homebrew. For example, 5E tries to steer clear from "floating modifiers" (if that term makes sense). It also has the concept of "bounded AC".
In addition, you can roughly see damage, HP, etc. scale throughout the various levels. So for homebrew, I'd also take that into account.
And of course, there's the tried-and-true method of playtesting to see how something actually works "in the wild".
Especially a player who wants to homebrew their own class and make it OP because they want to play a very OP PC.
Yeah I have alot to learn then cause I don't know most of that lol
Don't think about homebrew right now. Just learn the rules of the game first.
Yeah honestly alot of the stuff I wanna make is just cosmetic like a machete replacing a shortsword eventually
Yeah I'm not I'm just learning what all of this means before I go jumping into and not understanding it
Flavour is free. You can describe a scimitar as a machete or a cutlass as long as you don't touch the gameplay mechanics, such as it doing 1d6 damage slashing damage.
(WotC reduced the number of weapons in 5E compared to previous editions for the sake of simplicity)
Don't jump in and try to absorb it all. Take your time.

Yeah I'm just doing oneshots with a friend for now
I'm using dnd beyond and that's the only issue for me is that the weapons are kinda limited but that.makes sense
Again, 5E limited the list of weapons but you can rename them in your character sheet.
Alright then thanks for the help I'll watch videos on all this
We do have a #homebrew channel. Standard caveat: if you're new, folks recommend not diving into homebrew until you know the game. Don't mod an engine until you know how it works!
To be fair, the two adventueres I have playing are exerianced and are patient and very helpful and are helping kind of guide me though everything. I also have my hubs learning along with me explaining things to me as I go. 🙂

saw this up above ! 🙂
We highly recommend AGAINST homebrewing if you're new to the game because you won't know what's broken or how to fix it.
Flavour is free. You can describe something you have as something else rather trying to reinvent the wheel.
A scimitar can be described as a cutlass or a machete, for example.
When you say you wont know whats broken or how do fix it, do you mean, story plot holes, or game mechanics?
Im not sure what Flavour is? a website, an app?
If you are new don’t homebrew game mechanics
No, I was not going to change the game mechanics at all.
Feel free to make your own fantasy world to adventure in
THIS is what I'm doing.
We have #dm-world-building
Flavor is a term, not an entity. It means the narrative description of something. Reflavoring, then, is to change the narrative description of something without changing the mechanics. It’s often used to get a certain character aesthetic without affecting game balance.
As OldMan said, a good example is wanting your character to wield a machete. Such an item doesn’t exist by the rules, but a very similar item, a shortsword, does. So you’d just get a shortsword mechanically and narratively call it a machete.
I asked my advertures to keep everything "Baulder's Gate 3 simple"
- Basic classes
- Basic races
- Basic weapons
I think that part will be ok 🙂
The only thing I'm really doing is world building a whole new world, but I am using monsters from the books, as far as how people interact and the mechanics, everything's going to stay as it is by the book.
I have a Human Paladin, and a Shadar-Kai Wizard. They wield basic weapons their classes are able to wield.
If your homebrewing a campang and know what your doing that’s great. But if your new hold off and run a few pre written so you get an idea how an adventure is ran.
Think I could still world build while I'm playing a pre-written campaign?
cuz I've been kinda working on this for like a week, I have 3 cities built- a starting city, one tied to the storyline plot, and the city we need to get to for the big quest.
You can use a prewritten adventure and plop into your own campaign setting. Tweak what you need to fit it in.
#dm-discussion and #dm-world-building may be better places for advice then here. This channel is to help new players learn the rules of the game.
ok thank you sorry ❤️
Be carful of railroading
But l unfortunately you have a foundation, homebrewing a campang can take years sometimes in say go for it but run 1 or 2’pre written, lost mines and sunless are good examples
Yeah I dont expect this to be a quick thing- thank you for the advice, also- What is Railroading?
If there is only one way forward and kne way back or your force peolle to do what YOU want it’s railroading
Oh ok, so expecting people to follow a linier path with no way to go backwards or no way to go any other direction in the story?
railroading is if the players dont really have agency in a story
Yes that's it on the nose. Basically, not giving your players the ability to move the story themselves.
Thank you very much ❤️
In reality, with the free rules options, it's whatever seems the most fun to play for that person.
However, at a mechanical level a new person might find barbarian or fighter to be a little more straight forward
^
ohhh okay, thank you!
Yeah bolth are straight melee barbarians can do more damage with rage and fighters get self healing and can hit allot more as well.(second wknd and action surge)
Hey everyone, new here and to DnD (tried running "Lost Mines," but friends didn’t vibe with it). My GF and I are joining a group with what seems to be an experienced DM for a homebrew campaign starting at lvl 3.
I’ve made my character with what I learned from reading the rules, the player handbook and from online, but also meshing all of before with my BG3 (400h, lol) experience (it’s DM-approved, so i didn't mess up anything). My GF, though, is completely new to DnD. What are some common noob mistakes we should avoid to improve our survival and keep things fun for the DM and party?
Learn the fundamental rules, especially your PC's class features and spells. It'll help your DM out a lot because they won't need to pause the game as often to teach you the rules of the game.
Obviously you're still new to the game so you're going to make mistakes. That's fine as long as you learn from them.
Done! We’ve studied our races, classes, and spells (up to 3rd-level spells since I’ll unlock those at the next level). I also have a clear plan for leveling my character. Rule-wise, I think we’re solid.
What I’m more worried about is being good team players. My GF has never played anything like this (tabletop or video games), and I’m used to controlling everything solo in BG3. Any tips for working better as part of a group?
You are not the main character. You're sharing the spotlight with the other players in the group.
Let other players talk, especially the more shy ones.
Best advice I can give is to listen to the other characters. Learn about them and get engaged in their stories. Ask questions and have fun RPing building relationships together.
D&D is a social and cooperative game. There's no "winning" in D&D.
Everyone should have fun, not just you — some selfish players will do anything just for their own PC to have fun at the detriment of the rest of players' fun. For example, they'll grab loot and not share or leave combat for the rest of the party to die (this has happened to games I've DMed).
Ye
Are there any games available

Correction: winning is rolling a nat 20 to do something so stupid that it now works
A Nat 20 doesn't automatically mean something succeeds, outside of attack rolls
Mhm. I mean smth that sounds so dumb and is, but realistically it works
Not “king, give me your kingdom.”
Probably not that a good idea misforming new players what's not RAW.
I would second everything folks have said:
- Engage with other characters' stories, not just your own. Don't tune out just because it's not your turn or because the spotlight isn't on you.
- By the same token, be careful to not hog the spotlight. Be mindful of how much air you take up.
- Don't use "It's what my character would do" to justify bad behavior that isn't fun for the table. The fun of the table (not any one player) is paramount, so that may mean compromising your own fun, at least a little, so that the whole game continues.
- When in combat, try not to take up too much time on your turn. In general, don't split the party because that makes more work for the DM (and can mean folks are just sitting there without being able to engage).
- Take the plot opportunities the DM presents you with. If your character wouldn't go on the adventure, make a motivation for them to do so or make a new character.
Gunna be running my first game as DM next week
That’s a bad way of thinking how it works.
First of all nat 20 doesn’t mean stupid things will work unless the gm says so, even if you get a nat 20 doesn’t mean the gm is using critical sucess/fail.
D&d and baldersgate 3are two different things
hey yalls im trying to get into dnd as a player but i have no idea where or how to start all i have done is make a background to my character. But i really dont know where or how to start i have only played Baldergate 3 and i know they are to different things. But i would like to at least give it a try.

Stupid doesn’t mean outlandish. I don’t mean “nat 20, dm make me king” I mean, “okay so you want…me to throw you? At that thing? Okay…oh a crit”
Dnd beyond has a good starter guide option for character creation
Hey folks. Ill be honest, I only played limited dnd a few years ago and im looking to get back into it. So... Yea ^^; i dunno what to do or say here, but im just pinging my signal out into the aether.
Do you have anything in mind you need help with? Like making a character, new rules, finding a campaign, etc.
Either way I use yes but, no but
I can make basic characters, i got no real knowledge of crazy sub races or classes, just normal "Tabaxi Monk, Warforged Barbarian" stuff. Im mostly aware of the basic rules, though im not familiar with a lot of the canon lore since my DM was largely homebrewing settings for us lol
I would like to join a campaign for maybe beginners, get my feet wet again, that kinda stuff.

The bot post above has some great resources for finding a game.
Well the bot beat me to it lol
Lol cool. Also the Kobolds are a nice touch
Best race
No debate. It’s pure peak fr
Kobold bard is the greatest high known to man. I’ll die on that hill
Agreed
Can you have a chest strapped to your back and also wear a backpack?
Agreed
That would be a "ask your DM" kind of question.
They may allow it depending on the game context or they might not.
Okay
I am a 7"10 bugbear with a 540 carrying capacity so it shouldn't be too hard of a sell
Again depends on your DM and the game context. Trying to fight enemies? I can see the DM ruling that you now have disadvantage on attack rolls and dexterity saves.
Walking normally for a mile or so on even ground? Might not be an issue at all.
Meepo approves
Only if Yusdrayl says so. just sayin.
Hey guys. My friends wanted to play dnd and I've been nominated to play, in a group who hasn't played before, neither has I. Help me please. They want to do it tmrw and I'm not sure what stuff does.
So they made you the DM without your consent and they want you to do it for tomorrow?
Not necessarily
It sounds like you need more time to prep
Well, tell your friends you won't be prepared for tomorrow because 1) it's late minute and 2) you have no idea what you're doing.
^
I said tomorrow was cool, apparently I'm dm, nobody else knows how and I have the most experience (never played, nor know much)
D&D isn't a game you do on a drop of a hat. I've been DMing for 40+ years and I can't get a game ready for the next day.
If you're good with doing it, that's totally possible. There is a very beginner friendly adventure that also includes the important rules you need to know: https://media.wizards.com/2023/downloads/dnd/Peril_in_Pinebrook_COMPLETE.pdf?icid_medium=ddb&icid_source=article-1625&icid_campaign=free-intro&icid_content=peril-in-pinebrook
Then tell your friends it'll have to be when you're ready.
I assumed can't just do it on a short notice, that's why I'm here
Have you read the rules yet?
@iron dawn If you know 0 about the game, expect the full first session being just creating the characters lol
The most I've known is there's die, characters, modifiers and schools...
You and your friends should familiarize with the rules first and foremost. They SHOULD NOT rely on you to teach them rules.
I've read a bit of dragons of stormwreck
You don't know my friends 😭😭
DMing can be fun but it has much more responsibility than being just a player.
Dude, they already forced it upon you. Don't roll over and let them make you do 110% of the work.
They can at least learn the rules of the game on their own time.
Let's not put words into peoples mouths.
If they whine why you can't teach them then you can 1) say "no" or 2) quit the game.
DMs are suppose to have fun as well.
If you check out the pdf I linked, you'll see the important concepts you need to know to play. There are more rules than this, but for a short notice game, it will do.
Honestly, I looked at a pre-made character sheet and got lost around the spells, and skills
I highly recommend you and your friends check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.

Most things I don't know what they are, like the difference between wisdom and intelligence, or what constitution does..
Hello
Got it.
That name is sick, green man
Ability Stats With Tomato
Strength is being able to crush a tomato.
Dexterity is being able to dodge a tomato.
Constitution is being able to eat a bad tomato.
Intelligence is knowing a tomato is a fruit.
Wisdom is knowing not to put a tomato in a fruit salad.
Charisma is being able to sell a tomato based fruit salad.
ROFL
Wisdom is street smarts, intelligence is memory and books
Thank you
Constitution is endurance (taking hits, eating bad food)
hp scales with constitution
@iron dawn
First I not trying to be rude learn to say NO!
You don’t know the rules they don’t know the rules, tell them to leave you be. If I could I would but you need to put the hammer down as a friend.
Dexterity is reflexes, Strenght is well... how hard you hit with swords, and charisma is how charming you are (or intimidating)
(or hot, lol)
What effects stealth?
Common misconception, that last one. Charisma isn't looks, it's the strength of your personality.
Dexterity
oh lol
Dex and not wearing heavy armor
And some classes/races have better stealth
You are definitely not ready for tomorrow. Push the date back until everyone (not just you) understand the basic rules.
We arnt trying to put you down but make sure you have fun, the way things are your not going to have a good time neither are your friends
You can definitely play it even if nobody really knows what they're doing. The main goal is to have fun.
You can always look up rules you missed later.
See I've got 2 wolves here, Deva and Oldman
that's me
I do agree with OldMan about the part where you shouldn't feel pressured into doing it, but I does sound like you want to do it.
You just need time to prepare.
Just something I found off the bat if somebody takes 1d6 + 2 damage they roll a die (6 sided) they take damage for what the die rolled plus 2?
I'm just trying to get a grip here
ye
The +2 is the modifier.
Alright. What determines if a attack hits?
D20
1d4, 1d6, 1d8, 1d10, 1d12 are all dices used for damage calculation
Again it’s in the free rules
1d20 is for most other stuff
So a PC/creature with a 14 Str has a +2 modifier to their attack rolls and damage with (most) melee weapons.
You roll a d20, add the modifier listed. If the roll you got plus the modifier is equal to or greater than the AC (armor class) of whatever you’re hitting, it hits. Otherwise, it misses
What does charm do?
Alright.
You make the target friendly to you if they fail their saving throw.
For attack it’s d20+mod +prof bonus
Mind explaining spells?
Say what?!?!
Yup
Thanks
Again, I recommend the Handbooker Helper tutorial videos. They explain it better.
You're kinda asking shotgun questions.
Every time you use a spell it consumes a spell slot for you stick to that rule, when you are more experienced use the component rules. Each spell consumes 1 spell slot unless it’s a cantrip which can be used at will.
Genuinely would take so long to type out, you kinda have to look up a guide/book or have someone explain it for like 15 minutes
I can't post a picture here. I have a pre-made character and there's saving throws, and skills. What in character creation determines these?
?tag new abilities
Your modifiers mostly
Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
The corresponding skill such as dexterity?
Again it’s kinda in the rules we can’t teach you everything here sadly
Let's go with point cost, let me learn that.
My friends are telling me DND 2014 rules are better than the updated 2024 rules, is this accurate?
Every skill scales off different modifier, like dexterity scales up sleight of hand and stealth, while athletics scales with strength. You add your stat modifier plus your proficiency bonus if you have proficiency in the skill, and that’s the modifier for the skill
Personally, which do you prefer?
Every single “this time is better than that times rules” is all preference
There's not a lot of difference between the two. Think of the 2024 rules as a "patch" to the 2014 rules.
How do I know if I'm proficient in said skill?
It depends on your class and background. Your class and background will tell you which skills you can be proficient in.
Honestly I’m learning 2014, but some 2024 rules are better..
Dragonborn and dark vision
If the black circle is filled in black, or if it’s blank/white. different points in character creation let you choose what skills you want proficiency in. You can later gain expertise in a skill you have proficiency in, which doubles your proficiency bonus
Rogue would be profiecnt in things like stealth? So how again does that determine the modifier in skills?

Alright thanks, I worded my initial question a bit poorly as I was just wondering which most people preferred thanks for sharing your thoughts
Black/filled in means you have proficiency, and black/filled in with another circle around it means expertise
Are you reading through the Free Rules right now? Take your time and read it thoroughly.
I'm trying to figure out what I'm doing...
Here watch this tutorial video series on the fundamentals of D&D:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hD-LWHhiseE&list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN&index=1
Let’s say I have a +5 in dexterity, and my proficiency bonus is +2. If I have proficiency in stealth, which scales off dexterity, it would be my dexterity bonus plus my proficiency bonus, so 7
You are confusing yourself by jumping from one thing to another.
Gain, slow down please: the rules are your friend here they explain allot of things it’s daunting right now just say no to running a game.
Ranger got done so dirty
I play paladin so
Bars and barbarian got buffed too
Well typically I learn by figuring out one thing then going onto the next.. I assume that's not good here?
It has a lot of good changes
It’s a massive, complicated game. That method will not help you at all
For instance, proficiency doesn’t relate to spells at all. Most rules don’t relate
Learn one at a time
Sadly not really as again we can’t teach you the basics. Which is what you’re doing. Your best bet is to find a gm willing to gm a game. #find-a-game
Ong.
In due time
it's okay to ask clarifying questions, but generally reading a section at a time is helpful to the learning as it will explain as you go
Ye
@iron dawn just read section by section. Move on if you understand a section, if not, ask a question here. 👍
Alrightie
Speaking is the critical sucess/failure a raw thing or a homebrewed item
If you're referring to skill checks then it's homebrew.
Fiqured lol
I saw something else. On this pre-made character sheet there's a number under then what I think us the modifier, +2 . What's the number below do?
That's most likely the modifier for the ability score, or it could be the proficiency bonus
Dm me a pic of it and I’ll see
Cuz that sounds so vague
that is your ability modifier - you take that number and your proficiency score for d20 tests in things you are proficient in. Like an attack https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/playing-the-game#AbilityModifiers
Does anyone know where i can start off a D&D campaign as a new player?
First step is to get a decent idea of the game rules, focussing on how to create a character and understand the character sheet, and then how to do D20 tests (dice rolls + modifiers and bonuses) and damage rolls.

How do you know if a character/race is profiecnt with a certain weapon
Weapon proficiencies are usually tied to your class.
Yeah the class or background will tell you what you're proficient in.
Where could you find that?
Have you followed the character creation rules?
Alright so I was looking into spellcasting and how you have spell slots. Let's say for a wizard they have x amount of slots. Do spells need to be prepared beforehand, like predetermined what they are before a battle?
I'm new-
Sure, but you should look through the rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
They answer a lot of your questions, especially with character building. Like if you’re a wizard, your weapon proficiencies are on the wizard page. https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/character-classes#Wizard
The spells they have in the sheet are the prepared spells. But they can only cause them so many times
If I use 1lv3 and have only 2 lv 3 spell slots it consumes it regardless
I didn't understand a thing you told me
How do I find a local group for newbie to learn?
Check your local game store, school game groups, or local Facebook D&D group.
Still need an answer to my previous question. I have a new one, what's the difference between your hitpoints and hit die and how do they work?
My answer might be wrong or out of date so get another to confirm but
Hit Points (HP)
Hit Points are a measure of how difficult it is to kill or destroy a creature or an object. Damage reduces Hit Points, and healing restores them. You can’t have more Hit Points than your Hit Point maximum, and you can’t have less than 0.
Your class and Constitution modifier determine your Hit Point maximum at level 1. Hit Point Dice, or Hit Dice for short, increase your Hit Point maximum when you gain a level. A creature can also spend Hit Dice during a Short Rest to regain Hit Points.
Some spells and other effects confer Temporary Hit Points, which are a buffer against losing actual Hit Points.
I believe hit dice determine your HP + Con bonus, so like.. if your hit dice is D8 and gas a Con bonus of +2, youd potentially roll an 8. 8+2 is 10. And do that each time you level up
Oh- yea that
Nvm the con bonus part i guess
No the con bonus applies each time you level up - you either roll the new hit dice earned and add your con modifier then add that to set your new max Hit Points
^ bingo
What... dumb this down for me?
So your class has a Hit Die - this helps determine your hit points
So a fighter has a D10 for their hit die.
At first level your hit points are calculated as the max hit die plus your constitution modifier
So a fighter's hit points at level 1 would be 10 + constitution modofoer
Where's the ten come from?
the 1d10 which is the hit die the fighter class has
As you level up, you add a new die to your hit die pool.
If it's a die couldn't it be below ten too?
So a level 2 fighter would have 2d10 hit dice.
The result of the d10 + con multiplier?
Yes. Roll a d10 and add th Con modifier.
To determine their level 2 hit points, the player running that fighter can roll the new 1d10 and add their constitution modifier and then add the toal to the previous hit points to determine their new hit points
Anybody mind explaining rounds of combat, where health is tracked, how oder of combat works, ect
Or the player can take the average (5) and add their constitution modifier and then add that to determine their hit points
When combat occurs, the Dungeon Master asks all the players to make an initiative roll. This is usually D20 + dexterity modifier. Those who roll higher go first in initiative.
The DM also rolls the initiative for monsters and then tracks all the initiatives to determine who goes when. On a creature/character's turn they can use their movement, action, and any bonus actions. After the creature/character's done doing all that they can do and all the attacks and damage have been determined, it moves to the next creature/chaarcter in the initiative order.
My local store said to come here to find a group- you guys told me to go to the local store- sigh…
Uh
Anyways
Hp= health the die is how much you add per level up
Hit die are mainly used to heal during short rests
Why would this global server have any idea on how to organize a group in your locale? I mean if you're in a big enough city you can post in the LFG channels to try and find a group local to you but Facebook and your library and local book/game stores would be better for finding something local to you.
Now back to combat. When a creature attacks, they roll a D20 and add any modofiers and bonuses to determine the attack roll. If the attack roll meets or beats the target's Armor Class, it is a hit. They then roll damage. This damage is then applied to the target's hit points (e.g. the target's hit points pool is reduced by that amount). A natural roll of 20 is an automatic hit and is called a critical hit. The damage dice for a critical hit are rolled twice and added together - thus critical hits can do some hefty damage!
I'm lost again
A natural roll of 1 on an attack roll is an automatic miss regardless of bonuses or modifiers.
If you hit how do you know how much damage you do?
No you roll damage dice based on the weapon or attack used.
Does the weapon have stats??
Yes the weapon says what it's damage dice is
It’s on the player handbook under weapons/gesr
It’s in the free rules
Where do I check for this?
I have tons of ideas as a DM, but idk how to connect all of them into a path, like I have plenty of ideas for main battles, but I dunno how to make the path between all of them so that it's an actual adventure in living world and not just a boss rush
Hey. I haven’t played DnD in over 10 years. Wondering if there is a guide here for character creation and beyond. Basically starting like a newbie.
Thanks
At what points is somebody/something at advantage or disadvantage
Flanking (if the DM allows that rule), certain spells and conditions, attacking someone with a ranged weapon out of their effective range, trying to do a ranged attack when an enemy is within 5 ft of you, honestly there's too many to name but mainly spells and conditions as well as some class features give you advantage or disadvantage, they'll always say if they do
Where will they say if they do...?
The descriptions of the spell and conditions will say if they do or not
Example
Guiding bolt. You hurl a bolt of light toward a creature within range. Make a ranged spell attack against the target. On a hit, it takes 4d6 Radiant damage, and the next attack roll made against it before the end of your next turn has Advantage.
Like I said, I'm new, I don't know spells, really even how they work, what spells there are, where to find them or what they do
I guess check dnd beyond?
That's the best place really, it'll tell you in the spells description and you can even see what conditions give you advantage
Spells like blindness for an example will inflict blindness on an enemy which will then give you advantage on an attack
Do you have any friends who play or who have played?
Nope.
Oh ok then I’d definitely suggest beyond or if you can I bet there are some great YouTube videos explain the game and more
@iron dawn
Starting to think I'm cooked, I gotta dm tmrw
Alright serious question, I was talking to my mates and one of them said they could be a wood elf rogue, how would that go?? I'm asking incase they use it while I try to dm tmrw and just get an insight
want to VC or anyone for us noobs?
i went theough my beninner box solo is all
but i have some books now just like to talk with like minded people
Babe, it's almost midnight for me. Would could totally be friends, get other noobies and maybe somebody who knows what they are doing for a campaign
sure
im actually deciding between pathfinder 2e or dnd 5e for a 1 shot
hello there, is there a way where my character can praise a skeleton dragon for some buffs? well actually I have zero knowledge on how to play this game but I was just wondering
also, how do you find a party around here that's willing to have patience with me ;-;
Same question here fr
be respectful. hand patience.
Have?
yeah why can I not see the #looking for channels I think I've gone blind
I don't see it either, so maybe there just isn't one
you can actually enable visibility in chanel's and roles, hope I helepd
Tbh, I've just been having fun making a character
it's above by the way
I see alrighty then
Hello.
Hey 👋
How is everyone doing?
Found it, thank you! 👍
Good, getting sleepy though. What about you?
Joined the group to hopefully find new players to maybe join a game I’m running.
What's it like?
Idk what that is-
So I kind of cheated cause half the work is already done for me. Lol. I took advantage of the craziness that is the forgotten realms multiverse and basically made a Fantasy version of our world set during 1987 during the tail end of the Cold War. So basically our world history, just with fantasy.
That sounds interesting, though none of the characters I've made fit that world
With that said, you can really never have too many characters lol
What is a westmarch?
West arch is a more open system where people can pick up and play with many DMs in the game
Um no, that’s. It things work lol. If you wanna worship a skeletal dragon fine but keep in mind it may not be allowed
Okay thank you, I appreciate it
Depends on the build. No races is better for a specific class
I’m looking to play DnD but my friends aren’t interested and I’m a shy person anyone have tips on how to join a game with strangers
I know. I had two players drop out for their own personal reasons so I’m looking to fill a couple of spots.
Some of us like to jokingly call it a murder sandwich, basically it’s when a monster has a player on each side, they roll at advantage taking the highest.
Another way is being in stealth and making a sneak attack.
(Dc:15)
Your kn the chat, while we can’t teach one on one and honestly part of me wishes I can help more but yeah… look good luck take your time have fun.
Newbie here, how do i start haha
Step one. Give up. I did that for a solid 45 minutes before I started to try and learn.

I fiqured D:
When would be a good time to post a looking for dm thread? I feel like mine was ignored so now I have to wait days to post again
I'm always here. I'm new and I feel I might want a dm who knows what they are doing and can help me learn the ropes. If there's an open spot I'd love to try and join..
You can ask for DMing advice in#dm-discussion. Also, there are D&D Youtubers, such as Matt Colville, The DM Lair, Dungeon Dudes, Dungeon Craft, Nerdarchy, Web DM, XP to Level 3, WASD20, Seth Skorkowsky, Esper the Bard, How to RPG, Zee Bashew, Don't Stop Thinking, Icarus Games, Runehammer, Zipperon Disney, and MonarchsFactory, who give advice on DMing and playing.
I know right, I'm looking for a DM as well
Thank you but I'm looking for a DM
It takes time also look for lfg on Reddit
Thanks, I didn't think about that
Check #looking-for-dm
You can watch actual plays on Youtube or Twitch to see how DMs do it.
Honestly, not sure if I wanna dm. I'm just doing it for my friends..
Thanks but I already posted and need to wait. I only got like 1 response
Have you ever watched an actual game of D&D before?
Not in full
Well, perhaps you and your friends can look for a DM instead of you DMing?
It's a lot of pressure on you to do it.
They don't know people. It's basically just like the 4-5 of us..

Hiya everyone, is there any one in Lincolnshire out there?
Part of it is that they want to you to actually read the post. Look for the heading "Submitting a Post", that explains it
Possibly but you'll likely have better luck using Facebook, checking with local game stores and book stores, and even checking with local libraries then trying to use this global server to try and find local games.
hey wasn't there a thing for community games with a west marches style thing? i can't find it
#looking-for-community has lots of D&D servers and some of them run westmarches

ooh ty ^^
Just a reminder to not do any LFG soliciting/organizing here in the discussion channels as it is off-topic and against server rules.
Take it to private messages or use the #find-a-game to post in the correct LFG channel.
mind if i DM u?
no problem!
and sorry, my fault 😅
No worries! And good luck finding a fun D&D group/game to join!
Because buffs arnt a thing in d&d you can get inspired or bardic, or bless from another player but typically creatures don’t do that. Unless you’re playing a warlock of the undead and wanna saying your patron is a undead dragon maybe. But most gms will say no
oh im doing that, thanks
oh, but yeah im already talking to my dm
Gl
Yes
Any class can use any weapon, but some only are proficient with certain ones.
Fighters are proficient with everything.
Is there a way i can look for one shots?
My friends want to play but we don't have a dungeon master.
and i have the most knowledge of the game so they put me in charge of dming
ive never played before

Hello guys
DMsguild has a lot of one shot adventures. Some of which are free or pay what you want. There are also some adventures you can get on d&d beyond too.
Hi there ! how are we today?
Quick ques; can you get into D&D being a solo (atm) or is it just like a tabletop game with friends?
It’s designed for play with others. Folks have made workarounds for solo play, however.
D&D is meant to be played with one Dungeon Master (DM) and at least one player but ideally three to five players.
Ah, well I guess that is will not be for me anytime soon given that my job has a bad schedule but thanks anyways lad's 🙂

You might try looking for play by post games. They are text-based games so you don’t have quite the same complications of organizing schedules like a typical game/campaign.
To piggyback on Noob, westmarches games are more pick-up style (who’s available is who goes on the adventure), so that’s another option.
How do I look for a dm I'm new and I want to learn how to play I've read a little bit of the players handbook
Read #find-a-game for instructions on using the server’s Looking For channels.
Thanks
And post games and westmarches are online games if I understand it right?
Yep!
You could theoretically have a westmarches game in person, but it’d require more coordination than even a traditional game.
Wow thanks ! I'll look into it ❤️
Hello^^, i’m new to DnD! Well i do have bit of knowledge of it! I would say maybe the basics, like races and classes but thats it! And.. i was wondering! If anyone knew a way for me to find a DnD group online, that would welcome new players like me! Or if there is any channel for group looking in the server?💜
Welcome. Im in the same boat ^^; There should be a page at the bottom for sending out a request for a dm to scoop you up.
You can make a post advertising yourself in #looking-for-dm or browse open games in #looking-for-players or #looking-for-community. All the instructions can be found in #find-a-game

Well! I hope i can find something

Im sure you'll find a group thats accomodating 🙂
Just gotta take that first step and look around
Aight! I’ll try!!!
hello, im helping a freind make a character sheet, what are the skill proficntys for a hill dwarf
Your skill profiencies will come from your background and class, not species
Athletics and Intimidation
so plus 1?
You would tick the box and it adds your profiency bonus along with your ability adjustment
All good 🙂 Some races do get skills as well but I don't think hill dwarf is one. From Solider, you'll have proficiency in Athletics and Intimidation and then, depending on your class you can pick some more from the class skill list.
With each, you get to add your proficiency bonus along with your ability score adjustment. All other skills will just have the ability score adjustment.
One quick question, do you have a place where you recommend me starting?
Look through the various servers advertising in #looking-for-community - many have play by post games. And also just look for games that say "play by post" or "text-based".

Yeah

Hi! New to server, somewhat new to DND. Currently writing a one-shot for monthly in-person meet, but would like to get into online DM-ing and playing. Roll20 is good I heard but is there anything else?
Foundry or Fantasy Grounds are probably the other biggest ones for VTTs. But there's also Owlbear Rodeo, or it is possible to just play over Discord/Skype/etc
thanks!

After getting back on my D&D Beyond app I craved some adventures. Then I thought to myself a few minutes ago; "I should join the D&D discord, cause almost every game has discord".

Well you probably came to the right place. I just joined so idk how everything is
We got this trust
its hard to find a good dm
finally found one and i think the dude died
got nitro but hasnt been on disc for months
generally we recommend people play in a larger group
Do you know how I can find a group?
The game isn’t designed to be ran solo. Some fans have made conversions to allow it to be played alone which you might find useful asking for in #third-party or #homebrew . As an alternative, the video game Baldur’s Gate 3 is the closest match to single player D&D (with a few important rule changes).
As for finding a group to play with I would read the instructions in #find-a-game to use this server to find a game

a server with this many people would get flooded way too fast
If this is my first time making a character, should I start with something simple or use a pre-built one?
oh shit didnt mean to tag you
Simple or prebuilt would work. Whichever you feel most comfy with

Hey there, welcome to the hobby. The bot post above has some links to the free basic rules which is a great place to start. You're also welcome to ask any questions you may have about the game here.
the only stuff i know about the game is that you get to make your own character and certain actions happen based off of how you rolled on the dice. and also on what you decided to do
"dungeons and dragons is like a board game, without the board and you play using your imagination" - Jaiden Animations
That's a great high level description. Basically yes, a Dungeon Master runs a game for their players who make characters that participate in the story. Those characters react and interact in the world while the DM runs the world. You use dice to help decide the results of your actions. For example, you want to swing your sword to attack, you roll a dice to see if you hit and another dice to determine the damage.
The Jaiden Animation video is a really great introduction
eeee. so how are a couple of ways ill be able to get into a game and be a newbie?
There are a lot of new player friendly games, the only issue is that there are a lot more players than DMs so finding a game can take some time. There are people advertising their games on this server that you can check out in #looking-for-players . you can also find community servers in #looking-for-community. Another option are paid games which are advertised in #paid-looking-for-game
alr ill try looking!
Happy searching! 🙂
If you’re interested I’m hosting a campaign?
To organize a game you should use #find-a-game !
fyi im available on weekendas
weekdays im not available on
so if its gonna be on saturday sunday id love to join
I’ll dm ya!
like direct message or dunegon master?
since dm also stands for dungeon master. (sorry if that was stupid question)
Direct message, and no it’s completely fine😭
Just a heads up that this channel isn't meant for organizing games
Is Dragonborn a homebrew or a normal race
Its offical base race in 2014 and 2024
ye Im playing a chromatic haritage dragonborn
(he not evil he rejects the notal all chromatic dragons are evil)
idk what that means but ok
Idk I’ve never played a actual game of dnd
But I think it’s fun
Have you read the Free Rules yet?
Where would you go to find games to join that maybe are outside of Discord, the lf players channel are kind of dead... I enjoy pbp one on ones
like in-person games? facebook groups maybe
No, probably more online
i'd join some discord groups of some other things you like, and then maybe ask some people there? my games came from a gaming community i was in after a bit
i find its easier to find discord friends, then play dnd with them than the other way around
Okay, thanks
as i choose languages for my rogue role, can i already speak common in addition to thieves can't or should i pick common because my character wouldn't know it unless if i picked it?
im referring to the character creator btw
everyone speaks common unless you specifically want a character that cant use general communication. i'm pretty sure every race says common + laguages of your choosing unless you;re playing a weird one
Hey guys, I'm fairly new. Thought I'd stop by and say hello
hi
I'm thinking of making a paladin warlock, I kinda know what I was aiming for but now after watching a YouTube video I'm thinking about changing it up. Any advice for multiclassing these two. I'm focusing on dmg over healing
i just played a 4 year palalock
are you focusing on the melee or spellcasting side
i played a oath of vengance/hexblade warlock. took 2 levels of fighter at the end for action surge
I'm thinking melee, get in close with armor and go to town
lets move this to #character-discussion but we can chat about it
That's what I'm thinking I'm just stuck on the warlock subclass choice
So, random question. Maybe not random. My DM explained to me tonight when I failed a spell cast that was a minute long (I didn’t know until he forced me to commit to the cast) because I got knocked unconscious, that in combat, each round is about 6 seconds. So I’m sitting here thinking about it. 10 rounds for a minute. We haven’t had a combat that lasted more than, like, 7 turns yet it took an hour or sometimes two. Does anyone else think that’s nonsensical when characters and foes sometimes speak lines that last longer than 6 seconds for their turn alone? Also does this mean all these 4 hour long combats on some of the actual play podcasts are actually just a 3 minute long combat? Kind of takes the epicness of the fights away
Yes, one round of combat is second seconds but could take 10 minutes real time based on the number of players and how long each player takes on their turn. I've had a battle that lasted 2.5 sessions (each session two hours long).
Remember that most fights are against a "boss" monster but rather average foes.
Also, 5E made it that the PCs would hit more often since monsters' AC are capped (players don't find it as fun if they constantly miss). This means that most fights last between two and four rounds on average.
It’s just kinda crazy to me that some of the biggest fights in the podcasts I’ve listened to last less than a minute sometimes
Do extra attacks stack
||thordak on critical role c1 died in 30 seconds if the rules are as stands||
That’s insane for how much buildup there was to that fight
No. If you have Extra Attack from two different classes they don't stack.
What about warlock thirsting blade invocation
What about it? Extra Attack doesn't stack.
2014:
If you gain the Extra Attack class feature from more than one class, the features don’t add together. You can’t make more than two attacks with this feature unless it says you do (as the fighter’s version of Extra Attack does). Similarly, the warlock’s eldritch invocation Thirsting Blade doesn’t give you additional attacks if you also have Extra Attack.
2024:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/creating-a-character#ExtraAttack
If you gain the Extra Attack feature from more than one class, the features don’t stack. You can’t make more than two attacks with this feature unless you have a feature that says you can (such as the Fighter’s Two Extra Attacks feature).
Similarly, the Warlock’s Thirsting Blade invocation, which grants you the Extra Attack feature with your pact weapon, doesn’t give you additional attacks if you also have Extra Attack.
When writing a backstory for a character how long do you typically write for? I just found myself lost in writing for 30 minutes discussing origins, goals and character building. Even to writing segments of my character and others using dialouge almost like Im DM/Rping them in the moment. Would standard bullet points work that give short notes? Should I make a TLDR or quick summary of it? Im sitting looking at a few pages of work and wondering what realistically a DM would want
Is this for a level 1 character? Remember that your character is just starting their adventuring career. Don't make your backstory more interesting than what your character may do.
Also, your DM may not want to read a novella. Remember the DM has to read the other players' backstories as well.
Point form is great to help define who your character is, what their goals, ideals, and flaws are.
This is true, its just a story based on where it started and where they go. I go into detail about their trip and how they interact with the crowd around them and what they see and feel. I feel im being too specific or wordy and am thinking about summarizing it
Work with your DM because your character may not fit in their campaign setting.
I will when I get one! Just making a character for fun/future use if I get back into it! Thanks

I understand. Thank you very much for your answer
Where can I get some cheap dice
Temu
I am looking for an dnd character tool wich allows me to make a rogue with subclass
i have made a rogue in dnd beyond, but can only choose for thief ??
@zinc veldt only the free/basic rules subclasses are available for well, for free. Anything in the paid books would have to be purchased to be used on D&D Beyond or be in a campaign where the DM has content sharing enabled.
Alternatively, if you own the physical books you can homebrew subclass things, but it's a bit more tedious
ok thanks! got the book. i will look into the homebrew option
can y'all help me find my code On my essentials kit.
Essential kits after a certain date stopped coming with codes

hopw long do combat encounters usually last in game time?
In real player game time? Really depends but based on my experience anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour.
Most fights last about two to four rounds.
i thought rounds are are like less than a minute?
One round is 6 seconds long.
so how could a fight last 30 minutes?!?!
That's real time.
No like I thought you were asking as a player
2-4 rounds so... 30 seconds roughly
Rarely fights lasts 10 rounds (1 minute).
Very interesting
So strenght giant potions that last an hour are good for ALOT of fighting?
or is there typically hours between encounters?
It depends how spaces apart the enemy encounters are.
Remember that players control the pacing, unless the DM forces combat encounter one after another.
Lets say ur in a dungeon, just walked in, how long would it take to complete say 8 encounters? If you were intent on fighting through to achieve some goal.
There's no one answer to that question
As long as the party has resources (hit points, spell slots, healing potions, etc)
It depends how big the dungeon is, whether you choose to rest, how big the encounters are, if you spend time on other things etc
There's no concrete answer since every party, every dungeon, and every fight is different.
there are 8, we arent resting, an average sized dungeon with average encounters
just a ball park is all im looking for
¯_(ツ)_/¯
Average doesn't mean anything in this context
There is no universal "average encounter"
In game time, probably no more than a minute per encounter just because it's rare for any fight to go longer than that (and it still does happen)
But there's no guarantee they'll all be chained together
Dice also plays a role (no pun intended). So the chaos of randomness is a factor we can't predict.
ok, would a giant strength potion ever last 8 encounters in a dungeon generally speaking?
aight thanks for the insight
Again, the players control the pacing. If the party decides to do a long rest in the middle of the dungeon then that eats up 8 hours.

Hiiii
Hi! I'm new! Always wanted to play d&d, but I don't have the friends to play.
Looking for a group, but I don't have money or experience in the game 😦
#find-a-game is where you wanna go, although you should probably check out #learn-to-play first
Thanks for the tip! I read about the rules, and even tried to create a character sheet alone. The closer I got to play was with BG3.
Understand that just need people to play with myself
Check #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community to find a group/game to join. Direct message the poster or leave a message in the thread attached to their game post to indicate interest.
Also see #find-a-game for useful info - as well as instructions on how to use our LFG channels.
i dont know if the decision i made was very ambitious or very stupid
after playing a few games of dnd with my friend group, i decided to dm myself
and surprisingly, it wasnt that bad
Being a DM is just another way to play and enjoy D&D
And it's more intimidating from the outside!
i just have like a ton of pages open of the player handbook (im playing digitally because or friend group isnt very close together)
player handbook for the spells and races and classes
Yeah: when I DM, I have so many tabs open.
so far one of my flaws is underestimating how powerful my players are
my next encounters should account for that because well, learning from experience
Hey guys
I am interested in dnd and like extremely new
So what do I need and where do I get those
all that is required is friends, pen and paper or access to the internet
Well I am missing a pretty important thing
Friends
well this server doesnt have lfg channels for nothing
theres #looking-for-dm when youre looking for the dm
#looking-for-players if youre a dm in need of players
or just #looking-for-community
Ok got it
Welcome!

hi Lotus!
hello
Hey, I want to ask: Where are tools and guidelines for online DnD games? If so I want to ask other newcomers here if we could be Discord contacts.
we do ask that group formation exclusively takes place in our looking-for channels
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
I wouldn't mind running some one shots for newcomers.
I recommend posting an ad in #looking-for-players
Or even searching through #looking-for-dm and inviting folks to play D&D with you.
Read #find-a-game as you need to use the bot comamnds to create a post.
Also don't ever ask for personally identifying information
ah! ok ❤️ I saw that in the rules.
what is a homebrew?
I’m a newbie here as well but i assume it means homemade, original, smth made up by the DM
?homebrew
The term homebrew can refer to a few things, but mostly means "unofficial rules," or rules that you won't find in an official D&D publication.
Homebrewing can be a Dungeon Master creating their own monster from scratch, writing their own adventure, or deciding to permit changes to existing rules to better fit their table or players' needs.
It's important to note that homebrew rules are only acceptable at non-organized tables, and homebrew rules cannot be used at Adventurers League tables. Always check with your DM on what homebrew is (or isn't) permitted at your table.
Yep! Homebrew is unofficial, community-made content that folks add to their D&D games.
I posted an ad. we'll see if I get any bites.
i just posted my ad im nervous lmao
I'm going to sleep on mine and hope people respond.
Gl mate same here
Roll-20 is the more popular one, there is also another I forgot the name of. But mainly you buy your stuff and boom it’s all there easy to access.
Got it in one
Hello everyone, I'm new to D&D and I have zero knowledge and no idea where's a good place to start learning.
Hello everyone. I am not sure if I am in the right place or not but maybe someone could help me out and or point me to the right place.
My son who is autistic wants me to DM a campaign but I am totally new to D&D. I have the starter set Lost Mines of Phandelever and the 2024 players handbook. After all the reading I have an idea but I'm still pretty lost so I figured the best way to learn is to be a player myself.
We live in a small rural town.
I would like to find a group that is friendly for new people where I can build a character and get my feet wet in a campaign.
So if anyone has any ideas where I can get started I would be very grateful.
@scenic perch If you would let me, I could join your group as a player. However, I literally just started.
@scenic perch Id be glad to join your group as a player ive played a few games before so im sure I could give you atleast a rough understanding of the game. I dont think im experienced enough to dm well yet but i have tried dming some small one-shots before.
I should have made myself more clearer. He wants me to DM for him and his friends at home. But since we live in a rural area I need to find a group online that will get my feet wet to the D&D world so that I can run a campaign at home.
That was understood.
a lot of GMs (even me) like helping newcomers.
do you want to just get yourself blooded or play a one-shot with you and your son?
sounds like the former.
This ain’t the place for making groups
Nobody's doing that.
Right now you shouldn’t use the 2024 phb for lost mines since it’s not updated and it’s not balanced for the game. I own the module as well.
It would just be me playing online. The campaign he wants me to run with his friends is not a one shot.
Nay itll take 3/4 months of sessions to get to the end of lost mines if you do everything
I would like to be pointed in the right direction where I can get my feet wet in a D&D campaign so I can get a good understanding so we can have fun at home.
#looking-for-players or #looking-for-dm roll20 as well
I don't see either one of the groups. So I will look at roll20. Thank you
You need to put that in your role so you can
Err one sec
It’s near the top that says secret and roles
Oi, wait a minute. Isn't there a whole board with pathways and landmarks and decks of cards and such?
Not necessarily. Lot of DMs do use maps and such, yes. But as mentioned all you really need are some way to track your characters stats and abilities (character sheet) and dice!
D&D isn’t a board game. You can play with maps such as a world map or battle map for smaller areas. Some official adventures include those with them.
Also make sure to check the pinned messages and #learn-to-play for a link to the free rules if you haven’t already
u can just click em
the highlighted blurple hashtag
I have. I'm learning things like dice rolls and Dungeon Master obligations and such, but didn't see anything expressly saying, "We don't use maps here. We write out a series of encounters in a fixed sequence and you role-play them in order."
Ahh thank you very much.
I'm an overly literal sunuvagun. I need things said more expressly than smart people do, in order to understand.
Of course!! Good luck learning the game!
So only now, with @edgy onyx and yourself, @wheat crystal, telling me such, do I know now that maps aren't DnD's default.
what can be homebrewed and what is fixed (at least, its decided to dice roll)
Everything in the rules is fixed. Modifying anything outside of the rules, adding new rules, or ignoring them is homebrew
Careful of railroading your players
then why ive been stuck in creating character for almost 3 hours 😭
yes, the rest of the dm and player are clueless
Amen. I felt myself sink a little learning maps aren't the default. I guess deep down in my heart I was hoping for Elder Scrolls: Screen-optional edition.
There isn’t really a default. A lot of the game will be harder without maps but not impossible. The game is designed to be used with maps, as official adventures do include them. It’s just they’re not strictly required.
If you find a program you’re prone to becoming addicted to map making. Other wise theater kf the mind make sure you tell where each enemy is and so forth
You can totally do a theatre of the mind style game, but it will be harder to adjudicate things like combat due to the system assuming a grid layout
Ye
"theater of the mind"?
Perhaps you can ask more specific questions and we can answer them for you, and even point out the relevant section in the rules for a more concise answer
A style of D&D game played without maps
Basically the adventure happens entirely in your minds, thus the name
Your imagination.
is it going to be even harder to create character without background story
Do you mean your mechanical background, or your narrative backstory
character background
Every character must get a background as it provides important ability increases, skills, and items
The mechanical Background is where you get your skills, feats, and possibly languages.
Your backstory is the narrative of what your character did before they started their adventuring career.
you cant just made up features and trait, bond, flaws, etc, right
Features no. Traits/Bond/Flaws yes
Personally I like to write my character's backstory then pick the most appropriate background. You don't even have to pick up a pen or keyboard. Just put on some music and think about cool DnD stuff.
Of course everyone has their own process for character making. Sometimes that's not enough for me.
The prophet approach is what works best for me.
Remember, features are mechanical (i.e. the Fighter's Action Surge, the Elf's Trance, etc). Traits/Bonds/Flaws are narrative (i.e. being loyal, having living parents, etc)
When you change the gameplay mechanics then that becomes homebrew and we HIGHLY don't recommend you do that as a new player. You won't know what you broke or how to fix it.
It can be easy for a newbie to get confused when trying to explain the difference between backstory and background.
dont worry, we're still stuck in character creation 🪦
and we still havent wrote down features, other proficiencies, attacks, spell and tons more
only.. skills, the 6 thingy, basic info and speed
the rest are left untouched
If you've written down your speed you've chosen your species yes?
yea
Have you just written the species down on your sheet or have you written down everything else it gives you (except for speed)
yeah, basically the 6 things on top of character sheet
(class, species, etc etc)
for a second i thought you were talking about stats as the 6 things haha
my wording extremely bad sori, but yeah.. that too
but yeah your choice of species will come with what you need to write down in other sections, including any proficiencies, languages, or features you might get
its all in the rulebook?
im the dm (ironic), but I'll refer to my friend which he picked a wizard
ye, they rely on me to be the dm, but even I feel clueless
I missed this the first time around. Noteworthy.
Wizard is their class, I mean their species (i.e. Human, Elf, Orc, Aasimar, etc)
oh yea, im so dumb.. Hill Dwarf
Oh, yes, actually! I have a question. One that is about beyond the handbook.
I see there's that limited list of jobs/classes/etc.
Now, this is something I intend to do alone, anyway. But for when there are other people... in the extremely unlikely event I'm lucky enough to ever find any:
How frowned upon is it to make up a class outside of these paradigms?
I'll accept "it depends" as a good thing.
D&D is meant to be played with multiplayer players, usually three to five.
Solo play is doable but that's not feasible most of the time.
I should ask, are you using the 2014 or the 2024 ruleset? Only because Hill Dwarf went away in the 2024 PHB, but it's still playable.
If you're running 2014 then no problem, it'll be in your PHB on page 20. If you're running 2024 then here's the link to the Hill Dwarf traits:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/races#Dwarf
Additionally if you're running 2024 you'll have to convert some stuff about the Hill Dwarf but it's really simple. Just ignore any stat increases the race/subrace gives you (since those bonuses were moved to background in 2024).
Multiclassing is something we don't recommend new players to try.
I've been reading the Peril in something-something first-time adventure book. I've been liking the read so far. I think I can lone wolf it.
Multiclassing? Meaning, making a hodgepodge of two existing classes in one character? Sounds pretty cool, but that's not what I have in mind.
Your character has two or more classes.
how do i know which ver is it-
my friend here bought the essential kit, 2019🪦
Not frowned upon at all though some tables will choose to completely steer clear from that. Now is it frowned upon to do it as a newbie? Definitely not recommended. I've been playing DnD for a couple of years and the though of making a whole class terrifies me. Making up a balanced class from scratch is a challenge. Emphasis on the word "balanced".
Agree with OldMan. D&D is designed to be played with a DM and a party of 3-5. There are unofficial conversions out there to play solo, however. That being said reading the adventure is only going to give you the DM side of the story, which is why the game is meant to be played with multiple people. The players aren't supposed to have access to a lot of the DM information.
As for making your own class, that would be called homebrew. Of making up your own stuff, a class is the hardest thing to homebrew because making even a decent homebrew class requires a thorough knowledge of the game and the game's intended balance (among a few less important factors like theming). While it is not frowned upon per say, custom classes are also the hardest thing to get approved by a DM since it can easily be unbalanced. As such, it is not recommended for a new player.
You are likely playing 2014 then. In which case, here are the basic rules link to the 2014 version of 5e:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014
Many subclasses kinda steal ideas and features from other classes. For example, Eldritch Knight is pretty much a fighter who went to wizard school. Meanwhile the School of Dance subclass is a bard that is similar to monks in more ways than one.
Hi, been looking for a dnd group? as a player. can't find one on reddit or on any websites that arent free
We've got games listed here, to which you can check out the information on #find-a-game
Hey I'm a DM looking for players, feel free to DM me, not looking for payment, and was going to play via VC if you have the character sheets, (this is my second time DMing)

Thank you
"You’re probably better off hitting a Skeleton or Zombie with Chill Touch than slashing it with your sword. "
why?
Context matters here, but in this case presumably the character is a spellcaster, so spells are generally better for them than weapons, the spell here is ranged, and has an added effect on undead creatures (2014 rules)
its in here: https://www.wargamer.com/dnd/damage-types
Yeah it's probably referring to what I mentioned, but honestly whichever you're better at works best. If you're good with a sword you'll deal lot of damage, while if you know the spell you're gonna weaken undead creatures with it
nice
Hi, been mulling looking for groups, while i've seen a lot of side dnd stuff i've tried 1 one shot so far of the game itself.
Whats a good way to proceed?
on a side note while going through the looking for players, information feels very sparse, often not even containing timezones just "any time" or details on whether it would be a good fit in either experience or company.
is it perhaps better to submit looking for DM's or should i get more experience on my belt before i do that?
It wouldn't hurt to post in looking for DMs... I think a lot of people are sparse with information and I, as a GM, am not preferring those people. 😛
It's attention to detail that I'm looking for in a player.
It can be hard for a newcomer (or anyone) to find a game sometimes... but the cream always rises to the top. ❤️
In general the wider you cast your net the better your chance to find a game. Posting in #looking-for-dm will definitely help. Otherwise depending on the type of game you want to play try exploring other avenues to find a group such as school clubs, libraries, social media TTRPG groups (i.e. Facebook Groups, Reddit's r/lfg), other D&D servers, or general TTRPG communities.
thanks for the suggestions
dm application
where do i find other dnd servers or ttrpg communities? like do i just Google and hope or are there some good directions for that?
reddits lfg subreddit is nice.
also roll 20 and I assume D&D beyond's LFG pages are useful!
how hard is it to get into D&D? I am bombarded with cool sounding stories from my Instagram FYP and also I just started watching Critical Role Camp3 but I know very little about the game and how to actually play it
Depends on a lot. What you put in is what you get out. I'd start by #looking-for-dm and/or playing a one-shot or two... then once you understand the rules better start looking for a campaign.
The game is quite rules heavy which can be intimidating. But it is doable! I'd check out #learn-to-play which has a link to the Free Rules and read it step-by-step as you feel comfortable. I also recommend making a practice character as you go along, since that's what the bulk of the Free Rules deals with.
How closely does for example BG3 corelate? xd bcs I asked my friends for dnd and they all said we could do bg3 and I just don't know how good it is compared to the real deal
Baldur's gate is as good as it gets game-wise. probably the 2nd best D&D game to exist.
after the tabletop?
but there is no substitute for a good GM.
oh yeah that's probably true, I see how good Mercer is and how he can make the story feel alive even more than bg3
The best D&D game to exist was planescape torment -- the story was the best, and it had the best BBEG of any game I ever played.
YOUR story.
I run campaigns with a theme and story in mind, but weaving the player's backstories and the group chemistry and (for me) the sandboxy-ness of being able to do what you want and go where you like will be better than a PC game because a PC game generally has to be on rails to some degree.
I'm going to watch some critical role soon... but I never have. I didn't want it to influence my GM style. But I guess that wouldn't be a bad thing if he's that great a storyteller.
Keep in mind Matt Mercer is a professional entertainer playing with other professional entertainers. That style of game is unrealistic for the average table but that doesn't mean you can't have an adventure just as epic.
It's hard though because I'd always rather be playing than learning how to play better. I hone my craft "on the job" as a GM.
Yeah. That's another thing that keeps me away. I am sure there are writers for the show and people are professional entertainers...
As a GM I want good players, but also to bring out the best in my players. I am a good GM, but I wouldn't want people comparing me to critical role.
(even if I never saw it)
As for BG3, the game is 90% 5e rules. There are some important changes that were made in order to adapt 5e to a video game format.
Oh yeah I get that not all games are exactly like Matt Mercer and their games, that would mean this game has so many talented storytellers and even VAs than any filmmaking community
D&DBeyond (owned by WotC, D&D's parent company) has made a video actually about transitioning from BG3 to D&D if you started with the video game:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SsZfDl1tiUI
Oh nice! Because me and my friends want to start with BG3 but I would love to transition to playing real dnd ASAP
I need to play BG3 too. But again, I'd always prefer to run a game and try to blow people's minds.
BG3 will take a while... but when you are coming back (especially if you're bringing your friends) a group all looking for a game together is easier than looking for a game alone.
yeah that's what my plan is, idk about my friends yet but I guess time will tell
I plan to dm for the first time, I'm just stuck on whether I should run some small one shots for my players, or see if they'd like to commit to something easy like Lost Mines. Any advice for a very first time dm?
I have the Dungeon Masters Guide and Players handbook, looking to purchase essentials kit next. I just want to be fully educated before I try anything lol I'm paranoid I'll be bad
Running some one shots can be a great way to tip your toe into the game, so I do recommend that.
It'll also allow your players to get an impression of the game before they commit to a larger thing.
One shots are also much easier to manage from a DM standpoint. No need to go full ham right off the bat.
That's fair. Any you recommend I look into?
A fun and free one is "A Wild Sheep Chase", by Winghorn Press: https://winghornpress.com/adventures/a-wild-sheep-chase/
I'm also transitioning from bg3 to irl dnd. It's what pushed me to want to do this, so I'll have to watch that video above

there's a link for that from the above collection
What Fiablo said. Here on the server we have an lfg system that you can read up about in #find-a-game
But D&D is played in a lot of places, sometimes in game stores, in friend groups, families and also online.
is it common for campaigns to occur text-only (for online ofc)? cuz i think i'll fare much better with the rp-ing and all with that, cuz i kinda struggle to express properly when im speaking
Not super common but there are play-by-post games which are run nearly entirely through text
There is a fairly big community around play by post (usually shortened to PbP), yeah. If you search with this in mind, you should find quite a few.
ic, thanks
Some games also incorporate it into their on-going games by having text role playing alongside the liveplay
oh interesting
uhh how necessary is it to go through the free rules
I think it's necessary in order to understand how to create a character, the ability scores, the skills, and basics of combat.
those were mostly covered in the common terms part (and also the 'what to do on your turn' thing)
i think
oh i cant post images
also one more thing: if my character dies, what happens next? do i have to leave the campaign or
That's between you and the DM. Depending on how powerful the PCs are they may have a Raise Dead spell. If not, you probably have to roll up a new character.
ok ty

They don't need to buy the PHB or DMG if they're new to the game. The Free Rules are fine to start off with.
