Hey so, I don’t know if anyone will help but I’m not the sort to read off pages and learn that way and I like having someone with some knowledge to ask questions, is there anyone that would like to hope into a call at some point and help me, I struggle to find the energy to read and learn without out someone there to answer anything I might be unsure about, I understand if nobody wants to hop into a call with a stranger but I would just like talking through how to understand some of the basics of the game. Anyway if not don’t worry but if you would like to help please feel free to drop me a dm. Happy Gaming!!

I can certainly understand your situation, but unfortunately we have dozens of new members join this server every single day, so we just don't have the resources to do 1-on-1 lessons with everyone. But, that's what this channel is for. If you have any questions, ask them here, and helpful folk will rush to answer it for you.
reading at least a little bit of the rules will be inevitable, but if you learn better through audio/video instead of reading, you can try the Introductory Videos link in the bot post above. That will bring you to a youtube series called "Handbooker Helper" made by the cast of critical role. Its incredibly well made, and very helpful, but it was made before the 2024 rules update, so some of the information in it may be out of date. A really good way to learn would be to watch 1 episode of the series, then go to the Free Rules and try to find the rule they mentioned, and read it for yourself. Then move on to the next episode and repeat.
Got it, I understand what you’re saying thanks for the tips I appreciate the time and will hopefully talk again soon I’ll have a look and see what I can learn!
Hullo!
I am sorry I'm a new DnD player.
I am setting up a roll20 char rn!
my first character, it's very intimidating there is a lot on the page-
Have you gone through the Free Rules yet? I would highly recommend learning how to play before you make a character
no I struggle with understanding written rules I always end up needing it explained to me so I am waiting until a friend is available to teach me.
Perhaps you could start with YouTube videos then?

The “Introductory Videos” under the quick links section in this bot post takes you to an excellent YouTube series that can help you learn.
As I said in just a few messages above this one:

Would I be alright if I just watched the videos are the new rules equally essential?
I don’t really know how to answer that. The new rules are just different than the old ones, in certain ways. Like if for example, if you watch their video on how to play a Monk, they might mention that your Martial Arts Die starts at a d4, but in the new rules that was changed, so now you start at a d6. Little things like that will be different between the two versions of the rules, all over the place. So their videos will give you a general understanding of how the game works, and be a good base line for getting started, but the specific details they provide may or may not be accurate
You wouldn't be the first person to simply learn the rules at the table by playing.
Just do as much as you can to learn ahead of time, and nobody (with a measure of empathy) will hold it against you.
Hi everyone, I’m new to dnd. I was wondering what would be a good starting class for me
I made a human barbarian
Pick whatever class excites you.
And I don’t know if that would be the best idea. I just want some input
If that’s a barbarian, then have fun!
Oh ok
Thanks!
The Player's Handbook lists the classes by complexity... Least complex are Fighter and Rogue. Average complexity are Barbarian, Cleric, Paladin, Ranger and Wizard. High complexity are Bard, Druid, Monk, Sorcerer and Warlock.
?tag new complexity
Class Complexity
Below is a quick overview of which classes take the most effort to learn. Low complexity classes make for an easier starting point, while higher complexity classes offer more versatility. Any of these classes can be played by beginners, so pick whatever excites you!
You can use a bot command to pull up the table in chat
saves some typing... thanks
Which is easier, Dming or being a player?
Being a player generally takes less effort.
I am a new player seeking guidance.I have read the free rule thoroughly and created a wizard named Darwin. I have yet to begin a campaign with him
Anyone willing to comment
If you’d like feedback on the character, to discuss them, or develop ideas feel free to post them to #character-discussion
Otherwise if you’re looking for a group, check out #find-a-game !
I do both... I can just show up with my character and play... But DMing takes lots of prep work.
Alright
That being said... I do enjoy DMing. The prep is fun.
I’m a yuan ti tank paladin and I’m not sure what to pick for my resistance at lv8, I’m torn between dexterity and constitution. Normally I would pick con, but I already have war caster, any suggestions?
I am not sure what you mean by “pick for your resistance”
Resistance normally applies to damage types, not abilities.
Do you mean you’re taking the Resilient feat?
I'm new to dnd and I was wondering if there is any campaign I could join, I can't find any.
You’ll want to use the instructions and channels #find-a-game have for you.
I have but I can't find a campaign
If you look at the #looking-for-players channel, you'll see where DMs have posted information about the games they are or will be running. Look through those (there's a lot and there's more being posted literally constantly). Find one that sounds good, and respond that you're interested.
Ok
I'm new to the D&D stuff and I'm currently working on my very first campaign and I was wondering if anyone has tips for me I got most of my stuff done a bit of dialog, and character's and NPC's
I would suggest jumping into #dm-discussion . Plenty of seasoned DMs there who will have a wealth of advice!
thank you
hello just joined the discord
Hello 👋
Welcome!
Hello. I am a bit of an intermediate player in DnD. I have been playing DnD for about two years
Hello everyone. I've been wanting to play and for a while but I have MS and sometimes struggle cognitively. For me that means when my MS flares my mental processing can slow down anywhere from mildly to near full stop, though the latter doesn't happen too often. I read the rulebook but I only understood to a certain extent. I'm better with learning as I go.
Does anyone know if there's a way to join a group that won't have a problem if I'm struggling to speak or understand more on one day than the other? I can usually manage for the most part or warn ahead on a particularly bad day.
D&D is the type of game where you just play with a group of people because you’ve all agreed to play together. There’s no official pairing or queue to join or anything like that. Which means, what any given group is ok with will depend entirely on who you’re playing with. Your best bet would just be to talk to people and explain your situation, and see how they feel about it.
That being said, perhaps “Play By Post” style would better suit your needs? Play By Post (PBP) is the term for text based D&D, where people play the game by typing in a group chat rather than using voice or video. PBP games are typically asynchronous, which means that rather than sitting down to play at one specific time on a regular schedule, people just type in the chat whenever they are available, so the game can run continuously and work around people’s schedules. So, if you’re worried that your condition could make it challenging to play on a consistent schedule, PBP could be an alternative to consider
My group does a weekly session for 1 hour and 30 minutes
That’s quite short, by most standards, but I’m glad you all have something that works for you
Yeah we also play by the dm own combat method which was weird at first but we eventually adapted to
After further discussion my brother and i are gonna start our dnd campaign with paladin oath of devotion and a cleric but he doesnt know which subclass he should get, fyi were starting at level 6 and phb 2024
We thought since we have devotion paladin do we need a life domain? Or do we get light domain for more debuffs, or war domain for more damage output during combat
Also also were playing with about 60 combat to roleplay
Anyone got any tips on how to handle favouritism as a player? I don't want to just run up and cry about it, I mostly just want to assert myself in finding solutions even if they're constantly meant for others to solve.
Also. Can't go wrong with any cleric, really. With the new cure wounds buff, you'd even do well with grave domain to basically have a second lay on hands once you go down. Out of the 3 choices, I'd say light cause in terms of versatility and domain spells, it's some of the greats.
Huuuu
War domain falls off later on, at least in terms of its features. Light is always relevant, so is life.
Ok then il let him know cus i recall light doesnt have heavy armour proficiency
Dwarves entered the chat
Communication is the backbone of D&D. Taking the time to express your issues with the DM and working together to solve it will do you a lot better in the long run. For example, ask for more time in the spotlight if you feel its lacking, or as for more problems that the party as a whole is meant to solve over one person.
D&D doesn’t really have set roles like the classical MMO trio. You’d be fine with almost any Cleric due to their versatility. Light is a very well-rounded subclass as well, which would be my pick. Alternatives I’d recommend are Forge, Twilight, Order, and Peace.
I get that, but I have like 2 months tops left in the campaign because my job situation changes. I'd still love to enjoy myself somewhat, but it's hard to ask for major changes when I'm not even there to finish it with them.
Also, peace and twilight are really strong but I'd personally talk to my DM if you have a hard campaign ahead of you, otherwise those two domains might throw it out of balance single handedly.
Order is amazing if you have a rogue in your party.
i wanna get started playing what do i need to learn in order to do that as fast as possible
Check out #learn-to-play and this channels pins, both of which have links to the free basic rules as well as a few other useful resources
Mostly? Not much at all. At its core, you'd be best off, knowing what your character can do in terms of features and spells. Outside of that, a lot of it is imagination and asking "can I do X" and the DM will tell you yes or no.
ok thank you and if i wanted to play a game whats the best way to get one started(i know nothing)
That one who @wheat crystal just posted has a link on how to find games. Might have to find what works for you, perhaps join a beginner one shot first, see if you like it, before you commit to a campaign
There's plenty platforms out there that have lfg sections, including this discord.
That, and if you have trouble making characters, collaborate with your DM. They love helping in those regards, because they can hook your backstory up with the universe they play in, effectively making it easier to implement you in a story.
Hello I’m new here I have no idea how to play dnd but I’ve heard on Reddit that this is a good server for beginners could I get some help sorry for the interruption
I also barely know any roles I only know four and have a character that I have no idea what class or even if they are ok here

Hey there!
I’m just getting started with D&D and I actually recently purchased the Essentials Kit and the Handbooks.
I have been trying to research about the game also.
So I’m excited to get started but I’m really unsure and extremely nervous about where to start, I would like to try an online game for newcomers if possible.
Just looking for some direction and advice where I need to go.
Thanks in advance!
Welcome! #find-a-game can point you toward the available groups here.
#learn-to-play message has some general advice for that as well.
Thanks very much for the help!
Does anyone wanna make a campaign wirh me
?
Like play with me a game of dnd
Just a reminder that it is off-topic to try and solicit/organize games outside of the Looking For Game channels. Please read #find-a-game to learn how to use them.
Hello! I was curious, I'm playing DnD 5e at level 9, and i'm kind of newer to the system. Ive spent my past 2 years playing Pf2e. could someone help me real quick with realizing the difference in how hard it is to obtain +1 armor/weapon? Should I have that around level 9 already?
I have 750 gold to use, but couldnt find the price for the +1
Magic Items are granted only by the whims of the DM. So how rare or common they are depends entirely on who is DMing for you, and how they like to run the game.
The typical guideline is that you should have 1 uncommon magic item by around level 5, which could be a +1 Weapon.
But that's just a guideline, not a rule
Ahh, he did give me one uncommon item to get. I got the boots of elvenkind since Im wearing heavy armor as a cleric. I heard it helps!
maybe i shouldve gotten a +1 armor or shield instead
+1 armor is a rare tier magic item, not uncommon
+1 shields are uncommon though
ooohhh thats nice. I have 20 AC with my lvl 9 cleric cause im using a warhammer, shield and plate armor
Since the math of bonuses are squashed so much more in 5e than they are in Pathfinder, +3 is usually the highest you'll get ever. +1 is a good bonus, but some campaigns might not have you see even one.
oh wow! that is definately different
but that makes me feel better knowing its not a requirement in this game
and it wont get me killed for being without it
xD which is what im most worried about
From the Dungeon Master’s Guide:
ARE MAGIC ITEMS NECESSARY?
The D&D game assumes that magic items appear sporadically and that they are a boon unless an item bears a curse. Characters and monsters are built to face each other without the help of magic items, which means that having a magic item makes a character more powerful or versatile than a generic character of the same level. As DM, you never have to worry about awarding magic items just so the characters can keep up with the campaign’s threats. Magic items are truly prizes—desirable but not necessary.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/dmg-2024/treasure#AwardingMagicItems
Awe yay! what a stress free thing~
can clerics upcast spells like cast healing word with a higher spell slot?
Any spell that can be upcast will say so in the spell's description
They sure can. Spells will specify if they receive additional benefits from being upcast.
Technically any spell can be upcast regardless.
But you can still use a higher level spell slot to cast a spell that doesn't have any additional effects. It's not very efficient, but you could!
If the spell gives you any special benefit for doing so, then the spell will say.
True!
Have my first ever session coming up this week and I just wanna say I feel anxious but excited 😂
Congratulations! Hope you have fun with it
Thanks!
have a great time! Let the folks at the table know you're new and you'll find people willing to help you out.
Yeah we've got a good group of new people so we'll all be learning together 👍
That'll help. If everybody's new, then don't be afraid to agree to stop & look things up as needed provided it doesn't break the flow of what's going on. One solution otherwise can be to designate somebody as a note-taker on "we need to look up how <fill in the blank> works for next time," then make a ruling on the fly for how it works for now.
Thanks for the tip!
Which side of the screen are you going to be on?
I'm one of the players. Gonna try out a warlock
Then, next tips for players: Anybody who has spells to worry about, write out all the information about the spell onto an index card - the old-fashioned 3x5 lined sort. Copy it by hand, one card per spell. If you have to select prepared spells, pull those cards out to be able to shuffle through. It'll help out with learning what your spells do.
If the GM is ok with it, roll attack and damage dice at the same time.
Last, if the game continues, be sure everybody is on the same page about levels of "optimization" (for whatever you want to optimize for) expected. If you've got one person going for massive DPS and everybody else is optimizing for vibes, somebody is not going to be having fun.
I've wondered, is it possible to play dnd online? Ive wanted to play dnd since bg3 released but i dont know anyone in person
Sure. It's usually done with the help of a VTT (Virtual Tabletop). There are several of those, like Owlbear Rodeo, Roll20 and FoundryVTT.
Which one is best will depend on your personal preferences.
Apart from those, I've also seen people just play over a discord voice call with the DM sharing the map, for example.
Honestly whatevers free/ cheapest. Not exactly ghe most well off lmfao
Owlbear Rodeo is probably the easiest to get into, and it's freemium.
Yeah i just checked, it looks good tbf
Wait a tick. I thought I was joining the Wizards of the Coast Discord. Am I in the wrong place? I was wanting to talk to people about D&D miniatures from WotC. xD
When ive got more time after college ill try and find some group
I believe all 3 are usably free as a player.
You're in the DnD discord, which is indeed part of WotC.
Talking minis probably happens over in #dnd-minis
Cool cool! Thanks!
True enough, although Foundry can't be accessed unless you have a DM that is hosting the game, which assumes they paid for it. Roll20 and Owlbear Rodeo can be accessed anytime, since they have their own hosting.
That's potentially useful for me to know. (My wife and I are waitlisted for an AL game that looks like it'll be Foundry, but it'll be each of our first times using it if we get called up)
What the hell is this game
And how does it work
My friend plays it so I wanna surprise him
I know Jack crap about it

Sort of. That doesn't leave you with a complete character sheet, but it does reflect the assorted mechanics.
For a fair number of people, their first several characters might be based on/inspired by favorite characters from books/movies/TV
I like dragon ball?
I don't think you can fire a Kamehameha in DND or go Super Saiyan
Anime in general is out of my wheelhouse, but I'll bet there are folks in #character-discussion who could help guide you.
hey im completely new to dnd is there anything i should know and also is it posible to play dnd online or does it have to be in person
There are two bot posts above that are good places to start learning. Playing does not have to be in-person; plenty of groups play only virtually, usually using something called a Virtual TableTop, or VTT. Roll20, Owlbear Rodeo, and Foundry are probably the three most common of those.
ok thx
isnt oathbreaker supose to be in the 2024 version?
Nope. Oaths of Devotion, Glory, Vengeance, and... I'm blanking on the 4th.
Ancients.
2024 merely offers suggestions as to what to do when the oath is broken, the oathbreaker hasn't been reprinted (also not in the DMG).
sad thx btw
Thanks. Don't know why I wasn't remembering that one.
Hello, I’m new to dnd (but I know the basic stuff) and I was gonna need help getting into dnd
Hey if anyone has any time could ye message and help me learn about DnD ^-^
i would love to join in and learn along side you, if i may 😄
In general, there's so many new players that people here aren't able to teach individually like that
I'd recommend checking out the resources in #learn-to-play and then asking any specific questions that you have
This youtube video does a good job of informing new players of the basics https://youtu.be/hNNBjVmNbQI?si=nZJX7stJ-jGZUf1o you should also check out the free rules https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules and then ask any specific questions here. Once you're all up to speed, grab some irl friends and start playing (the best way to really learn it) or go to #find-a-game and read how to respond to postings in #looking-for-players for online games. @mild heart @slender osprey @frigid quest
Hey, so I've been interested in D&D for a very long time, but I never go around to really play it. Can I have some help, with like explaining what a homebrew is, what each dice means, how combat works, etc? I've played Baldur's Gate 3 but that's about all I know.
Is there by any chance a book, I could read to help learn?
The players handbook gives you the full rundown on how to build a character and how to play. It is full of info so a little daunting to start out but worth it. I would initially go to DNDbeyond and look at the free rules first. Homebrew is essentially what it sounds like it is homemade rules or information that the players or DM create that is not contained in any official source books that they want to add to their game. This can be classes, spells, items, monsters, or even house rules. Dice dont specifically mean anything they are just tools to play the game. If you have played BG3 then normal DND combat is very similar except that you can do more things using your imagination.
Ooo! Okay that's actually super helpful. I also have one more question, are races you can play as limited to the ones in the player handbook?
No there are plenty of others in all sorts of other sourcebooks and ones you can find online that are essentially homebrew
Certain books contain other species, but the DM determines which are allowed and which aren't.
Its all up to your DM what's allowed in their game
Oh alright! Thank you so much for the help!

I had a slightly frustrating day, I know for a fact that one of my dice for DND has gone missing... and I had my DND club today with students so I don't know if one of them picked it up or what happened
Any specific questions about D&D feel free to ask!
and session has been a drag to begin with because the kids don't focus
Oh dang I'm sorry to hear that lad, hope u find it
I think it's gone lol
Oh thanks I sure will!
What type of die was it?
A metal D4
Maybe someone picked it up
like I said I think a kid nicked it
which is frustrating because this was my metal dice set and I can't easily replace it
Yeah I've heard. Same thing happened to one of my friends.
because places won't sell like single die
Yeah ya want die? Too bad buy the whole dice set
Just starting this I must say making a character makes the Brain go numb if you're new.
its a lot at first i know but once you get all the pieces in place, it starts to make sense and eventually creating characters is a lot of fun.
Hopefully I'll get the hang of it
If you need a hand let me know.
I can help too 🙂
Alrighty then thank you both
Good evening! Just wanted to say hello and introduce myself, so to speak. I initially started learning on the first edition. Then I went to second, which was my favorite. Although I do love a lot of the races and classes in three. I never have really looked at the 5th edition. I've been dming. I've played. I love to play. One of my favorite rules was DM's prerogative. It made for some of the most interesting games. I have taken one campaign and made it into a trilogy, which I am still working on. Two other campaigns I have worked into the trilogy as well. However, I am very out of practice. I am also new to Discord itself. I may have a lot of questions.
That's what the channel is for!
haiii everyone! I'm new here but nice to meet y'all!
Welcome Tearlyn’ru. I am a lot like yourself. Started in what you would call the BX version I guess and played everything but 4 really. I loved the old versions but have really enjoyed the 2024 5E stuff so far. Beyond has been great too. For the first time ever recently I tried virtual too so now I am a Player in one virtual game, DMing another and then have a love in person when I can. All in 2024 5E. Enjoy exploring all the discords have to offer.
Hello ^^
Third, except the 3.X era is what I skipped.
Hey i am new here and new to dnd as well
New here! Looking to learn how to play !
Also very new and hoping to learn and play soon!!
Every adventurer needs to know the basic rules of this tome; Take it dearly part for part, if it is 5e for where you want to start https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014
Might want to read the 2024 version these days, to be honest
Is one better than the other or just more common? I honestly have just been debating on reading both but I don’t wanna confuse myself.
I read the 2024 and it is eh... ;recommend starting with the 2014 basic rules because it is the basis for both 5e PHB.
Alrighty thank you! I’m very excited to learn but didn’t have a clue where to start 🙂
I would actually recommend the 2024 version. All future content will be for 5e.24. The other commenter is mistaken, the 2024 Free Rules are the “basis” for the 2024 PHB, and likewise for the 2014 versions. Though it is more accurate to say instead that the Free Rules are derivatives of their respective PHBs instead of the other way around.
As a plus, if you ever needed to use 2014 content there’s built in guidelines to update it to 2024
I feel like 2014 basic rules is better jumping point because it allows for newer players to get used basic concepts of DnD while giving a jumping point for characters to previous versions (except 1AdE which is more battle and rule studded and 4E because ew) and other things like Pathfinder while still giving the opportunity to jump to 5.5E (aka 2024 edition). Also it has more opportunity to customize characters than the 2024 basics.
There is no 5.5e. 2024 is just the updated rules for 5th edition.
It's basically 5.5e like how 3.5e is just an updated rule set for 3rd edition.
Hey, so how do people get into groups? Or how can I find a group for new people?
The wider you cast your net the more likely you are to find a group. Within this server there's #find-a-game
Otherwise I recommend checking out local game stores, your local library, D&D social media groups (i.e. Facebook, r/lfg), asking your friends, etc.
Couldn't word it better than that.
Not really correct? Neither editions of 5e are closer to previous editions, and 2024 is probably easier to learn
And if you’re gonna exclude 1e you gotta exclude 2e too bc they were very similar
Also saying that 1e is more rules heavy than 5e is wild
The rules were less intuitive but the whole point of older games like that is that they focus on DM rulings
Good Morning (Afternoon or Evening) Everyone.
I'm new here, nice to meet you all.
So, since the past few years i got my interest in D&D and finally i motivated myself to learn about it and finally get some experience both on the Adventurer and on the DM side.
I played some RPG games what are close to D&D, for example BG3, Divinity and few more, so i'd like to create my own World and Characters, but both of these are pretty hard since i really didn't got any help with it for the first tries and my confidence can broke kinda easily if I can't ask anyone.
I'm pretty much interested Creating Characters, Worlds, even huge, deeply rooted stories because i have the Creativity but afraid to use it. (I'm kind of a Writer)
I wanna see worlds of others and experience how is it feels like to do stuff try out different Personas and get through Magical Journeys, so i hope can find my place here or somewhere.
Sorry for this long disastrous message of mine.
So if anyone has a good site or knowledge and willing to share your thoughts of how should i start my "D&D Career", i would really appreciate any kind of help, Thank you.
hi is there anywhere that you recommend i go as a beginner dm? i haven't run any campaigns yet and im wondering if theres any place thats good to start
For general DM advice, I can suggest Matt Colvilles youtube series on game mastering. It covers a wide range of topics that might be of interest.
A short Prewritten campaign should be the best starting point.
The lvl 1-3 adventure "Frozen Sick" should still be accessible for free on D&D Beyond iirc.
i have the mines of phandelver one
i'm planning to do that one but i need people to play it with
is there a good place to find a group of people and start a campaign for beginners?

ok, i'll go take a look at the find-a-game. thx!
does anyone know where I can play D&D online??
Some websites also have game org options, like roll20 and reddit.
ok thx
Oh, I called myself a thing, I'm not allowed to do that 😂
I'm new, and know nothing, but would like to be able to learn and play the game 😁
Its pretty confusing g with all the different versions, and the character creation process etc,
It's a little overwhelming
Both #learn-to-play and this channel’s pins have a bunch of useful resources for you, including a link to the Free Rules!
The character creation process will be covered in the Free Rules as well.
As for game versions, the most current and most popular edition right now is 5th edition (5e). The Free Rules, likewise, will pertain to 5e so you won’t have to learn a bunch of different versions of the game.
You may see people sling around terms like 2014, 2024, 5.5e, 5e.14, 5e.24, etc. All these terms refer to 5e content published before or after 2024, as this year is when 5e got a rules update (for reference, 2014 is when 5e originally came out).
Right right, so learn the rules, that will help make a character, and then there are basically two main versions of 5e? Pre or post 24?
So I make my character, which would pertain to both versions?
Then just use the pre or post 24 rule book? 🤔
Thankyou for taking the time to write a clear and kind response
I'm mobile only atm, but should get my laptop in the next week ish, so looking to try and learn so I can start looking for a group/game then 😁
They’re the same version, technically. But practically yes there will be tables that prefer “2014 only” or “2024 only” or a mixture of the two.
I recommend learning only one version, and of the two I recommend learning the 2024 ruleset. Not only will all future content assume a 2024 basis but there are also rules in place to accommodate most 2014 content should you want/need to use it.
Awesome sauce, thank you so much for the directions
Ima make a character that has a flaw they refuse to acknowledge or deal with, instead choosing to search for power 😂
The 2024 books do a lot better job of actually teaching how to play and how to fill out a character sheet as well.
yal i need help and somone to introdu ce me to the game please i need to teach my friends too
Is there a free resource for this book?
I tried using this and I'm overwhelmed 3 pages in 😂
Oh, I can't post SS here
am tryna learn too hhhh
Trying to use the dnd beyond character creation
Legacy, expanded rules and all sorts of settings 😂
its wayyy too much lmao
I'd start with free rules
Homebrew, expanded, 2014 core, and legacy are all options
Yeah the first tab of DDB’s character creator is a bit of a mess for a newbie, it’s definitely more intuitive/geared for a more experienced player.
Don't worry about the extra content to start
yall wanna go on a call and lear together?
Just un tick them all?
I would keep the first tab to defaults (unselected) and then skip to the next tab
Read through chapters 1 and 2 of the Free Rules, then look at trying to make a character.
The initial set of toggles are mainly for “select these if your campaign uses them.” For example, if your DM has homebrew (custom) content to share with you, you’d select the Homebrew toggle.
So I shouldnt try to make a character before i find a game 🤔
I would recommend building one since it’s very helpful for learning the game in my experience.
You can as practice
The free rules are a million tabs of info I have no idea how to organise in my head 😭😂
Once you get into a game, you'll usually create a new character based on what the group discussed. But it never hurts to practice.
And some groups might be ok with a character you already made.
At the very least building with just the Free Rules will produce the most widely acceptable characters for any given campaign
Hi I am new to DnD, nd sre loking for the party
If you wanna use this server to find a group there’s #find-a-game !

I'll watch a few things, and look for a game when I get my laptop, and hope for a veteran team to take pity on my hope fuelled adventure

There’s a video here that goes over the basics.
Once you’ve got a grasp on those, hopefully the rest will be easier.
I was just watching her character creation 🤣🤣 thankyou
Are Pride and Pride2 actual classes of D&D? No. I don't understand why those are listed when joining up. Can someone explain?
They're badges which you can display next to your name, similar to the class badges.
There’s a few others there that also aren’t classes.
Feel free to pick whatever you like.
You can change it at any time.
Take it a bit at a time. Ability scores, classes, species.
This has supplanted the DAW/John Bernthal one as my new favorite for rank beginners.
Though they're really more complementary - DAW demonstrates what it's like in practice; Ginny is hitting the underpinnings.
Ia m completely new to dnd how do I start???
How do session 0s work? I know its explaining the campaign, but do you write your character during session 0 or before? And what else does the DM explain?
I am so confused
A session 0 will, at a minimum, hit two different things:
- Making sure that everybody is in agreement on the tone and setting of the campaign. If I walk into a campaign expecting it's going to be a low-magic, exploration-focused game and the players want an Eberron-like setting (Steampunk meets magic), somebody is going to not have a good time.
- Establish lines (things that the game shouldn't touch at all) and veils (things that should be dealt with as "fade to black"), along with safety tools for alerting everybody on how to deal with unexpected surprises.
A session 0 can have the party creating their characters together, but it doesn't have to.
Welcome! There's a good video above that can help you get started, and more info in #learn-to-play.
(for a group that plans to play together on a regular basis, I'd encourage it)
But if you've got any specific questions, ask away!
Ultimately your DM would be the best person to ask whether this specific session 0 will include character creation.
What I'd generally recommend is coming up with a few loose ideas for characters you might enjoy.
Then once you've learned more about the campaign, you can work with your group to pick the best fit and add any finishing details.
Thanks!!
I just joined the server not too sure on how this works but im looking to join a game

im like completelly new to dnd so uhh how does it work normally?...
You're too young. 80s music reference.
Short version:
- Read the basic rules
- Find people to play with, 1 dungeon master to play the world, 3-6 players to play the main characters of the story you're gonna tell
- Sit down, either online, or in person
- Tell cool stories together with dice
The rules you can find linked above.
I would only amend the third bullet slightly:
SIt down, either online or in person, and agree as a group to the kind of stories you want to tell.
Underrated comment
If like me, you have issues with giant walls of text, watch the beginner videos linked above, and find a kind DM who will take a newbie,
They'll hell you make your character to fit in their world
Thats my experience today as a day 1 rank amateur 🤣🤣
The folks in #character-discussion (which sometimes includes me) are happy to help people figure out how to make the mechanics of the game help them realize their vision for the character.
Can you create custom items for characters to have that are purely for roleplay purposes?
Like they make no difference in combat or skill checks or whatever but enhance the roleplay
That's up to your DM. I not only allow it, I encourage it. Reskinning items for roleplay purposes is great.
Mmmmm nice
Agree with Eamon - the expression you'll hear a lot is "Flavor is free."
it means that, as long as the mechanical effect is the same, how you describe the thing your character does is up to you. Some examples that have come up at tables I've been at during the last year:
- My wife was playing a character based on Eve Dallas from JD Robb's "... in Death" books. Mechanically, what was being used to fight started as a club and a warhammer; in the description they were a baseball bat and a sledgehammer.
- In that same game, a friend was playing an artificer. Her castings of the firebolt spell were shooting a prototype laser pistol; the faerie fire was a glitter bomb.
- Most people who are familiar with fantasy tropes hear "bard" and think "musician." The character I was playing in the game(s) above is closer to a Viking war chanter. Thunderwave is literally him yelling so loudly it pushes people away from him.
@hot hollow DnD is a roleplaying game where the players tell a narrative together, using the rules and dice to support it
i'd recommend checking out a lot of the links in #learn-to-play if you wanna know more
I have a bard who uses tap shoes as his musical focus.
For the new College of Dance, that'd be just absolutely perfect.
He was a Swords Bard... so he double-wielded scimitars.
So you grab a foot to cast a spell?
Probably literally tap-dances or soft-shoes through. Somatic components don't strictly have to be hands.
I mean...
A Somatic component is a forceful gesticulation or an intricate set of gestures. A spellcaster must use at least one of their hands to perform these movements.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/spells#SomaticS
Forgot that was written into the rules and was thinking strict definition of the word.
So I’m very new to actual dnd and am looking at playing an artificer as my first character, is everything I need to be able to play it in Tasha’s or is there stuff in other books I need as well?
You'd also need the free basic rules to cover the rest of how the game works; species; background; equipment; etc.
Can someone explain me what's dnd
I don’t need to buy the phb right, or is that something recommended to get as well?
Not sure if the freely available stuff covers everything I’d need or not
You don't strictly need it. The free rules are enough to get you started. But the PHB includes more options to build characters with, like more subclasses, more feats and more species.
Gotcha, so not required but not a bad idea to get it
its a fantasy roleplaying game. a group of people play together, creating a story with their decisions and rolling dice. one player controls the world and is in charge of the rules (the Dungeon Master or DM), while the others control one character in the world each, going on adventure as a group
Exactly.
Buying them off dnd beyond then allows me to use them in that character creator I’m assuming?
Yeah
Awesome, thanks y’all
But be aware that you can only share it with others if someone with the master subscription enables content sharing in a campaign.
Just something to keep in mind.
Would that be something specifically the dm has to do or any player in the game?
Anyone with a master subscription can enable sharing in a campaign, but only in 5 campaigns total.
My last home group had stuff being shared by somebody who was technically one of the players. He's never shut it down, so I (for now) still have access to whatever he bougth.
Oh that sounds,cool
It totally is
I think the two best intros are the video from Ginny Di that I linked above and the one wherein Deborah Ann Woll was a guest with John Bernthal and drops him in. The second one has more of what it looks like in action, while Ginny breaks things down in a more organized fashion.
Ok

I just finished my second session last night, and it was absolutely epic! I can’t help but think how amazing it would have been to start playing sooner.
Thanks. I wasn't snagging that quickly.
Mostly because of juggling devices.
hello everyone i never played DnD but so interested i played with my friends and the hosts exams started so we only played for 30 minutes i wanna learn but idk should i watch to learn or play to learn cause idk if people would get mad if they played with someone who doesn't know how to play so i need ur opinion
If you tell a table that it's your first game, or that you haven't played often, you'll usually be able to find people who are happy to help teach.
Seconded, I primarily look for new players because I enjoy teaching
alright when u trying to find someone im free this 2 weeks
Please take any game soliciting/organizing to private message or use the proper looking for game channel
It's off-topic in the discussion channels
ok
should i join a campaign before making a character or make a character then join
it doesn't hurt to work on creating characters to get used to the process, but (outside of an Adventurers' League setting), don't be set-in-stone committed to one before you've found a group, because you want to be sure the character and the group will fit with each other.
whats the most common lvl people start on for campaigns???
You can have several concepts, but (for example) a plasmoid (sentient ooze) character isn't going to fit into a low magic setting that's trying to replicate The Dirty Dozen, but fantasy.
i heard its around 5 but i wanna make sure..
By default, assume level 1. If you're working with a group of more experienced players, 3 or 5 might also come up -- 3 because everybody picks their subclass then, and 5 as giving a few more options yet. But I'd still say to assume 1st level.
thanks im tryna set up my character rn so i need all the info i can get never done it before
Unless you're facing a deadline for needing it done, there's no time pressure, so take your time.

if i put gwm in feats do i have to put the information on gwm or not
thanks goat 🙏
I do two things with respect to Feats: Any immediately needed mechanical benefits get bundled in where it is used - for example, if I have a fighter with the Archery fighting style, I just build the +2 bonus to hit in with the attack summary. Then, under the Feats section, I'll mention Archery Fighting Style, +2 hit with ranged weapon attacks.
I don't recall offhand what 2024-flavor GWM does, but I'd h andle it similarly.
That's a matter of preference. If you know what gwm does, you can just write the name. If you don't, you might want more information
its kinda op ngl
On your turn, when you score a critical hit with a melee weapon or reduce a creature to 0 hit points with one, you can make one melee weapon attack as a bonus action.
Before you make a melee attack with a heavy weapon that you are proficient with, you can choose to take a -5 penalty to the attack roll. If the attack hits, you add +10 to the attack's damage.
That's the 2014 flavor.
true but i cant find any modern
Don't know if it's in the free rules or not.
new one basically just adds proficiency bonus to damage
in this file i cant find skills...
like where i would put skills in
i see features and special traits
Skills now appear under their default attributes.
cantrips and prepared spells
and where would that be-
When you hit a creature with a weapon that has the heavy property as part of the Attack action on your turn, you can cause the weapon to deal extra damage to the target. The extra damage equals your Proficiency Bonus.
that is 2024 GWM
its quite close to the old one tbh
but where would i put in my skills in the file
class features??
cuz im tryna get intimidation
guys..?
They don't go in the features section
where then
They go in the skills sections
... WHERE
Which should be over near the stats
im so lost
Do you see the word intimidation on the sheet?
im using this sheet
Intimidation is under the Charisma ability
but wehre
wehre on the sheet does one put it
The field which says Intimidation found under the Charisma ability section.
where
do
i place it on my sheet
Hit ctrl + f then type intimidation in the search field. Locate where it's being highlighted on the sheet.
If you're proficient in it, then yes you would fill in the circle. Then add the modifier over the underline.

ok but what about the line next to it
That's for your bonus. Your bonus will be your charisma modifier plus your proficiency bonus (if you're proficient)
?tag new abilities
Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
ohh ok
if im proficient in something what do i put next to it
like what would i put if i put mercenary veteran
Maybe go through the section in the free rules that explains abilities and how they generate your modifiers: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/playing-the-game#TheSixAbilities
Then take a look at the section that goes over how to create a character: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/creating-a-character
if you're proficient with a certain skill (persuasion, deception, acrobatics, etc.), you would add your proficiency bonus (+2 at level 1) to the ability score modifier for the ability that applies (Charisma for persuasion and deception, dexterity for acrobatics and so on) and the sum is what you put next to that skill. So if you're talking about Persuasion, and your Charisma modifer is a +3, you'll add the +2 Proficiency bonus to it and so beside Persuasion you'll write +5.
ty this actualy make sense

those that use the d100 dice what do you mainly use it for?
Certain things in the game will call for it. Usually the DM is using it to roll on a table of some sort. Like a table of magic items or some effect that happens. Anytime the game says there's a certain percentage chance, a d100 roll comes in handy for that.
I need help downloading it D: idk which is the right game to download someone pls help
To play D&D there's nothing you have to download
No, D&D is a game that happens in your imagination. You and your friends all create characters and one of you is the Dungeon Master. And you all tell a story, the DM gives you the scenario and the details of the world and you as your characters react to it. What is it on Steam that you're trying to download? There are some D&D video games, but that's not actual D&D, its just games based on it
there's one that says d&d online
and then there was a classics bundle but that's just baldur's gate games in a bundle
D&D online is a mmo based on D&D, kind of like World of Warcraft. The baldur's gate games are RPGs based on D&D. Great games, all, but the original D&D game, the one this server is about, is the tabletop RPG.
Pen and paper and dice are all you need for actual D&D
ohhh thank you so much for your help
Is there anyone doing virtual campaigns? Even one shots? Looking to learn how to play, and maybe find a group to play long term

Hello, for someone who has never played DND before or any other table top rpg what do I need to know/do before trying to join a campaign. Do I need to buy a players handbook, create a characted, ect? I don't want to try to join a game unprepared and be an annoyance to experienced players.
Hello im new to this and i have no information on what to do. I just wanna know if theres something i can use to learn or know what to do before joining a campaign. Any information will be helpful
I suggest to learn everything about filling your character's sheet at first. Try with some random characters without backstory, just to get used to it
you can watch yt videos about how it works, or posts
Ah i was jsut about to ask
Yo, I have bad sight and I was wondering if someone could recommend a good n’ cheaper dice with a really good color contrast?
just do a quick search and anything can help, just watched a very intuitive video from The Fox Den
doing it will take you to learn about races, classes, stats, and antything crucial for gameplay
Alr abt races does every campaign have the same races or are there campaigns that have like more different races
you are free to choose any race you want in a campaign
Hey chat so like how do I play dnd >_<
Get some larger dice, and a paint that would be high contrast for you. Re-ink the numbers on the dice. It’s super easy with a thin brush and a towel to wipe away the excess.
unless it's specified by the DM, wich i think is very uncommon
or for the plot convenience
Alr then i was prob just going to stick to fighter human or human monk
Oh wait wrong questions, chat how do spells work is what I meant
Since i dont want to make anything to crazy imo
Depends on the DM. Some may allow all books. Some may allow some books. Some may introduce homebrew. Hard to say until you’ve sat down with your DM and figure out the game that’s gonna be run.
depends of the class, but generally, you have a spell of a certain level, and if you want to cast it you spend a Spell Slot
I see i guess just incase i should make a few characters just incase they dont allow all books
every class has a board with the specific amount of known spells and spell slots
per level
Oh btw just a sort of random question are there dnd communities that have smth like warhammer 40k related theme too it or does that not exist
Make all the characters you want as practice, but don’t commit to any of them til you’ve got a group. You’ve no idea what kind of game the DM will be running, nor what the other players have in mind.
Play with concepts and get familiar with the rules, but avoid making something you plan to play until you know what you’re playing in.
As i have noticed some servers have a sort of different custom story from the books
Folks can add all sorts of homebrew/3rd-party ideas to their games
D&D isn't one set setting
Oh okay neat and uhh lowk didn't read but skimmed through, how would I find an online campign

never played with no 5e rules, but i got understood people twist the rules a bit for some campaigns
Wait just read it and you have to pay for a dm 😭
Alr then ima now just try to watch some videos from fox den and understand the character sheet atleast
Not all if im right theres a channel that you dont need to pay for a party
How do spellscrolls work in dnd5e 2014?
Yeah I tried reading through but there's so many different channels thst I judt got lost lol
Yea same here since ur a player this might be the channel im not sure #looking-for-players
- If you are a player looking for a game, go to #looking-for-players and message a poster or go to the thread attached to a game post and indicate you're interested.
- Or check out #looking-for-community which are other D&D servers you can join and may have a variety of D&D games you can join.
- Or you can use the bot commands to create a post in #looking-for-dm to tell folks you're looking for a group. The bot commands are described in #find-a-game.
Or do all of the above
I'd also recommend looking at other TTRPG sites, forums, and sites
Spread your net wide
What are the larger dice measurements? I found a crap ton of dice on the internet. And also what material is good?
Here are some of my favorites. They're chunkier with big numbers, and can easily be re-inked if needed.
https://www.etsy.com/listing/1800230988/lucky-ducks-in-a-row-dice-set-polyhedral
Is it weird that I use the D20's I get from Magic the Gathering sets?
Just spent 10 minuets looking for campaigns
Not a single person is AEST and ain't none of it friendly for newcomers 😭
That'll happen
Nah cause there wasn't a single aest that's what lowk pmo it's either American or England
No, but check what kind of d20s they are. I think MTG uses a different pattern from standard TTRPG dice called “spin down” dice that give a different spread/probability of landing on certain numbers.
That's true, but I also have a normal set of dice just in case. There not that big, but they get the job done, and are easily readable.
Ignore timezones and instead see if a game fits in a time that you can play. Who cares if it's US Eastern if it fits in a time that you can make and play? There's even games that are play by post (PBP).
You'll get better advice on how to make your choices reflect what you want in #character-discussion .
Some DMs will frown upon that because the numbers are not evenly spaced out but rather in order. A real d20 will have opposing sides add to 21.
I'm not sure the math is that big of a deal. YMMV
the math, no. But it can be more tempting to "knock" or "nudge" (air quotes to indicate it wasn't really an accident) a spindown die to a better value since it's more likely to be right there.
Use a dice tower.
If you're going to fudge with a Spin down die, you'd only be moving it up 1 or so... With a regular d20 it's much easier to nudge from a 1 to a 19.
I mean I have a set of dice used for D&D so I don't have to use the MtG Dice.
Yeah, but I meant it's more tempting to know you've just missed, and you're less likely to "get caught"
Hello
I want to get started with dnd. I know that in order to play you need to create a character, but I have no friends to play with and I never played before so I have no one to teach me. I also don't have enough money to buy equipment. Is there a site that tells you how to play?

You'll get arrested by the dice police
Not the Dice Police!!
Just make sure they're actual D20's and not life counter di. Life counter "D20's" are set up so that the numerals are in order so it can skew RNG. 🙂
Just make sure it’s not a spin-down die. Those aren’t meant to be rolled, because the numbers are in a specific pattern that could affect the outcome
Do they so higher or lower rolls?
Just to know
I have a set of actual Dice. So I don't have to use the MtG dice.
It's just different. Easier to manipulate since values are clustered
Can you tell me more about them?
I think they are spin down dies, but I have an separate set of actual dice to use.
Colossus' write up is solid. Basically on a true "random" D20 values are specifically placed so that there are equal amounts of high and low values in clusters, "Life total" / "Spin Down" / "Count Down" Dice however are set up for easily turning from one value to the next in line so one side of the dice may be more "weighted" toward high rolls etc.
@zealous ferry Feel free to ask any of your character sheet questions here.
So it looks like I filled some bubbles in and I’ve forgotten why
That’s means I specialize in that stuff right?
The bubbles represent your skill proficiencies
So every class during character creation can choose some skills to have proficiency in.
Mmhm it looks like I forgot to add my proficiency bonus then
?tag new proficiency
Proficiency
All creatures have a Proficiency Bonus, which reflects the impact their training has on the creature’s capabilities. The Proficiency Bonus table shows your Proficiency Bonus, which is +2 for a level 1 character.
This bonus is applied to a D20 Test when the creature has proficiency in a skill, in a saving throw, or with an item that the creature uses to make the D20 Test. The bonus is also used for spell attacks and for calculating the DC of saving throws for spells.
Your Proficiency Bonus can’t be added to a die roll or another number more than once. Occasionally, a Proficiency Bonus might be multiplied or divided (doubled or halved, for example) before being added.
I’m supposed to have four of those right?
Two saving throws from your class. Two skills from your background, two or more skills from your class.
And, sometimes, skills from species.
That’s what I thought
I only have the two I have to figure out which ones I’m missing
Some classes (Rogue for sure, I think Wizard is one) get more than 2 skills at level 1.
Well, we can work that out. What species, background, and class is your character?
Human wizard noble background level 5
Is it considered cheating to use cheap dice?
Checking to be sure before we go forward: 2024 rule?
Ummm 5e???? If this question was for me
Or home made dice
Human will give you one skill proficiency of your choice, Noble will give you History and Persuasion, and Wizard will give you two from its list at the start.
Yes, it was for you. You're coming in at a weird time - there has just been a reprint/update of the Player's Handbook & Dungeon Master's Guide, with a reprint of the Monster Manual coming early next year. There are some differences between them, but not so much as to call it a new edition.
No need to overcomplicate it. Let's assume the most current rules for new players.
I usually do, but I've been bitten on the assumption before.
Not necessarily. But some tables may not allow spin down dice just because they are designed so differently
That said, you can usually find some pretty cheap regular dice sets if you don't care what they're made of
Digital Dice are also an option, and they are free to use
Can someone explain to me how a spell book works like I’m stupid and they have prior knowledge of my stupidity
So, spellbooks are exclusive to the wizard class. Basically, you write down all the spells you know in the spell book. Its just where you store them. Then each day, you can choose a certain number of those spells to "prepare." A spell needs to be prepared for you to actually be able to cast it
The spell book is all the spells you can prepare. The prepared spells are the ones you can actually cast
And do I still need a spell book if I’m an elemental wizard?
This made perfect sense thank you so much
I don't know what you mean by "elemental wizard." Thats not one of the subclasses you can choose from
It’s a homebrew subclass
You would still need a spellbook of some kind.
I would HIGHLY recommend you avoid homebrew when you are new to the game
(Barring the subclass specifically saying something otherwise).
But also, I second, third, fourth, and fifth what Colossus just said.
I’m not brand new to the game I’m just a little dumb
a) homebrew has a tendency to be either really overpowered, or really underpowered. b) homebrew stuff when you're learning can lead to you internalizing the different stuff rather than how things actually work, which can make it harder down the road.
I’ve been playing for a couple years, I’m just really bad at making characters sheets and I’m not sure why
Still, it makes it much easier to learn what you are doing when you stick to the actual rules. If you think of D&D like a video game, homebrew is like a mod or balance patch. You shouldn't go changing aspects of the game until you have a very solid grasp of the fundimentals and know what is or is not ok to change
Not to mention, a Wizard starting at a level higher than 1 using a homebrew subclass is probably close to as complicated a new character you could possibly make
Maybe it's my relative age (and that I still think Wild Shape is a capstone feature rather than a defining one, goshdangit), but I find druids and sorcerers harder to grok.
For most people, though, I agree with your sentiment.
I can believe Druids, but Sorcerers is a surprise to me
Generally speaking, the more magic a class has, the more complicated it is, so yeah Druids and Sorcerers can be complicated to some extent.
I had no issues with Druids way back when Wild Shape was a capstone ability at level ~16. And, honestly, it's probably my dislike of Wild Shape becoming the defining feature getting in my own way as much as anything else.
Suffice to say, this is still the case
Nvm divination it is
I've been so steeped in 5e's culture and community at this point that Wild Shape just seems incredibly normal to me at this point, but I remember when I first started playing D&D I was really confused and off-put by it. I like the fantasy trope of the "nature mage" but in my mind, at least at the time, "nature mage" and "animal shapeshifter" were too completely seperate archetypes
How many spells do I start with in my book as a level 5
It came in during 3.X, which was the era I skipped.
You'd start with 6 in your book and gain 2 every time you leveled up. So at level 5, you'd have 14.
You start with 6 level 1 spells at 1st level.
However, your level 3 feature Divination Savant would grant you even more.
And 2 more that are specifically Divination, from the Divination Savant feature.
At level 5, I think it's 4 additional Divination spells
Two 2nd level spells and two 3rd level spells
And 6 first level spells?
- 6 level 1 spells at 1st level.
- 2 more level 1 spells at 2nd level.
- 4 more spells at 3rd level, when level 2 spells unlock. Two of these 4 must be Divination; the other two may be from any school, but level 1 or 2.
- 2 more spells at 4th level; 1st or 2nd level from any school.
- 3 spells at 5th level - one Divination spell of up to level 3, two more spells of level 3 or lower from any school(s)
You'd start with six first level spells at level 1.
You'd gain two more at level 2.
Then at level 3 you'd pick two divination spells that are either 1st or 2nd level. THEN you'd pick two spells of any school of in the same way.
At level 4, you'd pick two spells of any school that are either 1st or 2nd level.
At level 5, you'd pick one divination spell of 1st, 2nd, or 3rd level, and then pick another two of any school that are 1st, 2nd, or 3rd level.
At level 5, you only get 1 specifically Divination spell.
In addition, whenver you gain access to a new level of spell slots in this class, you can add one Wizard spell from the Divination school to your spellbook for free. The chosen spell must be of a level for which you have spell slots. (emphasis mine)
Ah, my mistake
It's OK; I messed up the first half of the feature when I was writing my own part out.
You can see how Wizard is often considered one of the more complex classes to build
Especially because, out of the 17 spells you know (excluding your 4 cantrips), you'd only have 9 of the 17 spells prepared to be able to cast on any given day.
It can be any 9 of them cause that was my next question
Yup
At the end of a long rest, you pick any 9. Because you've reached level 5 and have the Memorize Spell feature, during a Short Rest, you can trade out any one of the nine.
But remember to take a nice mix of your 1st, 2nd, and 3rd level spells. You never want to find yourself in a situation where you have 1st level spell slots, but no 1st level spells, for example
Heyyy, so i want to create a fighter owlin with strong, i already have a rough idea but for some slots i just dont know what to put
Sure, what do you need help with specifically?
We ask that recruitment remain on the appropriate channels in #find-a-game .
The server rules still require that looking for games happens in the proper section.
And it is teaching newcomers so it belongs in this channel
This isn't really a discussion. iamrazorwing/doshbones told you what the rules are.
This is a discussion channel, where we go over the basics of the game and the rules. Advertisements for games should go in #looking-for-players or #looking-for-dm even if they are games for newcomers.
Please keep all lfg to our lfg channels!

Any race can work with any class!
Sorry if this is a dumb question but do the breathe weapons for dragonborn do some kind of debuff Im a brand new dm and one of my players has cold breathe and he said it freezes the monster (He's a new player too) but I didn't see anywhere that confirmed this
It freezes teh monster in that it does cold damage.
Other effects, if any, would be specified in the write-up.
Yeah thats how I played it I said the monsters speed was reduced
Things do what they say they do, and nothing more. All you have to do is read the ability to know what it does. The dragonborn's breath weapon does not say that it applies any debuffs, so it doesn't.
The breath weapon will do "cold damage" but that does not mean the enemy will have its speed reduced or anything like that. The breath weapon would need to say that directly for it to be true
How many cantrips do wizards start with?
There's a table in the free rules that lays it out.
Thxxxxx
But, the answer is 3 cantrips at level 1, gaining a new cantrip at levels 4 and 10.
Help me choose a 4th-level Bard spell. I'm playing a Bard (CoE) 6 / Rogue (Swash) 6.
I've already chosen Polymorph as one of them. The remaining picks are Phantasmal Killer, or Greater Invisibility.
Can't go wrong with Greater Invisibility.
hlo everyone i am new to dnd and i wanna learn how to play or whom to play with can someone teach me the basics ? it would be a huge help ty

You guys are the only reason ingot my character sheet done so thanks so much @timid locust @fallen surge @carmine shuttle @upbeat citrus
Its our pleasure. We're happy to help. Glad you got it figured out
Yeah. Everybody you tagged is pretty generous about helping to onboard people into the game when we've got time.
I am here because of Legends of Avantris. That's my story.
Welcome!
I'm here because I've never done DnD before and I want to try Pbp since I've done of roleplaying, just not DnD.
You can pretty much consider me to be total noob, so if anyone can help me get started with a campaign, answer questions or have any suggestions, it would all be greatly appreciated! As long as you're comfortable with teaching me a whole bunch of things
I'd start by getting comfortable with some of the basic concepts by reading the free rules (linked above).
If you're particularly interested in PbP you could also check out the PbP forums on DDBeyond to see how dnd is played there. https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/d-d-beyond-general/play-by-post
I'm trying to make a post, and I see that some people are doing X/Y (50/50, 60/40 etc).
What does this mean? I know it has something to do with roleplay and combat itself, but I'm a little lost on this one.
What does the roleplay part entail?
As in, what would be examples of that (Romance, NPCs, IDK, Eating? Is that a thing?)
50/50 role-play to combat means that there's a perfect balance between rp and combat.
Non-combat roleplaying typically - exploring, investigation, social encounters, etc.
Ah - okay. What do you recc for a beginner like me?
DnD is a game where your characters find themselves talking to NPCs and their companions. It's a big part of DnD and the favorite aspect of many fans of DnD.
As a new player I'd worry less about the ratios of roleplaying to combat because you haven't experienced the game yet and likely don't know what part of the game you prefer.
These interactions can be normal, friendly, hostile or something in between. Some people even like to do romantic interactions.
Once you have a few game sessions under your belt, this video of Ginny Di’s from about a month ago might be useful: https://youtu.be/VoGVEUU8PRo?si=AswuVOQcgesWnRyN
I'm one of those some people - I'm a sucker for romance
Some people might not like to do romantic interactions. Some might just think that their character is out of your league. Or maybe your character is out of their character's league.
And some tables have norms regarding intra-party romance. It’s definitely a Session 0 topic.
Haha - well, I'm not too concerned for romance, at least at the romance. There's also the fact that it's a bit weird for a... um... Minor to do romance online, even if I've done it before. And even without that, isn't there problems with romantic party members? The way I see it, when your character tries to flirt or seduce another player, that basically means you're doing it to that person in real life, which just doesn't sit right with me because of my age and stuff.
If I find a group more my age (I'm not sure if I'm allowed to even reveal that) then I might be more open to it, but for now I think I'm just going to do a normal campaign to get the gist of everything.
Thanks for the help!
I should clarify - I do not mean e-dating by romance online, it's between made up using characters and such.
Personally I feel comfortable doing romantic interactions with other people. Though I am probably more comfortable doing that with people I'm close with. But yes, it might be best to avoid such interactions with people much older than you.
Is clarifying age allowed here? Or is it more of a -18, 18+ thing
Just play a plasmoid or an autognome. Easy fix. XD
Mods don't like specific numbers.
. . . I'm going to go learn what the means.
Oh, and in regards to that specific numbers thing - I'm allowed to be here if im -18, and am I allowed (Or rather, are 18+ members/dms allowed) to let me join them?
Underaged people are allowed on this server. As long as you're old enough for Discord.
Definitely am - so, I guess I'll go create a post?
Plasmoids are slime people who reproduce asexually. Autognomes are small robots that were invented by gnomes.
. . . does reproducing come up a lot in this...?
No.
I remember watching this like intense 40+ year or something DnD guy who's history was literally created by their own players roleplaying in the history time period
Thank God lmao
Epic stuff
I hope you understand that asexual reproduction is, for example, cutting off a starfish's arm and having another starfish grow from it.
Of course of course - if I didn't I shouldn't even be on discord. I meant reproduction in general - do campaigns even last that long, where multiple bloodline are utilized?
I don't think that's the norm. But understand that each DnD group has its preferences. One group might want to keep the lore unchanged while another might want to make plasmoids mud people.
Love that!
Is it acceptable to play multiple campaigns at once?
Yes. But I don't recommend doing that as a new player. Learning about DnD is already overwhelming by itself.
Okay!
Hi
Hello
How are you
I recommend checking this out.
i just started playing for the first time w my friends and one of our other friends is dm, its a pretty cool game so far, i like how u can play around w how u want to make ur character

Wanna play so bad but I'm limited to mobile 🥲
I played one campaign got a taste, we all died, and they split and never played again..
D&D is played in the imagination. As long as you have a way to communicate with other people, you can play the game. It doesn’t matter if you are in mobile or not
I know i just feel like
I might give others some lesser experience because I cant access a lot of things due to the limitations.
🫠
All you need to do is find a group that chooses to play without the tools you don’t have access to. There are lots of games out there that don’t use VTTs or anything like that.
whats a vtt
Real
Finally. Is D&D Beyond the best for new players online? Me and a few friends want to play and are super new
A virtual table top. The three or four most common, in no particular order, are Roll20, Owlbear Rodeo, Foundry, and Tabletop Simulator (which can handle a crapton else but also has a gigantic learning curve and is pretty horsepower-intensive).
online or paper?
So I'm not a newcomer to DnD, but I am a 1st timer when it comes to the Class I'll be playing when my group's next campaign(Yugioh styled) comes around, so I'd like some tips for playing Rogue(2014 rules)
Hey anyone up ?
Hi
Hello I want to get into DnD and fine some people to play with! I only know the very basics of DnD so please if you can, invite me to a session so I can have fun doing improv
You should be able to find a game and a DM in here
https://discord.com/channels/516367331358801950/1070720656917938227
Is there any other questions that you might have?
How do i even play dnd??? What the heck did i got myself in to....
At its core, it's a game of
DM describes what's going on. The area, the creatures, the details.
Players decide how they act and/or react.
DM describes consequences, changes, reactions, etc.
Things have statistics in order to determine how things interact or how likely things are to succeed. So the dexterous rogue skilled with lockpicking can pick locks and sneak much better than the paladin clanking in heavy plate armor with no dexterous talent. It's less likely you'll hit a tough dragon with an attack, than you would a slow clumsy zombie. It's more likely an assassin will save against most fiery spells than a heavily armored non-dexterous thug.
So it doesn't devolve into "I hit" "nuh uh" - we have numbers and rolls and actions to determine if your weapon does hit with that attack, how much damage, etc.
That's how characters are made, yeah.
the Class is the most important and defining aspect of a character's capabilities.
It's the largest portion of 'things they can do' in the game rules
While the race/species is also somewhat important, it's much less prescriptive.
You can absolutely have halfling barbarians and orc wizards and high elf paladins. Just that usually people mix the 'wizardy elf' with wizard, the fighty orc with a fight-centric class, and the small race with hiding as the class great at dextrous things which includes hiding.
You'd use #find-a-game . Make sure to read it carefully so you can know how to make a post using the form. You'd want to make a post in looking for DM, as you would be (a player) looking for (a) DM.
Okkkkzzz
Why can't i find a game it's been 2 weeks 😩😩
It can take a long time to find one
- Way more players than there are DMs
- Various time zones and specific rules that make not every game a possibility, so you need to find one that actually fits you
Hey you! I'm new here I hope we can all be friends (even tho there are a lot of people on this server)
Welcome!
What if we start a campaign in chat rn a homebrew
What? In chat? Like dm or this one?
Please take any game soliciting/organizing to direct messages or use the proper Looking For Game channels. It is off-topic in teh discussion channels - thanks!
hi im new to this whole thing. how do i get started from a scratch?
i’m new too, i started by watching dimension 20 to get a lil more comfortable with dnd, then i started researching the kind of character i’d want to be because that takes sooooo much time

i guess the rules are important too 😂
Focus on chapters 1 and 2, plus whatever you need for the character you build.
Howdy, I wish to not sound like a moron for my lacking D&D knowledge. All I know for a fact, is I have six stat rolls and an empty character sheet.
Have you picked a class, background, and species?
Or did you have a certain character concept in mind?
I had a character concept based on an OC I had for Cyberpunk. But I highly doubt I can use it in a role-playing sense.
I figured Rogue/Sorcerer could work
Yes to class and background, but still figuring out species
I'd focus more on what you want and less on optimizing what is best. JMHO.
Understandable.
Hello! Me and some friends are looking to start playing together through discord (maybe tabletop simulator later if we get hooked) and just wanted to try a one shot. I just want an easy set up that we can play from, I wouldn't mind paying a few bucks for some pdf files or something but there seems to be a jungle to traverse to find something simple to get everyone started. Does anyone know where i can find a quick adventure with 5 ready made characters linked to it? i've played a couple of one shots but none of us have DM:d before.
Rogue Sorcerer / Invis Sandi netrunner
If u cant find one, you could always try to dm
Looking for a DM willing to run a Dragon rider themed campaign
i think thsi will be more helpful for you #find-a-game
Thx
i think the characters for lost mines of phandelver is there too, not sure if the dm material is out for free though
The module was free at some point, but not anymore.
I think they resealed it because Phandelver and Below: The Shattered Obelisk came out, a third of which is just the original Phandelver slightly adjusted.
oh i ran it in paper form
i bought the starterkit when i first started playing
but only now later on i realised how difficult it could be for brand new players
True, there are modules that cater more to new DMs, albeit smaller than Phandelver. I can always recommend Peril in Pinebrook, which only exists as a pdf.
It's a small one shot, but very well written to start out.
@stoic kestrel have a minute or two to hop in a channel and give some advice and chat?
here is good!
can't see any voice channels though?
ah haha
I sent you a message
Uh I'm trying to create a character Owlin(mostly likely a sorcerer) to be specific do I need to use an app or something? Despite being in this server for a while I have no idea how anything works
How are you creating it?
If you're using DnD Beyond you'll need access to the Strixhaven book.
I'm still waiting for the dnd beyond to actually work and stop saying "updating sources"
But I was also going to ask where do I create characters?
Well you can create them on DnD Beyond... or you can create them on paper.
Or you create them in whatever virtual tabletop your DM is using
im new to dnd and i just spectated a session in a convention, i also bought my first dice set
my friend knows a dm so thankfully i can start my first session soon
Oh paper seems easy enough
I hope I'm not wrong lol
Hallo i’m nee Here

Hey guys 😌
hey
Currently waiting for someone to be looking for players who can play on discord and welcome newbies
Keep scanning #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community
Also recommend checking other sites like Roll20, other TTRPG forums/sites, even check your local library
I'm an old school paper-only guy so... Well kind of, I usually use a form-fillable PDF.
Same four
Oh can you dm me one?
Well I havent found a 2024 one I like yet but...
The official 2024 character sheet in PDF format: https://media.dndbeyond.com/compendium-images/free-rules/ph/character-sheet.pdf
Just a question, what is the difference of a normal sheet and a 2024 one?
I am in this business since yesterday
I got the starter set
There is a 2014 sheet (that's when D&D 5th edition was initially released) and they recently updated things here in 2024 with an updated Playerss Handbook, DM's Guidebook, and soon to come Monster Manual.
Mechanically there isn't a lot of differences so it's more just layout and trying to make things more apparent
And it is also cooler
I like what they've done with the 2024 updates - I feel it makes things easier to understand and more approachable.
I like the PDF to have the large fields that don't scroll. They adjust the font size to fit the field.
It’s now 20:35 pm by me right now so I have to go bye. And thanks for the information👋
It’s not bad for a first-level character, and the process of reading things and doing calculations helps you learn your character better (IMO)
Hi everyone, it's a pleasure to know you all, I'm not gonna lie I'm pretty new in this of D&D and I will like to learn, can someone teach me?
Anybody have the Google doc.. or character sheet that can be edited?
We unfortunately we don't have time/bandwidth to teach people D&D one on one. But I can point you to #learn-to-play and the free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
Start there and feel free to ask specific questions in an appropriate channel here (see #channel-guide)
I think the Avrae Discord bot has a link to a Google sheet but not sure it's ready for 2024 updates
Thank you very much!
If you are on a server with Avrae, use the !help import command to get a help message that has links to a Google Sheet for D&D
Hola
Hey. If you are new to DnD I recommend checking this out.
Hey I wanna start playing dnd I’ve made a profile have a party and and getting ready to buy the starter set is there anything else I need
Sounds like you're ready to go! You can check out the free rules ahead of time to get a good feel for the rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
Great thanks
Are you going to be the DM or do you have someone else to do it?
Have someone else
I’m trying to get into a dnd game
Check out the #find-a-game and #looking-for-players channels!
I would love to just join a random campaign with a random DM, and have fun.
Question: I'm trying to create a dnd character for my friend for our first one shot. She wants to be some siren character (merfolk). Is there a race specifically for players or only the enemy file?
Sea elf or triton should work. Both of those were released in Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse
Alternatively, water genasi, also in the same book
Thank you! I am aware of the triton race, I was considering that an option.
Another question, for sub races do you add the ability score from the sub race with the actual race Traits?
For example. You choose an elf (plus 2 dex) and then choose an high elf for subrace (plus 1 int).
Doe you add both the dex and Int ability scores? Or just the Int one?
Yeah, where you have the races from the old 2014 player's handbook, it works like that.
Keep in mind that racial ability scores have been removed and now get given via background in the new version of the rules.
So I currently only have access to the 2014 book, however I've only played dnd twice. Am I still able to play dnd with the 2014 book and character creation?
Oh absolutely! DnD is pretty famous for the fact that people still play all editions of the game, all the way back.
So whatever edition your table prefers, stick with that!
Concerning this server, it's good to know that people will generally assume that you're talking about the newest material, so it's good to specifiy that you're talking 2014.
Should I switch to 2024 book? All I really care for it the character creation in that aspect. (Haven't bought the book yet due to money)
2024 makes some design adjustments that are pretty good, but it's really similar to 2014. You can check out the free rules if you want to compare.
That's a personal preference. I mean people are still playing 1st edition D&D. But eveyrthing going forward will be based on the 2024 rules.
Yeah it really depends what works for you and your crew.
Since I'm a more new player should I switch to 2024? Or stick to 2014?
Specially is background origins easier to use then races for ability scores?
Hey! I’ve been playing dnd like on and off, but never really got too into it/played it properly. There’s a dnd app I know that could be used for character sheets, so should I use that instead if I get back into dnd?
It's really not much different, but I suppose it's slightly easier, yes. Since any species can have any background.
It's really convenient. You can also try it for free with the basic rules. Just keep in mind that you'll have to buy a license to the content there even if you already have it in your physical books.
If your refering to DNDBeyond it is a fun way to make characters and is one of the primary resources used by both online and home games. However, like mentioned before if you are not in a campaign with someone sharing content then you will likely have to purchase some of the source books to get the most out of it.
Is classes different in the 2024 version compared to 2014? Just so I know if it's something I need to majorly research. (I think I will be switching to 2024 version)
Many if not all classes got at least some changes in the 2024 PHB
Some were more overhauled than others
No the classes are exactly the same except fo rhte addition of artificer. However there have been some features of those classes that have undergone some changes as well as additions of subclasses toall
The classes are not exactly the same, and some research will need to be undertaken if you are switiching from 2014 to 2024.
I meant the classes that were in the 2014 are still in the 2024...
I feel like you're saying the same thing with different words. Yes, they all have the same name and the same fantasy, but they've still been changed slightly.

I tried but I can't understand much
I tried to make a character sheet and it's not very easy
Ddb is that a book
Ahhh k tks
Thank you soo much
Btw if I have some difficulty understanding some rule or concept where should I ask
#dnd-rules here
K tks again
Feel like I'm being waterboarded by information I have struggle to understand
Dungeons and Dragons beyond is an app. You can probably find it in the app store on your phone
Salutations, I were always intrigued about the concept of a ton of different people going into a one mission that reunites them both, and after I found that Dnd has the exact same thing I wanted, I said why not but since I don't have friends that's aware of this subject or even someone in my country, I was happy when I saw that there's a Discord server to play dnd on, but everything seems confusing, someone help me on how this server works?
Hi
The difference between #dnd-rules and this channel can be a little tricky to understand at first, but basically, if you want to have a casual discussion about how the basic mechanics of the game works, then you should ask that here. If you have a question about a more complex rules interaction, or you want to know specifically what the rule books say about a topic, then you can ask in #dnd-rules
Yeah, that's how a lot of people feel, starting out. The size of the rulebooks and the amount of information in them can be really intimidating. Please, don't feel like you have to memorize everything. A lot of it can be learned as you play the game. Its very helpful if you go into the game with at least some understanding of how the rules work, but there will be 4-5 other people at the table with you to help remind you of anything you forget. Plus, you can always just pull out the books while playing. They can be a useful reference tool
I used beyond in order to make a decent character sheet. But I acknowledge at some point I'm going to have to make something more than decent.
Thank you
i want to ask how to go about picking a role for your character? like paladin, cleric, sorcerer, stuff like that. how do i go about picking that? and what do each of those entail?

Class
Your class is the primary definition of what your character can do and gives you a variety of special features, such as a fighter’s mastery of weapons and armor, and a wizard’s spells. This article provides a quick breakdown of each available class and can help guide your choice.
Each class also lets you choose a subclass, which provides unique features and further specialization within the class.
Also see https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes to see D&D classes and a brief synopsis of what they do
thank you!

Where can I order the newest books for the most current rules set, I am mostly looking for the base three at least as of right now since I technically only own dice and got my imagination lol anything I might want or need beyond that I’m going to have to get
Besides my dice PDF of the book at least and my dome piece, what else would be necessary to play if anything else, and if there’s nothing else that I 100% absolutely need then what else would just be like a good idea or quality of life type thing
i would suggest D&D Beyond if you are okay with digital, otherwise i would go to your local game store. they should have updated books and most likely have the knowledge of what books to get. That being said, if your just a player and not a DM/GM then access to a player's handbook is all you really need to get started.
hi, what campaign should i run as someone whos never DMed before? for 5 players, and hopefully with an interesting first session because my little brother is on the fence about playing dnd and says he'll only play 1 session before deciding if he wants to join or not
thanks
I'm just here to say hi guys 🙂
I'm new to dnd as well
me as well
Whats up I've never played dnd before

This server is mostly for discussion about the game. You can find links to the Free Rules and some introductory guides in the pinned posts for this channel. Games are also organised in the #looking-for-players channel, where DMs announce what they have and ask for people to reply to show their interest.
I mean I was planning on doing beyond at some point because it’s extremely difficult in my tiny ass town to find anybody and if you do have them be reliable, I’m mostly wanting physical stuff just because it’s cool and it’s something to collect since I don’t want to get back into Magic that much
I haven’t played magic in like a decade and haven’t had any cards in like that long, I mean technically I do but they’re at my mom’s house and they been at my mom’s house. But my cousin recently just gave me like a bulk of like 6000 with mythic commons and everything in between so I mean I still have that collection but I really think I’m gonna get rid of it
But I don’t wanna sell it as unsorted because I’ll get like 20 bucks 1000 cards and I need as much money as possible from the cards to reinvest in DND
i have logged in to hte dmsguild, but what do i do there and what do i use it for?
DMsGuild is a storefront where you can buy D&D content created by the community under the licensing agreement between Roll20 and Wizards of the Coast.
Basically you can buy D&D material created by the community through it.
ok
Here's their FAQ that can explain a bit more: https://help.drivethrurpg.com/hc/en-us/articles/12723265845783-About-DriveThruRPG
thx
Was there something particular you were hoping to find?
no, i just looked at the "Join the community" paper i got with the dragons of stormwreck isle starter set and one of the things listed was the dmsguild website so i logged in and wonder what it was so i asked in the discord
Hi
Got Metal Die... In that moment I realized, why resin die is better.
Metal Die require a specific bowl to roll in,
Resin die, can be rolled anywhere
Well, I have good news for you then. You can buy both the digital and hard copy of the books from D&D Beyond and they will mail the hard copy to your address. I have been using this for all the new books that have come out. I usually get the physical copy about 1-2 weeks after i get the digital release. This makes gaming on-line with others super and you still get that hard copy to collect, or to use in-person.
Hello everyone ^^ i'm new to the world of dnd, but its something i've been wanting to play since like 2019 😭😭 I need help with character creation, can anybody help me?
what's the question?
I tried reading the manual and watching videos about the creation but i don't understand anything that has to do with a die or numbers and calculating stuff 😭😭
are you making a physical copy of your character or using a digital app to make your character?
I like to draw so i was drawing them and i found a reference sheet online that i was gonna print
Like the ones were you like know the charisma, the weapons ecc
so you don't understand how to get the numbers from rolling?
Yup
personally i don't use rolls, because it's not allowed in adventures league. The standard array and point buy is how i make my character's stats. do you know what those are?
Kinda? I Need help with those too
sounds like a template is needed for you to play with. i would suggest going to https://www.dndbeyond.com/ and making a free account and building a free character using there Character Builder as it brakes it down into easy sections and lets you explore.
Thank you sm ❤️
Hey guys
What do you think is the best spell caster class
I think DnD's spells are so cool
And I want to choose either a spell caster class or a rogue
depend what you're looking for i suppose
are you looking for the strongest? or the one that you will like the most? or one that fits your pc?
Ahhh, the one with the most unique abilities
Can I pick rogue and still use spells as my main weapon?
so (most) rouges aren't spellcasters
you do have a few options for spellcasting rouges
the simplest would be taking the arcane trickster subclass
absolutley! half casters are a great options
You won’t get sneak attack from spells though
Hi all! New here, it won't let me type at all in the looking for dm chats as I'm trying to find a party to join
What about soulknife?
Scratch that, didn't realize there was a sub click on them
Generalists > specilaists all the way
that works well aswell! i just used arcane tricketer as an example as it's the one I'm the most expirenced with
Will I have to give up stealth?
No
Also please read #find-a-game carefully as it explains how to use our LFG channels
especially not if you want to focus on not magical combat and have more utilitarian magic
Cool thanks, I still have a few things in character creation that I need to understand
good luck with making your charachter! ⚔️
What's utilitarian magic?
utility spells refer to spells that one doesn't use while fighting but in other situations (ie. roleplay, exploration, stealth etc.) I thought you mentioned at some point wanting to still be able to fight without magic but im now realizing i read that wrong 🫣
Ya I love that
Like better observation and better acrobatics and stuff like that
But I still wanna fight with magic tho
i think that soul knife might be best for you then
arcane trickster is very utility while soul knife looks more mixed (has combat and utility)
Cool, I think that's my way
I believe I did it correctly for making a post
I will say, back when I played as a early-mid teen it was alot different, I'm noticing there's a lot of different campaign "styles" can someone break it down for me as to what is what?
this is my first time hearing about soul knife tbh but it looks very cool!
Community games are like Westmarch-style games (no set DM or group), paid games should be self-explanatory, some folks specify if it’s more a social encounters style game (less combat), some may say it’s a dungeon crawl, etc.
I read about it in the handbook
The only thing I can't understand yet us how points, throws, levels, and all those numbers work
I don't understand how the game operates

Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
if you need help just give a yell
Yeah I mean I noticed people saying like dungeon crawl or homebrew or survival ect
Feel free to use the thread attached to a game posting to ask questions about it if it’s not clear. And even just to indicate that you’re interested in the game.
How do modifiers work?
Each 2 points above/below 10 in an ability score changes the modifier by 1
So an ability score of 14 means you have a +2 modifier in that ability
What does the +2 modifier do?
