At level 18 how many attacks does a berserker barbarian get (pre and post rage)?
2014 berserker can make three during rage and two otherwise.
2024 can make two regardless.
Oh I see, thanks!
Hi, I'm completely new to DnD and know absolutely nothing. I'm just looking for some advice on what my first step should be to get into the community. I'm also very interested in joinging a lowkey, noob friendly game.
- You could watch some games played on YouTube or Twitch just to see what it's like in action. (Podcasts also work for this purpose.)
- Or play the demo.
- Or read #learn-to-play.
- Or you could read through the Free Rules.
- Or you could watch the Handbooker Helper videos (or WASD20's Rules School) on YouTube.
- Or you could sign up for a learn-to-play session through the virtual weekends linked in the server's Events channel.
- Or you can do any/all of these in increments. Read one rules chapter. Watch one explainer video.
Ok thanks, I'll look into this!
Hi, I'm new to dnd but am interested in trying it out, what's the best way for me to start? Thanks

I am new to DnD and am interested in playing through some of the campaigns such as dragonlance. I am currently on my own, but want to find an online group that similarly wants to play campaigns like that. I know there is a looking for players and a looking for DM thread, but where would I post to find/create a group with this interest?
Same here
I have no idea if a group like that exist but i wanna play something like tha too
I think it'd be #looking-for-dm since you don't have a DM yet.
Hey is this server used to help create online DnD groups and games?

Hi guys I just signed up for my first learn-to-play weekly campaign and I'm so excited to start. My DM is very nice and helpful and patient with newbies. I've made a few character sheets for fun and practice but I'm starting a new character just for the occasion.
awesome! Hope you have a great time!
Good luck have fun
Thanks
Hello all, hoping to gain a second dnd game, currently got 7pm-12am BST saturday. not expecting to get games from this but thought i'd introduce myself. got a few years in dnd, and looking forward to some more parties
Probably wanna check out #find-a-game and #looking-for-players
tbh, I did but only see bot messages for them. I sthere something I'm missing to get full access?
The posts in looking for players are generated by forms that the DMs fill out. Just look at the info for the games the posts describe and if it fits with what you want, respond to the post.
Under each one should be a See Thread link or a link to the replies. Just click it and you'll be able to reply to that post that you're interested.
I want to get into dnd but i dont wanna really commit to a full campian and need the game taught to me, is there anything i can do before that besides just like researching how to play
thank you, my appologise on the matter didn't see the other channels
No worries đ
Some people in #looking-for-players may be running one-shots, adventures that are usually self-contained stories that take one session (two, max) to complete.
Hi, are there any python coders that could help me create a server bot for D&D to help with my server in order to better be able to play a different type of D&D game?
I know wizard of the coast has some D&D guides are there more guides to learning D&D, It's been several years before I played the game and I want to get back into it as a DM and a player. Has the game been even greatly expanded since 1997-1998?
I can't speak to how its changed since my only experience is with 5th edition, but there are plenty of Youtube videos and whole channels geared toward helping you learn D&D. Just searching "How to Play D&D" on youtube will get you some pretty good stuff. If you wanna go a bit deeper on the DM side I definitely recommend Matt Colville's Running the Game series on Youtube, though he has a way of getting into some pretty high level stuff in a fantastic way lol.
Has the rules changed since then, where do we find the rules if they updated?
hi! Im new on here! So excited to start playing!
The current edition (5th Edition) has been running since 2014. They just came out with a new Players Handbook and Dungeon Masters guide that updates many areas of the game, but its still 5th edition. The videos you'll find on youtube about how to play will still be useful and there are plenty of channels going deep into the new version as well. Honestly, the new PHB does a GREAT job of explaining the game for new players, so I highly recommend it.
Welcome!
welcome, D&D is awesome
sounds likea really silly question, but what are some of things I physically need to start playing DnD. Dice? A notepad?
what version are D&D are most players playing from?
When DnD Beyond says "at will" for a lvl 1 spell does that spell basically become a cantrip that doesnt require a spell slot?
i have Mage armor on a warlock in a character sheet that says this... also is there anyway to get this effect to show on the sheet bc it says the AC will be 13+dex mod, but clicking it does nothing
5th is the current edition. Most people are using either the 2014 version (as it's been current for the last ten years) or are adopting the 2024 update. The essentials are the same and 2014 content remains compatible with the 2024 books.
Yes it is basically a cantrip for you now. The only way i can get that to show is to override the AC to show the higher one
Dice, notepad, character sheet. That's probably about it.
thank you
And all of that can be done with free digital tools too and you can get the free D&D rules online. So there's a pretty low barrier to entry lol
I made a character already and I can't wait to play with my character!
another question I have is it possible to add steampunk style with greek mythology with underwater storytelling into D&D?
along with exploring the cosmic universe
hey everyone
Just joined, that was weird
I would say you can definitely do each of those and all of them together. 5th edition has a setting that is very steampunky (Eberron), a setting that is Greek myth inspired (Theros), and tons of creatures and stuff for underwater things.
awesome, I'm excited!
i watched a lot of noah the magic videos and figured dnd was a cool concept, so here i am
so they say that litteraly imagination makes the game right?
Thanks for having a Discord server, and helpful members in here!
Yes pretty much. There are rules and guidelines, but the story comes from collaboration between a Dungeon Master and the players.
so if i wanted to be a cowboy with two revolvers that could happen?
Definitely
Depending on the DM
so uh, how do i start? do i just ask someone to play, need a board? drawings? anything?
Check the Pinned Messages on this channel. There's one that says Ready to Play Some Dungeons & Dragons? You should check that out.
yeah thanks for this, i overrode it just by setting it as the new max, a bit confusing tho bc one of the options says "Override base armor + DEX" and i assumed putting a 13 there it would just auto add DEX since that can change but it didnt
Yeah i found that too. Its honestly one thing DDB needs to fix.
Of course
Is it okay to make content on the D&D game playing, are there any additional rules that would include?
oh

video content on the story-line that I am going to be planning on doing etc. rules that are needed to be implimented by Wizard Of the Coast and dndbeyond that will help not break any rules to issue a lawsuit etc, hope that this might help explain where I am coming from.
Unfortunately that's something im not familiar with, sorry
1 - we can't give any legal advice nor should you seek such here (see server rules)
2 - Homebrew is community created content, rules, and items that are not officially part of D&D. That said feel free to make your own homebrew to add to your D&D games.
3 - Homebrew can be wildly problematic and unbalanced if you don't have experience with the core game rules and mechanics.
Check out #homebrew if you're interested in homebrew content and getting feedback on it.

hi Im new to the server and dnd in general
Welcome!
hope to learn more about dnd while im here I really wanna try my first game soon
Thereâs some good links above to get you started with that, but if youâve ever got questions, fire away!
hello my friend and i are trying to find a group!
we new asf and dk what were doing @north forge
#find-a-game can point you toward the available groups here.
#learn-to-play message has some additional advice for that.
Thatâs a channel link.
If you click it, youâll be taken to another channel that has instructions for finding a game here on the server.
oh I already made my character
Hello I'm looking to talk to an experienced DM - to DM a DM if you will. Would anyone have 5 mins to chat?
when making my character do I have to do it on the website??
hmm ok
@jagged mantle hi - DM here, send me a message if you want to chat đ
How can I make a character
Welcome!
Just joined 5 mins ago, done exploring the tabs. Pretty chill ngl, not alot of people active rn tho. đ”
Early morning or middle of the night so itâs quiet
My phone gonna explode or nah
I would first check out #learn-to-play or this channelâs pinned posts which have links to the 2024 Free Rules which contain everything you need to make a character and learn the rules of the game!
As for character sheets, people either use a digital one (such as through D&DBeyond), or a physical one. Both have their pros and cons, but for newbies I recommend using a digital sheet through D&DBeyond as they have a built-in character creator with the option to export your character to a PDF for printing
Dndbeyond is restrictive, some races need to be paid to access like tabaxi. Physical better
All races outside of the Free Rules need to be paid for in some way, though there are avenues of sharing content both physically and digitally
I prefer if you reference the bonuses and other buffs and just put it in the DND beyonder sheet, not effective but uh it works đȘ
Maraka shakalaka bababoi đȘđȘđȘ
Hey Guys how are you doing :D? I have been playing we the thought of trying DnD for 10 years and I never got the chance until I found just now that you can play this online with people. I have 0 clue about the game but I would love to be part of this community. Is anyone up for it and teach me the Game it would be highly appreciated.
Hi I'm looking for a D&D bot and a good resourceful moderatorive bot any recommendations please?
Welcome to D&D
thank you ^^
Have we checked out DNDbeyond and YouTube Matt Colville on YouTube Running the game series on YouTube? He is extremely helpful, and there might be some help tutorials on Wizard of the Coast website also. I'm sure if we look on the sites we could type How to play D&D and we can find out more about this.
I would def check out #learn-to-play or this channelâs pins, both have a bunch of useful resources including links to the 2024 Free Rules!
I know that D&D is a strategy thought invoking series that can be very interesting.
the classes and subclasses of DnD which ones are the most fun that turns out pretty interesting all the way through to the end.
thank you i will check him out i just hope i can remember all the rules haha i am more of a learing by doing kinda guy.
You know what would be cool like a Dnd Mini campaign that teaches you the fundementals of the game or something
I wouldnât worry too much about memorizing every rule, there are simply too many for it to be practical. Whatâs better is to be familiar with them, and to be able to look up information quickly if you forget something
I'm similarly the same way. I learn more by interacting, and Im a female that likes to play guy roles on Rpg.
What youâll have fun with is dependent on you and what you want to do in the game with your character.
What all are things we can do with the characters?
Most of that will be covered in the Free Rules, outside of specific options released as part of paid books
I'm trying to learn how to get in touch with my imaginative side, so far I haven't reached the visual part of my brain, I was told that playing D&D might help try to learn how to get the imaginations started and help to improve the thinking capabilities.
Writing helps with that to
It certainly can! Coming up with creative solutions with the abilities and tools at your characterâs & partyâs disposal is a wonderfully fun part of D&D
Perhaps my previous answer about what you can do is a bit vague, but there isnât really a way to comprehensively answer it in a concise way other than going through the rules. A common saying is that you can do âanythingâ in D&D, but itâs not 100% accurate. Iâd say a better way of putting it is: You can attempt anything in D&D, if you have a feature allowing you do so and/or the DM allows you to.
What if I start and get stuck with a mind block and can't actually come up with solutions, I will look and sound ridiculous while trying to get familiar with playing D&D. It's almost like I have a wall up without realizing that I have a wall up,lol.
Thatâs one of the reasons why you have your party, to help you out if you get stuck đ .
I'm thinking that I might try creating a shy male animal of some sort that has mother nature capabilities ,can we do hybrids?
That being said, most problems your party faces wonât have singular âcorrectâ solutions with a linear path to solving them unless you quite literally are being tasked with solving a puzzle or something similar. When I talk about solving things, I more so refer to open-ended problems youâll come across on adventures such as âfind out who poisoned the wellâ or âget this magic ring to the volcano.â Both are singular goals but the method of carrying them out is largely up to the party.
Animals are not an official playable option in D&D. âHybridâ races exist in various forms depending on what youâd want. The Shifter and Simic Hybrid races are both humanoids that can adopt beast-like qualities, though the latter option is intended to only be playable in specific settings. Humanoid animal races also exist such as the Tabaxi (catfolk), Kenku (ravenfolk), and Aaracokra (eagle/hawkfolk).
Unfortunately, none of the racial options I listed are included as part of the Free Rules. However, if you wanted nature abilities and the ability to temporarily transform into an animal, I would definitely look into the Druid class. Itâs pretty much their whole schtick
Earlier today I was thinking something like polar bear with dragon and shark like features with half human that had natural capabilities like tornado, hurricane, wind , lightning strikes. I'm not exactly sure how to go about coming up with the right kind of playable hybrid etc.
The former half sounds like youâd enjoy playing a Shifter Druid. The latter half is harder to translate within the boundaries and rules of the game, but Druid does get access to a plethora of nature spells
Any tips on playing in play by post campaigns? I'm fairly new to them and thought I'd ask
Here is a quick link to all official playable options, just keep in mind a few options are intended to be setting-specific:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/races
And then for your convenience hereâs the Free Rules section on the Druid class:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/character-classes#Druid
I still have some research to do before making the final decision to create a character. Thanks for helping. I have a lot to learn.
For PBPs I recommend:
- Responding at a good, fairly consistent pace.
- Engaging with fellow players both in character (highly recommend) and out of character (not strictly recommended but nice to keep PBPs rolling)
- Exercise patience since PBPs tend to move slow
And I do not recommend: - Overloading each post with actions that would need rolls.
- Writing excessive prose, especially where it would make it difficult or frustrating to determine what you actually want to do
Ah thank you
Two,suggestions on PBP to go,with Starâs last two points:
- No more than 1 roll per post, except that in combat roll attack and damage simultaneously.
- separate narrative and mechanics visually in the post. That could be mechanics in italics, doing all the narrative and then a mechanical summary below, what have you. (Those two are the versions my brain tracks best, but everybodyâs brain is different.)
Hi I'm new to dnd really new and am wanting to learn is there anyone willing to teach?
Anyone have a good site/app for pc/ipad to create map from a player view ? With annotations ect ?
How much of dnd is made up by the dm and how much is from some pre defined rules?
Is it like the dm just takes done monsters locations etc and puts them in a specific way or is there more freedom with that?
the dm can take statblocks or locations that other people have made and use them, or they can make their own
theres a lot of freedom
generally, unless otherwsie stated, the rules are used, sometimes people change them, which is homebrewing/houseruling
like how monopoly has a bunch of rules, but your family might go "oh you put the jail money in free parking' or something
im new to dnd game, how do i get started
how do i find a group to play with and stuff

thx
You can think of it as the DM and players telling a collaborative story and the rules being there to resolve uncertainties within the story.
In some sessions, you may not even roll that many dice.
I see
The only thing I dislike about dnd so far is I don't have any one to play it with
Well, In some time there is a chance I will be in a Campaign of my friend so, :D
I cant wait to try playing actually
Probably the hardest part
dnd's job is basically to just tell the story, dont put yourself in the story as a dm or run the story
shiitt if we can find others id play with you, idc who i just wanna play gang
I was more thinking how much of it is predefined
I'm not a dm for now hopefully
It can also be played through tabletop simulator right?
im still in the process of setting up a witcher homebrew
yeahh foundry is one but its $50 to dm, for players its free
To help with that, there are adventure modules whose job it is to give you a predefined story. You may also want to come up with your own, but it's quite a challenge.
there is likely free ones out there so get some more information
WITCHER HOMEBREWWWW
Go for it đ
Hii! Just joined the server nice to meet yâall
ive got everything i just need to make more maps
but i dont know where to do so for free
Iâve been into D&D for a while but never had the time to play until recently, Iâve made a few character sheets but Iâve only ever played a couple sessions. Does anyone know a good way to find people who wanna do a campaign online or something?
I also just finished the hell that was assembling a set of 3d printed dice
they are cool now
d4 d6 d8 d10 d12 d20
Yo that sounds sick
this server for finding ppl its still early so give it a little
Literally me
Twinning âšâš
Man if you find someone let me know
https://makerworld.com/en/models/780957#profileId-718053
They are sick assembled but assembling is hell, especially the d20
If you try make sure to read how to assemble them, I at least were not able to do it without the help of it
its 8 am so likely people are working or asleep
I am currently walking to work
hello fellow european
Are most of the ppl on this server in the states or smth
Yep
not sure, safe to assume there is a healthy amount however
Cuz trying to play dnd across timezones sounds like it would SUCK lmao
Like scheduling sessions and everything
yeahhh
Man I wish I could just play irl
#dnd-maps ? Check the pinned posts there.
REAL
Like I have a friend who wanted to set up a campaign together but she was SUCH a problem player and these days we donât even talk anymore so yea

Iv never played a game of DND in my life. However, Iâm interested in DMing. What should I do to learn to run the show?

Welcome! The bot post above has some very helpful resources that can get you started. The best place to begin would be the Free Rules. Chapter 1 specifically, on how to play the game, is vitally important for both players and DMs. It would probably be a good idea to at least get a basic understanding of what player characters can do by reading through the section on creating a character, but you'll definitely want to focus more on the "Dungeon Master Contents" sections after that.
I understand this will seem like a TON of information all at once, so take it slow and feel free to ask questions. Starting off as a DM is much more work than starting off as a player, but its not insurmountable. We're happy to help.
Are DMs rare?
IDK if "rare" is the right term for it. There certainly are a LOT more players than there are DMs though
Anyone can DM
Ik that, but not everyone is whiling to play them. I thought it would be the opposite, since world building is the best part about fantasy/sci-fi.
I can appreciate and applaud that mindset. Not everyone feels the same way though. There's a whole host of reasons why, and I don't want to get too deep into it for fear of misrepresenting someone's feelings. Enoki is right that anyone can be a DM, but being a player just appeals to far more people, generally speaking
I would venture to suggest that one reason (though far from the only one) that people don't generally like GMing is that it represents more work/time required to be ready for the session.
And it generally means one has to be the one to do the legwork of organising and scheduling, which I personally find one of the hardest parts of being a DM.
Where can I go if I want to learn how to DM? Or maybe Co-DM? Game-wise I'm pretty new but I'm very good at creating worlds and environments!

I've bought digital book at D&D Beyond, I can't use it on Roll20?
Nope. Different platforms owned by different people.
The Beyond20 extension for Chrome can help bridge your DDB character sheet with a VTT like Roll20.
Hey I'm new and I want to get into dnd
Thanks
Those are the free rules that will get you acquainted with the game.
Then you can check out #find-a-game when you're ready to play (if you're looking for an online game) or just grab some friends and play irl
Something that doesn't exist in the country I live dnd is not that popular at all
Dumb question. But do classes like Ranger or rouge need a spell book to track their spells?
Well theres plenty of online options
I dont believe so. I think the only class that needs a spellbook is wizard
So are you a dm ?
Not currently but I've been dming for 8 years on and off
Okay so do have any plans for setting up any campaign sooner or later Mr ?
Not at the moment no
Iâm a first time dm and was wondering what amount of stuff I should prepare for a session 1, Iâm got a general idea of them fighting off some cultists in a dungeon after some people who hire them turn out to be cultists who wanna sacrifice them to the blood god
statblocks for the cultists
The layout of the dungeon, at least in terms of which areas connect to what.
Do they have a pet beast? Big wolf or something?
What's the loot situation like?
What language are their holy texts written in?
what kinda loot should i give them? im starting off at level 3 or should i change that
i have dungeondraft so ill probably use that
is thier any good tools for making statblocks?
What makes sense for them? Do they abduct and sacrifice lone travellers? There's probably a pile of backpacks somewhere with clothes and sets of travelling gear. Maybe a priest's kit, maybe a merchant's. The gold is likely kept in a lockbox somewhere.
Anyone about to do a oneshot?
You could mix them up with some commoners (https://www.dndbeyond.com/monsters/16829-commoner), bandits (https://www.dndbeyond.com/monsters/16798-bandit) or guards (https://www.dndbeyond.com/monsters/16915-guard) for variety.

Just wandering. For classes sorcer and warlock, for cantrips do you learn and keep the cantrips at higher levels? Or you just get the cantrip slots and need to be taught a cantrip spell. Thank you.
Your class table will show how many cantrips you know at each level.
For example, a level 1 sorcerer starts with four cantrips.
When you reach level 4, you gain an additional one for a total of five.
I understand that... I'm just confused if you level up, you get free cantrips. I thought they are just like spell slots and you go and get a spell teacher to teach you a cantrip spell to fill them like any other spell.
I apologize, but based on that message I believe you might have a fundamental misunderstanding of how spellcasting works
Enlightened me.
A cantrip is a spell you can cast without expending any resources - "free", so to speak.
Prepared spells have some mix of finite resources required in order to use them, including both preparation and a spell slot of sufficient (or greater) level.
None of these answers are adressing what I originally asked...
Spam actually did answer your question - in modern D&D editions, you aren't required to seek out the spells you gain by leveling up. Wizards can add spells to their spellbook beyond that; no other caster can.
You know a fixed number of cantrips, based on level, that could be cast 3750 times if you wanted.
Again I apologize, but the degree to which it sounds like you misunderstand spellcasting necessitates a ground-up explanation for you to understand how you allocate Cantrips.

gotcha, thank you :D
It didn't. I think what i asked was rather simple. I know have enough knowledge on spellcasting for something that simple. All I asked was about the wording.
I regret to inform you that almost nothing in this message is correct
Alright hold on. I am going to copy n paste you the message, because this sounds like a communication issue.
You start with a set number of Cantrips, which you can't change out after you've picked them. You cannot learn any new Cantrips from other characters, spell books, or scrolls. When you reach certain levels, as specified by the class table for your character, you can add a new cantrip to your list.
THANK YOU
I must say, I thought cantrips were more flexible of a mechanic. I can see how this became confusing.
đ€
Most classes now actually can change one of their cantrips each time they level up.
Most classes that have cantrips available have a mechanism for slowly changing them out.
And wizards can change one every day.
Sorcerer, again, for example:
Whenever you gain a Sorcerer level, you can replace one of your cantrips from this feature with another Sorcerer cantrip of your choice.
Is that sorcerer part for the new PHB? I can't seem to find it in the book. Just says about additional cantrips.
Fair point!
It is, indeed. last sentence of the first paragraph.
Yeah, that's for the 2024 sorcerer.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/character-classes#Level1SorcererSpellcasting
The 2014 classes generally aren't able to change their cantrips.
Xanathar's Guide might have had something in allowing them to get swapped. I vaguely recall something to that effect as an optional rule or something similar.
Yeah, there's an optional class feature that lets them change it when they get an Ability Score Increase.
Roughly one every four levels
Hi! I am BRAND new to dnd and need help with creating my character. I'm on the website and I think I did everything but it keeps telling me it's in complete and I'm missing Species, Class or Ability Scores. Can someone give me some guidance?
Looking to start playing as well new to all of this can anyone give me some direction how to start
So, I think it would be immediately obviously if you forgot to do your class or species, so I would bet you are missing your ability scores. That is one of the tabs on the character creator on D&D beyond though, so Iâm wondering if you looked at the page and skipped it, or input something other than what it expected.

The bot post above has some excellent resources for you. I would recommend starting with the Free Rules. And, if you have any questions, feel free to ask them here.
Sounds good thank you
Thank you! I figured it wasn't class or species since I defintely picked those. It's defintely ability scores. I thought I filled it out based on another page in the creation but I guess not!
Ok, new player here, joining an ongoing campaign at my local store. They are all at lvl 4 and are requesting me build my character at lvl 4 to match the party. I'm building a Wizard and I'm having trouble understanding the whole known vs prepared spells thing.
Level 4 = 4 cantrips, 4 first level, and 3 second level... got that, but is that the total number I "know" or do I know more and they just aren't "prepared" until I long rest.
So you have spells that you know. These are all in your spell book. But imagine that you can't memorize all of them each day, so you have to study the spellbook each morning and the ones you study, you remember for that day.
If you don't have them prepared that day, you can't cast them, unless something else in the game says you can
THanks Dust, that's what I was thinking it was getting at but I don't see how many I can put in my book to study from each day?
So after each long rest, you prepare a certain number (specified by your class's description in the book).
As a wizard, your class ddescription should tell you how many you start with and how many you gain on level up. Additionally, if during your adventures you find spell scrolls, you can spend some gold and time to put those into your book too.
are you using 2014 PHB rules or 2024?
2014
So you start with 6 spells at first level. Every time you level up you gain two more.
The number you prepare is based on your intelligence. It would be = Intelligence Modifier + Wizard level
So at level one, if your int mod is +4, that's 5 spells you can prepare each day
ah ok, so at level 4 with a +3 int modifier I'll be preparing 7 per day. I should have my original 6 in my book, plus the ones that I'll have gained by going up to level 4.
yes that's right
(I think I'm overthinking this lol) I see that line at the top of page 114 saying I have six 1st-level spells. The only thing remaining fuzzy is the chart says 3 known cantrips and 2 spell slots... I feel like that clashes somehow?
Cantrips are cast without spell slots.
You use a spell slot any time you cast a level 1+ spell.
And you get your spell slots back when you finish a long rest.
ok, so I pick 3 cantrips that I "learn" in the beginning and those are the ones I'll carry with me for hte rest of hte campaign (as I add more when I lvl up of course)
Yep
Though depending on the class, you might be able to occasionally trade one cantrip for another.
2014 wizards have an optional class feature that lets them trade one of their cantrips after a long rest.
But since itâs an optional rule, youâd have to ask your DM whether that feature is allowed.
cool
thanks for all the help, this gives me way more options than I thought I was going to have.
One other wizard perk involves ritual spells.
If a spell is marked as a ritual spell, you can spend an extra 10 minutes to cast it without using a spell slot.
In the 2014 version of the rules, you needed your spellcasting feature (or something else) to let you cast a ritual-able spell as a ritual.
In the 2024 version, if you have the spell, and it's also ritual-tagged, you can ritual cast it.
While other classes would need the spell prepared in order to cast it that way, wizards can do it with any ritual spell in their spellbook.
ooh, fancy. I'll have to keep that in mind as I pick the ones for my book.
Whether youâve prepared the spell or not.

Kinda cool and broken,
But idk, I think wizards got the best cantrips
I want to do a short 1 on 1 campaign over 2-3 sessions with our forever-DM. I've never DM'd before and would appreciate a recommendation for a pre-written campaign to use as a base so I can build some confidence in it.
We are very lore and worldbuilding focused, and love creatures with atypical social structures and manners of socialisation. I will probably rework anything recommended to incorporate Fae and Dwarves.
đ
Did you read what I wrote? đ
We're not too hot on tombs or catacombs, any recommendations for wilds or nature-based settings?
Don't think I can easily reflavour either of those two
Icespire peak series maybe?
Or keys of the golden vault is a good one as well @molten surge
I'd scroll through the low level adventures available on the DMs Guild for prewritten modules. Hopefully with a bit of searching somethign will take your fancy
https://www.dmsguild.com/browse.php?filters=0_0_45418_0_0_0_0_0&src=fid45418
I personally use modules a lot in my homebrew DMing to use as a base. I find that with a bit of imagination most things can be reflavored to fit whatever worldbuliding you fancy.
Golden Vault instantly piqued our interest!
They are easy and very whimsical and easy to run! Good luck on your first time dming
Thanks, very exciting đ

The only situation I could imagine that happening would be at a game-store, Adventurers League, or similar event where two tables dont individually have enough players to play (1-2 players). In that situation I imagine it more likely the DM from one table would become a player.
Even then, I've had some of my favourite moments DMing for just 2 people
The less people it is, the more flexible and easier to maintain. Thatâs just my opinion but I love to interact with a group of 4 or so. It makes it lively for me
Just my opinion as a player ( who played once with a group of friends )
So as a new dm what is the most efficient way to read the starter rule book and the campaign book?
With a nice tea, biscuits, and some pen and paper to write down things you consider important
Cheers âïž
Well As a new dnd player...I love the idea of being a DM since im always the creative type when it comes to story, world building and even sometimes interesting Npc's but one thing I really don't know how to get into is species and races in the world
Like how do I the DM of a future session understand other species and races
Can you elaborate on what your concern is?
well
like say interaction
I heard that usually an elf is much more "prideful" or from what Ive seen in stereotyping not to be rude or anything
is there somewhere were I could fine an entire info log on Species and races personality and common traits to make note worthy Npcs
I'd actually flip it around and ask how much you want to have that sort of thing. It's perfectly possible for species to simply live together in a big melting pot. Some canon locations like waterdeep have representatives from a myriad of places.
If you want ideas, you could start by reading the species entries in the players handbook. They all have flavortext.
ahh thanks
In general the game is getting away from "Elves are this way and orcs are that way" and i think thats for the best. Its much more interesting when the species of your world are made up of individuals that act according to their own personal goals, ideals, and flaws (much like the real world). Instead of thinking of NPCs as what species they are and then building their personalities around it, decide what their personality is, then figure out their species. But thats just my take
I like both ways TBH.
I sometimes just like an evil race to just be evil, like a 90's Saturday morning cartoon villain. No Malice just there evil because they are evil.
is there any dnd game that can be played on online app?
There's lots of ways to play online. Check out #looking-for-players if you're interested in joining a game.
How do I fill out the background part of my character sheet
Where would i be best off if im trying to look for games to join?
Go to #looking-for-players
The answer was literally right there. Whoops. Mb
Ur good dude
Are you playing 2014 rules or 2024?
2024
@sinful thicket thnx for the reply
You'll choose a background from the ones in the phb. It will be "Acolyte" or "Wayfarer" or something like that. And the background will give you bonuses to your ability scores and you get to choose a starting feat as well as some additional proficiencies and equipment
Correction: the background tells you which feat you get
i am curious on what app do you play dnd from is it from roll20 or d&d beyond?
There is any way to play solo mode?
With D&D 2024?
The rules aren't written with solo play in mind, that's important to state firmly.
However, there have been solo adventures published on sites like DriveThruRPG, certainly for the 2014 rules. Those should still be useable just fine with the new rules.
Any way with some kind of AI?
Not inconcieveable, there are text based AIs out there that can write something resembling a play by post game, but there are many limits. Such as cost, questionable material sourcing and the fact that an AI will inevitably fall into certain repetitive patterns.
is there a way to start an campaign today for a trial or no?

Hey everybody, joined recently
hi
hey
Welcome traveler
Or, if you're in the US, NextDoor (which is how my last group had come together).
I am interested in paying people to be in a DnD group, like literally- is this something people would be interested in
hello , i am new here , i am looking for group to play with
Hi. Iâm fairly new to dnd. Is there anyone that would want to teach me the basics? I have played once but I donât really know what Iâm doing
I'll bite: why would you want to pay people to play in your group?
@wild onyx Genuinely so tired of dealing with 99% of my time on this being spent looking for a group that I would rather just pay- I can afford to throw a few hundred at this if itâs entertaining
@wild onyx Also it would be nice to make sure everyone was on the same page about making it fun and entertaining
Perhaps consider buying into a game where you pay the DM.
I have done that but I really donât like how often they lie in their ads
Then I have to block the charge and they get mad, would like to try and create it from the ground up, just to see if it is even possible
Like paying for my own personal improv show
When you word it like that itâs not that crazy lol
@sinful osprey thatâs literally the intent
Hey everyone i joined recently and i'm new to dnd. So far the only thing i've done is creating a character on dnd beyond. Are there anyone who would be willing to show me the basics and how to play?
@sinful osprey I get you, I was just throwing out some thoughts on it- I work a lot and donât really have a social life, hence my name- at this point I am at a place where I really donât care if my interactions are transactional, I am too tired
10k isn't "just" for a lot of people. But if you're fine to pay for a game, you could check out #paid-looking-for-game
@main fulcrum Yeah I have been doing that, I just donât like that some DM lie about who they are and what kind of game they run
All I can say to that is keep trying, and possibly try other areas as well. Finding a good d&d game often takes time
@main fulcrum yeah you are right, I will just stay positive
Where are you finding these DMs??
Could you elaborate on what it is they are lying about? I've never seen that before, but if you are expiriencing it regularly, I'm wondering if there's some sort of miscommunication or misunderstanding
I think a few of us newcommers should begin our own campaign with an experienced dungeon master
I bring the idea mostly because I'm new and would rather learn under the guidance of a more educated dungeon master with other inexperienced players anyone down??
Please use private message or the Looking For Game channels to organize groups/games. Soliciting or organizing games in the discussion channels is off-topic. Thanks!

guys, with Greater invisibility, as a rogue, can I throw a dagger at someone with advantage because i'm invisible (and thus with Sneak Attack) and then move so no one knows where i am?
or do i have to hide again even though i'm invisible?
normal invisibility stop once you start attacking
but if the enemy has a passive perception that is higher than your stealth check, then you're not hid to his eyes
but then, does invisibility bypass passive perception checks?
I believe invisibility gives you advantage on stealth checks, it doesnt totally bypass passive or active Perception. Unless im missing something
Invisibility does not give you advantage on stealth checks.
So it doesn't my bad
It's a common house rule, but not RAW
if i pass a dex save and am resistant to the damage type, do i take quarter damage?
and do you round down or up for rolls?
if you pass the saving throw and have resistance, you take a quarter damage yea
always down per default
if you ever round up, the thing making you roll will say so
Relevant link to the free rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/playing-the-game#Dice
thank you very much both
I have a question about the PHB 2014 spells. The '1st level and higher', you get "X" spells typically with a class restricted spell list. I want to know is it like cantrips where you get more cantrips upon leveling up? When you the 'Spells known' part increases?
It sounds like it does, but I'm not certain.
Yeah, when your number of known spells increases, you can choose additional spells until you've got that number.
Ah cool, thank you.
So if you have 10 spells and it jumps to 12, you can add two more spells.
Hello Ive seen a lot of DnD clips, started watching sessions and also tried creating a DnD character but Ive never played nor really understood how it works is there anyone who is willing to help me?
Like is there a beginner tutorial on youtube?
As I recall, for the 2014 caster classes who aren't wizards and have limited prepared spells, you can also replace one spell you already know any time that you would gain a new spell.
Welcome! There's some good stuff in #learn-to-play that can help you get started.

But if you've got any specific questions, feel free to ask!
Thank you guys very muchđ
Quick question, I've been looking into one of my abilities under Circle of the Stars. It's a dragon form that turns int and wis checks as well as constitution saving throws that are 9 or lower into a 10. I've never used this but would that include a nat 1?
Yes
Note that natural 1 saving throw or skill check rolls are not failures unlike to hit rolls (e.g. if you're trying to hit a target and roll a natural 1, it misses regardless of abilities, features, modifiers, or bonuses)
Okay, that's good to know
A 10 on a saving throw may not be all that awesome though - depends on what the Difficulty Challenge (DC) of the thing you're saving against.
umm hey can someone help me or
i just need help on how to put my find a game character in the find a game channel
Is a Skeleton Paladin who still has his human characteristics a plausiable DnD character ?
Possibly. There is no official skeleton species/race but you can work with an accepting DM to take an existing species and flavor it to be skeleton-like.
That said, I'd recommend if you're new to D&D to stick with the core game options first and get used to the game.
I mean he is still human, but without blood and flesh
That would be a reflavored reborn
Copy that since I already created that character Ill keep it and create another one with the cire game rules
Thanks :D
Reborn are basically the playable undead that are not fully undead.
The other undead-like playable race are the dhampires
That said, it's a 10 on the d20, so you can still add bonuses. For example, it's great at meeting the minimum DC for concentration.

Iâm newer to dnd and am loving it. Been dabbling since June this year. Rouge has been my main for now.
So I've been listening to some podcasts and playing some baulders gate and I would love to get a character set up yet I have no Idea how, can a DM or someone help me please and thank you? I don't know where to start

I have a question about Grappling.
Does the attacking grappler have to roll as high or above the creature to grapple the creature?
And when the grappled creature is trying to escape does it have to have to roll as high or above the grappler to escape?
And/or does the grappler have to keep on attempting to roll as high or above to keep on grappling the creature?
I don't know have ability check work between to competing creatures
Using the 2014 rules?
Thatâs called a Contest.
Whoever rolls highest wins.
If itâs a tie, the situation remains unchanged.
(In this case, the target would remain ungrappled.)
You can find the rules for contests here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/using-ability-scores#Contests
While you have the Invisible condition, you experience the following effects.
Surprise. If youâre Invisible when you roll Initiative, you have Advantage on the roll.
Concealed. You arenât affected by any effect that requires its target to be seen unless the effectâs creator can somehow see you. Any equipment you are wearing or carrying is also concealed.
Attacks Affected. Attack rolls against you have Disadvantage, and your attack rolls have Advantage. If a creature can somehow see you, you donât gain this benefit against that creature.
None of these effects say you have advantage on making a stealth check. That also would not make sense, because if you take the hide action to make a stealth check, and you succeed, the result is that you gain the invisible condition. So if you already have the invisible condition, there is no point in taking the hide action
@smoky adder The rules for grappling changed in 2024 vs 2014?
Yeah, the target just makes a saving throw.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/rules-glossary#UnarmedStrike
Itâs also now considered an Unarmed Strike.
ic
So now itâs an option in more situations, like when making an opportunity attack.
So I am in the works of making a character, and I am wondering can a half elf, also be half gnome?
Hi
Flavor-wise, sure. But mechanically, it will just use the half-elf traits
unless you and your DM comes up with something different.
Alright, I currently don't have a DM, but I thought of something interesting if it was possible, at least for the start of a back story
I would hammer out your character concept and once you get a DM you can propose it. Just be ready to go with the strait Half-elf mechanics if they aren't cool with it.
Or the gnome ones
Right
Then maybe pair it with a background to represent your other parentage.
So pick 1 for traits and best case scenario I could use both both races sound interesting, looks like i have a few weeks lefts minimal on character creation, especially because I barely know what I'm doing hahahaha
You probably wonât find a DM that lets you use all of both.
Finding one that even lets you use part of each could be tricky, depending on the exact combo.
I doubted i could use all anyways, thought the language would be what I could use of both then go the gnome route
What about dm
They were telling me for flavor wise, my thought of a half elf half gnome would interesting however when it comes to the traits it depends on the DM but most likely I'll only he able to use traits from 1 or the other, not combined
The last time I was dm I had someone like that but yeah it's up to the dm
having some trouble understanding my hp. Starting into a game at level 4 with Wizard. Con mod is +2
?tag new hp
Hit Points (HP)
Hit Points are a measure of how difficult it is to kill or destroy a creature or an object. Damage reduces Hit Points, and healing restores them. You canât have more Hit Points than your Hit Point maximum, and you canât have less than 0.
Your class and Constitution modifier determine your Hit Point maximum at level 1. Hit Point Dice, or Hit Dice for short, increase your Hit Point maximum when you gain a level. A creature can also spend Hit Dice during a Short Rest to regain Hit Points.
Some spells and other effects confer Temporary Hit Points, which are a buffer against losing actual Hit Points.
At first level your HP = your max Hit Die + Con Modifier. Depending on your DM, each time you level up, you'll either roll your hit die and add con to determine additional HP, or take the average and add your con.
The phrase that's getting me is "Hit Points at Higher Levels: 1d6 (or 4) + your con modifier per wizard level after 1st. So, first level I'm an 8 (6+2 for con mod). Got it. Second level I roll a 5... do I add 7 to the 8 that I already am?
our DM says roll for con but anything lower than a 4 counts as a 4.
Let's say at second level you roll a 5 and add 2 for con, that's seven. So you add the new 7 to the old 8, to get 15 as your new max HP
sorry, not roll for con, roll for hp
perfect
that's what I was doing... but I just wanted to make sure I'm not inadvertantly overpowering myself.
yo im trying to make a homebrew for this summer but im having trouble finding where i should start because there is so much to do, can someone help me?
Try #homebrew for everything homebrew
ok thanks @echo kelp
Yeah that's how lots of DMs do it. Keeps players from having that moment where they roll a 1 on their new HP. that sucks, let me tell you lol
But if youâve got any specific questions, weâre happy to answer them here.
Also new here and would like a good experience
Welcome!
What have you got so far? Where are you stuck?
Very nice! If you have my further questions feel free to ask them here. If you wanted feedback Iâd suggest heading over to #character-discussion , otherwise if you wanted to find a group to play with Iâd check #find-a-game
do paladins have access to the whole spell list?
like not ready but just to pull from every day?
Yep
A 2014 paladin can change as many spells as they like after a long rest.
2024 paladins can swap a single one.
but you have access to all spells as long as you have a slot for it
was the main question
Hey as a circle of the moon druid, can you cast a concentration based buff spell on yourself and then wild shape? Like haste and then transforming into a beast to take those buffs? Or when they say no spell casting while in wild shape does that include concentration spells?
^that was worded poorly. Do concentration spells end when you wild shape?
so I would say that the short answer is it depends on the DM. That's actually a really cool and interesting question. Somebody probably knows the technically correct answer. Personally I'd rule in favor of fun and say nope you maintain concentration.
the reasoning behind that ruling is the definition of "concentration" in the rulebooks. The only things that break concentration are casting another spell that requires concentration, taking damage, or being incapacitated/killed. The main thing is that wild shape doesn't require concentration. Hence, wild shaping after casting a concentration spell is technically fair game in my book.
hopefully that helps and I didn't over-engineer the answer
Got it okay, yeah that makes perfect sense. Iâll take it up with my dm but they seem pretty cool about stuff so I bet theyâd just let it slide. Thanks for the help there!
The Mighty Nerd is correct, the rules fully allow for concentration while wildshaped, exactly because nothing about either feature mentions incompatibility. Compare this to the Barbarianâs Rage feature, which explicitly disallows maintaining concentration.
Oh yay! I'm right!
Hi, how did a creature breath inside Mordenkainen's Magnificent Mansion?
and Demiplane
Per default:
Melee: Strength (optionally Dex if it's a finesse weapon)
Ranged: Dexterity
Relevant link to rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/playing-the-game#AttackRollAbilities
is finesse included with martial?
Most finesse weapons are martial. But not all. You'll have to look at specific weapons.
For example, a scimitar has the finesse property, but a battleaxe does not.
Link to weapons list: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/equipment#WeaponsTable
because i was thinking of running a fighter with high dex
and wanted to use a dex weapon
Sure, that works. It would also make your fighter good at using ranged weapons in general.
A better weapon compared to a finesse weapon? You could argue that, sure, but I really wouldn't worry about it to start out. It's going to work just fine.
weapons have Mastery Properties, so that'll slightly influence it. But other than that, a property/mastery you want, big number, should be fine to pick from.
A Rapier is fine and for the largest portion will compete handily with a Longsword, for example.
Rapier is up there since its piercing and finesse
i wanted to do a dragonrborn with dragonhide instead of armor
so maxing dex and my str is a bit lower
and has Vex, which lets you "combo" your own attacks into chaining Advantage on your attack rolls against them. Whereas Longsword has Sap, which just impairs their next attack roll but can't "stack" or otherwise chain effectively.
im also talking 2014
Longsword isn't Finesse so it's not optimal for Dex build
2014 had the huge issue of weapons not really having any distinction, so it's basically just bigger number and does it work for your stat of choice
unarmed fighter should allow for dex modifier
is there any real advantage to going for dragon hide over wearing armor?
2014? I don't believe dragonborn get a natural AC score.
ye 2014
i rolled a 18 and wanted to put it to dex for dragon hide to be equivalent to plate armor
but is there any real advantage to it
sorry typo
2014
for a fighter or paladin
Are you talking about dragon scale mail? This: https://www.dndbeyond.com/magic-items/5380-dragon-scale-mail
That is scale mail with two bonuses, giving you an AC of 15 plus to 2 from your Dex modifier, and has resistance to one type of damage depending on the kind of dragon it's made from. It's not typically available to starting characters.
Ah, from Xanathar's. Well, it doesn't give you disadvantage on stealth, doesn't have a minimum Strength requirement and can't be removed. However it will cost a feat, and you only get a limited number of those through your character's career.
It's a pretty good feat all things considered, since it also gives you a +1 ASI. But it grates a bit with your particular character concept since the claw damage is STR based instead of DEX.
But you could always ask your DM to switch that.
i would be 200% down if they allowed it to gain bonuses from unarmed fighting and dex
1d8 AND slashing possibly
but no upgrade path
cant really get a +1 hands
can i weapon buff hands?
There is the unarmed fighting style from Tashas. Otherwise you could look at magic items that buff unarmed strikes, like the eldritch claw tattoo
Hello to yall!
First of all i am a noob in d&d, got introduced into it by a friend for 3-4 sessions but i would love to host a game myself! So it would really help me a lot to hear any suggestions that you can offer. Really! anything would be great, from map making, characters, props, stories etc.
Thank you in advance

welp, the dm is killing this, something about monk already doing unarmed and we cant have 2
On the bright side, you wouldn't have been able to combine the monk's Unarmoured Defence with the AC from the Dragon Hide feat anyway.
i didnt care for monk things
i just wanted to have a pugilist
like a underground boxer
also at +5 dex i woulda had 18 ac
Can't have 2 what? monks?
2 unarmed combatants
because thats a monk thing
and if i want to play an unarmed fighter i shoulda asked to play monk
I mean, it's also a fighter thing, because unarmed fighting style exists.
Literally only the fighter can take that fighting style.
i mean, i cant argue for them because i also dont agree with them
it kinda killed my drive to make a character since i have to throw the one i was looking forward to out
True, I'm not helping with that đ
But we're here if you want to discuss another idea ofc.
the idea was a spinoff of me wanting to do a dragonborn to grapple and be targetted by friendly "fire element" spells
and since i had looked at dragon hide i could also maybe have ok damage while grappling
idk i also really dislike their stance of "thats what monks do you cant do that"
People often bring their preconcieved notions of what can and can't be to the game. Sometimes they may be right, but DnD does have plenty of hidden assumptions that one might be missing with that attitude.
Grappling has some uses, but is a hard theme to build an effective character around.
being immune to fire is a good enough reason imo
Unarmed fighter is fun but not a lot of bonus actions
Hi I'm new, I was really into wargames before trying DND. Are there any classes that allow me to lead knights or militia as summons?
The main classes with access to summons/minions are wizards, druids, and rangers
i see which of those lead humanoid summons?
In general, I would caution against expecting any sort of large scale combat or mass combat. By the rules, there is nothing about leading armies. That would all be DM fiat.
Generally, you're controlling a single hero.
hahaha i see i sort of expected that. I just want like a small squad if thats possible
Wizards (necromancy) but I'd also avoid going for characters like that if possible for a new player bc it can easily bog down the combat time if you don't take the turns quickly
i see, what would you reccomend
I think paladin is good for new players because you have a bit of martial stuff, a bit of spellcasting, and strong support abilities
There's a paladin subclass (oathbreaker) that can get undead summons but they are not an option in every campaign
hehehe that sounds right up my alley. what type of undead are there
Normally you can only summon zombies and skeletons but you have an ability that lets you try to take control of an existing undead
do they carry any equipment or are they just bodies on the field
OK... are you willing to look at the other PCs in your party as your "squad"?
i suppose i could
skeletons normally carry shortbows but your dm might let you give them other equipment
OK. In that case, I'd look at taking at least your first 3 levels in Fighter, taking the BattleMaster subclass. At least two of your starting maneuvers should then be Commander's Strike and Maneuvering Attack.
Happy to help you work out more in #character-discussion if you want. An older edition of the game had a class that was 100% tailor-made for the kind of think you're envisioning, I think, and it remains my favorite class from any edition ever.

Welcome!
Hey
Howdy!
hello everybody :3
Howdy đ€
What are the different type of dices for?
Are they just for preference or is there a mechanical reason to them,
?tag new dice
Dice
Dice add randomness to the game. The 20-sided die (d20) is the most important one youâll use. When the outcome of an action is uncertain, the game uses D20 Tests to determine success or failure. The higher your roll, the more likely it is that you succeed. The most common use for dice other than the d20 is to determine damage.
When you need to roll dice, the rules tell you how many dice to roll of a certain type, along with any numbers to add or subtract. For example, â3d8 + 5â means you roll three eight-sided dice, add them together, and add 5 to the total.
The 20-sided die is used to determine if you succeed or fail at the different game-actions you might do, and then the other ones are used for everything else. Damage, healing, bonuses, etc. Whenever you do something, the rules will always tell you what type of dice to roll, so you never have to guess or look something up to figure it out.
There's more information in chapter 1 of the Free Rules, if you'd like to see the full explaination:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/playing-the-game#Dice
And, if you're new, your GM will give you instructions on what to roll if it's not a d20. (The odds of them forgetting to specify the d20 for an attack, etc, are probably pretty high.)
Thanks
Me and my buddies are just getting in to dnd and none of us have much experience playing. Some of us have played tabletop games before like Warhammer 40k but no RPG's. Whats the best way for me as a dm to help my players figure out how to make a character and also learn to play the game myslef?

I have read over the Player Handbook for 5.5e too but there doesn't seem to be much in the way of online resources for 5.5
Starter set
Could you elaborate what you mean specifically by âonline resources.â Because that is an INCREDIBLY broad description
Just basic Google Searches, We've found a lot of 5.1e and 5e but not a lot for 5.5 and idk if there is much of a difference or not
Likely 5.1 == 5.5. Thereâs no consistent shorthand yet
I prefer 5.14 and 5.24, but YMMV
So, just to be clear, thereâs no such thing as 5.1e or 5.5e. Those arenât real terms. Some fans use that as a description for the 2024 rules update, but if youâre looking for that specifically, you wonât find anything
Ah I see
Thatâs also why I prefer 5.14/5.24
That clears things up a bit when it comes to resources for digital character creators and stuff like that\
Also We have chosen the sunlit Citadel for our first adventure
Officially, the 2024 players handbook is still considered to be part of 5e, exactly the same as the old one
Generic advice that doesnât rely on specific rules interactions will translate with no problem.
It also means that supplimental resources for 5e like Tasha's Cauldron of Everything and Xanathar's Guide to Everything work exactly the same for both rulesets
But I've read that the 2024 rules have overhauls for some classes and weapon masteries so that seems a bit counter productive to put it under the same rules no? I'm used to warhammer and Games Workshop releases a new editon completely when they do something like that
Its a little bit confusing, I think. But the changes are so incredibly minor in the grand scheme of the game that I think it was the right call. Largely it just affects character customization options. The normal flow of the game and underlying base rules are still 90% the same, just reworded slightly to close loopholes and make things less confusing for newcomers
I see, Also Your base Abilities scores do Effect your saving throws on top of the other choices right?
It should also be noted we are using tabletop simulator for all of this which shouldn't change much
Once you've got your Ability Scores, you consult the table to see what their corresponding Ability Score Modifier will be. The Ability Score Modifier is added to any d20 Test that uses that ability score. For example, to dodge out of the way of a fireball, you have to make a Dexterity Saving Throw. So you will roll a d20, and add your Dexterity Modifier to that roll. If your chosen class is proficient in Dexterity Saving Throws, then you also get to add your Proficiency Bonus
d20+Modifier+Proficiency Bonus is the basic formula for all d20 tests
Ok yes I just wanted to make sure that they stack due to how our character sheets are set up in Tabletop Sim Ex. Strength 17 Saving Throw 0 Athletics 0 We would add the numbers as we need ofc but the table would say your saving throw based on that skill would be +3. From there I assume if you had +2 in Athletics it would be a +5 on the dice for that throw
D&D has had edition changes like that (most notably 2 -> 3, 3 -> 4, and 4 -> 5), but (as Colossus said) this reprinting is more in the vein of "sanding the rough edges off"
If a rules element has not been reprinted in the 2024 PHB, it will continue to function identically with a few caveats. If something was reprinted, use the new thing.
Makes sense I suppose
Assuming you do not have proficiency in the Strength save, but do have proficiency in Athletics, that would be correct.
If a character 17 Strength, their Strength Modifier is +3. This means they add +3 to any d20 Test that uses strength. So, their strength saving throw would be +3 and their Athletics would be +3.
If that character is also proficient in those things, then you add your proficiency bonus as well. If your character is level 1, your proficiency bonus is +2. So if your character is proficient in Strength Saving Throws for example, then your Strength Saving Throw Bonus would be +5 (+3 and +2)
On your character sheet, the space next to any type of d20 test should be the total modifier that you add to that roll. So if we take the above example, you would write +5 next to your Strength Saving Throw box. Then you know, any time you have to roll a Stength Saving Throw, you just roll a d20 and add 5
Ah ok I got that part next question
ask away.
For the Attacks portion of our sheet it i s set up like
[ATTACK] ATK BONUS 0 [DAMAGE]
For the first part does specific weapons or classes have specific moves that would follow as the attack name or is it whatever we want to call it. Or would we just put the name of the weapon for something like a warhammer
Dndbeyond has some premade characrer sheet examples that are pretty good depictions of a completed sheet's layout if that might be helpful
So, this seems to be something that's specific to Tabletop Simulator, so I'm not entirely sure what the answer is here. I've never used Tabletop Sim to play D&D before. I know some people enjoy it, but I think that would be needlessly complicated. Different weapons deal different amounts of damage, so if you can name the attack, it would probably be a good idea to name it after the weapon, so you can keep track of that. But that's just my guess. I don't know what the UI you are looking at looks like
Mind If I dm to you what the sheet looks like
If you upload an picture of it to an image hosting site like Imgur, your can post the link to the imgur page in the chat here
Does anyone wanna run a game this weekend?
One of my players wip sheet
Ok, so [Attack] would be the weapon or other source of the attack, the 0 would be your modifer for that attack, and [Damage] would be the dice formula for how much damage that attack deals
Alright and one last thing
Is xp Shared when it is kill based and not milestone based?
XP is divided evenly amongst the players that participated in the encounter
if 4 players fight a monster, and that monster is worth 1000xp, they each get 250xp
When adventurers overcome one or more monstersâtypically by killing, routing, capturing, or cleverly avoiding themâthey divide the total XP value of the monsters evenly among themselves.
Hi everybody
Right ok I think I got it thank you for helping me out Colossus I appreciate it, Also you Jeff
I want to make a character sheat but im gonna need help
if you have any questions, feel free to ask them here
Of course. I love helping on-board people.
I just want to make sure i dont make my character super weak or super overpowered
As long as you follow the rules, that will typically not be an issue. At least not at level 1. There's not many customization options to choose from at that level, so its hard to go outside the bounds of what is expected. Its only as characters reach higher levels that the combination of choices can lead to more drastic outcomes
Im making an owlin fighter btw
Honestly, the internet tends to blow things out of proportion. I personally thing that everything that's possible within the normal rules for the game is perfectly fine, balance wise. Certainly, some things are stronger than others, but its a co-op PVE game, so even if a character is particularly strong or particularly weak, it won't have a drastic effect on the other players and their enjoyment of the game.
What do i need to put in experience points
0, probably
K
Unless your DM has said you're starting at a level higher than 1 (and has confirmed that you're actually using XP).
Random question, is anyone available to help me design a character? đ
We have the #character-discussion channel dedicated to exactly that. Feel free to post there and people will be happy to help
Okay, thank you
Yup. I spent a whole morning helping somebody build out a drill sergeant.

Had to go looking to be sure. It's an old (B/X-era) adventure. Somebody may have updated it to 5E.
On the dnd beyond website for character custom background what is the difference between Background feature and Background Characteristics?
Using Acolyte as an example:
Their Background Feature is listed there as "Feature: Shelter of the Faithful".
It gives the character something extra they can do during play, mostly for roleplaying.
Background Characteristics is listed there under "Suggested Characteristics".
Those provide suggested values for the character's Personality Traits, Bonds, Flaws, and Ideals.
Again, mostly for roleplaying.
Thank you i was really confused
The features are also gone from the 2024 versions.
And in the 2024 version, it's more of a proper mechanical thing. For example, Acolyte would now give the Magic Initiate (Cleric) feat.
im new to dnd and i just want to know if the website drivethrurpg is safe to buy from
ok thank you
can dnd occur even if its just texting?
i mean like how would that go w dms and stuff
Yes, play-by-post games are a thing. Some folks post about them im the #looking-for-players channel.

Never tried dnd as it supposed to be. Have some mixed knowledge about the dnd universe. Do I post myself somewhere, for people to grab me

Pretty much! #find-a-game is both an instruction sheet and directory to find a group to play with as well as make posts for the #looking-for channels

Welcome!
hi yes i just started and i dont know much about this
I was interested in building a card-based character and stumbled on the Wild Card Rogue homebrew. I made a character sheet for it but it looks kinda busted, has anyone had experience with or with someone else whose used it?
Check out the pinned posts on this channel. Has all the good starting info!
#homebrew might be able to help
Just in case you join a table that is less accepting of homebrew subclasses, I might recommend reflavoring the Soulknife Rogue. The core subclass feature is the ability to summon and throw spectral knives. I think it should be easy enough to reflavor these knives as playing cards
I love this idea
Hello!
hey all
Greetings, is there an ice breaker/general chat? Would like to talk to some peoole and find out, who is night shift. My end goal is to find a group to play with that is nightshift Central Time Zone allowing for online/over discord playing.
If just talking dnd, #dnd-discussion should be fine, otherwise you can try #non-dnd-topics
is pack of the blade the only way to add CHA to weapon roles and damage?
Yes, it's basically the only way.
However: If you aquire the shillelagh cantrip with bard (presumably using magical secrets), that would be a second way.
ok cool
How do I use the channel for Find a DM? I tried scrolling through it and post in it. But, the thing took md to DM discussions
Read #find-a-game carefully as it explians how to use the bot commands to create an LFG post in our Looking For Game channels.
The command starts with /looking-for

My character has 6 levels of wizard and 1 level artificer and for some reason I have 1 4th level spell slot, and no 4th level spells learned. Shouldn't I have nothing related to 4th level spells until wizard 7?
No, because of how multiclassing between caster classes works. 2024 rules say to round up for half-caster levels. It just means y ou can cast one of your level 1-3 spells at level 4, gaining the extra powers, without knowing a proper level 4 spell.
Oh ok
So with this combination, you'll be "behind" on your highest level of spell
I think 5.14 says round down and 5.24 says round up.
So should I not use the slot?
You have a 4th level spell slot, but no 4th level spells. You can cast a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd level spell using that 4th level spell slot.
Ok
How many channel divinity does a paladin get? Phb2024 doesnt say
Look at the class table, it's in there
"You can use this class's Channel Divinity twice. You regain one of its expended uses when you finish a Short Rest, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a Long Rest. You gain an additional use when you reach Paladin level 11." (Edit: typo fixes)
Bit softer limit, because if you've used any of them, you get 1 back every time you take a Short Rest.
Cool
Let's say a "day" ends up going like this:
- Start: have 2 uses available.
- Encounter 1: Use 1 CD.
- Encounter 2: use no CDs
- Short rest: Get 1 back. Have 2 CDs available.
- Encounter 3: Use 2 CDs. 0 available.
- Encounter 4: no CD available.
- Short rest: up to 1 CD.
- Encounter 5: don't use it
- Short Rest: get 1 use back, now at 2 again
- Encounter 7: Use both.
- Long rest.
Granted, that "day" would be a marathon, relatively speaking, but that's why the limit is fuzzier.
what a good way to get into dnd but like with the problem of no one i know is interested
Online play is a fairly common way to play D&D these days. You can play with people you meet online
A few options quickly come to mind:
- If you're a college student, there's almost certainly a related club
- Even if there isn't a formal club, it's easy to start one most places.
- If you're an adult, then my first suggestion becomes looking at a local specialty game store.
- Social Media kinds of networks work well, too - the Book of Faces, a local subreddit, NextDoor, BlueSky, and the like.
- And, as Colossus said, lots of ways to play online.

So I'm from the UK so is there many users from the UK that I could play and learn with?
Hi, I'm Kamie. I started playing DND with my school and want to learn more outside of or meetings!
A lot of players are from the US, but you can definitely find folks from elsewhere. It just requires some patience and diligence!
hi i am juss i started playing dnd with my brother but he moved do college so i am looking for a oline group olso i am from estonia
online
Donât try to worry so much about time zones or locations. If youâre playing with people online, the only thing that matters is availability. If youâre in the UK and itâs 8pm for you, and another person is in the US and itâs 3pm for them, it doesnât really matter, so long as youâre both free and want to play D&D together
mi dude im from estonia
Doesn't change Colossus' point. If ou're playing online, the only things that matter are availability and ability to communicate with each other.
I was replying to someone else, but if the advice is applicable for you as well, just swap out âUKâ for Estonia
You can read through the posts in #looking-for-players to find some, or browse other websites and communities, like Reddit or Facebook
thanks
hi!! i need help with something.
im playing dnd for my first time soon (as a player), and im pretty familiar with dnd, but ive ran into a problem with my character.
shes a reverse mermaid (upper body of a fish, lower body of a human silly concept ik lol) and im realizing she doesnt work with a lot of class types. she cant be a wizard/sorcerer due to some backstory stuff, and im considering making her a bard but im not sure. Any thoughts?
Maybe we can start by figuring out what she would be good at. Did you see her as someone who would cast spells, or use weapons? Both? Neither?
i could see her doing both!
thats why i thought bard might be good because they do a little bit of everything
There are several classes and subclasses which can use both spells and weapons. Lets dig a little deeper. What sort of personality or aesthetic do you think fits the character? Are they a bulky and tough warrior? Are the a quick and nimble fencer? Are they a rugged survivalist? etc
shes kind of a mess of a girl lol. the reason shes a reverse mermaid is because a wizard cursed her to become one, so shes trying to adapt to her new body while trying to find a way to reverse the spell. I see her as someone trying to remain cutesy and feminine but cannot hold the look together when shes stressed/angry
i have a few pictures of her intial designs for examples!
What about playstyle/combat wise, though?
OHH you mean combat wise my bad
definitely more of a tank. since she cant be nimble or quick
this immediately makes me think of a wild magic sorcerer
A fish tank?
nevermind that since u just said shes a tank
i could see that! i just want her to be a bit of a chaos character
HAHAHA
Sorcerers are very not tanky.
Oh isnt there also a wild magic barbarian subclass or am i mixing up bg3 and DnD again?
i havent heard of that but if that is a thing in dnd shes probably gonna be that lmao
Ok so, if you want a character that can use weapons and spells, who's a bit more on the tanky side, with heavy armor and such, that would be either a Paladin or an Eldritch Knight.
It is lemme find the official link for it.
thats just bg3 i think
Nope its a legit subclass just found it
Wild Magic Barbarians are an official subclass in 5e. It was from Tasha's Cauldron of Everything. They have "magic" abilities, but are not able to actually cast spells
a paladin seems good, but one of my fellow party members is a paladin. Is that okay if theres teo paladins?đ”âđ«
oh i might just do that then!!
id assume it wouldnt be smart for there to be two paladins
ive heard nightmare stories from dms about double paladins doing way too much damage together
Yup did a lil research. They have wild magic surges that add to the chaos.
lmao okay so no double paladins
the main advice you'd get from me is to play what seems fun for you.
okay then i think ill end up going with a wild magic barbarian (after i do my own research ofc)!!!
okay!!
Short answer: it depends
Long answer: ask your dm. Youâre new so it wouldnât hurt to have another player playing the same class to help you learn. If its an rpg heavy game all the more reason to both be paladins. The important thing is to have fun.
There's nothing actually wrong with having 2 players use the same class. My first D&D party ever had 2 warlocks. You probably wouldn't want to copy their build exactly, but its always possible to play the same class as someone else and put your own spin on it. But if you're happy with your choice to play a Wild Magic Barbarian, that can be a great option too.
okay! thank you all so much, i really appricated the advice ! : )
We're happy to help. That's what this channel is for
Yup. And if you want more detailed help figuring things out, #character-discussion can help you work through everything at a mechanical level. There are at least a coupel people besides me who will consistently ask, "What's the fiction?" and then help select mechanics to support that.
I am going insane i have bin trying to join a game for 2 hours and only one dm has responded.
okay thank you!!
That's entirely normal. The process of trying to find a game often takes a couple weeks
What a week
Or more. Takes time to coordinate schedules between folks to commit to a 3-4 hour period of time to play.
Holy moly ama eat a pound of canoly
Think of it this way: you're trying to find a group of 5-6 people who all have an availability in their schedule at the same time frame, and are able to commit to that time slot for several weeks or even a year or more.
And that's before you even consider if those 5-6 people would actually be a good fit to play together. Not everyone wants the same things out of a game. Its best to find a group that shares your expectations and desires for what type of game it will be
You may want to look at Westmarch style games of D&D or play by post games which are a little more forgiving of scheduling. Some servers posting in #looking-for-community may offer these types of D&D games.
Ok i did not think of it that way
Ompa lumpa dumpa de doo ama eat three pouns or more of coco beans
I want a wizard multi class to monk

Start with reading the free basic rules.
Try your hand at making a character to see how that process works.
Read up on how to do dice rolls and what the dice are used for. Also look into how combat works and skill checks and saving throws.
Then find a group to play D&D with.
We can't teach everyone one on one
We need you to do some work and read the rules
Then ask specific questions - we can answer those

Welcome! Unfortunately, we just don't have the resources to do 1-on-1 lessons with newcomers. However, we have lots of resources available to guide your journey, and if you have any questions, everyone in this channel is more than happy to answer any and all of them. That's what its here for
Yeah no reading wasnât the way for me. I watched a ton of GinnyD youtube videos. The demo also helps. Worst case scenario google youtube videos for a good starting point.
Yeah watching folks play D&D on YouTube and Twitch can also help
Absolutely
Just be aware that many D&D streams focus on entertainment first over teaching the rules as is
i get it now
Yup. Read, watch videos and bug the sages of wisdom on this server and youâll learn much. Even just lurking in the #dnd-rules chat can help.
Hey yall! Super excited to get started. Iâve been want to play for almost a decade but have never found a tribe
She's great about emphasizing that what you see on streams is entertainment/performance first, and not always strictly rules-as-written.
When you're new what type of session should you start with
What ever session you could possibly imagine!
Though I would just join a game that is open to new players, in person if you can, and learn the rules as a player.
Congrats!!
Just got back into dnd time to wait for a decent dm to adopt me
hey

Are rangers good for a first character?
are wizards?
Are you asking for someone else? Because Iâm pretty sure youâve played a ranger before
Any character class is a fine place to start if you're willing to learn the mechanics!
Yes! All classes are good as long as you are interested in learning them
i love ranger. but is it good if i wanted to teach someone dnd?
Depends if they're interested in learning spellcasting, which is one of the more complicated parts of the game.
If the player is interested in Ranger, then yeah
Head to #looking-for-players.
I would check #find-a-game
If youâve applied to a post the DM thatâs made the listing should get back to you sometime later
how do you apply?
yeah how
#find-a-game has the instructions, but you'll either write in the attached thread or send a private message to the poster.

hello!
howdy đ€
Hello, sorry if this is in the wrong channel, and this is a long shot â but are there any sessions/campaigns with romance? Like how does that work asking for a friend maybe maybe not
You'd have your best shot looking at #find-a-game for finding a group to play with using this server.
Romance will be game/DM/group dependent. Usually the inclusion of romance and the form it takes will be a discussion topic for Session 0. I've personally never heard of a romance-focused campaign, but if that's specifically what you're looking for I assume it'd be harder to find. You may want to seek out narrative-driven or RP-focused tables.
hello! im pretty new to dnd stuff but i wanna get into it any pointers on where to start? do i just like jump in or is it better to watch first?
Glance at the free rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
Have a go at making a starting character (use standard array for ability scores, #character-discussion can help).
Take a look at the games listed in #looking-for-players and see if you can find something that works for you.

Thanks! Iâll look into it
Hello! Iâm new player for dnd! I rather do dnd solo campaign because I have bad timezone but I am free in everyday? Where can I post that I can look for dm if they donât have busy day?
D&D is not designed for solo play (although folks have made adaptations to do so).
Also don't worry about time zones but rather if you are available to play at the time a game is being run.
You might also look for Play By Post games which are text-based D&D games. These games can be a bit more forgiving when it comes to schedules as they are often played asynchronously with no set game time, and usually are more of a "post x times a day" requirement.
Hello everyone! Iâm fairly new to dnd, but Iâve played a few short campaigns. Iâm hoping I can play longer campaigns!
Thank you for having me!!!
If you are looking for a group or game to join, please read #find-a-game carefully as it explains how to use our Looking For Game channels to find a group/game.
How can I post in #looking-for-dm because I want to post it that is that I only want to do is any theme that is fantasy or sci fi if they are interested.
go to looking for game
Follow the information and instructions detailed in #find-a-game but here's the rundown
or just go to looking for players and send a message do the dms
Do you guys know how to make a dnd character in roll20
How exactly do you do the âbetween point A and point Bâ stuff???
Like combat makes sense
Dialogue, roaming and all that
But if they are just going from one place to the next
What do I do?
Itâs my first time dming
describe parts of the journey, maybe they stumble upon something , like a vast river or a cliff or something in between them and their goal
So just describe stuff?
