Me too
It says to post in the "find-a-game" then "you’ll be given a private form to provide the details of your post". I guess I don't know what we are supposed to post or how a form works on here.
Are you trying to be a dm or a player
So it looks like it doesn't matter what you say to the bot under "find-a-game", just reply something, then it pops up with a bot that asks you questions about your game. You answer the questions then submit the post, then it posts it under "looking for players".
I think the easiest way to do that is to make a character on the DNDBeyond website. I believe it walks you through building a character and even levels up, so it should take you to level 4. Once you have done that you can print out the character or even share the URL online.
Thank you. I see that. I wasn't sure what to type to get the prompt to come up but it seems you can type in anything.
I have a campaign and character made on DND beyond

question: when I am creating my character, there is the option to add all of these different items. What is the general rule about how many to pick? Or do I start out with nothing? Same question for gp

Im using dndbeyond, it did give me a set of starting equipment, but it also allows me to add much more from a list.
gotcha! thanks

Do I need to make a character before looking for a game or do make one with a dm?
Hello I'm new to D&D I just bought the players manual today. Amd finished reading the introduction
Generally it works best to build a character with the DMs and playing groups suggestions/feedback so that the character best fits the kind of D&D game/campaign you'll be playing. That said, it's not a bad idea to try your hand at making a character or two just to get to grips with how that works and to better understand the core game concepts and how to use a character sheet.
Tomorrow ill start reading part 1 which is about character creation.
Ok, thanks!
might be a dumb question or in the wrong chat, was Mirror Image a spell before 2024 and if so from which source book? We are trying to stay 2014 and expanded but as a new player I don't know which spells were there before the switch. I understand that it will show legendary if there is a difference in the spell but if the version is the same will it just update the source to the 2024? I see mention of Mirror Image 2yrs ago online so I am confused
Yeah Mirror Image comes from the 2014 PHB
thank you!
So I am brand new to DnD. I got interested due to a friend and now I’m trying to learn as much as possible and learn how to join a group online. What should I start with on learning?

I have a question about components for cantrips, for example:
Minor Illusion:
its components are S, M (a bit of fleece).
Does that mean i need both or a choice between the two to use it? Im assuming both Hand motions along with the fleece to make use of it?
Nvm the PHB says i need all comp, sorry!
Greeting everyone!
I have a ready LVL 1 warlock that I want to use to play a game in DnD, let me know where can I start!!
Make sure to read up on at a focus and component pouches.😉

Do I have to gets a DND book?
Nope, the free rules are enough to get you playing.
You can find those here:

hey people, im playing that dndbeyond where i can create a character and follow a story. I just reached the roll dice part and i did not understand how the sum works
it says that as a paladin, i have +2 of charisma. when i rolled the 20side dice i got an 2
but in the end the message i got was "You rolled 2, +4 is 6 total"
What kind of an action were you trying to take?
why is that? i thought it would be like 2 +2 = 4
let me see
(I like that mini-adventure, but it obscures some things)
Yeah, that's my guess, too.
omg im dumb lmao
"Call out to them to stop fighting. Charisma check using Persuasion (+4)"
so let me see if i get it
based on my base status i sum the value with the option i choose?
sorry if my english is a bit bad, im learning
Persuasion is a Charisma-based skill, and it's one that Paladins can be proficient in. If you're proficient in a skill, you get to add your proficiency bonus to it. From levels 1-4, that proficiency bonus is +2.
So you're adding 2 from the die, +2 for your Charisma modifier (meaning it's a CHA score of 14 or 15), +2 for being proficient in Persusasion.
i think i get it
so in level 5 my proficiency levels up too? like +2 to +4, for example?
or my other status also increase, like strength?
When you have 5 total character levels, proficiency bonus goes from +2 to +3.
That's a little more involved. As a generalization (that has exceptions), every time you gain 4 levels in the same class, you get to choose a Feat. (You'll see people who have been around longer refer to it as an ASI for Ability Score Increase, because it used to be "ASI or Feat". Under the 2024 rules, the ASI is now a Feat you can take more than once.) The ASI Feat lets you increase a single ability score by 2, or two different ability scores by 1 each, to a maximum of 20. Most other Feats let you increase an ability score by 1, and then give some other benefits alongside.
Fighters, in particular, get a few more ASIs than other classes. But the heuristic of "at levels 4, 8, 12, and 16 in the same class" still applies.
hmmm, so it's like points distribution?
They're enough to last you several years actually
The free rules
Plenty of cheap/free 5e material as well
What you add to the die is the ability score modifier (my emphasis). The ASIs affect the actual ability scores themselves. There exists a method for determining the original ability scores known as a Point Buy, too. (I don't recommend that for one's first character for learning curve reasons.)
its a bit confusing for me right now, but i appreciate your help, my friend. I'll try to play some more and understand how it works out slowly. Do you recommend any videos or books to help me learn the basics?
Besides the free rules, check out the Handbooker Helper videos and/or WASD20's Rules School on YouTube.
The videos are based on the 2014 rules rather than the 2024 ones, but the general gist is the same.
ohh tysm mate, im checking out rn
The 2024 rules haven't been in people's hands long enough to get good new stuff made yet, anyway. The current crop of "content" is all focused on what changed in an "optimized for how quickly you can do damage" context.
Grahhhh I just got here and I don't know what to do or say and I'm scared to talk because there's a lot of rules and I read them but aaaaaaaaaaa where should I go is here fine? ;v;

i like my dnd musty bruh
I have played before but it was a while back
and I don't think I ever fully comprehended anything, and the characters were all premade so idk how to make one ~v~ I have a general idea
The demo gives you an idea how it works in practice. The other bot post has links to the free rules, a set of videos done by the Critical Role crew known as "Handbooker Helper" that walk through a bunch of basics (and are still mostly right after the recent new update to the Player's Handbook), and a few other sets of links.
alr, I'm probably gonna look for a mostly vanilla campaign with maybe a sprinkling of homebrew for now so that I can get into it, but I'm gonna look into the stuff you sent first so that I'm not still 90% lost while playing lol

wait wait free base classes??? the game has premium classes?
Forgetting the ranger...
thats really cool although i prefer barbarian/paladin classes in games
what does that guy do
I've heard druids are fairly complex
oh and also is there like something that i should know before playing?
The Free Basic Rules include all of the "traditional" classes, with one subclass option per class. Buying the current player's handbook gives 3 more subclasses per class. Buying a book called Tasha's Cauldron of Everything gives one more class, with 3 subclasses of its own.
The rules of D&D are in rule books. The "free rules" are available online for free, but there are other books that you must access the same way you'd read any novel. You can buy the book online or at a store, or you can rent it from the library, or barrow it from a friend, etc. Its not "premium content" in the same sense as a video game where you have to pay to use it. Its just in a book that's not available online for free

ok sory sorry
oath of vengeance dragonborn? this is some alternative world holy
It didn't work because you put the period at the end
Pure reflex, and I didn't even notice it.
I know the feeling
One of the species available appear to be a mix between humanoids and dragons. They're called, logically enough, Dragonborn. In the Paladin character class, one of the subclasses (not the free one) is known as the Oath of Vengeance.
okay that's certified gangsta right there
I end up working with newer players fairly often, and one of the things that's a fun exercise for established players is figuring out how to represent characters from existing media using D&D mechanics. Sometimes doing it well requires using more than one class, but you can also just use different classes to emphasize different aspects of a character.
To that end, I put this together for a set of illustrations. It's nowhere near complete, but it's a start. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1efuUmEVnpyO0ZVLNwFgMltVHJo5MdVC3-5Cq9PxZKUA/edit?usp=sharing
Hey, im also new and omg this is so cool, thanks!
Glad to help. For what it's worth, the primary tab is for the classes that are in the Free Basic Rules, with all the subclasses in the most recent printing of the Player's Handbook. The "Legacy Subclasses" tab covers everything else - the Artificer class that got discussed a while back, and subclasses for everything else that haven't been reprinted since the newest Player's Handbook last month.
Very cool, thanks! For me its a big help, to see which popular character would fit in which class, so I can learn this way more easier, really cool Idea
Disney-version Cinderella would be a mix of a College of Glamour Bard and an Archfey Warlock.
btw ive never played dnd before and now i have such a big fear, that I would be cringe or weird...
how nice/polite is the dnd Community? Im so sorry i Hope im saying nothing wrong or so
It's just going to depend on the people you play with. I'd say the overwhelming majority of experiences I've had have been positive in the community, but it's just another group of people, and people are complex and varied.
the DND Community is people, with everything that implies.
Same page, Jeff.
In general, I think folks are accommodating because this is essentially playing make-believe, and that can make folks feel vulnerable.
The biggest thing is to be sure that everybody's expectations are aligned. That's the reason behind something called a "session 0" at the start of a new campaign. But a "mid-session 0" doesn't hurt when people are joining existing groups.
where would you guys recommend i start? i'm new to the community and everytime i think i'm starting understand everything someone brings up a new term or something and i have no idea what it means lol 😭 😅

The bot post above has lots of helpful resources to get you started, including a link to the Free Rules
- You could watch some games played on YouTube or Twitch just to see what it's like in action. (Podcasts also work for this purpose.)
- Or play the demo.
- Or read #learn-to-play .
- Or you could read through the Free Rules as mentioned.
- Or you could watch the Handbooker Helper videos (or WASD20's Rules School) on YouTube.
- Or you could sign up for a learn-to-play session through the virtual weekends linked in the server's Events channel.
- Or you can do any/all of these in increments. Read one rules chapter. Watch one explainer video.
Indeed. The only warning I will say is with the larger community (for example, this server), within build discussion / analysis people tend to throw out words like “x is trash” or “x is bad.” It can feel harsh but its never a personal attack on what you enjoy

Basic question / clarification ref 5.5e. When rolling a new character does the player get the number of skill proficiencies they can select in the class traits, Plus the origins skill
Proficiencies? Or does the origins tell the player what skills to select? Thanks
Note Proficiencies. Your background gives proficiency in two skills and with one tool. Record this information on your character sheet.
Your class also gives proficiencies. Check your class description in chapter 3 and note the proficiencies on your character sheet.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/creating-a-character#AbilityScoresandBackgrounds
So it's the proficiencies from both class and background.
Your Background will always give you 2 skill proficiencies, which are determined by which background you pick. Acolyte, for example, will always give you proficiency in Insight and Religion
Your class will provide you with a list of skill proficiencies you can pick from. What is on the list, and how many you get to pick is determined by what class you are playing. A Cleric, for example, can pick 2 from the list of History, Insight, Medicine, Persuasion, and Religion
There are some other ways to get skill proficiencies as well, such as certain species or origin feats, but class and background are the universal ones that all characters will get
Thanks
So just to clarify & double check they get both background skills, plus they get to choose the class skills?
Yep.
Excellent- many thanks

I’m looking at the description of catapult and I can’t see what the dexterity saving throw has to reach, do any of yall know it?
It's a spell, so it uses the save DC of the caster, or if it's some other source the specified DC there.
So a level 1 Wizard with 16 Intelligence casting Catapult has a Save DC of their own
DCs are calculated as 8 + Proficiency Bonus + an Ability Modifier
8 + 2 (proficiency bonus as a level 1 character) + 3 (intelligence modifier, Wizards use Intelligence) = 13.

Heeey im sorry to ask something that might be so blatantly obvious but
Hit points? ive read the PHB but needed a bit more of an understanding as you level up with it.
For example:
level 5 rogue with CON 17 +2
Hit Dice: 1d8 per rogue level
Hit Points at 1st Level: 8 + your Constitution modifier
Hit Points at Higher Levels: 1d8 (or 5) + your Constitution modifier per rogue level after 1st
Does that mean you get 1 extra d8 hit dice as you level?
Or does the "Hit Points at Higher Levels: 1d8" just mean thats how it stays at higher levels?
?tag new hp
Hit Points (HP)
Hit Points are a measure of how difficult it is to kill or destroy a creature or an object. Damage reduces Hit Points, and healing restores them. You can’t have more Hit Points than your Hit Point maximum, and you can’t have less than 0.
Your class and Constitution modifier determine your Hit Point maximum at level 1. Hit Point Dice, or Hit Dice for short, increase your Hit Point maximum when you gain a level. A creature can also spend Hit Dice during a Short Rest to regain Hit Points.
Some spells and other effects confer Temporary Hit Points, which are a buffer against losing actual Hit Points.
Every time you level up in a class, you gain one additional hit dice of that class.
So for your rogue, you'd gain another d8 hit dice.
As to hit points, each time you level up you can either roll the dice and add that roll plus constitution modifier to your hit point pool.
Or you can take the average (the 5 + constitution modifier) and add that to your hit point pool.
ok i see that helped me! thank you very much
Con 17 would be +3
im still trying to remember the modifiers im sorry^^;
Hey we all started new!
And despite playing this game for years, I still mess stuff up or forget things.
As long as you and everyone else playing is having fun, you're doing D&D right.
I had to double check 17 was a plus 3

Feel free to ask any specific questions you have while learning - here or in an appropriate channel (see #channel-guide to see the many channels we have for specific D&D topics).
ok thx
Trying to create my first character for D&D and I was curious to know how deep/long do most players go with a character's backstory.
Some go extremely deep and some are just simple and short, it's all up to what the person wants ngl
Ok, thank you 👍
I'm a big fan of the Three Sentence backstory.
- Where are you from?
- A turning point, like getting your class or a life event.
- Why do you adventure?
Ah! Thank you! That will be easy to follow.
If you want to determine surprise for an encounter, how do you
calculate DEX(stealth) check for a Zombie?
I don't see stealth in the Stat block.
Thank-you
2014, if a creature doesn't have specific +X number for a skill or save on their stat block, then it will simply be a straight ability roll (in this case just dexterity)
Thank-you
Hello eveyone, im new to this community and hope i use the right channel and terminology 👋
I’m gearing up to try my hand at DMing for a group of friends who are new to D&D and tabletop RPGs, and I’d love some advice on what materials to use. I’m trying to decide whether I should dive into 5th Edition (5e) resources or wait for the 2024 edition to come out. I’m likely not starting this campaign until 2025, so I have time to wait if that’s the better choice.
A few specifics about my situation:
**- Player Experience: **None of us have played D&D before, but I’ve played a bit of "Drakar och Demoner"/"Dragonbane" as a player, watched D&D tutorials, and recently started watching the new adventure at High Rollers club with my girlfriend.
- One-Shots to Start: I’m thinking of running some one-shot adventures first to get everyone comfortable with the basics and build my own confidence before diving into a longer campaign.
- Budget Isn’t an Issue: I don’t mind investing in a few books, so if one edition is a lot more beginner-friendly, I’m open to going with that!
- Discord vs. In-Person Play: We’re considering either meeting up in person or running our sessions through Discord. That depends a little on who is joining the group in the end.
Given that we’re all new to D&D, would you recommend starting with 5e, which has a ton of resources and guides already, or holding off for the 2024 edition? I have also understood that a lot of 5e will be compatible with 2024 but since the DM-book has not yet been released i guess we don't know for sure.
They’re both fifth edition. A lot of folks are saying the 2024 rules are more accessible for brand-new players. A downside, as you point out, is there’s not a bevy of content out there yet for 2024, and the full scope of compatibility remains to be seen.
Ok so I'm completely new to DND and I wanna learn how to play, where do I start

Mr. Smith already gave a reasonable answer, but just so you've got another perspective, I advocate what I describe as the "Babylon 5 method" for writing a back story:
- Who are you?
- What do you want?
- Where are you going?
- Why NOW?
To generally concur with Razorwing, they're both 5E. I'd probably suggest getting the current Starter Set (with the Dragons of Stormwreck Isle adventure), and using either the Free Basic Rules of a copy of the 2024 printings Players' Handbook to update the included pregenerated characters. As for Discord vs. In-person, if at all possible I'm going to advocate for your first several sessions being in-person because it's quicker to sort out uncertainties when everybody's learning together, and because I personally find I end up relying on a lot of nonverbal cues to help keep a game moving, which is a lot harder to do on Discord.
Stormwreck Isle is probably ~3-8 sessions of play, depending on how quickly your group accomplishes some of it.
Thanks you @carmine shuttle and @harsh fjord for the answer! I will probably pick up Razorwing since its not too expensive and go from there. Maby read up some more when the 2024 DM-guide releases, i guess that will clear up som questionsmarks how much have changed between the two versions. 🙂
Certain local hobby shops should have the 2024 Dungeon Master's Guide as of the other day. It'll reach big retailers (e.g. chain bookstores) in about 2 weeks.
In building a new character is it considered good practice to start with the backstory of a character and then build the character based on the backstory?
You can go in either direction. I tend to think about key pieces of the fiction first (keeping in mind that I'm rarely going to write more than ~4 sentences about a character's past unless specifically asked to before the first play session), and figure out what mechanical pieces best reflect those. That fiction might even be just a short phrase for myself.
But occasionally, I'll see a mechanical interaction I'm interested in looking at and try to work out where things would go from there.

so can someone ecplain how sharing books work?
?tag ddb contentsharing
Content Sharing
A player or DM with a Master Tier subscription can enable Content Sharing in up to five campaigns. Once Content Sharing is enabled, any content unlocked by anyone in the campaign gets shared with everyone else, and they can use those shared character options for characters in that campaign. Learn more below:
thx
is it permanent or can you do take it away and deleat and remake new campaigns so long it dosnt surpass 5 campaigns and 12 players?
cant find anything about it
A Master Tier subscriber can enable it for up to five campaigns at a time.
If the stop sharing in any of those campaigns, they can start sharing in others until they're back to five.
could somebody possibly help me build my first character?
Sure, are you stuck with questions about how it works, or are you just looking for advice?
im not quite sure how to establish stats well
ive just watched youtube videos but im not quite understanding well
Yeah
?tag new abilities
Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
There's three official ways to do it, described above.
Your DM might want you to use a specific one.
If you don't have a DM yet, I'd go with Standard Array or Point Cost.
Is it an acceptable practice to allow a new player interested in trying D&D to listen in/watch a game from the sideline?
If so I'd love to do that
It's pretty rare to find someone here who would be willing to do that, however....
There's tons of games which stream or are recorded live! Twitch even has an entire DnD category.
10-4. I was hoping that, by watching a game, I could pick up on the etiquette, rules, etc.that a new player might not know.
But yeah, if you just want to spectate, there's tons of options on YouTube or Twitch.
If you're interested in looking into that kind of thing, it's called Live Play. Common household names of groups include Critical Role and Dimension 20.
Does anyone know of someone that's currently trying to host a game?
That’s not something that’s typically done, unfortunately. If people are playing D&D in a public place like a library or game store, they might allow you to watch, though it’d be a little awkward. If people are playing in a private place like someone’s home or online, then they’d really only allow you to be their if you are personal friends with everyone involved.
But like DOSH said, there is LOTS of D&D content on twitch and YouTube that you can watch.

What would be the best class pick for a swordsman?
Also what are saving throw proficiencies?
A classic swordsman would probably be a Fighter
I also really appreciate all of this help truly
Pretty much anyone can use a sword. Some classes will be better at it than others. Some will require you to take a specific subclass. But I’m fairly sure all 13 classes could make a good build around using a sword one way or another
Well like specifically the character I've written is mostly a swashbuckling swordsman who's only true motive is to avenge his family and village who were murdered by an orc gang
The rogue class has a subclass that is actually called “swashbuckler” if that is what interests you
I think a Fighter or Rogue would fit the bill there. Maybe Ranger if you wanted a slightly more complex class.
Would there be anyway someone could call to help me build this character?
thank you so mutch
#character-discussion is for help with making characters
Unfortunately, there's no voice channel on this server. Folks will always be around to offer advice though, both here for basic rules questions and in #character-discussion for actually putting the build together.
Saving throw proficiencies (like all proficiencies) represent your areas of training. Having proficiency lets you add your proficiency bonus to that d20 roll, thereby making you more likely to succeed.
?tag new proficiency
Proficiency
All creatures have a Proficiency Bonus, which reflects the impact their training has on the creature’s capabilities. The Proficiency Bonus table shows your Proficiency Bonus, which is +2 for a level 1 character.
This bonus is applied to a D20 Test when the creature has proficiency in a skill, in a saving throw, or with an item that the creature uses to make the D20 Test. The bonus is also used for spell attacks and for calculating the DC of saving throws for spells.
Your Proficiency Bonus can’t be added to a die roll or another number more than once. Occasionally, a Proficiency Bonus might be multiplied or divided (doubled or halved, for example) before being added.
Hey I’m relatively new to dnd but I know the basic rules and classes my friend said he would be running a premade adventure I can’t recall the name but it’s in water deep and it has heist in the name I was planning on making a abrasive tiefling that has been manipulated into becoming a demon/devil hunter by the humans who kidnapped him when he was young they have given him a ring that they claim is all that is keeping his soul from succumbing to the tired of avernus in reality it is a ring that disguising himself as a human and at some point this ring will break making him have to come to terms with his demonic heritage I was wondering what class could fit this character? (Only the original classes my gm said no homebrews) thanks
Waterdeep: Dragon Heist
"demon hunter" is a pretty open ended concept all things considered. Every class fights things, so any class can hunt demons. You can play anything you want. Choose something where the actual playstyle interests you
I'd allow that at my table, but it's worth noting that characters don't normally start with magic items.
I do have to say though, it sounds like you want your character to start out the game with a magic item. Just so you are aware, that's not within the rules. Magic Items are not part of a level 1 character's starting equipment
So that's something you'll want to discuss with your DM first.
I know he said it was fine as my character is unaware of it and as such can’t abuse it
Then yeah, have fun!
Thanks
Any ideas for Warlock Spells at Level 1 in 2024 rules that feel like a must have?
Depends a bit on what pact you see yourself aiming for. But in general, the guide of “half combat, half utility” works pretty well.
Any tips on roleplaying a character with a phobia?
I'm playing a Autumn Eladrin who has a phobia of the cold
and I was wondering whenever the cold comes up how should I do it a good service
Talk about what if you froze to death. Talk about your clothes not being warm enough. Talk about provisions running out.
Anyone know of a group that specializes in one-shots?

Hey banished. Do you have a VTT picked out yet?
Welcome! You can check the channel pins as well as #learn-to-play for a link to the free basic rules! I recommend watching the Handbooker Helper series by Critical Role which is a great supplement to the rules. While it can be nice to find a DM that is willing to teach newbies, it’s most helpful if you can meet them halfway or further to ease their burden.
Don't worry about memorizing everything, but be familiar with character creation, combat, and skill checks. I also recommend making a character as you go along for rules practice. After that, try finding a game! In this server there's #find-a-game (read the instructions carefully!). Otherwise fellow user iamrazorwing has made a guide to using as many resources as possible to find both in-person and online games.
You can also get feedback on your character in #character-discussion or #optimization depending on the nature of feedback you want. And of course, feel free to ask any additional questions here!
No what’s that
VTT stands for “Virtual Tabletop,” which is generally a website or program that can facilitate D&D. Usually a VTT will be able to host maps, tokens, character sheets, etc. Of course, if you play in person you probably won’t be using a VTT 😅
@foggy forum Have you built a character yet? If you have built a character, let me know and I can teach you how to play over voice chat!
Uhhhhh ok I don’t have a character built yet. I had never played dungeons and dragons before. Sorry for being such a hassle.
You're fine - take your time, look at the free basic rules, try your hand at making a character, watch folks playing D&D on YouTube/Twitch, and then join a group and play D&D with them.
You don't have to know everything to start playing - I'd recommend learning how a character sheet works, how to make attack rolls, ability checks, and saving throws (d20 test), and the different dice and how they are often used.
?tag new dice
Dice
Dice add randomness to the game. The 20-sided die (d20) is the most important one you’ll use. When the outcome of an action is uncertain, the game uses D20 Tests to determine success or failure. The higher your roll, the more likely it is that you succeed. The most common use for dice other than the d20 is to determine damage.
When you need to roll dice, the rules tell you how many dice to roll of a certain type, along with any numbers to add or subtract. For example, “3d8 + 5” means you roll three eight-sided dice, add them together, and add 5 to the total.
How did you become interested in the game?
It always sounded like something I would love to try and some thing I could get obsessed with playing easily
That's great! D&D (and tabletop games in general) is a massive community with a lot of variety within it! You should definitely take the advice that others have given you, but the biggest thing I can say at the moment is to find a group that accepts new players, be friendly and positive, and if you run into an issue you can't resolve with the group you're in, you can always just move on and find another.
It's super easy to feel overwhelmed because, tbh, it is a really big game. Just take it one step at a time, and do what's fun for you in the moment! A lot of people really enjoy D&D "Actual Play" (games played and recorded as a show) Series, and those can be a really awesome way to see how the game is played from an outside perspective. Or, if you'd rather just play the game than watch it, read up a little bit on the rules (enough to get an idea of the game) then start looking for groups. Many groups will ask you to bring a character sheet, so do your best to put one together, come back here and ask questions as needed, and then get to playing!
Hello I’m new to dnd and I want to understand more about rouge and its subclass Assassin so I can use the, more proficiently

The Assassin subclass won’t be in the Free Rules. Instead, it’ll be in the PHB which you’d have to either pay for or have another way to access it (i.e. a friend, your local library)
what do you guys focus on ability points for paladin? 16 str and 16 cha?
only way i found to do this is with noble background
i dont think theres other background with + in both str n cha
By "background" are you referring to races?
Also, are you looking at the 2014 or 2024 ruleset?
This might be a stupid question, but I how do I get into dnd?
I’ve looked for apps on the App Store and websites to play dnd campaigns with others but I couldn’t find anything but dnd beyond
Which just helps me keep track of my characters

sorry 2024 and no back ground not species
damn my english, i meant the background of the character where you get to choose +2 / +1 ability scores
Ah, I'm afraid I can't help you then. I'm not sure if it made it into 2024, but in the 2014 rules ability bonuses are determined by race, and as of Tasha's Cauldron of Everything you're free to apply the ability score bonuses to whichever ability scores you like. So for instance, if you're a Tiefling you could take the +1 to Intelligence and +2 to Charisma as described in the PHB, or you could give yourself +2 to Strength and +1 to Charisma.
yea they changed that in PHB 2024 its according to your background now
Hi
Just looking through the new PHB, it looks like the Entertainer gets to assign ability scores to Strength, Dexterity, and Charisma.
Hello!
oh shi u right i must be blind
ah but.......its so not my character....roleplay wise XD
so its kinda weird that he is this guy who has a entertainer background haha
What if Aletheo's struggle with societal rejection led him to being a musician, who expresses his angst through song?
Hello everyone I’m searching 3 players and A good Dm to do a campaign for beginner friendly players
Dm me a text if anyone is interested!
Like, what if your character is basically the lead singer of My Chemical Romance but also a paladin?
ohhh
XD dude thats so hilarious
so hes basically the emo dude that turned to music
omg can you imagine, multiclass to a bard and he has a guitar for a sword
Yeah man, go hog wild! If you want to do something mechanically, but you feel like the flavor doesn't quite match up, there's usually an even more fun option if you look for it.
il have to ask my DM
btw what do you think which subclass do i go for
stick to vengeance or to smthin else
im the main tank in the team
If you're a new player I wouldn't stress too much about picking the "right" subclass. You have an idea that a Paladin fits well into the tank role in general, so as long as you're making solid choices in game and put points in the right attributes you'll be a solid tank.
Do what sounds the most fun for you and your character, in other words.
Yeah that's a solid spread, should be fine!
yo
i join a long time ago yet im still a new can someone pls help me i wanna join a fren group or soemthing

New to DnD!
Tell me newcomers. What is the backstory of the character you've been making?
It would probably be better if you asked this question in #character-discussion I know you want to ask newcomers specifically, but that’s still off-topic for this channel
Hi everyone, I’m here to see if anyone could give me some tips (and maybe some feedback on the story) for dming as I’m doing it for the first time on a story I’ve made myself and I’m struggling to give it a dnd feel and not a novel of sorts. Anyways thanks!
?dmtips
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
The bot post above has some great starting tips. If you'd like to have a more detailed discussion about DMing, then you can go to the #dm-discussion channel and get advice from fellow DMs there
Amazing thanks a lot!
Is the 2024 phb worth getting?
Have you played D&D before and already like it, or would you be trying it for the first time?
Either way, I’d still say yes.
I would say use the Free Rules first, and if you want to invest money, then the PHB is the key book to grab.

hiii
ive been told to just read the free basic rules first then learn fully about character creation and gameplay
See the bost post a few lines up!
hi how are you
Whats the difference between normal DnD and 2024? And which is more prevalent?
By normal D&D, do you mean the 2014 rules?
Depends on what you mean by "normal". 😅
my bad i guess i mean e5? idk i know 2024 is not the same as far as i know but idk to what extent
If you mean the difference between the fifth-edition Player's Handbook released in 2014 and the fifth-edition Player's Handbook released in 2024, it's not fundamentally any different.
It's all fifth edition either way.
They're both 5th edition, but the new rules are tweaked in some ways. I'd agree with Umee that 2014 is likely more widespread because the new rules have only been out for about two months, and not everyone is an early adopter.
But they've essentially taken the lessons learned over the last ten years and given the current edition a refresh.
The 2024 PHB came out in September of this year, so its still fairly new. Its still considered to be 5th edition, and it just exists as a update to the old rules, to try to make them feel more modern and fresh. Its still fairly new, so not everyone has switched over yet, but its intended to be the new norm
If you're brand new to the game, I think the 2024 PHB is the best place to start.
Agreed. Heck, even if you intend to play the 2014 rules still, the 2024 rules "how to play" section is fantastically written
ahh sorry sorry when i asked a friend they made it sound like it was 2 different things but i see what everyone means now thank you so much!
That's good to hear. I haven't given the new rules a read because I'm not planning to use them, but I'm sincerely glad that it's a better onboarding experience for new folks!
They are different enough that you need to specify which one you are using in a conversation about the rules or character creation or something like that. But in actual play, they feel surprisingly similar. The primary thing that changed is just character creation options. The actual core rules of the game and pace of play and such are largely the same
Wait so are they two different things or is the 2024 one just an updated version of 2014
2024 is like a remaster of 2014
its essentially the same game but there a lot of small details which differ
Ive been using roll20 to make a character and the options it has was the "Dungeons & dragons" and "Dungeons & dragons 2024" and i tried making a chara through 2024 yesterday and it just felt so quick and smooth haha
It might seem like an incredibly small detail, but even just the fact that in the new book chapter 1 is how to play and chapter 2 is how to make a character is such a great change. The book just flows so much better that you don't need someone to guide you through it the same way you did with the 2014 rules

Don't worry, most games are not paid games - and you can play D&D just fine with the free basic rules

theres that for you gents
If you want more than what’s in the Free Rules, there’s plenty of books available.
There’s books with more rules, more character options, more monsters…
Adventures to play through, worlds to explore…
Huh???! Paid rules?
I mean the company that owns D&D does need to pay the folks who write up the rules, pay for the artists, pay for the printing of physical books and the servers hosting digital books, etc.
So yeah, there is paid material if you want to add more to your D&D experience then what's just in the free basic rules.
Like the Players Handbook gives you more class options to use with your character beyond what you get in the free rules.
You could play forever with just the Free Rules.
If you want more, it’s there.
It’s basically DLC.

uh so. how do i make character because i dont understand a thing from the website 😤
What are you having trouble understanding, and what website are you looking at?
everything and im looking at the dnd guide website or whatever it is
You select a race, background and class
OK, so when you say you're having trouble understanding everything, that makes it difficult to figure out how to help. Here are some examples of more specific questions you could ask:
- "There are so many steps to character creation, I'm wondering if someone can break it down into more simple steps."
- "I'm trying to use the character builder at <link> and it's asking me what sources I should use, but I don't know what to pick."
i honestly went as specific as possible but ykw ill try a different question
in the character creation on dnd beyond theres like a lot that i didn't understand how it works or what it meant, ill put it up now
or not i cant log in for some reason
ncm
nvm
Since your DM is kinda tired lol fill up some gaps like race, background etc and I will flesh it out
ok so dumb question (all of them are going to be dumb) but whats fighter proficiancy
Proficiency with weapons mate

Fighters are proficient in all Simple and Martial weapons; Light, Medium, Heavy Armor and Shields; and get proficiency in Strength and Constitution saving throws.
The stuff that fighters get is summarized here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/character-classes#CoreFighterTraits
theres like, acrobatics, insight, intimidation stuff like that

Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
a rating of how good your attributes are, where 1 is basically the minimum, 10 is an average joe, 20 is the peak of an adventurer regularly, and 30 is the absolute maximum for even the avatar of a god.
3rd dumb question, what do i put in lifestyle
Istg a DM kicked me because he rejected my homebrew and i accepted it with the smallest curse in history that is allowed on this server
Whatever you feel like
That isn't necessarily a critical part of a character sheet. Once you have a DM, talk to them about if it's even necessary to put that down
Our DM is kinda useless here
What?
Sometimes a DM and player group isn't a good fit.
Does that... have anything to do with what I said...?
Then kicked me because he didnt like my homebrew
All i am saying is that he is useless for the next 3 days
Organizing a group to play D&D takes time and effort and often schedules and personalities and communication styles don't mesh.
Again, does that have anything to do with what I said
He wont help with character creation mate
That isn't the only DM that exists for the entire game
I said "once you have a DM, ask them"
you're talking about a singular DM you had some kind of experience with
Lifestyle usually isn't important, but some campaigns focus more heavily on downtime where your daily spending might be tracked. If you're not sure you can put Modest
We have the same DM here.
Or had
ok also, i picked dragonborne for my race and im picking what type, what does it mean by like "5 by 30 ft line" or whatever
it means a line that is 5 feet wide and 30 feet long
Thats your walking distance mate
Oh alr
No they are referring to the dragonborn's breath weapon ability
That's the area of effect that your breath weapon covers. If you're playing on a grid you can use that to figure out how many creatures you can hit when you use it
so it's one thin but decently long line of that element
or if you pick a dragonborn kind that has a cone, well, it's a cone
That's super subjective, I don't think there is a consensus best class
There's no one best starting class as all of them have some kind of gimmick that someone may or may not find to be difficult or easy to grasp
Bard is on the complicated side so if you're a newer player and looking for something simple you might have an easier time with a class like Fighter or Rogue
Bard is a full caster, great for conversations and an absolute beast with anything be it magic sword or bows
But if you're willing to give it a shot bards can be a lot of fun as well
some people will breeze right through how a rogue's sneak attack works, some still ask questions 10 years later
Same with barbarian rage, spellcasting in general, especially warlock pact magic slots, etc
Bard/Rogue is another dimension of fun
?tag new complexity
Class Complexity
Below is a quick overview of which classes take the most effort to learn. Low complexity classes make for an easier starting point, while higher complexity classes offer more versatility. Any of these classes can be played by beginners, so pick whatever excites you!
whats a gaming set
but yeah for example, Bard has a kind of identity as much more of a 'control and support' thing. They have very little in the way of direct damage, outside of subclass gimmicks.
Like a chess board and pieces
Counterpoint: Swords Bard level 3
something like dice, cards, or dragonchess. It's unlikely to be a critical piece of the game, but proficiency would basically be... if you make a check to play the game, prof in it
Like a chess set or playing cards - stuff that you would use to play a game
Wait did i piant myself as a fool here
I said.
Subclass. Gimmicks.
Damn sorry bout that
Also you don't need to keep pinging me, I am already here :P
I dont know how to disable it in a reply
Did it work?
Yeah that's how you do it
Cool
👍
ay could i send my character to one of you guys and you say whether its fine or not
ill send it to you if thats fine
As a fighter, you'll want either your Strength or Dexterity to be high, so you can use Weapons, your class's forte.
You'll want a good Constitution in order to be tougher to kill.
Make sure to equip your gear.
What kind of fighter do you want to be?
i heard something about an eldrich fighter, idk if it even exists but if it does then i wanna be that because it sounds cool
That would be the Eldritch Knight subclass
I've got a Halloween themed session later today! I'm so excited!
I would recommend going with a either a Dexterity build (needing only Dexterity, Constitution, and Intelligence) or a Strength build (needing only Strength, Constitution, and Intelligence).
That way you're not splitting your focus into 4 stats.
Strength can wield bigger weapons, and wear better armor and be more likely to have a higher AC, while Dexterity lets you use ranged weapons effectively and have a better time dodging most effects such as Fireballs.
sure
ill go with strength because if elden ring taught me anything, strength is goated no matter the situation
big sword is big funni
exactly
As a samurai main, i feel betrayed
also your enemies seeing you with a big sword, in heavy armor
and then you cast spells
ay look main game i went dex, but dlc hurt a lot
honestly terrifying imo
I recommend mixing in some levels of swords bard for way better spells and melee tricks
But you do what you do king
splitting between four stats is ill-advised
Almost impossible
I generally wouldn't recommend multiclassing if you're new to the game. Focus on learning your class/subclass.
As you get into D&D more and want to try and create a specific kind of character build, then look into multiclassing.
But as a newcomer, I'd avoid that for now.
Eldtrich knight is basically the Witcher build
Pure fighter is op
it just sounds cool i love it
Fighter is basically boom i hit you. Boom i hit you twice. Boom i hite you thrice
Be sure to pick up GWM for your melee
It means how much damage you can produce out of a dice
The number before D is the dice number
3d6 = roll 3 d6 dice and sum up the result
ohh ok ok
How much is yours?
my melee is 2d6-1 and my breath is 2d6
Why the -1? Your stats are probably dogwater
They focussed on dex over strength
It's fine
But if they want a better melee attack, they could rethink how they allocated their scores and bump up strength
Then makw sure to use finesse weapons
We still set up for that session today @dnd should be free
I'm new to DnD, and didn't know there was a 2024 update. Will I have to change my character sheet that I made a few years ago?
@velvet jetty we still going to play tonight
huh
Take this to DMs or #find-a-game , this isn’t the channel to organize games with other people
Only if you want to or your group is switching to the 2024 ruleset
Not necessarily! Some groups aren't transitioning to use the new rules, so if your group doesn't use them there's no need to change. Even if you are playing in a group using the 2024 rules, you can still play a 2014 character and it will work fine with the rest of the characters. However, most classes got helpful updates with the 2024 rules so if your group is using them you might end up with a stronger/more fun character if you switch
oh ok cool, thanks
How do y’all find people to form party’s with ?
Rs
What?
😭
I have never once played, even though I have been interested in the game for 1 or 2 years
Me neither
Where are you from ?
I am from Sweden
There really should be a platform to help us find players near us
For me its not important if its online or in person, I just want to try the game to see if its worth finding a group near me
I would prefere in person but I just really want to try
What about you?
Portugal
Cool

Hi all, where is the 2024 moon druid in character creation? I see it in my 2024 digital rules book, and I have a legacy moon druid already. But it's not a druid subclass option in cc.
@inner plover It shows up in my subclass options in the character creator
Hello
I wanna get into my first campaign but don't know much abt how to play
I have read the starting stuff and made a character but idk how to rlly get started
Perhaps you could clarify, by not knowing about how to play do you mean the rules of the game or how to find a group? If the latter then great! I would head to #find-a-game for help finding a group to play with using this server
If you need to know how gameplay actually works, there are lots of good youtube videos that explain it and where you can see it played. If you just look up How to Play D&D you'll find a million people explaining it.
Hey
lol ive been reading the messages! Have you gotten yourself a DM yet?
Forgot to say hi in my first day

Does any1 mind helping me make a character? Or like get the basics down w it? I dint know what class is good for what racw or anything
I want a character to go in2 club with so i dont have to choose a premadd, i also dont esnt 2 look stupid
But i dont have the first clue on how 2 play
Other than like you roll stuff and its a lot of rng?
(thats not my perception on it all tats just all my brain is capable of explaining)
All i know is i want a tabaxi (the cat anthro)
As for class/race combo, any combination is ok. No class is particularly tied to one race and vice versa. Tabaxi won’t be in the Free Rules but it will be in various sourcebooks, such as Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse
Every class is good if you know how to build it well, and race yea some races are better suited for some classes but in the end race is all up to you in the end of what you would like to be.
NAURRRRR not paid dlc!
I joined my highschools dnd club 9 weeks in and i dint wanna look stupid
Just be honest with them that you're new and they should be willing to show you the ropes
And how to create a character along with backstory and class.
I just want some1 2 walkthrough me on how to make a character
Cause i dont understand most of these thingd on dndbeyond
Not ywt anyways
Honestly I probably would be bad at explaining dnd beyond character creating
Yeah I would just go through the Free Rules bit by bit
They’ll explain most of what DDB ‘s character creator spits at you

how bad is 8 charisma
Cheeseburger\10
Glad I could provide my infinite wisdom
Not the worst, unless you happen to be a class that uses it for spells (Cleric, Paladin, Bard, Warlock) 😛
But you're probably not gonna be the one that manages to persuade or lie to people 😏
say i was planning on making a character that tried to persuade monsters to not attack, like "THIS ISNT YOU" but failed miserably every time
would 8 charisma be enough
Well not many ways to get it lower if that's your goal 😛
thank you 😛
So is the goal of the character to use their action to fail checks? Or are you contributing to combat in other ways?
Any charisma score would work as long as you aren’t casting Calm Emotions
DM probably won’t let you roll in most circumstances
In general yeah 8 Charisma isn’t going to succeed very often, on top of a DM letting you try to talk to a monster in the first place
what if i use like "speak with animals" or "Comprehend languages"
do you think i could ask very nicely
If you can speak the language / have the ability to speak to beasts, then yeah you could, but it probably only increases your odds due to being easier to understand
Sure it’d help but the DM still has final say. If your point is to fail I feel most DMs would probably not call for a roll unless it has serious and unfortunate consequences.
thanks 😋
Gotta say, not really a common thing (Well, I guess I do hear often enough people wanting to play a character like that) to play a character with a goal of failing things 😛
But one of my players played a character with a terrible sight, but just making them outright blind would be very bad idea, so how we did that was their perception checks relying on sight were at a disadvantage. You could maybe ask your DM for something like that, maybe with an explanation of why the character is bad at the persuasion 😛
Newer to D&D in general, and first time DM.. .starting cmapaign soon!
Going to create a new character for Tier 1 play now that my initial one has gone into tier 2. Wanted to know if there were any tips on figuring out a charcater's background and appearance. For the latter, I am just unfamiliar with what each species can look like, but for the former while I could probably come up with some sort of origin or story it feels a bit awkward to say they grew up in some nameless town, wandered a nameless area or trying to defeat some nameless enemy/person. Basically I would like to know how other people handle the details of character background. The 2024 guide offers some good advice, but I am still curious how more experienced players tend to go about it.
Good question for #character-discussion - this channel is more for helping new to D&D folks get started with core game rules and mechanics.
Thanks!
Hi everyone, I'm very new to DND, never played a game before and wanted to get started in it. was looking to see where I could get some help
Welcome! #learn-to-play has some good started info, but were you looking for a specific kind of help?
Any questions we can answer?
not really, just seen a bunch of people play the game and was interested in getting started in it
Im brand new and well what is a session 0
It’s typically a get together of all the players + DM before the start of the campaign to accomplish a few goals:
- Set expectations & tone
- Set boundaries
- Introduce the campaign setting and/or any homebrew rules
- Create characters (optional)
Oh ok thank u
Do y’all know where I can play a game as a brand new player

Is first game ever as a DM a bad idea 🤔
New to DnD and not sure how to play a Druid
Hello, relatively new to DND only started getting into it a few months ago
You definitely can start D&D by jumping straight into DMing. It tends to be a little harder but it's certainly doable
And it's the easiest way to make sure you find a group 😁
Hey, I was just curious. Is it OK to make your character the opposite sex?
quick question, when your trying to find a game in one of the hashtag thing and you find one your interested, is the person tagged above the posting the DM im suppose to message if im interested?
If you're in the looking for players channel, they should be iirc
Yeah, whoever was tagged by Monodrone should be the person who posted the request
iirc? 😅
If I Recall Correctly = iirc
ah, thank you
Yes, that
Sry, but im still confused on what im suppose to do exactly. 😭
from the #find-a-game i go to #looking-for-players where I see DM's looking for players to join. How do i show interest is it through the server or private message?
I'd probably post in the thread attached to the listing as the default option. If the post says to DM them, do that instead
Oh I see it now, i didnt even see the thread extension part lowkey. Im blind, thank you tho!
Hey same here except only a few weeks ago lol. Gonna keep studying up a bit so I don't slow anyone down and then try and hop into my first campaign
Hello, I have never played a single game of dnd and don’t know much about it but I am a really big warhammer fan and play it a lot I’m trying to figure out how to get started and find game groups but unfortunately idk where to start and not a lot of teenagers wanna play d&d so if anyone has any advice please lmk anything will help.
For online play, theres https://discord.com/channels/516367331358801950/1070720656917938227 and https://discord.com/channels/516367331358801950/750813601358676008 In person play, there's stores thatll let groups play there, like HobbyTown, USA. I've also seen them a lot at smaller local comic and gaming stores.
Another question, what should I buy as someone who wants to be a player in d&d
Like what do I need for my sessions and stuff
The Free Rules and a set of dice are all you really need to get started.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
I mean technically you can also use Digital dice apps or even google. But i would not deprive any new player of the joy of rolling real dice
Also is baldurs gate 3 a good way to get into d&d? Was thinking of buying it
i chose a level 0 feature that allowed me to learn two cantrip and one level 1 spell i chose the caintrip eldritch blast from a player recomendation and toll of dead but the later one is the key as the dm rules we start at level 5 so as echo knight i can have extra attack action surge manifest echo and unleash incarnation my question is if i can attack two extra attacks with the echo and four attacks with me does anything stops me to spam eldritch blast 4 times on my turn and 2 times with echo doing 12 1d10 damage since the this spell ate level five allows me to cast two blastes for attack?
can someone help me with this?
it's derived from DND, but it takes a ton of creative and adaptive liberties.
None of those let you cast Eldritch Blast multiple times.
You either use your action to cast Eldritch Blast, or you use your action to take the Attack action.
yeah but i have 3 extra actions because of my extra turn and action surge
You could either take the Attack action, and as a 5th level fighter, make two attacks, and as an Echo Knight, use Unleash Incarnation to make one additional attack from your echo's position
or, you take the (2014: Cast a Spell action / 2024: Magic action) action to cast Eldritch Blast.
You don't have three extra actions.
Also, you can't "cast two blasts for an attack".
i send it on your dms the thing me and the dm are guiding for
The cantrip upgrade for eldritch blast is for when you cast it
To cast it, you have to use an entire action to cast it
Extra Attack, and being an Echo Knight, does not grant you extra actions.
It just makes your action, when you take the Attack action, give you more attacks. It makes it more efficient.
what about a mele atack can i do attack mele the bonus action the do the extra action the attack again with a mace then use action surge the attack with the shadow 2 times?
As a Level 5 Fighter (Echo Knight) whose Origin Feat granted Eldritch Blast (somehow)
You can either
Take the Attack action. You get to make two weapon attacks, like swinging a sword or shooting with a bow. You can also use Unleash Incarnation to make one additional weapon attack, from your Echo's position.
Take the Cast a Spell (with 2014 rules) or Magic (with 2024 rules) action. to cast Eldritch Blast, and get two beams.
What?
"What about a melee attack can I do attack melee the bonus action the do the extra action the attack again with a mace then use action surge the attack with the shadow 2 times"...?
I have no idea what you mean here
like withe mele weapons like morning star do 4 actions of mine the more two as the shadow?
You can't get Four Actions.
btw check dms for my feat
Please keep it to here
attack actions my bad
ok can i copy paste the description?
You have One Action. Very important distinction.
The only time you can get an additional one is by the Haste spell, with a very specific restriction, or via Action Surge, which is a very limited resource.
Extra Attack (and Unleash Incarnation) let you make additional attack rolls when you take the Attack Action.
It does not grant you extra attack actions, it does not grant you extra actions.
And as for any rules you need to quote, simply post the text that's relevant (mods might have their eyes out for posting too much of paid rules)
(but anything from the Free Rules are fair game)
wdym paid rules?
Rulebooks that cost money
oh ok
Things like Tasha's Cauldron of Everything or Mordenkainen's Monster of the Multiverse - publicly posting full pieces of content is a no-no.
Stuff from the Basic Rules (2014) / Free Rules (2024) are fair game, as they're completely free to view for anyone, so post all you need to from there.
For paid content, mods appreciate it if quoted content is limited to specifically discussion-relevant-portions.
ok my bad i dint know sorry for that
Basically, you can quote the snippets of what's relevant, but posting the entire echo knight subclass would be unnecessary :P
is players hand book paid?
yes, but the free rules are, well... free
ok because im looking at content from there in a public page i dint know until now that was against the comunity rules do you want me to report the page for the mods?
Let's get back to the topic on hand
yes sir
So, you were asking what you could do, as a Level 5 Fighter, Echo Knight, and with the ability to cast Eldritch Blast, right?
yeah but now i know that i can only use it for the cost of a action time
You can either
1: Cast Eldritch Blast, getting two beams, thus making a total of two spell attack rolls.
2: Take the Attack action, making up to two weapon attacks from your position, your Echo's position, or a combination in either order.
2a: also use Unleash Incarnation, to make one additional weapon attack from your Echo's position.
And with 2024 rules (I assume you're on those, as you got an Origin Feature)
Action Surge
You can push yourself beyond your normal limits for a moment. On your turn, you can take one additional action, except the Magic action.
Once you use this feature, you can’t do so again until you finish a Short or Long Rest.
You could use Action Surge to take the Attack action, in example 2, and even use unleash incarnation on that as well, as in example 2a.
All making more sense now?
i saw it what about using action surge for the 3 attack and then be 3 attack for my main and one from the echo?
3 attacks how so? Are you using the Light weapon property to get an additional attack?
im using a morningstar. but idk if its considered heavy light or avarage
a Morningstar does not have the Light property.
ok so only two?
But in that case, where are you getting 3 attacks from you and from your Echo's position?
Important clarification, your Echo doesn't do things itself. It's a special effect for you to do things with.
1 for echo and 2 for me?
You can make two attacks with your Attack action, whether they come from your position, the echo's position, or one of both
and then get one additional attack from unleash incarnation, that has to be from the echo's position
And then you can use Action Surge to take the attack action a second time on your turn, and do that again
That is possible, yes
thats what i wanted thank you so mutch im clarifed now thanks for your patiense
Yep, and eldritch blast is a spell which is its own whole can'o'worms, and is not interchangeable with individual weapon attacks
yeah its a two edge knife
But yes, Echo Knight is indeed pretty cool. The funniest part is when you gang up on someone and attack them from two places on the same turn
my bad
i was going to send a funny gif but it seems i cant oh well i have a short question now can i spar with my shadow to train in terms of narrative?
As the saying goes, "Flavor is free.", but you can't innately expect to gain mechanical benefits out of it. As you said, it's a narrative thing, a piece of flavor for the game.
As the rules go, the echo doesn't do anything. It's just an echo of an alternate timeline of you.
Anything like talking with an alternate you, or sparring with it, is down to the DM's discretion.
ok thanks for the awnsers im going to sleep now good night evryone
👍
Hi. was told I could find online groups for DND to join here.
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:

what is homebrew?
think of it like community-made Mods for a videogame.
They can be as simple as balance adjustments, or as crazy as entirely new classes or subclasses.
And just like mods, it's better to know what you're doing with the game before you start plugging it full of mods/homebrew
so could a player introduce them, DMs? what's the consensus?
It's always down to the DM. Imagine if the game engine was sentient and could just say no to someone modifying a sword so it does 99999 damage.
Or otherwise "lore unfriendly" mods, such as adding modern cars to a gritty demon hunting adventure.
so players couldn't suggest their own custom races, got it
Well, they could, it's just down to the DM whether they accept it or not, which is influenced by it being balanced and/or lore friendly.
A player could request the DM allow a homebrew species of the Skaven, it's down to the DM whether they would allow Skaven to exist in their game and if a player can play as one
wtf are the skaven? are they like a DND exclusive species because I've genuinely never heard of them
Wait till you hear about dwelf
Warhammer race. Devious ratfolk.
Helloooooooo I'm yumi new to dnd don't know where to start I just heard this stuff is fun to play don't know how it works or play bit I happily like to try this stuff I want to learn more about it :>
You should check this out then.
Mmmm R E A D I N G Oki doki
Just let me warn you that the mods don't like people "advertising" their games in these channels.
ooh sure
Oh cool
My discord is awfully slow
Just a quick question
How does every role works I know some does know some idk how it does like paladin and stuff. _.
I'm pretty sure that thing I replied to explains all of the classes. Unless you're talking about the Discord roles?
Ooh oof sorry sorry
Paladins have made a promise so deep that it flows through their body as divine energy. Their each attack is empowered by Justice
A crude explanation but yes, it's kinda this. Though paladins aren't always warriors of justice. Some might be morally gray or outright evil.
It’s ripped out of bg3
Hello! I'm sorta returning to dnd after not playing for about 6 years, and I honestly feel like I need a refresher because I now feel very new to dnd….if that makes sense! I just wanna know how everything works here lol
Soo in dnd I can create whatever character I want right as long it's not too cringey or straight up bs
Right?
You can just be a wheel of Parmesan cheese if you want to
Less gooo
Yes, but many groups won't enjoy having a silly character like that in their squad.
I am completely fine to yall being something so outrageous. It’s funny
Speak of paladin this kinda mess with my head a bit is it possible to make a paladin but the lore is that it turned rogue against a false oath and planned to take down a false order by being a rogue paladin? Or that's just a black knight?
That’s an Oathbreaker. You can go ahead with a Paladin sworn to the government then break the oath and overthrow it.
Sounds like a weapon name lol OATH BREAKER SLAYER OF PALADINS
Just remember, a grim fate will Wait for you in the after life
Yes, but keep in mind that every game has limits. For example, as a paladin you can't grow angel wings and fly into the sky. Unless you pick a flying race or reach a certain level in a specific subclass.
Don't worry I don't like make op character anyway
I rather be a vampire hunter mouse than a gacha life character
And you can completely make your own classes and races. I am fine with homebrew
Only if your DM allows it.
Cool. Because the next campaign will be based on vampires
Then I shall name em JERRY
Sounds catchy I love it
DND beyond

It's just the 5th edition of d&d
What's different between all edition
Everyone plays on 5e and some say 3e is better
Each edition has its own flavor and rules. 4th was basically video gamey
Basically
Do 5e
Pooh flavor does it taste good
5e is the best place for newbie to start
Alrighty
Brand new to not only D&D, but Discord as well.

Help me! I'm new to Dnd yet I still tried to make a character and don't know if it's okay
Send me your character sheet
Ok
If you're unsure about the sheet, you could send it over and I can give some notes.
If you're unsure about the character concept, try #character-discussion
I am waiting
Please, notes would be appreciated because I honestly don't know what I'm doing
If you wanna send me a DM with the sheet, I'll look over it?
I sent it

Idk how to hehe
#learn-to-play and check the free basic rules - there's a chapter in there specifically going over the steps to creating a character.
Uhmm so can I not be the dungeon keeper? Or I have to?
How do I start a group with a dm and a few players, I’m lost
Finding a game can always be one of the biggest hurdles at first.
There's the find a game channels here, and also other places- r/lfg on reddit, the game finders on VTT platforms like roll20's looking for group, so on.
In person also check for local facebook groups or check to see if meetup.com has any. Local game stores are a big one to check out, even if to ask if they know of local groups if they don't host.
or kidnapping friends and playing a oneshot with them.
It can take some time, and one of the first big hurdles. It's a bit like online dating. You are going to spend multiple hours a week (usually) with these people, so you want to make sure you all vibe well, and it can take time to find or make that.
Also sadly some online groups are a bit flakey.
Looking into oneshots, Adventure League and westmarches (feel free to ask what these are) can be a good way to join lower commitment games and see if you find people whose play style clicks with yours, and then you slowly network and form a group together from recommending each other to games.
Or you can be lucky and hit it off with the first group you join.
Communication is a key part of all of this and session 0s and chatting with the DM before joining can be a good way to feel out if you all suit each other before committing to a game.
hey im new to dnd and ive never made a character or anything of that sort is there any way someone can help em get started becsuse i am a bit lost currently

can a paladin make an offering to a god they are not aligned with for exampled if my god i chose was arcana magic and history would it go against me to make an offering to the earth god if im a paladin oath of the ancients?
Unless it counts as blasphemy in your tenets then yes
There's no general rule against making offerings to other gods. In general Forgotten realms lore at least seems pretty polytheistic, so you make an offering to whichever god covers what you're currently doing
Even if you have one primary god you focus on
Hi. I have a question. I'm going to buy the 2024 phb digital version soon, is all the stuff like subclasses going to unlock automatically on my dnd beyond account?
All the subclasses in the 2024 PHB will. Older subclasses/spells/etc will only unlock with buying the books they’re in.
It used to be possible to buy things piecemeal, but that was nixed a couple-three years back.
👍
Is there anywhere in Birmingham I can start playing preferably in city center
Probably. Check your local game shops and hobby stores, look for board gaming cafes and Facebook groups.
Libraries oft have dnd groups too
Im super new to dnd so im to scared to be creative with character creation because im not so sure about the limits of creativity 💔
Look over the options for species and classes; those are some of the major limits on what you can be (especially in terms if what your character can do). Beyond that, it’s up to the group you play with for what is/isn’t acceptable. More or less.
Okayyy tysm c:
Thanks 😊
does the digital copy of the players hand book look just like the paper handbook? as far as the pages and illustrations etc?
like the artwork also
It has artworks, etc. A good example of what the DnDBeyond digital version of the PHB would look like is the free rules here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
Ty
when i roll dice for my attributes like dexterity can i have a value over 20
If you’re rolling for stats then no, using the official method gives a range of 3-18
The only limit here is your imagination. For all the rules care about, you could just be a sheep that kills god in their spare time
Personally I would not say that there aren’t any limits. The rules clearly define the lines you have to work in, changing them (i.e. playing as a sheep, killing deities) would almost always be homebrew and therefore outside of the default intentions of the game’s design. In essence- it would require a lenient DM willing to change stuff about the game
Hey:) I just joined, how I'm join to campaigns and play?😅
First, thank you! Second I already know how to play and I'm watch critical role, but thanks for the guidance though!
We have a slot open
Can you send me the theme and story and thing I need to know?
In dm ofc
We are running some modules before I finish my original story line
can i have my character wear striped pajamas with a sleeping cap
idk if this would be better in the character discussion channel
That would likely fall under you wearing common clothes as described in the Free Rules / PHB. From a gameplay perspective it should be fine depending on what class you play, such as Wizard or Sorcerer who don’t get armor proficiency. If you’re playing a martial class or get armor proficiency in some manner, you’ll probably want to stack some armor on top of your clothes.
From a narrative perspective I would say clear it with your DM & table; flavor is often free but it should align with the world your DM has set out for you. For example, a character in PJs may not vibe with a grimdark setting, but may be better suited to a light-hearted adventure.
yeah, if the world i get to join is like dark i would try to make it better
thank you for the response. also i was planning on using it as a bard
