Yeaaa I don't think I'd be friends with any of the other players outside of this game
Is that a bad thing?
Nah but I wouldn’t try to frame it that way. It’s just something that happens.
Hope you get a chance to find a group with other POC! It can definitely change the energy of the table (very similar to being at any table with out minorities - like all queer tables).

Hello, new here and hoping to make new friends to eventually play with. I’m somewhat educated on DnD but have very little experience playing it. I’m hoping to change that eventually but in the mean time, it would be cool to make friends along the way!
Hey! I'm brand new to DnD in general, I've played through Baldur's Gate 3 so I have a rough understanding of how it works, butI imagine there's a fair share of differences :P Looking for some people to potentially try an online campaign with? Cheers :)
Welcome, welcome!

Hi, I'm new to this DND stuff 🥹
Same here. My only real experience is Baldurs Gate 3 so I'm very surface level
Hmm, let's see if I can get this one right

Hey all, another newbie here
Sorta ran out of luck finding a local group, so thought I'd try my luck online
Yeah I'm in the same boat. Idk how to find a good group
Anyway, I'm sure there will be something for the both of us 😀
If you're familiar with D&D already, you can check out the instructions in #find-a-game for how the game search here is set up
I'm not familiar at all, I'm basically a beginner to it - some light table top experience but I'm a total noob
Then you probably want to start here

Cool
Hey guys. im a newborn dm. can someone help me out with the dm screen? I need like a pdf of some monster stats to put on my screen and i dont know wich ones to put
I usually just copy the stat blocks of the monsters i’m running that session.
Ahoy beautiful people!! I’m a fan of Critical Role, BG3, and I primarily play D&D 5e. I have some experience 3.5e. I’ve several characters that I have yet to play, and I’ve tried to GM enough games to know it’s not for me. I would love to find a group of guys, gals, nb pals, and anyone between or beyond to play some D&D or just talk about the game
What i use most on my dm screen are all the conditions and now all the weapon mastery features.
im gonna run like a first game and it has three poisonous spiders and a rock golem as a first boss. should i just get thost two for now or something more?
Just the monsters you’re going to use. There are hundreds of monsters in D&D. Multiple books full of em! They won’t fit on your screen.
haha you're right
You could get a couple more ready just in case your party finds some goblins or something.
Like have 1 or 2 extras ready if you need to improvise something
oh another question. do i need to have dungeon maps or can i just improvise on the spot for the first time?
You should probably have a map that you reference. You don’t need to show it to the players.
A map will help you plan something cohesive.
It’s more for you, in a way. It’s a structure that helps you plan.
Got it thanks✨
Watch videos about “the five room dungeon”
It’s a classic structure about how to build an adventure.
And just make a 5 room dungeon of your own.
thats very helpful thanks
Can you have multiple spell casting focus?
It’s not really needed. An Arcane focus just allows you to forgo Material Components in spells. This doesn’t change for costly components (50gp diamonds or something). You could technically have multiple Arcane/spellcasting focuses, but you’d only need one.
Ok thanks!
No problem!! If you want to go the route of an Arcane Focus Caster, you should be aware of the fact you could lose it, so it’s important to carry a components pouch anyway. However, material components can be a hassle when starting out, so most DMs just ignore them and rely on the Vocal or Somatic components for spell casting and narrative.
Makes sense!
Hii
Unless it costs money I guess it's just 1 less minor thing to trqck
Hey guys im a new DM looking to practice the game :) anyone looking for a game?
hello , im looking to join a game. i have played before but im still new. looking for a fun game
Me!!
me 2
@steady stratus @dire heron US, we could be two Gnomes in a trench coat
@agile palmi agree
Hell yeah, what a Chad
Thank you
Hello guys
Is there any book out there about the major cities in dnd?
Im also interested in deities, I feel like both of these are barely covered in the core books (or maybe its just me that I didnt find the info, I still haven't gully read them)
I see, I just keep hearing about places like neverwinter, baldurs gate or greyhawk that seem very important, even if not for a campaign based on those places, but probably influenced by them in some way, thanks a lot for the recommendations
Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide is a good book for the major cities on the Sword Coast of the Forgotten Realms. That includes neverwinter, waterdeep, Baldur's gate and some others.
Greyhawk is a whole setting just like the Forgotten Realms is its own setting. Most of the official adventures currently released for d&d 5e take place in the forgotten realms.
#find-a-game That is the channel you're looking for to make a public game posting
Will look into that, thank you both
Would you guys recommend in person or online for a first time player
Heavily depends on you.
Online games are easier to attend, no dices are required to be bought, and every resource is easily accessible.
In person games can be harder to organize, but the human element that comes from playing with other people/friends around you is something else imo.
I would suggest in person games, I think they are a better experience, but, to be fair, being a new player doesn't influence one thing being better than the other
Cheers dude
Heya ! Im totally overwhelmed by the players handbook and volo's guide to monsters size as well as all the spells/skills and some of the combat mechanics im not yet familiar with, id like to know mostly the basics and then learn throughout the sessions the more specific stuff.
Is that a thing that could be done ?
If yes would you recommend me certain parts of the books that are an absolute must read for all the basics ?
Would you recommend me additional books that are highly required ?
Would that change for the needs of the basic DM understandings and if yes what then.
My plan is to first play as a PC for multiple online beginner friendly sessions and learn from the DMs and once I get enough knowledge on everything I need Ill try to DM for my friends group
Hello all. I'm new to dnd and forming a group that has also never played but shows interest. I was thinking about purchasing some set. My question is which is the best one? I see there is a starter set, then there's an essential set, then a start set of storm wreck isle, and then I read the set that is call phandelver and below is the best to start new players off as the start of the campaign, levels 1-12, used to be the old intro that is regarded as one of the best for new players. Thank you in advance
Try this bit: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/playing-the-game#TheSixAbilities
And this bit: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/playing-the-game#Combat
And don't put money into the game until you've given it a good shake. The Free Rules are fine to start with.
Peril in Pinebrook is also a real ground level intro to the game for players and DMs alike:

hii my friend wants to play fallen aasimar in our dnd v2024 game what book should we use to access the race Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse or Volo's Guide to Monsters?
If it is a 2024 game your Friend can simply use the basic Aasimar from the 2024 PHB for that. The Aasimar in 2024 combines all the transformation options of the 2014 Aasimar into one species.
How does one learn to be Dungeon master
?newdm
- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.
- Learn how to be a Dungeon Master with this YouTube video or D&D Beyond article.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- Decide what kind of campaign you want to run. Here’s a few good options for new DMs.
- Get advice from your fellow Dungeon Masters in #dm-discussion and #dm-world-building.
The bot post above has some helpful tips for getting you started. I also highly recommend the YouTube series by Matt Colville called "Running the Game"
Great! Just in time when I was entertaining the prospect of becoming one
if i were to ask for dming advice, what channel would that be on?
#dm-discussion is the best place to talk to other DMs about DMing
awesome, thank you!!
Hi. I've never played D&D and I want to try it. Can someone suggest me a good one to start? I saw Dungeons&Dragons Online. Is it good?
That would be the MMORPG which plays like an online game, similar to WoW or FF14. Some elements of D&D are there but it's very different from the tabletop game.
A good place to begin is reading the free basic rules which gives an overview of the game and what you can expect to see and do.
Dungeons and Dragons is a tabletop roleplaying game, traditionally played using dice around a table with friends
There's plenty of ways to play using programs online nowadays, though, but it's still the same game at its core.
Dungeons & Dragons Online is a video game based on D&D, but it’s not the same game. The same goes for something like Baulder’s Gate. These games were inspired by the Tabletop game, and take some elements from it, but it’s not what people are talking about when they talk about D&D, and they aren’t the main topic of this server
And where can I find them?
I only saw the steam games
I guess those are not the ones you are talking about
Your Dungeon Master (DM) is the one who chooses which program (known as a Virtual Table Top or VTT) to use
No, DnD isn't a video game
D&D is not a video game. You play D&D by talking to other people, and imagining the fantasy world in your head. When playing it online, your typically just going to be using discord for voice or text messages, and optionally a program for displaying battle maps to make combat easier

Oh ok xd
When you play D&D, you get a group of 5-7ish people together. One of the people in your group will be the DM, and the rest will be players. It’s the DM’s job to make the work and run the game, while the players act as the heroes to overcome the challenges the DM creates for them
Thanks
lets say that my DM told me to make a DC 20 dex save, does that mean I have to get a 20 or above for a success?
Correct!
Thanks!
do you need to play dnd in person or could u also play it on discord for example
You could play dnd on discord there are plenty of tools to do it online
There are a bunch of third party sites like Roll20 or Foundry that are digital tabletop services. You can use them as is or in tandem with Discord to play online. There are also bots you can use like Avrae or dicebots in Discord that support online play.
The easiest way way to get started is by getting the player handbook or looking up videos on how to get started
And if you want you can also try to find campaigns that are new player friendly and are willing to teach you
That’s completely fine there are plenty of online campaigns that you can join!
Lots of people play online so you're joining a good group
ohk ty
Also if you want you can ask people around here if you need help a lot of people here are friendly and willing to help people who want to get into the hobby
tysm 😄
No problem if you have any more questions feel free to ask
ok, i will watch some videos and ask if i need help 😄
All of these are really good systems for online play btw so if you want to get into online play you should look into these because Lunarith was right on the money with these
No problem if you need assistance you can also privately dm me if you want
thank you :d
No problem and welcome to the hobby I hope you enjoy it!

The free rules are linked above! It's the perfect place to start for new players
It certainly requires a bit of time to learn the rules, but there's no rush to get it all understood in one day.
I just thought it could be cool I heard from a friend about this
Thankfully there's plenty of resources available to help you learn.
Okay. Thanks. Il take a look at the Stuff you sent above 🙂
Perhaps somone would maybe be so nice and have time to explain me the basics in a call sometime? Anyways Imma read into all this now
Unfortunately, this server does not have any voice channels, and we have dozens, if not hundreds of new members joins each day, so we just don't have the time or resources to do 1-on-1 lessons with everyone. We're more than happy to answer any questions you have though, if you ask them here
So i just learn that teverns exist...
It's basically a bar... but magical...
Like... beers and alcohol...
I'm suprised there isn't a pee system for how many potions and drinks the players have been drinking...
But again... this game is highly unrealistic... so dragons and demons play beware...
Hehe... anyway... so any tips for dnd?
It depends on what part of the game you want tips about!
When you say "tervern" do you mean "tavern"?
Tavern... sorry...
hey how do warlocks spells work again? am seeing the warlock slot levels and they only go up to level 5 but the warlock spell list shows spells from level 5 and upwards
So just FYI, A tavern is not "a bar but magical." Taverns are a real thing, that existed in the past and do still exist in some places. A tavern is a bar that also has rooms where people can stay the night. A bar and a hotel in one, basically
For warlock spells that are 6th level or higher, you use Mystic Arcanum to cast them, instead of spell slots
O_O
One per spell level
oh okey okey that makes more sense
Any advice for your first dnd character?
play something that sounds fun, but stick to one or two of the published books while you get adjusted to the rules.
Barbarian
Such a grand and intoxicating innocence
How can you be so naive?
(i love Morrowind)
Is a bow based fighter any good? Like I want a sort of Robin Hood guy but more gritty and rough and doesn’t use magic
oh yeah fighter is solid. being ranged gives you a ton of flexibility on the battlefield as well
I understand that weapons damage and hit chance are based off of modifiers, if bows use dexterity should I make my highest roll be dex? Or should I keep strength the highest for melee weapons and have bows be more of a backup
yeah if you're planning range then you'd want to go DEX to be your primary stat. I'd recommend going CON after cuz more health is never bad.
time to get back into dnd
first time i played i was dm and did dragons of stormwreck isle lmao
Just to add my own $0.02, archer fighters can be great. You focus DEX, stick to light armor and finesse weapons for melee. Archer Fighting Style feat.
- Don't worry about being original. That can come with time and experience. I'd ditto what Robut said: pick something fun.
- Make a character that you would think is fun but also that the other people at your table, players and DM, will enjoy being around. Lots of folks make their own personal fun paramount to the exclusion of other considerations. That ingredient will likely lead to a doomed game.
- Don't make your backstory too long since your DM has to read it. Besides, the real adventure is ahead of you. (I suggest 500 words max.)
- Be willing to tweak your character so that they fit the tone, genre, and setting of the game. Relatedly, work with the DM and other players to make the character fit the dynamic.
Ok sounds good
Hey, I am completely new to all of this. Like, never even delved into anything related to this either. I was looking to see if I may get some assistance with joining a new player friendly story how to make a character, the rules, etc etc.

there was one in #looking-for-players that should be what you’re looking for! beginner friendly campaign with all the tutorial fixings
I'm hoping the local game store runs more DND beginner sessions, I've always had stuff on but now I have the time and they aren't running any
Also, the learn to play stuff was cool (from the link above)
I wouldn't be waiting for a specific 'beginner friendly' game to pop up. In my experience most games that start at low levels are fine for a new player to cut their teeth on so long as you are transparent about being new, and are open to learning.
Ah, I've had some poor experiences trying to jump in and being told sorry no so yeah
Also, RL is always the preference, as the timezones mean I'll be playing online at 3am haha
When you say 'jump in', do you mean asking if you can join an existing group or asking to join when someone's called for players?
The former tends to be less welcome than the latter
Ah the experience has been with both
It's okay though, I might have worked something out with friends but we shall see.
Yo, I’m quite young and have never played DnD but I’ve been wanting to get into it recently, anyone got any tips on how I can try get into games or find groups? Online or real life, appreciate any help

What’s the best race?
The one you enjoy playing
🤔 I am kinda new do DnD had a few campaigns that stopped because of the DM, now i am looking to join a new one.
What would be a good way to go about it?
A triathlon
😳
Kind of an odd question, but what'd the preferred method for players in the server to record their character sheets? Do you guys use the PDF sheet or the interactive sheet in DnD Beyond?
It varies greatly based on personal preference and circumstances - chiefly if you're playing online or in-person.
If you're not using a lot of homebrew and can afford to purchase the digital source books or have someone that can share them with you digitally over DDB, then DDB is great.
As someone that plays in-person at tables with a lot of homebrew, I print off form-fillable character sheets and fill in most details with pen and pencil.
Ah, thanks for the information. Most of my tabletop experiences have been solely relegated towards online sources. Never really tried an in-person type of deal, because it isn't that popular from where I am at.
You say don't spend any money until I try it out? So would that include starter sets too? I've found the introductory for stormwreck isle but it seems really short for everyone coming together for the first time. I did find the frozen sick. But that module references some books you have to pay for but it is the only free adventure I found on dnd beyond on the app. I'm having trouble finding the free content everyone is referring too
Which class can accumulate the most # of cantrips? I love cantrips
@olive ether yeah that's the one I was looking at. And the essentials one. Both for $15 each isn't bad. Although the allure of the $45 one with all the dice is tempting lol
You can start with just the free basic rules first and if folks like it enough, invest in other books/materials.
Free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
I guess that'd be Sorcerer? If we're talking by level up
But like, if you're talking about the Ultimate Cantrip Build, that'd probably be a high level bard with a few feats or smthn
What D&D book is the one with the class monk and more?
The Players Handbook
Hey guys, what effect has the religion on the game?
i just dont think its necessary
It isn’t
Unless you're a cleric or a paladin (or maybe warlock), no real significance aside from story and narrative elements! Depends on the game
There’s really no mechanical function to it. It’s essentially just roleplay material.
I think there’s some instances of your religion preventing your character from performing certain actions or losing allegiance
But other than that not a lot
Even clerics and paladins could be reflavored to sidestep religion.
That’s probably something you should discuss with your DM.
I like having at least a few sentences of backstory, cuz that can influence my character's behavior or goals
i am the dm🤓
Oooooh
im just learning
How much backstory do you want from your players, then?
not much really
Then, try to incorporate player backstories sometimes!
In example, I'm going to run a game soon for a few folks. One of my player's backstories is that he used to be a gem forger. I placed a treasure chest at the end of a dungeon, and on inspection, he can discover that the gems inside are actually forgeries and let the party know
They can be a useful DM tool to get players hooked into the story, or to challenge or motivate their characters down the line.
theyre gone run around untill they find that there is a outside world
You can also get NPC ideas or location/enemy ideas from your player's backstories
I recommend inkarnate for maps, or Heroforge for npcs!
And hey, no harm in scribbling maps on ms paint or grid paper
There’s some community suggestions for maps here: #dnd-maps message
I mean i tried on the paper but i couldn't decide to do it in 2d or 3d and if i did in any of them how would that effect the distance and the squares would be useless at that point
I would always make maps from a 2D/top down view. Typically in games, each square represents 5ft, but larger scale maps (such as huge dungeons or world maps) can be more loose or use bigger scales
You can use whichever style of map you prefer. If you're not using one that shows true distances, as a DM you'll have to make some judgement calls about how far folk can travel and the range of area effect spells but it's certainly possible to do.
For dungeons I like Dungeonscrawl, and watabou.itch.io has some generators to help you get inspired.
Hey im new to DnD
Howdy.
What Basic Rules do i need to know / lern?
The basic idea: join a Dungeon Master (DM) for a game of heroic fantasy adventure. As a player, you take the role of a character who may be a human, dwarf, elf or otherwise, with a class that determines your primary abilities and special features like a wizard's spellcasting or a bard's inspiration.
The DM narrates the scene, giving you a picture of the situation, and you choose how your character acts.
When there's some uncertainty about the success of a particular action you'll be asked to roll a d20 (a twenty sided die) and typically add one or more numbers to the result depending on your character's capabilities (like skill proficiency and your relevant ability score bonus).
The next post will have a bunch of links to useful content and videos. You can also check out #learn-to-play . If you find yourself with specific questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Hi rhere
Man how the hell do i build a character sheet
Hiii!!
Can anybody help me in dms? 😔
Hello hello!!!!
@grim cipher sent a dm
hello im like really new to DnD what website is the best for making my character?
@str8edgepup DnD beyond
thank you
for the charcater creation there is a bunch of stuff that is kidna wierd ofr me idk if i should use milestones or xp? or hit point typs or even the partnered content
I recommend watching YouTube tutorials about character making
You should ask your DM what settings to use for that whole first page.
If you don’t have a DM yet, you can just skip it all for now.
I recommend JoCats "Krap guide to DnD" for learning about classes and species
yea currently i dont have one i wanted to make a character and then hopefully find a DM but idk since i have like no experience with DnD it seems veyr intresting
thank you ill watch it
Hey guys I'm trying to make a character with a class as similar to refrees from usogui (very good manga) which are like superhumans at hand to hand combat, which class would be closest ?
monk
Which subclass tho
hmmm
probably any of thwm could work but lemme look at them
what exact sort of abilities are you looking for?
How would ascendant dragon work 😭
Hmmmm very good kicking
it’s basically just emulating dragons. you get the breath, the flight (limited though), the resistances, all the little fixings. plus your unarmed strikes become one of the common dragon damage types of your choice.
i think you could do this with any monk imma be real with you imma be real
unarmed strikes arent always hand to hand i dont think
it just means no weapon
I see
Is open hand good ?
open hand is like
its okay?
not bad not good
it ultimately depends on how youre playing your monk
It's so joever I'm gonna make the worst character ever
believe in yourself oomf
mercy shadow and dragon i think are my top three
because
- heals heals heals plus necrotic damage is good
- i cant really describe it its just fun
- one free resistance (which is so important to me and me only) and lotsa damage opportunities

New to DM and I had a character who use thunderous voice to try and intimidate a bandit pirate ( descent to advernus) the bandit pirate was stronger than the player and had 8 crew bandits backing him up.
The character rolled a nat 20 and with bonuses hit 26 the party is made up of two people
For using a spell and intimidation I didn’t want to ignore the creativity but I also knew that a level 3 yelling at 8 pirates and a captain might seem a little improbable. I didn’t want to stop and think to much so I just went with it and and said that it made them flee but the captain said he will for sure be back
After we wrapped up for the night I feel like I could have handled it differently being that the captain and 8 mates is stronger than 2. I feel like maybe I should have had the 8 men flee and left the captain or just at least make the pirates receive disadvantage or even give advantage on to the characters
How would you have delt with it in this situation and how do you deal with the wisdom check(intimidation, persuasion, deception, etc without them feeling too strong or being abused)
question about dice
a) is d20 used for something other than ability checks (aka attack/save rolls or skill checks)?
b) is it correct to say that the other dice are in general used for damage and healing (hit die included)?
a) Initiative checks are another kind of ability check that uses a d20, but otherwise yes.
b) That's a reasonable heuristic.
yo guys I’m new to dnd and not still not that familiar with the rules but it seems fun
Someone should explain everything to me lol
Attack rolls and saving throws are not types of ability checks.
I’d recommend asking over in #dm-discussion

it's a check that uses your ability modifier and uses d20, what's the significant difference?
It's not a check.
Any rule that gives you a bonus to ability checks does not apply to attack rolls or saving throws.
Ability checks, attacks rolls, and saving throws are the three (separate) types of D20 Tests.
?tag new d20
D20 Tests
When the outcome of an action is uncertain, the game uses a d20 roll to determine success or failure. These rolls are called D20 Tests, and they come in three kinds:
- An ability check represents a creature using talent and training to try to overcome a challenge, such as forcing open a stuck door, picking a lock, entertaining a crowd, or deciphering a cipher.
- A saving throw—also called a save—represents an attempt to evade or resist a threat, such as a fiery explosion, a blast of poisonous gas, or a spell trying to invade your mind.
- An attack roll determines whether an attack hits a target.
They all follow essentially the same process -- roll a d20, add modifiers, compare to a target number -- but for the purposes of the rules, they're categorically separate.
oh we have new tag commands? Nice!
That one was there before, but all the existing ones have been revisited.
And there are a few brand new class ones.

Barbarian
Storm with Rage, and wade into hand-to-hand combat
Barbarians are mighty warriors who are powered by primal forces of the multiverse that manifest as a Rage. More than a mere emotion—and not limited to anger—this Rage is an incarnation of a predator’s ferocity, a storm’s fury, and a sea’s turmoil.

I see that the one with the rule for BA spells is still the same. Is that going to remain, so that we can use it for people that want to continue using the 2014 rules, or will it be replaced eventually as well?
That'll probably stay as-is.
Would it be too much of a headache to add a citation throughout tags like (2014) or (2024) for extra clarity?
Sounds doable in rule. Everything in new is going to reflect only the Free Rules.
Just a little add to the text itself would be nice. Not worth restructuring the whole tag system itself!
Well, aside from the one specifically for BA Spells, IDK what else you would even need that clarification in. There are currently only 2 commands in the "rules" section, and the one for "what is magical" is 80% the same as the 2024 rule. And if you wanted to put in the 2024 versions of both of those rules, suddenly we have to ask "why those specifically?" They were commands before, because of how obscure and hard to find those rules were, but now they are just a normal part of the rules glossary. Should the entire rules glossary be accessible via commands? If not, then how do you decide which ones?
Hello I'm new to this dnd. I hear that can be a dragon

Welcome! The bot post above has some helpful resources to help you get started, including a link to the Free Rules
Thank you
The rules outline what you can and cannot do during character creation. Unfortunately, playing as a full-blown dragon is not something you can do. As Spamandtuna just pointed out, there is a playable race known as the Dragonborn, which are dragon-like people. When you reach the upper most levels of the game, there are some magic spells that can temporarily let you take the form of a dragon, or summon a dragon to assist you in battle. But it cannot be your natural state
Okay cool
Hello, I'm new to D&D, and I was wondering if I could be a half-naga?
There aren't any official races, but you could maybe re-flavor one or use custom lineage. Check with the DM you play with!
Okay, thank you very much!
I could see you flavoring a Yuan-Ti into a Naga, but yeah would be best to talk to your DM
Hello, can someone explain how maneuvers work for the battle master in dummy terms and how they work with your turns specifically. What does the superior dice due as well ?!?
When you attack, you can use a superiority die to add some other effect. You have a small pool of dice and can only use one per attack.
So if you have the Tripping Attack, you can decide to add on the Trip effect when you hit. If your attack hits, you roll normal damage and roll a superiority die for extra damage. Then the target has to make a Strength save; if it fails, it falls prone. If it succeeds, nothing happens, though it did take more damage because of the superiority die.
Not sure if that's simple enough, and this is my understanding of the 2014 rules. Not sure if they changed it in 2024.
Thank you !🙏🏾
Now that the new DnD books (2024) are out, which books should I buy to get the most updated content?
I've only recently been learning to play with friends and I'm afraid of buying a book that already exists and then, in the short term, an improved version of it will come out.
We managed to buy the 2024 PHB
This did help a lot, I was confused as if the maneuvers tied to your actions or were entirely separate. Now I feel comfortable with the maneuvers!
any dice set w/ box on sale for Amazon prime day ?
You can - but they need to be appropriate and follow server rules.
And affiliate links are not permitted
Definitely look though, I just saw a collection of 5 colored dice with a bag (not box) for about 8 bucks
You can surely find something that meets your mark
Pog
Yeah I'm looking at a set that comes with 6 sets, 42 dice, and it's$15
Is there any main difference between like resin, metal, plastic, etc other than weight
For most game purposes, no.
Not much of a prime deal as they're only 3 bucks off
No difference really.
Thank y'all
Personal opinion, avoid metal if you don't care about being impressive or having your dice be a conversational piece. Sometimes metal dice can damage a table or just be a bit annoying when they're pointier or too elaborate and get caught on things
I'm a sucker for solid color, plastic dice...
Minty which one is ol reliable?
Hold on, can I dm you a link? It's the bag dice I was looking at
I think they are
I wouldn't call it "an improved version." They're just different—and 2024 content has some backwards compatibility with the 2014 rules.
Personally, I like 2014, and there's more content out there now than I could ever play in a lifetime. But if you're brand new, you could jump on with 2024. Plus, no need to buy anything right away. Try the Free Rules and see if you like it before you drop any dollars.

So, the best way to get some tips on how to get into a game would be the FAQ at the top of #find-a-game. That being said, its generally recommended to give the Basic Rules a read through to get an idea of how to play.
D&D Beyond is a very useful site for referencing the rules and building your character, but it isn't really built for 'playing' the game. That is more often done through discord voice-channels, and Virtual Tabletops
well yea. but i’d rather play with others that use the same platform as me. just so everything is the same yk
Yeah thats fair. In my experience the vast majority of online tables will use discord to communicate during the game.
Hey yall Im new, I just started thinking about dnd recently as I have finished the entire dragon age collection and baldurs gate. I know nothing really but would love to learn so I can one day play the game. Where/how should I start?
Maybe the bare basics and even then not sure. I know you create a character and you fill out a sheet, roll dice rp and all that but I would say thats about it. I know most of the classes and races though

Oo awesome I will take a look at that!
Not on this server - in fact we don't actually host any D&D games as noted in our server rules/FAQ
Your group may have been using a Virtual Tabletop (VTT)
Hello y'all! Does this apply to going from BG3 to DnD 5e 2024? Because I have a specific character in mind I played in BG3 I'd love to play a close equivalent too but I'm not sure it's even possible...
Well BG3 is a video game so it takes some liberties to ensure it's a fun video game. So some things may not translate 1 for 1 into D&D TTRPG game mechanics/rules.
I know that, don't worry, I've read enough of DnD 5e 2024 to know I won't be able to make the same, I just want to make something as close to that character as possible and would appreciate a knowlegeable person guiding me there. 🦉
Could check with folks in #character-discussion on how to build <x> from BG3 as a D&D character
Thank you, I appreciate it!
Felicitations, malefactors!
So... what should I do now?
I know... that I feel unwelcome here...
So... i have nothing... so... it seems this dnd isn't for beginers at all...
I'll change dnd for now...
Have fun though~ :3
What do you need help with? Why do you feel unwelcome?
I want to be a player... to learn dnd... I have nothing...
I want to be dungeon master... since I can't be a player... I have nothing...
It's been 20 days now...
Nothing...
I even volunteer to be a kobold... by ingster... but ingster left because "I'm not good enough..." he is right... but he type it in a way that looks like he HATES me...
All I do is try to help... try to follow the rules... try to entertain players...
Nothing...
I haven't had a good experience in dnd lately...
So I'll leave for now...
But I'll be back... just need to find a server that actually support beginners...
Sorry... I'm a bit harsh... I'm just not having a good day today...
No hard feelings...
Just tired is all...
Sorry...
No worries we all have bad days, just remember that it does take a while to find a game sometimes so spend the time learning the rules so more to prepare for when you do find a table that suits you
Hey! I’m still new here, wondering where to get some advice on a problem player.
#dm-discussion could potentially help assuming you're the DM
Otherwise maybe #dnd-discussion , though your advice is likely gonna come down to "communicate with your DM about the player"
I am in fact the dm. Thank you!

If you need any help there are plenty of resources around here to check out and feel free to ask around there are plenty of people willing to help here
The finding a game chat is the best way to find available games and there are plenty of campaigns that are new player friendly for you to check out!
would you recommend me to join a un-paid dnd campaign knowing how much of a novice I am
Like, how's the people toward newcomers that know close to nothing
Paid dnd campaigns “tend” to be more serious about rules and experience so probably don’t join them and in my experience un-paid tends to be better for newcomers because people will be willing to help you out more
@pure anchor happy to help do you have any more questions or need any more assistance?
Eh, it depends on the game you join.
There are paid games that specifically cater to beginners.
And free games that specifically don't.
@iron ridge Thanks, I'm currently try to read the rules and maybe join a game to see how it feels
But if you don't want to pay, you certainly don't have to. There's plenty of free games to go around.
Our groups were always happy to help new players. My brother even loves to live vicariously through new players because they get to experience the game and various monsters for the first time
That’s cool what made you want to get into dnd?
Yeah, I think most games (paid or not) are generally welcoming to newcomers, even if they aren't explicitly advertised as such.
Thanks guys, I just recently learned how to play and my cousin is really big on dnd so he has a lot of books that I'm reading
It's just that we play sessions monthly and I would like to learn more playing with you guys
@iron ridge Oh well, I really love fantasy stories and I read too much for my own good. Always wanted to try DnD but never had the time.
No problem a lot of people here are happy to help and if you have any more questions or need any more help feel free to ask
I feel that time can get in the way of doing things lol and fantasy is one of my favorite genres too I used to run campaigns a lot more and used to make them new player friendly but life got hectic so I had to stop sadly
@iron ridge Sorry to hear that. Hope things get better. I was actually wondering how the dice works.
Fantasy novels are my favorite as well and dragonlance really helped get me into the genre. Now I have a huge list of books to read lol
?tag new dice
Dice
Dice add randomness to the game. The 20-sided die (d20) is the most important one you’ll use. When the outcome of an action is uncertain, the game uses D20 Tests to determine success or failure. The higher your roll, the more likely it is that you succeed. The most common use for dice other than the d20 is to determine damage.
When you need to roll dice, the rules tell you how many dice to roll of a certain type, along with any numbers to add or subtract. For example, “3d8 + 5” means you roll three eight-sided dice, add them together, and add 5 to the total.
im new to dnd does anybody want to play a campaign?
@stable tide Is that one of the DnD books? Is it good?
#find-a-game is where to start your search!
thank you!
Thank you and things have been less hectic I have been trying to talk more in the dnd server now that they have been and I want to try to start running campaigns again
Dragonlance is a series of novels, there are over 100 books I believe. The novels started based on the authors dnd games and eventually became a setting in dnd with their own dnd books., the latest being shadow of the dragon queen. 😃
@stable tide Well dang
@iron ridge If its possible, If you ever do make a new campaign that's also newbie friendly, I would like to join.
I am planning on making a new one so if you still want to join when I do I would be happy to have you
I'm preparing a game now for a couple players but I'm keeping it a small group for now. I'm still pretty new to dming
i would love to join whatever you guys have prepared
The books started out in the 80s I believe, there were a few main trilogies and then many more side stories
I honestly just want to have a feel of the game and see what's out there
Well dang, dedication is wild
does anyone mind explaining me how gods work, I don't really get it
Eh, no different than comic books or Star Wars: once you build a world (or a universe), you open the field to a ton of stories.
There aren't any rules for "how gods work in D&D." It's really a matter of whether gods are present or not in the game the specific DM is running and whether their presence has any impact on the world and the people in it.
Like how do I know what god to worship
You ask your DM. If you don't have a DM yet, you don't need to worry about gods yet.
Alignment can help you choose a God, also if you believe in the same things
in the player's handbook it gives you a list of gods from different worlds
You could also take the generic approach. "My character follows the god of luck [whoever that may be in the setting]."
Sure, but the DM may not use that lore.
What's the difference from a god of the forgotten realms to one of another world
Some folk worship one, some many, some none. Everyone's individual game may have its own set of gods, but there are some standard pantheons here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/compendium/rules/basic-rules/appendix-b-gods-of-the-multiverse
If you want to hear more about it I can privately dm you!
oh, i see
I'd imagine it's, say, the difference between a Greek version of a god or a Roman one: similar concepts, but their specific portfolio, rituals, and such may be quite different.
I'm currently learning more about the Gods in the critical role setting of Exandria but that's because i want to know more about the betrayer Gods for story
@iron ridge Of course sure
so to clarify, If i'm currently in the material plane. I can worship any god of any pantheon?
Like those gods will be present in the material plane
Are you involved with a particular game right now?
I doubt your character would know about the gods of Eberron if they were in the Forgotten Realms. So again, I encourage you to talk with the eventual DM you play with and keep any details very generic.
Just because a game takes place in the Forgotten Realms doesn't mean the DM has to use that panetheon as written. It's just an option.
well technically yes
But I myself don't worship any god
Wait, so what's the difference between the forgotten realms and the material plane?
If you have a character who's connected to a particular game, don't worry about any god the GM for that game doesn't say exists.
Okey
Roughly speaking, multiversal shenanigans. The Forgotten Realms is one of many worlds that all co-exist on the Prime Material Plane, but don't "talk" to each other.
A shenanigan is a common term that doesn't come from d&d. A shenanigan is a chaotic, unpredictable twist of events, often orchestrated
gotcha
But now it's said both for natural and artificially-caused events
so if the material plane the main world
Why aren't there gods specific to that plane
Like why it's gods of the forgotten realms, greyhawk, dragonlance, eberron, etc
because the DM gets to choose which God's he wants to use
They're all different settings. I don't understand the cosmology in terms of how they do (or don't) connect to each other, but that does have an impact.
Why dont the gods from Tolkiens Arda (Lord of the Rings) appear in Westeros (Game of thrones).
Same reason than why different D&D worlds have different gods.
Hello I’m pretty new is anyone hosting any games anytime soon?
and there are Gods for specific settings, it's just up to the DM on which pantheons they want to use
In the end a game or campaign of D&D is a story, but instead of a sngle author writing it, its a group of ppl developing the story as they play, guided by the narrative and plot the DM sets
Or it's just a place where all the other planes converge
Read #find-a-game.
Think the material plane as the "living" or mortal plane. Every world can have one.
Ohhhhhh
Now i get it, I was thinking this whole time of the material plane as a world instead of a plane of existence (or dimension)
Is Ranger a good class to use for my first dnd campaign? I heard it kinda has bad features, but I also heard that it is underrated
If you’re interested in playing Ranger then it’s a good class for you, imo. Certainly at a systemic level some classes and features are better than others, but at the individual game level those tend to not matter as much.
Ranger can be really good for the right type of campaign.
Usually if you at some point feel like you dont live up to your role compared to other players, talk to your DM. Many DMs will be open to give you some buffs if they agree with your reasoning
This video breaks down the 5e "forgotten realms" really well, may want to watch. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w99Htj_8VJ4
Ahhhh I see
I am interested in seeing why people say it's "bad"
And I'm willing to give it a try
Rangers get a lot of crap but I have always enjoyed playing one personally
gee thank you
welcome! I learned a lot about DnD through youtube videos lol
The "problem" with rangers is that they are a martial halfcaster. So they do rely on attacks. Fighters and Barbarians just get better martial capabilities from the get go, and Paladin outshadows the Ranger as far as "enhancing your sword attacks with spells" goes.
So Ranger usually shines in campaigns that focus more on the survival aspect....but bards and rogues or clerics and druids can just as well cover that is build for it
Soooo Rangers are only "bad" because it's only situational?
The common criticism of Ranger is that some of the class features can pidgeonhole you into a very specific niche that may not come up often or you may not want to happen.
For 2014 Ranger a lot of its features focused on getting advantages against certain enemies and in certain environments which made it cumbersome if you weren’t fighting those enemies and/or in those environments (until the release of Tasha’s optional features)
2024 Ranger puts a lot of focus on the spell Hunter’s Mark which has gained some controversy as the spell was/is considered a “trap spell”. The class did receive a lot of buffs, however. I think the consensus is that the power floor of 2024 Ranger was raised while the power ceiling was lowered.
Ohhhh
They do get access to some of the best parts of the early Druid spell list, so thankfully their casting is quite robust.
As for being “situational”, if you use 2014 Ranger w/ Tasha’s optional rules or 2024 Ranger you‘ll feel very versatile
More that outside of specific situations Paladin, or Ranged Fighter/Bard overshadow them if you ask me
Less goooo
Hmm I see, I'll still try playing it though, I like the challenge
Honestly, play it and see if you like it
I always enjoyed 2014 rangers despite what people said about them
Yeah, I love most of the ranger subclasses!
gloom stalker ranger and rogue scout/thief/assassin is also a classic multiclass
if don't mind multiclassing
Probably not for the newcomers channel.
fair enough
Hello! I'm new to D&D and wanted to ask how do you play it? Is there a specified website/ a program to play it online? And do I have to pay for it? I don't really know a lot about D&D but I'd love to learn and try to play with someone :D
haha same fro me
D&D is a game that is played in the imagination. The only thing you need to play is a way to communicate with other people. Voice chats, text chats, in person, phone calls. I've even heard that one group once played a game of D&D by mailing each other letters.
Discord is definitely the most popular tool for voice and text based play though. There are also other tools that are completely optional, but might make the game easier. Things like Virtual Battle Maps for combat, digital character sheets, digital dice, etc. What specific tools you use will be determined by who you are playing with and what your group is interested in using.

The two bot posts above should have some helpful information for you
Alright, Thanks!
I like to ask how does range work on spells?
In what sense?
Is it a radius for like the command spell
I mean for spells with just 60ft
Is it a radius around me to a certain point
it should depend on the type of spell and the DM
Command will affect a single creature within 60 feet of you in any direction. Upcasting the spell (using a higher-level spell slot) will include more creatures within that radius of you.
That what I am asking
Usually, reading the spell description (not just the header) will help make it clearer.
Can I affect one creature infront of me from 60ft, and then one 60ft behind me
By RAW (rules as written), probably not because you have to be able to see your target.
Okay
RAW you have 360 degree vision
Would I be inclined to allow it anyway? Yes, because D&D5 has no rules that govern facing.
Excellent. (because see what my follow-up was. 🙂 )
Facing is an optional rule iirc
If so, it's not in PHB2024, which is what I was consulting for my answers.
Spin around and say it all around
Is there a Dispel magic item in the game? I'm not sure where to look and the search doesn't give good results. Looking for an item capable of dispelling magic with multiple uses/resets daily kind of thing
if you're asking for a strictly official D&D campaign i dont think there is one, but your DM (or you if you're DMing) could make it and add it in the game
Ah I was trying to unmagic "dispel magic" spell for a magic less artificer. Was hoping to use a reference but it's ok I'll make up a techno babble item
Flavor is free.
(The last time I got to play, a friend who had joined us had an artificer whose fire bolt spell was flavored as a prototype light/laser gun, and the faerie fire spell was a glitter bomb.)
😂 😂 Glitter bomb is amazing
My wife was playing a paladin inspired by Eve Dallas from the JD Robb novels. Her mace was either a baseball bat or a lead pipe; can't recall which way we flavored it.
It doesn't cast "dispel magic" per se, but there is a magic item called "Dispelling Stone" which does something similar
Thanks! I'll check it out!
The item is from Explorer's Guide to Wildemount, so be sure to turn on "Partnered Content" in your search filters, if you look for it on D&D Beyond
Will do! Thanks for the heads up
Hello! Does anyone have a link to a nice explanation of which caster classes in D&D 5E have to find spells to learn (ex: Wizard) vs automatically learning from their diety/patron (ex: cleric/warlock)? It's not clear to me how players find and acquire these spells, per class.
Wizards are the only class that can find new spells in game. Every other class either gains new spells on level up, adding to their limited pool, or has access to their class's full spell list and can have ready a select number of them.
But wizards also learn spells on level up. They just have another means to gain spells, giving them one of the largest pools.
Have you read through #find-a-game?
Hello? can anyone call and help me with my charecter sheet? im new
can anyone help?
What seems to be the difficulty?
i guess trying to figure out the stuff ive tried youtube videos but for me its confusing
i understand the stats the Strength,Wisdom. etc
Where exactly are you stuck, then?
What have you got so far? What are you still missing?
The name and level stuff the race too and background but its like the abilities part
for me it is confusing
Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
yes i used a standard array
And you have your ability modifiers for each of those as well?
So those bonuses from your race get added to the ability score, a number from 1-20.
So if you put the 13 from the standard array in Constitution, you'd also add the +2 from lizardfolk for a total of 15.
Then for each ability, you'll also write a second number from -5 to +5, called the ability modifier. The value depends entirely on your score, as shown in the table here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/creating-a-character#AbilityScoresandModifiers
So a Con. score of 15 would mean you have a Con. modifier of +2. (They don't add together; you'll keep these numbers separate.)
OOOHHHH thats what it meant in the video
because inthe vids they had the players handbook
but since i just started i dont have that
The free rules contain most of what's in the Player's Handbook.
The 2024 rules are here (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules) and the 2014 rules are here (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014).
Should I get the players handbook?
Not until you try the game. My two cents, anyway.
Thank you
i was really confused before and i appreciate the help
this was really helpful
That said, if you try the game and do find you like it and want to invest some money, the Player's Handbook (PHB) is the core rulebook, so it'd be the best thing to buy first.
ok
I’ve played like 2 times and I like the game but I have nothing DnD my self I just used my friends stuff what should I buy as a newcommer to learn the game better
You don't need to buy anything. The rules I linked above are free and contain most of what you'd find in the core rulebook. You might also read through #learn-to-play or check out the various videos like Handbooker Helper or WASD20's Rules School on YouTube.
Ok I will take a look thank you
Also for the ability do you put it in the small circle or the big spot? i'm using the 2014 charecter sheet btw
becaus in one vid it put it in the big part but another one they put it in the little part
It's just a matter of preference.
You'll typically use the modifier more, so I'd suggest putting that as the big number.
But whatever works best for you.
So, for every ability, you have an "Ability Score" and an "Ability Score Modifier"
One of those goes in the big box, and the other goes in the small circle. Which one is which is totally up to you, so long as you can easily read it
If your Constitution's Ability Score is 14 or 15, then its Ability Score Modifier is +2
I date from editions where the modifier didn't exist in the form it does not, and the score was more important, so that's what I put in the big box.
But I'm old, in internet terms. (Almost as old as the game)
what abou the check boxes near the save throws and skill?
im a druid btw just in case it effects that
In a standout, where people know they're about to fight, but waiting for each other's move and trying to negotiate, if one side fires first - is it a surprise, they move first but without a surprise round or they still have to roll the initiative
You can fill in the bubbles next to the skills and saves you're proficient in. It's an easy visual cue.
Do you know about the proficiency bonus?
Are you using 2014 or 2024 rules?
2014 charecter sheet
A druid has proficiency in saving throws based on Intelligence and Wisdom. Tick those two boxes.
Okay, so as a druid, you have this line:
Skills: Choose two from Arcana, Animal Handling, Insight, Medicine, Nature, Perception, Religion, and Survival
If you're proficient with them, that means you add the proficiency bonus (+2 at level 1) to any of the skills you choose.
ok nature an survival are perfect for my lizardfolk
So you have a +2 from just your class. Survival is a Wisdom skill, so that also adds your Wisdom modifier as well. Your proficiency bonus is a mathematical way of showing you're better at some things than others.
If your Wisdom is +1 and you're proficient in Survival, then yeah, put +3 next to it. For Nature, you include your proficiency bonus + your Intelligence modifier.
Yep!
Welp
ok
I'm brand stinking new here. How's it hangin.

Good! Welcome are you new to dnd or just the server? 😃
Hi there
where do i post the recruitment as a dungeon master?
I’m new to DnD universe and i would like to find people to play/learn
it says i dont have permission so how do u exactly do it
Use #find-a-game for instructions on how to post there
You have to type /looking-for-players

Oh thanks
You don't have to learn everything all at once. Take advantage of the various resources like the rules, #learn-to-play, videos, and podcasts.
Howdy! Im just new to the server. I've played DnD once a few years ago with friends. It didn't go well. I've got everything I need for DnD but need a refresher and people to play it with.
Well glad to see your giving it a try again! Dnd is a blast with the right group, it's just sorta hard finding that group. You can start looking at #find-a-game and post in #looking-for-dm to start.
Also feel free to ask any dnd questions here
what do i put in the inspiration? for my character sheet?
Inspiration is a reward your DM can grant you for certain things. Leave it blank for now
ok
i also need help with the armor class and initiative alreadygot the speed down
?tag new ac
Armor Class (AC)
Your Armor Class represents how well your character avoids being wounded in battle. As a baseline, a character’s AC equals 10 + his or her Dexterity modifier, but characters often wear armor and shields, use spells, or have class or race features to improve their AC.
When making an attack roll, the attack hits if the roll equals or exceeds the target’s AC.
Your AC will typically be determined by whatever armor and shield you use, but some classes and species have special abilities that change their AC without armor
Lizardfolk have natural armor, so if you are not wearing armor, then your AC will be 13+ your dexterity modifier.
what about initiative?
Your initiative modifier is just your dexterity modifier
So when you roll for initiate, you roll a d20 and add your dexterity modifier.
How does one counter charisma check, such as intimidation,’or is a it a strict DC check. How would a dm go about setting a DC check
Is stealth just vs perception?
Oh thank you! I'm gonna read up and refresh myself then ask around sometime this weekend maybe. I'm busy with work untill then. But thank you so much for the pointers! I appreciate it.
i need help with the attack and spell casting
i dont really understand it
i dont know what counts for the attacks n stuff
like is it for weapons?

Well I suggest giving this a read: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/playing-the-game#MakinganAttack
As for spellcasting see https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/spells#CastingSpells
thanks
i meant for the charecter sheat srry
i went to go eat before i checked
so i need help filling out the charecter sheet
im just confused
can anyone help?
What have you got so far? Where are you stuck?
what to do with the attacks and spellcasting im a lizardfolk druid level 1
Have you chosen your spells already?
no
Do you know which version of the Druid class you’re using? 2014 or 2024?
Or more to the point: inside the Spellcasting feature, how many spells does it say you can prepare?
Hey guys new to this what do I need to start
im using the 2014 charecter sheet
so i guess 2014?
not sure
Do you have the Druid rules available?
no
Welcome! #learn-to-play has plenty of good info to get you started, but all you really need are the Free Rules, a set of dice (real or digital), and some folks to play with.
I’d recommend using the new version, then:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/2190878-druid
But if you really want to stick with the 2014 one:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/3-druid
2 plus your Wisdom modifier
If you had a Wisdom modifier of +3, then you’d be able to prepare five spells.
ok
What is your Wisdom modifier?
5+
So you’ve got a 20 in Wisdom already?
If it’s +5, though, then you’d be able to prepare 7 spells.
18 because i 1+ from my race and i got 2+ from my profiency
Your proficiency bonus doesn’t apply to your ability modifiers.
Wait it wasnt that
It’s added alongside your ability modifier when you’re proficient with a skill, saving throw, or weapon.
this
scroll up to see my messaged earlier
Yeah, that’s talking about skills.
Ohhhh...
If you have a Wisdom score of 18, you have a Wisdom modifier of +4.
That +4 gets added to any skills that use Wisdom, like Perception.
without owning the new book, whats the easiest way of converting a character from 5e to the new 2024 rules thing
And if you’re proficient with those skills, you also add your proficiency bonus for that skill.
So if you were proficient with Perception, you’d have a total of +6 for Perception checks (+4 Wis. and +2 PB).
You can get started with the Free Rules.
The 2024 PHB is still fifth edition, though.
o i c ty ty
Anyway, if you’ve got a +4 Wis. modifier (from your Wis. score of 18), then you can prepare 2+4 spells for a 2014 Druid.
So you’d have a +1, then.
yes
Which means three spells
So go ahead and pick whichever three you like here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells?filter-class=3&filter-level=1&filter-source=1
Thunderwave, speak with animals, cure wounds
where do i put these?
You’re filling out a paper sheet, no?
yes
ok
You can also pick two cantrips:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells?filter-class=3&filter-level=0&filter-source=1
do i put druid in spellcasting class?
when it comes to editable character sheets (pdf) is there any the discord generally recommends (ideally compatible with ios)
resistance and produce flam
flame
I haven’t done any PDFs on iOS, but the D&D Beyond or Fight Club 5e apps work pretty well.
tyty
D&D Beyond would also let you print a pre-filled PDF for your character (from the website).
Would I need to own the 2024 virtual book to create an accurate version of the character sheet?
Depends on what character options you were using previously.
The Druid Table shows how many spell slots you have at each character a level.
A level 1 Druid has two 1st-level spell slots.
wait but i have 3 does that mean i can only use 2?
Yep
ok also what are those checkboxes?
You can use two different ones, or the same one twice.
ok
But then you’ll need to take a long rest to regain your spell slots.
what do i put in the sspell expended?
So I'm gonna be dming for the first time with some first timers. I heard lost mine of phandelver is a good one. From what I've found out is that this adventure is obsolete and is part of the phandelver and below. Is it the exact same adventure? Just now you can progress beyond level 3?
That’s to track how many slots you’ve used.
Ill leave it blank for now just in case
So each time you use a 1st-level spell slot, you’d update the number there or add a tally mark or…
because ill be printing it out
Then yeah, leaving it blank sounds best.
ok would you mind reviewing it once im done with my charecter sheet?
Yep! Same adventure but bigger.
Hey guys so I'm a level 1 warlock half elf how do I select me spells?
What's the lore and situation?
Hmmmm guess I'm gonna have to get phandelver and below then! Lol my wife is gonna kill me because I just got the essential kit and the start set for those 2 starter adventures but from what I heard is that that lost mine one everyone loves it
what do i put in attacks and spellcasting 1st page
???
im confused about it
like my attack Bite? my charecter uses a dagger and a bow
What race and class did you select?
We'd need to know what race and class your character is to help figure this out
hello!
I am working on putting together a game for my friends, and I was wondering if anyone has a seperate server for the games that they host and was wondering a good layout for a game server for my party to chat ideas and talk characters and help each other create lore or whatever they need be
I don't think there's a set format. A general channel, some kind of character chanenl, maybe a channel to chat about the games themselves....
yeah thats about what i have right now i think that may just be it!
lizardfolk druid level 1
your Lizardfolk Bite attack, any weapons you get from your starting equipment that you'll be using, and whatever offensive spells you prepare.
I have thunderwave, speak with animals, heal wounds
also what do you mean starting equipment? like in a new dnd game/
?
A level 1 character starts out with certain equipment as detailed on their class page and background
my background is a folk hero and im a druid
Yeah so I’d consult the folk hero background page and Druid class page to see what equipment you start with
so i can choose? how much? theres 3 slots to but equipment
Do I have to write my own spells in the spellcasting part after Cantrips or does the DM do that for you?
Hey! I have never played dnd before where do I go to start learning. I listened to a podcast and might know some random bits and pieces but... actually joining a campaign and creating a character no clue
Same here, I already finished the basics of character creation but I don't know where/how to start
Both pages will tell you if you choose between certain options or get everything. Usually your background will give you everything detailed in its equipment set. Likewise, your class page will usually give a list of 1~4 choices to make
Do you mean make up your own spells or adding spells onto your sheet from features that give you spells?
Peep the channel pins and #learn-to-play for a link to the free basic rules !
would you mind sending a link?
DMS so I can explain better with images
Sweet thanks for the help!
Here is an example for the Druid page in the free rules:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/character-classes#Druid
Sure!
You're generally expected to choose your own spells
you got anything else for starting equipment?
Here is the 2014 Basic rules link to the backgrounds section where the old version of Folk Hero is included:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/personality-and-background#Backgrounds
If you wanted the 2024 version you’d have to have access to the 2024 PHB
Thanks for your help! Im gonna put an add up and hopefully get into a game and hopefully by then ill have a bit more basic understanding!
My group found separate channels for map snapshots/monster illustrations and to record the treasure they actually found made good references, especially because we’d played every other week.
Stormwreck Isle looks to be pretty good, too. Icespire Peak has some great things, but I’m personally not a fan of the job board as a literal thing.
If you feel reasonably creative, Phandelver and Icespire can make a big sandbox for a while. I’m disappointed that the post-Icespire adventures on DDB do not ever appear to have become AL-legal, but that might not be a consideration for you.
You choose your spells as your Spellcasting feature says. You pick an amount of cantrips and spells available to you at your level, from the Druid spell list.
any couple of new comers looking to start a campaign maybe a handful of one shots. ive dm'd a couple of times but im new to both dm me and we can start a little channel
can you have every spell or do you need to choose with a limit?
The spellcasting feature of your specific class will tell you what that limit is. What class were you thinking of going?
Hello semi new player. 1 rule to remember: All spellcasters are legally required to take warcaster. Its the law.
Nice , and I don’t know what that is
Ok So... im trying to wrap my head around all the Planes stuff, so if i understand correctly...
Material plane is the world your in Faerun, Homebrew, whatever
the FeyWild/Shadowfell are Weird/Dark variants of the material plane
and then there is the elemental planes (circle back to this in a moment)
the astral plane connects all the outer planes together like space?
my question lies in the elemental planes. are the elemental planes the same for all material planes or do those change with the material plane, cuz i dont think the astral plane places change right?
sorry if i sound crazy and/or if this is hard to answer...
All the regular worlds are on the material plane.
There’s one material plane.
The astral plane is called a transitive plane, because it serves as a path between the planes.
There is one plane of earth. There is one plane of fire. Etc.
Hey guys, I am gonna be a dungeon master for the first time soon. My group is finishing a campaign right now (it's our first campaign ever), and after that mine will start. I am doing Storm King's Thunder. Can anyone tell me how I best prepare the first few sessions? Of course we'll need to have a session zerom, but after that I don't really know. I've read the first 2 chapters of the book so I think I am informed fairly well, I made some notes too.
I guess I am just looking for tips :)
You have a limit.
Your class will determine which spells you can pick, and your level will determine how many spells you can pick, as appropriate for your level in your class.
I am a complete noob at dming so the advice I have might be very basic
Schedule comes first, second, and third. Games where players can rarely all show up, timezones and life n stuff, are more prone to falling apart. You have to keep scheduling to keep the campaign alive for more than two sessions.
Beef. Be careful if any of your players have beef with each other, they might start going out of their way to mess with each other, often killing the run because they're tired of each other.
And boundaries, if you start to let certain things slide too much, you might slip into "I became the god of time" territory when you didn't mean to. Repeat, do NOT let the players have all the god powers, it does not go well.
Also what is "session zero"?
from my understanding, It's the first session where you all get together and make your characters. My party also entered the town Phandalin (in Dragon Of Icespire Peak), and even started our first quest.
You do a session 0 just to all get familiar with the campaign, each other characters, and maybe make a schedule or something.
Ah, I've been in some campaigns, but never had a session zero. Thanks!
Hello. I'm new here 👋
So am I, hello!
Same, howdy
Session 0 is also where you would go through anything important relating to campaign, like things you should know (for example the DM establishing if there are any specific home rules or such), setting expectations, and overall making sure people are on the same page for the campaign
Huh, not having that is probably why all three of the things I mentioned went wrong with my first campaign lol
Yikes
Sess0, while not mandatory, is almost always useful to set up boundaries and any additional rules after all
Also, does anyone have tips on how to keep the players engaged? 2 of the group I play with are always engaged, but there's one guy that seems to only really like the combat, and gold. He uses his phone a lot, and is easily distracted.
Maybe try connecting the story of his character to the story of the campaign as a whole. Tho if his character doesn't exactly have a best of background, try asking him. Communication is always key
I'm pretty new to DM'ing too, tbf, but I'll give the advice thing a shot:
a) Have all your stuff laid out. If you're working with physical books that means having the monster manual bookmarked with all the monsters you're expecting to use in the session, ideally bookmarks labeled with which encounter. It means having a note somewhere with all the PCs & slots for enemies, so you can write their initiative down. It really helps you keep the pace up! If you're using digital reference stuff like me, have a bunch of tabs open on their own window with all the aforementioned info.
b) I would take a little extra time between session zero and session 1 (like if you're doing weekly games, maybe make it 2 weeks for session zero to one). It gives you time to scheme up alterations to the game and tailor it to your players.
c) Ask the players what they want. I have debriefing after every session. You don't need to do that, but basically ask players what they do & don't like. Might help keep the problem player engaged. He's here for some reason. Might help to ask what that reason is, and try to work with that.
Alright, thanks! I am using a digital version, so I guess I'll be keeping my laptop open the whole time. And taking an extra week is a good suggestion. I'm lucky I have a lot of time tho.
Hoard those tabs. There's no reason to close any tab when DMing
Glad it helped! Also, this is definitely a personal style choice, but I always have a DM screen for the exact reason we all joke about: to let me fudge rolls. I NEVER fudge them in the monsters favor, but I will do it to protect the players. Especially when dealing with new-ish players, it's simply easier to fudge the occasional roll to balance things than it is to redesign every encounter to be 10 percent easier.
Another way to do that (I think) is breaking things up. If you want to keep things slightly easier early on, more threats with less power could do it. That way instead of saying that large fireball missed when it hit, you could say the first goblin attacked successfully and the second got distracted or tripped
Although later on you'll want to do this less, the idea of their characters getting taken out should be uncomfy, not unimaginable
I'm gonna be the DM to my friend group as our first campaign, is there anything that I need to take note of?? I'm already pretty good at improv and story telling as a whole, I can do a few accents, and I have a probably more than basic grasp of DND rules and concepts.
Agreed. Another method I've also used is to have some enemies (not all!) run or surrender when they're low on health or allies. It adds a touch of realism too imo.
May I suggest folks use #dm-discussion for discussing DM things? 😉
... Y'know what, good point
hello :D
I'm gonna be a dm soon for the first time as well. I think you should just get to know the story well. Search the campaign online and maybe look for a guide.
I guess you would want to have the first few quests ready to play, which means knowing what happens, maybe have some encounters ready, and don't forget the enemies. Maybe you guide your friend with this, as they will need to understand the game. If they are stuck, or don't know what they can do you could maybe give them some options.
Yeah this channel is intended more for new to D&D folks get started with learning the core game rules and mechanics.
Is it okay to ask for help as new DM's though?
It's still more a #dm-discussion channel topic so I'll nudge you gently there...
hello!!!
im a bit new so i have a question
does anyone have an idea of how i should understand how dnd works? i've watched a heavily simplified version of dnd, and some parts of dnd campaigns
i dotn really understand how the game works though
Guess I'm following you here! When you say "how the game works" are you referring to the specific rules, the basic flow of the game, or something else?
pretty much the stuff that im allowed and not to do
so yeah the rules basically
and like character making, i dont understand how it works too
How much of the basic rules have you read?
a low amount
i can read more if needed
I can link a few videos give me a sec
https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLPjdPog_vKX1vnjf68Sx2jcq1OtVUSA2i&si=FX-DeagHPMdidPEg here’s a playlist of how to make 4 of the classes in dndbeyond to give you a basic idea
alright thank you thank you!!!
https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLQMqiULo_05P90SzHdyyVIcz4TGZApQ5L&si=E532W6VrL_3RVu5f slightly more indepth playlist going through each step of the process
Ok, the single greatest strength of Tabletop RPGs like D&D is that because the DM can improv the story in real time, you're allowed to try anything. You might fail horribly, but you can try whatever and it's the Dungeon Master's job to decide what happens. Usually they'll tell you to roll dice, based on whatever they decide your request fits into most. Classic example is that if you randomly decide to steal from someone's purse the DM might ask you to roll a sleight of hand check, and if your friend decides to help you by distracting the person with a story, the DM might ask them to make a performance check.
Combat is the place where the rules get substantially more in-depth, that's beyond the scope of this post.
alright i see
thanks for hte explaination
So basically i can roll to do anything no matter how stupid right?
Yep! Well, in fairness, if you (for instance) say your character tries to fly, and your character has no logical method of doing so, the DM will probably just say you jump and fall, no roll required. If you judge what you're trying to be logically possible to attempt, you can try it
No matter how stupid
A DM will typically call for a roll in response to your request to do something instead of a player calling for a roll. Broadly a roll will / should be called when there’s either meaningful consequences of success/failure or meaningful degrees of success/failure.
As Yog said, trying to fly without using a flying ability? Your DM prob won’t let you roll. Try to jump a gap further than you normally can? You’d probably have to roll to do so safely
alright i see thanks dude
and by stupid i didnt mean like flying i meant like hitting a bottle flip or something 😭
That, you could absolutely try! Honestly some of the best moments of D&D are just having light-hearted conversations and moments in-character
thats really why i love dnd, you could have some comedy while havign great story
thanks for the help! it really means alot to me
You're very welcome! Glad we could help out.
I recently bought the DND starter set stormwreck isle and the rule book is very long and complicated. Can someone tell me the general flow of the game and the turns
The general loop of D&D is:
- The DM sets the scene, calling for any necessary rolls
- The players say what their characters want to do.
- The DM calls for any appropriate rolls and narrates the outcome / response of the scene
By turns, do you mean combat rules? In general combat goes:
- Roll for initiative which determines turn order.
- All combatants do their turns in which they have their movement and action, and possibly a bonus action
- Combatants may also have a reaction which they get once per round and refreshes at the start of their turn.
- A round ends once all combatants have had their turn.
- Combat ends when the DM deems an appropriate end condition such as all enemy combatants being dead / fleeing.
In addition here’s some helpful directories to your questions from the Free Rules:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/playing-the-game
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/playing-the-game#Combat
hello may i ask if im required to watch all or the class that i like the most
Any, all your choice
alrighty thanks!!!
Imo there’s no substitute for reading the Free Rules but there’s no issue in skipping the class’s pages for classes you don’t plan on playing. Likewise with the videos if you don’t care about playing say, a bard, you don’t have to watch Bard guides as Enoki said
Ohhhh thank you, thank you
alright so im a bit of a supporter player so, would a cleric be a good idea for a beginner?
It’s more complex compared to some other classes, but if you’re interested in the class it’ll be a good one for you
oh well i see
Do you reccomend any other classes that would be easy to understand as a beginner?
Fighter and Barbarian generally have less decisions to make, but again you won’t have a very good time if you aren’t interested in playing them
its not that im not intrested, i like being a damage player
But i wanted to go through with beign a support because i want to have less pressure on me
i really dont wanna mess up something thats all
Cleric will do you just fine then. Their support can be as useful and as simple as casting Bless (in combat) or Guidance (out of combat)
If you do choose Cleric, my biggest advice is to not let people pidgeonhole you into being just a “healer.” While they do get the most healing spells/abilities the Cleric chassis has a lot of diversity and the most subclasses to truly make your build exactly how you want it
alright then, aferall i prefer being a support but not jus twith heals
How does one get their saving throws for a character? I’ve been told it’s the only thing I’m missing from my sheet
wow makign a characte ris alot more complicate dthan i though
pretty fun though
Your saving throws will be equal to your ability modifier + PB (if proficient) + any specific bonuses (I.e. if a magic item boosts saves such as a ring of protection)
Ohhh oki^^ thank you google confused me
To be frank there is way less pressure when you are a fighter or a barbarian because your job is simple: hit things hard and be tough. Caster classes on the other hard can be sometimes pretty stressful due to amount of options they have and how impactful a spell choice can be.
This is the great pradox of DnD: the most complex and unforgiving classes are supports while the damage dealers are pretty simple in general.
Heck, if they were doing it idly in the middle of a conversation with an NPC, I just might have them make a Dex (Persuasion) check to see if the NPC were impressed.
that makes much mroe sense
ill go with fighter for some dexterity thanks though
Probably I'd just do a sleight of hand check to see if they land it or not, and then decide on my own whether the NPC is the type to be impressed by a bottle flip.
but do i have to make like
an insanely detailed backstory etc etc?
That's up to the DM. Probably not, though. They have to read it, and most folks won't want to make a ton more work for themselves. Plus, the real meat of your character's story is the adventure ahead, not behind.
Im not really too creative so this really helps thanks!!!
You might be expected to have some backstory, but it depends on the table. These are the kind of conversations that might happen in session zero, prior to actually playing.
i understand having a backstory since afterall it makes it more fun
I’m pretty new and I can’t find anyone in my area that actually plays DND, does anyone have advice on how to actually find a DM and other players?
Are you strictly trying to play in person?
Backstory: less is more, IMO. Enough to answer “who are you,” “what do you want,” “where are you going from here,” and “why NOW?”
I mean I’ve seen things like Roll 20, but idk if there any good
wow this makes it way mroe simpler, ill try to piece out a backstory of that
really thanks alot for the help
Do note that the last one could be part of what happens at the table.
100 percent agree. Sometimes, you can also add a vaguely defined plot hook or NPC to give the DM an extra toy to play with, but that's optional and shouldn't go too far.
There are tons of online venues for finding a game. Roll20 is plenty popular, but how good a game you'll find is going to come down to compatibility. We have channels here for finding folks. #find-a-game is where to start.
And some classes (Warlock, I’m looking at you) have them baked in.
Thanks
I attempted to make a character from a game who's a half vamp, but I'm too broke to get the book with dhampirs, so what I do? Do I just homebrew my own race cuz I was gonna use dhampir as a substitute but now I can't
The character being a bloodfiend from a game called Limbus company
Also bit of a different question should I make up my own patron or should I use something known? Because I don’t think it’s a good idea to just say my patron is this creature
You could try to find a game with someone with access to that content, but I'd recommend coming up with other character concepts. The more character concepts you have, the more any one of them will fit any given game, instead of trying to find the exact right fit.
Thanks fam, appreciate the advice mate
Cgcold, under the 2024 rule set, I'd say "don't bother to specify" because you don't really specify them mechanically until level 3.
I have a question; For my first campaign, I am planning on adding an enemy that can shapeshift, the problem is that I don't know if shapeshifting would cost an Action or a Bonus Action in DND
For doppelgangers and changelings, shapeshifting uses an Action.
If you're looking for advice on building your own creatures, check in #homebrew . If you're looking for recommendations on creatures that already exist to use in your game, try #dm-discussion !
Ohhh I see I see
So, I am the current DM, and I wanna make a name for my campaign. But here's the thing, I'm having a bit of trouble, does anyone have any suggestions? The whole plot is that three of the biggest kingdoms, made of different races, wanna take over the other kingdoms and the great empire, so they make their OWN empire and the players' party is meant to stop them or help them. It was WWII inspired tbh.
Age of the Warring States?
(I mean, Chinese history has both a Warring States era and a War of the Three Kingdoms or something to that effect)
What dnd races can fly? Other than Aarakocra and Aasimar.
Ohh welcome!
Fairy and Owlin both have an innate flight speed. An old variant species of Tiefling can as well. Just like Aasimar, Dragonborn can fly for short amounts of time at higher levels.
Alrighttt thanksss

Hi
howdy
how are ya?
Hello everyone:)
wsp
My cleric character just died as lv 2 because another newcomer didn't know healing word was a bonus action. We really need a cleric in the party and I'm annoyed I didn't get to have my subclass. Is there any way other than resurrection ig to like do the "twin brother" thing without it being cliche and cringe? We tried to have my god intervene twice on a d20 DC 11 and d100 DC 70 and failed both.
Do you need a cleric specifically, or just somebody who can handle heal/buff?
A few quick ideas:
- Drag them to the nearest city and hire a spellcaster to revive them
- Make a deal with a nearby hag coven
- Plunder an ancient temple in search of a Resurrection spell scroll
The party has to go pull an Orpheus. Make an adventure out of it.
I mean o really wanted to play twilight cleric but with the 2024 rules I didn't get it since I was only LV 2
Given that, I really like the idea of making the party have to go do the Orpheus thing - a trip into the/an underworld/Outer Plane where they get set a task by a psychopomp deity to retrieve the dead character's soul and bring it back to the body.
How do we play
yeah i've been wondering the same thing
#learn-to-play can get you started with the basics!
But did either of you have any specific questions?
yes actually i was, how do i start making my character? i have a idea but i'm not sure how to do stats or anything like that
Hey, I was wondering how I could find a group to play DND with?
Are you using dnd beyond to make character?
not currently but i will if thats the best thing to do, i'm sorry im completely new to the game and havn't been able to look into it much
Chapter two in the Free Rules does a good job of walking through all the steps.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/creating-a-character
Did you have a certain kind of character in mind?
#find-a-game can point you toward the available groups here
So is a dual class character common?
i wanted a paladdin or something similar to one if possible
Like, monk/rogue?
Yeah, it’s called multiclassing.
Each time you level up, you can choose which class to add your new level in.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/creating-a-character#Multiclassing
You’re generally trading power for versatility.
Paladins are fun!
yeah once i heard about them i was excited to make my own
Dnd beyond is really easy to make characters with, it goes step by step and you can make like 6 characters for free I think.
awsome! im def gonna use it
Helloo👋
I'm new to DnD but just trying to get a better understanding of how it works/where to find groups/etc. Hoping to do something maybe online through a discord call, I checked out rolls20 and it's extremely overwhelming lol.
Any advice to starting out? Or maybe how to learn how to use rolls20? Honestly not sure where to start.
Discord is definitely an easier start, I agree with you that Roll20 is a little much at first. Try #find-a-game , plus you can look up local adventures leagues or game stores in your area that can hook you up with in-person play.
Just find some players and run in any way suitable for you. When you come up with your actual needs, you'll find out which tool for game sessions you need.
But yeah, Discord+Roll20/Owlbear Rodeo are good to go.
Okay thanks, sounds good, I'm kinda limited to online because of some health stuff but I'll look owlbear rodeo and see if maybe that's less daunting then rolls20
These days I run games just over discord and I've even done zoom in the past
There's a lot of different options
I don't even use a vtt I just scribble maps and run theatre of the mind lol
I run games over discord
But yeah whatever works best 😃 I used owlbear rodeo before and it was quick and easy to use.
Inkarnate is fun for creating world maps and dungeon maps
is there a rule channel i can look at? i have a question but i don't how to ask it without getting in trouble. its nothing bad i just wanna double check in case it is against the rules or anything.
If you mean the rules of the server, #rules
If you mean the rules of the game #dnd-rules
