Games can be found in #find-a-game (read the instructions in the channel) although they aren’t hosted on this server. In my experience most games are beginner friendly even if they aren’t explicitly advertised as such. Thus, it’s always good to ask when looking to join a game
And not necessarily evenly balanced among the other player characters in the game.
Thanks :))
I can recommend a way of rolling stats in that case, have your party each roll one result, have the 6 results added and that's the array everyone uses
Fair
Hey there! What checks can I use the Warlocks Pact of the Talisman on?
Thanks. I'm working through everything in the learning to play channel when I have time. My biggest fear right now is time. Haha. I just don't know if I have the time to play.
Nobody does @smoky trout lol. The biggest evil in D&D is scheduling. Ask anyone who plays lol
Where is the learn to play channel?
It wasn't showing up for me at first until I chose to see all channels.
I have arrived
Hello! I'm a teenager, completely new to DnD, and have spent the past hour or so simply taking a look at whatever i can find (looked at most of the stuff in #learn-to-play). I went on DnD Beyond and made myself a rough character sheet, or at least i think it qualifies as that (I'm still missing a backstory, am a bit unsatisfied with my background because I'm unsure what i want to do with my character).
From what I've seen there's many different versions of DnD (e4,e5, AL etc.) and have no clue which is best for beginners, or even what the differences are.
For background, I'm very vaguely familiar with DnD from the internet, and want to try getting into the game. I don't own any real life DnD equipment, books, or paid stuff.
Are there any experienced players that can show me the ropes, or have a spare slot in a game I can spectate/join? Sorry in advance if any of the things i said here are obvious and I'm just silly.
You want to start with Fifth Edition. Don't worry about Adventurer's League for now, that's a way to organise games. The Basic Rules will start you off fine.
So to address your stuff one by one:
If you want feedback or help developing a character there’s #character-discussion
5e is the most recent and popular edition of D&D, which is getting a rules refresh this year. AL is short for Adventurer’s League, which is WotC (owners of D&D) official organized play. Previous editions have a lot of differences, and they’re not cross-compatible even though they share a lot of DNA. I would compare it to the old cRPG Fallout games vs the Bethesda Era Fallouts.
As for finding a game, #find-a-game is the place in this server, though we don’t actually host games here.
Thank you! Both your help is greatly appreciated. once I have found a group, where do I play? it might seem like a stupid question, I've seen there's websites like Roll20, but im not sure if its suited for playing DnD
Groups can be found here in #looking-for-players , Roll20, LFG on Reddit, and various other forums. Roll20 offers a virtual tabletop (VTT) to simulate the in-person experience with shared images, such as maps and characters. Other alternatives exist ( #third-party for more).
thank you!
D&D can be played in person or online. If you want to play online you’ll probably encounter or require at least one of these tools:
- Virtual TableTop (VTT). A website or program that is designed to simulate table play by displaying maps, notes, etc. Roll20 is a common VTT, others include FoundryVTT and Owlbear Rodeo.
- Digital Character Sheet. As the name implies, a way to have your character sheet online. D&DBeyond is one example. Some sites like roll20 have their own sheet integration, or have plugins to connect your sheet to a VTT.
- Dice Roller. Something to roll dice when you need it. Many VTT have this functionality, as well as D&DBeyond itself.
- Digital Communications. Just a way for text or voice chat, like Discord. Video requirements in my experience is extremely uncommon.
Don't fuss too much about being new. Read over the Basic Rules, get an idea of how to put a character together and roll dice then go for it.
This is helpful because I’m a new dm and I’m doing it online
Should I expect a custom race
does anyone know how I can import a character sheet i made in DnD Beyond to Roll20?
It's up to you whether you want to accept one or not
Fwiw I DMd a full game on DND beyond with maps and towns last night it was great
I would generally recommend no if you're new
I'd ask in #third-party or check Roll20's help section for that.
And I don't believe there's any official way to import from DDB to Roll20. You may be able to find a third party method or it's easy enough to just copy/paste
So DnD Beyond is the recommend site to create characters. Correct? I'm in the very beginning of creation and I'm already lost on the second page. Character preferences. Are there recommendations or requirements of what options to choose? Sources? Partnered content? Optional features? Advancement type: milestone or XP? Hit point type: Fixed or Manual?
If you're not in a campaign don't worry about that stuff yet. However I recommend avoiding partnered content and homebrew for now.
Are you dming or playing your first time? If it’s playing then some of those won’t really matter to you yet, such as leveling and the like. Talk to your dm to learn more about those things
Playing for the very first time. So I need to find a game/DM before creating a character?
It’s smart to. Every dm has their own rules and way to play. So don’t overwhelm yourself too much with mechanics rn. While you wait for a dm, maybe look into the races and stories, help yourself brainstorm a cool character idea then come here or to your dm to help you make it
You don’t strictly need to. Imo it’s great practice for learning the rules, especially if you create as you read through the basics
Hiii, I’ve never played dnd but I’d really love to get into this! Do people know good guides to get started?
I would download and read the free basic PDF ruleset. Despite its name it has everything you need to play. A good DM will be able to fill in the rest
You can find those Basic Rules here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
hi
#learn-to-play has some other helpful starter info, too.
blithering idiot here who has only had experience running the old 3e fast play games.
Also how do I add the Conductor class to my discord roles
Don’t think that’s a thing in this server
Still not a thing for here, do you need help with the basics of 5e?
well i'm interested when the new rulebooks come out
figure that's a good time to jump in
The Player’s Handbook is first, on September 17th.
Are they planning to have blithering idiot type starter sets and adventures
Local game stores in US/CAN will have it up to two weeks early (Sept. 3).
yeah I noticed there's a event first week of september
is that a good place to start if I can find one of those
Master Tier subscribers on D&D Beyond can also get it as early as Sept. 3.
Yeah I'm also very interesetd in online play
like running it online
I know they support things like fantasy grounds and roll20 but they also have their own digital platform that will go into beta soon?
waits for people to get his conductor joke
I kinda hope they do something like they did at the start of 5e and 4e
they had a series of linked adventures that took players from 1st level to max level
And they are backwards compatible so your table can choose to mix and match rules/ player level etc.
D&D Beyond did release their Maps tool about a year ago.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/games
At least from my understanding
There’s also a 3D one in the works called Project Sigil. You can sign up for the beta here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/project-sigil
Yeah I heard that. but still I would hope they would use this opportunity to give people a good entry point for running adventures and stuff not just oh here's a updated ruleset now use the stuff from the past 10 years and figure it out yourself.
yeah i signed up for that tuna 🙂
The new phb supposedly goes over a lot more vocabulary and describing how to play than the original 2014 phb. We just haven’t seen those portions yet because WoTC have been monitoring all creators and sources they’ve given access to the book
yeah well we'll find out very soon
If you have any specific questions about them, you’re welcome to ask in https://discord.com/channels/516367331358801950/1252622903669686342
If you want wacky fun advice the crap guide series is a fun place to start. Look up crap guide to dnd for a funnier and less serious guide
thanks!
Ive been a dm for a while but i never got an actual book just used websites for monsters. What is a good bestiary and are there any that cover most monsters or at least a large enough amount so i can use it for most random battles
I believe this should filter to the free monsters on Beyond:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/monsters?filter-type=0&filter-search=&filter-cr-min=&filter-cr-max=&filter-armor-class-min=&filter-armor-class-max=&filter-average-hp-min=&filter-average-hp-max=&filter-is-legendary=&filter-is-mythic=&filter-has-lair=&filter-source=1&filter-partnered-content=f
In terms of actual publications, you want the Monster Manual.
So how do we find a DM in the find-a-dm channel? I see where people have posted threads wih their info, but I'm not sure how to do that.
Nevermind. Reading through the find a game channel now.
Thanks. Other than the monster manual are there any more books full of monsters. I like making my own adventures so i dont use the book settings. Even a book with stuff other than monsters like races/classes or items
You can also use places like Reddit, I know a friend of mine got some players from there
Would a level 3 paladin have lay on hands even if its a level 1 feature
Can u stack the features
You don't lose features as you level up.
Also why dont paladins have a spells known slot or a sorcery poimts slot
What if u start at level 3
You get everything from the first two levels as well.
Ooh okay
Each class feature lists the minimum level you must be in that class to have that feature
Lvl 3 Paladins only have 3 first level slots but it doesnt say how many spells i know
Is it unlimited?
Do i know every spell
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/classes#Paladin
The table here has the details for spells.
Paladins prepare their spells. Certain classes learn their spells and certain classes prepare them. Your 1st level spellcasting feature describes how preparing a spell works, but to make a long story short, you know the entire paladin spell list, but there is a limited number you can prepare each day. You can only cast the spells that are prepared. When you finish a long rest, you can change what spells you have prepared
Sorcery Points are exclusive to the sorcerer class. It is their defining feature. No other class gets them
Ooh so basically like meal preping 3 meals from a cook book
I can always make different meals everyday
Ok cool
Not exactly, but kinda
What does spell levels do does a higher level mean it does more damage
Primarily, it will be used to cast higher level spells. If a spell says it is a 2nd level spell, that means you need to use a 2nd level spell slot (or higher) to cast it
Some spells deal more damage if you expend a higher level spell slot to cast it. Not all of them though. You have to read the spell's description to find out
Okay i see and for the warlock class level 3 why is it i know 4 spells but can only cast 2
Warlocks are a bit of a special case. Every other class that has spell slots only gets them back when they take a long rest. Warlock gets their spell slots back when they take a short rest. So they have less total spell slots to make up for that
Rest for an hour instead of eight.
a short rest is 1 hour
a long rest is 8 hours
Ok i think i get it now just one more thing
For sacred oaths i keep finding a bunch of differemt ones on different websites but where do i find the official ones
D&D Beyond is the best website for viewing official game content because its owned by the company that makes the game, but when you first go to the website, there will only be 1 subclass for each class. That is because these are the subclasses that are included in the free basic rules. To see the rest of the content, you must purchase the rulebook that content was published it.
You can also buy the books IRL, if you like physical books, but it sounds like you wanted a digital option
Okay i get it how many paladin oaths are there
There are 9 official ones, if my count is correct
Okay, thank you for the help
My pleasure
Hello
My friends and i decided to start playing dnd, I got both dm's and players handbook but i cant figure out how movement works in dnd. I understand that you imagine it (as the dm) and guide your players through but i find it confusing sometimes. Any tips or rules?
Usually movement only matters when there's combat and you need to decide how far or close creatures are to each other and the positional relationship between them.
You can use maps and tokens to help with defining that and determining movement spacing.
A creature can move it's movement speed during it's turn in combat. Difficult terrain reduces this speed by half.
A creature could also take the Dash action on it's turn and move it's speed again. So let's say a creature with normally 30 feet of movement takes the Dash action. They now move up to 60 feet on their turn.
Movement is also relevant when climbing or swimming, or deciding how quickly you're moving over land for extended periods of time: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/adventuring#Movement
Ah thanks guys
Omg you do programming
no i dont
Do you mean as in picking your class for your character? Or creating your own?
For picking a class, character making sites like D&D Beyond will have it as part of the character creator
For making your own, that's called homebrew, and #homebrew would be a proper place to ask about that
i just said that cuz funny
My bad👍
alr ty bro
Hmm
I feel like I have a decent understanding of dnd from the videos I’m watched but I’m still relatively new
Any tips?

?tag new online
thanks
Hello I have a question, I´m a newish DM and I wanted to ask. The wording in Magic Misile doesn´t mention anything about making a ranged attack. Does that mean that it hits without rolling for attack, only roll for damage?
Yep, it just hits.
thanks c:
I'm new to DND and would love to learn more!! I want to start an online game with people or join one!

hello ! im super new to d&d and i just want some tips for starting off… what things should i do to make the experience better as a player ? what do i communixate to dm and what do i keep hidden? Etc etc!
Welcome! You usually wouldn’t keep anything hidden from the DM typically.
Good evening :). I have not rly knowledge about Dnd, but i play a kender in live aktion roleplays like the Conquest of Mythodea. But i want to play dnd or learn it 🙂
In my experience you shouldn’t do that to players either, as D&D is generally a cooperative game. Any “secrets” should generally be secrets to the PCs only.
A good player should be respectful, cooperative, and have fun with the character they play. Really the same expected behavior for having fun at any group social activity
Welcome! I would check out the pins as well as #learn-to-play to get started!
so... they only get like 2 spell slots total?
They get more as they level up, but they have only 2 for most of the early levels
The Warlock Table shows how many spell slots they have, and what level those spell slots are.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/7-warlock#TheWarlockTable
oooof
they would be better if they had more during the early levels
Warlocks don’t rely on leveled spells as much as the other casters since their spell progression is different
Not really, since warlocks are so different they’re very powerful without as much need for spell slots
hello
Hello
what is an artificer
A dnd class
what makes it different from a wizard
A lot of their magic is manifested through the magical items they create (but they still can cast spells).
Wizards learn magic through books/scrolls
yeah artificers get less spells and spell slots but more custimization options
If a wizard is an architect, an artificer is an engineer
do they create things through spells that are limited or do they actually create stuff like blacksmiths
More the other way around
They produce spells and spell like effects through the things they create
so they create magic items?
From a specific list of items, yeah, pretty much.
yeah they are the magic item class
Any suggestion on writing a good backstory for a dragonborn barbarian?
Can artificers make things blow up in any way?
This would better fit in #character-discussion but focus on a short concise backstory that describes where your character came from, what connections they have to your DM's world/setting, and then why they are now adventuring instead of staying safe at home.
An artillerist at higher levels can explode their eldritch canon.
Yeah, people think "artificer = explosion" but that really doesn't happen much
The Artillerist artificer also gets some more explodey spells in their additional spells like shatter and fireball
You could/should flavor them as arcane grenades
Thank you, I will make sure to ask questions like that in the character discussion. I appreciate it
how do things like the aberrant mind sorcerer getting spells through it's class feature work?
like, do they count as the spells i know so I can't use all them at once without forgoing my actual sorcerer spells?
what stat does artificer use for spellcasting
Hi everyone, I'm new here. I'm looking for a game but not as a DM and there doesn't seem to be a command looking for both a group and a DM to play with so I don't really know what to do
INT is the spellcasting stat for artificers
Hugest double take of my life
I tried to tell them, they didn’t believe me
Welcome! You can check #find-a-game for further instructions on looking for a group, but #looking-for-players is the place to apply to games using this server
also as a side note, you should edit your post to exclude your age, it’s against server rules
Oh, sorry about that
The additional spells from aberrant mind sorcerer are known on top of the base class spells
And i have an odd feeling my choice of words will not be good for a server like this
In the main server
what other stats are important to artificers
Constitution for HP, dexterity for AC and in some cases attacks
The ones that are generally important to characters, which is usually some mix of dex, con, and wis
And yeah a bit of Wis for wisdom saves and perception is nice
Hello. I recently got the dragon of ice spire peak starter kit and I’m going to be a DM for two people and I know absolutely nothing about being a DM where do I start learning?
?newdm
- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.
- Learn how to be a Dungeon Master with this YouTube video or D&D Beyond article.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- Decide what kind of campaign you want to run. Here’s a few good options for new DMs.
- Get advice from your fellow Dungeon Masters in #dm-discussion and #dm-world-building.
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
The bot posts above provide good places learn how to DM. For more advice feel free to stop by #dm-discussion
You can also learn a lot about DMing from this series by Matthew Colville: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlUk42GiU2guNzWBzxn7hs8MaV7ELLCP_
This series offers some amazing advice, including how to craft your own adventures and the basics of game design.
This video by PointyHat covers aspects of being DMing that often gets overlooked: https://youtu.be/yUhWlfH68L4
how do you make the stats for the character sheet based on your race? i have a homebrew class atm and human race
Stats are generated by either Point Buy, Standard Array, or Rolling (4d6 drop lowest). Point Buy or Standard Array is recommended to use for your first character as that’s more universally acceptable.
You can get further details from this section of the basic rules:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/step-by-step-characters#3DetermineAbilityScores
Hey, I'm a new DM and I have a group of almost 10 ppl. I want to start with the Dragons Stormwreck Isle adventure which is for 5 ppl. I'm trying to find a way to include someway all of them. I thought of doing the campaign twice, once with 5 of them and then again with the other 5 remaining. Is this a good way to include them all?
Yes split the group, 10 people is too much both for the DM to balance for and for the players to get adequate spotlight
Hey, guys! Being a huge fan of RP I've been looking to get into D&D, but I do feel a bit overwhelmed about all the lore & mechanics. Whilst everything is decently simple to understand, there is simply a lot of stuff to cover. So I was wondering where should I start? I don't have a party of people to play with, so I will most likely just end up searching for one online.
Should I get my head over all the info out there or would it be better to learn somewhat on the go? Like, what's even the general approach I should take, being a player without a party?
Well you can ignore the lore for now, that's something that isn't needed to know in order to play and also will change based on the campaign you play in
For mechanics, check out the chapters in the basic rules on Character Creation, Using Ability Scores, and Combat
Those three chapters cover the vast majority of the essential rules
What's a community game..?
Large communities of DMs and players were it’s one whole world with lots of different parties, sometimes called a westmarch.
Hello everyone, I'm new to the D&D world and i real to learn everything about it, if someone can help me understand everything about the game feel free to DM me, that would be much appreciated
@ember pond Rather than asking people to PM you to help you understand
everything
, maybe start with #learn-to-play then come back here and ask any questions you have
Thx for the heads up
Can anyone explane how unlocking things on dnd beyond works?
?books
There are four ways to access content on D&D Beyond that you may have in your physical books
- Purchase the full digital book from the marketplace
- Purchase a digital/physical bundle from the marketplace
- Join a DnDBeyond campaign with someone who already owns the book where content sharing has been enabled
- Use the homebrew tools to copy the content from your physical book into D&D Beyond. Note: Do not publish any content copied in this way, it is for personal use only
If you buy a book on DnDBeyond, it unlocks using the things within that book for the character builder tool and other tools that DnDBeyond provides.
So if a book provides additional races/species, subclasses, spells, or items - you can then use those on your characters.
Is there a list on witch book has witch items? And dos things from the difrent editions work together? So if I buy things from 5e do they work in 6e?
There is no 6e - the 2024 books are still 5th edition and 2014 material will work with the 2024 books with only minor adpatations (which the 2024 books provide guidance on).
There isn't really a list of what every book has beyond what's listed in the marketplace.
And subscribing only unlocks hombrew and unlomited caracters and encounter creation right?
And monthly subscriber perks like digital dice, character sheet frames and backgrounds, and early access to new tools being developed - but yes. Subscribing does not unlock books.
Thats been a great help trying to figure out what to buy for a friend group thats talking about starting

Hi, I find myself here because I want to create a character based on another character, but I need to workshop how to create a version of the character fit for the setting
Prob for #character-discussion but if it’s a character from another media source don’t try to do a 100% copy of them, get the general flavour of the character but put your own twist on them

ok and do i or the guy who is telling the story have to make up the whole story beforehand or is he allowed to make stuff up as we go
the guy telling the story might make up some parts of the story beforehand, or all of it, and part of the process is making stuf up as you guys go
The most typical kind of play is that a Dungeon Master (DM) will gather a party of players (PCs) for a game. Normally the DM will have prepared one or more adventures for the party to engage with. Once you're all set, you bring the character you're playing and see what happens.
Because the game usually requires a deal of preparation work to play well, you'll normally find the way to get the most out of it is to go along with whatever scenario the DM presents for you.
Even then, you’ll inevitably try something they didn’t expect, so they’ll end up improvising a bit regardless. 😅
for my first game i think im gonna find a story online and make up random characters
There are some good starter adventures like Peril in Pinebrook that can help ease you and your players into the game, and give you an idea of how an adventure can be laid out.
does somebody wann help me create a character so i could play my first game?😅
im down
yaaaaaaaaaay, how do we wanna do this, just in a vc?
i cant vc rn since im at uni between classes but i can dm you and stuff
Hi, when I'm making my character, can I give them any class, race, power and backstory?
i believe you're supposed to roll for the abilities
You'd typically choose from any official class or race. Your DM may restrict some of those options or permit additional ones.
There is a list of classes and races that you can choose from. Your powers are based off what class and race you choose. You can create any backstory you want, but the point of your backstory is to explain the powers and abilities you chose during character creation. You can't gain new powers, abilities, or items by writing them into your backstory
ahh okay, is someone willing to read the character i made?
You can post a link to your character sheet in #character-discussion
I just wrote it down lol, where do I get a character sheet
If you don't have a character sheet, what did you write down? Just the backstory?
yes and the class and race and stuff
you can use D&D beyond
the free version is good, and will guide you through the character making process
and it explains as you go so you know what everything means.
There's lots of ways/places you could get a character sheet. If you just google it you'll have several options
ah thanks! will i still be able to choose every class and race?
theres a bunch of races to choose from ~ i think classes are a bit more limited. i dont have the site open in front of me to confirm though
i might have that backward.
D&D Beyond provides you with access to the free races, classes, and subclasses for free, but you'll need to purchase the digital books through their website to unlock the additional options from those books

Hey guys just wondering if it would be a better idea to go for a paid dm for someone with no experience or just community games and what not?
Thx!
I’d like to know the answer to that too
There is no "better" or "worse" idea when it comes to paid games
But I suppose it’s better to pay?
It's just another way to play (and for DMs to make a job out of running D&D)
Got it
People are often welcoming of new players, and the virtue of paying for D&D depends entirely on how much is being charged and how much disposable income you have
For newcomers it is generally recommended try out the hobby with the free resources before investing any money.
While a paid DM is more likely to provide extra things like any other service. As Davyd mentioned, the community is often welcoming to new players.
If you do go the paid DM route, start with a single session adventure that is catered towards new players.
Total noob saying hi. 😁 I'm already in a friend's upcoming campaign. Just trying to learn what I can before it begins.
Hello I'm new to D&D
I've played in one campaign before but don't know pretty much anything

hiya, im a beginner just trying to get some practice in before i try to run my own game
i think that the best way to understand the rules is probably to actually put them into practice
ok hi, I've played before but with very little experience I'm looking for a campaign to join, I'm in Texas/CST and have a whole character ready, just need to figure out stats.
If you pop down the standard array for starters, you'll be able to define your priorities even if your DM asks for another method.
ok thanks, I'll get to it
Hi, I just got into D&D and I'm really hoping to play it ^^
DMS - Open
Friend requests - NO
alright I finished it, mind if I dm it to you?
Share it in #character-discussion !
hi i am new to dnd and havent played any game before because of me being unable to find group and also because of me not having a mic or camera
hi, i have never once played dnd and pretty much know nothing about it. is it something im able to learn as i play?
Some groups would be fine taking on someone with no knowledge, but I would say you increase your chances of being welcomed to a table if you take some time to learn some of the rules beforehand!
You might be interested in play-by-post (aka text-based) play, then!
can work
How can I search for begineer friendly campaigns or oneshots?
You can search #looking-for-players by keywords like beginner or newcomer, but that assumes folks have specified in their ads. My suggestion is to just reach out to the DM who posted an ad that intrigues you and ask if their game is newbie-friendly!
Hello! Im semi-new to DnD. Im mostly wanting to learn more about the lore and im looking to join a group.
Ohh alright! Thanks!
WOW, THAT TOOK A WHILE. Thank you though, that helped in understanding!

Does anyone have any tips for DMing for the first time? I don't know if I plan to do it right away, as I'd like to play a couple more sessions first but. I'd like to gather some advice for when I do eventually do it
Read over this guide (https://howtogm.guide/) and watch through the first few videos of Matt Colville's "Running the Game" YouTube series (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlUk42GiU2guNzWBzxn7hs8MaV7ELLCP_). His thesis is that running the game is easy (or at least easier than it's often made out to be) and fun, and his videos help folks see that for themselves.
I have some DM advice here: #dnd-newcomers message

Any DnD campaigns I can spectate to get a grasp on some basics?
There are lots of live streams and youtube videos of people playing D&D
There's plenty of pre-recorded videos online!
Common recommendations are Critical Role and Dimension 20.
D&D is its own category on Twitch! https://www.twitch.tv/directory/category/dungeons-and-dragons
Thanks!

Any specific streamers that interact with the audience if they ask questions?
I kinda want to "shadow" DnD players
I don't watch much live actual plays, but I've never seen one that notices the chat much. Here and there maybe, but not to the point of answering questions.
Do you have a local game store or library? They may have tabletop programming you can drop in on.
There's also the learn-to-play sessions through the virtual weekends (see the Events tab in the server)!
I don't think it's going to be very likely to find a table to watch that answers audience questions of any sort. DnD is a pretty complex game that requires a lot of focus for both the players and the DM, and it'd delay the actual play considerably if they were taking questions from watchers.
Mhm
how do i join a game, or look for someone hosting one?

I'll try that
Do they require actually playing though?
You'd have to look through yourself to find out!
Question: Can player characters be blind? If so, what are the downsides? If not, is there anything similar?
Asside from daily life changes, if going by the blinded condition they auto fail ability checks that rely on sight, attacks against them have advantage and they themselves have disadvantage on attacks
but you can ofc come up with lore reasons for them to not have the disadvantages
5e has a "blinded condition" which it uses to represent what happens if you are in total darkness or can't see for any reason. There are no official rules in the character creation process for giving your PC a disability, but if your character were to be blind, they would simply have that blinded condition permanently. This would be a pretty MASSIVE hinderance in gameplay, obviously. If you wanted to do this, it would be something to discuss with your DM. It might require special permission from them and maybe even the rest of the other players as well, because it would be disruptive to everyone, and not everyone may be comfortable with that type of story and gameplay. I can certainly understand the desire to represent disabilities in your game, but since the game wasn't build or designed with that in mind, it can be quite difficult to make it work and be fun for everyone involved
Here is a link to the rules for the blinded condition:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/appendix-a-conditions#Blinded
Yeah, that's fair. Thank you!
Not to be annoying, but I have another question: Can a PC die in DND, and if so, what happens upon death? Is it just, like, forced spectator mode?
PCs can die, yes. If that happens, the player who's character died will make another character and the DM and players will work together to find a natural way to introduce this new character into the party, wherever and whenever it makes sense for the story
There is magic that can bring people back from the dead as well, so this is typically only an issue at lower levels
Yes a PC can die id they fail 3 death saves and from there you have a few choices. 1 is set scroll of revivify in a near dungeon and the dead Pc watches until they can bring jt back and use it. 2 is they make a new character and go from there
Could you possibly carry the dead body until you find something that can revivify it?
You could, yes. Though the magic that brings people back from the dead has a time limit
Revivify is a 3rd level spell, and has a time limit of 1 minute after death
Raise Dead is a 5th level spell, and has a time limit of 10 days after death
Resurrection is a 7th level spell and has a time limit of 100 years after death
True Resurrection is a 9th level spell and has a time limit of 200 years after death
And obviously, the higher a spell's level is, the hard it is to find, the more expensive it would be to pay for, and the higher level your characters must be to use it themselves
That is actually really cool.
as a wizard am i able to learn spells that i am unable to cast? I am lvl 4 and want to learn a 3 lvl spell even if i cant cast it.
You cannot add a spell to your spellbook if you do not have the spell slots to cast it
When you find a wizard spell of 1st level or higher, you can add it to your spellbook if it is of a spell level you can prepare and if you can spare the time to decipher and copy it.
ok, what if i dont learn a spell at lvl 4 and then learn 2 spells at lvl 5. is that possible
wizards always learn 2 spells when they level up. That's how the class works
oh ok thanks.
One last question, I swear: Let's say that I have a group that are playing for laughs. One of them dies and we refuse to revive them for, say, 10 days. If we revive them 10 days after death, are they still decomposed? Or do they come back as they did when they died?
DM can decide how things work in their game
So if the DM wished it, we could run around with a skeleton as a PC?
Potentially
That is metal af.
The spells that revive the dead heal their target to some degree, but how much they heal is based on the spell. Revivify and Raise Dead repair surface injuries but still need the body to be in tact. Resurrection and True Resurrection can build an entirely new body from scratch
Ah, okay. Thank you for the responses! Do you get many weird questions about DND?
The entire point of this channel is to answer people's questions and help them understand how the game works. So, its pretty normal to have conversations like this, yeah
Oh, I'll have to look for some loopholes then!
It’s really hard to find a DM…
Oh absolutely. I wouldn't appreciate it if it was done to me, I'll be making sure to be kind to the DM.
Or be a player
Most of these don't even actually work within the rules. People just misunderstand things
it definitely takes time. It's a problem of numbers - there are so many more players out there than DMs that can take them.
Speaking of which I dm’d you 🫡
Please try to condense your thoughts into one posts with multiple lines. One line at a time gets a bit spammy and can be interrupted by others which breaks apart what you might be trying to convey.
I can tell. This game is really popular.
Looks like there needs to be a DM camp
Raising new DM’s!
DND should host an event where they are looking to raise new DMS and put the sourcebooks on discount making them like 5-10$ only if you join the event.
Might help!
LOL
Adventure's League is a good opportunity for learning.
perhaps not for everyone. But a lot of people use it and have a very good time. Having folks using the same set of rules allows for consistency across tables, which, when you are running a massive group with lots of DMs, is a good thing.
Other groups like Baldman Gaming also host DMs at tables at a lot of conventions
Was also going to mention Baldman Gaming. They also host virtual weekends!
It can be helpful since it's often a way to regularly meet with other players and DMs, gives an opportunity to chat and learn as a group
users are allowed to have civil discussions and differing opinions. What they are less permitted to do is use rude comments or attacks, discuss piracy, or otherwise abuse the members of the D&D community.
further discussion of these matters would belong in #moderator-support - I have explained rules enough so that we are not discouraging the newer folks in this channel to participate in discussions.
I will now move back to assisting with the conversation at hand.
My first game using 5th edition was through a DM using Adventurer's League rules.. At the time, choices were a little more restrictive, but as a new player, that almost made it easier as you didn't have so many permutations of race and subclasses to choose from.
Without that positive experience with AL and D&D I likely wouldn't be here and still playing almost a decade later 🙂
I've just looked it up. Is Adventurer's League essentially a ruleset that allows one to keep progression of one's character(s) across different campaign without needing to start over per game?
Yeah, that's a good way to put it IMO!
For others, the main take away is that it's an easier way to "drop in/out" of a game. West Marches is definitely an interesting way to play with its own pros/cons.
I see. Thank you for clarifying.
Right, so it'd be beneficial if you've grown fond of a character during a one off or short campaign.
Even long campaigns, there is regular discussion of using the full hard cover adventures in our AL channels.
I just got my DrDhrolin's Dictionary of Dinosaurs dnd book
how do I like do battles??
no like
its just another dnd book but with dinosaurs
Have you read the Basic Rules for D&D yet?
Where are you getting stuck?
just the basics of it, like how turns happen and the health and ect
no I mean like how you take turns
and what happens in those turns
Oh, so initiative rolls?
When it’s your go you can move, take an action and a bonus action
ik initiative rolls, roll a number and it goes from highest to lowest
thats literally where I get confused 😭
I'm a new DM and all my friends who wanna play dnd are new too
Does every class get a bonus action and would specific ones get more or less depending on rest?
Yes some classes get more abilities that are bonus actions
I see, okay. So, every character has what's called an 'Action' and a Bonus Action. Actions usually include but not always limited to things like attacks with weapons and spells. Or miscellaneous actions that your DM allows.
Ty ty!!
You can take a bonus action only when a special ability, spell, or other feature of the game states that you can do something as a bonus action. You otherwise don't have a bonus action to take.
You can take only one bonus action on your turn, so you must choose which bonus action to use when you have more than one available.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/combat#BonusActions
https://youtu.be/Uwimxo__n-I?si=PhDFWDDafLFkB90C good video on actions in combat
Bonus actions usually include things that you can do special extra actions that do not require a full action to perform like jumping, grappling and certain class specific actions like Cunning Hide for Rogue.
so how do bonus actions happen??
It depends on the class, race, and other pre-determined values.
For example, if a Rogue wishes to hide, he can choose to use his class specific action called "Cunning Hide" or the action that all have the ability to do which is "hide". As a DM, you can ask these things to your players.
don't you have to roll a dice to determine how well they hide?
Is there anyone in this discord group that does discord campaigns ?
Yes, they must perform a stealth check.
so thats basically the player rolling a dice?
Read #find-a-game (carefully) to learn how to use our LFG channels to find a group/game
Oh, really? Thank you for correcting me.
Mint
Yes, and I believe it's a 1d20 for stealth checks.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/126710605/InLFZu look at this character on the actions tab it shows what actions/bonus actions/reactions this character can do
and for actual combat??
Indeed I am. It's my main gateway to how I came into learning more about DND as a player. Came here to learn more and find a game, actually.
Well it depends on what you mean. What specifically do you wish to know?
like how does the player do all the attacking, moving, doging, magic ect
They must roll a die based on what action they wish to do.
ohhh alright
Lel
For dodging, that depends on AC and a die throw for their means of attack from my understanding
Also note that you don't roll dice until/unless the DM asks you to - but yes some activities will likely require a dice roll (e.g. making an attack against a creature)
No dodging just gives the enemy disadvantage
Ah, could be.
I had no idea dodge was an action until now. Hm. Notes down in my pad
I see, thank you for your kindness and insight.
I've a question of my own now.. how common are homebrew characters in a campaign? Is it taboo or usually accepted? (Granted if it's not too OP and reasonable)
It would never be -5
I see, so it's uncommon for it to be accepted.. a pity. This will prove difficult. I thank you regardless, though.
Are they common? Yes. Extensively common. However for the sake of both your DM and other players, I don't recommend making them your default. It puts pressure on the DMs to approve your content and other players to accept you're unwilling to play by the rules. Not necessarily in a negative sense but it can certainly come off that way.
What’s a Homebrew
Is there a place where I can discuss homebrewed subclasses and ask for feedback and opinions within the Discord?
Mathematically, disadvantage is -3.4. The rules for passive skill checks round that up to -5, but that rule only applies to passive skill checks.
Homebrew is the term for fan-made rules and content, like a mod for a video game
Why is that, if I may ask?
hii
We have #homebrew to discuss homebrew but yes, it's usually a good idea to get a feel for how the core game works before trying to homebrew so you can make sure what you create is balanced for what the game expects.
You shouldn't design a balance patch for a game before you've played it. You shouldn't change the design of your car's engine before you've driven it
I see.. both very good points. A shame.. my subclass is something very special to me, but you're right. I will at least get some experience to tweak it first.
99% of the things players often want to do are achievable using the rules as they're presented to you either through flavoring or narrative story-telling. Instead of using homebrew, it's often better to approach the GM and explain your concept.
If they're a good GM, they'll be able to walk you through the process of how to create your vision through the game.
Thank you. However, is there a channel here that I could ask for your opinion and input on said homebrewed subclass I've made recently? Just so I can better tweak if for when and if I find a good DM willing to do accept it?
Perhaps even ask if my homebrewed subclass is possible within the player handbook?
Ah, I see. Thank you. I will go there soon and share. 🫡
As an extrapolation on this. Say you have a player say: "Well I want to play Aragorn and I found this custom Ranger of the North subclass on DnDwiki."
As a GM you go: "Cool, let's talk about how to bring Aragorn to life in Dungeons and Dragons."
You set them up with a Fighter, tell them to take the Battlemaster subclass, have them be wis focusd with good strength middleling con, take medium armor proficiency, the healer feat, outlander background ect... and you're good to go!
Problem is if you come with the character first the DM now has to say "no, you're not doing that, but here's other options" which can feel limiting, even if its not.
So I’m new and I have a question if your making use of like a physical map, of like a dungeon for the players to explore do you like cover the parts of the map they haven’t been too yet? Then uncover parts of the room as they get the them or something? I may have worded this weird
I’m just confused on how people make use of these maps
I think that's typical: don't show them where they haven't been yet.
Some people do this, and some people don’t. It’s a playstyle preference
Another quick question when like having characters transition to another area what is typically done, do they just make one big map, like if they enter a tavern and where at like a town map. I’m trying to like learn the game with my friends and where all new so I’m just trying to get a feel for like how some things work
Also depends on the game. You might just have an overview town map and not bother making individual maps unless you plan the party to fight there. Or you might have maps for everything (or nothing)
Making a map or finding one for every location is a lot of time and effort. If that's your bliss, follow it! But I'd try to invest energy into the key parts rather than every part.
Maps are typically only used for combat or places where detailed movement is important, like if a dungeon has traps or hidden passages. If they players are in town or in a tavern or something, the DM will typically just describe what it looks like out loud, and the players will imagine their characters there. We call this style of play “theater of the mind”
I admit, I like an overview map for cities/larger areas if the party is going to be there a lot or there's many options to track
But you can certainly live without it
Even if you do have a map of a city, it will most likely be a representation of the area, so players can see the paths they are walking or what is nearby. It won’t be a tiled battle map
Does my proficiency bonus go with saving throws?
so then they roll initiative which tells us how successful it is?
so in actual combat is that what happens?
Whats a proficiency bonus??? AND WHATS A SAVING THROW???
Your character is likely proficient in two different types of saving throws.
If you’re proficient with a saving throw, yes, you’d add your proficiency bonus to the roll.
Proficiency in a saving throw, weapon, skill, or tool lets you add your proficiency bonus to rolls for that thing.
In effect: proficiency means you’re more likely to succeed at the things you’re good at.
A saving throw is a D20 roll that’s used when you try to avoid or resist some kind of danger.
How do I know that I am proficient in a certain skill?
Your character will have some rule that says they’re proficient in that skill.
From your race, class, or background.
Most characters start with 4-6 skill proficiencies on average.
ohhhh alright
how do like turns work??
and what happens in each turn
if you don't mind explaining 😭
There’s a few things you can do on your turn:
- Move a distance up to your speed (probably 30 ft.)
- Take an action
- Take a bonus action, if you have one available
- Interact with an object
- Communicate briefly
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/combat#YourTurn
Your best bet is to look through #looking-for-players and reach out on games that interest you. It's unlikely that anyone is going to DM you and directly invite you to their group
Asking for games in other channels is also against the server rules, iirc
oops😭
As a human fighter outlander, should my int be higher or wis?
wis imo, int really doens't come up much outside of the clases that use it, while wis is important for perception and wisdom saving throws, your wilderness guy would probably want to be very perceptive
True. Thank you, Harvest!
You could just take proficiency in Perception and Survival, without putting too many points into Wisdom and fufil the flavor just fine
yeah i'd put wisdom at like 10 or 12
You see, my skills are at the moment, survival, nature, history, athletics and animal handling
I'd definitely consider getting Perception if you can squeeze it in there somewhere, but otherwise that looks like a fine lineup of skills
I see. Though I believe I can only have five skills ATM, so should I replace one for perception?
Perception feels pretty flavorful for this character, so I'd certainly consider it
But if you have better explanations for the existing proficiencies, definitely stick with what youve got
My character has lived in the forest his whole life and knows animals, knows the woods etc
Maybe I'd get rid of history
For perception
I think so too
Okay, sick! Thanks cosmic and harvest!
And I think I'll switch the scores of wisdom and intelligence. I guess I'll have to make intelligence 8 and wisdom 12
I think it makes more sense if my character is wiser than he is intelligent having been raised in the forest
One more question, do I figure out my (modifiers? Idk what they're called) based on my race, class etc? For example RN my strength is 12, but since I'm a fighter do I have to write +1 or something?
Yooo guys im new to dnd and i already watched a guide video and now a how to play a little bit but im looking for a real match to learn more and i really exited to try this
Soo can anyone help
Wish ya luck
Thanks bud... Really appriciate that
Ywyw
to find your modifier, subtract 10 from the score and divide by 2, rounding down
Or just use the modifier table. That’s so much simpler
You can find that table here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/step-by-step-characters#AbilityScoresandModifiers
Hii, im a new into DnD and ive never played it, im still learning the basics but i think it would be better for me to learn by practicing, and by now the only option is online. Im under 18 and i would feel more comfortable playing with people my age but im stuck because i dont know hot to reach them or where i begin with. Any help?
I don’t know if this is the place to do it or not, but I would like to ask if I could join a campaign I usually DM as a homebrew . But I would like to join an actual thing of D&D for my first time.

As a newcomer I have always been into DnD by listening to podcast or watching videos never really been able to play and when I have been it's just been thrown together by friends that don't really know what they are doing I usually pick weird classes what are some beginner friendly classes to pick I usually try to play as a bard cause I love music but if I plan on playing I was thinking paladin or barbarian
What are domains? Me and my friends are planning to do a homebrew and a few domains are listed, I'm not entirely sure what they are
Cleric domains? theyre a certain ideology and religion a cleric follows. their subclasses
Every class has a subclass, a specialization within that class.
Domains are a cleric’s subclass.
Ohhh, alright, that's cool
Hey, I'm super new to D&D and I want to learn how to play and see if it's for me, but I don't want to waste people's time. Is there a place to find short games that are friendly to newcomers like me?
I'm completely new to D&D. Does anyone know of any sites or books that i can use to learn the basics?
Check the pins as well as #learn-to-play ! Both have a link to the free basic rules
Awesome thanks for redirecting me
hi
do i have to be very specific on my char
Could you clarify what you mean by that?
I finished my very first D&D session yesterday and it was very fun. My only real issue is that I joined in the middle of a campaign where the party is level 8, and I had to basically create a level 8 character in the span of a week. It was daunting to say the least.
I definitely wanna see if I can find a group that can do a one-shot or campaign starting around level 1-3 next time.
haii
srry im very shy, but I just made my d&d first character, and I just want to find a beginner friendly campaign, hoping to warm up a bit more here :>
#find-a-game can point you toward the available groups here.
Hi!!! I just started my first campaign and am absolutely loving it, is there a place that I can find other groups to join?
Yep! Check out the instructions in #find-a-game.
Thx!!
Where do i start? Havent made a character and not exactly sure how to make one.
Should i find a dm first or??
You can start looking for a DM whenever you like.
I’d recommend coming up with a few loose ideas for characters, though.
Then when you find a DM, you can work together to pick the best fit for that campaign and add any finishing details.
I appreciate the help! Thanks
As for actually making a character, there’s some info here to get you started: #learn-to-play message
Ur the best! Ill scrap up a few ideas
Does anyone want to start a dnd group here on discord?
It says in the handbook that fighters are proficient in all armor, shields, simple and martial weapons. Should I add those to my equipment alongside my staff, hunting trap, trophy from a slain monster, traveller clothes and my 10 GP pouch? Or do I need to remove something?
Having proficiency doesn’t mean you have the item itself.
It really just means you can use those things effectively.
You’re trained in their use.
So because you’re proficient with basically all weapons, any time you attack with a weapon, you can add your proficiency bonus to the attack roll.
so like ... fighters have proficiency in all weapons but that doesnt mean fighter has all the weapons?
Essentially, you’re more likely to hit your target because you’ve trained.
proficiency means you know how to use it, not that you have it
You should see a separate section of your character sheet where you can list your proficiencies.
if you are a rogue, and get a level of fighter, you don't magically just get a huge pile of weapons and full plate armor
Hi
Then under Equipment, you’d write just the starting items listed in your class and background.
I see. Tysm
Hi
What abt my proficiency bonus? It said in a video that any lvl 1 character starts off with +2, but it also says that the fighter has a +2 bonus as well. So should it be +2 or +4?
You proficiency bonus is based entirely on your character level.
Okay, I see. Thanks tuna!
The table here shows your bonus for any given level:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/step-by-step-characters#CharacterAdvancement
haii!! srry for late reply, I made a character sheet of them on the website here!!

Anybody know where I could inquire about playing with a group? 🙂
I just finished it a couple hours ago, I just need to update their picture :>
#find-a-game can point you in the right direction.
Nice!
ty :>
Did you roll for your ability scores? They seem lower than usual.
You’d be better off using the Standard Array instead.
from when I made them, yeah
I just managed to find a picture of their skill points (or the entire 1st page I should say) since i lost the whole physical copy :(,
Seems like you’re missing some equipment, too. Likely the ones from your class.
I kinda just picked whatever option there was (and I was comfortable and sure with my prior knowledge)

Typically you’d use the starting equipment listed in your class and background, unless your DM has told you to do otherwise.

oh dear that is 3 8s
oh um uh, I kinda just made them on my own without a dungeon master, was I suppose to find one before making a character?
With Deborah Ann Woll? Haven’t seen it myself, but I’ve heard good things.
well, yes
oops :<
if you dont know what youre doing you kinda need a DM to help you out
I disagree with that statement.
you made this character for a campaign, right?
It's better to make a character with a DM if you're new
BUT… you are short-changing yourself here in a couple ways.
You don't NEED a DM but its better
Your ability scores are very low. You’re gonna have a harder time succeeding at various rolls.
^ 3 8s is rough
should I reroll those?
I’d recommend using the Standard Array or Point Buy until/unless your DM says otherwise.
maybe, you could also just use Standard Array or Point Buy
Most DMs are unlikely to accept rolled ability scores if they didn’t see them being rolled.
the time I made them was in a school club and they sorta just let me keep the ability scores
well you didnt have 3 18s, then they wouldnt have
I’d switch to Standard Array, and make CHA, CON, and DEX your top three scores.
Done
if i see a player with more than 2 negative modifiers i let them reroll or use standard array or point buy
you already read the basic rules?
I believe so three specific dice, depending on what you do
No, I don't think you read the basic rules in just 5 minutes
I’d also suggest redoing your equipment, and using the starting equipment listed in your class and background.
You’re missing some fundamental things, like armor.
The cast magic you will need a higher role, the more powerful the magic them much more higher. The number needs to be some magic expose cost resources while you can Caspers without resources some both can depends either
Using the listed starting equipment should ensure you have all the basics.
no...
And you can’t just see oh, I just do this and it dies the dungeon mass tells you that and describes the stuff around you
ok now youre just being incoherent because of your speech to text
you should seriously go through all of basic rules, you cant read it all in 5 minutes
I pressed the basic rules and read the part about like the player
which is what chapter
okay! got it!
I jumped to how to play
You need to learn how to create a character and how to play the game, which is roughly 10 chapters
Oh, I already know how to create characters
Still around 5 chapters
I created many actually
if you have made them in dnd beyond i would love to see them
please read the basic rules or the phb if you have it
OK be sure I don’t think D&D beyond though I can send you a picture I made it in the app that is for DND
you cant send pictures here
DM’s
^ yeah
DND is a game purely defined by its rules
not reading the rules is not playing DND
This doesn’t mean strictly shearing to the rules and tables can be flexible to certain rules and jurisdictions at the DM’s discretion. Just beware that without books and rules, we’re essentially playing pretend on the playground and someone can just say “Nuh uh. That doesn’t hit me because of xyz”
ya said it better than I could
You good. I just wanted to make it understood that rules lawyering isn’t everything and sometimes it’s good to just let our imagination run wild, within proper reason
ye there's a balance
u gotta know the rules to know when breaking them is good
also so that all of you are on the same page by default
Anyways, who wants to hear how I used gust and shape water to win a arena battle that was being flooded on a floating island
(For new players, it’s funny because side it breaks so many rules but the idea of a twig of a person pushing Eddie hall who’s feet were frozen in a block of ice over the edge)
When would I use a saving throw vs a skill, could I use a skill instead of a saving throw if I thought it applied?
Also making a character takes a long time
No, they are used for very different things
A saving throw is used when your player tries to avoid or resist some perilous event.
It’s not generally something you choose to do.
a spell or ability will explicity tell you to roll a saving throw. you usually dont want to and cant roll them whenever
Either the rules or the DM will tell you when you’re in trouble, and what’s needed to get out of it.
When your character is in control and making an active attempt at something (other than an attack), that’s when ability checks come into play instead.
So if you need to avoid a trap, brace for impact, or resist a spell, that’s a saving throw.
If you want to scale a wall, solve a puzzle, or follow a minion, that’s an ability check.
Ah one more question alright if, a character attacks from like a hiding spot how does they play out combat wise with initiative?
Hey, I'm a total D&D noob. I've played once, and everyone was so nice and held my hand the whole time. I'd love to get further into D&D and make some friends!
If they were hidden from an enemy, they'd count as an unseen attacker, and gain advantage on the attack (and be then revealed)
You'd roll initiative, and the enemies that didnt see you would be Suprised. You'd also have advantage from being unseen on your first attack and then be revealed
the suprise might not always happen it varies based on table

I'm confused about these find a game channels or sites (like startplaying.games) - they aren't listing locations. Are these games now virtual?
Those specific spots cater toward online games, yes.
Generally speaking games advertised online will tend to be online games
So finding an in-person game is more going to game shops
Generally, yeah
Got it, makes sense

Cool, I'll have a look.
Hi guys, I have a question.
Me and my friends are playing my campaign, but when we finish, one of my friends wants to make a campaign that revolves around "Metro 2033". Now, he says he will only allow human characters, and they can't use magic or anything like that, we can only use firearms. How should I prepare my character for his campaign?
At this point, it sounds like your DM isn't really playing DnD anymore. I'd recommend talking to them directly, since their setting seems highly specific.
You should probably have a talk with your friend about this idea. There are lots of different tabletop RPG games. D&D isn't the only one. D&D is built and designed around a specific style of play, in a specific setting. If high fantasy swords and sorcery isn't the type of story or experience your group wants to have, then it would probably be better to use a system more suited to what you are looking for
thank you, I'll talk to him
If you want suggestions for what type of system to use instead of D&D, you can discuss that in #non-dnd-topics
Hello
Welcome!
I have a question. I would like to start playing dnd but im new and i dunno how to find a nice group maybe someone here can help
Hey everyone, new to DnD and Dming here, I though of a scenario that I don't know how to handle. The Dragon's Rest is the main place where the players will get accommodated. The master's attidute is indifferent. Let's say my players want to mess around and cause damage to the place. The master gets hostile and ask for the characters to make amends for the damage. If the players continue to mess around, the master would have to kick them out, but then the story would end kinda since their quests would have been asigned from the inhabitants of the village. Any different aproaches?
#find-a-game can point you in the right direction.

Greetings fellas new player that wants to learn more on dnd
Hi Jack, take a second to check out #learn-to-play
I believe I’m a bit confused on how many moves you get during a turn, so you get an attack (which is an action), a bonus action and can move? And does disengage account as an action?
You get one Action, and can move
what you do with your Action, and what else you may do on your turn, is up to you and depends on your character's features and abilities
Disengage is indeed an action.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/combat#ActionsinCombat
Attacking is also an action: the Attack action.
And since you can normally take only one action, you wouldn’t typically be able to both Disengage and Attack.
It's easiest to conceptualize a Bonus Action as follows:
You don't have a Bonus Action on your turn until you have a feature that gives you one.
And if you have more than one available Bonus Action, you have to choose between them.
Disengage can become a bonus action if you play certain classes though
Sure, and those classes give you that Bonus Action.

hi

I meant. Hi
If we wanted to watch or listen to a campaign being played, what would be the best podcast or YouTube channel to check out?
Critical Role and Dimension 20 are common recommendations.
There's also a whole tag on twitch dedicated to DnD
I love this question....
☝️ that is the video series that got me into D&D. I love the way he sets up his table and I love the way they all play together. It's the best video that shows what a typical D&D game looks like imo because they're having fun and taking the game serious, but they're also cracking jokes and having a good time. That's what it's all about!
Stinky dragon pod is pretty good
You can kinda learn how to play from the first campaign
I sat down and I read the rules and it all seems really interesting, I'm a new player have no experience besides what I've watched online.

I’m still pretty new myself, but I’d say your first step should be making a character
@limber dune k I'ma make a barbarian.
It’s generally a good idea to make your character after joining a campaign. However, making a character is fun! And, it can be a good way to introduce yourself to some of the rules. It can’t hurt to make one ahead of time if you understand that you might have to make changes or start over after joining a campaign for real
Absolutely agree. I have played like 3 sessions but made 30 characters. For me, learning involves working through the mechanics of each character I make as if I am going to use them.
I'll make a character and then talk about intent and perspective in here after reviewing the rules to get experienced player opinions.
Rules are essential so maybe pick an interesting class and then read the rules about it, make it to your taste, and see the opinions of others as a learning period before you jump in?
I decided to make a wizard for my 2nd character. Maybe a mistake?
Wizard is harder than a barbarian but as long as you research it a bit and stay out of the front lines you should have some fun!
not a mistake at all, you'll just have to do a bit of research on spell choices
For context I was asked to make a character and bump them all the way to level 8 because that's where the campaign is at this point
Barbarian is my first character. Maybe it was my previous writing experience or the DM simply being nice to a first timer, but I was given 4 inspiration that session lol
I'd say for now, the only problem you'd have would be understanding what spells you need vs what would be useful. Be sure to prepare the correct spells for the day. No combat planned? Take less murder spells, are you about to storm a fortress? Take fireball
Not sure how I would avoid making the same two or three characters 30 times
I think I'm going to just make a new character and not focus on magic roles until I'm in a lower level campaign
I picked really outlandish traits or backstory arcs and made something similar to match... Like a dragon born draconic sorc that is trying to ascend to full dragon form,
A mountain giant rogue with expertise in intimidation.... Along the lines of "the only people that see me either know better to not notice me, or are dead."
That's hilarious
I really enjoy making these loose backstories. Such fun!
Like you could do an ace Ventura pet detective ranger/druid...
Only thing I’ve got written down right now is a Kenku Ranger, so I can actually fit into a decent amount of settings as long as they’re the traditional fantasy I think-
Yea, I have to agree!
My ranger’s whole shtick is that he’s actually rather smart, it’s just that no one listens to him cause he’s also an absolute weirdo crow person
So you're saying he's super CAWW-tious?
Nice
Great pun but also shush-
Me want game

To play D&D the only things you really need are dice, the rules, and a way to communicate with the other players. Some people use voice calls, some people use text, and some people play in person. There are other tools you can use to make things easier, like battle maps and digital character sheets. But these aren't required per se. Which tools you use, and what platform you do it on, will be up to you and your group.
I think you forgot dice, dice, and more dice... Never enough dice!
I'm ok with all,but I don't have dice.
You can use digital dice for free
Google and DnD. Beyond have dice roll
True tho, I grabbed some from Barnes and noble today-
I'm guessing the DM does all the rolling for you?
Ok I have d&d beyond.
I mean for online
Again no - you can use digital dice/dice rollers online
That doesn't require honors system?
Platforms like D&D Beyond or Roll 20 have built in digital dice that can display your roll to the DM and everyone in your party, so there is no cheating
Thanks guys for being helpful.
Often the dice rolling outputs to a shared chat area - there is no "cheating" because everyone sees the actual result.
And anyway, you're playing a collaborative game - cheating doesn't really win you much.
So when should some one start there first game.
When you feel willing to give it a shot
Ok,is there a one shot people can do?
Whenever you feel comfortable doing so. You should put in some effort to learn the rules ahead of time, but you don't need to memorize everything. There will be 4-5 other people at the table to help you remember anything you forget, and you can always open up the rules while you play as well
You can scan through the game posts in #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community and see if anything looks interesting and works for your schedule.
Ok I'll keep that in mind.
How's the competition?
Competition? Can you clarify?
The supply and demand of campaign runners vs participants
There are many more players than DMs
I honestly don't even know if my laptop can run a virtual tabletop lol
That said we don't have any official numbers but if you think of how D&D is designed for 1 DM and 3-6 players... that can give some idea of the scaling issue of DMs to players.
Not all groups play with a Virtual Tabletop
I know mind theatre exists but I think virtual tabletop is just more popular
Basically playing D&D without an actual tabletop. Just using your words, your stats, and your imagination
VTTs can also be more of a technical challenge and some groups forgo that just to get to playing D&D rather than fussing around with the VTT.
"Mind theater" or "Theater of the Mind" is the term for D&D without the use of visual aids. Its when you play by simply describing and imagining the world around you instead of using maps or models
That's what I imagined personally
Then you're already doing it!
Some virtual tabletops are more or less taxing than others. It may be difficult to run a 3D environment like FoundryVTT or Tabletop sim, but there are also 2D ones that simply move circular tokens around a map, like Roll20 or Owlbear Rodeo
My laptop can hardly run Town of Salem 2 tbh
Deja vu
Can't same I'm familiar with that game, but I think the point all of us are trying to make is that D&D is available at any level of technological utilization. You shouldn't feel held back because of your means of play
Next week I might try to find a session online. Maybe a oneshot lol. In the meantime I'm gonna create a new character for the campaign I'm currently in
That sounds like a lot for one game
Hence why not everyone gets to play. You're competing for the same spot
Damn might as well do a job search lol
What are some combat saving throw situations?
Typically spell related, but it could also be that part of the environment is falling on you. Or a trap is triggered.
Are the majority of situations where something will hit either way or are complete misses more common?

It’s really depends on context.
Attack rolls are usually hit or miss. Features that force saving throws can also be hit or miss (“save or suck”). Alternatively, others are “save for half damage, fail for full damage”
It's confusing coming from bg3 tbh lol
Hey folks - I'm new to this server, but not new to DnD in general. Currently playing both 4E and 5E and running one 5E campaign, soon to start a couple more once the new PHB drops. I'm probably elderly compared to most of you (currently 54) with two adult kids and a lovely wife that enjoys the fact that my playing D&D means I'm not on drugs or sleeping around. 🙂
Pleasure to be here - I'm also neurodivergent, but friendly, and I do enjoy making new friends. 🙂
Can someone easily explain me how to exactly create a character on a character sheet?
Have you picked a race, class, and background?
Is there a specific part of your character sheet you’re curious about?
You can use Roll20 or DnD Beyond I believe
My discord just updated, im very behind nvm
Na you good bro.
Teach me about interrupts
I’ve got everything you mentioned and I’m confused about the couple fields on the left side, the attributes and how they are used if you understand
Abilities
Six abilities provide a quick description of every creature's physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
For each ability, your character has an ability score, a number from 1 to 20. There are three ways to determine ability scores, and your DM will let you know which to use. (If you don’t have a DM yet, choose Standard Array or Point Buy.)
- Roll the Dice. Roll 4d6 and record the total of the highest three. Do this six times, and then assign each total to a different ability.
- Standard Array. Assign each of the following numbers to a different ability: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Point Buy. Choose your own ability scores by spending points.
After assigning your ability scores (and adding any bonuses from your race), determine your ability modifiers, a number from -5 to +5, using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table.
There’s some good info here to get you started with that. ☝️
Which class did you choose? That’ll change which ability scores you want to prioritize.
I chose my character to be a Sorcerer
A human sorcerer if that’s important
Nice! So you’ll probably want Charisma, Constitution, and Dexterity as your top scores.
Strength is probably the least important for you.
Alright, so how do I calculate the points to put in there?
Those are saving throws and skill checks respectively. Their scores will be determined by your main 6 ability scores along with any penalties/bonuses you gain from different features, whether that is your class, race, or stuff you earn later in the game.
I think I'm starting to get the hang of character creation. I made a level 8 way of shadow monk with cleric Initiate
There’s three main methods for determining your ability scores, detailed in the bot post above.
Which you should use is a question to ask your DM.
So if your strength is 15. Your strength modifier will be (15-10)/2 or 5/2 which is 2.5. Ability scores are rounded down so your strength modifier would be +2
If you don’t have a DM yet, I’d recommend using Standard Array or Point Buy.
So if you roll an athletics check, you would roll a d20 die and add the +2 bonus from your strength modifier
Ok thank you so much, very nice of you
Oh another question I have, my friend recently asked me if it’s possible to have a Necromancer as a playable character and I didn’t know, because I personally think a necromancer is rather an enemy than a friend or companion
Yes, there’s a necromancer wizard class
Can you use dual wield daggers to attack without the dual wield feat and without the two weapon fighting style? The internets telling me you can and idk if that’s right
And if you play your cards right, you can have a constantly revivable undead army
Im not too sure, but I feel like thats a question for your DM
I believe rogues can but check #character-discussion first
you can totally make a necromancer. Clerics, wizards, and even some paladins/warlocks can have undead minions
Yeah, any character can use the rules for Two-Weapon Fighting:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/combat#TwoWeaponFighting
i will say necromancer/summoner style characters can be hard to manage and can slow down combat a lot so try to plan ahead in combat
The feat and the fighting style simply remove some of the limitations on those rules, allowing you to do it more effectively.
It’s finnneeee, it’s not like it’s circle of shepherd
Is there a walkthrough for that necromancer build?... Asking for a friend 😂
a level 6 necromancer wizard can have about 20 skeletons at once and it only increases from there
👀 WHAT?!
that's wild
Check your dm’s
Would my op fog and ice set up be as dangerous in tabletop settings?
ice/the prone condition are a lot weaker in tabletop, falling prone does not instantly end turns like it does in bg3
Can I get that too?
Aww darn, that shit is hilarious in bg3 when you have fog on top of it
Done
thanks
hey

I don't want to interrupt just in case..
I think its good bro
thanks
multiple people have questions
So, What does TPK mean and when does it happen?
Could you please give me some examples?
Total party kill, when the qhole party gets wiped in a single encounter
Dont have examples
Oh Daym
Im not smart like that
nah it's fine
Everyone dies is the example
XD
pretty much
Thanks tho, it's just that I've heard it some times and I was like:
Is this some mechanic that I'm unaware of?
As it turns out it's quite simple actually XD
It’s just a particular outcome.
For newcomers it is worth discussing how likely TPKs should be with your playgroup.
Any tips or anything I absolutely need to know before I DM for my first time?
try to have combat encounter stuff planned ahead, it can be hard to improv encounter balance on the fly. Write notes about what's happening, and realise that your players are not your enemy, even if you are trying to kill them sometimes

?dmtips
Okay, soo I'm completely new to D&D, is there a guide for this?
Hi, ive been having trouble finding europe-time, -18, new-player friendly games, community groups, ive been searching everywhere but i cant find it, theres always something off

If you’re looking for an online group here, then focus on matching availability over time zone.
I like these: https://howtogm.guide/dnd-5e/cheat-sheet
And I have my own list: #dnd-newcomers message
I am thank you
Is there any way someone without a PC can play D&D online.
Ultimately all you need is a way to communicate with your group.
Ok,I can do that.
So if you’re already here communicating on Discord, I’m gonna say yes!
Roll20 isn’t very mobile-friendly in my experience. 😅
Is anyone actually use mobile.
Because if not then I'm probably never going to be able to play D&D.
Owlbear.rodeo (yes that's the name of the online app) is a mobile-friendly virtual tabletop
Im on moblie
What are posts?
Dk i just joined yesterday
@urban cipher did you play a session with someone?.
It’s incredibly simple, I’m with undyingnoob
Play by post is like text-based D&D games.
Can be text via Discord, or email, or posts on a forum.
Like a game
O
Why
Whats that
Just finished reading it, seems easy enough
I just created an acc
Nicely done sir.
What do i do on it
A DM can use it to show maps and tokens for their D&D games
DK,I just got it too.
It also has a place to roll dice
They have some tutorial videos - I'd suggest watching those. For further questions, use #third-party or I think Owlbear.rodeo has their own Discord server?
Noob question, but what does a paid game offer over the other alternatives? I'm looking at the "Find a Game" session and am wondering what you would be paying for over just normally looking for a game?
you pay for a game when you can't find one for free, paid dms are generally more familiar with the system but not always so check reviews
^
Many different opinions on that but paid games do tend to do a couple of things:
- Filter out not-serious players (putting money on the line tends to encourage players to show up and get their money's worth)
- Create different expectations on the game and DM - it's not just friends getting together to play a game but it's now a business transaction of paying money and expecting a certain level of game in return)
Interesting, thank you!
There are costs outside of the one time costs they would be spending anyway? Genuinely asking, I really did not know there were costs
Will I be allowed to join dnd if I'm new and still learning?
Yes this makes sense!
Thanks for the responses!
Also yeah i'd imagine paid games have better attendance and people are more involved, dming can be hard work and whatnot
if you've read the PHB or even the basic rules it puts you above like 80% of players ive seen, you can try to find a new player friendly campaign but as long as you're wiilling to learn most tables will be fine with someone who is new
I'd even say many groups are fine with new to the game players as long as said player has spent effort trying to learn the game rules (so the rest of the group isn't spending their valuable game time teaching everything from scratch) and that player vibes well with the rest of the group.
Yeah, I guess it would just be a difference in opinion on that. I appreciate the responses overall! Curiosity sated!
I'm going to work toward creating free quality experiences for people. $400 for materials is a one time investment I wouldn't feel is expensive and needs recouping. The one response I liked about paid was "players are more likely to show up/be invested" with dollars down. That's the only line that made sense to me as commitment would be the great destroyer of a campaign.
I'm still figuring it all out. To each their own on whether people want funds or not.
Thank you for the convo on this!
There’s also less competition to get into paid games, so you can often get started a lot quicker.
Hey, someone speaks spanish?
Es que un amigo y yo queremos aprender a jugar, pero la verdad no sabemos como
I'd be willing to pay for a campaign, because I'd know it's going to be a group that shows up
I see that at conventions sometimes. Pay all that for a badge and ticket and don't show up for the game
Always weird to me.
I suppose if you've got money to burn, it's not a big deal
It's crazy
Second question, does it make sense to just get the 2024 books and dive into them or do you think the community will slow transition into the updated rules etc over time.
