Look for games where your schedules line up, not the specific time zones. If some folks want to play in the middle of the night or the early morning, that's on them; the key is that you're available at the same time.
And you can also look elsewhere besides this server.
its SO HARD to find a campaign that works
It is.
im available all days thing is
Ya and don't be afraid to leave a game if you feel you aren't being treated fairly. Obviously be reasonable and don't expect everything to go your way either.
most people are too ahead of me and want to have a game at 3pm while its past midnight for me already
and so on
Time zones are less of an issue if you are interested in Play By Post (PBP) games. Text based games typically run asynchronously, so you don’t have to have everyone online at the same time
I've never thought about running a game like that. Kinda different but would be super interesting.
I personally haven’t tried it either, but it’s not an uncommon way to play
I'm actually suggesting it to my friends right now. We stopped during a one-shot might be a good way to continue it.
Quick question,I hear you should take notes when playing a game, but what exactly should I be taking notes on?
If any have a community I could join let me know please I haven’t really found a good one that lets under 18s play
Generally important things about what is happening around you: People, Places, Things.
Think of it like a quest log that you document.
Ok.thank you.
i take notes on what my character and my party should do
like objectives and stuff
short-term and long-term goals
you know servers that have open slots like that?
I do not. I do not typically do PBP myself. But you can search in #looking-for-players or #looking-for-community to see if there are any PBP games posted there
You can find PBP on the D&D Beyond forums, Role Gate, Gamers Plane, RPG Crossing, and Reddit’s r/pbp.
Other options include Myth Weavers, No Goblins Allowed, Ongoing Worlds, RolePlay onLine, Roleplayer Guild, Tavern Keeper, and The Tangled Web.
Otherwise, just search PBP or play by post using Discord's Explore Discoverable Servers function.
Hi, how could I start about my character? Like race, or that kinda stuff
Pd: I'm sorry if i write wrong or strange, English isn't my fort
The rules walk you through this process: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters
For artillerist's arcane firearm bonus, can I still add a d8 to spells given to me by magic initiate?
or is it specifically only artificer spells
I wanted to get magic missile from magic initiate feat and I was wondering if I can add the bonus d8 to it
When you cast an artificer spell through the firearm, roll a d8, and you gain a bonus to one of the spell’s damage rolls equal to the number rolled.
Spell learned through anything other than your artificer class would not gain the bonus
thank you
where can i find beginner friendly campaingns or stuff
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
Not all folks advertise their games as newbie-friendly, but you can (and should!) ask.
yeah i am searching but they are not rlly listed as newbie friendly
but thakns anyway
If you see one that strikes your interest, you'll have to reach out anyway, so you may as well as right then check if they're open to players who are new to the game as a whole!
im listing for searching games, i dont see where i can search games straight up
I don't understand what you mean.
there isnt a list of games that are open
im just in the list of people searching for games
#looking-for-players is where DMs post with open games.
The current edition of D&D, fifth edition (5e).
alr how does it work
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
Can you rephrase your question? I don't quite understand what you mean.
i dont know part 2 of the basic rules
playing game part, but i dont think it can cause that much trouble
Knowing how to play the game is important to, y'know, playing the game. If you haven't read that section, you ought to.
I'd recommend taking the time to read through the basic rules if you don't know them. It'll make finding a game 100 times easier if you know how to play!
oh ok ill check it out
ill ask questions about rules i didnt understand rq
an unrelated question
can i do an action thats not cast a spell or move
Combat actions are listed here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#ActionsinCombat
Whether you can do more outside of those is up to the DM, though creativity is usually a pretty big element of the game. I've never met a DM who insisted you only pick from that list, but you could find yourself playing with someone like that!
Hi I'm new and have never played dnd but it seems like fun so I would like to learn

The links above as well as the material in #learn-to-play should be enough to get you started!
I read over the explanation in the book but I still don’t really get how dnd combat works? Much appreciated if anyone could explain
its never too soon to start something but i dont think this is the time
Which part is confusing you at the moment?
Just the steps and order of it, like I don’t really get the… chronology ig?
i guess ill wait till i get a game
Like Ik u take turns in order of initiative, and Ik u do actions on a turn but like bonus actions and like what exactly constitutes an action is all a bit confusing
And like the “action economy” I keep hearing ppl mention
Ignore "action economy" right now. It's not part of the rules.
Action Economy is a bit of a complex concept, but in simple terms it just refers to the amount of actions your character or your team can do. So if for example your character wanted to do 2 things, and both of those things are an action, you wouldn't be able to do them on the same turn because you don't have the action economy to do so.
That's an overly simple explanation, but Clouds is right. This is more of a fan term anyways, so its not at all something you need to worry about when learning the rules. Its more of just a concept that we use to describe aspects of gameplay and strategy
i have to wait for my first game but my first game isnt coming anytime soon
So, to answer your other question, when something is an Action or a Bonus Action, it will say so directly on that ability. There is no guess work involved. You can do 1 action and 1 bonus action per turn.
That's fine. Learn the fundamental rules as much as you can. You don't need to memorize everything.
how long can finding a campaign last (im first timer)
Oh and what are surprise rolls?
During combat you can do the following on your turn:
- 1 Action (Attack, Cast A Spell, Disengage, Dash, Dodge, Help, Hide, Ready, Search, or Use an Object)
- 1 Bonus Action
- Move
- Reaction
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#YourTurn
A stealthed creature/party's Stealth rolls against the enemies' Passive Perception. Enemies who don't detect the stealthed creature won't be able to do anything on their turn for the first round of combat.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#Surprise
The DM determines who might be surprised. If neither side tries to be stealthy, they automatically notice each other. Otherwise, the DM compares the Dexterity (Stealth) checks of anyone hiding with the passive Wisdom (Perception) score of each creature on the opposing side. Any character or monster that doesn't notice a threat is surprised at the start of the encounter.
If you're surprised, you can't move or take an action on your first turn of the combat, and you can't take a reaction until that turn ends. A member of a group can be surprised even if the other members aren't.
Head on over to #dm-discussion and we can give you DMing advice there.
Are opportunity attacks only possible when a creature is trying to leave your space?
Yes and if you have a Reaction available (you only get one reaction per round).
So could somebody make an attack as an action, then immediately make an opportunity attack as a reaction?
Ok,thanks.
Only if another creature is somehow moving on someone else’s turn
Not immediately because it would be a reaction on the enemy's turn.
Opportunity attacks are normally made off your turn when another creature moves
However, you can make an opportunity attack on your own turn as long as you still have your reaction and the conditions are met. It's just not common.
how does multiclassing work?
I wouldn't recommend new players bothering with multiclassing but instead concentrate on a single class.
But if you insist then read the multiclassing rules:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/customization-options#Multiclassing
why not?
Because it maybe overwhelming to learn two classes at the same time in additional to the restrictions of the multiclass rules.
It can be complicated and provides a lot of options the player then has to figure out - this on top of learning how to play the game.
(options and limitations too)
what kinds of restrictions?
Well you can read theme here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/customization-options#Multiclassing
Spellcasting, especially with two spellcasting classes of different class levels, gets a lot of people confused.
Hiiiii I don’t know if this is da right channel for this but I just joined because I have no friends who really like dnd 🥲 I’m sort of a newcomer? I’ve played some campaigns before but I never delved too deep into it so I was hoping to learn a bit more 🥲

Hey, glad to hear you enjoyed it and would like to play some more
The above list of links is a great way to learn (or in your case dive a bit deeper) into the rules of the game
We generally recommend people give the rules a once over and try their hand at making a character before joining a game, just so you have a basic idea of how it all goes
oooh okay thank you so much! I think I have a general understanding of it but I’ll check it out just to see if I can learn any more ! 🙂
if you're feeling alright about the rules and character building feel free to just skip to the bottom of the list to #find-a-game
As a first time dm attempting to write my own campaign, do you need to come up with gods for your characters to be clerics/paladins and whatnot for or is there laid out ones already?
And if I do need to come up with my own gods, how would I go about that?
There is a list of deities in the back of the PHB here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/phb/appendix-b-gods-of-the-multiverse
Paladins and clerics don't have to follow a god, though.
Some players might question why the gods of your setting are copies of the ones that exist in the Forgotten Realms. But that is just nickpicky imo
technically they don't need to but it's nice to have since i feel like the default assumption of those classes is to have them worshipping a god
Here are some handy videos from MonarchsFactory (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eMgPgbRb_fA) and Pointy Hat (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1AwT2GC2pe4) on that very topic.
Most of my paladin characters are atheists, and are usually brutes
Like, the stereotype of a brute
Subverting expectations, though!
hey, iev always wanted to try dnd and im finally giving it a go, how do i get started?

oh yea of course, i'm totally on board with the idea, i guess i'm just being pedantic haha ^^" not every cleric/paladin has to worship a god but the same is true in reverse so i think if the dm is up for adapting/creating gods for their setting then it's nice to provide that for the cleric/paladins that Do want that kind of story
thanks
Check the resources above and in #learn-to-play.
(Copied from Discussion)
Umm my partner @earnest wagon and I want to get into DND... what should we know?
A good way to come up with your own unique pantheon is to simply take each of the Cleric Domains, and make a god for each one. Often settings have an equal number of good deities and evil deities
Considering the culture of the civilisation these Gods are patrons of, can also inspire how they portray themselves
See #dnd-newcomers message and #learn-to-play.
I think there was something about a handbook right?
Is it meant to be read all in one go or just like, as you play?
It's a good idea to read over it at whatever pace works for you. Knowing it in the broad strokes will be helpful so you can reference it as you play because, frankly, it's a lot and most of us don't have it memorized.
Ahhh, alright, thank you!
I’m a bit confused on proficiency bonus
How do I know what my proficiency bonus is
Wait I think I see it
On my dnd beyond sheet I see where it says prof. Bonus +5
Your Proficiency bonus is always based on your total character level, as shown in the Character Advancement table, not your level in a particular class. For example, if you are a fighter 3/rogue 2, you have the Proficiency bonus of a 5th- level character, which is +3.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#CharacterAdvancement
you can refer to the table to see what your proficiency bonus is at different levels
it will be based on the overall level of your character and increases from +2 up to +6 as you gain levels
Hello guys I've been wondering how I could find some people to play DND with I've only played once and not a full campaign so I'm still new to it

When you roll damage on an attack, what all dice do you use
The weapon determines what dice.
Which can be found in the Weapon section in the Basic Rules
People get things wrong all the time, even professional D&D folks. Try not to sweat it and try to keep it in mind going forward. That's all that can be asked of anyone.
So as a Paladin I add my strength and proficiency bonus for attack?
For your to-hit roll, yes.
and then for damage since I have a greatsword+1 I roll 2 d6 plus what
strength
And that extra +1.
when you roll to hit, it is a d20+strength+proficiency
roll for damage, it is (damage die, EG) 1d6+strength
Your +1 weapon will apply to both the attack roll and the damage roll. So its what Hulsker just said except with a +1 ontop of both those calculations
I have only played once and I need a session to join does anyone have any tips to find one
I have never played looking for a session too
#find-a-game @subtle crater @vital dove
I put a request in already, but thank you.
The LFG channels are where to look for games on this server -posting that you're looking outside of those channels will get moderated for being off-topic.
how dose ranged spell attacks work?
You roll your spell attack, which is a d20 + your Proficiency Bonus + appropriate modifier (wizards use Int)
im playing as a artificer rn i think that is int
Hey yall I’ve never played DandD in my life could anyone help

yo does anyone have anyone whos willing to teach me DND or basics of it all?
#LFG doesnt really have any action or attention so
have a look at the resources here
Can every Paladin smite be added on after the attack roll?
No. You have to read the details of the feature
The spell smites have to be cast in advance
Divine Smite, yes, if you have spell slots left. Other Smites, not necessarily.
This please
I play DnD table top, first edition and 5th. I am LFG
Are you looking for the channel…?
Hello
I'm new to dnd and I was wondering who I could ask if I created my character sheet correctly?
Did you make it on dndbeyond? You can link it in #character-discussion
I made it from watching a youtube video because I wanted a Dark Elf and DnDB didn't have it selectable. And I couldn't find the PHB on the marketplace to unlock it.
You could take a photo/screen grab upload to an image sharing site and link that
Can I post the PDF in #character-discussion ?
Yes
As a monk, can you attack one enemy, then move and use your bonus unarmed strike on another
yup
AWESOME
same with attack action afaik
afaik!?
(as far as I know)
ohhh.. awkward
I feel like if I ever DM, I am gonna end up scarring multiple players. I am a VERY descriptive person, and I know how to make a story that pulls on the heart strings. Only if I knew how to DM, lol
Only one way to learn…
Having a DM Tutor?
Well that was more of me saying, just have a go at it lol
Even right now, I am fairly certain I am still making characters in the wrong way. Multiple DM’s told me to do it differently, lmao
If you post the character sheet in #character-discussion we can check it over
I’d have to find one of my old sheets, I haven’t created a new one in a long time.
What were they telling you was wrong?
Each one had different reasons, some said the money, some said the items, some said the stats. When I showed it to two different DM’s, they both disagreed about what was wrong and what was right.
Anyways, I found a DND Beyond character I made
Just a heads up that each D&D group/game is different and they may have you create your characters in specific ways to best fit the kind of D&D game they are trying to run. This is normal.
Heya
New to D&D, been wanting to get into it, learn the rules, find friends, join a campaign. I've been wanting to get into it for the past 4 years and some YouTube video D&D sessions have really made me wanna get into it.

Hey me and my irl friends were thinking of getting into DnD, what are the stuff I need to know/buy/download/read
Know: the basic information of how the game runs
Buy: nothing, to start with
Download: nothing
Read: the free basic rules, linked in the bot message above
No dices? or the that Barrier thingy the DM has
Also arent there 3 rule books
The critical information from the 3 main rulebooks is all in the free basic rules
A DM screen is not critical, any barrier is fine (or no barrier if you trust your players)
You can use free online dice rollers
And there are free compaigns I assume then?
The following items on D&D Beyond can be claimed at no cost.
- Baldur's Gate 3 Set
- Baldur's Gate Gazeteer
- Descent into the Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth
- Giants of the Star Forge
- Honor Among Thieves Bundle
- Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden Dice Set
- Intro to Stormwreck Isle
- LEGO: Red Dragon's Tale
- Lightning Keep
- Monstrous Compendium Volume Two: Dragonlance Monsters
- Prisoner 13
- Unearthed Arcana Playtesting
Also check DMsGuild for free or pay what you want adventures.
Ah very helpful
Everything you've said I mean
Some monsters stats are only included in the monster manual book thought, right?
Correct - the free basic rules only include a subset of monsters found in the Monster Manual or Mordekeinan Presents Monsters of the Multiverse books. There’s a lot of them, but not all.
whats the HP calculation in 5e
all good
level 1 is class hp for level 1 (max of class hit die) + con mod
every level after is hit die + con mod
so for a fighter, 10+con mod level 1, 1d10+con mod every level after
you can also take the average of 6+con mod
whats barbarians hit die
1d12! The biggest one!
I'm gonna read the basic rules when I can, I just know myself and learning rules is always a bit harder for me in the beginning especially when getting them from a book
fair
Well I'll talk soon, hopefully I can figure things out a bit. And maybe this will get me back into art, so I can draw my characters
If you have any specific questions, you're more than welcome to pop back in here and hash them out with us!

D&D is not like a video game lobby you can just drop into. Scheduling is the biggest obstacle of setting up games.
Does it make sense that one of my players would have a +9 for one of their skills? This is my first time DM’ing
It's not impossible! Are they a Rogue?
Yes they are playing a Rouge with a criminal background
I can comfortably get +7 for a Rogue at 1st level. Trying to figure out where the extra +2 is coming from.
Then it's certainly possible, but it means they are starting with a 20 in the associated stat, which is pretty high!
rogue with expertise and a maxed-out skill can get +9 at level 1, it's possible
+2 from proficiency and +2 again because of the expertise feature
Don't RAW only allow you to go to 17 in an attribute?
rolled stats?
Ok so we messed up in character creation
it's the only explanation i guess
Depends on if they rolled for stats or not
Only if you're using point buy. Rolled stats theoretically could result in an 18 before ability scores
They tend to do that, don't they?
Very interesting!
Haven't used rolled stats in so long that I always forget it's still OK.
it would require they get three 6s, on the 4d6 you roll for stats, but if they did then played a race that gave +2 to dex its possible to have a 20 in dex at level 1. Then you simply need to take expertise in a dexterity based skill, to get +9
He has a +3 dex modifier
Vhuman is +1 to 2 stats
yeah i realized 😭
Ok, if thats the case than +9 is incorrect
+3 dex, and expertise in a dex based skill would give you +7
You're probably adding the proficiency bonus twice somewhere
this is at level 1, right? if you are starting at level 5 then expertise adds +6 so +9 is plausible with +3 dex
Wouldn’t it be plus +4 since you double proficiency bounds with Expertise?
3+4=7
Oh shit I’m dense

Hi there! I've been wanting to get into DND for a while as a player, especially after playing Baldur's Gate 3. Looking to play as either a monk or spellcaster first. My only issue right now is that my work schedule is not static and I often work up to 10 PM EST. But I'm looking to get into a game soon and maybe make some friends along the way.
Check #find-a-game
Thanks
i learn more when I am taught by someone. so is there anyone that is able to teach me how to play as I go through a game?
The learn-to-play sessions for the virtual weekend may be of interest, then: #dnd-announcements message
Thank you, I really appreciate that
grrr
i want to
i want to play a single short game with someone as my Abnormally Huge 5 meter tall Golem of Steel which tries to be evil but is good by nature
Please read #find-a-game to learn how to use our Looking For Game channels to find a game
oh nice
So ik there are different editions of the game based on the books. They have different rules and different ways to do things.
Am I also correct in understanding that some people create their own versions. Like with Superheroes or Rebellions?
Some folks have taken the SRD (the free basic rules for D&D) and created different types of games based off the mechanics of D&D.
D&D is currently in it's 5th edition - if you wish to discuss older versions of D&D we have the #dnd-elder-editions channel.
If you wish to discuss third-party products (D&D books published by folks other than D&D) we have #third-party.
If you wish to discuss other game systems (including those built off the D&D SRD) you can use #non-dnd-topics.
Along with what UndyingNoob said, other “versions” like Pathfinder, Cyberpunk: RED, Lancer, Mutants & Masterminds, etc are different TTRPGs (tabletop roleplaying games) rather than D&D variants. D&D just happens to be one of the most popular TTRPGs so it’s often conflated with the genre as a whole. It’s like calling all superhero movies variants of the MCU, or all fantasy books derivatives of LotR
I see, thanks
@coral bison
can you use the steed's attack while mounted on it?
oh n do u need to do an attack roll fpr Magic missile? or just choose a target n damage?
Mounts can only dash, dodge, or disengage as an action. See https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#MountedCombat
Magic Missile has no attack roll in the spell description, so none is needed.
So I don't have 5th edition yet, or anything yet. But I saw the Warforged, they seem like an awesome race.
Can the Warforged be Sorcerers, Warlocks, or other classes that use magic?
A feature will specifically call for am attack if it is needed
Any race can be any class
Absolutely!
That's awesome
I'm huge on the idea of magic, especially range attacks, like casting elemental attacks. I really like all the races but Dragonborn, Gensai, and Warforged have caught my eye.
I suggest you start by reading the basic rules

See above
I am, it's taking some time
I also don't have a lot of money atm, so can't get any of the other books rn to read, so I can't use many races
You can start playing for free with just the free basic rules. Yes you won't have all of the possible character and class options, but again, you can start playing with just the free stuff.
hello there
Alright
Do you have to pay money to make a character of a certain race? If so, how does that work if you’re playing online?
Some character options (races, classes, spells, magical items) are sold in books (kind of like DLC). You have to own the books or be in a group that has access to those books, to access that content.
As of right now the following sites sell digital access to D&D books:
- DnDBeyond
- Roll20
- FantasyGrounds
- FoundryVTT (currently they only have the Shattered Obelisk adventure for sale)
Yeah that's what I figured, I'll have to see what book has the Warforged in it.
You can find that in Eberron: Rising from the Last War
I see, does everyone in the group need to have the same book? Or maybe just the DM?
So DnDBeyond offers content sharing in a campaign. Someone in the group needs to have a Master Tier subscription and enable content sharing on a DnDBeyond campaign (a place to group all the character sheets and have a shared game log). Once that's enabled, everyone's books and materials from DnDBeyond can be shared with everyone else in that campaign.
I see, and is it viable to play on your phone…? Sadly my laptop is broken
DnDBeyond has a mobile app and generally you can play on mobile devices although larger screens do make things better IMO.
Some Virtual Tabletops (like Roll20) are not great or useable on a mobile device but others (Owlbear.rodeo or DnDBeyond Maps) can work decently well.
Thanks
Are they also in Wayfinder's guid to Ebberon?
Hey everyone I was wondering if anyone can pm and talk me through how to fully play. My friend who play don't want to tell me since they don't know how to "explain" it to me. I'll take some feedback and tips if possible 🙂

#looking-for-players seems to be the place where people join campaigns
Check #find-a-game (read the instructions carefully).
When using Find Steed, can you control the actions of the steed even when not mounted? ie could I dismount from a war horse and still have it attack or move towards another player?
Oh and does the Fae/Fiend/Celestial choice have any difference other than flavor and what spells effect it? Resistances, abilities, etc?
In 5E creature types don't have global resistances, abilities, etc. Those are specified in their individual monster statblock. Spells and other magical effects will say if they affect or not specific creature types (or not).

The basic rules are a good start to read
Hiya, upcoming player/dm here, I'm a little confused on how time passes in DnD and also spell duration. I know that in combat a turn is ~6 secs, but how does it work out of combat? If i cast "Aid" for example, it has a duration of 8 hours, how is this counted?
One round in combat is 6 seconds long.
Out of combat is "real time" (the DM decides how fast time passes).
So out of combat, its basically whatever the dm decides
some dms put actual timers, other dms count the number of actions
other DMs just guestimate
okay thanks!
seems that there aren't that many rules as to out of combat actions or rules in general
It's all DM's call because it's very situational.
Hello
That kinda confuses me. Wdym by "one round"? Does it mean like, 1 action of any character? Or does it mean like 1 whole cycle of turns?
One round is all the turns of all the creatures in an initiative order before it goes back to the first creature in initiative order.
a round is 6 seconds, in those 6 seconds, everyone involved in the combat takes their turn. turns happen theoretically at the same time, but they get resolved in order of initiative
Are there any good Youtubers to go to for class guides? I want to know as much as I can about my class (and a Rogue) before starting a campaign 🙂
dungeon dudes have pretty good guides for the basics on each class
I'll have to digest and give chapter points for my girlfriend to jump to 😅
Thank you! 🙏

Hi there everyone, i am a newcomer that wants to join in on a campaign to see how things go. I am more of a visual learner than anything else, so I think having an actual session would help me understand the layout of this game more. I have built a character that is a half-elf bard and i would like to see if there is any options i could tweak before getting into a session. If anyone needs more information, I would be happy to bring anything up!
?looking
Hi there! You can use the instructions in #find-a-game to apply to games. In addition, if you're looking for feedback on your character you can always post a link to it over in #character-discussion .
Dyno is rather slow this morning.
lol
I'm giong to be honest and say that you will still need to read the rules. D&D is a game of rules and if you go into a game knowing nothing about the rules and expect the DM to pause the game constantly to teach you then you may have trouble finding such a table to join.
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
I understand, and will be reading more into the rules before joining. My apologies
Hello everyone 🙂
Hi guys, me and my friends want to run a campaign via discord, can anyone give me some advice on maps is there a specific software to use?
Come on bots, do your job!
The short answer is that you're probably looking for a VTT (Virtual Table Top)!
Hers the link: #dnd-newcomers message
I'd recommend checking out Owlbear Rodeo or Roll 20, as they both don't require money to use
Owlbear rodeo is fantastic
Hey,just know that joining a game dosent happen in the snap of a finger
I strongly advise you first learn all of the basics
Make sure you know how your abilities and character works
Theirs about 1 DM per 20 players,so you better make yourself count if you wanna find a game!
honestly u should check ur local libraries events, its how i got to play my first session about a week ago
So people don't actually play dnd here? like gather on a VC, start rollin? lol
Nope. The server is more for discussion and finding D&D games.
By finding D&D games, you mean, irl?
no there's online lfg stuff too
Some, though the majority are for online play.
you can check #find-a-game for more information about that
Most of the posts in our LFG channels are for online D&D games
So you advertise your character, and people just invite you on a different server to play?
Or you respond to posts by DMs looking for players.
Oh Okay I guess
Not really
you just put a post as a player that you're searching for games
or look for dms yourself
If you want quick and easy session where you hop in hop out,id advise looking for a westmarch server
I explored a bit and applied in the LFG section
Don't expect to use the character you created because the DM may have restrictions for their campaign.

so far to what I applied didn't specify anything so I just applied with a character I want to play
Remember, most of the time, dms prefer creating the character with the player as a safegate for understanding
I strongly advise not spending too much time making the exact character and just explore concepts instead!
Well it's nothing set in stone, a preferred class mostly
Thats good
Hope you the best in dungeonning your dragons or whatever players do
I sure hope I find something! Its very difficult to find a group near me 😅
I've managed to play a few games, longest game I had was a year
Finding folks to play with is definitely tricky, but there are luckily a lot of avenues in addition to this server.
I’m not new to DND, but I’ve never done any online DND. Any tips to finding play groups on here?
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
And I don’t really use discord so all the links this bot is sending me to is kinda confusing 🤣
#find-a-game has instructions if you read through it entirely.
Cool thank you
So how do i play this

I have a friend who has run a few campaigns for my group. Just now we’re starting to use something akin to a more traditional DnD style
Please do no block Dyno or Monodrone, that will make it much harder to be apart of this server.
For ability scores? no.
Then what do I do
Have you read the free Basic Rules yet? The first four chapters are on character creation.
DM dependent, it’ll either be 4d6 (ignore the lowest roll and add the other 3 to get your stat) or point buy, those are most common 2 ways
That's the Standard Array.
Yup! The Standard Array is the classic way to assign your stats.
When using Find Steed, can you control the actions of the steed even when not mounted? ie could I dismount from a war horse and still have it attack or move towards another player?
That's a #dnd-rules question more than a newcomer one!
Sh ok I’ll ask it there, thx
Hi
Hi guys I just joined
Welcome
something i don't understand with spell scroll is
picking them up is an action
then how is it profitable to cast a bonus action with them?
You can pick it up and use it on the same turn?
And I sort of agree with you, it should be a bonus to pick it up and an action to use it but sorts out the same
Spell scrolls are super powerfull
activating the scroll = casting the spell
for faith does it have to be a actual religion that has like worshippers and such or can it just be a god?
can you though?
they can't cast the spell written on it
Yes they can
That's the point of the scroll creation, it inscribes the magical essence into the parchment
With a check any player can attempt to cast the spell from the scroll
Suddenly, your baboon companion is a lethal fireball yeeter
If the spell is on your class’s spell list, you can read the scroll and cast its spell without providing any material components. Otherwise, the scroll is unintelligible.
i'm pretty sure that spell scrolls can only be used if the spell is from your class' spell list, as in you can learn the spell on your own if/when you're high enough level
i don't know if they updated this though with XGTE having new spell scroll scribing rules and all
is there a specific channel to talk about new character creation?
thanks
with a check, you can try to cast a spell that is from a higher level than you can cast
that is on your class spell list
Hey folks, let's keep the channel clear for new to D&D folks to ask questions about basic game rules and mechanics
^?
That section is more for if your character follows particular dieties/pantheon in your game's setting. But it's mostly roleplay and less mechanical.
Usually it’s a singular diety, but that section is optional and can be a cause or similar thing people typically “believe in”
alr cool, i was just wondering as most the time i just skip it but the dm im playing with is insisting i have to fill it in since im a cleric
In most D&D settings faith is a bit different since the gods have tangible evidence of existence. Much like if you were an Ancient Greek you’d believe in the whole pantheon but dedicate service to Athena specifically
It basically refers to dietys, Gods. You don't necessarily need to be worshippers of that God but rather a simple thought is enough evoke the powers. Example a Paladin can evoke the powers of Helm if that is the diety chosen, but you don't necessarily need to belong to a church or specific temple or be a devotee of Helm to evoke the dieties powers.
Additionally it just adds flavor to the game and shapes your character/class a little more but doesn't serve any real mechanic in the game.
And awesome I am also working on a cleric, I chose the diety Lathander, as the what the God represents enhances my character. I also chose the Order of the Sun Soul as used it as background for the Light Domain abilities
Clerics and paladins don't need to be devoted to a deity but can be simply a faith in an ideology/philosophy or a force.
A paladin could literally be a cop.
Oath of the Crown paladin swears allegiance to a state/nation/kingdom.
Exactly.
(Between Captain Americanary and Eve, I've had a lot of reason to think about Crown Paladins over the last several months)
Oath of pancakes paladin
I’d swear to that
Wouldnt we all?
You could be hailing from something like candy kingdom from adventure time
I had a pretty unique paladin concept for the campaign I was gonna play in
Sadly DM had a meltdown a week before the game so its another character in the trashcan
Oh thats a good advice we should give more often to new players
Campaigns will fail,and thats normal
Its verry unlikely that your first game ends in a matt mercer esque chef-d'oeuvre
Youll probably have a couple of duds before ever finishing a campaing for the first time, and thats 100% ok
Indeed. Well said.
True.
Though there are some key things groups can do to set themselves up for success.
Communication, setting expectations and boundaries (and sticking to them), setting a regular schedule of when folks will try to play.
100%
Recognizing that we're playing a game together and we should focus on ensuring everyone has fun.
I always encourage groups to having a session zero and asking some key questions.
Such as:
- What kind of campaign does everyone want to play?
- Linear (The storyline usually follows a cause-and-effect relationship, where each event directly leads to the next.)
- Non-Linear (The storyline that has story events can done in any order. Think Legend of Zelda games)
- Sandbox (The storyline has no pre-determined events and no overarching plot.)
- How much role-play, exploration, and combat do you want in the campaign?
- 1 social, 1 combat, 1 dungeon encounter per session?
- Perhaps 1-3 social, 1-2 combat, 0-1 dungeon counters per session?
- What is the desired level difficult?
- Easy, medium, hard, deadly?
- How easily and often can characters be resurrected?
- How much of a time commitment does everyone want to invest in the campaign?
- Have the campaign be 3 session? 5-8 session? 12 sessions? 12+ sessions?
- Should each sessions be 2 hours, 4 hours, 6 hours, 8 hours? 2-4 hours?
- Would each session be weekly, bi-weekly, monthly?
- What lines and veils need to be established?
- Lines are hard limits on themes, topics, actions someone doesn't want to engage in.
- Veils are soft limits where themes, topics, actions can be explored but not in great detail.
- Are everyone's preferences and expectations compatible?
- Do all players want to play the same type of campaign?
- Is the the type of game players want to participate in, the type of game the DM wants to run?
Can i ask what will be a Gladiator like the character in For Honor type build? I wanted to try something out like that idk if i come here for that type of advice but decided to
A fighter or barbarian class can work well for that.
You can also pick up the Gladiator background as well.
But a gladiator character is charismatic they're entertainers shouldn't they also have a bard type effect or something with showmanship? Or is that a wrong way to interpret it?
Truth. Even one off shot campaigns will lead to characters in the trash 😅 and groups can fall apart any minute
I found that online groups tend to be way mroe unstable than IRL ones
When it comes to bringing over character concepts to D&D, look past the flavor of classes and abilities and focus on the mechanics.
Doing so, can allow you to bring a character concept to life through the support of those mechanics.
Due to the lack of actual consequences for just dissapearing, people tend to less communicate and just dip out under the sun
it's hard to retain players online but i guess it's also easier to recruit since there's no travel requirement to attend a sess
tradeoffs 😔
Ah that makes sense then
Definitely give it a shot.
One example I give people is a Biotic Character from the Mass Effect series.
I used custom lineage, took the telekinetic feat, choose the wizard class, then picked the Graviturgist subclass.
Sounds confusing don't i have to pay to add the gladiator background? Or is there an app y'all use besides d&d beyond?
It can be.
I tend to establish online groups with people I already know through D&D Adventurers League.
Creating campaign groups with people I have established history with helped me signficantly.
To get access to the gladiator background you'll need to purchase the players handbook.
You can no longer purchase partial content from books.
Ehhh thats one thing im not really one to pay for those things but probably when i save up I'll get it just trying to get a game in with my friends they wanted to try it too just need a DM and a place to play
An alternate option you can use is to create a custom background using the guidelines through the free basic rules.
For new people trying to get into the game, I recommend just starting out with the free basic rules and checking out books through your local library.
Wait there's d&d books in the library?
you'll have to search whether they are available at your local library but generally yes you can find the sourcebooks in libraries
Insane well thanks hopefully i can find some DM willing to accept 8 players
That is going to be rather tough.
usually groups are 4-5 people, it might be hard to find a dm experienced/willing to run a game for that many players
Your better option would be each of you taking turns at DMing by running a pre-written adventure meant to be completed in a single session. Also known as a one-shot.
Well if anything we'll probably cut off people who are wouldn't really want to play so it'll be just 5
You could also have one person DM a one shot for half of your group.
Then have one of the players DM the same one shot for the other half of the group.
That way everyone has an opportunity to play be a player, including the first DM.
Nobody knows how to play as a DM we're all new
Then learn
Dms dont just spawn experienced and ready
Its an aquired skill
The greatest DMs were newbies at one point.
You can't gain experience if you don't try and fail.
That’s fine.
DMs, don’t need to know all the rules to start.
This is why I recommend a pre-written adventure.

Every time I see new players complaining about not finding DMs,and ask them if they ever tried being a dm before,I always get the same answer:
"Id rather get some experience first"
My brother in the 9 gods,if you can't find a game, your only way of getting experience is being a dm,so try it
Guess I'll try it because i know none of my friends would want to be it just going to be weird to me because my friends might pull some outlandish shi and I'd have to roleplay that
Set boundaries
Trust me of I'm the DM they'd do everything in their power to make it uncomfortable thats why having a stranger be the DM makes them normal because it'll be a 8v1 i would just have to accept it but I'll see and pray they accept boundaries once i learn the rulebook and stuff where do i go for that? Also do i need the tabletop items and which one is the best to get?
Ok so your genius plan to avoid being uncomfortable
was getting a stranger to be uncompfortable for you?
Yes, definitely set expectations and boundaries.
I recommend setting up a session zero to help with that. While this doesn't cover everything you can use these questions as a reference: #dnd-newcomers message
No because my friends act normal around strangers
Try DMing for 3-4 players.
Use a pre-written adventure, which you can find on dndbeyond and the dmsguild website.
Tell the group in advance what what kind adventure you are interested in running.
Then explain what obligations the players will need commit to in order for you to go ahead an run a one shot.
Finally, determine if the type of game you want to run is the type of game they want play and vice-versa.
The key take away from all of this to communicate with your group and see if collaboratively a game can be played in which everyone at the table has fun, including the DM .
Also, you are 100% allowed to say no. You are under no obligation to go along with something uncomfortable just because you agreed to run the game.

Hiyya
hihi
How exactly does the sleep spell work?
Roll 5d8 (5 to 40) and that total is the number of hp worth of enemies affected.
Do they take any damage or just go unconscious?
Theyre just out like a light.
Read the spell:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/sleep
This spell sends creatures into a magical slumber. Roll 5d8; the total is how many hit points of creatures this spell can affect. Creatures within 20 feet of a point you choose within range are affected in ascending order of their current hit points (ignoring unconscious creatures).
Starting with the creature that has the lowest current hit points, each creature affected by this spell falls unconscious until the spell ends, the sleeper takes damage, or someone uses an action to shake or slap the sleeper awake. Subtract each creature’s hit points from the total before moving on to the creature with the next lowest hit points. A creature’s hit points must be equal to or less than the remaining total for that creature to be affected.
@lyric fjord @sonic fern The best thing I can tell you, as a new player and DM myself, is to just get one of the intro games like Dragons of Icespire Peak or Dragons of Stormwreck Isle. You can pick these up for $45 on Amazon and they come with everything that you will need to run the campaign. These are a great way to not invest a lot of money and to get the opportunity to run or play a campaign. In all honety, you just need to jump in and start learning. Everyone will run a campaign different so you don't have to worry about screwing anything up. You will learn as you go and you can tweak the game to your likings. Want random encounters on your way to a mission? Throw in some Bandits or goblins on your way. "You run across a fallen tree that is blocking the main path. There is a steep wall to the left and a small pond to the right. What do you do" Boom. It's that easy. Stop wondering how badass D&D is and just jump straight in and find out for yourself. You can find a lot of good videos on YouTube if you need help and guides, but EVERYONE is different and they will all give you different ideas and opinions. In the end, it's up to the DM. I hope this helps and I really hope you like it. I started brand new a few months ago and I am DMing a game for my family and having a lot of fun. I will say that out of the two starters I listed, I am playing Icespire and it is just an Ok campaign. I have heard a lot of good things about Stormwreck Isle and it is called the Starter Set.
I got a stormwreck isle set
Still confused on modifiers and damage when attacking
And leveling up
wait so one question is that spell that you are talking about?
Anyone know any vids that can help me with
Levels
Xp
Damage
Modifiers
When you attack, you roll a d20, and add your appropriate modifier based on your weapon (usually strength for melee and dexterity for ranged), then if you're proficient with said weapon, you also add your proficiency bonus
If that total meets or beats the AC of the target, you hit
The damage is the weapon's damage die plus the modifier you used for the roll

BG3 is a great way to get into 5e! There are some differences in mechanics, but if you know how to play BG3 you know a good percentage of 5e too.
We also have #learn-to-play but above resources can help you get started! You don't need to read all of the rules before finding a game, but having a look over character creation and combat rules before finding a game can help speed things up. And of course you can ask questions here!
Character Creation is one of the things you can have a go at before finding a game. There are step by step guides, and as a practice PC you don't need to think too hard. You can just pick any 'Basic rules' class and race and see if you can make it- once you've made one PC you've basically got the idea for making any PC.
For character sheets you can use the printable/ editable character sheets from WotC such as this fillable form version or you can create a character on Dndbeyond
Note that on dndbeyond your access to options will be limited to the free access races and creatures unless you purchase more, or homebrew. Feel free to ask here if confused by anything.
Then it's finding a game. You can use the instructions in #find-a-game to post if the LFG channels here but there are also other places to look into, including Adventure League (official organised play) other platform's LFG (Like roll20, r/lfg on reddit) so on. Or find an in person game by kidnapping getting together some friends or looking into local game shops.
What happens when you roll a nat 20 on hit dc ?
Its a guaranteed success on the attack, referred to as a Critical Hit
You also double the amount of dice rolled for damage

Hello, my name is Guykαros. I am a fan of DnD and i am looking for a new adventure a new group and a new experience. our last journey ended early cause of life and stuff. i am a "newcomer" a little bit, but i am passionate about things i like, like DnD. I want to play as an Ranger to begin
Welcome! Feel free to check the pinned messages here in the channel for useful links and reosurces to help get you started.
If you're looking for a group, please read #find-a-game
It explains how our Looking For Game channels work.
I'm not very experienced with building characters but I can help you with one as a starting character
I would definitely need some of your preferences
I would suggest you find a group and do a session zero before you build a character. DnD is a group activity, where everyone playing is involved
I can agree with that
Hello I'm Niko and i have a group but everyone is a newbie so we dont rlly know what to do is there anyone willing to help up please?
has the campaign started yet?
We printed a Character sheet but we're getting nowhere with the tutorials
if im two handing my staff which is a arcane focus can i still cast spells that require it or do i have to one hand it again?
So have a look over the options, pick a race and a class.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/races
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes
I was thinking on a human ranger and my friend is a human wizard
I'll have a look thx
Pick your starting ability scores from this list: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
We did that we're stuck on the backgound
There's a list here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/personality-and-background#Backgrounds
But basically, pick from acolyte, criminal, folk hero, noble, sage or soldier. It doesn't have to be a precise fit, just go with what seems closest.
Cleric that used to be in the army? Wizard that used to be a con-man? Rogue that used to be a nun? All possible.
Aragon (from that movie) was a ranger with a noble background, right?
Kay we did it the wizard had to go so he's out but the dm fills it out with me
The ranger is folk hero and the fighter is a Soldier
Sounds fair!
What's next?
Have you picked your skill proficiencies from your class and background?
Nope
I cant find the background proficiencies
im new so how do i get into some campaigns with people?

- You can also search on the Looking for Group forums page of warhorn, roll20, dndbeyond, the website called startplaying, and dnd focused discord servers.
Since you're having a session zero, here are some questions your group can ask to help set yourselves up for a successful campaign.
- What kind of campaign does everyone want to play?
- Linear (The storyline usually follows a cause-and-effect relationship, where each event directly leads to the next.)
- Non-Linear (The storyline that has story events can be done in any order.
Thanks I'll save that for later
Hello im new to dnd. i want to see if it suits me. So, i have a qus can i play dnd online for free?
Theres the basic rules on DnDbeyond which is free. So if you have a group to play with you can play easily.
though you should prob read through the first 4 chapters before playing since thats the rules for players.
Hello! I’m about to start my first ever DND campaign in a couple of weeks. I am having trouble deciding between Land Druid or some form of cleric as my first character. Any advice or recommendations as to which would be good for entry level gameplay?
Flip a coin? Joking aside is there anything about these classes that really speaks to you? Something you feel would be fun to try out?
I’ve always played some form of spellcaster or healer in every video game I play as I really enjoy that playstyle. I love nature and light themed magic (holy priest main in WoW) so I think both classes fit me.
I do understand that combat healing in DND is not typically a good choice so I’m prepared for that
I'd say give druid a try.
I was trying to read about both and I kept seeing that Druid was complicated; however, land Druid looked pretty straight forward and it seemed like a good fit (even if I’ve read people think it’s boring)
Casters in general are a bit more complicated than martial classes because you'll have to manage your spells (at least for Druids it's just picking which spells you'll have prepared for the day, same for cleric), making sure you have the spell components if your DM requires that in detail, and then understanding as a player what the spells do so you can pick the right one for the right effect.
That said, if you like the idea, give it a shot. Everyone started new at some point!
Most of us will be fairly new so I don’t feel super pressured to know everything right away. I’m excited!
Is ddb or owl(what was it again?) Free to use?
Owlbear rodeo is a free VTT
D&D Beyond has a free account tier (you can have up to six characters) but you need to buy (or be shared with) the digital books to have access to additional content beyond what's in the free Basic Rules/SRD.
Thank you people very much
Can I use a Shield and a two handed weapon at the same time if I strap the shield to my arm to leave my hands free?
The game rules do not allow this. You either get to use your shield or you can use a two-handed weapon but you can't use both at the same time (and get their benefits of both).
Can anyone recommend a good starter class? I'm thinking something with spellcasting abilities, even if it's not their main aspect.
My friend played a warlock for her first character, and she seemed to like it. There are less spells to keep track of. Though, the customization could be a bit overwhelming if you're not starting from level one
Okay, I'll take a look!
Where is a good place to start?
Hi yall

So, I’ve read the first couple of chapters of the basic rules, about six chapters I believe
Honestly the DnD beyond app is a little confusing to me, I don’t have access to a desktop which would probably make things easier. However, is there any way to choose the satyr race without buying it? Or is it the only way?
If you were in a game with someone who had access to the content and enabled content-sharing, you'd be able to use it. If you owned the physical book, you could also create the race privately using the homebrew tools. Otherwise yeah, you'd need to buy the content.
Depends, some DMs dont use dnd beyond
Yeah that was the only way I was able to make an Aasimar baha
Question on mounted combat: if mounted on a warhorse does this mean your turn can be moving 30ft to an enemy, attacking it, disengaging, and moving 30ft back, meaning if the enemy doesn’t have ranged ability or excessive movement your effectively untouchable unless it uses most of its movement to go towards you?
Here is the mounted combat guidelines in the free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#MountedCombat
#dnd-rules Will be able to help you with that.
From what I understand it wouldn't work like that because for the horse's turn you would use it's movement to get to the targer and you would have to choose between the Dash, Disengage, or Dodge action. Afterwards, the horse's turn would end and your turn would start. In which case your PC can use it's action to attack.
Question... played a game today where the NPCs were playing basically Liar's Dice.
I used minor illusion to win and it worked, but I told the DM I was using it before hand.
Which made me think, that game is about lying to your opponent and them not knowing what you have.
Telling the DM (i.e. the NPC) would possibly change how they play.
How does that work? Do I still tell the DM beforehand?
Do I not tell the DM and once I win and the encounter is over, THEN tell them I used it?
The PCs and NPCs can use an Insight check (against a Deception roll) to see if the opposing creature is truthful.
I have a ring of mind protect.
Which I think basically means they can't.
mind shield or something.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/magic-items/4725-ring-of-mind-shielding
While wearing this ring, you are immune to magic that allows other creatures to read your thoughts, determine whether you are lying, know your alignment, or know your creature type. Creatures can telepathically communicate with you only if you allow it.
Okay, then your opponents don't know you're lying but the dice nor the illusions are lying. The NPCs could roll a Perception check to see if they notice something odd with the illusion covering the dice.
This is the DM's call.
Do you have questions about learning the game itself?
Well that's my question... do I tell the DM when by telling him it might change the NPCs actions in game when normally they wouldn't suspect a thing?
I guess what I mean is in a way, the DM himself is playing Liar's Dice, but he knows I'm bluffing. When in game, the NPC wouldn't.
So he might make calls and bets that he normally wouldn't.
If that makes sense.
You should tell the DM the game mechanic (in this case the illusion spell) you want your character to use before you do it rather than after the fact.
The DM when portraying the NPCs should act as if they don't have the metaknowledge you had cast the spell.
That's a catch 22. Once they know, they can't unknow or even really act like they didn't know.
But if the general rule is tell DM everything, I guess that's the rule. Thank you!
I would say that's "Tell the DM everything" is a good general rule: they are the filter through which you interact with the game/world, so you need to be honest with them. A good DM will work hard to avoid acting on knowledge that they have as the DM but the NPCs they control do not have.
OK. Mine is such a niche case too.
Another question since I'm here... what are you guys using pact of the chain familiars for? I know invisible scouting... anything else that's super useful?
Used mine today to see if an NPC was more or less generally good or bad with the sprite.
That's more #character-discussion, though I suspect scouting is a popular use, as is offering Help in combat.
1st time wanting to play d&d there is so much stuff. i have already made a character but trying to find a group is hard (because time mostly)
I don't know how to Voice act very well, I can do a few generic voices like a country guy and a knight but that's it
I try to do others but the voice changes every few minutes and I forget how to do it, How can I improve this?
You're not contractually obligated as a DM to make a unique voice for every npc
exept for goblins
I mean as a player
Well you also dont need to do a silly voice for your character
You can speak at third person,or use your normal voice
for exemple,im a guy, when I need to voice female npcs,I just use my normal voice,or I try the cringiest princess voice possible, cuz thats always fun
just know,if you feel that "ick thats cringe" feeling, ignore it.
This is dnd,we're a bunch of nerds throwing fireballs in our make believe world, try your best and have fun
I love that, reminds me of "hey guys" from a specific anime bahahahahaha

Thank you
I dont watch anime so I dont get that reference
Remember, cringe is temporary, but your friends will always laught at that silly gremlin voice you made, and thats priceless
Imagine your character is a guy, a very manly manly man with big bulging muscles and you dress up in a skirt and makeup dolling yourself up to get past guards and your character of course has a level in bard "hey guys~"
I have done that-
You can make your characters more distinct by considering a character's word choices when speaking.
Your voice can stay the same but characters can be distinct by their chosen vocabulary.
For my necromancer gnome-
Reminds me a funny anecdote
Thanks for the tip!
Though at this point we're getting beyond the scope of #dnd-newcomers
I'm so confused
it was the only time I got to be a player (im a forever dm)
I played that arachnid atheist warforged Paladin,a war veteran with a verry fatherly attitude,
once their was a cute dog,so of course,I proceeded to utter a verry hight pitched "Eeeeeeeeee"
Im a DM,I have to do that every week
(my players love bothering goblins)
Hey, can someone briefly explain how to design a campaign? My group is new to DND, and they want me to be a DM.
Relatable
I'm too new to be giving any advice, sorry
I can
Heyy, im super new. Nice to meet you all! I’ve never played DnD but I’ve watched legends of Avantris, does that count? lol
Welcome! If you want to get your journey started you can check out #learn-to-play . Otherwise there’s a link to the free basic rules, an introductory demo, and a video guide series (Handbooker Helper) in this channel’s pins
Hi I'm really new to both Discord and DnD, I've 'played' DnD before, kinda (I played with my friends, there was no dungeon master and everyone just added to the story, there was no introduction, nothing lmao).
sounds more like freeform roleplaying than DnD. if you want to get into DnD, check out the information in this bot post:

So I’m a new player, I’ve decided to go with tiefling sorcerer, how do I cast spells? And is this a good class to start?
Read the free Basic Rules (see bot links above).
Thamks for now. Now I gotta Run Faster...
Hey!! Just getting into DnD thanks to some friends and BG3. Looking forward to finding an irl game of dnd and diving in deeper ⚡️
Heleuw im a new player so new im still shiny out of the package.. and i have no idea where to start! If anyone has some tips for me would love to recieve 😁
Quick question, what is VTT?I see some people using it in the LFG channels but I don’t know what it means.
Virtual Table Top
It's an app that lets you share maps and tokens
Hi, I'm thinking of picking up the d&d starter set today, will anyone help me learn to play?
Ok,thanks.
We can help answer any question you have here, but sounds like you need to wrangle some friends together and play that starter set module!
Thank you
looking for a group aswell
as player
thanks
once i get the set how do i play with people online?

Good luck and welcome to the hobby
Hello 👋 completely new and looking forward to learning how to play. If anyone could give some direction on where to start and how to play, that would be awesome, thank you 😊
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
Hi there! What do I do when I level up? I recently played D&D at the recent local event held by the Adventurer's league and at the end of the session, I had levelled up. Due to the fact that it was getting late, I didn't have the time to ask the DM what to do when I levelled up.
Check with the folks in #adventurers-league
ok
Ok I’m still trying to play dnd (have no one to play with) but have a basic grasp on it but I have one question. If I were to play a Dragonborn wizard with a fire draconic ancestry would I be able to use fireball and it fail and I wouldn’t take any damage?
Resistances don't stack. If you have fire resistance from one thing (Dragonborn) and from another source (Sorcerer draconic ancestry) you still only have resistance, not immunity.
Ya that makes sense, I thought that draconic ancestry was unity but it makes sense to be resistance instead, thank you
Can someone help me play Dragonlance: Warriors of Krynn?
Search for it homie
Ive tried
"inquiring" a specific campaign from the wrong chat won't get you anywhere
I cant find a whole lot of detailed info on what Im supposed to do
Try some more
I dont really understand the turns and how im supposed to use my abilities
Go into the "looking for dm" channel and make a post, then scour the "looking for players" channel and find games that ya wan't
Well theres not a discord specially for it
Read da rules
Theirs channels here specifically for that
How do I determine my skill proficiencies?
you get two from your background. Then you get a number from your class, usually 2, some classes give more. Then some races give you more proficiencies
But the numbers what do I calculate to get like a +12 to stealth or something
Hello.
I am new here, and frankly I have never played DnD before.
What do I do to get started? Read rules? Join a game and learn on the spot? Or something else?
your stealth would be dexterity modifier + proficiency bonus.
the only way to get +12 is with expertise at higher levels
The usual advice is to look over the basic rules, practice making a character or two, and start shopping for a game to join. Here are some links to help get started.
Have you played any tabletop RPGs before?
So how much is each bonus? Let’s say I get animal handling from my background It would be 3 + ???
I haven't, sadly.
Noted. Thanks.
proficiency bonus depends on your character level. What level are you?
6
then your PB is +3. Animal handling is usually WIS modifier so whats your Wisdom?
16
So it would be 3 + 3 + (What from animal handling?)
just +3 (PB) +3(WIS) for a total of +6
Wait
I’m saying that’s my base right, if I later down the line get proficiency with animal handling what do I add to my animal handling?
oh no, if you dont have proficiency its just +3
3 from Wisdom, and 3 more from proficiency if you have it.
ohhh okay
Have a look at the videos and read the first bit of the rules, they'll help.
So it’s just 3 and I get an extra 3 from proficiency in animal handling using my proficiency bonus.
yeah. I assume you got a character sheet and were not sure where the initial +3 came from?
No I do, I’m just going analog per my friends suggestion and realized I don’t know how to make a character
So used to DND Beyond doing it all for me.
ah well, DnD Beyond is taking away a lot of work from people but this is a good example of how this can lead to not understanding how some numbers got to be
ive just picked up the starter set and im trying to wrap my head around it, how do i find people and start leaning to play? i have the dragon of stormwreck isle set
good idea honestly to do a classic sheet once at least to really learn how stuff works in the background
I think I like analog more though and it seems like it’s better for new players to do it this way.
yeah it helps learning the game
Check this post (#dnd-newcomers message) for some useful links and videos on learning the game.
thank you
Thanks for the help, did you read this stuff in the basic rules book?
well in the PHB originally but yes its also in the basic rules
As a new DM, you might be better served by running a pre-written adventure. Running the game on its own has a learning curve, so building a world too just increases the degree of difficulty.
That said, this article has some advice you may find useful if you do go ahead with making your own campaign: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1671-how-to-write-a-d-d-campaign
I could give you advice, ive dmed homebrew campaigns for 5 years if thats worth something
But do you want to be a dm?
I'm new to DND Beyond and want to buy books, but I don't know how to get the races, classes, and subclasses. What are the top three to buy?
phb, motm, tcoe, xgte
Players Handbook, Tasha's Cauldron and Xanathar's Guide will give you a solid foundation.
- mordekainen presents (32 playable races)
Thanks
Hi everyone. complete newbie really wanna play. not played before. is there any dm's willing to take on a completely newbie.
Probably! Have you looked over the basic rules, maybe made a character for practice?
for the Stormwreck Isle starter kit the zombie's action slam says melee weapon attack: +3 to hit, reach ft., one target. Hit: 4 (1d6 + 1) bludgeoning damage - Double checking I understand this correctly. As Dm I roll D20 if the D20 is above the AC or the player it is a hit then I roll 4 1d6 add all of that then plus 1 for damage? Or is it just 1d6 for the damage?
For the attack, roll 1d20 + 3. If you equal or beat the target's AC that's a hit.
If you hit, it does an average of 4 damage. Alternatively you can roll 1d6 + 1.
In my one-shot adventures I often use the average. It's faster and more predictable. Players can more easily judge a threat that way.
Thank you
It would be so helpful if you could
Well, theirs lots of ways to come up with a campaign
mind if I dm you?
If you are live in an area that has a board game shop, a lot of them host a DnD night. I would call ahead and tell them you have never played before so they can set you up with a DM that is willing to teach you. I highly recommend the D&D company Youtube beginner videos so you have an idea of what to expect. On Youtube Sherlock Hulmes channel has a video called How to Play Dungeons & Dragons - A beginners guide to D&D - I felt it helped a lot to know the basics and to know what to expect at the D&D game I skip to marker 8:33 becuase I use pre made charters of D&D website or D&D Beyond to make it easier for myself. I have seen that the fighter is the easiest class, so that is what I play until I learn the game better. Going to a D&D game night makes a huge differnce. Roll20 .net has online D&D game you might be able to find a begginers game there I havent tried it yet but plan too
Have you looked into the starter kit? Its about $14 on amazon. There are a lot of videos on youtube to how to DM the starter kit assuming everyone is new. If you dont want to get the starter kit the videos might have some ideas for you. I googled D&D 1 shot games for beginners free and got s decent amount. Those could be helpful as well. Many articles said Death House is a great one shot.
Eh... death house can live up to its name and be kind of unforgiving
Thank you. That is good to know becuase I kill off my family trying to play it. 😆

Use the free materials linked above to get started
after you have read them (read, not skim), use this channel to ask questions about specifics
I love how people immidietely say "I dont understand anything" yet refuse to read the rules
Some people dont know about the pinned materials. Some i have queations about
well some human help is always prefered
Theres a difference between "a little help" and just refusing to put any effort in
well Im just pointing out a fackt I didnt now there were any guides
thanks for the bother that you had to go through
This is the #dnd-newcomers channel, that kind of comment is not helpful and welcoming. It is not cool to gatekeep. If you dont want to help newcomers that fine, but bashing them is not.
Not everyone learns the same way and as Ozymandias has stated are even aware the SRD is a thing.
Indeed - please be kind folks. We all started new at some point.
(But also we can't teach everyone all the game rules one on one due to time/bandwidth limitations so the more reading you do on your own, the easier it is for us to help you out)
hey sup what version and what platform most people play on here -new-
i just scrolled up... lol that was funny
Hard to say exactly but many people play 5E. As for what platform, it depends on how you want to play. You can play online or in person.
If you're new to D&D, it's probably best to start with the current and most popular edition; fifth edition
As for "platform", that'll be whatever your group uses; in person, discord, forums, etc
yup yup

ya i see. thanks
Hey everyone, thank you for having me! I'm testing the waters with doing DnD with some friends online, we're all completely brand new (no games ever played) we'd like to get into a campaign or one shot designed for new players with relevant support through the first steps of creating a group. I'd like to believe that if we enjoy it that we'd continue playing and maybe expand game time and maybe move to a campaign later on. Are there likely to be GM's that will be happy helping our group from the ground up or is it a general rule that GM's expect the minimum of character creation to be done and understanding the rules fully before they'll touch a group?
hey im new to dnd and i want to learn to play could anyone help me out by learning the basics?
Some DMs are more than happy to help new players create characters and learn the rules. Good option might be to make a #750812887697588356 post or check out #looking-for-players. You can also check out 3rd party sites like Roll20 for open games for new players.
Thanks @plucky ridge, I didn't want to assume before I moved forwards, appreciate the signposting, will go look!

I could help you! How new are you exactly?

You can learn a lot as you go along, and playing really does help the rules click.
But it is a good idea to have at least a rough idea of how to make a PC and how combat might go.
Making a practice PC is something you can do by yourself as well.
Okay, let’s start with that
alright
do you think we should move to a private chat to talk about the character creation
Sure
alr
Having a tough time making spell choices for land druid. We are starting at level 5 and it is my first time playing. So many concentration spells O.o
Hey recently joined in hopes of getting into a campaign
just need to know where to start

concentration is good because when you wildshape you can still maintain concentration
That is true, I just feel like I don't want to have like 80% of my spells be concentration. We are playing a one shot starting at level 5. Do you think the +2 WIS is mega important or would magic initiate cleric be okay? I was looking at that and it seemed fun.
which spells would you go cleric magic initiate for? just curious because usually its the other way around lol
im playing an arcane trickster rogue subclass into wizard and i was wondering why rogue can use wizard spells without a spellbook and if i dont need one for arcane trickster spells why i need a spellbook for wizard spells
because wizard use their spellbook and are nerds, a bard for example uses their instrument instead of a spellbook as well
clerics use their holy symbol
so if im subclassing into wizard am i only like half nerd
Toll the Dead, Spare the Dying, and Guiding bolt (or sanctuary)
that depends how many levels you take
guiding bolt is strong but toll the dead and spare the dying arent worth an entire feat imo
but if you think itd be fun im not stopping you
Because Wizards are prepared casters who can learn additional spells by copying them to their book, and arcane tricksters are known casters. They always have every spell they can cast available at all times (as long as they have spell slots left). Wizards, and other prepared casters, have to choose from a large list of spells at the end of a long rest. They only have their prepared spells available for that day rather than 100% of what's available to them. The tradeoff of prepared vs known casters is either a much greater list of spells vs always having everything you know available to you.
Arcane Tricksters can use the wizard spell list, but they aren't wizards. Like azerick said, they're known casters instead. Using the wizard spells list was probably just convenience so the developers didn't have to make one just for the subclass. Eldritch Knights do the same thing.
Gotcha. Not a super huge fan of ice knife so I was trying to come up with a better way to use my level 1 slots offensively haha. I guess Ill see what classes my friends will play too

I have 2 questions about dnd
- Are scrolls a thing/do they hold supercharged versions of spells? 2) Can a character dual wield/cast scrolls/spells
- scrolls are a thing they are just the regular spells and wizards can put them in their spellbook if its on their spell list 2. nope
Ok
A character can dual wield
A character can cast from scrolls
But not both at the same time because you need a free hand for using a scroll
Ok that’s fair. What about 2 spells at the same time?
you can cast a cantrip and a levelled spell in the same turn but no two levelled spells
Under certain circumstances you can cast more then one spell on your turn but not at the same time
You can cast two leveled spells in the same turn. Even three under the right circumstances
im talking generally here
I recommend to give the free basic rules a read. Most questions can be answered through them and explain how and what you can do during your turns.
Cantrips are like tools or trinkets right? Like a bag of metal shards?

What is theater of the mind?
Everything is narrated and imagined. So no battlemaps or dungeon floor plans etc
yo guys, im kinda new. I was wondering if DnD is just like a board game?
kinda like monopoly?
can wheelchair users play DnD?
Yes they can! I for an example i am one!
@wind valley
- No, it's not a board game, it's a tabletop roleplaying game. There are no required pieces of board, you can play just using a character sheet and your imagination
- Yes, wheelchair users can totally play D&D
thank you bro
I have a question about meta-gaming
Im watching realsmith's curse of strahd campaign as my first intro to table top games and i feel like im learning alot through the viewing exeprience
but one thing that confuses me is when it comes to hours long initative with alot of players , how do players avoid meta-gaming?
I imagine myself in that situation ,and i feel like people may end meta gaming even if i have full intention of not , because once you know what's going on in a different area,it's like already in your head . you know what i mean?
im wondering how does a well seasoned dnd player counters that issue
You don't have to 100% avoid metagaming, just the type of metagaming that makes the game less fun
Talking about hit points or conditions or turns is metagaming because those things don't exist in the world, but using them as tools help make the game work and thus more fun
Metagaming can be a negative when, for example, a player starts using out-of-game knowledge to diminish the experience. This can be stuff like reading the adventure to know what a monsters weaknesses are, or being confident the DM won't TPK the group because that's not how they DM and thus not taking an encounter seriously
It's the line between "Is this making the game more fun" and "Is this making the game less fun"
yeah i think those things are more obvious to me
