Have you used ai dungeon ?
Let's get back to official D&D please
No i havent.
We also don't allow AI-generated work here on this server (see server rules)
Sorry sorry!
We're fine for now - but yes check out the free basic rules (and see the pinned messages as well) and let us know if you have specific questions.
Okay, thank you!
Hello
Can someone help me make a character and all that cause I do not understand the videos
What are you having trouble with specifically?
Need someone to voice chat with ya through it?
Did you watch the "Handbooker Helper" video tutorials?
I don't remember who I watched but I watched a lot

Hi
Hey how’s it going
Good
Hey guys, basically I’ve been wanting to play dnd for years, and I’ve had one of the starter sets (the stranger things one💀) since it came out but I’ve never actually even attempted to play it as I didn’t get it. But I’ve decided this is something I want to start to play soon so I’m just wondering how I should get started?
Check out the links above! Also don't be afraid to find people who'd wanna help with more specific things!
Plus lots of us are down to help out with basics, it can just take some time (sometimes)
Thanks man ❤️
The first two steps are learn the rules, at least in a general sense, and find folks to play with. If you convince your friends to try it, you can learn as you play. If you're trying to join an existing group of strangers, you're probably better off reading over the rules first (again, to at least get the gist).
After you've done those things, you can do the logistical stuff like decide who the DM is, discuss expectations, figure out a schedule, and all that.
Ok thank you❤️❤️
What approaches did you use?
Results will vary on how someone tries to find a game.
Hello everyone, I'm fairly new to dnd and I want to try out a cleric because I know I'd hold people back so I'd like a good support role that can hold his own in a fight, but I don't really know where to start
What exactly is One D&D?
I was researching some things about the game's editions and I ended up coming across this, along with some little information. Would it practically be the 6E version of the game? What are its differences from 5E?
It was the playtest for the upcoming 2024 revision of 5E.
You can check out the Unearthed Arcana playtest materials for yourself:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/ua
cool, thanks for the help
If you have questions about the playtest material, ask in #1026901431132885064
In the end I was just curious. I wanted to know if it's true that they're going to change the half-race system that would allow for a hybrid between the races in the game
I didn't know we had a forum for that. Thanks for the help, again

Welcome to the hobby
The bot post above has a copy of the free basic rules so you can learn the basics and learn about the cleric class.
Clerics are a good beginner class and they also have a lot of offense capabilities as well.
If you're more of a visual learner, check out the hanndbooker helper series.
We also have the channel#learn-to-play that covers the basics as well if you'd like a quick reference.
Thank you so much! I'm trying to learn but is confusing
Thanks for telling me about the handbooker helper series though that'd help lots
Okay what's confusing you?
So much info and stuffs at once
Feel free to start with this video by one shot questers: https://youtu.be/zONEcUAYDfU
Is there a lfg for this discord? Looking to get into a campaign
If im a paladin is my attack modifier my strength modifier?
strength modifier (smaller number) plus proficiency bonus if you are proficient
with melee attacks
It depends on your weapon, not class. Most melee weapons use strength, but finesse weapons can use dexterity
Ok so my strength is plus +3 and proficiency bonus is plus 3 and im using a greatsword
so the total would be +6
yeah
all classes use the same system
And that’s added to my d20 roll
Sorry if I’m asking dumb questions
There are no dumb questions, and this would be place for it anyways 😌
i have a qusetion is there limited stats in a game like you need to devide the 20 stat point to the stats or it's unlimites
imsorry im new and i just start to be interested in dnd
When you make a character, you can choose between few ways to determine your stats (Or the DM tells you whats used)
- Standard array, where you have 6 predetermined numbers, which you just put as your stats as you like
- Rolling, where you roll your stats
- And lastly point buy, which is kind of like what you suggested where you have limited points, where you "buy" each stat with limited number of points, where higher stats get more expensive
thanks

Abilities
Six abilities provide a quick description of every creature's physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
For each ability, your character has an ability score, a number from 1 to 20. There are three ways to determine ability scores, and your DM will let you know which to use. (If you don’t have a DM yet, choose Standard Array or Point Buy.)
- Roll the Dice. Roll 4d6 and record the total of the highest three. Do this six times, and then assign each total to a different ability.
- Standard Array. Assign each of the following numbers to a different ability: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Point Buy. Choose your own ability scores by spending points.
After assigning your ability scores (and adding any bonuses from your race), determine your ability modifiers, a number from -5 to +5, using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table.

Ok
howdy guys
hello
Hey guys I'm a newbie here. Is it okay if a newbie starts off with a homebrew class immediately?
Tbh my personal motivation to start off DnD is because i wanna play a turn based RPG like the classic final fantasy but together with my friends.
PS : i know FF takes a lot of inspiration from DnD, please don't hate me guys xD
Homebrew classes arent supported by D&DBeyond, and also you should run all homebrew by your DM
Are there any other platforms besides dnd beyond that support homebrew?
Also in my place the DM isn't exactly a veteran so she doesn't know whether the homebrew class is balanced or not. I was hoping for some kind of guidance here xD
Dndbeyond does support homebrew, just not custom classes, since most every class theme is fulfilled by the existing classes and subclasses
Ohh, so in which app / platforms do people usually create custom classes on?
Well if you wanna run the homebrew by people here to figure out for balance, we've got #homebrew 👍
Not many people do, but either way you probably shouldn’t be messing with homebrew for for your first game
I’ve been playing D&D for a few years now and I’m only just now starting to work on homebrew
Can someone make a game for beginners? 🥲
You can check #looking-for-players, and you might be able to find someone hosting a game for newcomers! You could also make a #750812887697588356 post (instructions on how to do so in #find-a-game)
Honestly my problem with dnd classes is that barbarian is too primal and naked clothing, fighter is too hyper offensive, and paladin is too tanky and heavily armoured.
I was trying to homebrew a class similar to a final fantasy tactics soldier or squire. Or probably a novice class (jobless class) like in bravely default. Something that is the middle ground of all those 3 classes with light armor instead of heavy armor.
rogue?
Is this in terms of mechanics or flavor? Because you don't need to play a barbarian as a mindless primal beast, or Paladin as a tank
I only know some aspects of dnd and I am intrigued and I am willing to learn more
Too assassin like imo xD
Path of the Battlerager Barbarian wears medium armor. Battle Master Fighter are support-focused. Oath of Redemption Paladin are pacifists
In mechanics and costume
what im feeling is you just want to play an all rounder?

Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
After you read the rules and/or watch the tutorial videos, feel free to ask questions here.
you can play any class how you want, the standard way isnt the only one
Yep kind off, just like ff warrior / soldier / squire or their jobless counterpart in bravely default
I rarely find games for newcomers 🥲 i will try to make a game
im not familiar sorry
Thanks a lot too
You could also play a Dexadin, aka a Paladin that wears light or medium armor and uses finesse weapons
You don’t have to play a character like the stereotypes
Ah okay, i will try to look into it
in what way are they different to a fighter
Dnd fighters are a bit too hyper offensive?
That’s Battle Master Fighter
But their clothing for the subclasses are the same right?
No
Ohh
You can wear whatever you want. Fighters have proficiency in all types of armor iirc
I'm playing Baldur's gate 3, does that info help in any way?
Is a earth Genasi a race?
!tag new bg3
armour usually doesnt impact TOO much mechanically iirc, except for obviously stats, so im sure you can reflavour 'clothing' if youd like (correct me if im wrong)

Ohhh that's perfect!
Err... Does dexadin have other names in paladin subclasses? I couldn't find it anywhere
Dexadin isnt a subclass or anything, its just shorthand for paladin who focuses on dexterity instead of strength
Ohh
So basically light or medium armor (which give you more AC with dexterity), and a finesse weapon like scimitar or rapier (lets you use dexterity for melee attacks instead of strength)
Is there a 1h short sword in dnd?
The shortsword for one
Good rule of thumb is to search the word and add 5e at the end. Should come up first on google

Character name - Arlo Green
-
Race**: Arlo is an Earth Genasi, which grants him racial traits such as increased strength and constitution, as well as abilities like Earth Walk and Merge with Stone.
-
Class*: Arlo is a cleric devoted to the goddess Gaia, reflecting his connection to nature and his desire to protect it.
This is all I have right now still figuring out other stuff
Sounds great!
nice! nature cleric? fits well with earth genasi. btw is this chatgpt? not a bad thing just curious
Nope
The thing is i made the character
But
I can't word my things properly
😭
ahh ye chatgpt is good for that, its not a bad thing like I said. I use it a ton for DM stuff and inspiration
I was watching a dnd game session video thingy and there was a a character who was a fire Genasi and I thought it was cool So I got my idea from there to make my character a genasi
very nice. good theme and easy to build around
Arlo means hill so his name is just green hill
I watched penguinz ‘s dnd yt channel and i liked it a lot 😂🥹🌸
Thats why i wanna try it
You should wacth the legends of avantris they are pretty fun too

Hello
Hello guys, I and my wife wanna start to play a duo D&D campaign, both of us are first time playing, I took the role of DM being the one who read all the core books. In her first adventure, I want her to save a humanoid that will be her sidekick so I can balance the fights easier, I found this: A sidekick can be any kind of creature with a stat block in the Monster Manual or another D&D book, but the challenge rating must be 1/2 or lower. You take the stat block and add to it, as explained in the "Gaining a Sidekick Class" section., and want to use the Scout as a creature, he is 1/2 CR, but if I take his stat blocks he seems pretty OP, he already has 3d8 Hit Dice, 16 HP, 4 skills with more then +4, Passive perception 15, Multiattack and so on. This makes him more powerful than my wife's character, should I just Ignore everything and just take only the Ability stats and calculate the rest or how should I approach this?
me personally when I did this before, I just made a player character of equal level to the solo player (can be a level lower if you want)
bonus points if you make that character a life cleric who mostly focuses on topping up the main player
just make sure its a simple character with very few options. like just attack, and a few heal/support spells (can be other characters, just make sure it complements the main player, and try to urge the solo player to initiate solutions. for example, don't offer to pick a lock with your thieves tools on the side character, wait for the solo player to suggest the side character to use their side tools)
That's more a question for #dm-discussion as it goes a little beyond the scope of the basics
Honestly I'm kind of confused about this as well. Does this situation count as a solo campaign or duo campaign? Because technically there is only 1 player and the other is a DM
That would be considered a “duet”.
if i had a character with 16 strength what would their max carry weight be?
Max carry capacity it Strength score x 15.
16 x 15= 240
alr cool good to know

do groups on roll20 use dnd beyond? seems like the best option for me for playing onkjne
online*
Many do.
not all of them-I was in a few that didn't-you could discuss that with the DM
im making a cleric character could i just put any god or does it have to be a dnd god
It has to be a god in the setting you're playing in
Your character wouldn't pray to a deity that isn't known in the world you're in
Ask your DM about if it'll fit
this game is a whole lot of "idk it depends"
Well for some things
It's a cooperative social game lol, of course some stuff is gonna depend on who you play with
It's because your DM is the one deciding what kind of world you're playing in. If they say that their world has only one god... Then we couldn't have guessed that beforehand! That's why it's important to find a game before nailing down the much more specific parts of your character sheet
Well yes, because there's a lot of different ways to play it, so how you play depends on how you play it
so i got a question like in general are there eny limitations to what you can come upwith and does it have to be before hand or can be tough of at the moment?
How many people do you need in minimum to start a campaign?
Totally depends tbh, some people go down to 1 player 1 DM, but most commonly it's 3-6 players and 1 DM
As a introvert I don't have many friends 💀
D&D is a great way to make new friends.
The more people more fun I guess
D&D is a group collaborative game.
It depends what you mean.
If you’re talking about the limits of what you can RP with, your character’s actions and RP are determined by you, based on the personality/backstory/etc you’ve given them.
If you’re talking about the limits of character creation or abilities, there’s defined abilities and limits characters have as part of the rules (i.e. spell slots, channel divinity charges, jump rules). Player options are dependent on DM & setting, as some DM’s may not want to include certain options for various reasons (i.e. Warforged race in a non-Eberron setting)
If you’re talking about the limits of character backstory, that is dependent on your starting level, your creativity, and DM. In general it’s expected level 1 PC’s generally aren’t super badasses yet
Level 1 PCs are essentially fresh out of the academy/school/convent with zero experience (literally with 0 XP).
So the dm makes the decision how strong you character will be?
Your ability scores and starting class level does.
the more i read it the more out of this world it seems but i do get your point
The point of D&D is to grow your character, both in character/class levels and as a character (aka character development).
There's no fun if your PC is super powerful from the get go and has no growth in any way.
No one likes mary sues
The DM and players all agree on what kind of stuff is allowed to occur in the campaign, which can technically limit capabilites but not really
nvm
I always thought dm's only narrate stuff 🤓
Technically yes, in reality no. In terms of raw mechanics, your class, subclass, level, abilities, and items determine how strong you will be. The only reason I say technically is that the DM generally sets out the level range for their campaign and adjudicates item distribution.
It's very table-dependent.
DMs present situations to the players to act/react to and in response the DM act/reacts to that. DMs and players are co-storytellers.
Ooo
Collaborative storytelling RPG game where DM and players work together to have a fun adventure together
If I (the DM) decide that the player characters start at level 1, I'm not going to have them face off an ancient red dragon but rather something more reasonable for their power level, such as giant rats in the local tavern's cellar. As the PCs grow in power they'll go further into the world (and beyond) and face tougher challenges.
All the videos I have seen of people playing dnd it looks supper fun
It is.
It is super fun!
But keep in mind that you (the player) are not the Main Character but one of three to six players at the table. Work with your fellow players during the game.
sounds fun

well alot of dnd is about reading, so i'd suggest reading the stuff so you can understand the game
Gotta have a good/decent comprehension of the basics to play it
i mean, if you didnt read about your character, it'd be a bit hard to know what they can or cant do for example
Effort spent learning the core game rules and mechanics will likely increase your chances of finding and playing in a game of D&D.
Take your time and don’t feel like you have to memorize it all but becoming familiar with the game rules will make you a better player that folks will find easier to add to their D&D games.
Because time spent explaining the game during a game session is less time actually spent playing it. It’s forcing the rest of the table to become teachers.
Most folks are fine helping you out as you play but it’s much easier when you’ve spent effort to learn what you can.
Learning the game is just like playing:
Collaborative

Hi I have a question, when creating a character sheet, attacks and spellcasting which weapons do you insert into the table? Because the downloaded pdf has 3 slots so I can equip 3 weapons? And if I have ie. Breath Weapon where would it go? Its all pretty overwhelming
i'd suggest using dndbeyond, since alot of it is automated for you and you only have to choose a few options
it is automated but some options are behind a paywall
well alot of dnd is paid for
Just like the official D&D books…
you still get the basics for free
You can always use it to make the basic stuff then print out a sheet and fill in from there
sorry if the suggestion aint good for you, but dndbeyond is extremely easy to work with
it is always help
The point of the character sheet is to provide you with easy access to the information you need to play your character. There are suggested ways to use it, but it’s not governed by the rules. Think of it more like your personal notes page. The slots for attacks and spells on the front page there is just somewhere you can put the things you use the most frequently so you don’t have to hunt them down elsewhere on the sheet. You can put whatever you want there. Your main weapon, your favorite spell, your breath weapon, etc.
that is true
Thank you so much
I have a question that the DM Guide didn't really help me with (that or im just blind), but i was wondering how one tracks 'in-game' time. I'm a first time DM and just wanting to get the gist of some things
Its up to you, and its whatever fits the situation
That area is totally DM choice
the main things with set times are short rest (1 hr) and long rest (8 hrs, once per day)
As DM you can handwave time to move ahead minutes, hours, days, or weesk (the latter usually for long travel).
I use Foundry VTT which has a clock and calendar so I can adjust it to show my players who much time/days have passed.
alright, thank you!
So I have some good ideas for campaigns but I don’t know where to start can anyone help me?
#dm-discussion is a great place to bounce DM campaign ideas around with other DMs.
A prewritten adventure is the best place to start
If can at least be a foundation to use by simply flavoring things to fit your concept
Building from scratch is an uphill battle
Hello I don't want to interrupt any ongoing conversations, just wanted to know what websites to use to host a online campaigns.
Roll20, Owlbear Rodeo are two good ones
Hi. I’m wondering how integrated a game is with dndbeyond if I buy an adventure there. We used the character builder already. Would the game still be offline and we just manually enter xp for our characters? Or is it automated through the website if we each brought a phone or tablet?
There are multiple options. D&D Beyond is beginning to build in a virtual tabletop for high-end subscribers. Roll20 is free; Owlbear Rodeo is also free. Roll20 seems to have more bells & whistles but also a steeper learning curve. I also know of Foundry, but don't know how it compares.
Foundry is more feature-ful than Roll20, requires a one off purchase, and probably has a higher learning curve
Another viewpoint: don't make a campaign to begin with. Try something smaller. It doesn't have to be a one-shot exactly, but something short can build up your DM skills and help you learn your player's preferences. Then you can apply that knowledge to making a campaign.
Plenty of small adventures on DM's Guild for a few dollars if you want something pre-written
Or if I use a separate vtt is it more automated but I have to either buy the content there or recreate it there?
Yeah, there might be some third party unsupported widgets that can do the transfer, but generally if you buy an adventure in one, it won't transfer to the others
Different VTTs have different functionality. Some handle character sheets, monster stats, etc. Others are strictly for maps and tokens. It's not uncommon to make D&D work by using multiple tools to handle the parts of the game rather than a single one (though that's also a viable approach).
And if I buy from dndbeyond I’d still have to recreate stuff if I wanted it integrated there?
It depends on the VTT. Some don't even offer you the option.
Ok. Thanks.
hey. i am new to d&d. i might be bad at English but here we go: I’m really, really bad at learning and i am saving some money to buy the manual (it’s a little expensive at Brazil, but that’s ok) does anyone has some tips to begin understand it? like the systems of points and things like that. I do have RPG experience (I played the “Ordem Paranormal” RPG) that was easier, but even that was not completely ok with me…

Don't apologize. The the point of this channel is to help new people out to the game.
Stupid question but for casters, do the enemies need to be outside the casting range for an opportunity attack?
Could you clarify you question?
By default, you can only make opportunity attacks with weapons
When I’m casting a spell, would the opponent need to be 150 ft away for me to get an opportunity attack?
So the casting range is irrelevant
I’m going to be using war caster
Opp attacks still trigger off your normal reach.
Oh alright
If you are trying to use warcaster you'd choose a single target spell that only effects one target. Once they leave your normal reach 5 or 10 ft (depending) does it trigger
Also, should I take Alert or Fey Touched (Gift Of Alacrity)? I want to know which is better for general use
It's not like firebolt when the maximum effective range is (whatever firebolt is like 90 120?)
Depends on the type of game your playing. If you are playing a support caster then fey touched if you are playing a ranger or rogue I'd say alert. Alert has more general uses imo
Yeah, if you get surprised a lot/want to go first, Alert would be better
how do hit points work? i played the demo which pointed out me having 7/11 hit points but i don’t really understand how those numbers are calculated and how they’re used
Have you read this part of the rules? https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#HitPointsandHitDice

Having read through the Basic Rules once is a very healthy thing to do. You dont need to memorise everything, but having followed the rules at least once to make a character, and knowing the general location of where to look for rules is a great thing to bring to a table as a newby
What is ability score?

How do I find a game?
?tag new dice
Dice
Players roll dice to resolve whether their attacks hit or miss or whether their adventurers can scale a cliff, roll away from the strike of a magical lightning bolt, or pull off some other dangerous task. Anything is possible, but the dice make some outcomes more probable than others.
The different dice are referred to by the letter d followed by the number of sides: d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, and d20. For instance, a d6 is a six-sided die (the typical cube that many games use).
When you need to roll dice, the rules tell you how many dice to roll of a certain type, as well as what modifiers to add. For example, 3d8 + 5 means you roll three eight-sided dice, add them together, and add 5 to the total. (An expression like 18 (3d8 + 5) simply means that 18 is the average of rolling 3d8 + 5.)
?tag new d20
The d20
In cases where the outcome of an action is uncertain, the game relies on rolls of a 20-sided die, a d20, to determine success or failure. Ability checks, attack rolls, and saving throws are the three main kinds of d20 rolls, forming the core of the rules of the game. All three follow these simple steps.
If you make a d20 roll with advantage, roll two d20s and use the better result. Disadvantage is the opposite: roll two d20s and take the worse result instead.
You'll use a d20 the most -- any time the game wants to determine whether your actions succeed or fail.
The rest are primarily used for damage, and whatever is dealing that damage will say what to use.
ok thank you very much
#find-a-game can point you in the right direction!
Does anyone here always play in roll20 for online dnd?
I do
I do as well
We need a fighter or cleric, down to help teach (10am Sundays)
Which timezone?
Soliciting or organizing games in the discussion channels is against the server rules. Instead, read #find-a-game for instructions on using the Looking for Game/Group section of the server.

Guys any website I can use to make characters manually? Like make a full character sheet manually except digitally instead of a paper sheet
D&D Beyond lets you export your character sheet as a PDF.
I basically want a blank digital character sheet PDF
Or you can use a fillable character sheet PDF.
https://dnd.wizards.com/resources/character-sheets
Oh, thank you!
question for everyone, what site would you say is the best for character creation. I know DnD Beyond is great but you miss alot of character creation content without purchasing some of the material. so is it worth buying the additional books or ae there better sites for character creation?
D&D Beyond is the best option because you don't need to buy all the books but rather you can buy individual playalbe races and classes for $2 each.
yea some of the guys in the other channel helped me figure that out lool i don't know how i never saw that before....

There are some helpful things for ya!
Hi all, wondering why DND has a resistance mechanic but not a weakness one? Playing a humans[me] vs devil campaign and see that devils have damage resistances and damage/condition immunities?! but no weakness? The game must have purposefully not done a weakness mechanic, Im wondering why tho
It does, they're called Vulnerabilities:https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#DamageResistanceandVulnerability
For example, a skeleton is vulnerable to Bludgeoning damage.
If a creature or an object has vulnerability to a damage type, damage of that type is doubled against it.
Funny thing to add onto the previous message.
Very few monsters have damage vulnerabilities.
You shouldn't be studying which monsters have which resistances, immunities, and/or vulnerabilities because that's considered meta-knowledge and a lot DMs would consider that "cheating."
Is this the appropriate channel to ask for advice for running my first campaign (DoSI) to mostly new players as a new player?
Almost, you'd actually want to ask questions in #dm-discussion!
We have secrets deep in the vault which we don't want players' eyes to see. :3c
You can also check out #1029833015423143957 for anything specific regarding DoSI.
Hey I just downloaded d&d beyond and really wanna play anybody active rn?

No I’m playing on my phone
Dang it
Check the helpful links above and #learn-to-play
D&D is not a video game. You don’t click a button to start a game or join a queue or anything like that. It’s a game that you play in the imagination, by talking to other people. You “start” by finding a group of people to play with, finding a way to communicate with each other (usually discord if playing online) and then just start talking
If you need help looking for a group of people to play with, #find-a-game has instruction and advice for doing so

Hello and welcome! If you need some help starting and you're new to DnD, check out the post above your! It's got a link to the basic rules, as well as some helpful links like the Introductory demo or the Handbooker Helper videos for some more hands-on information. We're here if you have any specific questions as you go through the rules!
#learn-to-play may also be worth checking out!
Oh, this is a fun new channel! Thanks for bringing it up!
Me and all my friends have never played DnD and I want to do a campaign so bad. Would it be foolish for me to DM my first campaign even if I've never played?
It's not foolish at all! Plenty of folks (myself included) started DnD as their table's DM! Sure it requires a little more reading and some good prep work, but that's the fun of it!
It seems intimidating but I think I'm the only one willing to step up to the plate lol
If you want to wear the DM mantle head on over to #dm-discussion and we can give you DMing advice there.
All great DMs were newbies at one point. Don't dwell on the lack of experience. You're playing with friends and they should appreciate you volunteering to be the DM.
Very true :) I appreciate the words of wisdom
When I get around to it you'll see me in #dm-discussion
Im in the same boat, kinda! My friend group wanted to play and everyone looked at me to DM, even though ive only played like 1,5 campaigns
I think u should go for it!!!
i made a character sheet and im kinda nervous to search for a group
i have never played with strangers and on one hand id think it would be super fun, on the other hand it would be kind of scary, i get it.
Finding a good table to play at is a lot like dating -- there's going to be ghosting, no responses, drama, etc. before you find the one. You have to keep looking because it may take you days to months.
thank you for the wisdom
Remember that D&D is a social game so you're dealing with other people and see if you can mesh with them.
It’s scary the first time you meet a new table every time, but it gets a little easier each time. And everyone at the table is scared for the same reason. You’re all people.
yeah, i guess thats true
hello
I'm new to d&d

#find-a-game Hello, a best friend of mine recommended me this, I made a character. Can someone guide me what's next?
Ello, I'm a new dm looking for people to learn from and get suggestions for campaigns and second thoughts/opinions on homebrew stuff
oh ok
fyi, #find-a-game is just a channel link
Have you read the basic rules?
We don't run games on this server
Where can I find games?
ok
there's a few options, but if you want to go through this server, the #find-a-game channel details how
A few options like what?
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1fqCm4tA5Y_WxlqgryUM_iaz3l7B3zZ0m/view this guide by iamrazorwing explains some more options
I just explained some options....
I wouldn't recommend randomly going around asking people if they want to join a game with you
but we do have options here for finding games
and yes, we don't actually run any games on this server
ok
Okay folks - do not use the standard discussion channels to solicit or organize games. Please read #find-a-game carefully as it has important information on how to find games and has instructions on how to use the bot commands to create posts in the #looking-for game channels.
How many skills am I able to have at level 1?
depends on your class, race and background. each gives a number of skills or skill choices
I'm new here, can I create my DND character however I want it?
Warlock,Half - orc, charlatan background (please tell me if this is a bad build)
As long as it fits within the rules
I didn't read the rules just now, can you explain it to me?
It's better you go to dnd beyond they have a more simple explanation
Ok thank you

I’m not a beginner but I have a friend wanting to get into dnd and I’ve told them lotsa stuff about it, told them about the players handbook, and they’ll be getting that but also I’m sure it’d be helpful for them if there was a big YouTube video/series of videos explaining a lot of the rules of dnd, so if anyone knows something like that please share!!

Hey i am new
Question on DnD rules
When they change the version, does a DM have to read all of the books again?
Or is there a short summary of the rule changes?
HAving to read hundreds of pages would be a large task.
The changes are rather miniscule in how the game is run overall. But the main discussion of the revised rules is happening in #1063492306927374426 if you want more opinions on the revised rules.
Are there any good videos on how to start as a new DM, what do, etc.
I'm new as a DM and want to look over other campaigns for inspiration. Other than the free lost mine of phandelver is there anywhere I can find some campaigns?
I think there are a few more free options on D&D Beyond. You can also search the free and pay what you want option on the DMsGuild website

Thank-you
I got the starter kit but honestly as a long time player the kit is a bit basic and I just want to play the full version.
I had played 15 years with a friend who was the DM so really didn't learn many of the rules well.
Thanks for the videos. They should help a lot.
I don't really know that much about medieval lore or creatures though so not sure if this game is right for me.
You really don't have to know anything about medieval history to play D&D
That's what is wonderful about D&D. You don't need to know about medieval lore. Honestly, the less you know the better the surprises.
When it comes to lore and creatures, that is. Basic rules and such you should probably become acquainted with.
Thank-you so much
I had felt overwhelmed because of all the books I saw. I am a slow reader and learn and thought it would be difficulty for me to read it all
On top of learning a new version when they increase the version of the game.
I had played for 15 years with a friend who moved away so he can't play as much and I don't have any friends in the area and my wife is hesitant about inviting randoms over to the house because we have two kids.
Check out the DM Lair on YouTube. Luke has a ton of great videos.
So right now I just want to learn to be a DM and run games online.
I do miss the pencil and paper maps and not sure how to get started setting up a virtual table top for online games.
I was disappointed with the little I saw of Dungeon scrawl so not sure where to start with virtual table tops and setting up maps and character sheets for online games.
For now I am just running DoSI with my wife with the starter kit I got.
It is still fun but I misssed rolling the character sheets.
I would like to find some better map creation software.
Matt Colville's "Running the Game" is my personal favorite resource for DM advice, but plenty more are out there on YouTube.
Checkout Dyson maps. Lots of great options.
The pins in #dnd-maps are a good place to start. And #dm-discussion can give even more assistance on the topic of DMing.
Thank-you so much all for your encouragement.
The game is still a bit daunting to learn.
Like I said I played 15 years but my friend applied most of the rules.
You don't have to learn all the rules to start playing!
Well have a good night all. I am sure I will be back with hundreds of more questions.
It is getting late here and I should get some sleep
no worries, we're glad to have you
I built a character tonight. On a website called Roll20. Its like a baby.
No background, no guild. Don’t know it’s personality yet.
😮
All I have of the character is it’s race, class and 80 gold coin in its pockets. lol. Then I got blocked from an online game cause I accidentally joined without paying.
ah, there are non paid games offered here
I figured. The guy on roll20 said he had 40 years experience in D&D so I wanted to ask questions. Thought he might be encouraging.
He wasn’t
sad
it happens unfortunately
but wellkome to you and your baybe
this!!
i hope you find a nice campagne that fits your character soon
I simply roll with whatever happens when I make characters
I let events shape their personality
Thank you!
I might use some AI for creating my character’s physical appearance. Is that encouraged?
varies from table to table
I personally have no love for AI but I have no real hatred for it either. Do what you wish for that stuff
That is what I want to do. There’s a dnd store near me. That sells those small paintable dnd figurines. I might go there and get some dice.
the first of many lol
Very true. As a kid I collected dice from our family board games and kept them in a velvet bag. 27 of them. And then- I lost them. Oops. But I do love how pretty the dice are for DnD.
whereeeee can i find a one shot group, i seem to have missed the channel or im blind

real tbh

Oh?
maybe im doing it wrong

I am watching Smosh play DnD. I’ve heard of other YouTubers playing as well. And watched some table etiquette videos.

I’m not understanding. I think I’m just tired and I’m gonna sleep on this. I went to the find a game channel but I can’t discuss anything there. Then went to the looking for players channel. There’s only a post from a month ago about a game there that has expired. I might just need sleep.
oh?
interesting
they all link fine to me
Yeah it’s quite confusing. I click on the find a game. Then I click looking for players. And then it said go to (outside discussing D&D) I might just be tired. I will try again tomorrow it’s is 1:30 am. I think it’s me. It’s okay
Read the instructions carefully in #find-a-game

GN
Right. I’ve done this several times now. I don’t understand the direction and have to read them several times to understand. I frustrate myself. Embarrassed.
can you use your own dice in roll20 games or is that frowned upon?
It’s also probably why the guy on roll20 blocked me from his campaign.
it varies from table to table, but I think they'd prefer it on R20 generally
:[ but i have such cool dice
I mean ask
i mean i'd like to think you can bc of gameplay fun but i can see people lying all the time about their rolls lol
Hey everyone! I’m very much new to DnD as I’ve only played BG3 and the Campaign from the Starter Set. I’d love to find a group or campaign I can join to play online. I did find the #find-a-game channel but I am kind of scared to ask a DM to play in a campaign because I’ve got so little experience. I don’t want to be a nuisance for the other players. I’ve made a post there myself looking for a game but that isn’t working too well either. What should I do?
Your fears are unfounded. You have plenty of experience with the Starter Set Campaign and you’ll have a generally good understanding of your action economy thanks to BG.
Honestly, games are hard to find, because the demand for DMs is insanely high.
Generally, a half-decent DM will always have a table, but not every player will have a DM.
I get that, could have figured that out myself. Alright, so I’ll just keep looking and wait patiently. Thank you very much for your kind words, that really helped me as I was insecure about all that!
Also looking for a game can take a while alas. Being proactive and messaging DMs about any game you're interested in, especially if you show you have read and understood their post, is one of the best ways to get into a game rather than waiting for DMs to come to you.
You can also look into Adventure League, which is organised play, and look out for Westmarches (community servers with lots of DMs and Players) and Oneshots. These tend to be lower commitment games that you can join and if they don't work out for you, leave- but hopefully after meeting some people you do get along with and stay in contact with. Sometimes the best online groups are formed from slowly networking and putting together a team from other games you've played in.
Thank you for your those ideas, will definitely look into those!
hi I'm new to dnd and dont really know how to play but i want totry something new but im a little scared because dont know what to do and i also dont have mic one of my friends told me to play dis but they are to busy to help me with anything
are any gods in dnd ?
Yeah, honestly the game rules are a bit confusing at first because they are taught well.
yea agree
Worst of it is the Dungeon Master Guide
Excessively long book that doesn't really teach how to DM.
wont know havent had one yet because struggling to get a party
There is just a lot of stuff about different governments, etc that one can imagine on their own as I thought that was supposed to be the point of DnD.
But I am attached to DnD since my friend introduced me to the game and I played for 15 years so I am just struggling to learn how to get started.
Fortunately the free basic rules online are great.
Ironically, the free stuff is the best stuff for DnD.
There is some good info in the Dungeon Master Guide but it does a poor job at describing how to DM. A lot of the info is in there but scattered throughout the book.
thats cool me and my friends were planning to play and one of the would have teached me but everyone dropped out because of personal reasons and thanks thats good to know
Also the people on this site are very friendly and helpful.
A great group of people. And like I said the best learning resources are free. I would even caution against the books as most of the DMs I speak to say they rarely use the Dungeon Guide.
thanks i actually talk alot but im not good with online stuff and also a shy person ok thanks
Hello

I'm new to dnd, always wanted to play, but am unable to cuz dnd ain't popular in my country

Hello
Heya!
I am familiar with the 2nd edition rules from a long time ago and am familiarizing myself with the 5e rules. I am interested in joining a campaign for newcomers and just need to know what class is needed. I will need about 30 minutes to create a character and can be ready to play. I am unfamiliar with Discord, so please show patience with me.

Adventure = a tv miniseries
Campaign = a multi-season tv series
Yeah, I have a lot to figure out before I get into anything, I don't even have a character lol. I have the Dnd beyond app and a character made but I don't feel like that its done correctly.

starting my first dnd campaigns session 0 in a little under a week. Just wondering, is there any like, etiquette stuff or common mistakes noobies make that i should know about?
hello should i have a character sheet before playing dnd?
Just standard social play stuff; be respectful, try not to hog the spotlight, etc
is there a place to play for new players
I can't seem to find what wizard skills are online, only spells, can someone help me? Making a character is a bit confusing x)
use dnd beyond
yeah that's what I'm making it on
Helloo
hello
It's important to communicate and set expectations.
While this doesn't cover everything, there are key things a group should ask to set themselves up for success.
Session 0 questions to ask.
- What kind of campaign does everyone want to play?
- Linear (The storyline usually follows a cause-and-effect relationship, where each event directly leads to the next.)
- Non-Linear (The storyline that has story events can done in any order. Think Legend of Zelda games)
- Sandbox (The storyline has no pre-determined events and no overarching plot.)
- How much role-play, exploration, and combat do you want in the campaign?
- 1 social, 1 combat, 1 dungeon encounter per session?
- Perhaps 1-3 social, 1-2 combat, 0-1 dungeon counters per session?
- What is the desired level difficult?
- Easy, medium, hard, deadly?
- How easily and often can characters be resurrected?
- How much of a time commitment does everyone want to invest in the campaign?
- Have the campaign be 3 session? 5-8 session? 12 sessions? 12+ sessions?
- Should each sessions be 2 hours, 4 hours, 6 hours, 8 hours? 2-4 hours?
- Would each session be weekly, bi-weekly, monthly?
- What lines and veils need to be established?
- Lines are hard limits on themes, topics, actions someone doesn't want to engage in.
- Veils are soft limits where themes, topics, actions can be explored but not in great detail.
- Are everyone's preferences and expectations compatible?
- Do all players want to play the same type of campaign?
- Is the the type of game players want to participate in, the type of game the DM wants to run?
To play D&D as a player you need a character sheet yes. It may be helpful to make a basic character before the game to solidify an idea of what you want to play, minus the stats as the DM will generally tell you which stat generation method to use.
Many tables use a “session 0,” which is mainly used for setting tone, expectations, lines/veils, etc. But it is also frequently used for a new group to make their characters together.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/wizard
Right under the class table, it lists your proficiencies including the starting skill proficiencies you can get specifically from the wizard class
Thanks!
If you want to look at the character creator specifically it should be under section 2 (class), where you’ll find the Proficiencies section under the Class Features header

Welcome to the hobby!
Glad to be here

Tho i have a question
im confused as hell on how that thing works
sure, what is it? 🙂
Can u play online on phone
so ill just be here if anyone
Yo I'm pretty new to dnd if any one would be interested in helping me please dm me
if you are looking for a game you can go to #looking-for-players
Are you a player or DM?
player
Have you ever played dnd and feel like your character isn't making any impact nor interesting decisions at all outside of combat, and instead messing up with the party's plans and stuff?
There are ways to do so, yes, although it may not be ideal
Then either go to #750812887697588356 and create a post, or go to #looking-for-players and check dms, that try to find players
Ah dam ill try
talk with your table, communication is the whole game. Ask your DM (and table) how to make the game fun for everyone
Nothing is impossible
i just want somone making a game for new people, everything is confusing
Can anyone teach me how to play
I sent a dm 😄
This is a circumstance which needs a conversation with your party and DM
Maybe you need to look around your sheet, maybe the party needs to work together

Have read the materials in that botpost
5e can be played on your phone yes. Discord with a dice-bot + a D&DBeyond character sheet does most of the heavy lifting.
From there the only issue is the style of game you’d prefer. If you want to play with a virtual table-top like roll20 it’d be a little difficult to play it on a phone due to screen size and mobile finicky-ness (I already have a hard time on my iPad). If you want to play in more of an asynchronous, text-only style a play-by-post game requires basically no other tools other than the ones I mentioned above. The combo above also works if you think you’d like theater-of-the-mind style games as well (I.e. no battle-map, but the area is described by the DM)
?tag new online
Thanks really helpful ☺️
creating a character on roll20 on the abilities section im not sure what to do
I've just made a character and I need someone to review it and provide feedback and possibly teach me how to play in the meantime
what is most often the time the point allocation value for abilities?
I would recommend doing it in D&DBeyond. It’s generally much more intuitive than roll20’s character creator
Your stat spread will depend on your stat generation method, the class that you’re playing, and optionally the RP you want to play into (since stats don’t have to strictly represent your RP)
ahh ok ty
Could anyone help me to learn how to play if you can DM me
Your DM will generally tell you which stat generation method to use. If you’re just making concepts for now I’d recommend standard array or point buy
You can get character feedback in #character-discussion
Okay thanks
point buy?
Free basic rules are available in this channels pins. Part 1 covers character creation but I’d at least skim until the end of Part 3 to get a good understanding of the rules
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#3DetermineAbilityScores
Under the section “variant: customizing ability scores” you can find the rules for point buy
Essentially you start with a spread of 8/8/8/8/8/8, and have a pool of 27 points that you can spend to increase individual scores as you see fit. For example, increasing one of those 8’s to a 15 costs 9 points
would there be anyone who would like to call and help me with a character creation? i'm kinda lost
Hello! I am new to D&D, and I'll have to be the dungeon master for my first game. Though I have some questions about combat. First of all, how do I give the players XP? If they fight a horde of monsters, how much XP does each player get?
And regarding combat, do I roll initiative for every monster, even if they are the same kind? Do I do the same for damage, and do I move each monster individually?

short answer: however you want. my friend who's a dm let me have a sneak peak and made every enemy roll for initiative, but depending on the enemy theirs is either reduced a bit or yours is higher (i'm not sure what it's scalled off of). the xp he also made up, at the end he said something like "you earned a total of 1880 xp, each of you gets 470 xp". you could also scale the xp off the leveling requirement that is found online. i am a new player who only had a sneak peak, so this is could not be too accurate.
Hey folks! Welcome to the server and welcome to D&D!
Many of us don't have time and bandwidth to teach you D&D one on one so we ask that you spend some time reviewing the resources in #learn-to-play and read the pinned messages here in this channel (including the free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules). Feel free to ask specific questions here or in an appropriate channel (see #channel-guide to see the many channels we have for specific D&D topics).
I recommend heading over to #dm-discussion for DMing advice
When making a character is it better to make a custom background or not? Do most regular games allow them?
That is very table/DM dependent - check with your play group and DM.
If you don't have a group/DM, I wouldn't worry about getting the specifics of your character right as much as knowing how to make one. You'll have to follow the DM's character-creation guidelines anyway, but knowing the process of making a character will make tweaking easier since you know the baseline.
I currently am making one on the dnd beyond site, there are alot of options and so much stuff seems optional that I don't know what to pick or not to, but I'm managing, might have this done in an hour x)
The process as laid out in the rules may be a useful reference: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters
D&D Beyond automates some things for you and presents you with more buttons to turn on/off than the Basic Rules assume.
Thanks
what is a module
A pre-written adventure.
It could be book-length encompassing multiple levels of play, it could be for a single session, or it could be something in between.
Would any group be able to take me in and teach me? I'm very green. I have looked in in the looking for player but can't really find a group that would be willing
As mentioned previously [here](#dnd-newcomers message) we don't have time/bandwidth to teach people one on one. The best thing to do is to look at the pinned messages here in the channel and review #learn-to-play to learn more about D&D, the core game rules and mechanics, and then if you have any specific questions ask here or in an appropriate channel (see #channel-guide).
hi mate yeah already done this i more ment if i could sit in a watch a group play

Heeeey I was starting off on this game and so far its been fun however I wanted to try out makign a homebrew race for the first time if you wanna help
oh sorry
I don't recommend you homebrewing when you're new to the game. You don't know the rules well enough to know what's balanced or not.
Also, DMs may not let you create your hint homebrew race that may not fit with their setting
Hey uh, can lizardfolk be like leopard geckos?
Flavor is free, but it’s usually best to check with your DM.

Is it a bad idea to try to DM with literally zero experience of playing as a player or DM? I am vaguely familiar with how things work from watching/listening to tabletop roleplay podcasts and stuff. I would also obviously be willing to look into stuff but generally speaking is it a bad idea to try DMing with such little experience cause I’m normally a jump in and figure it out type of person and with other stuff I would just do that but with DMing I feel like if I fail I’m failing others. Also like what would be the best things to look into learning early for a foundation to build on as a DM?
I honestly don’t know if I like the idea of being a player or a dm more both seem fun in different ways
It's not a bad idea.
Though there are some things you should do to set yourself up for success.
Being a player first lets you get the feel of the game and learn on the DM's dime.
If you want to be a DM then head on over to #dm-discussion for DMing advice.
Biggest recommendation would be to run an adventure that is meant to be completed in a single session, also known as a one shot.
For first timers, running a pre-written adventure is best.
Ok, thanks for the advice

Hello everyone! I'm fairly new to dnd I've never played a game of actual dnd and I'd like to start I also have a friend and she's keen to start. I've played bg3 multiple times and I've watched a small amount of critical role but that's about all the experience I have. Is there any dnd groups starting or that has room for my friend and I? Thanks for reading!
#750812887697588356 and #looking-for-players are good places to look for games!
Thankyou!
So for a campaign, I am wondering if someone can explain how the profane soul works for blood hunter
Hey I have been in this server for about 2 years now, I've been wanting to play D&D for a while but I never found the time to. I just finished my Uni course so now I have plenty of time on my hands so I simply want to ask before I start the demos, is there anything I should keep in mind with playing the game e.g. requirements, timing, etc?
If you join a game, you should probably ask the DM those questions
If you want to join a game look at #750812887697588356 or #looking-for-players
hi, wanted to get into DND with some friends (6 of us) and we are wondering what do we need to buy to start, if anything; we will play in person and I will most likely write our own adventures. thanks for any tips!
Basic rules is usually good enough
But the Players Handbook, Dungeon Master’s Guide, and Monster Manual is also really helpful too
Basic rules is free on DndBeyond.com
The Dungeon Master’s Guide has a lot of stuff for running the game or making adventures, dungeons, etc
Players Handbook is a lot of the base rules of how to play the game and character creation
And the Monster Manuel has a lot of monster stats and how to use stat blocks and monster lore
Basic Rules has a little bit of all of these
are you able to buy a physical copy of the basic rules, or it is printing/online only ?
otherwise, thank you for the advice!
I think it’s online but Walmarts usually have a Starter Set with a few premade character sheets, a short adventure, and the Basic Rules for around $20
But that might vary from store to store
The basic rules are found in the various starter set boxed sets
You can't get it physically on it's own
Online the basic rules is free at least
what would you say about the essentials kit or the wrath of Ashardalon, found the second set on the second hand market for 50% down
Those are two completely different things
Wrath of Ashardalon is a board game based on a previous edition of D&D
oh
The essentials kit is a solid starter boxed set
Yeah the Essentials kit might help
it has the rules, right?
It should
alright, thank you for the help, both of ya
Hey if anyone would be open to helping a newcomer please DM me
Or you can just ask your specific questions and folks can learn together
I don't have time/bandwidth to do private messages one-on-one teaching
Oh sk thx for the tip
I do recommend going through the free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
Watch some D&D streams/liveplay to see how folks play the game (keeping in mind that most streamed games are for entertainment first, not teaching folks)
Then try your hand at making a character sheet (again refere to the free basic rules - first chapter goes through step by step process of creating a character).
Also there are some very useful links and resources in the pinned messages on this channel.
Hello! I’m a very..very new dm and haven’t played the game at all. My friends and I decided to start an adventure on Tuesday! I’ve been reading through the rule book I got with the essential kit- I just have some questions but this one is really want to know! When playing should we usually talk a lot? I’ve seen videos where they have like full blown convos!
There are no fixed rules when you should talk. You the DM control all of the NPCs and monsters so you act/react to what the players say and do. This is improv.
If your players don't want to talk to the NPCs then there's not much you can do. However, if they want to every single NPC they encounter then you should be prepared to improv those NPCs (their names, their personalities, their backgrounds, what they would say, etc.)
Anyway, if you want more DMing advice head on over to #dm-discussion
If I understand your question, you're asking about speaking in-character, literally acting out what the characters are saying?
When playing, you can have a mixture of speaking in-character when you are comfortable doing so:
The tavernmaster hands you your drink. "Planning on heading out on the road soon, outlander? Best be careful- dragon's been seen flyin' o'er the mountains this past tenday."
and just describing in the third person what a character says:
The tavernmaster hands you your drink. He asks if you plan to head out soon and warns you that a dragon was sighted flying over the nearby mountains recently.
The latter works well for players and DMs who aren't as comfortable acting out their character's dialogue, or simply can't come up with the exact words to say in the moment. You can switch between those modes and have some players use one and others use the other.
Oh thank you!! That helps a bunch!!

i have volo's guide to monsters and mordenkainen's tome of foes, is there any reason to get mordenkainen's monsters of the multiverse?
This isn't the space for that question, and you really ought to avoid spamming the same one across multiple channels.
i didn't get an answer from either of the two channels
You got an answer here, though: #dnd-rules message
Hi, never played before. Is there a furry species?
across all the supplements, there's several
supplements?
books that aren't the core 3
There are anthropomorphic races, yes
Shifter, Leonin, and Tabaxi come to mind
so content that exists in the game but is an opt-in purchase outside of the core content
ooh, so its basically DLCs ? i get it
You can see all the available races here
https://www.dndbeyond.com/races
Yeah you can think of it as such
But yeah, pay for anything not in the Players Handbook
Tabaxi
ok so i saw the first link, its like a intro and i like it, do i gotta read every single rule?
its a long list o.o , ill read it
Yeah reading the rules is important, although you don’t have to read it entirely. You can skip a few chapters. You mainly want the chapters on character creation and playing the game
think of it like a school textbook. reading it cover-to-cover could be helpful, yeah! but there's a lot that you could learn through other methods. video tutorials, hands-on activity, etc
thank u guys,. so i guess i cant play tabaxi for now? i can make character of a human, since i know how to be a human lol
im just reading the rules and im nervous lol
Tabaxi would either need you to purchase the entire relevant sourcebook, or just the race. Just the race on it’s own is 2 dollars
okay, but like. Its for my character only right? there will be X species other than the core ones? Or it depends on the DM? sorry, im a complete noob
like for example, all of these races are in the same universe? same planet?
really depends on the DM you play with. DnD is very encouraging of people to play around with the lore when you need to
actually, that makes things easier for me
my brain is fried when i start to think too much
In 99% of games any race from the Players Handbook will be permitted at any table you will ever play at
The races in Volo's Guide and Mordenkainen's MotM will most often be allowed as well
It's races from sources such as Ravnica, Eberron, Spelljammer, and Theros that are very hit and miss, as most of those races have lore unique to the worlds they originate from, and may not make sense to exist in others
actually i convinced myself to play human since im noob and trash, they are free, right?
idk do i even gotta pay for dnd? im confused
Yeah the Human is in the Basic Rules, which are free
omg
I can't recommend enough sticking with the free stuff for your first go at it, don't go spending $40+ on a hobby you aren't 100% about yet 😅
is there a mix of bowman and thief? mr pracosmic
You could play a Rogue that uses a shortbow for sure
Then at level 3 pick up the Thief subclass
rangers are very good at utilizing ranged weapons and have very skirmishy abilities
omg ty
thank u. !!
Roda Blackrat , is it a weird name?
character questions are prob better for #character-discussion
No that's fine!!
Depends on your metric lmao, for a fantasy character thats about on par
okii ty
"Sources
Allow or restrict sources to be used for this character."
theres checkmarks on things i dont know... im sorry im just too new to understand. sorry for the questions
i uncheck everything, homebrew, magic, dragonlance, planescape
i dont knkw what those are
For now, you can toggle all those sliders off (to the left)
They are referring to sources you wont have access to unless you were to purchase them, so having them visible during your character creation is unnecessary
okay, also the ignore coin weight is enable automatically. Do most games ignore coin weight?
i can probably change these setting when joining a game anyways?
In my experience, yeah I'd say most DMs ignore coin weight
oki
Yeah you can easily toggle them later
thank u friend, rn im roda blackrat, human and can talk common and dwarvish
this is so fun
helloooo
I know there's a find a game tab but a lot of the recent ones wouldn't work with my time scheduling, so should I probably just wait till one comes up that does, or is there by chance a dm around here that's looking for someone to pop in :>
juuust thought id ask
also i mean technically im new to dnd itself but i've fully gone through baldurs gate 3 and done a one shot before "still unexperienced though i would say"
Well, you can make your own post in #750812887697588356 if there is a DM looking for a player to add
Or you can look older posts in looking-for-players, as sometimes (often) players do drop out
got it, thank you sm <3
On hability scores
theres 3 method to do it, doesn't matter which one i do? I wanna use point buy but im not sure if all 3 are completely different
or they are 3 different ways to do it
your DM and group will ultimately decide. for now, use either point buy or standard array
since those can easily be verified
Point buy and standard array are the most generally allowed

It can be super fun!! Remember that communication is key, and to have fun
Fun?
My players have pain.
once im finish, can i have permission to DM my character sheet for tips or comments pls @foggy saffron @glass summit
(im sorry for ping)
what are tool proficiency in character creation?? I cant find in rules :(
tool proficiencies are for things like "land vehicles" or "chef's tools"
im rogue, i cant find thief tools
It's to have proficiency when your dm asks you to make a roll using them
ooh okay, i can pick whatever i want then?
It should say how many you can pick

I think it auto gives you proficiency in thieves' tools if you're a rogue

What edition were tool proficiencies added?
No idea tbh, I don't remember at least
i know the concept of skill proficiencies as a whole was introduced in 3e
2e introduced "nonweapon proficiencies" which are very similar to 5e's tool proficiencies. Tool use in 3e was covered by various skills (Appraise, Craft, Disable Device, Knowledge, Open Lock, and Profession).
ah ok thx

So correct me if im wrong but imma transfer dnd currency to "US dollars":
Copper - 1 $ bill
Silver - 10 $ bill
Electrum - 50 $ bill
Gold -100 $ bill
Platinum - 1,000 $ bill
They don't reeeeally have a dollar value because the amounts things cost can be weird
This checks
But if that helps you visualize it then yeah. It (mostly) goes 10 to the next with the exception being electrum cause it's weird
if you just want a very loose, vibes based approximation of how people in the world would see these currencies, that is about right. But it wouldn't hold up under much scrutiny
Of course 1cp doesn’t nessicarily have the samemuch purchasing power as $1
my character is poor so he is living off a 10 dollars a day. So i assume it depends a lot of the world. and the local economy
dunno i just wanted like a rough translator to USD so my brain doesnt die
i wish i could be poor living off 10 dollars a day irl :v
It will depend greatly on the setting you play in yeah
I will also say, most campaigns will then make your character quickly go "WOAH I'M MAKING SO MUCH MONEY" lol
Cause adventurer's make a lot of gold on average
interesting i was about to ask cuz the website gives me 15 gold so i thought it was a lot, then again maybe my first DM will tell me how much money do i start with
Generally your gold given to you via your background is fair game. You'll learn that 15 gp isn't that much money considering the price of some decent gear for adventurers
Plate armor would be 1500 gp if you use the price that the game recommends
(aka $150,000 in your method)
The D&D economy is weird. 15 gold is both more than most peasants will make for months of labor and a pittance for an adventurer
i see, well if i need more gold, i can always rob a noble's house for profit
Steal from the rich and give it to the poor (my starved and deprived wallet)
Also i just finish my character sheet, any DM who wanna see and give tips and comments?
im nervous haha
If you chuck a link into #character-discussion when you're ready im sure thered be a few ppl happy to give it a once over
it's a good reason to have a reason to go adventuring other than money. Money is relatively easy to come by, so what do you do once you've got enough to live on for a while? Money is a means to an the end for adventurers; ask yourself what it is your character wants to do in the world with the money they earn through adventuring?
i wanna start a business
D&D doesn’t really work well as a trades/economic game
It really is focussed on “adventuring”
You can for sure find a DM willing to let you have a business on the side though, but it'll have to be talked through
yeah you can certainly do that on the side, but keep in mind that the point of D&D is generally to go on dangerous adventures and quests. It's up to you to make sure your character has a motivation to do so.
The Guild Merchant background sounds like a great fit for this
Hello, how do i put my two prof bonus on the app
do i need 50 feet of robe? thats 10 pounds o.o
Most people don't care about weight. You can always dump the item in campaign if you feel so inclined, but 50 feet of rope can be useful
I just bought my first dnd set. Are there any tips that anyone can give me
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
The above is a good list of resources to make your way through
In terms of more general advice for a newby, I'd say focus more on the concept of your character than getting too bogged down in mechanics
When forming a group It's important to communicate and set expectations for a campaign.
- Is the the type of game players want to participate in, the type of game the DM wants to run?
im not sure if i should join a community or join a small group of ppl. I prefer to play with friends but no one plays. So i guess i gotta play with ppl I don't know :(
People can be really nice to play with, just gotta find the right group! It can be scary, but they're out there
my charisma is unironically 8 points
Hey guys, i'm new to the discord, sorry if the instructions are somewhere I just can't figure it out. how do I look for a game to play as a player? again I apologies for this
People love to get new players in their game. Most of us love helping new people get involved in our hobby
Idk
