So where are you stuck? What’s one thing (to start) that you still need to fill out?
Uhm for example all the one on side of ability scores
How do i know where to put competence or expert?
Well your next step is to assign each of your rolled scores to one ability score. What class are you? Knowing that can help us recommend which ability scores are most important for your character.
Wood elf cleric
Your class, background, and possibly race lists which ability skills you are proficient in.
There’s probably a circle there next to each skill / saving throw. You can fill in that circle to indicate which ones you’re proficient in.
As a cleric you choose two from History, Insight, Medicine, Persuasion, and Religion
As a wood elf you have proficiency in the Perception skill.
Since you're a cleric, you should probably prioritize Wisdom as your highest ability score, since it's the score you use for many of your spells. Assign the highest rolled score to Wisdom.
You assign those numbers to six ability scores: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
I feel like we're doing two things at once here. No need to overcomplicate things by juggling two topics at once. Do you want to finish up your Ability Scores or your Proficiencies first?
Yes, you assign them. You don't use them in the order you roll.
9 strenght, 10 dexterity, 11 constitution, 14 intelligence, 15 wisdom, 10 charisma
could work as they are?
I’d swap INT with STR or CON.
They certainly could! Your character probably doesn't need that much Intelligence (which I would swap with Constitution), but it's still very functional
To be honest, though, you might be better off just using the standard array: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, and 8.
Those really aren't great rolled stats
And choosing where to put them?
Yep
can u suggest the order?
No and no
The order might shift a little depending.
What kind of god did you want to serve?
Or what kind of abilities interested you in cleric?
For a cleric, I think it's probably safe to say 13, 12, 14, 8, 15, 10. That's what I'd do, at least!
As a wood elf, you’d add +2 DEX and +1 WIS as well.
So if you use those numbers, that would bump to 13, 14, 14, 8, 16, 10.
i've seen there's tons of domain.. some are good some are orrible right?
I don’t think any of them are horrible.
But some are a little more potent than others.
horrible* sorry
Oh, I wasn’t trying to correct you there. Sorry if it came across that way. 😅
Anyway, if you choose a domain that gives proficiency in heavy armor and martial weapons, then it might be worth swapping STR and DEX.
What about luck , shamanism and life and death?
But that’s if your going for like a frontline battle cleric.
those are the one i found interesting
There are both Life and Death domains.
There’s no official option for luck or shamanism.
godless it's nice too
Though maybe the Nature domain could fit for shamanism.
You probably want to end up with 14 con, 14 dex, 16 wis
Then you need to write your ability score modifiers as well.
so as a wood elf you can assign the 12 to dex, the 14 to con, and the 15 to wis to get that result
Just look up each score on this table, and write down the number on the right.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#AbilityScoresandModifiers
the 13, 8, and 10 are up to you, personally I would go 8 str, 10 int, 13 cha
Keep them separate; don’t add them together.
So you’d find 13 on the left for STR (or whichever), which has a +1 in the other column.
I have to add the modifier in the space below them
So you’d write +1 in that space below, yeah.
Some people put the score below and the modifier above.
Personal preference, really.
But during play, you’ll be using the modifiers more often.
ok did it
Perfect!
Now for Saving Throws and Skills, you’ll want to match those same modifiers based on the ability.
So for your STR saving throw and your STR skills, like Athletics, you’d write the same +1.
(if you assigned the 13 to strength)
ok did it
And then just continue through the list.
how do i choose in what i'm proficient?
Your features will tell you when you get a proficiency.
Oh oke
They might come from your race, class, subclass, or background.
your class will specify 2 saving throw proficiencies generally, and your background, class, and race will specify a variety of skill proficiencies
Sometimes they’ll give you a specific one. Other times they’ll let you choose from a few options or the whole list.
But just fill in that circle next to any you’re proficient in, and add your proficiency bonus for that line.
If you’re starting at level 1, that’s another +2.
So if you had +1 STR and proficiency in Athletics (+2), you’d have a +3 for Athletics in total.
For now he's a cleric, wood elf nature domain, far traveler
What is the best Cantrip for a halfling bard?
there's no single best cantrip for bards
Just make sure you have at least one combat relevant cantrip, and go wild with the rest
I have been indecisive about every little thing on my character
Thanks!
The different armors are all described here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/equipment#ArmorandShields
You'll probably want to use medium armour, given you're proficient in it
I don’t think you’d have either.
again, if you have any it'll be specified by your features. You probably won't have any, tho
Immunity is very rare.
Which weapons?
a mace and a light crossbow
they're given with the priest pack xD
it's time for ispiration, vision and perception
perception is a skill, same as the others you went over
inspiration you can ignore, that's something dms grant
wdym exactly by vision?
eyesight probably
No like, what exactly does it say on the sheet
I don't remember that part of character sheets
i'm sorry the sheet it's not in english i am translating it
ah
Probably darkvision or not
I belive that would be the senses section then
Wood elves have darkvision 60 ft.
basically if your race/class/etc gives you a sense of smell, or darkvision, or something else, you write it down there
like your darkvision as a wood elf
ok done
i have to check race background and class competence now
also class privilege and archetips
If this is listed separately from your other skills, it's probably asking for your passive perception.
Which is just 10 + whatever your perception bonus is.
Question, are all races always welcome? There seems to be a ton of different races and they all seem to seperated into categories like "Players handbook?". Are all of them always available or are certain ones niche and only allowed to be used in campaigns every now and then?
categories like "player's handbook" refer to the book they were released in
It's entirely up to the dm what races they allow
however it's generally safe to assume player's handbook races will be fine
What races are commonly allowed? Im trying to make a character and i dont exactly want to make a new one in the case that they disallow the one i wanted to choose
Got it, thank you
It really just depends on the group.
That makes sense, thanks
Depends on group mostly, although, most of the time elves, humans, dwarves and half elves are usually allowed
Variant humans are sometimes banned if the DM doesn't want to deal with feats, astral elves if no spelljammer
What about things such as genasi?
They probabably wouldn't be banned, however it is possible
They're from a supplement outside of the Player's Handbook, so I'd recommend checking with your DM just in case.
Got it
Im aware that races get certain bonuses, but are certain things locked? For example if id like to make a character that intends to be able to take a lot of damage, would i be locked to races that share that trope?
Depends on the DM, there are rules in Tasha's cauldron of everything that lets you change around stat distribution
The biggest thing that determines what your character can or can't do is your class, and your race usually only provides very minor benefits.
I mean they can do stats
And some abilities are game changers
What sort of classes would fit into the category of a sort of "tank", able to soak up a ton of damage? Theres quite a few classes and im not sure i understand them all so well
yo what up indecisive!
Aye
and are classes in the same category as races? Where the DM can choose to disregard some and not accept them?
apologies for the bunch of questions, but im trying my best to learn, lol
Barbarian are probably the best at tanking, Fighters, Paladins and rangers I would say
No worries lol
Technically yes, the DM can say what is allowed and what isn't, most banned classes depend on the world though
Most of the time the banned classes are like artificers, clerics or paladins. Clerics and paladins not often though
Not many classes are usually banned
How about like a cleric?
I forgot about clerics lol, yeah they are probably one of the best classes both for beginners and in game
They can do almost any job well
They can heal, tank, damage, roleplay
plus way more
What’s difference between paying for sessions and free one
Often times paid DMs are professional and will generally provide a better experience with more care to the game. They also usually have a high degree in expertise
I think it's easier to describe almost in reverse: If you're a new player, you should avoid wizards, bards, sorcerers, monks, and arguably warlocks. Most everything else can be figured out.
Free DMs are more hit or miss on the quality of the game
I agree, I think the best beginner classes are, Barbarian, Fighter, Cleric and Rogue
I assume that means they arent often banned?
Okay what’s the average cost then for paid games
Most classes aren't usually banned
I'm not sure #paid-looking-for-game , you can probably find your answer there
It looks like around 15-25
Often times, the most banned class is usually artificer which I heavily do not recommend for a beginner to play
I see. Im reading up on skills as my race seems to let me choose one. Control flames seems to be very specific that the flame must fit in a 5-foot cube, is this because flames are often bigger than that?
It's incredibly, incredibly rare for a whole class to be banned, but it's best to check with your DM just in case to see if they have any restrictions.
Okay
A cantrip are usually meant to be a light and easy power that is convenient without too much power, so a 5 foot limit on it would be for things like lighting fireplaces or cooking on average
A spell like Control Flames is a Cantrip, which means it's the lowest level spell and doesn't actually cost any resources to cast. Because of this, they tend to be fairly weak to make up for it.
Or putting out fires
I understand, i can only choose between cantrip which makes sense
Most of them seem to have some sort of combat effect or use regardless, would picking one like "Message" be bad?
Message is a pretty good cantrip
I assume you're an elf, then? It's safest to pick something for utility, like Message and Prestidigitation.
a pure caster will generally want one or two combat cantrips and the rest utility
Got it
I havent chosen yet, right now im mostly looking through races, classes, abilities etc and trying to learn before i make any final choices
however if you're a martial who gets a cantrip some way or another, picking a utility cantrip is your best bet
But yes, that could be a choice id like
The best combat cantrip besides eldtrich blast I would say is firebolt and then the best utility cantrips I would say are guidance, presidigitation and minor illusion
Minor illusion does look interesting, but because of the limit on size im more keen to choose Message
reading up on cleric, holy that is a bunch of text for each of the stuff i get when leveling up
yup
Cleric is great like that
Define..great
Clerics get something almost every level so it never feels like you are missing out by leveling up
Hello
That makes sense, but how does the whole deity thing work? Im using dndbeyonds character creation to learn, and it seems to only give me the option of a life domain, while in the text it specifies domain related to my deity
All the spellcasting classes can be a bit complex and overwhelming for some new players, but with enough drive they're totally playable. Remember, you usually only get one or two new skills per level up, so you never get completely overwhelmed
Is that not a choice I can make? And if it is, what kind of deitys are within limits?
That's probably because you haven't bought the other rulebooks
The free Basic Rules only give you access to one subclass.
I see, alright
Other rule books other than the basic rules get you more subclasses
Which deity is Life domain, then?
The Domain for a cleric is their Subclass. There are plenty of subclasses for each class, but the Life Domain is the only one provided for free.
You'd have to purchase the others to have access to them, or have them shared to you by your DM.
There is a bunch of different gods for life domain
Is there a list I could look at, so I can choose which is the deity of my character in the story?
It's an incredibly fun hobby
You're better served by speaking with your DM, but if you really want a list: https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Life_domain
Thank you!
I would recommend saving this for after you've found your DM. Their game may or may not have any number of deities.
Does all games have deities even? Seems like its a thing very specific to cleric
@fair kayak I do t know how to play or how to do much of anything
Some games don't
It's very hard to say what all games do or don't have.
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
That's something you have to ask your DM based on their campaign setting.
In the cases that dont, would I completely be unable to use certain abilities then?
No, clerics nor paladins don't need to worship a deity to get their divine powers.
I thought clerics got their powers from gods while paladin their oath
It's fairly safe to assume most games will have deities, but a very small percentage might not. That's why it's important to find a DM to be 100% sure what character would work best in your game.
Im assuming I can still have the fact that my character serves a deity or a god in my story, even if its not technically usable in the campaign
Clerics can get their powers from their faith in an ideal or force.
oh neat I thought it had to be a god
Saying "I worship a god of life" and not specifying which one is perfectly fine! You can nail down the specifics with your DM later.
What about something like a cleric getting their powers from the literal sun?
Things like these are up to the DM.
Also, which method should I use for ability scores? Theres 3 options and im assuming this like most of my questions is DM dependant, but is there any common one?
Just for reference, at least
Often times point buy is the most common one, however, sometimes you can roll for stats
Standard array or point-buy are recommended for familiarizing yourself with the character-creation process. Rolls a DM didn't witness are unlikely to be accepted.
What kind of stats should a high elf cleric prioritize?
The safest bet is probably the Standard Array. You can use that one temporarily while you make your sheet, just be aware you might be asked to change it later
Wisdom as that is your spellcasting stat
Ah, yeah i mean im not making a character for now, im just messing around to learn
And then finalizing once im more knowledgable
A good plan!
Most DMs will allow rolling for stats, but that is the riskiest one
Would it be dumb of me to put all of it into one or two stats, and disregard others?
That is fairly common
I suppose theres a limit of 9 per, but even then i can completely disregard some stats, but is that dumb?
Common does not mean smart HAHA
Not really
QUICK BUILD
You can make a cleric quickly by following these suggestions. First, Wisdom should be your highest ability score, followed by Strength or Constitution. Second, choose the acolyte background.
From https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/cleric.
Most of the time people with have a dump stat that is completely neglected, often times inteligence or strength
I recommend dumping inteligence as a cleric
Oh really? I would assume intelligence would be good
strength lets you wear heavy armor which is really good for a cleric
Nope, it is only good for 2 classes and not many checks
Would Dexterity be okay to be a dump one? And mainly go for strength wisdom and constitution?
With the Standard Array, your highest stat is probably going to be a 16 or 17 and your lowest is going to be an 8 or 9.
Most of the rest will be between 12 and 15
Dex is a somewhat good stat, however clerics don't use it as much so I would say so
That makes sense, im still torn between using standard array or point buy
I would say do Wis, Str, Con (get it to like 14 though), Dex, Cha, Int
Standard array makes my highest stuck at 15, while point buy could make it 19
Why 14 specifically?
For basic recommendations, I'd say Int or Cha would be the best stats to 'dump', but Dex wouldn't be the worst for a Life Cleric
Incorrect. Point-buy tops out at 17, with racial bonuses.
Sorry, i misworded that. I meant that I can put multiple things to 15 and disregard others, while in standard array that isnt really the case
Point buy tops at 15 you can buy with points, 17 is with racial buffs
with only one being the lowest
Odd numbers don't really get you anything, so having 15 con and not planning on raising it higher generally is a waste of a stat point
Ahh, that makes sense
I plan to increase mostly wisdom, so would having strength at 13 be bad too then? As its odd
A 13 strength is perfectly fine
Odd stats aren't bad to have, I would generally throw an extra point at it if I had the space
But 13 strength is above average for most characters
if it's a stat you don't care about, it's not that important. Drop it to 12 if you can and if it gets you extra points to spend elsewhere
18 is doable with CL + half feats btw
odd stats are nice if ur taking a feat that gives a +1 to that stat, e.g. Resilient
I know
Let's keep things nice and simple to start with, folks
What kind of languages should I choose? Im assuming something common, like dwarvish?
I have to go but good luck and I hope they can help you
How are you getting 19
.
For a practice character, it doesn't really matter.
Dwarvish or Elvish are both safe picks if you don't know much about your campaign yet
It is campaign specific, for practice it doesnt matter
Got it
Don't lock down on the character for now until you join a table. Expect to make tweaks when you join a game.
oh man, backgrounds
Being bad in certain stats can get very troublesome very quickly in DnD. You never want to have more than one dump stat.
this seems confusing
What is?
Backgrounds are narratively what your character did before they began adventuring. Mechanically, they give you some equipment and skill proficiencies, maybe a tool or language proficiency.
Backgrounds, along with all the other options beneath it
There's no need to read through all of it - you can stick with something simple. Were you a soldier? An acolyte? A sage? Work from there
I suppose for a cleric, an acolyte would make sense
It depends on your backstory as well. If your cleric was once a picketpocket as a kid but reformed and became a priest (Criminal background). Or perhaps they were once a soldier in the army but got tired of seeing death and became a cleric of life (Soldier background).
Makes sense
Backstory is the narrative description of what your character did before becoming an adventurer.
Background is the gameplay mechanics part.
Most of it is roleplaying equipment
How much can i carry? I chose a few things and its up to 23lbs, im not sure how much im allowed to pick as equipment
Depends on your Str score.
(also depends on if encumbrance is being ran in the campaign, but it's safer to assume it is)
If you're using D&D Beyond's character sheet, it calculates it for you.
It does!? I've never noticed that, that's actually so sick
Regular encumberence is your str score (not modifier) times 15.
So at 10 str it's 150 lbs
20 str, 300, etc.
it doesnt really come up in practice enough to be worth worrying over tbh
You're only allowed what you get from your class and background unless the DM says different. So you can't just go add everything you'd be able to carry.
I haven't been able to touch my favorite character in years (pre-pandemic), but she's a warlock with a criminal background, because she is a spy for one of the princes of faerie.
Would it be dumb to only carry as little as 23lbs, then? its very simple stuff
Tbh, most stuff other than weapons and armour tends to be fluff that's rarely used
Why would it be dumb?
You'd just carry whatever you start with. You don't add anything else.
Background gives stuff and your class gives stuff.
Would recommend maybe taking rations, rope and a torch, but if your dm ignores food you can ignore rations, and torches can be replaced by the light cantrip
Armour tends to be heaviest thing to encumber you.
Got it, then would something like a shortbow not make sense? As its not my class or background. I only seem to have vestments, an amulet and incense. Is that not too little?
What class are you?
It seems like you're not adding your class stuff.
They might be picking it as their "simple weapon"
(unless I'm remembering that incorrectly)
They were asking if it was OK to add, which seems like they don't have one but wanted one.
Ahhh ok, I think I'm just struggling to read rn then
Hi
Heyo
Cleric. And im aware that it lets me choose between the starting equipment, but I assume i dont choose..it all
Yes you do. You get everything it says. DnD Beyond automatically does it for you.
You don't have any armour?
Ahh, makes sense
D&D Beyond asks you if you want to start with Starting Equipment or Gold.
You click on the add starting equipment thing, make your choices and add it.
Yup, got it
Would a voicecall to help be appreciated?
I believe ive got a rough character sheet for my test, is there any chance I could post it in the chance that theres something horribly wrong or something that ive missed?
yeah you can send the link
Use a reputable file sharing service and you can link to files that way - make sure to follow server rules on posting links.
It would be a link or a photo, not any file
Just remember to toggle the setting for keeping your character sheet private to "off" if you're linking to the DnD Beyond sheet directly
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/122796440 here it is, keep in mind that its rough and just a quick test. Any feedback including harsh ones is appreciated
Other than picking your spells, looks great!
Picking my spells?
Yep! Make sure you tick the checkbox by the weapons you want equipped so they show up under "attacks" too!
probably should equip your stuff (click the box next to the items)
oh and why leather armor?
Yup. As a cleric, you get to pick a few spells at level 1
It was that or chain, which I didnt meet the requirements for i believe
you have 13 strength
scale mail is also an option
Will do one second
the subclass they chose doesn't give proficiency
Which (I think) is enough
Ah, it looks like you didn't pick your divine domain. Some of them, like the free Life Domain, give you the ability to use Chain
yes, correct
Ohhhh the subclass makes sense
Yes, I fixed that now
ill update it
Can someone help i have no idea what to do
check out the free basic rules
Are you brand new here?
they're linked in the pinned messages of this channel
Yea
does it update by itself? or do i need to share a new link
updates by itself
Using Chain Mail will grant you a lot higher AC (makes you harder to hit), but comes with the downside that you're very loud when you walk, and easier to spot when you're sneaking around.
checked the pinned messages and there should be one for new players for ya
Alright, should be updated with my domain, equipment equipped and chain rather than leather
You should be able to choose a few more cleric spells
Ill add abilities soon, but that seems hard
wdym?
Well, reading and choosing abilities seems like quite a bit of work
you've removed the leather, but you don't seem to have added chain
Oh, oops
other than spells, there's no abilities left to choose??
There we go
I mean spells, I just use the word abilities, sorry about that
ah okay
And if you’re a cleric, you have access to all cleric spells of appropriate level. If you don’t like your choice for the day you can choose different cleric spells the next day
fyi you should end up with 4 cantrips and 5 spells
3 cantrips from cleric, 1 from high elf
2 spells from your divine domain, 3 prepared from the general cleric list
2 spells and 1 cantrip are already in there
Oh? How neat
Yes, the 2 spells are divine domain right? It was automatic
So i need 3 general cleric spells, 2 more cantrips from cleric and 1 from high elf
correct?
no, you need to add 3 general cleric spells and 3 cantrips from cleric
the 1 cantrip you already have is from high elf
ahhh
thank you thank you, ill do that now
What do the small letters by the ability mean? Like the small c
or r
Spell, not ability.
c = Concentrate
r = Ritual
again, yeah spells. Im just used to videogame terminology from what i play
C means concentration. You can only concentrate on one spell at a time, and you have to make a saving throw each time you take damage
Ability and spell are two different things in D&D.
that's fine, but calling them by their correct names will help people help you and understand what you mean
The DC for the save is half the damage, or 10 whichever number is higher
Yes, ill keep that in mind. Im still learning :)
Ive chosen some spells now, can someone double check that theyre okay and i havent chosen something horribly bad?
As for Ritual, it means that, as long as you know that spell and have the class feature that lets you, you can cast that spell without a spell slot. Casting a spell as a ritual takes an extra 10 minutes to cast
The super short version is:
- you can only have one (c) Concentration spell running at a time. You're free to cast non concentration spells in the meantime though. This is to balance their power, since they tend to be strong
- a (r) ritual spell can be cast without using any resources if you spend an extra 10 minutes casting it. They're better for non-combat scenarios
Thats super neat, thank you!
pretty good choices
I would personally swap out shield of faith for healing word, as bless is probably a more valuable use of your concentration and healing word is good for saving allies from a distance
If you look in the Player’s Handbook (and maybe the Basic Rules?) each class has a section that gives you a rough guide for making a level 1 character of that class, which includes helpful spells, if you have those
but it's not super necessary
Ahh, okay
thank you!
all good
keep in mind that as a cleric, you can swap out your prepared spells each day
Is there anything else on my sheet im missing except a picture? I plan to draw that at a later date
so you can try out different spells when you want
Yup! got it
Nothing I can see
Seems like im doing alright for being an absolute begginer disregarding that ive asked thousands of questions
Nobody knows everything when they’re starting out, asking questions is how you learn!
That's what we're here for.
The next step is unfortunately the hardest: finding your DM!
thank you to everyone that answered my questions regardless if they were tedious or obvious. I will work on my character and try myself in an actual game sometime, once i figure out a place to go to in person or online
Are notes (and subsequently background) not available for others to see?
is there a way to change that?
Only the DM and owning player can see those sections (sometimes player characters have secrets that the rest of the table shouldn’t know yet)
Ahh i see, so my background story isnt available for others except for my DM? Damn all that work 🥲
Well you can share that with the group when you start.
Makes sense, makes sense
Feel free to share it in #character-discussion . I recommend starting with the three sentence version first.
Theres specific versions? Like three sentence version?
They're just recommending to keep it short probably
A common shorthand. You describe your character's upbringing, how they came to their class, and what drives them to adventure. It's a nice way to be able to share your character's profile without everyone at the table waiting while you go through page after page.
Also, there may be a prize.
You should usually make your character's backstory once you join a group. You shouldn't make character fully fleshed out THEN join a campaign.
I'd stick to a rough idea, then make it more solid once you join a group.
Oh, for sure. But you can still put the general ideas together.
Like "I want to play a halfling fighter. They need gold for their little sister to pay off a gang that kidnapped the sisters pet dog." is easier work into a campaign than something super specific or is from a particular city, etc.
Nothing wrong with building ideas though. Just don't be married to them in case you need to pivot.
That makes sense
creating a base of a character is fine, you should refine it and actually build it further when you join a group
What’s good going into game cause I’ve never played and I’ve sort semi watched a game on YouTube
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.

Someone can help me with a sheet? it's for tomorrow pliiz
what do you need help with specifically
Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
After you read the rules and/or watch the tutorial videos, feel free to ask questions here.
I don't know nothings about archetypse, competence and spells
Define archetypes
"Character archetypes are, in essence, specialties from which the character's class can branch out to"
You're referring to sub-classes
Choose your class before working about a sub-class.
Like RoD DMC and similar
That depends on the class when you pick one
Check the links above. Read the free Basic Rules and/or watch the Handbooker Helper tutorial videos.
What?
I'm sorry i'm not reading things in english so i don't know if translaction is correct
Dragonblood, half vampire, Dark creature
Those are some example i've found
Please just read the Basic Rules first.
There are no half-vampires or dragonblood.
Dhampir are half vampire
You are going to confuse yourself more by trying to insert things into D&D that aren't in the game from other games/media.
i mean sorta, but also not really
Let's keep this simple for the new players.
Aight
i'd highly suggest figuring out a class you'd like to play first, before worrying about races @royal steeple
should a new player start with a magic user?
you can definitely start with a spellcasting class like wizard or cleric, but it may be harder for you
I personally recommend a non-spellcaster for sake of ease.
What about a sorcerer?
sorcerers are a spellcasting class, and they're definitely a bit more unique, so you could start with one if you wanted
If you want to dip your toes into casting you could go ranger!
Beef i already have chosen the class, assigned the point, chosen the background, weapon and starting items and made a lore
alright, do you need help with anything else?
Pick a race that would compliment those things and maybe raise the stats you'd want raised, or pick a race that sounds fun!
Probably the problem is that this sheet is in italian and even if i translate things they don't make any sense
Have you tried using dnd beyond?
why are you using a sheet in italian, i assume you speak it right?
The Basic Rules in Italian
https://dnd.wizards.com/it/what-is-dnd/basic-rules
Or are you saying that you read italian, and you have to translate the race stuff over every time?
are you translating the sheet you're using or are you translating things from italian into english
My sheet is in italian, there's things like archetypes that kinda make no sense for now
dnd beyond will make things alot easier for you i'd say
Yeah i'm Italian so it will be in italian, most of info on the web are in english
OMYAC linked the Italian version of the basic rules above. Might be work checking out
Sadly to admit.. we screw almost everythings we do, except food
Yehyeh, i have to try this too, thanks omyac
Uhm i already encountered the first problem
Homebrew Content
Magic: The Gathering Content
Eberron Content
Noncore D&D Content
Dragonlance Content
Planescape
it's asking me to check what to exclude
There's somethings like restricion in dnd or i can choose freely?
Ignore all those for now. Those are all optional additional content that the DM decides to use or not.
When the Incapacitated condition states "Can't take Actions or Reactions" that still leaves movement and bonus actions, right?
Oh ok thanks
Anything that prevents actions also prevents bonus actions
If the creature is Incapacitated they'll have other conditions such as Petrified, Paralyzed, Stunned, or Unconsicous as well.
But technically yes, incapacitated creatures can still move, although it's pretty rare to have something that incaps but doesn't inflict anything that stops movement too
I’m making a Loxodon Barbarian and I was wondering what I’m supposed to do with their armor class, because with loxodon I get natural armor which is 12+ constitution which for me would be 15 and with barbarian I get Unarmored defense which is 10+dexterity+ Constitution which would end up being 14, so what should I do?
You can't just exclusively inflict Incapacitated?
You go with whatever is highest
If you have multiple features that give you different ways to calculate your AC, you choose which one to use.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#ArmorClass
It's very rare. I can't think of something off the top of my head that only nflicts Incap with no movement restrictions either.
So, if by some means, homebrew or not, Incapacitated alone was inflicted, that is still mechanically sound, yeah?
Oh- Tasha's Hideous Laughter!
Technically also makes you prone and unable to stand up, but you could crawl.
However this is getting outside of #dnd-newcomers now.
Oh, I see, I see, good enough, many thanks!
Hey yall, i'm new to the server
Hello!
How ya doin?
yooo wsg im also new
Yo lets go
trying to learn and get into dnd
Uhm by an ideas can someone suggest me race and class?
what kind of playstyle do you want
blowgun are in game?
Oof
ok, somethings small, tricky that can be permastealth and attack with a ranged weapon, like a blowgun or a crossbow
is dng very time consuming?
permastealth isnt gonna be something to get early on
feels like i hsould start in the summer
Lol no prob
anyone know a dm or someone i can talk to for joining a game? i checked out find a gmae but idk what any of the stuff means like e5 or smthing
I have played a Fire Genasi Fighter for a while, if you wanna see it this is the link
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/108279616/1879Da
Yeah thanks beef
for classes, monks, rangers, and rogues are generally good at stealth
They are yeah
a race wont really make you “stealthy”, the ability to be stealthy comes primarily from your class and ability score decisions
What about a halfing rogue?
there are also some advantages to being size small
Good idea
its an option
wood elf is a good one too, since they get some fancy proficiencies with weapons and can stealth easier in some places
somethings small xD the smallest the better
Its good to have a general concept but please start with the basic rules to learn how the game works
Further discussion about a concept is difficult without a knowledge base to start with

As others have noted, class matters more for whether you are stealthy than your species.
After checking those out, come holler and we can point you down more specific paths
I would like to know if it is possible to have a monster such as a star lancer as an ally.
thats up to a DM, but probably not
DM's call.
Thanks.
You could cast the Conjure Celestial spell to do so, however with that spell you could be conjuring CR4 Celestials, so its a bit overkill
You could talk to your DM about allowing it as a flavorful option for Find Greater Steed, as it is on par with the CR of the other options of that spell
is there any youtubers/twitch channels one would recommend that shows from a players perspective? I'm interested to know what players are constantly needing to keep track of or what they are always changing in their sheets. I'll be playing a cleric.
During a game? Other than your HP, your other stats don't really change other than maybe your AC if you take armor off.
Other things to track would be your spell slots, gold, channel divinity and any subclass or racial features that have limited uses.
Oh, and items, but other than consumables those don't really change too much.
yea, during a game
Sorry, I don't know a channel that really focuses on that other than tutorials on how to play the game. But if you have questions about general gameplay I could answer those.
i 3D printed a spell slot tracker but i dont like the design, so was going to design a new one but was going to add in other things that change through a game
It's mostly the things I mentioned above then.
I don't know exactly how the tracker you're printing is laid out, but just knowing your spell slots is pretty helpful.
hi im new to dnd

Yeah, you can message DMs or post a listing and hope someone answers you.
Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
After you read the rules and/or watch the tutorial videos, feel free to ask questions here.
You can also check other websites like reddit.com/r/lfg, roll20.net, online forums, etc.
i have a character
You usually make a character after you join a group since they might have rules about it.
If you have a premade character that follows the rules, they could join like an Adventurer's League game which is like public DnD that is hosted at gamestores in real life some places.
But in general you join, see what kind of character is allowed, what kind of backstory they should have, then you make your character with your group.
ok thx
I'm making a high elf cleric. What stats should I increase with point buy?
WIS and CON are important. STR or DEX next, depending on what kind of armor you expect to use. Anything else can be adjusted to taste.
What kind of cleric subclass?
Just a base cleric. I only have free content.
So life cleric?
Then you can go with heavy armor, so you probably want 15 str, 15+ wisdom as much con as you can and then the remainder in dex or whatever other stat you like.
15 str let's you wear the best heavy armor without slow down, wisdom is for spells, con is for hp and keeping concentration spells up. The others are just kinda nice to have.

Happy to help
Hello! My name's Kanin. I hope everyone's having a great day so far.
So I joined the server to learn more about DND and hopefully play one myself sometime.
I hope you are able to play one dungeon and one dragon
I hope so too. Nice to meet you, Nasada.
As I am very eager to learn more about terminologies and other stuff. I hope you don't mind if I start asking a lot of questions.
like.. a lot..
Lol of course! Here we also have something that can help ya out
new?
Ope that is supposed to put up a message I thought lol
Look under the pinned messages, there's some beginner's tools there!
That's fantastic! I'm really excited and Yes, I'm quite new to DND.
I got so excited that I went to this online website and created a character without even knowing the basics..
Oh nice lol, was it DND beyond by chance?
No.. I believe it was along the lines of "Dungeon Master" (?)
I'm not sure.
I created a character that kinda reflects my real self if Iived in a fantasy world.. some pretty embarrassing stuff. XD
Oh I think I know the site!
Dungeon Master senpai
It always makes me nervous to type site names that aren't dnd beyond cause I don't know what's considered a piracy site
Do you mind if I share the details of my character here? Or is there another channel for that?
(Apologies if I ended up talking a lot. I'm aware that I sound like a very excited kid right now, but I can't help it )
#character-discussion for that kind of stuff usually! (although be mindful to yourself if it's a character based on you lol)
Thank you so much, err.. DM CamJam and Lady Nasada.
Please don't worry. I won't be sharing any personal information as I made my character really close to my ideals rather than my actual self.
:)
Welcome!
There's information for beginners in the pinned messages here to get you started!
I really appreciate it.
Im new to DnD, never played before but I know how to play and thats it I really don’t know anything else for stuff like classes and their bonuses and stats, but I do really love RPGs and fantasies so DnD is a must in my bucket list

I am new but not unaware of how the game works, I have hopped in to fill in for others in dnd campaigns but I would enjoy being in a new one and learning more along the way. :))

Is it normal for people to invite you to their campaigns have you create your character and then kick you a few days later with no warning or saying anything? Cause so far that's happened to me twice and it's rather frustrating
Didn't even get into one session
i just joined, i kinda fell into this fanticy obsession and thought id try it out
did the campaign end? did you submit your character? If so what was the character?
not really normal, did they say anything after or no
same but that happened to me like in 2020 or 2019
Both campaigns barely started I submitted my character with no issues coming from the DM and it was a fighter and a storm cleric respectively and they both kicked me from the campaign without a single word to me
you dodged a bullet
I'd say you're probably better off not being in their game if they're that bad at communication
Are there any good videos of full length games including character creation? Me and some friends all played our first campaign together but character creation took forever and there are still things we are unsure about, and the gameplay was pretty janky/a lot of unsure things. So I want to watch a full one to get an idea of how things should go
I mean I guess? But I still would like to join a game so I can actually learn how to play and experience playing dnd
You'll find one! Just gotta keep trying
Hope so
There are tutorials on youtube for character creation, and most channels play with many house rules so you'll never get a perfect RAW experience there (but most people don't play RAW anyways). That being said, I personally really enjoy Dimension 20
Just like there are players that just up and disappear for one reason or another, the same goes for DMs
Maybe they changed their mind about the game, whos to say
Maybe its just frustrating when you create a character get hyped about playing said character that you put a lot of thought behind it only to find out that you've been kicked without so much of goodbye
you can reuse it couldn’t you?
I mean if the DM has need of said character they might want you to play something else to fit the party comp
You absolutely can, just gotta rewrite backstory sometimes (which can often times effect how much you want to play the character)
When you guys play do you use any physical objects to represent GP or just keep track with paper?
Just keep track with paper
It’s much easier but gold props can be a great immersion tool
I saw a Reddit post about buying bulk washers and nuts and spray painting them so I think I’ll go with that!
Props can always be fun for everybody, just be careful how much gold you're handing out for quests lol
yea I think we will use different sizes/shapes for higher denomination so we can have more with less
Platinum pieces also exist, so those could help
I heard this game has a class stats system, but could a character be better at a stat? Because im thinking about a fast ranger with low def as my first character
For sure! Check out the character builder on dnd beyond!
Also check out the pinned messages here!
They have useful things for new people
oh thanks i'll check it out
No prob! Those should all help ya understand how stats and class stuff works
whats the best/ easist character for absolute newscomers to play as?
Probably a martial! Are you looking to cast spells or hit things with a weapon?
Probably a fighter
Hit things probably
Fighter would be a great first one to try then!
In our campaign, I was trying to get information from a person in a tavern and I decided to buy them beers to make them drunk. Since we are all new the dm wasn’t really sure how to decide if the NPC admitted the information or not so we deciding on rolling for insight and he set a lower number since the NPC was drunk. Is that kinda “typical” or should we have done things a different way?
Insight is the skill generally used for determining if a creature is lying or at least not being 100% truthful in what they’re saying. It can be used to get an NPC to admit fault, but from the situation it seems like one of the other social skills (intimidation, persuasion, deception, etc) might have been more appropriate
Having the npc roll lower is a pretty typical way to do it (or lowering the dc on whatever roll they would've had you make)
The npc (if drunk) would have disadvantage technically anyways
That makes sense! Thanks that’s really helpful. I think we will make a cheat sheet for all the skills and what situation they may be used in for next session
Here’s an example of when Insight would likely be used:
NPC: “Yesterday I was at the tavern with my friend Janice”
Player: “Hey we found that love letter yesterday in NPC’s room mentioning a Janice, can I determine if he’s lying?”
DM: “Roll Insight. He’s drunk so I’ll lower the DC.”
Successful Roll
DM: “You notice his eyes got a little shifty as he said the word ‘friend.’ You suspect there’s more to their relationship than he’s letting on”
Player: “Janice is more than a friend, isn’t she?”
NPC: “Ok you got me. Janice is this new lady I met, but as part of my clergy’s tenets I’m forbidden to have intimate relationships…”
Ohhh okay, that’s helpful. In this scenario we were trying to ask for information about a nearby town and wanted to soften him up a bit before asking because the situation surrounding the town was secretive. So maybe persuasion would be the best choice there?
Yeah most likely
Thanks 😊
How big does path of the giants make you? Because I know you become a large creature, but does it double your height? Or do you just become the bare minimum height to be considered a large creature
Do spells in reactions fill up a spell slot or no?
Fun that you decided to play D&D it's a little complex in the beginning but I'm sure you would get the hang of it!

The above resources can help you get started! You don't need to read all of the rules before finding a game, but having a look over character creation and combat rules before finding a game can help speed things up. And of course you can ask questions here!
Character Creation is one of the things you can have a go at before finding a game. There are step by step guides, and as a practice PC you don't need to think too hard. You can just pick any 'Basic rules' class and race and see if you can make it- once you've made one PC you've basically got the idea for making any PC.
Then really it's finding a game.
Thanks! I have done Roleplay a lot, which I’ve been told is similar
100%
Yes spells that have a reaction casting time still take up spell slots
I don’t believe it’s explicitly stated anywhere so I’d say it’s up to your DM. I would assume as long as doubling your size doesn’t make your character take up more than a 10x10 ft grid it should be ok
Welcome!
We have some useful links and resources in the pinned messages here in the channel. Please take a look and let us know if you have any specific questions.
Yo what's up. Decently new to dnd and was wondering if there was a way to DM like a dungeon crawl type of vibe? Like I'm new to playing but I have some friends online interested in playing but they seem to like the fighting aspect more, which I do as well. Is there like a way to make a simple like "battle" campaign thats a one shot or just like mock battles? I've never DM'd before so just looking to see the possibilities
Totally doable! You may want to hit up #dm-discussion to talk shop with other DMs. I’d also suggest running premade adventures if you’re new to D&D and DM’ing as it can take a lot of the mental burden of writing and preparing an adventure off your plate so you can focus more on the game mechanics.
Thank you for that. I think most of my buddies are more interested in combat, so I'll ask over there to see if there was something similar
Dungeon of the Mad Mage is an official adventure that is a mega dungeon - might take a look at that.
Will definitely do, I think it would be online if that might change anything. Just have some buddies from different states who want to play and want to accommodate
The commands for the bot to create a post in the LFG channels starts with a forward slash like so: /
👍
Dungeon of the Mad Mage starts at level 5. It depends on how new to the game your group is, but I generally don't recommend that new players start at that high of a level. It can lead to a lot of overwhelming information and choice paralysis. Level 1 is definitely the best place to start if you're brand new, but I tend to think of level 3 as the max if level 1 isn't a possibility for you
There are ways to get there smoothly - my home AL group puttered between Icespire Peak and Phandelver until they cleared Wave Echo Cave. The old version of Phandelver suggested they find a map to a treasure/dungeon as a story hook for proceeding from there; I used it to take them into one of the "more stuff here" tunnels on one of the first couple levels of Undermountain.
Certainly. A lead up adventure is a excellent way to get into a higher level module that interests you. My point is just that you shouldn’t jump in the deep end before you’re ready
I think I might try the ice one. I also think it might just be good to try some mock battles as well. Also if there were only 2 players, would a sidekick or two maybe be a good idea?
Or is there a nice level 3 campaign that's really simple?
Sidekicks are the recommended option if you've got less than 3 players!
I don’t think there are any officially published adventures that start at level 3, but that’s probably the most common starting level for home games that don’t follow a module
There's a few that start at 5.
We were just talking about that, yeah
Planescape might start at 3 but I wouldn't consider it a newbie adventure
Perfect perfect, I appreciate it. I know both of my friends have played bg3, and I think they'd probably like a subclass so figured I'd try and start there. And if it normally starts at level 1, how would I tweak the combat to be a bit more fair? Like would it be more people? Or more health?
There are definitely oneshots that could be run for level 3s as well, but that's not quite the same thing either
Adjusting a prewritten module to start at a higher level would be a lot of work
You’d have to rebalance every combat encounter in the entire book, as well as make sure that the higher levels don’t invalidate something that is meant to be a challenge for low level characters
Unless you just skip the first leg.
Icespire peak via milestones still has the level dings from 1 to 2 and from 2 to 3 come pretty quickly.
Like how quick of dings would they be? Like 1 per session?
But yes, as spamandtuna has said, you could skip laying out the first 3 quests, have them start at level 2, and jump straight to the next sets that come out.
I think 1 to 2 is one session and 2 to 3 is 2-3 sessions, but it's been a while since I was brushing up on it.
Ok, I appreciate that. That might work then
From what I remember Icespire Peak is deadly enough that being overleveled might honestly be fine
At least for the first bit.
That's effectively what Wild Beyond the Witchlight recommends:
The adventure assumes that the characters start at 1st level. If your players are more interested in exploration and social interaction than combat, or if you want to make the characters’ Feywild excursion less dangerous, have them start at 3rd level instead. Advancement is handled the same way regardless.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/twbtw/into-the-feywild#CharacterAdvancement
Oh interesting. I had no idea
Which is better, xp advancement or milestone advancement?
It's a matter of taste, unless you're playing in organized play (in which case, see the relevant documentation). I happen to prefer milestones because it can give the GM a little more control over things.
Neither are objectively better, but milestone is considerably simpler.
Especially if the party finds a noncombat solution to an obstacle that y ou might have been counting on them overcoming as part of intended progression. Or if you need them to hold back a bit so certain things remain challenging instead of becoming trivialized.
Wait is icespire like actually deadly?
A couple of the encounters can be tricky, but mostly not.
Everything at level 1 is deadly.
Yeah.
In general, D&D combat is more dangerous and more likely to result in character death the lower level that you are
But would they breeze through combat at level 3 then?
Not really, but it depends on what they're fighting. D&D combat is really hard to balance properly, especially considering CR is...not great.
helloooo
im new and im kinda scared to play with anyone since they might get annoyed cause im new QwQ
Don't worry, We were all new once.
Yeah, if your group knows you're just getting started, I'm betting they'll be happy to accommodate.

Thanks

Seconded, Handbooker Helper's really good.
Got any specific questions we can help with?
I’m back I watched some of the videos and it helped a bit
Hey how does ability scores work? I get that there are different ways to receive and use them but they still get me confused
Your score in a given stat results in a bonus that you add to skills and abilities using that stat. So for instance a 16 in DEX is a +3. When you roll an ability check, saving throw, or attack roll using DEX, you'd add +3 to the roll to determine the total.
That misses some of the nuance, of course, but that's the gist of things.
?tag new abilities
Abilities
Six abilities provide a quick description of every creature's physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
For each ability, your character has an ability score, a number from 1 to 20. There are three ways to determine ability scores, and your DM will let you know which to use. (If you don’t have a DM yet, choose Standard Array or Point Buy.)
- Roll the Dice. Roll 4d6 and record the total of the highest three. Do this six times, and then assign each total to a different ability.
- Standard Array. Assign each of the following numbers to a different ability: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Point Buy. Choose your own ability scores by spending points.
After assigning your ability scores (and adding any bonuses from your race), determine your ability modifiers, a number from -5 to +5, using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table.
Every Ability Check, Saving Throw, and Attack Roll you make while playing the game will be associated with one of your abilities. A perception check, for example, is a Wisdom based ability check that adds your proficiency bonus if your are proficient in perception. An attack roll with a greatsword is a strength based attack roll that adds your proficiency bonus if you are proficient in greatswords. And so on. So, once you use one of the methods outlined in the bot post above
to determine what your ability scores are, and convert them into ability modifiers as it describes, then you will use those ability modifiers as the numbers that you add to dice rolls that are based on that ability score
hello
welcome
Hello everyone
Henlo
Are you a DM?
Tbf I wouldn’t trust that as a sole indicator, a lot of people seemingly pick it even if they aren’t a dm
Oh
And even people who are DMs and pick it may not dm much
Yeah. Sometimes it's just a color preference.
Whether you are or aren’t a DM is also kinda subjective
Like someone may have DM for a oneshot once, does that make them a DM?
Did you have a specific question about getting started with the game?
Hello!
Welcome to the server (and possibly the hobby)!

The links above should help you get started. When you have questions, do ask!
Ask all the questions
what would be a good class for a dragonborn ?
Any race can be any class.
Race and class are very disconnected
It's more about what you want to play (or how).
Also even if you were to pick one based off the other, picking race based on class would be more appropriate
Race is much less impactful than class
Pick whatever you think is coolest!
Whichever you like most
A good way to intergrate picking race with class is look at what the stat bonuses give you and pick a class that those bonuses would help out. (but at the end of the day, what matters is that you make a character you find fun, so go crazy!)
You can also reassign the stat bonuses to any +2/+1 as per rules introduced in Tasha’s
Hiiii
Haiiii
Me too no way
yaayyy
Yippee
so im new here

idk what role I am

i saw smthn like mage and barbarian
Do you mean for playing or for the little sticker next to your name

If you're new then you could choose the new to dnd sticker
The icon next to your name doesn't mean anything in terms of the server, and you can always choose it later by visiting id:customize.
Not a decision you need to make now, or ever, in fact.

Just a fun optional thing.
Hi. Can anyone recommend a discord server for D&D beginners in the North West of UK?
There's a server called Dungeons & Dragons UK of pretty decent size. You can find it through Discord's Explore Discoverable Servers function. I don't know how beginner-friendly they are or if they're in the right geography for you, but it's a start!
Thank you! Any help is appreciated 🙂 cheers x
IRL there are a few geek retreats in the NW that have good discords
Hey, Yeah i actually just messaged them at their Warrington branch. 🙂
can someone explain how rolling for stats works? ive read about that but i just dont get it somehow

The first question is: has your DM confirmed that you'll be rolling for stats?
im just wondering lmao
If you're just practicing, check out the blurb above! If you're getting stuck on any of the particular wording, let us know
Do you know what “4d6” means?
i have read about rolling the stats quite a few times somewhere else but i never really understood the wording but i think i got it from that
four six sided dice yeah?
Correct
So you roll 4 dice, and then ignore the lowest value. Add the top 3 together. That is one ability score. You do that 6 times to get all 6 scores. Then you can assign them where you think they will fit best. You don’t have to do them in order or decide which stat you’re rolling before you do the roll
yeah yeah alright
somewhere it was written like "roll 4d6 and drop the lowest one" and i was kinda lost what to do with the rest lol
Just another way of expressing what Colossus said. If someone rolls 5, 5, 3, and 1 they would add the highest 3 numbers (or, to put it another way, they drop the lowest roll, which is 1 in this example). What's left is your score.
thanks for the clarification guys
Hi
Hi
Im never play dnd before and I wanna learn
Hallooo
Theres a command to bring up a basics thing but I don't know it
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
Ooh ok thanks!
The command is ?new in case you want to use it in the future!
Thanks
Some useful commands in here for folk are:
- ** ?new** : brings up some resources for very beginners to introduce them to the game, such as the basic rules and a little introductory choose your own adventure.
- ?looking :This brings up directions to #find-a-game and explains what that channel is for.
- ?al : Briefly explains what Adventure League (Official Organised Play) is and links to AL channels here
- ?homebrew : Helps explain what the term homebrew means
- ?newDM : Helps give some tips on how to be a DM- You can also link them towards #dm-discussion where they can get even more DM advice
There's also a lot of helpful newplayer tags in this thread https://discord.com/channels/516367331358801950/1151572394008395796 that you can use to quickly bring up information to explain some things such as ?tag new + skills, roleplaying, race, proficiency, online, levelup, hp, dice, d20, cr, class, bg3, background, ac, abilities.
Thank you
Y'ellow there y'all! And thank you kindly for that help :3
can druids summon like monsters
Druids do have spells that can allow the to summon animal and fey beings
I don't know what a Mahoraga is, but you're definitely limited by your character's levels and abilities! Maybe keep "Get Revenge On The Mean Dragon" on your to-do list for a while and get back to it later.
i meaaaaaaaan
if i level up enough maybe i can transform into a dragon and fight him
That is a thing you can do yep! It takes a very high level spell though
As a druid, to transform into a dragon you would need access to the spell Shapechange, which is a 9th level spell, meaning the lowest level you can get access to that is at level 17
could i possibly convince anyone whos actually good at dnd to maybe like, make a character sheet for me? im scared ill mess it up
If you need any guidance or have any questions along the way, you are always more than welcome to ask them here.
Dndbeyond has a character sheet maker thing
yeah but im not about to pay 20 bucks to get the race and stuff that i want
The best way to understand what all the parts on the character sheet are is to go step by step and input them yourself!
I thought it was all free
Oh
Sorry
Unfortunately, no one here can 'give you' a character sheet that's filled out with all the content that you would normally have to purchase
This is the official Wizards of the Coast Dungeons and Dragons discord, after all.
fair point
That being said, if you can find a DM with all that content unlocked for sharing, they can share the info with you through DnD Beyond and you can access it all for free
mhm thank you
You can also buy them individually. The Centaur is $1.99 individually (which also deducts from the cost of the entire book if you ever decide to buy it whole) from https://www.dndbeyond.com/marketplace/sourcebooks/mordenkainen-presents-monsters-of-the-multiverse if you scroll down to the races section.

?NEWDM
- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.
- Learn how to be a Dungeon Master with this YouTube video or D&D Beyond article.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- Decide what kind of campaign you want to run. Here’s a few good options for new DMs.

using this for myself 😅
im gonna be running dragons of stormwreck isle, ive heard its very good for new DMS
Yeah that should be a good one for new to D&D folks!
i do have a lil question, how should i decide when i want to level up a PC?
So pre-written adventures often mention at what level the characters should be before starting a particular section.
So you can use that as a guide for when to allow level ups.
You can also chose to do something different - treat the pre-written modules more as useful guides than "have to follow everything down to every word."
this is really helpful! thanks
That particular adventure talks about level ups at the start of each chapter
yeah, im still reading it so far
Smart. It's wise to read the whole adventure before running it.
how do i calculate my initiative thing on my character sheet
i think its d20 and your dex?
Your initiative bonus is your dexterity modifier.
When asked to roll initiative you roll a d20 and add your intiiative bonus (again it's based on your dexterity modifier).
There may be other class features/bonuses that may also apply.
how do i get inspiration
You feel inspired
how do uou do hit points hit dice attacks and passive wisdom
Hit points are based on your class(es) and class levels. See the first couple of chapters of the free basic rules which explain this).
Hit dice are a pool of dice based on your hitpoint dice - you have so many dice based of the dice type determined by your class(es). You can use that pool to recover hitpoints during short rests. The pool recovers half of the expended hit dice per long rest.
Passive wisdom score is determined by 10 + your wisdom modifier
Its super worthwhile to read the rules
Yeha the first chapter goes through step by step how to create a character
oh also what are the best skills for a barbarian centaur
i struggle to focus when readinh the rules, idk if its adhd or what man
Take your time - the game will still be here. Also check out the Handbook Helper videos (see them linked in the messages pinned here in the channel)

^ or here
oh also what are the best skills for a barbarian centaur
There’s not really many “best” skills, they aren’t super impactful
Perception is always good tho, and barbs do get some benefits to athletics
Mostly just pick thematically imo
So like can someone explain to me how Spellcasting works? how do i calcute it how do i go about doing it im confused
What class are you? That's the first question
Cleric?
Dumb question, but if I’m attacking as a paladin do I add my strength modifier to my roll
I joined a campaign that has already been going for awhile so I had to level my character of to lvl 14
Also how do I roll for smite attacks
If you are attacking with a melee weapon, then yes you will in the majority of circumstances add your Strength Ability Modifier on top of the damage your roll on the dice
You make your attack roll as normal, and then after knowing whether you hit or miss, you can decide to use Divine Smite to roll some additional damage dice on top of those you would ordinarily roll for your melee weapon. You expend spell slots as the feature specifies when you do this
Any ideas for how I can make a pyromancer character?
hello
Probably could just go Sorcerer or Wizard with fire based spells
But #character-discussion would be better place to ask

The basics is that you have a number of spells available to you and a number of spell slots. Spell slots are like ammunition for your spells. Each spell and spell slot has a different level, and if you want to cast a spell you must expend a spell slot of the same level or higher
So say you’re a level 1 cleric, you’ll have 2 1st level spell slots and be able to prepare a number of spells equal to your level + your Wis mod, let’s say 4 in this example
Say you have spell A, B, C, and D prepared. They’d all be 1st level spells (those aren’t actual spell names, just using letters as standins to simplify things). You can spend a 1st level spell slot to cast any one of them once
You could spend both spell slots on the same spell, or you could spend them on any 2 different spells
Hey I'm new to the game and everything. Like I got the essential kit yesterday Lol. With the player sheets is there somewhere I can get more? Or do I have to like photo copy them and such? Probably a silly question but I have a few friends and family and the kit didn't provide enough 🤣
you can download more sheets here: https://dnd.wizards.com/resources/character-sheets
by clicking on the "5th Edition Character Sheets" link
Hello. Im new to DND and using the DND Beyond app. Im trying to use a Bard and try and have the best roleplaying experience. I need to decide what instruments are more popular, the more preferrable life style, etc. Please help me out.
which instrument you choose is pretty much purely an aesthetic choice
lifestyle doesn't come up much at all in my experience
@fleet field thank you 😊
Alr. I can send you my current character sheer
is it an image or a link?
if it's a link it might be more useful to post it in #character-discussion so more people can reply
Im on phone and i dont rlly know how to send character sheets off the app
on the sheet, under "manage" there should be a button to get a sharable link
Where is manage 🧍♂️
somewhere near the character name I believe?
I found export to pdf
should be right by that
Found it. Thx
silly question, but when it says that something will take an amount of time ( for example getting to seagrow caves) would it actually take 3 hours of real time or what?
No in game time.
ITs all calculated and can go by pretty quick or go very slowly depending on what the characters are doing.
If you are traveling or doing downtime activity you can fast forwards and skip time.I
If you are roleplaying in a bar every minute of roleplay is a real minute in game ETC.
Time is fluid based on what is going on and whats happening.
If you go from the bar to the castle on the other side of town thats a 30 minute walk you just skip that 30 minutes and say "Now you have all arrived" and 30 minutes in game took 10 seconds ETC
thanks 🙏 that makes a lot more sense 😭
🙂
alright!
i feel like i’m prepared as a DM, just gotta finish up on this rule book and campaign book
Sometimes things may hinder that too. if your DM is like but wait. You have found yourself in an ambush surrounded by theives.
Then of course time goes back to real time
Is there a way to get notifications for a channel on this server, but not the entire server?
Yeah,
Mute each group of channels
then for the ones you want just unmute the specific channel
K will try thanks
Fun classes that are beginner friendly?
Cleric, Fighter, Barbarian, Warlock
Honestly whatever catches your interest and that you're good with spending some time diving into and learning.
Anyone else agree? Maybe paladin too dunno much about paladin.
I'd probably go barbarian, fighter, and rogue... then get into other classes
Wizard is a tough one for beginners tbh.
What do warlocks do?
They are bonded with some sort of magical creature or being (Sold your soul, made a pact, or some such) Low amout of spells to use at a time but BIG impactful uses of them.
Lots of customization and cool flavor.
Warlocks are a kind of spellcaster that have fewer spells but regain them after a short rest.
Spellcasting can add another level of complexity to player options that can feel overwhelming for new players.
But if you like slinging spells, warlocks aren't bad.
10/10 reccomend them. They are one of my favorites.
And don't feel like you can't do a spellcaster because you're new - if it's something that interests you and you're passionate about learning it, you can do fine with a spellcasting class.
They get Eldritch Invocations Which are extra abilties like being able to change your appearence at will. See through any sort of darkness at long distance, go invisible once perlong rest. free speaking with animals ETC.
Lots and lots of cool features and they are very customizable to be kinda whatever you want
Oh ok
Alot of classes are pretty ridgid and not very customizable past their subclass and maybe spells taken. Warlock for sure gives a ton of variety
No 2 warlocks will be the same.
Not to say any class cant be customized to fit a character or story. Warlock just gives a lot of really unique things
What’s the difference between a barbarian and a fighter?
Barbarians have the largest hit dice (so typically get lots of hit points) and can rage (which may help reduce damage and give damage bonuses).
Barbarians "rage" which gives them a lot of resistances and they are tanky and do a lot of big damage hits.
Fighter has some more customization and lots of attacks per turn. very versitile.
You can get a bit of a feel of the different classes here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes
The dice gods were not on my side tonight
I got stunned and failed my save like 5 times in a row
being stunned can certainly impact things
well I hope that it was still a fun D&D game despite being stunned and failing some saves
And I have a -1 wis modifier lol
It was fun anyway
It was interesting seeing how the rest of the party got out of the situation
One disadvantage to me being in an adventurers league game is that we’re in the same room as a few other games going on so it can be hard for me to hear the dm sometimes
OOF
The DC was 15 so I basically had to roll a 16+
Thank you both of you for helping me out 👍
Also when u say customization do u mean rp-wise?
I just got a wand of lightning bolts does that mean I can cast a level 9 lightning bolt by expending all 7 charges?
Yup.
That's what it do say.
Hey I'm new to DnD. I wanna make a character but the thing is, my favorite thing in the world is Poison and Poison playstyles
Can Poison be done in this game?
Yeah for sure, any character can take the Poisoner Feat to make and use poisons more effectively
It is in Tasha's Cauldron of Everything tho, so you'd need to buy that book...
I just want to do a more Poison focused playstyles. Oh sick word?
There's also a fair few spells that deal Poison damage, and inflict the Poisoned condition which may also interest you
added links to the above for you
Is there any way i could send a picture of my current character sheet to see if it's properly made? Its my first time making one without help, point buy
No mechanics wise.
Any class has a ton of customization RP wise
(Or if somebody could just help me in dms)
idk if this is even the right channel for that
yeah feel free to post a link to it in #character-discussion
Cant really post a link.. it was made in ibis paint-
