What exactly are you looking for in your first character?
I’m trying create a character that would be easy for me to roleplay and would help me learn the basics of dnd
So if you’re starting out you want to be someone that doesn’t really cast spells. Like you want to pick fighter, monk, barbarian or rogue,
Go with the human race first since that’s the most relatable
Got it
Whatever sounds most interesting to you of those 4 to roleplay is what you would initially pick. I picked the monk for my character since he doesnt really use weapons or armor
Another question, do you have a backstory for this character yet?
I was thinking of making them a character that was banished from their “group” because of a mistake that resulted in the death of a leading family member. They travel, searching for a way to redeem themselves and be accepted back into their “group”.
Okay so this sounds best for a rogue. They could’ve been in a gang and your character ended up making a costly mistake of leaving their best friend’s father mortally wounded. They got exiled from this gang and now they look for sophisticated yet clever deeds for a rogue to be accepted back into the gang
I mean it could work for any class
Those classes are easier, but spellcasters are certainly doable if that’s what you want
Hey guys my first time playing d and d I've been asked to join an established group within my local warhaming club I mainly play 40k do got the hand book got 2 weeks but I'm struggling to get to grips etc I want to make a human paladin but I need to start at level 4 is anyone able to help me make a character sheet with me make a massive help
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
After you read the rules and/or watch th
I have read the handbook first 4 chapters etc just struggling with how to add it to the sheet etc
Btw konnor why a human.
Always liked the thought of being a crusader knight fits my personality hahah
Kingdom of heaven vibes etc
I mean you can be a crusader knight and not be human though so still confusing
Got told human is a good base to start from
I was assuming some sort of stats bonus or thing related to the human race is why
Like tieflings have fire resistance
have you tried beyond, or using paper or which
Paper
personally i'd recommend beyond.
Please don't judge which race and class people choose to play.
Beyond is so much better imo plus you can just print it out once you finish it
basic rules are free, phone app, and it does all the math and leg work for you
There's no wrong race/class combo.
Who was judging I was simply asking why for depth/insight 💀
Cause every race has Stat bonuses I didn't know if human was good for cleric or not
I have beyond and have printouts in emergencies in case of phone/laptop death
Tried to use the app I just got a little overwhelmed it the starting at level 4 that confusing me
I could try and help walk you through it if you'd like?
oh its ok. if you feel comfy you can PM me and I can walk you hrough it
Start your character at level 1 and once you get that down then add additional levels.
or jackie or anyone. personally i do point buy for ability scores. 15/15/15/8/8/8. it's certainly a choice
Standard array is what most dms use or point buy its between the two tbh rarely see rolled dice used which is odd
My tiefling bard salutes this
true yeah. consistency is usually better than feelbads either way of "oh one person is insanely OP and everyone is average" or "everyone else is average nd one person is 6/6/7/8/9/10"
Tiefling bard sounds fun ngl
True this lol
Thx for help I'd appreciate a step by step help for my first time.etc
Me or mlouden03 would gladly help if you'd like
She's a blast...is there not a "share link to sheet" on beyond mobile? I'll link her from my PC if I have to 😂
There should definitely be a share link before you click the character to go into depth of em or it might be inside of that
So far pretty cool ngl
Went lock for some damage, my kiddos were giving me shit for "not helping"
Hey
Bard and warlock is pretty smart
Just use vicious mockery on one of em 💀

My 5yo playing a barbarian literally scoffed at me when I rolled a 1 for dmg the first time on mockery
💀 now I just feel bad ngl
Thanks!
If you want, DM me. I can help you with some stuff
It's so hard finding a vanilla campaign to join 😔
Hii!
Welcome
Hru
Doing fairly well.
Are you new to the hobby?
What have you tried so far?
I've been checking out forums and the #looking-for-players channel. Idk how to find local games, so I've just been trying online ones
Not new to playing, but new to dm-ing. Only campaign I ever tried to run crashed and burned
but wanting to give it a shot so found this server😅
I’ve played in 2 or 3 campaigns before
Head on over to #dm-discussion for DMing advice.
Kk! Thanks

The biggest challenge to finding a campaign to join is that there will always be more DMs than players out there simply because for every campaign you'll have 4-6 players per 1 DM. Additionally a common pitfall players fall into is making a post and waiting for a DM and a group to come to them.
That said there are certain avenues that I often recommend people do to help finding a compatible campaign and that is when responding to forums or making a post you can mention.
- Your general availability
- How much time you want to commit in a campaign.
- What expectations you have for a campaign.
- Mention your preferences towards exploration, combat, or roleplaying.
Have you tried Adventurers League @static scaffold ?
Not yet. I feel like it'd be less casual than what I'm looking for. I might give it a try
try AL?
The D&D Adventurers League is an ongoing official campaign for Dungeons & Dragons. It uses the fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons rules, and features the Forgotten Realms setting. You can play D&D Adventurers League games literally anywhere. Players use the fifth edition rules to create a character and bring that character to games anywhere D&D Adventurers League play is happening.

We have several channels to discuss Adventurers League play:

i mean in some ways yes and no.
Not casual in that there are more "hard and fast rules" and less "shrug ask your DM" (but that's still a part of it at times)
But it IS casual in that you can change character class/race/etc, go from AL table to table etc
It's definitely worth trying out.
I enjoyed it because it sticks to rules as written, which made it easier to learn as I played.
What helped me was that AL games where are rather easy to find and I only had to worry about my availability to apply for games posted.
Eventually as I continued to play, I continued to bump into some of the same players who's availability matched my own.
From those, I reached out to the ones I enjoyed playing with and we began to play a home campaign together.
also you're a pretty good DM, yourself, and you helped me think more about disability inclusivity in my games when I DM (I hope mentioning that is not out of turn since you've done seminars of sorts on the subject)
The key take away I want to highlight is by actively interacting with the community, you'll have multiple opportunities to get to know different DMs and Players whose preferences, availability, and playstyles are compatible with your own.
This will help you form a longer term DM group that has a much higher chance of success because it will be with people you have established history with.
It's fine to mention it, I'm currently building an updated version of that original presentation.
I'll make sure to give it a try. Care to point me in the right direction so I can find some posted games?
In this server in particular: https://discord.com/channels/516367331358801950/1050206572535623690 has some postings covering the full upcoming month of March.
Though keep in mind there are guidelines you need to follow for creating an AL character. The adventure league player guide can be found in the dnd website: https://dnd.wizards.com/adventurers-league
If you have any questions #adventurers-league will help you out.
Thank you, thank you
AL scares me, as a filthy casual
Why’s that?
Random question
is it possible to attack someone who is on death savin throw status
as in knock them while they're down
Its made for casuals…
Yes.
Alright
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#DeathSavingThrows
Damage at 0 Hit Points. If you take any damage while you have 0 hit points, you suffer a death saving throw failure. If the damage is from a critical hit, you suffer two failures instead. If the damage equals or exceeds your hit point maximum, you suffer instant death.
thats cool
Also this is a very odd question where the answer could be "if the dm allows it" or if there are actual rules for it
if you have shock grasp and your party member is like on death saving throw status
would it be possible to use shock grasp as a form defibrillator to jump-start your party member's heart (with the obv caviat of like high dc needed for it)
By the rules, all you'd do is make them fail death saves because shocking grasp does damage
So it would very much be an
ah ok
You’d probably make them fail two because any attack at that range that hits an unconscious creature is a crit.
What with the "adherence to the rules," and so forth
That, and like... assuming the death save is caused by damage that a re-started heart would fix
So, decapitation and so forth are right out
I mean, if you've been decapitated, you're probably already dead
Well yeah. Still have to do the throws? Maybe? I've never managed to play long enough to die.
Generally speaking, once you're dead, you're dead
Death saving throws are only when you're at zero but still alive
And that distinction is probably important for new folks.
I think the distinction between dead and not dead is probably important for most people 😁
Dnd isnt a reality simulator, so keep that in mind m. Spells do what they say, thats it
Zero HP usually means dead, is what I'm saying. Not "not quite dead."
Not for player characters in 5e. 0 hp usually just means unconscious
Hello
Welcome!
wait shocking grasp is ranged?
i was not aware
Its range is “touch”.
And the Unconscious condition says:
Any attack that hits the creature is a critical hit if the attacker is within 5 feet of the creature.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/appendix-a-conditions#Unconscious
Hey how are you
tired but good. had work today and trying to character create
What are you creating? A Druid I assume
something like that. its for a comic. im making a moon druid of sorts
That sounds kinda cool
thank you!
I dm’d you if that’s ok
Idm I’m just dozing off. Kinda sleepy
I get it ! Should probably get some sleep!
Yea
HMU if you want later!
For sure!
is there a difference between the druidic focus options given when starting as a druid?
hey i want to play a game of dnd. but i also want to be a animal character. a cat with a elementall spell? magical cat? is there any option to make that? and i think thats homebrew right?
You can't play animals.
There are animal-like playable races like tabaxi (aka cat-people).
Learn the rules of the game before you homebrew.
you cant play as a cat
It's just flavour.
the closest is probably tabaxi
cool
hey guys I'm new to being a DM and was reading lost mines of phandelver to get some ideas on my campaign. Was this book always free?
so could i be a druid and play as a cat the whole time? but would that allow magical spells or etc?
It was free on D&D Beyond until last year.
If you want DMing advice head on over to #dm-discussion
wow I still have access though XD
You can play as a druid that wildshape into a cat but you don't get to use your druid abilities, including spellcasting in your animal form, nor can you speak.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/classes#WildShape
How do I start making a character
Yes, it’s not too rare for campaigns to go to level 20
Have a look at the basic rules, linked in the pinned messages of this channel
(Although most don’t)
@weak hamlet you wanna chat with me I can help you build a character
Playing a new game tomorrow actually
Sure
can i play
could you be more specific as to what you're asking?

ohh ok ok
Anyone got a good youtube tutorial to help learn being a dm and a player? my group wants to get into it but none of us have ever played
Druids can wildshape into cats, but you can’t wildshape “all the time” - you get a certain amount of time you can be in wildshape, a certain amount of times per day. The amount of time increases as you level up. But you wouldn’t want to be in wildshape the whole time as you can’t communicate, and you can’t cast spells while wildshaped. You could, however, play a tabaxi (cat-like) druid that wildshapes into a cat by preference. I think that’s the closest you’d get.

tysm i wanna try but ngl im kinda dumb
As a new group one thing to remember is that you don't need to memorise the rules. The ones you'll want to look over as they're more complicated are creatings a character and combat rules, but most click into place as you play. You can make characters together, and maybe run a single mock combat to get a feel for things.
Your players can also help you remember things. They can remember how their character works, and help remind you of other rules, so don't feel like it's all on you to learn the rules. You can rely on each other.
Head to #dm-discussion for DMing advice.
peril in pine brook free starter with loads of hints tips free adventure for new players (it’s aimed at younger players) but it’s got lots of tips and stuff in it to get you going
Peril in pinebrook is a very simple tutorial adventure to learn how to DM and play. But it is meant for younger audiences and simplifies some rules. Otherwise a starter module like Lost mines of Phandelver (old starter kit adventure), Dragon of Stormwreck Isle (current starter kit adventure) or Dragon of Icespire Peak (current essentials kit adventure) can help you get started
Jinx lol
eeey
tysm all of you

Does anyone know a bot that works well without dnd beyond?
I don’t wanna pay just to use the character I already made outside of beyond (war cleric domain costs money)
But if I don’t use it avrae doesn’t work
I have a GM who uses Dice Maiden. It won't integrate with your character, but it will at least let you roll dice
Ahh. Avrae still lets you roll dice
But it doesn’t do any other calculations I think
Try asking in #third-party someone lurking there might have some ideas
To use the built-in automation, you’d need to either buy the subclass on D&D Beyond ($1.99) or have it shared with you through a campaign.
Alternatively, you could write the automation for it yourself for free.
hi, i only know dnd through watching playthroughs of other people on youtube and have been very interested with playing it myself with other people- i know next to nothing about anything with how this works but am willing to learn.
is there good starting point i can work with?
This probably
In my opinion the best method to learn DnD is finding an experienced DM and just playing
let me take a look

I have
my brain can't comprehend it at the very least, i think im just tired
update: still looking at the basic rules lol
Hello
My first ever dnd session got cancelled
Which means it may be hosted on the week of my birthday
A birthday surprise! sorry a session got cancelled.. its like a weird rite of passage for playing D&D. Scheduling monster
i need to take a rest with reading the rules, my head is unable to process information atm.
too much info to process 😵💫
that is totally ok. No one expects folks to get it all right away. There are also little videos like Handbooker Helper that can break concepts down for you.
Sometimes having knowledge through different forms of media (written, video, audio) can really help
i started reading the rules 3 hours ago and is just almost done with the ch.2 races, the contents of the basic rules look really daunting at first but its fun to read the rules out, makes me excited for the first dnd playthrough i will have (hopefully).
also, i'll give the handbooker helper a try- thanks for that!
i might also have to get myself a notebook where i can write down little notes for myself regarding the rules and such, it might also help.
My first players handbook has a ton of post it flags on the sections I kept having to reference. Like equipment, some spells, leveling.
They are still there to this day
i'm currently saving up to get my very first players handbook, really excited for it.
for now, a little tiny notebook will suffice...
about to run my first ever campaign in half an hour, any advice would be appreciated !!
Use #dm-discussion 😉
But joking aside, focus on fun. You're all playing a game together - make sure it's fun for everyone (you inlcuded).
Also you don‘t have to know every ability of every race and class you‘re not even playing. This will save you a lot of time
hello guys, im pretty new to dnd and im just asking what could be a good campaign for beginners ? (DM and players)
The one found in the Starter Set.
Or LMoP if you have access on beyond from when it was free

How was your first time experience with D n D?
Hello there, first timer here.
Looking to get into DnD.

For perspective, my game started with my wife wanting to play, asking around friends of ours who might be interested, and then me agreeing to be the DM and researching good online platforms - specifically Roll20 to start, and we later moved to Foundry. Part of our motivation for starting it was one of the couples in our friend group was about to go long distance, and this was our way of giving them something to do socially together through that period.
hi, hello im new to dnd and i created 2 characters and im not really sure if they would work and also i dont 100% know how to fill out the character sheet. Would anyone be willing to hop in a voice chat with me to help me a bit ?

yeeah i dont have the money to buy all the books on dnd beyond i have my sheet in roll 20
Did you make it on dnd beyond?
If so, you can post it on #character-discussion to get feedback on it.
I will note , you don’t have to buy all the books to play or any books.
The site comes with the free basic rules. Everything else is just extra.
You can also make an imgur gallery to share screenshots.
i mean i understand that but the character i really wanted to make was a Kobold rune knight and i didnt even know which books i would have to get for that.
Might be the easiest way to deal wiht a roll20 sheet, as I am not sure if you can direct link to them
wow that's amazing
im gonna convert my sheet to png and then upload it to imgur gimme a minute
You could just buy the kobold race and rune knight individually.
Total for that would be about $5 USD
atm money is reall tight so i will probably buy that stuff as soon as i can but rn its not possible. :c
Plus given that you’ll likely start level 1, you don’t have to pick up the subclass yet.
i got the imgur gallery
You can post the link here or perhaps better in #character-discussion
somehow the bio doesnt show up. :/ i might as well just sit down and redo it on dnd beyond. gonna get money soon
Deos anyone want to play dnd with me
Check #find-a-game
How did you arrive at your stats?
rolled for them
4d6 and only leave the lowest out
got an 18 and kobolds get +2 in dex the wiki said
While it's presented as the "main option" in the rules, the reality is kinda the opposite. People only roll for stats when DMs ask them to, and even then it's tightly controlled.
Use Standard Array or Point buy.
oh okay
You are also using a homebrew background. It doesn't look unbalanced, but it might be something a DM picks up on.
Urchin would be a canonical alternative that might be close thematically.
that was the idea of the character, he basically got locked in a crate that was sent to a tribe of goliaths and they took a liking to him. thats why i would also go rune knight since it would be taught to me by them
and the idea of a 3ft kobold growing to large is really funny to me
Hey guys how are you
My point isn't that it's bad, it's that it's homebrew, and so its something you would need to make a case for when presenting the sheet to a DM.
Hello!
Giant Foundling is the official background that is literally "adopted by giants"
But that's from a setting book, so also would be a discussion with a DM.
I'm a little experienced I know a little bit of the basics
huh that seems interesting
Feel free to ask any questions 🙂
My mistake, it's not an adventure, it's Bigby Presents: Glory of the Giants which is a giant-themed sourcebook.
okay im gonna wait till i got some money and tinker a bit around. afterwards just talk to my dm and walk through if it would work or not.
if i have a dm till then
That's the hard part.
wdym ? is finding a dm that hard ?
Yes, there are more people who want to play D&D than want to DM it.
i might add, ive never played dnd. i just got into it because of baldurs gate and i binge watched critical role.
hmh
That's a fairly common entry route.
So uh I just need someone to teach =>
The most surefire way to get playing is to have a group of likeminded friends, and have one take on being DM. It's not very hard, and you don't need to have played before, but it's a very different set of responsibilities and it is more work than being a player.
i guess thats why paid games are a thing.
The pinned posts have starting materials
???
hmh, guess ill just have to get lucky in finding a dm. gonna be hard otherwise without friends. anyway thanks for your help. 🙂 ill look more into stuff and buy some things on dnd beyond

Oh ok
Hello!! I'm brand new to D&D. Never played and joined today to learn and get started. Does anyone know any games for new players maybe something half speed or basic for players who need to learn?
For now just start with the things from the basic rules.
In terms of stats, use standard array or point buy because if you want to go that route, you'll have to roll them with the DM.
Welcome to the hobby
The bot post above will help you get started with the basics.

Thanks just saw it doing the introductory demo now
I downloaded Character Keep last night to make my first character but I got confused by traits and feats. Also made an elf and gave him common speak but it look like elves already know common speak. Is that true? If so I can change it to a third language for him.
Elves start with Common and Elvish. You only get additional languages if your Background grants it.
what does "other modifier" and "override score" mean when creating a character?
@vivid umbra just as a head's up, the server does not allow AI images or promotion of AI products due to their dubious training references (using copyright works to train their bots and make images)

oh damn, that's a lot
Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
After you read the rules and/or watch the tutorial videos, feel free to ask questions here.
Creating a character means nothing if you don't know the rules of the game.
I'm trying to make a necromancer
There's a school of necromancy wizard subclass. If you want more in-depth discussion for your options to make a character like that, you should post in #character-discussion.
Assuming you’re using D&D Beyond, those are typically used for temporary changes to your ability scores that occur during gameplay. If you’re still creating your character, just leave those blank.
so how do i play, i wanna play it looks fun but everytime i tried i always dont end up playing dnd so how do i play as dungeon master of player?
Welp i spent some time on creating my first character, now to find my first adventure x'D

alright thanks
ah, okay thank you
holy shit, my character is gonna be so edgy
Sounds like fun.
It does I originally put common as my secondary language thinking I only knew elvish.
My character was going to have a human friend as a child who was the only non elf he ever met and learned it from them.
The character creator I used said I could know 2 additional languages, have 2 starting tools or 1 of each. I picked one of each. I picked 1 of each and got a cooking set so I could cook at night for the party while they sleep since I only need 4 hours of "sleep" a night. Now I gotta figure out what my third language will be or pick a new tool. Any recommendations?
You could wait to until after you join a campaign to make that decision.
Depending on the campaign setting the relevance between languages and tools vary.
Languages are flavor, they dont matter unless your dm wants thm to be bc it is setting specific.
Oh good I kinda blanked when I saw languages I've never heard of as my choices. I was just gonna trade it for thieves tools. So I think I'll just do that. But I do think it would be cool to have a conversation with a dragon.
It's dm's choice of flavor but they can give dragons common language
I did watch some stuff on YouTube where one of the PCs changed form to a dragon and could no longer communicate with the party because of it.
Most dragons do know common by their statblocks. But DMs can change that kind of thing
It is better to learn the rules by going to them directly: what spell or feature was used to make this transformation and what does it say about communication ? That is the takeaway
I'm looking at the backgrounds and traits in the d&d beyond now. Gonna learn more about my character first. Like I just found out elves don't really need sleep so I am curious how that works in long rests. Also trying to find out if they need to eat regularly or is there something about their diet as well.
You don't NEED to eat regularly but if you don't after like 3 days you gain exhaustion
Effectively, elves finish a long rest in four hours instead of eight.
And then the rest is usually spent keeping watch while you wait around for everyone else.
Pretty please tell me a kobold fact I don't know
Uh… “kobold” is German for “goblin”?
They reproduce faster than almost any other race
Can I use the extra 4 hours to keep watch and cook at the same time?
Probably
I'd say it's up to the dm
Yeah, the rules don’t explicitly cover that scenario.
We talkin bout stirring a stew pot every 15 minutes or manning a hibachi grill?
hello
But you CAN cook if they allow it along with whatever food items you have
Rations sucks tho
I just wanted to start out dnd, anything to know before hand (zero knowledge...)
Check the Rule Books (free) on DnD beyond
thank you
If you pay 30 dollars you can get the Player's Hand Book
Hallo, fellow travelers! I know a bit about D&D but the one thing I came here is possibly to gain a better understanding on the die part-
I didn't even consider cooking different things having any different effect but I could see the how their could be different outcomes like being distracted or attracting what ever may be hungry.
Homebrew it and make your party walk 10ft faster for an hour or have a con save +1
For like 10 minutes

Is there a resource that better explains die? When it comes to numbers, I tend to struggle, yet I won't want it to hinder my gameplay. I've gathered a wide variety of explanations, however they all seem- over the place?
I downloaded an app called Dice and it has all the dice you need it's free and can be used. I played with all the different dice last night and learned a lot.
Do you have an image of the app? Just so I make sure what it looks like.
Thank you for the aid! I wasn't aware there was an app for that.
d20 is like the default dice.
There's other types - d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, d100.
d100 is usually when you roll for a big table (e.g. a random encounter table - this is something that DMs use).
While the other dice types are often for damage or healing or anything similar like bardic inspiration
Me neither never even hel a D20 now I understand how d1000 works
So, if you're told to make a Medicine skill check for example, you'd roll a d20 and add your Medicine bonus.
Then if your DM says "DC 10", that means you have to roll 10 or higher total (including modifier) on your d20. It doesn't mean roll a d10.
any help with what to do?
Tried to post didn't have permission just type d&d dice app in search should be one of the first to pop up
What is your question about dice? How to know which to use?
This is the first concise explanation of dice I've seen yet, danke. Now, so, are the other types linked to anything specifically?
I ask since I'm confused on the other die, for example I'm in a session Rn with my monk. I often hear ' roll for damage ' and its either d8 or d4, which really throws me off. Not only are numbers a big struggle so is my memory, so I'm attempting to find a method that is simple enough to remember.
I was curious about that myself but I figured the DM could help with that or maybe just keep a guide handy until I know myself.
Precisely, my party/dm frequently explain but its all at once and in different ways. I feel discouraged for not understanding it, which is why I'm here.
The dice for damage is determined by your class features and is something written on your character sheet
what die you roll for damage depends on what's inflicting the damage
d4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 are all used for damage
Wait i dont know what is the question? Do you have a character sheet?
I'm thinking on how to word it without being confusing.
I have an outdated sheet, which I need to upgrade.
Which dice to use isn’t something that is figured out in game
Your character sheet should be filled out before the game
I suppose my question is, why do they change?
I'm either told to use a d8 or a d4, then something else for damage.
Oh, I see.
I watched a critical role one shot last night and they were rolling some crazy stuff but I started to understand like 12d6 is actually 12 dice
What weapon are you using? Or is it a spell?
Because different features, weapons or spells affect what dice is used
yeah. the number before the d is the number of dice, and the number after is the sides on the dice
I have a monk, which I primarily use unarmed strikes.
what level?
a low level monk will be rolling d4s for damage
Then you use the dice for your level of monk
11.
that would use a d8 then iirc
This seems less like a “dice” question, and more of a “how your class works” question
yeah level 11 monks use d8s for unarmed strike damage
Well, I don't feel judged here so thank you for being so understanding and helpful.
I wasn't aware that was an application, I shall indeed to a deeper reading.
What judgment? We’re trying to send you to the right direction
Before the game, review your character sheet with your DM with the monk class description on hand
he's saying we aren't judging
Have your DM double check the sheet and agree on what your attack/damage rolls should be
Thank you very much.
Did you find the app?
Not yet, I'll see now.
You could share it in #character-discussion if you want to show it off or get feedback. You could look for a game to join in #find-a-game. You could brush up on the rules. There’s no right or wrong answer here.
What do want to do next?
I'm new too haven't started playing yet and now I know what the dice look like and didn't even have to go buy them.
Is it called RPG simple dice? Its the first that pops up.
Hold on I'll see if I can screenshot
more like, how do you actually play exactly

D&D in a nutshell:
- The DM describes the situation. They control the world and everyone in it except for the players.
- Each player controls one character (typically). Each person describes what they want their character to do.
- If needed, dice are rolled (to determine success/failure).
- The DM describes the results.
Even though it's make-believe, the rules provide a shared framework among players and DM so that you don't get situations like this: "Well, my Awesome Armor of Awesome can't be hit." "Yeah, well, this bad guy has a special ability that negates Awesome items."

Hello 👋
Yo
How can I make an online session to play with my friends
Or where can I go to make one
You can use Roll20 and DnD beyond! Both (mostly) free! Dnd Beyond is great for sheets (some things cost, like books) and roll 20 it’s a good virtual table top that’s free to use. I personally use discord for VCs and A music bot if you want background ambience. <33
But it’s all up to preference. Those those two have been the easiest for me to learn. <33
Ok thanks a lot
If you have any other questions my dms are always open ❤️
For DMing advice head to #dm-discussion
For online tools head to #third-party
For maps head to #dnd-maps
I’ve never been interested in being dm but thanks
Someone has to be the DM, if not you then one of your friends.
is there like a type of campaign where you can play js when you want to? its because i have a really complicated schedule and the campaigns where its on a fixed time every week/month doesnt really work for me
there's westmarches
Hi guys I don’t know what detain characters are good for can you all help me?
Sorry *what certain characters do *
What are you interested in playing? A martial, spellcaster, a hybrid of martial and caster, etc?
what are those?
I want to play with my friend who wants a close up fighter and I want to be able to do damage but also buff my friend is that possible?
Cleric?
westmarches are typically discord servers that specialize in games that allow you to play whenever you want, in play-by-post style all the tiem and then they generally have randomly scheduled voice games

ahh, and im guessing i can find them in #looking-for-community ?
I just wanted to learn from you guys and not have to watch anything
Check out those links
probably. you can also just search 'westmarches' on disboard
there's a ton of them on discord
D&D is a game of rules. Read the rules.
The tutorial rules makes it easier to digest.
Ok
What is "open D&D"?
alright, tysm!
np!
That didn’t do shit
probably referring to an open game where anyone can join
It told me to do NOTHING OF what I was asking
what were you asking, arent you just asking how to play the game?
I wanted to know what characters there are and what they all do
yeah, that link will tell you exactly that
Just read the Basic Rules.
Can we just get in a vc because it would be easier to explain
i think you havent looked around this server, what vc are you trying to even get into?
I don’t want you to I just want to know WHAT THEY ALL DOOOOOO
Ohh
There is no vc
Please just explain what each race is and what it is good at
dndbeyond explains it all too
if you cant read through or sit through a video you're gonna struggle a bit
Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
After you read the rules and/or watch the tutorial videos, feel free to ask questions here.
dnd is a game of freedom, but it only as free as the rules allow it, and if you dont know the rules, you'll have to eventually
we can't sit here and read the rules to you
We can't give one-on-one tutorials to every single person who joins because there are dozens of new people every day.
you can only get so far half-assingi it
These are BASIC rules this is the dictionary
Again, the four chapters are for character creation. That's what you should concern yourself over for now.
But why is it so looooonnnnnngggg
It is a game of rules.
because it's a complicated game full of complicated rules
You're playing a game where reading is part of the game.
Is there a summery or a video I can watch
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
I am not good at reading ok
I responded to you already to watch the tutorial videos.
Ok
ah! but i think i'd still love to know them regardless, i'll see.
Hey
Hi
Hoo boy
I kinda new to dnd and would actually like help learning the game
also @astral lodge please visit your local library
lots of good resources/novels/etc to learn basic fantasy stuff
@random haven You can get started from this helpful tips of resources!
it's worked great for my kids
Thx
Thank you all for telling me this channel I’m on video 5
I know what I want to be
I WANT TO BE A CLERIC
oh geez
What’s wrong with being a cleric
Nothing.
How did I just do that
What’s that picture mean
Why is there link worst stats in areas
Is there like worst stats in some areas
Is there any games for new comers to dnd or how would I find a game that would help newer players out ?
Check #find-a-game
Wdym by some areas?
It’s a reaction, it lets you react to a message with an emoji
Btw if you want to be a front line fighter a Paladin may be a better option
Like your ability scores
Which ones you need depends on your class
A cleric wants to max out Wis, then have at least 14 con, and either 15 Str or 14 dex
Ok so max out wisdom then strength then dex that’s it
A weapon focused Paladin wants to max out Str (generally), have at least 14 con, and a good bit of Cha
I’m saying those are my highest ones in order
Read this again, carefully this time
What’s con
Constitution
Each class has a primary ability stat you want to focus on while some have a secondary. All classes should have a good Con score to have more hit points.
Str = Strength
Dex = Dexterity
Con = Constitution
Int = Intelligence
Wis = Wisdom
Cha = Charisma
Constitution is your overall health, stamina, endurance, etc.
Oh the video just said it means heath and stamina
Ability Stats With Tomato
Strength is being able to crush a tomato.
Dexterity is being able to dodge a tomato.
Constitution is being able to eat a bad tomato.
Intelligence is knowing a tomato is a fruit.
Wisdom is knowing not to put a tomato in a fruit salad.
Charisma is being able to sell a tomato based fruit salad.
tomatoes are great
Bc they’re a generally useful analogy
No grapes are great tomatoes are toes
can anyone help me make a character that can talk to animals please
Ranger, druid
Anything that can cast Speak With Animals
Both of those classes get spells to talk to animals
both or just one of them
Nature cleric can as well
Either can do it individually
The beauty of new optional rules is that race can be mostly for flavor (ability score-wise)
Racial traits are still unique though
oh ok
Like Tieflings can't get Fey Touched
But you can use the optional ability score increases to have a tiefling with +2 WIS, which druids and rangers need
fey touched is a feat
anyone can take it
do you mean fey ancestry or whatever it is eladrin get?
am i supposed to know what these things are
Nope 😂
this is my 1st dnd character
Each race has specific features, but can (with new optional roles) have whatever ability score increases you want
i havent even played it yet
So race and class aren't as linked as they used to be
ok
Classes are focused on certain ability scores, and races used to have locked in bonuses to those scores, making certain races less-optimal for certain classes.
Hope that makes sense
i mean kinda
For rangers/druids (talking to animals), wisdom (WIS) is a key ability score.
So as far as picking a race to be one of those classes, look at the individual features the race gets, not the "base ability score increases"
At least Common.
That depends™️
The playable race will say which language(s) you know.
whats the most common
That is a depended on who you wanna talk to. Or if you want to be able to have private side conversations with fellow party members.
Common
Thank you, !!
And yeahhh, first ever playing D&D is an adventure by itself hehe !!
dosent say common
don't most races natually come with common - becasue it's common?
i think i do
Which race did you choose?
ok so what other language should i speak
Hello!
Hiii
ima pick gnomish
For a genasi, Elemental? Also depends on what background/etc, or the campaign setting
goblin or orc would be more fitting imo - I've never come across gnomes in any of my campaigns tbh
but gnomes all know common so
so i should pick goblin
yee
ty
is there a race that can change itself to different animal
Druid class
Wild Shape
Ability
okie thank you
so if im a ranger do i have to worry about my strength
Are you just making a character or do you have a campaign you're in?
im making a character
It can be yeah
Do you have any other components of the character you have in mind other than talking to animals?
Background gives you extra things like skills and languages.
idk i guess it would be cool if like he like lives in the forest alone or something
Hermit
Sounds like the Hermit background.
is a background
ok
Backstory helps flesh out your character's history before they started become an adventurer.
Or Outlander
ill pick that ty
i think i have to buy it on dnd beyond
ill figure something out
Absolutely get the PHB if you can, at the very least
i have 5 dollars on my desk thats all the money i got
mood
Or, and this is crazy talk, use pencil and paper and go to your local library and get sourcebooks
Which is also something I do, as I am also poor 😂
Especially for adventure books
my hands are extremly shakey and i have dyslexia hand writing is off the table
I also got my D&D start at the library.
Fillable PDFs also exist. The ones you download from Beyond are editable
Every background has different features
what does folk hero do
If you select it, it will tell you
Gotta pick a background to "finish" the character, but like everything else you can change it later
ok ty
Hello, i'm new to D&D and i'm planning to learn the game to hold a D&D session with my family (as the DM)
Does anybody know any easy to use campaigns for a beginner DM like me?
Starter Set
I'm looking for people to play DnD with
That's the latest one. It's very simple for DMs and players.
Check #find-a-game
We plan to use D&D beyond to make the characters
That's fine. D&D Beyond is just a tool for character sheets and digital books.
Well I hope I can find some people to play with. Last year I tried finding a group and I was never able to find anyone :(
#find-a-game not familiar with the server but this might a good place to start
Dragons of stormwreck isle is good for teaching the basics, but is quite short, and works really best as something that leads into another campaign. The older starter set, with Lost Mines of Phandelver, is a bit more of a "full experience". The final one, the Essentials set, with Dragon of Icespire Peak, I don't think is so good for beginners, and is more for people who are coming over from other systems, like when they transitioned from 4e to 5e.
There's also popular third party adventures, like Wild Sheep Chase seems to be everyone's pick for best ultrashort first level 1 shot, but I have never played it.
Do u know where i can find the Lost Mines of Phandelver set
It's out of print but you may try to find it at hobby stores.
do I need to buy a book or a manual to play dnd? Im not looking to DM. I found a free pdf about 5e rules for players so am I good with just that or?

Silly newbie q, me n my partner have been playing bg3 and loving it, found out theirs a DND group at her work and I can join in, they are doing a new campaign in 3 weeks time, so we purchased the players handbook, monsters manual, Tasha's cauldron and Xanathers everything books. We are trying to work out all the information using the books and the DND app (the app isn't showing half of the races, glasses, subclasses}
The DnDBeyond app will only show and allow you to use those books materials that you own through DnDBeyond. Buying a physical book or buying digital access through Roll20 does not get you access to DnDBeyond’s books.
There are five ways to access content on D&D Beyond that you may have in your physical books
- Purchase the full book from the marketplace
- Purchase individual elements from the marketplace (options can be found within the book description)
- Purchase a digital/physical bundle from dndstore.wizards.com
- Join a campaign with someone who already owns the book where content sharing has been enabled
- Use the homebrew tools to copy the content from your physical book into D&D Beyond. Note: Do not publish any content copied in this way, it is for personal use only
We realised afterwards, as Ive recently got into Warhammer and so if you buy books you get a code to add to the 40k app, but nope....I don't think we will be buying those books again lol
Yeah sorry - it's best to decide up front which format you want to have the books in because once you buy it from a specific platform and format, that's what you have - buying the product in physical format does not get you access to digital format unless you buy the hybrid bundles from the WoTC online D&D store.
Well at least we know, we can go old school. Pen n paper lol
As a DM or a player?
you don't really need anything else for the first few times. You'r DM should explain you some rules when necessary and all you really need to know is covered by the basic rules
Yeah a lot of people complain about it. I personally prefer to have the books, and not get locked into the app ecosystem. You can still enter in content from the books you purchased as Private Homebrew: as long as its not set to public, there's no issue with it. But, it's a chore.
oh okkk thank u appreciate it
Looking for a group new to this
Hello Adventurers!
Hello!
What do you reccomand me to learn the basics?
Thank you!
Tip: If you use the Basic Rules, you don't have to read every abillity for every race and class, I'd recommend you to just pick a class and a race randomly (or if you like it) for you first game and only read that one!
Which will save you a lot of time
I'll do it. Anyway I read online that warlock is such a great class, do you agree with that?
I think almost every class i great, so if you feel like going with a warlock go with it!
Sure!
Or if you have time rn I can teach you a little if you like
Looking for group
Unfortunately today I'm really busy, I am sorry, but from Wednesday I'll completely free! In my free time I'll read the basic rules, and I'll follow your suggestion. Anyway thank you for the help!
Hey guys so im really new and i was wondering on how to get a outtake on how to play and stuff i also have issues with creating characters

Either you create the stuff homebrew
got it thank youu
Hello, I am Sanky and I just got into DnD through Baldur's Gate, I am looking for a way to learn and play DnD and try to get a feel for it. Are there any suggestions on where I should start and how?
.
I have read the rule and have a general understanding but would like to dive head first and learn all DnD has to offer
Probably then the best way is by playing or by getting the Players Handbook
go to #find-a-game
I am from India and dont have any games to attend physically
I did but it seemed too complicated, I got flustered
go to #looking-for-players and DM some of the DMs
OK thanks
I have a really good English accent
I have lived all over the world so my English is really good
#non-dnd-topics message for this awhile ago for a guy from India could help
I would prefer an online game for my first one
I want to know how to play before getting into it seriously
i DMd you
Hi, I am lost xD. I have never seen so much information at once.
If you have the Player’s Handbook, that explains how to play. Is there something in the book that was unclear, or a question you have that wasn’t answered by the book?
Just made my first level one character though.
Oooh! What’d you make?
Halfling Ranger
I dont think I can send a picture here
I was thinking I can learn by playing in a campaign, any suggestions where I can find one?
#find-a-game can point you toward the available groups.
I have seen SMOSH D&D campaign and was interested
And while it’s possible (and perhaps easier) to learn while playing, I will say that learning what you can up front can improve your odds of getting into a game.
At the very least, I’d recommend learning:
- these common terms
- what to do on your turn
- how your character’s own abilities work
how do you begin an online campaign? im sorry I am just completely new to this

Quick question for rouge it says two handed weapons as a bonus, two handed as in duel wielding or a two handed weapon?
I'm pretty sure it's two handed weapons rather than two handed weapon
you mean two-weapon fighting?
Yes
yes that is about dual wielding light weapons
Thanks for confirming
Where did it say this?
I'm still gonna type it wrong for some reason
That wording is not used anywhere in the rogue class.
Can't post a picture here so can't tell you other than it's in rogues skills
As a bonus action
No I was correcting their spelling 😂
That's "two weapon fighting"
@hexed marsh is what you're talking about right?
Yeah
Does it not say “two-handed”, then?
Yeah it's holding two weapons. The off hand one can be used as a bonus attack, but it doesn't get the damage bonus
*bonus action
Off hands are a myth.
Not trying to min-max but I'm just doing what's fun
What matters is the order in which you use the weapons, not which hands they’re in.
I mean if you're a rogue and using a dagger/shortsword main hand, then yeah have another weapon (but remember your hands are full, no Use an Object instead without dropping one)
does any body know were i kan join dnd party i am a new player
There’s no main hand either. 😅
Your hands don’t matter beyond the fact that they’re each holding a light weapon.
Conceptually speaking, you know what I mean
They're not Heisenberg's Uncertain Daggers
It’s important to be clear, though, to avoid misconceptions.
Shortsword has more damage than daggers but daggers are easier to hide
Flavor is free
If you have a shortsword in one hand and a dagger in the other, you can attack with the shortsword as your action, and the dagger as your bonus action. The dagger does not add your ability modifier to the damage.
The very next round, you can use the dagger as your action and the shortsword as your bonus action. Now the shortsword doesn’t add the modifier.
RP-wise, though, you'd probably be using the more powerful weapon in your dominant hand, with zero reason to switch hands mid fight...unless you're pulling an Arya Stark in which case sure go nuts
Your hands are irrelevant.
I just want to throw daggers with soulblade
sounds like something Bigby would say 😉
Any one know what a good tutorial to start learning is? I’m literally brand new and I know NOTHING hahah but it looks sick so I want to try and get into it

Hi!! :0
Thanks!! :]
What's the matter?
You’ll most commonly get XP by defeating monsters.
When a monster is defeated, its XP is divided evenly among the group.
okay then is there a set xp for certain types of mosters defeated or it depends on the DM ?
Creatures have an associated XP value, but the DM can award XP for whatever they like.
In pretty much all cases, the DM will tell you how much XP you earn from a combat, solving a problem, or what have you.
okay so basically it depends on how hard the task was
Yes. You could also do milestone based xp which is basically when the party reaches a certain point in the story, they level up.
Personally I prefer milestone, it removes a bit of tedious accountancy, and means I can keep control of the pace.
Milestone is usually when key goals happen, like retrieving a plot item, killing a boss and locating something that kinda fun stuff
It just gives the DM more control over the story and lets them be able to accurately level a party so they aren’t over leveled or under leveled
Hi
Hello
How does dodge work if PC is blinded ?
👍
Hiya
Hello
im tryna make my first world map using inkarnate but i have a bunch of empty space and i dont know what to fill it with-
could someone help me?
Im desperate 😭
Are you asking for art help?
I guess?
Oooh thanks
#dm-world-building and #dnd-maps would probably help the most, however, if you want my advice then I would say adding some mountains, couple of villages, forests, rivers
#dm-world-building would probably help the best with connecting your map to your lore
If you wanna take a look at my map ill put it on #dnd-maps
Alright

Can I play a game in this?
Read the rules first and learn how to create a character first before you try to #find-a-game
All of it?
what is the difference between a traditional, community, and paid game?
Oh wait which rules
The first four chapters on character creation.
Ik how to make a character, but not much
@vapid meteor Aaron I got help look now we can learn dnd together
You still need to learn how the game works beyond character creation.
How do I actually join a game?
Check #find-a-game
Traditional/community are free, paid is...paid. Not sure what the first two mean for you.
Community ads could be promoting an actual, well, community, such as a server where multiple games are run.
However without looking at a specific post, it's hard to say exactly how people are using it for sure
Yeah, could be that.
Community might be play-by-post, too

Hey all, newish DM here, need help creating a statblock for a Gunslinger NPC. would be around CR20~. Should I just take the Mercer sheet and level it up? Or should I grab other CR20 statblocks and mix them in to have accurate stats?
I've been able to grab statblocks from other monsters up to now because of early campaign privledge, but I haven't had to build a character based on firearms and I can't find statblocks to match what im looking for
maybe doublecheck with folks in #dm-discussion ?
Hi, really new to to d&d anyone care to help me understand the game a little better?
is there an aspect that is puzzling that we could help with? the whole scope of the game is a lot to encompass. But if you have a more specific question we can help.
have you checked out the Basic rules yet?
just got done reading basic rules, still hazy on how Im supposed to behave and where my personality would fit in the world of d&d
i will, thanks
well, I think that is one of the nicest parts of D&D - the variety of personalities that can sit down around a table and play this game together. One of the most important things is remembering that you will be a part of a group (not the main character in a video game) and that giving others time to speak and shine enhances the game as a whole and then when it's your character's time to shine, people should be equally respectful
ok, and are d&d games frequent online as well or just physical? dont really got a big huge d&d community in my country
it definitely depends on your region. Some folks have a lot of Local Game Stores that host games, or have a group like Baldman games who host games.. LOTS of games are played online over discord, zoom, roll20, etc.. If your local area is a bit more barren, the online play may be the way to go.
Just know that finding a group takes patience. there are a lot of players and not as many Dungeon Masters, and then on top of that, schedules have to align. It takes time but when you get a group that clicks - so worth it
alright thank you so much<3
Should I try to seduce every magical door I encounter as a bard or should I just go my way?
is that a joke?
No as a grown man i asked a particularly important question that is very important to development of mankind and future generations
Hello everyone. I am new to DnD and just started learning about it all.
As a bard, it'd be weird if you didn't.
that's a pretty unhelpful stereotype
If anyone could tell me how the hell do I get up to date on all the things about dnd and should I try to play a newbie game first or study until I get it all?
My bard has never once attempted to seduce a door.
read the basic rules. they're linked in the pinned messages of this channel
But I can understand the meme.
nobody expects you to have all of the rules memorized.. but it is generally considered helpful/considerate of other's time to at least go over the basic rules.
Watching a few basic dnd campaingns and playing bg3 helped a lot actually u can try if you wish
I got the basics, but I feel like I need more knowledge before i start playing
Hi, I’ve been playing DND in the United States with my friends for a while and recently moved to Sweden and wanted to see if there was any opportunities to play eu times too
you can almost certainly find some EU time games online
You should ask your group. Some might appreciate it; others probably won’t.
what do you consider "the basics"?
folks here are generally happy to help answer questions.. help give firm foundations.
as a beginner most details seems to be suffocating at first but trust me bro once you get in you get used to it pretty fast
This article might help.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/728-new-players-guide-the-group-that-games-together
thank you!
Character creation, dice, movement, checks...
if you understand how that all works, you're probably good to jump into a game
dndbeyonds and roll20s character generators helped about those
Would other players be frustrated and kick me out if Ikeep asking questions like "what does this potion do?" Xd
no, that's normal
it's expected to not know what every magic item does
in fact knowing what every magic item does can be annoying for the dm
Great! I guess there are many apps where you could play online, which one do you suggest for me?
unlikely. Especially if you tell people in the beginning.
Typically people only start to get annoyed when someone asks about things that literally just happened or were already explained and that person is consistently not paying attention so they always ask
Btw thanks for replying guys
what app you'll use generally depends on the group you're playing with
so I would find a group first then use whatever they use
Thank you all for the help! Hope to see you in some future games! Good luck!
I tend to annoy my DMs by being TOO detail oriented. It comes from long years of playing the original 3.5 edition rules. An example would be my first 5e game, where I specified a tent to be made for my character ( a female Leonin Fighter ) that could house up to 6 persons, had a 'folding' stove with tough canvas flue, marked with her family crest on the sides, and then wanted a 'pull cart' ( think ricksaw, but with tall sides, covered top like a conastooga wagon, with tall 8 spoked wheels with iron rims, and the sides built out thick enough to have compartments for tools, equipment, general items, and even hidden compartments ( think I specifed those accessable only from the bed of the cart )... gods did that engender a few arguments.
If I was the DM of your game i would immediately throw a meteor at your tent bro no doubt no staggering lol
Now why would you do that? I was planning on housing the entire Party in that thing!
Incidents happen (:
How do you dm?
Me? I have not DM'd since 3.5 days... lo, these many decades ago.
If I WERE to DM with 5e rules, I would probably run it a lot like the old 3.5 rules... allowing players and characters to have things built for them to ease their travels.
If nothing else, it would be a great 'money sink'. Making the player's characters use up their gold commissioning things for their use.
ooh so you love to build or appreciate well made structures any kind
Not just that, but the creation of such items helps the characters, as well as uses up money they collect. And, it adds 'realism' to the game world. Hirelings, followers, animals, both draft and pack, etc. Eventually, the players would be investing in businesses, buying ruined keeps and such to renovate, etc.
There’s some helpful links and general advice here:
?newdm
- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.
- Learn how to be a Dungeon Master with this YouTube video or D&D Beyond article.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- Decide what kind of campaign you want to run. Here’s a few good options for new DMs.
- Get advice from your fellow Dungeon Masters in #dm-discussion and #dm-world-building.
Yeah those kind of realism adds depth to the world and adds many options makes sense good call
?dmtips
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
hi! i am very new to dnd and unashamed of it :3 when i say “new” i really mean new and i want to do research (world lore, character lore, lore in general) and understand the game better - what canon websites / accurate videos (youtube perhaps?) do you guys suggest i check out? (for youtube maybe channels?)
Welcome! There’s some good links here to get you started:

This guide s a good place to start: https://howtogm.guide/
Check out Handbooker Helper and WASD20's Rules School for good coverage of the fundamentals of D&D mechanics. As for lore, Jorphdan and AJ Pickett are decent, but there are multiple official D&D settings, and the game you ultimately play in may be set in something the DM created themselves. So if you're watching these videos for fun, have at it, but be aware that this info may not be relevant to how you play!
thank u so much!

Hi
Hello
What channels do I look in to learn about d&d
I really want to learn it but don’t know where to look
This channel is to help new players to D&D.
The bot post above has everything you need to get started.
Where do people look for inspiration for backstories, bonds, flaws, allies, enemies and such
The PHB has more backgrounds and PBIF.
Player handbook I'm assuming?
What's the pbif
Players handbook has a lot of good ones. Chapter 4.
Sorry.
PHB = Player's Handbook
PBIF = Personality, Bond, Ideals, and Flaws.
You can also use the campaign's setting to draw inspiration, lots of roleplay potential there.
Thanks 🙏 I'll take a look tomorrow I am about to fall asleep
Hello
hey, should i buy the players handbook? i know very little is it worth it
whats the requirement before i can join a campaign
before you can? nothing
before you should? read the basic rules, get a rough of understanding of how it works
thank you
Does anyone know a very RP heavy, text-based community (discord) based in Forgotten realm. There was a server called City of Splendors, that was set in Waterdeep. But seems dead now.
If you're looking for a D&D server, check out #looking-for-community
If I want to throw my players into a gladiator ring, How should I go about sending enemies in? I want to do it 1 pc vs 1 enemy/ 1 pc vs 2 for weaker enemies.
But does that work?
#dm-discussion maybe
Didn't find anything there.
Well this isn't the channel to look for servers I'm afraid
im so sad because i wanna play dnd irl with my friends but the only one who plays it and isnt starting off is already in a group 😦
and their DM doesnt let just random people join but i kinda understand that tbf
might start my own little club with some people my age so im gonna make flyers to hang up around my neighboorhood, im gonna read the user manual again so maybe i'll be the dm lol
Try local gaming stores and board game places.
There's a lot of fun being the DM, and it's the only sure-fire way of finding a DM.
thx
I started out as a DM - not as a player. It's perfectly fine. I'll trigger the botpost that has some new dm resources.
?newdm
Oh is that not a thing anymore? I thought there was one 🤷♂️
