In 5e normally you have: 1 Action, 1 Bonus Action, 1 reaction.
Thieves in 5e TTRPG can do a lot more with their Bonus Action than most characters can do (such as dash, dodge, disengage, pick a lock), but they still only have 1 bonus action.
In general you can remake a BG3 character, such as 'Half-Orc paladin, oath of ancients' but some abilities will be different. Best to check what the TTRPG abilities actually say.
Thank you. I’m glad to hear that there is prep time. I had read that usually you just communicate with the DM prior to check and see if ur character isn’t disrupting anything that the DM has planned
I only got as far as making a character on a sheet irl. Id love to start somehow.
Time to try and find a game then!
You can look for ones online or in person.
In person you can try gathering a bunch of friends together for a oneshot (a very quick, one and done game so they don't get spooked by comitting long term and get to see if they like the game) and one of you DMs (there are some premade adventures to help guide this).
Or you can look for local established groups in local game stores, or on facebook or meetup.com.
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
Find a game can help you post and look here for online games. Read the instructions carefully in Find-a-game. There's also other LFG like r/lfg on reddit, or some Virtual Table Tops have their own LFG (like Roll20 has it's own LFG you can filter to look for games on Roll20)
Forgot how to make a character. I dont mind playing a premade character
Looking at the website ig ill be a premade bard
These are things you'll need to check with your DM.
For now, before finding a game, best just get an idea of what D&D is and how it works. Have a look over the official races and classes, see which ones you like, make a practice PC, so on.
But really it comes down to finding a game. Your DM might want you to make a PC with them and the group, or might accept a premade PC that follows the basic rules and so on.
Yea just looking for a DM or game atm then ill read up on the rules they wanna go by
Hey so js a new player to dnd overall here. Seen a couple of short videos and campaigns but haven't had my first game or made my character yet. Any suggestions?
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.

- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
The above resources can help you get started! You don't need to read all of the rules before finding a game, but having a look over character creation and combat rules before finding a game can help speed things up. And of course you can ask questions here!
Finding a game is your first challenge, and you can use the channels here or look in person, or look on other sites depending on your preferences.
Hi
I haven't played but what I'd do is have a bunch of character concepts (Most likely randomly thought of them and just wrote it down) and then discuss with the DM the campaign details for the rest of the stuff, so the second half is just session 0 like Elgate said
Thanks. I have two characters I’m currently working on however I’m sure adjustments will always need to be made
I played my first game yesterday, it was so much fun
I need to find online sessions too. Being in person is fun but managing time is hard
scheduling is one of the the worst monsters you'll ever face in D&D
It crits really hard resulting in many TPKs.
What online game are you referring to?

to clarify, i am about as illiterate as they come about this kind of game
what would you recommend someone with absolutely no prior experience
What did you download? I'm asking this because some people confuse D&D the tabletop game with a D&D video game (which this server doesn't directly talks about).
Which video game?
Baldurs gate 3?
This server discusses D&D the tabletop game.
that's not really the one i downloaded
Google "Dungeons & Dragons Online: Community Discord" (sorry I don't have the URL for it). I'm not sure if it's an official server.
that'll do, thanks for the help man
Eyo, im getting nervous
Might start my first campaign soon if all goes well and i feel underprepared 😅
Even tho, i read so much about DnD, etc. But i don't own any of the materials yet
and plan on playing wizard 😭
The free Basic Rules is all you need to get started.
Does your DM share their physical/digital books?
I'll ask him... but i imagine so, if he's gonna use roll20
Hello, i wonder if anyone could help me create my character sheet, i am pretty new to this and need a bit of help for it. If anyone would be so kind to help please DM me or show a way. 😊

Feel free to come back after you’ve checked them out with questions
hello, i'd like to discover the dnd experience; what are the steps to start a game ? where do we play ? (where's the table)
Check out the links above.
Good luck and have fun
thk
Im filling out a charcter sheet right now what is inspiration?
That's something you can earn from the dm
So like the extra hitpoints the dm has to give them to me alright
No
@mint narwhal If you have inspiration, you can expend it when you make an attack roll, saving throw, or ability check. Spending your inspiration gives you advantage on that roll. Additionally, if you have inspiration, you can reward another player for good roleplaying, clever thinking, or simply doing something exciting in the game
i'm quite fluent in english but, do you know is there are any foreign languages severs ?
But i still have to earn inspo from the DM right?
Yes
You just have to look in #find-a-game
Ok ty thats all i needed to know
No problem good luck
Any advice for someone dming for the first time tomorrow
You can ask for DMing advice in #dm-discussion

I suggest start by checking out the free basic rules, maybe watch some folks playing D&D on YouTube/Twitch (remembering that these streams are entertainment first, not teaching D&D per se), then maybe try your hand at making a character sheet or two, then go find a group and start playing!
well i ment questions on the line like how would i play a game online?

And how are we actually going to play the game since I'm in istanbul turkey
Lots of people play online these days, usually using voice chat and some kind of shared dice roller or virtual tabletop app.
Okay
Thanks
Is Tabletop Simulator used to play DnD?
It could be.
Uh,hi?
Howdy.
Idk how to play,I just thought Dungeons and Dragons would be fun to play with my friend
And I looked it up online, and now I'm here.
What do I do-
Is it a popular way to do it? I'm guessing no?
It's not common as far as I know, but I'm sure Google knows more.

I wanted to try to play DND, but I don't know much about it, what should I do to play?
Hey everyone,
Can anyone tell me how can I make a announcement that I'm looking for players to join my adventure?
check out #find-a-game. It has instructions in how to use our looking for channels
I'm willing to join btw
Please use the correct channels (read #find-a-game) to organize a game. Posting this in the normal discussion channels like here is off-topic.
Hi
Welcome! If you’re new to D&D check out the pinned messages here in the channel - lots of useful links and resources to help get you started!
Are most creatures tameable in dnd 5e
@echo kelp how would a person see my post in #find-a-game ?
There aren’t really rules for taming creatures. That’s probably something you’d want to discuss with your DM.
Assuming you’ve properly followed the instructions in that channel, the final message gets posted in one of our #looking-for channels instead.
So that’s where people would see it.
Is the the "challenge " thing in a monsters stat block they're cr just checking because we found a ruleset for taming that works for us
Yes
Thanks
Excuse me I have a question about artificer
Depending on the dungeon master is it possible for artifice or to make new equipment for different classes?
You can apply your artificer infusions to another person’s equipment.
But beyond that, that’s something you’d need to discuss with your DM.
There are downtime rules for crafting items, but your DM may or may not use those rules.
And whether a DM allows you to invent brand new things will vary.
(Not sure which of those you mean by “new” equipment.)
Ok thank you so much
Hi anyone have suggestions for handbooks
I suggest starting with the free basic rules and if you like the game enough then consider purchasing the Players Handbook

Both are linked above.
Not that new, I have a character, but I haven't played a session yet
The key is to start in bite-size pieces. I'd suggest playing your first game with one of the Starter kits adventures. They give you pre-generated characters, dice, an adventure that is designed to help you learn the game as you play, and the size of the adventure is scoped to a new DM. If you don't want the physical starter kit, you can get it on DND beyond for a reasonable price. The other resources for new players on here are also good, but the value of a starter set is that it is desgined for new DMs and players. And, you don't need to make an big investment in all the books until after you've played and get hooked -- I mean until after you've played.. 🙂
Do you have a local group of friends who want to play? You can still use digital tools to help you play in person. Or you can just play the game with pen and paper. With the cost of shipping these days, you may want to consider using digital rules / character creation / adventures through DnD Beyond if it is available to you. The other new DM help referenced on this page is also helpful. The key is to learn the game in bite-sized pieces when you are new.
I have created a character but i don't know anyone in istanbul that plays
HELLO
Can anyone send me to a link of a server with high energy people
There is a channel to look for games
#find-a-game
Asking here four times is not the way
Don't spam requests, and follow the instructions in find a game. Other communities are advertised in #looking-for-community . There isn't just one server in that list.
Welcome to the most fun you can probably have around a table! What you do next depends on whether you have a group to play with in person, if you want to play online, or if you want to try out the game in a gaming store. Ofter, game stores have areas to play and welcome new players wanting to learn. (Your experience may vary based on who's playing, but I used to run a lot of games for new players at our local friendly gaming store. In all cases, if you are going to run the game (which is a lot of fun, by the way), you need to start small. I don't recommend trying to read all three of the core books and try to learn that way (used to be the only way, but times have improved for new DMs and players). Look at the resources on this page and the pinned posts (the thumb tack icon at the top of the page). I recommend starting with a published adventure with pre-generated characters for your first game. The DnD Starter sets are good for this, but there are other options suggested in the resources on this page.
How does saving throw works?

https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters Can explain each step.
But for saving throws it's your ability modifier (Say you have 18 str, so +4 str) and your prof bonus if proficient in the save.
Ah. Got it. Then online play may be the best way to start, and there are a variety of places to find games to join. You may want to start in the # Find-a-game area of this discord. I lived in Istanbul a zillion years ago as a kid. I have fond if somewhat faded memories of the city. If you can't find a game, send me a friend request, and I'll see if I can set something up for you.
Thanks
Sooo tldr
Rool dice,get bonus stats?
There isn't a TL;DR in D&D sadly. You really need to try and read them.
You don't need to read all of them, and it's fine to ask questions. But you need to put some effort in.
D&D is a game of rules. You will have to read. Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube will help you learn but they won't replace reading the rules.
Perhaps I'll understand better once I actually play the game
It does really click into place while playing. But still worth trying to make a practice PC to get an idea of it while looking for a game.
Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
Can you create completely original race?
Yes but that's not something to be discussed here in this channel. We're here to help new players. Homebrewing is beyond the scope of this channel.
It's not recommended for a first time player. You can, but you'd need DM permission and they might be wary of allowing a homebrew from a new player who hasn't yet experienced the 'vanilla' game and how it's meant to work.
Welcome to a great hobby! I suggest checking out the info at the Pinned Messages, and then starting small. The best way is if you have a circle of friends who want to try DnD for an evening. I suggest getting the basic rules (free and shorter than the core books, which makes it a good rules intro), and then use a pre-made intro adventure with pre-generated characters. You can also play online with your friends through a virtual table top (VTT), or just go simple and play over Discord, Zoom, or other app of your choice with each character using dice to roll or an integrated dice roller in the app. Depends on how tech savvy you are, although it is apparently relatively easy to set up. Folks on here can help with specific questions you might have.
The most 'By the rule' option for that is using Tasha's Custom Origin.
But for a practice character, I'd recommend focusing on PHB / Basic rule races for now.
Fair fair
But say
What if I were the create a simian hybrid that is half Croc half eel
And it have eel and croc property
Is that a pass?
This isn't a question appropriate for this channel. Ask in #dnd-discussion or #homebrew
Not really.
Simic Hybrids are Ravinica setting only. You'd need DM permission to play outside of that.
And Simic hybrid has specific options you can pick from.
Trying to play an evil character that wants to be the ultimae villain by killing all other heros and villans and make his party the ulimate heros who saved the world
What class should I play with it?
This is something you should talk with your DM about first if they will allow this.
There wouldn’t be a class that’s specifically evil overlord
You can ask in #character-discussion rather than here. This channel is to help new players learn how to play D&D.
alr
What does 2d means?
So the number next to it is the total score
As in 2d8?
Give the context of “2d”
What are you pulling it from
If you're speaking of dice notation x d y means x dice of y type of dice
So 2d6 = roll 2 d6 dice
2d8 is all I got going off
so you roll 2 eight sided dice
2d8 means you roll the d8 (eight-sided) die twice.
What does d8 means?
eight sided die
d(number) = Dice with that number of sides
d20 is a 20 Sided Dice
d8 is a 8 Sided Dice
d6 is a 6 Sided Dice
Etc
d4 = four-sided die
d6 = six-sided die
d8 = eight-sided die
d10 = ten-sided die
d12 = twelve-sided die
d20 = twenty-sided die
Aight
So say I were to make a saving throw to get a modifier, will I keep the modifier for the whole campaign?
Wdym “saving throw to get a modifier”?
A saving throw is something you do to save yourself from something like poison or a trap
Your saving throw modiers is based on your Ability modifier + Proficiency Modifier (only if your class is proficient in that saving throw type)
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/using-ability-scores#SavingThrows
So if say someone already have a low constitution and they need to save throw a constitution die,it won't work?
If someone needs to do a Con Save
They’d roll the die then add their Con modifier and then the result of that affects what happens
They would be less likely to succeed as someone with a higher score yes
For example, fighters are proficient with Str and Con saving throws so they apply their Proficiency Bonus plus the appropriate ability score modifier.
Better the modifier, the easier roll would be
If you have a negative modifer then that affects your d20 saving throw roll.
(Hint: never have a low Con score that gives you a negative modifier)
^ con is very important for staying alive
uhm im new to dnd someone help

What’s the command to get this to appear
Question mark new
Thanks
Ah
Aight understood
Does simic hybrid have any natural bonus to any modifier?
Read the playable race racial features
You should really read on the race you wanna do since there’s a lot to every race
I did and doesn't seem liekt they do
They do only what the racial traits says they can do.
I’m checking rn and it says their Con Score has +2 and +1 to another Score of your choice
Remember that simic hybrids from the Ravnica campaign setting. This is something you have to talk to your DM about if they allow simic hybrids.
You need to look under the race section in Guildmasters' Guide to Ravnica, not the guilds section to get the Simic racial features.
Ohhh so that's modifier
OK got it
Those are score buffs
Not modifier buffs
That's not the modifier. It's the ASI bonus.
It’s not +2 to your con modifier
It’s +2 to your Con Score
Your score affects your modifier
So let me patch this up
If there's a challenge that requires me to have 20 dex
I'll do a saving throw+my char modifier+there usual stats and if it's 20 and above I'll clear it but if not I fail?
A saving throw will require you to meet or beat a DC number.
What you’ve described there is a DC 20 charisma saving throw / ability check.
Ah 😅
If it's a Dex saving throw of DC 15 for example, you roll a d20 and add your Dex modifier and your Profiency Bonus modifier (ONLY if your class is proficient in Dex saving throws).
If your character has a 16 Dex score, the modifier is +3.
You should really read the stuff that’s been sent to you
I though the exact same thing TBF, but realised they are brand new and dont realise.
I did and became partially dyslexic
I'll try to read more into it
Watch the Handbooker Helper videos then.
So certain characters won't be able to get out of a situation if there not proficient in a certain saving throw?
Possibly, depending on the DC.
Potentially yes but the more likely possibility is that they are simply less likely too
In general, proficiency simply makes you more likely to succeed at the things you’re good at.
For the ability score stuff
Your character will have ability scores which then consequently affect other things, including your modifier
You figure out your scores first by either rolling or using preset numbers (ask your DM which their doing and also ask them about what to do) then you’d add any extra things like your Race’s increases
Then for modifier it’s: (Score - 10) / 2 rounded down
So a Score of 12 would have a modifier of +1
Even failing a saving throw doesn't usually mean your character dies. It just means it takes the full effect of whatever you were saving against. Trapped ceiling collapses, take damage and 1/2 if you make your Dex save to avoid some of the damage. Fail your saving throw against a fireball spell, take full damage but 1/2 if you save.
How many D20 are usually in a saving throw?
Really would advise looking over the basic rules and going through step by step as jumping about like this won't really help you.
Aight
Just going through the step by step character guide and learning how to look things up as they can come up can be a great boon.
Most people don't really memorise the rules, they just know where to look when they need to remind themselves.
All checks in Dnd typically use one d20 + ability modifier + proficiency bonus if you have it, and you compare it to the DC to see if you succeed. The penalty for failure depends on what you are checking for. Attacks, skill checks, and saving throws. It is the core mechanic of the system.
DnD math is mainly just adding stuff
It’s really never more than “add a number less than 10” or “divide by two”.
It’s pretty elementary stuff.
In this case it's almost always just X + Y. Like you roll 18 on the dice, and you add +5 = 23 total.
Numbers don’t really get big unless you’ve got like a really optimised high level build
And while the +5 might be something you needed to work out earlier (3 Strength + 2 Prof) you write that down on your sheet, and it changes gradually so is easy to check. (Digital sheets even do this for you).
Does the total number the exact amount or do you need to subtract it?
There is math in the system, but the good news is that your overall modifier only needs to be calculated once per level, and then it is on your character sheet for easy reference. If I am proficient in using the Nature skill, my character sheet might have a +5 written next to it (the total of my proficiency bonus and my ability modifier). If I need to make a Nature skill check, I just look at my sheet, see I have a +5, roll a d20 and add 5. This result is compared to the DC set by the DM.
You're going to have to rephrase that.
Honestly idk what I'm even saying
Yeah Ima just go and read
As long as your roll equals or exceeds the DC, you succeed. Taking a read over of the base rules will probably help you put things in context.
So say I took a damage of 2d8,and I have a HP of 6,how much damage will I take
The DM rolls the 2d8 and tells you what they rolled (which means anywhere from 2 to 16 points of damage).
As said above. If the first die is a 4 and the second a 1, you take 5 points of damage.
Say I got a total of 7 damage and my character is dead?
Nope. There’s rules for what happens when you hit 0 or below.
Please read the Basic Rules on damage.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#DamageandHealing
When dropping to 0 hp:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#Droppingto0HitPoints
New to dnd here, I wanna find a game that accepts newbies but having trouble finding one
Keep looking is the only advice I can give you.
There are waaaay more players than DMs. Learn the rules so you'll make the DM's life easier.
Oh so your just incapacitated usually
Might be best to just go through something step by step at this point and ask a question when you get stuck on something you've read.
At the moment it's like trying to be drip fed rules through googling questions while only have a barest idea on what questions to even ask.
There is a reason we recommend looking over the basic rules and just going step by step through the first chapters.
Your local friendly gaming store, if you have one near you, may host games for newcomers. I know mine did.
Read the link I posted above.
Oof, I live In a rural area, so that's gonna be tricky
Online play is common these days.
Check out iamrazorwing's guide to finding games online:

Step-by-Step characters and Basic Rules for Combat have most of the answers you seek.
Again, you do not need to memorise these before playing, and most will click into place as you play. But have a go at making a practice PC using only the basic rules (no homebrew, no simic hybrids or extra content), and have a glance over combat to get an idea of how it goes.
You might try the find-a-game discussion area on this forum, or take a look at https://www.dnd-compendium.com/looking-for-group I can't guarantee any of these sources for how good they are, but they are a start point.
That's pretty handy! Thanks.
Where do I find people to play with?
Check #find-a-game
Instructions are in #find-a-game
I know you guys tell me to read but I dint understand shit about the spell sheet
Anyone mind endulging me?
Again, just read the first four chapters on character creation Basic Rules. You seem to be going from one random thing to another.
Why are you asking about spell swords when you should just worry about learning about character creation or combat works.
You're just going to confuse yourself even more by asking stuff irreverent to learning about the fundamental rules of the game.
There is no “spell sword” class, its just a term people use. Stick to the basic rules and read through them, then come back with questions
You can write down questions as you go, some will be answered as you read, cross them off
Sry typo
I meant spell sheet
Itll make more sense when you read about spellcasting
We might be better able to help if you say what step of character creation you're at and what part you're trying to do.
hi everyone, new to the server and quite new to D&D (i’ve played in 2 campaigns) but i’d love to be a Dungeon Master, any place to check for resources that would work best for me to learn the most i can
thank you
#dm-discussion might help a bit
i appreciate it y’all, thank you, i completely forgot there was a separate DM thread, my bad
Or take a look at the great resource OldmanYellingAtClouds just posted above a little ways up with ways to find groups to play with at a table or online.
So, how do you play D&D?
have a look at the basic rules. they're linked in the pinned messages of this channel
Get some friends together with your beverages and snacks of choice, and then run an adventure together. One person is the DM, and the rest play characters going through the adventure. The resources in the pinned messages area are helpful to get the idea of how to play. After looking over the basic rules and maybe the video, come back with specific questions. It looks very complicated, but you don't need to have all the rules down to start. Learn to play together -- it will still be fun.
I know this prob obvious, but can you still make character without drawing them
Yeah - artwork is very much optional.
Is there a way to learn d&d online with random people and meet new people since my friends don't want to go into this.
Sure! Give the free basic rules a read: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
Then make a character or two for practice.
Then find a group to play with - read #find-a-game (carefully) and look for groups in #looking-for-players, #looking-for-community (other D&D servers), and #paid-looking-for-game (if you're willing to pay a DM to run a game/campaign). Or if you want to tell folks you're available to play, you can use the bot commands (again see #find-a-game and read the info carefully) to create a post in #750812887697588356.
Yo
Do you need something?
Yes
A party to join
Read #find-a-game carefully - it explains how to use our Looking For Game channels
im overwhelmed by the plethora of text in the rules, might take me a good week to digest it all
I know absolutely nothing about DND and I want to get into it but ik a lot of party's are like on a set schedule and need a set amount of players and I want to play as more of a casual thing and like I said idk the rules of it or any idea where to even start
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
There
Every group has different schedules. This is a social game between humans, so…communicate and work together, the key to any relationship
You don't need to know everything to get started. Focus on making your character, and how combat works, to start. A lot of it can be picked up while you play though
Yeah but like I work alot so I'd only want to play every like 3 or so weeks
Maybe look for communities that run oneshots, or AL groups near you then
Hi
I play in two weekly games, and a monthly game. I run a monthly game. Every group has a different schedule.
Worth looking into I think I'm gonna start with making a character and finding some online dice to begin with if I end up getting more into it I'll prob get some real dice
Jello
Im brand new to this and dont know where to start
Same
Have a look at the basic rules. They’re linked for free in the pinned messages of this channel
Ok i will
@silent cedar , @snow hollow Welcome aboard. This is a great game. It has a little bit of a learning curve in the beginning, but you don't need to know all the rules or have all the books to start. The info in the pinned messages is helpful. The basics are that you gather a group of friends or make new ones in an online game, one person is the DM who sets up the adventure, and the rest play characters who go through the adventure. Take a look at the character creation rules in the basic rule set or the player's handbook if you have that . That should help you get the context of the game. The core is the d20 system -- roll a 20-sided die, add your ability modifier and proficiency bonus (if applicable), and compare it to the difficulty class you need to meet or exceed. It is the same for attacks, checks to succeed with a skill, or a saving throw to avoid something happening to your character.
Ok thank you your name made me think any chance your from belfast? Just there one letter off
i wanna learn too but i feel like actually play would teach you more
Nope. Just the name of one of my earliest and longest played characters.
Fair
melfast do you play more inperson or online
I tried one of those ai apps but it was boring without any jokes between friends
It used to be all in person. With moving and COVID, all the games I play are online. My monthly game that I run is all old friends. The monthly game I play in is the same. The two weekly games are mostly a group of people I found online thorugh a friend and clicked with.
ik what you mean
i wish i knew someone who already knows about it so he can teach me as i go
@tacit stone what would you recoomend
to learn to play whats the best way to start
Reading the basic rules
i mean i know that but whats the best way to actually get into a game
I wish same as im in a relitivly bad city where nobody likes the nerdy shit like comics or funko or things like that
If you have a friendly local gaming store nearby, they usually run games for new players. That is the lowest cost entry point, and they can help you learn the game. Otherwise, take a look at the #find-a-game on this discord, or look at the document OldManYellingatClouds posted above with a good set of ways to get into in person or online games.
Here’s a good guide by iamrazorwing to finding games online https://drive.google.com/file/d/1fqCm4tA5Y_WxlqgryUM_iaz3l7B3zZ0m/view
That's the one. Thanks Pixalated Cat.
You'd be surprised how many people play DnD these days, thanks to Stranger Things and Critical Role.
I had to learn and get into DND solely online because of this.
Never got a chance and still don't to play in person.
Especially cause my area has no public spaces for that besides a store that lets groups use their stuff but I have no outside my phone friends to do that with
i wouldnt want to do inperson thats my preference i just wanna keep it online
I'm happy with my friends online tho. Wouldn't want to abandoned them for a table anyways.
Tho if I had the chance to try in person I would depending on the people I would be with.
I just put a post on redit to see if anyone else about my age likes this in my city
well ima try to learn more tmmrw about dnd because i got to do things rn
but i got a question when you do dnd online what webstie/app is used mostly
I don't use reddit much. Usaly it gets a couple replies or votes and I don't feel comfortable revealing the town/city I'm in on large spaces like reddit
I've seen people use a mix of discord, dnd beyond and roll20
Online is much easier these days than it used to be. There are a lot of tools that help these days. At its most basic level, you just need to play using Discord / Zoom or similar app, and then have people use a dice roller or just roll dice and tell you the results. The next level up in complexity is to use a virual tabletop, and those take a bit of getting used to hosting and using, especially as the DM who has to load maps, etc. If you are technology comfortable, they are pretty easy to use after a bit of trial.
Mhm
?tag new online
Whats roll20
Dnd beyond is like roll20.
They're very similar with similar mechanics but I believe roll20 allows more features like the DM can show off maps and such with tokens of the players
I have no clue what ither are
They're online platforms one can use to host games and make characters and the likes
Not really?
i have to find people rather than play with my friends because i already know they would find this "nerdy"
Dnd beyond is more a character builder and other toolset
i wouldnt even bother asking them
Roll20 is a vtt with character sheet manager
DND Beyond is working on two virtual tabletops, one relatively simple that is available as a test program, and one that is in development for next year. DND Maps, the current one, is only available to DM's with a paid subsription. Roll20 has a free option.
Yeah they're not like, identical but they have similar features iirc
Eh… still not really
Roll20 is a fully fleshed out vtt with a basic character sheet manager
Oh I meant to ask, what does VTT mean? I've seen it a lot but never grasped the meaning
Dnd beyond is character builder and manager with a bunch of dm tools, that has a very basic trial vtt
Virtual tabletop
Ah
Also thank you for correcting me about the two platforms.
I don't use either very often so I'm not always aware of every feature they have
Thank you o(〃^▽^〃)o
Im back was just responding on redit
Trying to learn this game is giving me an aneurysm
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hD-LWHhiseE&list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN&index=1
so many rules, it's kinda intidimating 😭
Some games are like that - lots of rules to learn. Just remember you don't have to memorize the rules - just knowing the terminology and where roughly to find a rule is more useful.
I'd focus on learning how a character sheet works and how to create one (first four chapters of the free basic rules), then how ability scores work (chapter 7) and combat (chapter 9).
It's truly fun once you understand
So true
I love building my characters as well
I have some free time at the moment. Does anyone need help learning the basics of dnd?
There’s some helpful links here to get you started:

😀 Thanks I'm already plenty of familiar with 5e, I'm just offering help to anyone who might need it.
Awesome helping out
I found learning in the fly much easier than reading or having it explained to me
Well, the DM will have to be very patient pausing the game constantly to explain the rules during the session.
This only works if the entire table is ok sitting through this
As with all things DnD it’s important to talk to one another and understand. I have yet to have a group that didn’t welcome a new player. We live indoctrinating new players into the cult club
That's different though than not learning any of the rules before a game
Being okay with new players is one thing, being okay with teaching a new player who hasn’t bothered to try and learn anything themself and requires constant handholding is another
The more a new player learns the rules the more it helps the DM, who's busy as it is preparing and running the game.
Not every table wants to do that
And learning DnD is like playing it, a collaboration. It cant be a one way street where the new player puts in nothing
True.
If a DM is going to spend time prepping a session. Taking the time to learn and know what your character can do, is courtesy at that point.
Hello
Welcome!
My bad. Totally misread. 😅
So I’m sure you hear this a lot but I’m new what in the magical @“&& do I need to know
No worries thanks for the assist either way.

I know bits and pieces.I just bought a dnd set and me and my friend’s and doing a campaign
You have health, you role for stuff that happens and you use your imagination
Alright so take your time reading the basic rules. If you're a player you can start by learning about the class you want to play. I recommend the Handbooker helper series. In regards to combat, this visual guide can help you get started: https://www.dmsguild.com/product/214803/Players-Quick-Combat-Guide
I just need an opinion on how I could develop my character’s backstory
Have you selected a Background yet?
Is there a way to share him from my dnd beyond page
dnd beyond has a shareable link of character sheets, you just need to set the character to public so others can view it.
But I don't believe others can see the Description tab to see the backstory.
I take it you used standard array?
Yep
What's your Background?
Haunted One.
That's a Curse of Strahd one. Your DM approved?
He is a first time Dm but he is not new to dnd
Yea, before we dive in further. Are you already in a campaign?
Or are you currently looking for one?
Me and friends are making one and he is trying to get all of our backstories together.I’m just trying to see if I can’t make mine a little more coherent
Verify with your DM what playable races, feats, sub-classes, etc are allowed.
based on his experience and how new our entire group is it’s probably free for all
Not to mention he just had throat surgery
For best results, I'd recommend having your DM decide on a setting and theme. Preferably by choosing an adventure book if they are new.
Then having you all build backstories around the setting and premise to increase compatibility.
i need to find a group of newbs cuz i am lol
He kind of did the reverse and is trying to find a book that he ca fit around us
Is he new to dnd?
He has played just not dmed
Might still recommend a pre-written adventure for first time DM.
If he's trying to do the reverse, that might make things unnecessarily for difficult for them.
Yeah maybe I’ll ask on Monday.
Yeah, but everyone in this campaign is a theatre kid so we’ll see
What does that have to do with with use a prewritten adventure?
I mean me, personally, the character I made was a character I had already come up with in my head. I just needed a way to realise it.
Oh nothing I was just saying
Does the character have an inherent reason to go on adventures and work with others?
That’s an I’m going to Brother try to work on, but all I know is that I’m gonna have so much fun acting this out because I have a super good idea on like how he will interact with people
Yes, I recommend to avoid the tired "lone wolf" trope as your backstory.
His entire powers revolve around him being depressed. It’s kind of funny, but it’s interesting.
What "powers"?
The abilities that I am giving him are driven by how he has recovered from his grief
Why are you giving your character powers beyond the barbarian class?
You're a level 1 barbarian. You have no powers to speak of.
I would take it a step further and focus on making them a character that is proactive. Thus progressing the story to move forward through the character's actions.
I’m saying, like as the campaign progresses, His abilities are furthered by how he has accepted what happened to him
As a new player to D&D, I want to remind you that your character grows in power as they level up. You don't start off with more powers at level 1 just because of the backstory you write for him.
Flavour is fine but you're limited to what you get with your class features at your given class level.
Flavour is free.
Look, I’m just trying to take a character that I’ve had in mind and try to fit him in somewhere like obviously I’m going to go with what happens but like I said I’m new I’m just trying to figure things out
That's fine. I'm just trying to give you advice as a veteran player/DM.
A lot of new players come in with high expectations and I'm trying to be realistic.
Wait you arent the DM - why are you giving yourself powers at all
it is not in a player’s purview to unilaterally give themself stuff beyond whats in the rules
Are they
What did you have in mind for how the powers work? If anything there is likely a mechanical build that brings the character concept to life.
I don’t think they are, they just mean they’re describing their barbarian abilities as coming from their backstory
For example, I had the character concept of Biotics from Mass Effect. So I went with Custom Lineage, with Telekinetic Feat, and chose the Graviturgist subclass from Wizard.
Well, a level 1 barbarian doesn't really have abilities to speak of other than rage...
Yeah, they said at higher levels
Then that's their forward story than backstory...
Here
Blitz Question: Advantage on a prone target affects the hit die or the damage die aswell?
Hold on hold on one thing at a time please
Attack roll
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/appendix-a-conditions#Prone
- A prone creature's only movement option is to crawl, unless it stands up and thereby ends the condition.
- The creature has disadvantage on attack rolls.
- An attack roll against the creature has advantage if the attacker is within 5 feet of the creature. Otherwise, the attack roll has disadvantage.
It is advantage on the attack roll, not the damage roll
You can only ever get advantage on a d20 roll
Gotcha. Still fresh, just de-briefed first ever campaign. Getting to know the terminology is still iffy.
The idea was to take uncontrollable grief and turn it into focus redemption and acceptance. His rage is his “” grief. He goes from a just Barbarian to a Barbarian with a magical subclass of some kind that was the idea.
It takes time, you'll get the hang of the terminology soon enough.
So wild magic barbarian?
Sounds like it.
That’s the only really magic barbarian subclass
I mean ig ancestral guardians is kinda magical?
Have you looked at the barbariann class and its subclasses
Just what the DND beyond character thing showed me
What about storm Herald? I feel that can lean into the emotional side of it.
Different auras could represent different emotions.
When you say “magical” barbarian i should point out that this term usually means a spellcasting which barbarans do not get
Fair
Hit his main ability in my mind was like spiritual pressure from bleach
I think abilities would be a better descriptor.
What that
All barbarians harbor a fury within. Their rage grants them superior strength, durability, and speed. Barbarians who follow the Path of the Storm Herald learn to transform that rage into a mantle of primal magic, which swirls around them. When in a fury, a barbarian of this path taps into the forces of nature to create powerful magical effects.
Storm heralds are typically elite champions who train alongside druids, rangers, and others sworn to protect nature. Other storm heralds hone their craft in lodges in regions wracked by storms, in the frozen reaches at the world’s end, or deep in the hottest deserts.
Okay I might be able to work with that
That's the flavor of the Storm Harold and Clouds mentioned: Flavor is free
So feel free to change the presentation of those abilities, while keeping the mechanics the same.
Storm Herald Barbarians, generate an aura when they go into their Barbarian Rage. The aura's effects depend on the chosen enviroment, which you can change to reflect an emotional state instead.
I think we are getting far afield from newcomer and deeper into #character-discussion
True.
Very, very, VERY new to D&D. I have played one session, got hooked, and now am struggling to find games that sound appealing and also are free and welcoming to new players. I've only used Roll20. I also know next to nothing about D&D and ttrpg's in general
So you've familiarized yourself with the Basic Rules? If not, I recommend you do.
You can try to find games to join in #find-a-game
The rules of the server or the rules of D&D?
Rules of D&D
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
I mean, a lot of that stuff was explained to me in that one session. We spent nearly an hour going over basic rules and whatnot about the game
It helps to read it to understand the fundamentals of the game.
what level was your character in the one shot?
3
And it's an entire campaign actually
An one shot isn't a campaign but just a very short adventure that lasts one session.
But it's not a one-shot. We've just had the one session so far
Oh my bad.
So you're in a table already and you want to find another table to join?
All good. And yeah you're right that I should read the rules myself. I will when I'm not tired
Sorta.
Biggest challenge is going to be scheduling. Especially if you're trying to juggle multiple campaigns.
Again, check #find-a-game and iamrazorwing's guide to finding games online:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1fqCm4tA5Y_WxlqgryUM_iaz3l7B3zZ0m/view
True, one time I had 3 different sessions, same time same day, had to try and get things sorted, might have succeeded, dont know yet
Soooo... how does playing dnd over discord work? Is it just: get into a discord call and build from there?
There are alot of ways to play dnd online.
Most common would be playing online through a virtual table top.
Pls explain 👍
Kinda yeah
Discord is great for text/voice chat communication. However, a lot of people use virtual table tops (VTTs) to visualize the battlemaps.
Ok ok, and how would I venture to said "virtual tabletop"
?tag new online
Omgggg thank you guysssss
Depends on the one that’s being used
Most are just websites, some need downloads
There a few out there. Roll20, Owlbear Rodeo, Fantasy Grounds, Alchemy RPG, just to name a few.
Which do you use or use most?
Not to mention dndbeyond own virtual table top.
I also have a miscellaneous question
Has the release of baldurs gate 3 brought like a surge of new dnd players?
It’s owlbear rodeo btw
Absolutely
Never played it
I see. I'm getting it for Christmas :D
😀 Thank you for the correction. Don't know why my mind whent to radio lol.
I started with roll20 with Dndbeyond because it made things easier.
I'm currently using Alchemy RPG.
Well I'll try "Roll20" and see how that goes. Thank you!
What vtt is used will depend on the group
Ohhh. Ok. So like... should I try to get a decent grasp of most of them?
Is there a release date for the dndbeyond VTT being officially open to the public?
I figure it might be good to know since alot newcomers will likely make their characters on dndbeyond.
Nah, they’re all pretty quick to learn
Yeah I did
Well that was a cute little process upon joining
Hi yall Im new to DnD, I'm creating a sorcerer Harengon, what's the difference between a type of sorcerer and the sorcerer spells? Do I choose one or both spells in the categories. For example a sorcerer that does wild magic doing tides of chaos, and the separate category of spells like control flames. Im looking at the dnd wiki btw.
Tides of Chaos is not a spell, it's a class feature from the Wild Magic subclass for Sorcerer.
Control Flames is a spell (specifically, a cantrip), not a class feature.
I think dndwiki might not be such a good source
Do i need a class?
Yes, it determines your hit dice (and as such, hit points), most proficiencies, and is generally most of your capability to interact with the world
ohhhh ok thank you
(Remember that Class and Subclass are extremely important distinctions)
what are subclasses?
For example, Sorcerer is a class. Its deal is that your magic is innate and tied to you, whether it was from birth or some magical mishap imbued it into you such as bathing in dragon blood or getting caught in a magical explosion.
the Draconic Bloodline and Wild Magic sorcerous origins are sorcerer subclasses. They each have a list of features that you would gain as you advance in level.
And remember you can't have more than 1 subclass per class
ohhhhh that makes sense
One subclass reflects a draconic bloodline giving you magical power, manifesting as scaly skin for some better unarmored armor class (harder for attacks to hit you), more hit points per level (more hp is always nice), at first, and gaining more features later
The other reflects your magic being wild and chaotic, featuring a table of roughly 50ish random effects, and some DM dependent features.
oof sounds complicated
Not as such, necessarily
Is the draconic bloodline avaible to harengons or is it specific to races?
subclass and class are both completely independent of race
There have only ever been three racially-locked subclasses
the Battlerager Barbarian (infamously bad)
the Arcane Archer Fighter (similar boat as the prior)
the Blade Singing Wizard (later re-released to not be race-locked)
ohhhhh ok
and that's to my recollection, but I'm fairly sure I'm correct
Any race can be any class, and any race can have any subclass (outside of the two that are super old design now, didn't even find attention in later fixing, and are both infamous for not being very good anyway)
You know on the basic character sheet, there's three pages?
would I put that dragonic bloodline class on the third page? and the regular spells on the first?
because I had my Dm help me earlier, and they put all the regulars on the third
but it says spell class
I'm not sure as to a manual-fill format, since I use DNDBeyond
do they fill it in for you on DNDBeyond?
it automates a lot of it
OoO whaaat
you'd put draconic bloodline next to where you put sorcerer, in the class box
wow, ive been overcomplicating this the whole time 😢
Howdy folks! Making my first character tonight ❤️🔥
What you making?
A cleric/planning to multiclass bard. Half-Elf, follower of Oghma with Knowledge Domain
Ooo, fun multiclass. Be careful though, you've got two different ability scores for spellcasting (charisma for bard, wisdom for cleric)
I have a little bit of experience with BG3, if that counts! This is my sheet so far. Still gotta go type out her story but she’s mostly put together stats wise! Some good rolls on dnd beyond
BG3 rules slightly different to dnd5e
Is this for a game or just making to practice ? DMs like to see stat rolls
Honestly looks pretty good only advice would maybe get a dex weapon if you can but that’s completely up to you and besides you’ll be mostly spell casting it’s a very minor thing I just noticed
Just practice and lucky ai rolls! I’m always down to re-roll for any game though, that’s good to know. 😍
True but definitely better then no experience
Good 👍
Bet
Yeah always worth asking the dm tho just in case
Your also missing bard cantrips and some bard spells
Some might have a unique way of doing it that spices things up as well
Oh yeah good catch might want to double check that @grave ermine
One thing I noticed in a campaign I played in was that I was the only one that used point buy, and somehow all the other players who "rolled off camera" all had a stat that was a 20 total lol
I only added one, I want it to be a lore thing where my player changes class when they learn more about their story. That’s why I intentionally left them out, but still added a level of bard for context
Moreso, left automatic bardic inspiration but didn’t add any prepared spells
Ah gotcha clever
That’s why wisdom and charisma are so high too, it added bard proficiency points too I think
From what it sounds like you’ll do great you seem very ready to play your character and have a good time
Ty ✨
Makes sense
#find-a-game has instructions on how to use the channels in that category
Sooo how much hp is normal for a very beginner character?
6-14
Ohh ok ok I have 7
whats your class and Constitution Modifier?
The smallest hit die is a d6 (wizard)
Probably shouldnt walk around with less than 14 CON
So 7 means something is off
Level 1: the maximum of your hit die (so 6 for Wizard or Sorc, 8 for most other classes, 10 for Fighter, Ranger, Paladin, and 12 for Barbarian) + your Constitution modifier
Ok dunno If I'm right but my con is 9 with a "-1" modifier??? No idea how tbh. I used the dnd beyond character maker thing
The standard numbers thing.
you should have at least a 12 in CON imo
Standard array, ok
Yeah that
Put a number above ten in CON
Also I'm now realizing how much of an impact Constitution has
Well yeah
Ok im gonna do some switching. Brb
I would not go lower than 14
Unless you want the thrill of playing a glass canon. Risky though
i think 12 is fine for ranged characters
#find-a-game has instructions
Yeah it's the only stat I suggest newbies don't dump
I don't really like the "Don't do this" kinda advice but if your dm has any level of danger in their game then low hp could end your characters time at the table quickly
Its basic functionality
And to explain, 10 is 'middle' for ability scores. Every two points above ten is a +1 modifier. 9 is -1 and every two points below nine is another -1.
Does strength affect spell damage?
Strength does not. Your spell casting ability does
Type /looking in any channel
Ok im dumping strength then
Which depends on your class, but can be wisdom, intelligence or charisma
Play a dwarf don’t need strength for heavy armour then
ehh but then you would be playing a dwarf
Ok switched things around and my hp went from 7 to 10
So now I need to know. How do you determine spell casting ability?
What class are you? It should say in the class guide
Wisdom
The spell casting system tbh really confuses me. I'm trying to understand tho
Oh ok cool that my highest Stat. But I'm pretty sure it's like every clerics highest Stat
it should be
Yeah that tracks. You want your main schtick to be as good as possible
What part or parts?
Mainly spell slots
Hey everyone. I am new here. Shana from India.
I think its like... you have access to any spell of that level as long as you're "around" that level? I think? But you can only cast so many spells until you're out of slots?
Also, hello shana!
I'm probably totally wrong tbh
Your class table has your slots and what level you can cast. For full casters (like cleric) the level of spell they can cast is usually around half their level rounded up.
Welcome Shana!
When you want to cast a spell, you expend a spell slot. The level of the slot has to be at least the level listed in the spell.
for example, if you want to cast a 2nd level spell, you have to expend a 2nd level spell slot. You can expend any level higher that you have, and it might get a benefit (like more damage), but it has to be at least 2nd level.
think of spell slots like your "mana" from video games. but slots are neatly packaged amounts of mana, so you cant use the energy for something else.
Also, for a Cleric, some will refer to a cleric as a "full caster" - it simply means they follow the usual formula, they go all the way to 9th level spells, the maximum.
They get new spell slot levels at... 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th, 11th, 13th, 15th, and 17th level.
So, half your Cleric level rounded up, is a good trick.
Also, remember cantrips can be spammed for no cost, they just upgrade (if at all) at character levels 5, 11, and 17 (they'll say so)
Ohhh ok ty ty
It's just spells of 1st level or higher than need spell slots, which then need to be of at least that spell's level or higher
So I can just keep casting cantrips over and over?
Yes, they are "at will" you can cast them as often as you want.
You take that Sacred Flame and you can cast it literally every round against the monsters - the only cost is your Action (for that one).
It's just not very powerful. Reliable, free, but won't do as much damage as a lightning bolt.
I've gotten interested in Dnd through podcasts but I don't really know much about it, but I still want to start playing it. Does anyone have any tips how to start getting more into Dnd without being overwhelmed?
Maybe you could enter a game with a friend? It's always easier trying something new when you're with a friend
that probably wouldn't work out my friends have terrible organisation
Any dnd players in istanbul
Then I'd probably recommend having a good session 0 and feeling comfortable with the people you're gonna play with. A game in your own language (if it isn't English) also helps with communicating things
lol
Especially getting along with the DM helps. If they seem friendly and helpful enough, then that eases the tension a lot
Honestly if I get to know ppl I'm playing with I'm mostly fine I think? I also prefer English to my native language so I thankfully dont have that limitation
Ah okay, that helps then! You could also try looking for people you can get along with first, and then just look for a DM to host for you. That way you don't have to play with people you know literally nothing about
yeah that works
I think everyone would be more comfortable playing with a few aquaintances too lol
Do you know anyone you could ask to join? It doesn't have to be your best friend per se, just people you know you can get along with
And that'd be interested in playing DnD
my partner likes dnd I might ask him
Always worth a shot!
anyway thank you

I'm looking for a little advice on how to return to D&D because my 14yr old son suddenly asked about it and wants to learn to play.
I have some ancient actual -D&D- guides (Not AD&D)... and I realized that the handbook and rules I knew are readily available on the internet archive... So, I could just teach him from that.
I figure I'll force the kids to do an adventure... invest money if it turns out any of them like it, but maybe that's not the best approach.
I only just looked at the D&D Beyond site today... is there enough information that isn't behind a paywall to help me DM and help them learn to play? Would the character sheets created there be suitable for the original AD&D rules?
I checked a couple of nearby game stores and the only D&D campaigns they have right now are fairly hardcore players... They might be open to newbies, but my son is shy and wants to learn enough to not feel out of place from day 1.
I'd appreciate any advice folks have.
(Feel free to make a thread or DM or direct me to a better channel)
Funny im already helping somebody out why not another you dont mind if i teach you more? im not all knowing btw
I'll be glad to jump on a thread and read through... I'm just trying to figure out the best way to approach this now, then go talk to him/them
(I have 4 boys, 3 are old enough to learn the rulse and play)
I wouldn't mind picking up the latest ruleset and learning it with them... but it's an investment and I hesitate to throw that much money at something they might spend an hour figuring out isn't interesting to them
He also wanted to learn Battletech
Well D&d doesnt really need all the rules now does it
(I spent a little time talking about how I used to game... and he really liked some of those ideas)
not everyone can memorize everything no need to spend extra money just for a little not important rules
His goal is to learn the (player) rules well so he can join one of the campaigns that exists nearby... which expect you to know them
Hm
Ditto with Battletech... which I thought was a big investment in minatures... but they play a simplified version called Alpha Strike which comes with some minis and is mostly focused on combat (which sounds a lot less interesting to him)
Greetings travelers. Could I know whetherrr I could play dnd with human like an actual campaign on a phonee?
It makes sense... he's 14... he doesn't want a watered down version... even if it's watedeep 🙂
(sorry, can't help it... dad jokes come with the territory)
I actually need to step AFK... @remote oriole Please DM me or suggest in here what a good approach might be... I may be busy for a short while.
I can be a DM for you but a good approach would just to play dnd like any other kind of game go with it

Read the above
I need to watch all those intro videos some day soon. So far I've just read all the background books but I'm not sure if I'll ever actually play a game since it's super rare to find multiple people who actually fit together well for a game. 😅
But I'm a fan of the Faerun, Krynn etc. worlds so at least I can read all that background lore.

I’ve been here now 2-3 weeks and I realized that not many dms are doing party’s where they could do it always i mean with ni set time i get it that they want to control the environment and so but its really hard for me to find a party because i hate doing stuff on set times any tips on how tips 🫤
Hi! Just joined this group, how long/how often do sessions go? New to 5e (read the rules, never tried), used to play 3.5e years ago
Can you clarify what you mean?
Depends!
Sometimes you’ll be playing for 1 hour, 2 hours. 6 hours.
Sometimes a campaign will go on for years if the party wants!
Sometimes it’ll be a one-off one-shot session
I wanna find a game but i hate playing on set time wich makes it difficult for me to find one
It depends on the group. In comparison to an adventures league games they tend to be from 2-4 hours. Mostly leaning towards 4 hour.
If you need it to be a specific length, it’s important to bring that up during the session 0.
Then your best bet is dnd adventurers league. Since you only commit to a single session at a time.
You can ask full details at #adventurers-league
I meant it where you can play any time you want but ok thanks
Yeah, i need to find a group too but cant yet
got any advice on how to play dnd with friends online
If u already have a group and a DM
yep we do, all beginners tho
i just used roll 20 to make a basic map and played there
even tho there are way better sites to do so roll 20 is kinda easy
to create a map
we were thinking of using it but we have 4-5 players
and i think it only allows 3 characters per campaign for the free version
nono we played with 7 or smthgn w free
wait whatt
No limit on the number of players using the free version of Roll20.
yesh
ohh doom u artificer?
i just started to get a hang of that class
untill my 8 intelligence paladin destroyed my contraptions and plans
so we just pvped and blew the hole dungeon up with ourselves in it
well yeah i never tried before but i study CS and worked on engineering projects before i read alot about alchemy ...ect it suits me
'-' can someone teach me btw and get me in a game pls
idk if we get invited sure imma teach but noone is looking for players ig
how do you delete a character from a campaign
also i think it was that you can only add 3 characters per user so my bad
@grim flowerwell i guess i am doomed
dies of word play
@tired axle Do not ping the entire moderation team for non-emergencies
'-' but bro how can we find a game as new players it is almost impossible
Follow the instructions in #find-a-game
You keep looking and go to other D&D-related Discord servers' LFG channel.s
Check out iamrazorwing's guide to finding games online:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1fqCm4tA5Y_WxlqgryUM_iaz3l7B3zZ0m/view
There are waaaaay more players than DMs so finding an opening may take you a long time. Finding a table to play at won't be immediate like a video game lobby.
is is harder than i thought btw thx @crude musk@cobalt frigate and i didnt mean to be disrespectful srry for the tag
Be patient, keep looking.
Um
D&D isn’t like a video game where sessions are constantly happening and you can just drop in. It takes prep and organization. You may be interested in westmarch style play (where multiple DMs and parties act in a living world but may not be consistent) or play-by-post (PBP) where playing is mostly asynchronous.
?tag new online - see below
If you have a question then just ask. Don't wait for someone to ask you, "Do you have a question?"
When lockpicking or pickpocketing do I add my dex bonus as well as my sleight of hand bonus to my roll?
Pickpocketing would use the Sleight of Hand skill check.
Lockpicking would use the Thieves' Tool skill check.
The DM would tell you which Ability to use but typically it would be Dexterity.
(Note: only those who are proficient with Thieves' Tools can use it to pick locks)
hello, how do i play adventures leagues online?
#adventurers-league might be the place to ask
Hi! I'm new to dnd, but I have a character and kinda know how to play because my uncle started teaching me. I was wondering if anyone here could help explain to me how to play a little bit? Or at least just how to create a character, because my uncle kinda just did it fir me. If not, i understand! If so, thank you! :)

@lime anvil read above
The first few chapters of the Basic Rules linked above tell you the process.
Ty!
No problem have fun and good luck
@lime anvil it's awesome your uncle helped
Ty! I think I'll use that to figure out more of the game, and when my uncle comes back next month then I'll probably know more! Im really excited to learn how to play dnd really well, i've started a game with my uncle, we've had one session already and its really fun! :D
Awesome
Hello my fellow druid
Hello fellow druid
hows everyone today
hi everyone new trying to learn the game, feeling overwhelmed with this right now
im new too and yes it is
my son has started wanting to play so I went out got some books aaaaaand now I think I might be in over my head lol
i know i am lol
glade i'm not the only one
no your not
i got a few starter sets and the essentials kit then won a huge lot of books, me the wife were doing a practice run last night and it did not go vary well at all
yea i did one encounter got a kill i was hooked
This is a random question but what is ur druid's race? Mine's a dragonborn :3
Mine is a wood elf
Are you in a club or something like that?
Helo
Because how I learned the game was through playing because everyone is willing to help newcomers
I tried to make a character sheet and it uh 💀
no I'm in no club or anything like that I won the books at our local shop they were doing a raffle
I also have no idea how to play DND but it looks fun I've only ever played like fake DND where we kinda just roleplayed and rolled dice to see how effective things where

i fell in love in love with it
i played alot as a kid and our dm was just the best at it, i was trying to him so he could teach me after a long search i just recently found out he passed away
i used to play dnd with the lead men and dragons
nice
so I thought I would turn here and see if someone would mind help me or anything that i have watched more then a few videos and still hasint really clicked even got a audio book and thought that would help but seems nothing has really made this easy or better understanding
Read the materials above
i was reading that but was hoping to get some extra help I think i have made a mistake thinking this group would be more helpful and not everyone learns the same way, this is like oh something is wrong with your car here the manual on how to fix when your in a room full of experts that could point you in that right direction as to what the disconnect is.
people here are happy to help if you have specific questions about something.
hello
D&D is a game of rules. You can't avoid reading about the rules, even if you watch video tutorials like Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper."
If you have trouble understanding a concept of a rule please feel free to ask us here. However, given there are new players joning every day it's not feasible to give one-on-one tutorials.
how do i find a group
Check #find-a-game
We're you using dnd beyond?
Go to your local game store or you could find an online group
Or if you are in school there's probably a club
My group is just my friends and only one of them knows all the rules and I know most if them but I ain't no master then everyone else are people I introduced to dnd or had an interest but didn't know where to start
hey, I'm new to all of this since i never tried dnd b4, i play hearthstone if that helps💀, i made a character btw
Have you read the free Basic Rules yet?
and i play dnd beyond
no, what's that?

Both are linked above.
D&D Beyond is not in and of itself a game. It’s a website that’s used to help people play D&D.
oh, how long will that take?
ohh thanks for pointing it out
I just did
so... is dnd like role play?
Not 100%
D&D is a collaborative storytelling role playing game
My group doesn't do role play unless you say giving them agents is role play
Even the combat can have role-play elements (e.g. players describing how their character uses their class features in a descriptive/evocative way beyond "I do thing")
Role play is the act of performing actions as if you were another person or character. Even if you don’t act out scenes in first person, your still role playing
Yeh
the playlist is long, since I'm a variant human who's trynna stay away from magic, can i watch the non spell related vids only?
Totally up to you - how prepared for playing the game do you want to be?
the more you read up/watch and understand the rules/mechanics, the easier it will be to play.
thanks man
But most groups are fine taking on new-to-D&D players - folks who show they're engaged and trying to learn the rules and just fit well with the rest of the group will likely do better at finding a game/group.
Feel free to look for games in #looking-for-players (this is groups/DMs looking for players to join their game), #looking-for-community (other D&D servers that may have various games running), #paid-looking-for-game (if you're willing to pay a DM to run a game/campaign for you).
Then there's #750812887697588356 where you can use the bot commands to create a post to advertise that you're looking for a game. Make sure to read #find-a-game carefully to see how to use the bot commands to make a post there.
Also one final tip - don't share your exact age (or other personally identifiable information) or your post will get removed.
See server rules for why we don't allow that.
yea that's understandable
Maybe share your character idea in #character-discussion ?
I am brand spanking new, never played before.. don't even know what type of character to create lol
will do
Have you read the free Basic Rules yet?
yeah started reading them, going step by step
I purchased the D&D beyond membership
Take your time with it.
I am at creating a character
Any particular character theme seem interesting to you?
kind of interested in barbarian
Fun!
This is a good video on barbarian: https://youtu.be/TRUuhZxWxEk?si=LejoIklLjIe_RaSm
just worried that if I go full barbarian, I can be wiped out by wizards
But you can also wipe out wizards
You really don't need a D&D Beyond membership unless you are either 1) a DM or 2) want more than six character sheets.
Keep in mind dnd is a cooperative game, so even if your character have a weakness it’s covered by your party.
Im one of those dive all the way in people lol
Or you ran off ahead and get yourself killed because you didn't communicate or cooperate.
Thanks this video is pretty cool, I think it helps my decision on being a barbarian
Feel free to reach out to me directly if you need help getting started. I’m busy at the moment but should be free later today.
Hey, does anyone have time to explain a character creation to me and other stuff in dm? Thanks.
appreciate that.. I'm reading up on race right now
Do you have a specific question
Dm
If you have a question, ask it
Hey all, I’m completely new to D&D and I’ve tried reading the free rule pdf thing but it’s so much information in one place and my brain is fried, would someone be able to help crack it down in a nutshell or is it way too complex for that?

Take a look at the Handbooker Helper series! Short videos that break it down piece by piece. It's great.
No one’s gonna be able to summarize it.
My advice is
Take it slow and read in chunks
Dont be afraid to read again
Watch the linked videos
Watch some live play
Ask specific questions
so I'm trynna look for a game but when i submitted a request everything is not set and i don't know where to set it(experience - availability...)
Right below the post that has it saying unset should be buttons
Oh awesome, thank you both, ill look into the videos and what not
what's game style and preferred way to play ?
Preferred way to play is like "Play by post" or "I want to use roll20 and video". That kind of thing. Game style is what you're looking for in a game. If you only want games that are set in avernice, put it there. If you want your games to be lots and lots of combat, write it down. Does that clear it up at all?
I can see new folks not understanding all that - it's okay to say "Not sure - I'm new" in those spaces.
i didn't understand the "play by post" and "roll20 and video" sorry I'm annoyingly new to this🗿
Like UndyingNoob said, it's okay to just write "Not sure - I'm new" 🙂
So play by post, you leave messages to each other. On a forum, for instance. Play is typically slow and detailed.
Voice chat, usually with a virtual tabletop or VTT such as Roll20, Owlbear Rodeo or Foundry is the usual way to play. A VTT lets all the players see the board and roll their dice even though they're remote.
Assuming you don't have a face to face game where everyone actually meets up.
definitely picking roll20
i literally thought dnd will have something like a quick match feature, now i have to make friends to play💀
It does not
doesn't have the feature or doesn't require having friends?
Dnd is not a video game
i figured
You dont just drop it, the DM needs to prepare, the table needs to build characters for the setting, there needs to be a session zero
D&D is a game with a group of people, either in person or virtually.
watch any live play and see how much thought goes into the game
Hi guys, I've got a small server where me (and 2 other people for now) offer text-based rpg playthroughs, we three are rather similar to dungeon masters, we're looking for players to play with, could I... Possibly try advertise our server somewhere around here, please?
It's not really DnD, technically, albeit one of us does go by DnD rules...
It's like any other social gathering. There needs to be an invite list, time to prepare, and scheduling.
any suggestions?
Please don't advertise here. Post in #find-a-game but if it's not D&D then you can't advertise.
Nono, I don't mean this channel, ofcourse not xD
I mean if I could advertise anywhere in this server
You want #looking-for-community assuming it's a D&D server
To post there, you'll need to follow the instructions found in #find-a-game
If it's not a D&D server, you cannot advertise it here
Correct
