you do. when you get to the "equipement" section there should be an option right up top that says "CHOOSE: Equipment or Gold"
If you choose equipment the options will appear
yeah but i should chose equiment but what type of equiment
They will give you options in the equipment section l
you are building a paladin, correct? do you want to use a shield and give yourself more armor (harder to hit) but only use 1 handed weapons when using the shield, or have the chance to wield a two handed weapon or two one handed ones?
i have equipt some rope shield sword armor and some candles and a bag where to have my stuff
okay, so on the equipment tab of the character builder, when you look at your equipment, have you click the buttons that say "weild" "wear" or "use"? those effectively put them on your character so your sheet will update to see how they affect you (give +2 ac in the case of the shield) and add the attack action with whatever weapons you chose.
yeah i have equipt them
great. so you have your equipment ready to go.
thanks
hi everyone im like super new never played D&D always wanted to im looking to play online iv downloaded roll 20 but thats about as far iv i have got can some one tell me where i should start
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
You could find a group or learn the rules to start with (both contained above), but you will need to do both eventually.
i just didnt know if there was like a sherpa type group or anything like that?
I'm not sure what you mean?
Sherpa as in a newcomer helper group maybe
yes
Ah. Some groups are open to newbies, but you'd have to check with them specifically. There's nothing like that in the server as a general option.
thanks for the info
Hello
i have played dnd in vrchat but im returning in discord form
so im looking around discord and i found this one
Well welcome to the official D&D Discord run by Wizards of the Coast/D&D
i hope i make some fun memories here
If you're looking for a group to join and play D&D, please read #find-a-game - it has useful info and instructions on how to use our LFG channles.
We actually don't play D&D games here on this server.
We just chat about D&D

help me and my freind want to learn how to play but we dont know how and do we need equipmint
Welcome! Those link above have everything you need to get started.
You could try the videos there, if you prefer.
cheat sheet this is a very basic cheat sheet explains what you can do during combat
But reading the basic rules and the video guides will help you understand the game better
Hi there, new to the server and technically dnd lol. Just wondering, concerning:
rule 3.1 - I assume that means that asking about finding local in person games is pretty out of the question on here? Since in new to ttrpg's I want my first time as a player in person and have no idea how to find a group outside of the local game shops.
The basic rules are a light version of the player's handbook, dungeon masters guide, and monster manual
Questions about server rules belong in #moderator-support
oh awesome thanks. I'll swing over there.
HELP HOW DO I GET SOME ONE INTRESTID IN D&D
and thank you
A twist on this question how to get into D&D? š„¹
I suggest reading the rules (see pinned message in channel), watching videos/streams of folks playing D&D, try making a character or two to see how thatw orks, then go find a group to join and play D&D with.
As for how to get someone else interested in it... maybe watch some D&D liveplay videos/streams.
There's also some funny DnD content creators on every platform who do videos that would be entertaining to everyone! Not a bad way to get a person interested.
Thank you, do you have any recommendations?
The big celebrity poster child is Critical Role, but I'd also recommend looking at Dimension 20 (by the wonderful Brennan Lee Mulligan for the most part) for another look on how the system can be used
Dungeon Dude's Dungeons of Drakkenheim is pretty good. Has eldritch horror vibes but it's generally clean (not too gory or extreme and swearing is limited).
Spooky, but not grimderp, right?
Very much welcome !
Indeed! And they recently had a character death so seeing how the party deals with that has been interesting.
I ran that it was a bliss
Thank you āØ
The most important part is not getting spoilt from these - these are shows of people with lots of funding behind it, extreme dedication, so don't expect every table ever to be as much as these
Yeah the shows are entertainment first not "this is how to play D&D"
In case of questions we are available to answer ppl in here are pretty chill
Iāve seen DnD around and decided to actually act on the interest so just figuring out how and where to begin
Reading the link that was sent earlier at the moment so Iāll make sure to ask
Thank you!
As an example, I'm trying to make my campaign the best it can be, but I don't have the sheer backing to put myself in the optimum state for a human to be and dedicate hours with expert writers to craft intricate NPCs - I jot down names in a notepad and associate strong mannerisms with names I need to remember
is there a general character sheet to follow for most games if so am i able to just use the dnd beyond website (ive been made aware of the character creator on there) and does anyone recommend any vidoes/simple online guides on character making
I'm not 100% I understand what you are asking. There is a general design for Pen & Paper character sheets, and D&D Beyond is a digital recreation of this. Most DM's don't mind one way or the other what you use as your actual character sheet, but if you are concerned about it, it never hurts to ask
oo okay cool ill do dnd beyond then for simplicity tysm
What are some simple classes for me and my friends to get into in dnd?
While some classes are more simple or complex than others, its only very slight. None of them are so complicated that they can't be your first class. You can play anything you want
artificer is the best one, cus robots
I am also very found of artificer, though I will say that is one of the less beginner friendly ones. None of its game mechanics are complex per se, but it requires making a lot of customization choices, and picking from large lists of features. It can lead to a lot of choice-paralysis for a beginner
oh for sure, it is one the less beginner friendly classes, it's a whole lot of info to drop on someone instantly starting out. Personally it was my first class, so that may be why i have a huge bias towards it.
Honestly I was thinking sorcerer because of charisma and magic.
Sorcerer is a great choice
i ain't gonna lie, Arcanist is my favorite spell casting class
Arcanist?
oh sorry, i forgot to put the *in pathfinder
I am not familiar with pathfinder at all. I assume that is their equivalent to Sorcerer?
kinda, but they get a neat lil thing that lets them expend a point to raise the level of a spell by 1
if i remember correctly
This is the dnd discord specifically the channel for new comers so we try to stick to the basics
Anyways, lets keep this on topic for 5e
This is a DND discord, not a PF discord
right, sorry
so i do have a question about dnd, what to people generally use to play dnd online? i've only ever played with friends with paper and pen
@jagged badger Do you have any questions about making your first character, or how Sorcerers work?
I believe the most common way to play is Discord for voice calls, Roll20 for maps, and DDB for character sheets
oh ok, i wasn't sure if there was a sort of all-in-one program that did it all
DDB is developing a maps tool, but its still in alpha
@fallen surge Iām looking at the dnd beyond page rn. My friend wants to be a Druid, rouge, and warlock any suggestions?
fantasy grounds unity and foundry do it all, except voice
oh alright
What are you looking for suggestions about specifically? Those seem like fine choices for what classes to play. If you want help actually making the characters themselves, then the #character-discussion channel can help with that. This channel would be the place to ask if you have any questions about the basic rules, or how to get started.
Iām looking for just ease of use for my friend. Iāll go ask in there thx for the help.
rogue is certainly the simplest of those
basically any spellcaster will be more complicated
Warlock adds a small bit of complexity from their Invocations system, and Druids wildshape means you need to know and have access to multiple stat blocks for the different animals you can turn into. And of course there is choosing, and using your spells. Certainly, all of this can be learned, and there is no reason a beginner should avoid these things, but if you specifically want to play something as simple as possible, then classes that fight with weapons will be far simpler
This was double posted in #character-discussion
bc colossus redirected them there
Thanks, I went out and bought the Essentials Kit, so guess I need to find a few people to play with and see how I get on. š
whats the best class
The one that you find most fun!
im thinking about monk
hello everyone quick question I wanna run a new adventure with my friends and we went through all of the starter sets and essentials kit, do you know any good fun adventures that are new DM friendly?
Radiant citadel is super easy to run.
is that the one with multiple smaller adventures?
Yup. A bunch of one shots.
can i join
we play IRL but I would like to find and try an online game
no one around me plays dnd
I use it all the time for my public tables.
so i can only play online
niice and which one would you recommend for the longer ones
I saw at a local store Rime of the Frostmaide and Dragon Heist, are they easier to run adventures?
Theyāve actually got a little gazetteer in each one with potential story hooks if you wanted to mess around in each setting.
oh cool cool
I can use DnD beyond for my character sheet if my dm says were using theatre of the mind right?
Sure, it's just a digital character sheet.
Ty
My first campaign was canceled :(
will you make a new one?
Never played, got in a group but DM is busy so scheduleās out the window, gotta wait 3 more days until i can make a new #750812887697588356 post
allright, if you make a new one can i join?
I mean, i cant decide, i can let you know if i find a new dm tho
allright
Hey folks! I know of the struggle of trying to find a group/game to join to play D&D but please use the correct channels to organize that (read #find-a-game to learn more). This channel is intended to help new to D&D folks gets started and understand the core concepts of the game.
I would but i cant
#looking-for-players is games actively looking for players.
#750812887697588356 is where you put up a post and say that you're looking (read #find-a-game to learn how to use the bot to do that)
#looking-for-community is other D&D servers that may have games you can join there
#paid-looking-for-game is for games DMs offer for payment.
And then there's always get a bunch of real life friends together and run a one-shot together and see if folks like it
Build your own group
Speaking if which tho, you up for telling me one or two things?
That's what this channel is for
Ask a question (dnd newcomer focussed though - advanced topics are better handled elsewhere) and folks can help answer them
But go ahead and ask
K so: iāve played wh40k as TT, but never touched TTRPG, is dnd also round based? Iād imagine it in combat or similar stuff but like outside of that
Yes in D&D you roll for initiative to decide turn order, then go through each turn for a round
For D&D use of miniatures is completely optional.
- Some folks play theater of the mind where the DM describes the scene and asks players what their characters are doing (see https://www.dndbeyond.com/begin/en as an example of how this kind of works)
- Some folks play with miniatures on maps
- Some folks play online with Virtual Tabletops with digital tokens on maps
- Some folks play by simply posting text on a forum/email/Discord chat
Yeah and as Kazu noted, D&D uses initiative, rounds, and turns to handle combat
40k minis are fine to use for tabletop, just use them as proxy for knights and monsters rather than marines and tyranids, etc. I used to use a khorne berserker for a barbarian
Some folks even use paper cutout minis
So combat has turns, non combat is realtime?
Turn based
Real-time would be a doozy unless everyone knows exactly what they're doing xD
Combat is initiative turn based (each creature rolls and gets a slot in the turn order).
"Okay whoever talks first goes first"
Outside of combat is more free-form.
āReal timeā isnāt quite correct, but there are no turns outside of combat
I FIREBALL THEY ALL DIE
But sometimes for organizational purposes a DM may ask the players to roll initiative to track order in out-of-combat play.
Hm
But at the most basic level, yes this is mostly correct
For more info on initiative see https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#TheOrderofCombat
Aight
Often there's points of "DM, while they're looking at the door and the art, can I talk to the curator?" or stuff like that, since you can't overlap the DM's attention between describing said door and art, as well as a conversation with the curator
Yea makes sense
Saluti:) uhmmm... is there a specific channel for technical questions where I could find Q&A about DnDB, Roll20... any other tools that one might need to play etc?
Is it #third-party ?
D&D Beyond specifically, you can ask for help in #ddb-support because that site is directly owned by Wizards of the Coast, but everything else, you are correct that #third-party would be the place to discuss that
hellooww
hello, im new as well. looking for some one shots so i can get some expeirnece

How does equipment work for sessions that start at higher levels? Like do I just start with the starting equipment and then get the other items later or can I pick a few things my character would have?
Your dm will say
so im pretty new to DnD and i only played with a select few that barely played it or even knew the rules so i was wondering if some1 could help me get jumpstarted?

Idk if this goes here and if that seems like an inappropriate question, but is there a way to circumvent the once-per-week rule in the looking-for-[ā¦] channels? I had a group and everything seemed fine so i deleted my request so noone has to do unnecessary messaging, but in the end it got canceled and iād like to get a first session this weekend still.
Individuals can only post once every 7 days. That said nothing stops you from responding to any #looking-for-players posts or checking out any of the D&D servers advertised in #looking-for-community

I am having trouble, on creating a character (character sheet)
On how you make your stats. Or well... the whole sheet.
Speaking of stats, how can I make my modifiers
?tag new abilities
Abilities
Six abilities provide a quick description of every creature's physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
For each ability, your character has an ability score, a number from 1 to 20. There are three ways to determine ability scores, and your DM will let you know which to use. (If you donāt have a DM yet, choose Standard Array or Point Buy.)
- Roll the Dice. Roll 4d6 and record the total of the highest three. Do this six times, and then assign each total to a different ability.
- Standard Array. Assign each of the following numbers to a different ability: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Point Buy. Choose your own ability scores by spending points.
After assigning your ability scores, determine your ability modifiers, a number from -5 to +5, using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table.
Your modifiers are based directly on the ability score itself. You just look it up on the table linked at the end there.
Thank you
Is there documentation on all the tags dyno can be used with for new players?
cheers
Iām tryna get sum art for my character what ai art website would yāall recommend (Iām broke as hell and cannot afford to get art commissioned)
I think AI content isn't well regarded in this server. For making 3d avatars of characters, I could suggest Heroforge
We do not allow AI-generated work here on this server.
Hi Iām a brand new dungeon master, I tried to make a campaign based on critical role season 2 but Iām a little overwhelmed. Im thinking of starting over with a new campaign. Any thoughts?
Well I wouldn't recommend trying to be like Critical Role! That's putting way too much pressure on yourself.
If you're new to DM'ing, I'd recommend running a prewritten adventure. That way you can focus more on the mechanics of the game rather than having to create the whole plots/storyline. Lost Mines of Phandelvar is a good adventure module for new players and DMs. I've also heard good things about the Stormwreck Isles that comes from the D&D starter set.
For more support and tips and tricks, maybe check with #dm-discussion.
Are you copying the story line or making your own?
I second Lost Mine of Phandelver
Mostly copying but making it up as my players begin to do different things
One player decided to ignore everything and just ride 200 miles north
In DnD People want to play their own characters stories not the stories of stuff already done by critical role,
Also it wont be the Same since dnd from crit role and normal dnd are vastly different
On character creation it is important to have players include a reason why they want to follow the plothook
if you need advice, feel free to DM me
The best advice is don't try to copy it - don't try to railroad or script them.
You can simply use Explorer's Guide to Wildemount as your starting point
I went through the lost mines of phandelver and it seems like a good place to start
Maybe once my players and I are more experienced I can attempt something like that
Absolutely
A Trait that Half-Elf gets, giving them two skill proficiencies of the player's choice
To add to the above, here's this:
Skill Versatility. You gain proficiency in two skills of your choice.
Are you familiar with skill proficiency?
yeah i am familar but i dont get what it means by "you gain proficiency IN TWO SKILLS of your choice"
?tag new proficiency
Proficiencies
Your proficiencies define many of the things your character can do particularly well, from using certain weapons to telling a convincing lie.
The table that appears in your class description shows your proficiency bonus, which is +2 for a 1st-level character. Proficiency with weapons, skills, tools, and saving throws let you add your proficiency bonus to applicable rolls, making you more likely to succeed. Spellcasters add their proficiency bonus to their spell attack modifier and spell save DC as well.
Your character also needs to be proficient with armor and shields to wear and use them effectively. There are drawbacks to wearing armor or carrying a shield if you lack the required proficiency.
nope
i already know what proficiency is but that doesnt help me get it
like +1 proficiency for 2 skills?
Trying to recall lore on something is an Intelligence check.
Being proficient in the Arcana skill means you know a bit more when it comes to lore about magic items, spells, and eldritch stuff, general arcane matters.
So when you make an Intelligence (Arcana) check
All that's looking for is
Make an Intelligence check (adding your Intelligence modifier)
If you're proficient in the skill that is in the brackets, you also get to add your proficiency bonus on top of this
i already know those
it's not "+1 proficiency for" anything - it's saying, you have proficiency in those two chosen skills.
how many though?
Two skills.
no i meant how many proficiency?
Two skills. You choose two skills. You're proficient in those skills. So whenever you make an ability check that allows someone proficient in a certain skill to add their proficiency bonus to the check - you're proficient in these skills, allowing you to add your proficiency bonus to any check involving those skills.
sorry i reread these and still dont get it
Are you asking how much your proficiency bonus is?
maybe
let's say you're a first level wizard.
You end up with an intelligence score of 16, giving you an intelligence modifier of +3.
Let's say you gain proficiency in Arcana to represent your studies, as well as Religion.
As a 1st level character, your proficiency bonus is +2.
So when this 1st level wizard with 16 intelligence and proficiency in Arcana makes an Intelligence (Arcana) check, they have a total bonus of +5.
+3 is derived from their intelligence modifier, and +2 is from their proficiency bonus.
You can reference your Class Table to easily find what your proficiency bonus is at certain levels.
isnt this a regular proficiency skills?
Can you clarify what you mean by that?
or did i misunderstood that
what is "a regular proficiency skills"?
well i meant that is without skill versatility like every dnd character skills right?
Every DND character gets skills. Some from their class, some from their background. A few others get one or two from their race as well, such as Half Elf.
You just
get
two additional proficiencies, free to choose from any of them
int score of 16 = modifier +3 + (proficiency bonus x lvl) = +3 + +2 = +5 and then there is a you gain proficiency in arcana and doesnt really do anything with them and it kinda felt like it is just a saying
no, not prof x level.
It's prof determined by level.
having proficiency in arcana is what gives you the proficiency bonus being added to the Intelligence Arcana check.
If you use DNDBeyond, then DNDBeyond will automatically calculate it.
im brand new to dnd and ive been interested in it for quite some time, anyone willing to teach me how to set up a character sheet and play the game? i already have a character in mind

"for determined"?
What?
should i do milestone or xp advancement?
it was a line of discussion before you came in, but, whichever your DM uses.
so i can change it on the fly?
so i dont create a character before the fact?
Hey guys, hope you're having a great day!
For a long time I developed a strong interest in playing DnD. I'm a very passionate boardgame fan with a sizeable collection of games but DnD will be the first of its kind for me to give it a shot. I was pleasantly surprised to realize how similar RPG videogames can be to DnD; so I'm not new to the character progression in general. That being said, I'd like to learn the game by a person who is patient and willing to teach me the basics, because from what I've gathered, DnD is very unique and different than anything I've tried.
I understand that reading the starter book/manual is a good step and I'll make sure to do that, but I'm looking for someone who's willing to take the time to teach me the ropes in action. Don't worry, I'm very used to complex gameplay mechanics (boardgames and videogames). I'm a fast learner and love to follow rules and get as immersive as one can be in such a game. FYI, I'm a 32 year old male, my favourite RPG boardgames are Betrayal at House on the Hill and Arkham Horror. I'm not in any way expecting DnD to feel the same, just mentioning them to give you an idea of the kind of boardgamer I am. English is the language I'd prefer. I currently live in Germany, so it's good to consider the time difference.
To familiarise myself well with the game, I learned about the basic character stats and made my first character on DnD Beyond, so I believe I'm almost ready to begin. I'd really appreciate anyone who'd be willing to teach me the game; I know I'll get very addicted to this game. I am also aware that there are game sessions on the website that allow newcomers, but as an experienced boardgamer I know I can be annoying to the people I join as I'll have a million questions to ask. Your helps will be really appreciated, please let me know.
It's alright to make practice characters, but often a DM will prefer if you make your character with their game in mind. Better than making a square peg and trying to fit it into what you now find out is a round hole.
you know how there is + for combining together and minus is for the opposite and x is for duplicate and divide is for finding how many to duplicate or opposite of duplicate and i dont know what i need to use for "detemined by lvl" so i just use duplication
@pine mortar I'm not intending to be rude, but is english your second language?
eh?
so the race i want to go with isnt in the list
define
Never mind
what
@pine mortar Can you repeat your original question about proficiency bonuses
its really about how to use them and "You gain proficiency in two skills of your choice" and i dont know what is gaining proficiency in 2 skills mean does it mean gaining 1 proficiency in 2 chosen skills or etc.
You can add your proficiency bonus, dictated by your classes' chart, to checks in those skills
Proficiency in a skill means "When doing an action that uses this skill, you are permitted to add your proficiency bonus to the dice roll for that action"
i am getting insanely overwhelmed by all of this, is anyone willing to teach me personally for a short time?
Gaining proficiency in a skill means "Mark on your character sheet that you are proficient in this skill"
it just means you gain proficiency in two separate skills. So, you add your ability modifier, plus your prof bonus
There's many video tutorials going over the basics, if you're more of a visual learner rather than a reader
"Gain proficiency in two skills" just means "Pick two skills and mark down that you have proficiency in them. Then, if you perform an action that uses either of those skills, you get to add your proficiency bonus"
Most of us really don't have time and bandwidth to teach someone D&D one on one unfortunately. Please make use of the resources linked to in the pinned messages here in the channel and feel free to ask specific questions here.
ok my specific question is why cant i use the race i wanted to use in my sheet?
Which race is it?
Probably because you haven't purchased it/had it shared with you by someone who has purchased it
Only a fraction of D&D rules are free, although it is the core fraction you actually need to play
Can i not use my own race that i chose?
If you're so new to D&D that you're feeling overwhelmed, it's very inadvisable to start making your own rules
(this is commonly called homebrewing)
i didnt know there were even specific rules to dnd i thought the whole thing was freedom of choice and story
yeah, I'd definitely suggest sticking to the basics as a beginner
Nope, D&D is very much a game of rules
i wanted to do a Changeling
D&D is a game so there has to be a framework of rules to provide basic expectations and understanding of how the game works.
freedom of choice and story are both big parts, but without rules the game wouldn't function
You should check out the basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
It's more like a set of rules to help put consistency in a story.
So that there are reasons behind why someone can't just cast gigantic spells 24/7 or immediately, for example - or to govern how much damage they do to monsters.
You can find that in Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse, or in Eberron: Rising from the Last War.
you just spoke gibberish
Which are expansion books to the main rules.
See them as DLCs
wait do you mean that you can use both skills modifier and "ability scores modifier" (i forgot what to call it so i just call it "ability scores modifier") at the same time?
i think i am wrong
i aint paying for the ability to write a word on a sheet
You're not, you're paying for the rules that have been designed, developed, and balanced to function as a game
You can get the book shared by your DM
?books
There are five ways to access content on D&D Beyond that you may have in your physical books
- Purchase the full book from the marketplace
- Purchase individual elements from the marketplace (options can be found within the book description)
- Purchase a digital/physical bundle from dndstore.wizards.com
- Join a campaign with someone who already owns the book where content sharing has been enabled
- Use the homebrew tools to copy the content from your physical book into D&D Beyond. Note: Do not publish any content copied in this way, it is for personal use only
If you use DnDBeyond
wait a minute I THINK I GOT IT SO YOU DOESNT HAVE +2 BONUS IN EVERY SKILLS RIGHT??? SO THIS IS WHY I AM SO CONFUSED WITH IT
bro why am i paying microtransactions this feels like im playing an EA game
Correct, you only add your proficiency bonus to things that say you add your proficiency bonus.
It's how it's handled online, unfortunately
Happens to the best of us
SO THE SKILLS MODIFIER DOESNT EXIST
Well somebody spent time and effort writing and playtesting the rules... and I'm sure they don't eat for free. š
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sheet-pdfs/Rattyschof_112286542.pdf if you look at this character sheet I have proficiency in 4 skill
Imagine it from the original perspective
You begin by only having three books - the player's handbook, dungeon master's guide, and monster manual.
How do you get more?
by getting the other content, which is licensed content people had to write.
holy moly i am too stupid
A - your modifier
is added to B - your proficiency bonus
Because C you're proficient
Giving you D
Regarding buying D&D materials, I'll also note that with DnDBeyond you can also just purchase single classes, races, spells, and items instead of buying the whole book. Anything you purchase this way gets discounted if/when you buy the book through DnDBeyond.
alright thanks guys especially davyd
also otherworldly too
yeah i think i finally got it right

I thought dnd was making a sheet with what you want written on it obviously its stupid to make an op character and ruins the fun. A DM makes a story, i as a player join said story and play out my character withing their universe, adding payments on top of that ruins the entire experience. i am obviously in the wrong place but can anyone point me to a place where i can get that actual experience of just having fun?
Pen and paper, face to face
Or get the other books shared by a DM
No, you've got it backwards, there's no "adding payments on top"
1 more question is using the d20 for intiative optional?
If you want freeform roleplay and story telling you don't need D&D, you don't need rules
No, that's the rules
Initiative is a d20 + dexterity modifier
alr thx
so where can i go to find that experience?
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#Initiative
The default rule is as Davyd explained
You can read the full details here
Telling stories over a campfire
Look for generic TTRPG servers, forums, groups
I dunno, that's not my jam
I want D&D so I play D&D
Hence why I'm here in a D&D server
That said most TTRPGs have rules, and many require buying books/rules.
Not many are "just making stories up".
This is a DnD server. Maybe some other TTRPG servers function the way you'd like, but I haven't the foggiest idea
that makes sense i just thought the freeform thing was what dnd was
I'd says all TTPRGs have rules, the G stands for Game and you can't have a game without rules
There are loads of discord servers tagged with improv RP, you can find those in google
D&D may not be the game for you, but it's worth a try. Quite expensive though, so maybe don't buy all the books before you're sure you like it
Just roleplay servers could work for you too. No real game rules, just roleplay!
At it's core, D&D is just a set of rules that impose limitations on roleplay, which some people enjoy and some people don't
Some people even play D&D games where they focus on nothing but the rules, pretty much ignoring roleplay! I'm not a huge fan of that, but everyone enjoys the game differently
What you're describing is clay, you can pull it out of the ground for free and shape it how you like
D&D is lego; you pay for it and it only fits together in certain ways, but those limited ways they fit together makes it easier to build things
Or in gaming terms, a turn-based RPG heavy on narrative and character development
Well thanks for the help explaining, sorry if i came off as rude at all i was just insanely confused, everyone has their own styles of how they like things and i like the idea of clay over lego as that is an amazing comparison
May I suggest another game, such as Fate or Freeform Universal? You get a lot of flexibility but still get to roll dice - which is fun!
never heard of em but i will be sure to check them out, Thank you!
I bid thee farewell and wish good fortune upon your souls for many adventures to come.
#non-dnd-topics is where people can discuss non-D&D TTRPGs
Don't discount D&D though. It seems like it's got a lot of rules, and it does, but you really don't end up using half of them. Find the right group, and the sky's the limit.
ill check it out again in the future once im more knowledgable but as a beginner id like to have the freedom
how much ability points does lvl 3 character have? like lvl 1 has 27
So you determine your ability scores when you create your character, using one of the options, and from this it seems like you're looking at Point Buy.
You don't just get more points every level.
oh interesting
I don't want to sound rude, but I strongly recommend you read the basic rules before asking questions
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
Only at certain levels, do you get the Ability Score Increase feature. This lets you do one of the following:
Increase one Ability Score of your choice, by 2
Increase two different Ability Scores of your choice, by 1 each.
The one players freedom is the other players frustration. Sometimes what you want to do is not what other players want to do, and DM decicions might limit you "ultimate freedom". Rules just lay a shared foundation for the party including DM. If you want to long ve out your own fantasy without caring about anyone else, then write a book
So, for example, a wizard with 16 intelligence gaining that feature could increase it to 18 intelligence.
thx for the link i didnt know that existed
played my first session yesterday. almost got killed by a bear lol

ok cool thanks iāll try that!
Hi everyone new DM here and I have a warlock in my party, I understand that they have to choose an otherwordly patron which gives them specific spells but then do they just choose from the regular warlock spell list? I also noticed they only have until 5th level spells but then they have something called Invocations even having 9th level spells on the spell list so I don't really understand. ¬
When a warlock chooses their subclass (otherworldly patron) the spells on that subclass's spell list are added onto the normal warlock spell list that they can choose from. They do not gain them automatically. They are just extra options that could use.
I see but I also noticed tha warlocks have acces to 9th level spells such as Imprisonment but on the stat/levelling sheet at level 20 they only seem to unlock 5th level spell slots?
As for spells above 5th level, warlocks get Mystic Arcanum (invocations are something different). They are basically the same thing as a spell slot, except you cannot use it to upcast any spells, and you can only learn 1 spell per Mystic Arcanum. You cannot have two 6th level spells, for example. You assign one spell to each Arcanum, and you use that Arcanum to cast it
A warlock's normal spell slots come back when they short rest, but the Mystic Arcanum only come back when they long rest. That's the main difference
Oh so the Invocations are those extra spells listed afterwards
They aren't spells, but yes basically.
Whats the difference?
They are all special abilities or powers. Some of those abilities allow you to cast additional spells, but others might be passive buffs, and others might be crazy new abilities
Not usually, though some might say you can only do them once per long rest, or something like that. It depends on the invocation.
Thankyou very much
āAgonizing Blastā, for example, applies every time they cast Eldritch Blast, no matter what. Whereas āThief of Five Fatesā can only be used once per long rest
Last Question, for example, once he reaches 9 th level it says, Spell slots: 2, Slot Level 5th, does that mean he can have 2 spell slots total going up to 5th level or does it mean he has 2 5th level spell slots unlocked ¬
Warlocks are unique in the fact that as they level up, all of their spell slots increase in level. So when a warlock is 9th level, they have 2 spell slots total, and those 2 slots are both 5th level. They can still cast a spell that is below 5th level if they want, but that spell will be treated as if it was cast at 5th level
Oh I see thankyou
and then he can cycle through the spells known per long rest?
or does he know all of them but can only use 2 of them?
warlocks can change one of their spells each time they level up, but the others stay the same.
2 slots means that you can cast any of those spells that you know, but you can cast only 2 before your spell slots deplete and you need to take a short rest
they're not a class like, say, cleric, who chooses after a long rest which spells they have prepared
But Invocations can't be changed?

Can you reliably play DnD with others, without the Player's Handbook, by reading through the entire Basic Rules section that's for free?
And can some1 recommend me again, what to buy, if i intend to buy something? I memorized but forgot.
Pretty much, yeah
I got some money saved up and am willing to spend, but im not planning on DMing any time soon. I kinda wanna have as much content as possible, but some ppl recommended me to buy only the player's bundle, i think it's called?
If you intend to play as a player, the Player's Handbook is all you're gonna need for your first times
It has all classes, spells, equipment, info on combat, magic etc
The basic rules will cover everything you need to know how to play, and to get started. What the Player's Handbook will add is just more character options, like new Subclasses and spells
im gonna play a wizard, probably. Are there any good spells out there, i should look out for?
Ah right, i forgot beyond only has a few subclasses available for free
The basic rules only includes 1 subclass for each class, and most of the spells from the PHB, but not all of them
hm okay
Can i ask you guys for some general tips? I've watched TONS of vids and so on about DnD, i watched campaigns, im almost through reading the basic rules section and i already made a character...but it occured to me:
- My backstory is only AI generated and not really deep? I have A Backstory, but for instance, im missing the reason, why my character would go on adventure...so how would i go about that?
And 2. How do i avoid stepping on other classe's toes? I only thought about MY wizard and how I want to play him, but i realized that a bard in my group could potentially have the same spells as me, and i wouldn't wanna steal his show...
About Nr.2... you can't really prepare for that until you actually find a group, can you?
And when you buy the bundle's do you get them both physically and digitally?
-
The point of a backstory is to define your character, so that you understand their personality, and motivations. It exists as a tool to help you get more into character. The only thing that really matters is where you go from here. So, using AI to generate a backstory seems to me like it totally misses that purpose. If you randomly generate some amount of history for your character, that doesn't really help you tell your story going forward. It doesn't need to be deep. In fact, 3 or 4 bullet points is usually better than writing a short story. But it only really works if you have a specific goal or purpose in mind. That's why AI can't really help.
-
This is not really something you need to worry about. Every class, and every character has so many different things that it can do. Having a few of the same spells isn't going to step on anyone's toes
Okay, thank you
Seconding Colossus' #1. Part of the fun in a game where you play a character is to come up with that character! Even if it's a little simple or a little rocky, I'd suggest trying to come up with a backstory yourself. It'll mean so much more in the long run.
I must say, i did use ai to do the dirty work of writing, bc i wanted to go to sleep that day, but i used my idea. However, after reading through other ideas, my head is now full of different ideas that i like, and my og backstory seems disappointing now.
It was a bit simple: Half-Elf. Human Father Wizard. Elf-Cleric Mother. Father is gone. Mother raised kid alone. Kid now works in a scriptorium/library and thus has the sage background and wizard class... more or less
But after seeing what other's did, it's a bit disappointing. I've seen some1 use a table and use dices to create a character, but i don't have access to said table. I think it was in Curse of Strahd book or something?
I'll try my best and see what comes out of it
I bet i can be more creative

Hey, me and my friends have decided to get into dnd and create a group of our own. We are all beginners starting from scratch and we decided that I'm going to be the DM. So I've never played before and I'm jumping right to DM. I have a question:
-
How do the books work? If my players want to create characters with races that are not included in the free basic rules, do we need to have the associate book? Or can we just find the stats of the race on the web?
-
Same with monsters. Can I only use monsters from the free basic rules?
So to use races/classes that are not part of the free basic rules, someone in the group needs to have the book with those player options.
Same for monsters that are not in the free basic rules.
That said I'd suggest playing with just the content in the free basic rules and if you all have fun with it, decide how you all want to invest in buying additional material
Very much welcome in here
Ok, thanks!
Thank you! Nice to be here!
Something to consider is whether the group prefers physical books to digital access to materials as you can't get physical with access to digital unless you buy one of the bundles from the Wizards of the Coast's online D&D store.
Here's where you can do that: https://dndstore.wizards.com/us/
Otherwise it's physical or digital, not both.
The rules of D&D are a book. A rule book. Much like any novel, if you want to read that book, youāll need to access it legally somehow. You might have a friend lend it to you, or you could borrow it from the library, or you could buy it for yourself. The act of purchasing it isnāt like a license that you need to use that content. You just need to be able to read the book to be able to use it, and you shouldnāt pirate it, if you want to read it.
DnDBeyond does have a way for everyone to share thir books with eachother but it does require someone in the group to have a Master Tier subscription to enable content sharing on the DnDBeyond campaign.
Hey! I finally got the courage to join my first campaign, I love the role play aspect but donāt fully understand combat a whole bunch. Would anyone have any tips for better grasping the combat aspects ?? :]
Very much welcome
Have you read the basic rules for how combat works yet? Do you have any specific questions about what is confusing you?
Iāve read the basic rules !! Funnily enough I just reread them, I think Iām just getting in my head because I havenāt really played any ttrpg games before. Sorry haha just ignore my question before, I think Iāll fully grasp it once Iām actually playing!! :]
Well, the point of this channel is to help you learn, so if you have any questions, feel free to ask
So I know the basics of rules and how to play but I'm very unsure about character creation. Is there a website that allows for filling out sheets and stuff aside from dnd beyond?
Aside from just a pdf, not really
I know there are couple of apps for mobile devices, but those dont come with any official stuff outside of the basic rules I think
I think roll20 has officially licensed content as well, if I remember correctly. There character sheets are not automated though. You'll need to manually fill in and program any class features or other abilities you might have
roll20 has a "charactermancer" which automates most basic stuff
You know, this is probably a better question to ask in #third-party now that I think about it. The people in that channel will likely know more about what tools are out there
Ooh, thank yall
I didn't with the rpg bot site with all the handbooks and it's where I learned most mechanics in the game for different classes
Oh yea I've not cared about the suggestions just their breakdowns on subclasses, classes, and feats
Yeah good idea
The website itself just seems like ats all powergaming suggestions
Itās bad optimisation suggestions
Btw, āpowergamingā as you put it isnāt an inherently bad thing
Itās just a different way of playing the game
Ah ok
I've never played dnd, before can someone help me?

It means you should read/watch the stuff in that post to learn about dnd?
So just read through the rules for a bit?
Yep
Any chapters in particular or should I read the whole thing?
First four of the basic rules minimum but all is better
Hi guys, new here. Do I need to make a character for a campaign or is that somethin the DM does?
You need to make your own character
How does DC and AC work?
AC is what you need to meet or beat for an attack roll
DC is the same, but for an ability check or saving throw
How do ability checks/ saving throws work?
Sorry if im a bit obnoxious I just don't find the rule book specific enough for me
I recommend re-reading that section
But those rolls are made when the DM tells you
Ability checks
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/using-ability-scores#AbilityChecks
For every ability check, the DM decides which of the six abilities is relevant to the task at hand and the difficulty of the task, represented by a Difficulty Class. The more difficult a task, the higher its DC. The Typical Difficulty Classes table shows the most common DCs.
Saving throws
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/using-ability-scores#SavingThrows
To make a saving throw, roll a d20 and add the appropriate ability modifier. For example, you use your Dexterity modifier for a Dexterity saving throw.
A saving throw can be modified by a situational bonus or penalty and can be affected by advantage and disadvantage, as determined by the DM.
Each class gives proficiency in at least two saving throws. The wizard, for example, is proficient in Intelligence saves. As with skill proficiencies, proficiency in a saving throw lets a character add his or her proficiency bonus to saving throws made using a particular ability score. Some monsters have saving throw proficiencies as well.
The Difficulty Class for a saving throw is determined by the effect that causes it. For example, the DC for a saving throw allowed by a spell is determined by the casterās spellcasting ability and proficiency bonus.
The result of a successful or failed saving throw is also detailed in the effect that allows the save. Usually, a successful save means that a creature suffers no harm, or reduced harm, from an effect.
Both rolls the DM calls for them and which ability check to use.
When would you typically need to make a saving throw?
Generally when youāre targeted by some spells, targeted by an aoe like a dragonās breath, or you trigger a trap
When the DM says, usually with a spell or an effect.
Thereās plenty of other things tho
Thanks for the help
I would recommend watching Critical Roll's "Handbooker Helper" tutorial videos on Youtube (linked in the pinned message above).
How do I find a game
Check out #find-a-game
when people say "homebrew content" what do they typically mean?
stuff that's made by fans of the game, it's all unofficial
Using stuff not officially published by WotC.
Hi I am a noob
Welcome! If you havenāt yet, check the pinned messages here in the channel.
samee
I feel like the closest explanation is
The Player's Handbook, Dungeon Master's Guide, and Monster Manual, are the base game.
The other books are more like DLC - extra stuff you can add or integrate.
Homebrew is like community mods.

I got the starter set of Dragons of Stormwreck Isle and im just figuring it out how to play by watching guides and all
there's A LOT of skills to remember wow that matches with an ability
You'll have a character sheet to remember for you
All you'll need to do as a player is reference your sheet for the things you can do
And as a DM, I don't remember everything off the top of my head, it's more like a web of connections. So I remember X ability, so I remember Y skills associated with it, rather than remembering them all individually and associating it backwards.
Yup! But I'm trying to figure out like, what some of these things means. Like one the character sheets, there's a dark circle for perception with a +3, and then there's a profesicency bonus of a +2 and Widsom of +1
I'm like just trying to figure all of that out by going through the booklet
that's a lot of + haha
So, your Wisdom (Perception) check
is made up of your Wisdom modifier (the +1)
Since you're proficient in the Prception skill, you get to add your proficiency bonus (the +2) to those Wisdom (Perception) checks.
So you have a total of +3 for those checks
An Ability Check is basically just roll a d20 and add the modifier of the ability. So a Wisdom check is roll a d20 and add your Wisdom modifier.
When it has the name of a skill in brackets, it means that if you are proficient in that skill, you get to add your proficiency bonus to the check.
So if you aren't proficient, it's +1 for wisdom modifier, and nothing else.
If you are proficient like you detailed, it's +1 for wisdom modifier, +2 for proficiency as you say, and thus a total of +3.
so for perception for that character, its a +3
Correct
got it! Yeah that makes it simplier cause I thought it was something seperate
Yeah, it's just an addon. If someone has 20 wisdom score for a +5 wisdom modifier, they're going to be pretty good at perception. But if they're proficient they'll be even better at it.
But sometimes, a DM might call for a Wisdom check with no skill associated with it. Or, they might call for a Wisdom (Insight) check, or a Wisdom (Medicine) check. And now looking at the array of skills, there's some things you're trained in, and some things you're not
So, for example, Intelligence is good for recalling lore on things. But skill proficiencies reflect specific avenues - Arcane knowledge such as magic items spells and the planes of existence, or Religion for deities, celestials and fiends, or History for the general history of the world from events to ancient civilizations and old wars, or Investigation when you're trying to deduct information from clues.
so those are like the ones where there aren't a dark circle next to the skills right?
The dark circle is there saying "I am proficient"
A Wisdom check would just be clicking the modifier button on your Wisdom score, whereas specific skills are along the big list that goes down.

could someone do a DM for me and my two other friends? we want to start but we dont know anything or how to run a dnd
thinking and just trying to match everything so I can make sense out of it
Anyone know what the app or website is called that lets you create a character?
There are many options. D&D Beyond is popular and simple, but is often considered a hindrance to people learning the game. It's also quite buggy.
Dicecloud is very powerful, though a little more work. It automates everything for you.
The best option in my opinion is neither an app nor a website, but a paper sheet. As a new player, a paper sheet means that nothing's being hidden from you, and you will understand the rules better as a result of it.
ok yeah that part I get, with the manual I got. Each Ability has different skills that you can do/be good in
š
A paper sheet is also very straightforward - you can find a sheet here that you can print off, or fill out as a PDF.
Thank you
Been trying to get into DND for a while now but I never really understood how everything works
?tag new
No tag new found.
Just scroll up in this channel and you'll see a post detailing the basics of how to get into DND, from the Dyno bot.
And so, IF I have a dark circle next to a skill, I can add the proficiency bonus to it?
On DNDBeyond it automatically does that, but yes, the dark circle is the marker that you are proficient in the skill.
okkk
On a paper sheet, you'd similarly fill them out - your Intelligence (Investigation) bonus is derived from your Intelligence modifier, and then if you're proficient (via your class or background for example) you mark that skill as proficient and add your proficiency bonus to the total modifier
I will be free during the weekend, is there any chance I'd be able to join a game or something?
DND isn't so much for a 'drop in' style of game - it typically requires some kind of extensive organization to start and run a game.
I know there are DnD video games, are those also maybe a good start to getting into DnD?
I know there's BG 3
or are the tabletop games a completely different things
Many are based on older editions of DND
So how would I go about doing that?
they're somewhat similar... but very different. learning one will make it easier to learn the other, but it doesn't mean you've learnt the other
BG3 is based on 5e, but it takes many creative liberties to adapt it to a videogame, so... many many rules are altered.

For rolling attributes, do I roll 6 sets and apply those rolls to the attribute I want or is the correct way to do them sequentially starting from strength
you get a total of 6 scores
Assign each score to an ability of your choice
Oh perfect thank you
It's not in-order, but it's also not 6-tries-per-ability
No of course not, I'm only questioning as during an introductory game, we were asked to roll them in order, I think maybe that was just to get things moving quickly
Did you have to pick your class first?
Yeah we did
Thats very strange
It was for complete beginners and a lot more people showed then expected he did mention it was not going to be as strict to keep things moving and not get bogged down by all the specific details
It was fast moving and enjoyable, but now that I've got some time to actually build a character i'd like to do it correctly š
Ahh I see
If you want to go step by step and have someone build with you let me know
That's very kind, but I think I've finished creating my sorcerer now, one question out of curiosity, I'm using DnD beyond, I initially opted for Human Variant understanding the option of choosing a feat, but it seems I was randomly assigned a type? As such there wasn't a full list to actually choose from?
Nonetheless I've gone for standard humans for now, but was a bit perplexed
What do you mean a type? Like a creature type?
Or do you not own the dnd books to choose the feats from on beyond?
Ah I'm unable to share a screenshot, but the only feat available is grappler on initial creation when selecting Human Variant as the race
Ahh
Yes, its because it locks the others off if you dont have the books owned on dndbeyond
Ohh I see, thanks
You can edit it manually on dndbeyond right?
Edit what manually?
The text box of a feature
It was a drop down, so looks like the other options aren't available
It's ok for now, I'll stick with Standard Human for the +1 all abilities
maybe don't stick with standard human - it is by a considerable margin the weakest race in the game... and isn't really that fun to play doesn't add fun in ways that other races don't, it's just a blank slate
Do you also use dndbeyond to play? if so when you get into a game it'll give you access to the books of the DM, and you can just add it then
Or if you dont use it to play we can just export it as a pdf and add it
Eh that last part isnāt true if youāre creative enough
I will use it yeah. Doing the pencil and rubber thing was fun and novel the first time, but got tedious š
I do agree that itās hard for a newcomer to make an engaging story for a human bc thereās not much structure to go off of
I've edited it to be a bit more representative, what do you think of that?
Yea, you have to make a human interesting, lucky for you, you can do that.
Thanks for the guidance, Human for me at this time is a tad easier to come up with a character backstory and well... with my limited knowledge of lore knowledge, hopefully means its somewhat more believable
Yeah

Iām a complete beginner but i really want to learn

- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
What did you want to start with?
Hey I just played through the dnd beyond intro. I have seen a lot of dnd and it seems awesome and I just want to get into it. I donāt know where to start Iāve read a little of the rules
Have you looked at the basic rules?
well a few? but not all of em yet
The first few chapters are character creation, if you use dndbeyond there is a beginner help txt box you can tick on character creation
https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLPjdPog_vKX1vnjf68Sx2jcq1OtVUSA2i&si=ynXmO2EDG78KMf87 hereās a play list on how to make 4 of the classes from dndbeyond
man timezones screwing over hard at any attempts
yeah its difficult to find an online game if you dont live in the americas. my advice is to look for games on weekends, so you are more flexible with your time
I am struggling when making a wizard. How many spells can I get from the start? On dndbeyond it allows me to add as many as I want but I doubt this is how it is supposed to work
Cantrips
At 1st level, you know three cantrips of your choice from the wizard spell list. You learn additional wizard cantrips of your choice at higher levels, as shown in the Cantrips Known column of the Wizard table.Spellbook
At 1st level, you have a spellbook containing six 1st-level wizard spells of your choice. Your spellbook is the repository of the wizard spells you know, except your cantrips, which are fixed in your mind.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/wizard#ClassFeatures
6 in your spell book and you can only prepare a certain amount a day
On DnD Beyond, Wizard allows you to add as many spells to your book as you want because you could be finding spell scroll or spell books during a game, so every wizard will have different amounts of spells in their book.
yeee but the main pain is that... i cannot be getting up at 3 am whether it weekdays or ends
most end up being around midnight to morning š
But you need money and paper to actually write down the spell for usage
yes but thats in game, your sheet doesnt know how much time you have or how much gold etc.
It indicates to read #find-a-game for the rules and method to do so
Can you have feats at 1st level?
By being a Variant Human
or by being in a campaign that provides a feat at 1st level, such as Dragonlance or Planescape (or a DM just saying their campaign also does provide it)
my friends from school introduced me to dnd, but now that we've graduated and are all busy, im not sure how to find people to play with anymore, especially since im still relatively new and dont know what im doing most of the time
IRL or online
either
Look for local games stores, libararies, comic book shops. Ask around youāll find some dnd nerds hiding somewhere
#find-a-game has the details for looking here
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1fqCm4tA5Y_WxlqgryUM_iaz3l7B3zZ0m/view good guide to finding games online (credit iamrazorwing)
thanks!
Since rituals do not count thowards the amount of wizard spells in the spellbook, could you just add those on top? Or do you need to put them in the spellbook?
You need to have a spell in your spellbook to cast it, ritually or otherwise. They would count toward your starting spell number.
Hi uhh let's just say I have no idea how to play but I wanna learn how to play DND š
Wizards are unique in their ability to ritual cast a spell without having it prepared, but only if that spell has been added to their spellbook through the usual means.

But if you have any questions, ask away!
If you buy stuff on DnDBeyond, do you get it digitally AND physically or how does it work? Can it be used on Roll20?
D&D Beyond only provides digital copies of the material. If you want physical and digital copies you need to purchase one of the bundles from Wizards' online store. Purchasing on D&D Beyond doesn't give you access to material on Roll20 as they are completely separate websites
Roll20 has its own Marketplace store that sells digital books that works for its website only.
What is the best subclass for low iq rogues š
I have a question. So I've played DnD one time and fallen in love with it... but I was told that DMs often have different rules/ways they play. Does that include different ways that the character sheets are filled out as well?
Low iq being 9 in intelligence
I appreciate the laugh anyways
most prefer dndbeyond for character sheets from what ive seen
Does getting your stats work the same way with everyone? I was told to roll a D20 3 times, take out the smallest number and add the two other ones together.
Some DMs have house rules they use for minor things but most stick to the core rules and character creation is one of them
that is what dndbeyond does as well except 4 d6 n take out the smallest
Okay, thank you so much ā¤ļø
Ima just say swashbuckler
Can you play as a werewolf character
Full on Werwolf only with DM approval but if you just want yo say you play a Werwolf, the Shifter Race you can find in Mordekainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse are people with ties yo lycanthropy and playing one as a Werwolf is rather common
i do love the version of a player getting afflicted with a curse and now has to bear that burden
Should I put sidekick stats on character sheets?
Sidekicks have their own character sheet.
Where. I mean I can print their stat blocks but I haven't seen a sheet to fill out
I just fill it out and give it to the associated PC
I knowDMs Guild has one available. Not sure if Wizards has one for download or not.
DnDBeyond has sidekicks/beasts/familiars in the Extras tab on the front end of the sheet.
Hi, im new to dnd, and i wanted to ask, is it bad if, when i create my characters i use the same name but with different story, backstory, classes, personality and such?
Thatās probably something to ask your group.
Would this be a good channel to ask for help with making my character?
Certainly
I'm making my first character but I'm having trouble with making him a well rounded character, any recommendations or tips?
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1MyDWjT2N8hiWlaxIq5J64BpUf_C3AGwxxgydn0RJAf0/edit?usp=drivesdk

I also have a reddit post with the same content on the doc

do som body have a canpinen
Check #looking-for-players (and also might be a good idea to read #find-a-game)
Trying to find games outside of the LFG channels is considered off-topic and will be moderated.
Well he seems more of an independent recluse than a team-player, with a personal motivation rather than a universal.
A good Adventurer should be able to work with anybody, and unless you can work with the DM, you story won't corrolate with the campaign
Also this is meant to be a general idea of his backstory because I don't currently have a group, I can make any needed adjustments when I do
how do I post in the looking for DM chat?
Read (carefully) #find-a-game - it has useful info and instructions on how to use the bot to create a post in the #750812887697588356 channel.
thank you
And don't share your exact age - we have to delete those posts because that's against server rules.

brand new to all this wanting to learn how to play
how can i fined a campaign that just started
that is... not normal
anything except arcane trickster, mastermind, and inquisitive
Okay I have a question. So when people group up on here to play DnD, is it just voice chat? I ask because I have only done it in person before and we had a whole table and map and figurines.
how long do dnd games last
cause i don't wanna play for like 10 hours straight or something
anywhere from 2 hours to 6 hours - often just 3-4 hours.
That's just sessions - an actual campaign might take a session weekly for months to complete.
okay
There's no set time, it's just for as long as people can actually... play
can you find dnd campaigns based on time
So if you were able to super easily access food and water all the time, and had a free week, you could technically not need to take a break - but the DM also needs to prepare material so they might run out and have to end it, to prepare for next session
Hello I'm completing new to DnD but it's my dream to play. Can somebody help?

You'd have to use #find-a-game. However, DND isn't entirely compatible with "drop in" style, it often requires some deal of preparation on the part of both sides.

Evening all!! I am thinking about getting back into the game. Last time I played was 3.5e; the little bit I have read reminds me 5e is similar to 1e. Is that a fair statement?
There is some familiar concepts in 5e yes. But it is distinct enough to be it's own game system.
I see that characters go to level 20. Is there anything after that??
Nope - D&D 5e is only designed to go to level 20. And even then ganerally most games tend to peter out around level 15 or so.
The one thing I really liked about 3.5e was the prestige classes
that's unfortunate
Well some groups run with after you get past level 20 you can get more hp but no ability but that is just home brew
thank you all!
No prob
welcome !
The only thing after 20 levels of advancement is Epic Boons, by the books.
again, thanks. So it looks like things have sort of gone back to the original way!! š
Does anyone have tips for making a good character?
it might not be what you want but what i like to do is pick a race as your template, search up the race on google and look at the images
and mainly don't try to make you're character super optimised - instead try to envision what class your character might be based on it's backstory
Im mainly having trouble on making a character with depth, I'm not the best at writing that kinda stuff
Also I don't care about it being optimized as long as it isn't absolute garbage and is also fun
Hey guys⦠I have put up a post for dungeon master so I can play with my friends but we still havenāt got one⦠and today like⦠in around 6 hours is the only time most of us can play⦠would there be anyone willing?
personally i nick some backstory traits from media I've seen recently subconsciously and then realise later on lol. In terms of depth i'd say a good starting point might be to roll of some sort of flaws table, so you can get to start to know your character (or make them up)
I have but Iām getting kind of desperate at this pointā¦
And you can only post once a week?
Maybe try some forums
Whereās that⦠new to discord as well sorry
It's not on discord, just any forums, DNDbeyond, reddit, etc
Ohhhh right thanks
ive sent u a msg btw
Do you have any tables like that?
We need dm can anybody help
https://www.gmbinder.com/share/-L4DhWR5zMZdK5kQpMqX - Stuff like this is good, doesn't need to be set in stone and don't be afraid to re-roll if you want to
hi guys
Thanks
eh they can optimise their character if thats what they think they would enjoy
yeah if that's what you're into, just my opinion
i think it depends on how combat-y the campaign is gonna be
Anyone have tips, templates, questionnaires, etc that could help me make a basic backstory?
Bullet point list of why your character is adventuring instead of working somewhere safe and fit it to the game/setting your character is playing in.
Ideally work with your DM and group
There's this post from D&D Beyond: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1462-creating-a-backstory-for-your-first-d-d-character
A handy video from Pointy Hat: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LLVJrK22gVA
Xanatharās Guide to Everything has a whole section for that.
A common trap for new players is to give too much information, especially for a level 1 character (meaning you generally haven't done much as an aspiring adventurer). Respect your DM's time by trying to keep it relatively brief, and don't nail down every little detail. The more open-ended your backstory is, the more you and the DM can collaborate.
Where you're from, why you're adventuring (the catalyst), and what you want to accomplish by adventuring are good prompts to answer.
That's the kind of stuff I'm trying to make, a general easy to modify backstory just to give some explanation as to why my character is how they are
Question. My wife and I just bought the starter set and noticed the pre-made character sheets inside. Our group already has self-made characters so do we need to use the pre-made ones?
Nope!
Some folks are intimidated by the character-creation process (and it can be tricky for a new player), so the pre-gens are there just as an option.
Ok thanks! That's what i figured. I was just curious cuz i know that the rest of our group would be bummed out if they couldn't use the characters that they spent so much time on lol
How do I play?
Well like most games, it helps to become familiar with the rules (check pinned messages here in this channel).
Then maybe watch some folks play the game (YouTube and Twitch D&D streams - but remember these are entertainment first and less about "how to play D&D")
Then maybe try your hand at creating a character sheet or two (again refer to the free basic rules linked to in the pinned messages).
Then find a group and start playing!
Ok thank you so much
Opinions on my basic character backstory?
Min Escul, a young Kobold Battle-smith, was born and raised in his underground nest, surrounded by the tight-knit community of his tribe. However, one day, his nest was raided by a group of brutal bandits who kidnapped and forced him and his kin to do their bidding.
(A): After managing to escape, Min is determined to seek justice and/or vengeance for his people by joining a band of adventurers.
(B) Min was saved by a group of adventures, and to show his gratitude he joins the band of adventures.
A sounds more believable
Overall itās simple but I like it
You could try and put more emphasis on why heās a battlesmith tho
It has two options to be more flexible
And the battle-smith thing I plan to go into more detail at a later point
K
I've a question, is there a fixed list of deities a paladin can follow? Or can I make one up?
Paladins donāt have to follow a deity at all
Their power comes from an oath, a list of tenets they follow
Oh, I thought the oath came from a religious order, which meant a deity
As for generally deities to follow, thereās a list of official deities in the forgotten realms (the default dnd setting), but it depends on the world the dm uses
Nope
Yeah, oath of the ancients is a great example of that
Same with crown
Even glory, you could achieve glory through twisted means
Really oathbreaker and oath of devotion are the only ones that are kinda morally locked
I see, I ask because I wanna play a Dwarven blacksmith and I want them to really care about making the best and rarest creations.
They could be an artificier but I thought a paladin could work too and that sounds more fun to me
Yeah. Thereās also forge cleric as another option
And also think abt the fact that anyone can be a blacksmith, regardless of class
So donāt let that limit your class choice
I see, thank you!
A creation bard could be flavored to fit
Mechanically challenging for a new player tho
@steep flame about your question in #dnd-rules , one of my ways to introduce newcomers to spell slot is this:
Think of it as of a backpack that holds your memories of attack, you put in it the attacks you want for the rest of the day until you get back home to your liking.
ah i see and depending on the spell a higher slot would needed in the "backpack" thank you
What is the best module to run for new players?
Dragons of icespire peaks or lost mines of phandelver
hola
Hi
Anyone play on d&d beyond?
D&D Beyond is a website/app for digital character sheets and digtal books.
You don't play on it. You can play with it though.
Oh gotcha thought it was a way to play online with people
Itās a way to help with playing online with people
D&D Beyond is just a tool you can use in person or online play.
How much tinkering freedom do artificers have?
As much as their class rules on infusions say they can.
Hello all, I am a new dm and I've got some questions that I haven't been able to answer in the phb
what are the questions?
My players have befriended a flying snake which they have lovingly dubbed "sneaky pete" Im trying to stay impartial but I dont want anything to happen to this snake haha, I've been trying to see if there is any armor that could be specially made since this snake almost nothing for hit points, or could I "level up" a flying snake? The phb does say small beasts can wear armor...
Sidekick rules! Found in TCoE, Tasha's Cauldron of Everything.
Thanks! I'll check it out
hey everyone ! is there a way to be able to make interactive (like on dndbeyond) character sheets but that would include Tasha and Xanathar?
buy tashas and xanathars on ddb
yes but I'm looking for alternative website or apps
I have a question about the alignments
like how do you redeem physical copies
The legal alternatives that do not require buying them are:
Borrowing from a friend
Library
you cant
yeah?
[Prepares to scratch alignment on the D&D Bingo card]
lol
If i were to be neutral, and rp my character that they have never killed anyone, can I rp that I gwt my first kill in the story?
yeah sure? that doesnt really have much to do with alignment
You can RP however you want.
Remember that alignment doesn't define your character but the other way around.
I was just watching a video and the dm said "Your a lawful good, you wouldn't kill a team member"
That is a table specific call between DM and player
hi
Well, that's because a LG character wouldn't kill a teammate. If they did then they're no longer LG...
Alignment has zero mechanical effect on your character
Use it a a loose guideline or not at all
infact generally killing a teammate is frowned upon, no matter alignment
Use Personality, Bonds, Flaws, and Ideals to shape and define your character.
It was cause the theif stole something that was supposed to help the session continue, and wouldn't give it back
again that is a table interaction that goes beyond alignment
Also one more question, how do the levels work
Cant find a single video that doesn't confuse me
What specifically about leveling do you have a question about
I recommend you watch Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" tutorial videos on Youtube. It's linked in the pinned message at the top of this channel.
each level gives new features
and increases your hp
How do I find this video
"It's linked in the pinned message at the top of this channel."
It is recommended new players check out all of the materials here:

how do i play with people
First read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
ima just watch a how to play d&d video
That's a start but you should read the rules eventually. D&D is a game of rules.
can we call?
Call?
i made my first character his name is Arkrus. He is a Tiefling that is a wizard, he is a previous soldier that is chaotic evil
^^ sounds interesting
just expect that you will not be able to play this character in every group
the most D&D games are around heros and a mixture of good and evil aligned characters more often will lead to terrible dispute between the players and not only their characters
he was just a test but i based his personality traits off Tom Ellis from lucifer
the lucifer in this series wouldn't be lawful evil as per DnD terms š
sorry but I already have some groups and I wouldn't be to shy to play in english language š I'm happy enough that others might understand what I'm writing
itās my first time playing dnd with some friends who have also never played, im the dm, any tips for the story?
can i play with you
idk how to play online and i just started with some friends so š
Please use the correct channels to solicit/post games (read #find-a-game). Posting your games or trying to find a group/game to join outside of the LFG channels is off-topic and will be moderated if you continue.
And when I state "read #find-a-game" I do mean read it carefully. It has useful info and instructions on how to use the bot to post in the appropriate channel.
So how would I play in combat a light foot halfling rogue swashbuckler
Think about your character's strengths and class features and work with your group to utilize those features for best impact in combat. So typically try and find flanking options, ways to give yourself and your allies advantage for increased likelihood of hitting, making sure you can get sneak attack damage as much as you can, things like that.
do i need the stuff irl to play dnd online
depends on your group if you are allowed to play with online tools in session like dndbeyond
if not: pen, paper, character sheet and a set of dice for dnd

^^ but if your dm or some other player might be a dice goblin they could even lend them the dice
Ghost ping oop
Nvm
i didnt know that
The game designers have stated that they are intending the new rules updates to be compatible with the current D&D 5th edition rules. For more discussion on these updates, we have #1026901431132885064 where folks discuss the current playtests.
I took a look on the nice https://dnd.wizards.com/start-playing-dnd and found a (for me) new Learn To Play adventure for younger players, Peril in Pinebrook. A nice find I wanted to share.šÆ
Can confirm usually we got alot of clickity clackity
Hey, I'm new to DnD, and my personal conundrum was that I want to find a game to play that doesn't require a high amount of commitment (to get used to DnD and how it can fit into my schedule); is there any way to find such a game, or any type of game I should look for?
there's oneshots, which are shorter adventures that last 1 to 2 sessions, depending on the DM and the type of oneshot
Westmarches and Adventure League can also fit that bill
spirit guardian says hiii#
Westmarches are larger groups with multiple DMs and players, where DMs will run episodic adventures set around the same location, and any player available at the time the DM can run can try and join. Tend to be a little more haphazard, but can work with a uncertain schedule and more casual engagement.
Adventure League is official organised play. You make a character according to AL rules, and theoretically you can join any AL table that is running a game appropriate for your PC level and has space. Meaning folk can jump in and out of games fairly easily.
Hi, so, if i want to buy the physical AND the digital bundles..... from the main WOC website....can they be used on DnDBeyond?
Thank you! š
And the PHB is all i need?
Technical the Basic Rules is all you need.
But the PHB expands on that with a lot more character options.
How balanced is the sub class artificer? I want to play the alchemist but im too scared its worst then the other sub classes
Alchemist is probably the weakest of the four, but that doesnāt mean you canāt have fun with it.
i wanna learn dnd and start playing
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.

Same here
i created a character in dnd beyond
Those guides and links can help a lot, and when ever you have a question you can ask away here.
Making a character def helps pick up some of the rules, so now you just need to find a game. You might need to remake the character or make a new one, as houserules can differ between tables.
so where do i find a game that opens to a new player is there a channel for that
#find-a-game can help. Other advice is looking for in person games at local game stores, libraries, facebook or meetup.com, and for online games it's to be patient and perservere. It can be a bit like online dating- you'll need to put yourself out there, apply to a few games, see if you get along with folk, and eventually build up a group.
Oneshots, Adventure League and Westmarches can all be good low commitment games to see if you get along with people.
It can take a while to find a game and even longer to find your 'forever table'.
to be honest in my country like no one knows it or to be precise in the city i live no one knows
Yea it varies sometimes a week sometimes a month or longer
What about the guides to everything books. Xanathar's and Tasha's Guide/Cauldron to everything?
I want to make a divination wizard perhaps and im not sure what cantrips to take and some seem pretty good, but are only from those books..
Those are also great expansion books to get if you have the money
heh š
also campaigns on dnd beyond can the dm decide to share his stuff to his party
Oh! That's cool!
But only if he's subbed, right?
yeah..
and cuz im buying all books anyway
I'll probably get the PHB and see if i can find a DM who has that.. but i assume most don't, right?
do anyone know of any communities that i can join and learn from there a good one
i was asking if you know a good one but yeah i could search for more
That i cant answer
i was mainly dm my whole life
For the armorer sub type artificer do you need high strength stat or no
Not necessarily.
Youād be able to use INT for the armorās built-in weapons, and ignore any STR requirements for the armor itself.
(But Iād still put STR or DEX in the top three.)
the urge to play dnd but all friends campaigns barely ever happen and all the server campaigns being full š
tis a tragedy indeed
suffering
Thats step 1 to become dm wheeze
It's already happening..
My first char got killed by a vorpal sword by a unbalanced encounter from a dm since that day im the dm for that group
+3 to accuracy, +3 to damage, if you roll a 20 the thing instantly dies
if it crits instant decapitation
ty fellow spooktober enjoyer
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack! He left it dead, and with its head.
holy crap
And you got critted, didn't u
Yes
Is 14 too young to play d&d
I really want to play dungeons and dragons but all the campaigns I find interesting seem to be 18+ only
Nope. But be aware many online tables may have age restrictions.
Not to young @merry sequoia I started playing a 6
Is there anyway to sort age restrictions?
Depends on where you're looking. Try checking for games that say "New players welcome" or words to that effect, and contacting the DM directly.
is there an easier way to find parties besides just looking for players
i keep searching
and there always seem to be a reason i cant join or i would literally have to play at 4 in the morning
Other services for meeting players exist, such as Roll20.
i only have the starter set does that mean i cant play dnd
do i need the handbook as well
The Basic Rules are all you need to play D&D, which are available for free and are included with the starter set.
i want to play the artificer but dnd beyond doesn't seem to have it as a class
Artificer isnāt part of the Basic Rules. You would need to purchase the class, the book(s) itās in, or have someone with that content share access with you.
so i cant play artificer
Not unless you have access to it through official means.
Start with what you've got. Best of luck!
so how could i buy the set that has the artificer
or is there a class that is also high intelligence
wizard
All wizards, arcane trickster rogues, and eldritch knight fighters all need INT.
To get artificer, you need to buy any artificer subclass from Eberron: Rising from the Last War or Tashaās Cauldron of Everything. Or buy either book in full.
basically, I wanted to play a mute noble, and the whole reason he became I want my character adventurer was to find his fiance who is an elven princess or something like that who went back into the fae wilds for like days but for him, it's been like three or more years and he finally got the courage to get out of his castle to find her
so what would be the best class for the character im describing
Thereās nothing in there that ties you to a specific class, honestly. You could be anything with that.
Also, mute characters are often an impediment to the game. Communication is central to a lot of how play proceeds.
i wanted to play a character who has high intelligence and low charisma and strength
100%. Maybe find a group first, @merry sequoia , see what kind of games are on offer, then make a character.
Making a character acquaints you with the rules. Ideally, you make a character with the expectation itāll be tweaked to fit the game.
No worries. Thatās what the channel is for.
In no special order: learn the rules. Find a group. If youāre a player, work with your DM to make a character. If youāre the DM, work with players to devise an adventure.

Okay!
Do you guys play dnd in the server
No games happen here.
š²
there are groups that search for players but games happen either on other discords or roll20,foundry etc
how do you find dm interested in players?
i keep getting ghosted or they say 18+ only
Well alot also are very busy
Im intrested and in players
and the 18 + thing is simply their table rule
Search more broadly? I made this guide with other avenues to search for games/groups: #third-party message
which i also use simply since all my players are above 18
Hi may I ask, for the characterās backstory, is it in direct relation to the campaign or is it something you create beforehand?
thats up to you with your dm
