I tend to have Con as my second- or third-highest stat. I'm very cautious.
Same.
So I'd do here WIS > CON > STR, or WIS > STR > CON.
Skills
A skill represents a specific aspect of an ability score. Proficiency in a skill lets you add your proficiency bonus to ability checks that involve that skill, making you more likely to succeed.
- Strength. Athletics
- Dexterity. Acrobatics, Sleight of Hand, Stealth
- Constitution. (none)
- Intelligence. Arcana, History, Investigation, Nature, Religion
- Wisdom. Animal Handling, Insight, Medicine, Perception, Survival
- Charisma. Deception, Intimidation, Performance, Persuasion
Write your ability modifier next to each skill for that ability. If you’re proficient with that skill, add your proficiency bonus as well.
Check the last paragraph there. ☝️
That also applies to the Saving Throws box.
So if you're sticking with that +0 STR, you'd write that +0 next to Athletics.
um im kinda confused
Where are you stuck?
so I put +0 in the strength boxes?
Yep!
So for STR saving throws and Athletics.
On the lines where you've filled in the little circle on the left, you get another +2 from your proficiency bonus.
only for the ones I selected?
The proficiency bonus applies only to the ones you selected.
For the ones you didn't select, it will equal your ability modifier.
So STR saves are a +0, since you're not proficient.
WIS saves would get your +4 WIS and another +2 prof, so +6 total.
ohhh
Proficiency is a way to represent you're better at a skill or saving throw by having a higher number. So someone with a +0 STR score would have a +0 in Athletics, whereas someone with that same STR score but proficiency in Athletics would have a +2.
In short, it makes you more likely to succeed at those things.
Looks right for the ones you're proficient in, yeah.
You'll still want to fill in the ones without proficiency as well.
(So don't add that +2 to those.)
Looks good!
I’m new
My paladin has a 6 Dex

@supple wolf The links above should get you started.
Why? Do you just pray you never have to roll dex?
Someone with heavy armor and other priorities.
You just hope no one ever shoots an arrow at you?
That’s what heavy armor is for.
Your dex has nothing to do with that if you are wearing heavy armor
I rolled poorly and it's a dump stat for heavy armour wearing paladins.
I think the low Dex is great for RP purposes. I play her as a klutz.
Ok, Paladin, kinda get it
But still
Heavy armor doesn't let you add your Dexterity modifier to your Armor Class, but it also doesn't penalize you if your Dexterity modifier is negative.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/equipment#HeavyArmor
That's why I prefer Point Buy but when I was playing the DM had us roll.
A decent dex roll doesn't hinder your focus
Focus?
Dex is a dump state for a front line heavy armour wearing paladin.
Not literally, I mean your main stat
I think we're drifting away from the topic here.
Not main, actually, but one you care about, toward the top
I'm just failing whenever I try, do your thing, lol
hola
Hey there
im new here
Welcome!
I need some help with a bloodhunter character if someone has played them before
What kind of help?
nice to meet u all
I'm kind of confused by it to be frank
By what specifically?
making it ig? I'm doing it on the blank sheet paper cuz I don't want to spend money on d&d beyond
So I'm kind of confused....
What do you have so far? Where are you stuck?
Mmmm hold up
The more specific your questions, the better we can give you specific answers.
Can files be sent in here?
You can send a link to one.
Pretty far along, then!
Yup!
I'm confused about the last page tbh
The spellcasting modifiers and the likes
Blood Hunters don't generally cast spells.
Except for... one of them. I forget which.
They have blood curses
Order of the Profane Soul
And that
But even they don't get spells til level 3.
But when I did a character with my previous dm it's filled in
That's why I'm confused
Was it from the race?
Blood curses aren't spells, though, so you won't have a spellcasting modifier.
Some races do provide spells, yes.
Changelings do not.
Most tieflings have spells, yeah.
Just leave that whole page blank, yeah.
It’s your classes hit dice + con modifier
Why do people hate on homebrew is it bad?
There's lots of really unbalanced homebrew, so some DMs don't allow it because it's work to review it.
But homebrew isn't inherently bad.
As DM I homebrew but I don't let my players homebrew for reasons ianrazorwing mentioned above.
It’s like a mod for a video game. It’s fan made content. Whether or not it’s good or bad is entirely dependent on how good of a game designer that fan who made it is, and there is no process for vetting or filtering the high quality stuff from the low quality stuff. The DM has to manually review any and all homebrew their players use, to determine if it’s acceptable
hi im very stupid can someone please explain how dnd works?
That's a big question. We can point you in the direction of the basic rules and some explainer Youtube videos and such. After you've given the rules at least a quick glance, then we can answer any specific questions you might have. Its a lot easier for us to answer specific questions like "How does an attack roll work?" or "What is Wisdom used for?" than the big general ones like "how does D&D work?"

oh ok ty
how does ability scores work?
Are you asking what each of your ability scores does? Or are you asking how to assign ability scores on your character sheet?
mostly how to assign on my character sheet
i just joined the dc server hoping to learn DnD lol
Well, to start off you've got your:
- Strength (how strong you are)
- Dexterity (how nimble you are)
- Constitution (how tough you are)
- Intelligence (how smart you are)
- Wisdom (how perceptive you are)
- Charisma (how cool you are)
Different characters benefit from each of these abilities in different ways. What kind of character were you hoping to make?
Sure! Classic Archer class options are Fighter, Rogue, and Ranger
You can look into more character building options in the links above
it says ranger weilds two daggers correct or something like that?
Any character can wield two daggers if they want. Some classes do it better than others, though!
thank you so much for this information and i will try my best to be slightly ok at this!

Take another look through the Basic Rules linked above. It's a step by step guide to character creation
is it a stupid question to ask for someone to teach someone from my group how to be a dm or just teach us the basics?
some of us already have our character sheets and we had a dm but they left and now we don't know what to do
i also understand some of the basics but im not fit to be a dm, im lost lmao
First read the free Basic Rules and/or watch Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
After you read the rules and/or watch the tutorial videos, feel free to ask questions here.
All experienced DMs were inexerienced at one point. You shouldn't let that stop you from trying to dM.
The only way you get become an experienced (and hopefully good) DM is to become a DM and gain experience (much like PCs gain experience!)
That said, head on over to #dm-discussion to ask for advice on DMing.
Yeah, DMing isn't something one is "taught" like learning to drive. It's more something where the resources will get yout part of the way there, and then you need to learn by doing...and that's like learning to ride a bike. Nobody can do the pedalling for you, or make it easier to balance!
The best way to practice is by playing one of the intro adventures that provide a lot of support to DMs: Dragon of Stormwreck Isle or Lost Mine of Phandelver (now the first few chapters of Phandelver & Below).
I also find that listening/watching other campaigns helps, if you can’t play then on your own. You can pick up on a lot, like the flow of the game and combat from watching things like critical role, or D20, or anything else, as over the top and as perfect as they try to be
thanks so much for the advice!! :D
also i don't know if i wanna be a dm cause i already have a character and i think i would wanna play as a character more than a dm
but i'll definitely bring those resources to my group to help all of us out
That's also fair. You can head to one of our search channels below and see if any DMs might be interested in joining, too!

oh you're right, i didn't see the channel for dms asking for players
Does anyone know what the best/easiest class to play is for beginners?
Are you learning on your own, or do you have someone to help you?
I’m in a club but we only meet once a week and I’m trying to create a character now…
If you’re not good about reading through rules, then a martial class (rogue, fighter, barbarian) would be easiest as they have the fewest mechanics to deal with.
But any class is doable with patience and, for lack of a better word, work.
Thank you!
Spellcasting definitely adds a lot of complexity. The rules devote a whole chapter to just that, and then there's all the spells on top of it.
Hi maybe not the right channel; I am trying to understand crit. So when you roll a 20 (with the d20, so without modifiers) you get critical succes. In combat that means a crit right? Crit is 2x damage right?
And how does resistence/weakness work?
If a mob is resistent to pierce. How much less will it do? And weakness?
If I do a sneak attack psionic dagger for 1d6 + 3 (dex modifier dagger) + 2d6 (sneak) attack. And the targer is weak to psychic damage how much will it do, or is this DM discretion? What if I had combined damage types (fire + psychic) will that modifier only apply to the super effective one? Thanks
To answer your first question, yes! A 20 on the die when making an attack roll is a critical hit. It automatically succeeds, and doubles all the damage dice. Which means, if your attack was going to deal 3d6+3 damage, it instead deals 6d6+3 damage! Very nice! Crits also matter when making Death Saving Throws, as they automatically stabilize you and heal you 1 HP. Getting a 20 anywhere else is usually pretty nice... but isn't considered an automatic success.
If a creature is resistant to a damage type like fire, it'll take half damage! If it's vulnerable to fire, it'll take double!
Ahh so a crit is just rolling MORE dice? So technically it can vary from slightly more damage to a lot more. I like that element a lot
In your example, if you roll 3d6+3 psychic damage and hit something weak to psychic, you'll still roll the same dice, but just double the total afterwards. Let's say your dice ended up being a nice, average 11+3 psychic. It'll deal a total of 28!
If you also rolled an extra 1d4 fire damage for whatever reason, you'd roll that on the side and add it without doubling it.
Ah thanks. And if I attack on rogue and I get advantage I can add my sneak attack die. I dont need to roll a d20 again to see if my sneak attack hits if my normal attack d20 already hit?
I know these are basic rules but the wording is confusing to me
Sneak attack damage is part of the underlying attack. It is not a separate attack for which a new “to hit” roll is needed
sneak attack is a feature that adds extra damage to an attack that qualifies;
to qualify, it has to 1: Hit, 2: Be with a Ranged or Finesse weapon, and 3: You either have Advantage, or, there's an enemy of your target within 5 feet of the target (and that enemy of the target isn't currently incapacitated).
And 4: You definitely didn't roll with disadvantage, actually rolling 2d20 and taking the lower one, since that means you don't get to sneak attack regardless and overwritingly so.
Right, since adv + disadv = nothing ergo no sneak
A 20 on the d20 only does something explicitly extra when it is with an Attack roll, or a Death Saving Throw (not a regular saving throw like against spells and dragon breath-weapons)
On an attack, it's as described, automatically hits regardless of modifiers or AC, and you roll the damage dice twice and add them together, then add modifiers.
On a death saving throw you regain 1 hit point, and since it's the start of your turn, you wake up and can stand up and do stuff - keeping in mind even a crab could pinch you back to passing out.
if you have ADV+DISADV they cancel out and play like you had neither
so if you have disadv, but then adv for some other reason, and hit someone who is in 5ft of an enemy of theirs, you can sneak attack since
"If circumstances cause a roll to have both Advantage and Disadvantage, you are considered to have neither of them, and you roll one d20. This is true even if multiple circumstances impose disadvantage and only one grants advantage or vice versa. In such a situation, you have neither advantage nor disadvantage."
So if you're considered to have neither:
You don't automatically qualify for having advantage (which you aren't considered to have)
You don't automatically disqualify for having disadvantage (which you aren't considered to have)
So if I get a crit 3d6 +3 (all have the +3 dex bonus) I roll additional 3d6 (but they get no +3?)
if there's an attack that does 3d6 + 3 damage, and it critically hits, it does 6d6 + 3 damage. Yep
The +3 is dex modifier. That wont double right?

Do I have to?
it's extremely recommended
But do I have to?
D&D is a game of rules.
it's kinda necessary to know the rules of the game to play the game
Okay I'll read it
Hi im new
Yup thankss
I only know the very basic so far and never experienced playing it
Well atleast not with people
Okay - so are you looking for a group to join? You can read #find-a-game to learn more about how to find a group to play with (and how to use our LFG channels).
I was about to ask the same lol
So thx I think
You're welcome!
And if you have any specific questions, feel free to ask here or in an appropriate channel . See id:browse to see all the many channels we have for various D&D topics.
Are we allowed to join any or we have to wait our turn to be tagged ?
Hi guys 🙂 Im new to d&d and looking forward to my first game.
You can express interest in any threads in #looking-for-players and/or #looking-for-community, or you can wait to be contacted if you've posted in #750812887697588356. I suspect if you'll have more luck if you're proactive in contacting others.

Does anyone have any tips on how to start a campaign? This is my groups first time playing and my first time as DM.
Are you set on running your own rather than using a pre-written one?
Yep!
I'd recommend looking at some published adventures (official would be best) to see how they're put together. There are tons of good videos on YouTube; I'd start with Matt Colville's "Running the Game" series, but you can find others for campaign planning more specifically. Kobold Press's Guide to Plots and Campaigns book may be useful.
Post your question in #dm-discussion as well. Lots of folks there will provide insights.
Sweet! Thanks!
Good luck! I think writing a campaign for your first time is a mighty big swing, but I hope it goes well.

So I'm looking for a game so I went to look for a DM. But they all use roll20 and stuff like that. Would I need all that too in order to participate?
Probably
Roll20 is an online Virtual Tabletop - you only need a browser and a Roll20 account to be able to use it.
Does that stuff cost money?
Nope. Roll20 offers a free account version. ✌️
The paid account version is really more for running games. It gives you more storage space for images, etc.
I recently watched the Jaiden Animations D&D video and Slimecicle’s reaction vod. At the end of the vod, Slimecicle pulls up a plan of the adventure on what looks like a website. Does anybody know what website this is? I just think it looks cool.
can you link the video here?
I am new to d&d
it looks like maybe gmbinder?
I don’t know. Better question, which would you suggest?
Suggest for what specifically?
I am looking for a party
Head to #find-a-game to start your search.
No one is there
Read the directions.
Ok
Sorry, I was asking what website they would suggest I use to plan out a custom adventure.
You can use something basic like Google Docs or Word. Some popular tools include Kanka.io, ObsidianMD, World Anvil, Notion, and One Note, but these may be more complex than you need.
Makes sense. Thanks.
Can someone help explain how custom lineage works regarding your base race in character creation? x.x
.5-+
sorry dog
Custom lineage is just the game's way of giving you an option if a particular race doesn't exist among the official races. You wanna play a giraffe person (or whatever)? Custom lineage. It might not have the right mechanical abilities to fit your mental image, but you can usually describe it however you want, provided your DM allows the use of the race in the first place.
are DMs usually open to that kinda thing?
It varies too widely to say with any certainty.
howdy all! super noob to d&d here. played dragonlance computer game back in day but never played with multiple people before
Welcome
Hi
If you're new to D&D (or at least new to this edition), check out the pinned message for useful reosurces to help get you started.
How does animate dead work? If I cast it on a dead enemy, does it reanimate the dead enemy and I use their stat block or does it reanimate it as a regular zombie and use the zombie stat block
Oh right. What does SAD mean?><
Single Ability Dependent. It refers to any class or subclass that only uses 1 ability score
oh gotcha.
As the spell states in its description, it creates a Zombie or a Skeleton, which uses the normal Zombie/Skeleton stat block
Okay, thanks
Would its form be retained or would it just look humanoid
like if I cast animate dead on a pile of wolf bones, would it animate as a humanoid skeleton or a wolf skeleton
That’s up to you and the DM. So long as you use the normal skeleton stat block (including it’s size category) than you can flavor it however you want
Okay, thank you
Can some one please teach me how to play dungeons and dragons
where do i send a digi copy of my character sheet????
#character-discussion would be a good place if you're looking for feedback
thank you
Hey I'm new and making a high elf character, it says I can choose a spell to start off with but i don't know which one would be the most useful.
Which class?
Sorcerer
Just choose what sounds fun for you. Just don't choose the true strike spell. That's the only spell in DnD that is unfun.
Ok thanks
All high elves get a bonus spell from the wizard class. So even though you are not a wizard you can choose a wizard spell.
and im making a half elf monk....
Interesting pfp.
As a Sorcerer, you'll want to pick your High Elf cantrip as some non-statistical one, as it's not going to correspond to your good spellcasting ability. Something like Prestidigitation or Message.
I see
Unless you have a decent Intelligence score. Or plan on investing in Intelligence.
Do I choose a first level spell now?
What do you mean?
might be a bit of a dumb question but what would be a good first dnd build? should i go for something silly and dumb or something actually good
No, but personally I recommend joining a game before working on a character sheet.
Some tables prefer silliness over something serious while others prefer something balanced. Speak to your DM about this.
Do you know any beginner campaigns that are open
I've never played fighter before but I've heard that is a great class for beginners.
hi i'm new and i'm trying to make a sheet for my necromancer priest character
i've read the basic rules and handbooker helper
Did you find a DM yet? I recommend finding a game to play in before jumping into character creation.
It is recommended for beginners because it is straightforward to learn. You have a weapon at hit people. As you level up you get better at it, and certain subclasses expand your options
This should allow you to focus on learning how the game works generally
Other options are Rogue or Barbarian
Have you decided what class you’ll use to represent a necromancer priest? I would recommend death cleric.
You could also do grave cleric
I figured that was the case. A simple class is always better for newbies.
Grave cleric is more for an anti-necromancer.
Fair
But yeah, I'd pick a deity that has the Death Domain and work from there. Alternatively you could always make a necromancy wizard. For a more academically smart priest.
Or an undead warlock if your priest has made a magical pact with powerful creature such as a lich or a vampire. That actually sounds quite interesting.
I kinda like the idea of a deceitful priest who claims to serve a good deity.
My greetings.
This site is for new players, if i understand correctly. I hope that i can ask questions here.
Question: is cleric is good start for first dnd play? Does anyone here have advice for playing cleric?
This class is very interesting to me but i also interested in knowing which classes also could be good for start.
Cleric is pretty complicated for a newcomer
Any spellcaster is going to be a lot more complicated
So for the first play i should choose someone who aren't Spellcaster. Alright.
Do you have any advise? Maybe fighter is good enough?
Fighter is the simplest class for a new player
If you want divine, cleric-like flavour, you could consider Paladin
It’s not quite as simple as fighter though
Thanks for your advises. Can you tell me more about paladin class in that case? I read about them but i didn't understand enough. I thought this class in the same level as fighter.
In difficulty, i mean.
It gets spells at 2nd level, and has a few more active features like divine smite, making them more complicated to play than fighter
They don’t have as many spells as cleric tho
Paladins need to follow an oath and have a more limited selection of spells. Paladins and clerics can both be useful in melee however clerics have long ranged spells which is something paladins don't really have.
I'm grateful for explanation from both of you. I guess that I'll try to make a paladin then. It sounds interesting to play.
I'm really happy that this place exist. It really helpful.
I had a question on some advice for wizards being good for a first character? or some general advice when it comes to wizards
Wizards are the opposite of good for a first character
Wizards are the most spaghetti-code spellcaster for new players IMO.
They’re the second hardest class for a new player imo, only just behind Druids
They have the most complex and spaghetti explanation Spellcasting trait of them all
Cleric: Each long rest you pick an amount of spells from the Cleric list, those are your spells for that day.
Sorcerer: You know your spell list, never changing it by the day, only slightly editing it by one spell each level-up.
Wizard: You have a book, and some spells in that book, and prepare an amount of spells picked from that book, and you get some free spells put into the book per level but can also pay to add a spell you found into the book.
My first character was a wizard. But I had an idea and I really wanted to go with it. I confess that I had a bit of a hard time understanding how the class worked but I don't regret it. Having a good teacher is always helpful for a new player.
yeah my friend who has been playing dnd for a while has been teaching me about the class pretty well
I somewhat understand it but I just wanted a 2nd opinion if it was a good class choice for my first character
It's not the best class for beginners however if you really want to try this class first go for it. I've had people try to sway me from not playing a certain class and it's never fun.
yeah I love the concept of wizards of any game that has them or magic spells so I wanted to try it for dnd even if it's not beginner friendly learning it sounds fun
thanks for the advice 👍🏼
Love me a smart magic person who can annihilate everything.
Where can I see list of weapons with their dice and ability for Example Light crossbow 1d8 and dex
you can find the list here in the basic rules
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/equipment#Weapons
It’s in the basic rules?
When I’m in dnd beyond I can’t find a page called basic rules
I posted a link to it just above
Yes but when I dm I want to find it myself not go to discord and try to find the link😭
You could bookmark it
It's the fourth option in the Sources menu
There is
They use Str by default for melee weapons, and Dex for ranged
If they have the finesse property you can choose Str or Dex
This is covered in the Making an attack section
Ability Modifier. The ability modifier used for a melee weapon attack is Strength, and the ability modifier used for a ranged weapon attack is Dexterity. Weapons that have the finesse or thrown property break this rule.
So it’s always dex or strength
By default. Some class features and spells let you use other stats
Like cursed weapons
No, not like cursed weapons
Off the top of my head, shillelagh lets you use Wis, and hexblade lets you use Cha
Like spell and class features that let you use Wisdome or Charisma instead
Battlesmith let’s you use int
But if you're still getting to grips with how the game works, don't worry about that
Dhampir lets you make unarmed strikes with con
I think understanding how the game works is equally important
No point having a character sheet if you don't know how to use it
It’s not a flat d20 roll
This may help your players
But yeah that’s the basics
With modifier
And proficiency bonus
Reactions are a type of action you take in response to someone else doing something
You don’t have to take a reaction on your turn, you can take it whenever the trigger happens
But how many times can you use it?
That's covered in Chapter 9 linked above
Once between each of your turns
You have 1 reaction, once you've used it, you get it back at the start of your turn
You can only use a reaction when a game ability says
could i request aid in building a character if anyones interested?
that'd be a request for #character-discussion
thanks!
i was thinking a necromancy wizard, i wanted to multiclass because it fits my character
maybe some levels in cleric or paladin...?
That'd be a #character-discussion topic, especially if you're multiclassing
It's generally inadvisable to multiclass for your first character, as it introduces a huge amount of complexity to the rules. Try looking for a class or subclass that covers everything with your character. You want to do necromancy while also being religious and bashing skulls? Death Domain Cleric or Oathbreaker Paladin already accomplish that. As Davyd says, for further discussion #character-discussion is the place to go, but I think it's always good to point out the problems of multiclassing when its mentioned in the newcomers channel, lest someone else read it and get ideas that will lead them to an unfun first experience.
I have a question what if in a combat 2 players have a plan together but because of turns they can’t do it together what can they do then?
Well, because any combat will involve the initiative order which is rolled at the start, it's best to plan around what its going to permit, rather than plan before its rolled.
Players can use Ready Actions to defer their action until an event triggers it. This can allow for better coordination. Also the Help Action confers advantage to a player, as long as they use it before the next turn.
True, Ready action would be perfect
The could try setting things up with the ready -action, depending on what the wish to do
Oh ok I’ll try to remember it
Get a cheat sheet of the available actions. It's easy to forget some of the more niche ones, but they can be very useful sometimes! https://crobi.github.io/dnd5e-quickref/preview/quickref.html
Oh that’s a nice colourful cheat sheet
thank you so much
Do you need to pay for stuff to play the game?
The DnD Beyond website has the basics for the game
No, you can play the game for free using the Basic Rules
Okay!
Hello, I'm new with DND but this seems to be a fun place
Welcome!
Ahoy! I'm new here as well. I can't wait to share my ideas and art with the community!
I literally entered here because of Jaiden animations experience in DND and I think it's fun
That video was amazing
How can i send images? Im unable to on any channel and i need to show my ability scores :(
You don't need to to show your ability scores, you can just post them as text
Im on my phone tho
Oh you mean tjat
regarding the pact of the blade, does it only include swords or do bows count too? i think i saw somewhere taking about an invocation about it but im not sure
Yeah, you need the Improved Pact Weapon invocation to use bows.
You can choose the form that this melee weapon takes each time you create it
Emphasis on "melee".
Whereas Improved Pact Weapon adds this:
Finally, the weapon you conjure can be a shortbow, longbow, light crossbow, or heavy crossbow.
Still no dart 😔
Hi, I'm a huge fan of dnd and have always been fascinated by the concept and recently decided to prep my first ever campaing for my friends but i have some trouble with this phase. If any of u seasoned dm would like to give me a few tips on note taking, how much prep is actually needed and this kind of fundamental stuff i would really appreciate it!
I'd recommend asking in #dm-discussion!
ok i'll do that thank u !
I remember when I was dming a one shot once one of the players rerolled the dice once in a combat because she got a low number and I didn't let her so I'm thinking if they do it again I'll skip their turn entirely because it's very annoying when they do that
What?
She got a low number and just rolled the dice again thinking I wouldnt notice
As in they just decided "I'm going to re-roll this dice because I don't like the result"?
Yeahhh
Okay, well that's cheating and not something you fix in game by punishing a player with a skipped turn
Yeah that's what I was thinking of doing
You instead should talk to them and explain that goes against the spirit of the game and devalaues everyones time
I'd start by having a discussion with the table about how failure shapes the story as much as success. It's all part of the same game.
You're right but also
she Was new to dnd and thought it was fun like very new newer than me
All the more reason to start with the carrot instead of the stick.
What’s the best way to learn what kind of character I want to create? Any good videos that explain my options and what all the different traits and abilities available to each class/subclass in a video anyone can recommend. D&D beyond is good, just looking for more detailed explanation.
I really want to jump into a campaign and learn, just wish I had someone to help and explain instead of reading a ton of shit without being able to ask questions lol. Wish I had some people to play with in person to help out.
XP to Level 3 is generally pretty memey, but this video might be helpful: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PoyVuHRB3Ik
Thank you I’ll check it out. To preface I feel like I understand the rules and roles well enough, just creating a character seems daunting as I don’t know what I should (what I want) to make. I’ve been watching a podcast that is 3 hours long each episode so I’ve seen how the game is played and understand how it’s played between player and dm. And I played probably 10 years ago but only a couple times.
The main thing that was confusing to me is picking what items are on your character. Like should I look at looking for players to see what I’m aloud to take? And what custom items I can take that aren’t in D&D beyond?
You can head to #character-discussion and engage in a conversation there. Folks will probably ask good clarifying questions about ideas you might have, or a fantasy you might want to fulfill.
Lots of DMs will probably obey the standard equipment rules, but it can vary, so it's really difficult to generalize.
Where can I find standard equip rules?
There's a whole chapter on it, but here's the character-creation portion: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#5ChooseEquipment
Not a video, but this might help.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1047-d-d-101-a-quick-breakdown-of-classes-in-dungeons
its from phb?
Looks like that was added in Xanathar's Guide to Everything.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/xgte/subclasses#ImprovedPactWeapon
ty
Ok I understand most rules I’ll learn better if I play
How hard it it to find a game
It can vary. It all depends on what you’re looking for and what’s available.
The more specific your needs, the longer it might take.
Hello can anyone give me like some tips for being a dm?
this is what a really experienced dm friend told me ''Most important thing is that everyone has fun, as a gm u are the one ruling how stuff happens, so u can fumble npc attacks and allow something players want''
?dmtips
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
Since my character is a rogue barbarian multiclass, do I take both a rogue subclass and a barbarian subclass when I get each of them to level 3
Yep!
Okay
I'm going Scout Rogue and Elk Totem Barbarian because this campaign isn't too serious and I'm already kinda strong and don't wanna power game the stuff the DM has planned
This is one of the best guides I've found for being a DM: https://howtogm.guide/
There's also plenty of advice on this server if you just search dm tips.
Thanks
Hey ! I'm pretty new at dnd, and am confused by how spells work for multiclasses
I was originally an artificer, when for the plot, i was given warlock
you track the artificer spells and warlock spells seperately, using the class's usual spellcasting ability (INT for Arti, CHA for warlock
so i need to have two different spell lists?
yes
do each of them have different spell slots or do they share them?
and since its warlock, yo just get the warlock spell slots and the arti spellslots seperately
ah k
you can cast a spell with either slot, no matter what class its from
so the spell slots are combined?
(This is why paladins usual multiclass into hexblade)
If it was any class other than warlock, the spell slots would combine
damn so that just makes my life difficult then huh
yeah. you get your normal spell slots for artificer, and tag the warlock spell slots on
Might honestly be worth moving this discussion to #dnd-rules , as multiclassing isn't exactly newcomer friendly
i blame my dm for that lmao
Yeah the only thing worth saying about multiclassing in #dnd-newcomers is...don't try it as a newcomer! There's a lot of subclasses that bring in features from different classes, and there's probably one that will fit your character concept without needing to subject yourself to the pain and risks of multiclassing.
I DIDNT CHOOSE TO AAAAAA
Haha yeah I feel your pain.
DM shouldn’t force a multiclass on you, I’d have a talk with them
I'd honestly have a conversation with your DM about that, because forcing a level of multiclass on you without your consent is not really recommended.
It might be worth bringing it up with your DM. Taking a multiclass level isn't something to force upon a player lightly, especially a newer one
Lol

Hello, I'm new to dnd, how to play?
Unless you're having fun with multiclassing. I was told not to play as a wizard when I first started but I still went for it 'cause it's what I wanted.
they were made a artificer and warlock combo thou

Okay So I have been playing D&D for years but only in person. I have never tried it with an online community any suggestions
What sort of suggestions are you looking for?
Are you asking as a player or as a DM?

Hi guys, sorry for bothering you but i need your help
I've recently become interested in dnd and started doing some research to understand the "game mode"
I can't quite understand the dice system and how we choose the numbers in the numbers for the character powers.. (I don't know if i'm clear..)
Do you have any good ytb channel's suggestions that can explain it?
(Btw i got a a stupid question does txt party's exist? Like writing not talking ^^)
Sorry for bothering you 🙏🏻

Text-based play (also called play-by-post) is definitely a thing. There are multiple sites and servers that accommodate that style of play.
Oh really! Do you have servers, sites suggestions ?
You can use the Explore Discoverable Servers to find them. As for sites, places that specialize in PBP that I'm aware of are Role Gate, Gamers Plane, RPG Crossing, Reddit's r/PBP, and D&D Beyond's forums.
?tag new abilities
Abilities
Six abilities provide a quick description of every creature's physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
For each ability, your character has an ability score, a number from 1 to 20. There are three ways to determine ability scores, and your DM will let you know which to use. (If you don’t have a DM yet, choose Standard Array or Point Buy.)
- Roll the Dice. Roll 4d6 and record the total of the highest three. Do this six times, and then assign each total to a different ability.
- Standard Array. Assign each of the following numbers to a different ability: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Point Buy. Choose your own ability scores by spending points.
After assigning your ability scores, determine your ability modifiers, a number from -5 to +5, using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table.
☝️ Is this what you’re looking for?
Yees that's it thank you 💖💖
Thanks you ✨💖
I have a final question, do we need to be spontaneous or do we have a little time before answering? ^^
That depends on how it's run. Some are asyncrhonous and you post whenever you can. For others everyone gets together at a set time, but you probably have some thinking time.
Even when it's a no text based dnd ? Like a normal session?
If you are in a dungeon, or out in the wilderness, or whatever, and you come to an obstacle, and the DM asks you what you want to do, then you probably have some time to think of a solution. But if you are just talking to an NPC, then you should think of it like a normal conversation, and treat the pauses and thinking time like you would if you were talking to a real person
Sometimes. It really varies.
In combat, you have a lot more time to think, in between turns and such
Hello ^^
Oh okay thanks you for your help guys
I'm not good with English that's why, when it's in text i have a little time to think for the suitable words but in normal session it would be more difficult x)
Hii
Perhaps you could find people to play with that speak your native language. D&D is for everyone, after all
I'm just curious, is there a specific channel with help in making my own D&D game? Would that be the D&D bot help stuff?
I'm working on a simple version of like a D&D styled game and I'm tryna look for some assistance I guess with like ideas on how to do some things
You'll probably want to find a more general game/TTRPG design Discord.
i asked in Reddit and fb but i didn't find one
I’d you are trying to make a completely new TTRPG, that would be #non-dnd-topics at best, but yeah this server probably isn’t the best place to find help for that
You can try asking here. In #find-a-game you can find instructions for how to make posts in our “looking for games” channels
Thnks youu 💖💐 Hoping to find one ^^
oohhh ok
do you know any in particular by chance?
Look for the tavern
MCDM also has a game design channel.
The Discord of Many Things could be a good place to try as well? That's also a D&D 5e server, but its specifically focused on homebrew and content creation
Nice
ahh ok
thank you all for the help lol Idrk what I'm doing when it comes to D&D type games but I'll keep looking for stuff
Btw, to help you on your journey, you should use the term “TTRPG” instead of “D&D Game.” D&D is a specific brand. A specific type of TTRPG. Its like saying “Toyota” when you mean “car”
Tabletop, tabletop game, tabletop role-playing game, and TTRPG should net you some results.

I haven't had a chance to tackle those tag requests yet. 😅
So you are planning to follow those suggestions? Delightful!
Hello! I always wanted to play dnd but I never found a group that would play. I'm brand new to this even tho I created a lot of dnd characters for fun. How can I join a campaign? Homebrew. Like completely Homebrew
Ok, the link above should help
I personally think that for a new DM, the best introduction is to work the Dragon of Stormwreck Isle adventure into your world. It's basically just a little bottle-adventure and the island can fit into any fantasy world. Just scribble out any geographical identifiers and replace them with your own. This will give you a bit of momentum before you have to take the reins fully, and get your players up to level 3 and a good understanding of fundamentals.
Does « common language » count as a language if I’m a Dwarven Warrior Guild Artisan ?
And do I need to choose another language on top of Common and Dwarf ?
Almost every PC race starts with Common (I think the only exception to this is the Grung).
+1 language from your race and +1 from your background
That means common + 2 others languages ?
You get your Native tongue plus 2 others. Yes.
If you mean hadozee, it’s a paid race, so you’ll need to buy it
If you want to use dnd beyond to make your character you need to buy the contents related to it. I spent 2 dollars to be a minotaur
Go here and scroll down to the purchase individual races section
https://www.dndbeyond.com/marketplace/sourcebooks/spelljammer-adventures-in-space
Any individual purchases will be removed from the total required to buy the book later, down to $2 which is the minimum transaction value
your DM if they have D&D beyond can share something with you and it'll give you all the books. I really dont suggest buying anything from D&D beyond especially because of the controversy they were a part of.
That's presuming the dm has access to that monkey player type
hello hello
Hi
Hi
Hi guys it's me again 😅 i wanted to make my caractère sheet but didn't find a writing version, they all in pdf
You can print out the pdfs
I'm having trouble choosing a background for an aberrant mind plasmoid. Any suggestions?
It's more to send it later (more suitable for online sessions)
But if I don't find will do it thanks ^^
Hi guys
hey
Im not a D&D newcomer but I am however new to dnd on platforms like these and others
But hello
Your character's background is as important as your class and race. Any background will do, but you will need to be the one to choose it since it defines so much about the character. I feel suggesting one at random to you will only retract from your enjoyment of creating and playing a unique character...
I never played d&d and have nothing for the game or know anything except it is fun. anything I should know abt?
If you have an imagination and can see in your own way whts being described to you and can improv onna whim your golden ponyboy

I kinda wanna make a character that dreams of having magic
making your way through those links ^ is a great way to start
But he serves a powerful being and gains Magic powers
Probably something akin to a fairy
Warlocks get their magic from a powerful extraplanar entity
Warlock, The Archfey
I forgot how many rules there was
Glamour Bard
Archfey Warlock
Fey Wanderer Ranger.
Maybe my character starts human, but befriends an entity that give him powers
In wich u can also describe them as you want
Just to clarify a level 5 barb let’s say has like plus 4 strength and two attack actions I roll my great sword let’s say like d10 so I roll that twice and then add my plus 4?
Isn’t that just a warlock?
That could work alright with the Fey Wanderer Ranger. Start off as relatively normal, learn magic at level 2 and then get fey powers at level 3 when you choose the subclass
Thts prolly a decision for a dm to make unless u havva class that involves such 😉
Hi ! I'm new here
I've never played DnD but I'm realy interested and hoping to get some help and find a group that would take a newbie like me in maybe

When you start looking around, dont be disuaded just because a group posting doesnt explicitly mention it is newbie friendly, most tables in my experience are very open to teaching the game
Just be upfront about it, and people will be happy to help
same!
I'd need to find a group that plays online. Couldn't find any groups to join in in my hometown
That's close to the Fey Wanderer thematic.
Is that good?
Im game
Brief Description:
A fey mystique surrounds you, thanks to an auspicious event. You are a Fey Wanderer, a ranger who represents both the mortal and the fey realms.
Nice imma tiefling
Nice!
I have kind of a concept on how DnD works....
and I DID play pen and paper online for like.... close to twenty years now - but until now only with two people and not dice or something so similar but also completly different
so I have a few blank spots still - and am a little confused with these character sheets...
Where are you stuck?
well.... Kinda for a few classes I'm not entirely sure what their supposed purpose is....
Ranger is like physical attacks with bows from distance and daggers close up and more like medium armor? do they have any spells at all or are they 'normal' aside from the fact that they can talk to animals?
and what stats are important for which player?
I mean I get that strengh is important for direct attacks and deception when you wanna fool people
I know next to nothing on DND
Rangers do have a few nature-themed spells, but not to the extent a druid does.
They often patrol the edges of civilization to keep it safe.
rangers are still solid spellcasters in their own right but its mostly supplemerntary instead of the main focus like a druid
Sheets gave me a problem early on its really just reading and piecing it all together I still get lost on it trial and error ig 😂
Yea rangers can sub with beasmasters
Could someone Educate me
Which stats you want to prioritize generally depends on your class.
Each class has a Quick Start guide that gives suggestions for your top picks.
Yea just join in the convo

yeah.... I wanna make this character thats super friendly and helpful but a little naive maybe and has a wonderful family so shes kinda under the wing of the others in the group but at the same time the one who feeds everyone. so I need someone that can identify plants that can be eaten and can hunt
I want to make a character that gains power when a being gives him power and trains him to become stronger
Personality is played by you and your chr bio and lore is also devd by u
Hes either a complete sweetie or absolutely insane and power crazy
Chaotic neutral
He’s probably a mythos buff so he seeks out those mythical creatures with magical powers in hopes to gain power
Anything with Survival and Nature, and as you can get proficiency choices from your background, that leaves the field open.
What are classes?
Kinda like jobs. What your area of expertise is. Wizards do magic. Bards entertain and inspire. Fighters...fight.
What could my character be judging by his motivation
I’m thinking of changing his character to one that doesn’t actively seek power, maybe on a mission they get a magical object and he receives it as a token of how good he did
That's all based off of the DMs storyline and your participation as well as the type of rolls if any for loot and such
I do want his appearance to alter once he gets this power
Best to think about the start of your character's journey. Assume you're starting out, at level 1.
No. You just make two seperate normal attacks
Psychic type builds can alter shapes casting illusion magics against an enemy making them see what you want them too
There’s no such thing as a “psychic type build”
there's always the option of having some deity as a love and they give you your magical powers and alter you through that
I don’t see him as a lover boy honestly…
You can just flavour it as him changing in appearance
For class, archfey warlock fits best
Which is all good to think about- but entirely dependent on the DM you get and the game you actually get to play. Focus on the start, to start.
I WANT THAT
they are pretty similar in appearance to the argonians in the elder scrolls series - if that helps
no wings
but scales and a tail and such
Actually by default they don’t have a tail
A lot of people flavour them as having tails tho
oh, sorry, my bad!
Most I know about DnD I learned from You Tube!
As far as how psionic powers/characters are represented in 5E, there are 3 Subclasses in Tasha's Cauldron Of Everything. The Psi Warrior Fighter and the Soul Knife Rogue work essentially the same way as Battle Master Fighters. They gain a Subclass-specific resource call Psionic Energy Dice.
They are subclasses with psychic powers, however they are not a “psychic type build”
There is
Also they don’t even have the illusion spells you were talking abt
The build is how the player does it you get what im tryna say lol
You create the image of an object, a creature, or some other visible phenomenon that is no larger than a 20-foot cube. The image appears at a spot that you can see within range and lasts for the duration. It seems completely real, including sounds, smells, and temperature appropriate to the thing depicted.
Psycic image aswell
I look everything up
Im not tryna argue w anyone. I wouldn't say it if I cant back it
There's nothing called "psychic image" in 5e
Are you looking at an unearthed arcana document?
there is no spell called psychic image
The psychic image can cast only psychic illusion spells on itself. The spells affect other targets normally, despite originating from the psychic image. Objects are affected by the psychic image as if they had succeeded at their Will saves.
thats not 5e
theres no such thing as will saves in 5e
please link where you are seeing this
Mam or sir as I said I look up everything
i am neither mam or sir
also you may be looking that up, but the place that you are finding it is not accurate
google is a search engine. what site are you seeing it on
I didnt mean t I clip that lol
please link the site you are seeing that information on
ah i think ive found it. thats from pf1e, a completely different system
I’ll probably need to think over what I want my character to be
I had an idea for a bastard prince
He’s the prince of a kingdom of butterflies
His mother was the princess who snuck off to see her monster boyfriend
And they had a child
Who the royal council denied him as an heir because he was not pure
What do you think so far
soe he's like half human half dragonborn or something?
not sure what you mean with 'monster boyfriend'
Phantasmal force im srry i believe it is
Like I said, very very rudimentary idea
the subclasses you listed dont get any spells, phantasmal force included
It HAS potential I'd say
lots of ways you can go fron there - he can be bitter about all that and be evil or still kinda good but like a rogue or something
or he trie getting power and is now a wizard or something
Or he is aboslutly pure in teh hart and can be a paladin because he wants to defend the kingdom or something...
I do want him to have some good in his heart
Make sure your DM is ok with you picking a homebrew race because a lot of DMs don't allow that. And make sure you think of a monster so that you know if you're half-manticore or something else.
And maybe doesn’t come to the realization that his right to the throne was stolen
And then snaps
Furthermore being a prince implies that you have a lot of power which might be problematic for certain DMs.
Yea its prolly games ive played w other dms cuz ive deff seen some things like that so led me to believe its possible and as for looking on dnd 5e forums and dnd lounge its all mainly personal player builds
i believe you were looking at another system or another edition of dnd
Idc for reddit Thts as accurate as an onion changing an iphone
If you're ever in doubt as to whether something is official content or not, you should look to official sources. You can find said official sources on DNDBeyond, for example.
Google, is unfortunately very inconsistent whether it pulls up an official source or some crazy homebrew, so you can't rely on it if you aren't intimately familiar with the game.
Could of been tht too I apologies
“Will save” is definitely not DnD 5e

Welcome!
i have never played DnD, i know very little but enough to become interested, i have a passion for writing stories and my coworker told me i need to get into this
how do you learn more about dnd,
how do i meet people to play dnd,
what can i expect?
lol i just scrolled up for two seconds and that answered two of my questions
Have a look at the basic rules linked in the pinned messages
Or yeah in that bot message above
I don't know what im expecting for chatgpt but im sure not this, literally create a whole battle without even me letting control my self as player
Well i did learn some things after all im new bie and don't really know much
Do be aware that AI content is against server rules, and this channel is for helping folks learn the basics of D&D.
Sorry, I don't know
Well that is kinda like a lesson tho atleast i became aware about the use of savingthrow was actually literally for saving one self
And wisdom can go against illusion
I don't even know that you can role dice for that
It depends on the spell being used; some specify that they can be seen through with a successful check save. And the DM can call for a roll for whatever.
Illusion spells usually involve Intelligence saving throws actually.
Appreciate the correction!
AI can be useful but it's flawed. I suggest opening the Player's Handbook instead.
But it does depend on the spell, i.e., Minor Illusion is an Investigation check.
I have a book but its confusing me more
It's a lot of information so that's fair.
once you have a DM theyll help you get through it, especially how it relates to their campaign
I’d recommend giving this a try:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/begin/en
Okayy thanks
It’s a little more “Choose Your Own Adventure”, but it’s specifically written to teach the basics of D&D.
This is cute.
Meowdy
How to post a "look for dm"? I haven't seen one that suits my time
you need to use the bot command as explained in #find-a-game
my first session (which actually was earlier today) was chaotic. I ended up late because I messed some time things up, but at least my introduction was nice... by crashing through a window on the second floor.
yup. I didn't know much context yet but it was fun
Waitwait what does expertise do?
Ive read it in dnd beyond and I didn’t understand it sounds too powerful
it is proficiency but doubled basically
Expertise let's you take a skill you are already proficient in and double your proficiency bonus in that skill
So if I have +3 dex and +2 proficiency that makes it 5 so now with expertise I’ll have +7??for stealth
yep
That’s very strong what
Howww
it is nice yes but i wouldnt call it too powerful or anything
You have a bonus of +7 to any ability check with stealth
but you are correct that expertise is far stronger than normal proficiency
And for example Acrobatics
Because you need to remember that D&D is a team game and just because you have +7 to stealth, that's not going to make your team mates any stealthier
Expertise in acrobatics isn't going to make your teammates anymore acrobatics
Also it’s not like the entire game is stealth checks
So not stealth but for example acrobatics is strong
No stronger than stealth
in a game with literal magic this is pretty tame really
Stealth is probably actually stronger and more useful
Take what Pixelated said and swap in acrobatics
Skills are situational, that's literally their definition
They're situational categories to help the DM decide if proficiency should be applied
Mmmm ok youre right
Then it’s not that strong
I forgot what other skills are there with dex
Do other classes other than rogues get this?
Rangers can get one expertise at level 1 with some optional rules.
Otherwise there are two Feats that can give expertise and some subclasses grant it as well (though the double proficiency bonus is not always called expertise every time)
That's because it's technically different
Expertise can only be applied to an existing proficiency
Double proficiency can only be applied to a skill you're not proficient in
Sleight of hand, acrobatics, and stealth are the dexterity skills
What about if I have expertise as in level 3 I think and I have like +8 on persuation
Persuation is important
Persuasion isn't mind control
No?
No, very much no
You use it to persuade people
Doesn’t mean they’ll necessarily agree
If someone would, in some capacity or circumstance, be willing to do something, it increases your chances of convincing them to do it
It won't make someone do something they'd never do
But if I dm and they roll a 20 on Persuation I still want to make them feel like they did something
Using the social interaction rules as an example, a friendly creature at most would "accept a significant risk or sacrifice to do as asked"
Can you persuade a king to just hand over their kingdom to you? No because it’s unreasonable, can you persuade a king that they need to aid you in your quest to find a magic McMuffin to save his kingdom? You can certainly try
Firstly, a 20 on ability checks doesn't mean anything beyond "You rolled the highest possible result"
If someone for all their life knew their name to be their name, you'd never be able to convince them...
Buuut, like if someone was experiencing some semblence of memory loss, or similar reason you can reason into persuading this person otherwise, maybe perhaps you'd be able to convince someone their name wasn't actually their name.
Secondly, sometimes it's not possible to succeed on something
they did do something. They persuaded the person they were trying to persuade
unless it's completely impossible
But if he just says no then it didn’t work
if you are a DM and call for a player to make an ability check, there has to be at least a failure and success - whatever that means.
A success might be... persuading the spymaster to only throw you in jail rather than send you to the mines. It's still bad, just that succeeding can make it not the worst thing possible.
Always highly hingent on the situation,
It's how those successes and failures play out that make the game fun
some things are always just immediate failures, no need to even try to roll, not every action calls for a roll; the DM will call for a roll when needed.
While a nat 20 should always be the best possible outcome, that outcome might be "the king doesn't take it as an insult, thinks it's a joke, and warms to you".
Similarly, a 20 doesn't just mean the king gives you the kingdom, or that a 1 instantly makes everyone in earshot want to kill you. It just means the best (or worst) outcome possible. Possible.
Ok I get it
Hello everyone
I am new to dnd and have only played ftd before
Where should I get started ? Or should I just join a game ?
Ftd as in "from the depths"?
Best place to get started is by reading the linked parts in the bot post I am about to trigger
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
No as in five torches deep
Hii im like completely new to D&D and know next to nothing lol
Unfortunately, one of the hardest parts of getting started in DND is finding a game. It's quite challenging, particularly if you are just looking for strangers online. The best way to start the journey is with a group of pre-existing likeminded friends.
Hello!
Ah well, you'll be off to a good start then
i dont really have any likeminded friends unfortunately lol
ive been watching a few D&D story time type of videos (ie reddit stories) and have started getting interested in actually playing
Yeah it's a lot of fun!
i really want to learn about the rules as well as trying to find a game of some type
Well, the bot post I put above has the basic rules, and ends with how to find a group via this server
It's just worth bearing in mind that finding the group is the hardest part. It's a little like dating.
D&D speed dating lol
I doubt the word "speed" applies 😄
dnd slow dating
D&D patient dating
That's a good way to get struck off the Doctor's Register.
Hey can someone help me in private messages to fill in my character sheet? Id apreciatw it
Where does a dnd party usually meet? like I mean in game
Like how do they meet each other
depends on the DM. some give a small backstory (usually a couple days/weeks) and start with the party together. some build the first session around the players meeting, and others just let it happenm as it happens
The group can meet in a tavern having all answered the same advertisment looking for adventurers
They could already know each other and the adventure begins with them as an established group
They could all be members of a ships crew, an adventuring guild, or a military unit and are put together by circumstance
It's whatever fits the campaign
I am going to dm a campaign first time even tho I'm new and I thought of them starting in like a place where they have to take a test to go on an adventure
Kind of like the HxH exam
idk how mine started bc i was late but i was introduced by crashing through a window, so if you get any late joiners that's an idea
the rule of cool always applies
I recommend taking a look at the pinned message here in the channel - it has a link to the free basic rules (all you need to start) and other useful resources to help out.
how new are you top rpgs in general
if you need help finding resources, shoot me a message. also can help you build a barbarian @surreal mirage if youd like
thanks
Hello evryone im Jaydan and im curious to this,i have seen someone else on youtube play d&d with some other people and it looked fun,my qeustion is what would you suggest to do first as a newcomer and can you play online without irl equipement?

can play online w/o real equipment, there are a bunch of resources, roll20 is a great one. pinned message has the basic rules, enough to build a character and follow along in any campaign mechanics wise
but do you need irl equipement? and if you do then can you say what?
The rules to refer to, dice (real or digital/online), character sheet (real or digital) and a way to communicate with everyone is pretty much all you need.
And the rules are more for reference.
Hey guys do y'all know a good youtube guide to DM-ing or a series that explains different parts of DM-ing?
not really, most websites/apps have dice rollers, and all the source books can be found if youre crafty/ on dndbeyond
Might get some good ideas from folks in #dm-discussion
so online they have the character sheets and the dices?
i'm 100% new to dnd. heard and read stuff about it online and decided i want to try to at least make a character sheet to start but i have no idea how to fill in some of the things there. could i maybe get a lil' bit of help...?
DnDBeyond is a digital toolset for helping folks play D&D and it has a digital charactersheet creator and dice roller (and you can buy the digital versions of the books or even individual parts of the books).
Where are you getting stuck?
Have you read the first chapter of the free basic rules?
It goes through character creation step by step.
i did. have it open right now on a tab as i'm staring at my character sheet, but i'm still a bit stuck on a few things. like the saving throws. how do i fill that part?
Saving throws are based on your core attributes. Then your character class specifies two saving throws that you are proficient in - which allows you to add your proficiency bonus to them.
So if your strength is 14, your strength saving throw would be +2 (strength modifier). Then if your class indicates you are proficient in strength saving throws, add your proficiency bonus to that.
That would be how you calculate saving throws.
I need to step away but feel free to post questions here and I'm sure folks will help answer them.
thank you very much for your help. i really really appreciate it!
do you need any help finding other resources @cyan karma ?
yes please! there are still a few things i have no idea how to fill in sorry
of course! what's troubling you?
uh how do i determine and/or fill the attack bonus for the weapons i have?
its kind of the same process as saving throws, if you're proficient in a weapon, you add proficiency bonus to the roll, and then the ability you use depends on the weapon. weapons that have the finesse property use dex, while most others use strength
How do you make a character sheet?
i'd suggest going to dnd beyond
yup, or finding the basic rules and folowing that.
hmm so example, rapier is one of the weapons my character is proficient with. so for attack bonuses, i'll add +2 from my proficiency bonus and +3 dexterity modifier, which makes it a +5 attack bonus?
yes
you also add dex mod to damage
uh "she", sorry!
sorry
it's cool lol
yup, of course! happy to help. if you have any more questions or need resources, just dm me
will do! thank you again!
out of curiosity, what are you building @cyan karma
like, what race/class my character is?
yup!
nothing too wild lol. i just went with a half-elf bard
hey, doesnt have to be wild to be fun! what colleges are you thinking about?
I'd recommend Eloquence because high rolls are great
oooh right colleges. i'll be honest, i'm so new to dnd i haven't even thought that far ahead yet lol
do you have the phb and such?
i unfortunately don't. it's hard finding dnd stuff here where i live. i don't even have anyone to talk to about dnd because no one from my hometown knows about it lol
In total:
Melee weapons use your Strength modifier to hit and damage.
Ranged weapons use your Dexterity modifier to hit and damage.
Exceptions exist: The Finesse property lets a weapon use either your Strength or Dexterity (for both to hit and damage) - your choice!
If you are proficient with the weapon, you add your proficiency bonus to the attack roll (but not the damage roll).
More exceptions exist - some subclasses allow a character to replace which ability they can use to attack with certain weapons, such as a Hexblade Warlock's Hex Warrior feature letting them use Charisma for one specific weapon, or Battle Smith Artificer using Intelligence when attacking with magic weapons.
:0 thank you for the explanation!
As always, the game is structured around assuming the general rules apply, unless you have something more specific that says you do something else, or can do something special.
will keep that in mind!
Got any more things needing clarification?
you mentioned adding proficiency bonus to attack rolls, but not damage rolls. how does that work? like uh, how do you calculate damage?
The weapon you're using details its damage die, and you add the modifier you also added to the attack roll.
For example, a 1st level character with a Strength of 16 and proficiency with Maces makes a melee weapon attack with a Mace.
They add their Strength modifier (a score of 16 is a modifier of +3) and their proficiency bonus (a 1st level character has a +2 proficiency bonus) to the attack roll (1d20 + 5 to hit - meet or beat the AC of the target, it hits)
On a hit, they deal damage. The Mace does 1d6 damage on a hit. Since we used Strength, it'd do 1d6 + 3 bludgeoning damage.
The link to Weapons and the link to Proficiency Bonus and the link to Attack Rolls
oooh :0 so attack rolls is to determine if you hit the enemy in the first place
thank you again for the explanation!
Hello
Yep. Sometimes, an attack roll can be made with something not dealing damage, such as the Giant Spider's Web attack that doesn't damage but instead restrains the target on a hit. There's also a particular use of the Plane Shift spell involving a melee spell attack, but there's no damage, it's to determine whether the spell can connect in that particular usage.
But 99.999999% of the time you're just rolling to hit and then rolling the damage of the hit, as a player
hiii
lol glad the complicated stuff is only 0.000001% of the time
rules are heirarchies - there's always a bigger fish, until you do get to the biggest fish
lol nice rule
i gotta go now. make dinner and shower. thank you thank you very much for the help
i really appreciate it

kk
I’m a bard with -2 charisma sad times
Damn
I think you have made a mistake.
you can move your rolls around if need be. maybe swap strength with charisma. being a bard with -2 to charisma is like trying to run a marathon with your shoes tied together
Worth it
You can only get -2 if you roll for stats, and while that is provided for in the rules, it's generally not recommended for new players, and especially not if you don't alreayd have a DM who is telling you to do it. And like DatBoi says, you don't need to go through your stats sequentially. You get 6 numbers and then assign them to abilities, rather than going "and here's my Charisma roll <rolls dice>"
Ok I’ll reroll
If you turn up to a lot of games saying you rolled stats, they will likely ask you to take standard array, point buy, or roll again. It's odd, because it is presented as the first option in the rules, but people don't tend to use it because characters are either too weak (and so will be unsatisfying to play), too strong (so will be unsatisfying to play alongside) or at best, they are as good as if you did standard array or point buy...so why not just go with those in the first place.
Ask your DM if you're even allowed to roll first.
A character that is too high in Ability Scores can be as boring to play as one that is too low.
It went from -2 to 3
Stats are very much something that is usually handled at the table with your DM. You can of course get a set of stats on your own but once that character joins an actual game, be prepared to redo them according to the rules the DM wants to use
Ok
Matt Colville’s “Running the Game” series is great, but it can be a lot to take it. The most practical guide to DMing I’ve come across, even if it isn’t a video, is https://howtogm.guide.
Um how do i play dnd beyond?
Hey I’m looking to for a party with an open spot for a new member?
Im new here
Aight that seems nice, I mainly just have problems with the numbers, I can't decide what the HP and difficulty rating of stuff should be
