leader in what sense? That's not a thing that's really necessary to D&D
As in the 'face' of the group?
He wanted me to get the other guys to take more action/risks
I think what they are asking you to do is to help them make sure things keep flowing. So he might want you to instigate action if nothign is happening, or get people to agree if there's disagreement. That goes back to what I was saying about building consensus.
Exactly
That's exactly what he wanted
Give them an inspiring speech about how dnd is about having fun and taking risks, before doing something cool that’s kinda risky and having it pay off
It's very common as a DM to say "So...what do you want to do", and to be met with a bunch of blank stares like you just showed some dogs a card trick. It's like when you give a lecture and say "any questions" and nobody asks...it's bad! Be the person who leaves it a moment and then goes "well, the suspicious man sounds interesting, lets go look at them"
He definitely wanted me to keep things going, but I'm brand new, so my real question is, advice?
- Listen carefully to what the DM describes. They are probably leaving a few hooks of things that will lead to further adventure.
- If nobody else is moving things forward, be the person who moves things forward. Ask about the aforementioned hooks.
- If the party start obsessing over something clearly silly (like they ignored the guy and want to start playing cards with a random bystander) and the DM is clearly floundering with improv, be the person who suggests getting back to the more obvious plot hooks.
oh and 4) Take notes! DM's love the note-taker
Goddamn it now I need to add a plot hook where you need to play cards with a random bystander
RDR2 already did it
Rdr2?
Let's stay on topic please
hello
Hi I'm new to the server and just wanted to ask how can I find a game
Follow the instructions in #find-a-game
Alterntively, you can use sites such as roll20 or demiplane to find games, or even D&D Beyonds own forums
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
Basic rules are in the post above 👆
@lyric fjord Please stop randomly pinging people
Have a read f the rules first before so you get an idea of what you can make
What is the difference between Wizard and Sorcerer?
wizards have their book and use intelligence as their casting stat. sorcerers are innate casters and use charisma.
A Wizard has the most variety of spells, and can select a loadout of spells on a per-day basis.
A sorcerer has fewer spells at their disposal, but always has access to all of them. They also can use Metamagic points to tweak how their spells work (like hitting multiple targets, or stealth-casting).
ohhh
Wizards tend to optimise towards a particular school of magic, while sorcerer subclasses tend somewhat towards picking a particular elemental damage type...loosely.
Ok I get it
Wizards study for their magic and derive their spells from their spellbook
Sorcerers have a Sorcerous Origin granting them magic, and sorcery points allow them to slightly edit their array of spell slots, or edit a spell a tiny bit.
Thematically: wizards study magic, but sorcerers are magic.
Hello
Hello and welcome 🙂
Im new to dnd stuff you know, i watched few videos but can someone like answer some of my questions
That's what the channel is here for! Ask away.
So i heard that every race have special like abilities so is the abilities decided by the players or the dm or some known rules?
They are decided by the race that the player chooses. DMs may restrict which races can be used, to fit their game.
See the race pages in the basic rules.
Wait sorry what is dnd beyond
Dnd beyond is part of the official DnD pages. The page I linked is the basic rules, as hosted there. It's also availalbe as a PDF, but I linked that version because you can go to a specific page or section.
DnD beyond features a content management system for digital purchases, amongst other tools for running the game.
So its like an official site for dnd?
yeah pretty much!
Originally, it was an independent company but it was bought by Wizards of the Coast. That's why you still see a little bit of dual branding.
e.g. This is also the official site for DnD https://dnd.wizards.com/
Thanks ill see them later
And another question
So if i made a character i can make them literally anything
Like i can say my character is an human but can breath underwater or can’t feel heat you know?
If you make a character, you will probably be expected to make their abilities those listed in the rules. If you want to go outside that, your DM would decide. The reason they might say no is because what you want is too powerful, or because what you want doesn't fit with the story they want to tell.
Yea yea i get it
You can "be anything" in the sense of...you can be a human who is a grizzled old warrior, or someone who ran off with teh circus, or a deposed princess...but not in terms of someone who can fly, breathe underwater or whatever else for free.
Yea i get what you mean
So about the stats how do i put them? I mean the strength, dexterity and the others like how i choose if its 12-10 or less or more?
Build a character on dndbeyond playlist for a few classes
There are three methods for choosing your stats. Whichever one you choose, you will then add on any racial bonuses. They are described in the basic rules here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#3DetermineAbilityScores
Of the three methods, rolling dice is the least commonly practiced, and usually you will only do this if your DM can see you roll. For your frist character, you probably want to consider the Standard Array, which is halfway through that linked section or the "Variant" bit underneath, which is usually called Point Buy.
As for which one to put where, once you have worked out your class, you'll probably know what your main stat will be. Make that your highest. You might have a secondary stat for that class...make that your second highest. Constitution should probably be in your top 3. The rest is essentially flavour, and depends on what else you want your character to be good at. A liar or performer might want better charisma, while an investigator or researcher might want intelligence.
Your charcter probably should be bad at some things. That's by design. it's better to be good at some things and bad at others, rather than mediocre at everything.
Ok thanks
Hello! I’m brand new here and I think I understand the basics of DND but about the character sheet. Can I make my character anything or does it have to be something listed in the official DND website?
That’s up to the DM. More than likely, official options will be accepted over invented ones.
Take a look at the few posts above yours, someone asked a very similar question! You can find a few links to character creation help there!
So should I make two characters sheets in case?
Ah! Thank you!
Having extra characters isn’t a bad move! Also, be willing to work with your DM to tweak your concept(s) so they fit the setting/game in question.
Oh! One more thing, when you start playing DND for the first time. Do you stick with the same DM all the time or can you join other games? Like sticking with the same group all the time?
You can join other games so long as you have the time and ability to keep things mentally sorted.
Okay thank you so much!
So is there anyone can like do a playthrough tutorial? For me or anyone?
You are best off finding a few likeminded friends and trying the free mini-tutorial Intro to Stormwreck Isle https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/itsi
Thats the problem I don’t know anyone that’s interested in dnd
Do you know people who are interested in board games? They may be interested in DnD but haven't had a chance to play it
Or people who really enjoyed Baldur's Gate 3
The people i know only know chess as a board game
In this server, the only place that its appropriate to really look for a group is detailed in #find-a-game . Every other channel, it's off-topic and thus not permitted - mostly because it would be really annoying for every channel to be full of people begging for a DM 😄
Yea but im a dm and a player you know
hey hello
I think DnD sounds cool but i have no idea how to play it but im willing to learn if anyone will take the time to teach me that would be much good 🙂
Unfortunately, it takes a fair amount of time to teach someone the game, and this server has new folks every day, so it's tough to make one-to-one instruction happen. We do have some links to help you get started, though.

Oooo
If you look those over and still have specific questions, this is a good channel to ask in!
okkk
so when i read it can i just go on #looking-for-players
or what dod i do to start a game?
You can either 1) respond to people's posts in that channel or 2) make a post yourself in #750812887697588356, in which case you'd read the instructions in #find-a-game.
I have a questionn
If I have 3 spells in 1st level
So can I use each of them 3 times?
Your spell slots dictate how many spells you can cast.
Each time you cast one of those spells, it will use a 1st-level spell slot.
If you're out of 1st-level spell slots, you can use a higher-level one.
If you're out of spell slots entirely, you can no longer cast those spells.
But in the level up chart or Idk how you call it it says like two 1st level spells and 2 spell slots
So you can cast each spell once, or one of them twice.
Wait whattt
But once your spell slots are gone, that's it.
Think of a spell slot as a dollar. Each time you want to cast a spell, you have to spend a dollar. You have two dollars to spend.
So after I use my spell slots when can I use it again?
After a long rest.
what about a short rest
Only warlocks get them back after a short rest.
What does a short rest and a long rest do
If you've got eight hours to tuck in for the night, sure.
The conditions may not allow you to do so, however.
You can only long rest once every 24 hours.
Only 2 spell slot is not a lot
What class are you playing?
Bard
Part of D&D concerns managing your resources (spell slots, HP, items, etc.).
Cantrips are your friend
I'm beggining in 1st level
Yeah, cantrips can be used without spell slots, so you can cast those as many times as you'd like.
Then when you need something special, you can call on your 1st-level spells.
Wait doesn't bard have 4 level 1 spells?
Yes
It says 4 spells known
Two cantrips and four 1st-level spells.
Since you have only two spell slots, you can cast at most only two of those spells a day.
Using the previous example, those 4 spells are things you can buy in the shop. Each costs $1, but you only have $2.
But I can only use 2 of them
Yep
Right.
Between long rests, yeah
I have true strike and vicious mockery as cantrips it won't help T-T
Wait is true strike a cantrip?
You can cast those as many times as you like, yeah
It is, but dump it.
Vicious mockery is a cantrip
The big spells that spend spell slots do a lot of cool stuff because they use up a resource. Cantrips only feel weaker because they're free!
any filipinos here? looking for a group to join and im still a beginner jdioesjd pls dm me dosdko
So when I cast vicious mockery the enemy needs to make a wisdom saving throw right
Yep.
But how does the dm knows if they fail or succeed it
#find-a-game can point you toward the available groups.
By my spelling DC or however its called
You have a spell DC determined by your stats.
Oh so I'm right
ty!
If the result of their Wisdom saving throw equals or exceeds your spell save DC, they succeed.
Ok I got it
If it's lower, they fail.
Anyway, I'd recommend swapping True Strike for a utility spell: Message, Mending, Mage Hand, Minor Illusion...
Mmmmm Ok
I have a friend that is a sorcerer and she has the cantrip called Toll the dead ISNT IT TOO POWERFUL??
Like take 1d12 damage as a cantrip if I'm right?
It’s a good one, sure.
It's a conditional d12, d8 if the target is not damaged
Still a lottt
Toll the dead does do the most damage of any cantrip, without outside factors, but its a Wisdom saving throw, which is the most common type of saving throw, so many monsters have high wisdom, and it can only do that 1d12 damage conditionally
It is powerful, but d12 is not really that large, for a Bard sure, but many other spellcasters have access to cantrips with much larger damage dies
For pure damage, it’s a lot stronger than Vicious Mockery.
But damage is all it does.
Hello! I just joined here! I just wanted to know how to get started on D&D, I'm very new and haven't started any, campaigns I think they're called? So I joined this to see if I can get some help!

That’s the most damage possible for a cantrip. But bards get more utility options. Vicious mockery could save a life if timed well enough
Welcome! There’s some handy links there to get you started. ☝️
Wait but vicious mockery also just does damage right?
No, read the whole spell
Vicious Mockery has a secondary effect. A very strong one, at that
No, it gives the target disadvantage on their next attack.
Okay!! Thank you!!
In fact most damaging cantrips have a secondary effect
If you play a bard you won’t get too many high damage options, but they have insane support options.
To be honest I might consider giving Bards at my table more options for damaging cantrips
VM is not really for everyone
I just wanna play bard to annoy the dm
...how exactly does that annoy the dm?
I just saw bard stereotypes of them seducing everything and I thought it was funny T-T
That's not a great mind set to have. D&D is a collaborative story telling game. Your job should be to work with your DM to make a great story
Yeah I did made my character a backstory
it's not funny for everyone, and it can even make the DM or other players uncomfortable
make sure others are okay with that first
Purposely trying to derail or distract from the game with antics for the purpose of annoying people will not be very fun for the other people you are playing with. Both the players and the DM
If you want a more fun stereotype, you can spam fireball at level 6
Is it spelled homebrud?
homebrewed?
That, thx
What do you mean
Like does at level 6 you can cast many fireballs?
Bards choose their subclass at level 3. If you choose collage of lore (collage = subclass) you get an expanded spell list at level 6. One of those spells can be fireball.
Not bards I mean in general classes that can cast fireballs
Lore bards can, fiend warlocks can, sorcerers can, and wizards can.
You get fireball at level 5
btw it's college, collage means a collection of photos
They said level 6 because that's when lore bards get to choose spells from other classes.
just mentioning it in case new players get confused
It’s a level 3 spell. You unlock level 3 spells at level 5. It’s confusing, I know.
Evening everyone, quick monk question when i spend a KI point for furious blows can i split the dmg on two enemies (one blow on each in range) or must i use the furious blows on one target only?
Oh
BUT
How can I spam themm not me like the sorcerer if I was a sorcerer
"Level" has different meanings in D&D:
Character level = the overall level of your PC (up to a maximum of 20)
Class level = the level in a specific class
Spell level = the level of the spell (from level 1 to level 9)
U said at level 6 I can spam fireball what I thought it means like a bunch of fireballs in 1 action
No, sorry for the confusion. I meant you can cast fireball every turn
Ohhh ok I get it
Flurry of Blows allows you to make two more attacks as a bonus action. You can choose to attack two different creatures if they're both within range, but you've still gotta roll to hit both of that's what you want!
Flurry of Blows simply says make 2 unarmed strikes, so you can make them against any target you wish that's in range. However, you it says you must do so Immediately after you take the attack action, so you unfortunately do not get to move to a new location if you want to attack someone else
oh I was wondering what furious blows was
tyvm for replies
That's correct. Anything you make up yourself is Homebrew
It can be custom anything
I'm about to start a campaign
Your world, magical items, monsters, backgrounds, classes, subclasses...
Classes are harder to make right
anyone thats still in school interested
I'm a teen dm so id like to play with other teens
I would highly suggest sticking with the original classes if it's your first time playing.
Homebrew classes are extremely difficult to make
Then doesn't every dm homebrew? Because every DnD is the world that the dm invented right?
Not always
Yeah ofc I am
A lot of DMs use the official D&D setting, Forgotten Realms
Ohhh I didn't know
Who here is a teen and needs a campaign to join
hi! i'd be interested!!
forgot the command for that

I'm having trouble playing a redemption paladin character wise any advice? Apparently I can be seen as aggressive?
@lyric fjord these channels are better suited
are there live dnd like videos on youtube of people playing so I can understand how it works?
Yes, lots
That depends on your definition of "aggressive"
Check out Critical Role, Dimension20, The Adventure Zone, but to name a few
Or just such "D&D live play"
Ok thank you
99.99% of D&D games will get into combat at some point, and you would need to defend yourself
I don't get dms that make a whole like setup of their world because it's not the whole world and what if they go to a place that isn't on the setup they prepared and they can see the things that are like very very far from them (the characters) which I think they shouldn't see it? because they should figure that out
I don't have a problem with it it's cool but I don't get it...
I'm sorry I tried reading your question 5 times and I still couldn't figure out what you meant
do you mean a combat map?
Like putting little figures on the table to represent where things are?
Shame. I've hit a wish to start playing DnD again, but all the games available are at times I'm unavailable, hehe.
It's been roughly three years since I last played a game of DnD, only just got back into it recently and want to dip my feet in further down the rabbit hole. My name is Minya and I'm in my 30's, also trans, so I'm hoping for a community that is open and welcoming for me. I'm also quite slow, but enjoy learning new things in the game. :3
Keep looking! And cast a wide net! There's bound to be a game for you out there somewhere, but these things do take time.
The funny thing is, the games start, or run through, times I am asleep, but I'll keep checking in on it. XD
You could try finding games at your local games store, or refresh your memory with some one-shots and start your own campaign
I'm in a stupid place of the world where the "nearest" game store is like 100+ miles away. XD
I have nevernplayed dnd but i would like to learn
where should i startt

Check out some of the links above to get started!
Okk
Actually built like figures of trees and bridges
but it's very big and they can't move it away
Those are custom, painstakingly crafted battlemaps
Are you referring to those? Because….those are the dream to play on
They're not intended for long form play, usually just for a specific encounter
This
also made for video, since it is a paid streaming service
Um…it sounds like you are referring to the battlemap
Then why are they so huge
Because why not
Because its for video ?
But then the party knows theyre going to have a battle there no?
This has varied over the years
It's more for visual representation
They're usually only pulled out after combat has been announced
Well that's what Im saying that no
Early on they did every other episode (roughly) was combat
I watched in dimension 20 they start with them
@flat sun are you referring to their customized DM screens?
But more of just places that would possibly be seen the most
No
Can I just send someone a message
Send one to me
so they will understand what I mean I can't send pics here
Ah, I think I know what you mean. Dimension 20 has a lot of props, which are mostly just there to look cool and hide the DM's secret stuff behind.
Now they can pull the maps and set them up mid episode. In a recent series they brought out 3 in one episode and shocked everyone
if you want to send a picture in this server, upload it to an image hosting site like Imgur, then post a link to that URL in the chat
moreover …they have a professional production staff and a budget, nobody here is NOT using that for a custom battlemap if they had that chance
most people here are on graph paper (if in person)
A handful may have physical terrain
Rest are vtt
Wait so do i make my cahracter firt?
Generally speaking, its best to join a campaign first, because your DM might have their own individual rules for how you create your character, and it will help them fit into that DM's world better if you know what to expect before creating them. However, creating a character is fun, and its a good way to learn the basics of the rules, so it can't hurt to make one ahead of time, so long as you know that you may be required to change it in the future
You definitely can! It's usually recommended to find a DM first, as you never know what their individual rules are like. It'd be really sad to put a lot of work into designing and creating an elf paladin only for your DM to say that there are no elves in their world!
That being said, it's definitely good practice to fill out a Character Sheet. The usual recommendation is to have a few fun, general ideas for characters, which you're willing to edit a bit at the DM's discretion when you find a game.
Oookay
Im literally so new amd i havent even played yet im just learning about the game
I use sketchbook paper and rocks I found one summer
When I used to play in person, I used a chess board and chess pieces as my battle maps
Fireball to F5
That seems like it would work well
I have many questions like: i wanna be a wizard so should i choose a specific race for it to eork well with my class?
There are a couple that would work. Elves get an intelligence score boost. Humans gain boosts to every stat. Ultimately, pick one that race would find the most fun and don’t worry too much about how “optimal” it is.
Unless your DM is a sadist and doesn't allow you to change ability score increases, you don't really need to consider how well your race pairs with your class
Only High Elves do
any race is fine if the DM allows you to change ASIs as mentioned above
For the most part, race doesn't really matter too much when it comes to character building. Choose what you think is cool! Everything else will work out.
Alright
Hey there. I've been trying to find a community to settle in, but most of the servers I joined were a bit overwhelming to me. I'm a new player and I prefer to play with people my age (mid 20s/late 20s). Any ideas on how to go about that? Thanks in advance.

I have a questoonn can you use reaction spells when you’re prone?
If you have a specific question, you can ask it here and we'd be happy to answer it for you
As long as you meet the trigger for the reaction, sure!
Of course. Being prone does not restrict your reactions in any way
Oh ok
You'd have to purchase the Xanathar's Guide book to get the details on the subclass. Or, you can purchase just that subclass individually, if you're using DnD Beyond!
Xanathar's Guide to Everything is a book. It is an expansion to the core rules of 5e. You can purchase it in a bookstore, or through an online vendor like D&D Beyond.

What spells can a paladin cast at level 2
See for yourself:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/spells#PaladinSpells
Thank you!
At level 2, paladins have 2 first level spell slots, which means they can prepare first level spells (a number equal to your Charisma modifier + half your paladin level, rounded down). Old Man just linked the list they can choose from
i am a complete new player to dnd i have my friend and me with i need someone to help me can some cone teach and play with us
Unfortunately, this server doesn't really have private tutors like that
Well we unfortunately don't all have time and bandwidth to teach the game one on one so I suggest reading the free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules

hi
Hello
Hi
Haii
🧹 all clean
Tabula rasa
ok so i asked someone here whats the most straightforward class and they said barbarian, aside from killing things in a blind rage is there any other things a barbarian can do?
hi
What's up
Depends on subclass. But yeah it's mostly killing things in a blind rage. It really is the simplest class!
question: can wizards make their own spells? in the dnd beyond character maker there were some spells that i could learn. i also need help figuring out how those work too.
what subclasses does it have? while i do like to kill enemies i kinda want to branch out, you know?
That's really up to the DM if they allow homebrew,.
No, wizards cast spells exactly as written. Sorcerors get points to tweak certain aspects of spells.
Fighter is also simple-ish. A bit more complex then barb, but still just hit bad things hard.
depends on teh DM
I mean, besides fighter.
go bonk bonk bonk
Well the totem lets you choose between animal-themed bonuses. Storm herald, elemental-themed bonuses. Wild magic gets random magical effects. Zealot can die and be brought back...but all of them still rely on a lot of screaming and slashing!
hmm
There's a few more
wolf totem gives allies advantage too
Ancestral guardian makes enemies worse at attacking anyone but you.
wild magic adds random effects to your rage and lets you restore spell slots and detect magic
If that doesn't appeal, consider a fighter. They typically have more options.
The ancestrall guardian helps act more as a tank
They have multiple subclasses 😟
All classes have multiple subclasses.
Not at level 3
fighters have:
- weeb
- Horseman
- archer
- gladiator
- magic knight
- twin knight
- psychic fighter
- battlemaster
well if I do join a campaign i kinda want my character to be a something like, say hes interegatting someone for whatever reason, and they get him to talk but they are still a threat, they like tie em to a tree and go on their merry way
ooh gladiator and battle master sound cool
They do
battlemaster is the more complicated one tho
damn
Every class gets access to all of its subclasses at a certain level
gladiator is the most straightforward
Battlemaster is one of the most popular.
There is no subclass called Gladiator.
For barbarian and fighter it’s level 3
Is that fighting style or martial archetype?
oh, sorry, not gladiator, i meant champion
subclasses
Martial archetype, aka subclass
Fighting style is also a kind of subclass, no?
No, it’s a class feature of its own.
no
A subclass is always a list of benefits you gain over the levels, and is shown on a seperate page
that just says how youre going to play the character's attack style
Oh
FIghting style: Minor benefit that all fighters can get.
Subclass: A set of benefits that make up your character
btw what's a modifier?
The little +/-(number goes here) beside a stat or skill
You have an ability score that will be 8-20. This translates into a modifier that's -1 to +5. That's what gets added on to a roll related to that ability score - it modifies.
e.g. STR 14 (+2)
dont know which to play tho
If you have a 13 in a stat, the modifier is +1, for example
Rogue is definitely simpler, but Paladin is totally doable
Once you have a game, see which roles need filling.
leaning toward rogue tbh
cuz the expertise thing
if you play rogue, make sure to stick close to your members
I’ve never played a rogue but I will eventually
why
to rob em?
so you can activate Sneak Attack more often. and use them as a bigger target so you dont get hit a lot
rogues are squishy
oh yeah rogue is a squishy
aye
I like paladin too since hes basically the tank
best not to draw too much attention to yourself
but i have yet to play a actual game
As squishy as most spellcasters
also big damage from smites
I never really understood smites like does it correlate ith an oath or do i choose a god and they give me a smite, if so what gods are there? Can i choose the god of cheese if i so wanted to?
uh, smites is part of the class itself
you use up a spell slot to deal 2d8 + 1d8 per spell level above one radiant on a hit
i see
doubles on a crit, so if you roll a crit on an attack, smite
Does the strength dexterity etc areas grow? (The left most side of the character sheet)
every 4 levels you can choose to add +2 to one stat or +1 to two stats
it does not grow by itself
Okay thank you
The lvl 20 ability barb gives a +4 bonus to the str score though
Hi I'm new to DnD and don't know how to start. I like to be a DM sometime but I think its to far fetched, yet. can someone help me how to start?
Have you read the basic rules?
as in the dnd rule books?
The free Basic Rules
Basic Rules PDF
https://media.wizards.com/2018/dnd/downloads/DnD_BasicRules_2018.pdf
Basic Rules on D&D Beyond
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
thanks mate I will look into it
my party is in waterdeep now, and i thought if maybe there are clerics in that town that can cast revivify on one of us if we die
for a hefty cost though
Do keep in mind that Revivify only works if it’s been less than 1 minute since the target died
Raise dead
yeah
i would like to think that my character's life is worth at least 750 gold to my party but maybe that's a far cry for them
raid some diamonds from a noble
750 gold??? A fifth level spell is WAY more than that. Finding an NPC capable of casting a 5th level spell is extremely rare in and of itself. To actually pay them to cast the spell usually costs 20,000 or more
Im very new to dnd and planning on making a plasmoid character is sorcerer a viable class choice for it?
yeah class race combinations arent a big thing to worry about for newcomers as long as your ability scores line up with your main stat
Hiya, im completely new to dnd, and im really interested in it but i have no clue how to get started, is this the right place to get some help with getting started? If anyone wants to help you can send me a dm, or do it here, but i dont wanna get in the way of other conversations
Welcome! There’s some helpful links here to get you started:
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
Thank you!
Its stated that plasmoids can have 'a head, one or two arms, and one or two legs.' I assume this is referring to functional limbs, if this assumption is correct can I have additional non-flunctional limbs or is it up to the dm
Ask your DM but typically flavor changes (stuff that doesn't impact core game mechanics) are usually not a problem.
heyo, i'm entirely new to dnd but i'm very interested in it, but i don't know how joining a group works or if there's any schedules for play, and if i'm able to leave at any time if i've got other important stuff to do
?looking
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
^ Here's information on how to use our LFG channels.
Please read it carefully. It's amazing how many posts we have to remove because folks don't read and follow the rules.
btw is it normal for DM's to keep the players poor?
just did a quest for an NPC and they scammed us for a liability we have to now maintain with gold frequently (||a really unmaintained house in waterdeep||)
last session was a huge spending spree with no action
what can i do about this? the rewards for bounties/loot don't go over 100 gold and we're bleeding money constantly
sorry i had to bump this since it got buried
Talk to your dm abt it if you don’t like it
Each DM and game is different
i mean, they're already aware of that, we've had really tough combat for little reward
There's some benefit to making sure the party can't just "buy" their way out of a problem though.
it's not to the point we can't afford to live, but we've been scammed and the party economy hasn't been this bad before
even then, our DM says that he's carefully picking every single encounter to be as fair as possible to not cause a TPK but we've been really close lately
the reward for the risk we're taking doesn't seem that viable
Is there any way to find a simple game just for beginners so i can get a feel on how dnd works, cant find any in #looking-for-players
You can post that you're looking in #750812887697588356 (read #find-a-game to learn how to do this).
And you can check #looking-for-community for other D&D servers that may have D&D games you can join.
You’re probably gonna struggle to find a game specifically for new players, however most will be new player friendly even if they don’t directly state it
Helloooo
Welcome!
how do u determine skills when making a character sheet?
The modifier you add to a skill check is the modifier of the ability score used in the skill, plus your proficiency bonus IF you are proficient in that skill
You can read more about the rules concerning ability checks and skills here
Hi everyone! My friends and I are starting for the first time on Saturday. Wondering if it’s worth it to invest in some 2D miniatures? Was thinking of getting one pack just to start.
Could just start with paper cutout minis and see if it's helpful or not before investing in standard minis.
ive noticed some magic weapons have like a common prefix, like vicious or warning or something. Is there a place where I could see a list of all of these?
https://www.dndbeyond.com/equipment
You'll be able to see anything in the free basic rules and anything you own or have access to via DnDBeyond.
thank u 🙏
Hello, uhhh idk how to rlly do or say this, but I'm a complete newbie, and I really wanna get into DnD, how do I learn how to do everything? I'm nervous ngl bc idk anything abt how the game works and I don't wanna make people think I'm dumb-

I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
After you read the rules and/or watch the tutorial videos, feel free to ask questions here.
Tysm, I appreciate it! :]
I'm so excited to finally learn abt this game and (hopefully) play it for the first time! :]]]
Okay it's been like 5 second and I love critical role's vibe

GUH
NUMBERS
What about 'em?
DnD
Numbers
I'm bad at math 😭😭
Woe to newcomer DnD players who are great at english but bad at math
theres not really much maths beyond simple addition
There are tools that help but its nothing more than adding usually
I find percentages complicated, + I do not understand this game yet
So I have so many questions ghsjdjejd
Bc like they're not even mentioning how character creation works
there isnt really that many percentages
the first four chapters of the basic rules is dedicated to character creation
the first chapter is a step-by-step walkthrough of it
I'm sorry this is embarrassing I'm GUH
its fine, everyone has to start somewhere
Nothing guh I'm still learning the rules
Tysm to you and everyone else I've interacted w so far I've legit not met a nicer community, let alone on discord 😭
Also I'm reading the rules and this seems very interesting so far, but ik if I try to learn any of it now I'm gonna burn myself out by trying to understand everything in one go. Im gonna have to research and memorize this stuff over a couple days 😭
the part of the game that trips everyone up is more often the words and not the numbers
even veterans still have intense debates over an interpretation that still hasn't been definitively figured out for 9 years now
Yeah ngl
I think the numbers are simple but the way everything interlocks verbally feels- clunky idk
That's just how it is to me, maybe it's bc I'm autistic idek
Things are kinda simple though - but feel free to ask questions to clarify specific things
Most queries will be met with a link to the rule that governs the topic, but some can actually be quite weird and need an actual explanation over what the basic rules presents
Don't worry about memorizing it yet.
Just start by getting a feel for what what rules are where.
You can always look them up if/when you need to.
You don't have to have all the answers; you just have to know where to find them.
But at a bare minimum, I’d recommend learning these common terms, what to do on your turn, and how your character’s own abilities work.
Huh, the help action in that turn reference sheet is wrong.
I'm someone new to DND as a whole, and I'm wondering if you make characters before you find a dm and bring that character into that game or do you create them based off of already created story?
Hii
Generally you wait for once you’ve found a group so it can fit the story better
thanks
Is it theoretically possible to have the same character if I make it fit their lore?
Theoretically.
Like what if I made someone who had a curse of immortality, but not invulnerability in any sense. They die, but they come back with no memories of who they were, and so every campaign they grapple with amnesia? Idk just spit balling how this would work
I think it would be interesting but is most likely against the rules idk
Oh epic :]
I was thinking sort of a cannon busters thing where each death adds to a rose to a flower tattoo mural all across their body I think that would be cool yeah
There is actually a race in Van Richten's Guide To Ravenloft, called Reborn, that's basically almost exactly that. A creature that's already died, is hard to kill again, and has recollecitons of their past life
Oh, sick! :]]
I love this community already ngl imma stay here for a while :]
The DnD universe is honestly so cool to me
So one of my friends campaigns has him playing a shaddar Kai and he mentioned astral elves. I looked them up and omg I want to play one but I have no idea how to go about that. Never played dnd before
I'm honestly so confused it's been like 2 hours I think
i didnt know this was a channel but how do i play dnd? ive seen alot of videos of it and it seems kinda funny and fun

Ey so after i learn the rules, how to play and stuff, how do i get in a game with other people or smth?
#750812887697588356 I think
#find-a-game can point you in the right direction.
Oh mb lol
alr then thanks you two : D
Spam did all the stuff I'm also a newbie lol
same ive never played dnd before but i recently saw a couple youtubers i watch play it and it seemed very unhinged to say the least, so i wanted to try it out
I've listened to campaigns a lot but never quite grasped the functions
There are plenty of play throughs of D&D games on Youtube and Twitch. Dimension 20 and Critical Roll are two biggest D&D shows (these are highly polished entertainment shows and don't necessarily represent what really gameplay is like at most tables).
D&D involves a lot of improv, back and forth between the players and the Dungeon Master (DM).
😱, my apologies
Did the sever change since the last time I was here?
I'm trying to get back to the battles and all so I'm a lil lost
Almost a year ago, at this point.
I love dingo doodles' Gold Rush campaign
Hellooo im about to go to bed but im looking for someone to help me get started and possibly play my first session?
Have you had a look at the basic rules?
It’s not really containable in a single video, there is the handbook helper series, but it’s better as something to watch to clear up any questions you may have, you should still read the basic rules themselves
It’s all linked in the pinned messages
thing is I struggle with reading
not beicause im illiterate
its just most of the time it can get overwhelming
but ill try my best!
Fair. You can try just watching the handbook helper series, and ask here to clarify anything then
Ok so after ive gone over the rules, how shall I proceed?
Once you have a basic understanding of the rules, then you can make a practice character
ok so im new here. how do i get started to join a game as a player?
Have you had a look at the basic rules?
ive played a long time ago, just dont remember much. whre would i do that
They’re linked in the pinned messages
ok
I think I made a character sheet some time ago but its in spanish, so id have to translate it
Send help I'm completely new to DnD but literally cannot retain an attention span to read rules and stuffs -Oliver(We use these as a DID sys)
Have you tried watching videos covering the rules?
Hi I'm new to dnd and have been wanting to play for awhile but never been able to til now and I reasonly made my dnd character using dice and had both her and her brother help me since they very big on dnd and have played in many times
I'm just been wondering if I can use my dnd character I made or do I need to make another one
Depends
Some games will want you to make a specific character for them
Others will let you use another character
Probably in #character-discussion
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RO2qv5Uin9c ill be watching this for the rules
You see I drew my dnd character with them
question: are stats based on dice rolls?
Yes
They can be.
Everything is, and god I was lucky
I can't retain any sort of attention span to actually watch a video for it
My attention span has dissipated because of ADHD and TikTok -Oliver
like if ur rolling for charisma and you roll a 5 then ur charisma is 5?
?tag new abilities
Abilities
Six abilities provide a quick description of every creature's physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
For each ability, your character has an ability score, a number from 1 to 20. There are three ways to determine ability scores, and your DM will let you know which to use. (If you don’t have a DM yet, choose Standard Array or Point Buy.)
- Roll the Dice. Roll 4d6 and record the total of the highest three. Do this six times, and then assign each total to a different ability.
- Standard Array. Assign each of the following numbers to a different ability: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Point Buy. Choose your own ability scores by spending points.
After assigning your ability scores, determine your ability modifiers, a number from -5 to +5, using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table.
It depends on what method your game or DM is using to determine abilities.
Oh, that works, too lol
It’s atypical to roll abilities in order.
i'll just do the second one
But yes, if one of your totals is a 5, you’d assign that to one of your abilities.
so how do i find a game in find a game
i read through all of it and im still confused
I wanna just throw myself into a DnD game now
I wanna understand how it works but videos and articles and stuff confuse me and I cannot pay attention to them

Good luck
Or try reading through the whole #find-a-game channel (again)
Although I’m not sure I’d recommend an online game for getting started, it will work if you don’t have a game in your local areas
Hey, I wanted to ask if theres a character sheet I can fill in from my computer, like type on it yk, if not can someone link me a character sheet?

I wonder if I could make The Beheaded from Dead Cells
If you want help creating a character, you should post about it in #character-discussion and the people there should help you out
if a creature that a druid is wildshaping into has opposable thumbs and sufficient fingers and the arm structure to use a weapon/shield, can it use a weapon/shield?
Dm discretion
I don’t see why not, but this^
thanks
i was also wondering if a monster has multiattack and lets say for example makes 2 claw attacks, does it have to make 1 claw attack per claw, or can it make 2 attacks with 1 claw
Same answer
That’s more flavour than anything
sup
well i was thinking a monster holding an item in one hand (and thus unable to do a claw attack with that hand) but still has one claw free, would it lose one of its attacks or still do both
how do i make a d&d group?
Get a bunch of people who want to play together
4-7 is my suggestion
One of you agrees to be the dm
how exactly do i find these people/
Depends if you want to play in person or online.
prob online
You can make a post in #looking-for-players, or reply to posts in #750812887697588356

also hwo should i introduce myself when messaging the DM bc they said to give an introduction
just say who you are and how much experience you have
who i am like name?
Name pseudonym nickname, I’d prob say something like “high I’m enoki I’ve played dnd for +5 years in a few full campaigns and lots of oneshots, I like playing support classes but sometimes play the front liner when needed. I like the concept of your campaign and would like to know more”
ty that helps out alot
Samee
Have you read the free basic rules?
Yeah im reading them but havemt read them all yet, i feel like i still have no clue tho.-
Concentrate on the first few chapters of making a character to start with
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
It's linked above.
Okayy
I am going to dm for my friends (they are way more newbie than me) and I asked my friend (Sorcerer) to send me her spells but I looked and all of them are not for sorcerers😭😭
hello! newcomer here. so is there a way to play with bots when playing digitally?
And she got mad at me for telling her late that she can’t use it. Is it bad if a sorcerer uses like warlock/wizard spells??
As a new player how do I move around without a combat map?
D&D doesn't have AI bots - it's a human-driven game.
You'd tell your DM you move to the other side of the room, or travel across the field, or say you want to go to the market in the city, and so on.
What subclass of sorcerer?
Lunar sorcery
they get a bonus expansion to their spells
Also, only one sorcerer spell appears on no other class's spell list - Chaos Bolt
can you send their spell list? ill check if the problem spells are from the expansion or not
Also, some may be from the TCoE expanded sorcerer spells feature.
yeah that isnt available to her at all
The only spell that she can use is dancing lights
Race?
high elf gives a wizard cantrip
high elf*
Animal friendship
Maybe there should've been some more communicating regarding the character creation process since they're new and all
I think that’s how it’s called
I’m also new so
Do you have a link to the character sheet?
yeah animal friendship she couldnt get either
We haven’t started session 0 yet 😭
This saturday I am starting with them then we fill the character sheet
I made them a whole presentation on how to fill it
Wel it is a lot especially spell casters
I am thinking maybe they can do a little combat in session 0 so they’ll understand how it works
And they can have fun and not just filling the character sheet
So in session 1 they will know whats a saving throw for example…
not too late then, you can tell them during that session 0 what they can and cant take
I want their spells to be ready before session 0
I mean their spells list
I mean my party is
Fighter,Rogue,Paladin,Sorcerer,Bard
And Paladin’s don’t start with spells and don’t have cantrips right??
??*
they only get that at 2nd level
when they accomplish things worthy of it - defeating monsters, figuring out puzzles, however they make their way through an encounter successfully.
For example, if a cult is summoning a demon, and they don't stop it in time but defeat the demon - award XP.
If they do stop the cult before they summon the demon, maybe award them more XP.
Ohhh ok
also iirc you give the xp to the whole party not just the one who land the final hit
Since it's often better to not use XP purely for "you killed a thing, you get points" - if you kill a knight on the side of the road, you get the points for killing them? despite maybe it being antithetical to everything so far? oof.
inspiration is a "you're roleplaying well, you get one advantage" thing
my DM gave inspiration for recapping last session so you can do that as well
Usually when they do something really good in character or are smart about their surroundings and remember details you've mentioned
give them motivation to take notes lol
This is very good, too
Can I give them more than 1 inspiration in a session?
Yeah
it's per-player. If Durvan, the guy with a flaw about gambling, goes and gambles, and the player doesn't complain about losing money, it's a good moment to give inspiration as their gameplay is being affected by roleplay.
the only limit is that it doesn't stack. You either have inspiration or don't.
Wait fr
Ohh ok
That said you can rule-0 it and let it stack, but homebrewing rules can be extremely precarious when you don't know what's loadbearing and what's a decoration.
hello, I'm completely new here and have only played one very simplistic "dnd" campaign where im pretty sure we didn't follow very many rules. where can I get started with the community?

Hello.
Hi
Can someone explain me what silvery barbs does?
It’s a reaction spell that makes the enemy reroll their d20
BUT I don’t get what it does like does it makes the enemy encourage another player?
You magically distract the triggering creature
Basically you make the enemy roll at disadvantage and then give advantage to a friendly creature.
It does use your reaction for the turn.
tnx. so players need to know about all the stuff in the fantasy world. right?
Not all of it, just the important parts
You don't need a comprehensive history of icewind dale just to play phandelver and below
"You magically distract the triggering creature and turn its momentary uncertainty into encouragement for another creature."
You do both the things - you distract it, and turn that uncertainty into encouragement.
Really players just need to know the basic game mechanics and what their character can do.
Everything else can be provided by the DM and the story/adventure they all experience together.
Isn’t this spell like strong for level 1??
tnx
it costs a spell slot, every, single, time. That's the kicker. And it costs your reaction.
It is considered a strong spell but also you only have so many spell slots and since it uses a reaction, you can only use it as a reaction. And you only get 1 reaction a round.
Ohh right
For the same resource you could do ~10 damage to two, maybe three things
its a game of costs and resource management
How do I join a DND game in the discord server?
Please read (carefully) #find-a-game . It explains how to use our LFG channels.
#750812887697588356 is where you advertise that you're looking for a group/game to join.
#looking-for-players is where folks advertise they need players for their games
#looking-for-community is D&D community servers looking for folks to join (they often have D&D games)
#paid-looking-for-game - is where folks advertise games for players (but it requires payment).
If I cast a spell and it fails do I lose a spell slot?
Generally yes.
You spent the resources to cast - even if it doesn't cuase the desired effect.
You cast a spell, expending the slot. Then, the effects happen. There’s nothing saying that if the effects don’t go how you want, you get the slot back
Does anyone have the dnd rulebook?
I've noticed the player's handbook is quite poor at explaining the actual order of combat steps, movement, actions and making an actual attack. It's far too condensed and doesn't explain the actual steps need for a new player. It's literally 1 page for all of that. However, this page on the Dnd5e website does a much better job. https://dnd5e.info/combat/ Which begs the question, why does the player's manual have this quite bad limitation, when it's the core 'game loop' part of DnD? Yes later on it goes over "Using ability scores" but as an abscract notion, not actual steps a player performs.
That's not a newcomer question, that'd be a #dnd-discussion topic
I have fully created a D&D character, this is my first time. Do i just go find players and start a game?
Pretty much! Find a group and start playing!
noice, ty
Check out #find-a-game to read info on how to find a group/game and instructions on how to use our LFG channels
Wait I'm confused if someone with a weapon attacks you they need to roll if they hit but if they attack you with magic you need to roll a saving throw?
hello
That depends on the spell.
Some do require an attack roll instead of a saving throw.
Some don’t require either.
But regardless, the spell itself will say what to do.
Fire Bolt, for example, says:
Make a ranged spell attack against the target.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/fire-bolt
Hey, i cant seem to find the backrounds, can someone show me them?
Where are you looking?
Page.. 38
Of what?
The player's handbook? Basic rules?
Backgrounds are found in Chapter 4: Personality and Background
Backgrounds
Basic rules, sorr6 im in the middlw of class
Thank you!
Pay attention in class, this channel will be here later
But i wanna do this now, if i donr ill be too lazy to do it later
It's a contested ability check (each side makes an ability check and compare results)
The attack rolls Strength (Athletics) and the defender rolls Dexterity (Acrobatics) or Strength (Athletics)
If the attack rolls higher than the defender, they're grappled
It is what it is, do class
Mmmm nyope
Besides im in math learning about polinomials or whatever, i wont need it in the future lol
If I cast a spell and miss do I lose a spell slot?
Yes, after you cast a spell, you lose that spell slot no matter what happens to that spell
Whattt but then I can’t use my spells for the whole session
Hello
Part of what you’re practicing in any class is the ability to concentrate, to focus, to learn—and you DO need that in the future. 😏 /educatormode
Youre twlling a person with adhd to concentrate? Lmao i can barley do that lol
Until you rest enough, yea
But then it’s really weak thenn
Can bards have weapons at least?
Like maybe light weapons
You can check their class features to see which weapons a class is proficient with.
Weapons: Simple weapons, hand crossbows, longswords, rapiers, shortswords
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/bard#ClassFeatures
Technically any class can use any weapon, but you generally want to use weapons you're proficient with.
A College of Swords bard specializes in weapon use, if you wanted to go all-in there.
And Valor bard
I have a question so what if a player wants to attack someone in the head but in the head it will be harder to aim but how does it work? Do I give the player to roll with disadvantage?
There are no rules in D&D fifth edition for 'called shots' (what you're describing)
It's assumed that when you attack someone, you're already aiming for the most deadly place you can
Ohhh so when it's like 20
Then it means they really succeeded
I don't get what cunning action does
" Starting at 2nd level, your quick thinking and agility allow you to move and act quickly. You can take a bonus action on each of your turns in combat. This action can be used only to take the Dash, Disengage, or Hide action. "
That's what google says but I don't understand it does it gives you another bonus action?
It allows you to use the listed actions (Dash, Disengage, Hide) as bonus actions, instead of actions
OHHHHH
Dash, Disengage, and Hide are all described in the “actions in combat” section of the basic rules. They are normally an action to do. Cunning action allows you to do them as a bonus action
Ok I get it
I tried to do a mini combat with my 2 friends just to prepare when I actually dm and it's sooo stressing I always forget the rules...
Wait if an enemy is like 5 feet away from me I can use a reaction?
You can only use reactions when the trigger for them is met.
For example, the Opportunity Attack reaction is triggered when an enemy leaves your melee range
You can make an opportunity attack when a hostile creature that you can see moves out of your reach. To make the opportunity attack, you use your reaction to make one melee attack against the provoking creature. The attack occurs right before the creature leaves your reach.
A reaction generally occurs during another character/creature’s turn, not yours.
When they attempt to leave, you attack them right before they do it.
Isn't melee range like 5 feet away from you?
Yep, so when a creature leaves that range, you can swing at them.
Depends on your weapon
Some weapons have the Reach proprety, which means they have a range of 10ft
But when they leave isn't it harder to attack?
In what way?
If they are close to you then leave you can use a reaction basically
but when they leave how can you attack
Read the section above that I copy and pasted from the rules. I bolded the part that explains it
Imagine they’re walking away from you to engage another combatant. When their back is turned, you have an opening to attack. That’s narratively what’s happening, but mechanically it’s as Colossus describes.
Ohhhh ok
But what if they walk away with like front facing you
It’s abstract.
There are optional rules for facing, but those are not commonly used.
Still happens because of the mechanics.
In D&D, creatures don't actually "face" a specific direction. You are just assumed to be looking in all directions at once. There is no such thing as "in front of" or "behind" you. So, the rules for opportunity attacks give you a mechanical definition of when it happens, and its up to the player and the DM to describe why it happens
It’s easy to get lost in the possible exceptions to the rules, but I’d recommend not worrying about those as you try to understand the base rules themselves.
Mmmmmm Ok
Worth noting there are optional rules for that in the DMG.
Though I don't think they're commonly used.
Something you could discuss with your DM, anyway.
I did mention that! #dnd-newcomers message

Not sure why that is.

Hello, I am new to the community! I was curious if there is a community based in Nova Scotia that gathers to play?
Are you looking for IRL games?
https://locator.wizards.com/ make sure you change it to stores, it doesn’t show every LGS but it’s a start
Do you get a bonus to your armor class when you have heavy armor? I searched in google and didn’t tell me if you do
what armor type you are wearing determines your Armor Class. Its not a "bonus." Its a set number
If you are wearing Plate armor, your AC is 18. If you are wearing chain mail, your AC is 16
Where can I find this information
Plate armor probably has disadvantages
Om everything that needs dexterity no?
Like stealth
Just stealth specifically. It doesn't affect anything else
Can anyone have armor?
Have you looked at the basic rules?
Is it a basic rule??
Yes
👆all in here
Your class determines what armor proficiencies you have. Anyone can wear any armor, but there are some big downsides to wearing an armor that you don’t have proficiency in
How can I know what classes are proficient in what armors
It’s one of the first things written in each class’s description
hii umm me and my 2 friends have 0 experience in dnd and were looking for a dungeonmaster who can teach us the ropes? just a short practice session will do. No need for a full on campaign
can anyone help?
#find-a-game has all the details
Hey sos im filling in my character sheet, and im at the part where im filling in my classes proficiancy, where do I put the following?
armor:
weapons:
Which class did you pick?
I've literally nothing to start with but the D&D Beyond app
It will list those at the top of their class features.
In the proficiencies box in any particular order. I usually do Armor, weapons, languages, Misc.
Bottom left of the 1st character sheet
proficiencies and languages?
No one is expected to have all the rules memorized. Looking things up while you play is a very normal part of the game. A skilled DM is not one who knows every rule, but one who know where to find every rule.
same box @lyric fjord
Once you play for long enough the rules become a part of your DNA
Ok

I have another question I’m so confused
You can use 1 action and 1 bonus action in a turn but what about interaction and movement
Like can you use them too
Yes
Interaction isn't a thing, that's part of your action
It's called an Object Interaction
And movement is something you can do on your turn in addition to any actions, bonus actions, or reactions
hii can someone teach us how to play dnd?
Please don't randomly ping people
If you want to find a game, follow the link to #find-a-game
oh oops i accidentally replied to that
You can ask people questions here I suggest you read the free basic rules

hi
How good is the elf at speaking common? (Im listing it in my profincies box and idk how to put it as,) are they fluid?
All PCs can speak common
Languages. You can speak, read, and write Com m on and Elvish. Elvish is fluid, with subtle intonations and intricate grammar. Elven literature is rich and varied, and their songs and poem s are fam ous am ong other races. Many bards learn their language so they can add Elvish ballads to their repertoires.
Unless you want to roleplay that you don’t speak it very well
alr
Oh coolsss
Can i ask for a favor btw?
Im trying to fill in ssmy character sheet on my own character sheet, with some guidence from you guys but its my first time doing it fully myself, could you maybe revise it to see if something is wrong with it when im done?
Yep! You can share it in #character-discussion if you want someone to double-check everything.
Cool ty!
Can someone tell me what page of the handbook the ability scores and modifers are on please?
So is there like a general rules that i can read ?
It’s in chapter one. Don’t know the page number, but you can find it here instead:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#AbilityScoresandModifiers
Yep! Right here:

Question? the race I chose was elf, If I dont see anything to add or subtract a modifer do I put +0?
example ``Natural athleticism, bodily power
Important for
Barbarian, fighter, paladin
Racial Increases
Mountain dwarf (+2), Dragonborn (+2), Half-orc (+2), Human (+1)
``
What kind of elf?
High Elf
In the race itself, it will tell which ones to increase.
All elves get +2 DEX.
And high elves get +1 INT as well.
I mean in the big box
Which big box?
I think they do
So you had a 6 for DEX, then added the +2 for being an elf?
Yea
Awesome
Then all you need is this table here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#AbilityScoresandModifiers
Find your STR score on the left (10-11), then write the number on the right (+0) in that big box.
And then do the same for the rest.
Yeah, looks good!
Cleric
FWIW, then, the Quick Start suggestions for a Cleric say this:
First, Wisdom should be your highest ability score, followed by Strength or Constitution.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/cleric#CreatingaCleric
what does FWIW mean?
Not that you have to follow that, but it's generally good advice.
"For What It's Worth"
You also don't have to use your stats to dictate roleplay. "I want my character to be smart." That doesn't mean you need to inflate your Intelligence score.
pretty accurate
ohh
Wisdom is important for you because it's your spellcasting ability.
You can. You just don't have to. It's a common misconception.
