does the paladins divine smite and eldritch smite stack?
Those actually do
They're separate features, and as long as you can afford using both, you can pop both in one attack.
(at least as far as i recall)
But remember, Divine Smite can use any spell slot, but Eldritch Smite has to use a spell slot provided by Pact Magic.
(They also stack with the smite spells, like Searing/Branding/Wrathful, etc, Smite)
okay is this thing alive?
This server is always on.
cuz the timestamps make me think this server is boarderline dead
Lulls happen as folks have other things happening besides discussing things on the server - this is natural.
I came here in hopes of trying table top again for the first time in like 5yrs
Also id:browse may point you to other, more active channels. As always though, please stay on topic and use the most appropriate channel as per the server rules.
Well weclome to the official D&D Discord server!
Thanks.
Have you played D&D before?
Does Baulder's Gate 3 count? Cuz i tried a homebrew dnd game 5 some years ago and it kinda went sour when I found out some of the players rigged the game in their favor
Yeah I think Baldur's Gate 3 counts - it's not exactly the same as TTRPG D&D but it's based on D&D (with tweaks to make it work well as a video game).
We have #baldurs-gate-3-spoilers and #1136736147817631967 for Baldur's Gate 3 discussions.

I've beaten BG3 once already and am trying to play it completely different on my second playthrough
i've also made a character sheet already, i've rolled my stats as is traditional as far as I know

any tips for a beginner starting their first campaign?
As a player or a DM?
Learn your characters traits and abilities, don’t worry about making mistakes and have fun
My number one tip for both player and DM is to focus on having fun - making sure everyone at the table is safe and having fun.
www.dndbeyond.com/sheet-pdfs/Krystalmouse_107526442.pdf this is my sheet
thanks :>
I was thinking of making something else but I figured a bard would be a good starting point as its a support class
Your dexterity is really low there! Be careful of enemy fireballs.
Also make sure to equip your armor and other equipment.
I rolled those stats with the self-rule of no take-backs unless I rolled a nat 1
to try and make the stats legit
Your DM may have you reroll or use Standard Array - so there's a chance things can get better.
cuz if you can just make up your stats it kinda makes it less geninue i guess?
Well 4d6 and drop lowest dice is one of the ways to generate stats, there is also Standard Array - a set pool of numbers (15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8), and then there is Point Buy.
I rolled them using the Beyond 20 UI
That won't change what UndyingNoob has said though
Your DM will want to see the dice rolled usually.
You may very well need to re-do your stats for that character if you want to take them into a campaign
is my dex that bad though? I know anything under 10 is a neg modifier but I thought since I was a bard that stat didn't matter much
That's more of a #character-discussion thing
fair
Greetings from Tennessee : )
Welcome
Ty
Currently I’ve been playing Baulders Gate III which is very fun and I heavily recommend it. And decided to get into the table top game, currently I have the physical players hand book and a decent little starter set but sadly I’ve yet to get an actual group to do a campaign together which sucks.
can i be a warlock and a fighter for my character? i don’t really know how character classes work yet
I’d reckon that’s a #character-discussion question
oh!! sorry🤞
You can, it's called multiclassing
However, it's an optional rule and not a simple one at that
okay!! tysm🔥‼️
rerolled my stats: www.dndbeyond.com/sheet-pdfs/Krystalmouse_107526442.pdf
That's looking better - and again you'll want to make sure this is cleared by your DM. They may have you roll the stats in front of them or use standard array.
kk
I personally prefer point but myself but it is what it is
what? you mean you have so many points you can spend in stats?
it's a whole table of what score costs how many points
it's not 1:1, it gets progressively more expensive to 'buy' the next point in a particular score
but you can replicate standard array with it
Yeah see https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#VariantCustomizingAbilityScores to see how it works.
oh so kinda similar to how ddo and BG3 did it
Ye.
trying to find a group is like finding a needle in a haystack though, i looked in the find a game channel and anyone i sent a message to hasn't replied. Was hoping to jump into a game this morning but i guess i'm waiting
It takes longer than a few hours
👆
Got have patience and perseverance
You call that pain? Try actually getting a campaign together irl at a tabletop shop that barely anyone goes to for dnd. Mostly just magic the gathering and Warhammer(my beloved)
It's not a competition
Ik Ik just sharing is all : /
lol feels like it, so many groups with only so many slots open, its like rushing for that last furby only to get blindsided by a woman with her purse she put a brick in to knock people out with so she can get the thing first
This channel is for newcomers so we try and keep things focused on that, including keeping things welcoming
Apologies I’ll move along to a different channel.
If something says “when you take the attack action” does that include spells or just melee, ranged and unarmed
Typically a spell would be the Cast a Spell action, even when that spell asks you to make an attack.
The Attack action is most commonly used for weapon attacks.
I have two players, both are human wizards. Their AC is not identical, why is that? Is it related to constitution or something?
can someone help me out; what are the ways to make light? I'm reading through a duet scenario with a view to DMing (my first ever!) for my son, but the scenario says they should have a way of making light, but I can't see it...
Light a torch or lantern cast a light spell/cantrip
the character sheet for the scenario doesn't seem to have any spells that give light, and they don't have a torch/lantern listed in their sheet...?
Do they have an adventures pack or something like that
diplomat's pack. is that defined in the rules in equipment then?
I'll check 🙂
a lamp! 🙂
thanks!
They may have different dexterity, which affects your AC when unarmored (10 + Dex modifier if Im not wrong)
Or one might be a race that gets AC, like lizardfolk who gain natural armor
Oh wait missed the human part, so ignore the lizardfolk thing lol
Click on the AC part of the sheet, it'll tell you how it's calculated.
☝️ If you’re using D&D Beyond, anyway.
Sup yall. Wanted to ask how is it determined if an attack roll is a hit? Is there a certain number threshold (ex. 14+ rolls hit)?
Generally attack rolls are made against the target's AC. So if a goblin has an armor class of 14, then you would need to roll at least a 14 (after bonuses and modifiers are added/subtracted to the roll) in order to hit.
To make an attack roll, roll a d20 and add the appropriate modifiers. If the total of the roll plus modifiers equals or exceeds the target's Armor Class (AC), the attack hits.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#AttackRolls
Hi, all. Could anyone point me to a good resource for D&D 3.5? Would appreciate any help.
#dnd-elder-editions can probably help you there.
Thank you.
Anyone played 'dragons of stormwreck isle', im wondering how to find 'Taraks treasure', what is it, how to give my player hints towards it and stuff like that?
From the Rogues questline
thank you very much
Ah thank you, that makes sense!
where do weapon attack modifiers come from?
I'm looking at a character sheet for running a game, and a human bard has a rapier and a dagger giving +4 attack but not sure why those are a thing from the rules?
can a wizard use melee weapons
Dex and proficiency
Wizards can use melee weapons, but they’re not proficient in many of them.
Assuming you have dex 14/15 this give you a +2 and another +2 from your proficiency
hang on, what's agility? do you mean dexterity?
Yeah, Dexterity affects your attack roll with certain weapons, including rapiers.
Sorry yes dex
ah okay. I'm only using the D&D Beyond basic rules right now to learn the game, I assume the full rules specify that?
No it’s in the basic rules
or I've missed it somewhere. and also, the character doesn't have proficiency in any weapons (but they're basic proficiency is +2). do they get proficiency on all melee attacks then?
Bards get prof in rapiers
oh!
maybe it just wasn't added to the proficiency section of the sheet then 🙂
thanks (you guys are SUPER helpful for noobs trying to learn!)
where do I find it? I went to the weapons section and found Rapiers in the section, but couldn't find anything about the Dex +2
oh is it 'Finesse'?
You got it!
aha Strength or Dexterity! thanks all!
and then that +4 is added to the attack roll and checked against the AC, but then it's added for damage as well, right?
Only the dex mod is added to the damage so +2
Is DND beyond a good place to read all the basic rules or do i need another official source
DND Beyond is an excellent source
This used to be the "D&D Beyond" discord server before it became the official D&D server though, so the responses to questions about it might be a little bit biased 🤣
But it is a tool that's officially owned by the D&D company, and the user interface is really easy to use, IMO

Hi! I'm new to DND, and i want to DM a game with some friends through roll20. The roblem is that i dont really want to create a whole adventure by myself, and i cant buy a premade template like lost mine of phandelvre, are there any free templates available?
honestly not too sure
i have the physical starter set with a lost mine book, but i can't play in person
You can use Roll20 to play virtually and just upload the maps from the Lost Mine of Phandelver adventure (again, it's free with all D&D Beyond accounts).
ok! so once i have the maps in roll20, i can just start playing?
If you've got the players and you know the rules, then yeah!
alr! ill just watch a guide on youtube to see how to use roll20. thanks!
don't hyou have to buy lost mines on roll20 is that free as well?
You can find community-created maps and upload them to Roll20. What other info is available on the platform is more for #third-party-tools-archive.
Roll20 itself is free, and you upload your own images/maps to it to use.
I thought you could purchase the unit from roll20, that's what I did
Lost Mines isn't free on Roll20 but it's free on D&D Beyond. You can just save the maps from the Lost Mines on D&D Beyond and upload them to Roll20.
oh ok
It takes more work if you manually upload the maps because you will need to set up the monster tokens, wall collision, and lighting. This is straying into #dm-discussion and/or #third-party-tools-archive territory.
I didn't know that
I would buy the unit on roll20 and everything works out of the box
If you purchase the adventures directly from Roll20, they set up the monster tokens, collision, and lighting for you already.
Yes.
ok, that makes sense
I thoguht maybe something had changed since I last used it
More integration with Roll20 or something
Helloooooo I am newwww

Need? No. Plenty are useful though! Good old fashioned DnD was played with paper and pencil in a kitchen with a beat up copy of a source book, after all
If you're playing in person you just need at minimum paper and pencils (for character sheets and to draw maps), dice, and the free Basic Rules.
Mkay, I don’t really have people to play with in person so
But I hope to
There are groups and stuff that can be played online right?
Yes, you can use a virtual tabletop like owlbear.rodeo, Roll20, or FoundryVTT.
hello :p
If you're interested in DMing then head on over to #dm-discussion for advice.
i have a question how do i view the looking for players channel? :p im a lil confused x)
The channels are listed in id:browse and id:customize
Man! I remember those days. We always had to play at the person’s house who had the biggest kitchen! I went through so many erasers! Lol
Okay so what is the milestone progression
The DM tells you when to level up.
XP progression tracks how much experience each enemy you defeat gives you. When you collect enough, based on your level, you level up!
Milestone progression is simply that you level up when your DM says you do, no XP tracking required.
Mkay
XP is the same as any video game. You gain experience points for defeating monsters and completing tasks, and then when you get enough points, you level up.
Milestone is more story based, and purely at the DM's own discretion. There is no bar to track or points awarded. Its simply a matter of "the DM decided now is a good time to level up, so we all level up." Typically Milestone levels will be awarded when you beat a boss, or complete a quest, or some big moment like that
What are feats, can you walk me through the whole character creating
Did you read the first four chapters of the Basic Rules?
Feats are special powers or abilities that any character can have, and they are gained at certain levels, instead of increasing your ability scores
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.

You add your Dex modifier to your amour class right even if it’s negative?
Yes
Yes.
That's correct!
The exception is if you are wearing heavy armour.
Unless your armor doesn't benefit from your Dexterity, such as heavy armor
Chain Mail, for example, sets your AC to 16. Your Dexterity won't bring that number up or down at all!
Heavy armor doesn't let you add your Dexterity modifier to your Armor Class, but it also doesn't penalize you if your Dexterity modifier is negative.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/equipment#HeavyArmor
Yup, my paladin's dump stat is Dex 😄
if I'm running a scenario someone else has created and using their stat blocks, does it matter that they have 'Skills: Perception +2' etc?
or will that, and the CR etc, already be taken into account, and I just need the 6 basic stat numbers/modifiers?
Are you referring to a monster statblock?
yeh sorry
not the character sheet, talking about running monsters. that wasn't at all clear from my message!
Each monster has the six ability scores, usually from 1 to 30, with the appropriate modifier. It also lists any ability skills they have such as Perception. The "Perception +2" would mean it would get a +2 to its d20 rolls Perception ability skill checks.
It's CR is listed as is. You don't need to adjust it.
Theoretically you shouldn't need to add anything to a monster's stat block: it comes fully ready to use
The CR affects its Proficiency Bonus (so don't adjust it unless you know what you're doing because it may affect its Proficiency Bonus, which in turn affects its attack rolls and skill checks listed in its statblock)
I have a quick question about making a character, is it fair to choose the class depending on the stats
yeh okay so for a Wisdom (Perception) check, it's the +0 from their Wisdom modifier, but then the +2 because they have Perception +2 🙂
The +2 would be from their Proficiency Bonus because they're proficient in the Perception skill.
yeh fine; I don't need to know right now exactly how it's calculated, just what I should do when I DM tomorrow! 🙂
The modifier for any skill is tied to a specific ability
The relevant ability, then if proficient, the proficiency bonus
Same as for players
Give an example? I’m not quite sure what you’re asking
suppose I'm making a sheet for a barbarian
but I see the beautiful -3 on strength, can I just choose to make him a bard instead or do I have to stick with my decision
most people allow you to allocate your stats
That’s the part that confused me…
I've never played an actual game, which I'm trying to fix
hello
Ok so if you want a barb, step one is to make damn sure your -3 doesn’t end up in the strength box 🤣
that's for sure

what does that mean tho
you get to choose where your 6 numbers go in your stats
But using your example, you absolutely could choose the class based on your stats. And that’s fun. The answer to your original question is “yes”
It means you roll to generate six numbers
Then u assign those numbers to whichever stats you want
You dont HAVE to make the first number you roll for STR
thanks :D
thank you
It can be fun if that is the specified type of game and situation the group is aiming for
I am confusing myself on how to calculate HP I understand it’s a hit point die plus your con mod. But do just I roll the hit dice then just add the cont mod. I got confused because it says your highest roll so I wasn’t sure if you should roll it more than once
A friend of mine is toying with this. You roll what you roll. And you already know what your class is. So the adventures are heavily about character development. It’s an interesting concept
for level 1 you use the max of your hit dice +con after that you generally roll
So you don’t roll at all the first level? Then for the levels after roll?
is thay why paladins and barbarians tend to have more HP?
correct you use the highest for the first
and cause they usually enjoy high con stats
though everyone enjoys good con
that's why i was thinking
You can choose to take the average on 2nd+ level or roll. So you might see with paladin they have D10 (6), where 6 is the 'average' and d10 is the dice you can roll. So second level paladin rolls a d10 or takes the 6 and adds their con mod (let's say +3) and gets lets say 9. They add that to their current health (13) and now have 21 hp. Then repeat each level.
I’m a big fan of in person. If you don’t have friends that play, look around local game stores. If there isn’t one around, there are threads on here to find various games
Just wanna make sure I get this right lol. So at level one a barb has like a 1d12 I think then I add the cont modifier so 12+ Cont mod. But when I reach level two I roll then 1d12 add the cont modifier again then add that to my overall hp? Thank you
yes correct but you may also choose to use the fixed method
adding the proficiency bonus?
which means at level 2+ you take the average of the dice which is 7 for a d12
you do not add the profiency bonus to your hit dice
If you are brave at all, have friends that may be willing, you could always take the plunge and become dm. Welcome to your new addiction.
Thank you
gotcha
That’s what I’m trying to do
HP is a function of CON and hit dice size
I am brave but the problem is the second part of your statement, thanks for the tip tho
hey hey brand new player here any tips and help i can use before i start my dnd journey

How do I dnd made a character with dragonborn thought is was Skyrim but no XD
alright time to read even tho i hate reading
Reading is fundamental
D&D is a game of rules. You can't ignore reading if you want to play the game.
Meanwhile my dialectic ars
Howdy
welp i read some and i think i can understand the rest as i go on
I had a question on something, might be a stupid question, but when an attack lists for example 4 (1d8) as damage, how do I interpret this? 4 damage + whatever the die roll is?
Or divided?
4 is the average damage of 1d8 if you’d prefer not to roll, though that’s typically for monsters and NPCs.
ohhh
Hellooo
Thank you, I'm a dummy
How's everyone doing today
Good man, you?
Good enough
I'm quite new to DND, getting a great liking for it, no idea how to start it tho

ok thanks, will give it a try.
Hello! Baldur's gate 3 has been my first introduction to the world of dnd and the 5e ruleset. Lately some of my friends have wanted me to go and play real tabletop dnd but I don't even know what "starter kit" or things I should get to start. I heard there is a new ruleset coming out, so is buying the 5e rulebook not a good idea rn? Thanks in advance.

So when your level one you have a +2 proficiency bonus right? So when you level up eventually all the skills your proficient in get a increased modifier right? Because the proficiency bonus goes up?
Correct, as well as from you increasing the relevant ability score if you do so with ASI’s or thanks to items that increase a score
To clarify: the revised core rulebooks next year are not a new ruleset. They’re still fifth edition and will work with any fifth edition books you buy today.
For weapons do you add the proficiency bonus at all or is it only for rolling for hit?
It increases like every four levels, but yeah.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#CharacterAdvancement
You add it to the attack roll, but not the damage roll.
Hi guys I do not know how to play dnd but I have wanted to play it for ages. Only want to start now because at my school there is a club for dnd that I want to take part of… can any one teach me and help me play this game?
please?
I’ve just been reading the basic rules so far to learn it’s going pretty well and asking questions when I need too
Welcome! There's some handy links up above to help you get started: #dnd-newcomers message
But if you've got any specific questions, you're in the right place!
I’m worried learning what type of roll to do for what action will be confusing though
generally most actions are resolved with starting with a D20. Then the relevant ability will tell you what to roll based on success or failure.
Do you have a specific example?
Like should it be strength check, a perception check, nature check worried I’ll get confused there or like I’ll get confused on what type of saving throw needs to be done
Most of the time a saving throw happens because another rule says it does.
So you just do what it says.
Ability checks can happen any time a player wants to attempt something, and you want use the dice to determine whether they succeed.
Oftentimes you (the DM) will just be choosing whichever you think is most appropriate for that.
(If you're not the DM, you'll just roll whatever they tell you to instead.)
Yeah I’m trying to learn how to be the DM atm all my friends are new and I’m the only one willing to learn I was going to try out the lost mines module
If they're attempting a physical task: STR, DEX, or CON.
If they're attempting a mental task: INT, WIS, or CON CHA.
Each of those has one or more skills that might apply, like Strength (Athletics) or Wisdom (Perception).
But it's fine to just ask for a regular Strength or Wisdom check instead.
(If a player asks whether their skill proficiency can apply and gives you a good argument for it, I'd let them.)
did you mean con for mental?
Thanks 😅
Anyway, this section covers what each ability and skill are used for, and you can always pause the game to consult it if you need.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/using-ability-scores#UsingEachAbility
If your group knows you're all learning together, it shouldn't be a problem.
And if you get it wrong or need to make up a rule to keep the game going, that's fine, too.
As long as everyone's having fun, you're doing it right.
i mean con is concentration saves so does that mean it has some mental relation?
Will there be situations where they have to use a certain skill for a task and can’t use anything else like a str check?
Just created my first character in 20 years, never played much but I'm looking forward to playing
If a player can give you a good argument for why another kind of check might do the trick, it's totally fine to say yes.
That means they're thinking, they're invested. Reward it.
Thank you!
For example, if your players need to convince a warrior king to aid them, that would typically be a persuasion check.
But if a player wants to try a deception check to trick him, or an intimidation check to coerce him, or a strength check to impress him... why not?
You can set the DC higher or lower if they change to a tactic that might be easier or harder.
This warrior king may be hard to intimidate, for example, so the DC might go up.
Or in a surprise twist, he might appreciate a forceful ally, so maybe the DC for that is easier.
hey guys im new to this channel and i would like to know if there is any specific place is should go to maybe set a session with some people. ive never played a game my self but i love dnd channels and games like baulders gate and i would love to be in my own campain
@regal sail hi boy, #find-a-game here's a good place to start looking
I'm one of those BG3 converts that's interested in doing D&D "for reals" now after hearing about it and reading about it for a long time. I'm interested to hear about how y'all prepare for a game if you're not the DM. To make it a more specific question, something like:
If you only had an hour to get ready for a D&D game as a player (and you've already made a character), what lore or mechanics, if any, do you prioritize reading?
Obv this changes from person to person, and level to level of experience, but for me there is so much lore / stuff that I can't possibly read all of it. I'm interested in seeing what people think is "most important" to them.
lol another convert. Same boat as you XD
Lore is the least important, your DM will show you the world he uses when the game starts
You absolutely need to start with the rules; building your character (mechanically) will be part of the process
Your characters backstory does not need to be deep or long, which is probably where new players trip up the most. All you really need is a reason to go adventure, and a rough idea of personality

I would further suggest mentally setting aside any BG3 rules as they are not the same
Nice; I wasn't sure how much "lore" knowledge was expected of the player. Little to None was required when I played with some people recently, but I'm not sure if that's standard.
Lore is dependent on your DM's campaign setting. If it's a homebrew world then your DM will have to explain what's in it, such as the deities.
you dont need any lore, even if the DM is using pre-existing worlds, you will learn it in game
For the last one, they were just like, "It's in the Forgotten Realms, and pretty much just 5e." Haha, there was some homebrew for that, but the DM did explain it at the start.
Well, that's what I was worried about --- learning this stuff "in game" is kind of tricky, since there's stuff the character would know, just living there, but that I don't know. I didn't want to be frustrating and ask a million questions like, "What's a XYZ?" for all the stuff. That hasn't happened, but I wasn't sure if there was a general expectation.
Its a role playing game
Your knowledge as a player is not and should not be your knowledge as a character
Right, but if I am playing the character, I should at least know what the character should know to make choices that would affect the character, no?
Your character’s backstory can be as deep and detailed as you (and your DM) want
Im saying as a new player, you absolutely should not be wasting your time combing through dnd books for lore when , again i say each DM will have their own world, and you will learn it from them
That makes sense, thank you, that's exactly what I was after.
you can walk in as a complete slate and be fine, it is more important you know your character sheet with its stats and abilities, and have an idea of a general personality how you want to act
Okay, perfect. I wasn't sure if there was a faux pas if you didn't read, you know, every god in a certain town or whatever. It sounds dumb to experienced people, but I literally have no idea, ha.
Thank you; as always, I'll communicate with the DM for specifics, but this is nice to know that I can just jump right in.
If someone does like a deception check or something like that what determines the number they have to beat for it to work? Just a D20 roll?
If it's against a NPC/monster than the DM determines the DC (possibly an opposing Insight check).
So does the dm roll then if you beat there roll is that a success
The DM may have a DC value set depending on what you're trying to do.
PC: "I want to sweet talk the king to give me his crown."
DM: "Don't bother rolling because that's not going to happen."
PC (dressed in a guard uniform he stole from an unconscious drunk guard): "I want to pretend to be town guard as I walk up to the gate."
DM think it's a DC 12.
If it's a casual conversation with a NPC, the DM may use the NPC's passive Insight check.
It's on the DM to decide.
I notice there are 3 senses how often do they get used?
What are you referring to?
Passive int
Passive wis perception and insight
Passive Insight
Passive Investigation
Passive Perception
You the player don't use those. The DM does.
The DM uses those when they don't want you to roll, such as some monsters hiding in the bush. Obviously asking the PCs to suddenly roll a Perception check in the middle of the forest will make the players suspect something is there if they fail their Perception check rolls.
Any tips for a new DM? I'm having trouble with players who don't seem to want to engage with the game, vis-a-vis roleplaying and just want to goof around and derail stuff.
Head on over to #dm-discussion for advice.
Thx, will do
If there’s something like goblins hiding in the bushes how does the DM determine DC for the hiding goblins? And if there passive perception let’s them see the goblins?
You can do a Stealth (dexterity) roll for the goblins and contrast that to the PP or perception check of hte players.
what is this channel for, asking questions?

oh ok thanks
so when starting dnd in a dms story do i create a character specifically for their story or just have some made?
You create one that fits in their campaign setting.
okok gotcha just wanna make sure
If their world has no elves and you create an elf character then there's an issue...
but then you could come up with a story that the God of elves transported that elf to that world from a different world
Sure but that's the DM's perogative to allow that or not.
If the DM says no then it's no.
no I meant that if your character was an elf and you joined a campaign with no elf than your dm could come up with that story
It's still the DM's fiat.
Hey, recently in a campaign my character has become temporarily NE alignment. How am I supposed to play this character now? (They were previously CG) am I just to be selfish but still follow the party goals?
temporarily?
Ye it's due to a curse
Maybe ask in #character-discussion - this channel is more for helping new to D&D folks figure out the core mechanics and rules.
OK thanks
oh that makes sense
Can I join a game
How does one take DM Notes
Um…paper and pen, laptop, whatever works for you ?
I was recommended using Obsidian notes for note-taking
Sorry wasn't clear about that - I mean how to take notes as a DM
Same thing
So is it like a guideline for you? Keeping track of what to plan??
It can be whatever you want it to be, guidelines with tables to roll for encounters are common, maybe some loot tables and the such. Depends on how much you like filling in the gaps on the spot.
A virtual DM Screen and some campaign notes are a good starting spot, some location names and NPC names on your notes, statblocks and common rules on your DM Screen.
Ah
Got done listening to Season 1 of Dungeons and Daddies. I wanted to just try it amongst friends and give it a go
Nice, hoping it all goes well for you and your group.
Thanks
tbh I have no idea how dnd works I just have a big imagination and it sounded fun 😭😭
Same Taylor
But it's good to ask questions and such
I’ll prolly watch some videos on yt then ask questions
Fair
I'm trying to base my campaign off the Mobile game I used to Play Iruna Online
There's a timeline I like where the 12 Gods of Iruna failed to control the chaos that swarm amongst them and over run by a race that took control of their powers and you as the adventurer have to save Iruna
oh that sounds fun
idk what a campaign is or whatever but it sounds like you make up a story, and if that’s true I’ll probably do my book plot.
Campaign is just the setting of the game
ohh
Can I join the game
so like can u make the setting a book u read or sum? cuz I read this fantasy book shadow and bone and I liked the worldbuilding
It's whatever you want it to be I believed
^
alr
I would love a Destiny Campaign xD
as for explaining a campaign, imagine lord of the rings was a campaign. They started in the shire, had some spooky stuff happen, plot begins, and then they went out on their quest, found more characters, eventually more plot happened and threw complications in the mix
So like writing a book right? And each session is like a chapter in that book
That would be a way to conceptualize it yes
A campaign is the setting/framework for the game sessions
ok so I know ppl like play sessions irl and stuff, but how would it work if u want to play online with other ppl
Check out this post: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/750-new-players-guide-how-to-play-d-d-online
alright ty
All you need is the standard things in D&D and then a tool to communicate. Many folks use Discord. Some groups even use a Virtual Table Top (VTT) to have maps and tokens.
Basically, a DM wants to write down what's there, who is there, how they act, and so on. Then the characters interact with that stuff as they do, and the DM has the world react to the characters, and the characters react to the world.
You can't really script DND, but when you look back on what's happened, you can now view that as a script once it's happened.
what is the easiest class for a beginner
probably fighter or barbarian for non spellcasting, cleric or wizard for spellcasting
alr thanks ill check it out
wizard is more so straightforward and makes sense but is complicated. fighter is the same way in the sense, and cleric and barbarian are easier to wrap your head around but you can just do more with what is there in store
no class is too hard for a beginner, play what you'd like. but those 4 are the simplist
I forgot already what’s a good subclass for a first time player who is playing a monk
I'd like to think Kensei, because One with the Blade makes your attacks magical with weapons, as well as letting weapons be good for Monks without optional rules from Tasha's
A wizard is the last class to recommend to a new player
how do i start playing ??
I mean a wizard was my 2nd character ever. But others have a different brain than me ig
find a local dm
Check this link, #find-a-game to find a game, if you plan to play online, that is
ok
If a character is using a dex weapon do they add the dex modifier to it?
wdym dex weapon?
I didn’t even think about Kensei because Ascendant Dragon has a much cooler name 😭
I’ll def check it out though
Yes, finesse weapons use roll+(Dex or Str mod)+PB
Aaah so it’s either a str or a finesse weapon where you can use dex or str?
I do believe so, I could be wrong though, maybe some weapons use only dex mod
Ranged weapons typically only use DEX
Right, that makes sense
do spells use dexterity or strength
they use your spellcasting ability
like dices?
Spell casting modifier, Clerics use Wisdom, Wizards and Artificer use Intelligence, Sorcerers and Warlocks use Charisma, etc
Does the finesse thing apply to both attack and dmg rolls?
only attack
Damage rolls add mod for whatever mod you use with attack rolls, I forgot about PB though
pb?
Proficiency Bonus
oh yeah
So if I do an attack roll with dex it would add the dex mod to dmg
Yeah, I do believe so
That is correct - if you are proficient with a weapon (or a class of weapons), you add your proficiency bonus to the attack rolls - see https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#AttackRolls
and as far as damage see https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#DamageRolls

Hello
I've never played dnd before and wanna learn some stuff before I play my first ever game. Can yall give me advice?
Read through at least the free basic rules to have an understanding of the terminology and where to look things up.
Understand how a character sheet works and how your particular character works.
Focus on having fun with everyone at the table.

Thx
spell attack rolls and spell save dcs are based on your spellcasting ability
what gaming set should I use
Can you clarify?
Howdy people
nvm I’m good, but uh where do I join campaigns

So I just found out I can prepare and unprepare spells, but can I learn and unlearn cantrips?
Is that just an "ask your dm" thing
Versatility with those specific classes if you have optional rules from Tasha's
Cantrips arent prepared daily and cannot be changed
In Tasha’s some classes gained the abilility to change the cantrips at certain levels
Alr, sad I didn't take sacred flame lol
Also keep in mind that preparing spells is limited to specific caster classes
kk
I’m just making my way through the basic rules is understanding spells hard I mean I haven’t got there yet but I was curious
Not super hard
Feel free to ask any specific clarification questions though
In my time learning what do you guys think will be the hardest part?
Learning how to improv, the rest is just reading and remembering
It's difficult to say, some people get confused on how cantrips scale, some get confused on spell slots, some on how players and monsters work differently, or they might just understand it but be confused about something else
The free Basic Rules have much (but not all) of the PHB's content, but if you know you wanna drop money on the game, you'll need the Player's Handbook whether you're a DM or a player. The MM and DMG are definitely handy if you're running things.
You'll likely get more opinions on campaigns in#dm-discussion.
Chat happens when there's a topic about. "Lulls happen as folks have other things happening besides discussing things on the server - this is natural."
Ok
Say you have something that makes your nat 20 a 19 do you still get the nat 20 benefits?
I’m assuming you’re referring to the champion fighter feature that allows crits on a 19 or 20
You get the benefits of a Nat 20 on either number
If the modifiers add up to 20 and it’s not like a 19 or 20 you don’t get the benefits right?
The term “nat 20” means rollin an actual 20 on the dice
Rolling a different number with modifiers or other bonuses that add up to 20 is commonly referred to as a “dirty 20”
The difference is that a natural 20 has certain benefits
A “dirty 20” is just that value
Normally, a 20 on the d20 for an attack roll is a Critical Hit.
The Champion says a roll of 19 or 20 on the d20 is a Critical Hit, and later, 18, 19, and 20 on the d20.
That doesn't make them count for being a 20 on the d20 - it only makes it count as a critical hit.
For example, a Vorpal Sword needs exactly a 20, it doesn't care about a critical hit. Even if you score critical hits on a roll of 19, the Vorpal Sword's special property needs a 20 on the d20.
Oh, does that still exist in 5e?
what does?
Vorpal
I used to play a lot of 3 and 3.5 but recently I have gotten interested again
Most of the classic magic items from AD&D are in 5E.
i got a question on saving throw proficiency
to my knowledge your starting class gives u proficiency in 2 saves and thats it
but somewhere i heard like : warlocks should multi class into sorscerer for the extra con save but idk
can someone clear the raw rules ?
Hi guys, question here. Gonna DM a scenario as a duet where there’s 1 player, and 2 enemies show up and the scenario says to roll for each enemy to see if the PC is surprised.
If they fail one but pass the other, they are surprised, but I think by the rules that means both the enemies get a round of attack before the PC? Is that right?
Because thematically it seems to make more sense that only the enemy they fail against gets that?
You don't get saving throw proficiencies from multiclassing alas. You get the saving throws from your first class only.
There is a table listing all the proficiencies you actually get from a new class when multiclassing here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/customization-options#Proficiencies
So for surprise and stealth, the ambushers roll sneak vs the targets passive perception.
If a target hears even one of the ambushers, they are not surprised. However the ambushers they failed to spot still have advantage to attacks from being unseen.
If surprised the target essentially skips the first turn of their combat.
The GM determines who might be surprised. If neither side tries to be stealthy, they automatically notice each other. Otherwise, the GM compares the Dexterity (Stealth) checks of anyone hiding with the passive Wisdom (Perception) score of each creature on the opposing side. Any character or monster that doesn't notice a threat is surprised at the start of the encounter.
If you're surprised, you can't move or take an action on your first turn of the combat, and you can't take a reaction until that turn ends. A member of a group can be surprised even if the other members aren't.
Surprise is only ever tested for at the start of a combat- stealth mid combat now only gains advantage from being an unseen attacker.
Where do you put rage count?
Apologies if I'm asking this in the wrong chat, but if a particular race gives me a cantrip and then I choose Warlock as my class, does that mean I get three cantrips all up, or do I have to pick two cantrips out of the three available? (Sorry if that doesn't make sense)
You have two cantrips from warlock, and one seperate cantrip from your race
So three
Cool. Thanks 🙂
I am a nuclear looking for a game
The character sheets don’t have a place to track it, so just use a piece of paper or just remember it
New
Look in #find-a-game
Ohhh I see. Thanks!
I'm having so much fun learning how this game works 🙂
Have you read the basic rules?
Thank you I really do appreciate it
No, this is absolutely my first step
I just saw a YouTube video I just need to figure out what do I need to buy?
You don’t need to buy anything to start with
Basic rules is fantastic-- and you can access them at the DnD Beyond website for free
OK all I found out from the video is don’t be a edge lord
Have a look at the free basic rules linked in the pinned messages

Are rogues getting thieves tool proficiency always or only when the backround give thieves tool proficiency?
Rogues always get thieves tools as part of their class profs
Armor: light armor
Weapons: simple weapons, hand crossbows, longswords, rapiers, shortswords
Tools: thieves' tools
Saving Throws: Dexterity, Intelligence
Skills: Choose four from Acrobatics, Athletics, Deception, Insight, Intimidation, Investigation, Perception, Performance. Persuasion, Sleight of Hand, and Stealth
So when my backround give thieves tool proficiency i should change that because proficiency cant stack or can they?
They can't stack, and if a background would give the same proficiency given by class or race, you can change the background's proficiency. Backgrounds can be customised but always give 2 skill profs and 2 tool/language profs.
Ok thanks
yeah you would chose a different tool for your background in this case
How does non magic healing work like from resting
have you read this part of the basic rules? https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/adventuring#Resting
So a Warlock at level 5 could roll 5d8s and add those numbers back to your hp and you add your con mod with every roll? Or you can take the average number?
you can roll your hit dice one at a time until you feel like you have regained enough HP. You add your CON mod to every die, correct.
average is only for level up, not for healing with hit dice
They always have to keep the 8 tho right from the first level
Max HP is different to regained health.
So a Warlocks Max HP is determined on level up, and first level the dice is always maxed (8).
But for resting, there is no 'first level HD'. You just have as many HD as you do levels and can spend them to heal on short rests.
first level HP is maxed, so for a Warlock its 8+CON
this doesnt affect hit dice for healing
Do you always add the con mod when leveling up and getting ur new hp maximum
Or just for the first level
Con mod is always added on on level up and on using hit dice during a short rest.
woah longest dnd campaign lasted for 41 years
what version of the game are they playing
Per the wikipedia article they use AD&D 1st Edition rules.
zamn
But this is not really the right place for this discussion - this channel is more for answering new to D&D folks questions about core mechanics and rules to help get them started with the game.
Quick Question: Which book came out first, Xanathar's Guide to Everything, or Tasha's Cauldron of Everything?
Xanathars came first
undefined. Its up to the DM to decide. I personally would say a longsword is small while a shortsword still counts as tiny
If it’s reduced to 0 hp and the remaining damage equals or exceeds its maximum hit points.
So if someone with 5 out of 10 hp takes 15 damage or more, for example.
The same is true if they’re already at 0 hp and take damage (from a single source) equal to or greater than their hit point maximum.
Hi, I am a beginner D&D player that played his first D&D Game a week ago, I live in Israel and I am wondering if there are any online D&D Groups I can Join.
Thanks --REDACTED--.
I am explicitly not looking to start a new D&D Group. I am looking to find one.
no thats where you join groups
ahh, Okay
(That’s where DMs post openings for groups)
Yo this is my first time ever getting into d&d beyond, or just d&d in general. Is there a group I can join?
See #find-a-game.
hello
Hey there!
how do i know if a game in #looking-for-players is newbie friendly or not?
If it’s not explicitly advertised as such, you can simply ask in the thread.
got it thanks
What's the best way to get started?
I've played D&D back in the day (when you had to buy the coloured boxes as you levelled up) & more recently have played some Baldur's Gate.
Means I'm used to playing solo & at my pace
I guess maybe clarify what you mean by get started. Do you want to play the game solo some more? Do you want to run the game? Do you want to find a group to play with?
heyo, could someone help me with a making a character sheet? I would ask my group members(dm is busy) but I want to keep my character secret from them.
this is my second time making one and the first one was 2 years ago
Just wanted to say thanks to those who helped with my questions yesterday; DMed half a scenario for my son today and he loved it!
is monk a beginner friendly class?
Hello I'm new to all this I've always wanted to play but could never find a group how does playing online work
This article covers some of the methods used for playing online: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/750-new-players-guide-how-to-play-d-d-online
One of my players chose monk as his first long-term D&D class, and it’s been a pretty smooth ride so far.
i think i wanna go for monk for my first character, but worried cause its such a front lines character
The other martials (fighter, rogue, barbarian) generally have even fewer mechanics than the monk, so they’re also relatively easy to learn. Fighter and rogue in particular can work well at range. Not so much barb.
It's pretty easy just takes time setting up schedules
hello everyone just joined

That's awesome glad you had fun
Anyone good at making characters?
Thanks!
Have you seen the #character-discussion channel?
Making my first character in 10 years today just for funsies because I miss this game so much. I’m glad to see it’s thriving and hopefully I can find a game to jump into.
Howdy. I've always wanted to get into DND and somewhat studied it, but I've never played. I would like to play something similar to Critical Role (where in my opinion, it seems like a lot of good and well-thought role-play with smart writers and good voice actors, and they have good fun and chuckles) for when I'm the player. Overall, I do feel like I would be more of a Game Master (or Dungeon Master) and host my own games. I'm a writer who enjoys world-building and character development, so I feel like it would be better for me. I'm open for both, honestly. I try to study more about DND, playing and hosting every day.

will do!! i’m not very good at reading so i’ll head over to the youtube channel
Thank you!
Reading is fun.
D&D is a game of rules. You can't avoiding reading if you want to play D&D.
Hii people
That said, as a player (and not the DM) you just have to know enough about the rules affecting your character (class, combat, skills, and possibly spells).
I haven’t played dnd before and wanna try it out

Okk thxs
That wasn't a question but a command for the bot.
Oh
Hey guys so I've been meaning to get into dnd and I'd like to know what starter kit should I buy and on what discord server can I play
If you only want to remain as a player not as a Dungeon Master (DM) perhaps don't bother with the Starter Set. The free Basic Rules is everything you'll need to get started.
are ki points essentially just spell slots?
no. They are used for a lot of different (non spells) things and come back on a short rest.
they do replace spell slots for monks who can cast spells but thats specific to subclasses
@reef palm to move here and continue answering the question, when you make an attack with the weapon, you roll the associated damage die listed for the weapon and add the same modifier you used to make the attack to the damage
In your specific case of being the rapier, normally making a melee attack would use strength for the attack and damage but as I said in the other channel, that particular weapon has a weapon property called finesse that allows you to use your dexterity instead. Another weapon, like the longsword, that does not have that property would have to be a strength-based attack.
I understand
To be clear, you only roll the damage die if the attack hit the target. You don't bother rolling damage until you know that.
I'm not quite a newcomer, just combat can be confusing
Ah, fair.
Well then to potentially cut off one other avenue of confusion I have seen come up before: unlike weapons, spells do not add the relevant modifier to their damage unless they specify they do. So unlike using a rapier and adding your dexterity modifier to whatever damage you roll, when you attack with a fire bolt, it is only the 1d10 fire damage.
hey, did dndbeyond just crash for everyone else too?
Yes, it's slow.
ah, fantastic
I understand

now I have combat down
also making sure ranged attacks are at a disadvantage when youre right next to an enemy right
If you fire a range weapon next to an enemy next to you (5' away).
If there is a hostile enemy that is not incapacitated within 5 ft of you, yes you will have disadvantage on any ranged attack you make at any target, not just that one.
But also don't necessarily worry about memorizing all the rules - at the end of the day this is a game and the point of a game is to have fun. The rules help everyone have a shared understanding of how things should work, but focus on fun, use the game mechanics to help with that, but don't feel beholden to them if it gets in the way of everyone at the table having fun.
A good DM should help you by reminding you the rules of combat.
I have a question about race traits, online I read you only take 2, but i think dnd beyond implies you get all race traits. Which one is it?
What are you referring to specifically?
for example, for the dwarf race: do i take all darkvision, dwarven resilience, and all the other traits?
Or do I only take 2?
You get whatever the base racial traits has.
But then you get additonal ones base on the sub-race (if there are any), such as hill and mountain dwarves.
i see, thank you for clarifying
You don't choose what they are unless it specifically says so, such as ability skills (usually from a list).

Hello, I am new to DnD and have no idea where to start, would any of you be so kind as to give me a few tips? All help will be much appreciated.
Read the links above.
Thank you very much!
@rancid root books, movies, and some online actual play will help inspire you and also broaden your D&D jargon and vocabulary. Lots of acronyms, abbreviations, and slang are slung about. Most of us assume that most people know what all the language and culture is about.
Can the storm wreck isle campaign be done with 1 dm 1 player reasonably
The book itself says this:
You can run Dragons of Stormwreck Isle for one to five players. If you have four or five friends ready to play with you, each person can take one of the characters provided above. Five players will find the encounters a little easier than four players will, but the adventure works fine as written for groups of four or five players.
If you have fewer than four players, you can have some players take on the role of two characters so the group has at least four characters. A player with two characters should treat one of them as their main character and the other as a sidekick, there to help out but probably not engaging in a lot of dialogue.
I want to DM a one shot with a few of my friends, I haven't DM'd ever and my friends are new as well, any suggestions on where to start and any basic One Shot templates I could use or are recommended?
Maybe check with fellow DMs in #dm-discussion
Help. Please. Someone who knows how to do the basic shit please dm or message me.
Did you read the Basic Rules yet?
Yes. I have the book in front of me. And it's not helping with the one specific thing I need help with.
what exactly do you mean by basic shit?
Ask your question here then. That's what this channel is for.
Fair fair. The book, nor any online resources tells me how to roll stats and then upgrade to third level. The guy that was gonna help me in person got called in to work right when we got started. The campaign is tomorrow and I'm so lost.
He just kinda dumped two books on me and told me to figure it out lol.
rolling stats: you roll 4 six sided dice and take the biggest three
add those three numbers together
for instance
Everything you need to know is in the free Basic Rules.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#3DetermineAbilityScores
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#Beyond1stLevel
or just roll d20...
You're not helping but making things worse.
add those together
Okay. What about upgrading to 3rd level?
Lol
actually whenever I play my dm told me to roll d20 for stats
at third level for most classes you'll get a sublcass if you haven't already
So... Im just traumatized
We will be getting one. I'm going full cleric in war domain.
^
I didnt mean to get you in mistake
No I thought it was funny lol.
at 4th level you get an ability score improvement
Okay thanks.
It's a short campaign that will end before 4th just to see if I mesh with the group.
oh alright cool
Thank you.
It left me more confused. It doesn't tell me how to or even if I increase a stat.
Any shot you wouldn't mind getting into a call and helping me out? Shouldn't take long once I know what I'm doing.
unfortunately I'm about to leave and I don't think I'd be very helpful... sorry 😅
No it's fine. Thanks anyways.
ASI is class based. As mentioned earlier, your first ASI is at level 4.
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hD-LWHhiseE&list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN&index=1
After you have rolled for six ability scores, you assign eacv numbers to an ability
Then pick your race and your class
Each race has a bonus to add to your score
Each class has opportunities to increase your ability scores at certain levels. These are called ASIs. Each class has a chart that will tell you when they gain ASIs
Each class has a table that describes what, if any new features you gain at each level
It seems like you have not determined your scores, race, and class yet, which is probably why you are not confused about how to level up
I’m new to dnd any way I can play in a group that accept newcomers
And also that plays online because I’m from another country probs
Thanks for this advice. I did just that. I settled on gray orc as I'm playing cleric. And it's stat boosts are helpful there. Thanks to you and @cobalt frigate I figured it out. Thanks to you both.
Not every game that’s friendly to new players advertises as such. You can always ask the person who posted the ad.
You can respond to ads in #looking-for-players or put an ad yourself in #750812887697588356 after following the instructions in #find-a-game.
I was reading the basic rules and was wondering does weight and hight play a big roll in dnd?
Weight is important if your DM uses encumbrance rules (aka how much you can carry). I’m not sure I’ve ever seen PC height matter in a game, if that’s what you mean.
Also in the rules it goes over languages what’s the difference between language and script?
Some languages have specialized scripts, but I’ve never seen a DM make an important distinction, though I suppose there could be an instance where you recognize the script but not the language. Seems like an edge case, though. I don’t memorize what language is tied to what script. That’s too granular for me, so it really depends on the DM’s style.
As a bard, do I need the 2 "lodestone" to cast the cantrip "mending?" Or does he have something like component pouch/arcane focus that "creates" those negligible materials?
Usually material components without a cost are handled by a component pouch or a spellcasting focus. Bards can use an instrument as a spellcasting focus, which eliminates the need to provide material components without an associated gold value (as described in the spell description).
ohhh, I didn't know the requirement to negelct costless components was a spellcasting focus, thank you so much
unless a spell component has a cost and/or is consumed by the spell, you can use a focus or component pouch in place of those materials 🙂
Yeah, material components come in two rulings
1: It says it must be worth at least X money, or it says it's consumed by the spell, or both. You can't replace this with a focus, you need the material component specified.
2: It doesn't say either of the above, like "a piece of wool." In that case, you can replace it with a focus as appropriate for your class.
So me and a group of friends are playing DnD together for the first time is a bond optional? Or do they need one?
Also what does inspiration exactly do? Is it up to the DM to decide? Like how does it benefit the players?
the four different personality trait categories aren't exhaustive but they can help set something up at least. Feel free to make your own character personality, make your own traits. It's your character, they act as you write them, but all you need to consider is making it fit into the game. So you don't have someone with no flaws, for example.
As written, Inspiration is for a DM to reward a player with if they do something particularly clever or stick to the roleplay of their character.
A player can spend that inspiration to get advantage on an ability check, attack roll, or saving throw.
.
There's a lot of ways that can happen, so I can't tell you a step by step but I can say how I ended up running my game online
Alright thank you
In my case, I set up a discord server for my DND game, and advertised in this very server a few years ago. Some people were interested and asked about, I invited, eventually had a few filter out (had like a dozen or more, some filtered out due to scheduling conflicts, some just dropped out), and now I'm sitting on a party of 6 players in our second campaign.
I use my discord server for channels and voice chat, and I use Owlbear Rodeo as a simple workable virtual tabletop for the combat. I can also use owlbear rodeo for the map of the world I'm running the game in, for example.
The more important part is prep time with the players.
Prepare bits and pieces of where you're going to start, but I found I was able to prepare better when I had the player backstories to tinker the world with.
So like
Do I buy a d&d thing on the website
And put it into that software?
After I have people
not quite like that
DNDBeyond is a digital toolset, so you can read the books and use the character builder or encounter builder with the things you have access to
Owlbear Rodeo is a separate thing. It's just tokens on a board essentially. I use it for combats as, if I want to have a battle map, I'd need a virtual table top since my group is online.
The basic rules are free, however.
Don't you need a story thing?
Yeah. Lost Mine of Phandelver is free on DNDBeyond though, so you can run that.
There are books and other materials that provide pre-written adventures, or pre-written settings that are tools DMs can use to help run a campaign
You can also write everything yourself, its just time and effort
As a DM you'll have at least these two major things. The world, and what's going on in the world.
so, as a DM, you simply have the world and people in it react to the player's actions, and let the player react to the world.
Some campaigns use official settings
Some make their own
I'd assume official would be easier
To the extent there is existing material and tools to draw on, yes
There are tons of books or guides from third party publishers, of varying quality and depth.
As you can imagine, a popular game has a large marketplate for people to participate in
Some conpanies make expansive sets that include books, maps, reference materials, minis, etc
Some just make parts of it
If you can imagine it, it probably exists
I'm sorry if I'm asking for a lot but could I have a step by step kinda thing on setting it up
You should review the basic rules yourself to learn how to play
Them visit #dm-discussion for help on running a campaign
Okay thanks
should i keep track of weight of the items? I see some starter items include a backpack, is there a limited amount of items/weight someone can hold?
its up to your dm if they use weight rules
I see, thank you
by default you can carry 15 x strength score
so with 20 strength you could carry 300 pounds
So, is warlock a difficult class to start experiencing dnd with?
I've been playing for going on three years and still haven't tried warlock. The invocations give a lot of options for customizing, but I get intimidated by choices that stick like that.
So I have been wanting to play this game for YEARS and today is the day I muster up the balls to play it,
Here is to hoping I get to play soon
I'm having trouble understanding how disengage and opportunity attack works. Do my players need to declare disengage before avoiding the opportunity attack? Or is there something I'm missing?
You use Disengage before moving to avoid any opportunity attacks.
If you move away from a hostile creature, you risk getting hit by an opportunity attack. Taking the Disengage action lets you move without that risk.
Two different things:
Opportunity attack rule is that an enemy may use its reaction to make a melee attack on you if you are next to it and leave its range
Disengage is an Action, like Attack, Cast a Spell, Dodge, etc. you need to announce you are doing it. When you disengage, the enemy does not get an opportunity attack. The tradeoff is you have used your Action
Certain classes specifically get a feature to use Disengage as a bonus action
Certain races, too.
For a new dm what's better having a physical starter set campaign like storm wreck isle or dnd beyond version. What exactly is the difference gameplay and interacting wise aside from me reading character scripts off a pc rather than a printed paper
The content of the book is the same either way, so it’s mostly just down to personal preference.
You can check out the free Basic Rules if you want a general idea of how the books work there.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
Is it easier to interact with the book or online version of the campaign like I use dnd beyond for making characters
Are there resources for a digital map to use instead like irl so basically were playing g tabletop but we are doing it via dnd beyond for 9ur characters and just have our phones out as our character sheets
That is more handy for you is up to…you
Some prefer the tactile feel of a book
Space limited? A tablet fits easily
It depends on your situation
does anyone have any tips for roleplaying?
i often feel like my own personality is rubbing off on my characters
In fairness, it’s not like that’s wrong. 😅
But there’s an article here with some good advice:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1463-how-to-get-better-at-roleplaying-in-d-d
alright thanks!
does anyone have any kind of advice when it comes to DMing for the first time? Also, I hope I'm not putting this out into the wrong channel. If I am, I'll glady correct that mistake 🙂
How to be a Good DM - Running Your First Game - DM Tips
Oh sorry
There ya go
Thanks! How long have you been a DM for, if you don't mind me asking?
Haha, fair enough, I was just wondering if you had any advice that isn't really touched on in the video
How well do u know the players
Quite well, and they're just as inexperienced as me if it counts for anything
I'd imagine DMing for total strangers as a newbie would be especially challenging
Because try a base is around their character
I will never bring myself to dm I just can’t
It can be a bit hard
Personally I've DMd a few games for non-DnD games (mostly deck quest), but idk about DMing for dnd
But it's mostly just goofing around
Feels a bit weird doing it consistently
It feels pretty overwhelming, especially considering I don't have a massive amount of experience playing dnd in general
I just noticed we are all new
Yeah lol. I just joined
That's neat! I only had the idea to look to discord groups for DM and DND advice today, lol
@tacit acorn @fresh peak @livid prairie what if I made a dnd server for all of us?
Can I hop along
We could all play and learn together?
I joined to ask a question on something. Since I'm doing water deep dragon heist with some friends, and I got myself a tavern! Irl I'm the one reading up on all the rules and everything lol
Sure why not
Already in a campaign actually
I'll make a server
Das y I'm here. But I'd like to join server anyways
I wouldn't mind that! I will say, I am based in Australia, so scheduling actual sessions might be tough if you guys are in the US
But i'd be happy to join
US over here. Already got a game set up with some IRL friends
Make a server then
Oh wait yeah. What I was here to ask.
Yh I'm England but I can make it work
U can be in more than 1
We can make time
At the very least, we could join it and figure out if/when we play later, right?
Maybe
Since I'm running a tavern in the game I'm in rn. I'm thinking of trying to set up some free extra security by setting up some sort of creature or construct to use for protecting the tavern. Anyone known how I could do that? Or should I ask in the other chat
Hire guards
Scheduling a game with just 1 going on at once is already hell lol. I've got school with all honors classes.
It is NOT fun
Well same
So your character is running the tavern in-game?
Yeah. I'm using dornan's guide to tavernkeeping, and that's pretty much what you normally do for getting extra security for a week
It costs quite a bit tho. So I'm trying to think of something so it's free and even more secure
Hmm can be tricky
Thought of maybe something like golems, but they're muuuch higher level
Yh I'm brand new tbh but I have made 4 characters on dnd beyond
does your class have access to magic? summoning some kind of help could work
I got only 1 I'm using rn. A warforged (unique. It's actually like a nanobot swarm using a metal body as a host. Don't question it) paladin.
Cool
considering you wanna do it for free, you don't exactly have many options
I've got a d4agonborn Barbarian
I mean, I have a few ideas for spells. I could do Summoning spell + Binding Circle
- planar bind
Like I said, some Golems
But I'm trying to come up with ideas is the thing
summoning some kind of help seems like your best bet
or animating the dead?
as a paladin, I'm not sure if you'd have access to the spells, but it's an option
hey can canyone tell me how to determine how many spells a character can learn?
Yes, look at the class.
It will say under the Spellcasting class feature the number of spells known.
oh ok thanks
How do I make a character

I didn’t know that bird did that my bad
Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
There are plenty of videos online that provide a full explanation of the character creation process, and character sheets can be found super easily online as well! If you wanna do it yourself, referring to the Players Handbook's your best bet (also available online). If not, I believe DND Beyond has a character creation tool. Make sure to read through the basic rules first if you haven't though 😄
How many cantrips can a character have? if its according to their level doesn anyone have a sheet or photo?
It's according to their class level.
Most of the time 4
But yeah class lvl

Hello
Help here! Wondering about exactly how the heck warlock spell slots work? As far as im aware these spells slots are entirely separate from regular spell slots but they can also are variable at what level they can be cast at? What determines what level a warlock could cast spells at without the multiclass? If, say a paladin were to take a two level dip into warlock, can they then use the warlock spell slots as 5th level spell slots?
How do stats work in this game? I wanted to create a half-elf paladin
It looks like you can only use the warlock spell slots for warlock spells, and the level they come out at is based on your level on the warlock progression chart. Maybe try the #dnd-rules channel to be certain?
The basic rules cover how to determine stats during character creation
All the spell slots are of the max level
Which is shown in the class table
Did you read the free Basic Rules yet? It's covered in the first chapter.
How does that interact with the spell slots from being a paladin?
Looking for it rn ik i red it a while back

They’re seperate but can be used for the same spells
Can we take this to another channel? I want to understand it but it's not really newcomer material.
It kinda is
OK, cool! Say we have a level 9 paladin with 2 levels in warlock. What's their spell slot arrangement?
Level 9 Paladin spell slots + level 2 warlock spell slots
Can you cast paladin spells using the warlock slots?
And would that mean casting them at your warlock power level, or would they still be at the higher paladin level?
If you cast them with the warlock spell slots, they are upcast to the warlock slot level
So the warlock spell slots act as level 1 spell slots in this example
Gotcha, so they're interchangeable for type, but they still keep their individual power levels. That's great, thanks!
Yeah
Thank you 👍
Hey all, I'm gunna be looking at the basics in a bit (I kinda know em but I mean properly read through em, like I did for pathfinder.) I've never played a DND game but would really love to. My only issue is timing and actyfinding a group. Anyway, I'll get to that when I get to that my actual question is, if you're a wizard or mage basically a magic person, I'm guessing you have predefined skills/abilities you can use. If however, while exploring you wanted to control flow of water, crumble rocks to make a bridge, is that something you can just do(with a roll ofc) Is it Dam's choice? Does it depend what kind of magic you use?
I believe you'll need to use certain spells creatively to achieve those goals. The DMs I've played with allow flexibility when it comes to using spells for different purposes, so it really depends on who's running your game. For example, trying to use telekinesis to manipulate rocks in order to make a bridge, etc. Others can feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm fairly certain that's the gist of it
I hope that helps!
Alright rha k you that makes sense! I figured it'd be something like that. That certainly does help thank you 🙂
Can you tame dragon in dnd?
Ask your Dungeon Master - it may be possible or it may be improbable. Or just not make sense for the type of D&D game they're running.
Aren't most dragons intelligent creatures?
dragons are people, so "tame" is categorically the wrong word to use
As a destined Hexblade Warlock, how would you allocate those stats: 15, 14, 14, 13, 9, 7? Won't be dubbing in multiclassing.
this is a better question for #character-discussion
Okay, thank you
Hello, I'm a begginer in DnD and I have a question. How does time work in DnD? For example, I know that a long rest takes 8 hours, but how much is that in real time?
Mere seconds in real time
For DND beyond, if you delete a character, does it free up your six character slots?
Only really White dragons really come close to 'tame' but it's more about them being simple creatures, they don't necessarily plot or scheme, they just kill, freeze, take, and keep.
Then the Githyanki ride Red dragons...
Yes it does
Ok thank you. I was worried about the 6 character limit
Hi everyone! I just made my first character and was wondering if anyone would be willing to look it over. If you can I’ll dm you the sheet. Thanks!
I'd be down for that
Ok I sent it
Should I check every looking for players post or is there like a time/time of week I should pay more attention during ?
Check it as you’re able.
I think it's possible to put a post up to advertise yourself. If you know when you can be free to play, maybe try that?
I remember trying that ages ago but all the different things it asked me confused me too much
Look at someone else's post, and try to copy that with your details.
It gives you an overview of what each option means as you fill it out 🙂
sure
Hey guys, bery new to D+D. Picked up BG3 and it really made me want to try out a campaign. Is there any way I can start one from here, or another discord server? any recommendations or advice? Thanks!
check out the #find-a-game channel! That should be able to help you
Hey
Yoo
Hello, would people be interested in a newbie DM?
I'm a newbie myself, just made my first character. I'm down!
You can post an invite in #looking-for-players and see. (There’s instructions in #find-a-game.)
when levelling up, is it more common to use the average of the hit point die or actually roll it?
rules say you can do either, not sure what to do with my son (I'm DMing our first runthrough of the game)
any general tips for a newbie that isnt like written in the hndbook and stuff? (tips on warlock class is even more appriciated)
Here are some general tips:
- make sure your character wants to be an adventurer, and wants to be part of a group. “Lone wolf” type characters are super popular among beginners, but don’t really work great in game. This is a cooperative team game after all
- “Flavor is free.” As long as you don’t change the mechanics of something, you can reflavor into whatever you want. For example, the spell burning hands is a come in front of you that deals fire damage. So, while the spell description says it releases a literal spout of fire in front of you, you could reflavor it to be scalding steam, or a monk punches the air to vibrate the air molecules to super heat them, or anything like that. So long as the damage amount, damage type, and area of effect stays the same, you can make it look and feel whatever you want.
- taking notes as a player is generally a good idea to help you remember plot points, or NPC names, and that kinda thing.
I have a question about short rests/long rests and adventuring; I'm not really sure how they should be used. like, should I be having my son's character do a long rest at the end of every 'day' in roleplaying?
and if a scenario finishes with them at an inn or whatever, can I just give them all their hit dice back by saying they stayed at the inn for a week which is like 7 long rests? does it work like that?
and if I DO do that, do I then need to include the lifestyle expenses stuff?
Long and short rests are the player’s decision to make, not the dm. The player tells the DM “I’d like to take a long rest” and then they go to bed for the day. If the player wants to stay at the inn for 7 days, they can, though that might be a boring adventure lol.
But it wouldn’t really be the adventure, right?
That was a joke
Like we’d just say ‘they stay for a week’, and then I’d run their next adventure? The game isn’t actually in real-time, right?
Sorry; I got it was a joke, but then I’m not sure. Like I can’t tell how other players are doing it.
The game is not run in real time, correct. If they want fo stay a wolf week, you can fast forward through it
One session does not equal one day in game
Yeh okay fine. So in one sense any time I start a new adventure, they’ll be starting with full hit dice? Unless I specifically interrupt their long rest on purpose with some adventure element?
