Attack rolls determine if an attack hits or not, yep. If the Attack roll (d20 + attack bonus) meets or beats the targets AC then the attack hits.
Exceptions are if you roll a 20 on the D20, before any modifier. This is a critical hit, and automatically hits the target and also doubles the damage dice (you roll twice as many dice). or if you roll a 1 on the D20, which is an automatic miss.

One of the core concepts of D&D is the three types of d20 roll:
- Attack rolls
- Saving throws
- Ability checks
Do rituals cost a spell slot? Whats the difference between rituals vs non ritual spells
Ritual spells do not cost spell slots, which is their advantage. The disadvantage is they take longer to cast and cannot be 'up cast' (casting using a higher slot to give the spell more power) because you are not using a slot.
Certain spells have a special tag: ritual. Such a spell can be cast following the normal rules for spellcasting, or the spell can be cast as a ritual. The ritual version of a spell takes 10 minutes longer to cast than normal. It also doesn't expend a spell slot, which means the ritual version of a spell can't be cast at a higher level.
thanks you two for helping me out, appreciate it. have a good rest of your day 👍
But the silence spell just says casting time is 1 action
But cast as a ritual, will take 10 minutes and use no spell slot.
So you can either cast normally, spending a spell slot, or cast as a ritual.
"Certain spells have a special tag: ritual. Such a spell can be cast following the normal rules for spellcasting, or the spell can be cast as a ritual. The ritual version of a spell takes 10 minutes longer to cast than normal."
Ritual casting a spell is a trade; you trade not having to use up a spellslot for adding ten minutes to the casting time
so you get double the dice not you ×2 your normal rolls?
yep

Dose this place only have Americans or are people from other countries here ? Just wondering because I’m English and it would be a little inconvenient finding people to play with if everyone is American
People from all over the globe, welcome fellow Brit
This is an international server, but for moderation purposes, English language only
Should I post the link here?
Yes
Ok! Hehe good because I’ve heard D&D games are hard to organise so I’d hate to imagine if all the players were in different time zones too
They can be hard to organise
It seems like there are a lot of Brits here too, so I wouldn't worry about it too much. I'm one too.
I’ve never played D&D before but would absolutely love to try
IRL or online, England has loads of geek retreats popping up and they tend to run dnd a few nights a week
I’ve already checked they don’t exist near me
A local game store might also do that. I live in a fairly small but geek-heavy town, so we have 2!
Plus idk if I’d have the confidence to go somewhere like that on my own
virtual play might be best for you then.
I play virtually, because it's a lot easier for my party, and one person now lives in Sweden.
Yeah I’m assuming I should look on the looking for players tab ?
yup!
Yes just respond under the ad in the thread attached
Equip your weapons and armour
What is owl-bears ?
Oh ok! Never heard of it before tbh

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1fqCm4tA5Y_WxlqgryUM_iaz3l7B3zZ0m/view good guide to finding games online (credit iamrazorwing)
I’ll look at those when I’m free, thanks!
Also we have #find-a-game which has some info on how to find D&D games and important instructions on how to use our LFG (looking for game) channels here on this server.
Yeah I’ve looked at that already but thanks!
And then everything is good?
whats the difference between normal proficiency and proficiency dice?
Where are you getting proficiency dice? I am unaware of that particular term.
Proficiency is a bonus to show how skilled you are. See https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/using-ability-scores#ProficiencyBonus
The proficiency bonus goes up as you reach certain levels - 5th, 9th, 13th, and 17th levels. See your class table to see the details.
i found it on reddit, tho if its not in the rules, i think it may be homebrew
Yeah sounds like a homebrew. I do recall seeing one like that at some point where they use a die instead of static number
oh, i thought it was like a stat roll, where instead of getting just a the bonus, you rolled to see how high your bonus would be
When is the best time to look in the looking for players section ?
When you are looking for a game.
When you're not looking for a game that same day.
Hey guys! Does anyone know of any website or such I should use before attempting to join a campaign? I'm not familiar with such platforms but I know the generic rules just not what you would use for online D&D.
Weirdly, no, there are quite often people posting for games the same day and at least once a week you get someone saying something like "we start in an hour and need a player now".
Depends on what virtual tabletop is used by the group you join. Roll20 is pretty simple, and I have no ideas about others.
Really? Alright, I'll keep that in mind next time I spin something up.
Wait how do I do this?
click on the boxes in you inventory
I think I did it
There aren't really any special rules you need for Online D&D.
and if the DM uses a specific VTT (virtual table top) or another website they will tell you
Hello there, I'm extremely new to D&D and was wondering what would be the easiest class and race to play as?
I recommend picking a race and class that sounds interesting and fun for you.
Yeah I was thinking of becoming a necromancer but I thought it would be a bit hard for my first character.
Yeah I would be careful with magic casting classes as that adds more rules/mechanics you have to learn - that said, if that's interesting to you, dig in and learn how magic works in D&D and learn how your class uses it.
dndbeyond is also a good one to check out
Thank you for the advice, I think I will try it out because eventually I'll have to learn it anyways.
Hi, new DND player here with absolutely zero experience other than Baldur’s Gate 3. Would love to play but unsure as to how to get started!
?new - useful resources to go through to help get you started. Feel free to ask specific questions here or in an appropriate channel
What is D&D?
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
How does it work?
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
Where do I start?
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
My favourite advice is to watch some actual play! Dimension 20 is my fav, but things like Nadpod or Critical Role are also obvious contenders. Gets you a nice overview how things work!
thanks!
yeah I’ll do that, I heard critical role is great. I’m also trying to find a group as where I live there’s basically no one who plays dnd
Dungeon Dudes Dungeons of Drakkenheim is also a good show/podcast. Just remember that most D&D live play streams are entertainment first and not training guides per se.
?looking - here’s info on how to use our LFG channels.

got it, where I live there’s a store that imports things from WOTC and there’s the 5E players handbook, would that be worth a purchase?
I suggest trying the game with just the free basic rules and if you like it, the players handbook is a good resource to buy
got it, thank you!
Can also buy it in DnDBeyond if you prefer digital access over physical and it also connects into DnDBeyond’s character sheet service and tools.
Ah that’s interesting thanks for the advice much appreciated! Can’t wait to get started
How do I become a necromancer?
There's a wizard subclass, or you could just be a class with access to spells like Animate Dead. #character-discussion can likely give you more intel!
Isnt grave cleric also a necromancer
To an extent. Really, a potential player has to decide what makes a necromancer and then look at the classes/subclasses that give the relevant abilities.
Quite the opposite, really. The primary tenant of Grave Clerics, from a lore perspective, is to protect the balance of life and death, and to actively hunt and destroy perversions of that cycle, such as the undead
Aye, Death Domain Clerics are more of a necromancer. Grave Clerics are closer to a psychopomp than they are a necromancer
I'm new to the game and looking for an online group to play with as I can't seem to find people where I live to play with
This bot post should explain how to find an online game through this server ⬇️

Those aside, I collected some resources into this guide for finding a group/game: #third-party-tools-archive message

Hello all! I'm new here and looking for a mobile friendly dnd group?
First things first, have you read at least the basic rules
I've played a dnd type game before in real life and I'm looking an online group to join along. I miss playing it.
sorry, a “dnd type game”? Was it D&D fifth edition? Thats the game this server is for…
I cant remember what the name of it was. But it was a different storyline than the original dnd. It's been a minute since I've played it.
It was pathfinder. I had to look it up.
How does one make a character for a campaign on here?
I’m using D&D beyond but idk if that’s the best idea because I’m also new to D&D
You either make a character using a creator like D&D Beyond or use the character sheets (either print 'em out or just enter info on the PDF itself).
Find blanks and pre-generated characters here: https://dnd.wizards.com/resources/character-sheets
Same here @reef gulch , but I would like to find a group to join and play again
See #find-a-game for instructions on using the server's Looking for Group/Game channels.
Pathfinder is not D&D, a different system
What you need is to learn dnd
I'd like to learn and play.
I personally think dnd beyond is great! The character creator really helps to guide you through it.

Great!
I have a question about tools. For example, the herbalism kit. I looked through the basic rules and dont really understand. If I purchase one of these kits, can I use it? I know I wont necessarily be proficient with it. The follow up question is, how would I become proficient with it? I'm trying to plan out my wizard's future in herbalism. Currently just lvl 1.
You need to be proficient with the tool to get its full potential.
Herbalism Kit. This kit contains a variety of instruments such as clippers, mortar and pestle, and pouches and vials used by herbalists to create remedies and potions. Proficiency with this kit lets you add your proficiency bonus to any ability checks you make to identify or apply herbs. Also, proficiency with this kit is required to create antitoxin and potions of healing.
Tool proficiency can be gained through your background selection or race
I would strongly caution against making this the focal point of your character as herbalism application in the game is extremely minimal
So the only way to gain proficiency with a tool is through background selection or race??
Or if your DM allows you some downtime training.
If I buy tools at hardware store I'm not instantly a mechanic. You need training with the tools, typically through background.
That said you can make a custom background rather than one of the premade ones if you want specific skill/tool proficiencies.
The hermit background will give you proficiency with the herbalism kit. You can reflavor it to suit your backstory
As a human, when I level could I take a proficiency rather than the +2 ability points? Not saying I WOULD do that, just trying to figure out how else you could gain a proficiency.
Given enough free time and the services of an instructor, a character can learn a language or pick up proficiency with a tool.
Receiving training in a language or tool typically takes at least ten workweeks, but this time is reduced by a number of workweeks equal to the character's Intelligence modifier (an Intelligence penalty doesn't increase the time needed). Training costs 25 gp per workweek.
This is optional, so ask your DM!
What is workweek?
I assume 10 days, 8 hours perday
Weekdays.
There isnt an option, AFAIK, to take a proficiency instead of an ASI. The option is to take a Feat instead of the ASI
I suppose there is a feat there might give tool proficiency
Ok, thanks
You actually could! The feat you could take in question is called Skilled.
Or, you could ask your DM if he’ll just…give you proficiency with it outright
It’s such a mechanically small thing it wont affect the balance
Taking a skill proficiency isn't worth giving up a potential feat or 2 ability scores from ASI.
You can make custom background with the desired skill. You are limited by the premade ones found in the PHB.
What is asi?
Yea I dont imagine I would ever give up a feat or ability points for a skill proficiency. Was just wondering.
Ability Score Improvement
Ability Score Increase.
Most classes get 5 opportunities to increase their base stats, and that's referred to as an ASI
5 no? Or am i misremembering
an ASI is worth at least 3 skill proficiencies according to wotc anyway, and Skilled isnt exactly a popular feat
The first ASI is at level 4
This is getting a bit beyond the scope of this channel
Typo!
I'm new. I don't have friends that want to play and I have always wanted to try it out. I would I find people to try it out with?
Looks like I will need the Players Handbook to look into feats. Just a brief mention in the free rules book...
Same here whiskey. I want to play and learn as I go
Theres a channel for finding games
#find-a-game
You can also look for in-person games locally.
locally, my antisocial and high level of anxiety, o god lol
learning is a joint endeavor. Others may happily play with beginners, but you should also invest the time to learn the rules by reading the material or watching videos
I mean, nobody can force you to do anything you dont wanna do, it’s a game
But it is best played with real people at a table, and it can be a worthwhile experience in learning how to interact with people
How do I find people in my area? Or even on Table Top Sim?
Look for local gaming or comic book stores, use facebook, warhorn, meetup, craiglist
Universities usually have dnd clubs
Maybe a library
If you want to find a game, look wide and far
Also, there msy be game or hobby conventions in the area, which usually have dnd games
okay thank you
hey I got into dnd from baldurs gate (formerly interested in dnd beforehand) and was wondering if dnd players are welcoming regarding me trying to copy my game habits
like my character, backstory and etc. and im all new to tabletop so I'm not really sure what to do
On the one hand, your character shouldn't be set in stone before you get to a game; you should, ideally, have character concepts so that the character you do play fits the setting/tone/etc. of the game the DM has prepared. On the other hand, many DMs will be open to working with you to make your character fit the game.
So in short, be willing to compromise.
Especially if you expect it in return.
yeah for sure
@slow hawk I wish I could go to a local table top one. Unfortunately my situation at hand doesn't allow it to be a possibility. Hence why im looking for an online group for newbies
I want to run as close as I can to my dragonborn haunted one, but I heard that kinda vibe isn't fitting in general
Using all that as a foundation for a tabletop character sounds great. Trying to carbon copy it to a character sheet will not be as smooth.
That really depends on the DM and the game. Ultimately, I would try to recognize that the video game and the tabletop are related but they aren't identical, so treat them differently.
okay yeah
Plus you'll probably start out at lvl 1. Not gonna sugar coat it - lvl 1 and 2 is not as fun as 3+ but important to learn some core concepts like resource management and caution.
not looking forward to early levels haha
I bet you won't run into too much trouble! I'm actually thinking about hosting a couple one shots for beginners hailing form bg3 that are more or less set in the games verse to make the transition a little easier for newcommers. For a game like that, I'd happily invite anyone to bring their bg3 character. For something like a homebrew campaign, you'll probably have more trouble fitting it into the world.
there's sessions after class today in like 4 hours
Never a better time to learn that "running away is always an option"
I'm tryna prepare ad much as I can
That alone makes you a player I'd want at my table.
Will it be an actual session, or just character creation/session zero?
I dont really knoe
this is 2nd session I think, so it should be a welcoming maybe?
adopt me
Hahaha mannn I got a table of 6 already and they are more than a handful
My recommendation—which you're free to ignore—is have some character ideas, know how to make a character, and know the basic rules of how to make an attack, skill check, etc. (in other words, where info is on your character sheet and what numbers to add when).
i most certainly will not ignore that
I hope the club is teaching as the main focus at the beginning
most players are OG apparently
hello, i am new to dnd, can someone explain how campaigns/games work ?

I would suspect so, but it doesn't hurt to be ahead of the curve. There's an interactive character sheet on this page you may want to look at (scroll down): https://dnd.wizards.com/further-resources
thx
This is also fantastic advice. Also, familiarise yourself with the basics of a combat turn. You have one action, one bonus action, and a movement, so make sure you know how much you get to move each turn and where to quickly find your actions and bonus actions on your sheet
Good call. Here's a handy cheat sheet: https://crobi.github.io/dnd5e-quickref/preview/quickref.html
I'm familiar was what aspects bg3 had in common with dnd
level 5 adds extra attack and etc
I THINK
better early than never 😈
Trust me, there's enough rules to learn without planning that far into the future haha
For sure! I don't want anyone new to get overwhelmed.
dnd is intimidating
but enthousiasm certainly is on your side
...except when I say wizards are for newbies too. Don't let them overwhelm you!
is barb newbie friendly?
yeahh
I like not resting after every fight
Has got to be the newbie friendliest
Very! Especially on early levels
ima throw someone into a chasm
barb still is one of my favorite classes 2 years and 200 unused character concepts later
Lol! Ya know... Chasms do seem a lot more prevalent in the video game than the tabletop.
wdym
There aren't just bottomless pits all over Toril. And throwing someone into water isn't insta-death.
if there are no chasms you can always throw people into other people
rocketiering
and yell strike
Artificer isn't a base class and so may not be allowed at all tables.
To say nothing of the difficulty of crafting ordnance.
You'll have to ask your DM! Some worlds might not have the necessary components to do so.
Important questions to ask yourself first: how would your character know how to make a rocket launcher?
throw a fireball into a bigass cannon and kablooey
magic.
Is there Any free D&D sheet for goodnotes?

So I wanna play with all content, but i can't pay on dnd beyond, I know there's shared content but i don't know anyone who can provide and don't wanna bother people and beg, is there any sources that make it easier to build you whole sheet while providing all the content for free?
Maybe do a physical sheet or digital and ask people here for information you need the books for but really idk
Ya i was gonna do the digital pdf
but adding all the traits, features, & spell lists is pretty daunting for a new player
Basic rules are free
There have been and may be sales on the digital books
U can also borrow a book from your DM and just use paper or a pdf sheet
Yeah I was just trying to think of a way to include the stuff that costs money
Local library may have books you can look at
HI, I'm trying to get into the game and saw that we can play as Minotaurs how ever on the player hand book the race doesn't show up and I can't find any online handbook on the MInotaur
It’s in theros or monsters of the multiverse
alright thank you very much
I’m new to dnd (know next to nothing about it) and I made a character who’s a warlock, what should I know about the class and anyone know some helpful resources to learn about Warlock magic?
Well, the best place to start for all things D&D would be the free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
You can find the explaination of the Warlock class and it's unique spellcasting mechanics there
If you've read the basic rules, and have some specific questions, we'd be happy to help

I have an idea for a character can you guys help me smoothen it out?
sure thing, but maybe take it over to #character-discussion
oh yeah, thanks :)
Have you …read the Warlock section? I assume you at least have the basic rules
Yo how often is a proficiency bonus going to affect a roll if it’s only like +1 or 2? I have a Goliath that’s surprisingly good at arcana at +1 and stealth at +2
Your proficiency bonus is added to whatever ability skill, saving throw, attack roll, etc that you are proficient in.
a +1 provides a 5% increase on your chances to success in any given situation
Ah ok
Hi! (Let's try this again, I didn't realise I need a profile picture..) I'm Ayx!
I'm completely new to DnD, even though I have alot of social feed based on it
I'd love if someone was able to guide me through making a character and such!
I'm heavily interested in messing with different aspects like depth, lore and such so I'm sure with the right directions i'd be set akwdkalg
Hey there! Welcome to the server! We have some useful resources in the pinned messages to help get new-to-D&D folks started, including links to the free basic rules and other useful resources. Give that a skim and if you have a specific question, feel free to ask here or in an appropriate channel (see id:browse to see all the amazing channels we have).
Hi, thanks! I'll see what I can do even though I'll probably end up referring to some ultra-experienced player anyways LOL
Yeah don't feel like you need to memorize everything - but it's a good idea to have an understanding of the general game mechanics and how your character works.
The rest of it will come through playing.
I'd recommend giving the free basic rules a skim, watch some videos of folks playing D&D (liveplay streams on YouTube/Twitch but rememeber they focus on entertainment rather then teaching the rules), then try making a character or two. Then find a group and start playing!
@past sphinx @sudden otter update, their campaign is apparently in the 1930s
Hehe yeah that'll make it harder to transfer a character concept from BG3
How is this connected to answering newcomer questions?
I may be missing some context here
I'm severely dissapointed
Hello ! I just made my character and i would like to know how does the game/campaign go (if you have any videos to recommend, i would gladly watch it).

I'm a newcomer with no experience, and looking forward to the fantasy spell improv experience
only to be thrown into the middle of a 1930 campaign with guns
and im apparently a cultists which I had no decision in what so ever
Check the handbook helper videos but you f you want to see some live play, I like the Dungeon Dude’s Dungeons of Drakkenheim live play on YouTube.
and my name is yog
Well no D&D is better than bad D&D. Id recommend looking for your next group/game that better fits the kind of D&D you’d like to play.
I can agree with that statement, no dnd is better than bad dnd
pineapple gets it
no Character sheets apparently
my backstory is banished from the church by sneezing on parents ashes
No character sheets? Get outta that situation asap
Like in some situations, character sheets aren’t needed, but assuming you are playing dnd, since this is a dnd discord, if you don’t have a character sheet, there’s a issue
I don’t know why they aren’t up front about their kind of D&D game…
we sit in a circle talking, and the dm uses the virtual dice
it's not getting better 😭
That dm is probably better off writing a book
honestly, and he's strange in general
I've heard of film students "playing" RPGs like that, no rules, just improv
I'm paired with a Veronica mars, Bob the builder, Ed sheeran
and im a cultist
I done dipped
That’s valid - I do recommend leaving on good terms rather than ghosting. “This game doesn’t really fit my expectations and I’m not really having as much fun as I hoped. I’m going to go find another group - thank you for having me.”
Please read #find-a-game
We have several LFG channels.
????
yeah I went back to make sure to do that
thank you
I think ill have my games online
how would i apply for looking for dm
figuratively
Ah
Please read (carefully) #find-a-game - it has instructions on how to use our LFG channels and other useful information.
thank you
a Crack addict failed musician, a psycho demolition guy, and a private detective solving a unsolvable case
the first decision that was made was blowing up a building which ended up sending a cat named Henry to his maker
I'm quite weirded out by my "dm's" extensive imagination
these were his words in quotes
Hi I am new to dnd and the DM said he is supposed to assign what race you can play as, is this true?
Absolutely not
The character creation section of the basic rules quite literally ask you to pick a race as part of the process
The caveat is that the DM may be running a very custom campaign in a setting with certain races, which would be his homebrew
oh
If he is running that type of setting that it should be very clear what players are signing up for
i dont think he is because he let other people be dragonborn and elf and stuff but he said i have to be human fighter
DMs may limit character options for game story and balance reasons (for their particular game or campaign) but they should be pretty clear about it and communicate why they are putting such restrictions in place.
Your first step in playing an adventurer in the Dungeons & Dragons game is to imagine and create a character of your own. […] You choose a race (such as human or halfling) and a class (such as fighter or wizard).
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters
Literally chapter one, paragraph one.
Potentially bc you’re new the dm is trying to make it easier by making you a human fighter? Not great practice tho
Is this DM suggesting or forcing bc theres a difference
I would ask them outright: is there a reason I’m expected to be human when others got to choose their race? I’d like to choose my own as well.
forcing
also, better practice would simply to run a Session Zero with you as a human fighter
See how you like it, give the opportunity to switch
U can do multiple session zeros as well
well he said that we have to use the same character for the rest of the year so I dont want to be a human fighter
Yeah there’s a saying, no dnd is better than bad dnd
Maybe they’re running a campaign with premade characters, like DOSI, and the others just made their choices first?
I will ask but he said that DM always chooses what race you can be
We play games like D&D to have fun - if it’s not fun, it’s time to pause things and figure out why and get back to having fun. Or else why play?
I think you should start by simply explaining that you don’t really want to play a human fighter. Hopefully they’ll work with you to find a better fit. If not, I would politely decline to join, then.
That is false
Is it wrong that I want to design a character first-thing, picking up a few things on the complex side along the way and then go into deeply analysing all sorts of stuff like.. uh.. Divine Agents, Domains etc. (I'm sorta interested with going Cleric)
A cleric would need to choose a domain at level one.
Unless you start as something else and then multiclass into cleric.
As long as you have selected all the mechanical options that are required, you can create your backstory as you go(thats what I do with most of my characters). As spamandtuna said, choosing the domain is required
Right, i'm gonna borrow this to see how far it can get me before my mind loses it's course LOL
Hopefully familiarise myself with a bunch of stuff...
dndbeyond has one of the better character creators ive seen, so id suggest using it
I would also recommend going in with a few loose ideas for characters that would interest you.
Would more than one warlock in a party be a bad idea?
You see, I struggle with the interest part because
Seeing as alot of DnD revolves around really getting into your role, I think i'd be most comfortable with starting off in a role that feels almost like me
That way I won't stress as much on the character itself
But i'm weird so thinking of the race, class, etc is a struggle but I should manage, maybe
It depends. Usually, I try to create characters that dont step on other people's toes, so we can all have fun, but if you need another warlock for whatever reason, then it can work. You can easily build a warlock that goes for more control/support, rather than damage, or vice versa
You mean the online one? Turns out I've already got an account so I could use that if it's easier than the character sheet
Yeah
Please dont ping me in the future, but yeah, dndbeyond is really easy for character creation, and you can download a pdf version of the sheet if you really want
You should bear in mind…it’s a game. It’s supposes to be fun.
While live streams have made intense roleplay a latge part of the experience, it doesnt HAVE to be
It’s supposed to still be a group of people sitting around a table having a fun adventure
I am physically incapable of having fun unless I know for a fact i've crossed out every option with me humiliating myself, LOL
thank you for reminding me though
yeah, I get that feeling, it can be tough at times, but with a good group, even if you humiliate yourself, everyone will laugh it off, and you can keep going happily
Yeahhh, probably doesn't help that i've got immense social anxiety
So do I, you just gotta find a group that works, I've found a incredible group, we've finished nearly 2 full campaigns(witchlight, finishing up strahd), and starting on a third(netherdeep), they've been great, putting up with my horrible roleplay
uhhhh, why did Dyno react to my message?
I’m about to create my first real character for my first long term campaign, all the other characters I’ve made have been for 1 night dungeons and I make the same strength based character every single time. Any ideas for something new I can try that isn’t too complicated?
A nonSTR based character could be a rogue Or ranger
Do you like martials, or would you like to play a caster?(Physical, or magic)
rogue isnt complex, just two things to learn: Sneak Attack and Cunning Action
strahd
I think I enjoy physical more
ranger gets a bit of magic
Would you like multiple weaker hits, or one strong hit
magic is fun to try
I always try to kill things in as few hits as possible so I’d like to try something new
Maybe something in the middle
please dont ping me, but if you want a few stronger hits, I suggest paladin, they can power up their attacks to do really strong hits, but they also get 2 attacks per attack action at level 5, which is right in the middle for martials
Okay, so, what's the best way to actually choose a class?
I feel like I want something magic-related, but somewhat smart and balanced (which is probably every magic-related class in the world, based on what i've read LOL.)
Ok thank you
Did I turn ping off on that one I dont remember
magic relate, smart and balanced, wizards have a ton of spells, so they can fill just about every role in the party, except healer
well, they can do life transferrence, but thats rather inefficient(hurts you and takes a spell slot)
If you’re not into reading, I would strongly suggest not going with a spellcaster, as thats literally forcing you to read more, a spell list
The easiest class Mechnically to start with is fighter
Yeah, but they didnt seem to say that they dislike reading a lot
I'm bad at processing things but uhh, from what I think i've seen so far spell list's don't seem to be the worst thing in the world
if you want a "in general can do anything" caster, I definitely suggest wizard, if you are looking for something else, what are you looking for
Hm..if as far as all-rounders go wizard comes to mind, what is Cleric considered around here?
from what i've read they seem really hit-or-miss on healing and/or major offensive benefit
I cant believe I forgot about clerics, clerics are literally jack of all trades, I havent played control clerics, so I'm not sure if thats possible, but everything else, a cleric can do(they can also melee stuff)
I cannot more strongly recommend against wizard for someone that already is saying they have trouble processing before even reading the rules.
Wizards have the biggest spell list
What are we doing
Ive played multiple clerics that almost exclusively cast guiding bolt/inflict wounds, which isnt necessarily the "best" way to play, but it works
they said spell lists dont seem to be that bad
You cant play “i dont process things” to avoid reading the rules and then jump into a wizard spell list, the spells wont mean anything if you dont have a grasp of the rules first
Idk seems fine to me
All I know when it comes to DnD rules is alot revolves around Rolling a D20 or specific-numbered dice like a D10, then applying bonuses that usually count with your character's stats + any proficiency bonuses if i'm being honest-
That is fair, can you clarify more on the "I dont process things"?
I suggest reading through the dnd rules a bit more then, a decent bit of reading is required to play the game
So lets expand that. Read this stuff:

I will try to read that and simultaneously create my character
Or
If you can't get your head around the rules before getting into a game, that isn't so bad. I know plenty of people that have rocked up to a game for the first time having done far less in terms of prep. If you can, I'd suggest getting a good grasp of the character you want to play from a personality/aesthetic standpoint and let your DM guide you through the process in-person
In the game, while you dont know the rules, you can just describe what you want your character to do, and let the DM tell you what dice to roll and modifiers to add. Nobody knows all the rules off by heart anyway
I mean, I created my character first, and learned as I went, and it worked
Yeah same
I read the spell list and it was interesting so I made a wizard and then caught up on the rules later
As long as you have a good enough understanding of the rules to create a character, then it can work, the dndbeyond character creator is really helpful for creating a character and learning the game, you can google/search up any terms you dont understand as you go
For some reason what you're saying sounds like a blessing
I had no idea DM's can actually support players in that sense
If you can create a character on your own, and know what each thing does, you can play dnd, your dm can help fill in any gaps in your knowledge
If you dont know what everything does, thats fine, as long as you know how attacks, ability checks, saving throws, and the spells youve picked(if any) work, then you are probaly fine
I mean, ability checks are simply when the DM requests you to read in consideration with your character's stats right?
Like, a strength check for the likelihood of let's say..a character punching and breaking a stone pillar?
Yeah, alternatively, you can ask your dm to attack something if you want to break something, but yes, that would work, its more of a athletics check though
Ah got it
I'm currently trying to use this random guide I found online to understand what each stat means which'll make it 500% easier to statbuild my character
Ah, I have the perfect thing for that
The one I found compares everything to tomatoes in some way and it's...actually good?
uhhh, mine is similar but fruits, ill type it out just in case its useful for anyone else
Strength: How far you can throw a fruit
Dexterity: How accurately you can cut a fruit
Constitution: How many rotten fruits you can eat until you get sick
Wisdom: Knowing what fruits are edible, and what fruits are poisonous
Intelligence: Knowing the type of fruits, where they grow, ideal conditions, etc
Charisma: Your ability to sell a fruit
Will my character’s appearance have anything to do with the role play aspect of the game
Instead of a random guide on the internet, have you considered the basic rules?
Which are free and available here?

Why are you being so passive-agressive with me-
the "random guide" isnt a full guide to dnd, from my understanding its just to know what each ability score does
as to this question, I'd say yes, unless your dm completely ignores appearances
Yes, and? they arent necessarily the best to understand what a specific thing does.
this channel isnt intended to explain how to play to individuals
It’s for addressing specific questions from new players
If there is no mechanical impact, it doesnt matter
Nice strawman argument, where was the "explain how to play" part
Can I be comically muscular
Sure
yes, but it would make less sense if your character had a strength of 8(below average, 10 is average). If you want to do something like that, I suggest playing a character with a high strength score
We don’t have the bandwidth to teach folks one on one how to play D&D. But we can answer specific questions. We do expect folks to put some effort into learning the game - just like any other game. Also there is no “correct” way to learn.
Yeah, so I'm confused where I was teaching someone how to play dnd, if you can point that out, that'd be appreciated, so I can stop doing that, and focus more on answering specific questions, I do have a issue with sidetracking quite often
How much of a difference do languages necessarily? There are very many options from what I see on the builder
In my experience, you should definitely not do all of the work for your players. If they learn how to play themselves, they will be invested.
I know that, but where did I say you should do all the work?
You didn't
Buddy its time to move on
It was just a mistake I made
I get like, what languages mean on a basic level for something like DnD, but is there anything I should be overly wary of
Languages affect who you can communicate with, which can affect roleplay, but in terms of combat, It doesnt really affect much
My comment was a general observation and not a critique of you or anyone else.
I did not intend it to come across as a critique
Alright, thanks for clarifying, I'm legitimately trying to improve my advice, so sorry if I came off as aggressive
Is the digital character builder limited by anything? For some reason the only Domain I can select is 'Life' though I'm pretty sure I saw atleast 10 other options on other platforms
Unless that's limited based on stats, too..?
You have to buy the sources to use them in dndbeyond, any website that gives you everything for free is piracy
Ah I figured
if it lists the domains but doesnt tell you what they do exactly, its fine
What's the difference between dropping to 0 hit points and dropping to 0 hit points while dying?
Dropping to 0 causes you to start dying unless said otherwise.
Oh ok ty
Does improved pact weapon make it so you can now make any weapon on the weapons list except blowgun and net?
it allows you to make a shortbow, longbow, light and heavy crossbows, along with the previously allowed weapons into a pact weapon. I hesitate to make general judgements, because theres usually a exception
Does lifedrinker make you add your charisma mod in damage twice? Hex warriror says you can add it to damage and attack once then life drinker says you can add it to damage, so you can get 10 extra damage per hit with a +5 charisma?
In essence. Hex Warrior lets you use your charisma modifier in place of strength or dex for a weapon while the Lifedrinker invocation lets you deal an additional amount of necrotic damage on hit equal to your Charisma modifier. So overall the damage can be upward of 10 (+5 from the weapon and another +5 necrotic damage). Mind you, the damage types are different and overall damage may vary depending on if a monster has any resistances.
Is there an art channel in this discord? 🙂
yes, #dnd-arts-and-crafts , if you do not have access to it, head to id:customize , for future reference though, this is a dnd channel
Is there anyone who could help me create a character?😅 I have an idea of what I what type of character I want I just have no idea how to do everything of choosing stats etc

I'm hoping there's a way to carry over my BG3 over to TTRPG form ><
Some stuff may but you should manage expectations. You still need to learn the rules (scroll up)
Oh yeah def
I just did my first ever dnd experience but it was solo to learn the basics and i was a gunslinger, i proceeded to stalk people at the bar, gaslight 3 people fail awfully and kill 2 random people and ride away towards the sunset and then shot the horse
i love dnd
(no clue if this was an accurate experience at all)
was great though
Yeah that’s kind accurate sometimes
it was so unhinged but it was awesome, though im assuming in the future i cant just go mass murder people in a group without killing the fun
All ttrpg experiences however may be different
Yep pretty accurate
just feel slightly guilty that we never actually did anything planned and i just stared at people at the tables intensenly listening to regular convos
Hey, thinking about trying to play dnd with a few friends soon and want to know any advice anyone may have. I wanna do more unrelated rpg stuff instead of sticking with what dnd has established. I don’t know if it would be best to take rules and stuff or stick with more basic stuff to start.
Mostly copiable, biggest thing is that in 5e there’s no such thing as a high half elf
Half elves are half elves in 5e
Oh yeah disregard the race thing. I play a drow
Ah okay
Yeah pretty doable then
Except you don’t get the increased damage on a wet target
Also you will need 13 str
even if I use a finesse weapon?
So I finally made a character but there some stuff I’m not sure if I should fill out or not can anyone help with that?
Ask here.
So I still haven’t filled out PASSIVE WISDOM (PERCEPTION), OTHER PROFICIENCIES & LANGUAGES, ATTACKS & SPELLCASTING, Equipment, FEATURES & TRAITS and PERSONALITY TRAITS, IDEALS, BONDS, FLAWS, I was told by someone else not to fill those but I wanted to ask here on the server before doing something
Was that someone else your DM? If so they might have some reason, or maybe they wanna do things differently where it makes more sense to fill out later (though even then, I do wonder about some of these things to leave out)
If it was not your DM then don't listen to that random person and feel free to fill them out. They can always be altered later
Hey i like a really really new to D&D and was wondering if anyone could help me understand the game better
What do you wanna know
Yes it was a random person, they helped me with making my character, the stats for everything except what I just mentioned, any tips on how I should fill those out rn?
just like everything i should know going into it i dont really have a base
Players Handbook is a great place to start in that case, it should cover all the basics
where would i find this?
Basic rules are free see the pins in this channel
And for the players handbook, its sold at virtually and physically at every ttrpg retailer
I’d recommend watching YouTube videos to get a basic understanding of the game
Hey I'm newish to D&D I've played a few times with friends but never really got into it. But I wanna give it a try by mixing anime like naruto into it and was wondering if there was any campaigns like that out there (if that makes any sense)
is it possible for characters to have more than 1 action?
There are games out there that try to run stuff like that but to be honest your prob best off playing a different system, dnd isn’t really set up for that power lvl unless your starting at high lvls
Alright thanks

Spread your net wide you may find what your looking for
I'll read through everything tonight and start looking tomorrow thank you for the help
Yes, under some circumstances
and those being?
Action surge is one
Haste another.
Hello I'm knew to DND and I want to make a homebrew world with deep world building
I want to know where should I start or what points would be good to delve deep into for the best player experience
Just out of curiosity, is this your first role-playing experience?
Yes I've never really played DND but I wanted to DM a homebrew world
Thank you
It’s the multiclassing prerequisite for Paladin
ohh
Well that and 13 Cha but as a sorc/pally you’ll probably have that already
You are probably best served by running a prewritten adventure first, but port it into your homebrew world. Dragon of Stormwreck Isle is the easiest one for this, because the island can kinda be anywhere
It's designed to teach DMing
Thank you a lot I'll try and see if I can
is there any dnd compaigns about killing gods? forexample a campaign about killing loth?
not just... anyone? 😦
This is a quieter time of the day so you may have to be patient
I’m sorry I can’t help you personally, I don’t know the answer to that question
There’s probably an official adventure like that, but almost certainly a third party adventure like that tho
You can always make it yourself if you can’t find anything
maybe you have more luck in #dm-discussion?
In our last session my wizard acquired another's spellbook which contained two cantrips they didn't already know. We were all under the assumption that said cantrips could be cast or copied over to my wizard's own spellbook but it seems D&D Beyond won't let me learn/add any additional ones.
Is there a hard mechanical limit to the number of cantrips I can have access to? Can this be circumvented on DDB and if so, should I or would this be game-breaking in anyone's opinion?
Cantrips can’t be learnt from a spell book only levelled spells
if your DM is fine with not going with the standard rules, you can circumvent it and put them on your spell list on dnd beyond by making a homebrew magic item that has the capability of casting these cantrips
I see! Thankyou both
does anybody have a begginer group in cest?
Take a look over at #find-a-game .
ive been looking for days
And #looking-for-players or #750812887697588356 ? It's a bit spread out, but there are options.
ive looked there and #looking-for-community for 3 days
Just gotta keep looking I'm afraid. It can take a while to find a game
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1fqCm4tA5Y_WxlqgryUM_iaz3l7B3zZ0m/view good guide to finding games online (credit iamrazorwing)
Don’t just look here spread your net wide
and be patient too - also you may bounce around a few groups before finding the right group that meshes well and plays a style of D&D that works for you
Hi all where is a good resource to find serious players? I joined a few games but everyone were great people but no one really took the high fantasy and game serious enough. I need no hand holding, rules matter, perma death adventure. Like hardcore D&D lol
That's just something you gotta look for in the game ad, in player's ad, and then cover in session 0.
Honestly I feel like there are DM’s that should be paid. I’m going to go see if I can find one for a group to play at our local magic the gathering shop. I am craving some serious adventures
There are paid DMs, and even some here #paid-looking-for-game
Maybe someone can home brew somehow a brutal survival but slightly balanced hardcore D&D 😂experience
There may be better systems that are the hardcore dnd you are looking for.
5e is more heroic fantasy.
Warhammer Fantasy TTRPG might be what you are after, but that would be an #non-dnd-topics thing
hey all, i have just bought the D&D starter pack, i was just wondering how/when does the game end? do i need to create my own ending?
The adventure will have an ending
Yeah, it's got its own ending, but you can keep playing your own story after that if you want.
Well... most prepared modules have at least a bit of "thank you brave heroes" ending.
The world doesn't end. The characters don't have to end, and no players need to end. It is sort of meant to stay open, sort of like how 80's movies end with a teaser in case they want a sequel.
You can often port the same characters into another campaign of a suitable level. Rules-wise, characters end either by dying (and not getting resuscitated, resurrected, etc.) Or they reach level 20. The Official 5e doesn't really cover advancement beyond level 20, so at that point the characters have essentially "won" D&D.
Of course, the DM can make endings more, or less final.
Campaigns can and do end before level 20 as well, though.
Just whenever the story reaches its natural conclusion.
Its far more common that they do, actually. Reaching level 20 is a very rare thing
so i can like begin and then when the dungeon is completed, start the next day again with the same characters but higher levels with a new quest to continue. it doenst really end but when the dungeon is ended they return home
As the DM, you have a lot of leeway and can use as much or as little of an adventure as you want. Same for the rules, but the rules help give a foundation of mutual understanding to the whole group, players and DM alike, so don't be quick to abandon them. The players do not, however, know what is/isn't in the adventure—or even if they do, they should play as if they don't.
Pretty much, yes?
Uhh... some DMs (most?) don't really give the characters a "home" to go back to, but rather have them move from town to town, set up a temporary home base in a place, stop at hotels, camp in the woods, etc. between in-game adventuring "days".
Often, it will take multiple real world days to go through a single dungeon, depending a bit on play style.
As a DM, the only hard and fast rule about schedule, and story is that everyone involved (including you!) should be having a good time, because if it feels too much like work for anyone, they may decide to quit.
lets say ill start with the already created quests/maps from the book, how does it work? fighting and moving?
ah towns and camps would be good
I'd recommend reading the Basic Rules chapter on combat:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat
Hey what's up
Thanks!
If you've still got questions after that, though, ask away!
The basic rules describe how it works... but sometimes you have to see it in action to understand. Someplace there are videos of campaigns.
The DM describes the setting as the characters would experience it, and gives in-game instructions. Setting: "You're bound, gagged, and blindfolded. You smell stale blood and rotting meat. You hear the voice of two gruff men laughing at your struggles." In-game instructions: " roll for initiative."
Then the players follow instructions: the monk rolls a D20, getting 15, and adds their +5 dex modifier to their roll for an initiative of 20. The cleric rolls 10, and adds their -1 dex modifier to get 9, etc. The DM rolls inifiative for the NPCs, each guard gets 14.
Now you know the order. Monk first, two guards, then the cleric.
Hey it’s been awhile since I played D&D can anyone tell me where I can make a new character and choose class or who is making a new adventure I’m looking to join

Hello everyone, I finally convinced my friends to play dnd and I was wondering which sources are good for a beginner?
As in player books
The Player's Handbook is the core book for the game, players and DMs alike.
You can use the Basic Rules, though, which are free and have most of what's in there.
If you've never played and don't want to plunk down money, that is.
I have some experience with roleplaying but never played dnd yeah
Thank you! Gonna check them out soon
I might recommend relying on the Basic Rules (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules) and see if you enjoy the game first.
Reading it rn, thanks for the help
Hello, I'm wondering where to look to join an online campaign, preferably over discord? Is there a website or specific server?
See #find-a-game for instructions on using this server's Looking for Group/Game channels.
It just popped up on my screen to explore lol. Thanks
If you need more options, I made this LFG guide: #third-party-tools-archive message
If there are any dm’s looking for players to start in a classic D&d campaign I’m a player looking to start
^
It might be a stupid question but... do you guys think its possible to be a dm without having played before? And if so, what are some good resources to learn from?
My friend group wants to start playing, none of us has played before and so one of us would have to be the DM
Plenty of folks start DnD as DMs. I was one of them!
Yes, it's possible. A number of folks in this server have gotten their start as DMs rather than as players.
My recommendations would be Matt Colville's "Running the Game" YouTube series, Sly Flourish's blog/books/videos, Johnn Four's Roleplaying Tips, and blogs by the Angry GM and the Alexandrian. Justin Alexander is releasing a book in November, So You Want to Be a Game Master, that sounds quite promising.
Thank you!!
There's also a metric ton of DM advice on YouTube. I'd absorb as much as you feel comfortable with, not to use it all but to have options. Some will resonate for you, some won't. But the only way to know is to listen to it.
I would start by heading over to #dm-discussion to ask for advice there.
If everyone knows you're all learning together, you'll be fine!
I know this might be a very basic question, but please forgive me as I'm still not quite grasping it even after reading the Starter Kit. When do we usually apply the proficiency bonus, everywhere I read it says it depends on your level, but I must have missed when it becomes relevant
Your proficiency bonus applies to whatever you are proficient in, such as your saving throws (two based on your class), ability skills, and attack rolls with weapons you are proficient with
You proficient bonus slowly increases as you level up (around every 4 or 5 levels).
Is it worth buying the 5e books
If you find the game fun, the books add additional options and rules for your games or even whole prepared adventures you can run. Whether that's worth it to you is completely up to you. I have found many of the books useful and worthwhile for me and my games.
Thanks but I more wanted to know in regards to 6e as it's release date seems to be around 2024
People still play older editions of D&D, so a new edition doesn't make the previous ones disappear.
I'm probably not going to make the jump to the 2024 edition.
WotC isn't going to take away your 5E books if you don't buy the 2024 books right away.
Ah okay
Also we dont know for sure when and what will be released yet anyways
Thank you very much for the answer, I have one more question. In the scenario where, let's say, a hidden pack of Goblins is lurking in the bushes, and one of the player characters decides to attempt a detection check to see if anyone is hiding in the bushes, what rolls should be made? What abilites should be checked on both sides?
Usually it's a perception check (those looking for something) contested by a stealth check (those trying to avoid detection).
Hello! Sorry, a quick question..
I'm building my first character on DnD Beyond.
For advancement type.. shouldn't it be XP over Milestone?
Depends on dm to dm
Usually milestone tho
Depends on the DM and the kind of D&D game they want to run. You can easily toggle it on or off though so don't worry about it too much.
Yee what they said
Ohh, thank you! I'll just toggle it when I have to
The DM of your game determines the method
For the purpose of you building a character for practice, it doesn’t matter
I am destined to be the forever DM, started as DM, and so it has continued
Last question guys, where do you apply ATK bonus that's written on char sheets (I'm using pre-build characters)
Usually I'd put attack bonuses with the weapon item as well as the damage.
I think he’s asking when its used…?
Yeah and what is it exactly, is it bonus modifier from stats + proficency bonus that you just write to keep in mind?
So the attack bonus is the modifier of the attribute used for the weapon (strength modifier for melee, dexterity for ranged, but some exceptions based on the weapon type (finesse weapons can use dexterity modifier)). Then add your proficiency bonus on top of that if you are proficient with that weapon or class of weapons. So say you're a fighter with a shortsword you would take strength modifier + proficiency bonus to generate your attack bonus.
The books next year are still fifth edition, and they’ll work with any books you buy today.
Thanks a lot
The 2024 core rulebooks aren't ushering in a new edition of the game; the books you enjoy today will be compatible with the updated core rulebooks, because it's all the same edition of D&D.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/community-update#2024_core_rulebooks
I'm currently making a Centaur Bladesinger, and I'm trying to decide on their feat right now
I'm drawn to Charger, but
I'm curious, does Charger and Charge actually stack?
Like, if you dash and get the bonus-action melee-attack from Charger , does that melee-attack trigger Charge's bonus-action too?
I suggest asking the fine folks in #character-discussion
This channel is mainly for new to D&D folks to get basic questions answered.
hello, I'm new to DND... I would really like to join a group that can show me how to play and are patient with a new player such as myself. i have played Baldur's gate 3 and divinity OS 2 , and have always loved fantasy stuff. ( i know they are not 100% the same as the board game). I think, i at least understand the basics of playing the game but as mentioned I have never played before... if someone is willing to show/invite me and at the same time guide me i would really appreciate it.
I'm in the same boat man! I've been wanting to play DnD for a long time but have always found it challenging to find a group willing to let me play with me just beginning. Is there a DM here willing to show us newcomers the ropes?
i have seen forums and yt videos where the community talk about being most welcome to new players and introduce them to the game. I hope that is the case. I know playing with someone who has to figure out even the basics can be frustrating. but i'd like to believe, that if you have some experience in fantasy, lore, games, things that are relevant past understanding the game of D&D can give you an significant advantage
You can take only one bonus action on your turn, so you must choose which bonus action to use when you have more than one available.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#BonusActions
I've seen some forums that lead you to places that advertise games but most people want experienced players. Like you said i have a good understanding of the rules and roles, I've just never applied it to a real live game.

Hey all 😁
Hello
How is everyone
I'm doing well how are you
If i multiclass from sorcerer to arcane trickster what's my spell casting modifier?
For sorcerer stuff, sorcerer’s mod
For trickster stuff, trickster’s mod
Review the multiclassing rules. Your spellcasting features are largely separate. Only your spell slots are calculated by combining them (to a degree…Trickster levels only count 1/3)
ok so multiclassing like that is inefficient?
Its fine, but for raw power, its technically weaker
Yes
Multiclassing is a tool that is only effective as the user. Combining classes that rely on different stats means your ability scores are likely going to be spread thin
I wouldn’t recommend multiclassing for a new player, if you don’t have a very good idea what you’re doing it’s extremely easy to make a very weak and unfun character
I already made my character and everything, then another player made theirs but we have the same class (not subclass) we're both sorcerers, how bad is this?
That's fine, you can either work together, lessening the use of each of your spell slots, or you can focus on different fields of magic
Or you can ask your DM if you can make something else
But theres nothing wrong with two sorcs
hi- could i ask how to join D&D campains, if anybody knows how to.
Have a look in our #find-a-game channels
Can you elaborate?
uh
What ID things are you talking about?
Where did you see that?
That information is created by the bot. You don't need to do anything with it.
So, another question ><
I want to do a sorcadin build, but I learned that unlike in BG3, I would need 13 strength in order to multiclass. I guess...can I do that type of stat spread from the very begining?
Yeah you’ll just probably have lower Wis than normal
also, should I create a character first than join a campaign or should I hold off until I find a DM?
I’d recommend coming up with a few loose character concepts you’re interested in.
Then when you find a DM, you can work together to find the best fit for that campaign and finalize any remaining details.
man is so hard to get chosen for a campaign
Yeah, finding a game to join is the hardest part about playing D&D. I'd suggest casting as many lines as possible to increase your chances
Hello, everyone. I'm not 100% new to D&D, but I may as well be with the amount of times I've played. My friends and I are going to start up a session in two weeks and I have decided to take on the mantel of DM. I am finding helpful videos on YouTube, but wanted to know if anyone knew of any printable material like a cheat-sheet for combat and other things. My biggest fear is that someone will want to do something in the game like pick a lock, jump over a hole, etc. and I won't know what to roll or what ability to check it with. Thanks in advance for any advice you take the time to give.
You could print out a character sheet, and cut out the Ability Checks column. All those options listed are by far the most common, and are all you need for ability checks besides the occasional tools check
Idk about yours, but my dm screen doesnt have the list of skill proficiencies on it
I ordered the Essentials Kit and it should be here tomorrow. I will have to see what the included DM screen has for information on it. I appreciate the advice.
There are a bunch out there: https://www.dnd-compendium.com/player-guides/cheat-sheets
Also, just hitting up Google Images will give you plenty. The most helpful one for you is the one you make yourself, though!
I have 2 screens and they have dif stuff, so im not sure but I would assume at least 1 has the skills on it
If not, then Paracosmics idea was pretty good
I saw this link but I couldn't figure out a way to get the images to print correctly. They have great content for sure though. Thank you for the link.
Your best bet is to make your own notes with references to PHB pages, if it's made for yourself it's usually the most useful that way
Imo at least
Anyways, good luck with your first DM session, it's a blast
Thanks. I'll need a lot of luck to get through it for sure. But I will make the best out of it.
Hey everyone. I’m new to DND and just started my first campaign with some friends of mine. Decided on a Ranger as my class. Half elf, half human. I just reached level 3 and picked up primeval awareness as one of my actions. I was just wondering if someone would be so kind as to help me understand how this would work in the grand scheme of things. Any additional info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Hey guys, i have some doubts about Blindsight:
Within the area where blindsight works,
1-Do I "see"/sense behind solid mass (like superman), since it does not depend on the vision?
2- do I "see"/sense everything as if I were in BRIGHT LIGHT?
1- Blight sight cannot see anything behind total cover, so no, it wouldn’t go through solid mass
2- Blightsight is not affected by heavy or light obscurement, since it doesn’t rely on your actual vision to see things. Dim light and darkness are just conditions that create light and heavy obscurement, respectively, so if it helps you to think of it as “bright light” that would be a proper analogy, even if that’s not what’s really happening.
And for the record, in the future, it would probably be better to ask more in-the-weeds questions about how the rules work, like this, in #dnd-rules
What about it confuses you?
During character creation, you picked a type of creature to be your favored foe. Primeval Awareness is sort if a radar to check if any are near
The feature tells you what it takes to activate it.
Primeval Awareness is unfortunately not a very useful effect. Basically, the only thing it can tell you is “Yes or No”
If any creature of those listed creature types is within the range, you get a Yes, and if none are, you get a no. It does not give you any information beyond that. It will not tell you which type of creature they were, it will not tell you where they were, and it will not tell you how many there are. So, if you have a party member that happens to be playing a race who’s creature type is Fey, then Primeval Awareness will always detect them, which means your feature basically won’t work.
If you have access to Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything, an additional source book, there are a host of replacement Ranger features to take
But if not, it’s fine. The PHB ranger works
is there anyone who konws a place to get into a campaign i would like to get into the game

Heres some stuff to get started
yeah im pretty new ive never played but i do want to ofc
That’s a bot command not a question
Here’s what you want to look at
oh. my bad lmao
yeah i've been looking at their web page for a while just reading lol
Yeah have a look at the basic rules
I want to make a character, but how do I know what'll be fun? Moreover, how do I know who fits my playstyle?
Do you want weapon fighting or magic, ranged or melee
Look at the abilities of the different classes to see what interests you
Come up with a character concept and see what class/race/background fits it best
I think the best way to create a character is to make the character first, figure out what type of person they are, and then pick the class that suits them
Yeah, it can work other way around too
and then just make them a wild magic sorc, because the universe is cruel
me who uses what class and race they are to make up the backstory and traits
Usually I pick class first and build a character from that, but if you are new and not sure what to do, I feel like making a character you find appealing is more important then what class they are
Yeah same
John Jimothy
Either way, you won't really know what classes fit your playstyle after you tried a couple. Just pick any one that sounds fun for starters and if after playing it you find out it wasn't exactly up your alley, just pick a different one next time!
Have you read the basic rules?
Yeah
What bits you struggling with
Well I just don't know how to start
Finding a game? Making a character?
The Dungeon Master comes up with a plot outline, and the players say what their actions are, the dice determine success or failure,
Well how does that work digitally do you use a website or? Do you need physical?
You can play in people everyone sits around a table with the DM running the story or you play online using a VTT ( virtual table top )
There are a lot of virtual tabletops like roll20 or you and some friends can sit around using just dice and paper.
You can make character on dndbeyond or write them on paper character sheets
Hmm interesting well I'll probably leave and do research for now but I may rejoin
Hello, could anyone direct me into making a find a dm post? I'm not sure if I need to hit a mod up or whatnot
Go to #find-a-game
Use the bot command as detailed in #find-a-game
oh ok, I suck with bots lol ok this will be fun lol
ok one more question, do I just enter the command and it prompts me to a fillout sheet?
Yes
I believe so, I’ve never used it myself
ok sweet,thanks so much!
Hello! I have a question regarding multi classing and the proficiency bonus
Let's say my total level is 5 but I am level 3 in one class and level 2 in another. Would my proficiency bonus be +2 or +3?
(Do I have to get to level 5 in a single class to get the higher prof. bonus?)
Ohhh! Thank you so much! :)
I learned how to play dnd just yesterday and will be having my fidst session this saturday any tips i need?
Have fun don’t take mistakes to seriously, learn you characters abilities
and don't be afraid to ask your DM questions if you're unsure about anything
will you play a oneshot or join a campaign?
Also get comfortable with your character sheet! Find out where things are on there, where to klick for rolling checks and saves, where your actions and bonus actions are.
Will be joining a campaign
you already made your character or will there be a session 0 for character creation?
- ask the others what classes they will play. Ideally everyone in party has their strenght and covers the others weaknesses. It will be weird if there is someone else in the group with a similar build and you have to compete each time who gets to do things you both are good at
-
ask the DM about cities and factions in the world. Think up a story where your char hails from and family and friends they have. Things they can tell stories about at a campfire in the woods.
-
Think of a motivation why your char left home. Why do they willingly venture forth into danger. What is so important to them they are willing to go on this quest with strangers just to achieve it
Hello! Just a quick question, I'm confuzzled. For a campaign, do we only use the DnD Beyond app to play? Or is there any other app or website I'd need?
Everyone created their characters and our strengths cover our weaknesses pretty well and there will be a session 0 for how the party gets to meet eachother
Thank you i will keep that in mind
there are many ways to play. Will you be DMing or are you a player.
What software is used is usually DMs choice
feel free to share your char idea in pm with me if you want an opinion
I'm a player! I just finished reading the basics and made a character.
then ask your DM. They will be able to tell you what you need
Ohh okay, thank you!

Thank you
it's gonna be pretty obvious this question has been asked before buuuuuuut
i dont own the PHB or any books for that matter but my group is finally a bit more committed so i need to buy one lol. we run our campaigns on roll20, i've never used d&d beyond as DM and all our session are online. do i buy the PHB physically, on D&DBeyond or Roll20? theres just too many option i cant cope 🤓
No one here can answer that question, but we can answer questions about what the different options offer you
The roll20 compendium integrates with their VTT system, meaning you can use the options in their character sheet system. However, it doesn't have the best user experience for the compendium if you just want to read the book digitally
D&D Beyond has a better compendium (IMO) with an app that allows you to read content you have access to offline. However, it doesn't have a VTT nor does it integrate with any third party VTTs. Also you require a device, such as phone, tablet, or laptop if you want to use DDB at the table rather than online
Physical books can be used anywhere and don't require additional devices or power to use. However, you don't get any automation or search features
I tend to prioritise buying the DDB version of a book first, then the physical. I use roll20, but only for the VTT and will have DDB open in another tab
thankyou - the amount of different options there are is sort of overwhelming coming into it with a new perspective, especially when they all do cost quite a bit for the same content in each one. i'm just desperate to not get too much into the rush of buying everything all at once and committing financial suicide (but like 40k). what i'll do then is get the book on DNDBeyond and just learn to use it like a normal person
thanks again xoxox
You don't need to buy the PHB straight away, a lot of the content found across the PHB, MM, and DMG is found in the free Basic Rules
You can check out the Basic Rules here on D&D Beyond if you want an idea of how the books there are generally laid out.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
i mean tbf i have the physical starter set & lost mines so i do have alot of stuff to go off for a while. thankyou everyone for advice. legends all of you
I have a noob question. How experienced should you be before you don't consider yourself a newbie and feel comfortable to join DND campaigns not considered 'beginner friendly'? I've started a campaign and it should be going for a few months so would you say that after this I should be experienced enough for any campaign not especially deemed hardcore?
I don’t think there’s really a definitive answer to that one… 😅
But I’d say if you can be shown a game feature you’ve never seen and understand how it works just by reading it (because you already understand the pieces that make it), then you’re probably in good shape.
As a random example:
As a bonus action, you gain a flying speed of 10 feet and can hover. This effect lasts for 1 minute or until you are incapacitated.
You can use this feature a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.
You’d need to know how bonus actions work, how to use a flying speed and how that’s effected by hover, how many rounds are in a minute, what incapacitated means, how your proficiency bonus works (and what yours is), and what a long rest is.
To be totally honest, a lot of campaigns that don’t say “beginner friendly” probably still are. Most people don’t mind answering a question or two about how game mechanics work as you play. But I agree with Spam. The general bar to cross, in my opinion, would be the ability to understand most of the base rules and game mechanics, plus all of your own characters rules and game mechanics.
But no one needs to know everything. If you’re just getting started, I’d focus more on learning where to find the answers than on internalizing the answers themselves.
But also keep in mind that, when actually playing the game, it’s the DMs job to manage most of the rules. You are expected to be responsable for your own character, but not the rest of the game. It’s very helpful if you know the base rules, because then you know what to expect from game mechanics, or what different actions you might do, but don’t try to overrule or contradict your DM.
Yeah, at a bare minimum, I’d recommend knowing these common terms, what to do on your turn, and how your character’s own abilities work.
Wasn’t there a rule set for projectile penetration of different materials?
Not for fifth edition, at least.
Damn. There’s a material hardness one though, right? Wood, iron, adamantine etc.
so then um im new to dnd may i have some pointers to how this thing work? Cause it seems so interesting and fun id like to know more abt it as a player cause i doubt i can be a Dungeon master haha
Like may i know the rules of the game?
And may i also know how each of the classes even work?
Im really open and willing to learn if some one would gimme their time to teach me
Have you read the basic rules?
Nope im literally a newborn baby for dnd xD
never touched it nor heard much abt it till reccently and got me interested
I also have friends who plays it but irl so cant really join them cause internet friends haha
An object’s armor class depends on the material that composes it.

@fresh fable what does the hit points and hit dice mean qwq
"Your character’s hit points define how tough your character is in combat and other dangerous situations. Your hit points are determined by your Hit Dice (short for Hit Point Dice).
At 1st level, your character has 1 Hit Die, and the die type is determined by your class. You start with hit points equal to the highest roll of that die, as indicated in your class description. (You also add your Constitution modifier, which you’ll determine in step 3.) This is also your hit point maximum.
Record your character’s hit points on your character sheet. Also record the type of Hit Die your character uses and the number of Hit Dice you have. After you rest, you can spend Hit Dice to regain hit points (see “Resting” in the Adventuring section)."
Here's an easy explanation. Your Hit Points are a number that represents how healthy you are, or how long before you get knocked out in battle.
If you have 10 hit points at maximum and someone slashes you with a sword, they might deal 5 damage. At that point, your 10 hit points would reduce to 5. You might not survive another hit like that without going unconscious!
Hit dice are a resource used to heal you when you take smaller rests. Depending on your class, your hit dice could be smaller or bigger.
So if i were a fighter would i have a bigger one?
On the higher side of things, yes! Fighters have a ten sided dice (or d10) as their hit dice. On a rest and with some luck, you could heal 10 whole hit points!
can i over heal? like if i have 5 and i roll a 10 so would i have more or would i just hit my max which is 10?
Nope! It would cap out at your maximum. If you only took 1 damage in a fight, it might not be worth it to heal!
Got ya!
There is a thing called temporary hit points which could let you exceed your maximum.
Hm i see but im guessing thats up to the DM?
No, they usually come from class features or spells.
ohhh i see i see
ah i see
For example:
Starting at 1st level, when you reduce a hostile creature to 0 hit points, you gain temporary hit points equal to your Charisma modifier + your warlock level (minimum of 1).
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/warlock#TheFiend
Ah theres soo many rules and stuff my brains over heating
I cant do this in one sitting so ill take my time with and i see
using modifyers with the class to have some more got it
You don't need to do it in one sitting, take your time
yea yea i know, but im just soo excited. My friends told me im a good artist and i should get into dnd stuff cause it would gimme new ideas for drawing!
They also said it would be more fun to draw a character when i made a nice connection with them too so yea!
There's no point burning yourself out at the beginning
Haha true
im just too excited when it comes to getting more creative ideas

oh hey same here im also new
Hello, could someone please explain how time passes? I can't seem to find much info in the PHB. For example, a spellcasting time, if it says 5 minutes, is that 5 minutes irl? Or do I work that out in the game world?
Cheers :)
Time passes as fast or as slow as the story needs.
(Which is ultimately up to the DM.)
So it's not bound by any rules or anything?
Nope
Thanks :)
At the slowest end of the scale is initiative, where everything is tracked in six-second rounds and each person gets a turn.
The faster end can skip days, weeks, millennia... whatever the story needs.
So after each person has taken their turn, that's a round right? 6 seconds
Yep
Cool, thank you very much
Every person get six seconds, but it's all the same six seconds.
Even though they're taking turns.
Yeah I get it now, just took a little bit to click haha
Outside of combat your DM could literally say "Three days later, and you finally hear from Beigarth, who has returned from his hunt." And just like that it's been three days
Oh also, if I'm able to take an opportunity attack, that counts as my reaction for my next turn, right?
Or current one, if I haven't used it yet
You regain your reaction when you start your turn.
Okay thanks
Are West Marches Campaigns/Servers a decent starting place for beginners? Im worried being a newcomer might be frowned upon as it may slow things down a little.
I don't know if it's necessarily better or worse as a starting place. Being new to it means, regardless of what type of game you're playing, things will go more slowly because you're adjusting. As long as the other folks at the table are okay with it, you shouldn't worry.
If you're transparent about your newness (and you've done your best at learning as much as you're able outside the game), then folks who invite you to play probably won't be put out.
Thanks for the advice! i guess ill just try to jump in and see how it goes
What are West march campaigns?
Westmarch is a style of play that commonly is run on a separate Discord server (or similar service). These types of games are run in the same universe and the events of one group of adventurers can impact those of another. Groups and DMs may change regularly. They're ideal for pick-up games or if you want to be part of a bigger, more interwoven narrative. Think of them a little bit like an "MMO" for tabletop games.
Ohhhhhh. Thanks.
okay so might be a weird question, but trying to learn the rules before i play a game been making a bunch of notes to help myself but I'm not understanding certain things, long story short could someone give me the easiest explanation of passive checks, ex. when i look online "1st-level character (with a proficiency bonus of +2) has a Wisdom of 15 (a +2 modifier) and proficiency in Perception, he or she has a passive Wisdom (Perception) of 14." but i really dont understand how 15 + 2 equals 14 ? or am i missing something ? if anyone can help my confused mind i would greatly appreciate it
Wisdom 15 gives a +2 modifier.
Proficiency Bonus at level 1 gives a +2 modifier.
Passive Perception is a based 10 + Proficiency Bonus + Wisdom modifier = 14
Passive Perception is calculated by 10+Wisdom bonus+proficiency bonus (if you're proficient in Perception). So 10+2+2=14.
omg ive been looking this up all morning thank you so much ! way easier than i thought, the way the were explaining it had me lost.
Passive skills are what your DM uses without asking the players to roll. This is often used in cases such as the PCs's Passive Perception versus enemies' Stealth check. The DM doesn't tell the players this (otherwise it would defeat the point of monsters being stealthed if the players know there are hidden monsters about).
Hey I have a question. I just started reading the rules for dragons of storm wreck isle, and it says when it’s talking about the dice, that you can roll a zero. But I don’t see a zero on the dice. how do you roll it?
Your "roll" on an ability check, saving throw, or attack roll is the number on the dice plus your modifer for the ability score used for that roll. If you have a negative modifier, when you "add" it to the number on the dice, it would be subtracted
Oh, I see. That makes more sense then what the instructions said. Thanks!
If you rolling for a Stealth check (and not proficient in Stealth) and you roll a 1 on a d20 with a 8 Dexterity, that's a -1 modifier. That means your final value is a 0.
so if you have to make an Intelligence Check, and you have an 8 or 9 Intelligence score, that would give you a -1 modifer, so you subtract 1 from the number on the dice. A nat 1 would be "you rolled a 0"
Thanks for being so helpful guys
Our pleasure
👍 I hope I can learn a lot in the future about this game.😅

Ok, I will. Anything that helps!
So first time playing an armorer artificer and using the gaurdian armor option, only have scale mail and Dm is alowing one uncommon magic item is adamantine plate a good idea
Sure. That saves you 1500 gp for plate armour and you get immunity to crits.
Ok
It’s a one shot starting at level 5 and the starting gold isn’t even enough to buy plate

but on dim light the perception would be -5, in blindsight would the character throw a normal dice for perception, or it would be -5
Example: A character is currently blind in combat and it has blindsight, he's using his senses to percieve his surroundings, and he has moved near a trap.
The trap is inside his blindsight range, how would he roll for perception in this case? As if it was in Bright, Dim or Darkness?
So, lets clarify something before I answer this question
What affects your perception checks is Obscurement, not lighting. Lighting is the most common way things can be obscured, but that's not what's actually changing the roll
If something is in Dim Light, you treat it as being Lightly Obscured
If something is in Darkness, you treat it as being Heavily Obscured
If something is Lightly Obscured, you make perception checks that rely on sight at disadvantage
If something is Heavily Obscured, you are treated as having the blinded condition while trying to see it
Blindsight does not rely on sight, which means it is immune to the effects of Lightly Obscured and Heavily Obscured, so you would make your perception check with a normal roll, the same way you would as if it was in Bright Light, but that's not what's really happening
(This is starting to veer into complicated rules territory, and might be more fit for #dnd-rules)
I tried directing the conversation there when I replied to them last night, yeah

You'll be wanting to look at the Find a Game section, then.
ik but i got confused with all the text lol
Hi! I’ve never played before and recently made a character and have been delving into some of dnd beyond’s resources along with listening to the stinky dragon pod and learning about dnd, slight problem, I don’t actually have anyone to play with. How can I find parties open to new noob players?
Welcome! This server has some recources for finding a game. If you browse through the public LFG posts, you can try to find one that someone has tagged as "beginner friendly" or "new players welcome" or something like that. Also, feel free to make your own post, so DM's can reach out to you, if they think you are a good fit for their game. You can find instructions for how to do both written up in the #find-a-game channel
Not sure if this belongs here or in rules, but I’m a new comer to dnd, are there any rules to the type or style of dice you use ? I’ve seen some that are metal and have kind of like points on them to the standard dice
Use whatever dice you want
As long as it has the correct number of sides, you can use whatever you want.
hey there! dnd has always been a thing I've wanted to get into, and after getting bg3 and making a character there, I've been pushed over my limit to finally attempt to try and find a campaign
problem is, i have no idea where to start. any tips?
I would recommend thinking about durability and LEGIBILITY
start by reading these materials

how do you start the campain
Oh boy you need to scroll up and read the material linked directly above
i think i dont understand
Are you trying to become a DM? I would recommend heading over to #dm-discussion to ask for advice.
k
They wanted to start a campaign so I assumed they wanted to become a DM.
They said “the” campaign which leads me to suspect otherwise
In the future it's okay to ask them for clarification before sending them to a different channel.
Hi I’m a newcomer to D&D and was wondering if I’m looking for a game, do I need to use DDB for online stuff or can I still use paper sheets for online?
You use whatever the group and DM decides should be used (although you can provide your own thoughts and opinions on it and influence what does bget used).
See https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/750-new-players-guide-how-to-play-d-d-online for more information
I see, do I need to unlock anything for certain things from books that I already have physically in dnd beyond?
If you want to sue the materials of the books inside of DnDBeyond's tools and services, yes you need to own the book on DnDBeyond, or use the homebrew tools to recreate it for personal use (do not publish it), or be in a DnDBeyond campaign with Content Sharing enabled and someone in that campaign owns the DnDBeyond version of the book so it's shared among the group.
Additionally you can buy individual items, races, classes, and spells through DnDBeyond's marketplace - go to the book in the marketplace and scroll down to find the individual items you can purchase.
Does homebrewing content from the book also apply to making races, items etc. I want to use too?
Yes - everything but core classes (subclasses are fine, but custom homebrewed classes are not possible at this time) and mundane items (again not possible at this time) can be homebrewed.
that said many folks don't like DnDBeyond's homebrew system and decide spending 1.99 USD or so to just buy the individual thing they need is much more cost effective use of their time
Could someone DM me to hop on call and try to explain dnd to me, who wants to get to play?
I can't - not enough bandwidth to teach folks D&D one on one. What I would recommend is checking the pinned resources in the channel: #dnd-newcomers message
Check those resources out, and if you have any specific questions, feel free to ask here or in an approrpiate channel (see id:browse to see all the possible channels).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.

How do I join a campaign? I would use dnd beyond, and I wouldn't wanna spend money on it, as I'm not sure I will like it.
After you read the rules check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
D&D Beyond is just a site for character sheets and digital books. You don't need to spend any money on the game when you're starting out because the Basic Rules are free and has plenty enough to get you started.
Hey, i want to learn how to play and create a player, what do you recommend?

I recommend reading that
Thanks
It looks like my small city has a few places to meet up for DnD stuff. I'm nervous. I'm worried if I go during a meeting time, nobody will show up XD
call and ask when the games start, show up early
Hi, I have never played DND before but want to get into it. Are there any beginner games I can sit in on and learn? Or any resources.
See the ?new message a few lines up!
You could also find plenty of games to watch on YouTube and Twitch.
Thanks
once i've read up, is it alright when people hold games here to ask just to sit in so i have some real life experience before actually joining?
watch live streams on youtube or twitch
ok sure thanks
i only played dnd once with friends and i wanna start a session with my cousins and i got the essentials kit and im gonna be dm but im struggling how to understand the adventure book and how to properly do transitions. do you guys have any tips?
and i never been dm ever
What kind of transitions do you mean?
Transitions as in what? Continuing through the story?
So do you mean something like moving from point A to point B?
By book you mean the Essentials kit right?
Have you read the book just to understand its contents?
yes but im slow myself 🥲
That's really step one: it'll give you a sense of the locations, NPCs, and quests the game contains. Don't worry about knowing what to do with the info yet.
Here's a good video for running published adventures: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HtycBDDzeJI
And here's a whole playlist about running Icespire Peak: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL1lMCvJ_l52VEran4ofJScYjEPYoIaFKU
My tips are largely covered in there: read and make notes about the adventure, use other resources to help shore up your understanding, and recognize you will make mistakes, so don't worry about avoiding them.
alr thank you so much i really appreciate😁
hey, im trying to figure out how to install d&d on my pc
This server is primarily focused on the tabletop role-playing game, so there's nothing to install on your PC necessarily.
Again - this is for the table top game
