Hi im new and i am currently creating my first character, i just wanted to know if anyone could tell me where i could make/find a goood profile picture for my character. I am using DnD beyond
thanks, Imma look into heroforge rn
My go to is usually Pinterest - search your preferred class & race with dnd/fantasy art, outside of that AI can be good for getting a picture closest to your own ideas for what your character feels like! I usually use AI as a starting point to develop my character art ideas!
Baldur's Gate 3 is also a good character creator for D&D, funnily enough 😄
hiiiii : D
hello
how are you?
Hello
Hi
How are y'all
I'm doing good! Hope you are too?
Just join here my online campaign will end soon and am looking for a new one

Hello! I am new here and I'd love to learn more about D&D through playing, and I'd love to start as a DM :3 Is anyone up to helping me learn? 🥹
I started learning 5e as a DM too, it's the quickest crash course as long as you have the right players/support!!
I hope to find people willing to help me learn tbh :/ I've been really wanting to get into D&D because of Critical Role and I really want to experience the fun and roleplaying there 😄
I get that!! That's why I started too, then I stayed for all the crazy friends I made and the stories we created! Not every game will work, but it's always worth trying!!!
Well, I will try to find people hehe
I am a newcomer as well. Need like a tutorial campaign for variant human wizard sage spellcasters both to get a feel for the character and the dnd environment overall
I’ve just binged about the first 14 episodes of campaign 1 in critical role but then the Dragonborn guy just made me quit so I started the second one and am about 4 episodes deep and am really interested in playing if you want new players @worthy silo I would love to play
Hell yeah! I just need to binge watch some episodes as well cause I literally know 0% of D&D xD
I know the very very basics but that’s about it
?new - you can start your journey here!

Well, if we start a game, we'll need about 4 more people haha
Well I'm glad to find out I'm not the only new guy here
Yeah, that guy is beyond problematic! And critical role (whilst fantastic) can be difficult to follow, but I think can give great inspiration for campaigns and/or characters!
I thought being the DM was the worst role for newcomers?
It involves some extra steps and responsibility, but it’s absolutely doable. Plenty of people have started that way.
Not for me, that's crazy intimidating
I found being DM the fastest way to learn the rules!! If you know how to run the game it's the best way to then play within the rules of the game! (Or how to best work around the rules!!)
Reading through one of the premades it didn't seem obvious what happens if you fail to pass dice checks. Like, it's just game over? You'd think there'd be an alternate path if you fail the check but the one i read had the checks absolutely integral to the continuation of the campaign
That’s not common, so it might have been poorly written/designed. Odds are good a DM running such a thing would improvise around it or not even call for a check in the first place.
But that’s getting beyond the scope of this channel.
That would be great!!
I have experience creating universes and writing, and I have some crazy imagination and creativeness so I think this would be a good role for me to start with ehehe
Go for it!
@worthy silo do you think text will be and option? Or is it gonna be just voice?
I'm fine with both, but I do think voice would be more comfortable and into it :3
You should take any organizing talk to private messages, to keep the channel clear for newcomer questions and such.
Thank you!
Darn I would really want to voice but I’m in a dorm room and don’t wanna disturb my roommates
Okay! I can add everyone that wants to play and create a separate server if you'd like?
Or do you recommend a website or something to play on instead?
That's fine then :3 We can try text only then :3
No no by all means try both I bet that would work
okay 😄
I'd be interested in joining, I already have a character made but I've never played an actual campaign
Same pm I wanna here about your character
I'd love to join a new campaign if you still need players!
I haven't exactly played myself since I'm still very new, but for DM's I suppose they're just kind of like writers, right?
There’s definitely some overlap with writing, but there’s also lots of game design and improv involved too.
Awesome! Newcomers trying out the first time
On the spot, yes. Improv and consistency are skills DM's are encouraged to train before committing to the role.
Hell yeah! How should we gather all together to talk through everything?
Which is honestly why I'm personally getting into the game
I'm very much used to creating and writing, so I am excited hehe
@worthy silo I sent u a separate discord for the campaign we can use
I'm in
I sent you a pm with the link :3
you guys looking got space?
I’ve played in 2 campaigns but had to let them go cause I just moved
Hi
what’s up
Hi
Im in as well
Newcomer question. Does one find a campaign then design the character to fit that campaign, or design the character then find the campaign
former
I never played dnd before. I don’t know how to play. Can someone help me.
Same here.
Ok
@wintry bone I sent you a pm

what is a spell casting modifier?
Your Spellcasting Ability is determined by which base ability your character uses to power their spells. For example, Sorcerers get their spellcasting power from their Charisma, so their Spellcasting Ability is Charisma.
Your Spellcasting Ability modifier is a number taken from the ability used to power the spells. So for a Sorcerer, their Spellcasting Ability modifier is the same as their Charisma modifier found on the first page of the character sheet.
Say you’re playing a druid. They use Wisdom as their spellcasting stat. So whatever your bonus in Wisdom is (anywhere between -5 and +5), that’s your spellcasting modifier.
ah, so depending on my class I should put my highest/very high number on it(focusing VERY HARD on spells on my first character)
That’s what many folks do.
thanks.
what are the main differences between bard, cleric, sorcerer and wizard? im inbetween these 4
im playing with the idea of a passive playstyle, buffing and healing my teammates whilst still being able to deal my own damage
i have literally only selected my race
Bards and Sorcerers are both Charisma based characters. Bards are more support and utility - literally jack of all trades. Sorcerers are innate talented spellcasters. For both, you select from a list of spells and can only use those ones.
Wizards are Intelligence based and can learn many spells. From the spells they know they can prepare a set every day based on their level and intelligence modifier.
Clerics are Divine spellcasters that are Wisdom based. They can select and prepare spells from a set list each day. Clerics traditionally follow a god but it can depend on the character.
So as wizard or sorcerer at the start of the day I select my spells(within current level+cantrips) and have them for the day ready to use?
Only wizards
im going to knock out clerics and narrow it down to just bard, sorcerer or wizard
Sorcerers are like bards
ah
You choose your spells and you can only change them when you level up
so if i level up i can even change the spells i already chose?
Also wizards you only select the levelled spells at the start of the day, cantrips work like normal for wizards iirc
Only one spell, not including any new spells you might gain
so when i level up, i pick my spells for the new level( if i unlocked one) and can change one that i already have?
Yep
ah, thanks
how can I find campaigns to join on here
@wintry bone my group is starting one would u like to join?
yeah bro thanks
OK, i have decided to be a sorcerer
will probs come back asking about sublcasses if they exist for sorcerer
Every class has subclasses
ah thanks
Sorcerers pick their’s at level 1
so i can make my char while already having my subclass? nice
Yes
How would I go about finding players to start a campaign with me?
Can i be a goblin paladin who worships nilbog?

@strange cloud ^
No reason why not
Keep in mind tho that your power doesn’t come from the worship of that god
well it's not listed as one of the deities
That’s just part of your character
Well it would be up to your dm’s world
If that god exists
i cant find them on dnd beyond or players handbook? what are the subclasses for sorcerer?
PHB has two sorc subclasses: draconic bloodline and wild magic
Theyre in the sorcerer section called sorcerous origins
i saw them but i honestly didnt even realise that they are subclasses
They are
Each class will have a different term for it. Subclass generically describes the specialized path you take in your class that provides additional features
get in line
Yeah, DND is confusing I mean there’s so many classes and abilities, but that’s the fun part of it

I'm super new to DnD so please bear with me.
I don't understand HP, leather armor, and AC in this game. Lets say I have a human fighter with 12 HP and 14 AC (3 Dex + leather armor). If I take 15 damage, does that mean I lose my armor and take 1 point off HP? And my AC drops to 3 because I broke my leather armor?
Like I said I'm super new, just curious how that all works.
Personally, either! I have some characters I made that I’m looking to put into a game. And others I’ve made for the game! It’s all preference:))
AC just means what they have to roll to hit you! Never leaves. Nothing breaks normally
Like an AC of 17 means if I roll a 16 it misses you and doesn’t hurt you
That roll does include bonuses/penalties, so it's not just the number on the die, usually.
^
Thank you!
So let’s say I have a weapon that does a 1d4+2 damage. Your AC is 14 and your max HP is 12. I roll a 16 to hit.
That means. I hit you, then I roll my 1d4
Let’s say I get a 3, then I add my 2. That’s 5
Then take your HP-5 that’s 7 left over hit points.
Yep! If you have any other questions I’m always here to help! :)) dnd is about creativity, have fun with it!
Thank you very much!
I understand u didnt understand ac but hit points really should be simple enough
When attempting to use the character builder, how do I get other races such s haregorn and tortle?
I hope I explained that well <33
Are you using dnd beyond?
Just use a book and paper
@left kelp I was using their character builder yes
If you're using D&D Beyond, you need to buy the races themselves, the books that contain those races, or have someone with access to that material share content with you.
If you are, you’ll have to own the races by either finding them or buying them. Some are free some are not. Then it will be in your books
Couldn’t explain better myself
Oh okay. Thanks!
Glad to help! ❤️
ah thanks, are there any downsides to taking a subclass? i understand that some are better than others, but are there any downsides/nerfs or anything for taking a subclass?
Nope
perfect
And you have to take a subclass
Clockwork soul, divine soul, and abberant mind are all really good
theres no absolutely terrible option tho
ah, thank you for helping me make my first character!
Hey! Does anyone know how to find a group here that’s willing to teach a brand new player?
You can search for one in looking for players or ask around
Check out #find-a-game
May I dm you?
Or have you already found one more?
Send me one 👍
wait instead of just joining a group would it b better to join a group of all new players ?
That depends if you can find a DM who will DM to a group of new players.
Hey everyone! I’m completely new to dnd and looking to make some friends!! If you live in cali too please let me know!! I wanna find some friends to play with!! I’ve never played before but I’ve wanting to for a while
heyy, just wondering if anyone would be down to start a group, im pretty new to dnd but am really intrested in playing.

So on a scale of 1-10 how hard is dnd to play for a newcomer if your playing by the rules?
can you cast the same cantrip twice during your turn?
not unless you have the ability to attack multiple times
Even then you can’t
Casting a cantrip is the “cast a spell” action not the “attack” action
The only way is if you have quickened spell metamagic
Learning the rules can be a little tricky but it’s not too bad
You can cast two different cantrips, assuming one is an action and the other is a bonus action right?
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/spellcasting#BonusAction
A spell cast with a bonus action is especially swift. You must use a bonus action on your turn to cast the spell, provided that you haven't already taken a bonus action this turn. You can't cast another spell during the same turn, except for a cantrip with a casting time of 1 action.
Yes
You can’t cast two different levelled spells tho
One has to be a cantrip with a casting time with an action.
The other has to be a spell of a casting time of a bonus action.
You could do cantrip, cantrip I’m pretty sure
oh thanks good to know! - still figuring out certain action economy things lol
Bladesinger wizard gives you extra attack with the ability to substitute one of the attacks for a cantrip, but only one of them iirc
If my friend wanted to get into dnd and have everything they could possibly need to know to start, would all they need be the players handbook, tashas cauldron of everything, xanathars guide to everything, monsters of the multiverse (for races)?
Or is there any more content that they should get for reading up on everything
Personally, and this is just my opinion, the player's handbook is a great place to start for someone who doesn't mind a lot at once to digest without taking on the entire anthology of 5e content.
TCOE, XGTE, and mpmm are more if you really get into it
Would there be any more books than those for people who wanna really get into it?
Stick with the Basic Rules for now if you're just getting started.
The Player's Handbook is the first book you should get.
Everything else are supplements and optional based on the DM's choice.
But if your friends wants to spend a hundred dollars before actually playing, that's their money to spend... /shrug
Oh they've played before using the free pdf by wotc
And wanna fully commit basically
Should've mentioned that
Phb first then
And what would come after the phb
PHB, Tasha's, and Xanathar's
Does purchasing books on dnd beyond digitally give access to the full books with pictures n stuff? Basically just a pdf version of the original books
Yep
Would yall recommend for them to buy it physically on amazon for slightly cheaper than dnd beyond? Or is dnd beyond better
If you use ddb buy them on ddb
Yeah they don't use ddb and play irl but don't know wjats the better option cause they're both basically the same cost
Physical then
hi
Hi
They asked if they should get a nice set of dice like something off of etsy for their character since they really like their character, or should they get some bulk dice as they're a summoner off of Amazon or something
Why not both. Become the dice goblin
hi i'm new to the dnd space and i watched a lot of content about it and also some things on how to play and so on. now how can i find a game/party or set one up for my own

Is a willing creature someone who verbally agrees to be apart of the spell?
They don't need to consent verbally.
You may want to roleplay it as a verbal agreement though.
ye
What does it mean then
can someone help i can't find a DM for my party and i'm getting some hesitation about if i wanna play or not because it is so hard i think
How long you been looking?
2 months but i'm new and wanted to start as quicly as possible to learn the game and have some fun time because i have a party we are just looking for a DM and the right time to play
Have you though about running some one shots whilst waiting to find a DM if you’ve got a group you could each take turns
If you can tell a story and follow the basic rules you can DM. One shots are short 2-4 hour self contained games
i don't know all the basic rules but i also want to be a player first because i think i'm not good enough as a DM
See if someone else in the group would run one until you can find a main DM
Don’t just look here for games https://drive.google.com/file/d/1fqCm4tA5Y_WxlqgryUM_iaz3l7B3zZ0m/view good guide to finding games online (credit iamrazorwing)
Spells that say “must make a saving throw” what number are they supposed to hit
Your spell save DC 8+prof+spell casting mod
so you are telling me until we find a main DM I can be the DM?
Are you trying to find irl DM or online DM
Yes or one of the other players you can find oneshots cheap/free on dndbeyond and Dmsguild
online
Do you use dc on games or some sort of vtt?
we haven't played yet so we are open for everything but we want to use discord vc to talk
Yeah thats probably the best way, also using discord in generally. We use fantasy grounds and discord.
but idk how a vtt workst or how to use it that is the problem i'm not experienced enough to be a DM
Well usually each vtt system has their own search system to find dm's and players.
okay so I already had Starter Set but I also bought Essentials Kit and compared both boxed sets from similar ones from this one wargame with Starter Set being Beginners Box and Essentials being like main boxed set from that one
Hey im really new to the game. I havent played a game yet im looking to play my first game. I dont know a lot i did do some research on the basic rules. No one near me plays it so im here to look for an online beginner friendly game.
i would recommend looking at a local game store
you know I was thinking something since I really like angels in MtG. can you play Celestial in DnD?
Aasimar
ah Aasimar are that then
If u got no irl people who you know that play the game, how do you guys recommend starting? Or better said through what app/platform/
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1fqCm4tA5Y_WxlqgryUM_iaz3l7B3zZ0m/view good guide to finding games online (credit iamrazorwing)
We have #find-a-game for here
https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Aasimar bit of lore for you
okay thanks
based on what I read from that I might eventually go with aasimar paladin
If you polymorph into a beholder I can do three random rays in one turn?
Fair enough, a very fitting combo
It's worth building your character, but also bear in mind that when you find a game, the DM might not want players to be Aasimar. Finish that character off, but maybe make a backup with a race from the Basic Rules/Player Handbook.
Even if you can't use that character, it's always nice to have a collection of character sheets for other campaigns or one shots
okay I keep that in mind
. The new form can be any beast
Beholder's are not beasts, so you can't polymorph into one.
i live in India theres no local board/tabletop game store
the 2 cafe/board game places nearby that exist dont have dnd
only true polymorph (a 9th level spell) would allow you to become a beholder
True Polymorph can be used, if your level is greater than or equal to the Beholder's CR.
At that point, you do just get all the stats, so yes you would have the eye beams etc.
from what I have seen polymorphing into owlbear seems to be something that might depend from DM
They're a monstrosity, so yeah would need some clearing from the DM
That's usually for Wild Shape, a Druid feature. RAW, Owlbears aren't meant to be allowed, because they don't count as beasts, but a lot of DM's House Rule that they are beasty enough. Also, with the movie coming out and the new ruleset in development, there's a move towards permitting it in future versions
ah I see
True polymorph
The main thing is that an Owlbear's statblock doesn't really have any features that wouldn't fit on a Beast of equal CR. Compare that to other animal-esque non-beasts, like the Displacer Beast or Blink Dog, which have exotic or magical abilities.
Yeah I reckon they'll change them to be beasts in the next edition
Yes, and you can. Though, in order to accomplish that, you would have to be at least around a level 17 wizard, and turning into a Beholder would probably be a downgrade.
well druid ||in DnD movie did change into owlbear||
Yes, as I referenced - but she was noted as a bit of a prodigy. She also wild shaped many more times than usual. Her official stat block notes these as special abilities.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/tg/thieves-gallery#Doric
If you turn into a giant octopus on land will they automatically die because they can’t breathe?
Hold Breath: While out of water, the octopus can hold its breath for 1 hour.
The same isn't true of a Giant Shark:
Water Breathing. The shark can breathe only underwater.
Giant octopus says that too
Yes, I copied that from the Giant Octopus stat block because you were asking about it.
And wouldn’t holding breathe mean they’d have to be in water and then hold in their breathe
Oh so you are asking whether you can turn into an octopus "holding breath", or if you have to start in water.
It would be up to the DM, but that would be a fairly unusual ruling to make you do that.
I don't think there's a specific statement, but I think the most straightforward ruling would be that you can spawn holding your breath, whether you are a water breather spawning on land or an air breather spawning underwater
technically, the Wild Shape rules don't even say that you adopt the breathing limitations of the animal, you only gain abilities. So, you can read that as being an amphibious shark. But again, these are DM decisions to make.
I don't know, I don't see any "legal" difference between Blood Frenzy and Water Breathing there. They're in the same untitled section, treated as abilities.
you definitely lose abilities in wildshape. like darkvision for example
hey guys, complete newbie here to the game. found it interesting so i want to learn more about it. would anyone be happy to tell me more about it please? i’ve done a bit of research online but it seems so confusing. thank you 🙂

Game is basically make a character, Roleplay them going in an adventure with friends, if you want to do something the DM may ask you to roll a dice to see if you succeed, go fight monsters and collect the loot back home for tea and medals
heyy im completely new to DND, ive never played before and i wanna get started but none of my friends play and the people ik that do play live so far away from me, but i really wanna get into it!!
you can join my campaign
would i be able to join as well please
it depents on your timezones and stuff

how can i find a dm i am discouraged by not finding a dm i posted here no one replied so
i'm quiting this game if i have to but i don't want to
dont give up keep looking
i'm looking for 2 freaking months
Are you only looking here? I did link you a huge list of other places to look
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1fqCm4tA5Y_WxlqgryUM_iaz3l7B3zZ0m/view good guide to finding games online (credit iamrazorwing)
i did but we'll see about it
Am sorry,i feel ya,ive been searching a game for now 5 years, finally found one thought! But dnd online is a really competitive environement, you have about 20 players per dm,and most dms run groups of 5,since they have a giant pool of players to choose from, they will choose the best ones they can find
but i'm new and i want to learn you know
Same
but without a DM it is difficult
and without players from your timezone to play with it is also difficult
you know what i mean?
Welp dosent really matter,as a dm,i can tell you that our perspective is mesed up,we get about 20private messages a day asking to get in our games
Have you put an ad in #750812887697588356 ?

The only absolutely reliable way to find a DM is to become a DM, and run an adventure like Lost Mine of Phandelver, which acts as a tutorial for you.
does someone know any tipps that can help me find a champaign name?
i´m a newcomer and currently trying to become a dm and set um a champaign but i cant think of a name for it xD
Honestly most of them are just 2 awesome sounding words, but if yours have any traits or like a main part of the story then that can be in the name
I'm no professional but I feel like playing into the theme and pulling from there could work
Have you run an adventure before? There normal based on the location or something the party has to do
funny but true
thats a good idea thanks
no it would be my first adventure and thanks for the tips
Just whatever sounds cool
The adjective of proper noun.
that'd be great!! thank u!!
I sensed you a dm
i just replied thank u!!
greetings
How do you play D&D on Discord?
Depends
I use Discord for communication and use roll20 for playing
Roll20 is a website they had everything you need for playing
i normally use avrae
Thanks!
DnDebyond owns Avrae and we have #ddb-avrae-commands if you need to test the commands. That said it would be best to just set up your own server and invite Avrae there and run commands there.
Also for more tips on how to run D&D online check out https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/750-new-players-guide-how-to-play-d-d-online
thank you good sir
wsp guys
hi winter
Hello
Hi
If any of you guys need help to get started or anything just ask here and someone will help
How do I join a campaign
yeah how do i join a campaighn
I feel like that’s dumb but like I can’t type in the thingy
#find-a-game has all you need for finding games
thats a good question
I assume you both want to find a campaign as players so #looking-for-players is your best bet for that
#750812887697588356 also works but in my experience you're more likely to find a game in the former
Can someone please teach me how to play dnd with a sample run

I heard theres a new subclass for bard used for dancing instead of using music for spells
But haven’t found anything on dnd beyond
It’s from one of the recent playtest documents and as such isn’t integrated on D&D Beyond until (and if) it becomes official.
Oh because I can’t find it
If it’s possible anyone know how to take and homebrew it into a playable subclass? If its not payed content of course
That’s beyond the scope of this channel, so you might have better luck elsewhere on the server. #1026901431132885064 is dedicated to discussion of the playtest materials.
how much do you need to know about the game to join a group
Depends on the dm if they allow new players you can join they will teach you
okay thanks
If its listed experienced players only then well thats clear
I would suggest if you’re trying to play with strangers you at least make an effort at learning before you try to join a game. I wouldn’t want to accept a player who didn’t at least make an attempt (even if they’re still confused by some things).
Me I know basics I’m not experienced but did a lot and I mean a lot of reading on rules and stuff

Hello everyone. An old friend told me about this discord and had to check it out! I've been curious about trying D&D for a few years now.
Welcome!
Hi there
Hey everyone im quite new to playing rpgs that are not just oneshots. I wanted to ask is it more common to play selfmade campaigns in dnd or to play the official campaigns?
I don't know if there's really any meaningful way to know for sure. Both are prevalent in this community, at least.
Hmm im asking cuz I have the stormwreck isles starter kit in my shopping cart. I want to introduce some friends to tabletop pen and papers. I have always loved the idea of this and watched videos. Played as player in some campaigns but only hosted a hand full of oneshots myself as dm.
Im not sure if its too hard to get some homebrew rolling as such an inexperienced dm. I would still consider myself a total noob at actual playing the game. Hows the experience there? Would you recommend me to first try out some more prewritten adventures or is it actually not that difficult to make something decently fun homebrew?
I would absolutely recommend playing pre-written material. You could definitely start with homebrew, but I think it's common for folks to dither endelessly with their world/lore and never get to playing. Plus, if you've run an adventure, you'll have some sense of what it does/doesn't contain, how it's presented. Without that, you're shooting in the dark.
Sorry I was still writing but got time outed for writing a curseword.
My problem is: im anxious if a badly presented prewritten adventure will be a lot less fun than a badly done homebrew one. Because like it might confuse them a lot when I accidentally forgot a detail thats actually super important but I didnt notice it while preparing. On the other hand a bad selfmade homebrew might still be fun because I dont need to go as indepth as a prewritten might go and thus not confuse my players by accident
Maybe im just overthinking too much. I dont know 😦
A few things:
- Sure, not all pre-writtens are good, but you're certainly not the first to run them. There's loads of info out there to help you avoid common pitfalls.
- Even if you mess up a detail, you can always just tell them the thing you forgot after the fact. It's hard to grind the game to a halt if you're paying attention to your players.
- I prefer pre-writtens because I hate world-building and I'm a DM pressed for time, but pre-writtens are playtested and they usually give you the info you need. There are no such guarantees with homebrew, especially in terms of things you never even realized you didn't think through.
- If you're worrying about all the things that could go wrong, I'd very kindly suggest you not borrow trouble and just focus on doing it as well as you can despite not having done it before.
Hmm I guess you are right, thank you a lot for the writeup. Im not really used to having this much playtested and experienced material out there. I should just trust the src material. Before I played ParanoiaXP which is super nieche and it was hard to get down without having a big comm of people that u can ask about.
I think im fine then with ordering the Stormwreck isles Set and see where it takes us after that.
To be clear, if you want to homebrew, go for it. But that means a delay between wanting to play and actually playing, so I think pre-writtens are a great way to build up some DM skills—and you could always be chipping away at working on your homebrew thing in the interim.
Just my two cents, of course.
hmm yeah I mean Im just intimidated about how big these adventures are I guess but yeah I see whats going on, maybe even one of my players wants to DM (as if thats ever gonna happen) I just want to get something rolling in my friend circle 😄
I have one more question tho: Im planning to buy a cheap ~20€ drawable gamemat. I live in Germany and we do not use the imperial system, is it still common here to get 1" grid maps? Are the foots of german minis made for 1" grids aswell or do german figurine foots have different measurements usually? Im not planning to buy minis but those small plastic foots where you can put some cardboard cutouts in for like 5€ for 50 pcs
i dont think the mini figures feet change depending on location...
I don't use physical maps/minis, so I don't know. I suspect the folks in #dnd-minis would, though!
oh I didnt know that channel exists, thanks Ill check out there 😄
Hello :D
Hi! 🙂
Ello
Fathomless tentacle of the deep feat says as a bonus action you can create the tentacles does it also mean that in that same bonus action you can attack with it or just create it
It also says as a bonus action you can repeat the attack but wouldn’t that be two bonus actions?
"when you create the tentacle, you can make a melee spell attack against one target within 10 feet of it"
The next paragraph clarifies that as part of the bonus action to create it you may make an attack. The same is true with subsequent bonus actions used to move the tentacle you may also, as part of the same bonus action, make an attack with it
I can attack with it twice for one bonus action?
no
the tentacle can only attack once per turn since you only have the one bonus action
Then what does it mean by you can repeat the attack as a bonus action
Turn 1: you create the tentacle and can make an attack with it
Turn 2 and beyond: You can use your bonus action to move the tentacle up to 30ft AND make an attack with it
It is to provide clarity that the tentacle does not act on its own and requires the use of your bonus action per turn to command it to do anything
Hiiii
It doesn’t have hp does that mean they can’t kill it?
Aye, no one can bother the tentacle.
Does the temp hp I get from the fathomless feat grasping tentacles give me the hp until a long rest or until the tentacles go away

I went to #find-a-game and it didn’t really help at all. I’m just look for a game of dnd to play

#750812887697588356 is where players post they are looking for a DM/Group/game to play in

As it doesn't say in the ability, I'd say its up to your DM. However, for balance reasons it is likely thp until the spell ends.
temp hp last until a long rest unless otherwise stated
nvm I'm a little dumb-dumb
You only have one bonus action per turn. Period.
Thts why I was confused
If you keep that rule in mind then things will make sense when you read them
They word things badly a lot tho imo
not really
thats a very clearly worded ability
you may just not be used to the rule wording yet
Its the “repeat the attack” part that confused me cuz why would they say repeat the attack if its on a different turn but I get it now
if you know that you only have one bonus action then you will never misinterpret a feature to think it gives you two uses
I have to sit in that channel to find a game, can’t even do some because I’m to young or don’t have enough experience
And the ones that don’t have those requirements always fill up within ten minutes
finding a game requires patience
Ik, it’s just annoying
for a wood elf sorcerer, what would be a good background? im thinking of a sage but im not really sure
its up to you and what you want the character's backstory to be
ok, im working on this character bit by bit so I took sage as I feel as if I was in dnd I would be something similar
A background is, mechanically, just a set of proficiencies, languages or equipment. Dont sweat it too much, pick whatever sounds close to what you want and flavor it to work
ah, thanks
im happy aswell cos apart from strength(13) all my rolls were above 15
so my stats are stacked
16dex/wis,19 int

By reading the rules first
This is fine for practice, but bear in mind when you are in a campaign or one shot, your DM will dictate your stat gen method and most will want to see you roll your stats in front of them. A spread of all 15 is not normal
ah, thanks
Thanks.
can i move my choices after picking orrr?
Is Wizard able to use the illusion spell or is that something else?
Depending on your class level yes
thx
Yup
I want to make and play as a war forged artificer
Then you’ll want to buy the Eberron book as it has both that race and that class.
I thought you rolled one dice, then picked a stat then rolled again
this way i couldnt really guaruntee that charisma is my highest
Welcome - what exactly do you need help with?
Specific questions get answers - vague "teach me D&D" will not get as far just because we can't possibly take the time to teach one on one everyone who asks how to play D&D.
(also check the pinned messages in the channels - this one has some useful links and resources to help get you started)
What happens if you hit someone with negative damage, nothing?
DMs have different approaches. Some make you roll in order. Some don’t allow rolling at all. So if you don’t have a game or a DM yet, don’t sweat the details very much. Any character you make is practice. Learning how is the valuable thing, not having a ready-made character.
ok, i will follow that then, thank you
It does 0 damage (unless the feature specifies a minimum of 1 damage).
No
You generate your character’s six ability scores randomly. Roll four 6-sided dice and record the total of the highest three dice on a piece of scratch paper. Do this five more times, so that you have six numbers. If you want to save time or don’t like the idea of randomly determining ability scores, you can use the following scores instead: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
Now take your six numbers and write each number beside one of your character’s six abilities to assign scores to Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma. Afterward, make any changes to your ability scores as a result of your race choice.
As this appears to be a practice character, you can swap them around now
i thougt you rolled d20s
That isn’t it at all.
SUPER practise character, my first one
What? No
It sounds like you need to go to the basic rules and read the section in character creation again
This is what OZ is referring to: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters
i get the basics like the damage sistem and classes and stuff like that, but i dont get stuff like spells and how something like "animal handling" could be helpful for anyone except a druid
How often does it come up where there’s one powerful evil guy and he’s there as his minions are attacking?
There are millions of people playing the game. There’s no way to know how often it happens.

Review the basic rules
You’re asking us to tell you want happens across DND games played by random groups across the planet by strangers to us
Or you personally
Anecdotal evidence from a random person isnt useful to you
Could a big bad guy show up with minions? Sure?
Will they? Who can say, nobody
ok but like can a wizard have a sword
maybe your DM, but he isnt gonna tell you
A question that can be answered by reading the rules
It is if they’ve played the official campaigns tht have been out
buddy you might encounter that or not, and more to the point, why would you want us to spoil the adventure
How bout: play and find out?
U r a grumpy person
i have a great idea for a wizard character but for it to work he has to wield a non-wizard weapon
Okay folks - take a breath and calm down. No need to be hostile but also asking folks about random stuff that may have no bearing on you or your game might not be all that helpful either.
Wizards can use swords, but they’re not especially good with them usually. There are exceptions. You should read the rules, however, so we’re not answering questions only as they occur to you!
You are thinking about this wrong.
You play the adventure to find out whats gonna happen
If you just wanna know, you can buy the adventure and read every potential encounter
great
Since every table is different, even reading a prewritten adventure and seeing how something is set up doesn't mean "this is how it works 100% of the time" either - the adventure can change just based on the players at the table, their characters they're playing, how the DM decides to run things, and boy howdy dice rolls to really add some chaos. D&D is a social collaborative story telling game and how things will work is very context dependent.
i aint reading allat🗣️🗣️💯 (thats a lie, i read it)
Hi, completly new to DnD and I mean literally completly new, I know nothing other than the fact its fun and kinda hard to learn. Any tips or something about how to actually get into it would be helpful

New players please scroll up and check the links in the bot message
Its all stuff you should read
is improved pact weapon a must on a hexblade warlock? So you dont have to put away your weapon and pull out your spellcasting focus everytime you want to do something else?
It's not a must, but it can be a help! For example, if you had a sword in one hand and your other hand was free, you could use your free hand as your focus hand as needed. And some spells don't even need a focus at all!
Yes
ok ty

But do you know any board game set I should get first? I’ve looked on Amazon and game stop and there’s a lot to choose from
I just downloaded the game on my phone so I think I’ll start there but it’s good to know
D&D isn't a board game.
Oh
Then it’s a paper game
You write on paper right?
I’m confused
Well you know what I mean
No, I don't know what you mean. I don't assume what new players think D&D is because they may have encountered D&D from other mediums.
In any case, read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
Hey y'all, I joined to drag my bf here since he's looking for local friends near NOLA

Check out #third-party-tools-archive if you have questions about VTTs
Check out #find-a-game to look for games that may be in your area.
Would these dice be fine for rolling? From the pictures they look kind of rough in some areas and might have super tiny air bubbles idk
https://a.co/d/8yKYtk3
Theyre fine…
I mean nobody here is running tests on dice
What game did you download on your phone? There’s no mobile dnd based video game that I know of
No it’s a tabletop roleplaying game
Maybe they just misspoke and meant DnD beyond?
Also hi, Mexikuma. Or just Mexi. Brand new here.

im new to dnd and do i rlly have to spend money on a book?
Try the free basic rules first - if you like the game, then consider investing in the Players Handbook and other books as they strike your fancy. But you can play D&D with just the free basic rules.
hey would anyone be down to maybe let me watch a game if you're playing one sometime soon? i think it would be good for me to watch and learn more :))
I'd suggest checking out YouTube and Twitch for D&D liveplay streams/video on demand. I'd recommend the Dungeon Dude's Dungeons of Drakkenheim games as a good D&D show to watch. They stay fairly close to the official rules with the exception of their homebrew setting and a few things related to that.
okay thank you, i'll try that - if not just DM me if i can possibly watch a game, but i'll try the live streams first. thanks!
is there a channel where I can find existing characters
a lot of people have posted their character builds in #character-discussion over the years.
I’m a bit confused by all the options in this server how would one go about all of this?
I suggest reading #channel-guide
hi im new here and im looking for a dnd session for fridays or saturdays
PLUH!!
huh
go to looking for players (find a game)
i did theres not very many for fridays or saturdays

Hi, im new here :)
Welcome
The answer to all 3 questions is "it depends."
D&D is a game that's played between the small group people (typically 4-6 players) at a table (or online) together. The rules and customs that they use are totally up to them. So, if you have specific requirements that you are looking for, then you just need to find a DM or group that is willing to meet those requirements. I will say, that your second question there might be the hardest one to find. In my personal experience, D&D sessions typically last about 2-4 hours, with it occasionally going longer. That's just my own tables and my own DMs though. If you look hard enough, you might be able to find someone who can run something that short
I'm really knew to Dnd, and none of the friends I am near find it interesting enough to try unfortunately. Is there an option to do an online campaign with players who aren't close?
Yep, online play is very common. Here's a good primer on how to make that happen: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/750-new-players-guide-how-to-play-d-d-online
I'd argue that's how most people play dnd nowadays. Look in #find-a-game for more info
Thank you! ^^
Can you attack a person that you have grappled (provided you have a free hand)?
Yep.
Awesome and it's normally just a straight roll right? Grappled doesn't do anything except for setting the grappled victims speed to 0?
You got it.
Awesome, thanks so much
Just make sure you aren't using a weapon with the Two-Handed property
Versatile is fine, since you can use the 1 handed mode when attacking the creature you have grappled (or anyone else), but if the weapon has the two-handed property, you can't use it until you release the grapple
Ah okay, thanks for letting me know
I got that yes
Asking for a partymate’s HP, is it meta gaming?
But is there a particular d&d set I should get first?
Has anyone here tried the recently released LotR set for DND?
Hello, I’m new at dnd could anyone help me the rules and the basic and would like to try a match, i’ve got this Starter Kit, lost mine of phandelver
It depends on how it's done. In-character is probably acceptable, and out-of-character may also fly at your particular table, though the specific number is metagaming. Not all metagaming is discouraged.
?new - see these resources for getting started!
Doesn’t work
The starter or essential sets are good places to begin 🙂
The ?help command
See the pinned messages in this channel, then.
Thanks
That's not a newcomer question, so maybe ask in #dnd-discussion?
Oh Dyno, why would you leave me hanging my robot friend?
Understood!
Dyno is slow today
It works hard. Even bots need a break.
Ya but it’s fine
Here is a link to the last time it actually worked
#dnd-newcomers message
So i type ?help
I was just doing that myself, Lionn!
I'll find another miniature giant space hamster to put in Dyno's wheel
Rip it doesn’t work
Ya I figured
?help would give you info about Dyno itself, not about D&D.
Oh
I found a good d&d essentials kit that has 20k reviews
And it’s by wizard rpg games so I guess it’s legit
So I will get that first and read all about the game
Yea there’s a couple of new player kits by Wotc and their pretty good
I recommend the essentials kit for Dragon of Icespire since everyone says that’s better plus dragon
It’s pretty good, pretty sure it’s called the essentials kit
Icespire Peak isn't a cohesive story, so it might be easier or harder for a new DM to run. I wouldn't have done well with it, myself.
Not for starting out, anyway.
Yea, personally it isn’t my favorite as a DM or Player (the gold mine derailed my campaign) I preferred lost mine of Phandelver but everyone else says Icespire
Lost Mine has the advantage of being free.
considering that Phandelver is free you could always try to run it with Essentials Kit
Yea
Is it not allowable or just not a good idea to suggest SRD to people in place of basic rules?
The SRD is a legal document, not the rules, and so wouldn't be helpful for people trying to learn the game.
Isn't the srd for people who want to make DND stuff
It's not even like the comprehensive rules or anything
Exactly.
hi, im new to DnD too, so we can try, but we need a dm :|
Read through #find-a-game for instructions on using the server's Looking for Group/Game channels.
Does DND have comprehensive rules? It doesn't right? That's why people always quote like the tweets of that one guy or whatever
The rules cover a lot, but they don't cover everything. Some people see this as a feature, others a bug.
A system with rules for every eventuality would likely be unreadably long.
5E's rules have been simplified (compared to previous editions) for sake of ease of use. A lot of situations on a case-by-case basis will be up to the DM to decide rather than the written rules.
not new but probs missed a lot as the last time I played dnd was when i was 15 im now 22
i made my first character sheet anyone wanna see it
A lot of new content has released since then, but that was still 5e, so it shouldn't be too bad to get caught up
#character-discussion would be the place to do so!
thank you
What's the best way to find people in my area playing dnd?
@jolly portal I'll see that character sheet
Check if any library, school clubs, and/or game/hobby stores are running tabletop programming. You might also try out https://locator.wizards.com/.
Some LFG (looking for game/group) sites do let you search by locality, but I forget which ones. Let me check.
I'm sort of sad there isn't a website to join a round or campaign of dnd yet. It feels like something we want and could have, but don't have. :[
Facebook, craigslist, warhorn, or find a chapter of the Adventures League near you:
- this isnt a video game, playing takes prep
- there are places to look
In addition, there are gaming or general hobby conventions that feature DND events
D&D is too much of a commitment, and requires too much initial setup and communication between players and DM for "click a button, play D&D" to ever work
Sorry, ok
For example, Gen Con in Indianpolis is a massive event with all sorts of tabletop and video game stuff and numerous dnd games running all weekend
You should also check out Gylded, Tabletop Wizard, Gamer Seeking Gamer, and Find Gamers, which all allow you to search by locality.
You don't have to apologize. You didn't do anything wrong.
We're just trying to have a conversation with you about it
I can't think of a way to respond without apologising again haha
The closest thing is westmarch play, but even then, yes, it takes some advance notice.

time for me to get back into the game
Help I need help I worried I been doing magic missiles wrong
I been shooting magic missiles at level 2 and be doing 4d4+1
But someone told me it was 1d4+1 4 times
Each dart was 1d4+1 for 4 darts
So a max damage I can do is 17 or 20
It's debatably written and up to the DM on how they wanna do it. I've even heard you roll once per target and use the same damage for each dart that hits the same target.
I mean in the base DND rules written in the PHB I know DM can change but I am going off as the player handbook writes it no homebrew
Yeah. Ask in #dnd-rules if you want the strictest book interpretation. I think it will be like I said
The question they have is the +1 at the end
You can either roll 1d4+1 x 4, or roll 4d4 + 4. Mathematically it's the same
Which yes, you get +1 force for each dart
Oh, oh that's always +1 per dart.
So the max with a second level spell is 20
Thanks I misread that question
Good work from the magical artillery!
Ah Because I was doing Wildmagic and got the
34 on my wild magic surge - Maximize the damage of the next damaging spell you cast within the next minute.
And did magic missiles level 3
And only put out a mistake 17 damage as I misread and did 4 bullets
Do I have to make a new character for every new game?
I meant like session
No...
Oh
You create a character for an adventure. If you play another adventure with the same DM, they'll tell if you can use the same character or roll up a new one.
An adventure could be as short as one session (those are called "one-shots") or last several sessions.
Campaigns can last a year or more (real time).
Just to clarify, incase you didn't know this:
A "session" is a single period of time which you play D&D, typically 2 to 4 hours
An "adventure" is the story being told across multiple sessions. A single adventure may last several weeks, or even several years, depending on the DM and the group
A "One Shot" as OldMan just described, is when an Adventure only takes 1 session to complete
To answer your question, you will typically use one character for an entire Adventure (unless they die) which means you will use them for multiple Sessions, unless it is a One Shot
"Campaign" and "Adventure" typically mean the same thing
Oh so then I meant adventure
TV analogy for D&D
One-shot = made for tv movie
Adventure = a tv miniseries
Campaign = a multi-season tv series
Sorry
The campaign I'm running has many adventures (some are are barely connected (those are person side quests for PCs)) within an overarcing campaign plot.
There are no rules specifically forbidding you from bringing a character to multiple adventures, but your dungeon master may have you "reset" them if they are too powerful for the current game
It's up to your DM if you can bring over a character from another DM's table. Personally I don't because unless I know that other DM I tell my players to roll new characters because that way they are created within my house rule guidelines.
Don't be sorry, questions should always be asked
Indeed - this channel exists for folks new to D&D to ask questions.
That said we do ask you spend some time reading the free basic rules and be specific in your questions.
Overly broad questions like "can someone teach me D&D?" is not going to get the same response as say a specific question like "What does hit die mean?"
so i decided to use something other than dndb for character sheets, so i printed them out. it's been one session and ive destroyed 2 whole sheets with how much erasing and updating I've done. i was wondering if there are any better ways to update sheets?
Why do so many stores that definitely run dnd not appear in the store locator, whereas there's so many in the store locator that don't run dnd anymore?
It doesn’t get updated very often sadly but it’s a good starting point to find stores
Laminate them and use dry erase markers
laminate?
Is English your first language?
no
Glossy paper that has been made more sturdy to preserve it
oh those glossy plastic lookin papers?
Yep. You can print out a character sheet and take it to a store like Staples, and they will cover it in that coating for you. Then you can use dry erase markers on the paper
also instead of dry erase markers, will whiteboard markers work?
That’s what dry erase markers are.
oh, well great
Hey what are some character creators besides dnd beyond? I want to use classes that aren’t there for the free version like eldrich knight
Ight
Hey! I’ve literally never played dnd and honestly don’t really know how discord works either. Was hoping some friendly folks could help me get started as I’m excited to learn and meet people!

@echo kelp Thank you so much! I’ll definitely check that out!
I finished reading the players handbook today but even tho I did...I still feel like there is a lot I don't understand. People said that I should join a group to play but I feel like if I do so...I will end up being clueless about a lot of stuff and that I'll be annoying the members of the party and dm with my questions-
I'm personally looking for people to play with online or over the phone
Well first off - good on you for reading! I'd suggest watching dome D&D liveplay streams on YouTube or Twitch to see some of the rule mechanics in effect (but also understanding that these streams focus on entertainment first and not teaching the rules specifically). Then maybe try making a character or two to get a feel on how character rules work. Then find a group to play with! Already a step ahead cus my character is already made, also thank you^^
Hi, im looking to join a new campaign, cause the last one i was in, a player and tge dm had an argument and we havent played 3 games in a row
You'll want to check out #looking-for-players and/or #looking-for-community. You can also post that you're looking for a game in #750812887697588356. If you're comfortable paying you can check out #paid-looking-for-game.
Thank you 😁
It kind of sucks that I couldn't do a drake warden ranger subclass in baldurs gate 3
Hey I’m new to dnd, and I’m looking through looking for players but some stuff I’m not sure what it means? Any guide or something help define basic terms used in dnd?
Check out the pinned guides in this channel. There's lots of stuff there to get you started.
Oh okay, thank you
Here's one such resource: https://thinkdm.org/glossary/
Depending on the term, you could always ask the poster or elsewhere in the server for clarity.
Okay, thank you!
The Basic Rules, as samorasie mentions, also have lots of info, and you should probably be somewhat familiar with them before joining a game.
What’s a good list of books for a new comer to snatch before hunting a campaign?
You don’t need any, but the players handbook is the first book you should get if you want to really get into it
Will dungeon masters work with you? Like if I chose ranger and drake warden as a subclass will they work with me to make a character arc to find my dragon egg and stuff. Let me raise him
?
If they allow that subclass and you communicate with them, I'd say many would want to collaborate, yeah.
Okay, thanks. I don't really know what story I'd like to take part in.
What campaign
You could read up on the premises of the official 5e adventures and see if any strike you. Beyond that, you're kind of at the mercy of what DMs offer if they're creating their own.
Because they are different games
And yet…still, they are not the same. One is a video game loosely based on the other, a table top game, but a person should not expect direct translation between the two. Best to break that expectation now
Hi, I'm new to DnD .I'm wanting to play at a place near me that is community based. I would do their new player 3 day session. However, it conflicts with school unfortunately
i mean…we cant help with that particular issue
But check other gaming stores or groups in the area, yelp, craigslist, facebook, warhorn, meetup, etc
There’s three main ways to determine ability scores. You should ask your DM which to use.
I don't have a dm yet
Theres a section in the basic rules that specifically explains generating your ability scores, have u read that?
In that case, I’d suggest you stick with the standard array or point buy, to be safe.
Those are all described here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#3DetermineAbilityScores
Point-buy and standard array are almost universally accepted
Rolling is also popular but typically is done with the DM
Got it, I'll go fix that
Yeah, if a DM wants you to roll, they often want to see that roll for themself.
But you can always update your ability scores later once you’ve spoken to your DM.
Yeah
I think I finished my character sheet, would you be able to take a look and see if I did it right?
What are trying to get help for
Let’s see it!
Hi! i'm new to dnd and made a grung monk and i'm kind of confussed with how a monk fights
I can kind of understand the ki stuff but not the attack, bonus action, the flurry of blows, etc. A member just mentioned to me that I can attack many times but i don't know how
On your turn, you can take one action and one bonus action.
At level one, you can take the Attack action to make one attack, and use the Martial Arts bonus action for a second attack.
The flurry of blows allows you to make two attacks as a bonus action, and at higher levels, you can gain extra attacks with the attack action
At level two when you unlock Ki, you can instead take the Flurry of Blows bonus action which lets you make two attacks, rather than one.
It requires 1 ki per use though, and you have 1 ki per level as a monk, so use it wisely
got it, my monk is lvl 6, a member just told me I can make 5 attacks in total using martial arts, extra attack and flury of blow, is that right?
No
That is false. Martial arts and flurry of blows are two separate bonus actions. Thus, you can only make 2 attacks with your bonus action, assuming you flurry of blows. At level 5, you get one extra attack with the attack action, therefore 2 attacks with your action, for a total of 4 attacks
At lv 6:
ACTION: Taking the Attack action triggers Extra attack. That is two attacks
BONUS ACTION: Spend a Ki point, trigger Flurry of Blows. Instead of making one unarmed attack with Martial Arts, you make two
total: 4 attacks
That is probaly a easier to read version of what I said, thanks
oooh i see, thank you so much!
and for example, since my character is a grung, does each attack he makes... does the enemy have to make a saving throw for the poisinous skin?
From my understanding of the rules, yes. "Or otherwise comes into direct contact with your skin"
got it! i believe the poison wouldn't stack on each other right?
No, a creature can only be effected by the same effect once, unless stated otherwise
You should be aware that Grung may not be legal st your table:
Disclaimer: Outside of a certain surrogate character, this document in no way makes grung a legal, playable race in the D&D Adventurers League, or any other campaign where the Dungeon Master hates amphibians with an excess of apostrophes in their names… and yes if you’re not immune to poison and you must touch the grung to heal it… you get to make a saving throw.
Looks like it published for a charity event or something
yes, that is a potential downside, any touch range healing spells or abilities will cause the healer to have to make a save vs poison
It isnt in the Players Handbook or Mordenkeinan’s Multiverse book
ok! i did show the character to the master and he had no problem with grung.
thank you so much for the clarifications!
Sorry, I misunderstood your message OptionZero
Is the game really complicated?
Not really, once you learn the basic rules. Ask any questions you may have here, and they will be answered.
All you need is a basic understanding of a language that a sourcebook is translated into, and basic math(Addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division)
Technically yes, practically…its meant for multiple people. A DM and 3-6 players
Oh ok
Yes but no. There are solo dnd options if my memory serves me correct, but I have not have had experience with them, and they are separate from the official content. The bare minimum is 1 dm and 1 player, but I recommend at least 3 players and 1 dm
Ok
You can take only one bonus action on your turn, so you must choose which bonus action to use when you have more than one available.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#BonusActions
Schools starting September 5 so I should have company
I suggest starting a dnd club at your school if there isnt one already. That being said, I suggest being careful about the group size if you do choose to start one. 6 is the highest I recommend, 4-5 for a newer dm.
Ok thanks
My school doesn’t start clubs like that sadly
It’s pretty small so
But I have family aswell that is interested
Any gaming store will likely have some sort of setup to run games
I got the d&d beyond app and downloaded the free basic rules book
I haven’t even ordered the game yet and I’m starting to learn it
Take your time
Thats enough to start, You can always hold off on buying any official books until you get the hang of dnd
Hello. My intro to DnD was baldur's gate 3 XD
Now I'm more interested in the TTRPG too, but I have no clue how any of this works.
Ask, and you shall recieve
I'm a little confused about playable races in the TTRPG.
I was told that not all playable races in BG3 are playable in the original TTRPG.
I dont know much about BG3, but the base rules have some races, while you have to buy source books to access the others
Oh and I don’t know if you need to know this but I’m getting dragon of icespire first. I’ve heard good reviews about it
Source books?
Ya what are source books?
Source Books, such as the players handbook, dungeon masters guide, etc etc, books that define/add onto the rules, expanding content
Oh boy
This is a long type I’m scared
They aren't needed ever, and I wouldnt recommend getting them until you've played a few games and understand the basic rules
Ok good
ahh
mainly because I play a drow in BG3 and I wasn't sure if they were in the base ttrpg
But dragon of ice spire is a good one to start with right?
since I've grown very attached to her ><
I dont have knowledge with that one specifically, you'd be better off asking someone else
I’ve asked which ones to start with and dragon of ice spire is a good one apparently
But which one did you start with?
Yeah it’s good from what I’ve heard
I believe drow are in the phb, but you can reflavor a high elf(which is in the basic rules) to start
I started playing in a wild beyond the witchlight campaign
I’m so confused
sorry phb?
I started in this really bad homebrew campaign, because none of us knew how to play, the first full campaign I'd consider good was probaly the al eberron campaign, but that might be because of the incredible dm
There are so many of them
Phb is players handbook
My first foree in DMing was running a oneshot adventure module called The Breath of the Yellow Rose
It costs about $5 on the DMs Guild (thats a website)
I recommend it to most new DMs because it has an even split of exploration, social and combat
Lost mines of Phandelver is pretty good, if you ever want to branch out into a slightly longer one, but I suggest sticking with a one shot/shorter adventure for your first time dming
Players handbook
Are classes also locked to expansions?
Only 1
Only the artificer class
Most of the classes are in the basic rules
The artificer is "locked" behind Tasha's Cauldron of Everything (and Eberron).
Player’s Handbook main one
Xanthar’s Guide to Everything
Tasha’s Cauldron or Everything
These are the main optional books that add some updated rules, spells, and subclasses (and Artificer)
Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse is the latest version of races and creatures to use
Other optional books are Sword Coast Adventures Guide and Fizban’s Treasury
Ok well thank you all for the help. I’m going to read the basic rules and don’t be suprised if I come back
Okay cause I was wondering if there was a subclass that's like a chronomancer with some damage spells that I could use a rapier with (pretty much only for RP purposes)
That's the point of the channel, for newcomers to ask questions, and for us to answer
thanks
Very well
Cya!
The chronomancer is a wizard subclass, but it is in the explorers guide to wildemount source book
There’s a chronomancy wizard subclass, but Gish wizards (outside of bladesingers) don’t work well
Gish???
Gish is a term, you might know it better as "spellblade"
Ohh
You can flavor a staff to be a rapier, or ask a dm to give you a item called Ruby of the war mage, which effectively allows you to make any weapon or armor a focus
You still won’t last long in melee combat
Your best option would be play a proper Gish subclass and flavour your spells as chronomancy related
Messing with time tends to not work great in a collaborative game where everyone is a real person
Hence why there’s minimal options
Id argue against that, the chronurgy subclass works perfectly fine
It makes it work well
But your classic rewind time and time travel stuff are hard to do
Yeah, the limit in "regular" dnd, thats not homebrew, is time stop
Yep
For example, you could flavor a teleport spell as a weaker time stop that you use to run to a different place
Ehhh, if that were the flavor of the spell then why would the character not just use it to get the same effect as time stop?
- please do not ping me, and 2. it could be that they cannot hold it for that long, maybe its a experimental version of time stop, you can come up with all sorts of reasonings
Hmm....I guess is there something like Red Mage from FF14? Mainly spell casting but some light melee
Yep
Plenty of options for a gish
Bladesinger wizard and hexblade warlock are the best
There’s also eldritch knight fighter, paladins, rangers, war clerics, Valor and swords bards
Arcane trickster rogue
Bladesinger sounds closest to what you want tho
they said mainly spell casting, I would say some form of cleric. Unless my experience is off, I've seen bladesingers go all in on melee, using spells to boost themselves, rather than using spells and a bit of melee
I suppose its just the bladesingers I've seen then
That’s how a lot of people play bladesingers but they’re better as a caster that has high ac and can go melee if needed
Also i think they probably want arcane casting
Never played ff14 but “red mage” sounds like a wizard or arcane style caster
Again, please do not ping me, as it says in my nickname. Also, better is debatable, but it can work booth ways. If arcane casting is desired, you can alternatively work with your dm to reflavor things, I'm currently going to play a reflavored monk/druid whos magic/ki is arcane based, rather than ki/nature deity based
Oh sorry, I forgot to disable it
All good
Are there any finesse weapons that aren't made out of metal?
Not as far as I know, but if you work with your dm you might be able to figure something out
Making my way through the basic rules on dnd beyond
a whip
finesse + badasse
And my DM has let me add finesse to a quarterstaff before just because it makes sense
What is the easy way to keep track of spell slots during a game
when you cast a spell cross out the square that represents the spell slot
when you take a long rest erase all the crosses
If you multiclass how many slots do you get
there is rules on those. look it up on the internet. it depends on what classes u use.
I miss 4th
what classes are you and what lvl
What number do I have to reach to maintain concentration after taking damage?
Yeah that's what I'm gonna ask cause basically my characters druidic focus is the bones of their family but I wanna have a finesse melee weapon so basically I'd be wanting to finesse whack people with my staff made out of the bones of my characters family
DC 10 or damage taken devided by 2, whichever is the biggest number
would shillelagh be an option?
to attack with wis
Probably. These are my characters starting stats if I remember right so yeah that could work
8 str
17 dex
14 con
10 int
16 wisdom
8 charisma
Dc 10 and you add your constituion modifier?
yes
i recommend making wisdom your highest score and get it to 20 asap. but looks good and shillelagh will fix your problems
I'm using my stats as a reflection of my characters backstory, which I can send if you want.
that might be beyond the scope of this channel but you can pm me if you want. The wis thing was just a standard recommendation, if you want to change it up for story reasons thats valid
#character-discussion would be a great place to discuss your characters backstory
hi guys, im brand new to dm-ing (hosted my first session yesterday to practice with my also brand new pcs to get any hiccups out of the way when we begin the real campaign) and ive been having a rather tough time understanding battle, mostly how to roll for enemy attack and stuff. i was wondering if anyone would be down to help me out via dms (or here idk which is better because im not going to be active all day). ive watched a couple videos online about how to dm battles but they all seem to skim over how to actually handle the enemy side of things and what specific rolls to do for attacks and such
i ended up doing the first three encounters quite wrong and im very confused, especially so considering the wording of some attacks is quite complicated and inconsistent
Rolling for enemy attacks is a case of rolling a d20 and adding the 'to hit' modifier listed in their attack
Let's take the very simple Black Bear stat block
It has Bite
Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 5 (1d6 + 2) piercing damage.
You first roll a d20 and at the to hit bonus (+4) and compare this to the AC of the player character you're attacking. If it meets or beats the AC, the attack hits and you move on to rolling for damage
Damage is listed after Hit: and in this case it's 1d6 + 2 (the 5 listed outside the bracket is the average of that damage which you can use to save time)
Piercing is the damage type and that matters for various other game rules, such as resistances or vulnerabilities
omg you perfectly explained it
thank you so much lol i dont know how i misinterpreted it so bad
also iirc the proficiency bonus of the enemy is also added to the attack roll? so if they had prof +2 that would add onto the d20 and +4 to hit?
Some monsters have actions that require saves, such as a Red Dragon Wyrmling and it's Fire Breath
Fire Breath (Recharge 5–6). The dragon exhales fire in a 15-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a DC 13 Dexterity saving throw, taking 24 (7d6) fire damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.
In this case, you ask the player or players in the cone to make a dexterity saving saving throw. You roll the damage (7d6) and then each player that rolls less than 13 takes that amount of damage and each player that rolls 13 or higher takes half that much
If the players need to make a saving throw to avoid the attack, does the enemy also need to roll an attack roll or is it solely based upon the outcome of the saving throw from the players?
Stat blocks include the Prof bonus and the stat ability to the attack already for you. Looking at the Black bear again- it has a +2 strength and a +2 prof bonus, which it is using for its Bite, adding up to +4 to the attack.
Saving throws are vs a static DC. For the Red dragon Wyrmling that is DC 13 (" Each creature in that area must make a DC 13 Dexterity saving throw,"). Any who roll 13 or higher have beaten this DC, and in this case the result is half damage.
I see, thank you
so are attack roles done with those attacks for the enemy to decide whether they hit or not (sorry)
just want to be 100% sure so i dont mess up the campaign when we start
Attack rolls are always made against AC and made by the attacker
Saving throws are always made against a DC and made by the defender
