I've named the magic that happens funny names like the random affect of light surrounding them sonic chaos crystals
Nice! Flavor is free - just don't mess with the mechnics!
Of course
I'm but a humble player that abides by the rules
My unarmoured defence is 16 which is lucky compared to my friend that got a 13
So is this the right place for me if I have NEVER played any form of DnD before and want to learn and play?

Is a giants tooth a viable trophy
certainly seems a viable trophy! But check with your Dungeon Master
Like as an outlander
Yea I asked and they said yes but there the same person that said the musical instrument I can have a proficiency in can be a vuvuzela
Nice!
any way for druids to learn necromancy?
Multiclass to a necromancer
A magic initiate feat? Multiclassing? DM allowing you to learn necromatic spells?
ok ty
I'm getting my first full set of dice tomorrow
I won't have to annoy my friends for some
My character is so basic
He's a half orc berserker
Nothing wrong with basic as long as everyone is having fun.
Spore Druid gets necromancy stuff
can characters drop multiclasses? Like in character development my druid ends his pact with the fiend?
ok ty
Not without the DM allowing the player to respec the character.
ok ty
Hello everyone I’m a newcomer who seeks guidance and help on what to do as a new dnd player/ Dm
Did you read the free Basic Rules yet?
Do we need do get a big board for dnd
I have read the server rules as well as some dnd rules however my mind is still limited to most of the dnd player base
You can play just with paper sheets and pencils and dice (and the free basic rules). Nothing else is absolutely needed.

Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
I’ve printed out the player creation hand book as well as the one other on monsters handbook
The monsters handbook is for the DM
I've made my character and yet nobody wants to play
It takes time to find a group and get things scheduled - please be patient.
Most games don't just start at an instant - got to cooridnate and schedule everything.
Hiya! Im still kinda new to dnd, Could i have some advice?
Advice for what?
If I were to attempt a campaign would I need to buy like a map figures books etc? Or could a simple just table we’re people sit and talk it out work aswell.
You don't need to buy anything.
You can play D&D just with character sheets, pencils, dice, and the free basic rules.
Alright was just wondering. I’m currently in a campaign and my friend has really put in the effort witch I’m happy for him but if I were too I just wouldn’t be able to drop that cash lol
If your friend has books then ask them to share the books with you.
True true
What are the main important things i need to know? And what are the best things that i should watch and read? ( i really want to get more into D&D but i have troubble learning things due to my autism)
sorry my spelling isnt the best
does anybody know what happens if a character dies on an ongoing session?
do I have to create a new one or am I out of the session?
dpends on the DM, the type of game being played, and the groups expectations.
We can't really give you a "this is how it always is" answer for that.
I see
There's a playlist called "handbooker helper" by critical role, they explain the basics in a simple, short and practical way
I'm sure it'd help checking them out if you're a complete beginner
Most dms would continue until a bit after that particular battle ends, give the other characters a chance to express their sadness for the loss of a friend, bit of dramatic fun roleplay maybe, then end the session there
oh
thanks
Of course
You wouldn't wanna start a new mission or something without letting the player participate at all
And nobody has a replacement character at the ready
is that on youtube?
gotcha
Also, what are campaigns?
Yup
Basically that's what you call a dnd game
A campaign is usually multiple sessions of playing
TV analogy for D&D
One-shot = made for tv movie
Adventure = a tv miniseries
Campaign = a multi-season tv series
which dnd type is the most common one so I can prepare myself?
Not sure we can provide any data on that.
¯_(ツ)_/¯
I mean like, the version
5th Edition is the current and most popular edition.
gotcha thanks
From my personal experience and assuming a decent stable playing group, I lean towards campaign being the most common sprinkled with some one-shots. But again that's just my experience.
5E is the default edition we talk about here. You can discuss about older editions in #dnd-elder-editions
I see, thanks
how can i find campaings?
To watch or to play?

If those instructional materials don't explain enough you can always ask questions in here or in the other channels!
So I am hoping to see if anyone has a suggestion to this. I am trying to gain the ability to ignore one type of elemental resistance. Specifically fire resistance. I know there is the Elementalist Adept heroic feat but I'm curious if there are any rings, enchanted items ect homebrew or other that could achieve this
Great question for #character-discussion - it's a bit more than a newcomer question!
Fair enough, had my first ever session last night realizing I goofed my build already and trying to remedy. Ty for direction
So how do i go about getting into a game?
im trying to get a dm
and i dont have the abillity to use the channel to request one

difference between summon and conjuring? Like whats the difference between summon fey and conjure fey
Checking the spells right now.
I think it's the difference between making one out of spirit-stuff (conjure) and yoinking one to you (summon).
Don't quote me, though, I'm guessing.
It seems like Summon Fey is making like an illusion of a fey where when you drop the spells concentration it disappears, meanwhile with conjure fey you make it permenant but the concentration is just being able to control the creature (in conjure fey's case the form of a beast).
Correct me if I'm wrong, that's what I'm getting from this.
ok ty
Did I get it wrong?
The summon/conjure distinction is based on a change in how they decided to handle spells thatt let you create a creature or other thing to fight for you
Pre-Tasha’s, those spells were named “Conjure ___”, such as “conjure woodland beings”. Those spells basicaly set a creature type and CR and let the players (technically the DM) pick the things summoned
You control both, Conjure Fey has a different initiative and Summon Fey uses your initiative.
Also I was wrong they both disappear after the spell ends.
The flaw with that wording is the amount freedom it gave meant the actual execution at the table was messy. Players and DMs needed to come up with the stat blocks for the creatures, and roll each ones initiatative, and the CR guide is wildly inaccurate
In Tasha’s, they streamlined the spells ALOT: Summon __ meant you summoned a creature with a statblock given IN the spell
Oh yeah that makes sense I was looking at Tasha's Summon Fey spell.
For example, Summon Beast gives you three stat block options to pick from, that loosely scaled with spell level, and your proficiency
The other thing I really love with Tasha's summons is that the flavor is entirely undescribed, which encourages players to come up with really unique appearances for their summon
This meant player/DM did not have fumble thru a book for the stats
So yeah, as far as the in-game world canon, both of these spells essentially do the same thing. One is just better than the other.
so they just gave a stat block, made the fey disappear after losing concentration instead of the original effect, and dropped the spell by 3 levels
Basically.
all Summon X spells creature goes after ur turn
Basically: Conjure X spells are older, poorly worded, susceptible to abuse by players, and Summon X spells are newer, streamlined spels that are more balanced
summon fey makes fey disappear after losing concentration tho
All of these spells function like that
conjure fey doesnt
They are all concentration, and the creatures disappear after the spell ends
conjure fey if you lose concentration the fey just becomes hostile
That is a specific spell with wording that overrides the normal rule that spell ends when concentration is dropped
In general, the creatures summoned or conjured disappear
Yes.
If you enter melee range and leave it, you will eat an opportunity attack from the target but you can move, attack, move
ok ty
Are you envisioning that being your preferred play style
Hey, I got a question I’m planning to make this hulking boss and I don’t really know how to go about making stats for this guy like should I just make him a level 15 barbarian or is there something else I should do I am very new to dming
This should probably go in #dm-discussion
Ok
yes?
I have a fun question here and I need help lol I want to make a healer character that also is secretly killing the other players how can I do that and can I even do that?
In most tables pvp is not generally welcomed, and Id be wary of a player joining a table with the express purpose of killing the other chracters
@edgy onyx ok what about everytime I heal someone they get a bad or just funny debuff or something lol
But in every case, that is something that would be up to the DM
Ohhh ok thank you
@edgy onyx what is a good DnD campaign we could start out on as a new DnD group?
Well there are few starter afventures, like the ones that come with the Starter Set or Essentials kit
Lost Mine of Phandelver
Dragon of Icespire Peak
Dragons of Stormwreck Isle
Dragon of Icespire Peak is my personal favourite, has a simple premise and is structured like bunch of quests
We are doing a DnD campaign online would the physical copy still work or can we get one for online only?
Does anyone here play a lot of Warlock?
How would I go to learn and play dnd?

Oh boy
It depnds how you play online.
Do people use dnd beyond for campaign a lot? I’m thinking about buying the physical copy of the book but I’m not sure if it would be as good to use
Depends if you are you going to DM in person or online.
I DM exclusively online now so I use the digital books (but I also own the physical books).
I have no friends irl who play dnd so it would be online. From what I’ve seen on the dnd beyond article you can’t save the books as a file, which mean if I lost my account somehow I wouldn’t have access to the book itself
Well, yes this is why you should have a good password.
If you have the D&D app you can use your digital books offline.
I guess I’ll buy the online one I’ll just go make sure I actually remember any of my password
Hey I’m looking for dm and group to play with im fairly new as well anyone down to let me join I’ll be able to start playing around Wednesday
#looking-for-players is this server's channel for DMs to post listings for their games. Otherwise you can look on the various other places LFG posts are done such as facebook pages and subreddits
Thank you
Hey, new to dnd, trying to find groups to play with.
Thank you
I haven’t played DnD before, but maybe I will play it.
What is your question
A level 2 fighter can attack one extra time, then at level five it says you can attack two times, people say at level 5 you can attack four times though why isn’t it three?
When a fighter level 2 takes the Attack Action, they make one attack
However at level 2, they gain an ability called Action Surge, which grants them a second Action that turn. It can be used to take the Attack Action and therefore make 2 attacks. Action surge can be used one per short rest until later levels
At Level 5, Fighter (and other martial classss) gain an ability called Extra Attack.
This feature allows them to make two attacks when they take the Attack Action.
A fighter at level 5 that uses Action Surge has two Actions
If the fighter uses the Attack Action, he can attacks twice each time due to Extra Attack
Thus the Fighter has two features which can work together: Extra Attack and Action Surge
the primary distinction is that Extra Attack can be used anytime the fighter takes the Attack Action
Action Surge is a separate ability that the player activates on their turn, when they want
I encourage you to look at the class features; never rely on a vague “people say”
How do I find people to play dnd with online? I’ve tried a couple times but can never seem to find any groups that are cool with new players. And I don’t know anyone irl who’s interested in dnd
There's #looking-for-players to look for groups that are looking for players, or #750812887697588356 if you wanna make a post to look for a DM
But besides that, finding a group takes time and gotta keep trying, especially if you're looking to be a player, as players easily outnumber the DMs

Hi I’ve been playing this solo adventure and I don’t know how to fight on a map
D&D isn't designed for solo adventures so there's no official guidance. The adventure itself should explain ideally
Is eating a problem in dnd?
If you mean in-game, I've found that most DMs just ignore that requirement entirely.
Optional rules in the Dmg
Characters in D&D do indeed eat
Rations are relevant for a certain style of play (usually called survival play)
I believe there’s a section for if the DM wishes to make wilderness survival more difficult
However, it's not uncommon for DMs to handwave that and just assume that the PCs are constantly foraging and hunting as they travel and rest in the wilderness, or staying at taverns and paying for food when in civilisation
Or how most people circumvent that by taking a feat that just allows them to find food or goodberry
i havent eaten in dnd ever since i started playing
most i ever did that even revolved around eating was check food for poison during downtime in the current quest
What about the bedroll? Is that ever necessary
If your character wants to have a comfortable nights sleep rather than sleeping on the dirt
You have to keep in mind that this is a role playing game. A lot of things exist, and are used, purely for the sake of making the world feel real. There is no mechanical benefit to sleeping in a bedroll vs sleeping on the ground, but if you were going to sleep in the woods in real life, you'd want a bed roll, wouldn't you?
that's a great way to wake up with some back pain.
Heyo everyone
Good question. Answer: It can help you sleep in a swamp or frozen tundra. Your DM could otherwise give you disadvantage:€
This depends game to game not just dm to dm.
My last game would handwave that in favor of town upkeep costs since the megadungeon was only 6 hours away and the party would (try) to leave before sundown.
The game before that and the new game I'm working on will use survival as a core feature. Food will be tracked and so will weight, armor type, the amount of space items take up, how long light will last, and sanity. (Underdark cave exploration and cannibalism game)
Ask your dm, literally every time for anything, they are the primary authority, not us.
Im trying to play dnd over mobile discord who has a game going
What are the best books to get for new players?
Get the free Basic Rules first.
If you like the game then the first book you should get is the Player's Handbook (PHB).
what about coupon codes to buy more digital books?
What about them?
where are they?
¯_(ツ)_/¯
I have the Dungeon Master Guide, Players handbook and Monsters Manual... any others?
Tasha's Cauldron of Everything and Xanathar's Guide to Everything.
D&D Beyond hasn't done any coupons for a few years now. They usually just have sales every couple of months
Tasha's Cauldron of Everything and Xanthar's Guide to Everything would be next recommended items
beyond that, really just depends on what you want/are interested in getting
Monsters of the Multiverse if you want additional player races
Thanks.... I am really enjoying learning and playing
Hey what class would you guys recommend for my first time playing?
Any can be fun for a newcomer! If you are worried about being overwhelmed, try fighter, barbarian or rogue.
Any class can work for a first timer. What are you interested in playing? Do you want to use magic, a sword, a bow, or a mix?
The reason why fighter, barbarian or rogue are often suggested for newcomers is that most of their subclasses don't get spells. As soon as you get some spells, the amount of required reading goes up.
I would preferably play a Human with a sort of mixed abilities
Okay, what do you mean by that? Think about a fictional fantasy setting you enjoy and where your character would it in there.
The class can come later
If you want a mix of magic and metal, then Paladin, (Hexblade) Warlock or (Eldritch Knight) Fighter could be good picks
I'd add ranger as another option to that list.
Or arcane trickster
I've never really played and I dunno how or where to start. Any tips?
Find a dm in #looking-for-players
Almost all games accommodate new players, do not be afraid to ask them for help.
Thank you

Anything can be fun for a newcomer, just gotta see what speaks to you.
But don't ever let anyone tell you that going with Ye Olde Master of Whoopass (aka, fighter) is a "boring" option. Paladin was my first ever class back in 1996, and it's never a bad option.
.
how does the movement and position work in combat or in normal things? i didn't understand it even though i read them. does bots like avrae calculate them? what about resting?
Are you asking how to track positioning for online games?
I would go to #dnd-rules for more detailed information.
The gist is that each turn a player should have about 30ft of movement on their turn. This can be demonstrated on a grid where each grid square is 5ft^2.
You do not need a grid, it's useful if you really care about where exactly each entity is.
These are very disconnected questions, so I'm not really sure what you are asking. Would you be able to clarify what aspects are confusing you?
yeah, in discord particularly
Many tables use VTTs (Virtual Tabletops) to track the player's location in battle. Some examples of these are Roll20 or Foundry
They're basically websites that exist to keep track of where your characters are. Your DM will likely pick a method and organize how it's used
Combat is typically tracked using maps or figurines. Its possible to play using only "theater of the mind" but very difficult. Most people prefer to have some sort of visual representation, using the tools DOSH has mentioned

ok
Do you guys have any advices for someone who wants (and probably will) start DMing ?
I would recommend by first heading over to #dm-discussion to ask for DMing advice.
I am a newer DM and here's some tips I learned along the way:
- Run one of the starter kit box sets. It will help you learn faster.
- The pre-written campaigns are a framework. Even with the box sets you will need to use your imagination to improve on the spot with your players.
- Remember the game is a collaboration between you and the players. You should not force them to do something, and should be able to adapt to what they want to do.
- Check out Sly Flourish's Lazy DM guides. Using his Notion templates was a gamechanger for me.
- Watch a lot of Youtube videos by other DM's particularly for the campaign you are running to get creative ideas on how to motify it for your table.
Greetings I have no idea how to play (sort of) I kinda played once but not with a good group but still was fun

Hey I’m also new
hello
i made my first char sheet and i just wanted some feedback https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/105936866
Tanking your constitution score is a risky move.
Sorcerer’s already have low HP, and a negative CON modifier means you’re losing even more.
none of the party has detect poison
:)
I… don’t see the relevance there. 😅
isnt con used for general endurance, hold on lemmie get my scources up
most sources cited more sickness and poison resistance as the main things that are connected to it
but i just saw it as overall endurance
Constitution also determines your hit points
Your DM is mistaken or has changed some rules for some reason
its their 3rd time
For a sorcerer:
Hit Points at 1st Level: 6 + your Constitution modifier
Hit Points at Higher Levels: 1d6 (or 4) + your Constitution modifier per sorcerer level after 1st
With a CON mod of -1, your 2nd-level max HP of 10 is reduced to 8.
You’ve given up 20% of your health.
hmmm yes, keeping things for all ages means no swearing, good to note
lemmie rephrase that then
one of my party members said that if by any chance a single eldritch blast comes my general derection, i would be completely done for
You do have Draconic Resilience to help balance it out again, but still…
I never make a character without CON in the top three.
ill keep that in mind
But if you understand the risk and want to take it anyway, best of luck to you.
Cons also good to have just because a lot of saving throws end up being constitution
why do i feel the urge to make a character based of the dwarves in the game deep rock galactic
The rest of it looks fine, though.
Because that's interesting
I’d maybe consider swapping one of your ranged cantrips for a melee choice.
why do i legit wanna use it though
The idea of a character that just really likes a bad corporate job they're on sounds funny and could be interesting
Just some barbarian with a pickaxe that doesn't know better
lmao
dm is upper management, im just imagining the whole pary just chanting "mushroom mushroom mushroom"
drg campaign?????
"We're rich!"
maybe i will make one, seems fun
Dose anyone he a small group to join ?

i hope you are obsessed with the handbook lol
If you want to find a game here, that channel explains how to do so.
i remember vividly a long time ago in a campaign, i was served a drink in a bar and i asked the dm "can i roll 1d20 to determine the tastiness of this drink" they said sure and.... nat1. the dm then explains "your drink tastes like urine but you are so thirsty you drink it anyway". we engage in miniscule amounts of tomfoolery
Kinda
I have my favorite of every class except ranger and artifesr
one time we were trapped in a void and we built a house out of wood from cast bonfire
Personally like ranger/bloodhunter, lots of damage die and no way you will ever survive
Me?
Nah, me
We have #character-discussion for folks that want to chat character concepts. This channel is for new-to-D&D folks to ask questions and get pointed to useful resources to help get them started,

How long does temporary hp last for the fighting spirit feat for samurai? Is it just during your turn? So its really for oppurtunity attacks
What does it say
Okay it doesn’t say anything
In that case it’s until a long rest
Or you lose them which is much more likely
Temporary hp lasts until depleted by damage or a long rest
temp hp is temp hp no mattwr the source. It never stacks from multiple sources
Does it say that somewhere or we have to guess
Basic rules, chapter 9, combat. There is a subsection on damage and healing
“Unless a feature that grants you temporary hit points has a duration, they last until they're depleted or you finish a long rest.”
Fighting spirit also says it gives advantage on weapon attack rolls for one turn, that just means every time I attack on my turn I get advantage on whether or not I can hit them right its not damage
Yep

I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube. It's linked above.
Ok
what should I do, I got an one piece campaign with 3 new players and one experienced, but I cant find a new DM after out first one left after session 2, should I just restart the campign and find a DM that way? or is it better to find someone who can continue the current story and build upon it
Why aren't you DMing it if you created this One Piece campaign?
An anime-based campaign is very niche and given that there aren't that many DMs (compared to the number of players), you are going to have a very hard time find a DM who's going to DM an One Piece campaign and one that you created.
I joined that campaign as a new player (I forgot to include myself in the original message as a new one), the campaign is the one the first DM made, is it recommended to transfer campaign between DMs?
My question still applies. A new DM isn't going to likely join a campaign that they have no creative control over (other than a published prewritten one).
okay, we will restart it, thanks
So what's the issues you're having with the Starter Kit?
What is confusing?
The rule book was written for new players in mind.
That's vague still.
The book is written in natural language not legalese.
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.

I am taking a look at the Fighter Rune Knight subclass and I am somewhat confused regarding what the Frost Rune actually does
I mean this part "For 10 minutes, you gain a +2 bonus to all ability checks and saving throws that use Strength or Constitution"
What counts as an ability check?
There's basically three main rolls in D&D- saving throws, attack rolls and ability checks.
Ability checks are ones that say things like 'Make a strength (athletics) check'
Such as in:
A grappled creature can use its action to escape. To do so, it must succeed on a Strength (Athletics) or Dexterity (Acrobatics) check contested by your Strength (Athletics) check.
Hi I’m new and have a speech problem, was looking for a game where I can use text instead of talking
I have some dnd questions where should I ask
Have a look for Play by Post games
you can have a look in our #find-a-game channels
There are Play by Post (pbp) and text D&D games around but they are a bit harder to find, and some groups might allow you to reply with text as part of a spoken game, but just need to have good systems set up. So it'll be a bit harder but doable, and others have similar issues. I'd advise searching the #looking-for-players for "pbp" or 'post' or 'text' to see if any games are tagged as such
itll often be abbreviated to pbp
So one is im a druid right and i wanna know if it’s possible to make a wildshape that would be like a beast from the new transformers movie and if so how would that work
what level are you atm?
k one sec
https://www.dndbeyond.com/monsters?filter-type=0&filter-type=2&filter-search=&filter-cr-min=1&filter-cr-max=3&filter-armor-class-min=&filter-armor-class-max=&filter-average-hp-min=&filter-average-hp-max=&filter-is-legendary=&filter-is-mythic=&filter-has-lair=&filter-source=1 heres a list of all the creatures in the basic rules that you can turn into at your level, have a look to see if any fit what you want
keep in mind that you can easily reflavour a creature to be mechanical
Okay
Im thinking boar
thats totally doable if your character has seen a boar, which given how common they are i think it would be very easy to convince your dm that your character would have seen a boar before the start of the campaign
Where can i share some dnd items me and my dm have come up with
Am i allowed to post a google doc
i think so yeah
I have this cross bow that shoots boomerangs how would i make that in dnd beyond
Like as a weapon option
youd have to make it as a homebrew weapon
hover over your account name at the top right, click homebrew in the dropdown that appears, and select "create homebrew magic item"
make the item
Hey everyone I'm new to D&D have yet to play my first campaign but just wanted to get some tips from anyone who can help or see if anyone would want to play
have you read the basic rules?
Yeah I have still alot to grasp since I've never actually sat down to play yet my buddy wants to have our first campaign soon so he's setting up everything since he's the DM
Im also on my first campaign and just from what i have seen and stuff just don’t forget to have fun and if you have any ideas ask your dm for example i have created a whole shop just bc i have created silly goofy items and talked to my dm about it
@barren topaz thanks I'll definitely try to think of some fun interesting ideas to bring up to my DM
Np 🙂
Would u like to see some of the items
Yeah sure just send them my way @barren topaz
Hi
I got two cool idea if you want them also lol
Hey, Where can I learn how to start in D&D?
Right here, if you check the pins in this Channel there are links to the basic rules and some video guides and other helpful stuff
Alright, thank you !!
sure send them my way
We can’t talk about these here
ok , sooooo I hope I do this correctly. I've gotten REALLY interested in DnD lately and I really want to get into it. Are there any tips and tricks that I should know ? I've began to do my own researches but all the informations are a bit overwhelming honestly. also sorry for my bad english I am not a fluent english speaker
.
Sure, if you have any specific questions feel free to ask.
well , one of the biggest question I have is like- how to actually get started ? I learned about this site roll20 if I remember correctly and there is this thing xhere you can look for groups. so do I just join a group and learn from here ? do I have to first make a character and then look for a group ? does it differ depending on the group ?
in general you look for a group then make the character, then reschedule 20 times and never end up playing
You need to find a group before making a character.
Roll20 is just a platform. I don't use the groups feature there. I would instead recommend looking in the #looking-for-players channel as they will tell you where to go if you get into a game.
i suggest trying to find people in real life who would be interested if possible
oooh I see , I'll go look in there later
For sure!
the problem is that where I live I can garante absolutely nobody knows about the game. Even my best friends probably wouldn't have the patience to last an entire game of Uno so dnd is out of the question
thanks a lot :')
I understand I have friends in South America and in Southeast Asia where finding groups is challenging.
What is your native language?
I don't really know what it's called in english but I speak Malagasy
That's the Philippines if I remember
no :') it's in Africa , Madagascar
Oooh
so anyways , I'll go check the channel ! thank you again ! <3
Ofc good luck and feel free to ask me or anyone else anything
what are epic levels?
This hobby is great
Levels over 20 according to Google.
It's not really necessary.
it's just for bragging rights right?
D&D fifth edition official rules do not go beyond level 20
Yeah I mean I guess? Lvl 20 is demigod level power... I can't imagine needing more than that.
There's no official definition for 'epic levels' in the current edition, instead the game uses tiers of play
Tier 1 - Levels 1 to 4 (Local heroes)
Tier 2 - Levels 5 to 10 (Heroes of the Realm)
Tier 3 - Levels 11 to 16 (Masters of the Realm)
Tier 4 - Level 17 and up (Masters of the World)
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dmg/creating-a-campaign#TiersofPlay
ah ok tysm
Typically moving from one tier to the next represents a jump in power of the player characters. A character going from level 4-5 will gain more or stronger abilities than say 5 to 6
another quick question- is it necessary to play dnd in voice calls ? I understand why it would be better it's just that I don't have a mic soo-
No, people play by text. It's usually called "play by post" (PBP) and will be how everyone plays typically
ooooh I see ! thanks !
Most people here do pbp?!
I didn't say most
I just said that it's not necessary to play by voice and people do play via text
Dog you said will be how everyone plays typically. That means much more than most.
Maybe I'm just tired or something
It's how everyone in the group plays
ie you don't usually have a mix of people playing by voice and people playing by text
Sorry if that was unclear
@crude musk I got what you meant
ok
Do I need to learn about the D&D world before creating a character?
Not really, the lore is huge and your DM may not be running a default setting so lore table specific
Ohh I see thanks
I’m assuming you’re trying to come up with a backstory for a PC
Yeah, I went to D&D beyond to make one but I didn't know what I was doing
So I thought I had to learn d&d lore to make one
You managed to make a character then? Or you still need help with the basics, there is a beginner help box you can click to help in the character creation screen
It took me some time but yeah I made one, thanks for the help
I will help someone through VC a bunch of rules and for free dm me if you want that help
That’s literally what this channel is for for new people to ask questions
I know but I mean if people don't understand the rules and need to see it visually like I did
Hey everyone. New to DnD. Anyone know a good place to start for beginners?
if i send the link of my character while its still being edited, can they edit it?
I can help if you don't understand the rules I can help through VC
Have a look at the pins in this channel for links to free basic rules and video guides and stuff
Get stuck with anything ask questions here and the nerd hive mind will endeavour to aid
I'll Holland if I need you thanks. ^^
@mr.ratty I'll view them thanks
Ok
Could someone help me make a backstory for my dnd guy?
Race class background?
oooo i love backstory help
I cant post messages in the looking for players channel
Are you replying to a post or making your own ad?
Check out the instructions in #find-a-game
Im new and want to find a game
I’m not sure if I just missed it in the book but if I’m playing with other ppl do we each get a turn until it’s the enemies turn?
Also if I have 3 enemies do they each get a turn until it’s my turn
The DM asks everyone to roll initiative and the DM rolls the initiative for the enemies.
The DM then sets the initiative order based on the results of the rolls.
The Dm then works down the iniative order list - on a player character's turn, the player tells the DM what their character does for their turn.
The DM manages combat, asking for rolls from players, rolling for monsters on each creature's turn and resolves the combat.
The DM continues through initiative order until the combat is resolved.
i'm not sure how others do this, but at our table we have one initiative for all enemies. we use index cards folded over the DM screen, the "rawr" card is for all enemies. So if you have 3 enemies they each go on the "rawr" card
That's a variant rule, but we try and keep things basic (as close to core, official rules) in this channel
the 3 enemies share the same initiative. We tried running it where they each had their own initiative order, but it took up a lot of time and it was easier for them to share an initiative turn. This was something we agreed on doing as a group though.
That is one way to run it, yes. But as noted that is an optional way to handle it. Normally each creature and player character has it's own place in the initiative order.
yes, exactly what UndyingNoob said
When you say based on the results of the rolls wdym
gotcha, i'm still looking around at all the channels, i don't know how i didn't know D&D had a discord, i think i found a home.
So the initiative order is set by who rolled what. Those who roll higher will go "first" in initiative order compared to those who roll lower.
So the intiaitive order is determined by the initiative rolls.
Oh ok, it doesn’t affect whatever they do after that right? For example if I want to attack and i initiate first I don’t get bonuses for rolls
You only need to roll initiative once - at the start of an encounter. Your characters only get the bonuses from what they have or if magic is cast on them to give them additinal bonuses. But initiative rolls do not in themselves give you additional attack bonuses.
You may want to read through the section on Combat in the the free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat
Can I just send the PDF?
You can link it here if you made it on dndbeyond
So human rogue criminal background, where did they grow up, how did they get their skills, how did they become a criminal or have ties to that world
Variant human, and I can't think of anything for any of that so idk
Is there really any difference between human and variant human tho?
Hi
The original Human gets a bunch of stats, while the variant Human gets a more customizable Feat. Pick the original Human if you're just starting out and feel overwhelmed by character creation, but if you're willing to do the leg work of looking through the Feat list, the variant Human can be more fun!
Good bc I already did all the stat stuff
Are there any character in popular media that you based this character off. Might give you some hints to write a backstory.
Narratively, they're all just human.
No one would be able to look at you and call you out as a "variant". 😛
Nope, I just jumped directly into making a character
Simple rogue background stolen from a book series I like “Jimmy the Hand is the son of a Krondor brothel worker and the leader of the Mockers, the Upright Man. He was raised in the brothel for a number of years until his Mother was killed by rough brawler. Jimmy then tracked down the man who killed his Mother and murdered him in revenge. He was then discovered by the Mockers and became a thief of quite some skill”
Nice and basic gives lots of room to modify it to fit different settings
Thanks
Yoo
Hi to all never played dnd but would be very interested to try it out is there some kind of place to find a beginner friendly group ? Thanks to all.

Hii
I am new to dnd. I just recently played a barbarian And i would like to ask if form of the beast moves are amenable to two weapon fighting? Cuz i feel like they do less daamgae than my weapons
Unfortunately, those rules only apply for weapons that you are holding or weilding, so Natural Weapons don't gain their benefits. Also, without a Feat, you would need them to have the Light property, which they do not. The Claws are kinda trying to confer similar benefits, albeit a little more powerfully.
You are right, a weapon is more likely to do more damage - but that's why all of the features have some extra bonus:
Bite - Regaining HP, so useful if you are low on health
Claws - a free extra attack, so useful if you are trying to plow through a large number of weak enemies
Tail - Reach (longer range), and a retaliatory parry
Are there any fish races? I didn't see any aquatic races on the lists
Locathath are a fish-like humanoid race. There also Triton and Sea Elf which are aquatic races.
@fresh fable I think I made a pretty ok one, what do u think?
No bad, 3 magic rings to start with is a bit much but you can change it when you find a DM
Yeah you'll want to get rid of the rings. Not many DMs will approve having those magic items right from the start.
Water genasi, triton, locathath, sea elf, merfolk, and I think grung
I just wanted feather falling to start and I get the others later, but I didn't know how to put that in the character sheet so I just equipped them all
When you find a game you’re DM will let you know if you start with any extra equipment such as magic items but I like the idea that a thieves guild gives out rings to aid them. And you get more as you get higher in the guild. Nice work
Hello, can anyone help out, I am looking for D&D base in the Warhammer universe, any pages or channels anyone can recommend
Youre after a ttrpg of warhammer?
Yes Fantasy or 40k
I’ll tag you in #non-dnd-topics
What does homebrew mean exactly
User-made content, typically made by the DM.
Changes to the base rules whether it’s something simple like bonus action to drink a potion, to making whole new classes and races
You might also see it used to refer to something like a user-made setting or story as well.
It's a colloquial term, so there's no strict definition. 😅
But in my head, it refers primarily to rules and game mechanics.
@fresh fable should I change my PC to a different race? Or is it ok as variant human
Variant human is just human. It's only "variant" as an optional variant in terms of game mechanics.
Huh my bad i thougght i was in dm discussion
With anything specific, or just in general?
Just in general, I touched on the subject in middle school cuz it seemed like fun but I never got into it
Like I really wanna join a campaign but I need like complete guidance

Huh well this is fairly interesting

Well I'm new but not new
There are plenty of discord servers for all kinds of things
Welcome new people
Thanks for the welcome all
how can i find people to play? i've made a water genasi druid
Check out #find-a-game
i am new to the sever and kind of new to D&D
Welcome!
How far have you come in your journey so far?
Can I play a campaign with online people on dnd beyond ?
Sure, but that's dependant on the DM who sets up the game.
Can me and you play? Or no
Use #find-a-game
hellooo
where do i make a character for a game (what website)
Have you read the free Basic Rules yet?

Is there a type of necromancer class? Would the warlock be closest to this?
I have visions of raising undead minions to do my bidding...
Necromancer wizard.
A hexblade warlock can also summon certain spirits.
ok, I see the wizard class. Would it be a multiclass thing to add necromancy later on?
Using the character builder on the D&D website
Wizards choose their subclass, an Arcane Tradition, at level 2.
School of Necromancy is one of the possible choices.
thanks
The free Basic Rules only comes with the evocation arcane tradition (aka sub-class). To get the rest, you need to "unlock" them by buying the Player's Handbook or buy the individual ones on D&D Beyond.
If you have an advantage on a attack roll, how do you know how big is the advantage?
Is it always 2?
it is aleays 2 dice
Ok ty just wanted to make sure
elven accuracy gives you what people like to call "super advantage", where you reroll the lower die when you attack with advantage, but that is it
Wait but if I roll a d20 do I reroll it or is it only if I roll 2d6 for example (multiple cubes)
@shy rune
Advantage is for specifically d20
you can't have advantage/disadvantage on not d20s
Oh right I forgot
there are builds that get a 3rd d20 when they have advantage.

Ultimately it boils down to you playing a game with friends that involves collaborative story telling that uses some dice to add some randomness and risk.

Are there options to find online dnd sessions?
Thanks 🙂
No. Just enough to know how character sheets work and general game mechanics.
Alright. Okay
Everything else you kind of pick up as you play - although the more effort you spend becoming familiar with the rules usually pays off with better games IMO.
The sad part is that I made the mistake of investing into Cyberpunk 2020 lore before diving into this
I assume that's gonna limit my intake of the nuances of the lore, right?
Oh yeah, don't get lost in lore! Unless you really like that.
Many D&D groups don't follow any formal established lore and just come up with what makes sense for them in their own games/settings.
D&D has a ton of lore (game's been around since the 70's) but there's no need to memorize or dive into that unless that's something you really enjoy.
We even have a lore channel (#dnd-lore )
I thought to get invested in a setting you'd need lore
Or even creating a setting in the first place
You need to ask your DM because they're the one who decides what's official lore in their campaign setting.
... and if I made the mistake of being the DM?
All I need to get my players going is a plot hook - "Get the thing from the vault and bring it back to paying client".
I don't have to delve into the great politics of the world or the legends of how it was created - unless that's something our group decides would be fun.
Ah
DM'ing is just another way to play D&D - a bit more work, but it's kind of fun putting together a session and guiding the players through a fun story and seeing where it all goes!
alright. I assume it's to be a universal set of rules?
The whole DMing and player action thing
And if I were to DM in my own little universe that I've been punishing myself mentally over since the start of the pandemic, I'd be fine?
Yeah
Neat
can a creature with flyby essentially attack someone and then fly away in the same turn?
Yep
Anyone can do that flyby or not, but without flyby the creature you fly away from will get to make an opportunity attack against you
I see
I've been playing for 5 months by now and I thought all this time that if you used your move action once you couldn't walk anymore
#dnd-rules can help you parse out rules (and sometimes get into amazingly pedantic and technical arguments and discussions)
thank u
hi !! my friend and i r trying to find a dnd group to join, any advice ?
Read (carefully) #find-a-game - it has instructions on how to use our #looking-for channels.
thank u !
You're welcome and I hope you both find a great group to play D&D with!
not new to dnd but relatively new to being a player
and class/subclass that would fit well with a kenku adopted by a librarian?
Wizard is the most academic class
is wizard newcomer friendly?
People consider it difficult to learn, because wizards have access to a wide variety of spells. You'll need to put in a bit of time to understand your known spells, and how your spellbook functions; more time than you would learning the mechanics of a more straightforward class like fighter anyway
hmmm i did some research and most of what I thought was confusing about wizards was actually sorcerer features
Such as?
Hi everyone I'm new to DND can anyone help me
What problem are you having?
Check #find-a-game
beyond this servers matchmaking channel as OldMan said, you could also look on the various LFG pages on facebook and reddit
Have a look in our #find-a-game channels
Ok
Hold on, I think you are mixing up a few things
wizard and sorcerer are two different classes
They are similar in that they are full spellcasters, however, their main features are different
They figured that out
They thought some sorc things were actually from wizard but they realised their mistake
Ok
How do I enter my foroum for new dnd party members again?
#find-a-game and read the instructions
I think they need to find their thread again
It should display under the channel name if you were active in it
How often do people respond to find a dm, I was a little dishearten when I saw a bunch submitted today with no responses?
There’s a lot more DMs than players, you can try being more proactive and also replying to posts in #looking-for-players
Do you need help with anything?
@fleet field thanks I will try that!
Is point buy official?
Yea
It's right there in the Basic Rules
do i need to make a feat make sense in my character lore
such as having a wizard be a magic initiate druid?
As a general rule of thumb, given that D&D is a game that focuses on telling stories, having your character choices make sense is often a good appropach
Some tables may want it but others will allow purely mechanical decisions
At least in my opinion it doesn’t focus on telling stories, rather telling stories is just a big part of it
That's what "focuses on" means
But so is optimisation and combat which could call for taking a feat that doesn’t necessarily make sense
it's a big part of the game
At least to me “focuses on” suggest that it’s the main focus
It’s up to interpretation tho
Hi i have a question
in the path of berserker, if we are in rage, we are in frenzy right? If we are frenzied, that means we can do another melee attack as bonus action. How is that different from two weapon fighting?
- You can chose to rage normally or to frenzy.
- you can use your heavy barbarian weapon to attack with a bonus action in frenzy and you add your strength modifier to damage
if i frenzied, do i stil lget the rage bonuses? also two weapon fighting can allow heavy wielding? sweet
Frenzy is like rage+
TWF doesn’t allow heavy weapons, that’s part of why frenzy is different
So resistance to piercing etc is still part?
Yes, anything you get from a normal rage is also part of frenzy
TWF means light weapons only, no str mod to damage on the bonus action
Frenzy: every melee weapon works.
the looking for dm posts do they clear out monthly?
weekly
each day the bot runs and removes posts that are a week old
if my character were to hold the shield on their back, would they be protected from back strikes?
No
The only effect of a shield is that if you don it and hold it in one hand (doing so will require your action), you gain a +2 bonus to your Armor Class
ah alright then, thanks for the answer
Im new to dnd i know some of the basics but i cant find a game to play any recomendations since all the games or roll20 are pay to play
Discord servers are a mixed bag in my experience. Sometimes you invite random games and have a bad time and leave before session 3 other times your in a new freind group for the next 10 years
do you have some good recomendations?
Thank you mous
I'm frequently looking for new players but my next few planned games are 18+ and I'm less comfy pugging those
honestly this is the best explanation of a group, but there is a middle ground between them for sure
Agreed. My personal experience has been rather polarized but that's probably because I pulled puggs from polarized places
i have only just done my first session of a campaign yesterday, i would say we all had fun in it but we def wont be friends for life, for however long the campaigns between us run though we are good friends
And sometimes that's all you can or want to ask of a table
and hey, better a good experience than a bad one
we are all playing D&D to have fun after all
honestly the most fun in my mind is building the character, specifically designing them in hero forge
I think there's a channel for that
yeah heroforge gallery
Also I just noticed the #find-a-game channel. That may be helpful if that's not just how you find the ones linked before
oh yeah prior to me finding the campaign im in right now i searched it for around 2 - 3 days for a GMT group
oh also how do i get an icon next to my name, just curious
#channels and roles at the top of the channels list
alright then thanks
Hi, I'm new, and I would like to get into a game as soon as I can!
should i buy a dice set or should i use the ones in dndbeyond
That’s generally up to you and your group.
Welcome! #find-a-game has instructions for finding a group here.
and if im getting dice do i need to get a thing to roll them into?
Depends how hard you throw your dice
what is the thing called
the thing i roll them into
I didn’t know there was a thing for that lol
A dice tray
You could also look at dice towers, too.
thanks

Hello! If I had one tip for getting into dnd....it would be to never be afraid to state your limits or ask questions...your dm and fellow players can't help you have fun and learn if we don't know we're doing it wrong
im new to dnd and making a character but my idea for them doesn't match any of the races. What should I do?
What's the idea
deer antlers and deer ears
Or fawn with the same stat block
thx
my advice is to be open minded.. alot of new folks watch stream games and think thats how it is... but like any creative work each DM is entirely different and run at different styles.
Was it Tashas cauldron of everything that had tools for making custom lineages
i for instance run it mundanely and low fantasy
And I run epic fantasy with over the top high magic where any bar will sell you a keg of health potion and most cities have flying carpets as taxi
we must battle now...
so would a druid be the best class then?
Thats up to what fantasy you want to fulfill. Do you wanna be a druid? Or does paladin of the woodland realm make you feel joy
You pick the contest I'll pick the ruleset
so the race doesn't matter that much?
i challenge you to medieval tax protocol...
fite me in guilders!
depends how you play.. if you wanna powerplay.. it has some importance.. personally i let people play whatever race they like and swap stats around..
ok 👍
Class race combo does have mathematical advantages but the difference is a small amount so play what's fun and talk to your dm. Communication is always key
thx again
Hii, excuse me i’m new and i lowkey really want to play a quick game but im unsure if i made my character right 🥲
I’m sorry for bothering both of ur chats
do you mean aesthetically or technically
Technically, like the stats and spell casts and all
sorry if i sound dumb im so new
Are wizards supposed to start with no spells?
i think a wizard that doesnt have spells is called a librarian
I’m on the same boat as you, so dw 😭
in all seriousness, what character generator are you using?
mee too
I’m a tad confused on the starting money too
You don't sound dumb, your new and asking important questions. It's my genuine pleasure to talk to folks like yourself and help them enjoy this hobby I have dedicated almost 20 year of my life too. Your doing great and your welcome here
How do you get spells as a starting wizard? Would an aristocratic noble wizard have learnt any spells
same
ive been playing D&D for 20 years and i made the same mistake so dont feel bad. if you go to your spells tab there should be a menu to open to select your spells..
you start with spells, as a wizard, if i remember right you get quite a wide selection of spells to start with and then you have to prepare a set number. dont quote me, i have an issue with edition bleed 😛
Cries in forever dm. I've never chosen a single spell in 20 years
same to be honest.. though i prefer other games...
Um, excuse me, where is the spells tab 🥲
mind if i IM you?
Meaning…?
meaning i send you an instant message.. more specifically pictures of D&D beyond
sorry im old.. we called it Ims not Dms..
Starting wealth is one of a few options and you need to ask your dm what system your using before you can know how to Calc. The dm may expect you to purchase your starting gear or have a flat starting gold amount for all players
Oh! Sure <3 it’s okay, that’d be helpful, thank you!
Ohh, so it depends on the campaign then?
It's here
Yes very much so. For ex I start all my players with between 40 and 100 gold baised on there level and I generally work with each one for what level of gear they start with
and i give them a turnip if they are lucky....
Ok, so i’m in the spells section, is it okay to put in any? How would i do for the calculations and stuff? How much spells is a newbie/starting wizard chara supposed to have?
The contrast between our styles is amazing and probably helpful to see. How do you handle the 4th wall and players asking direct dm questions? Seems like something newer players should be comfy doing but ide like your opinion
its automatic, but i think you should have as a rule of thumb twice the choices of the spellslotsl, so if you have 2 level 2 spellslots try to have 3-4 spells..
This channel is for helping newcomers get to grip with the basics
It's not for discussing DM'ing styles, that's what we have #dm-discussion for
also diversify utility and combat...
Each casting class will have a chart and a list of available spells
Fair enough.
Meaning? I don’t understand 🥲
what are you using, D&D beyond?
@heady locust You're playing a wizard, right?
i can but i was going to post pictures..
@heady locust here is the section on wizard spellcasting
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/wizard#Spellcasting-410
You want to read through that section as it covers how you know what spells you can take
If it refers to your spell slots, you can find those here, in the wizard table
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/wizard#TheWizardTable
Wizard starts with 6 spells in their spell book and they can prepare a certain number each day
luckily astrin D&D beyond does it all automatically
It doesn't do it all and an understanding of the rules is still important
Not for wizard cause you can add to many spells at lvl 1
DDB operates under the assumption that anyone using the tools still understands the game rules
Can i have a picture mayb? I work better when i see an example what i have to do 🥲
sure.. thats why i advised earlier this
may i DM/Im you?
The important things to remember as a wizard
- You start with 6 spells in your spell book
- You add 2 spells each time you level. You can also add spells from scrolls and spellbooks you find
- You can't add spells that are a higher level than the highest spellslot you have (see the wizard table for spell slots)
- Each day you can prepare (have ready to cast) a number of spells equal to your Wizard Level + your Spellcasting Ability Modifier (Intelligence)
@sweet hinge Please stop pestering people to PM them, it's inappropriate
For example, a level 1 wizard with +4 Int knows 6 spells and can prepare 5 of them each day. They have a total of 2 spell slots of first level and also know 3 cantrips
But that wrong a lvl 1 wizard has 6 spells in their book they have 2 spell slots and can prepare int mod+wiz lvl number pre day
as i said, ill share pictures of my character sheet. but not publically
Good general rule; if you wouldn't be comfortable sharing them publically, you shouldn't offer to send them via private message
Now moving on
Ok wait i’m slowly understanding from the reading
3 cantrips, and 2 level 1 spells. Can they not learn 1 level 2 spell or it depends?
Wizard can be a bit daunting
It’s okay! I love learning, it’s fun too, so ty for helping <3
Not quite
They learn 3 cantrips and can cast up to two spells of first level
Spellslots are the batteries you put in your spells
You can know more spells than you have spellslots
Let's take a 3rd level wizard with +5 intelligence
- They have 4 first level spell slots and 2 second level spell slots
- They know 3 cantrips and 10 levelled spells (6 from first level, 2 from second level, 2 from third level)
- The spells they know can't be higher than 2nd level because that's the highest level spell slot they have
- Each day they can prepare 8 spells (3rd level + 5 Intelligence)
- Of those 8 spells, they can only cast a maximum of 6 because that's how many spells slots they have
- They can put any spell slot into any spell to cast it as long as the spell slot is the same level or higher than the spell
Does that all make sense?
i think the guy said hes a visual learner.. try posting some pictures.
Hm, wait, sometimes i process slow 🥲
I'm good explaining things in the way I best know how
i wouldnt use the word slow, i would say, "methodical thinker"
No worries, there's zero rush. I numbered things so you can more easily flag which bits don't make sense more easily
I’m not understanding how a wizard can get 6 spell slots at the beginning
Those exist of 3 catnips, and 2 level one spells right? Doesn’t that make it 5 spell slots?
That's just a part of character creation. The rules say as a wizard you start with 6 spells in your spellbook at level 1, so you do (plus your 3 cantrips)
Spellslots don't determine how many spells you know
Oh, so i can know 6 spells, but the spells i can equip is 5? I can switch around then?
This is why wizard can be confusing
You can have 6 spells in your spellbook
Be able to prepare 5 of those spells each day
And be able to cast up to 3 of those 5 spells
Being able to cast it is determined by int and level, doesnt it?
Think of it like this: the spells you know are all the cars you have in your garage.
The spells you've prepared are all the cars you brought from your garage to the race track.
Your spell slots are the gasoline you have to fuel your cars
Single best analogy to date
So what im getting is this: i can prepare spells based on what i know. I can know 6 spells, but only use 5 of them for a number of insert casting times?
You got it!
Finally getting it <3 thank you!
Wizard is the most complicated spell caster in that regard
The spells i can know is three catnips + level 1/2 spells or are they supposed to all be spells? For the 5 spells i can use, does it have to include catnips?
It's however many cantrips the wizard table says you know at that level + 6 levels at level 1 + 2 levels each level after that
How many you can prepare is your wizard level + your intelligence modifier
Cantrips always count as prepared, right?
No, cantrips don't go you in your spellbook at all
So preparing doesn't factor into it
To use DOSH's is amazing analogy
At level one you have six cars in your garage (plus three motorbikes, your cantrips)
With a +4 Intelligence, you can fit five cars on your trailer (4 + wizard level of 1)
When you get to the track, you have enough fuel to race three of your cars, but it can be the same car three times, or three different cars
I’m stealing this analogy. Mine was always the McDonald’s dollar menu, but it fell apart with higher spell slots and upcasting.
I'm honored haha 💀
Wizard is a tough first class, but it's so fun that it's worth the initial headache!
I’m excited to get the hang of it <3 just a question, the mod for int to use the fuel/number of times i can cast the spells is not the saving throw, right?
Correct. It's just the modifier
Level 1 wizard with +3 in Intelligence:
- Knows three cantrips
- Has six spells of the first level in their book
- Can prepare four (wiz lvl + INT mod) of those first level spells per long rest
- Can cast two first level spells per long rest
And cantrips all the live-long day. I think that's right.
Thank you! Could i ask the rules for the casting times? I’m seeing instant and resting and such. In a game, what’s the time limit for that?
The casting time rules are explained here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/spellcasting#CastingTime
Individual spells have different casting times specified in their info. Alarm say, takes a minute, where as Firebolt is a single action.
If you're asking when you get your spells back, you need a long rest.
Question what is the basis of health for an average starter off pc
That depends on your class.
The basic rules for that are explained here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#HitPointsandHitDice
What you need from your class is your Hit Die size.
Your character race and age don't affect their hit points
For a fighter, that's a d10.
Only their class and constitution
So at first level, you have the max number of that die (10, for you) plus your constitution modifier.
Wait, do casting times uses real timer?
No, everything is in-game time
Most casting times are 1 Action, Bonus Action, or Reaction
Some take minutes, hours, or days, but that passes in game
Time in-game moves as fast or as slow as it needs to tell the story.
Same as when Frodo & co crossed the mountains in minutes on screen.
How do you get those btw? Bonus action or reaction
Have you read the basic rules yet?
Not really 🥲 not a fan of reading
D&D does involve at least some reading
Only do it when i have to (occasionally checking/making sure)
Is it the spellcasting rules?
I would suggest checking out the following sections
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat
https://www.dndbeyond.com/compendium/rules/basic-rules/using-ability-scores
You fundementally will not be able to play D&D without reading the rules
Bonus actions and reactions are both described here specifically:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#YourTurn
The short version is: in combat, your turn lasts 6 seconds. During those 6 seconds you can take
- 1 action
- 1 bonus action
After everyone's taken a turn, that's one round. Once per round, you can take - 1 reaction
Got it, i’ll read them now
Note that you can only take a bonus action if something in the game says you can (such as a spell with a casting time of 1 bonus action).
A reaction can only be taken in response to a specific trigger. The only reaction all characters can use by default is the opportunity attack, which is triggered by an enemy leaving your reach.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#OpportunityAttacks
Reactions aren't strictly once per round, though. The official rule is that once you use a reaction, you can't use another until the start of your next turn.
(Which depending on the timing could technically result in two reactions in a single round -- before and after your turn.)
Haha true, but let's not get into the weeds here
