Are you trying to find a way to circumnavigate the "druids can't wear metal armor" rule? Every DM I've ever played with is happy to ignore it
Oh ok good cause I had a funny idea where my warforged Druid character integrates the armor and just get hair made of chains
That's cute! Check with your DM and hopefully they'll let you
I’ll keep that in mind thanks
Some people take that blurb as flavor to ignore, while others consider it rules written in stone. It depends on the table!
It would make sense to circumnavigate because I am metal
A bit silly for a Warforged to be unwilling to don metal, I agree haha
Me and my little brother are new to dnd and we're really interested in learning how to play any advice?
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
But if you've got any specific questions, ask away!
Thanks!
Are you allowed to have a multiclass character btw or is that game specific? This is the most I was looking for tbh-
It’s a silly rule (not really a rule more lore) as druids will use metal weapons and magic components your DM will prob allow you to wear metal if they are nice
Some tables will allow it and some won't! It's generally suggested for a completely new player to avoid multiclassing, though. It's not always the easiest to understand the interactions between managing both classes at once, and can be a little too complicated.
Ohhh ok! Thanks!
I'll probably edit my character sheet per game when i get more experience and start multiclassing then!
Lots of friends want me to start and my brother wants to join too
Yeah, if you haven't actually joined a game yet, I'd suggest coming up with a few loose ideas for characters.
Then you can work with your DM to pick the best fit for that campaign and finalize any remaining details.
We're using dnd beyond to keep track of characters I jus made my own for our first one hes making his right now
What'd you make?
I have to edit it buts its the twilight elf thing (i don't remember the exact name 😭 ) warlock paladin class cause they fit my needs for the character pretty well and uses a trident long sword combo
He also knows either primordial or celestial like as the language modifier
Why warlock+paladin specifically?
Both of their descriptions fit my needs for the character plus his description
Also shouldn't paladin and warlock work well together? Or did I misread it a lot-
Generally, it's advisable to stay with a single class for a new player. Multiclassing adds a lot of complexity.
And yes, Paladin and Warlock do work fairly well together mechanically, as they both use CHR. However, they are also two classes where the DM is encouraged to think a little more about the roleplay while thinking mechanically, because a Paladin's power is bound to their oath, and a Warlock's power is bound to their pact. So more...thematically challenging.
I was jus curious about that I'll be sticking to paladin until i get more experience lmao-
Good idea 🙂
A lot about how your character is seen simply comes down to how they're described, too.
Dungeon master gets to get more experience with that tho
You could have a single-classed paladin, and simply say they've entered into a pact with their god.
Or a single classed-warlock, and simply say they have a strong faith in their patron.
I jus want access to certain abilities as well lmao-
Who’s can help learn to play in here?
Have you read the free Basic Rules yet?
That’s a good reason to multiclass, then.
Yes
Are you having some trouble with the rules?
No I’m just new I would like a dm and some players to play with and learn how the game actually works
If you want to try your hand at DMing, head on over to #dm-discussion to ask for advice.
- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.
- Learn how to be a Dungeon Master with this YouTube video or D&D Beyond article.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- Decide what kind of campaign you want to run. Here’s a few good options for new DMs.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
Can a dungeon master play the game like the player or no?
I'd say it's generally risky to try and do both.
It's doable, but there's some clear pitfalls.
Will I might try it but I want to try to be a player first
It's generally frowned upon for DMs to have a player character (PC) in the adventure they're DMing because they have knowledge the players don't (such as where all the monsters, traps, and treasure are located).
Ok
Mornin'
The DM already plays all of the NPCs (non-player characters) and monsters that aren't PCs...
I know but I want to try to be a player first
☝️ Sometimes that difference can be perceived as the DM favoring their own character over others, too.
Then be a player first before you try your hand at DMing. That way you can learn the rules and how the game is played under the guidance of a DM.
Do y’all have a spot or no?
Check out #find-a-game

Hey just wondering, what channel do i go to if i want clarification on something like a rule or ability?
Thx
Hi? I am sorry to bother, I never play DND but I been curious about it, is it any fun?
Yes yes it is
We wouldn't be here if it wasn't fun ☺️
That is great, I been trying to find people as I am a very curious person
It would be worth picking up a starter set, they're relatively inexpensive and give you some decent places to start.
Some of us have been playing D&D for decades!
Basic rules are free
Thought I must ask and sorry if this is completely dumb. I am a huge, (and I mean in a nut shell) are there necromancy in dnd? I haven’t looked deep into it yet, I am a big necromancy fan, in any game
Yes, necromancy is a school of magic as part of the wizard class.
There is! Check out the wizard class in the basic rules
You can play in person or online — people do play virtually as well, especially during the pandemic.
That is awsome@to know I kinda live. Far away from normal people.
It's not really a board game in the traditional sense.
At its simplest, it's just you and your friends telling a story together.
The top link here is a good intro. 👇

Hey sorry for interrupting! Would you guys advise a newer dm to add self written quests to add onto an official campaign? Or just play it as the book says for a first game?
The advantage of a pre-written is you aren't obliged to write...but it's totally encouraged to riff and add, particularly if it serves your players better. As long as the DM is aware that they are taking on the responsibility for balance and pacing, so can't blame it on the book anymore 😄 I usually replace rather than add.
Cool thanks guys :))
Hello, I want to start to play dungeons and dragons, is there any good starter pack or something like that?
If someone can recommend me something, that would help out a lot
Yes, there's the Starter Set you can buy from stores and online.

This should give you a better idea of what D&D is:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/begin/en
Anyone have anytips for a first time dm running the dragon at icespire peak campaign?
Read the module in full. Take a look at YouTube guides. Even if you don't use them as is, they might get your own gears moving.
?dmtips
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
I just finished making my character
Nice! What kind?
What class?
I don't play much DnD, only played twice, but im going to try my first game as dm! Im making a campaign right now
Hay y’all I’m looking for a group that me and my BF can play in we both are fairly new so we will need help just dm me if interested
Have a look in our #find-a-game channels
If you are not experienced, you may want to use a pre-made adventure
yeah but, i kinda already have item ideas
You can always attach homebrew ideas/plots on top of a prewritten adventure.
Can save time when most of the framework is already in place.
eh, i want to just try my own story Y'know
Yeah sure! D&D has a lot of creative possibilities - good luck and have fun!
i created a short campaign and the person iw as gonna play with cant do it rn, sad
been playing dnd on and off, still a relative newcomer. have covid atm so am looking for a nice group that needs a bard : ))
When spells say humanoid does it mean things that are similar build to humans like goblins and eleves
Yeah
Two arms, two legs, and a head.
Well…
Sorry, let me back that up.
When a spell says humanoid, it’s specifically referring to the humanoid creature type — one of 13.
That creature type is characterized by having a humanoid shape (two arms, two legs, and a head).
But some monsters may belong to other creature types even if they fit that description.
Your typical giant, for example, unsurprisingly has a creature type of giant.
Zombies and skeletons have the undead creature type.
You can find the full list of creature types here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/monsters#Type
As a player you probably won’t know an individual monster’s creature type, and that’s fine. The mystery is part of what makes the game fun.
But if you see something that doesn’t have that shape, you may want to cast a different spell.
Would I go to Homebrew discussion to talk about how I would create a specific type of monster?
Yes indeed 👍
Ok
How do I know which spells can be cast using an arcane focus
You’d first need a rule that tells you you can use an arcane focus.
Like a wizard’s Spellcasting feature.
That will tell you which spells you can use that for.
(In a wizard’s case, it can be used for wizard spells.)
You’d then need to check the spell’s material components.
If it doesn’t have any, a focus does nothing.
It also can’t be used if the material components have a gold cost or if they’re consumed.
So a great old one Warlock can’t cast Evards Black Tentacles without the giant tentacle because it’s not a Warlock spell even though great one lets them use it
@kindred dust hi
Spells added from a subclass are counted as spells for that class even if they do not appear on the class's list of spells.
The Great Old One lets you choose from an expanded list of spells when you learn a warlock spell. The following spells are added to the warlock spell list for you.
Hi there! We ask that you don't randomly ping folks (and in general avoid pinging folks).
oh that’s my friend
they invited me here
was simply greeting them and showing that i have joined
Hi ratthew
hello
Then direct message them next time - the server is not intended to be a "ping my friends" server.
But welcome!
Yeah, in this case they can, because the feature giving you the spell says it counts as a warlock spell.
In general, any spell you learn through your class counts as a spell for that class.
what exactly is adventure's league? from what i can understand it's just a game using rules as written right?
It’s specifically designed for organized play sessions.
?al
The D&D Adventurers League is an ongoing official campaign for Dungeons & Dragons. It uses the fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons rules, and features the Forgotten Realms setting. You can play D&D Adventurers League games literally anywhere. Players use the fifth edition rules to create a character and bring that character to games anywhere D&D Adventurers League play is happening.

does XdY mean X is the number of dice and Y is the dice side?
It’s commonly used for things like conventions or game stores.
thanks
The idea is that by using a specific set of rules, you can then take your character around to any Adventurer’s League game and join in.
You can find that in the rules here, btw: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/introduction#GameDice
More like a West March than your typical game of D&D, sure.
In that you may not be playing with the same specific people every session.
But different from a West March in that you’re not all really playing in a shared world together.
The outcome of one session won’t necessarily have any impact on any other, except for your own character’s story.
Whereas in a West March, if one group liberates a castle, for example, that impacts every group who interacts with the castle.

question about campaign worlds. i know my character needs to fit the role of the campaign worlds but how would i know what campaign world the AL i played at. would that be be said at the beginning of the adventure. sorry i have more dumb questions but slowing it down abit.
#adventurers-league is probably the best place to ask if you’re looking to get started with AL.
Haven’t really played it myself, but I believe they have different seasons, and each season uses one of the official campaign settings.
I wanna play a dnd thing for a bit and see if I like it. I got two chars so idk
I know the basics and all
But like the other stuff is just unknown to me
You could try joining what’s known as a one-shot.
A short, self-contained adventure that’s typically completed in a single session.
Oh nice
thank you tuna 😄
Also, what about being a dungeon master? Do you have to have an Manual to know how to be a dm? Or can you just like wing it with your own story and stuff
hi
How does someone become a dm
- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.

How/ where could one join a one-shot?
Does it say anywhere that Xanthars book and Tashas book are official or if they’re just optional?
They’re both.
You could try searching in #looking-for-players.
You might also find communities that run one shots in #looking-for-community.
Like can a dm say Eldritch Adept isn’t an official feat so you can’t use it?
Feats in general are an optional rule, even in the PHB.
But yes, a DM can also choose not to allow any specific feat if they wish.
Or even a whole book.
hi 🙂
In general a one level dip in Warlock wouls be better anyways
You’d need two levels to get invocations.
But technically multiclassing is also an optional rule.
But if I use the eldritch adept feat I get it first level right
If you’re playing a character that gets a feat at first level, sure.
Variant human, for example.
Which again, is an optional rule. 😛
If your campaign uses the optional feat rules from chapter 6, your Dungeon Master might allow these variant traits, all of which replace the human’s Ability Score Increase trait.
no ones in find a gsme so im asking here does anyone need a rogue or bard
Asking to join a game is only allowed in specific channels, as explained in #find-a-game.
The second message there has recommendations on where to start. #find-a-game message
There’s plenty of games available. You just need to follow the instructions there.
Is there somewhere that’s a guide for the character sheet and that says how to calculate everything on the character sheet like armor class, iniative etc.
well, chapter 1 is a step by step guide to character creation, unless you are looking for something to calculate it all for you, in which case d&d beyond has a built in character creator
the step-by-step process which should answer these questions
Armor class is described here. It typically depends on your Dexterity modifier and your armor.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#ArmorClass
Initiative is a Dexterity check, so it's typically equal to your Dexterity modifier.
What about atk bonus in the attacks and spellcasting part of the sheet how do you calculate those
That's based on your class/level
If you're proficient with a weapon then you add your Proficiency Bonus plus the relevant modifer (typically Str or Dex, depending on the weapon type).
Where does it say
for spellcasting, will say in the class description of all casting-capable classes (and subclasses) with the calculation provided to figure out spellcasting attack bonus as well as spellcasting DC
For weapons
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/equipment#WeaponProficiency
Proficiency with a weapon allows you to add your proficiency bonus to the attack roll for any attack you make with that weapon. If you make an attack roll using a weapon with which you lack proficiency, you do not add your proficiency bonus to the attack roll.
I know the profiency bonus I don’t what to put in the atk bonus box on the sheet
So strength + proficiency for melee dex + profiency for ranged weapons
Assuming you’re proficient with those weapons, yes.
Warlocks have proficiency with simple weapons.
So you wouldn’t add your proficiency to any martial weapons, like a longsword.
If it’s a finesse weapon, like a dagger, you can choose STR or DEX.
Unless I choose pact of the blade right then I add proficiency to any melee weapon as long as I create it
You’d be proficient with the pact weapon itself.
So if you make a longsword, yes, you’d add your proficiency bonus.
But if you pick up a regular longsword, you would not.
But it costs an action to create it then another action to attack with it?
Yes
But you can create it before you enter the cave, and then use it the whole time you’re inside.
You don’t have to recreate it during every combat unless you dismiss it after every one.
If my strength is -1, and I have +2 profiency, does that mean with a greatsword that I’m proficient with my atk bonus is just 1?
Correct....is this still in regards to a Warlock...?
Yea the pact of the blade
You may want to take the hexblade subclass
Lets you use charisma for your pact weapon
Aye. Pact of the Blade may not provide you much if you have a low Strength or Dex score. Either going Hexblade subclass would help with this by allowing you to utilize your Charisma for your attack modifier; or look at perhaps Pact of the Chain or Tome
I dont want to do Tome and for Chain you can use find familiar by picking a invocation
Chain gives you more options with it
If you’re set on blade tho check out hexblade for your subclass
The invocation you are likely looking at or thinking of requires you to have Pact of the Chain to take it
Oh nvm its Book of Ancient Secrets and requires Tome
Correct
Are there official pictures of the spells anywhere? Even if it’s just a few
Check this out, I don't know much about what's in it, but it looks alright!

im new here and wanting to create or join a group and meet amazing people

After you read the rules and/or watch the tutorial videos, feel free to ask questions here.
the tutorial videos are helpful, and the basic rules ch.13 didn't know about that and learned about usisng magic properly
Don't bother with Part 4's chapters.
does readying a spell initiate combat?
How do difficult checks work
wym
I just don't know how to difficulty check
you set a dc
and then you have them roll a d20 + modifier from them
if its the same or higher you succeed
An Ability check happens when a player wants to do something that has a chance of failure. The DM will say which skill is to be used (which can be a tool, if you have the proficiency). The player rolls a d20, and adds modifiers. The DM will decide the difficulty, and the roll must match or exceed it.
Sometimes, the DC will be set by a contested roll - i.e. the number to beat is a roll by another character like an NPC. This is often the case with Stealth vs Perception, and Deception vs Insight, for example.
Requiring a successful DC 15 strength (athletics) check to climb
never explaining again
does readying a spell initiate combat tho
Does 2d6 mean that someone has to throw 2 6 sided dice?
Up to the DM to decide "when combat starts".
Exactly.
yes
wait so if some player declares a combat action when not yet in combat everyone rolls initiative and then the player only gets to do that action when its their turn?
I'm playing g the philander campaign with my friends as first time DM, so it's alot to take in
Yes, that's the case.
Yup! It is! You aren't wrong to be asking questions, and now is the time and the place to ask them 🙂
sweet
Is chill touch or toll the dead more liked generally
im trying to join/create a new campaign and I was recommended to join this server
toll the dead does a ton more damage
So when the dc 15 strength check is what I read.. what does that do foe my adventurers
*for
Also, does my party have to roll for perception, and the enemy roll for dexterity everytime its written in the adventure book, or does the initial rolls count until the encounter changes
If it just says Strength, then players roll a D20, and add their Strength Modifier. If they have a Strenght of 10, their modifier will be 0. If it was 12, then you add +1.
Then, if their roll, plus their modifier is greater than or equal to 15, they succeed.
It will more usually say a skill and an Ability, like Athletics (Strength). If it says that, then a player with proficiency in the Athletics Skill can also add their Proficiency bonus to the roll.
Can you provide the example passage, because this doesn't make sense as it is. Are you talking about a Stealth roll?
For example...
A goblin is hiding, and characters can spot it by succeeding on a Wisdom (Perception) check contested by the goblin’s Dexterity (Stealth) check.
The Goblin's character sheet says that their Stealth rolls are +6, which takes into account their Dexterity modifier, and their Stealth proficiency. So the DM rolls a d20 for the goblin, and adds 6. The players roll d20's. They add their wisdom modifier, and If they have proficiency with perception, they also add their proficiency modifier. And player whose result meets or exceed the goblin's, will see the goblin.
As for when you repeat it, it's up to the DM. I would usually repeat this on any new occasion they encounter this goblin. So if they pass through the room once, they would check for that time...if they leave and pass through again, check again. But that's my choice as DM.
When you guys have a character sheet irl do you write everything in pencil then erase stuff when you level up or what do people do cuz I was gonna print it out
I would print it out but leave stuff you’re likely to change blank so you can write it in with pencil and erase it if needed
That or print a new one
digital forms can make it easier to edit it
Everytime you level up tho or get ability score improvement or something
im not sure what your question is…?
I mean, yes a pencil works
There’s no trick to it…whatever is convenient and most legible for you, do that
I mean were you suggesting I print out a new one everytime I level up
You can do whatever works for you
Do a lot of people just have it on their phone and change it as the game goes on or what do most people do
Levelling up, you are more usually going to be adding things. There's only a few level ups where you will have an opportunity to change your ability scores.
The main problem with frequent eraser use is spell slots, and HP.
Do most people use pencil or phone or something else
I play online
But also in person
For online we all use ddb
For in person some of my players use ddb, and some have pdf character sheets
I think the point is…do what works for you. Don’t worry what other people use?
We laid out the options
Use a pencil and erase
Use a pen, but then you need to replace then sheet to change it
Use digital
Use whatever works for you
how does challenge rating work? and what does it have to do with the xp
It's an indicator of how tough a monster is based on how much damage it can do and how much health and AC it has
Challenge rating is a difficulty rating describing each creature. A CR is also pegged to the amount of xp given out. A CR 4 monster should be a medium difficulty encounter for 4 level 4 players. DMs have equations to follow which will rate encounter difficulty based on the CR and number of enemies.
Each CR has an associated xp value that is used for two things:
- A reward if you're using XP leveling
- Determining how many monsters to include in an encounter
how did you calculate that
There are tables in the DMG for this.
In reality, I save myself the maths and use a calculator, but that's more a topic for #dm-discussion
can I get a link to dmg
The dungeon masters guide - the official source book https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dmg
This is also chapter 13 of the basic rules
"Weird Insight. The nothic targets one creature it can see within 30 feet of it. The target must contest its Charisma (Deception) check against the nothic’s Wisdom (Insight) check. If the nothic wins, it magically learns one fact or secret about the target. The target automatically wins if it is immune to being charmed." What kind of a secret could it be?
thats up to the DM and the player to figure out
Could before running the nothic fight, ask the players to send the DM a fact or secret about their PCs, and ask for it to be dramatic, or dark, or so on. Something the DM can use for the scene. it might never come up, but the DM knowing these thigns is good anyway
yeah if possible, its better to sort this out before the fight and not during
Is the max ability score you can have for stuff like charisma and dexterity 20?
without magic items, yes
Barbarian can get to 24 in CON and STR at level 20. All other classes and all other stats need magic items to surpass the 20 limit
DO you need a check to evaluate the cost of an item? If yes, what?
that would be up to your DM. there are no set rules for deteriming an item's price and the pricing itself for magic items is generally also left up to the DM, with some vague guidelines
Well I personally would use intelligence (Arcana) but that is up to the DM too
wb memory
intelligence is generally associated with memory
There aren’t any explicit “memory” checks, tho if you’re a spellcaster having your main stat higher generally means you have access to more spells.
But yeah if someone is trying to remember a thing and we want to roll for it I’d use intelligence as well.
Arcana, Religion, History etc are all explicitly about recalling knowledge
Intelligence measures mental acuity, accuracy of recall, and the ability to reason.
Oh I just mean in the most general terms there’s no “memory” skill. There’s skills that lean on memory like the ones you’re describing.
Does disuise self let you change your face
Yes. Your face is a part of yourself.
Do The Book of Ancient Secrets spells cost a spell slot or not? All the other eldritch invocations say if they cost a slot or they dont except that one
you can cast the chosen spells as rituals. You can't cast the spells except as rituals
They don't cost a spell slot, because you can only cast them as rituals, and ritual casting doesn't consume a spell slot.
hello im a newcomer and im wondering if anybody would be willing to make me a wizard level 5 build. I'm gonna play dnd with some friends but i have no clue on how to make myself a character
Heyo im new spent a hour and 45 min making a character about to pass out for the night. Never played d&d before in my life but im extremely interested in playing so yeah I look forward to being apart of the community and learning all I can.
If you have the dndbeyond app you can get it to make you a random lvl 5 wizard
I could help out if ya want! Sometimes it’s good to have someone explain everything as you go along. Just dm me if you’re interested :))
Hello all! Very new player and i'm just here cause- why not. Nice to meet y'all!
Also, trying to make a druid and i'm slightly confused about the differences between cantrips, prepared and known spells?
"Characters gain advantage on ability checks made to find the slightly ajar secret door" How would I explain to a character he has advantage when he is looking for a door
cantrips are "level 0" spells that you can cast at will. you know a few but your choice is mostly locked in
Druids know all leveled spells that they have spellslots for (ignoring multiclassing for a moment), but can only prepare a few of those every long rest.
you dont prepare cantrips
Oh, so known spells is like a list of spells i can pick from, prepared spells I can use with spell slots, and cantrips are just, whenever i want
basically, yes
I see, thank you! Does a character gain more spell slots as they level up?
yes, if you look at the druid table, you see what spell slots you have at any given level
Thank you for the help!(and the link)
"Characters gain advantage on ability checks made to find the slightly ajar secret door" How would I explain to a character he has advantage when he is looking for a door
if a Player says : i wanna look for a (secret) door, you tell them: make a perception check (some DMs might use investigation instead) with advantage
(Sorry last question), do different numbers mean different spell levels, which basically mean different power levels? Like i.e. I upcast fireball or smthn(only spell i know lol) , and when there's multiple numbers mean theres multiple spell slots?
the numbers mean how many spell slots you have of that slot level. if you cast a 3rd level spell for example, you need a 3rd level slot, or higher
oh, then for the 3rd level, for example, do i have 6 spell slots, 4 1st level and 2 2nd level, or 4 first level spell slots IF i only cast 1st level, and 2 2nd level spell slots only IF i cast 2nd level spells
(sorry this is incoherent-)
if your character is 5th level, they have 4 L1 spell slots, 3 L2 Spell slots and 2 L3 spell slots.
for example
at 3rd level, you have 4 first level and 2 L2 slots, so your first guess
oh, but I can cast 6 1st level spells and only 2 2nd level ones
but if you look for all the doors without advantage and randomly in that room you look for the door with advantage
you can cast normally 4 first level spells, though you can also upcast 1st level spells with second level slots.
ohhh and upcasting makes it better right(based on the spell)?
some spells change on upcast some dont. its in each spell's description
Ah, I see, thank you for all the help!
np
uhm is there someone who knows alot about dnd DMing and can you message me
You can also ask your questions here!

I hit the wrong punctuation, meant to be enthusiastic rather than sarcastic 😅
so how does one get started into dnd?

Is watching d&d a good way to learn? Specifically, DImension20 campaigns
Read the basic rules (at least the parts for players), and the videos in the link above will help
Not really. It's great once you know the basics and can follow along, but I wouldn't start there.
I got a character. that a friend helped me out with. not sure if its good. where could i get it looked at?
i mean i can understand whats happenin
You can share it here if you like
does that count? i'm not really confused
In that case maybe look up the wizards official playthrough of lost mine of Phandelver.
You should be fine if you know how rolls work
Alr sick, thanks man!
don't know how to post the pdf file
Do you have it on DND beyond, or just a pdf? If the latter you would have to upload it somewhere and then share a link here
This server doesn't allow embeds
just pdf.
Right so you'll have to upload it to another website and then share a link here
I think Scribd works like imgur for pdfs? You just have to decline to register? I'm not sure I don't use it myself
Scribd is a website. You could also try Google Docs or One Drive.
Like I said, you can find a website to upload it. I understand that Scribd is one such website, but don't use it myself. Alternatively, take screenshots and put them on imgur.
How u do it on google docs?
actually i got an idea for it.
Say a party of players are in a town/settlement and wish to regain all their hit dice, so they take a long rest which gives them half their hit dice back to use. If they wanted to regain all their hit dice, couldn't they just say something like "we linger round town all day until we can long rest again", then just like that they'd regain all their hit dice.
My question is doesn't this scenario just negate the half hit dice rule? Is this fine and do players usually do this? Thanks in advance if anyone is willing to answer.
or am I misunderstanding the long rest rule?
Sorry, Google Drive.
That's fine but also it's more meant for long adventures with possibly a time constraint
The party may be pressed for time, and choosing to stay an extra day could cost them in other ways.
(e.g. the bad guys get a head start)
It's up to the DM to adjudicate. Sure, taking two days off to recover might be possible. It would cost another days tavern fee or ration use. But more importantly the story will probably mean that they need to proceed or there will be consequences.
It all depends on the situation.
But it’s generally up to players to decide when they want to rest.
Staying or not is a choice, and choices shape the story either way.
Right yea, thanks for answering. That makes sense, so it's more up to the campaign/story the DM has used to put time pressure on the party. That's fun
Looks good!
Yup can't see any problems

Hi 👋
hallo
Ahoy
hola
Hello everyone, I just played for the first time yesterday at a local venue and had a great time!
Hey, is there anyone running a campaign I can join?
Plenty! You can head over to #find-a-game to get started.
I played as a rogue and there were 5 of us in total. One guy was more experienced and played as a new Bard character and he was able to communicate with a giant spider and then used vicious mockery to insult him and then played the lute right after. lol.
Does anyone knows ways to familiarize myself with D&D? I currently can't play any irl but I want to at understand at least when I do.

oh uh- i read those.... and... made some characters
the demo was fun!
Beyond that, then, you could try watching some liveplays.
On Youtube or Twitch.
There’s this one next weekend to celebrate the new book this month.
Hey everyone, looking for some advice.
I'm gonna be teaching a friend and her kids how to play DND and I want to make them each a welcome kit.
I've ordered them dice sets in their favorite colors, as well as a notebook, a cute bag to carry them, a dice tray, and a laminated cheat sheet that shows them what they can do each turn/reminders for core rules
Does anyone have suggestions for what I could add to this?
What age range are the kids?
14 and 10
Gotcha. If they’d been any younger, I would have suggested something to track things like hit points and spell slots.
But at that age, they probably don’t need it.
I take it they haven’t made their characters yet, correct?
They've never played before, they're just a nerdy family and they're excited about the idea. I want to make sure their first time playing is a positive and memorable one
I'd be teaching them core rules, races, everything
These Young Adventurer’s Guides are pretty neat.
https://www.amazon.com/Adventurers-Collection-Dungeons-Dragons-4-Book/dp/1984859544
They give kind of a simplified overview of the game.
But then they’d have something they can look through on their own to see if it sparks any ideas or questions.
That's a great idea! Thanks
Wizards & Spells, for example, gives a simple two-page overview of each spellcasting class, then two pages describing a notable member of that class.
There’s a little flowchart to help pick a spellcasting class, too.
And then a few example descriptions of spells for each level.
There was the D&D movie that came out this year, too.
Thanks, those dicelings are adorable too.
I think for now, I'll stick to a cheatsheet rather than splurging on the book set as getting the above things is already adding up quite a bit, especially with shipping to where I live not being free.

For just a regular old game of DND, what sourcebooks do I need for all character customization options? Far as I can tell I need Player's Handbook, DM's Guide, Xanathar's Guide, Tasha's Cauldron, Swordcoast Adventure and Fizban's Treasury?
Few options in Ravnica and Wildemount books as well, if you really want everything.
For absolutely everything you'll have to dip into some of the more obscure ones that only provide one or two new options. Really, Player's HandBook, Tasha's and Xanathar's are the meat of the subclasses available.
A few of the adventure modules also have Backgrounds listed in them, like Tomb of Annihiilation and Saltmarsh
Nah Artificer is reprinted in Tasha's
Don't worry about collecting them all though. You'll have a great time just with the PLayer's Handbook.
The four biggest bang-for-buck choices are:
- Player’s Handbook
- Xanathar’s Guide to Everything
- Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything
- Monsters of the Multiverse
Only need Eberron these days if you want the world building stuff
And also includes the Armorer subclass, which isn’t in ERFTLW.
Good point, forgot it's there as well.
If you’re using D&D Beyond, you can also buy character options individually instead of getting the whole book.
Whatever you spend gets credited toward the cost of the book itself, too.
Oh that'll be useful. I just found out my DM wants to use DND Beyond and he only owns PHB so I can just buy the individual stuff I need.
Someone in your campaign needs to have the Master Tier subscription on D&D Beyond (typically it's the DM since players can rotate out) so the digital books can be shared among the people in the campaign.
I have a free trial so I'm going to use that and buy the individual pieces and hopefully that should work?
Yeah you can buy pieces just for yourself to use
Perfect. Spent a bunch of time making my Death Cleric and I was worried I'd need to start from scratch with a Tempest
Just be aware that if the DM says Players Handbook only, you probably shouldn't wander in with a class/race that isn't in the PHB.
I've already talked to him about it.
The only concern was the mechanics of it on DND Beyond
DnDBeyond does a decent job - there's a few areas with some of the newer book releases where they don't have a feature working as desired (or at all in some rare cases) but most stuff works fine.
I find DND Beyond is actually the easiest way to introduce new players to mechanics, as the website does a lot of the math for the player and ensures they don't "mess up" their character sheet
It's not perfect, but imo it's the best character building on the internet, leaps better than Roll20s Charactermancer
Should i make a character before i try to join a game? is there different characters for different like types of game I am very new
Sure. You can. And yes, different characters can be kinda tailored to different settings. Or can be quite out of place in certain settings, if you expect to keep the reactions of the locals realistic.
It's good practice to build a character, because you will learn some things along the way. Heck, build three! But be prepared that when you join a game, they might be looking for a specific class role, or might have some restrictions, so you might still build a new character at that point too.
alright i think ill just wait until the game so i know if there is restrictions
Try building a basic character just so you know what works, and get familiar with the classes.
So I have a question what's yall opinion on character backstories should I be making a full on short story on my character background or should I be doing bulletin points with a few supporting sentences to help show how the event molded the character into who they are now
Remember that the DM has to read other players' backstories as well, not just yours. Your backstory should be a foundation, not your entire life story. Keep it brief otherwise your DM's eyes may glaze over.
Assuming you're starting at level 1, your character is just starting their adventuring career so avoid things like "I slew a dragon and a horde of ogres" when you have 0 xp as whatever class you are...
I keep the backstory plot points vague, gives room to develop the details as you play the character
More details please
What's the issue?
Like how it works
Did you read the Basic Rules yet?
Does foresight give you advantage on attacks and enemies disadvantage on attacks for 8 hours?
That's what the spell description says:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/foresight
You touch a willing creature and bestow a limited ability to see into the immediate future. For the duration,** the target can't be surprised and has advantage on attack rolls, ability checks, and saving throws. Additionally, other creatures have disadvantage on attack rolls against the target for the duration.**
I’m just confused on the 8 hours part
8 hours is the duration of the spell unless the spell ends earlier if you cast the spell again.
It is a 9th level spell afterall.
That’s explained here in the Basic Rules introduction.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/introduction#GameDice
Can someone help me install that d&d app?
?
wdym
I think it was DND beyond?
You go to your app store for your mobile device and install it.
^
But how do I sign in ???
You create an account.
This is just like every app.
Do you still lose a spell slot if you miss a spell?
You use the spell slot to cast the spell, regardless if it works or hits
It's like a bullet from a gun. That bullet isn't going to remain in the chamber if it misses after being fired.
With DND Beyond, is there a known issue with the character sheet not counting proficiencies from background?
What background?
Which skills are being affected?
Custom Background. It should be giving me Perception and Deception.
It’s probably a caching issue.
It seems to happen sometimes with custom backgrounds specifically.
If you correctly selected everything in the builder, though, it will show up eventually.

It says choose a total of two tool proficiencies or languages
Yeah, you can do one and one.
As long as the total number of proficiencies you choose from those categories doesn’t exceed two.
Any games tonight

What are the things you can have advantage and disadvantage on?
All rolls pretty much
yeah, d20 rolls, specifically attack rolls, saving throws, skill checks, and probably more that I'm not thinking of
Initiative although that counts as an ability check
right yeah I thought about that and considered it as such
Your DM decides when you have advantage, if the DM thinks you have a high chance of succeeding on a roll then you'll get advantage (rolling 2 d20 and taking the higher number) and if they think that you'll fail you're roll disadvantage (rolling 2d20 and taking the lowest number). It should also be stated you still add your ability modifier to whatever you're rolling with advtange/disadvantage.
all true, and you'll often gain advantage or be imposed disadvantage by mechanics via class features, racial traits, spell effects, etc.
Oh right, that too.
It’s not necessarily if they think you’ll succeed or fail, but whether the present situation makes it easier or harder to succeed.
Yeah, I worded it weird I meant if they think it's easier to succeed/fail.
So like if you’re in mud, the dm might say you have disadvantage on attack? Or is that already an official thing
Well that would depend on how far away the person is from you you're attacking, if they're in range (5 feet normally) then you'd probably have advantage because the target can't move to dodge the attack. Meanwhile if they're out of range, unless you're making a ranged attack I believe you'd have disadvantage due to the struggle to move through mud towards your oppoent. This all depends on what your DM says though and if you have any features that would change this (I don't know of any).
Hey sorry as a DM would i reveal if a human npc is a dragon in a human guise to the players or would I keep that private until it is revealed in the campaign?
I believe what you'd be asking is a no, because if that's a big plot point then you're players shouldn't know if you want it to have a big shock factor.
Awesome thank you!
I created a character on dnd beyond and I have an account with roll20 is there anything else I need to do to become and online player?
Hello anyone have a group I can join?
#find-a-game can point you toward the available groups.
For making a custom background do you have to actually choose a background? It’s not custom all the way? It says “You can either use
the equipment package from your background or spend coin on gear as described in chapter 5.” Does that mean I can only choose equipment that one of the backgrounds has?
That or use the money from your class and buy equipment.
When you create your character, you receive equipment based on a combination of your class and background. Alternatively, you can start with a number of gold pieces based on your class and spend them on items from the lists in this section.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/equipment#StartingEquipment
But the customize background thing says “equipment from your background” but if you’re customizing the background from nothing what equipment is it talking about
To customize a background, you can replace one feature with any other one, choose any two skills, and choose a total of two tool proficiencies or languages from the sample backgrounds. You can either use the equipment package from your background or spend coin on gear as described in the Equipment section.
A custom background is kind of pick-and-choose from existing backgrounds, so if you wanted to, you'd take the equipment package from one already published.
And I also get the equipment from my class?
If you don't take the starting gold, yes.
Is stuff that requires the enemy to make a constitution save generally very risky
Generally anything forcing a saving throw can be very risky depending on who is being affected, by what, and the current situation
But constitution especially right
Again, it depends.
There’s a risk in everything you do. make an attack? You might roll low. Force a save? They might roll high. Very little is assured
Its always a balance
As you progress you learn to minimize risk on your end and maximize your chances against enemies
What may be of high risk to one person is of little concern to another. Dex saves on AOE attacks can be unpleasant for most. For a Rogue or Monk? They practically laugh at them. That Wisdom save to avoid being charmed? Those with advantage against being charmed may not be as worried while those with immunity to being charmed laugh at it. Thus, it depends on a number of factors beyond just the type of save as even within those saves some things can be far worse than others
For polymorph whats the difference between dropping to 0 hit points and dying?
Some effects ignore HP and cause desth
When you drop to 0 hp when polymorphed you return back to your original form
Nothing you need to worry about until higher levels
Any suggestions of where to start with a 2 player game?
I have no clue how to start can I get some help?
One DM and one player or one DM and two players?

I don’t get the range for vampiric touch it says self but you’re attacking someone
Because you're casting the spell on yourself, not your melee ranged target. You're not obligated to attack (aka touch) another creature within the minute duration of the spell. Whereas with Shocking Grasp (which has a range of "Touch") the spell is part of the instantaneous melee spell attack.
So you cast it on yourself then for one minute whenever you punch them or grab them or something it does the spell?
Yes, if you do a melee spell attack
If I use a dagger will it stack the spells damage with the daggers damage
No, because you're doing a melee weapon attack with the dagger.
The Vampiric Touch will only trigger if you do a melee spell attack.
Whats the difference
dagger = melee weapon attack
vampiric touch = melee spell attack
https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/vampiric-touch
Make a melee spell attack against a creature within your reach.
They're different ways of attacking
Vampiric Touch gives you a spell attack you can use instead of other types of attack
Whats happening visually tho with a melee spell attack
You can envision it however you want
Spell Attack rolls
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/spellcasting#AttackRolls
Weapon Attack rolls
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#MakinganAttack
Pick your anime inspiration and go buck wild
Narrative flavour is free.
And the diff between spell and weapon attacks will be what ability you use. Weapon attacks (usually) str or dex, depending on the weapon. Spell attacks use your spell casting ability which comes down to your class
What are examples though? Punching? Flicking? Since you aren’t attacking with a melee weapon you just have to touch them with your hand in some way?
You can describe the touch however you want. A kiss, a punch, a pinch, a wave
Melee spell attacks involves a spell.
Melee weapon attack involves a weapon.
So the only thing is I have to touch them just not with a melee weapon
Or it can be a melee weapon but it wont do that melee weapons damage itll do the spell
That'll be up to your DM. Game mechanically you just roll your Melee Spell Attack without the benefits of a weapon in your hand (such as a magic weapon).
And how close do I have to be? Whatever my speed is?
The touch can be described in any manner you want, i imagine a DM wouldnt have a problem with describing the touch as done with anything providing all requirements of the spell are otherwise met
Melee range (typically 5')
Touch means within your reach, so 5ft , unless you have some other special feature

hi all new around here ❤️
so i want to be a full support pure heals type healer, is that cleric? and if so what spec?
Life cleric fits the bill pretty nicely
I'm sure druid paladin or bard get some sort of spec for it too. Just not sure what's it would be called
Warlocks have celestial pact as well
But life cleric is pretty much what you are looking for
life cleric sweet tyty
Hello
Can you switch your mystic arcanum spells after leveling up?
Rules as written, no you can not.
But DM's may change things.
Oh wait - there is an exception if you're using Tasha's optional rules in which case at level 12 you can replace them on a level up.
But yeah, depends on what rules are being used at your table.
As a Hafling i get a passive that lets me reroll when i Roll a 1. Can i do this everytime i Roll a 1? Or do i need to wait
Hey I am new to dnd how do I do a Campaign
#find-a-game and then in there you Press on #looking-for-players
They Post campaigns you can Join there
Thank you
You mean Halfling Luck?
Yes
Or Lucky sorry.
I mean that one yea
I believe you can do with whenever (on a ability check, saving throw, or attack roll) but if you roll another 1 then you have to use that roll.
Like you have to use the new roll.
Yea
Also when i attack
I get a Bonus action
Can i attack twice per Turn?
By using it
No, attacking uses an action. But some classes (mainly fighter and monk) do have abilities where you can do multiple attacks with one action.
Cool thanks
Can i use a Boomerang to Like throw at stuff and IT Like Brings it Back to ke
Like Legend of Zelda boomerang
I don't think there's an offical thing for that, but with D&D anything is possible if you homebrew.
Oh, no I'm wrong there is a boomerang.
Can i Rub glue onto it
It only does 1d4 damage though.
You would need to be an artificer to get returning weapon
Or does IT Always Bring me items when i throw IT at them
Not according to D&D Beyong I don't think.
You can do whatever you want if you have the stuff, wdrrhing else depends on the dm
But Boomerang comes Back
boomerang is not a fully official weapon, it also only comes back if you miss
So i cant Grab items with IT?
no
Aw
if you want a boomerang that grabs items for you, ask your DM if they are willing to make a magic item like that, but if you go by official content than thats not possible
Can i Put glue on my Boomerang and attach a Rope to it
So i throw it at the Item and pull it Back
that is a question for your DM, I wouldnt count on this working as you intend with every DM, but if they thinks its funny, they might allow it
Holds water I believe.
Can i drown someone by Putting it over their head
It holds your drinking water.
So its Like a canteen
Probably not enough to drown anyone, but that’s another one you’d have to ask your DM.
Is snapping someones Neck a valid attack
That'd be a HUGE strength check man.
There aren’t explicit rules for it.
If I were DMing it I'd make it a strength check contested with a con save.
But each DM is different.
I've never played a Monk so that's not really my area of expertise, but yes they're definetly not spellcasters. Fury of Blows is literally just an ability that lets you punch a bunch.
If i want to kick someone in the knee in Order to Break it
Is that a dex or strength Roll for me
I'd do strength, but this all really depends on the DM there's no universal index for these kinda things.
Sorry I don't know what you mean by fist weapons...
D&D does not have such a default weapon type
Yeah, that'd be another homebrew thing.
You could reflavour clubs and daggers as fist weapons
Yep - take the mechanics of existing weapons/items but reflavor it to fit your concept.
It’s even in the monk weapon txt
Ask your DM
But don't forget the game is about collaborative fun with the rest of the group and robbing stores may have negative impacts for the story your group is playing.
Do i use my Bonus action to jump
anything the DM and the group allow
No - jumping is movement and uses your movement action
Cool
It'd just be like 5 ft. though.
I'm.so sorry to ask I bet I'm being super dumb but I just joined and I dunno how to place an ad for looking for dm and I'm a lil confused
Check out #find-a-game for instructions.
Thank you sm I just a submitted a request thanks for your help!
Is there anywhere on this sub where I can post a Oneshot I’m working on for feedback?
#dm-discussion , or if its more of a lore building question, #dm-world-building
Thanks
hi im a dm abt to start a new game for just one person. i have a campaign i can use but its says its for 3-4 players. does that really matter or do i need to modify the campaign?
You mean just you and 1 player?
yea
That's REAL hard to do, you can find more players in this server, look in #find-a-game if you're interested.
i also had the idea of creating an npc that i can play that can help the player
This comes more under #dm-discussion. General advice will be
- Give them a sidekick or two: NPCs that support the main PC.
- Reduce the number of enemies, focus more on the main enemy and fewer goblins
- Perhaps be more generous with magic items a little earlier.
Yeah, this is called a Sidekick. The risk is, you don't want it to be what's called a DMPC, where you are also playing on both sides of the game.
hello there
Welcome
So as a new player, do I need to bring anything to by first game? Like do I need to buy a dice set or anything
And if I do could I get them at like Walmart or Target or something like that
Generally you’ll want a character sheet (free if you’ve got a printer) some extra paper, pencil and/or pen, and a set of polyhedral dice. Shouldn’t cost you more than $10 for all that, the dice being the most expensive.
My local store even sells mini dice that are like 6-7 bucks or something (CAD)
If you can't afford dice there are always dice roller apps (even Google has one).
I'd recommend asking your DM if there's anything else you need, too.
(Also: snacks to share!)
Being the snack-person is a sure fire way to get invited back.
Hi everyone!
Ahoy!
How's everyone doing?
Looking forward to a big session on Tuesday, but putting off my prep. Any newcomer questions you need answering?
Yes how do you find games on here? I only see find a game and that's it.
Did you check #find-a-game ?
I just figured out I have to select the highlighted category! LOL, I found it, thanks.
can I attach my focus (orb) to a quarterstaff so I'm able to attack and cast spells without having to hold my focus in hand ?
You might as well use a staff as an arcane focus. You can attack with it as if it was a quarterstaff.
Unless a staff's description says otherwise, a staff can be used as a quarterstaff.
oh cool thanks
Otherwise you need to hold an arcane focus in a free hand.
Additionally, if you’re playing at a game store or adventurer’s league table, there will probably be an extra set of dice for you to borrow
Heck they might give you a set for free. First hit is free, afterall
They want new players bc thats more customers
Hello everyone im a returning player from decades ago rusty for sure.If anyone needs a player let me know and I would be honoured to join!
Thank you
Are you new to 5E? Have you read the (free) Basic Rules yet?
if you head to #find-a-game it gives you the instructions on how to use our looking for channels
Hello I’m new to everything never played before but I have read the basics rules
Hey
Yeah
i know a little D&D from my dad and stepmom, and i'm lokking for a new group
I first heard about it from my dad and then I joined a D&D club at my school and we played a few short campaigns, but that was a while ago
are back at D&D again?
The club?
yeah and out of the club
they started the club in my last year, so no, I haven’t gone to the club again
Question, would this work or is this only for like a specific version of the game https://www.target.com/p/dungeons-38-dragons-dragons-of-stormwreck-isle-starter-set-game/-/A-85017140#lnk=sametab
Embed fail
but like do you still play
this is the newest starter set for D&D 5th edition, which is the current edition of the game @limber quiver
yup that's for 5e! It's a great set for a group of friends looking to start their d&d adventure
I haven’t played since then, but I really wanted to and then I found out dungeons and dragons beyond
Nice
it has everything you need to jump right in. I would always recommend that whoever will be dming to read the rules and adventure before running but other than that you would be good to go
well wanna satrt a campaing
@cursive estuary yeah
Okay folks - please take your campaign get-together into direct messages - it's off-topic here.
ok undying
Ok
Could I use it just for like the rulebook, the dice, and the character sheet if it comes with one? I was thinking of just joining any campaign from the dnd club at my uni once we go back in a few weeks tbh
Yeah - for future reference please use the #looking-for channels (see #find-a-game on how to use them) when organizing a game/group. And happy adventuring!
I would just use the free access on d&d beyond. The starter set comes with pre generated characters and a stripped down rulebook with only what's needed for that box
d&d beyond has the free basic rules, a character creator (with the ability to make a pdf) and a dice roller all in one package
Please read #find-a-game - and then check #looking-for-players as that's Dms looking for players for their games.
?looking
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.

yeah. Getting into d&d has 0 cost commitment. If you want more than that free content is when you have to start spending money
if you do enjoy it, I would look into getting the players handbook as your first big purchase for the game as it is the core rulebook for players (pretty much all the same rules as what's in the basic rules but more player customization options)
might be a dumb question but do i make my character before or after joining a table..? ive never played and im pretty confused

Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
You would typically make a character when you join a group because the DM may not allow certain playable races/classes and may want a certain way of generating ability scores (rolling dice, Standard Array, or Point Buy).
Hello
its fine to make practise characters to learn the process, but dont expect to play them unchanged at any table
oki ty and i wanna find a campaign but im scared im gonna be with pros and hold them back do you have any recs
you cant really hold someone back in dnd by being new
just be honest about your skill level and expectations
Most groups are fine with new-to-the-game players as long as the player shows a willingness to read and learn the rules and works well with the rest of the table.
oh ok good to know
because dnd is a cooperative game, between everyone at the table, including the DM
just be willing to learn, work with your fellow players to create fun together and you are golden
Howdy, I just joined the discord. I have a group of 4 counting myself, 2 people in the group have played older gens of the game awhile ago and two of us are brand new noobs, is there some kind of DM adoption type of thing for us to find a DM?
Check out #looking-for-players as that's DM's looking for players for their games
And then I'd also recommend reading #find-a-game
Ohhh awesome, Ty
um so still very fresh to dnd Ive made a couple charaters but im trying to wrap my brain around spellcasting users and its breaking every brain cell
what part are you having issues with
my spell modifer, spell attack, I kinda know how to get my spell DC, but also knowing when attacking the creatur if they have to go against my DC or when I can just straight attack them
the spell will say if the enemy needs to roll against your DC or not
for example, burning hands requires them to make a dexterity save against your DC where as guiding bolt specifies to make a spell attack role
okay and then same for spell modifier it will say when to apply that?
When it says to make a spell attack roll, that is the modifier you add to the roll
yup, spell attacks use your spell modifier
so this recent one shot I did I thought Id challange myself so I multiclasses a rouge and warlock. I use Dnd beyond right now because its very simple for me to learn as I go with it. But for his spells they had a +4spell modifier +10 spell attack, and 18 spell DC. So lets say im going to use eldric blast I would roll to attack my target and I would roll adding my +10 since im attacking. If it landed the hit I would then add on +4 to the damage of waht eldric blasts does?
I barley used this charaters spells becasue I barely knew what i was doing
Well eldritch blast is pretty complicated due to invocations
I have no idea how to play dnd, don’t know how I would play with people or anything 😂
I just got a starter set from target yesterday
Been reading the rulebook
@vapid acorn halu frend
we do have #find-a-game for instructions on how to use the looking for channels here
@silver forge Thank you!!!
The starter set is a great way to get started. Are you gonna be the dm?
I wasn't intending on it but perhaps
I was gonna be a player along with a couple coworkers and our supervisor is gonna be the DM
How do I find people and can you play online?
Seems like this could be a good place to find ppl and from what I've seen you can do it over voice or video chat
How long is a session?
can be anywhere from a couple hours to a good portion of the day. It all depends on the table
personally my sweet spot is between 2-4 hours
any longer and my brain is mush lol
is everyone gonna be using the starter set?
That's the plan, the intended DM said he's gonna get one for himself too
awesome. Then I went bore you with more details other than don't read the adventure since you are planning on being a player lol
Lol, I thought about it just to know more about how to play but then I thought I don't wanna spoil it
what you could do is try the guided adventure as it leads into Dragons of Stormwreck Isle (the adventure in the starter set)
it should be the first link in this message

What are some good campaign books to start with? I have setting books, but really no campaign books yet I guess.
what kkinda campaign do you want to run?
I'll try it out
Any campaigns that are good for level 1-5 groups to get started, and maybe 5-10 groups.
I would even take a list of ALL campaign books, haha. I buy what I think is a campaign book, and it’s just settings.
waterdeep dragon heist is a fun 1-5, Lost Mine of Phandelver is free on D&D Beyond also 1-5, Wild Beyond the witchlight is 1-8 , all more geared to beginner players
you can look at d&d beyond, they are broken down between source books and adventures
Just created my first character 🙂
What'd you go with? I went with dragonborn
well here are some things to help you get started
Yo so how do i start playing with people??
Nice, no problem
yup. #find-a-game has the instructions for finding an online game through our channels. If you are looking for in person I would ask friends, check local game stores, school clubs and libraries
Yeah that seems like a LOT of work, imma wait till someone else makes a lfg post
Lfg?
have you actually read the instructions in there.
Looking for game
Oh
because it tells you what the channels are for and how to post in them. You can search through #looking-for-players
i skimmed it
There is a lot of words there yes, but they are important and if you read them, you'll know how to post and use those #looking-for channels.
D&D and “a lot of words” often go hand in hand.
Funny how a collaborative story telling RPG game does that...
Check the #looking-for-players - that's DMs looking for players for their games right now.
I have a group, just waiting for the DM to read up more
Ah okay!
Yer, a group of 4 all new to it
heyy new here
Welcome!
Good luck!
Ello villager, whats your favourite ale?
Tanks mane
OOC for the new people, what made you decided to try d&d?
i seen a few videos of critical roles 3rd campaign and thought it would be fun to try
Friends from college, always heard about it growing up, then one night one showed up with a book bag filled with 3.5 books....that was 2009, been playing ever since
how is vtt used exactly
ive seen people in #looking-for-players saying they ise vtt and i mare an account but do i need to pay? or would there be a code sent to me
depends on the platform being used. Many are free for the players, some require you to purchase regardless.
Im brand new looking to play some online dnd
hi pookie we can play together
i dont even know where to start lol

i think thats it yea
some people use it, others don't. It's all table dependent
alrighty
imdown
what are you playing on
Is an attack roll the damage roll or to see if you hit the target?
To hit
Damage roll determines the damage after you successfully hit
thus, the order of operation is Attack Roll -> Damage Roll
To Hit -> How Hard you Hit
Str mod = 5, proficiency = 6. D20+11 to hit. DMG = whatever die associated to weapon plus Str mod if melee or dex if its range weapon
Hey everyone!
also melee weapons with the finesse trait can use dex if you want
I need a group to play with
you can look in our #find-a-game channels
im suuuuoer new lol

Why do people not like blade ward
Situational
anyone wanna play?
Isn’t a situation where you would be going against that damage type very common?
Some enemies do not do physical damage
You may have other uses for your bonus action
And casting a bonus action spell means you can only cast a cantrip with your action
i will
Blade ward is a cantrip and not a bonus action though
Newcomer here!
Finally gained enough determination to look around to try to figure out how to start playing..
but why waste your action getting resistance for a round (you might not even get attacked during that round), when you could’ve just attacked

For rounds when you are getting attacked
there’s still a chance the attack doesn’t even hit, and if you’re a caster, you’ll most likely have the shield spell so even if it does hit, it still might miss. you’re better off using your action to try and kill the thing before it attacks you
Maybe you’re really low on health
i have a question regarding artificer on the DNDbeyond website is it a paid class? me and my friend cant look at anything for it but for other classes we can
yeah it is
then i mean, yeah i guess you could use it. but are you seeing how it’s a very situational spell?
You need to either buy one of the books it’s included in or the class individually.
Or someone with the content purchased can share it with you.
Being low on health?
