There is a reason why actions are limited
One single character with too many actions would break the game pretty easily
There's also features like Extra Attack, which don't give you more actions, but do mean that every time you take the Attack Action, you'll make more attacks. A player without Extra Attack gets one attack per Attack Action. A player with Extra Attack will get at least one additional attack per Attack Action, or more if they are a high level fighter.
Also a lot of players take a long time deciding what to do during their turn with just one action...
If the reason you're looking for more actions is because you want to attack a lot in a single turn, check out the Fighter or Monk classes! They're the monarchs of Attack A Lot.
Indeed
I want to throw alot of bombs
Bombs (gunpowder) may not be a thing in a campaign.
It's a pvp
It depends on the world were your game is settled
PvP may not be a thing in a campaign. D&D wasn't designed around PvP.
As stated above, gunpowder is not always a thing in D&D
I don't know if you'd like do to pvp
D&D 5e is not made for that
It is not balanced for it
Ok
D&D 5e is a cooperative game
I'm not really a new comer
We don't know that...
I just looking for help to kill something
I have a question
If that something is another player's character, i strongly advise agains't it
No
Go on
So I want to make a bardand I want to make aloot is my weapon can I make it so it’s like a club like it does the same amount of damage and like everything like that even though it’s a loot
You mean a lute?
The instrument idk how to spell it
If you wanted to flavor your club as a lute or vice versa, id allow it.
Well, i don't see why not
Ask your DM.
Ok thanks
It would be a improvised attack so it would do 1d4 bludgeoning damage
If your dm is reasonable, you could do it like this
That is not the idea
He just wants to use a clube that can play music like a lute, nothing more
There is no reason to not allow it
Ok thanks
Ok
excuuuuse me?! Did you just accuse me of being reasonable?!?!
Club is 1d4 anyway
Oh yeah
No
Sooo
So how many bombs could you throw in one turn? Come with me over to #optimization .
10000000000000000001
does anyone want to play DnD with two new people who were supposed to play tonight, but DM bailed 😦
Wait what
I can play but I don’t know how to be a dm
I mean
ok, me, my friend and Nasal Spray wanna play
I could try to dm if you guys are cool with playing on my homebrew world xD
Yea
We could use mine, if you'd like
yeahh
I will send friend request for both of you so i can send the server invite
Explosives isn't a standard thing in D&D. Ask your DM if they allow gunpowder in their campaign.
If you're looking for a character to flavor as using explosives, check out Artificer! Specifically the Artillerist or Alchemist subclasses.
They don't give you explosives, but you can easily reflavor some of their spells as explosives if you use some imagination.
When it comes to making explosive items, that is something done with Artisan Tools, which any character could theoretically use, with the right proficiency. Just take note: what you can make is almost entirely DM dependent.
I'm gonna DM for my little brothers sometime tomorrow or Thursday, got any tips for a first time DM?
My top priority as a DM always is: the game is about having fun. If the players look like they're not having fun, it's time to move on to the next scene
But it depends if gunpowder is a thing in the game you're in
There’s some good advice here. 👇
?dmtips
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.

Is it silly to have a Druid warlock
is it frowned upon to make AI art for my character portrait
You just can't post AI generated stuff here.
yeah that's why I'm asking
What you do at your table is up to you and your DM.
thank you!
Mechanically? It's a bit iffy, but you can certainly make anything work if the table's still having fun! Might not be the best choice for a new player, though, as multiclassing is complicated.
Hi im completely new to this and was wondering if anyone could possibly help me out in some sort of way ive only ever played this once and would like a few pointers and tips cause this all seems fairly overwhelming
Have you read the free Basic Rules yet?
Few races have any meaningful affect on class features. Just think of it as extra additions, and don't worry about things meshing too much.
I have on ddb

Okay thank you
What is it you want from a druid warlock? How does that help you tell your story?
Bless I could use this too
You've gotta purchase it, unfortunately
I love druids sm and love the aspect of a airlocks fiend
That's because you can only access if you have Tasha's Cauldron of Everything or the Eberron book (or if your DM shares it).
Warlock*
Purchasing any artificer subclass will unlock the base class.
(You don't need the full book.)
What aspect, specifically?
You could have a fiendish druid without having to multiclass.
As always, I highly suggest avoiding multiclassing if you're a new player. I'm sure lots of the class options look cool and exciting, but just save that excitement for a second character in another campaign down the road!
I had a cool idea that my fiend would take the form of a crow and follows me around and with my Druid class I could wild shape
And I could like fuse with the fiend and use wildshape to create a crow fused animal
$1.99, yeah
That being said, an evergreen D&D saying is: flavor is free! If your DM is cool with it, you can always reflavor how your druid works as long as it doesn't change anything mechanically
Yh still quite new to this all so was just letting my imagination take control
Maybe take a wildfire druid for that fire flavor, and then just say they worship a fiend.
What is a wildfire Druid
Druids within the Circle of Wildfire understand that destruction is sometimes the precursor of creation, such as when a forest fire promotes later growth. These druids bond with a primal spirit that harbors both destructive and creative power, allowing the druids to create controlled flames that burn away one thing but give life to another.
That is so cool
Yh deffo then go down that route
And if I want to create a rouge character could I use any species or are good ones for that class
Unless adding warlock gives you some mechanical ability that you really need for your character's abilities to work the way you want, I wouldn't do it.
Species / races / lineages are mostly pretty modular. Pick what you think is cool!
Yh it was mostly for aesthetic reason
Awesome I made a arakocra rouge
Aesthetics are just a matter of how you describe your choices. They aren't the choices themselves.
Thank u sm for this help hope I don’t sound silly asking
Not silly at all!
You can purchase additional content on D&D Beyond
If you scroll down on this page, you can purchase the contents of the book individually, instead of buying the book as a whole.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/marketplace/sourcebooks/tashas-cauldron-of-everything
I love just creating characters because there are so many classes and ways to go
Buying any artificer subclass there for $1.99 -- alchemist, armorer, artillerist, or battle smith -- will unlock the rest of the artificer class.
And whatever you spend gets credited toward the cost of the book itself, too.
Do u need a lot of prior knowledge before joining a campaign
Depends on the group you're joining.
The free rules for D&D only come with the base 12 classes and 1 subclass for each. The player's handbook and other content books unlock more subclasses. Artificer was introduced in one of these additional contnet books, so you can only use that class by purchasing it (or having it shared with you)
Anyone with a Master Tier subscription can enable Content Sharing for a campaign.
When that's enabled, any game content purchased by anyone in the group gets shared with everyone else.
So if someone else in such a campaign had artificer unlocked, you'd be able to use it in that campaign as well.
Only for that campaign though
Then you're in the clear!
Looooll
Yeah, if you bought it yourself, you can use it anywhere on the site.
How much was it all
Oh
I thought it would be more expensive
On what
Ddb
Daym I might aswell buy it too
subclasses are $1.99 each, so buying the 4 artificer subclasses would be $7.96
Whereas you get all 25 subclasses from that book for $9.99.
And again, whatever you spend gets credited toward the cost of the book itself, too, making it $9.99 cheaper.
Makes it really easy to just get what you need when you need it.
When it comes to homebrew how do people get ahold of that
Make it themselves, generally.
But you can also look online to see what other people are creating.
And there's third-party publishers that put out whole books and stuff, too.
"homebrew" is player made content, so you can make it yourself. Or, if it has been published publicly on D&D Beyond, you can add it to your homebrew collection if you have a Hero Tier Subscription. If you are in a campaign with someone who has created homebrew content on D&D Beyond, their content will be automatically shared with you for that campaign
Cantrips are the lowest level of spell and can be cast without using a spell slot.
You’re not able to change them after a long rest with your prepared spells either.
As for the best ones to pick, #character-discussion can help you narrow down your choices.
You start with two cantrips, so I’d pick from two of the following categories:
- a ranged attack, like fire bolt
- a melee attack, like shocking grasp
- a utility spell, like mending
i.e. if your first pick gives you a ranged attack, I wouldn’t then pick a second ranged attack.
They let you add your proficiency bonus when you make an ability check for arcana or sleight or hand.
No right or wrong choice there. Just pick whatever helps you tell your story.
Yeah, that’s a good example.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/using-ability-scores#SleightofHand
Athletics or acrobatics, probably.
the difference of how well can you lie (deception) versus how well can you coerce someone to do something by imposing your will physically, verbally or with threat of violence (intimidation)
Skill proficiencies rarely come up in combat. Grappling or escaping a grapple would be the only time you ever make a skill check in combat. What matters in combat are your spells, weapons, armor, and other class/subclass features
Mmm....likely not many situations you will use sleight of hand in combat unless you are attempting to swipe something off someone that the party is either trying to distract or knows they cannot beat and thus are trying to grab something of importance off of them (keys for a cell, an arcane focus, etc). That, or trying to slip something onto someone before the party then retreats from the fight
but those are extremely situational and dependent on how the campaign is being run
That’s what the channel’s here for!
Honestly, it pretty much depends on the DM.
Your lifestyle choice can have consequences. Maintaining a wealthy lifestyle might help you make contacts with the rich and powerful, though you run the risk of attracting thieves. Likewise, living frugally might help you avoid criminals, but you are unlikely to make powerful connections.

If you're looking for an online game, the above link to #find-a-game or #750812887697588356 would be where yee seek. Other alternatives would be the various looking-for-group subreddits and facebook pages across the internet.
If an in-person game is more your preference I'd suggest checking with local libraries and gamestores for "Adventurers Leagues" or similar open-invitation games
Regardless of which you're going for, applying in many locations at once is the best bet for finding a game quickly, there are more players than DMs out there so finding a game can unfortunately often be the hardest part of playing D&D
hey I was wondering if theres any greek/roman themed places, gods, etc thats canon to dnd, im still reading the 5e core rule book and im not sure where i can find like a general rundown of the world
hi
If you're reading the Player's Handbook, I'd check Appendix B: Gods of the Multiverse for a list of deities. A few real-world pantheons are listed out in there and it also helps explain most of the major gods in the major settings.
Is there really a right way to play dnd?
Or can I just make my own stuff up?
Like what I want to do is if the monster has 54 hit points I want to roll the dice and if it's 17 I subtract 17 from the hitpoints
Can I do that?
Hello there! While I wouldn't say that there's a wrong way to play D&D and you can definitely make your own stuff in D&D, the rules are there to help give structure to how the game should generally play out.
Have you read the Basic Rules yet?
tysm, i'll check it out!
Yes
Of course; feel free to ask any more questions you got here.
Thank you very much
I can't see any chats
Perhaps stick to the rules before you start making up (homebrewing) alternative rules
Sure, but it will probably be not very balanced.
Yes I know
But hey, your table...
You do you.
Thank you for being cooperative
Ok
Thanks old man yelling at clouds
Can I use monsters from the book monster manual ?
Sure.
Thx
Can't wait to be a DM
How do I make a map?
I see big tables of expensive stuff
And I don't have money
Perhaps this is something you want to ask in #dnd-maps or #dm-discussion instead?
Oh ok thx
Please don't disclose your age (kinda against the rules)
Oh dang sorry
What if I have a monster that has 54 hitpoints and I roll the dice and it lands on 7 can I subtract 7 from his hitpoints or will that be too unbalanced?
You should use the damage dice based on the weapon or spell.
A longsword does 1d8 damage + Str mod.
Ok
Perhaps you should reread the Basic Rules again.
I'm honestly trying to get back into dnd but I can't find any servers with a campaign
Ok lemme go read it again
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.

Yeah same
Check out #find-a-game
just waiting to hear back from someone on there 🥲
Can I play dnd with me being the DM and my brother being the player or do I need more people?
Aren’t we all 😂🤣😂
Sure.
Yeah
But one thing I suggest is a dmpc
What's that?
Dungeons master player character
A sidekick to the player is preferable to a DMPC.
no its like having a character who is an ally to your brother's player character
I meant that honestly
Ok
So say that I'm the DM and my brother is a player can I the DM be a ogre that my brother has to fight or an ally on his journey?
Based on the monster manual btw
i mean thats kinda what the dm does
he controls the encounters runs the monsters etc
you don't have to stick to the monster manual either you can make stuff up
The DM is the "referee" who sets out situations for the player characters to act/react to.
Yeah but the monsters in the manual look sick
Example the ogre is trying to kill you and you as your sidekick helps you defeat them
Aaah ok
Baby steps. Use the official stuff for now until they understand how the game works.
oh yeah, but if you know your brother really loves some character wouldn't it be cool if they met/fought a similar version of them in the campaign
true
Bro speaking facts
my friend was telling me theres a specific dnd book thats greek themed, im trying to look it up but im just getting massive amounts of homebrew
Also
I'm old 😛
Yes my brother is younger than me with a big imagination he would have no idea about any rules of the game that's why I want to make changes of my own to the game
I've been playing/DMing D&D for about 42 years now 😛
thats a long time
See my name
respects cloud man
There are others here who have played longer than me.
lmfao
Yes I am (I just don't look it)
no, in fact he's been playing dnd since before his inception
Oh ok that's cool
he was reincarnated
Cough Cough mat Mercer Cough Cough
I use African black soap to look younger even though I'm still a kid lol
D&D itself is 50 next year, so I can see that
Definitely recommend that black soap
He hasn't played that long (he's younger than me)
I was making a joke sence every one who plays dnd probably knows who he is
i really wish i got into dnd during my highschool years, i just started and didnt realize just how invested i get to what evers given to me
I have a question is dnd more enjoyable as an adult or it's for all ages?
It's generally regarded as an "old person" game
Oh
I started playing when I was 10 or 11.
Oh wow
dang dood
That's amazing
but jizo, you're never too old to enjoy a story
So think of the kids in the first season of Stranger Things. That was me and my friends.
Oooooh
I got dragged here when in 5th grade a buddy of mine who had apparently been running campaigns decided to do it in elementary
Hmm
I don't have friend who want to play dnd unfortunately
So hard to find people my age with experience
Let alone willing to play
@cobalt frigate have any dnd horror stories that stuck to you?
or does that go to #tales-from-the-table
I've really gotta ask...
Are guns locked to gunslinger? Or can anyone use em just with less finesse or something
Hey everyone , I am new to the community. I have only been able to stay with a group that actually regularly played for about two months before they ghosted. So I was hoping to get advice on where I could start looking for online groups that are in need of a player. I’m open to learning on how to become a DM too, I love story telling and have a fast reaction time so I think I would be good at it.
Gunslinger isn’t an official class
Firearms are an optional feature that a DM can permit. As to who is proficient with them depends on whether a DM allows you to be or if you have to take the Gunner feat
The only official class with proficiency in guns is artificer
However the gunner feat also gives you proficiency
But you can use them without proficiency you just won’t get to add your proficiency bonus to attack and damaged rolls
It’s also entirely dm dependent
Got it! I know all about the dm option stuff but I more just wanted to know the gameplay rules for it! But thanks yall!
You can have a look in our #find-a-game channels, i would reply to posts in #looking-for-players and you can also make a post in #750812887697588356
Good luck
So three ways to get firearm proficiency
Thank you 🙏
Outer wilds is a very good game
all good
Extraordinarly good
I based a whole side mission in one of my games off of Echoes of the Eye
Fun times
Oh if you want help in DMs I could try and help without spoilers
Thanks!
Hello
Hey
I'm trying to get back into dnd
welcome man! ive been trying to get back into it as well after some time, you can check out the #find-a-game tab if you wanna get right into it (:
I don't really get the #find-a-game tab
me either honestly lmao
What don’t you get about it?
Read the instruction in #find-a-game. Then when you're ready to create a post you type /looking-for dm (or replace dm with player or community depending on where you want to post). The bot will pop up a form for you to fill out. Once filed out and submitted, the bot creates a post in the appropriate channel and attaches a thread. Use the thread attached to your post to add any corrections or additional details. When posting do not share any personally identifiable information such as your exact age.
@uneven jungle @sweet dagger you just gotta read through it. When you're done, tap/click on find a DM and it'll bring up a form for you to fill out.
Hi I'm new to dnd is there a channel for beginners?
this is it

Hello
Hi
Would you be wanting to dm
No I’m just starting out
#find-a-game is a good place to start looking for an online game
is anyone looking for someone newish for a game or campaign?
Check #find-a-game
yes
I am a newish player and looking for a group to play, i posted in looking for dm
Same
Hi everybody
Hi
hello there I was wondering if you like to play im new I really don't know what I'm doing but I learn quick 🙂 I made a character in the dndbeyond app it's just a matter of finding a game
Check out #find-a-game
Oh okay thank you
Hey y'all I built a Sorcadin Redemption and Clockwork Soul are the subclasses. According to the guide I'm following I should have access to Armor of Agathys but it seems I do not, is that because I don't have the book that has that or something?
Check out the last part of the Clockwork Magic feature
I saw but it is not in the list of spells I can learn
Armor of Agathys is a warlock spell, so you can swap a spell out for it via the Clockwork Soul feature
You have access to Armor of Agathys, you need to swap out one of your Clockwork Soul spells for it.
How do I do that? I don't see an option on the character manager
And if you're using D&D Beyond, you need to make sure you own either that spell or the Player's Handbook as a whole as it is not in the Basic Rules.
I do have the players handbook it's shared with me
How do I swap out the alarm spell for armor of Agathys?
Ah, now that's the issue! There's no way to officially do it, so you'd need to make a homebrew copy of the subclass with the swapped out spell(s).
🤷♀️ You'd have to ask a developer on the why of it, all I know is that it's true.
Yeah that'll be a hassle to do, man. I guess I'll try to do it later on PC.
I'd like to play my first game of DnD but I don't have a group to play with. Does anyone know how I could find a group to help me through my first experience?

only like reading the player's handbook 5e to get a better understanding
That is fine
I am 100% willing to help people starting, as long they are willing to learn
Stick ad an in #looking-for-players
@edgy shell Have you tried looking for an Adventure League near you? Your local game shop or maybe comic shop would know.
What is the best subclass for monk to start with?
As a new player? Open Hand is very beginner friendly and extremely useful!
Drunken Master is also pretty useful, and has some fun options at higher levels
You don’t get subclass till lvl 3 so you’ve a bit of time to think about it and what you want your PC to do, do you want to punch to heal people,do you want to fire punch people from 30ft away, do you want extra monk weapons
Is there is any feat, dual-class, or subclass that allows you to cast/concentrate during a Barbarian's Rage?
No
Alright, thank you 🙏
There are ways to get magical flavor, like through Barbarian's Path of Wild Magic, or by using spells that have a longer duration (Longstrider) that don't necessarily require concentration, though.
That's exactly what I was going for, how to add some actual spells to my Path of Wild Magic Barbarian 🙂
Path of Wild Magic is my favorite subclass in the game from an RP perspective
I built a war wizard 2/wild magic barbarian x that worked surprisingly well.
The reaction War wizard grants you is like a little baby shield that can be used while raging, and the limit of "can only cast cantrips" doesn't really apply since you already can't!
It'll absolutely eat your stats up, so you'd want an above average roll if your DM allows for that, or you'll just have to be okay with spreading your stats out more thin than a regular barbarian or wizard.
I'm strongly considering just going Wild Magic / Wild Magic (meaning Sorc) just so I can throw a fireball and maybe trigger more Wild Magic before I start raging lol; as for the stats, I don't think it's too bad - I'm using WIS, DEX, and INT as dump stats already (Using DEX as a dump stat is not ideal...but less painful for a STR-only Barbarian atleast with some extra AC from CON and high HP to absorb failed DEX saving throws...)
Go for it! I'm generally a fan of wizard since I can stick a bunch of utility spells in my book and ritual cast for out of combat utility, but anything goes (table depending)
This is starting to sound like a topic for #character-discussion. 😉
Yes....yes it does.
It's okay, I'm done, thanks John 🙂
new to playing wizard and just leveled up to level 2. do i get 2 new 1st level spells
hello! I am really new to TTRPGs in general, is there any youtube series or such where people play D&D? I know a bit about the rules, but watching some one play would probaly help a lot
There are many
Critical Role is probably the most popular one
Dimension 20 is also very good
ok I'll give them a shot. Thank you
Well, just be aware, your shot might be really long
Critical Role alone has over 1000 hours of content xD
You will want to search for critical role campaign 1 episode 1 on Youtube
Dice Camera Action and High Rollers are another two. You may find you vibe with one particular series style of play over the others
Yes: for each level of Wizard, you get 2 additional spells to your spellbook for free. At this level, you gain an additional Level 1 spell slot, and you have to take spells that you have slots for, so they will be 2 new Level 1 spells. However, bear in mind that your prepared spells is your Wizard Level + Intelligence Modifier, so you will not be able to have all of your spells prepared at once.
ok thank you so much
I envy you. Being able to play a wizard. I can’t seem to get a grip on all the spells and rules for them.
It is a matter of practice and experience
Classes that need to prep spells are really overwhelming for new players
Are their magic users that don’t have such a steep learning curve?
Agreed
But any amount of spellcasting is inherently more complicated than no spellcasting.
Hello, im very new to DnD and havent have a class yet. How should one start?
Pick whatever class sounds interesting!
Could also go with a martial class that gets limited spell casting at a later level. Fighter’s Eldritch Knight or Rogue’s Arcane Trickster would give you a shot to play a few levels, learn most of the rules, and then up the complexity when you take the subclass at a later time.
Ooo, good call! I do enjoy my Rogue
Dip a toe in and then ease into the shallow end, so to speak
Yup!
Think about what you want your character to do
Whether it is fighting melee combat, casting spells, supporting the group
There are many options
Do you have recommendations to podcasts or youtube channels that plays with beginners?
There is an episode of Critical Role where they go through the creation of a character and first time playing step by step
It is episode 12 from campaign 1
This is a great video where Wizards of the Coast staff (including some who have not played before) play through the original starter kit adventure. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hgNRe76o4_8&t=16s&ab_channel=Dungeons%26Dragons
But I don’t know any podcasts or channels specific for beginners sadly
do i gain 2 cantrips as well or
no
No, you get new cantrips only at certain levels
ok
Specifically 3rd and 10th...though you might also pick up another cantrip or two from Feats or class abilities, depending on what you pick.
You can reference when you get new cantrips easily from the wizard table, right at the beginning of the class description!
I liked JoCat’s d&d guide/tutorials, they’re short and sweet
But I started out w that plus Critical Role, kinda diving headfirst
On the wizard sections there should be a table that tells to how many spells and slots you get
I'm not sure JoCat's videos are the best for new players to get into the game. They are more humour and parody
I think their question was they are asking for shows that have beginners playing the game, not shows that are good for beginners to watch
oops🤭
Some people learn with highly technical video essays, some learn by watching other people play, and others learn by having light-hearted fun with the rules. Different strokes for different folks
Do you know what you want to do as a character
Cantrip doesnt cost a spell slot
Depends on your class! It's easy to think of it like this:
A cantrip can be used as many times as you want with no repercussions
But spells of 1st level and higher are tiring. As a level 1 druid, you can only cast two 1st level spells before you have to take a long rest (8 hours!)
Cantrips are weaker, but they can be used as many times as you want
Cantrips aren't prepared spells, either.
So you can't change them after a long rest.
HEllo
Welcome!
So if I am mulit classing if I level up can I choose what class I level up in?
yes
That's correct!
Thank you. You can direct message me if you'd like to talk about it more too.
Ok I assumed it wasn't but ok
Its because Im going for a Barbarian/fighter dragonborn
One class level at a time. So if you were a level 2 fighter and a level 3 rogue, you could level up to be 2/4 or 3/3
hehehehe
Yah
barbarian fighter dragonborn :3
Yes perfect thrashing combination in my opinion
Especially with the beserker subclass
Then again there is stamina to worry about
sure! do whatever you think sounds good
Im also making them unarmed because 😛
Ehh
monks love punching and kicking
I still want to be proficient in using weapons still tho but thanks
why? if you don't wanna use them
Yes I heard the monks subclasses are cool as well
Not so much for the Shadow subclass for the monk tho too rogue similar
I mean ehehe I still partially kinda do ehehe
it helps to think of classes more as what your character would do, rather than making a character from a class
You can use weapons as a monk
for sure, some cool ones too
Hmm I see
and remember, most dms won't limit you in style! if monks are proficient in bamboo stick, you could just ask the dm if it can be something cooler looking with the same stats
Yeah like a naginita
is this your first ever character?
I have created a character before
A lizardfolk fighter but I left dnd a few months too long and I almost forgot how to plsy
do you have the phb?
The character sheet?
just curious is the Canaith Mandolin one handed? it doesn't say anything about it being 2-handed or 1-handed. My idea is that i would use the Canaith Mandolin in one hand and a shield in the other.
player's handbook
Oh yes I do
I mean
its a guitar like instrument
I have yet to see someone hold the guitar hold down the strings and pluck them with one hand
but flavour it as a conductors wand or something
read all them cool tipz on character makin
Most (real world) musical instruments require two hands to play but yes, the rules don't explicitly say they require two hands though.
I got it two months back and I started reading it but I sometimes procrastinated or was busy but now Im making time
I have notes taken down for it as well
wow! doing better than most veterans then
In fact, the rules don't even say you need to play them! So long as you're holding the musical instrument
YESS!!!!
Wdym by tha?
thank you
note-taking!
Oh ok
a great skill :3
Im also trying to learn dnd so I can play with fwiends
hehe neato
I wantto either play as a wizard or warlocke
Both are fun! Warlock is a little bit easier for a new player (in my opinion), but I'm sure you could do either!
Nice, do you have in mind what style of spell caster you want to be
Facts
So im trying the dndbeyond to guide me in my creation
Do you know what your dm allows
that's a good choice! having a theme for your character can help you pick spells
Im assuming starting level 1
Yeah level 1. What do you recommend for leveling up? milestone or exp?
So thats up to your dm, i prefer milestone
DM's call.
I dont really have a dm yet nor a group to play with. I wanted to dive head first and create my character
Create characters to get used to the process and to learn the rules of the game. Don't worry about XP/milestone methods of leveling up.
Ask yourself who is the character you want to play, make a little background and keep that in your mind when you are looking at spells and put stats where they benefit what the heart is of your character if that makes sense
I would be willing to help if you want
Yes please. Can you guide me?
Have you read the (free) Basic Rules yet?
Yes
Have you watched Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube?
No I have not
I highly recommend you watch them:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hD-LWHhiseE&list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN&index=1
Okay, now you just find a table to play at.
Check out #find-a-game
Be warned that you may not find a game to play immediately. It may take days, weeks, or never (you can increase your chances by check out other D&D-related Discord servers' LFG channels, your local gaming shop, Facebook/Meetup D&D pages, reddit D&D LFG, etc)
Finding a good group to play with is like dating or a job interview — you may get ghosted, ignored, have drama, etc. before you find "the one."
is a component pouch start off with components or is it just a place to store components
The easiest way to understand a component pouch is to think of it having 'infinite' components in it. That's not actually true, but it replaces the need to have components for spells
(But only if those components don't list a price or aren't consumed as part of the spell)
So if your spell requires a bird's feather, the pouch will always have a bird's feather in it for you
ok
But it doesn't mean you can pull infinite feathers out to create a big cloak of feathers to sell
thank you

So I am very new to this as in I know literally nothing

Sure. Is there any quick answer to “do you prefer 1-9 or 3-11 throughout the campaign?”
It sounds like they're asking what level you want to start at. If you're a really new player, it will definitely be easier for you to start at level 1 and play until 9
Hello, my friends would like me to become the dungeon master for the group, what would any experienced person suggest going through to understand the process and role?
Some good, evergreen tips above!
Head on over to #dm-discussion to ask questions and for advice.
Here's the free adventure that was part of the original 5e Starter set:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/lmop
It's designed to be a tutorial for new DMs and players alike, and is a great "taste of everything" 1-5 adventures. I definitely recommend it for a first campaign, or the newer starter set which is a shorter 1-3 adventure.
Thank you so much
I just need a general idea of character building -
I’m thinking either an Assassin’s Creed-like (parkour, fast melee) or something with a gun, although I don’t think there’s guns in dnd
theres guns in some campaigns but theyre definitely not commonly used
Ah
In a fictional world I feel like my style would be more jumping on rooftops, killing things quick, then running the hell away from anything else I can’t kill
but a rogue definitely fits assassins creed and it even has an assassin subclass(though it is kind of bad)
Yeah thats the thing idk whats bad or good
eh you dont have to be super powerful just have fun and stuff its a collaberative game you know
though most people do appreciate you pulling your weight
but that isnt that hard to do even with assassin
Ye I tend to do something less of balance and more of devote to x role
Yeah thats the other part that concerns me
yeah but youre a beginner and pulling your weight isnt that hard
youll have a bit of leeway
Swashbuckler Rogue is a lot of fun. It's still hit-and-run but also a bit more of a duelist.
swashbuckler is like that dashing guy with a rapier outmanouvering guys
I mean looking at how I play games its usually full devotion to stealth which switches into full devotion to guns blazing when I get bored
dnd isnt your typical game though b ut i do see where youre coming from
If I get spotted I don’t try to get back into stealth I just go for it
I mean it said think of what type of character you’d want
something something the "AI" is controlled by a real person so stealth is probably a bit harder and whatnot
Wdym AI I thought it was a board game
Oh
An AC or hitman style thing would be cool but ultimately what is practical for dnd
its a team game and what youre listing is fairly solo infiltration probably due to your teammates not being built for that
Have a read through the basic rules and have a look over rogue. It's closest to the character youre looking to create. There's a few options within that can branch out, like if you want access to some magic or go full sneaky-stabby.
I cannot find any group to play in my timezone
:( (I'm CET-1 )
Check out other D&D-related Discover servers' LFG channels. Also try your local game shop and Facebook/Meetup D&D pages.
I don't have a gameshop in my town, but a Facebook group could be the way. Thanks :)
So I've never played before, and I really wanna try it out. I've used DnD Beyonds character creator to make a character I like, although I don't have his story and backstory fully fleshed out yet. I know making full-fledged campaigns and groups takes a lot of time and commitment, but I don't know if I'm that committed yet, so I just want something quick and easy. Could anybody help?
Have you read the (free) Basic Rules yet?
You can always try to join an one-shot adventure (it lasts one session, which typically between 2 and 4 hours long).
No, but I think I have a basic understanding of the rules from youtube videos and such. I tried joining a dnd club when I was younger, but I didn't get past character creation.

Have a look in the find a game channel linked above as well, sometimes people run "one shot" campaigns that are shorter in the looking for players tab.
@dawn umbra good luck
um I found out about the catapult spell on my first sessoin so I was wondering if I could drop a dagger then cast catapult on it the same turn (level 1 wizard)
I don't see why not, it would be a free action to drop the dagger itself, and then your action to use the spell
so it dosent take anything to drop a dagger
no bonus nothing?
not even while in combat
Yes, you can drop your dagger in your hand for free.
sweet 3d8ts of damage for everyone
I have a question
What does 21d20+147 mean?
Does that mean I have to roll 21 dices with 20 sides?
And add 147 to something?
Yes
But thats an absurd stat which realistically will never come up
that is simply how to interpret that notation
Its a type of dragon
Which you will not be fighting until higher levels
and franky might be home brew since i cant recall anything using a D20 as a damage dice
This is how to read it:
First number is number of dice
D means dice (duh?)
Second number tells you what size dice
2D20 is two twenty-sided dice
+4 is the modifier, added to whatver is rolled
So in order to beat an enemy what do I with those statistics
Have you read the basic rules?
Yes
There is a section on combat…
I've read it very good too but it doesn't give me the straightest answer
enemies have stats, the core of which are:
Its armor class (AC) and hit points (HP)
AC represents how hard it is to hit the enemy, which can be envisioned as the toughness of its armor and/or evasiveness
HP is the “life”. How much damage it sustains before dying
Yes I know that
Uh... What's a cantrip?
As a player, you can attack with spells or weapons. Attacking his two phases:
Rolling to hit
Rolling damage, if you hit
I just want to know what thing do I add the +4 in 2d8+4
A spell that doesn’t use spell slots to cast
Ok and once I do that for the enemy what do I do with it or what do I do next
I suggest you read the combat rules again they explain this in detail
Ok let me read it on dnd beyond
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hD-LWHhiseE&list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN&index=1
Basic Rules, page 72 is where the combat section begins
Yes, it doesnt seem like you’ve finished reading the basic rules; i think you need to do that as well as watching some of the videos

To roll 2 dice for 2d8+4 do I need to have 2 separate dice or I can roll the same one two times?
Hey guys I got the player handbook starter set and essential set and I have been struggling with understand how stuff goes in effect in the game and was wanted if there was like a good campaign video I could watch where they show how stuff works instead?
I recommend you watch the how to play dnd by wasd YouTube channel
Up to you if you want to buy more dice or not.
You just need two numbers. You don’t need two dice.
People collect dice sets, it's a separate hobby altogether.
Having two dice can make the process faster, though.
Oh but is it against the rules to use the same dice
No
No.
There are no rules like that.
Just remember/record the results of the first roll is.
If your first roll is a 3 and your second is a 6…
3+6+4
13
Where exactly are you seeing 2d8+4?
Monster manual
I just want to know what do those number need to correlate on battle
And where to add the 4
My first dnd book
Is monster manual
Where specifically?
Like a skeleton
You add it to the number you got from rolling 2d8.
Those are the damage dice.
It tellls how much damage they do for that particular attack and includes the appropriate modifer (usually Str or Dex)
Are you asking about the hit points, then?
So if I roll 2 dice with 8 sides I add those numbers and then I add 4 and that's the enemy damage?
Are you referring to the monster's hit dice?
That’s their hit point maximum.
Yes
Hit Points 13 (2d8 + 4)
Context helps.
Hit dice I'm pretty sure
13 is the average of 2d8+4.
You can give the monster a total of 13 hit points, or you can roll 2d8+4 to determine its hit points.
So it's showing you the average but in dice
You shouldn't bother rolling their hp. It's the mean average of their hit dice.
The average of a d8 is 4.5, so a 2d8 is 9 then add +4 (from Con modifer) is 13 hp
When they take damage, you subtract it from their hit points.
Oh alright I thought it was much more seriously complicated
You're overthinking this.
When they have no more hit points left, they’re dead.
Again, I recommend you watch the "Handbooker Helper" tutorials.
Y'know a lot of rules are underwhelming
I actually got where to play from WASD YouTube channel on how to play
He explains it in a well way
But I'm definitely not going to do anything with wizards spells and potions for now
I'll learn that later on
Wait why are you starting with the monster manual
Thats why you’re here asking about all this stuff - of course it has no context, you havent read any of the rules yet
Put the monster manual down, it doesnt matter at this stage. Learn the basics first
Knowing “d8” means eightsided dice is a thousand times more useful than knowing how much damage a dragon does
If you're only going to be a player and not a DM, you shouldn't be reading the Monster Manual.
If anything it's considered "cheating" for players to know about the monster statblocks...
I can see how but... if it's official is it really cheating if you are familiar with said monsters?
A player would need to be able to disregard his knowledge and play their character as though they do not know the creatures stats
It is meta knowledge that needs to be disregarded in role play
But to the more practical point - this person does not yet know how to play, the monster manual does not teach you how to play, so its a waste of time to go thru it
Because if the players encounter a monster and know its strengths and weaknesses they could play on that even though their characters may not know.
Ultimately it doesn’t matter if it’s “officially” cheating. It only matters whether your DM and your fellow players believe it is.
Odds are good that they will.
Hi
Hey there!

Yooo same
Do I'm planning on making a warlock for the first time. First out of curiosity what are the best warlock subclasses?
Hexblade’s probably the most popular in my experience.
What’s your concept?
I'm planning of making a warlock with an imaginary friend as a patron, someone that was always there and my PC would know the friend was really uncanny but always shrugged it off as just imaginary
Fey sounds like the most thematically appropriate
Is this friend kind or mischievous?
Hiya, I'm really new to DND like I want to try it out, sorry if I'm interrupting y'all
Sounds like #character-discussion
Huh true
Welcome! There’s some handy links here to get you started, but feel free to ask if you have any specific questions.

Didn't know where to post it as I also wanted to know about the subclasses themselves
Most of them are in the PHB, Xanathar's Guide to Everything, and Tasha's Cauldron of Everything plus a few other supplements.
Hi im currently making a character sheet on a google spread sheet for the first time how do I turn a skill from proficient to expertise
That probably depends on the specific sheet.
You may need to ask whoever created it.
Ok, thanks
K I made My character but now where to find a game?
The find a game everything both confuses me and scares me
Check out #find-a-game
Just did
I don't know how to fill out the things in #find-a-game
At the bottom there is edit reply I think click it and then you can say it
I know that but I don't know what to put in
Press one of the text bubbles?
What subclass of warlock were you thinking to use
The ones he’s discussing in #character-discussion
Is it possible to multiclass two subclasses from two separate classe?
If you were a level 1 sorcerer, and multiclassed 3 levels into ranger, you would have a sorcerer subclass and a ranger subclass
Is that what you mean? I don't entirely understand
More or less but I’m talking more in if there can be a benefit of multi-classing with subclasses
like a synergy between subclasses that work together for the purpose of multiclassing?
When you choose your subclass at level 1, 2 or 3 (depending on your class), you must continue to take the subclass features provided by that subclass at the appropriate levels, and no other.
Asking yet another dumb question, are canptrips changeable like other prepared spells or one you select them, their there for good? Not clear on the rules when I read... that or I am blind.
I believe you choose them aswell
As is, outside of Artificier who can change cantrips whenever they level up, the cantrips you choose are what you are stuck with. If permitted to use, Tasha's does offer the other casting classes the ability to swap out cantrips anytime they hit an ASI (I think without looking over all of them)
can you use cantrips if your levl one
yes. Cantrips are considered level 0 spells and do not consume a spell slot. Anyone can, in essence, cast a cantrip if they know them
is anyone starting a new campaign rn
Check #find-a-game
Is anyone awake to talk about an idea?
That's the magic of timezones!
I don't understand. You could?
Yeah we can talk about your idea
Yes, people are awake because it's daytime for much of the world, due to timezones.
It's 12:25 am right now for me.
In fact, it's daytime for the majority of the Earth's population.
Oh. I'm sorry! Who should I message for my idea?
Just post it here.
That's what these channels are for.
Or in the appropriate channel if it's themed to one of those topics
I think it might be themed? I'm not sure because it's not the Orc I thought of first.
If it's a character, #character-discussion
Should I not speak other language?
English only server, I'm afraid
It's because they only have sufficient English language moderators
Oh. I'm so sorry! I wasn't going to speak only in Arabic, just say hello.
Nothing to apologize for, it's a sensible question to ask.
Hi all,
I haven't played DnD in a good while and want to DM a homebrew. It will be centered around a weird/fantastical universe, with the purpose of exploring different "dimensions" (worlds of hats/star wars planets concept). For the purpose of the first session, ill be giving player a couple dimensions to choose from, on top of exploring the 'base' area they start.
ive never homebrewed, so I'm curious, what should I prepare and to what extent? I'd prefer to be 'loose' with the rules because its been a while and let them do what they want within sensiblity.
I'm really nervous in the first place because I want them to interact a lot with each other as I myself am not the best at RP, but I can handle giving them settings and simple NPCs.
#dm-discussion could help you out
ah okay. thank you!
Hello
Good morning!
@void pecan please reply to people either in their thread or via private message, not here
Sorry
How do i make a bard or battlemaster with point buy? I've never dealt with classes that can't just max con,str/dex and 1 spell stat then dump other 3 stats.
Battlemaster prioritizes strength then con then dex. Bard wants charisma then either strength or dex
Maybe
The important part is the high strength or charisma
I usually just give a character three 8(-1) stats and three 15(+2),but i don't know if i should do that for the bard(jack of all trades?)and battlemaster(15 str,15 con, no idea what to do with other stats)
I think that's best asked in #optimization , it's a bit beyond the area of newcomers, and people there might be able to crunch the numbers better
Morning
Ok, thanks
HI all. I am newish to the pen and paper game, I am familiar with 5e rules (video games and such) but I am not fluent in anything tabletop. I finally talked my girlfriend into playing but were having trouble finding people who are interested in joining us so this seems like the modern way to get a group together. Where would I start #find-a-game ? Were on the older side, for reference I was playing in 1980, so we wouldn't mind an older crowd. Also, she isn't a "Nerd" (I am and say it proudly!) So I'm not looking for a bunch of elitists who will belittle her, or I, I have to ease her into this.
Yup, starting in #find-a-game is the safest bet for you! Obviously it will take some time to find the right group, but I'm sure you folks can bump into one with enough effort! You can also check out #750812887697588356 if you're both planning on playing, or #looking-for-players if one of you is planning on being the DM.
Okay so im looking to start dnd I need to make my character I’ve only played once or twice on table but that was years ago and I wanna get started again what should my approach😭
Well if you feel like you've kinda got the basics and are just looking for a game, then I'd suggest looking out for oneshots, Adventure League or even westmarches if playing online- these are low commitment games you can play to see if you get along with folk, and then begin forming your own group from- or get lucky and stick with that group.
if in person, then local gamestores, facebook and meetup.com all potentially might have local games listed.

Uhhh so we’re would I go to start a game or make my character or whatever u have to do 😭 im playing online btw
Depends on the game you join.
People might use discord severs + dice bots, or use a VTT (Virtual Table Top) like roll20, owlbear rodeo or foundry.
Take a look at #find-a-game for tips on finding online games.
I have a quick question, are like custom storylines ok like One Piece or Naruto or Black Clover???
Nothing's stopping you from running a story like that if that's what your players are interested in! Just be sure to make it obvious that it's not going to be a traditional D&D world if you're still recruiting new players.
Ok thxs!
Hello! Should I try a Warlock multi-class question here or in #dnd-rules ?
#character-discussion would be best
Thank you!
Hi it's my first time playing the game and i want to ask if someone had some tips and tricks that i can use when i play(I'm a player)
Sure! What class are you playing?
Try to engage in roleplaying sooner than later, thats the bread and butter of the game for me.
This includes thinking about what your character might do even if it doesnt lead to the best possible outcome in your player mind. Some of the funniest moments come from screw ups.
I'm a fighter
Thanks
General tips are to take a piece of paper for some notes, just for things that come up, like people you meet or things that sound like they are worth lookign for. You don't need to transcribe the events! Just something like...
Marcus - town mayor - offered gold for orcs @ the old mill
Thanks i will try i still need to have a group first
So, as a fighter, the main thing to remember is that you are eventually going to be able to hit a lot more than other people, and you are eventually going to be very hard to hit...but at level 1, those advantages haven't really come out yet. So don't feel like you are obliged to take all the hits just yet.
Also, your main advantage is your ability to use better martial weapons than almost anyone else - use it. If you are finicking around with daggers, you aren't playing to the strengths of your class. If you want to use a weaker option for flavour purposes, ask your DM about just reflavouring a better weapon into a more thematically interesting one.
Wait another question does the dual weapon loadout with battleaxe and shortsword have a sense because i used that to make my class and I'm not sure about it
So like if i can use different weapons that the DM can give me
Or i have to only use them from the books
Two-weapon fighting is....not very good. To get the most out of it you need:
- A feat: Dual Weilder, which would be necessary to allow you to even two-weapon fight with a battleaxe
- A fighting style: Two-weapon fighting, which gives you your proficiency bonus on the second attack...
And for all this you get one additional attack which uses your bonus action, meaning you can't use any other ability that uses your bonus action. Depending on your subclass, this can be a deal-breaker. One extra attack might seem great now, but it's less great when you are doing multiple attacks per round anyway at higher levels.
Ok i will change my character then thanks
And do you know if someone as a group because I'm from italy and idk the times that other players have
For a group, you'll need to look in #find-a-game , and the linked channels of #750812887697588356 and #looking-for-players
Ok thanks jale
No problem! If you want to discuss your character in depth more, #character-discussion is the best place to go.
Thanks i will if i have any questions have a nice day
Me and my family were planning a D&D night, and I'm the Dungeon Master, what should I do?
Do a good forrest chase
Like have a random kobold watch them and see what they do and make sure if they see the kobold it runs
what is a kobold lol
It's like a dragons henchmen
I recommend new DMs try a published adventure - something like Lost Mines of Phandelvar - as it can help them focus on the mechanics of the game and making DM rulings without having to build out a whole adventure on their own.
don't I have to create all the types of enemies?
Not with a published adventure - the monsters are provided for you.
It even provides maps and all that.
I don't think we have the enemies, but we have the map
All you got to do is read the adventure and then guide the group through it.
from what my dad told me, I have to make everything
and my mom and I made the basic plot already
Only if you want to make everything up on your own - which is fine.
But this is why I recommend running a published adventure first as it can help you figure out how to make and run your own adventures later. Think of it as a guide to making your own adventures.
I figured I could take some inspiration from Elden Ring
Sure go right ahead and grab inspiration from everywhere - but I still recommend running a prewritten publsihed adventure so you can see how D&D frames and sets things up.
But if you want to run your own thing - go right ahead! The whole point of D&D is to have fun so as long as you focus on that, you'll do well.
Yo guys, I'm a first time DM and running a fully homebrew setting. This is my players' 2nd session and I don't know how I should prepare, I've looked on YouTube and everyone's saying different things, and it's really confusing. If any of you guys have a method that you use to prepare consistently well for your sessions, I would really appreciate it 😄
By the way, my next session is tomorrow, so I'm panicking a bit 😂
No need to panic! The most reliable advice for any situation is "It's a game and it's meant to be fun". Are you running it with your friends?
Hi
I start by outlining. Main events that will drive the plot, followed by the locations of each event, followed by the NPCs that inhabit the place
Cheers !
Do dragonborns get natural armor
Via a feat they can but on their own no
Have you considered running a premade adventure, as described in the posts above you? If you’re starting out, it would probably be a big help to have the story, maps, and enemy stats already donr
Look at the race page; if natural armor is not a listed feature, they dont have it
Hi guys! I’m new here!
Ahoy and welcome!
Up to speed on how to play D&D already, or here to learn the ropes?
I have a question how many spells can you have like how many cantrips
It depends on your class and level.
Level zero and barred
Check the table for each class, it will usually list that.
That depends on your class, primarily.
Though you may gain additional spells from class features or feats.
There is no level zero. 1 is the lowest you can start at.
I presume you mean a Level 1 Bard: They know 2 cantrips, and 4 Level 1 spells.
But the Bard Table shows how many cantrips you’d know at each level.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/bard#TheBardTable
Here to learn the ropes. I’ve always wanted to play and I bought the starter set dragons of storm-wreck isle
Great! That's a fantastic adventure to learn from. I'll trigger the bot post which also has some useful video links, but if you are reading the starter set you don't need to re-read the basic rules

I’m level 0 brad how many can trips can I use
As said above, there is no Level 0 in DnD 5e.
A LEvel 1 bard knows 2 cantrips, and 4 Level 1 spells.
Thank you so much for helping me
Again, the Bard Table shows how many spells you know at any level.

hello! real quick question, is there a way i can transfer my drawing of a character into a "official" dnd beyond character creation page?
i just drew him and made a name and such, but since its my first time i was wondering if i can only make a character on the website options
You should be able to upload a portrait onto your character sheet. Unless I'm misunderstanding you?
oh ok so ill go back and upload the art then
then another thing, the certain race that this character is not listed on the website option when you choose to create a charcter, would i need to purchase this particular race? the $1.99-ish
its that lion race
Yes, or have the book it's from or have content sharing with someone who does own that content.
Yes, you would have to either buy it individually or have the content shared if you're in a campaign that uses D&D Beyond
a physical copy of the book
No, digitally own. If you have a physical copy, you can re-create it privately via DDB's homebrew function.
If you're playing person...
ok i get it know!
thank you both! ill go ahead and do just that (get that certain race of character)
How do I make a searching list like the others in (looking-for-DM) or (Looking-For-players) chats
Start with /looking-for and select dm or player or community depending on where you want to post. The bot will give you a form to fill out. Fill it out, hit submit, bot creates post in the approrpiate channel and creates a thread under it (to use for clarification and communication with folks). Just like it says in #find-a-game (read it carefully). Also do not share any personally identifiable information like your exact age - we have to delete a lot of folks posts because they don't follow that rule.
Great! thanks for the help
is diamond soul a feat ?
No its a monk feature
mmh
What are you looking at? The monk section specifically says its a monk class feature at lv 14
i was just wondering if there was a way to get it without spending 14 levels in monk
Hey, I'm a newer DM. Played a good bit of Pathfinder back in college 10 years or so ago but my daughter has recently gotten super into it, so I started running Phandelver together with her with me playing a PC and trying not to spoil myself too much.
We've been having a hard time keeping track of spells, features, conditions, HP, sorcery points, hit dice, etc during the games. I feel like it's important to keep the game moving especially for a kid like her who has very little patience for me trying to figure out if that bugbear lost his reactions last turn.
I wanted to check in to see if any more experienced players had any suggestions for tools or organization for that sort of thing. We're just using pure pencil and paper right now. Straight character sheets, notes, and that's about it.
Head on over to #dm-discussion if you want DMing advice.
I wasn't sure. I was also looking for suggestions for my daughter as a player too. Just basically any advice or tools that make a game run more smoothly.
e.g. I was thinking about creating a laminated sheet of some sort with her spell slots and sorcery points on it so she can mark them off with dry erase marker or something like that vs having to just write it down and erase with paper etc
Idk guess I'm just curious if you experienced players have any particular tricks or tools you like to use during your games
Depending on your budget there are character markers for spell slots, conditions, and such. (You can use plastic toy rings of different colours to represent conditions like Prone, Exhausted, etc)
Mmm OK I'll look into that for sure
As for maps, you can use dry erase boards.
Oooh rings sounds like a good idea. Hard to miss. I bet we've got some little colored hair ties or something around here
You can print out the 5E character sheet PDF
https://dnd.wizards.com/resources/character-sheets
Plastic tops from soda/water/etc. bottles can work well if you have an array of colors.
Yeah I do actually have a dry erase grid from back in college that we've been using. We've been using lego guys as players and creatures. It's worked well enough
There's also class-specific character sheets. For example: https://www.dmsguild.com/product/232270/Class-Character-Sheets--The-Sorcerer
Again, depending on your budget you can use DIY or buy high-end miniatures and environment tilesets.
Or if you're more technical you can always use a VTT (virtual tabletop) with a projector and project the map from the ceiling to a table.
Oh shoot I wish I'd known about the character specific sheets. That looks much more helpful than, like, just writing "Sorcery points: 1/2" under equipment.
If you're new, no reason you'd have known that!
I'll take a few of those to the printers in a few days, ty
Glad that helps. Feel free to chime in with other questions or trouble spots as they arise.
If you have a printer you can always print out illustrated tokens to represent characters and monsters and paste them to cardboard.
Yeah we're actually pretty OK on the characters and monsters. We had a lot of lego guys 🙂
It's been a ton of fun playing with her so far. She's only 7 and I figured you'd probably at least wanna be a teenager before getting into TTRPG stuff, but I had a revelation when we were playing make believe at her insistence the other day that we were basically just doing D&D without dice.
So now she gets to RP Elsa, like always, except also we get to kill goblins while we do it
That's all TTRPGs are: make-believe with rules in place and some dice rolls. It's more structured, which can be nice but can present a definite learning curve. Still, it lets anyone be creative and do virtually anything.
I started playing D&D when I was 10 or 11 (think the kids from the first season of Stranger Things).
I have to reskin all her spells to be ice themed before she'll use them 😆
If you want an even simpler ruleset, check out Necrotic Gnomes' Old School Essentials (OSE), which is a modern remake of the D&D Basic rules from the early 1980s. The rules are much more simple than 5E or another other edition. (They have a free SRD you can check out)
The Basic edition was the one I started off playing back in the early 80s.
Cool I'll look at it, thanks. We've been OK with the complexity so far tbh. It's mostly just been the organization that's been a little tricky.
That and trying to explain why "Elsa" can cast, like, Feather Fall and stuff
"IDK man the cold air slows you down or ... something"
You can reflavour Feather Fall like an ice slide, ice lift (elevator), or an ice parachute.
mm the ice slide is a better excuse yeah
Flavour is free.
"You can turn that guy into a sheep. But, like, in a cold way"
Snow globe.
Hey I wanted to get into DND but didnt know where to start so I decided to come here can anyone help me get started?
