My dm is also kinda new and he’s nervous that he doesn’t know all this stuff.
After I just showed him this chat lol
"My paladin believes in these specific things. Does this world have a god like Bahamut that represents these beliefs?"
He doesn’t have to. He can decide how to run things and what to include/ignore as he likes.
But the table can weigh in too for what they want to see/avoid.
I see
Honestly, if a player came to me and named a specific god they wanted, I'd just add it to the game -- regardless of whether it was "supposed" to be there.
Same, honestly.
Yeah that’s a good thing I guess
Some DMs encourage players to add to the world. Some don’t. It varies a ton.
D&D is ultimately a game meant to tell a shared story about the player's characters.
So IMO, the players should be able to help shape the world itself to an extent.
"I want my character to be from a mining town." Boom. Now there's a mining town.
Is there an existing town that's already known for mining? Could be.
Is there an existing town that could be changed to a mining town? Could be.
Did I just make up a town that wasn't there before? Could be.
Hmm
As for "what do they do" this also depends on the setting, but buy and large, the answer will be "nothing" or maybe "receive prayers"
Generally speaking, gods exist outside the game itself, and are more like concepts, or entities that exist on a different plane. Very rarely do they ever directly interact or affect a character or story
In a setting like Theros, they may very well take a more active role in the story, though.
And in another setting, there might not even be any direct evidence of their existence.

i have created my character sheet online, is there anyway for me to add it here for someone to look at it and gime me feedback? it is the first one i have made
If you’ve made it on D&D Beyond you can post a link to it in #character-discussion , or post a link to the PDF.
okay thank you!
I'm extremely new. I don't understand how you find people to play with. I know you are supposed to post on the website with your character, but I don't even know how to do that.
Are you looking exclusively online
So, the first thing you need to understand is that there is no automatic matchmaking system or anything like that. The responsability for finding a group falls on each individual person. There are a lot of tools to help make it easier, but there is no "click a button to play D&D" type of thing. You'll need to reach out to a DM/Group that you think fits you, or make a post in some public forum so that a DM/Group can reach out to you. This server has channels dedicated to exactly that. If you go to #find-a-game it will walk you through how to do so.
Oh thank you!
@fallen surge honestly that was helpful for me too, so thank you. But I read he said that we were supposed to post our characters? where would we do that?
And onto that, how would we post that we're looking for players or DM? the channel states that im not allowed to text there so im just wondering how we would scout. I already found where to post my character
There’s instructions in #find-a-game on how to post in those channels.
i wanna make a middle aged stick figure as a character for dnd
That's probably something you'd want to discuss with your group first.
i dont have one yet
But it's possible in theory.
(i have no friends)
If everyone else is expecting Game of Thrones, a random stick figure character probably isn't going to fit very well.
You have the power to make whatever you want. The sticky bit is getting a DM who would say yes to it.
The further you get away from the books, the less chance of getting that "yeah that's fine" from your DM.
But if everyone else is being silly with it, too, then have fun.
You don’t need to post your character anywhere. If you want help creating a character, you can post your starting point (or just say you’d like some help) in #character-discussion. But as for actually joining a campaign, that is not a requirement. Some DMs might actually prefer if you wait until after you join before making a a character, because they might have their own rules you need to follow for character creation in their game.
As for how to post in #750812887697588356 you go to #find-a-game and use the bot that’s in that channel. If you run one of the bot commands, it will give you a form to fill out, and then automatically generate a post for you in the proper channel with the answers from your form
Thank you! I'm on that rn! It asked what style of game we play though, does that mean like medieval, fantasy, modern?
Or have I completely missed the target there
Just in general, what do you think would make a fun game?
There's no set of specific terms. It could be about the setting or the genre or the overall vibe.
If you want medieval or fantasy or modern, that's a valid answer.
Oooh I see, gotcha thanks!
Like Spam said, tell them about the type of game you'd like to play.
If you want lots of combat, that's a valid answer.
If you don't want any combat, that's a valid answer, too.
Yall are really helpful, thank you for your answers!
You are allowed to interpret the questions however you see fit, but generally people use that to talk about whether they want things like lots of combat, or puzzles, or role play, or things like that
Basically, DMs will look at that and say "oh, this person really likes puzzles, they'd be a perfect fit."
Or they'll say "yeah, I'm not putting puzzles in my game" and find a better fit elsewhere.
But the better you can describe what you're looking for, the more accurately someone can match it.
I know some people conceptualize the type of game they play in a ratio of combat:roleplay. A 80:20 game will have very little roleplay, and be much more focused on the nitty-gritty of turn based combat, for example.
Poor exploration left out in the cold.
Guess they'll have to go find it 😄
How do Wizards obtain their spells? Should they search for it somewhere or is it simply given to them?
You get 2 new ones on a lvl up but if you find spell scrolls or another wizard to copy from you can copy those spells into your spell book (this costs money for the special ink and paper)
Alright,so you are simply given 2 new spells of your choice on a level up which are copied into the spell book, but you can search for more to add to your book, correct?
Yes
How bad would it be if I made a Pokémon dnd 😂
Someone has done it already I believe. (Not officially licensed)
Yea I’ve see it
Yeah a WBTW campaign I was in had a random bulbasaur appear at one point
It was kinda funny
How do you join a group , I am extremely brand new to this. I literally just made a character and I'm trying to join a game.
Check out #find-a-game
I haven't played a single game nor do I know anything about d&d but I really really really want to learn and have no clue where to start... Help😭

They can be versatile but require some work by the player to keep track of a few things
Namely, theyre full spellcasters, so you need to know your spells; however, they also can wildshape, which means you need to have the stats ready to go for the shape you pick
some of their subclasses give additional ways to wildshape to add further options
This wide array of options means you can fill different roles but also means you need to decide stuff
Lastly some of their spells can be problematic at the table so the player and DM must communicate and agree before game on how theyll work
I've been wanting to get into dnd for a while now. I've been playing baldurs gate 3 and watching viva la dirt league do some stories I wanna play a monk and was woundeing if that was a good place to start. thank you for any advice that can be given
Not terrible, they have more things to keep track of than say a fighter but I think it’s doable
Literally no idea what I'm doing or where to start but d n d looked fun

Awesome ty
I don't need to pay anything to get started right? It's not like games where you need to pay for charcters
No
The basic rules are free and that’s all you need
There are a bunch of expansion books you can get if you get into it tho
The Basic Rules are free. Think of it like a video game demo. If you want more options you will have to "unlock" additional playable races/classes by buying the books (or borrow them).
Buying the books is always the best option but looking things up can still work.
If you join a group, often the DM shares their books with their players.
As a DM playing online, I share my digital books with my players (of course I have to subscribe to the Master Tier to have this feature)
guys if im doing a custom background is it possible for me to create my own feature
Sure but I would say to work with your DM.
the thing is i dont really have a set dm
like i go to play but there is only one shots at the place i go to and theres a different dm every week
Well, just create characters to get used to making one because more than likely your future DM will ask you to create a new character.
yeah i made one before but like this character im making is kinda complicated in a way
also i write down the background feature in features & traits right
i only have a pen so if i write it in the wrong place im gonna die
The fillable character sheet PDF would save you ink.
probably
wait do i even write the background feature thingy because on other sheets for some reason i dont have anything on there of a background feature
maybe its because its not custom
Ok, when you say “background”…are you referring to your character’s back STORY, like where he came from and such?
Or his background, which is a specific mechanical part of character creation that provides proficiencies, equipment, and maybe gold
You for some reason dont want to use one of the available ones, like Noble, Sage, soldier, etc?
i guess i dont
As part of your custom background are you planning to give yourself proficiencies, equipment or items?
yeah
Then you should probably write out what this background is and what features it adds, as specifically as you can, and show your DM before game to get it approved
Is there some reason why none of the available ones dont work for you?
well i guess its that the backgrounds dont really fit my character im making
Ok
What’s the character?
The custom background rules do say this:
If you can’t find a feature that matches your desired background, work with your DM to create one.
So yes, you can do that, but you can’t do it without your DM.
U may want to #homebrew if u want help designing a custom background. Or #character-discussion for help designing your character
And honestly, the whole game is moving in the direction of better encouraging player-created backgrounds anyway. I like it. 👍
Hey everyone. I’m looking to join a group. Unfortunately the group I was in (in person) disbanded so I’m looking for a fun new group
There’s a place for finding groups #find-a-game #looking-for-players #750812887697588356
Thank you Anubis! I’ll check them out!!
Didn't expect the read to take that long
But this game looks super intresting
But I feel like I'm going to forget like 90% of what I just read by the time I find people to play with
As long as you know the basics of how combat and stuff works you don’t to remember the rest
You can refer to the rules later. You don't need to memorize everything.
Ask here if you have any questions
Sounds good
Should I make advancement milestone or xp?
Milestone is most commonly used but that’s up to a dm when you join their campaign
Just put it for milestone now
I recently got into dnd, told my girl and turns out she’s a hugeee fan, was looking for ways to play with people online?
You can look in the #find-a-game channels
You can make a post in #750812887697588356 or reply to posts in the threads under them in #looking-for-players
Thank you!
Is it better to just to with a pre set background since I don't quite know what I'm doing yet?
Probably
Cool
What should I put for faith? I don't really remeber any of the religions it mentioned
Feel free to leave any of the backstory and world elements blank at this stage and ask your DM about what would be most suitable in the setting they are running
Ah I didn't think about that
Otherwise, you can look up the setting you are playing and read up on the different religions or faith options and pick one that you like the sound of
Do you know if they are running in an existing setting? or will it be a homebrew world?
Oh I don't even have a group I'm just making a charcter
I'm entirely new, d and d just looked cool
Oh nice! Thats always a lot of fun. Well in that case, you can really just decide based on what sounds the most fun to you
Are you using DnD Beyond? or going pen and paper?
The dnd and beyond website
Yeah good call, its very friendly for new players. You will be able to find a lot of information on the site about world lore and stuff if you are interested in getting into the weeds with stuff like Gods, Religion and Deities etc.
Otherwise heaps of Wikis exist that go into detail on a lot of the different systems.
If you are after the Classic Trad Fanstasy DnD experience, have a look at The Forgotten Realms setting.
Thats where a lot of the official modules are set
Thank you! I'll be sure to take a look
hey any recommendations for getting into campaigns?
been trying for awhile and i join the servers but never actually get games
Hi!
whats up :))
I'm new here too, actually
I just finished my first character
nice, what did you make?
Half-elf Ranger! Honestly it's all a little bit intimidating 😅
Thats pretty cool, my first character that i made last night is a monk druid flavored as a samurai
Got some nice lore text going and everything

Hey guys, Im new to DnD and was wondering if I could DM without playing a single game lol. I've talked about trying out dnd with my friend but our main reason for not going through with it is having to have a stranger guide us, we just felt like we'd be too conscious this way. If I learned to DM we can finally play, would anyone recommend this way of doing it?
yes
it will be a trainwreck. a fun trackwreck
Absolutely you can
@gusty hedge https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/phb
Watch some youtube videos with tips, and maybe some live plays to get a feel for the game and you'll be fine
especially with friends
You can also check out the Lost Mines of Phandelver Adventure on D&D Beyond as it is free and comes with tips for first time DM's and DMing in general as it is a beginner adventure :)
If you can tell a story and understand the basic rules you can DM, as long as people are having fun and rolling shiny math rocks t will be fine.
If you want physical books and stuff the DnD Starter Kit comes with core rules, Lost mines of Phandelver, a bunch of dice, and premade and blank character sheets. By far one of the easiest ways to get a group started with dnd
Note that if he doesn't have the PHB, he won't be able to see that. PHB isn't free.
hello everyone, newcomers here
It's been a while i wanted to play DnD and i recently by the initiation kit Dragons of the tempest islands
i will soon play it with some friend as the DM, so do you have some tips to help me ?
Read a lot about all the cool things you would like to do. Bring the rules that apply to your character with you and be knowledgeable about them.
Having Questions to your DM is fine but asking every 5 minutes what your spell does is annoying.
Make sure you know your character and the basics of fighting and you are fine. Its learning by doing time 🙂
And remember its supposed to be a fun game for everyone
thx
How to enter the game. Help me please 😭

@rugged juniper
How does roll 20 work
The website? The DM sets up a campaign in there, with a number of scenes and a compendium of creatures. Then players join that game, and will have control of their characters. Clicking parts of their character sheet lets them roll for their abilities, and the results are reported in the chat.
Roll20 is a VTT, where DnD Beyond isn't. So you actually have a map of the world, and move tokens around it.
Here's a DnD Beyond article about online play. Roll20 falls under the "Virtual Tabletop" part of it. They are kinda downplaying the importance of a Virtual Tabletop, but in reality I think that they are very commonly used for online play:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/750-new-players-guide-how-to-play-d-d-online
D&D is also developing an official VTT, which will be 3d: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1474-d-d-virtual-tabletop-a-closer-look
Thanks
Bits of it can be, but it’s up to your preferences.
The most general would be the stuff found in the monster manual, player’s handbook, and the dungeon master guide. There’s over 40 years worth of stuff tho so it goes for a bit.
Something to be aware of is that there are several official DnD Settings, the most prominent being the Forgotten Realms. This is what's called a "Kitchen Sink" setting, so really anything you can imagine in mythology will exist somewhere. Aztecs, minotaurs, baba-yaga, norse gods...all appear somewhere in that world.
I enjoy playing in the Forgotten Realms. others prefer more focussed official settings like Eberron or Greyhawk. And some like to make their own world entirely.
If you like 40k Lore, you will probably enjoy Forgotten Realms lore, as it similarly has a long history with lots of added bits.
ooo
I know this has a place to ask for dms but I’m just looking to learn and have fun

Hey, i did the tutorial quest in the website, what's a good next step to learn ?
Read the Basic Rules.
Hello......I never played dnd before....I have been in the server for a while but I'm always too shy to ask "where can I get started?"
find a campaign on DnD beyond or Roll20
Ok
@golden wyvern
Welcome! Have you read the basic rules and gotten up to speed on how to play yet?
It's also a great idea to run through character creation at least once before looking for a campaign, so that you can then have a conversation with the DM about what you want to play.
I did read most of the player handbook but i felt like it made DND seem even more complicated
Haha yeah! it can do that.
In practice, a lot of the PHB is going to be rules that situationally apply infrequently, and session-to-session you'll get very familiar with the rules that really pertain to your party.
It's kind of like reading a manual about all possible forms of motor racing, and then only going to see Formula 1 races.
What is the PHB?
Oh sorry, that's the common abbreviation for the Player Handbook.
you will also find it a lot easier if you start at level 1. Once you are experienced, it becomes very common to start at level 3, and that's fine too, but if you really want to ease in gently, at level 1 there usually won't be many divergent choices to make, so it keeps play nice and simple.
DMG = Dungeon Master's Guide
PHB = Player's Handbook
MM = Monster Manual
Hello, I've never touched dnd character creation before and after trying to create cleric I gave up. I was sitting on it for 4 hours trying to get it somewhere with no success. I have no idea how to get stuff in order and my DM is not the responsive type guy, so there isn't any much help. He invited me to join his campaign as lvl 6 something, but I'm already stuggling with base creation. I read the handbook, I tried to watch some videos as base to get going but still. How should I get it together as someone who wants to play some sort of spellcaster, either as heal/buff support or frontline magic thingy guy
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hD-LWHhiseE&list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN&index=1
you could sign up for DnD beyond and go through a guided char creation
online resources are great, i personally learn better in person. If that sounds familiar. reaching out to fellow players is a great idea. Whether or not they're in the campaign, they usually can help
I mean it's far better than to just sit while looking at some PDF knowing that you have to create something, that is already lvl6, while the only think you know is how confused you already are
Is there a specific part of character creation you were stuck at?
Mostly the spells and understanding majority of it. Since I want to use spells I tought cleric would be nice but with how complex they are I consider Warlock with hope to ease up on them
Warlocks are simpler in a few ways, and a little more complicated in others.
You don’t have to pick as many spells (which can be good or bad), but you do have to pick invocations.
yeah they can be tough
Question, can you be a clown or a jester in dnd? I'm new in dnd that's why.
All their spell slots are the same level, so you don’t need to spend time deciding which spell slot to use.
theres not really a limit to character theme if that's what you're asking
just talk with your DM about what makes sense
There are no clown/jester class in D&D. You can act like one if you want.
A bard could be used as a jester or a clown.
Bards are basically themed around performance, of one kind or another.
But you could fit a number of classes as one of those.
Warlock could be super cool, more dark for sure but demon jesters are sweet
What race would you choose for the warlock as absolute begginer
If you’re worried about complexity, human is the simplest option.
You'll want to have Charisma as your highest stat as a warlock. Otherwise, choose what interests you
Man as warhammer enjoyer i wanted to have some sort of nurgle theme, but well Slaneesh it is
As someone who’s never played Warhammer, I have no idea what any of that means.
Nurgle is like every plague, evere sickness, rotting alive in the name of his "gifts", while Slaneesh is like gonna make you enjoy everything, while brulaty torturing you (in her name you enjoy it at the same time)
Does rouge work for clown?
You might want to check out Circle of Spores Druid
Ditto spores for the grandfather nurgle vibe
Hello
Any class could work for a clown, just take the performer background and roleplay a clown character
Noticed! Thanks!
Hi!
For new players, i think it is useful to know that your class doesnt define your personality; it doesnt even necessarily define your role or job

Hello... My name is V and i wouls like to learn how to roleplay as paladin better. If anybody could gimme pointers id appreciate it:)
Happy to help, what's your character like?
A Paladin draws its power from their conviction - a belief or dedication to something. Traditionally it is a god, but really doesnt need to be. It can be a cause or ideal.
How strictly you play it is up to you
at one session we had a Paladin of Bread. The player brought croissaints for the table and his character fed the party and npcs
In one professional stream, an Oath of Redemption paladin just wanted to believe in the good of everyone, without pledging to any diety. He believed in his friends, family…and even tried to save folks nobody else wanted to (for better or worse. His conviction was beliving he, personally, could redeem anyone
Basically, pick a cause, thats your driving motivation

Hello! I always wanted to play D&D and did play once with my friend group, me being the dm and using a guide. Even tho my friend group really liked it, we can't play together anymore. I still want to play and learn more about it and was wondering, if there was a way to play online with people, like other people all over the world, looking to find people to play with, without having to meet in person
#looking-for-players or #750812887697588356 is prolly your best bet here
Great, thank you so much!
what's the time needed to weave 1 piece of cloth ?
The rules on using Weaver's Tools aren't specific on the time it takes to do anything. The general rule for crafting is that it's 1 day's work per 5gp of goods. By that metric, it would be a day's work to make 1 square yard of linen. Though I think this is probably going beyond Newcomer territory, so perhaps best to ask elsewhere if you have further questions
Hi! I want to start playing dnd but am completely clueless on how to start, does anyone have any tips?
from experience I'd say get a group to play with and that is willing to teach you
learning while playing is very effective
discuss the campaign and your char with a DM and go through guided char creation on ddb
maybe read through the base rules and then just start playing
if you don't understand something during the game the other players and the DM can help
cool, thanks 🙂 are there any ways to find a good group online?

You’d know three cantrips, as shown in the table there.
You’d also have 1st- and 2nd-level spell slots.
So you can prepare a number of 1st- and 2nd-level spells based on this:
You prepare the list of cleric spells that are available for you to cast, choosing from the cleric spell list. When you do so, choose a number of cleric spells equal to your Wisdom modifier + your cleric level (minimum of one spell). The spells must be of a level for which you have spell slots.
You can also change which levelled spells you’ve prepared any time you finish a long rest.
Can anyone add me and teach me the basics?

Hi
What issues are you having trouble understanding?
Hello everyone I've had my first dnd game still getting used to it but I want to thank everyone for their advice it was really fun
I have started my fist D&D campaign I am a rouge wood elf me and my group will have our first combat experience next week. Any advice on combat or rules I should know?
hello, I am completely new to the game and it's hard to understand the combat. Is there any forums or documents about this?
https://youtu.be/Uwimxo__n-I actions in combat
thanks, I appreciate it!
There’s a lot of other good videos on that channel too
Have you read the basic rules?
Also wouldnt hurt to go over your race, class and subclass features
As a rogue, get familiar with sneak attack, and what conditions let you use it. It's your bread and butter.
There’s a handy cheat sheet here, too:
https://media.wizards.com/2022/dnd/downloads/dnd_turn_ref_2022.pdf
Anyone understand lineages? My group started our next story and I’m planning on running a reborn artificer, I understand origins and the traits but after that I’m lost
Can you be a bit more specific? If you understand the traits, what else is there?
So how do lineages work, is it just another fancy name for race or is there something else I’m missing?
It serves the same function as a race, yeah.
if magic missile automatically touches the target, do you need to see them for it to hit ?
It just includes additional rules (in the Ancestral Legacy trait) to account for someone becoming one of these legacies during their game (in place of their original race).
being blinded for an example
Each dart hits a creature of your choice that you can see within range.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/magic-missile
If a spell requires sight, it will always say so in the spell itself.
isn't it implicit ?
No
Hello
is there anyone looking for a player for there campain
Same
Look through the posts in #looking-for-players.
The general rule is simply that you need a clear path to the target.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/spellcasting#AClearPathtotheTarget
So if a specific spell requires sight, it will say so specifically.
I’d wager most spells that target a chosen creature do require sight, but not all of them do.
Hi I’m using https://dndstore.wizards.com to buy starter kits and what not, but im just wondering if they’re trusted or not
U mean the company that publishes the game?
Are you referring to the legitimacy of the product or some payment issue?
You'll be buying it directly from Wizards of the Coast, the publisher of D&D.
(As for them being trustworthy that's a different thing we won't discuss here...)

I see thank you
I’m looking for dnd friends 18^

Hello I am new! I am hard of hearing and would love to create a character that is HOH or deaf any thoughts or feedback on that? Suggestions?
Honestly, that’s probably a question best discussed with your DM.
There aren’t really official rules that cover that scenario.
There is the Deafened condition:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/appendix-a-conditions#Deafened
there might be a potion for that
But even a low-level spell like Lesser Restoration can remove that condition.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/lesser-restoration
There’s also a common magic item called the Ear Horn of Hearing that suppresses the condition.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/magic-items/27046-ear-horn-of-hearing
But again, if you want to make it something meaningful in the game, then discussing it with your DM is the way to go.
Oh, there’s also the Observant feat, which includes this:
If you can see a creature's mouth while it is speaking a language you understand, you can interpret what it's saying by reading its lips.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/feats/observant
random people dont have time to teach you, check the pins
Me and a few others are learning
@burnt magnet add me, i'm new and my friend's new and we have one friend walking us through our first game soon.
@smoky adder thx for the info!! I don't have a DM yet... still looking for a group to play with. I was just asking in general to get some thoughts and ideas on if it was something that could be done. Instead of this condition what if it is a something the character was born with? I would like it to be somewhat meaningful and not "an easy fix"
At some point you do need to sit down and read or at least watch the videos in the pinned posts
well what they meant is that the condition deafened is all that exists for deafness, you could just say its permanent
or only removable with the wish spell
@fleet field oooh I see. Thank you for that!
Yeah, I was just pointing out every existing thing I could think of — which isn’t much. 😅
But with the right DM, hopefully you can take that and turn it into something meaningful.
@smoky adder No I appreciate it all! Like I said I am very very new to this whole game lol still trying to learn the ins and outs
Oh! Thought of one more!
The playtest for next year’s updated Player’s Handbook included Common Sign Language as an available language.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/ua/character-origins
So if a player was asking this of me as a DM:
- We’d permanently apply the Deafened condition.
- We’d include both Common Sign Language and that lip reading ability (or potentially the Observant feat in its entirety).
- We’d alter any game effects that normally remove or suppress that condition and have them ignore it for this character, to whatever extent the player desired.
Hey were can I ask for a group to play with?
Welcome! #find-a-game can get you started there.
@smoky adder ooooh you sound like a great DM! I will have to read that handbook when it comes out next year! Thanks again!
how do I join a game lobby with this dnd beyond? I cant see any server lists or anything anywhere
and belieeeve me ive been searching the website :/
Not how it works
You need to find a group to play with using other platforms
We have channels here for that
I dont get it? Isn't DnD beyond a Game framework for hosting games of 5e?
beyond is a set of digital tools for d&d 5e. Not a game framework
Think of it as a big online rulebook/library of all the info you need to play
Now im really confused. So, how does it make running games easier? Everyone is telling me to use DnD Beyond to play this online (im trying to find people to play with because IRL sucks when your the only one with books)
You'll need to go and find people to play with yourself
Well you can use D&D beyond to play in person as well if you have any devices
But there's websites like roll20 to find people to play with
it makes things easier as it is a set of digital tools.
:/ so how do I play this online with people if its just PDFs
things like a character creator, campaign manager, encounter builder.
I mean, D&D is essentially just shared imagination at its core
ik this, but I was told this is the way to play the game online with others and theres like, no game lists or anything available. tis abit confusing
It helps with running games online by providing a character sheet created that allows you to easily share your character sheet
I found this link confusing because its telling me to go to its competition like roll20 and fantasy grounds etc.
It's a good way to replicate the pen and paper/book focused approach that most people use with in-person games, because the DM can share the content they have purchased with any players in their campaign through D&D beyond
dnd beyond is I'm and of itself not a game hosting platform. You can try the forums there, the looking for channels here, or use the multiple vtt options
So it's like everyone has access to the Monster Manual if you own it, for example
Roll20 isn’t competing with dnd beyond they do different things
Roll20 is mainly just a vtt
But you have to buy the books digitally there to use it as well.
NNo
You can share books between roll20 and ddb
Not technically (as that's a third party app to do so)
Roll20, Fantasy Grounds, Foundry VTT, and owlbear.rodeo are all virtual tabletops (VTTs).
You can connect your D&D Beyond account / character sheets with Roll20 and Foundry via the browser extension Beyond20
So, how do I get my IRL books onto these platforms? Serial no or something?
There isn't a way.
You don't
The closest way is to buy the physical and digital bundle directly from Wizards of the Coast.
:/ so this isn't a way for me to play online then without investing more money in books I already own
Yup.
you can 100% play online with all your irl books
I mean, realistically what books do most players even need access to?
PhB and maybe some expansion stuff for characters?
you don't need to buy into any of the ecosystems. Roll20 has a free option and owlbear.owlbear.rodeo is all free
I've doubled dipped — I've bought most of the 5E physical books for over Cdn$1000 then I rebought some of the digital books on D&D Beyond.
idk, I havent played a 5e game IRL yet. Cant find any games where I live
Also you can buy individual subclasses on ddb
hence why im wanting to try on here lol
just because you double dipped doesn't mean it's a necessity
Well if you’re just a player some DMs will share the books they own with you
like roll20 has a character creator in which you type it all in.....
Don't worry too much then - if you want to find a game to play, websites like Roll20 (or other VTTs) have a "Find a Game" feature where you can find people hosting a game. You'll only really have to worry about the books you need to create your character there
If you want to be a DM, then your players don't need access to most of your books, so having them physically makes no difference
you don't need to purchase anything to play online, much like in irl you can play d&d just fine without putting any money into it
I literally just wanna play some 5e. I bought the starter book set a few months back and yeah cant find anyone to play with
That too
If you play online and the DM uses D&D Beyond they'll probably share their digital content (I do with my players)
so.. D&D Beyond is.. pretty much, a PDF library that you can link to other virtual tabletop services but also allows you to use the Library in physical games as well via smartphone/laptop/tablet?
am I getting that right?
no. You can purchase books and content for their character creator and digital sheet manager. It also has a campaign manager and encounter builder
D&D Beyond is a tool for character sheets and digital books for 5E D&D.
it's a set of digital tools for 55e
so how do I link my D&D Beyond to roll20 (I heard this is the best one)
Use the browser extension (for Chrome and Firefox), Beyond20.
It's a third party extension called beyond 20 but be warned that neither roll20 or d&d beyond can help with any issues with it as it is a 3rd party exextension
sigh roll20 keeps sending me around in circles. Is there no way on roll20 to create a 5e character without D&D beyond? Or should I make a character on D&D Beyond first and then use that app to use it on roll20
Roll20's character creation is linked to the games themselves, I think, so you would need to be a member of a game to import/create your character there (though you can export them once created). If you want to create a character now without being part of a game, use D&D Beyond
if you want to use your irl books and not have to pay, I suggest using the roll20 tutorials to learn how to use it so you can just type everything in
Though I think you will be limited to only the content in the Player's Handbook (the "base" D&D character creation options).
you still need to pay for the phb. You are listed to the free basic rules
whack
not really.
would be real smack in the face to anyone who bought the phb and then offer the same product for free online
free basic rules have always been free though
I've played D&D for 8 years, I don't think I ever bought the PhB 🤔
Anyway, if you have the physical starter set, you can just use that
It might even be more interesting to just make a character without the automated tool at first, or when you find a game I'm sure the DM will be happy to help
Alright I'll create a character with the options the free account provides and see how I go.
ive been playing BG3 so I have some idea on what works and what doesnt and also have been playing PF1e IRL as it seems to be easier to find PF games in my city
Interesting
Well pf1e was a fork of dnd 3.5e so you should have a decent grasp of things
I don't think I've ever even met anyone IRL who's played PF lol
local groups are all 5e
I’m really wanting to try pf2e
fyi BG3 is a homebrewed version of 5e and may not be the best choice of trying to learn 5e rules
I would recommend playing Solasta: Crown of Magister. It's closer to 5E RAW than BG3 is.
I own a few PF2e books as well, but again, players hard to find, let alone a game for ME to play in. Sigh
it's not rocket science either way honestly, learn the basic mechanics and a willing DM will get you through the more complicated bits in the first few sessions
Better to get playing and ask for help on the stuff you don't understand
Interesting that pf1e is more common where you are than dnd 5e and pf2e
I mean, I just want to create my tanky Halfling that people will confuse for a walking Tower Shield as they wont see whos behind it
That sounds awesome
that's already 20x better than my first character brother, it's a good start
Same
My first ttrpg character is the one im playing in PF atm, a Gnome. Its an evil campaign as well and I kinda turned into chaotic evil
tower shields only exist as flavor in 5e. All it will do is give you +2 ac like all the other shields - maybe your dm will give you cover if they are nice but don't expect it
5E simplified the weapons and armour compared to earlier editions (including PF, which was derivative of 3.5E) for the sake of ease of play.
Its amazing what sneak attack versus prone and flatfooted AC can do when the NPCs underestimate you based on size
Also. Being small lets you hide in the privy. Allowing advantage for a sneak attack
not in 5e
mmm well my Gnome isnt a good kind sort
Worshipping a false deity as well. Carrying a skull around called Kellog the Crunchy Demon
Crazy Crazy gnome.
hahaha
if your gonna talk pathfinder - we have #non-dnd-topics
uhh hey guys
lol good point im confusing myself. Anyway im gonna try make this character on D&D beyond im envisioning
but yeah, one thing to note which ties in nicely to what the other guys have been saying - you'll find DMs tend towards different approaches in their games, so sometimes your concepts won't work out as you'd hope
For example, I lean toward treating the rulebooks are guidelines - if I need to change something to help a character concept along, I will, but I'll slap disadvantages onto that change as well
Theres no player race for Ogres are there? Or Half Ogres? in 5e?
no
Others are much more focused on sticking to the rules
hi o/
Hmm, alright, thanks for the help guys. Appreciated
Not in official materials, but again, some DMs would accept a homebrewed concept if it fits with the setting, their DM style and the overall game - see something like this: https://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/Half-Ogre_(5e_Race)
Though usually with changes from the suggestion if they think anything is inappropriately balanced
i would hesitate to suggest homebrew in this channel
it only serves to add more confusion for those beginning to learn the game
Eh, my first campaign was entirely homebrewed and I worked it out, but agreed that it's likely best to go with something out of the official books for your first game(s)
Homebrewed, especially from online sites like that, are notoriously imbalanced.
cool for you, but homebrew is table specific and not helpful in a channel for helping players get started with the game who most likely don't have a table yet
I’m surprised that site isn’t banned here
I've seen some wild suggestions from it that I refused to even consider, but sometimes the odd half-decent idea has surfaced that can be made workable with some adjustments
Doesn’t it have official material on it?
Oh, I don't know, maybe
I believe it is considered acceptable because it only hosts the SRD material, and no copyright material. However, it's irritatingly likely to come up in searches with low-quality homebrew.
After discussions with the team, we’ve now provisionally allowed links to dandwiki. For the time being, we’ll be monitoring any links shared here to ensure they’re still permissible under the server rules.

ok
ngl i been lookin for a camaign fo 6 hours and havent got a yes from one
6 hours is not a long time
I'm going to be honest but you may be looking for days, if not weeks, before you find a game.
i guess i got lucky my first campaign
There are way more players than DMs so the openings are few and get filled very quickly.
yeah dming is exhausting
And the nature of many applications means applying, then waiting for the DM to get back, chatting with the DM to see if you're a good fit, and then maybe still waiting weeks till the game as you and the group chat and make characters together
the last part is kinda fun though
Finding a good group is like dating or job hunting..
good comparison
Well, thank God I'm a married "forever DM" because I hate looking for games and dating.
lol

Choose one or the other
The idea with choosing gold is that you can then spend the gold on equipment straight away
Thanks

Hello I nedd bit help with magic slots as 6th lvl warlock. On 6th lvl I would have:
3 cantrips
7 spells of choice from 1st to 3rd spell lvl
and on each spell lvl two slots to use
ATM I don't take in the dark invocation (I suppose thats how to translate it)
Am I right or is there something I'm missing?
On lvl up you learn one new spell that can be from 1st to 3rd lvl and you can swap out a spell know for a new one
yes, and on each spell level I have only 2 slots?
No your spell are all cast at 3rd lvl
Warlocks have limited spell slots compared to any other caster but they refresh on a short rest. Additionally warlocks cast their leveled spells at the highest level of their available spell slots.
https://youtu.be/oH-4Lkx8xsA good warlock guide
that means i can only cast (between short rest) only 2 spless
2 leveled spells. You can cast unlimited cantrips.
Yes and spell from your invocations
Like armour of shadows means you can cast mage armour at will for free
Hi, I was wondering what class is the best for a long range weapon(bow, crossbow, etc) user? Initially I was thinking Ranger but it's always better to have a second opinion
The other strong option is Fighter. Arcane Archer or Battlemaster can both really excell with a Bow.
What's the best weapon for a rogue? Daggers or rapiers
That depends on your play style, really. Rapier is better for a duelist style aimed at keeping its bonus action reserved for Cunning Action. Daggers are often used as a pair for two weapon fighting which gives more chances to land a sneak attack but does use up your bonus action. The third choice is to fight at range which works just as well for a Rogue
Since me and my friends are doing a duel centered dnd I shall go with rapier, thanks for the help!
Is there a mon that uses an enlarged ranged weapon that we can loot? party of 3 lvl 3s but one is a giant ranger that has no weapons that fits
Ettin came to mind, but only melee drops. Might try to find rocks to throw?
Why has the DM not given a player any weapons, tell them to just use a longbow stats and it’s a big bow
hello , ive never played DnD before so can someone explain some mechanics for me?
I'm sure we can help a bit.. what mechanics are you curious about?
prety much how the cheking for traps and npc encounters work
and character lvl up
and whats homebrew?
Pretty sure it's like modding Minecraft like adding new things that aren't in the main stuff of DND basically adding changes or new items or new races or classes to keep it good since there is so much DND you could play before you get bored
so homebrewing is basiclly mods
I might be wrong you could search it on YouTube I suggest steelysam explanation
btw where do i submit my character??
Homebrew is content for dnd that's unofficial made by other players or dms (or yourself!) not wizards of the coast.
that still leaves me with 3 questions
which are
Checking for traps is perception or investigation, npc encounters are... pretty straightforward?
wdym vy how npc encounters work
to your dungeon master
yes, it will be played by the dm
alr
Roleplay how ur character wojld talk to them
i really need a campaing to test out the game
look for a dm ig
Characters level up when they either:
- hit milestones (certain set accomplishments/complete a questline etc)in the campaign
- accumulate enough experience to level as per the rules
Or - if the DM deems that they gain a level
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#CharacterAdvancement

Hi I'm interested in playing DND, I'm a beginner, can anyone guide me how to play it? thank you
Have you read the free basic rules?
will read now
No problem just shoot me a ping
just wanted to sayone funny story
one time when i was playing DnD, the DM told me that if i was fighting a monster and i roled a nat 20 it was an instant kill. so my friends roled a nat 20!
Could someone take a look at my oneshot campaign in #dm-discussion ;w; Its my first time making one so id love some feedback!
nice one! made my day after reading that 😄
are deities spells from clerics just spells that don't count against the number of prepared spells ?
i don't remember
Domain spells are always prepared and don’t count against the number you can prepare that day
okay thanks
also
i currently have an AT Rogue/Wizard
do I have the spells that I have with my AT subclass prepared ?
Or do I have to prepare them with my wizard class ?
wait that's kinda dumb
nvm
Good Morning!
Morning!
😁 I just joined the Discord today, I look forward to hanging out with you all
Welcome!
omg, I spent almost 2 months on a artificer 2/Wizard 4 build before realizing I have access to the entire artificer spell list
This is why dnd is so great, you literally always learn something new
Thank you,
I look forward to finding a game that I can play with other people
very true
That's odd it would seem the Discord deleted my statement
Anyways, as I was saying I haven't really played since I was a teenager and I'm an adult now with the exception of a campaign I was playing with my brother and his friends.
Unfortunately I had to take a leave from that campaign due to a new work schedule
(If your message had stated something explicitly about your age, the bot might have deleted it as they goes against the rules, might have been what happened)
Ahhh
i haven't played since covid, anyone able to help find a one shot so i can get back into it. i only played about 4 times so im still new
Online or IRL
online would be much easier
#find-a-game has all the details
tried that, i guess ill just have to wait for a response
You can also look on roll20 Facebook Reddit and other dnd discords, spread your next wide
I'll definitely have to consider looking into Roll20 as well
It can take a while to find a game
thanks
I’ve never played DND before 😭 but I’m interested in trying it out, where do I start?

Quick question... if you buy the virtual books on the Wizards website, did they announce what's going to happen to them when the new edition comes out? The 40% sale they're running looks pretty good...
I've never bought virtual books before, always hard copies...
They tend to be private...
Perhaps check #find-a-game if you want to find a table to join?
it's said that a paladin or a cleric can use a holy symbol as a focus for their spells but I don't understand if it's only for paladins/cleric spells or any other spells granted you've multiclassed into another spellcasting class
Theyre not gonna cut into their present sales by announcing more sales in the future
Holy symbols are for paladin and cleric casting divine spells.
Arcane foci are for arcane spellcasters (sorcerers, warlocks, and wizards).
The type of focus depends on the type of magic being cast.
A cleric/wizard can't cast their wizard spells with a holy symbol.
okay thabks for the clarification
WotC has not stated what will happen with the current 5E digital books when the 2024 5E stuff comes out.
Also, a lot of half casters don't have a specific spell focus type. For those classes, such as Ranger, they would use the Component Pouch.
but if as a sorcerer, I take a spell that a cleric could know, can I, in this case, use the holy symbol to cast it?
No
Any spell you learn as a sorcerer is considered a sorcerer spell.
If you want to cast it as a cleric spell, you have to prepare it as a cleric.
okay
Can anyone help me here, I'm a sorta new player and my only group pretty much disbanded and I wanna keep playing but I have very little game knowledge and don't know how to find a group

Hello
Ahoy! Welcome 🙂
This server is really big lol
Hah yeah, not small! But it doesn't move too fast. Definitely been in more chaotically rapid ones.
Thanks. That’s what I was looking for before buying one of those big bundles…
Hey can someone help me build a character later that’s just a regular old grandma?
Choose a:
- playable race
- class
- background
- roll your ability scores (or use Standard Array/Point Buy)
- ability skills
Nice
Okay so she’s gonna be human, class I have no clue, background:She’s your sweet baker down the street of a town called shapin, I don’t know how to do the last two but I do want her to have a huge knowledge of history since she’s old lol
Bard cause all grans have vicious mockery
You can make a custom background that give you the History skill.
I feel like the only way she would actually fight is by handing a enemy a bad cookie, sing them a lullaby, or just give them a hug
That’s a good Idea thank you
For the last two how do I do that?
Roll, use Stand Array, or Point Buy (ask your DM)
Ability skills would be based on your class and/or background.
Okay cool thank you
https://ddb.ac/characters/104455246/NIhkSb you should end up with something like this
A granny who can cook make gin and whose words cut to the bone or put you to sleep
The rapier is just a big knitting needle or hidden inside her cane
Omg I love it
As a player are you required to read the rules?
Yes
It is expected you have an understanding of the basics and highly encouraged so that gameplay is not brought to a grinding halt from a player attempting to do something only to be told "you're not able to do that" followed by having to explain why they are unable to do something. It also helps with understanding what your class, spells, and features are capable of so that you can utilize them properly (and later fully through clever gameplay)
That said, you're not expected to have memorized the rules cover-to-cover. That is why any player tries to keep the PHB onhand physically or digitally so they may check against it when they are uncertain of something
Bear in mind, a lot of the rules won't apply to your character. You don't need to know the ins-and-outs of Druid spellcasting if you are a rogue: but you should know the specifics of how Sneak Attack works.
I’m really new to DnD, how many books in total would I need to understand all I’d need to be a good player? And what are they?
The Basic Rules have everything you need to know.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
Though additional books can expand the number of character options you have available.
Thanks!
As a player, these books would get you the most bang for your buck with character options.
- Player’s Handbook
- Xanathar’s Guide to Everything
- Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything
- Monsters of the Multiverse
Welcome everyone

In the same boat as you buddy I put a request in the "find a game" section
oh thanks
@ocean zealot @torpid eagle good luck
What would a good class be for beginners? I looked at rouge and it looked intresting but everything I saw of people using them seemed a little too edgy for me
fighter is cool for beginners
Sounds good, I'll check it out
in general, I think martial classes are easier to understand than spellcasting classes
Probaly, I'm completely new so I'll just go for something simple
You don’t have to be edgy to be a rogue.
If you think it sounds fun, go for it. Put your own spin on it.
I mean obviously but most of what I saw of people playing them seemed like it was the default option, and while I don't mind playing with others who do that, it's just not the kind of character I think I would enjoy playing
And I don't really know enough about the game yet to be confident to put a creative spin on it
The edginess is a creative spin. Naturally classes attract certain personas more than others. A Paladin is not inherently a goody-good, a barbarian is not inherently a muscle-head, etc. Any class you play is simply what you decide it to be. Common styles does not dictate the theme to any class though
Of course, and while I want to create an intresting charcter because obviously that's the most fun for everybody who would play, I just don't quite feel confidant doing it with a rouge because of the inherent feel of the class
I know I probaly sound stupid, I'm just very new
If not edgy, then what kind of character are you looking for?
I'm not entirely sure, I mostly play tankier characters in games so probaly something to that effect
Perfectly fine if that is how you feel. More of wanting to assure you no class has a predetermined notion to it. If you as a player interpret a class a certain way from how you read it, that is fair enough
I mean I've never done this before, I'm probaly way overthinking this
I just thought d and d looked cool
Possibly. The key is to have fun with it. There is a great deal of room for you as a player to play a character of your making with it being something unique based on what you pour into it
I’d argue that “tanky” isn’t really a personality; it’s more of a mechanical role.
I've been playing for...a little over a month and still..don't understand certain things. I also wanna play more games of d&d maybe with different people so I get a different/better experience and understanding?
What’s one thing you still want to better understand?
Yeah your entirely right, I'm not entirely sure of what I want to do but I suppose that's just part of going in pretty blind
I'm sure I should probaly just make something to get it over with but I don't want to make something low effort and ruin it for anyone else I'd play with
you can go in #find-a-game for that
and feel free to ask anything you don't understand here
Would a cleric be more of a healing class? Or atleast the thing that's most adjacent to one
They can be, depending on the subclass you choose.
Life Cleric is basically the healer.
I think I'll try that then, thank you so much
But they’re far from the only ones that can fill that role.
I'll just look over all the classed again, it couldn't hurt
Clerics are very diverse depending on subclass and spell selection. But they are overall the best typically suited to a healing role. Even the most war-hardy subclasses id expect to have some healing or defensive spells ready.
Idk I just feel kinda overwhelmed with how much their is
I'm sure I'll enjoy d n d once I finally get started with it but it just feels like theirs so much to get started
Just take it a step at a time. Learn the basics, watch guides that cover those basics, try tinkering with making characters, and look for games for newcomers that will help out along the way. Beyond that, do not hesitate to ask questions.
Thank you, I'll probaly try and look for a game for beginners when I start looking in the looking for players thing
Honestly, if you haven’t found a group yet, what I’d suggest is just coming up with a few loose ideas for characters. Then you can work with the DM to decide which fits best for the campaign and finalize all the remaining details.
Could I get some help with like....character sheets and the like?

What kind of help were you looking for, specifically?
Wouldn't it be annoying to a dm for me to not have a charcter yet though? I don't want to bother anybody
I think I'm gonna make a character on D&D-Beyond and maybe see if I can find a group to run with
Many DMs and groups prefer to create the characters together so it best fits the game/campaign.
I suppose that makes sense but how do I know if a dm wants that? The looking for players never really specify that
You talk with the DM and group
Like....I've got two characters but I made them through the 5e companion app but I wanna flesh them out? I guess...? If that makes sense?
Yknow maybe I am stupid if I didn't think of that
Thank you though, I'll give it a shot
As a dm it honestly bothers me more if someone shows up with their character concept already committed with a character sheet before I’ve even spoken to them.
It tells me “I don’t care about your game. I just want a stage for my character.”
It’s not a great feeling.
That makes sense, I didn't think about it like that
Don’t be afraid to experiment with making different characters, but just hold off on having one “ready” to go until after you’ve talked to your DM and know what kind of table you’re playing at.
No worries - but it’s good to keep in mind that D&D is a collaborative story-telling RPG game and works best when everyone is on the same page about expectations and boundaries for the kind of D&D game that everyone wants to play.
Yeah, so a few loose ideas is good. It shows that a player has ideas but is still willing to collaborate.
A player that comes in with a very fixed idea — “my character is a dragon slayer” — may be hard to accommodate if the campaign I planned had nothing to do with dragons.
And a player who comes in without even a general idea of the what options are available will obviously need more of a guiding hand before they can start playing. That means I’ve got my work cut out for me.
Hey, i am looking to host my first DM attempt as a oneshot. have any recommendations of a session/world/story to do?
I have been very interested in DMing for a while and really want to try it out before DMing for my little brothers because I want them to have a good first experience :D
Winghorn Press has a bunch, as does Midnight Tower. Also check out The Delian Tomb.
What's a good website for buying into D&D campaigns?
DMsGuild? I say that without knowing the specifics of what you’re looking for.
Hi, I’m a new first timer, never done a campaign, but looking to learn and get into things. I have a character made and would love to get into my first campaign sometime soon.
Same but I don't have a character made
I used the D&D Beyond app to make one, made the process very easy.
Read through #find-a-game for instructions on using the Looking for Game/Group channels here.
hi i am new
Same ngl
Welcome to the server. Do you have particular questions?
Nope
I’ll probably just go into #find-a-game and look for a game
On one hand I wanna learn how to play the game better but on the other hand I don’t wanna make anyone else’s playthroughs worse by me being bad
On one hand I suck but I have fun
I’ve heard stories from my friends who play dnd that they had to stop campaigns because of someone who’s new and like I just don’t wanna make anyone else’s day worse
So on the one hand, there are enough resources to learn the game that you have plenty of opportunity to know the basics before joining a game. Also, if you’re transparent with the group about your level of knowledge, you’ll find groups that will be happy to have you (rather than ones who would not want to have a newbie in tow).
I know the basics and how to play, I just can’t build a character for anything
We have two channels, #character-discussion and #optimization, to help with characters specifically.
I wanna make a character who is terrible at charisma but is just threatening
And does big bonk
Sounds like a barbarian or fighter, but it could be anything, really.
Hiya

Hi
Hi
D&D beyond is a great tool for character building. It's the only one that explains it extremely well for me, while I am building my character
I’m looking to run a new character and am relatively new to the game and only have D&D beyond
I have played a couple campaigns but not many
Hi I’m new, just getting into D&D cause of baldurs gate! I’m meg 🤝
Who do you play campaigns with? In person or online?
Im also hella new to dnd - as in never played “pnp”
Grew up on bg1/2, ddo, and now bg3 as well as solasta etc
Figured id use bg3 releasing to try and break into “pnp” dnd, since I love RPGs but always find the options restrictive - esp in modern rpgs :3
Hello all!
Yeah I love how un-restrictive TTRPGs can be relative to RPGs. I thought I would be right at home with BG3, but comparing it to D&D it really fells like a walled garden to me now.
Yeah thats fair
Comparing it to other rpgs it feels hella nice, but there is always a “oh I cant do X okay”
Also, npcs will never live up to PCs :p

I have yeah!
Im very much one of the “wanted to play dnd for years but never got to it” people
In 3.5e I made a char with my then-bf but alas we never played
And again in 5e, by myself and looked into DA RULEZ etc
I havent made a character however; I dont wanna make a half orc barbarian and end up in a campaign where orcs… Do not exist :p
I think a lot of people who end up playing are that way: the first challenge of DnD is always getting a group, and then the final boss is scheduling
Well, you'll probably have fun and learn a bit extra if you make 3 different characters, and then one is bound to fit.
Yknow thats fair
I was thinking of making my first char for whatever campaign a fighter/barbarian; I do usually RP mages or casters but feel like I may get system overload from the magic systems etc :p
Could go warlock I guess
Hmm
Quick Question:
I haven't played D&D in about 8 years and I want to run by a backround/character quirk idea past some DM's. My character is going to be a Firbolg Cleric, there was a battle on a mountain (yet to be decided) about land between dwarf and firbolg decades ago and was orphaned to be raised by an old Dwarven couple. Due to this, one of my characters quirks will be racism towards certain groups, not beligerant more as if he is addressing a friend by a nickname. Would you allow this?
ask your dm and players, thats the easiest way
Bit out of scope for here. This channel is very much for the basics
Also topics about discrimination are very much a "check in with your table" topic, and not really an "ask in a public space" topic
hey im new and i want to play a campaign

Do you see the embedded message?
About checking #find-a-game to learn how to find a game and use our #looking-for channels.
i did that
Then that’s how you find games here on this server. Posting that you’re looking for a game anywhere else but the approved channels is off topic.
I’d also suggest checking out games on Roll20, Demiplane, and even check your local comic book/game stores as they may have D&D games you can join.
Hi, I would love so me online restorers...
You're going to have to rephrase your...question (?) as it doesn't make sense
Sorry, I would love to know some free online resources for d and d printable files.
I think #dnd-minis may have info pinned for places to find models?
What do you mean by 'printable files'? PDFs? Minis? Terrain? Maps?
I would like to print charters sheets and spell list
For character sheets: https://dnd.wizards.com/resources/character-sheets
For spell lists, that would involve printing out the basic rules which would be a lot
I hope that makes sences
You can just look them up on D&D Beyond: https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells
That moment when you roll the dice and feel blessed on D&D Beyond
so ah what do I do to get started in d&d

ok thank you
Does zero session for one shot make sense or not necessarily?
Makes even more sense bc there is less time to adjust, esp if characters start at higher lvl
There's no reason not to have one, even if it's much more brief
But this would certainly be more of a #dm-discussion topic
Is it okay to copy paste my question then? And thanks
Sure
I was pinged 👀
Dunno

Can 2 new players play 1on1?
Sure, as long as one of them is a DM. That style of play is called a "duet".
They can, but that would be an atypical sort of play.
I think I'm gonna take some extensive time to learn DMing
Unorthodox, but possibly! It'd probably require some pretty experienced people
It doesn't need to be extensive if you and your group are all committed to learning together as play proceeds.
Can you ply dnd by yourself
I've never been a DM before so I want to take the time to study and create my own Master Campaign and Sub Campaigns
The game isn't designed for it, but you definitely can. Check out Ginny Di's Solo D&D video on YouTube for a good primer.
Fair. My suggestion is not to worry about feeling 100% prepared because you likely never will. Learn enough so you feel a modicum of confidence and get started playing. Too many others think everything needs to be worked out ahead of time, and they never get around to starting a game.
Totally understandable
I think I mostly want to learn and understand the responsibility of being a DM such as construction of the Campaign and Arcs, ensuring a fair system and such
That's also not definitive other than the bare minimums of arbitrating player decisions' outcomes
Helps just to jump in and start while you're doing your learning on off days too
Im not going to construct any campaigns, and I'm avoiding any world building outside of what the players want to do, which I can't build until I know what they want.

I already. Ow how to play I just can’t figure out how to make a bard
Where are you getting stuck?
Umm that's under Where do I start?
I am still a new person
I think all players will have a stable of characters before they start a game 😄
Yah
I'm still looking for a game lmao
What game
Also how do you play dnd on discord
Like what servers actually play
DND
Some servers have like a group community. Sometimes these are called "West Marches" but it can have other names. Folks break out into different VCs (usually) to play.
Some folks play via group DM. And other folks will create their own private servers if they need extra channels etc.
Hi
Hi
I'm new
Kinda both
Me to
I used discord for a month now
I’ve pleaded dnd but only a few times when I was like 8
But now I’m getting back into it
Did you read the free Basic Rules?
Me
I found DND in YouTube and I did research on how to play
I kinda read the books
Ok
O

Im looking for a pro to ask a question
Can I interest you in a cabal of self-appointed experts instead? 😄
Ask your question here. That's the point of this channel.
There are no wrong or dumb questions, this is what we're here for
How many actions can I get in dnd 5e
Each turn you get one action, one bonus action, one reaction and one object interaction. Class features and spell effects may provide extra actions which may or may not have conditions.
On your turn, you can move a distance up to your speed and take one action.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#YourTurn
Various class features, spells, and other abilities let you take an additional action on your turn called a bonus action. The Cunning Action feature, for example, allows a rogue to take a bonus action. You can take a bonus action only when a special ability, spell, or other feature of the game states that you can do something as a bonus action. You otherwise don't have a bonus action to take.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#BonusActions
I mean what spells and features give me more Actions
The Haste spell gives you one extra action
Only fighter's Action Surge gives you an extra Action.
As well as the Action Surge ability
Getting more actions is pretty limited, because of how strong it is. There's a few options as seen above
But the extra action from the Haste spell has limited use
