You need to buy the books on D&D Beyond if that's where you're looking.
Or the races themselves.
Anything in the Basic Rules can be used by default. Think of it as the demo version.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
The latest version of Shifter can be found here.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/marketplace/sourcebooks/mordenkainen-presents-monsters-of-the-multiverse
You need to either buy the books to unlock them or buy the individual playable classs, race, etc (for about $2 each).
You can get just that race alone if that’s all you want. Whatever you spend gets credited toward the cost of the book itself, too.
Bard is part of the Basic Rules for free.
Bard the class is already available in the Basic Rules.
The College of Lore subclass for bards is also available in the Basic Rules.
If you wanted another subclass, the same discussion above applies.
Or if you wanted more spells or anything, beyond what’s in the Basic Rules.

im new here, where would i ask for feedback about a riddle i made for a campaign?
I'm assuming you're a DM. Check out #dm-discussion perhaps?
ok, thx!
is it worth it getting cool dice? (under 20 dollars)
Only you can truly answer if it's worth it to you
Hi all, I'm new here, been a fan of DND for awhile now, the name is Jesse or Jess
Hello
No one can speak to the monetary value except you, since thats personal
However
There are practical concerns
Are the numbers legible?
Will the dice endure hitting the table? You should get a dice tray
The fancy dice inevitably come in a set , one of each side. In an actual game, you actually need more than that. Some classes will never need a d12 or d100. Almost everyone could use multiple d6/d8/d10. Two d20s for advantage/disadvantage is also useful.
there's d100s!?!?!?
There are literal d100’s too, though.
Yeah, that too. But the set it comes in is usually just a d10
im here
boring
To get a d100 result, if you don't have an actual 100 sided die (which do exist) you can take two d10 and designate one as the tens and one as the ones, so you'd roll a 5 and a 2, and get 52. Some d10s make this easier, by having a 0 after the number normally on the d10. So you can easily roll it and a normal d10, and get for example a 30 and a 4, and get 34
Bro, I just looked it up and d100s are like golf balls.
Yup! They also often have sand inside them, to stop them from rolling forever
Physics! We use it for dice but not DND!
Hi everyone!
what do people mean when its a one shot?
hey hey folks how's it hanging
one shots are (almost generally) campaigns that are finished in a single session of play. Their size is enough for an adventure, like a quest, without a long-ended campaign or narrative that would require multiple sessions to complete
ok ty
Hello friends, I am VERY new to DnD, anybody else here live in Florida? Finding friends would be pretty cool
Given there’s 150k people in this server I would be very surprised if there was no one else from Florida here
If you're looking to meet people to play in-person I'd highly recommend googling for Adventurers League or open-play events at your local game stores and librarys
Check out local Facebook D&D pages in your area.
@glass summit @cobalt frigate thank you! I'll give them a look

You can use that channel in the bot post above to look for online games starting up, that are organised on this discord
Otherwise you can look in all the various places that LFG (looking for group) posts are made, such as facebook and reddit
You'd do well to look in multiple places at once, as finding a game is the hardest part of playing D&D (but certainly worth the effort)
I'm gonna be real honest, unless you have a group of people ready to go all into learning the game together right now, the chances you are gonna be in a game right away is fairly low. Take the time in between your search for games and learn small parts of the system, like how to make a character, or how things like combat work.

Most of the learning ime is done at the table, I've had plenty of people join my local Adventurers League that never opened the basic rules before arriving. It just takes a little longer for them to grasp the game than those that do
I want to do a game for newcomers. Should I have pregens ready to go or shod we create characters write off the bat
complete noobs?
have they made chars b4?
this is mbe more of a #dm-discussion convo as well
No they are completely new. Saw me flipping thru a book at LGS and approached me yesterday and now I have a new party
Can I, as a wizard, have my mage hand holding my spellbook ?
More of a #dnd-rules question but as long as it fits what a mage hand can do/hold, then yes. Remember mage hand only lasts a minute.
I have an ancient relic that allows me to break the time limit of my cantrips
(it's a legendary item)
so it's all good
That's way outside of normal D&D rules and wasn't part of the intitial question but okay.
Why would you need your mage hand to hold your spell book?
to use my 2 hands ?
you need to hold your book in one hand to be able to cast spells as a wizard
No you don’t you need an arcane focus or a component pouch I think only scribes wizard uses their book as a focus
You may use the book as an arcane focus if you are an Order of Scribes wizard but you aren't obliged to. They are changing this in the current playtest rules so that all wizards may use their book as their focus, so it's likely to be in the next PHB.
I only mention the fact it's changing because if it's really important to your character concept, the fact it's slated to change might help convince a DM to allow it now.
You don't, actually. Each morning you prepare a subset of the spells in your book, and you have those memorized for the day. The only time you're casting spells right out of your book is when you're casting a ritual spell that you don't have prepared. Spells with material components require either those components or a spell focus. And as Enoki said, only Order Of The Scribes Wizards can use their book as a focus. In the new One D&D playtest, all Wizards can use their book as a focus, as well as Pact Of The Tome Warlocks.
And whether it’s the spellbook or something else, your spellcasting focus needs to be in your hand to cast spells. Mage Hand does not apply.
Looking to name a faction similar to Dawnguard or vigilants of stendarr.
A mercenary group that focuses on taking down undead creatures.
#dm-discussion might help more
i am trying to make a dnd character using d&d beyond but cant figure out most stuff
Where are you stuck?
Are you looking for something more aligned to DnD Lore, or just cool-sounding suggestions?
Either is fine, full transparency they're wiped out by the BBEG the skeleton King and the party has two remaining members of the faction.
The wipe was pre campaign and that's part of what is aligning them is taking down the S.K.
unfortunately character options arent open to people who dont own content like tasha or xanthars on DNDBeyond
The only book that is free is the PHB
the phb isnt free on DDB, only the basic rules
however, you can share books you own with others if someone in a campaign has a subscription
Well... in the Forgotten Realms Kelemvor is considered the god of the dead. His priests were known as Doomguides, and a specific order of those are the Knights of the Eternal Order. That's only a faction of a few dozen. You could repurpose that?
That's lore from earlier editions of DnD so it's not likely to conflict with anything modern.
oops you right. LOL
Any idea on a non religious one?
This would be more appropriate for #dm-discussion
Just keep the name and drop the religious connotation. "The Eternal Order" I think is quite evocative, to mean the proper order of life and death.

^ useful info to help get you started with D&D
Hello. I’ve wanted to get into DnD for a long time now, but have never had the chance nor friend group to do so. I made a character with the help of a friend yesterday, but I’m still so new to everything and am looking for tips, and a potential group to play with. If that’s possible of course.
Head to #find-a-game for instructions on navigating the server's Looking for Game/Group section.
Hello how’s it going vaguely know how to play I don’t really know how to dm but I want to get better
First you can head on over to #dm-discussion to ask questions and for advice about DMing.
Is your friend willing to play with you? The Dragon of Icespire Peaks adventure in the D&D Essentials Box works well for two characters both played by one player while the other player runs it as the DM.
Hm. I'm not sure. He knows more of DnD than me, but said it's best he doesn't become the DM because he says he WILL Screw things over. But he said it in a funny way.
Everyone screws things up. If you're both of a good mind to have a good time and willing to work together to figure things it, it can work well. I love one-on-one D&D games.
Its an underused and very viable way to play.
Yeah. I started d&d by running the essentials kit for my wife. Sidekicks are a super fun and easy way to round out the party
One of my favorite tricks is that the player gets to run both characters but the DM roleplays the sidekick
It makes for a constant way to roleplay but still gives the player agency over the direction of the game.
Hahaha that's how I did it. I roleplayed and controlled them in combat (unless she wanted them to do something specific)
I also gave her a gray bag of tricks (which I probably used wrong but 🤷♂️
) so it was a blast.
But also, there are tons of useful resources out there for running that box. Mike here is a wealth of information (his stuff, along with Bob world builder, helped me get started with dming) I can't recommend his stuff enough!
I don't think he's worried he'll screw up. But more like he'll Happily use his DM powers to a huge extent. Like he said he would do a lot of surprise encounters and stuff
Hopefully using the adventure in Icespire Peak can help steer him right.
The intent isn't to do "gotchas" on the other player. It's to build fantastic situations and watch the characters navigate them.
A good DM is a fan of the heroes and wants to watch them do awesome stuff.
This might be an obvious answer, but two-weapon fighting style, that’s basically dual-wielding? Like if I have a dagger and hand axe, I’d roll both of them for damage dealt?
Basically, yes. Without the TW fighting style, though, only one gets your modifier bonus to the damage
You worded that a little stangely, but more or less, yeah. You make individual attacks for each, and roll damage for each one based on what you used for that attack.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#TwoWeaponFighting
When you take the Attack action and attack with a light melee weapon that you're holding in one hand, you can use a bonus action to attack with a different light melee weapon that you're holding in the other hand. You don't add your ability modifier to the damage of the bonus attack, unless that modifier is negative.
If either weapon has the thrown property, you can throw the weapon, instead of making a melee attack with it.
Gotcha. Thanks guys!

Alright appreciate it 😆
Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
Anyone else find it extremely off-putting when someone introduces themselves as new and instead of anything else being said, like actually responding to them, the bot command is run?
After you read the rules and/or watch the tutorial videos, feel free to ask questions here.
I do try to add a few of my own words usually. Otherwise its a bit unpersonal, I agree
¯_(ツ)_/¯
I agree, its a little bit off-putting. But, given the number of newcomers we get every single day, it can definitely be a lot to try to type out a personalized welcome message to each one. That's kinda the whole point of the bot. Perhaps at the very least we could be more clear about what the bot message is. A lot of people are just naturally inclined to read around imbedded text like that, because it looks like an add or something
It's more that it's gotten to the point if anyone mentions the word "new", the command is run without any thought to what was actually said under the guise of "I'm being helpful"
Just because someone is new doesn't mean that they don't already have the info and comes off as rude and off putting more than anything
Is there any spell that lets you switch places with a person and object
Hey I’ve never played dnd before but I really want to have never had the friends that we into it was wondering if anybody could throw me into a game and teach me some stuff??
The problem is that there are more players than DMs so you may take you a while to find a DM who will have an opening and be willing to teach you.

Sorry for the very late response, but there isn’t anything that lets you directly “switch places” with a target. The closest you will get is either the Vortex Warp spell, which lets you target a creature and teleport them to another location within range, or the Echo Knight, which can use its bonus action switch places with specifically just its echo
have you learnt the rules?
vortex warp is so fun
No sadly

Hii, I'm fairly new to DND like I've played like several sessions of my friends campaign. After playing a bit of my friends game, I wanted to try it out for myself. I looked at videos, some of the books and help from friends but is there anything I should know like tips on how to be better or how to describe a area. Please please tell me your tipsssss. Thanks!
When describing an area try to say every detail there is so you can almost imagine the place exactly in your head
Ok thanks!
Are you trying to be a DM (dungeon master) or a player mostly?
A bit of both? I would try being a player a bit first before DMing- and take a look at all the classes so that you understand the system and how everyone plays a bit better. My advice for playing would be to make a character that has flaws, but flaws that are meant to be "beaten" by other party members. Let them change your character's mind. Advice for DMing would be to make sure to give every player a spotlight (even the quiet ones) so that nobody feels left out! It is a social group game, so everyone should have a chance to talk! :) Good luck playing/DMing, and remember to have fun!
Don't be discouraged if you wanna start with dming though! It's a totally valid way to start your time with this hobby. There are numerous resources out there to help you get started dming starter adventures like Lost Mine of Phandelver and Dragon of Icespire Peak
Truth, I didn't mean to discourage at all! :)
Apologies dunl, didn't mean to ping
thank you guys, I think this advice will help alot
You'll probably find that if you want to have multiple DMs, they would each run seperate parallel stories, rather than taking turns being in charge. This is because a lot of adventures rely on mystery and story, the DM needs to read ahead, and the players really shouldn't.
There are certain games where you can have rotating DM's, but it wouldn't work for anything that relies on secrets.
What i meant by that was after one whole campaign another person in my group would dm next
I get you - That's a good way to do it.
yeah thanks
To get into dnd?
Yes
I’d read the free basic rules especially the parts on combat and character creation and try making a character

@lyric fjord Once you have an idea for how the rules work, it might be worth watching a bit of 'real play' on youtube, i.e. people playing a game. IN particular, if you aren't intending to play Lost Mine of Pahndelver, WotC made a video where they played through it, and it's a good introduction because it's quite slow-paced, and they have lots of times where players ask about the rules.
It’s also cool to make mistakes. There’s lots of rules.
My advice is to check out the basic rules, read the ones on character creation, combat, and spellcasting.
Learn how to search the book for rules as questions come up, get players who are willing to work with you rather than take advantage of your lack of knowledge, and stay away from homebrew for your first few games.
Hey can i ask someone in the dm for help, cuz its a picture and i cant send pictures here? (I dont know how to explain it)
You can share a link to the picture here.
Nvm ill try to explain it
So on the character sheet in the skills tab, on left side there are circles(im using a premade character). Why are some circles filled and some not?
hi
You’re proficient in them skills so like athletics you get the associated bonus from strength plus proficiency to any athletics roles
question are guns in the main game or are they home brew?
Both
Main game in the dungeon masters guide
There are official guns and homebrew guns
what would a revolver count as
Both, there is an official revolver in the Dungeon Master's Guide, but there are also homebrew revolvers that people have made
what's the difference?
One is official, the other is not
what do you mean "check for races"?
like how do you see all the official races like a list of them
I don't know of any such list, but I'm sure someone has put one together somewhere
ok
They are all here, though it's not a handy table unfortunately. https://www.dndbeyond.com/races
thanks
Oh cool, I didn't realise that page worked without purchased content
Good shout @viral pelican
I'm a physical books guy, so I only see whats free on DnD Beyond, which can sometimes be handy!
I'm a poor guy so online is my only way
You can buy individual races for £1.99 (website only doesn’t work on the app)
D&D Beyond has some decent sales on a regular basis. I tend to scoop up books during those times to save a good bit of cash.
That or your local library may have physical copies to check out for free.
To clarify, the purchases themselves do work in the app. However, the purchase has to be made on the website first.
Oh so like if im proficient in athletics and if i attack i get both bonuses from athletics and strenght?(if the thing im trying to do is athletics based)
No.. attack rolls are another type of roll.
You add your proficiency bonus to your attack roll if you are proficient with the weapon you are attacking...
(Plus your strength for melee attacks, or your dex for ranged attacks)
And how do i know if im proficient with a weapon?
Sorry if the questions are dumb im trying really hard to grasp everything
Your class will tell you which weapons (or category types) you are proficient with
It will usually be from your class. Sometimes it can be from race. It's part of character creation. And that's a great question for this channel, so don't sweat it.
The class (and possibly race) will mention which weapons you are proficient with.
As well as your race if your race provides any weapon proficiencies
I deleted the "background" bit because I was misremembering how the Gladiator background works - it gives you a weapon, but not a proficiency in that weapon.
Oh ok i get it thx ppl
Hello everyone!
Anybody here use role20 or fantasygrounds for online games?
Many do, as well as the other vtts
Roll20 is one of the more popular VTTs (it has a free version as well as a monthly sub version for additional features).
You have levels of automation, from almost none (Owlbear rodeo), intermediate to more automation (r20) to highly automated (fantasy grounds)
I don't know where foundry stands, but afaik its fairly popular these days as well
Foundry has lots of modules to make it as automated as the GM wants their game to be.
I used roll 20, and then moved to foundry
Foundry doesn't do much out-of-the-box. It's very much "batteries not included". But, if you put in the time, you can really make it sing. I love it, but I'm also very comfortable with troubleshooting problems.
Also, roll20 allows you to buy (/rebuy) licensed pre-loaded versions of some official campaigns. Foundry has no such shop functions, and I wouldn't dare to speculate on the legitimacy of some of the "workarounds" like D&D beyond integration that are available. It's great if you have your own maps, though, or relish the idea of setting up each encounter yourself.
is the free version extremely bare-bones or is the paid content just handy extra stuff?
This describes the various features at each tier: https://help.roll20.net/hc/en-us/articles/360037774633-Feature-Breakdown
This topic might be better suited to #third-party-tools-archive at this point, though.
I'm trying to pick a VTT for my first-time players, I want to be able to show them a good amount for visualization sake while also keeping track of their important info and being able to walk them thru their first encounters
Doesn't have to be super fancy but I am also a pretty new DM so need something new-user friendly
tysm for that link
There's a great guide to the various VTTs out there you might want to look at: https://flash-acrylic-5ca.notion.site/4dfdbfba18324113931cc769a5525cc2?v=1dc8207eedff4b6f8ca4c47941022481

Already contacted a few people there in the (DM)s as they requested! :). But I may need a hand with the whole character creation thing? Do I do that before or after I get accepted to a campaign and all that?
I'd say: have some ideas of what characters you'd like to play first. Take a look at the classes and the races to get a general picture of what might be fun, but don't write up a full character sheet unless you're looking for some practice making one.
You never know what your DM will allow or deny, what their world is like, or what the other members of the party will be doing, so it's best not to get too attached to a character concept yet!
Aye, it's good to have some barebone ideas ready, namely what class(es) you may want to play, but otherwise be ready to change subclass ideas as well as race ideas as some DM's will limit what you may have access to based on what sort of world they have put together or what options they may wish to restrict access to
It never hurts to practice making character sheets though
Look for a nearby Adventurer’s League
Hi I'm new to dnd I just experienced my first campaign 2 days a go and am slowly getting a hang of how to play. I've already got several characters drawn out and I'm working towards making sheets for them I only have one available character

Hey guys, I got a rogue elf with high dexterity and acrobatics proficiency and a fighter dwarf with high strength and athletics proficiency. There's a gap that they have to jump over. Why do DnD rules decide that Athletics should decide if a character makes it over. Gimli even said ''Toss me!'' to Aragorn cause he couldn't jump that gap. Why is it frowned upon to use dexterity. The olympic jumpers aren't muscley bodybuilders...they're well built! But not thick with muscles.
Imagine legolas saying I'm sorry Gimli I can't jump that far....like WHAT?
Per the rules, jumping uses Strength. Your DM may or may not grant an exemption to that rule if given a good reason to.
Technically, neither Athletics or Acrobatics proficiency change the distance you can jump.
Strength isn't just upper body. You need to do leg days too.
You can find the rules for jumping here:

Yea I just got the monster manual yesterday and I’m building my character sheet now
Are you planning to DM because only a DM would need the MM.
The first book you should get is the Player's Handbook.
You can either use d&d beyond (easy but doesn't teach you much), form fillable pdf (https://dnd.wizards.com/resources/character-sheets), or things like dice cloud or gsheets
I was planning to have a solo play through but the I found this discord server
Again, you don't need the MM as a non-DM player. The PHB is the one book everyone needs to play D&D.
There are plenty of other D&D-related Discord servers (and on Facebook) if you want to try to find a group to play with.
Is there like a pdf I could find?

Question but as a dark elf level 1 ranger can I learn cure wounds and use it on yourself?
Ranger's don't cast spells until level 2.
The Cure Wounds spell can be cast on anyone, including the caster.
um hi
Ok when would I know to level up
Up to your DM
That depends if the DM is using experience points (XP) or milestone method.
I think I’ll do the milestone method but what would that mean
That's not your decision to make. It's the DM's decision on how the PCs level up.
Oh ok where could I find a DM and other people
Check out #find-a-game
Ok thanks
Are there any campaigns that are for younger kids

hello±
are there vc's?
Hello everyone, hope you're all doing well.
I have some newbie questions. Im currently playing with my brother and im a baby dm, I've played a lil 3.5 in the past with some friend but me and my brother are playing 5e.
I'm trying to create a key NPC for the story, and in 3.5 you could have skills like blacksmithing, carpentry, alch, etc as additional character skills.
I can't seem to find the 5e equivalent. They all seem to be lumped into the same category as proficiencies. There also isn't any spot to put the skills on the character sheet as well.
Does that mean one have the same proficiency in blacksmithing as someone else in alchemy?
I feel im missing something.
Can somebody ple explain clarify it for me? Thanks.
Not on this server.
oh ok thanks
5E is about simplicity of the rules so unlike 3.5E where there were practically skills for everything 5E's ability skills are more generic.
So blacksmithing would be a tool-based skill that you would need to be proficient in Blacksmith's Tools to get the proficient bonus with it. Similiarly, you need to be proficient with Alchemist Tool's to get the proficiency bonus for it.
Ah ok, i think I got it. Ty
Proficiency bonus is a set number that increases at intervals when you level up
When you are proficient In ability, such as athletics or stealth, you add both the relevant ability (STR, CHA, etc) and your profiency bonus
For tools, such as brewing or forging tools, the DM has discretionary to pick the ability that is applicable, and then you and proficiency bonus if you have that tool proficiency
There are no skill points like in 3.5E but rather skill rolls are based on the relevant ability and your proficient bonus. You're either proficient with an ability skill or you're not.
I understand that, my confusion comes from life skills or lake there of in 5e like blacksmithing/alchemy etc.
But I have a better understanding now. Ty all.
Bro, I still haven't figured out how to do it
You can learn more about tool proficiencies here:

How to do what?
Where exactly are you stuck?
I don't know what to do
What have you done so far?

I got to the screen but that I couldn't figure out anything because my internet was so bad

I'm trying to get to the screen with a digital one

hey can someone help me out. i don't know what one of my players AC (armor class should be.)
What class are they? What kind of armor are they using? What’s their dexterity modifier?
they are a wizard they have no armor and there dexterity modifier is +3
With no armor and no spells and no items?
Then your AC is 13 (10 + dex).
omg thank you
Without armor or a shield, your character’s AC equals 10 + his or her Dexterity modifier.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#ArmorClass
thank you. yall are a big help
this is my first time being a DM so im glad yall are helping me out
while you've recieved all the technically correct information, there is a very likely chance they'll cast the Mage Armor spell on themselves to make their AC = 16 (13 + DEX)
https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/mage-armor
Hey so I made a Chaotic Neutral Variant Aasimar Monk who has a Rapier and A whip could you guys please look over the character sheet to see if I should fix anything
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/102814408
You probably don’t want to wear armor.
(And wouldn’t normally have armor in your starting equipment.)
Wearing armor will prevent you from using a lot of your monk abilities.
And since you’re not proficient in that armor, there’s a number of other penalties, too.
Rapiers and whips also don’t count as a monk weapon, so that might cause some conflict with your class features, too.
If you really want those equipment choices, another class like Fighter might fit better.
Out of curiosity, why did you pick monk?
Yeeeeeah, this build is a bit confusing. Not sure where the armor proficiency is coming from as is; and, wearing armor is going to disable your second level Unarmored Movement feature...and the rapier doesn't make sense either
It disabled Martial Arts, too.
Oh so it does. Yeah....this just seems like a fighter-lite or a sneak attackless rogue
If you're set on using a whip, rapier or both you could take the Way of the Kensei at level 3 to gain proficiency in those weapons
That won’t help with the armor, though. And you’ll still have trouble until you reach level 3.
Naturally
I chose monk cause it seemed fun to try and I was like hey why not although you definitely have a point with armor
“Hey why not” is as good a reason as any.
But I think you’ll be better off changing either your class or your equipment.
Well your in luck cause I just changed him to a Neutral Good Folk Hero

Hello
Can anyone help me experience how to actually play the game? I got down to my character but now Idk how to use him in an actual campaign
It sounds like you've got everything you need to join a group
The only way to get experience playing a character, is to play the character
Aaah I see, where do you think I can find groups? I've been trying to find people to actually learn at least a little
Are you looking to play in-person or online?
Online
#find-a-game has everything you need to start your search, including:
• Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
• Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
• Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
Otherwise you can also use the various LFG (looking for group) methods across the internet such as facebook pages and subreddits
Looking in multiple places at once can be a good way to accelerate the process, finding a game can often be the hardest part of playing D&D but certainly worth the effort
Alright thank you for the help, I actually have a group composed of 3 people who are also new to the game so what we need is really a dm
Depends on the dm. Some people do run games like that (though it's not really common anymore)
Also depends on the party if they have any spells it revive you or stop you having the make death saving throws
ok ty
There's quite a few ways for people to come back from the dead, and you will find that adventure modules for beginners often sprinkle these in the path of the players. They are expensive, so they aren't treated like a fallback option, but act as a safety net. Revivify is the spell you'll see at low levels.
ok ty
Also getting down to death savings throws in the first place is unlikely depending on the kind of campaign
Let alone failing them
ok ty!
if i roll stats for a character and the stats are bad do i just have to stick with it
If all the rolls total below a certain number that I can’t remember rn you can reroll
Your DM will tell you what method to use for their campaign. While rolling for stats is the traditional and original method, they might instead use a system that gives more balanced characters: an array of pre-set stats for you to assign to which attribute you like, or a "point but" system. If they are rolling, they will tell you the method they are using, and whether rerolls are allowed.
Use point buy or standard array until you find a DM
ok ty
Heyy I just joined and I have some questions can someone help?
How do you join a campaign? Also how can a play with others?
Sorry for the basic questions
You play with others by joining a campaign
To find a campaign, check any local game stores, and also this server has some channels for that
Wooo! Great thanks a lot!
All g
about to have my first campaign any things i should know
I'm going to play with my friends but we don't know if we could be some races (halfelf for example) with the esencial kit
The essentials kit is just an adventure + the basic rules. Any character made with the official rules (including rules outside the basic rules) should be completely fine for the adventure
Tyy
if I become proficient in a saving throw from two different sources via multiclassing, would I add my proficiency bonus twice?
thanks

Good morning everybody
Is there like a video for beginner dungeon Masters on YouTube?
Mainly for like online ones. If there is could someone please send me a link like DM me a link
What advise you after?
Like the basic and rules
Handbook Helper covers the general basics of D&D.

There's always people here to answer whatever questions you've got, whenever you've got them.
Because I'm going hiking
One of the absolutely most helpful videos for me was this WotC actual play which is really slow and unglamorous, and uses the starter kit adventure that I was DMing. It really helped with understanding in practice how the rolls would go.
https://youtu.be/hgNRe76o4_8
Good to watch once you think you have got to grips with the rules and just want to see if you can follow along. The adventure is available for free on dnd beyond.
Seconding that series of videos (there are only four). They're a lot more in line with ordinary play, unlike the professionally produced shows.
Go ahead and ask.
when a player decides to attack, I set a difficulty class mentally and roll if they hit right?
im hosting a session with my friends its my first time
Attack? You use the monster's AC.
hello everyone I am a newcomer to D&D and beginner so I would appreciate if you guys can give me tips and tricks on how to start playing D&D?
and in cheap budget would be nice
So they have to roll over the monsters ac?
DC is Difficulty Challenge, which is used for ability skill checks
They have to roll or exceed the monster's AC.
Equal or greater than the AC.
That means they hit and i roll to see damage?
They roll their damage dice, not the DM.
Did you read the free Basic Rules yet?
Im not sure they have dice
I just bought a set of dice
So loan them some. They can also use a digital dice roller.
There are dice roller apps.
okay ill keep that in mind
no

what about when a monster hits a player
Same thing
Roll a d20, add any relevant modifiers, and compare the total to the target's AC. If it's equal or greater, that's a hit.
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube (linked above).
You can find the rules for making an attack here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#MakinganAttack
Little protip...it's really dang fun to throw out a whole fistfull of dice. So, once people are comfortable with how the rolls work, if you have enough dice, you can roll the d20s to hit and the damage dice all in one go. If they hit, great, you have the damage. If they don't then the damage die dont matter. It can speed up gameplay a lot, and gives you a much more satisfying roll experience.
You don't see it so much in streamed games because it's more confusing for newbies.
thanks
Initiative is the order everyone plays in a round or what?
basically yes.
a round is 6 seconds and everyone gets a turn in a round. Initiative is rolled to determine the order of turns
If you're surprised, you can't move or take an action on your first turn of the combat, and you can't take a reaction until that turn ends. A member of a group can be surprised even if the other members aren't.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#Surprise
Thank you
i love this server already
what are reactions
Im reading the description from what razorwing sent
i cant understand
Reactions are special actions that you can take on any turn, but only in response to something. For example, there's the spell Shield, which decreases your opponent's chance to hit you. You can only cast it when a creature attempts to hit you.
that makes sense
Each turn, each character can do:
One action
One bonus action
One reaction
Their movement
(And one free object interaction like opening a door)
Class abilities, spells and other status effects modify this, but that's the baseline
Actions, reactions and bonus actions are separate sets of options, and will be specified in abilities and rules quite clearly.
There's a handy cheat sheet here for things you can do on your turn.

Does anyone know of an easy way to create character sheets for more obscure races/subraces like pixies, orcs, drows, or vampires? I've been using the character creator available on the D&D Beyond website, but that doesn't seem to have an option available for those races.
You can buy individual races for dndbeyond
Not all of the ones you mentioned have official races, though.
Fairies and dhampir
You can also add a homebrew race using whatever rules you and your DM agree to.
I've seen bundles and such available for purchase in the marketplace section in the race selection, but they doesn't appear to be a guide showing what's included inside the books/bundles.
Have a look on the website not the app it gives you an option to buy individual items from books
Thank you.
how do hit dice determine the health points of a character
you gain one hit die per level, based on your Class(es)
at first level, you get the max number of that die as your hit points. when you level up, you can either take the average (rounded up) or roll to see how many hit points you gain
you also add your Constitution modifier to the hit points gained for every level
So as an example, a wizard gets a d6 + Con mod of health per level. First level would be 6 + Con Mod. Each level after you can either roll a d6 + your Con to determine your hit points or take the average, 4, and add your Con mod to determine your hit points there after
So you if i have 4 hp my hit dice is d8 i level up and i roll 2 dice and the outcome + constitution modifier is added to my total hp?
okay example:
you are a wizard with a 14 (+2) in constitution:
your hit die is a d6
so at first level, you have 6+2 (8) hit points. At second level, you gain 1d6+2 more hit points
max HP can be changed by some abilities in the game, but almost all of them are temporary
This process is how your Max HP changes
There are some monsters that can "drain" your max hp temporarily.
Hit dice can also be spent during a short rest to recover your current HP. Spent hit dice can be regained during a long rest.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/adventuring#Resting
does copying a spell in my spellbook overrides the fact that I have the maximum number of spells I can have at this level ?
like, imagine I'm a level 2 wizard, so I can know 3 level 1 spells
I get to level 3
I know 4 level 1 spells and 2 level 2 spells now
do I have to let 1 spell go to copy one in my spellbook ?
or if I copy a level 2 spell, I can directly have 3 level 2 spells in my spellbook ?
You’re only limited by the number of spells you can prepare from your book, but as long as you’ve got scrolls and the gold to inscribe them your book can hold far more than you can prepare.
You can even ritual cast the ones you don’t have prepared!
oh that's cool
Yeah it’s what makes wizards great.
Yeah, there is no maximum number of spells you can have in your book.
You could in theory have them all.
Wizards do not have a maximum number of spells that they can know. If you find more spells, you can add them to your spell book. No limits. They do, however, have a miximum number of spells that they can PREPARE each day. So while you can have any number of spells known, you can't use all of them every day
And then of course they are further limited from that by the number of spell slots they have to actually cast things
The simple way to think about it is this:
- Spellbook: The collection of all of your spells
- Prepared spells: Spells chosen from your spell book that you are ALLOWED to cast that specific day
- Spell Slots: The resource you must spend to actually do said casting
And don't forget you can cast ritual spells from your book (as a ritual) even when they're not prepared.
Hi, I'm new to DnD, my sibling recently introduced it to me and I found it pretty interesting and was looking to see if a could play it. Is there a age requirement
For D&D? Not really.
Most people do like it if you're mature about it and whatnot
Specific groups might have an age requirement, but not the game itself.
To be in this server, only age limit is the one in Discord's Terms of Service, which I think is 13+
Yeah 13
Probably something simple so you can ease into playing
Or if you wanna get spicy play a half caster so you learn spells alongside
Easiest to understand is debated, but most people agree its either monk or fighter
Rogue and barbarian arent far behind
Honestly, just go for whatever you find interesting.
None of it is unknowable.
So tell the story you want to tell. You’ll have more fun if you’re invested.
Hello, I've just hosted my first D&D session, and my party has been up to some antics and I need help deciding how to 'dm' things moving forward
One of the characters particpiating has a Charm ability score of 20, and usually rolls 20+ for intimidation rolls (with prof. bonus and charm modifier.)
Does this allow him to intimidate basically any creature that can speak common? And force it to do his bidding regardless?
As a simple answer, no.
You're the dm you control what happens and what makes the most sense and what would be the most fun.
Not necessarily, no. When and where a check is necessary falls on you, the DM, to decide if it falls into an appropriate situation. Just because someone says "I'm going to stealth!" and then rolls high doesn't mean they disappear from sight in the middle of a court....when all eyes are on them to begin with
Also intimidating someone isn't limited by language barriers
So like, let's say they're in a goblin cave and they're about to face a group of six goblins. Can that character roll an intimidation check to get the goblins to scatter?
What if they're intimidating their party members to follow orders or smth?
That is up to you. Is there a greater threat in the goblins' minds that would compel them to stand their ground? In a fight or flight response, would they choose to fight? That is your call as the DM and whether the ability check may be made to begin with
Honestly that sounds kind of mean
Unless there is consent by players, this sort of behavior at a table can be toxic and bring a campaign to a grinding halt. Friction within a party can occur, but the party should not be fighting itself because someone wants to take control of the game
just started seeing this and got interested, and im pressing the create an account button but nothing happens
Well it's party of all evils and one neutral so it makes sense that they're fighting tbh
They were deciding whether to leave someone behind to watch the carriage or just go all together, and the half-elf (the charm build) intimidated everyone to just go
Look if you guys are having fun it's all cool but I personally think someone intimidating everyone to do what they want ain't great
ohh nevermind what i said its because im already logged in
Does the Ability Score Increase apply every level including level 1? Or every four levels?
Ah, that makes sense
And you don't get ability score increase at 1
Ok got it, thanks
Can a sorcerrer make up spells to learn?
Or does it have to be from the book?
I have a sorcerrer who wants to specialise in Spatial Magic, is that even a thing in D&D?
You should read the rules my man
You do as part of your race whether you stick with the predetermined ASI your race has or use the custom lineage option presented in Tasha and other sources that lets you decide how to spend your 3 level 1 ASI points (2/1 or 1/1/1)
Well I worded it wrong
There's ability score increase and ability score improvement as a class feature
The rules are confusing though
While homebrew (made up) content is up to gm discretion; if this is your first go I strongly recommend you don't allow this until you have a better feel for balance.
Okay then, that's probably what i'll do
Another thing, are shopkeeps strong? Like, if they were attacked do they have anything in place to defend themselves? Like traps or bodyguards?
Generally, I mean
Sorry if im asking dumb questions
It all depends lol
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hD-LWHhiseE&list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN&index=1
That's up to you there's no established rules for that
Once again, gm discretion.
However, towns are close knit, cities have guards. It's up to you to create consequences for the players actions.
Thanks I will
Ok, got it
There’s a number of races that cast cast a spell or two.
its the high elf isnt it?
But if it’s spells you’re after, most of that will come from your class.
Depending on your class there are several races that would be "optimal"
is high elf one of them?
High elf does get an extra wizard cantrip, yes.
yay
By default, I think they get an INT boost as well, making them an easy choice for a wizard.
oke ty
You will want to check with your DM if they are using the fixed racial ability improvements or floating ones, so you can get it in your casting ability
Newer races don’t have fixed ability score improvements, so any of those can fit any class.
And yeah, your DM may let you reassign those ability scores for older races like elves.
I always forget that racial boosts can be flexible now 🙃
wait so another question
can i use the ability light and be able to blind my enemies with it? is there certain boundries for spells or?
Rules as written: no
But a gm might allow it as a one off for creativity. I know it wouldn't fly regularly at my games.
okay
Generally speaking: if it was meant to let you blind someone, it would say so.
okay, because i was just imaginating this:
Me: sees a monster
Me: grabs and throws a blinding object at the monsters face
Monster: cant attack because of the condition they are in and lets me get 1 or 2 extra turns depending on the role on the dice
Hello! How consistant should by bonuses be on characters I make? Currently I have a character that has a +4 charisma modifier and a -1 dexterity modifier and that just feels like too big of a range but I'm new so I don't know.
Wait should I put that in #character-discussion ?
Use Standard Array or Point Buy instead of rolling.
wait does this mean it works or? here: If you target an object held or worn by a hostile creature, that creature must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw to avoid the spell.
Mmm, wouldn’t be how Blinded works. A creature would have disadvantage on attacks but it would not be unable to act
I did
oh oke
This just means whether it avoids having the object it is holding light up. It does not become blinded on a failed save
okay ty
wait so the creature that im attacking against has to wear a thing/hold a thing for me to be able to blind them on a failed save?
No…you cannot, per RAW, use the Light cantrip to cause a creature to suffer the Blinded condition. If you could, it would say as much in the spell description
ohhh okay i think i just keep getting brain farts because its 12pm rn for me so imma sleep
Light is what’s colloquially referred to as a utility spell.
It’s meant to solve problems other than combat.
If it had any direct use in combat, like blinding someone, it would say so.
cant sleep so im going to just ask another thing, does it matter what die you get when you start as a class for example wizard starts with 1d6? because i see some abilities that say 1d8 so does that mean i cannot use the abilities for now until i level up or?
That’s hit dice
Hit dice?
That’s the dice you roll to get your health
Each class has their own set of Hit Dice that determines your hit points (hp).
For abilities you have all the dice
Weapons have their predetermined damage dice
Spells' descriptions say which dice to use for damage.
oke
Do people still play like og dnd with taverns and that stuff
What do you mean?
People still play various editions of D&D if that's what you're asking.
No I meant like idk how to describe it medieval dnd with taverns and castles
Um, sure.
D&D has typically been rooted in high fantasy
Have you seen people play D&D?
Yea
Yea because all the dnd campaigns I tried to join before were steampunk or super magical anime stuff
I hated it
Well that’s those groups - every group plays differently
D&D isn't just knights and dragons. It has evolved in the past 49 years to have different settings — from magical ships in space to fighting demons in the Abyss to Gothic horror to a dystopian Mad Max desert world
The setting at the table is dependant on the individual DM.
Yea ig but I just couldn’t play those sci-fi magical games
Okay that's fine. Just find a different table that suits your taste.
I really wanted to play some dnd and I'm thinking of being a dm for a group. It's my first time so should I maybe get something like the essentials kit to help
The essentials kit does make it easier to get your feet wet, is an easier starting point, and helps to discover whether you actually like the game without dropping a bunch of money on the 3 core books.
Or you could end up like me, buying the kit+ books at the same time and then never once touching the essentials kit.

thank you
But if you’ve got any specific questions, ask away!
thanks dude, ima try to start with building my character and understanding the system
i am planning on starting a campaign in my uni, any tips or ideas on how I should start? i love the concept of d&d and have watched others play but never joined in myself..
Have you read the (free) Basic Rules yet?
mostly yes
You get skills based on your background and class (and sometimes race)
hmmm, got it, but it says i can get 2 more
also whats the difference between forgotten realms and dragonlance
They are two different settings. FR is very much a kitchen sink High Fantasy setting, where as Dragonlance focuses more on the War of the Lance and everything involved with that.
so forgotten realms is more about magic and dragonlance is about the fight ?
which one is more used?
Most of the official adventure books for fifth edition are based in the Forgotten Realms.
my bad i meant skills
hmmmm
so ill choose that
Ah. 😅
Perception, investigation, and stealth are probably the most commonly used.
Not necessarily. Dragonlance started off as a novel series that was then adapted into d&d and focuses more on how the war affects those living in the world.
But there’s no right or wrong answer for skill choices. Just pick the ones that tell the story you want to tell.
oh ok
i got perception and investigation
ok now a language
Languages don’t matter too much
If you want to get your feet wet, keep an eye on the lfg channel. I'm sure you could find a beginner friendly game to help you get a feel for things.
druid seems fun
Good choice, let's you turn into a bear. And any opportunity to be a bear is a great opportunity.
There’s alot to manage for a new player. Doable, but it asks you for decisions
and some homework
casters can be kinda difficult for new players but if it seems the most fun to you, by all means go ahead
Fighter is probably the easiest to grasp
what do the ability scores mean, should i use the standard set so its not that complicated? dont rlly know what each ability means but i know that there are 6
If you don’t have a DM yet, then the standard array is a good choice to start.
okay[
That or point buy.
A straightforward class with extremely good subclasses
Will let focus on learning movement, positioning, and action economy
Different classes will value different abilities to work best
for martials, it depends on your weapon and armor mosty
For casters, it will depend on your spellcasting ability
whats the ability that defines the durability of someone? strenght?
constitution
so i need constitution dexterity and strenght for a fighter?
Depends on the armor
i guess that makes sense since i need to fight and have health
You want Con at 14 at least but the first decision is: what weapon
You wont be able to have high str AND dex generally so it depends on the weapon which will be more priority
what do you think would be cool
Just tell us what your fighter looks like in your head - what weapon are they wielding?
a sword
two handed or one handed
two
so like super big sword?
yeah, i guess either that or a sword and shield
i think it fits the idea of a fighter
for sure
Nice. A classic choice.
Having both is also an option once your character has some money (or has appropriated equipment from villains)
For those weapons, you're likely best off assigning your highest ability score into STR, your 2nd highest into CON, your 3rd highest into DEX.
You don't need to worry about saving throws at this point
i believe you
At some point during your adventures, the DM will let you know that you need to make a saving throw. The character sheet will have already calculated it for you. If you roll well, then you avoid something nasty happening to your character
ooohhh i got it
i chose intimidation and survival as proficiencies, so my character can fit the type of a fighter thats focused on getting the job done
whats the difference between wisdom and intelligence
Intelligence is how good you are at figuring stuff out.
Wisdom is how good you are at remembering things you've been taught
ok
The different ability scores are all described here, as well:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/using-ability-scores#UsingEachAbility
ill read some more before i ask more questions
Yup, that's a much better and extensive description 🙂
Or there’s a cheat sheet here for a more at-a-glance description.

Also waves to Spam
Good to see you!
I'm 17 hours into a website deploy I'm managing, and waiting for someone to complete tasks, so doing the rounds of some servers to chat.
Thought I would pop in here and maybe be helpful. 😄
thx, but heading off topic
Definitely runs before Spam slaps me
How does the wild shape health system work? Does my character lose health if they get hit, or do I use the animals health?
Question i’m playing as a oath of vengeance paladin and im using a glaive so my reach is 10ft…. if i get the polaram master feat where if they enter my range i get an opprotunity attack and i casted my vow of emnity on them the previous round do i get advantage on the opprotunity attack??
i think you use the animals and when you drop to 0 you change back to your original form
Your hp is replaced by the beast’s, so if you take damage while wild shaped, it’s subtracted from there.
You use the creatures health and once that's gone, you revert back to your normal form and use your current normal form's HP.
Ok thank you
It doesn’t effect your own HP unless you take enough damage to drop the beast past 0.
Then you revert back and subtract any remaining damage from your own HP.
Yeah, you’d get advantage.
how do i get gp, to pick a lifestyle
Let's say your Druid is at 45hp when you transform into a creature with 30hp. You set that 45hp aside, and any hits you take are applied to the 30hp, as well as any healing you receive as long as you're transformed. Let's say the enemies have gotten your creature form down to 5hp, and you then take a hit that does 8 points of damage. This is enough to drop your creature form to 0hp, but instead of falling unconscious you revert back to your normal form. Any damange beyond what it took to drop you to 0 gets applied as "overflow" to your original hp. So in this case, 5 of those 8 points of damage were enough to knock you out of Wild Shape, the remaining three are carried over and you would end up back in your regular form with 42hp(45 minus those 3 overflow points). It also works this way if you're under the effect of the Polymorph spell.
Your class and background will give you your starting equipment and wealth, there is also an option to take a larger amount of starting gold instead of equipment, and use that to buy the specific things you need. As for the "lifestyle", that's more a roleplaying preference, indicating how cheaply or luxuriously you like to live and what that would normally cost. In-game circumstances can always affect this, of course.
oh thank you
is it bad that my cleric doesnt have any attacking spells?
It’s a risky choice, at the very least.
you should have some offensive abilities
The cleric had several fine choices, and one of the best combat spells. They arent just healers and priests
Not necessarily. Are you including cantrips as well? It does mean you may be pretty limited in a fight unless you have a weapon to use. Playing a Cleric who doesn't want to deal damage themselves is a valid roleplaying choice, but you'll want to make sure your party is ok with it.
yes all my spells are either heal, debuff, or utility
At least pick up Sacred Flame or Toll the dead cantrips
You dont necessarily even need a weapon
There is unlikely to consistently be combats where doing zero attacks is going to work for your party unless your DM deliberately scales them down
ok ty
are clerics allowed to get anything other than life domain? I created my character on dndbeyond and its the only option
If you want to use the character options from sources (other than the free Basic Rules) you'll need to buy them on D&D Beyond
The Basic Rules include one subclass for each class by default.
But yeah, you’d have to purchase any other subclass you’re interested in.
You can buy just the subclass alone if that’s all you want, though. Whatever you spend gets credited toward the cost of the book itself, too.
There’s 13 other cleric subclasses in total.
Arcana, Death, Forge, Grave, Knowledge, Light, Nature, Order, Peace, Tempest, Trickery, Twilight, and War.
ok ty
Anybody knows if theres any one piece west marches active rn? or any anime related ones?
I would check out #looking-for-community
what happens if I choose a proficiency and then my background also gives that proficiency?
They don't provide any mechanical benefit, you're much better off changing one of the chosen proficiencies
?looking
#find-a-game has everything you need to start your search, including:
• Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
• Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
• Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
@cursive wyvern the linked channel in the above bot post is a good place to start looking
Thank you
Otherwise, you can check out the various LFG (looking for group) forums in places like Facebook pages or subreddits
Finding a game is often the hardest part of playing D&D, so looking in multiple places at once can often accelerate the process
best of luck 🙂
Is there any advice for an app or tool or software to use for character creation

Yea
thats just the command to summon the bot 😉
Thank you this is also my first time using discord too so my replies might be a bit slow
Where Do I Start
I'd go though the links the bot just posted from top to bottom
Up here
you're alright
I usually don't write my proficiencies in stone until after I've taken a background, as I can usually get more proficiencies that way.
Check with the DM. I think in a few cases (read the rogue class descriptions, especially) you might qualify for expertise in that proficiency.
In the Background rules:
If a character would gain the same proficiency from two different sources, he or she can choose a different proficiency of the same kind (skill or tool) instead.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/personality-and-background#Backgrounds
If I hid with my rogue behind a wall, what would be an example of a dm using a goblin to visually find where my rogue is.
p.s. I understand what is being rolled and which checks need to be beaten
Are you asking how a DM might describe the situation?
The goblin places it's nose on the wall and starts to smell through it.
The Rogue didn't shower today..
Hi is there any community kind of games that are not AI based that someone recommends for beginners?
I would hazard a guess that most are not AI based
But we do have #find-a-game to let you know how to use the channels and bots we have
Maybe I got unlucky that’s why I asked 1 was fully ai image generated and another I got an invite to aswell and as an artist suffering from these services I don’t really feel comfortable
I’m gonna wager that’s something most DMs probably won’t state in their post either way. You’ll likely have to inquire about it directly.
Okay I’ll just keep going over servers then, was just hoping for recommended ones
so im completly new here and im wondering is it smart to begin with an hombrew race ???
No it wouldn't be. If you're new to the game, obviously you don't know what's balanced.
Learn the game with what is already there because it's the DM who decides what playable races are allowed. For example, I don't allow any homebrew races/classes in my campaign.
Aye, safer to start with official races as they are confirmed balanced whereas homebrews can be....generous in what they provide for features.
k thx i wil keep that in mind
i did play like 2 sesions with someone making a one piece hombrew game but i didnt like his way of dming so im looking for somthing new ish
Is it smart to? Probably not, but talk to your DM and they might be able to help you find one or work out maybe a custom lineage that would work
Yeah, generally it helps to understand how the engine works before you go swapping the pieces around. Otherwise you might end up with some unexpected performance issues.
But your DM may already have that understanding and be willing to work with you on your idea. It’s worth a conversation at least.
Alternatively, you might be able to re-flavor an existing race. You’d follow all the same rules for it, but just change the way you describe it.
Take a halfling and just call it a mousefolk, for example.
Was woundering how the d&d beyond app works. Also what is a normal wait time to find a game to play in ?
This page describes some of the basics for the app.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/player-app
But if you had any specific questions about it, feel free to ask.
As for finding a game, it can really vary. It’s often a right place, right time kind of deal.
It usually takes persistence and diligence, though. It’s not often quick (and if it is quick, that’s sometimes a red flag).
I see so this may be a strange question but is there virtual boards and dungeon lay outs you can inter act with or is it all just imagination based ?
What you are describing is known as a Virtual Table Top, or VTT. There's no official one, but there is one under development. Popular VTTs include Roll20, and Foundry VTT.
Owlbear is pretty easy to get started with.

I'm having a bit of trouble working the find dm command
Greetings! I was wondering how do I use D&D beyond to dm? It says that there’s a code I need to give my players. How does one get this?
Collections>My campaigns>"named" campaign>upper right corner is a link
copy and share it
What?
What kind of trouble?
Those are the instructions on where to find the invite link for your campaign.
If that’s not what you were asking about, you may need to be more specific.
Hello 🙂
Hi
hey
What's the best place to start learning concepts related to DnD?
• Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
• The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
• For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
• Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
• Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
Thank you!
If you’ve got any specific questions, feel free to ask, too.
I wonder how long the slowmode is
Ok reasonable
What dice do i roll for hit points or do i just keep it stock if im gonna do a level one chacter?
The class should tell you what the hit dice is
Which class are you using @compact verge ?
Okay
Oh i think i rolled a d9
So for level 1 you use 8 + con mod
Idk tbh
That doesn’t exist?
Every level after level one you add 1d8+con mod to your hp
K
If you’re using dnd beyond’s character creator it should calculate the hp for you
For a monk:
Hit Points at 1st Level: 8 + your Constitution modifier
Hit Points at Higher Levels: 1d8 (or 5) + your Constitution modifier per monk level after 1st
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/monk#ClassFeatures
I should read the beginner manual shouldnt i
I have dnd beyond downloaded and a character for any dm that starts players out at lvl 5 nc ive met one now so yea and im thinking of a monk
If you want to start looking for a group to join, #find-a-game can get you started.
Welp i put in a submition also is it ok if i dont have a miniture?
I would recommend making a level 1 character first
Much less to manage
Yea i plan on that but i already have the lvl 5 character made with help
But i dont have any idea on the point of margin for if i can customize my lvl 1 characters traits like charisma and stuff like that
Newish player myself (3 low level campaigns as a player) about to DM the essentials kit for the first time. Any advice? We made characters tonight and I messed a few things up, but will be amending them tomorrow.
There’s some good advice here.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/159-starting-strong-at-your-first-dungeons-dragons
Mistakes can and will happen, though, no matter how long you’ve been playing.
Don’t worry about pausing the game to look something up or ask in #dnd-rules.
And don’t worry about just making something up to keep the game moving either. You can always look up the answer later and share it with the group for next time.
D9 definitely exist, just not used in d&d
I mean in dnd
Best questions to ask as a player during a session 0?
On the Meta side:
- what are they expecting out of D&D
- what are some veils (things they don't want mentioned in too much detail, like injuries/gore) and lines (things they don't want appearing in game at all)
- anticipated frequency of availability
Character based:
- what's driving their character
- what would cause their character to face a dangerous situation?
- How serious or comical the game might be. What sort of tone are we going for?
- Do characters want to know each other before hand?
- Any houserules?
- Should characters be more proactive (setting their own goals and drives) or reactive (reacting to what the DM throws at them)
- Checking to make sure your character concept doesn't conflict with anyone else's character, and if they do, making sure you've talked about how to handle that.
hi. just wondering how open are groups about letting new people join and listen in on their sessions?
I wouldn't say most groups are open to random strangers sitting in and observing their game. You'll probably have better luck looking for D&D livestream games on YouTube/Twitch.
That said I think many groups are fine taking on "new to the game" players if that player shows they are willing to read/learn the rules and click well with the group.
thanks. just wondering since im fairly new to the whole thing
Have you given the free basic rules a read yet?

Hello I’m here now
