What do you mean by not Vanilla?
Yeah. Tbh being a gnome riding a wolf is great because you’re like permanently giving ur advantage
Beast of the land is medium so you can ride it as a small PC
yeah ratty trying to see what beasts you can choose from
found 2 references to eberron a claw foot and
fastieth
nvm a clawfoot is a halfling
With new beast master it has a set stat block you can choose how it looks
I'm gonna be really honest. Because every DM runs their game slightly differently, when trying to figure out things like companions and available wild shapes it's best to work directly with your dm on the specifics of it
I aint got a clue what im doin
Have you got some free basic rules
?new
• Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
• The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
• For bite-sized video walkthroughs, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
• Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
• Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
bet
im new to dnd and really wanting to try out a campaign, i have tried twice now using the find a dm channel, which i think has a 2 week cooldown to post. Does anyone got any advice to find a party/campaign to join?
I’m having a very hard time finding a group. I joined my first game ever as a player last Sunday, but it fell apart because 3 players left after 5 minutes. We were apparently going to try again today, but it got cancelled. I can’t find a game to join for today or tomorrow. Y’all I really want to play but this is somewhat infuriating.
You’ll probably have better luck with a more proactive approach.
Try replying to posts in the other #looking-for channels instead of waiting for people to notice yours.
I wanted to post in looking-for-dm today, but yeah I’m still in cooldown
He isn’t the only person having trouble gotta say
Unfortunately, it can take quite some time for you to find a group that you get along with and meshes well. Be proactive in your search and be patient
Well where else do i search
Oh, I know. Same advice applies, though.
Gonna try roll20. I DM for my kids, but have never played a character in a real game in almost two years of DMing
Finding a group can be hard. Finding the right group can be even harder.
It’s gonna take diligence and persistence.
Well, we have the #looking-for-players channel where dms post the games they are trying to fill. We have #1050206572535623690 for the D&D standardized play. You can also check places like the dnd beyond forums, roll20 forums, reddit. Touch base with your local game stores to see if they can get you in touch with people locally. Libraries and school clubs are another great resource for in person games
The more places you look the more options you’ll have.
@lyric fjord
For in-person games, check out any local libraries, games/hobby shops, and/or school clubs. Try out https://locator.wizards.com/.
Check out various Discords (many D&D YouTubers have public ones with channels to find players/games, for example), MeetUp, Facebook, forums (D&D Beyond, Demiplane, Roll20, Fantasy Grounds, EN World, RPG Geek, RPGnet), Reddit (r/LFG, r/roll20LFG, r/DnDLFG, r/LFG_Europe), StartPlaying, and Warhorn.
If you’re interested in play by post (asynchronous text-based play), check out Role Gate, RPGCrossing, Gamers Plane, D&D Beyond's forums, and Reddit’s r/pbp.
As an extra note, it's worth contacting a local store to ask about games even if you don't see them on the WotC locator. iirc correctly, stores have to complete a process to get added and there are a number of regular AL communities that aren't listed at all. So there are probably unlisted non AL communities as well.
As the new player dm and playing with a new group of players I made a character sheet for their example and my charater i would use if i was playing. though Im extremely worried about explaining the sheet as some of my group mates have chosen species that aren't in the game (Fairy/ pixie)
How would that work would i like? add the species to the story since were doing and already made story.
Fairy is a playable race (it's in Mordenkainen's Monsters of Multiverse book).
Hey yall I want I join a group but I'm a very new beginner, I'm not exaggerating when I say I've only played 1 game and I don't know who wants to deal with that so...
Most tables even if they don't list it are generally ok with taking on new players, you can use the ?looking command (type it in chat here) to see the channels and such for finding online games
If you're looking to find local in-person games in your area I'd recommend checking in with local libraries, game stores and/or googling for Adventures Leagues in your town/city
I played back in 3rd Edition in 2000 (no old man jokes, please) and I am looking to get back into this thing I enjoyed so long ago.
Hoping to find something in the world of online gaming - though many have said it is difficult and takes time

Yeah, its like finding a job. Lots of players want to play and there aren't enough DMs generally
Just gotta keep looking and applying and eventually you'll find a table
I used the character builder to make a lvl 1 warlock. He has a con of 14 so +2 and hit die of d8. Lvl 1 is max hp so why did dnd beyond give me 14hp?
You probably set it to Manual HP before choosing your class.
You can either switch it back to… uh… whatever the non-manual option is called. 😅
Or select Manage HP on the Class tab to set the value.
I am brand new to DnD. I have the starter set , copies of the rules , and a players handbook. Is there any other literature that may be useful before I play my first game? Thanks! I would also really like to become a DM down the road.
Yep that was it
Those sound like the best ones to start with!
If you want more character options, the top choices are:
- Xanathar’s Guide to Everything
- Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything
- Monsters of the Multiverse
I figured that was for level up hp, we’re doing roll and if lower take average. Can I still do that even off manual?
But you may want to first check with your DM to make sure those options are allowed in your game.
Only if you always roll average or lower.
Sounds like you probably do want to be on manual.
Thanks , I have seen those at indigo. I will get them next time I stop by!
Then you can update in on the Class tab under Manage HP.
#frequently-asked-questions gonna go here
well nevermind ill ask here
So how do I ask a dm to join their game? asking since Idk if I dm them in their dm's or do I ask them via the thread
You can respond in the corresponding thread
Either way!
would anyone mind explaining to me how to play dnd online with people, specifically using dndbeyond?
thanks
Hello all
Hey can I talk to a moderator?
Post in #moderator-support, and someone will respond to you when available.
Perfect thank you!
So i'm intrested in playing D&D online, but I only know the basics how to I go about finding people to play with

Would y’all recommend using dnd beyond over the character sheet for first time users?
It does streamline the process, but it also fails to make clear HOW to make a character. Ultimately, then, it depends if you want folks to be able to play or to learn the systems undergirding the game in order to play.
I played once in the early 2000s
Manually doing a character sheet would help you understand the math behind the numbers. D&D Beyond does all the math for you.
It's like learning addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division manually or using a calculator.
not a good metaphor imo since making a character makes you understand the game so much more and help you understand more complicated stuff later on, and with addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division you don't really need to understand how you got the answer as long as its correct or you use a calculator you can do more complicated stuff like algebra for example
Dex to increase AC and saving throws.
Con to increase HP and saving throws.
And your con save to maintain concentration on your spells
Dex affects initiative
recommendations on being a mage?
Wizard or sorcerer?
sorcerer
Have you played D&D before?
Learn what the spells your character has can do. I've had a couple players who thought their PCs' spells could do something but I (the DM) had to pause the game to explain their were completely wrong.
are you talkin in an elemental aspect or he decided to make his own lore?
What?
like trying to make more out of his power than he initially stated
like i said im a greenie idk shit
For example, a player wanted to eat more than one Goodberry at once to get more than 1 hp. I said know because the spell says you can only eat one Goodberry with each action.
did he eat more than 1?
No, because I told her that she couldn't as per the spell.
Again, my suggestion is to learn how your character's spells work so you don't burden your DM, who is busy as it is.
lol okay gotcha
i will fine tune it tonight
what are the paid for campaigns
are they worth?
you pay the Dm to dm
depends on personal preference/time availability and such if its worth it
how high are you right now
on a scale 1 to 10 about a 2
but you ironically showed up when i brought up monetary gain
money money money
well, I guess you're on to me
but to compete with my actual job you'll have to pay me like $70/hour
cool, glad to hear
ok thx bb
Forgive me. I may be just... Tech-stupid, but how do I properly use the #750812887697588356 channel/command. Because I did the command and nothing happened.
is there any way to filter looking for players in awst? I always see people playing in timezones 12 hours apart and stuff
Did you follow the instructions on #find-a-game
I am 99% sure.
https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/1089904541140521003/1110126856964931624/IMG_3490.png did you get this to appear?
That command should normally work unless the bot is having issues.
There are instructions in #find-a-game
@split otter The command doesn't work if you copy and paste it, you have to type it out
thanks i fegurid it out
so how does it work
u just post it and wait
I see you posted in #looking-for-community - folks who want to join your server would click the link and join. If they have questions they can ask in the thread attached to your post or message you on your server or direct message you.
But yes, just wait for responses.

Hey, what’s up? I’m interested in getting into DnD. Does anybody have recommendations for beginners. I’ve watched the series A Crap Guide to DnD by JoCat on YouTube, so I have a pretty basic idea of how everything works
Still trying to learn all of the ins and outs of the 5th edition. I still have my old books from back in the 3rd edition days.
Are there any Must Have suppliments within the 5th edition realm? I do not want to spend hundreds of dollars for a game that I am not even playing yet, but is there anything a player truly needs in DnD Beyond to play this game effectively?
In addition to the core three books (Player's Handbook, Dungeon Master's Guide, and Monster Manual), Xanathar's Guide to Everything and Tasha's Cauldron of Everything are highly regarded both in terms of player facing options and dungeon master tools. In addition, Mordenkainen Presents Monster of the Multiverse is a very useful compendium of both player race options and monsters
So if there was 'Non-Core Three' to compliment the 'Core Three', it'd be
- Xanathar's Guide to Everything
- Tasha's Cauldron of Everything
- Mordenkainen Presents Monsters of the Multiverse
Do players actually needs the Monster's Manual and the DMG?
I will look into the Non-Core three for sure. Depends on if I am able to find an online game or not
No really MM give you more races to choose from but that all depends on what your DM will allow in games
The monster manual doesn't give any race options, it's just monsters
Okay. so the MM and the DMG may be fun to own, but not a must on DDBeyond for playing online games?
I would say if you're a player, the Player's Handbook is all you need, if that (the Basic Rules are solid)
If you're looking at going through D&D Beyond, the only book as a player I'd actually say is a must have is Tasha's Cauldron of Everything. That's because owning that book gives you access to optional class features, a set of optional rules for each class that really dials in a lot of useful fixes and tweaks
Everything else you can buy piecemeal
How much more does the PHB have over the Basic Rules? I just started my account yesterday.
Sorry if this is too remedial for this server, but I want to be able to enjoy the game, should I get into a group
Not at all too remedial, literally the whole point of this channel
This is the D&D 101 channel
If you scroll down on the page here, you can see exactly what you get with the PHB:
?phb
The Player's Handbook (PHB) is an official sourcebook containing the full core rules of the game. The book is everything a player needs to create heroic characters for Dungeons & Dragons the world’s greatest roleplaying game. Some of this content is available for free as a part of the Basic Rules. Learn more: https://dndbeyond.link/discordPHB
The Basic Rules include
- 12 of the 13 classes
- 1 subclass per class
- All the base races from the Player's Handbook
- 1 Subrace per race that has a subrace option
- Almost all of the spells
- 1 Feat (Grappler)
- Some backgrounds
If you follow that link Spam shared and scroll down to the individual purchase options, that'll show you want is offered in the Player's Handbook outside of the basic rules
Which is:
- 10 backgrounds
- 28 subclasses
- 41 feats
- 2 subraces
- 57 spells
PHB looks like a must for DDB then.
I can live with that.
I'm still new to DND but I've got a couple of friends to do a campaign and they're completely new, DM is experienced but I'd like to help with like characters, anyone know of some decent premades for first timers?
If you’re creating a character on D&D Beyond, there’s a few premade characters available.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/premade
You can find a bunch here, too:
https://dnd.wizards.com/resources/character-sheets
I recently learned about the differences of a warlock, sorcerer and wizard, but are there any in game differences? As in like different spells
They do have different spell lists, yes.
There is a lot of overlap but yes, some spells some of them have but not others
Are there any different spells you might learn as a warlock depending on who you make a deal with
Yes there are list attached to the different patrons
patrons? What do you mean by that (sorry to ask)
Great old one, fiend, celestial, undead
patrons are who you make a deal with, basically
I see, celestial means stuff like outer space gods or something like cthulhu right
I would suggest reading the descriptions
Great old one - Cthulhu
I’m planning on dming so do I have to read the part in the basic rules about character creation
Celestial - angels and unicorns
yes
Why
Where can i read that?
oh wow thanks
because knowing how characters work is an essential part of the game
So you have some idea how characters work?
Ok
Have you got a copy of the free basic rules from dndbeyond?
Is the starter set rulebook different from the basic rules
I believe they're the same.
Here's the Basic Rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
Could somebody show me where i might find the move list for a warlock?
You can find their class features here, if that's what you mean by "move list".
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/warlock
You mean spell list?
yeahhh that
And the spell list here, just in case.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/class/warlock
ok thank you, I've never played dnd before but it seems pretty cool
D&D doesn't have anything called "moves," so more experienced players might not (probably don't) understand what you mean by that term.
^ did not 😅
I see, sorry for the confusion but where can i find the individual spells for different patrons? Because it says spell school but i thought warlocks have patrons instead of the schools
"Schools" of magic is a way of organizing all of the spells into the game into categories
That first link lists all the Warlock subclasses you have access to. Each Expanded Spell List will be listed under the corresponding patron.
The Fiend, for example:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/warlock#TheFiend
It's got little to do with an individual PC other than wizards who specialize in a school
Every spell in the game has a "school," because every spell in the game is categorized into one of the schools
A warlock patron expands the basic warlock spell list by several spells
You can read about the different schools here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/spellcasting#TheSchoolsOfMagic
It's not "schools" as in brick and mortar institutions, it's "schools" more in the sense of "schools of thought"
What it really is, is a way to group spells into categories/classifications
Grognerd - Great Name!
i have a question
so i only have 10 spells??? I'm really sorry this is a bit confusing
Go for it.
Please ask it
The Fiend adds ten additional spells that you can select from whenever you have the opportunity to learn a warlock spell.
ohhhhhhhhhhh
should i make a character or choose a premade one
The Fiend lets you choose from an expanded list of spells when you learn a warlock spell. The following spells are added to the warlock spell list for you.
That's going to depend on the game you're playing in
Do you have a group/game you're joining?
Is that just the fiend or does that include the other patrons too
Each has their own list.
there is one in my local library on saturdays
I see, for a warlock spell are there anythings for old one patrons like summoning tentacles and other cliche stuff, if so what school would that be in?
If you're interested in playing D&D, learning how to make a character will help you learn how to play the game. But, if you're going into a game where the DM is having you play premade characters, then you should choose one of those.
The Patron gives you 10 Extra spells - in addition to the entire Warlock spell list
Subclasses of the casters can use the list of spells from the Class and they get the bonus spells listed on the Sub Classes - my understanding
Ask the DM if you should make a character or if they provide pregenerated ones.
thx
Where can I make a character?
ill try use dnd beyond
Tentacles are a thing in a different warlock subclass, "the Fathomless," which is found in the book Tasha's Cauldron of Everything
I see... Well uh, what do you think is the coolest old one patron warlock spell
If you want tentacles, you'd probably be interested in the Fathomless warlock.
But there's also spells like Grasp of Hadar that would fit the bill. All warlocks have access to that one.
I see, like dmg said do i need to buy tashas cauldron of everything for that?
You could buy just that subclass if that's all you want.
Whatever you spend will get credited toward the cost of the book itself, too.
?tcoe
Tasha's Cauldron of Everything (TCoE) is an official sourcebook containing options for players and DMs. Learn more: https://dndbeyond.link/discordTCOE
You can purchase the subclass online only instead of the entire book - but if you are buying the hard copy, then yes
Idk, I'm sorry, but to answer your question, I'd have to sit here and read up on all of them
oh man, i'm broke and i got no job 😭
thats alright
Well, you can buy just the subclass for something like $2
if you get into a group where the DM has the books and shares them with their players, then you could get it that way also
if
I don't have a bank account yet...
Otherwise, the Basic Rules include one subclass for each class that you can use.
thats the problem
For Warlocks, that's The Fiend.
It is probably best to start with the basic class; races; and subclasses to find how to play the game before you get wrapped up in the additional things
Wow, I had a bank account from the age of 5 on
Wow, never too early I guess
it gets overwhelming if you look online at those pages that show The Best Warlock Build Guide Ever - I Swear - I really Promise This Time
If i'm correct in dnd beyond i have access to the dm's books as well correct? So if they happen to have tashas book of cauldrons or something then I can access that?
Just learn the basics with a basic character - nothing is broken on the base levels
I highly recommend just making a character as your first character rather than trying to make your ultimate character. The process of making a character helps you learn how to play the game
Provided they own the book and have content sharing enabled with the appropriate subscription tier.
If someone in the campaign has a Master Tier subscription, they can enable Content Sharing for a campaign. Once that's enabled, everyone's purchased game content gets shared with everyone else.
Yep, making one right now
Wow, is that rare to see?
i see
I own exactly 0 digital content on DnDB, I only own physical books
i have a really old dnd book from the 90's that goes for a couple hundred bucks and a few others
What book from the 90s goes for severl hundred bucks?
As in, now it is around several hundred bucks
Yeah, I got that. What book is it?
Let me go check
Actually not sure if it's the 90's somewhere around that time
FWIW, you could try checking your local library, too.
they let you borrow dnd books?
There are sometimes online PDF versions as well - though at that point, you could just buy them on DDB.
If they have them in circulation.
They let you borrow books, at least. You'll have to see whether they have those books.
But I know the libraries around here have them.
okay uh i have the book how do i describe it by any key features
The title is usually a good place to start. 😛
well to start it has the name dungeon masters guide with a red oni looking thing as the cover
There are no official PDF versions of the books. It's either physical or D&D Beyond (and various VTTs).
Yeah, that's from the 1970s
That's probably first or second edition
If it's got the red devil on it, that's 1e
Wow this is older than me by triplefold
De[ending on the printing and condition of that DMG, it could be worth $15 or it could be worth a couple hundred
is that rare
It's not rare
Hey what up
aw man it's in pretty beat up condition after years of use
Certain printings are rare and books in great condition are rare
If it's beat up, it's not worth a ton
Usually first printings of books are worth a lot more
Mine has all kinds of writing in it
I mean the pages are yellow but other than a few mistakes it looks pretty good
how do i check if it i
In book collecting, the condiiton of the book is very important in establishing its value, the rarer it is, the less the condition matters, but the 1e DMG isn't rare, unless is the first printing or something
Are the end papers white or colored?
what would be coloured
i kinda need a photo cause im not sure if youre thinking what im thinking
The end papers - when you open the cover, the paper on the inside of the cover
Im really sorry but arent they always white
Not if it's the first printing
uhhh im a bit confused
The first printing of the DMG had yellow-orange endpapers
Ah i see, not first printing then
Then it's not a collectors item. Those older ones are much rarer.
Altogether, there were 7 printings of the 1e DMG. There were tens of thousands of copies in each print run
Many, obviously have been lost to time, weather, book burnings, general abuse and over use, etc.
Ok
What should I do after I finish reading the basic rules
Are you a player or a DM?
Dm
Either pick a module or start creating an adventure.
What do you mean by a module
An officially published adventure.
Read it over, make notes on it. Then set up a group/game, either by using the LFG channels here or with people you know.
What do you mean make notes
Write down things that seem important: treasure, what NPCs know, things like that. You as the DM will develop your own sense of these things.
Ok but can’t I just read that from the booklet
You can, but it tends to work better if you know the adventure well enough to improvise. There's a bunch of YouTube advice out there on running published material; here's one video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fcjK8oXEx5I
You definitely do. That's a huge part of being a DM because players will always do things the written adventure doesn't account for.
What do I need to improvise
Descriptions of locations the players visit. What NPCs say. What players find when they search around. How things go wrong depending on their choices. Lots of things.
Ok so why do I need to know the adventure well to do that
No need to ping someone active in the conversation.
Basically, knowing the adventure lets you improvise with a purpose, toward setting up the connections between pieces and the overarching goal.
im very new and i wish i had someone to teach me

idk where i should ask this.. does a demon hunting class exist? im making a character who hunts demons, and im having trouble figuring out the best class to go with
There's no specific demon hunter class.
ah alright. i didnt think so but just wanted to make sure
You can reflavour the ranger horizon walker sub-class to be a demon hunter.
Likewise, reflavour the paladin oath of the watchers to be a demon hunter.
Bear in mind your DM is running the adventure- there is no guarantee you’ll run into a certain type of creature
True
yea, i said my character was a demon hunter and they said id be good to do that
alrighty
if he’s l agreeing to integrate ur concept, cool. Just be aware of you may not exclusively fight demons
The most on-the-nose classes are clerics or paladins

Hello
What kind of help did you need?
im trying to find a campaign to join so i went to #find-a-game and im confused
What exactly is it that has you confused?
im not sure if i do looking for community or looking for DM
Depends on what your goals are.
#looking-for-community is for community-style games, like West Marches.
im looking for a small group of people
You can post in there if you’re offering such a game, or reply to those if you’re trying to join such a game.
If you’re a player looking for a DM, you can post in #750812887697588356. If you’re a DM looking for a player, you can read through those posts and reply to any you’re interested in.
ok thx

I’m trying to find a group too play but also help me understand the game
There’s plenty of beginner-friendly games out there, but finding the right game can take time regardless of how long someone’s been playing.
Whenever you’re ready to start looking, though, #find-a-game can get you started.
Ok thank you
Oh I have another question, what are all the races players can play as, or are there different ones you can play in different games?
Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
Are the digital copies of the books like the phb from d&d beyond able to be backed up to a secondary drive for safe keeping? I never trust digital copies but the app seems to be the ticket for quick reference
It’s not a digital copy you download, it gives a key that tells dnd beyond to let you access the book on the website
You should probably read and understand the basic rules before you join a game, most DMs would much prefer to not have to teach you the rules from scratch themselves
@fleet field Oh, thank you. In that case buying hard copies doesn't make much sense I guess. Unless you really feel a need to have the on or others on a shelf.
If you want both the physical and digital copies you can buy the bundle on Wizards of the Coast online store.
yeah, I saw that but it is double the cost unfortunately
You only lease the digital books and not actually own it. That's why I own both the physical books (for when we move past 5E) and digital books (for convenience since I DM online).
I bought the starter set, are the instructions the same on the website and the set?
Yeah
The Starter Set's rule book is thinner than the Basic Rules.
Yeah, iirc the way it works is you own the rights to access the material
Not the material itself
Ok, is it expected to disappear after 5e is over. I would think buying basics like the phb and monster guide and dm guide on digital would be ok,but most others have a hard copy for recall. I'm very very new. Just started reading the basics this afternoonand just learned about backgrounds a bit
No idea what D&D Beyond will do with 5E digital book when "One D&D" comes out.
It’s not clear what’ll happen when 5e is no longer actively supported. I think that’s why some folks opt for physical, though the digital is convenient. And some can afford both.
Guess I'll be buying physical then. That'sanother part of my distrust in digital copies. Paid in full but not full rights, as offsite storage. Thank you all for the insighy
Onednd likely won’t lead to the books being removed, as they’ve stated it will have compatibility with existing 5e material
thats not how you sell more books
At least with D&D Beyond you don't need to buy the entire book if you only want access to individual playable races/classes/spells (they're about $2 each). Whatever you paid is counted against when you do decide to buy the entire digital book though.
Also, D&D Beyond has seasonal sales (about 20% to 25% off) and CyberMonday sale for $19.99 for most digital books.
Ill probably stick to physical at first and feel it out as I go. Assuming there are must have ill start there. I currently have no character or group, but the hyper fixation has begun
thank you
the main downside to phyiscal only is not being able to use the dndbeyond tools
Well, you have to manually add them in yourself as custom classes/spells/magic items.
Regarding character sheets you mean?
Yes, if you want to use D&D Beyond's online character sheets.
ok, should be fine
Thank you for all the help understanding this
any news on when 5e will end and 6e will begin?
5.5E is slated for sometime next year (no fixed release date). Next year is the 50th anniversary of D&D.
Cool thank you
So a fighter has +2 in proficiencies in All weapons.
should he determin If its a short sword, 2 handed sword or is it just + 2 in each weapon?
Wdym?
It’s just proficiency in all weapons
Idk wdym by if you should determine what it is
So All weapons he gets + 2 in.
?
Sry for bad English.
Yes
Ok thx
It’s not always +2 though
It’s your proficiency bonus which will increase over time
It says on the fighter table
It becomes +3 at 5th level
Yir i know.
I was Just thinking of he should pick a weapon for the +2, but now i see its on Every weapon 😀
So If he used a short sword and have +2 in strenght and + 2 in proficiency, he has + 4 to hit 💪
Yeah
What is the difference between basic rules and starter set rulebook
The starter set rulebook is designed to be used with the pregenerated character sheets I believe, it doesn't have rules for character creation like the basic rules do
And If he rolls 17+3 in strenght , and his a human, he gets an extra in All abilitys. So actually its 18+4?
Ok
You can read both the starter set rulebook and basic rules for free online through WoTC if you want to see for yourself
Starter Set Rulebook: https://media.wizards.com/2020/dnd/downloads/dnd_starter_rulebook.pdf
Basic Rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
Cant seem to find How far a charachter can walk in a turn.
🤔
Your characters walking speed will be listed in their racial traits under Speed
Yir i see that. Human 30 feet. 💪
But Cant see what a plate mail, reduce the speed too🤔 as ex.
You take a -10 to your speed if you're wearing heavy armor that you don't meet the strength prerequisite for
You can read more about that here, where it says Heavy Armor:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/equipment#ArmorandShields
Niiice 😀😀😀
Cant say thx enough 💪💪💪🍷
When do we use spell attack.
Cant understand the way it is descripe it in the book 😩
When you have a spell that states it requires an attack roll and want to cast it. Example: Produce Flame, Shocking Grasp, Chill touch, Witch bolt
Ok. So its actually written in the spell what it requires spell attack.
To make a spell attack, you roll your d20 and add your proficiency modifier and spell casting modifier (so wis, int or cha depending on the class), the spell will say if you need to roll one a spell attack. A ranged spell attack can be done from a distance, a melee spell attack means you need to be standing next to the target. So shocking grasp is a melee spell attack, where Produce flame is a Ranged spell attack. Both use the same modifier if you have the spells
Thank you 💪💪👌🙏
Just one last thing.
When rolling for a class, and My race is human.
Ill get +1 in All of my abillities.
So If i roll 17 its gonna be 18?
yes 🙂
Lovely. 🙏
So melee attack is str+prof bonusses to hit.
But damage is only str not proficiency bonus added?
Yep. some allow you to use Dex, but prof bonus is only added to attack rolls.
Exactly.
Im learning 😂
Use to 2nd ed rules 😂
G'day guys, I am new to DnD, my group (4) and I have never played before and have had 2 sessions using the start kit. Loving it so far.
We want to use maps for Dragons of Stormwreck Isle, are there any free ones around with a grid?
Mike Schley, who does many of the maps for D&D modules now, often has them on his site for printing for this reason: https://prints.mikeschley.com/p996068422/h26657D15#h26657d15
Not free though, if you actually want the high quality images for printing
There are also people who post maps for specific adventures on Reddit. For example here is the Stormwreck Isle subreddit
https://www.reddit.com/r/stormwreckisle
So the saving throw DC, has nothing to do with the abilliity saving throws?
Might need to explain that question.
DCs are the number to beat. For many spellcasters their spell DC is determined by calculating 8 + prof bonus + spell casting modifier. For other DCs it's a set number representing a difficulty.
To beat this, the target rolls a save. d20+ ability modifier +(If proficient, their proficiency bonus)
Assassin’s Blood (Ingested): A creature subjected to this poison must make a DC 10 Constitution saving throw.
I dont understand
😂
I just thought a saving throw was enough.
Whats the. Dc 10 gonna do?
So the DC is 10. That's the number the target needs to meet or beat.
The target rolls a Con save. This is 1d20 + Their consitution modifier + (Their prof bonus if they are proficient in con saves).
If the number they roll (Plus bonuses) is 10 or higher, they succeed on the save.
DC = Difficulty Class
Sick
Morning everyone.
Good morning.
A fine day to vibe.
Not too bad.
I assume I can only use this channel while I’m new, and none of the LFG functions?
This channel isn't for use exclusively by people who are new (otherwise how would anyone provide help and answers to newcomer questions), instead it's intended for discussing the basics of D&D and getting help with getting started
As for the game finding channels, you should follow the instructions in #find-a-game
Ah. Very good. How do I post to looking for players?
Follow the instructions in #find-a-game
Cool thx.
A lot of New things in 5th edition 🔥🔥
I will point out that DC has been around a lot longer than 5th 😛
Not in 2nd edition 😜
There were saving throws a table and you had you bonusses from abilitys.
Let's keep things on the basics of D&D fifth edition please
But actually easier this one 👍
(ie the channel topic/purpose)
I been away for a while. Has 5th edition got any upgrade for the last 2 years?
Ahh, very fair though. But yeah, instead of the old system of each player class having their own success and fail tables based on effects, 3.5 onwards to 5e just has set numbers for each effect.
Easiest way to remember is 'Meet it, beat it' for DC now.
Mordenkainen Presents Monsters of the Multiverse changed a lot.
Oh darn. Any new subclasses?
does anybody have any links to text based dnd servers?
They pop up regularly in our game channels, but they’re a little less common and they usually fill up quick.
So it’ll take some diligence to get into one.
it's like trying to find a needle in a haystack
You can visit #find-a-game to get started.
And then there is a matter of what kind of text based (play by post vs not). So may be a little rarer depending on that.
wdym by that?
Sorry i'm new, what does that exactly mean?
Some play by text may be near real time
Well, to explain, the above summarizes my thoughts on that.
Others may be more “post x times a week” and slower paced.
ohhhhh I like real time
You can also check out the #looking-for-community as some servers may have dedicated play by post channels/threads.
Real time text is a type of game I've run when several players don't speak the same common language as first language, so it is easier for them.
I see, how does that work?
You type what you were going to say. You can use a google translate to double check. Not perfect, but it works.
I see, was figuring maybe there was a translation bot
Sorry to ask but uh, would you say being a necromancer or old one patron warlock might be a good idea for my first character? Or is that a bit advanced
Necromancer and its minions can slow things down a bunch in combat. Word of warning. For a new player, this is not great.
The warlock subclass is fine.
aw man, i like stuff like necromancer
You can totally do it. Just have a way to rol large amounts of dice fast.
use a bot many times?
If you’re doing text-based here on Discord…
https://avrae.io/
oh wow thank you a lot
Ye, avrae has a lot of cool features.
as a necromancer could you do stuff like have a risen skeleton jump in front of somebodys attack to save you
Might depend on the exact spell you used.
Spell? I thought after summoning them I could just control them
I meant which spell is used to summon them.
There are multiple? Could you explain to me?
But you could potentially have the skeleton take the Ready action.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#Ready
Wow this is a lot to learn
If we’re talking about a School of Necromancy wizard, you’d most likely be using Animate Dead.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/animate-dead
Big game heheh.
I know this sounds a bit stupid, but can this be used on plants as well? Like say there's a humongous oak tree that lived to the age of 500 but died, can i reanimate that to fight for me
Choose a pile of bones or a corpse of a Medium or Small humanoid within range.
Generally no you can’t reanimate a dead tree. But a DM can make things possible if it makes sense and is fun for the group.
“Humanoid” here is referring to a specific creature type.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/monsters#Type
(“Plants” are a type of their own.)
Are there any other reanimating spells that might be able to make me do that? Or something that isnnt humanoid
Not really. Again you can check with your DM and they may find a way for you to do that but there isn’t a specific “make an undead treant” spell.
I suppose Dance Macabre requires only “corpses”, without a specific creature type.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/danse-macabre
Your plant would still use the statistics for a zombie or skeleton, per the text of the spell.
And you’d need a DM to agree that a dead tree counts as a corpse.
I see, what if it was once like a living tree
like a treant
I’d count it, but again, it probably depends on your DM.
Sorry to ask so many questions, but how are my stats of the people i revive scaled? (as in what will make them stronger and such)
Uh where do I find the rule book please?

The Basic Rules link in the post above
what does cantrips mean?
Spells that the caster basically knows by heart, and use no spell slots, kind of like level 0 spells
Weakest spells but you can basically cast as many as you like
oh i see
Is there any base dnd stuff i should know going on my first ever run as a warlock?
Focus on the game mechanics - e.g. how to make an attack roll, saving throw, and skill check. And how your character stats work. You don’t have to have it memorized but have a feel for how it works.
do the character stats work like for physical attacks i roll the d20 and add my physical stats to that
Have you read the free basic rules yet?
I would recommend giving that a review
Knowing the game mechanics (or at least being familiar with the concepts) will help you be able to play.
As an example let's say you have a level 1 fighter character with a strength score of 16 which gives you a strength modifier of +3. At level one your proficiency bonus is +2. So when attacking with a longsword you roll a d20, add your strength modifier and then add your proficiency bonus. So 1d20+3+2. The DM will compare that to the target's armor class - if your added-up roll is equal to or higher than the target's Armor Class, you hit it. The DM will then ask you to roll damage. A longsword (one-handed) does 1d8 + strength modifier slashing damage. So you'd roll a 1d8 and add your strength mod (+3) and that's how much damage you would do on a hit.
D&D is a game of rules. If you have no time to read the rules then how will you know how to play the game?
The ability modifier used for a melee weapon attack is Strength, and the ability modifier used for a ranged weapon attack is Dexterity. Weapons that have the finesse or thrown property break this rule.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#AttackRolls
If you'd rather watch than read, Handbooker Helper is a good way to learn.
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN
There is no replacement for reading the basic rules; the discord is to help, not substitute that. Otherwise we’d be here copying and pasting the book, which is not the point
i see
Download the rules to your phone and when you take you morning constitutional, or other visit to the porcelain kingdom, read up a bit. Without the knowledge, you'll never learn and without reading, you'll never fully understand
I'll find a time when to read it, currently have a lot of important tests so i'll set dnd aside for a bit
The game has been around for just shy of fifty years. It certainly isn't going anywhere!
My dad used to play it, i have one of his books from when he used to play as a DM
you dont need to read all the rules before you do anything, but the core mechanics, character creation and your class related stuff should be read
also i tried making a class and was kinda confused, it was like rick and morty stuff included? This and this included? It was all very confusing
the rick and morty adventure includes a lot of stuff for beginners, so it might have snuck into your search results?
oh you meant the character builder
yep in dndbeyond
I would say just leave those sliders to the default for now
Those are optional content that is only allowed if you DM allows them to be in their campaign.
I know im getting a bit ahead, but are all the classes easy to learn as beginners? By the way what does a monk do
Any class can be learned by a beginner.
Some are a little more involved than others, but I say just pick whatever interests you. You'll be fine.
As for monks, they focus on martial arts and the magic of ki.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/monk#ClassFeatures
Fighters, rogues, and barbarians are probably the most straight forward. They're martial classes who (except for two sub-classes) have no spells you need to learn.
Yeah, spellcasting adds the biggest complexity.
But none of it unknowable.
So if you want to be a spellcaster, do it. Have fun.
aw man, spellcasting is kinda my playstyle, guess i might start with another class first
You play whatever class you want to play. Just take the extra time to learn about that class.
ok cool 👍
The absolute simplest character you can be is a human champion fighter.
figured it would be
But not everyone wants to be a human champion fighter, and that's okay.
Learn as much as you can so you don't burden your DM by constantly pausing the game so they can explain the rules, class, and/or spells to you.
Spellcasting adds the responsibility of…reading all the available spells and picking ones to use
Cant get around it
You don't need to memorize all the rules, the rule book is there to be referenced.
I might just take a notepad or something and write a couple spells down to remember
Depending on the class, you may need to prepare spells daily
There isnt really a shortcut from knowing your classes spells, then your spells known, then those available that day…and picking the one to use at the time
What do you mean by that
Some classes pick spells and are stuck with them until a level up
And some get to pick new ones every long rest
ohhhh i see, which classes would be the ones that get to pick every long rest?
The so called prepared casters
is that a subclass
Which would be cleric, wizard, druid and Paladin I believe
No
Artificers, too.
It is a term to describe literally that, casters that have to prepare
ohhhhhhh
See Druid's "Preparing and Casting Spells" for an example.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/druid#Spellcasting-166
Oh yeah I forgot they existed
thanks a lot for helping me just trying to get a feel for the game
I should play one sometime soon
hi just a quick question my idea was to make a character who gets saved by eilistraee because of his heritage so she shows up in person and takes him to a different plane or something like that i'm not done with the details yet
how rare is it that goods interact with humanoids directly or should i use a different approach?
Honestly, that's a conversation you should have with your DM. The answer may vary depending on the campaign setting.
(And any particular god may or may not even exist.)
Hello, While I was creating a character, a person told me that there was a god/religion that gave their followers innate healing ability. This was to help me refine it's backstory to have a fighter with healing but not be a multiclass. I have had no luck finding such a thing. I am still learning any help.
I think you were misinformed. A character's faith has no bearing on their abilities in D&D.
Clerics have domains and paladins have oaths, but mechanically those do not have to be connected to any specific deity or religion.
Fighters generally don't have healing. You'll likely have an easier time making a character if you look over the class options to see what they can do and make a character from those choices.
Thank you. I was trying to see if there was a way other than the usual to get a melee with a basic heal designed as a last hope to keep someone up.
Check out the fighter's Second Wind ability. https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/fighter#SecondWind-192
It's only for themselves, though.
There are classes with martial abilities and a splash of magic, such as Paladin and Ranger
There are feats that give limited magic use
But no replacement for reading the classes and learning what they do
thanks
Also worth noting that certain race options so give you access to healing, such as the Aasimar. How you flavor your character's abilities is ultimately between you and the DM though.
so i bought the essentials kit and in my rulebook there are only a limited number of armours, weapons and items but the yt vids i watch have stuff like legendary armour or legendary sword, is that in the players handbook or is it homebred?
Other books such as the Dungeon Master's Guide have magic items. They may be homebrewed, but I suspect most YouTube videos are about the official game content unless otherwise specified.
The free Basic Rules have a limited number of magic items from the Dungeon's Master Guide (which you have to buy separately, either the physical or digital book).
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
can anyone help me start creating my character? i want to be a human conjurer.
Hello to all you beautiful People
There are subclasses that specialize in summoning stuff but i caution against starting there, it’s alot of work
Do u know any? Just so I get a general idea
Druid, circle of shepherd is potentially the strongest summoner in the game. Many summoned creatures do not have magical attacks; the shepherd druid specifically gives summons creatures magical attacks and other buffs.
Wizard, school of conjuration has features to protect you and your concentration on summoned creatures
Also, Wizard, school of necromancy…animates dead things
Interesting
None of these are beginner friendly because you are managing not only your character but the summons, which will strain you AND your DM, and worse, your table
Oh what do you recommend for newbies then to get a good grasp and learn quicker
The fighter or barbarian or rogue are the simplest to learn and get you playing quickly
Is rogue assassian styled
These classes are known as Martial classes because they use a weapon, which is much easier than learning dozens and dozens of spells and what they do
There is a subclass of Rogue called Assassin, yes
Hmm
Generally rogues are good at sneaking around
Pickpocket go crazy
That is a thing they can do, yes
What do you think when you think of fighter or berserker class?
fighter is a straightforward class and easy for a beginner to pick up
Barbarian too
berserker is a subclass of barbarian
Oops that what I mean lol
I think I’ll do fighter then
Do I just go straight away and build a fighter character?
Or do I need a dm for that
You can build a fighter yourself. Leave your backstory as more general so your DM has room to integrate it into his world
So basically the less I add the better
Not necessarily. Just make it Swiss cheese.
Enough there to give it structure, but full of holes.
You could, for example, say you’re from a far away village, without getting into the village name, size, economy, religion, etc. let your DM flesh it out according to his needs. For now, its a village and its far
You could say your parents are gone, and let your dm decide whether theyre alive, missing, etc
Heyyy- a Little new here but I want to make a human ranger class
Have you looked over the rules or visited D&D Beyond where you can quick-build a character?
So what help are you looking for, then?
A website that uses a digital sheet that’s basically like making a physical sheet
I don't know of such a thing, but someone else might.
Maybe head to #third-party-tools-archive?
Would a form fillable pdf of the character sheet work for you?
Eeeehhhh..?
D&D Beyond is also pretty neat. You can even export it to a pdf/character sheet when you’re done.
Yes that’s what I need
Uhh
@slow hawk I’ve decided to be fighter. Can I just go with all premade stuff?
Or mostly premade
What do you mean pre-made?
You mean a quick build?
Thats fine. I’d suggest going through step by step yourself to familirize yourself with the process.
Oh yeah
I’m just stumped on skill points now
Idk what benefits fighter best
Strength obviously but what else, hmm
The Quick Build says this:
First, make Strength or Dexterity your highest ability score, depending on whether you want to focus on melee weapons or on archery (or finesse weapons). Your next-highest score should be Constitution, or Intelligence if you plan to adopt the Eldritch Knight martial archetype.
strength, constitution, and dexterity are good call outs for fighters
Is constitution hp or resistence or something of the sort?
Healthiness general sturdiness
Con modifier gives you more hp.
Endurance
Constitution measures health, stamina, and vital force.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/using-ability-scores#Constitution
What’s the difference between overall stat and modifier?
Have you looked over the rules? https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#3DetermineAbilityScores
Ik how the stat things apply and all
You generate ability scores that determine the modifier. The modifier applies to the appropriate ability skill check, saving throw, and attack rolls.
So modifier is for specific situations

Does anyone know a good place to start playing dnd online. I'm playing a couple sessions a week with some friends but wanna play n learn more
Check out various Discords (many D&D YouTubers have public ones with channels to find players/games, for example), MeetUp, Facebook, forums (D&D Beyond, Demiplane, Roll20, Fantasy Grounds, EN World, RPG Geek, RPGnet), Reddit (r/LFG, r/roll20LFG, r/DnDLFG, r/LFG_Europe), StartPlaying, and Warhorn.

is there any tailored towards newbies?
or must you search for one yourself
You have to keep searching because openings get filled up very fast due to there being more players than DMs.
I built my fighter character :D
oh i see
Not all DMs have newbie-friendly games.
Don't get discourage if you don't find a table right away or things fall apart. Finding a good D&D table is like dating — there may be ghosting, drama, and rejections.
understood
do you mind proofreading my character sheet?
Sorry, I can't because I'm still at work. Post your character in #character-discussion for others to check out.
i can do it
ah ok
if theres any wonky that i can add, remove, or replace pls let me know :)
I was about to say the same.
hmm whats recommended for fighter? top 3 races?
Variant Human would be better if you really do want to be human.
whats the difference?
(Unless your only available Feat choice is Grappler. 😅)
depends on your focus
what does variant do that is different
i want to be a two sword weilding badass
well, one axe and one sword ideally
i'd say take variant human and the dual wielder feat
extremely tough and strong but also strategic. not too good with social or charisma
variant human allows for a feat and asi instead of a +1 to everything
oh understood
if i put both into strength, does it overcap?
wait nvm that sounds dumb
As for why you’re not getting much from human is that generally even-numbered ability scores are the best place to start. Your modifier for that ability only increases on even numbers.
i used a quick build and then added some items ; only to later find out, the AI already did that with the quick build. bad play on my part
With the regular human’s +1 to everything, it’s turning most of your already-even scores into odds. You wouldn’t be able to capitalize on that until much later.
ill make note to remove it
you should change your fighting style to two weapon fighting if you plan on dual wielding, dueling won't be helpful
dual and duel… didnt even notice that thank you
i have grappler and firearm, which is better
nvm ill judt go grappler
Your DM may or may not even allow firearms. I wouldn’t pick that until you know.
And I wouldn’t pick Grappler at all, personally. At that point, I’d just pick another race. 😅
The latter, yeah.
so thats just a thing to always check, even skill numbers, thx
so i equip everything i need, then i go on a journey
haha thats cool
and i can pick anything i want to add? rlly?
Generally your starting equipment is based on your class and your background.
Anything else is typically found or purchased in-game, yeah.
thx!
hey what would happened if i equipped everything? no downsides?
(the weight of my equipped items is less than my characters weight ofc)
armor causes disadvantage on stealth
no just fighters
Every fighter does.
also think it's funny just to witness yet another human fighter be created
nice!
is that like a stereotype 💀
it's the most common class and race combination
gad dayum
well
im a newbie so i need to learn before i do other mix and matches
back to basics for me
but how does my sheet look now? decent?
yeah human fighter's are typically a player's first character
Its fine for a beginner
oh no doubt about that
im planning on ending on a conjurer/summoner route
oh new room posted brb
nvm gotta be lvl 20 💀
fighter's don't particularly go that route
that's more of a wizard thing
i mean with another character
I wouldn’t recommend starting at level twenty for a new player, but you can always just set the sheet to level 20 on Beyond.
when i become more seasoned
nah i wont do that
whats the best game style for newbies?
what do you mean by style?
4] Game StyleNot Set - Some information about what sort of game you are looking (e.g. roleplay heavy, hack'n'slash, political intrigue, horror, etc.). This could include what edition of D&D you play, or how you feel about homebrew!
[5] Preferred Way to PlayNot Set - How would you like to play? Video over a specific chat service? Text only? Play by post? Using Discord/DDB/A
the 4 thingy
do i just put Online/Beyond?
well the game you want to play is heavily dependent on you though I wouldn't recommend homebrew for a first campaign
whatre the different styles
i prefer a good balance of roleplay and combat though others in my group prefer more roleplay so we end up doing that which i'm fine wiht
There's no agreed-upon set of terms.
If you're posting an ad, just describe the kind of game you think you'd enjoy. If you're searching through the ads and need clarification, ask the person who posted to elaborate.
not quite sure what that means, a bit vague, perhaps more specific?
i want it to sort of be like LOTR 💀
Lots of build up with minor fights and character conflicts
and it all leads to a big bad fight
Then maybe include that, instead of a handful of words trying to do the heavy lifting.
Id like a long journey that leads up with a secret villain or force of some sort, but the players only know glimpes and hints of whats to happen. As the story progress, they start to understand the pattern of the attacks of minions and armies are targetted towards them as the players go on towards whatever goal they must reach. Probably more likely than not, theres some wise spirit or magitress of some sort that nudge the players to walk down the path in the first place that sort of kicks the journey
how good is this, too much?
that's a bit more of an specific storyline thing that a dm might not be going for
maybe something like a 60/40 roleplay to combat mystery campaign with an culmination bbeg fight
I would suggest trying to identify the most important parts of the kind of game you'd like to play: a big mystery to unravel? Exotic locations? Intense combat? Something else? You can't have everything, so maybe limit it to a few.
intense combat and big mystery seem good, is two too much?
I wouldn't think so. Also, no need to reply to a specific person when they are participating in the conversation.
Good luck!
finally submitted, i feel nervous 😭
Helloo
Is there a way to see a list of available games so I could apply?
Will that provide me with a list of DMs to contact?
There's no list, just postings.
Where can I see the posts?
channels i listed
I do not see these channels on the left in the channels register.
There are way more players than DMs, so you're not likely to be chosen at random. Better to reach out to anyone whose game sounds appealing.
they are hidden, you must click on the tags provided and add them to the server list manually
You may need to mess with your settings in the id:customize channel. Sometimes people don't choose to see the whole server.
i'm planning on running a level 4 one shot at some point so I could dm for a group of 4-5
most of them are homebrew, what should i look out for as a newbie?
probably a tier 1-tier 2 campaign from levels 1-5 that's just raw
is it good if a newbie cough cough could join or is that too advanced
I would ask what homebrew they use/permit. A homebrew world is no big deal; homebrew mechanics are a different story.
you could join, it's a play test
wow rlly do i have to sign up or dm you? :o
most of them look too high leveled… best not to touch it now
ill put a thing in the looking for players
🫡TY
hi! i dunno if this is where im supposed to go or not LOL im not too new but im making a paladin and have never played one before so i kinda wanted a general run down of they work? like gameplay wise at least!
probably go to #character-discussion ?
Smite the heretics
I didn't even peep that, many thanks!
All g
The start of each classes description in the basic rules has some good flavor text for the kinds of characters that fit it
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/classes#Paladin
thank you!
hey everyone, I'm super new to D&D...looking to see if I can join a group, probably as a player first. I'm playing by myself so I wasn't sure about using the looking for dm command. suggestions?
Do you know the basic rules?
Yes I believe so. I tried playing a super short beginner campaign with family once, and I DMed, but wasn't sure I did it right. Also just bought the Adventure Begins boardgame to play with my kids. But wanna learn properly in an adult game.
The adventure begins isn't gonna help much with learning 5e, but it's still fun!
?new here are some resources we have to help you get started.
Thanks, I'll do the demo. I've already got a couple characters ready, and looked for a group to join. I suppose now I just wait!
My biggest suggestion for finding a group is to be proactive. Making a post in looking for dm is a decent start, but I would search through #looking-for-players as that's where dms post their games that need players in. Cast your net wide and be patient!
And if you have questions, don't be afraid to ask!
Thanks so much for the warm replies! Tbh I was afraid to even try to start playing, but hoping it'll all work out.
Have fun!
anybody have any text based dnd servers
#looking-for-players or #looking-for-community and look for play by post or text based
guys what does it mean by milestone and xp in the character builder im kinda new
xp means that if you have a certain amount xp you level up and milestone is just whenever the dm feels like it
what's encumberance?
doesnt it explain in dnd beyond?
i feel like there should be a way to check it in the site
Use the standard encumbrance rules / Disable the encumbrance display / Use the more detailed rules for encumbrance
like being encumbered by weight
like the maximum amount of weight you can carry
ah i see
Have you had a look at the basic rules yet?
uhhh nope, making my character first
probably best to skim them at least lol
huh wait so i can only pick a fiend as a warlock unless i pay money? Man that sucks
dexterity basically means stamina/hitpoints correct
You can buy the other subclasses for $2 a piece on the DDB marketplace
Constitution is hit points
Dexterity is basically avoiding damage and determining hits and damage of ranged attacks, and stuff like acrobatics and sneaking
an acolyte is something like a scholar correct? Or a follower
Starting at 14th level, when you hit a creature with an attack, you can use this feature to instantly transport the target through the lower planes. The creature disappears and hurtles through a nightmare landscape.
At the end of your next turn, the target returns to the space it previously occupied, or the nearest unoccupied space. If the target is not a fiend, it takes 10d10 psychic damage as it reels from its horrific experience.
Once you use this feature, you can't use it again until you finish a long rest.
wow thats a pretty cool passive
its not a passive bro its an active
whats a book of lore
quick question after finishing choosing my equipment can i just go to the next bit
A lot of the backgrounds include items that are just there for roleplaying. In this case, the book could be on just about any subject. You can talk to your DM if you have a specific idea or if you want to brainstorm a subject.
or do i click this thing saying add starting equipment
hey i made my first character www.dndbeyond.com/sheet-pdfs/Shibe88_101122474.pdf
crazy how that doesnt work
i mean i put it into google and it works
is there any more to do? I cant go any further
In the character Sheet View in the Page you Need to navigate to the spells and Pick your warlock spells
Choose spells, equip weapons and armour
character sheet view? Where is that
oh i think i see
So how exactly do i pick my spells?
as in im already at the spells page thingy in the character sheet
ohhhh i see it nevermind
wow this game actually seems really fun, just reading the spell descriptions is fun
You See, Just klicking through the Char creation is Not wrong, but for Most parts you should try to find a group to Play with.
Most DMs have restrictions, and can Help you with fitting your Char better in the planned Story.
Also coordination with other Players on char creation is Key.
I personally try to avoid having 2 Player Characters (PCs) in a group that Play too similar. Everyone Being able to contribute to the Quest sucess is a big Part of the fun. Be it in Combat, roleplay or investigation
i see thank you
where can i do that?
Inventory tab
and i just click on the square things to equip them?
Yep
so do i just equip everything
i dont see why you wouldnt
and how do i save what i've made changes to
You equip what you are directly wearing at that time. So Armor, weapons, options etc
Some people equip only the weapons they have in hand, for example.
also sorry for asking so many questions, but i have four spells i pick right? 2 cantrips and 2 known
It's automatic.
The Webpage should autoapply any Update you make
cause on the page thing it was like cantrips 1/2, known spells 1/2
2 is correct.
The Warlock Table shows how many spells you should know at each level.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/warlock#TheWarlockTable
oh ok, what are spell slots?
can you be a gunslinger?
Yes. Cantrips you can Cast as often as you want. See it as your "Autoattack"
Leveled spells Need a resource called spellslots and you have precious few of them. By using Magic you alter the Weave, so basically reality around you. And you can only do that a Set number of Times per dax
So, I can know lots of spells, but only use some of them?
Well except for as warlock, it is your Patron granting you this Power Not your own will, and you can "recharge" this lend Power on a short Break (short Rest)
No that is the wizards Class gimmik
oh i see, so i get to pick the spells i use for the certain amount of time until my next short/long rest?
As warlock you know precious few spells your Connection to your Patron.
So the 4 spells you picked These are the spells your Patron Grants you knowledge of
Oh I see
But to actually Cast the 2 spells of 1st lvl you Need to expand the resource called pactmagic slots
These you can regain on a short rest
Like medidate to Connect to your Patrons Power or whatever fits your backgroundstory
So what you're saying is is that the pact magic slots are like how many times i can use those spells, somewhat like an energy source, and i replenish that after taking a short rest?
Yes
ohhhhhhhh okay, by the way does mana exist in dnd
And you have a Set contrack about what Secrets the Patron provides you with. And in lvl Up you can basically make small alterations to that Pact (switching Out acspell) in Addition to gaining the next Levels festure
Spellslots basically replace mana
I see, so do i have quite a lot of pact magic slots or do i need to sleep a lot
Well there is a reason all These mems depict warlocks Being short Rest junkies
You have very little pactmagic slots
So your Base Attack is the cantrips
ohhh right cantrips are infinite basically
How can I send a message into looking for DM?
And you can See your Pact Magic as a sort of Nuke, or ultimate you only use when it is Worth it (or when you know its napping time soon)
I think i got some pretty good spells for my starting ones, i got chill touch, eldritch blast, command and hellish rebuke
Ummmm i think i accidentally used my hellish rebuke?
For free games.
Cause i clicked cast pact slot in an attempt to change my hellish rebuke
Just click it again.
uhhhh still shows 0
Ah sry wrong Channel now it should be the right one
Eldritch blast and chill Touch both are ranged dmg spells. An Option would be to only Pick one of them and use your secound one for more variety. Like a saving throw spell Like toll the dead or a utility spell Like magehand
hmmm I see
so how exactly do i change it
You can short rest.
You should be able to edit the remaining Slots manually somewhere
(Not Sure where i dont use d&d beyond Sheet that often)
Otherwise just click on that square that says "Pact".
help how do i change my spells i want to change one of them
Manage spells, and then known spells If i remember correctly
ah ok thank you
Then you should be able to remove current ones and Pick another
by the way whats a saving throw/ saving throw spell
Attackroll: you Roll a dice and DM tells you If you hit
Saving throw: you Annonce you Cast the spell then DM Rolls a save for the Monster and tells you If they fail
Some enemies can have very high Armor Class (AC), so are hard to Hit, but Low Bonus to their saves so are likley to fail.
what would you recommend for some variety of cantrips or a utility spell
I'd at least recommend something other than two ranged attacks.
You could swap one for a melee attack or a utility spell.
Eldritch Blast as Main damage. Toll the dead as Potential "Backup"
Magehand, prestidigitation ,Minor Illusion are great utility cantrips
i don't see toll the dead
Ah
Its from an Expansion book
Nvm then
Frostbite or create Bonfire is an option
But i would Pick an utility spell over frostbite tbh
actually what about poison spray
anyone wanna call with me and my friend and chat?
