Dndbeyond
Or roll20
It’s in the resources posted up above, but here’s the link:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/builder
Note that unless you purchase the books or other content you can still make characters for free, but you’ll only have access to what’s in the free basic rules.
Okkk. Tysm. Oop. I need to pay to look at the books? Would watching the YT playlist be a better route?
Try maybe posting in #750812887697588356 , you don’t gotta DM and they aren’t AI
Everything you need to play is in the basic rules. The playlist does a good job of breaking it down, but it only pulls from the basic rules.
The other books just provide additional options for customizing your character or running a game, but they are not necessary to play.
Ahh ok. Ok, so I can just create a cool character?
Without really needed to know? Or is there specific info i should know?
Yup! If you’re making it without a DM or a game my recommendation is make it how you want, but consider it practice. Every DM runs their game differently, character creation included.
Maam. It’s maam.
No it’s an expression
Huh!! Ok. Cool.
Nvm sorry
Oh ok. No no your good
Didn’t mean to be rude
Tysm @dapper gulch I will pratice making my character then waiting a couple mins before I find a game.
I’m aoooo excited to find out if I. Like dnd or not. I really hope I do
I’ve been wanting to learn for a solid couple years. Sadly there’s no one irl that I could play with.
Finding a group that matches your schedule is honestly the hardest part about playing. I actually manage and run a small community that hosts public tables in my area for that reason 😅
We play in person.
should i get the starter set or the essentials kit or both
Ohhhh.. insteresting. Y’all like friends or did you meet up from here? You don’t need to answer this if you don’t feel comfortable:$)
Are you planning to DM?
Hey
Dm means dungeon master right?
Sup
yes
Someone took the initiative to get it started. I showed up. Then we became friends and now we’ve got 20+ people that show up for game night.
Hi imnew
Are the players new?
:0 that’s so cool

yes
I just heard about this game yeasterday
Very cool
One of those, I forget which, has Lost Mines of Phandelver in it. That’s free in D&D Beyond, so I don’t recommend buying that set since you can get it free.
IMO get the starter set
And I decided to search it up on play store
Yes LMoP is startset
I am new
it used to be but now its dragons of stormwreck isle
What's that I'm curious
I just created haisenburger and aime black as charecters
thats the name of a campaign
Oh
Oh cool lol
How do you send the link to the campaign?
??
How do you create ob mobile too
so which one should i get
I searched up how to create campaign but it was for pc
My campaign is called Lynx Army
If you use dnd beyond you can
I get class do you recommend I do? @dapper gulch
Let’s keep things family-friendly, please.
Ok
They’re all great. Take a glance at each one and pick the one that seems cool to you.
Ok :))
How do you send the link to the campaign as a gamemaster
If you manage to do it can I join the game
Heads up! It’s generally rude to solicit an invitation from someone not actively recruiting players. And for that, there’s #looking-for-players
Is this a DnDBeyond campaign link? The link to the campaign should show up at the top right.
but also do use direct message or the proper channels for organizing a game.
No worries
No problems. Just letting you know.
Otherwise all the other channels would be filled with people going “LFG 👀???”
Ok! So I found 2 games- it’s text so PERFECT!!just gotta hope I can join
#looking-for-community there is some french here ?
Possibly - those servers tend to be more global with players from all over. Many run games 24/7 depending on whos available and ready to play.
Am I in trouble? Or did you all jjsf do that random emoji??
Trouble for what?
Nvm then 😂🤷♀️
A D20 react is usually a good sign - "Nat 20! Critical hit!"
Ooooo ok cool
(Please note I can’t make someone in trouble - I’m not a mod)
In new so I’m learning, I got 2 games only looking to join 1 tho, so hopefully the ppl answer
I think many of us are excited that you found two possible games that could work for you!
and I am a mod but I don't like having to get people in trouble so I like it when folks follow the server rules and treat other nicely and respectfully even if they disagree on things
Yeaaa. I don’t like v-c I now that I know a text play exusits. I prefer that. And there both a gif
*fit
pbp is super dope thanks to how it lends itself to asynchronous play. People across time zones can interact as much or as little as they want.
Very cool

The quick-start guide below explains how to find a game here on our server. Check out #find-a-game for the channel rules, FAQ, and off-server game options.
• #750812887697588356 has players who are ready to join a game.
• #looking-for-players has unpaid DMs offering a traditional D&D experience: a single party playing together through a shared adventure.
• #looking-for-community has free community-style games like West Marches, One-Shot locators, and more. These are easy to join and regularly active, but you might play with different people each session.
• #paid-looking-for-game has games that require payment to join. These games might offer a more professional DM experience or more consistent participation.
The best place to start is by replying to the messages that have already been posted. You can use the thread attached to the post or send the user a direct message.

Hello
Welcome!
thnx
As a DM how do you get to know potential new players?
Do you find it's better to kind of interview them? Play a one shot with them and see how they are in person?
I thought about making a google form for new players to kind of prompt them into topics, but it seemed silly/formal
Having a form can be a good way to help filter out folks that you'll not likely align with, but yeah just spending time and chatting with them. Maybe play a one-shot (self contained, short D&D game) with them to see how they play at the table. Basically utilize your normal "get to know you" social skills and see how well you connect with them.
Hello is 14 too low to play Online DnD? Like does most of the community see it as OK or should i be more cautious about game requirements
You can play D&D at almost any age! It's just a matter of finding the right group.
A lot of groups will try to have players around the same age/stage of life to help everyone mesh well together, but that's certainly not a requirement.
That said, I would recommend to not lie about your age - it doesn't really work when you're trying to gel with your team mates.
How exactly does DM work? Do they get to come up with their own stories and stuff? I just want a general explanation of what they do as I plan on playing a game with some of my friends and we have never played before.
DMs can either use prewritten adventures, like the ones WotC publishes, or make up their own worlds/adventures.
If you're a new DM, I highly recommend starting off with a prewritten adventure, such as the Lost Mine of Phandelver (which is free with all D&D Beyond accounts). That adventure was written for new players and DMs in mind.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/lmop
Thanks much appreciated
hey are there any dm's who can add a mafia into the world
DMs can do anything to their campaign setting.
sweet
Thieves' guilds has been a thing since the beginning of D&D
Hey! I was curious if there are any groups/people interested in learning and practising the rules of dnd? I am super interested in playing, but being able to learn or be taught would make integration so much more capable
Have you read the basic rules?
I know most of the basics, but there are some aspects that I haven’t wrapped my mind around yet. And, of course, I’ve never had the chance to put any of my knowledge to practise
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
hello im new, i just started d&d and i decided to DM a campaign but my players don't seem to be vary interested in it, do you have any suggestions to help me spice it up?
Is it a homebrew adventure or a prewritten one?
Perhaps we should bring this over to #dm-discussion to avoid potential spoilers
ok
I'm gonna start with a pre-made adventure to make it easier
I got one called "Tomb of Annihilation"
That's a big one lol
Just make sure the players know that their characters may die (easily).
If you want a chat full-spoilers, there's always #1029835597168267384.
I'm aware
I should have them make extra characters
I always try to have spare characters.
Hi everyone. Joined the Discord a couple weeks ago or so. I'm still new-ish to D&D. Hoping to find new friends with similar interests.
Welcome!
Hi!
Brand new to dnd, hoping to find some people who can show me how to play (I'm not a visual learner so reading tutorials doesnt help much)

Which bits you struggling with?
The game is about rules so regrettably you'll have to read.
Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
like I said, brand new so I don't really know. and learning by trial would work better for me
I've seen gameplay so I have a basic idea of how to play.
so i guess brand new is a lie
Do you have a local game store near you?
I dont think so
Hi! Just joined the server with a friend, we're both fairly new to D&D and hope to meet some more friends willing to help us learn how to play better as well as find DMs offering games (:
https://locator.wizards.com/ a lot of store can be found here
none of them do dnd
Go to one ask around, YouTube is a good way to learn the basics, https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLQMqiULo_05P90SzHdyyVIcz4TGZApQ5L basics for character creation
I don't see why it would be such an issue to do a trial game or two to learn
Because not all DMs are wiling to teach new players who didn't bother reading the rules and have to teach them the fundamentals from scratch.
There are DMs out there though but you have to try to find them.
Guess I gotta look for those people then
The more you learn about the game (by reading the rules) the more likely you'll find a game.
You’re welcome to look through our game-finding channels to see if there’s one that suits your needs.

Hello, I'm a new DM although I haven't played any dnd much. I've only started one game and then two players quit 😦
i have a q, are there no voice channels in this server ? plus do they play dnd ?
There are no voice channels here nor do people play on this server. If you want to find games, check out the #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community channels.
I know how warlocks work, but I don't really understand why they get so many spells known, for so few spell slots. Can somebody explain the balance of that?
They’re effectively a “build your own caster” class, so that with the invocations gives you a lot of customize ability.
Like I know they have invocations and pact features, but for example at lvl 10 they know 10 spells, while only being able to cast 2 per short rest

hi, i wanna play as a goblin. Ideally i want to fight with a short bow and two daggers, kind of fighter like and kind of sneaky, what class should i pick for that?
Probably a rogue. There's lots of options but I think you'd really enjoy the options to really bump up your Stealth skill and having access to the Sneak Attack feature. ✌️
thanks for the quick reply, say i wanted to theoretically climb on an enemy, what skill would i need for that? probably acrobatics, right?
i played a scout in dragons dogma and i really loved the playstyle 😂 so im trying to recreate it if i can lmao
Probably! Very specifically, the DMG (Dungeon Master's Guide) as a small section on "climb onto a bigger creature". It basically says to treat a "suitably large" opponent as terrain - which actually keeps it pretty vague.
Fighters and rangers have Two-Weapon Fighting style. However, rangers can be proficient with Stealth.
As far as climbing something that's just kind of bigger than you? Typically that'd be considered a grapple. But your DM can work with you on how exactly it could work based on what you're going for. ✌️
Climbing is typically an Athletics check. That said, it's up to the DM if you can climb a larger creature (aka "Rule of Cool")
ahhh alright and that would then be an athletics check, right?
ohh what is acrobatics for then?
Your DM may say otherwise. Their call.
okay gotcha
Yup! The rulebooks give the DM a bit of guidance and most would point towards an athletics check (for climbing). But given other circumstances (and the idea that we want to enable players to do cool things), we might instead let an acrobatics check work for "climbing a monster" - especially if that character is maybe better acrobatics vs athletics. ;)
But in the end, yeah, talk to your DM and see what makes the most sense for the table.
Anyone able to teach 5th gen?

Hi, is there no longer an art channel?
I got a lot of notes to make it seems
is the best way for a new player to D&D Beyond to find an adventure/campaign to check the Looking for players channel and find a post that fits to timezone day days of week played and respond accordingly?
If you're looking for online games, that's as good a method as any, though you should cast the net wide. There are plenty of sites to find other players and DMs.
Let me fully get the dice rules and everything and I'll start doing that
How do they play D&D online though?
I assume this question has been asked a million times, but idk how to get over being nervous abt talking with strangers in DnD in voice chat
Also I think I want to DM if thats relevant
You need a method to communicate as a baseline. This article is a good primer for how to play online. https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/750-new-players-guide-how-to-play-d-d-online
@tribal loom Check your DMs, you mentioned balance, so I've made some spreadsheets
That won't be an issue
Greetings all. I am a bit of a D&D noob.. I know the basics of the game and how to play it.. but I have a few questions that I hope yall might be able to help me with..
- as a DM, how do yall chose monsters that are based on the players level?
like If i go through the monster manual.. and pick a random monster.., how do i know it's going to be something my players can go up against
with out them getting smashed to pieces
All monsters have a Challenge Rating associated with them. It is roughly the level a party of four players can handle (so a CR 4 creature is a reasonable challenge for a level 4 party). There's a lot more information in the Dungeon Master's Guide for how to calculate the challenge for a given set of monsters. There are also online tools like Kobold+ Fight Club and Kastark to help with that process as well.
You could always join a text game if you don’t want to voice chat.
I don't know that I have a good answer, but I don't think the nervousness is something you get over and then become able to talk to strangers. I think you push through it to do it anyway despite being nervous. (I get nervous about things I've done literally hundreds of times, but I still manage to do them.) I believe that the feelings lessen with time and repetition, even if they don't go away entirely.
ahhh ok i see the Monster stat by CR table on page 274 of the DMG
Yeah, somewhere around page 80 or so is the information about building encounters.
now i just need to learn how to calculate the CR of a monster
ohhhhI never noticed on a monsters tables it says Challenge __
The existing monsters all have a CR listed in their statblock.
I just now learned this
lol
And you can use D&D Beyond’s Encounter Builder to calculate the difficulty for your party.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/encounter-builder
is the XP listed next to it.. the amount of XP it will give to the players if they defeat the monster?
awesome. Ill take a look now
Each monster has an XP value based on its challenge rating. When adventurers defeat one or more monsters — typically by killing, routing, or capturing them — they divide the total XP value of the monsters evenly among themselves. If the party received substantial assistance from one or more NPCs, count those NPCs as party members when dividing up the XP. (Because the NPCs made the fight easier, individual characters receive fewer XP.)
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dmg/running-the-game#ExperiencePoints
ahhhhhhh ok ok ok .. I get it now
The DMG: worth reading, but not all at once.
I need to look around more on D&D beyond then
Ya Ive been reading through it over time... and the PHB and the MM
it's a lot to digest
The books are meant to be referenced; you don't need to commit them to memory. But it is good to know what they contain.
i appreciate yalls help very much. I recently joined this discord and started getting hype about D&D... its definitely a lot to take in.. but Im learning
I joined a local Game lounge and will be playing as a player a lot more... but I have some friends that im playing with that Im the DM for (Dragon of icespire peak) only because Im the only one that has any experience playing D&D
Nice. I find being a player helped me DM and vice versa.
ya we are about to run Curse of Strahd at the game lounge. Pretty excited for it.
if i use the Quickened spell metamagic option, can I attack with a weapon first then cast a spell ?
what do you want to know ?
Nd my frnds did have like a lil campaign we wanted to try. But since we all are new i don't excatly know how it works.
Is the app just for reading abt those slells nd creating campaigns or is there anything more than that?
Nd also can we not type in the campaign option is the dice roll only permitted?
Hey guys I’m new to dnd and just joined this server; where would I go to join a dnd campaign.
I created a elven fighter
Thx
Yeah i did read a lil. I pretty much understand how they work. Or ig i do . I don't know if i do or not untill i actually join a campaign
yeah, DnDB doesn't provide a Virtual Tableop like Roll20 or Foundry, you generally use it to see your cs
you can have a look in #looking-for-players
Okay
it's full of DMs desperately wanting players
Will i be able to create one like that?
one what ?
Attilus ru looking for players
If am the dm how to i post a msg in lookingforplayers
I am but i can't play rightnow thou.
What time then?
Am not really sure. Maybe around 10IST
Just tell me how long that is from now
you might want to read pins in #looking-for-players
If you don't mind we can DM and play
Sure
Hey can i get with ya too?
It's 2 nd a half hours from now.
Thankyou
Ooh I think I might be still awake to attend that. It will start 1230 where I’m from but I might still be awake
Just call me whenever ur ready
@plucky tiger Sure. Thanks.
U wannna try and find a campaign to join while we wait
Yeah
But it's past midnight here, then I would have to go to sleep too
This time difference sucks
Yeah I understand. Hopefully we could find some people to join before hand
Maybe @plucky tiger and @elfin rampart can play now.
@plucky tiger you don't have to wait for me.
Ok
Yeah 👍🏻
8 or 9 hours from now!?
Yeah
K then
I just finished my character sheet on dnd and beyond could anyone give any pointers if anything’s wrong
You can post the link in #character-discussion

What is ASI? On the dnd beyond character sheet
Ability Score Improvement
Im new to dnd and i wanted to know if you can mix two races??
There are half-elves and half-orcs as official playable races. Anything else you will have to ask your DM on using Custom Lineage.
This is up to your DM if they will allow it.
alright thanks for the help!
Hi i want to play though it will be my first time, can anyone teach me 🤟

Yes
Today i woke up and went "i wanna play dnd"
How would you do "edgy" right
Self consciousness?
I want to play a Phantom Rogue but it feels like the ultimate edgelord
Probably that, also probably make your character quiet, someone who'd keep to themselves unless needed. Describe your rp in detail, such as actions like:
He lifted the black, torn cloak that covered half of his body to reveal a sheathed dagger in his leather belt. "Don't test me," he said. "Unless you wanna end up as dead meat, I suggest you flee."
Something like that, I guess.
Makes sense
Edgy to me is a cousin of 'cringe'. It's the feeling of someone trying to achieve an emotion or result (Serious issues, dark topics for edgy, general 'coolness' for cringe) but, in the eyes of the viewer, failing to reach that and thus being embarrassing.
So 'Edgy' characters can be very subjective. If you want to have a darker themed character you can- you can either play it non seriously, lean into the 'edge' and just enjoy, or it's possible to pull off those topics with maturity and actually reach the desired levels of seriousness and 'coolness'.
So basically- don't worry too much if a class and race combo or even backstory seems 'edgy' if it always seems like it'll be fun and you think you can pull it off- or don't even care if you can pull it off, just play it.
how can i play as a bear in DnD beyond???
A bugbear, or you can be a Druid and wild shape into a bear or cast polymorph to turn into a bear
ok, thanks i've been wondering for a while
(Bugbears are neither bugs, nor bears, just tall fuzzy goblin peeps) >.>
There is no bear race but you could make your own with custom lineage
Kobold Press has a bear race in the Midgard Heroes Handbook
See if your DM will allow the Bearfolk from the Midgard Heroes Handbook (Kobold Press)
And that would be #homebrew I was giving advise on using the base game rules to keep it simple
More #third-party I'd think, but yeah. Generally I don't suggest third party options unless someone is asking for something which is in a third party option but not in the WotC options. And Kobold Press is one of the better third party outfits
I'm playing a tabaxi wizard in a campaign who uses school of necromancy and most of its spells. I asked DM for permission and it's fine but what is a good way to hide a character's evil side. He plans to work with the group until the time is right.(whilst subtly making things harder with ray of enfeeblement. Along with others.)
Basically what I'm asking is what's a good way to not give myself away too easily?
Youre using your spells on the party?
Just to make this clear: your DM is on Board with your Char beztaying the Party?
Two thoughts in this:
- Dont expect that you "win". The Game has to Go in afterwards, so you will have to make a new Char at that Point and your betrayer Char becomes an NPC
- Be aware of the possibility that the Game Ends when you Backstab the Party, cause If handeled poorly by the DM the other Players will leave the group, and Not in a Well behaved way but more a really salty ragequit way.
Inter-PC conflict often results in a group self-destructing unless you get buy-in from the other players
They said it's fine and I will drop various hints that my character isn't entirely on their side. My character is a worshipper of a villain. So they'll have plenty of chances to work out my character isn't good. I'll be subtle but not make it impossible.
As long as they agreed...sounds fun. 🙂
as for hiding your spellcasting, there isn't a lot of ways to do that. You can do it with (metamagic) Subtle Spell.
But, you'd have to take Sorcerer levels or a feat to do that.
Also my character is basically jafar because he has a snake of python which requires blood to use.
You might be able to use stealth to hide while spellcasting, that is up to your DM though
Nothing that damaged but more hinders slightly whilst using the main stuff on actual enemies.
Maybe then Shadow sorcerer would Work better than necromamcy wizard
I got plans already with necromancy wizard and wizard seems more fun to me.
Yeah using your spells to mess over your party isn’t gonna go well
This needs to be brought up at session 0 with everyone so everyone is on board
They said this has already happened.
here ^
Sorry Shinx, didn't mean to ping you, forgot to turn that off when I replied to the passage for Ratty.
DM is fine what about the other players
The spell failed but the character died anyway because of the situation.
Just from reading it you can guess what kinda things I could do with my wizard.
I'm going to play my char during the fight.
So should I tell the players about my plan for my character or should I just drop hints in character?
I’d tell them if you started casting harmful spells at me I’d leave the group
But I don't want them to suddenly just kill my character and meta game it so I can't do a plan that's been discussed with the DM.
Is there a way of doing a villainous character well that wouldn't make players mad?
Yeah don’t attack or nerf the other players or have a table that is comfortable with that play style
Would having my character lie about a cursed item. Like if I arcana check and it's cursed but I don't tell them what it does?
Yes you can do that
Would anyone like to pop in to a newbie-friendly one-shot game in 30 mins? One player just called in sick
@velvet radish I guess I can.
What other ways can I do things that wouldn't really impact them too much? That wouldn't really annoy too much.
Talk to your party cause different tables will put up with different stuff
What you are doing can destroy a gaming group UNLESS you get players to agree beforehand. Get their agreement.
Search youtube for Matthew Colville, he has a video called "The <insert word here I cannot say on this server> Defense"
It is a good video regarding the pitfalls of PC vs PC behavior.
Should I say it out right or should I say something about my character's alignment to be chaotic neutral/chaotic evil?
You should get their buy-in....Matthew Colville discusses that in his video
they may even have ideas for you to take your idea even further
hello! ive never played d&d before, i wanna learn if anybody wants to sit down with me and teach me a bit, i have dice.
Like my inspiration for this was a Robert green viva la dirt league character. It seemed like the PC's didn't mind it.
No idea what that reference is a reference to.
Our dm is refusing to acknowledge that we cant heal a person with the med kit we conjured with minor conjuration. So can you conjure med kits, poisons, grenades with minor conjuration that serve its purpose and isnt just for show?
can or cannot heal a person?
Can*
Sorry
Well, there is nothing in the rules covering whether or not consumable items work properly or not. It sounds like your DM is going with the idea that "if the effect isn't permanent then the effect of the item isn't either". Not sure I agree with that but.... this is ultimately a problem with your DM that you need to resolve with them.
I sent you a link to the video.
I am sorry, I am not in a position to watch videos at this time.
Our dm is insisting that we can only make the basic structure with minor conjuration
Robert green is their DM and he's pretty good.
Your DM may have a basis in the rules for that. The DMG defines an object as a discrete item, not an item composed of many objects.
Where that line is drawn is up to your DM
If your character concept comes at the cost of other players’ fun without their consent, then you need to come up with another character concept. Every table is different.
As an example, I straight up tell newcomers to my groups that there is no PvP unless all parties involved agree first.
@lime violet Ultimately, as I said, this is a conversation you should be having with your DM. But once they make the final ruling then that is really as far as you can take it. I wouldn't continue to argue the point with them.
If you really dislike how the DM is running things your choice is to play or not play with that DM.
Is this how I should ask?
I wanted to make sure people would be okay with this but my character isn't on the party's side and should've asked previously but would you guys be okay with a character who is helping for their own gain and hasn't gotten the best intentions?.
Thats a good start Shinx
but I might go into more detail, something like "Hey I have this cool idea, what do you folks think? Could we do it better?" etc.
You should absolutely ask so that they can adjust their concepts if they agree. Otherwise the first time you pull some shenanigan the party is going to ask “why are we adventuring with someone working against us?” and could reasonably just kill, capture, or abandon your character.
...Down the line causing possible PvP but if people don't want it I'll readjust
I wanted to make sure people would be okay with this but my character isn't on the party's side and should've asked previously but would you guys be okay with a character who is helping for their own gain and hasn't gotten the best intentions? I won't try to ruin your fun or try to overtly screw your character's.
Down the line causing possible PvP but if people don't want it I'll readjust as I don't want people to quit the game which is why I'm asking now.
what's the diff between a hempen rope and a silk rope ?
Sarcastic answer: The material.
Real answer: I'm pretty sure hempen rope has more range but I could be wrong. What does it say on beyond?
both are 50 feet
"Rope, whether made of hemp or silk, has 2 hit points and can be burst with a DC 17 Strength check."
Just flavour
Oh okay
Weight.
Is spirit shroud a good spell to use in conjunction with cloud of daggers? Do they correlate at all?
They are both concentration
i don't understand concentration spells like what happens with them?
you need to hold your concentration
when someone hits you, you have to make a Con saving throw
if you fail, you lose your concentration
but if i used a concentration spell can i do things like cantrips or magic missiles or whatever. or does it lock me to that spell?
Have you read the rules on spell casting?
hey, I have a question, if I'm playing as a cavalier, can I mark an enemy with an "unwavering mark" with a thrown javelin? because technically isn't a javelin a mele weapon?
No
The key is the phrase "melee weapon attack"
Which is not the same as "any type of attack with a weapon that can also be used in melee"
The rest of the wording of the skill demonstrates the intent, to keep that enemy within your melee range
Ok thank you
Hello
Would anyone be open to explain how XP in dnd works?
As in how do players level up?
Monster statblocks have associated experience points (XP), which you would divide by the number of PCs. The DM can also grant the group XP for accomplishing other tasks. Once they reach a set amount, they get to the next level. See https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#CharacterAdvancement
Hello, I am new to the playing (have only ever spectated) and I have some questions about hybridizing and Druid subclasses
hybridizing?
Maybe they mean multiclassing?
That’d have been my guess.
Like hybrid races other than half elf/orc
A goblins scimitar says +4 to hit, does this mean the check has to be four numerals higher than the defender's armor to hit?
No, it means add 4 to your d20 roll to determine if you hit.
If that total meets or exceeds the target’s armor class, it’s a hit.
So Id add str, the d20, AND the +4?
The STR is already factored in.
They do matter in some instances.
the goblin str on the stablock also is used for its saving throws, ability checks etc
So creatures attacks dont scale like adventures when it comes to that?
Nope, you’ll throw different creatures as characters level up.
a normal goblin is a low level enemy, they dont automatically scale. If you want to run stronger goblins, then there are seperate statblocks for that
or you make your own
so theres no STR or Dex check for creatures attacking
just what is stated on the weapon?
Just what the attack itself says, yes.
oh okay
so um who wants to join my campain

goofy and fun light hearted
if you want to use the weapon on the statblock, the to hit bonus is already calculated for your convenience. If a creature makes an unarmed strike or uses a different weapon, you would use their stats to figure out what the to hit bonus and the damage is
So I like the idea of a half-sea elf, but don’t like the fact that they can’t breathe underwater, so I wanted to make the other parent a triton, since they are Amphibious
the stats of the races are what they are. changing parents doesnt affect that within the rules.
just talk to your DM if they allow sea half elves to breath underwater. It's probably an oversight that they cant do it anyway
See I thought about that, but didn’t want to leave it to chance so I consulted the official GM binder on the matter
(Or just play a Triton and call it a half sea elf.)
or a sea elf and say they have different parents
It’s mostly because I want to be able to pull pranks since sea elves can’t breathe air for more than a few hours before suffocating (at least according to the official rules)
in 5e, Sea elves can breath air and water for any period if time
Are there any campaigns i can join

According to the Monstrous Manual, aquatic/sea elves require a constant flow of magic to remain above water for extended periods of time and are often very uncomfortable while doing so
why are you looking at monster statblocks when you are making a character, also there are no sea elves in the 5e MM
are you playing a different edition?
I’m looking through the wiki mostly, which has a lot of conflicting information, hence my coming here for questions
Don't look through the wiki, it's mostly homebrew crap.
wikis are not a great source for up to date mechanics or lore
Read the Basic Rules. It's free.
What does homebrew mean
Ok, i was also looking through the GM binder for information on hybridization and it also said that half-sea elves can’t breathe underwater
Fan-created content, not official material.
Oh I see, thank you
Again, homebrew stuff.

Both are linked above.
Good to know, I probably would've been really confused later
So basically just talk to the DM about what they’ll allow?
Yep.
So leaving it up to chance on whether they will or won’t allow
Yeah. There’s no guarantee the DM will allow (or ban) material, regardless of whether it’s official or not. Sometimes races are omitted for lore/setting reasons, to say nothing of other game mechanics.
So I’m guessing it’s the same with certain subclasses and backstories
More or less.
The half-sea elf variant is found in the Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide.
So should I make 2 versions of the character, one following only the official rules and one that includes “unofficial” content?
Can’t hurt.
Hurts my brain
I would stick to the official rules.
Again, your DM would be the one deciding what homebrew stuff is acceptable. Play it safe and stick with what's official.
So I basically started the process backwards
How do I join a group? I don’t know anyone that plays where I live

To oversimplify, do you like worldbuilding, knowing secrets, planning? Be the DM. Do you like exploring one character’s interior thinking, being surprised? Be a player. (You can be each in different games, mind you.)
Idk I think I like both 😭 I guess I could try both but I don't know where I could do that-
Do you have any local game stores or libraries offering D&D programming? https://locator.wizards.com/#
I’m going to make a different character since I don’t want to leave certain aspects of this character to chance

Hello! If I may ask, how do I find a DM or a campaign to join?

Personally I think not, but it mostly depends on their background.

So a halfelf with an Outlander background speaking with decreased verbiage would be acceptable?
That’s gonna depend on who you’re playing with.
You should talk to your group about it first.
(But in theory, it’s possible to do.)
Doesn’t have to be an outlander to have a certain way of talking
Hello. I don't understand what that means, but I'm looking for a DM so I can play with my wife- I don't have enough cognitive function to play video games with her but I think I can do this
Read the text box posted beneath that message. It gives instructions for how to find others.
Oh alright. Thank you.
My main justification for it would be due to limited interactions with other races
Also “why use many words when few words do job” is a hilarious quote
You don't have to justify it to us here. You need to make sure it fits and works well with the D&D group you're playing with.
And I’d strongly recommend having that discussion up front, before you actually try it in-game.

Is there a Kids DnD campaign? for an 8 year old? My wife and I want to get her into it but the rules are way too complicated for her
Yes, but I have to search for it lol
If the rules are too complicated then perhaps look into the OSR, which is essentially a contemporary update/polish of the Basic/Expert rules (the Basic/Expert rules were simplified rules, compared to 1E AD&D, to help new players play D&D back in the early 1980s)
Necrotic Gnome has a SRD (aka free rules) PDF of their Old School Essentials (OSE) rules found on their website.
https://necroticgnome.com/products/old-school-essentials-basic-rules
I’ll take anything at this point…i have literally no clue where to even start lol
Monster Slayers: The Heroes of Hesiod is a free alternative https://susanjmorris.com/dd-for-kids/
5E is still complicated despite being more simple (compared to 3.5E and 4E). Basic/Expert (aka B/X) is barebones so that's why I recommend using it (or OSR/OSE) for younger players.
I started playing D&D when I was around 10. I cut my teeth on the Basic rules before my friends and I moved on to 1E AD&D.
This one says 4-6 players..it's only the three of us so that probably won't work right?
4 to 6 is recommended. You can have one player (with one DM) but that's not optimal. You can fill out party roles with NPCs called sidekicks.
https://media.wizards.com/2018/dnd/downloads/UA_Sidekicks.pdf

I play D&D with my kids, the youngest started when they were 4. You just have to simplify the rules and tweak things but most kids have fun pretending to be whatever. For example I asked my kid what their character was doing (they played a faierie dragon which is not technically a playable race) and they would explain what their character was doing ("I breath fire on the monster!"). I had them roll a 6-sided dice and tell me the number and if it was 3 or higher I considered it a success and described what happened. But no, there isn't specifically a "D&D just for kids" rules per se.
Other than the board games and that other link someone sent you, you could just run a fairy tale as a dnd story I’ve done it for my kids years ago
Are there any guides on how to do that?
You can still use it
Not that I'm aware of! It was just me figuring out what would be "manageable" for my kid and running with it and improvising.
I just focussed on making sure everyone was having fun.
Can I loot my dead party members body for his stuff?
Me and few friends ran our first campaign last week and now I have the bug! Feel like I've missed out all these years 😂

what
@torpid wing I've been playing for six years and I still don't understand if I'm being honest. I suggest throwing a CR close to your party level (i.e. 3 level 3 players, CR 4-5). Keep in mind, combat should only go as long as people are having fun. Just the other day I had a 240 HP monster go against my party and knocked off 40 HP because I realized they were getting to the end of the combat, and having less fun.
What's Up where can I go to find a group to join.
If you're a new DM ask in #dm-discussion
That was a bot command
Ya I guess Ill just do that... I really want to understand it though. It's just wildly over complicated
I would like to join u
it is and its dumb
Big dawg I'm looking for a DM right now
can I join u if u found one
Hell ya big man
ok lets do it
Ill ask in there as well to see what other replies i get. Thanks @opaque venture for the reply tho
I'm kinda confused on how to use the looking for dm thing
I figured it out ya gotta do /looking-for dm
I'd hope so yknow. I'm not expecting much if imma be honest big guy.
ayo is there any DND pro that is willing to hop on a call with me rq i have some questions about running a campaign
@summer geyser ive been running 5e for six years but idk about other editions
bruv bet
aight
so i just figured out the Encounter tool on D&D beyond
lol.. theres no point in learning the manual way.. when you cacn just use that tool
What is the best video to get started with DnD with minimum knowledge of it.
The Handbooker Helper series on YouTube
Thankyou
Not technically a video, but this short interactive adventure does a good job of introducing the basics.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/begin/en
There is a few youtube channels I'd recommend... one of them is "The Dungeon Dudes"
2 youtube channels that have been the most helpful for me are "The Dungeon Dudes" and "Bob World Builder"
I'm new and really the only thing I got is a goofy plasmoid and a dragon thing ig. Still wanna try but the extensive knowledge sorta required is a tad overwhelming :p
I agree that the Dungeon Dudes are great, but if the criteria is "the best video to get started with DnD with minimum knowledge of it," then Handbooker Helper is the go-to
Short, single-subject videos which cover the most basic of concepts
Thanks ill check then out
Welp I’m new to D&D whatahek am i doin

Do you need to roll for attack with magic missile? Does attack of opportunity stop targets from moving at all on their turn? i.e. they get hit then they can't keep moving?
where can i go to get my charecter looked at
#character-discussion is the channel specifically for discussing characters
#optimization is the place where you can delve into highly-opinionated math and theory to achieve optimized builds
Magic Missile just does damage, you do not make any kind of attack roll. The tradeoff for the auto-hit is that the damage isn't much. Normally, getting hit by an Opportunity Attack does not make you stop moving. The exception is if the attack has the Sentinel feat. The rules are kinda like marriage vows in The Princess Bride If they don't say it, they don't do it 🙂
I have an unfinished character, where can I go to finish that
so how do you stop an enemy from running away from you? won't it keep dashing away?
The folks in #character-discussion can help with that.
you can't grapple them if they move 60 ft away from dashing where you're limited to 30 ft + combat action
Sure it will. If it wants to get away from you. The Sentinel feat is one way to keep them where they are. Grappling is another. A Wizard casting Hold Person is another. And there are more. But by default your enemies have the same ability to move around as you do.
Is there a "cliff notes" version of the lost mine of phandelver for a DM? Or am I supposed to be reading straight from the book during the session?
You can Dash too, if you want to try and keep up with them. But if you and your enemy are just Dashing around the battlefield, nobody's going to be hitting anyone. Which is why it's good to have a mix of melee and ranged attackers in your party.
i mean if you're outside and a goblin is dashing away from you to escape into their trail, you can't really stop them right?
That’s all going to depend on the specific scenario.
There is no one right answer to that question.
Your Wizard can cast Fire Bolt at them, your Ranger can fire an arrow at them, you can chase them, but if the enemy thinks it's outmatched, it could very well just run away. Retreat is a perfectly valid combat tactic.
Is it possible to stop someone trying to escape? Yes.
Is it possible for someone to successfully escape? Also yes.
but that will kill them
i mean to capture
Capturing will by nature limit your choices, that's the nature of things
Even Sentinel isn’t infallible. Someone could just teleport away.
But for me, that’s why D&D is so cool: your failures can shape the story as much as your successes.
Or maybe like a script for Lost Mine of PHandelver that I can follow?
Had a demon teleport away from the party in tonights battle - the monk with super fast movement managed to get sight of them and finished off the demon with a ranged weapon. But yes, have fun with presenting the problem and seeing how your player's characters resolve it. Or miss it altogether. There's always another day...
Say that goblin does escape. You can always try to track it back to its lair/camp/whatever. Of course, you might be surprised when you get there and find the other 6 goblins that had stayed back, plus the two Bugbears 🙂
If you search for “how to run LMOP”, there’s plenty of different guides out there.
But using just the book is fine, too.
Think of the modules as like prompts. They usually have a blurb of something you would read to the players to get the scene moving, and then gives you notes to help you guide it.
There’s no right or wrong way of doing it. Every DM prepares in different ways. You’ve just gotta find what works for you and your group.
The only thing about DM prep that’s universally true is that eventually your players will surprise you with something you didn’t prepare for.
and sometimes those moments of pure chaotic improvisation end up being amazing moments for everyone, DM included
Hello?
Hi there!
Hi I’m new to online. This is my first time trying to talk on a server
Well nice ta meet ya
Well welcome. This server is the official D&D Discord server. We have many channels devoted to specific topics - see id:browse and #channel-guide.
I've recently gotten into dnd in general so why not start here
Ok
I've been looking for some people to play with
The pinned message here in the channel (that thumbtack icon in the upper right - or if on mobile swipe to see it) has lots of useful links that can help get you started.

^ or that
I think they was doing it for me cause I said I was new
if your looking for some players hit me up I'm down for anything for my first game
Im actually looking for some new players for my second DnD campaign
As a reminder, don't try and put together games/groups outside of the #looking-for channels.
See #find-a-game for info on how to use the #looking-for channels.
ya I kinda messed up and deleted my post so now I gotta wait a week.
yes thank ya
#looking-for-community may have servers with VC
Ok thanks
I wasn't able to find a script for Lost Mine of Phandelver. Has anyone that's run this campaign as DM ever made a google docs that I could check out at all?
What do you mean script?
What exactly do you mean by “script”? What are you looking for that the book itself doesn’t provide?
The adventure is free...
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/lmop
A script to follow....meaning what exactly do i say as DM and when do i say it and all that
Improv.
I know that but i want to follow someone else's first to learn better
There is no script for DMs because the players don't have scripts.
I'm sure someone had to have made notes and stuff
You have to learn to improv. It's part of the game.
I understand that
What one DM has in their notes may be meaningless to another. My notes may be meaningless to me because my players do/say something I hadn't planned for so my notes are useless (it has happened more than once)
well thats where the improv would kick in
There are a bunch of guides on YouTube and elsewhere online. Here's just one, which may or may not be what you're looking for: https://cros.land/a-dms-guide-to-lost-mines-of-phandelver/
i've read that but thank you. I'm looking for a more organized script to follow.
Your players can and will make any attempt at a script irrelevant.
But that’s the beauty of collaborative storytelling. Any single person, whether intentional or not, can change the story in completely unexpected ways.
LMoP is a sandbox. The players will go/do wherever they want. No script will prepare you for that.
Have you read the adventure yet?
D&D isn't linear. The players control the pacing and where their characters go.
they can't just say ok i'm going to dig a hole and magically find a cavern or something like that
how are they stopped then
I can go outside and do the same thing.
When they get tired or get ambushed by goblins.
how do they get ambushed
The rules are the structure, not the story.
how do they get tired?
You're the DM, you can decide that a goblin patrol spots the PCs digging a hole in the middle of the forest.
IMPROV!
DM: "After a few hours of digging under the hot sun you all have one level of exhaustion."
Do you know what "homebrew stuff" is?
yea made up campaigns
The player can dig the hole, but only the DM can say what was under there.
but that's not even in LMOP so i'm not understanding how they can do that
The adventure is a guideline. The players have no idea what the adventure has in store so they tell you the DM that their characters do X and you the DM tell them what happens.
Well, that's your job as the DM to fill in what's not in the book.
Can't the DM make it so that they follow the campaign strictly then
The authors of the adventure can't predict what every single player plans to do.
so if they say something that isn't in the book, the DM can just say no
That's railroading then.
I'm a beginner....I'm just looking for some sort of beginners script thats all lol
thank you for your information though i appreciate the input
Is that a way to DM? Yes. Is it a successful way to DM? Depends on your group.
Again, LMoP is a sandbox adventure. The PCs have multiple quests that they decide whether to do or not and if they do, whatever order to do them in.
my players are my two brothers who are also learning
Maybe this will be helpful? https://docs.google.com/document/d/11Q6K0hSnZ_d4HkQX-cUnj9ufhBiIXDSQVgi8A5A39wc/edit A Reddit user's DM notes for part of the adventure. There isn't anything more specific than that because each DM prepares differently.
so its just basicaly an introduction for us all and we can just mess around
There are numerous D&D Youtubers, such as How to D&D, who have advice/tutorial videos on Lost Mine of Phandelver.
I am not completely new to D&D, but I am to the chat
So talk to your players beforehand. If you’re all learning together, ask them to kind of just say “yes” to whatever comes and that’ll make it easy to keep them roughly on track.
But by the same token, you’re going to have to say “yes” to things to.
I'll keep looking around for notes/guides but thanks all!
And if you’re interested and just watching someone play, I know dingo doodles is a good person
They can and will go off rails, and you’ll have to figure out how to nudge the story back in the direction you want.
They’re going to kill someone who had information they needed. You can’t just “oh wait, you’re supposed to capture him.”
You’ll have to move that information to a letter in a chest they open, or something.
That runs the risk of making it seem like their choices don’t matter.
they won't know that though
It’s saying “no” instead of “yes, and…”
they're just beginning too
it'll be a learning process
so when they are at the Goblin Ambush part, and the cart stops, if they say we want to run away from the area and go explore elsewhere...how would a DM respond to that?
How about we take this to #dm-discussion? That is spoiler territory as there are players for that adventure here.
my bad
#1029835597168267384 if you really want to get into spoilers.
If you're all new, you may not realize there's an implicit social contract involved in D&D. The DM prepares scenarios and it's up to the players to, generally, engage with them. Walking away from the quest is bad form, so this may need to be a discussion with the table BEFORE playing.
Hi there, I have made a villain that drains the magically power from players. What save should I have the players roll, I was thinking wisdom?
Ok thank you
A new character... 😉
Anyone want to hear about a really bad character that I made
That's more #character-discussion.
@obsidian perch You might want to give this video a watch. It's about some of the things you and your players may not know about the implicit contract of D&D (and tabletop roleplaying games generally): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KqIZytzzFKU
hello!!!
Heya!!
should i still buy the core rulebooks for 5E this year, knowing that the rulebooks for One D&D are coming out next year?
I mean, they dont become obsolete or unusable when the new versions arrive. Unlike a video game update, no one is forced to switch to new material
A lot people still play older editions of D&D still.
Hello
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/98979791 this is my rogue character
i got permission to have a quarterstaff as a base for my rogue because its a spoof on wukong
i wanted to make it unique and different(obviously peoples done wukong before.)
this is for a new campaign and i thought this would be fun
Im a 3rd level life cleric. So,I should have 4 1st level spells prepared. Thanks to My domain,I always have Cure Wounds and Bless prepared.
Does that mean I get to choose 4 other 1st level spells of my choice or 2 1st level spells of my choice?
Im having trouble understanding if I get to prepare 4 additional spells alongside cure wounds and bless or just 2 more spells?
Each domain has a list of spells — its domain spells — that you gain at the cleric levels noted in the domain description. Once you gain a domain spell, you always have it prepared, and it doesn’t count against the number of spells you can prepare each day.
So you can still prepare four more spells.
Hi everyone! This is my first time venturing into the world of dnd and wondering how best to get my head around things. I know reading the guides are a good start, but I get a bit overwhelmed by that. Is there any recommended channels I can follow/watch which might help me get a better understanding of the rules and how it all works? Also, any recommendations on finding a group of people who would be more than happy to play with a complete amateur would be amazing! Thanks all!
If you want the basics on any particular rule, Handbooker Helper does a good job of it.
https://m.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN
And if you’ve got any specific rules questions, you can ask in here or in #dnd-rules.
As for finding a game, there’s plenty of beginner-friendly options out there. You can get started in #find-a-game.
What's a good beginner's campaign to play with middle schoolers besides the lost mines of phandelver
Thanks heaps!! Appreciate the response
For that, try "The Dragon of Icespire peak", it's also connected to lost mines if you want to do something with that.
Anyone able to explain to me what 'west march style' even is? I'm new to dnd and trying to figure out how things work
Thank you so much
can Pureblooded Orcs (not half orc) use Relentless Endurance feat?
It’s a community-style game where a large number of players exist in a shared world. A subset of players will plan what they want to do for the next session and when, then find a DM to run it.
Tysm
They’re good for players who need flexibility in their scheduling, because there’s sessions happening at various times.
The tradeoff is that you may be playing with a different group for each session.
Apologies for reposting
can Pureblooded Orcs (not half orc) use Relentless Endurance feat?
Yes, they can and no problem about reposting, I'm sorry I didn't answer sooner.
Can you give me a good starter for begining a session? Im a DM
Second Wind is a bonus action, does that mean the player can move and do combat too in that turn? if so can they only do bonus actions last?
You can take both an action and a bonus action, yes.
As for timing…
You choose when to take a bonus action during your turn, unless the bonus action's timing is specified, and anything that deprives you of your ability to take actions also prevents you from taking a bonus action.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#BonusActions
You mean like an opening scene?
Just wondering, could someone rate my first character? a Rogue Halfling called Taffer Copperleaf
https://ddb.ac/characters/98681415/PNKhpm
Did you roll for stats, or use point buy?
If you don't have a DM then I recommend you stick with point buy. If you have a DM, the DM would probably want to witness your rolls.
fair enough
I’d suggest removing a point from STR (which will stay at +2), then bumping both your INT and WIS to 10 (making them +0 instead of -1).
Generally speaking, even numbers are better than odds for your ability scores.
But it looks good overall. 👍🏻
how to-
How to what?
play ssory abit laggy rn so. is there a free version of the game? I've read the pinned but still confused
Yes, the Basic Rules are free. Think of it like a video game demo.

okayokay
There’s a good overview here of the different classes:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1047-d-d-101-a-quick-breakdown-of-classes-in-dungeons
following the link that was previously posted is it okay that I made an acct in dnd beyond.com?
Sure. Why wouldn’t it be?
The account is free.
Hello, I started a dnd club at my school and the only other dm isn’t experienced and I was wondering if any of you could tell me what to do for that
If you want to DM, head on over to the #dm-discussion channel where you can ask questions/advice on DMing.

its an inside joke
ayy D20. love D20
I'm up for a game, I also have no experience
is there anyone here that wants to join my and @lapis shuttle server for DND
Yeah :DD
ill invite you to or server
oh thanks
We don't know yet haha were still tryna learn
what is a "module"
A module is a published adventure.
Like what adventure are you guys trying to run.
This lol
They're called "modules" back in the day because they were "modular" in that you just drop that adventure into your campaign.
I have about 3hours of experience so I’m just trying to use the lingo I’ve searched and found
Im tryna re-read the basics
And mostly because I’ve been on Roll20 trying to find games to run and they call them modules on there.
i dont have much either but we can try to figure all that out but we dont have a map or DM yet
But the bad thing is imma have to make a new character because the one i have now only has 12 HP
Doesn't the HP level up??
i have LVL 4 at 35
Earth Genasi Cleric
level on 11 hp
but in that case ill keep it
i thought that was really low
my AC is 13
Pro tip: share the actual character sheet instead of the PDF. 😜
The only complaint with the D&D app for my character creation is that they don’t have the Drow option
Unless you buy the players handbook of course
Only the stuff in the Basic Rules are free D&D Beyond. You need to unlock the playable races/classes by either buying the books are the individual race/classes (for about $2 each)
Im level one with 10 oml
How do I get to the option to buy the individual race/class? I look for it in the market place and when I click the subrace it brings me to the purchase players handbook option only
does anyone know how to DM
Yeah
You go to the Marketplace, click on a book, and you should see all of the individual items in that book you can purchase individually.

Okay so I had to go on my PC and use that marketplace, the one on my phone wasn’t providing the breakdown for individual purchase. Thanks!

How important is the meta discussion in DnD ? I feel like in many youtube videos people rank or compare classes. But in the End the DM will Balance encounters to the group right ? So im wondering if i should care about playing subclasses who are considered "bad".
