The quick-start guide below explains how to find a game here on our server. Check out #find-a-game for the channel rules, FAQ, and off-server game options.
• #750812887697588356 has players who are ready to join a game.
• #looking-for-players has unpaid DMs offering a traditional D&D experience: a single party playing together through a shared adventure.
• #looking-for-community has free community-style games like West Marches, One-Shot locators, and more. These are easy to join and regularly active, but you might play with different people each session.
• #paid-looking-for-game has games that require payment to join. These games might offer a more professional DM experience or more consistent participation.

To post your own instead, simply type /looking-for, select the channel you want, and send.
each patron adds a different set of spells to the warlock spell list for you, but you still have to take those spells as you normally would with a general warlock spell
Does anyone know if a aasimar can be a rouge assassin without being fallen?
Sure. There’s no racial restriction on any of the classes.
You can choose any of the aasimar sub-types as a rogue.
I need help learning spells, I'm too smooth brain to understand by myself
What class of spellcaster?
warlock
What about them confuses you? Picking, damage, hits?
everything, theres too much information presented at once to process
So they don’t get many spell slots, which is how many spells you can cast each day basically
Warlocks pick spells as they level up, and have to cast them at the highest level they can
ok
So you will have at level 1, 2 1st level spells, as well as 2 cantrips
Which are ‘level 0’ spells that have an unlimited number of uses
ok
Is there anything else, that probably wasn’t the best explanation
what about eldritch invocations?
The Warlock Table shows for each level how many spells you know, how many spell slots you have and what level they are, and how many invocations you have.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/warlock#TheWarlockTable
perfect. that helps miles
I've basically grew up playing mmorpgs, single player rpgs and so on. In those games, items had quality ranks.
Take World of warcraft for example.
White items are basic, common.
Rare items are green, maybe 1 or two enchants, blue are rare items, purple are epic, and then legendary items.
Does a system like this exist in dnd5e? How about "soul bound items" where a player loots any item above a common quality the item is bound to that character and cannot be traded
Magic items have rarities, which are kind of a loose guide to their power (but not really). Nothing like the other thing, though.
D&D predates any video game RPG, so relying on them as a frame of reference will only go so far.
Each magic item has a rarity: common, uncommon, rare, very rare, or legendary.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dmg/treasure#Rarity
Oh yea, I know dnd predates. I was trying to see if I could take some simple systems I'm used to and homebrew them into dnd
Thanks
You can absolutely do so, but I would recommend steering away from homebrewing until you have a firm understanding of the game.
Learn the rules before you break them.
Yea, valid point
Because if you don't now what you broke it'll be harder to fix.
5E has been around for almost 10 years (plus 2 years of playtesting before that).
Yea, ill pick up some dm books.
I'm currently in the process of building a world for mutiple campaigns to take place in.
That parts fun. But I also gotta learn the technical parts like rules too
You don't need to buy any books right now if you're starting. The Basic Rules are free and it's enough for now.
Thanks

I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
Cheers
what should i do to become a dm?
That’s a big question. The basic things would be learn the rules and grab a module to run.
im not looking for anything complicated just my current dm never makes sessions so i wanted to play some more but where could i find the rules and module
The Basic Rules are here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
You can buy modules officially at bookstores or games shops, but there are also free ones on D&D Beyond and DMsGuild.
thanks
Ask questions / advice about DMing in #dm-discussion
How long would it take to start dnd
In what sense? How long to learn the rules? How long to find a group?
Both really
Depends if you're comfortable with the rules.
I don’t have a problem with it I just don’t really know how to start
Hi
I got a 4 friends along with me who want to try it out
Did you read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation)?
Yea I made a character
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hD-LWHhiseE&list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN&index=1
Ok
Should I do the same if I am also wanting to start on D&D and I created a character?
Couldn’t hurt!
Knowing is half the battle.
Those videos are really helping me get a better understanding
i'm relatively new. where can i start? i've made characters before, and read some of the rules. i'd probably have to read again.
Look for a game in #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community
Excuse me.
How do Sorcerers Learn new magics ?
Like lets say I am Level 1 sorcerer and I have 2 sorcery point. At level 2 does that goes to 5 with +3 OR it directly goes to 3 from 2 ?
normally a level 1 sorcerer should have no sorcery points, unless you took the metamagic adept feat.
you would have 2 spell slots at level 1 , if that is what you mean
Sorry I think I messed up explaining.
I want to learn how sorcerers expand their Magic Spell list.
And does Sorcery points add up or just stays the fixed number ?
ah so first, sorcery points and spell slots are different.
you have 2 spell slots and 2 spells known at level 1. When you level up to Sorcerer level 2, you gain another spell slot and can learn another spell. you can also replace one of the spells learned at first level with a new one
see also the sorcerer table https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/sorcerer#TheSorcererTable
sorcery points can be used to regain spell slots or on metamagic, which changes your spells.
you gain 2 sorcery points at level 2 and then +1 for every sorcerer level afterwards
hey guys, new DM here, was just looking for a reliable and easy to use site for making custom maps, im trying to make my own
Welcome! We have many posters that share their creations in #dnd-maps. Also there are many other sources as well - world maps via Azgaar's Fantasy Map generator (https://azgaar.github.io/Fantasy-Map-Generator/), https://2minutetabletop.com has many free/pay what you want maps, etc.
thx, still new here
For folks looking for a game - please use the #looking-for channels - see #find-a-game for info.
Howdy.
what are your guys opinions on rapiers?
Fwip fwip stab.
cut cut
Stab dodge stab stab
flick wrist, cut, pokey poke, dodge, flick poke
Best melee weapon you can get if you have higher DEX than STR.
Errr… I mean… parry, parry, thrust.
Hi um any advice for making characters? Im struggling a bit with it
Where are you stuck?
Stats and stuff
So there’s three official ways to determine your ability scores. Which one you should use is a question for your DM.
If you don’t have a DM yet, I’d suggest using Standard Array or Point Buy to start.
Those are all described here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#3DetermineAbilityScores
Thank you
Once you’ve got your ability scores (each from 1 to 20), you’ll also need your ability score modifiers (each from -4 to +5). You can look those up here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#AbilityScoresandModifiers
It’s generally the modifiers that you’ll need to calculate the rest of your sheet.
okay thanks for the help
Which class are you playing?
Thinking about trying a ranger
Then FWIW, the Ranger Quick Build guide says this:
First, make Dexterity your highest ability score, followed by Wisdom. (Some rangers who focus on two-weapon fighting make Strength higher than Dexterity.)
But each class has a guide like that in their class description if you choose something else.
And you’re not required to follow them, but it’s generally good advice.
Understand context/specifics matter, but as a generalization how many sessions with a new group do you think it takes to feel out if they're a good fit for you and vice versa?
A few times I've been invited to games and I thought the group was nice but didn't really feel like we vibed/played off each other that well, but I don't know how much of that is innate/X-factor chemistry and how much of it is just needing time to get to know them.
That is an interesting and complex question and unfortunately I can't give any easy answer. Unless you know many folks at the table/game already, I expect it can take anywhere from 3-7 sessions before everyone feels really comfortable with the social dynamics of the group (or by that point completely recognize the group isn't a good fit). I mean barring any first session red flags that just scream "this is not the group for me".
It can really vary based on the individual and the group, but that’s why a Session 0 is important.
Talk about your wants and expectations before the game even begins to make sure you’re all on the same page.
Yeah it's tough to even put the question into words, haha.
For sure on red flags, yeah.
One issue I've run into a few times is open game slots show up in a campaign that's already running and nobody really wants to take that break, so they kind of opt to literal trial by combat.
Maybe it’s worth focusing on joining new games rather than ones in progress to avoid that precise issue?
True
It's already so tough to find games with decent people, schedules match, etc...
Oh yeah, that can definitely be rough, especially if the DM pits you against each other.
Keep in contact with folks that you've found interesting and fun to play with. Eventually you may have a perfect group to start your own D&D games with.
Yeah that's very true. I've been toying with the idea of running some one shots myself to build contacts for a potential campaign.
It’s honestly the fastest way to build a group.
Plus, if you’re the filter, that raises the chances you’ll admit people you’d mesh with.
Hello, maybe this sounds a bit obvious but I've only gotten into d&D recently. What are some easy ways to find people to play with (online/irl). I've been watching videos on rules and other things, asked a few friends if they'd be interested but none so far and am just wondering
I've been looking for people to play with for a while and I have made a character, so if anyone wants someone to play with I'm free

I do recommend being patient -putting together a group and finding the right schedules and all that takes time and effort.
But also check out the #looking-for-community - these are other D&D servers that may be running pick-up D&D games.
If you want to play IRL I would ask at local card/board game shops... Many game shops have a thieves cant style area where they low key play DnD at night.
If your city has a subreddit post there; you can also try to find any local Facebook/etc. groups near you.
Like Dying said it's a slow burn. You kind of ask around and it may feel like you're not getting anywhere but if you're persistent you'll suss out where the quality local watering holes are.
Thank you all, I'm heading out now but I thought I'd message before I did so thanks for the help
I'm trying to get into playing digitally, but all of my friends said they weren't interested, what should I do
It's not a satisfying answer, but find new people to play with.
Like we were talking about earlier, you can also start your own games
Doesn't seem to be a shortage of wayward players looking to get into it.
Is there a different server for people trying to get into it just like me
@rare gyro
Also a note - sometimes your IRL friends don't make good D&D friends. It's okay. You can still do fun things with them and be friends.
Ello
hey everybody, i'm really new to this and not sure if i should type here but here goes. I've never played D&D or D&D Beyond before and am 100% curious to how to play with others. I live on the east coast and don't really know if I can play despite not having any funds right now. Any tips on how to get started will be more than thankful.

I did the interactive adventure as a Wizard and did pretty good and made two classes (in case I screwed up on one). I will check out the other links though. Thanks
@wintry sluice my group is running a campaign for new players for tonight and have a space avaible if you would like to come join shoot me a pm
You can definitely play without spending money, though.
yeah
The Basic Rules cover everything you need to know.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
really? i just thought that the subscription (and a few books off the D&D Beyond site) would be needed. shows what i be thinking
And you can create up to six characters on D&D Beyond at no cost.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/builder
And there’s digital dice you can use there as well, instead of buying physical ones.
Oh cool! i never knew that.
And instead of buying the full book, you can also buy parts of it individually, like a single subclass.
Whatever you spend gets credited toward the cost of the book itself, too.
So you can just grab what you need when you need it and spread out the total.
Or just stick to the Basic Rules options, or homebrew your own without paying anything.
Or your local library might have the core rulebooks, if you wanted to flip through them.
What's Homebrew? And not going to lie about this, but last time I tried to find some books at a library, some guys came up to me and said i was wasting time there and all i needed was dice and a sheet of paper. Should've ignored them then but oh well.
Homebrew is user-made content.
If you’re brand new, though, I’d focus first on understanding the game before trying to modify it.
Learn the rules before you decide to break it. Imagine trying to put a car engine back together again if you have zero experience as a mechanic.
Hey, I know this isn’t the right chat for this but I would love to join a beginner friendly server. Thanks you guys!
Check out #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community
Same I would also like to join a beginner friendly server
I’ve a mercy monk sheet I’m making and idk what tools monks get says I can pick 3 of them
So Im going to play my first DnD game, but im starting at level 10, and the DnD beyond site helps a lot, but Im struggling with the overwhelming aspect of spells/cantrips and selecting them. For context, I am a bard with the college of lore. I have these so far,
-minor illusion/-Prestidigitation/-Thaumaturgy/-Charm Person/-Disguise Self/-Healing Word/-Illusory Script/Counterspell/Revivify
That’s purely up to you there’s no wrong choice just some do more useful stuff then other spells
Well some spells won’t be used unless dm wants them to be used but there’s websites show you which spells are often used the most for useful rating
quick question: Does Mass Effect 5e counts as a Homebrew?
Homebrew or third-party publisher.
If it's not published by D&D it's either 3rd party or homebrew
ah ok
So idk what to do because I’m new to dming but here’s what happened. My players were walking through a forest until they found a goblin spying on them, the cleric used a net to catch him, they took his weapons so he couldn’t escape, two players then decided to bully him and try to take his goggles, to which he got very protective,”no they’re my goggles”. They then killed him and i bullcrapped him back to life and they decided to be nice, he now adventures with them and is now the party’s warlock, as I decided it was a god who brought him to life, when he died, the party’s artificer made a new body and a soul crystal and now he is taller and kind of op. What do I do with him, I need advice
First off that’s one terrible party
Welcome to the dangers of DMPCs - find a way for them to disappear from the adventure or put them back into the background where they can support the group but not be in the forefront.
What do they know about the god who brought him back? Could turn out that god isn't on their side or wants to use them to do something they don't want to do.
Or the god is angry at them for killing a helpless goblin and being horrible people
Killing a goblin out of like oh no goblin quick kill him but you had him disarmed and picked on them I wouldn’t stay in a party like that way too low
Thinking about making a campaign based on the video game Destiny 1 called D1ND with a podcast, campaign will be split off into “sub-campaign” for each dlc and base game, each exotic weapon/armor will have its unique ability in a DND fashion.
Campaign currently has 5 players+DM and will soon begin
Interesting. Good luck!
It’s going to be our first campaign for everyone in the group (including DM)
First time dm in a destiny themed campaign? What could go wrong
Let the chaos begin
I ain’t the DM tho, I’m an Exo (Warforged) Solar Warlock
The entire session is full of my friends in high school
This is gonna be fun
All we need is podcast equipment and ways of identifying our class with the symbol for each guardian class
Idk if every player got a dice set and box yet
The DM dmed me saying he’ll get one this week
hi i am new and looking for a good time to play anyone can i join a campain
31M looking to get into DnD, with hopes of becoming a DM down the line. I've played plenty of RPG video games, some Tabletops like Mansions of Madness and Betrayal, and have been replaying the Early Access Baldur's Gate 3. DM me if anyone can help show me the ropes in a digital campaign.

Can I use stuff from other universes for my character?
So it's just up to the setting basically?
It's up to your DM if they think it fits their campaign setting or not.
If I want to share the character that I'm trying to make for feedback? Where do I do that?
I feel dumb-stupid RN (I was trying to find Warhammer stuff for my character, but found nothing and then remember I could use the PDF sheet)
Hey I'm a new player and I want to get into DnD. Is there a good place to find people to play with outside of here?

I rolled a Nat 1 on an attack roll and a monster ate my rapier
It should have been the end of it
I rolled a Nat 1 on my attack roll again later on the same monster and it ate my hand
Ouch crit fail tables, cruel DM you have there with that homebrew
Can i cast Mage Hand and specifically put it on my missing hand ?
That’s not a stated use for the hand, so that’s probably a question for your DM.
Hello!
I'm kinda new to dnd, got into it and have a character, played a session. Know a bit but I'm kinda just looking to get further in the community n such.
How's yalls day?
Good! Yours?
*COUGH* Hello there, lads. Er... well, I'm assuming DnD is a very broad topic as a whole, but... What exactly is it, fundamentally speaking?
Moreover... how would I begin playing?
Additionally, how does character creation work?
There are some useful links pinned here.
Beyond The Storm does a great job of introducing the basics.

Heroes wanted! In this guided interactive adventure, create your first character and learn the basics of playing Dungeons & Dragons.
anyone got an online campaign?
Lots of people! Check out #find-a-game to get started.
thanks 🙏
Personally speaking, it’s many different things to many different people. For me it’s a game of collaborative storytelling. For others it’s a deadly meat grinder of a dungeon. For other others it’s living out a fantasy.
Play by grabbing the basic rules, and check out the step by step character creator. Don’t try to read everything. You don’t have to. Pick a race, pick a class, read the rules on combat, and the rules on spell casting if you wanna be a caster.
☝🏻 The Basic Rules:

gonna dm my first gmae in afew hours any tips
Know when to say yes and how to say no.
ok ok
Know how combat works
Looking for a group can any one help?
Check out #find-a-game for advice/instructions.
Thankee, lad. I'll waltz on by once I have more info...
So Im having a little difficulty understanding how combat works. My 10th level bard has 1-5th level casts. And each level has a specific number of slots. Ex, 1st has 4 slots, 5th has 2. Does that mean I have 15 slots to use per resting?
Per long rest, yes.
Ah! okay.
To cast a spell, you need to spend a spell slot of equal or higher level.
So if I cast Healword with its 5th level,, id use a 5th level spell slot
Yep
Awesome
Cantrips are the exception. They don’t use spell slots, you can cast them as often as you like.
Mhm
Hey everyone. I've only ever played DnD once about ten years ago and want to get into playing it.
And do I have to roll a specific dice for each spell, or only the ones that mention it?
Each spell will tell you what you need to do.
Some have you roll; some have the target roll.
Some don’t involve dice at all.
Fair enough

If you look up here, these are some resources to help you get started!
Oh neat!
i don't quite understand the Sleep spell
You roll 5d8 to determine the max HP a creature has that you can sleep, right ?
Yes.
For example, your party encounter 10 goblins so you cast Sleep. You roll 5d8 and get 30 hp. Each goblin has 7 hp so four of them (4 x 7 hp = 28 hp) fall asleep.
oh so it's the maximum HP you can sleep, regardless of how many the enemies are ?
Yes.
Creatures within 20 feet of a point you choose within range are affected in ascending order of their current hit points (ignoring unconscious creatures).
Lowest hp creatures are affected by the Sleep spell first.
oh okay I understand
Also
on another note
can Mending repair organic substance ?
such as a hand to a body
I don’t think any reasonable DM would allow it.
mmh
so what's the lowest level spell that could do it ?
because the only spell I'm thinking about now is Wish
Regenerate is level 7.
can Wizards learn it ?
No. Bards, druids, and clerics have access to it.
Should I just hope I find the right scroll ?
to copy it in my spellbook ?
or are there only wizard spells that can be wrote in the Spellbook (of a Wizard)?
Only wizard spells.
You cannot.
mmh
guess I'll just have to wait for the Wish spell
the most powerful one
because I have no bards, nor clerics, nor druids in my party
No. Objects only.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/search?q=mending
This spell repairs a single break or tear in an object you touch, such as a broken chain link, two halves of a broken key, a torn cloak, or a leaking wineskin,
so I could potentially get a magical prosthetic ?
Prosthetic Limb is an Common rarity magic item.
Combat in D&D typically doesn't involve hacking off limbs (there are magic weapons such as Sword of Sharpness and the Vorpal Blade that do have game mechanics of severing limbs and heads, though)

well, damage spells list their damage in their description. and attacks involve hitting the target's Armor Class and then rolling the damage based on the weapon you used. its all explained in the basic rules combat section i believe.
do you have a specific situation in mind maybe?
ahhh guess i have miss out some part
well imma check back the rules again feels like I miss out some huge part of the rules
well back to reading it is
it happens. wouldn't be fair to expect you memorize them all early on. just gotta know what to reference when you don't remember.
so it is normal to get confused a bunch when starting out?
yeah. especially if you haven't played RPGs or tabletop games much before starting.
D&D is a complex game with lots of rules, it's normal to get confused
well what im scared about is my friends will get confused with the rules and end up not giving dnd a try.
btw i dun think i need too much of a stuff for dnd right since its mostly narrative.
i'd emphasize to them that trying it out, getting stuff wrong and correcting the mistake later on is 🌠 part of the experience 🌠
i am still learning myself to this day and figuring out what rules i've made mistakes on.
Hi I'm a newcomer to dnd and I've never played a game in my life I'm looking for a group to play with I play on roll 20 and looking for help learning the game

then maybe read the DMG
so if my magic prosthetic was to break, could I re-attach it to my body with Mending ?
am reading em. i hope my first Dnd went well with ma bois
Hey so which one do I pick if I'm looking to join a campaign
Or at least find people to make one
I'm not new to the game but new to dnd beyond, and I was wondering if there is a way to use maps like you can on roll20?
Have you read #find-a-game ? It explains what each channel is for and how to post their (if making a post). Otherwise just direct message the poster to express interest in their game or use the thread attached to their posting to communicate.
DnDBeyond does not provide a virtual table top (VTT) experience. That said you can use the maps from adventures in VTT's like Roll20, FoundryVTT, or Owlbear.rodeo or even share them in a Discord channel to help players see things.
Hello guys, i am a new player. How can i find a helpful guild?

If someone were to give the cat catnip how would the cat be affected I would just use homebrew rules that most people use for being drunk but they don't really fit
i had a question concerning paladins spell ?
since it says the oath spells don't count against paladins spells, does it mean you can take them freely ?
like if you're a level 4 paladin with a +2 Cha mod
you can take up to 4 spells
because 2 + half of paladin level
but your oath gives you 2 other spells
does it mean you can have 6 spells while still being only able to cast 3 ? (because 3 spells slots at level 4)
Oath spells are granted and always prepared. That said you still need the spell slots to cast them.
so in the paladin's spell list, you could have up to 6 spells at that level and with that cha mod ?
That's really up to the DM to decide what makes sense and how they want to handle it in their game.
You gain oath spells based on your level that are always prepared and don't count against your daily number of prepared spells.
That's all it does - you gain these specific spells (because of your oath) and they are always prepared and don't count against the normal daily number of prepared spells. But again, to use them, you still have to have the appropriate spell slots.

I'm struggling to understand something, can I cast any spell as a bonus action or does it need to say somewhere in the casting time that it can take up a bonus action instead of a full action - if that makes sense
The spell itself describes whether it's cast as a bonus action or action or reaction.
Only a sorcerer with metamagic can cast a normal "action" spell as a bonus action using the Quickened Spell metamagic.
How do you post in looking for dm it keeps sending me to other groups lol
Make sure your Discord is up to date - you may need to reinstall it to make sure.
Check out #find-a-game for instructions.
The process is fairly simple - start typing /looking-for and then select the channel, and then the bot will give you a form to fill out. Once the form is completed and submitted, the bot will create the post in the specified channel and attach a thread to it for handling any updates/clarifications, and communication (e.g. a DM can use the thread to contact you).
My pcs just leveled up and stated that they needed more health because of leveling up and they each roll specific dice for the amount of hit points they get but if they keep going like this their health will get very high, is there a way to fix this?
How many dice are they rolling?
Youre the DM you set the rules for HP on level up whether it be roll 1 hitdie plus con mod or average plus con mod
guys can someone explain what does ability check and saving throw do?
Hi! New here, and am looking for a DM or a group to play with
Do reactions like counterspell count for a spellslot use?
Yes iirc
Already doing it, thanks!
Generally speaking, you roll an ability check to attempt something, and a saving throw to avoid something.
Either way, you roll a d20, add any applicable bonuses (typically an ability score modifier and your proficiency bonus), and give your DM the total.
They compare that number to the Difficulty Class (DC) of the task. If your total is equal or greater, you succeed.
On average, an easy task has a DC of 10, medium 15, and hard 20.
Can someone tell me how I can get started with solo dnd pls
Solo dnd?

and character creation?
Recommend checking out the free basic rules and maybe see the Handbook Helper videos: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN
the JoCat guide is pretty easy to understand as well, but if you would like a more in depth understanding definitely check out what DyingNoob linked
Magic items don't normally break...
I highly recommend NOT watching JoCat's Crap Guide (there's a reason it's called "crap guide") as its humour is more meant for people who actually has knowledge of D&D.
the end of the playlist is the actual "guide" part
but the most of it is explaining most of the og classes
in a very funny manner
It's more entertainment than educational IMO.
For non-native English speakers it would be much harder to comprehend given how fast JoCat speaks during the videos.
i forgot he speaks at like 1000 miles a second
Stick to dungeon dudes or handbooker helper for newcomers
yeah they're pretty cool
So how is HIT / DC used on spells? My charm person for example has 16 WIS
hit is mainly used for spells or attacks that target for damage, while aoe or charm spells use your spell casting dc as a save roll for the person targeted
like how eldritch blast has a roll to hit, while something like acid splash makes them have a dex save throw or take the acid damage
do i have to be "honest" about what im doing? as an example lets say i find or make fake gold coins. and then later i want to use them either as a bribe or some other use. should i say "im going to attempt to use this fake coin to do X" or could i simply say "im going to attempt to use this gold coin to do X" and then after reveal to the dm that it was the fake one?
you can keep information like that in private with the dm
especially if you don't want your party to know
okay but i should still be honest to the dm about it?
like for example you wanna rob someone but only want the dm to know and you kinda do it in secret
yes you have to be honest with the dm about stuff like that
gotcha, ty
np
The DM is the means by which you as a player interact with the world. Lying to them is rarely gonna go well.
so true
How do I get access to #looking-for-players?
Read the instructions in #find-a-game.
I am a new DM. I am running a 5 player campaign. The party is currently a Battle Smith Artificer, a Shadow Monk, a Battlemaster Fighter, and a Necromancy Wizard. What type of character would round out this party?
Howzit guys, so I have a keen interest in d&d, never played before, have sort of a understanding of the game, but not a complete understanding, I download d&d beyond, what is next for me,

Beasts aren't automatically tameable with a couple Animal Handling rolls. They're wild animals, remember.

Thank you so much! I really appreciate it!
how much time does crafting 1 piece of clothing take ?
Ask your DM.
oh so it isn't a definite rule ?
No...
Actually there is a rule in the DMG, but it depends on coin
There are different types of clothing of different styles and materials... A skirt is different from a ball gown.
Where?
Sorry, PHB, Downtime: Crafting, p 187
For every day of downtime you spend crafting, you can craft one or more items with a total market value not exceeding 5 gp, and you must expend raw materials worth half the total market value. If something you want to craft has a market value greater than 5 gp, you make progress every day in 5-gp increments until you reach the market value of the item. For example, a suit of plate armor (market value 1,500 gp) takes 300 days to craft by yourself.
I think Xanathar also adjusts that

wellcant do it cuz got school stuff wednesday
Xanathar's:
To determine how many workweeks it takes to create an item, divide its gold piece cost by 50. A character can complete multiple items in a workweek if the items' combined cost is 50 gp or lower. Items that cost more than 50 gp can be completed over longer periods of time, as long as the work in progress is stored in a safe location.
So, still ask your DM, because what optional rules they use are important
Games happen on various days, so I don't understand why you'd have that issue.
Hey, newcomer here. I have a question.
What language should I choose for my human character?
Common and if they have additional languages then whatever popular languages are in your DM's campaign setting.
Common is chosen in DnD Beyond. Any suggestion for one additional language?
If you're creating a character but don't have a DM/game yet, it's essentially practice. That's a good thing, but it means that some of the choices you make won't mean anything until you have a game you're in.
Ask your DM what languages are available in their setting. If there are no elves in their setting then taking Elvish is rather moot.
I like Elvish when it makes sense for the character as I tend to think of elves as having a strong affinity for magic. Of course, that may not be true in the setting you're in.
It also depends on your character: I wouldn't make that choice for a martial class, in all likelihood.
What about Paladin?
Depends on the individual.
Again, what makes sense for your character? What did they do before adventuring? What kind of people did they encounter often? What kind of culture fascinated them?
Grew up with dwarves. Good Education. Dead Parents.
So then likely Dwarvish?
That's it then.
Thanks
I chose Paladin, some abilities start in double digits. Is this normal?
How did you get your stats?
Ability scores are 3 to 18 before bonuses
We typically recommend you choose either Standard Array (15 14 13 12 10 8) or Point Buy rather than rolling.
So it is just listing the bonuses in case I decide to play as a higher level character?
hello im deciding on what class to make my first character, and i see ranger get trashtalked quite a bit in dnd videos... why is ranger a bad class?
You don't really decide, the DM does. Some adventures/campaigns start at level 1, others at level 3, or whatever.
I see, thanks
13, 16, 11, 11, 14, 14. Is this good, including all the modifiers? I used Point Buy system.
Sure.
K
Ranger really isn't a bad class. At this point it's more of a meme to make fun of them
The ranger published in the Player's Handbook had a lot of situationally useful abilities, and so those depended on your DM's cooperation. The revised ranger abilities from a later book helped even it out to be applicable in multiple scenarios. But it is largely a meme, as dunl said.
A lot of ranger subclasses are really cool, actually.
If a ranger chooses Celestials as their Favored Enemy, for example, it’s not much use if you never fight Celestials.
ah i see, i did hear they are very situational a lot. What later book would that be? my DM has the players handbook and monsters of the multiverse
But if your campaign is all about fighting Celestials, it could be profoundly useful.
Tasha'a Cauldron of Everything.
ok okay i see, do you think they would still be fun to play even if the favored enemy never appears?
I’d personally recommend the Tasha’s version instead. 😅
I've enjoyed all the rangers I've played even before Tasha's revisions.
Favored Foe lets you choose an individual enemy to deal extra damage against, regardless of their creature type.

So it’s more broadly useful, because it puts the choice back in your hands instead of the DM’s.
i guess ill probably pick a different class 😂 i wanted to play as a paladin anyway but i also wanna play as a goblin, and that wouldnt fit the theme too well lol
Sure it would
You could probably tell a pretty interesting story with a goblin paladin.
Play what you want (just talk with your DM on what is allowed in their campaign setting).
What should I choose. Equipment or Gold?
Equipment
I always go equipment.

You can do it here, or in #1075498333705089084.
No one else will see it until you submit it, and then it’ll post in the channel you chose.
Don’t forget to equip your armor/weapons.
Aight
And if you’re gonna use heavy armor and melee weapons, I’d swap the STR and DEX scores.
I’d maybe switch WIS and CON, too, for better HP.
Chain Mail is Heavy ARmor? I'll change it. Thanks
I would recommend 16 11 14 11 13 14
It is, so unlike light or medium armor, it doesn’t benefit from your DEX modifier.
I see.
I swapped Str and Dex
So, if I just override the score, does it affect the other modifiers or do they adjust accordingly?
I'm learning how to take note as a player. What should i take note down?\
Names of NPCs and locations. Any lore.

You write down what you think is relevant.
I am using Chat GPT as a DM. Am I sane?
Idk how it's gonna work, but personally, it feels less emotional as chat GPT is an AI answering questions. DM may put more of human's feelings in it, but at least GPT helps you half of the thingy
It's helping me understand the basics
Have you watched the Handbooker Helper tutorial videos yet?

Well DnDBeyond has this great character creation tool which could just take minutes to create one. It even has a random character creation functionality.

I am a bit new to the game I am a subclass of sorcerer called pyro Manser but some of my friends told me to Multi class it is that even possible
I made my character in DNDBeyond but after i downloaded the pdf and looked at the character sheet there is a lot of stuff i cant understand
Multiclassing exists, yes. Any character can potentially do it.
Officially it’s an optional rule, though, so best to check with your DM first.
They allow it
That video above should explain it all, but is there something specific you had questions about?
is a dragonborn barbarian warlock ok for a character
The next step, then, would be to make sure your character meets the prerequisites.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/customization-options#Prerequisites
It’s doable, but be aware that barbarians can’t cast spells or concentrate on them while they rage.
where do i find a dm
Sure but it's always good to check with your DM and group to make sure it will fit the type of D&D game being played.

Can I mix a Pyromancer and a necromancer
can i add spells from my own
Generally use only official materials until you understand the game better and/or if your group allows homebrew (custom made material)
You can mix any two classes so long as you meet the prerequisites.
You said your pyromancer is a sorcerer, right? And did you mean the wizard’s school of necromancy?
If you have both fire and necronancy spells on your spell list, there's no reason why you can't take some of each. It's just a question of what suits your character. Of course, depending on your class, subclass, feats etc. some spells may be more effective for you than others.
So you’d need at least a 13 CHA and a 13 INT.
I only want to get the raise the dead ability
Did you mean the spell Raise Dead?
Yeah
Then you’d need at least 9 levels in Bard or Cleric.
O #### I just realized that the caricature i am making now has 7(-2) charisma
That’s gonna be rough for a sorcerer.
The inability to multiclass is gonna be the least of your concerns.
What about a wizard cuz I have a 12(+1) in wisdom
Wizards want INT.
Hey
I'm playing a blood hunter based on strength and I don't know which subclass to play
Any recommandations ?
hello
Hi
Raise dead is a 5th level spell to revive a dead person.
a necromancer would usually want Animate Dead, a 3rd level spell that allows you to make zombies/skeletons
how do I play as the honor among thieves characters?
See I am making my caricature around a thri-kreen who can do some magic
can i have a pet hell hound
There are NPC statblocks available for them here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/claim/bundle/dungeons-and-dragons-honor-among-thieves
Thanks!
Creating any of them as a playable character will take some work, and a DM that might allow any special items or abilities.
ok
That’s probably a question for your DM.
I don't know how to further develop my character and I have another session in two hours
ask your DM. there is nothing in the game that just allows you to get one if you want.
that being said, there are a few character options that allow you to have a pet. Drakewarden Ranger, Beastmaster Ranger, Battlesmith Artificer, Wildfire Druid. primarily.
Wildfire Druid and Drakwarden would allow you to work with fire damage on your pet.
omg I want a pet hellhound
What kind of development were you looking for, exactly?
!!!!
I don't know!!!
because this is only my second time playing and I don't know much about the game in general!
Hard to give advice without knowing what you’re looking for. 😅
In what way do you feel your character is underdeveloped?
Are you concerned about your character sheet? Your portrayal of the character? The way your character ties into the story? Something else?
like, portrayal of the character and how the character ties into the story
because I don't know how to portray her and how she ended up in the wild west somewhere
If you want to connect her to the story more, you should speak to your DM about it.
Hi! I have a question is there a special channel for it or could I post the link here? Basically, I wanted feedback on my character and wanted to know if I should change something or not
Since the DM guides the story and knows the most about your world, they can help you find that reason why.
The folks in #character-discussion can help.
Okay thank you!
so she's a high elf/druid named salvia osina
she's a folk hero who helped cleanse the polluted rivers with druidic magic in a different region
uh
that's like, all I've got
ooh okay!
I think a thri kreen rogue would do well for me
So if I was your DM, I’d immediately start looking into why these rivers were polluted.
Hey so I’ve just joined server and am new to dnd all together but was hoping this would be somewhere I could find people willing to play online with me so I can get more familiar?
Maybe there’s a reason there that ties into the story ahead.
someone else in the group suggested that backstory to me and I just kind of rolled with it
It’s good! As a DM, I like a good Swiss cheese backstory: one that’s full of holes.
Because then it’s easier to work with the player and make it part of the story.
Am also hoping people could help me get to grips with how to get started on this server? I’ve read the rules and such but not sure where to start looking for games to join?
Check out #find-a-game for info on finding a game.
Thank you
so like last session we did the intro and everyone was in a bar
I don't know exactly what happened but when someone recognized my character's name they rolled for how the bar would react and it was a 19 so like, literally everyone started screaming and applauding
someone got so excited they pooped themself
so she is very well known
As for actual roleplaying, this article might help.

Hello fellow new comers
How do you do?
Hello 👋 I am extremely new to the DND community, and I desperately need to find some friends who are willing to teach me how to play. Anything would be extremely appreciated ☺️
The quick-start guide below explains how to find a game here on our server. Check out #find-a-game for the channel rules, FAQ, and off-server game options.

What are feats
It’s an optional rule that lets you choose additional features instead of an ability score improvement.
Some give you extra spells or new combat abilities, for example.
Ah I see, it;s not standard.
Yes and no. 😅
While it’s technically an optional rule and therefore up to the DM, I’d say it’s rare to find one that doesn’t allow it.
Oh
I’m not sure if I’d be accepted into any games since I know next to nothing, but I will definitely give it a shot! Thank you 🙏
There’s plenty of beginner-friendly games out there! Good luck, though!
I feel very stupid 😂 Possibly from lack of sleep. How does one create a post? Do I just write out the command and send it like a normal message in one of the discussions?
Head to #1075498333705089084 and start typing looking for with a slash before it. Select the appropriate one, and it'll take you to a form to fill out.
The full instructions are in #find-a-game.
Correct - just some sort of game the character can play around with - could be dice, could be cards, could be D&D monopoly
It's more for roleplay, there isn't any mechanics (unless your DM creates some)
Gaming Set. This item encompasses a wide range of game pieces, including dice and decks of cards (for games such as Three-Dragon Ante). A few common examples appear on the Tools table, but other kinds of gaming sets exist. If you are proficient with a gaming set, you can add your proficiency bonus to ability checks you make to play a game with that set. Each type of gaming set requires a separate proficiency.

Maybe someone in this channel can help answer my question as I guess it kind of fits the newbie category. I tried asking in the character channel but got no response, but I have a pretty solid personality description of a character I’m working on and need help on how to word that description into simple sentences for the personality traits, ideals, flaws, and bonds on the character sheet
That’s my original post
im like super super new but i came up with a cool campaign idea what should i do about this i really want to dm it but i also need to learn
I would say checking out those links above from the bot under the “for DMs” to learn more. After, if you don’t have a group, go to the looking for players channel to gather one. I’ve never been a DM though so that’s the limit of my helpfulness

Hey people!
Some of my friends and I (4 total) have decided to give dnd a whirl to see if its our thing, none of us have ever played before
Is the lost mines + starter set a good jumping off point? Google gives me infinite opinions so I have analysis paralysis 🙃
Both versions of the starter set are good for new players
Both ?
The other version is Dragons of Stormwrecker Isle
It's a wonderful starting point!
Ah I saw that was part of the starter set -> https://dnd.wizards.com/products/starter-set
Is that essentially the newer "starter campaign" ?
You can get lost mines for free (as well as the free basic rules) on D&D Beyond. You can also grab pre-gen characters on d&d beyind as well
Yeah that's the new starter set
ah cool cool
I was going to pick up the kit anyway, mostly for the physical dice and rules
but if the Stormwrecker Isle is a good first campaign Ill skip the mines
Thanks @versed nymph + @pseudo frost ❤️
It's fun!
👀
You're interchangeable with WX now
Hi! Is anyone here? 😄
Nope. I'm there
Lol
Hey, this is weird but
My TikTok algorithm started to show me lots of DnD content and now I'm interested :p
Lol not as weird as you may think!

Ty so much 😄
Lost mines was the first one I played in and I had a good time in it, so I agree it’s a good start. I haven’t tried the new starter set but I do want to
As long as you have a little patience to learn the basics, it’s definitely a fun hobby that gives you so much creative freedom
Thanks for the tip! I will definitely take my time to learn
Just ordered the (new) starter set, stormwreck + some cheap (but pretty ) dice sets 🙂
It starts with one set of dice & before you know it you have 10
Actually here for a similar reason lol
I’d love to give dnd a shot I just made a character on dnd beyond (no idea what I’m doing)
Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
yo is there anyone who could explain how to make a character and get started here
lmao im new and have only ever played half a campaign
nvm i figured it out
I just made a character but have no idea if I did it right
Lmao me either but I wanna try this so bad
I think we need a DM
I looked for campaigns online but most of them cost money to join
sadly ye
I ain’t know that so bein a DM is like a job kinda? Hahah
i mean if we could get a dm and a few more people we could do a learning campaign
I’d be down for this that’s kinda what I was lookin for. I see you can technically play alone but like
too clueless for that lol if I ran like one “tutorial” campaign I’d be set ish 😂
Maybe try read the rule book first and check the guide on the website
I’m reading the rule book
Well the first 4 chapters like the other guy said lol
I got through character creation that much is familiar
what is it about
like does it have a specific map designed etc

does anyone know how many spells to a book
It isn't stated in the rules how many pages or even how much of a page a single spell takes up, it is stated however, that a spellbook has 100 pages
It will be up to your DM as to how much space a spell in a spellbook takes up, or even if they want you to worry about such things
Tiny details like this are often ignored by tables for the sake of getting on with the more intersting parts of adventuring life 👌
ok bc its only allowing me 3 spells in my book
When you say "it's" are you referring to dndbeyond or a different character sheet app?
yes sorry dnd beyond
In the spellcasting feature of your class it will say how many spells you learn at first level and how many you can prepare
Is your character a wizard?
yes
At first level you should be able to learn 6 spells, and prepare a number of them equal to your Intelligence + Wizard level
If you can only add 3 it might be because you are selecting your cantrips, of which you get 3 at first level, try looking for a tab labelled "1st" to see the 1st level spells
oh gotcha thx also what am i allowed and dissalowed for having items and currency wise
you get what your class options + background gives you OR if you take the gold option you can buy whatever you can afford.
However the gold option usually requires DM input as they will want to see the rolls.
For a wizard your class options are:
- select one: (a) a quarterstaff or (b) a dagger
- AND select one: (a) a component pouch or (b) an arcane focus
- AND select one: (a) a scholar’s pack or (b) an explorer’s pack
- AND A spellbook
plus your background's equipment
ok last thing my race allows for the learning of "burning hands" will i need to add this to my spell book or no
what race?
fire genasi
No, you do not add that to your spellbook, you do add it to your available spells to cast, but it is special in that you can cast it for free once per day AND/OR power it with spell slots.
But that is not until level 3.
Are you level 3?
Assume level 1
ok
you do not get Burning hands from your race until level 3.
Do not
ok thx
Also, when you say "Fire Genasi" you need to list the book it comes from
There are multiple versions of the Fire Genasi race
how do i know what book its from
How about this...quote the entire rule for Burning Hands, that will tell me which one it is
You know the produce flame cantrip. Once you reach 3rd level, you can cast the burning hands spell once with this trait as a 1st-level spell, and you regain the ability to cast it this way when you finish a long rest. Constitution is your spellcasting ability for these spells.
called reach to the blaze
Elemental Evil Player's Companion
So ignore the part I said about using spell slots to power it.
Mordenkainen Presents - Monsters of the Multiverse has an updated version of the Fire Genasi with a much better version of Reach to the Blaze.
Buy the book? I don't know where you are creating your character.
dndbeyond
I think you can buy the race all by itself on DnD Beyond, or you might need to buy the book. I don't use DnD Beyond.
hmmmm i think im just gonna keep this race because i dont really feel like bying somethign lmao
nods
if your DM has the books they can share them with you
then you can update your race
gotcha thx
ok damn well i have my character now lmao but i know for sure i have made it incorrectly lmao
but its whatever ig
post the link, people can review it and point out errors
Did you roll your ability scores?
yes
Ok, first thing...most DMs want to see the rolls. So use Point Buy or Standard Array until your DM tells you how they want the ability scores generated.
It would suck if you rolled a nice set with lots of 18s only to be told "nope, didn't see it".
Since Point Buy takes longer to set up than Standard Array, I generally suggest using Point Buy.
lmao
Second: Why a 14 strength? Wizards don't really need strength, it is a dump stat for them.
Unless you plan on multiclassing?
Same for Wisdom...why a 16 Wisdom and not Intelligence?
Intelligence should be your highest stat, as a Wizard
gotcha
For Wizards you generally want:
Intelligence
Dexterity
Constitution
Wisdom
Charisma/Strength
in that order
so what would you recommend my spread look like
Well, using the rolls you got:
14, 13, 12, 13, 16, 15 (these are what you had before your racial bonuses)
I would do the following:
Strength: 13
Dexterity: 16
Constitution: 14+2(race)
Intelligence: 15+1(race)
Wisdom: 13
Charisma: 12
Only reason for a 13 in Strength rather than a 12 is since you are unlikely to ever improve Strength, Wisdom, or Charisma it won't really matter and a 13 in Strength will give you slightly more carrying capacity than a 12 in Strength.
(odd numbers normally don't do anything compared to an even number, Strength is the exception)
actually...moment
it caps me out at 15 for everything using point buy
there, now you have a 16 in Dex and 16 in Int
correct, Point Buy has a maximum starting score of 15.
point buy maxes at 15 but you also have a min value possible
But unless your DM has told you which method they are using any rolls you make may get thrown out.
rolling for it, you can get better but also worse
It is just better to have your character set up for Point Buy, then throw that out when your DM says "Roll"
You lose nothing that way
ok gotcha thx
Regarding your pack choice...I never recommend Scholar's Pack. Most characters are adventurers, they need adventuring gear which can be found in the Explorer's Pack
yes, a peice of paper and pen might come in handy sometime, but when you are out in the wilderness you may want food, water, torches, and rope instead.
gotcha so should i go for a component pouch or an arcane focus
6 of one, half a dozen of the other
I typically prefer arcane focus for stylistic reasons, but mechanically they are basically the same
what does a component puch do
It holds the items you need to cast spells with a material component
So if a spell says you need a pinch of sand, that is in your component pouch
OR you can use an Arcane Focus instead, your choice
ah gotcha
Regarding your spells: you are missing FOUR first level spells
you get 3 (plus the spell from your race) Cantrips
you get 6 first level spells.
Also, equip your Quarterstaff so that the attack shows up in your available attacks.
what does prepairing a spell do
readies it to be used
Cantrips do not need to be prepared
But your first level spells, out of the 6 you know you can only prepare 1+intelligence modifier at a time. (Should be four spells if your Intelligence is 16)
yes it is 4
I suggest having a couple of ritual spells in your book, you don't have to prepare those to use them
You just have to take a long time to cast them
Example: Alarm and Detect Magic
so which ones should i prepare
Well which 1st level spells do you have?
absorb elements, detect magic, false life, floating disk, identify, mage armour, magic missile, shield
I wouldn't bother with some of those
such as
Absorb Elements: you generally won't need this until level 3-5
False Life: also a spell I don't generally recommend for a level 1 Wizard
Floating Disk...that spell is ok, it is a Ritual spell
Identify: don't need it due to the rules on identifying items
you don't need Identify to identify magic items
Spend an hour with the item, you identify it without the spell
Mage Armor is good, Shield is good. Magic Missile is ok, used to be better in previous editions.
I would 100% grab Sleep
one of the absolute best spells early on
Burning Hands is really good too, and it will be better than your racial version (due to Constitution vs Intelligence)
so get the burning hands
Can undead skeletons you raise use magic or only magic items
Thunderwave is also an excellent spell early on, but can be tricky for you to use as a Wizard
They have no native means to use magic. And as for magic items...such as?
wait so are you saying to get burning hands or stick with the ones i get at lvl 3
What is your constitution score?
What is your Intelligence score?
Is that after point buy?
yes
What I mean can a skeleton use an enchanted sword with no problem
Can I see your updated scores please?
Sweet
but they cannot use items that require spell abilities, such as a scroll
Right right
str 8, dex 14, con 13, int 15, wis 11, cha 11
what do even numbers do
Ok:
8-9 = -1
10-11 = +0
12-13 = +1
14-15 = +2
16-17 = +3
and so on
so as you can see...an 11 is the same as a 10
an ability score gives you a bonus or penalty
it is the bonus or penalty that gets used most of the time, not the raw ability score
So when we say I have a strength bonus of +2, that means my score is a 14 or 15 and that gives me a +2 to add to any strength checks, strength based attacks, etc.
so if i bump the wisdom and charisma down by 1 i can add one to dex to make 15 and 1 to con to make it 14
it is the bonus/penalty that matters. 🙂
(Ability Score - 10) / 2 = Ability Modifier
Ability modifiers are used to many every d20 roll imaginable. They determine how well these rolls do, or how terribly they will go for you.
Playing with your stats you could get:
Strength 8
Dexterity 14
Constitution 16 (14+2race)
Intelligence 16 (15+1race)
Wisdom 10
Charisma 10
You could drop charisma to 8 and increase Wisdom to 12 if you'd like. Wisdom is the stronger stat
gotcha thx
Circling back to Burning Hands, yeah I'd leave that until you are level 3 and get it from your race now that your Con bonus equals your Int bonus (both are +3)
I'd pick up Thunderwave instead, it is a good substitute
How thunderwave works: imagine a 15' by 15' cube, you stand on one side of it...and a wave of energy moves away from you to the other side of the cube
doing damage to creatures and possibly knocking them flying
ok i have it so which ones do i prepare
which 6 spells did you choose?
wait so why is false life bad
generally, it presumes you are going to get hurt. If you are getting hurt you are not staying out of combat, as a wizard
true
you have limited spells per day:
Would you rather hurt the enemy?
Would you rather add some bonus hitpoints to yourself for an hour on the off chance you get hurt?
And honestly, if you are going to go for a defensive spell, Mage Armor is better
gotcha
it lasts for 8 hours
Mage Armor is a nice catch-all, and when all else fails... Magic Missile.
so i have absorb elements, detect magic, floating disk, mage armour, magic missile, shield, sleep, and thunderwave
Again, I wouldn't get Absorb elements at level 1...it won't be used
gotcha
and you have too many spells, you need to cut that down to 6
Detect Magic
Mage Armor
Magic Missile
Shield
Sleep
Thunderwave
you don't really need Floating Disk
Might wanna move this to #character-discussion
oooo flying disk
lots of people have carrying capacity, carrying loot out of a dungeon is the main reason for the spell
Is Variant Askonoir is normal race I can pick without DM approval?
Or whatever it's called
Aasimar
so now how would one get started after making a character lmao
No, that's a Dungeon Master's Guide option intended to be an example for DMs on how to make a race. It's not a player facing (by default) option
hullloo I'm sorta new to DnD but since i'm a absolute rpg mmo nerd I'd thought I would give this a try
bro that just me
great minds think alike
frrr got like 7k hours on elder scrolls online
Hello, I am playing a swashbuckler rogue and I was thinking about multiclassing into something else after level 7. At first I thought bard but my +1 charisma would be a bit limiting for that so I thought of going into ranger instead. What would be better, gloomstalker or swarmkeeper? Or another subclass?
What are your stats as you need at least a 13 in them to multiclass
I got 16 dex and 13 wis so I can do that
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/customization-options look for prerequisites you’d need a cha of 13 to go bard
I have 13 charisma too but I want to go for ranger as my question says
Hi folks! If you're starting to dive into character details and builds, I'm going to ask you to move this discussion over to #character-discussion
Oh sorry didn't know!
No worries! We just want to keep this channel open for new to D&D folks and #character-discussion would be the best place to handle "how do I build this character" or similar character-based discussion.
i still dont know how to play
Well a good first step is to give the actual rules a skim: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
okay
Then maybe check out some videos: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN
Maybe after that watch some folks playing D&D.
Then try your hand at making a character (check out the first few chapters of those free rules) - DnDBeyond has a useful character builder tool (and mobile app too): https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/builder
Then find a group to play with! (the most important and unfortunately most challenging step - the biggest monster in D&D is schedules)
okay thanks
Is there any online tool or application to play dnd with random people online? I’m interested in DnD but I know almost nothing about it other than the basics and nobody in my town seems to play it so I’m wondering if there’s a way to matchmake with other people or something
Also check out #find-a-game
Some Virtual Tabletops (VTTs) such as Roll20 have looking for game options. Some of those might include pickup games.
However, those games are usually with a character ready to go. You may not get a lot of help as a new player in a pickup game.
How long does command undead last
hello im new to this whole dnd stuff but would love to start and maybe get some guldens
Where are you seeing this spell? I can't find it in any of the sources I am looking at.
However, the spell should say how long it lasts under Duration

can i use guns such as revolvers in a bonus action?
is there durability
Generally no. Tho there are specific feats and other features that may let you, depending on if your DM allows guns in the campaign.
thx
Apologies, control undead
Hi all
So furthest I’ve done is create name need to decide on what character and how to play pls help
Have you read the free basic rules?
guys a small question. I have read and seen through some gameplay but I still dont get why do you need to roll a d20 dice before an attack roll. Ik if u roll a 20 it means a crit and confirm hit, but what if i got a 10 or something
I’m going through lost mine phandelver book online through dndbeyond if that’s the one you mean?
That’s a starter campaign if you look at the pins in this channel there is a link to the free basic rules and some other useful stuff
To see if you hit at all
You make an attack roll using a d20 and compare your results against enemy AC to sed if you hit at all
Only after you hit you roll damage with different dice
So if your d20 roll is lower than the enemy AC is decided as a miss?
Yep, the roll (with modifiers) needs to be equal to or higher than the AC.
