If you know how to make a character and the basics of the rules, the next step would be to find a group/game.

The quick-start guide below explains how to find a game here on our server. Check out #find-a-game for the channel rules, FAQ, and off-server game options.
• #750812887697588356 has players who are ready to join a game.
• #looking-for-players has unpaid DMs offering a traditional D&D experience: a single party playing together through a shared adventure.
• #looking-for-community has free community-style games like West Marches, One-Shot locators, and more. These are easy to join and regularly active, but you might play with different people each session.
• #paid-looking-for-game has games that require payment to join. These games might offer a more professional DM experience or more consistent participation.
The best place to start is by replying to the messages that have already been posted. You can use the thread attached to the post or send the user a direct message.
To post your own instead, simply type /looking-for, select the channel you want, and send.
whats kind of best to start looking for community or looking for dm
They're just different, so calling one best is kind of tough.
well i cant get out anymore, and am old man so kinda lost ith computers but want to play online since cant go to games anymore
If you are looking for games to join, you can post in #750812887697588356 and search through the posts in both #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community. Being active in your search is gonna find a game faster than being passive and hoping a dm reaches out to you
k thanks
You just need a web browser to play online using a virtual tabletop (VTT), such as Roll20, owlbear.rodeo, and Foundry.
On April 7-9, local game stores in the U.S. and Canada are hosting a series of learn-to-play events, and you’re invited! Get the full details here.
Does playing as DM dimish the enjoyment you'd get if you'd later join a game as a player since you know what's about to happen in that campaign?
For prewritten campaigns? Hmm. It's a difficult one. But it can be the same if a player also plays a campaign twice. Usually then best thing to do is warn the DM currently running that you have experience with the module and know what's coming up but you don't know what your group will chose and the DM can also mix things up knowing they need to keep you on your toes.
It really depends on you as a person. If you are open with your DM about your knowledge, but can avoid using it in character or if you actively support and enable the DM running, you will be fine. If you can't, well you may not have the most fun
It can be hard to not meta game sometimes if you have knowledge of the whole adventure. how much this ruins the game for you or the table depends on the person
ohi 🙂
are there online games you can just join at random like now? i've heard of zombie horde etc....

thanks, i guess i'm thinking quicker on-going things online......maybe that's too difficult for people to join spur of the moment
It does usually take a while to join most games, even AL (Adventure League, official organised play) or oneshots, as usually there is some kind of session 0 or screening process where people make sure everyone is on the same page, is a good fit, and has a 'legal' character so on.
right right hmm giving me ideas, thank you 🙂
Oh lord idk where to start

https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLQMqiULo_05P90SzHdyyVIcz4TGZApQ5Lb. How to make a character

thanks, i have a character for my friend's game tomorrow.....i was hoping there was an option that i guess doesn't exist online 😄
Heckin I have a little character sheet my friend gave me but I don’t even know where to begin tbh 💀 especially with stats and all that
I’m tryna do research on drows rn it’s complicated 😭
ah i watched a few elf lore videos that had a bit on drows but recommended dedicated videos lol
mine is high elf
alchemist artificer
That’s what I’m getting into rn I’ve always love dark elves ngl I think I’m getting myself confused rn cus im reading about the underdark rn 😭
Idk if I’m supposed to learn lore first or learn how to play
my group is mainly newb so we're learning to play first and developing our roleplay and lore after.....i'm just trying to get ahead lol
I think I’m gravitating towards ranger maybe playing it safe with hunter 💀
Heckkkk that sounds good my friends are newbs too playing with experienced people and they kinda just told me to play with them and just sent me a character sheet 😭 idk what to do
i thought about what i wanted to do (support my group and make jokes) and then i decided what classes and races mixed well together
for example high elf has INT and other good stuff as an artificer
Heck oki so learn about the races first… then classes and then see what sticks out… figure out what I want my character oh heck
Idk after that ngl
if you really want to be drow yeah look at the bonuses and stuff
i think they play aggressive, deceptive roles and whatnot

I read that some of them can be a tiny bit good 😭 I kinda gravitate towards darker solitary characters ngl the deceptive part might be a issue
a drow can have any personality you want.
if your drow grew up in the cult of lolth then that would affect their personality but they might be making a conscious effort to distance themselves from their past too
Heck is there any typa website I can look at about that kinda stuff? So far just been watching YouTube videos about this stuff
They keep saying drow are seductive etc
I suspect they keep talking about dominant drow culture instead of inherit characteristics (I hope)
the only free source that comes to mind is he forgotten realms wiki but that has a lot of old lore mixed in with new
my bad yeah i was thinking dominant cultures and how they're often attacked
Oooo thank you thank you 😭 the lore is kinda overwhelming and it’s making everything really confusing ngl
there is also very new lore about different drow cultures that arent from the underdark but community reception to that has been mixed and there isnt much material on them
forgotten realms lore is something that has been build upon, revised and reworked for decades
I’m ngl I think you’re onto something with this I like it
So with the new new lore is that where the homebrew characters come from or is that a whole separate thing
when I say new lore I still mean official material. Not sure what you mean with homebrew characters
I think I’m getting that confused 😭 my friends are tryna tell me about homebrew characters and I don’t think I fully get what’s going on
I dont know what a homebrew character is supposed to be. Every character is unique to the person making them
Think of homebrew as mods for the game.
You have the official game (PHB, DMG, MM), then the DLCs and expansions (The other books), and then you have the community mods (Homebrew)
there are homebrew classes and races, maybe you friends mean that?
Homebrew characters would then be characters made using these mods- homebrew races, classes, so on.
So like in Minecraft how u have the base game but u can add ur own twist to it and customize it from what the vanilla game
hey!
I've been interested in D&D for a long while now but haven't been able to find any game groups locally so I was wondering if it's possible to find some game I could join as an total beginner from here?

Oh i also know of 5e which i think i could use my characters from the elder scrolls games with. Could i start with that or start with regular dnd
Ah so 5e is '5th edition' and is the current edition of D&D. So is regular D&D in that sense.
Oh i thought it was the homebrew version
The older editions of D&D (1e and 2e, sometimes refered to as 'AD&D', 3.0/3.5 and 4e) are still played and if you think that they'd be much better suited to what you want after looking into them, might be worth checking out. But 5e is the most accessible and supported right now.
Whats the homebrew version and would it be too complicated to start with homebrew?
There is also currently right now, playtesting for 'One D&D' which is basically going to be updated 5e. So learning 5e won't lock you out.
Homebrew is just 'fan made content'. It covers a lot of things.
I'd advise against homebrew for your first time playing, as it can be wildly varied in it's balance and quality.

I've played 5 adventures in Adventurers League, which have been great. I created my character by following the rules in PHB and Basic Rules. Without knowing much about the game, I created my character's backstory based on Krynn in Dragonlance. I'm not using Dragonlance rules, just the locations and history. Is using a backstory from Dragonlance legal for Adventurers League?
I’d suggest asking the folks in #adventurers-league.

hello
Hello there
I am pretty new to D&D and while I have been consuming a lot of content over the last few years I have never found a way to get into it as a player, is there anything I should know before trying to get into a game?
dont get obsessed over magic items and/or monsters
my first dm game was ruined because i liked putting way to powerful monsters into my game
because they looked cool and stuff
dont do that, i prioritize a lot of easy combat over very little difficult combat
that is good to know, and I will keep it in mind when I'll get into DMing, which I only plan doing after gathering some experience as a Player. Though I was more asking as a player, if there is anything in the process before joining a game, like character creation or something like that of which I should know about. Still thank you for the advise :D
oh yeah thats a good idea
to start as a player
i started as DM because i didnt have a party to join
all of us were new haha
but good luck with your dnd adventures
as long as you know the rules and are into a little roleplaying you should be fine! 🙂
Thank you very much, I myself don't have a group yet, but rather plan on finding one, if here or somewhere else is not of matter. Thank you for the good wishes, I hope to make D&D a long lasting hobby of mine
My best advice would be to find a consistent party that you gel with
The last four words being the most important
So basically look that the people I play with I also enjoy being around?
Yeah, and vice versa. I find the people you're playing with and your relationships with them are just as important as every other aspect of the game
In my experience it's the determining factor between whether I love what I'm doing or whether I want to stop
I thought so, after all that applies for all kind of games, if you go play an FPS with team mechanics and you and your team don't get along together it won't be half as good as it would be if you all enjoy being around one another
On April 7-9, local game stores in the U.S. and Canada are hosting a series of learn-to-play events, and you’re invited! Get the full details here.
How many hit points should pcs have?
A good example I can give is roleplaying. I like to roleplay, so when I'm playing a good character I'll be a supportive friend to the party, and when I'm an evil character (and directly opposed to them) I won't be
I've had issues with this, because sometimes the party takes it as a personal attack on them when I do or say evil/non-friendly things- and from my PoV that's not what I'm trying to do, I'm just playing my character
So I think knowing your fellow players and feeling comfortable around them and what they're going to do is really important
Good to know, I love acting as a whole and have been in a few small plays before, it's the main reason why I wanted to start playing D&D, the complexity of a world that a video game just can't quite replicate. It sounds so magical and I can't wait to get into my first game. Thank you very much!
No problem! I'm speaking from experience here, simply because I've had issues with it in the past.
One of my biggest regrets in general when I've played D&D (especially when playing with people I don't know) is not making sure we all have a mutual understanding of each others' playstyles first
Unless you have a hobby for filling out character sheets, I would suggest a lot 😂
Oh also on the topic of first game, do you know some ways to find groups I'd be able to join, I haven't quite figured out how to get there.
Hi, Is this where the newbies go? 😮
Oh sorry, you meant as a DM I see! My bad
Well depends on the class, race and general campaign, I think. Honestly I just feel my way around.
I believe so :)

I dunno where I was before but there was no conversation there so I tried the channels on the side and now here I am.
I just joined the server myself less than 20 minutes ago so I have no idea how the bots work, but if you're looking for a group I'd be more than willing to join you fwiw
also I dunno how to even start.
I think in this case I'd be joining you, since I am the newbie, but yes I'd be more than willing to play with you, though just so you know I am in Europe so if you have a different timezone playing together might be complicated
Ahh I see! Well my timezone is different, but my sleep schedule is less stable than a wild mage on a Monday morning (heh), so I think we'd be fine
You're new to D&D? :o
Well if that is the case, I'll add you on discord and we can look how we could start a campaign or anything in that direction. Like I said I am completely new to finding games so I'd be relying mostly on you when it comes to making a party/finding other ppl to play with.
I detect like.. a joking sarcasm.. but yeah I am 😅
Sounds great :D
Sorry if I sounded sarcastic, I meant it genuinely
Alright, I sent you a friend request :D
It has been accepted
all good no worries,,
lemme join plz
Hello there, I'd guess you are also a new player
woah

characters can die?!
well like I said in the message above, I have basically zero knowledge on how to organize parties for campaigns, so I think you'd be better off asking esper
They sure can😅
but I just made mine this morning.. :c
I wanted to try a cleric for my first time. :3
ah
oh also I wanted to ask... so we have to pay irl when joining a campaign?
ohhh i seee..
I literally just, I kid you not maybe 10-15 minutes, made a D&D Beyond account and want to learn how to play. I played once a couple years ago but I was walked through it by my friend who asked me to play because he needed one more person. Any tips on how to get started and how to make a character would be really appreciated.
You can create a character here.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/builder
If you select “Show Help Text” before you start, it will walk you through each step.
Okay, thank you so much.
Generally it just follows the first few chapters of the Basic Rules, in order.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
When you start at the settings page, you’ll probably want to ask your group what to put.
Or just leave it at the defaults for now, and ask later.
Okay, thanks.
And we’re happy to answer any other questions you have along the way, too.
Thank you, there's definitely going to be some.
say, the cleric I made only had access to the life domain but I really wanted to do trickery but it doesnt show up on the list.. instead i think I have to.. go to the marketplace??
Yeah, each class has one free subclass by default.
Trickery Domain can be found in the Player’s Handbook.
?phb
The Player's Handbook (PHB) is an official sourcebook containing the full core rules of the game. The book is everything a player needs to create heroic characters for Dungeons & Dragons the world’s greatest roleplaying game. Some of this content is available for free as a part of the Basic Rules. Learn more: https://dndbeyond.link/discordPHB
You can get just the domain, if that’s all you want. Whatever you spend gets credited toward the cost of the book itself, too.
But the book itself is also on sale for 40% off, sooo…
Hello what is the thing in dnd called where levels 1-5 are “menial” threats, level 10 is country level threats, and 20+ are planet ending threats ?
I think ima quit dnd
Why??
Not that often if you are smart about it. If you think your character might not make it, its okay to retreat to plot your next move!
Do you mean something like Tiers of play?
Tiers of Play
Tier 1 — Levels 1 to 4: Local Heroes
Tier 2 — Levels 5 to 10: Heroes of the Realm
Tier 3 — Levels 11 two 17: Masters of the Realm
Tier 4 — Levels 17 to 20: Masters of the World
This is cool I mean for the threat level
But that is also cool
Do you mean with encounters?
that would be Easy, Medium, Hard and Deadly
hmm im looking more so that it says "x is a country-level threat"
but i think the tiers is what it is
Yeah, I think that is what you are looking for.
ty!
That combined with Challenge Ratings (CR).
Ok
CR 1 creatures are supposed to be facing a LVL 1 party for example. But often you have to change the encounter, because CR isnt always accurate, and depends on number of party members as well as some other things
How do I learn the game without anyone to play with? Because I don't know anyone who plays and I don't think I have the availability and knowledge enough to try and find someone here to play with.

Okay thank you.
Idk im new and im getting stressed on making charachter sheets evry video is soooo confusing and i idk how to make one
The videos on yt dont help at all
Did you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hD-LWHhiseE&list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN&index=1
Those videos are very friendly for new players.
So I've been playing for about a few months and my group meets infrequently due to scheduling issues. I'm not wanting to leave however I am wanting to do more stuff with my freetime so I was wondering would it be OK if I tried making my own campaign and being a dm for a group.
My school's club told me that I can do it, so I'm just seeing if it's more difficult for a new player to dm
The most experienced DMs were newbies themselves. You have to start somewhere and you can only get experience by doing it.
Being a DM is just another (fun) way to play D&D - I suggest trying it!
If you are interested in DMing, head on over to #dm-discussion to ask questions and for advice.
Thank you
Do you have a local games store near you? Get the dndbeyond app it’s really good for new comers.
Yea i do do they have tuts on how to fill put character sheets?
What have you got on your character sheet so far? Where are you stuck?

K ima use it
Yea i wanted a druid tiefling
If you're going to create a group I'd be interested in joining. I'm brand new and learning with people sounds like fun.
you can DM me and I will help you if you need any
Ok thank you so much
Is there like restrictions on character creation that aren't automatically imbedded in dnd beyond
Yea i think its broken i have the app and when i chose custom to make a character it takes me to a white screen but still in the app it may be my internet
Its working now
I mean for example skill points and equipment list or does it only allow to use the amount that is the on the base level
What you trying to do add extra weapons, put proficiency in different skills
Just trying to create the character for first game, just want to make sure I do it right
Is arcana skill good for druid tiefling?
Do you have a DM? Are you in a game
Can be, depends on how you want to play your character
Alright
What does the nature skill do?
I want to play like a tiefling who was abandoned bc of his species and the nature spirits raised him and has a deep connection with the forest and animals
it’s your knowledge about plants and such
Ok ty
terrain animals knowledge and such
You can find descriptions for each of the skills here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/using-ability-scores#UsingEachAbility
There’s no right or wrong choice, though!
Just pick whatever you think best fits your character.
Did you have a question about part of the text of the Sage background?
Did you read the text for them from the books?
he is a nerd basically
Ok tyy
I don't have the book
Okk ty
Haunted One is generally intended for horror campaigns.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/backgrounds/haunted-one
hello hello so im making my first character and im having trouble choosing which class fits here the best
she's someone who bends reality so it would be either a wizard or bard but they use a paintbrush to do so, so idk which class I should choose because of that
in what way do they bend reality
with illusions? with creating stuff? there is lots of ways of bending it
do they bend reality by looking into the future? do they bend reality by bending time?
do they bend reality by raising the dead?
do they make the enemy assume they are bending reality
well I had the idea of certain colors doing different things
for example if red would be painted on someone or something it would damage them
if green is painted on a living being it heals, and if on a dead beaing in manipulates the corpes
maybe white could have something to do with time, maybe manipulating a stage of growth in someone
sry for taking so long to respond lol
hello, i am partly new to dnd. i know the rules, etc etc, but never found a group to play with, in turn, never actually playing. I have the essentials kit and access to DnD beyond and stuff

I like it nice concept, a bard may fit you get some healing and damaging spells
The specific mechanics you're describing don't really match any of the established classes, sadly
And wizards don’t have healing spells.
yeah that's what I was thinking
but a bard seems to make more sense, but she just had a paintbrush instead of an instrument
ohhhh ok
YES IM DONEEEEE
Good afternoon or evening Adventurers. My friend is hosting a D&D 5e game for those who are new to roleplaying and D&D and I'm looking for 3 NEW players while they are working on the short quest after character creation. We planned on starting at <t:1680982200:f> or <t:1680982200:R>.
(We will use roll 20)
(1/3)
How I join
The Bard College Of Creation might suit your concept thematically, maybe see if your DM will let you use some form of painting/drawing tools as your spellcasting focus instead of a musical instrument
Go for it using a paint brush as a arcane focus is a great idea
niceee ty ty
Cough wither and bloom (not strictly healing but they get hp)
Anybody else?
Hi! My names Quinn (21 he/him). I'm a new player wanting to find a game that can happen on weekdays and that would give me a more efficient learning and playing experience. I have a Roll20 account and have started learning to play on there, but the last game I played, the DM & other players didn't explain it very well. I also have a character sheet ready and waiting to be used on D&D Beyond

They are new - please cut them some slack and help them learn
I watched a vid and it showed all the classes and where u should put it in wisdom and intellegence
Idk tbh
For druids, you usually want to have high wisdom (good for your spell casting)
So I change it to wisdom right
yep
what's the difference between wisdom and intelligence
Alright Ty I'm a go fix it
Did you roll stats or use point buy ?
Standard array
intelligence is your book smarts, wisdom is your perception, your common sense and intuition
Intelligence is knowing a tomato’s is a fruit. Wisdom is knowing not to put tomato in a fruit salad
Wisdom is practical knowledge (learned from experience)
Intelligence is more like book/theoretical knowledge and maybe how to connect things together.
What should be my too scores for my ability score?
The joke answer as DyingNoob already answered properly: Intelligence is knowing Frankenstein was not the monster, Wisdom is knowing that Frankenstein was a monster
Like highest wisdom but then what's the next what stats make my race/class better
so if you looked at my previous messages do you think I should invest in wisdom or intelligence? I think intelligence but that's just a guess
dexterity and constitution just so you live longer
Ok ty
dexterity decrease the chance to get hit and constitution is your hp
Equip your armour and weapons too
Sorry I just popped in and don't have the context for what you're referring to. What class are you playing?
Strength or Intelligence. Probably Strength as you shouldn't really need it much as a Druid
ohh sorry sorry
it's kinda complicated I think it would be better for you to look at what I messaged before than for me to clutter channel more
At the top of each class description is a Quick Build guide that will suggest which ability scores to prioritize.
hello
they are both viable, think if your character is more dumb or weak
sure go ahead
For a Bard, it says this:
First, Charisma should be your highest ability score, followed by Dexterity.
i would put more proficiencies in skills such as perception/insight
as they are wisdom related
and often used
is dexterity sort of nimbleness and stamina
just general movement themed stuff
Okay
Drop con and int to 12 and get your wisdom to 16
dexterity is how you agile you are
I'm gonna change it now
wait point buy?
You want even numbers
How do I change it to16
Your doing point buy yes?
Nope standard arrangement y idk how point buy works it seems confusing
This auto correct is killing me
Standard array is fine. As you level up there will be times you can improve your attribute scores (ASI's it's often referred to)
Lemme turn it off
just remember to prepare your spells
I did? Did i not prepare them
Ok i did strenght 8 dexterity 15 con 12 int 12 wis 15 cha 8 Btw im druid tiefling
Do i need to fix anything?
That looks like a good start.

my character can have pets that fight with them right?
That's something to ask your dm about
I was wondering that 2
I don't have one yet :<
Same lol
Only certain classes can have animals that attack/participate in combat, rules as written.
That said, check with your DM. Also note that many DM's will target/attack pets if they are active participants in combat.
mhm mhm
Noncombat pets may not survive battles, especially in later tiers where magic attacks can be very deadly (see Fireball).
beloved pets should probably not be out on dangerous adventures with you
Where can i find people to play with?

i forgot how the passive perception was calculated
10 + wisdom modifier
That's how all passives are generated - 10 + the modifier for that skill
+proficiency if you have it or + double prof if you have expertise
Well, 10 + what you’d normally add to the roll.
ah yes and proficiency
and another +5 if you have advantage
And potentially others.
Here's how to determine a character's total for a passive check:
10 + all modifiers that normally apply to the check
If the character has advantage on the check, add 5. For disadvantage, subtract 5.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/using-ability-scores#PassiveChecks
Yeah
okay great
Would anyone be able to help me with my character sheet?
Is there a way to play dnd solo?
I recommend asking in #character-discussion - folks there can provide feedback and tips.
The game was not designed around solo play, but it is possible. There are various resources out on the internet on how to do that. I am not familiar enough with any to provide a recommendation.
Oh okay
as a wizard, do I know the 3 spells at lv 1
or do I just have them in my tome so I need to prepare them ?
The class table should tell you that: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/classes#QuickBuild12
But wizards can also have more spells due to their ability to write them down in their spellbook.
The table just lists what they know generally.
Hey all, I'm looking for a group to watch/listen in on, to help me solidify the fundamentals. I've had a crash course, but want to see the flow and gameplay before I play.
I'd recommend watching the Dungeon Dude's Dungeons of Drakkenheim streams/podcasts. While they do use some homebrew rules, the majority of their gameplay stays true to standard D&D rules and mechanics.
Oh awesome. Thanks. I did try find something similar, but there were so many to choose from haha. After that how would you recommend going about finding a group?

A level 1 wizard knows 3 cantrips, which are always available to cast.
They also learn six 1st-level spells for their spellbook. You can prepare a number of them equal to your INT + wizard level.
You can only cast the ones you have prepared, but you can change those any time you finish a long rest.
The one exception is ritual spells in your book. You can cast those as a ritual whether they’re prepared or not. (You only need it prepared to cast it with a spell slot.)

Also are there any good resources on how to speak thieves cant (i know the very basic terms for making deals but I want to know other dialogue for it)
Think of thieves cant isn't a true language but using a mix of body and facial language with slangs.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/classes#ThievesCant
During your rogue training you learned thieves’ cant, a secret mix of dialect, jargon, and code that allows you to hide messages in seemingly normal conversation. Only another creature that knows thieves’ cant understands such messages. It takes four times longer to convey such a message than it does to speak the same idea plainly.

Is there a way to just buy all my druid stuff on D&D Beyond without buying a whole book? Like I want to unlock Circle the moon druid and the cantrips that are missing like the insect can trip is there a way to do this?
I saw a post that said this: Circle of the moon is in the players handbook to get access you can either purchase the whole book or just the subclass you want. Were do I just buy the subclass though? I don't see it anywhere
If you head to that page and scroll down.
Whatever you spend on those gets credited toward the cost of the book itself, too.
(Worth noting that the book is currently 40% off, though.)
The PHB is still on sale for $17.99

Hi can someone help me with how subclasses work?
at a certain level (dependant on class) you chose a subclass and gain some features for that subclass. at later levels, whenever you gain a subclass feature, you get the ones of the subclass you chose earlier
It’s essentially a specialization for your class.
So you might have two Fighters in the group, but if one is a Battle Master and one is a Rune Knight, they’ll each have a few unique abilities.
Anyone know how you would roll with advantage on roll20.net?
if your class is your specialisation, subclass is your specialisations specialisation
You want #third-party-tools-archive
Anyone have tips for blood hunter?
Haven’t used it but I’d assume you would just roll twice and use the highest roll, I think everyone in the lobby can see what you rolled ( especially the dm) so no stress about cheating 🙂
Ahh thats an easy way to do it ty
Q: just started getting into D&D… it’s rather daunting and also want to learn how to be a DM… any advice or YouTube tutorials for beginners anyone recommends?
I watched VLDL (highly recommend their D&D series!!) play their isolation games on roll20 back in the rona dayz 🙂
Vldl?
what channel would I use for lfg as a player?
I keep seeing "homebrew" what is it
"Homebrew" is content people create on their own, outside of published material.
Ooh ok ty

Hey all, new to DnD and have been super interested in wanting to get into it for a while now. I tried back in high school, but had a hard time. Recently I’ve been super into DnD podcasts and figured I’d give it another shot.
however I have a bit of a stupid question: when would be the best time to make my character? Before the DM has the campaign fleshed out or after?
I’ve tried making a character, but got stuck on the backstory, specifically on where they were from, so would it be better to wait until after the DM had it all fleshed out, to set my character to be from an in-story town?
I’d suggest coming up with a few loose character ideas.
Then you can work with your DM once they’re ready to find the right fit and add any remaining details.
As someone who's also new to DnD who's working on learning how to be a DM I'll tell you that it probably depends on your DM and their compaign. Most of the players in my group made their character after I gave them the campaign (we're using a premade because we're all beginners) and stuck to that idea. I think you base your character around the setting, and if you don't know that make some loose ideas.
Come up with character concepts, if you make them before finding a campaign use point buy or standard array and keep the backstory vague so you can flesh it out when you do find a DM to fit their setting
Alright, cause the main part I’ve been having trouble with has been the backstory. I’ve had a few character ideas but find it hard to properly execute them, even when using dndbeyond. It does seem to make more sense to keep it vague or wait until getting the campaign from the DM
I might try applying the knife theory to the backstory, when I get around to it

If the spell is being cast by an enemy, then the DM has that DC number.
The DC is typically 8 + Proficiency Modifier + Ability Modifier
And to add for clarity, the ability modifier is the one that the caster uses for their spellcasting
Correct
For a player, it’ll be listed in your Spellcasting or Pact Magic feature.
(If you don’t have a spellcasting ability, it’s treated as a 0.)
does anyone know of a vc

Hi, I've been playing my first D&D campaign with my friends and it's gotten me interested in DMing a game myself. What I'm mostly concerned about is coming up with a good adventure to take the PCs on and doing improv for NPC interactions. I'd been thinking about doing something homebrew but I don't want to get too in on over my head right from the get-go (probably will just fiddle with a known starter kit for now but ideally I'd like to eventually go completely custom with custom classes, mechanics, rules and system, etc.). Any recommendations for what I could do to make it an enjoyable experience?
Your plan with fiddle with one of the starter adventures sounds good. The general advice is don't go for significant mechanical homebrew changes until you understand the system, as it is very easy to do something that massively unbalances things
Learn the rules before you break them.
What I'm doing right now, also a new DM, is I'm starting a campaign with a premade campaign from D&D Beyond so I can get the feel for DMing without being worried about my story building. I'm taking notes down on how it is because it helps me understand how I would put my own campaign together when I start.
I'll probably do something like that. My friend who's DMing our campaign rn is homebrewing it but it's based off the Forgotten Realms setting
Really I just want to do a D&D campaign that just doesn't have magic but still a fantasy-esque world with different races and stuff. I might add in custom classes and maybe change a few skills to compesate for the lack of magic but yeah.
I kinda wanna see how characters will deal with the fact that you can't just magic your way out of a situation
hello, im a complete new beginner and i've yet to complete nor start a d&d campaign, i'd like to know how to play and learn the ropes and such, my friend knows a bit more about d&d but has never played it aswell, anyone know of any guides and/or ways to learn the ropes of the game and such?
i dont even know how to create a character correctly either but i am willing to learn how to

hey can anybody help me understand how to run a modual
If you need to get into specific details we have #1029833015423143957 - just find the specific adventure you need help with and post there.
You can also ask generalist DM questions in #dm-discussion. I found a few YouTube videos you might wanna check out as well:

Is there something specific you’re not sure how to do?
On April 7-9, local game stores in the U.S. and Canada are hosting a series of learn-to-play events, and you’re invited! Get the full details here.
then on english... is someone here who would have a time for a new contact im new to the game invited from some friends and now i try to learn everything and i would like to have someone who is already experienced with D&D and D&D beyond?

Both are linked above.
Yes im new... seems like people here have a problem woth me sesrching for people woth experience to learn from them and not spend hours reading the books and manuels😂 thats sad i was hoping this here connects people. Cye
Unfortunately we don't have the time and space to teach people D&D one on one - best to at least give the rules a look and ask any questions as you come across things.
Because there are new people joining the game here regularly every day. It's asking a lot for people take hours of their free time to teach all these new people.
Hi, I was wondering if I could get some help with my character.
I've done a lot of reading but it still feels so complicated
on what I want to achieve, and if it is within the rules
what are you stuck on?
So I think I've decided I want to build a Water Genasi Druid.
I've listened to a lot of podcasts but am not exactly experienced in playing or creating a character
I basically want to build a Water Genasi that can turn a game tile into a hazard somehow, like an acid puddle or something and can then transform into a giant crab to grapple and put people in said tile. That's the combat function
I wouldn't get too caught up in the meta of character builds. Focus on the core basic mechanics.
Is that possible
True, that's solid advice
I can use the Druid's wild shape to become a crab, right?
A druid has spells that can help create environmental hazards and yes, can wildshape into certain creatures.
Okay amazing, I at least know it's possible now
I would make sure water genasis are okay in whatever game/campaign you're playing in - some games may want to lock down character options for story's sake.
But yeah, your build is something that's possible.
Thank you @echo kelp thats really good advice.
I wanted to present my DM with a character idea but mainly wanted to make sure it was acceptable within theory first
is there anything close to a sniper in the game ?
Rangers I guess?
no
like the actual sniper
the gun
because I'm a bit confused on why taking the Sniper feat
i don't know if it's called like that in english
There is no official Sniper feat.
the one in the PHB
There’s one called Sharpshooter.
But that’s for any ranged weapon, which is primarily bows.
It isn’t specifically for ‘sniper’ weapons, just ranged weapons
okay thanks
would it make any sense for a noble to be a ranger?
Why not?!
sure - protecting their lands/nation/folks
okay lol. i saw that they were used to like... hardships and my character absolutely isn't yet
or maybe just into hunting down the most monstrous creatures for trophies
lots of ways to flavor it
this def makes the most sense. ty y'all i'm still trying to work out some things lol.
imma be in this chat 24/7
well... do take time to reflect that it's just a game and the point is to have fun. I would not recommend getting overly consumed by it!
ofc ! it's just I don't want to invest in a character that makes 0 sense 💀 but yeah. I hope it's as fun as I've heard
So could anyone possibly hep me with trying to get my character set up I can’t figure out somethings even with looking it up
What don’t you understand?
I can’t find what book P.O. learn master is in I’m trying to build a multiversal hexblade
Polearm*
PHB
Polearm Mastery is a feat found in the Players Handbook.
See I looked never found it I guess I missed it I have everything written down that I need but I’m just having a hard time finding all of my sources
Thank you guessing it doesn’t pull up on D&D beyond?
is draconic a universal language?
It's not Common.
okay
You have to own the Players Handbook (on DnDBeyond) or be in a campaign with content sharing enabled that has access to it to use it on DnDBeyond.
Or you can use the homebrew tools to create it for yourself - just don't publish it.
Oh ok thank you
on D&D beyond, the background language for elvish doesn't show up? do I need a book or something
Just realized I didn’t have the PHB🤦♂️😂
Which playable race did you choose?
Elf - High elf
It should already be in your languages by default.
oh! nvm ty
Is thirsting blade or booming blade in the PHB?
never heard of thirsting blade
Do you know if it is in the PHB or in a different book?
But yes, it’s in the PHB.
Oh ok maybe it’s a higher level too access it
Prerequisite: 5th level, Pact of the Blade feature
Thank you I found it an I think booming blade is in TCOE because I have XGTE an don’t have it
Yeah, it is TCOE.
I’ll just have to write it down for the time being and look it up for when I actually can get it on my hexblade
Hey so am I
same... ish.
Y’all on DnD beyond or like a character sheet?
You can create one digitally on D&D Beyond.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/builder
We have so much in common lol
Nope
If you click “Show help text” there at the start, it will walk you through it.
Beyond. I Just have a few things to fine tune though
It’s twinnem 🥰🤞🏽
But mostly it just follows the first few chapters of the Basic Rules, in order.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
(If you don’t have a DM yet, just skip the Settings page at the beginning for now.)
If you aren’t on DnD beyond I have no clue I’ve never made a character on a character sheet I’ve always used dnd beyond
I got d&d beyond but I don't know 1 what any of the settings mean 2 can't find any campaign that is starting as soon as today and is a oneshot
If you did want to do it by hand, you can print a blank character sheet here:
https://dnd.wizards.com/resources/character-sheets
So you're saying DnD beyond is my go to, got it lol
Again, if you don’t have a DM yet, just leave the settings at their defaults for now.
Very much so it is very helpful
Ok
When you get to Ability Scores, I’d recommend Standard Array or Point Buy for now as well. Once you’ve got a DM, they’ll let you know if they want something different (like having you roll).
speaking of DM's, do you know a good DM to help set up a game with a complete stranger to DnD? (I am referring to myself)
Tons of groups are willing to accept new players, if you let them know up front.
If u can find one like that lemme know too cause☝🏽😭 I’m very new and I learn by experience
But I don’t have any specific recommendations.
will do!

So I’d be looking for a DM ?
If you want to join as a player, you can post in #750812887697588356, yes.
Or you can look through the games DMs have already posted in the other three.
Or both.
I just if anyone's up for playing d&d on d&d beyond I just posted something in looking for DM's
Alright. Now I wait. Here's hoping.
I’m rlly new too but I suggest DND beyond ! Check out the basic rules and scroll through

I’m a brand new player I just downloaded d and d beyond and am interested in learning how to play and am wondering if someone would like to help? 🤷🏼♂️
Wassup new players
hi
im also new lol
aaa ok mabye of we all go together it will be easier
yea if we get like 1-3 more players we can ask for a DM
instead of trying to join random groups
yeah nope
@pearl bridge alr
Do y’all want to play?
oohi are you new too
Yesss
nice @pearl bridge @lime wing
we found our 4th member time for a dm
Ok perfect
how do i find a dnd group?
i have no idea
cool thx
anyone here know how to send a looking for dm messege
In the channel?
yeah
Are we gonna play or what?
What is Theater of Mind?
we need a dm
can you make a post for 4
alr
Theater of the Mind is where you play without any physical (or digital) maps, etc. and everything is just described and in your imagination
Ah ok
Hey! I am super new and have played once! Looking for a bit of help with all the jargon and just to meet new people to learn with!
Can't recall if we have the new player FAQ on this server that lists some of the most common abbreviations and terminology you'll see, but do you have any questions to help narrow down what sort of jargon you need help with before you get helpfully spammed with any word we can think of?
Hi, I'm totally new to dnd and would like to play some kind of beginner friendly campaign if anyone is interested. Unfortunately, I know almost nothing about this game so if you want to play with me just be ready for a lot of questions
If you private message me I can help you out as I'm a beginner DM and I have another beginner who I was talking to yesterday so we can make a small campaign. But this is the wrong channel to do this exchange in so yeah you can private message me or use #1075498333705089084
oh, mb
it's alright, I'm just letting you know
Hi, I am new to DnD and I am searching a German speaking community.
Can I find such a community on this Discord? Or is it only English DnD Community Discord?
Best Regards Lucyfer
How spacious is that campaign 👀 could it possibly fit an extra 🧙♂️?
Sure, but private message me about it because this is the wrong channel and I don't want anyone getting in any trouble
That is correct - take any game organization either to the proper channels or use direct messaging
How long does dnd runs usually. Like average hours?
I'm new by the way so thats why i am asking.
Oh okayy
My average session length is 4 hours.
Do you just die at the end or?
But I am old and cannot do marathon sessions anymore
no....campaigns go on for months or years
Ooh
that is just a session
Okay okay
I'm so confused, because this seems pretty complicated:D
We needed something to play with my friends so this crossed in our minds
For a level 1-13 adventure it could take a group 1-2 years to do it. Depending on how fast they move, the adventure, and if you play weekly etc.
whaaat
Some will be faster, some slower
But at a rate of one session a week for 4 hours a session, 1-2 years sounds about right for most level 1-13 adventures.
is 13 max level?
In D&D 5th Edition, level 20 is the highest level a PC can reach.
no, but many gaming groups don't go past level 13-15, things get weird quickly in the higher levels.
and many pre-written adventures don't go past 13-15.
yes and no? It depends on the players, on the adventure, on the workload the DM puts on themselves.
For me it looks like real job:D
Ive been doing it for 30+ years and haven't been paid yet 😛
I DM because it's fun and another way to play D&D
I get to come up with fun ideas to torture errr entertain my players with.
x
smirks
Yes, it can be. The pool of DMs is much smaller than the pool of players.
are there any campaigns that last 1 or 2 sessions or maybe a bit longer?
Your best bet is to have one member of your group be the DM. You can take turns with each new adventure.
okay
Run mini-adventures so each can take turns more often.
A level 1-3, 3-5, 5-7 etc breakdown can be done in a much shorter timeframe.
Is there like good tutorial for being dm?
those are called One Shots
One-shots should be done in a single session, but sometimes take longer..like 1-3 sessions
aight, thanks
does any new player want me to dm a solo encounter for them?
just a quick fight with a bandit, with some story and if anyone wants i can include some roleplay at the beginning
Please use the #looking-for-players channel to arrange games
i still dont understand how hitpoints work in dnd. how do i calculate my hit points and what does my hit-die do? 12HP seems to low and 35 seems to high
you roll hit-die to regain hitpoints
but you cant just use them when you want
you're only allowed when an item or spell or etc says so
you also gain hit-die you use after a short rest/long rest
actually idk
aha
Your class determines your hit dice. Each time you level up you gain another hit die. You can either roll that hit die and add to your hit dice pool or take the average. Every time though you also add your constitution modifier.
This then becomes your hit points pool which represents how much damage you can take before falling unconscious and taking death saving throws.
hey i joined a while ago but got very busy with real life, i have a basic character i made from back then, where could i share it and ask for feedback?
thank you

Note it's not just experience, but chemistry you want to find.
I've played with twenty year DMs who I couldn't stand and a first day DM I really enjoyed.
Hello all! First timer to D&D and I was looking to see if anyone would be willing to help teach me the basics? My group is 4 people in total (1 DM and 3 Players - I am the DM) so there are lots of things I am confused on when getting the party to do certain actions and rolls, thank you! - Feel free to DM me
You can ask questions / for advice in #dm-discussion
what would be a good subclass for a sneaky/stealthy sorcerer ?
Shadow?
shadow magic from XGtE ?
I would suggest Aberrant Mind from tasha's
Any tips for a new DM?
First check out the #dm-discussion channel
Is Waterdeep: Dragon Heist a one shot? Or could it be played within like, 5 games of 2.5 hours
No it's not an one-shot. It's a full blown adventure from levels 1 to 5
Alright. About how long would that take in games of 2 hours?
How long depends on your players. They control the pacing.
That's fair, thanks
Here's my generalist list of tips. #dm-discussion message
Hi! I’m new to DND and would like to join some players. I’m interested in DND, but I have no friends to play with. Are there any open groups?
Check out #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community channels.
Have you read the (free) Basic Rules yet?
Just got into dnd yesterday what is the first thing I should do
@mortal coral One of you has to volunteer to be the DM (Dungeon Master). The players DO NOT read the adventure because that ruins the game if they know what's going to happen.
You read the Basic Rules.
Oh okay
Read up on the rules, thats def step 1
Which Starter Set did you get? The one with the blue dragon the cover?
You can find the free rules on WoTC's website. I would highly recommend picking up the Players Handbook if you wanna get more into the game as well
Sorry if it bothers but could I be provided your recommended link?
Not a bother friend! Sent it your way. I haven't looked at the basic rules in a hot minute, but the players handbook will be a great guide as well once you feel ready to buy it.
There are also the starter sets which are pretty nice as well

See #find-a-game for info on how to use our #looking-for channels

Like most are not in my schedule and some are 18+ plus 🤨
You can check out your local game stores.

Other than that you have to keep looking.

Np
Your a life saver
Np!!!
Im new to the discord server, but not to dnd, Im very confused on how this works
What are you confused about?
about like #looking-for-players and stuff
#looking-for-players is where players can look for campaigns that DMs have put there. To put something there you go to #1075498333705089084 where you get an application to fill out. The directions are in #1075498333705089084
ty!
No problem, I'm new to both the server and DND so if I can help I offer it
Has anyone who is new here gotten a campaign yet? I'm wondering if I need to change my joining strategy lol
I messaged you about one but this overall isn't the channel for looking for games so if you want information about it stick to private messaging.
Oh I know where to look for games. Just wondering if anyone else is having trouble
It's a bit like dating/career search - spread your net far and wide, keep searching, and be patient.
Oh, alright, yes. I was having trouble that's why I decided I was going to DM my own.
And in both cases...I have no game 🥹
Jk lol thanks for advice, I'll try that
Be the campaign you wanna see in the world, I like it 👍🏾👍🏾
Being a DM is just another way to play D&D 😉
Oh yes, this campaign is going to come to life and I can't promise it won't make history 🤣 it's in very early developmental stages but it will exist
That's awesome, hope to at least hear how it goes down one day😁
Worlds your playground, don't be afraid to be imaginative
yeah, totally. you'll probably be able to witness when it's done and I'm looking for people to play.
Huh?

It doesn't even save
Well do you play board games without at least skimming the rules?
That's why I recommended to watch the "Handbooker Helper" tutorial videos.
The guided interactive adventure is fairly quick - maybe 15 minutes at most?
The real game are hours long for just one session.

never did that with Uno.
Everything else, yes.
Reading for an hour is rough unless it's not a picture less book
I like reading
well some games are a bit more casual - but a role playing game like D&D expects players to at least have some familiarity with how their character operates
Yea
The game is based on rules.
That's a lot of studying and memory usage
You don't need to memorize all of the rules but just get familiar with them.
Watch the videos since they're easier to digest than walls of text.
Bru
I learned dnd through some reading, watching some videos and then buying starter set
Welp I made some friends today
Please don't DM or try to add me on your friends list.
you're down for hugs tho?
Thanks!
do I actually need to make notes when DMing and playing D&D with first timers for the first time?
like about NPCs and campaign stuff? doing LMOP
Notes are there to help you. It's all dependent on your needs
i mean what's the point if it's already written down for me? seems like a lot of extra effort
Like I said, it's all dependent on your needs
You take as much notes as you need to write down. For example, you decide that the innkeeper will have this personality, this voice, and this secret past, so you jot that down in your notes.
You can have no notes and do everything by improv on the fly. It's all up to you.
what is homebrewing
Making your own content for the game. Whether it be rules, classes, spells, weapons, worlds etc.

anyone used charisma saving throw? if so, how?
It’s just a d20 + the character/creatures charisma modifier
I mean the situation of where it was used
Maybe during a spell? Or trying to see through a lie?
so would the NPC roll deception?
