Yir They changed the system allready there.
In 2 ed. The lower ac the better.
I don't miss lower AC from AD&D. It's not intuitive for new players that you add +X armour bonus but your AC number goes down.
3E was great in changing the attack roll and AC system (I don't miss THAC0)
So let me get this straith.
Youll have to put a proficiency bonus on each weapon?
Therefor the extra?
If anything 5E is similar to BX (and 4E) than 3.5E. The ruleset was simplified for greater accessibility for new players.
On each weapon you're proficient with, yeah.
You only add your proficiency bonus to weapons, skills, saving throws, and tools you are proficient in.
For fighters, that's basically every weapon.
And saving throws!
Yes that too.
For wizards, that's only daggers, darts, slings, quarterstaffs, and light crossbows.
That said, there is the bladesinging wizard sub-class that is a "melee" wizard...
Still a far cry from a fighter, though -- at least in terms of weapon proficiencies.
You gain proficiency with light armor, and you gain proficiency with one type of one-handed melee weapon of your choice.
Ok. Im a 3 lvl fighter with + 3 in dex..
If i roll a 13 Ill hit an ac of 16.
Higher even, since you'd have a total of +5 to that 13 roll.
Once I had to profusely apologize to a player when I laughed uncontrollably when his bladesinger got knocked down to 0 hp from an opportunity attack because he forgot to say used the Disengage or Dodge action. I was so embarassed as a DM for laughing at a player's decision...
Howcome?
+3 from Dex, +2 from proficiency.
Proficiency bonus!
The Dex modifier only matters if they weapon is ~~light ~~finesse or ranged though.
Assuming the weapon allows you to use Dex and assuming you're proficient in said weapon.
Finesse too, right?
Finesse is the property you're looking for, not light
Light allows you to dual wield, finesse lets you use dex in place of strength
Im a 3.lvl wizard with + 2 in dex
I roll 13.
I hit an ac of 17 If the weapon is a sling?
And in lvl 5 its 18 because og the extra bonus..
But Ill guess its just like the wepons the class can use thats the proficiency..
So of a wizard use a 1 hand sword what then?
Or is it a No go
A wizard doesn't have proficiency in shortswords, but can still use them, just not adding their proficiency bonus.
Weapons you are not proficient with can still be used, tho you can’t add your proficiency bonus to the attack roll.
Most of the time you’ll be slinging cantrips as a wizard, tho.
An cantrips can be used All the time 🧐
Yup. Cantrips are basic spells that don't take up spell slots. Low but reliable damage.
As long as you meet the requirements for the spell components then cantrips have no limit.
Generally you'd have an arcane focus that deals with the material components
Lol
Example: fire bolt has vocal (v) and somatic (s) components.
That means you need to be able to vocalize the incantation and you need a free hand to perform the somatic gesture.
Your save DC is what a monster has to beat with their saving throw to be unaffected by your spell, or suffer a reduced effect.
Your save DC is calculated as 8 + your spellcasting modifier + your proficiency bonus.
As an example, I'm a level 3 wizard with a 16 in intelligence. My save DC is 8 + 3 (from int) + 2 (prof bonus), which equals 13.
Sorry quick question for warlock I get two languages common and elvish then another of my choice, does it have to be from the standard list or can it be from other lists?
Standard list is generally what you pull from. Anything exotic or not listed you’d best run by your DM first.
Ask your DM which languages are in their campaign setting.
Oh ok thanks
Always wanted to play d&d but never got the chance so im wondering how this whole thing works

how do subclasses work? can you have multiple subclasses?
No
like fighter champion and battlemaster?
Only one subclass per class.
Do these even have subclasses? https://media.wizards.com/downloads/dnd/StarterSet_Characters.pdf
Think of a subclass like a specialist profession. There are engineers and medical doctors but they can specialize.
the cleric already has a subclass. the wizard gets theirs at level 2, the other characters in this sheet get theirs at level 3
Most classes don't choose their sub-class until level 3.
They don't seem to be explicitly called out, but yes.
The fighter is a Champion, for example.
why at lvl 3?
Because that's the way it was designed.
because level 3 is the point where most classes get their subclass choice
That's what the rules for the specific class state
where does it say the fighter is a champion? I don't see anything with ctrl+f
Because it's the one free fighter sub-class in the Basic Rules/SRD.
where does the PHB even talk about classes getting their subclasses at lvl 3? and why wizards get it at lvl 2?
You have to read each class to see when they choose their subclass.
Under each class description
The Fighter gets Improved Critical because they're a Champion.
SRD?
Systems Reference Document. Think of it as the "open source" for the 5E ruleset that third parties can use.
The subclasses not found in the Basic Rules/SRD are only found in the WotC published source books, such as the PHB, Tasha's, and Xanathar's (meaning: you have to buy those books to have access to them).
Any Fighter that wasn’t a Champion would not get Improved Critical, but some other feature instead.
That sheet just doesn’t outright say it, presumably in the interest of simplicity.
so the only way you knew he was champion was the lvl 3 Improved Critical mention? in the starter set characters?
Yeah
sheesh
Which also makes sense because, like the others said, Champion is the “free” subclass.
It was done for simplicity. It's a premade character afterall.
hey everyone, this is just a test to see if my PCP is visible
I had issues w it before
do i have to buy the PHB or is there a free version online? hosted by wizard
I don’t know what a PCP is. 😅
Primary care physician?
The Basic Rules are available at no cost:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
It’s a subset of the information found in the PHB.
The only difference between the free basic rules and the PHB are the number of player customization options
All the core rules, but fewer character options.
PHB isn't free. You can either buy the physical book (Amazon or your local game store) or the digital one (D&D Beyond... which the sale was over yesterday)
does the PHB have TCE rules? is TCE even considered 5e since it added on rules?
No, TCE was published after the PHB, and yes, it's 5e, just an expansion of the existing rules.
Previous editions had expansion source books. 5E is no different. (Remember that TSR/WotC makes money by selling books)
They are technically an optional rule in 5e but they are fairly common practice
May I ask where I could find some quick and easy rules summ up?
Maybe this first video in a series will work for you? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RO2qv5Uin9c
I've never seen a single source that boils it down because even the basics are a fair amount to absorb.
Okay thanks though!
Before the Storm does a good job of introducing the basics.

Could I have some help I would like to post for looking for DM but I am confused on how to do so?
wait there's something I don't understand
at level 3 in Warlock you have 2 spells slots
and 2 spells slots levels
does it mean you can only cast 2 spells ?
yes
but then, if you cast a level 1 spell with a 2nd level spell slot, you technically can't cast spells anymore right ?
yes, thats why warlocks want to use spells that can be upcast
So
in the warlock table
for 4 regular spells
you can only cast twice before having to do a short/long rest ?
what about pact magic ?
it' the same thing except you just don't have to prepare the spell right ?
it keeps the other rules of spellcasting aside from that
You know spells as a Warlock
pact magic works like this
- you have 2 spell slots (you gain one more spell slot beginning 3rd tier and one 4th tier play)
- you learn spells each time each time you level up until 9th level. Then you know a new spell every other level
- your spell slots, while limited, grow more powerful.
even if you cast a level 1 spell when your spell slots are only level 2, your level 1 spell will always be upcasted
Yes
and do not need to prepare them ?
Nope
warlocks aren't like wizards where you prepare your spells each day. They know a certain amount of spells and can always cast those spells.
You have "spells known"
You can only learn spells through levelling up, you can't learn them from a book like a wizard
so basically, none of the warlock spells need to be prepared ?
You have "spells known"
which is a numerical value
at level 1, you know 2 spells etc etc
Doesn't have to be from the patron, patron gives you access to more spells.
you also have the warlock spell list to choose from
yeah sure, it was an example
Yes, you can choose spells your patron gives, that's called the expanded spell list
but if I'm a lv 3 Warlock, I have access to 4 spells and 2 cantrips
in these 4 spells
I choose 1 from my patron expanded spells list
it become pact magic, right ?
Pact magic is just how you got your magic which is through your patron
yeah but in this case
Patron Magic: Your arcane research and the magic bestowed on you by your patron have given you facility with spells.
pact magic isn't a spell category. its how you cast your spells.
You can choose 4 spells, either from your patron's list or from the normal warlock list
i should be able to cast 1 level 1 spell and 1 level 2 spell OR 2 level 1 spells, right ?
Yes
oh no. You can cast 2 level 1 spells or 2 level 2 spells
In whatever combination you want
wdym 2 level 2 spells ?
You have 2 spell slots, you can cast whatever spell you want as long its in your 4
You have 2 spell slots, you can cast 2 level 2 spells
So I can cast at any level I want ?
you have two spell slots that grow in power. They work like normal spell slots but everything cast with them are upcast
yes, so long as your warlock spell slots are of that level
Look at the slot level
it says 2
you can only know spells which are level 2 and under
Ooh I get it
so all your spell slots are 2nd level. Anything cast with them are always upcast to 2nd level
when it goes up to level 3 at 5th level. you can learn spells of 3rd level
and so on
I thought that, because it said 2 in the spells slot and in the Spell slots level, it meant that I had one level 1 slot and one level 2 slot
All your spell slot level = Slot level
When you level up to level 5, all your spell slots turn into level 3 spell slots
so do I need to prepare the spells that are not from my patron ?
okay I get it
patron just gives you access to additional spells
Thank you both
np, happy to answer
I am new to dnd I bought the players handbook for $18 on dndbeyond and I downloaded app and made my first character. I am going to have my first session on Saturday. I chose for my first character a female halfling rogue with entertainer background and she has a flute and focuses on sleight of hand and deception and I chose to progress by experience. I am hoping this is a good character for a new player.
Sounds great! Is it level 1?
Yeah level 1
Is it a full campaign or just a 1 session thing?
I found a place in town near me that meets every Saturday at 4:30 and it’s a continuous never ending campaign run by a game shop. It cost $10 a seat and it’s open to new players and your welcome to come to multiple sessions and have your character progress and jump in any time it’s been running for years
awesome, if you enjoy playing dnd do think about what subclass you want for your character at level 3
Talk to your dm about whether they're using experience or milestone levelling
Oops was scrolled up
a lot of them are not in the PHB, but you still have 3 choices
If it’s milestone I will make a new character since this was experience based. I joined dnd beyond master sub so I can have characters and dice rolls on my iPhone
If you find dnd fun, do consider buying physical dice. they are much more fun
Good to know
I really enjoyed the new movie and I played Star Trek table top about a decade ago for about a year meeting every month. I haven’t tried dnd but I figured since I enjoyed trek table top rpg and enjoyed the movie I should try it
Have fun honestly
and you know the basic stuff like not talking over anyone else, respecting others but that’s common sense
and ask if you are unsure
also if there is combat, most people pre-plan their moves before their turn so that the combat goes quicker
Thanks i am sure I will it sounds interesting. I got the book homeland to read for some more knowledge in setting
Do you know of any dnd sessions that are possibly happening? Im still pretty new to this since it's been awhile since I've played in D&D

I just seen an article that one dnd or whatever it's called is going to be backwards compatible. I didn't read it yet I'm at work. Does that mean if I bought the rule books (phb, dmg, mm) today for 5e they're not obsolete?
You can still use them with the updates if everything works out - again everything is under development and things may change but D&D has said they'd like to keep everything backwards compatible with 5th edition. See #1063492306927374426 for more discussion about the upcoming updates.
Okay thanks @echo kelp !
Hey Everyone. This is my first time here. Never played before. Just starting to create a character. This game looks really fun
Hey y'all am pretty new i have never played before, and it would really help if someone could answer some of my questions
Fire away.
you get experience points from killing stuff and completing quests
When you say 'how do they work,' what do you mean exactly?
ok so ofc you star by 0 right?
You start at level 1.
btw ty
ok that answers some questions
You can earn experience points by defeating monsters and overcoming obstacles, as mentioned. But some DMs run it that you level up when you reach points in the story.
i didnt know that
ok that makes it easy to understand
ok i have a nother question, whats everything someone needs to make a character?
The rules and a character sheet. Dice optional.
You just need a sheet really, everything else can be found online
ok tysm everyone
This is the process: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters
Here are character sheets: https://dnd.wizards.com/resources/character-sheets
so do you guys normally play with new players
I have two newbies at my table.
I play with a mix of people in person
You can
Genuine question, how do you prank a skeleton?
In theory, sure. But the table has to be good with it.
I would ask your dm and table because it's not guaranteed everywhere
Thats true, im just used to someone who always plays crazy/evil characters
What are you trying to achieve exactly?
Just a friendly prank on a party member.
That's not really what this channel is for, so maybe #non-dnd-topics?

for LMOP, how do you know what items your characters have equipped? like the cleric? afaik the cleric can't use S or M spell if he has a weapon and shield equipped
and the holy symbol needs to be held i assume
i also assume it costs 1 action to unequip and 1 action to equip?
A holy symbol is a representation of a god or pantheon. A cleric or paladin can use a holy symbol as a spellcasting focus, as described in the Spellcasting section. To use the symbol in this way, the caster must hold it in hand, wear it visibly, or bear it on a shield.
ahhh
well then for somatic spells he can't use them if he has a shield and weapon in each hand
That still runs into the problem of M components, however, if they have an associated cost.
You can stow/drop weapons and shields
so how do I know what weapons my PC has equipped on entry encounter into LMOP campaign? and does it take 2 actions to change a weapon?
It's an action to don or doff a shield. Dropping a weapon is no action. Stowing OR drawing a weapon is an object interaction action (1 per turn).
You can ask your players what they're carrying in hand once combat begins if you like.
how do you even keep track of that? via character sheet constantly? or?
because 1 char has a crap ton of weapons in inventory
You don't need to know ALL their weapons. Just what they have in hand at the moment.
can't they choose whatever then for each combat start then?
or is it just for the sake of entry encounter for campaign?
Maybe ask them "What does your character carry generally?" They tell you. "Great. So I'll assume that's what you have whenever a battle breaks out."
In some cases they may see an enemy approach and can prepare; in other cases, combat may happen too abruptly.

does magic miss? like sacred flame?
It can
Spells will tell you whether you roll to attack or if the enemy has to make a save
Read the spell description. Ones with attack rolls can miss. Others hit but deal less damage if the enemy successfully passes a saving throw.
and for shocking grap you roll a d20 and add your spell attack bonus right?
Yes.

Hello Friends! Im building my first Cleric. Ive been told I can use domain spells even though Im not aligned with that domain. Is this true?
What do you mean aligned?
No, you can only use domain spells that are part of your divine domain. For example, only an Arcana Domain cleric gets access to the spells from that domain
On April 7-9, local game stores in the U.S. and Canada are hosting a series of learn-to-play events, and you’re invited! Get the full details here.
Ok so beside the core cleric spells I can only use the certain spells that pertain to my Domain and no other.
The domain spells of your divine domain are added to your cleric spell list and you can prepare any appropriate spells from that list
Is there any other product that is recommended for beginners other than the starter sets (IRL)
Right, as and ex per say. I choose Light Domain, I start at lvl 3 so 1st lvl spells I auto have are burning hands, faerie fire. Then 2nd lvl is flaming sphere, scorching ray.
Can I say add Healing Word to my 1st level spells as well?
yep yep, the preparation rules are there for that - the domain spells are always prepared for you as an exception
Ok cool so all core spells I can use plus my domain ones. I just cant use another domains spells once I pick one
yes, when preparing spells just don't look at what the other domains get, the cleric spell list is a good way to see what you can pick
the domain things are an extra
Is there a particular class that’s easiest to start with?
ok awesome. Im going Life Domain but I just really wanted the speak with animals spell from Nature bc part of my characters back story is that he was taught how to communicate with Ducks lmao
Go Bard! They are super easy and super fun!
Maybe my Dm will let me sneak that spell in for fun lol
A paladín is not too hard to play right? Group i got into already has a bard
if you a brand new a fighter would not be bad
Group has one too lmfaooo
Warlock?
Has one
lol hmmmmmm
Has a rogue too
If you're not using only the PHB you could pick it up through a feat (Eldritch Adept -> Beast Speech, Fey Touched, Ritual Caster, maybe Magic Initiate [last 2 if you're phb only])
Cleric?
iirc yeah but he wasn’t at the first session
pick the one that sounds cool, if you're really into it then it'll be no probs to pick up fast
interesting. ill do some research on that! Thank you for helping friend!
are you playing 5e?
If I'm playing with multiclassing and I arrive at lv 4, can I take my ASI before multiclassing or should I wait until the next level ?
imagine I have 11 in Charisma and I want to multiclass as a Warlock
when I'm level 4, I take +2 in Charisma
Technically, with a Charisma of 13, I can multiclass into Warlock
but can I do that if I didn't have the prerequisites before my ASI ?
You don’t meet the prerequisite of 13 cha so you would need the ASI at level 4
So would have to wait till level 5 to multi class
Okay thanks
Any martial class that can’t cast spells are the easiest to start with
That would be Rogue Fighter Barbarian and Monk
Wha
What kind of games run PHB only?
Newcomer games, school games where they only have the basic rules
We are not only using PHB but its a lot of the groups first time so we are suggesting to start with that for now.
I will often run Basic Rules/Player's Handbook only games for newcomers
Yeah just makes it easier to get people into it before we intro them to all the other crazy stuff lol
Hi, completely new to DND basically don’t know anything about it just that it seems fun. Was wondering if there are any campaigns held on this server or if there’s any good place to start?

Hi, similar question. I am interested in playing my first DnD game online, since I don't know anyone that wants to play IRL.
There are so many platforms and LFG avenues to search for a game. Which one do you recommend for the quickest way to find a beginner friendly game?

It’s not a quick processes to find a game so don’t fret if it takes a while, you could also look IRL https://locator.wizards.com/
Tips? That’s very vague, what you need help with
Hello! A friend and I have been tempted to start playing DnD for some time now. We've only ever seen campaigns and tutorials (basic rules + character creation) on youtube/tiktok. Although we watch those videos, we're still having a rough time getting our minds wrapped around on how the game works since we've never played with other people before so we just keep making our characters with the help of the handbook. 😭
If someone is patient enough to "take us in" and correct us in certain areas along the way please do contact me. Even if you dm/reply with advice on how to make even better characters that'd be super helpful!! We don't get shy when it comes to our imagination so I think we'd be a fun pair to have, thanks!
Hey, so I'm fairly new to dnd ; I taught myself how to somewhat play by dming. I really want to try to learn how to play as a player, but I'm not sure how to find sessions that are hosted online, and that are beginner friendly.
The quick-start guide below explains how to find a game here on our server. Check out #find-a-game for the channel rules, FAQ, and off-server game options.

You learnt through dming? Thats crazy
Thank you very much<3
I'm trying my best lmao
If you want to keep dm-ing, is it alright if we can join in whenever you decide to do a campaign?? Deadass will grasp at every opportunity to learn here 🔥 🔥
A friend from the music studio got me into it, and I decided to try it with my friends. I don't follow everything 100% by the books, but they seem to enjoy it
Next time I host a new campaign, I wouldn't mind helping. Currently my session is full
No problemm, just hmu if there are spots!!
It won't let me post in the #750812887697588356 channel, sorry to bother ^^;
You need to follow the instructions in #find-a-game
There is a bot command that fills out a post for you in that channel
Omg I cannot read, I'm sorry
Question:
If you're dual wielding how are you supposed to roll for that??
(P.S. Sorry if there is an obvious answer)
Ok so say your a level 1 fighter and have 2 short swords you would roll to attack with your action and then as a bonus action you can attack with the other short sword
I think you can use both shortswords in one action, and instead rolling 1d6, you roll 2d6 (?)
No
Do certain classes only have the dual wielding feat?
Any class can two weapon fight but both weapons have to have the ‘light’ property
Some classes get access to fighting styles to improve on this and then there is the duel wielding feat that means you can use weapons that don’t have the light property
Ohh omg thank you for the help :))
One more question, what about versatile weapons?
Do they fit the category?
Only if you have the dual wield feat
In theory, if you had a weapon that was both versatile and light, it would work.
But there are no such official weapons.
Point is: it only matters whether it's light or not.
It can happen within RAW actually: the wild magic barb can make any weapon you’re holding light and thrown with one of their surges
Yeah but these are new players so was sticking to simple rules
Oh, agreed. I was just trying to illustrate that it's only light that matters.
Hey everyone, as someone whose never played (me) how could i go about finding a group that I could play with. right now im looking into character creation, and I kinda know the rules of the game

So i guesse i would be looking for a dm right
If you want to join as a player, yes.
I meant about the wild magic barb stuff
By default, it's for traditional D&D games, but you can opt in for paid and community game invites as well.
I have never played before but have been trying to learn by videos (I am very much a hands on learner) do you think someone would be mad if I joined there game like this newby ish?
nah, everyone has to start somewhere. plenty of newbie games around
Most groups actually love new players in my experience! Just let them know that you're still learning a bit and it should be good. ✌️
As long as youre not joining some crazy accuate professional only campaign or whatever, nobody should get mad at you for that !
Okay great thank you!
I just bide my time for AI to replace the need to find a group 😅
You will most likely be waiting longer than it would take you to find a group
Hey I'm progressing on that front, I'm reading into doing the mine campaign
Are Chinese meat cleavers a thing in D&D? I'm trying to make a character based on Scout
Use hand axe
And then just call it a meat cleaver, yeah.
Hello, can anyone pls tell me what the difference is between Hit/DC and Damage??
What are you referring to exactly?
To hit, is to see if you actually hit the opponent, the damage is to see how much damage you did if you actually hit the person
Oh wait I can't post pictures,
If you’re looking at D&D Beyond, a “Hit” number will show with a plus or minus.
^ Yes this
+5 would mean you add five to an attack roll.
Oh thank you!!
A number without a + or - would be the save DC. That’s the number your target needs to get to succeed on their saving throw when you use that ability.
And the Damage column is (generally) how much damage the target takes if the attack hits or they fail their save.
Okok I get it noww, thank you sm 😭
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hD-LWHhiseE&list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN&index=1
Will watch, thank you!!
If you want to share a link to your character sheet, we could give you some specific examples.
Omg yes, please point out every single flaw too 😭
I'll send it in #character-discussion
So is there going to be a new dnd soon? Like I guess a 6th edition? I just got the player handbook for $18 for 5th edition if there is a new edition coming out I’m glad I got this so cheap. I see posts about backwards compatibility and such so I’m unsure what’s going on in world of dnd books
It's not 6E but more like 5.5E and according to WotC it'll be "backwards compatible" with 5E.
There is an upcoming revision to 5e next year which, yes, is supposed to be compatible with current 5e books.
How that plays out in practice remains to be seen.
From my friend group, most people still stay in 5e or heavily change the rules
Good to know Ty. I will probably wait on getting physical books until the revision comes next year. I almost bought the gift set but want to have latest rules that last when I go physical
There are millions of 5e players currently, and I don’t think all of them will jump immediately to the new edition—don’t want to spend more money, are already comfy with the rules, whatever. So if you stick to 5e, you won’t be alone in that, I think.
I've used some of the things from the One D&D UA, such as getting Inspiration from rolling Nat20s. It encourages my players to use Inspiration (before they forgot about using it) and it adds more fun to the day if they rolled badly.
Most of the 5E players never played a previous edition so they have never experienced an edition change before. Not all edition changes are whole new editions. 2E was essentially a patch to 1E. There was 3.5E which came out about three years after 3E came out (in 2000).
Good to know
WotC isn't going to come to your house and take away your 5E books. You aren't forced to play 5.5E (yes, I'm calling it that, WotC! :P). You can play whatever edition you want (lots of people are now playing OSR (which is based on B/X ruleset))
Is there a place in forums where I can share my character build pdf from beyond? I want to see if I made her right or should redo her
Ty
On April 7-9, local game stores in the U.S. and Canada are hosting a series of learn-to-play events, and you’re invited! Get the full details here.
what are some things a fighter could do at lvl 1 to spice up combat? since he can't cast spells
same as a rogue
can you say that you do a jump and swing your sword to do extra damage or something?
RAW, no, but you can rule that as the DM.
grapple, shove come to mind. Anything more would be either rule of cool, or you describe your attacks in different ways, even if you are mechanically just attacking
The only other bit I would add to Omegon’s point is using the environment in creative ways, whether to put the enemy in a sticky situation and/or use it for cover.
grappling doesn't let you do damage and just makes you and the other creature immobile unable to do anything outside of grappling, no?
You can move but the creature can’t.
What about here for the fighter? practicing DMing with myself before 1st session with 1st timers https://imgur.com/a/G1u5fOj
Improvise
Your character can do things not covered by the actions in this chapter, such as breaking down doors, intimidating enemies, sensing weaknesses in magical defenses, or calling for a parley with a foe. The only limits to the actions you can attempt are your imagination and your character's ability scores. See the descriptions of the ability scores in chapter 7 for inspiration as you improvise. When you describe an action not detailed elsewhere in the rules, the DM tells you whether that action is possible and what kind of roll you need to make, if any, to determine success or failure.
if you grapple a creature you can drag them around.
isn't grappling pointless except for stopping creatures from running away?
Not at all.
if an enemy is prone, grapple prevents them from standing up. If a grappled creature is trapped inside a hazardous area, they cant escape the damage
a flying creature drops to the ground if grappled
@harsh fjord what would you use for environment in that imgur link?
You can also grapple to help a teammate, like setting a wizard up for a spell.
My two cents, I think you are overthinking this way too much and once you start playing with others, you will start to find your voice as a dm so to speak
Yes you are gonna mess up, and that's ok. Everyone does. What matters most is that everyone is having fun
well these guys won't know a single rule in D&D so I'm kind of exploring their options ahead of time to recommend stuff they can do
Work together!
and i noticed that fighter is lack luster in lvl 1 compared to cleric and wizard who can do more stuff in combat
It’s hard to tell how much movement is available because there’s no grid, but taking the high ground could work. Also the fighter has bottlenecked them so someone else could take that high ground and anyone trying to get past will probably incur an opportunity attack.
You are gonna make yourself crazy trying to figure out every single angle your players might take
that encounter is a good example of using the environment. shoving a goblin off a cliff can work. also, goblins can disegage as a bonus action so keeping them in place is a big benefit
can i throw goblins as a fighter?
otherwise I agree with the others. you cant predict what your players gonna do anyway, just roll with the punches
there are no rules for throwing living creatures so that would circle back to the improvise action
i'm a bit worried that if i improvise and let them throw goblins that it will become some OP homebrew constantly used
you are free to not allow it or to make it a massive risk of nothing happening
There are no rules for throwing other creatures. There's the shove rule though.
You can always talk to your players about no longer allowing a thing you allowed once.
well i don't know what's a good DC and good damage to use yet and whether to use throwing as a resource die or whatever
as i have yet to play
throwing someone who is alive and concious and resisting would be pretty difficult for anyone
hola
Stick with RAW as much as you can so you and they have a baseline.
i have an idea for a dnd character but idk how to create a character sheet

You're a new DM, don't start homebrewing rules to create more work than you need to.
The process is here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters
Character sheets are here: https://dnd.wizards.com/resources/character-sheets
You can also create a character digitally here:

D&D Beyond will do a lot of the heavy lifting with calculations and such.
Hey is ther a way to learn the dm rules withaut the dm handbook
Yes basic rules and lost mines
Dm handbook is just a lot of expanded rules to flesh out worlds and stuff it not needed to run a game
Ok thats good thanks
Do you have the basic rules?
Well i stil ned tu buy the things and the dm handbook costs a lot of mony wher i live so im stil loking for what to buy
So its good to knew that i dont ned to buy the dm handbook
The free Basic Rules has a lot of basic rules for both players and DMs.
There are plenty of D&D Youtubers, such as Matt Colville, Sly Flourish, The DM Lair, Dungeon Dudes, Dungeon Craft, How to be a Great GM, Nerdarchy, Web DM, XP to Level 3, WASD20, Seth Skorkowsky, Esper the Bard, How to D&D, Zee Bashew, Don't Stop Thinking, Icarus Games, Runehammer, Zipperon Disney, and MonarchsFactory, who give advice on DMing and playing.
Ok im gona chek them out thanks
Check the pins in this channel for link to free rules and lost mine of phandelva
Ok
Are you playing online or irl
That being said, there are a lot of helpful rules in there to actually help you run the game
There is a whole "running the game" section
As well as things for like downtime and magic items
But for someone on a budget you don’t need it
When getting started no, but it is a great second/third purchase
Maiby in the fustur after i playd more il buy it
The Basic Rules and Elemental Evil Player's Companion are both free.
https://media.wizards.com/2018/dnd/downloads/DnD_BasicRules_2018.pdf
https://media.wizards.com/2015/downloads/dnd/EE_PlayersCompanion.pdf
Thats good
D&D can be as cheap or expensive as you are willing to spend.
You can play with just those free PDFs or spend thousands on dice, miniatures, books (physical and digital), furniture, apps, etc.
Just getting back into D&D now
I had an older player’s handbook, so I’m getting the newest one
I think for now il stay with cheap stuf maybi in the futur il spend more
I bought early access version of rpg stories on steam. I would love to DM a campaign of dnd or something in the future. I’ve always been a player of the few different games I’ve played of Star Trek and dragon age. I write short stories for myself that I don’t publish I just make fantasy worlds and stories a lot. I make maps and set the lore and back story of the world and I come up with a story of an antagonist and a band of heroes that must stop antagonist, since I never published any of these stories I could probably use them as a campaign base for dnd. I just have a case of nerves when in charge of anything rofl I can’t do public speaking or college class presentations I get all stuttering and forgetful but I’m fine when I’m not in charge and I’m just talking as part of a group like as a player. I’d probably look like an idiot if I did try to DM
Is roll20 a good place to play D&D?
Some creep just had very bad stuff on it when I launched their room
Roll20 is jsut a VTT (virtual tabletop) app.
The content of an individual DM/GM shouldn't reflect Roll20 itself.
like what?
It may be safer for them not to mention it if they found it bad, then it probably isn't safe to discuss here
DMs have a lot of control of whats inside their games on roll20. if what you saw violated the terms of service, it might be worth it to report them to roll20
You do what you find comfortable, but I think you would get better at these things by practicing them, whether as a DM or not. Insisting that’s just how things are is a fixed mindset that precludes the possibility of learning and growth!
hello! I am looking to find what class I want to play. In other games, I often choose a class that looks cool, but I end up hating it later. Any help would be greatly appreciated !
You could read over the classes and decide on what sounds fun. What would you like to do in the game?
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.

Can anyone tell me how to go about posting up on the looking for DM channel? I don't seem to have any ability to do so.
Check out #find-a-game for instructions how to use the channels
Thank you kindly mate.
I'm a young 13 year old boy looking to play dnd my friend whose somewhat experienced offered to start a campaign but I need two or three friend if you are interested dm me!

Hey, welcome. Just so you know you probably shouldn't list your specific age in posts in this server. It's sort of against the rules
oh, sorry.
Post in one of those channels listed above, rather than here.
im not the dm and dont know much about the game so i cant
Regardless, you shouldn't post looking for players here.
sorry
Don't worry about it.
I created my character, so like...where do I go to play dnd?
And they shouted “Drop and give me d20!”?
You can go to game stores
That’s amazing
But no, I asked. “Hey if I pick a lock irl could I get advantage on lock picking checks?”

Stores?
Like I have to pay?
Paid games do exist, but no.
You can play D&D forever without paying a dime.
Some hobby stores will host games.
@clear estuary Do I need to create a character before-hand when searching for a Campaign to join?
In some cases, yes! In others, no.
Example: the venue that hosts the games I organize doesn’t directly charge, but we strongly encourage people support the venue that lets them roll dice and drink beer.
She said “yeah.” So I pulled a lock out of one pocket a lock picking kit out of the other and picked the lock in less than 30 seconds.
The DM may ask you to create a new character from scratch.
That’s pretty cool! 🔐
That's what I was thinking. Cause obviously each Campaign is different, so, I'd figured they'd want you to start from scratch each time. lol
Yes because the campaign setting may not allow certain playable races/sub-classes. You may start at level 1 or higher. Depends on the individual DM.
It’s my new hobby
Gotcha. I'm pretty excited to start playing. I'm guessing I need to start in LF DM and then LF Players.
Yup
Cool. Ty.
hey ppl
making a halfelf hexblade but im not sure what gear to get
i have 30 gold but im spending 10 on hide medium armor
so 20
i need a martial weapon
alr ty
My local place is similar. It's a $5 cover and you can stay as long as you like - but again, snacks and drinks are encouraged to be bought (and they have a great menu so it's an easy sell to us lol). ✌️
Edit: And it's only for boardgame players. I suppose someone could come in just to drink and eat, but it would be weird to pay an extra $5 when you could just go to a restaurant?
I’ve seen some with a similar cover, but it just goes on to a gift card for the player to then buy those drinks and snacks. It’s a way to guarantee revenue for the store, while the customer still gets to spend it on stuff.
Oh, that's nice. Nah, I live in Toronto so... 💸
Haha bye bye moneyyyyyy
But I could play with my character each time right? Is there a cap to his level or am I free to make him a reclusive all-powerful wizard? 👀
Not sure I understand. 20 is the level cap. By that point, a wizard would be considered all-powerful.
There are boons and other options beyond 20.
But you can be a recluse at any level.
Just a reclusive jumping from world to world hoarding stuff , okay only until level 20
Remember that the DM may limit what you do within their adventure/campaign.
PC: "I'm going to jump from world to world!"
DM: "Um, you have a quest to clear the tavern cellar of giant rats..."
How do y’all run the spelljammer ships? I read through the book but it was confusing
Oh like at at the start of the campaign if it's different than previously to explain why I'm there , I don't mind clearing that tavern happily to use the high level spells is why I learned them 😀
Does the DM guide unlock much on dndbeyond? Just wondering if it's worth getting versus just getting the physical book
I mean digital access to it so you can have it wherever you have internet (or have the mobile app which can store the data offline).
Less physical weight to lug around.
Does it unlock a lot for character creation or assets that can be used?
I want the random tables, but I feel like physical is enough for those
Depends what you find convenient. If you're DMing online like me, I find D&D Beyond's digital books very convenient and easy to search for rules, magic items, and monsters statblocks.
The DMG doesn't have any new playable classes other than the optional death domain cleric and oathbraker paladin.
The DMG has some great magic items but it's really meant more as a reference book for DMs than anything for player/character use.
If you're not going to be a DM then don't buy the DMG. It's not of any use for non-DM players.
I do want to DM
Tasha's and Xanathar's are hybrid books that they have content for both players (new playable races and classes) and DMs (new optional rules)
Gotcha
I think the DMG is worth it if you want to DM
I wanna run a spelljammer campaign, what ship would I start off by having my players use?
How are they acquiring it? Probably the smallest one like the Shrike.

Howdy
having a nice day?
I am, you?
You can always read the adventure for ideas
Pretty decent, spring break just started
Oh word, wish there was spring break for work xd
Hey folks! Welcome! As per server rules, please try and stay on topic for the channel. If it's not about D&D, it should go in #non-dnd-topics. Thanks!
How the hell do I get rid of the "done reading? Check out "____". " I can't type anything in some channels because of it lmao

Is it illegal to print dnd charachter sheets?
nope
Thanks
its been done that way for years
the SRD is also free to use
Also where can i find that online
online tools are a pretty new thing
Whats srd?
system reference document
systems reference document
lets third parties make content for dnd
Ohhhhh
The same equivalent as an NFT, whos gonna stop you?
Oh thank you
Made me chuckle thats a good anology
if wotc push this whole online only thing i wouldnt put it past them to try to stop us from printing lol
dndbeyond 🤮
Oh I thought dndbeyond was the best option
dndbeyond is good
Also what is physically needed to play dnd just dices and character sheets?
but dont get trapped
ive already bought tons of books from dndbeyond and made loads of homebrew so im kinda stuck with it
also dndbeyond doesnt teach you how to actually MAKE a character sheet, it just does it all for you
I mean like all you really need is paper
Ohh alright i thought we needed some like board game setup
Yep
the "board game" you might be thinking of is a battle map, which isnt necessary to play
chad theatre of the mind vs virgin battle map
Ooo okay thanks for clearing it up after i finish this church play thing my mom is making me do ima make my charachter sheet god im so excited and i already drew him!!!
nice
Hey I’ve played as a character in DND and would like to learn how to dm a short one shot with my friends. Any advice? Sorry if this isn’t the best place to ask.
Ask questions / advice in #dm-discussion
Thanks
What are the dnd dices all of them?
d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, d20, and d100.
Might as well keep a d2 handy too. A coin, to flip
d100 normally being represented as 2 d10s
Dndbeyond
Google has a free set too. Pretty you can find lots of other free dice rollers out there
DnD Beyond is the prime one. But you can find just about any 5e app with the function
not sure what I mean by prime here lol
I didn't want to say most popular cuz I just joined like 15 minutes ago, and am also extaheeeeeeemely new to DnD
but been messing around with DnD Beyond the past week. got a good amount of polish
Honestly, the only difference between DDB's dice rolling and the major of other ones available is that DDB uses a physical simulation of the rolling rather than rand()
Pick up what suits you best
Head on over to #character-discussion!
thank you!
Hi all relatively new to DND played a campaign when I was 12 I’m now 40. Have purchased the 5e players manual, monster manual, dungeon master manual, starter kit and essentials kit but now think I’m ready to join a game.
Looks like your all set to start running your own game!
I would but I’m not confident I’d be a very good DM as I’ve never done it
I'm assuming you want to DM if you bought the DMG and MM.
Why not DM the adventures in the Starters Set and Essentials Kit?
The most experienced DMs also never DMed before they tried.
You cannot get any experience if you don't do it.
DM’ing can be a fun way to play D&D. At least I enjoy it even if it takes a bit of work!
I enjoy DMing quite a big
Maybe I’ll give it a go
There are D&D Youtubers, such as Matt Colville, Sly Flourish, The DM Lair, Dungeon Dudes, Dungeon Craft, How to be a Great GM, Nerdarchy, Web DM, XP to Level 3, WASD20, Seth Skorkowsky, Esper the Bard, How to D&D, Zee Bashew, Don't Stop Thinking, Icarus Games, Runehammer, Zipperon Disney, and MonarchsFactory, who give advice on DMing and playing.
Thank you I’ll check them out
Ask questions/advice in #dm-discussion
Question I dont have a web cam but I really want to play is not having a web cam a big deal or should not try until I get one
None of my groups use webcams, so it depends on who you play with.
a lot of people don't feel to confident with webcams
That's up to the DM/group. None of my players have their webcams on, however, I (the DM) turn on my camera so they can see me "act" and see what I'm doing (if I'm not talking it's because I'm reading something)
Hats off. I’d feel weird being the only one, even if I was running.
Last night I only realized at the end of the session that I had unknowingly turned off my camera for most of the session so I was "acting" (usually through hand gestures) when roleplaying.
I’m happy to play with no cams
in battle can you do diagonal movements or no?
Yes
so is a diagonal worth 5 ft?

Can be. There are optional rules to make diaginals more realistic in the Dungeon Master’s Guide.
yes
Yes very always wanted to get into and decides bows the day
To enter a square, you must have at least 1 square of movement left, even if the square is diagonally adjacent to the square you’re in. (The rule for diagonal movement sacrifices realism for the sake of smooth play. The Dungeon Master’s Guide provides guidance on using a more realistic approach.)
Diagonal movement can’t cross the corner of a wall, large tree, or other terrain feature that fills its space.
thanks

So.... When making a character... You choose your proficiencies immediately?
Have you read the free Basic Rules yet?
I've got the player's handbook in front of me lol
Follow the steps chapter by chapter then. Skill proficiencies is at the end.
You get proficiencies from your class, background, and/or race.
I'll hang tight then! Thank you! So you don't "choose" them necessarily
Aside from how you craft your character in whole
Some races give you profiencies (skill/tools/weapons).
Classes may give you profiiencies (skills/tools/weapons).
Backgrounds will give you proficiencies (skills/tools).
Alright so I suppose my question lies more in proficiency increases. So... At level 20.. if you make it that far lol... You would get a +6 modifier to any and ALL of your proficiencies?
I see what you mean about background/race/class proficiencies btw
That's your Proficiency Bonus, which is added to any weapon, tool, and skill you are proficient in.
Good stuff. Thank you for helping clear that up!
should i read all the town encounters and NPCs ahead of time for LMOP campaign? it's pretty overwhelming
I would suggest you do. The more prepared you are the less you need to read on the spot.
Take notes, short descriptions of the NPCs.
it's such a hassle doing your first D&D and DM session, preparing to read up on all the rules and campaign, etc
DMing can be complicated and overwhelming. That's probably why there aren't that many DMs.
it's a massive time sink
I spend my free time preparing for the next session (if not months in advance) instead of spending it with my wife. 😛
I find making an adventure outline is super helpful
I try to have a one page "cheat sheet" for each location (eg the town) with the information I need to know
The first session isn't so bad, I don't think: have folks intro the characters, get them to bite onto a plot hook (what is the problem to solve?), a little bit of NPC stuff, some combat, boom, done. Here's Colville's advice on session 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1K8hGhpQzKg
would taking a few short notes on basically any proper noun be a good rule of thumb?
If it helps you!
So uh… what’s a saving throw.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/using-ability-scores#SavingThrows
A saving throw--also called a save--represents an attempt to resist a spell, a trap, a poison, a disease, or a similar threat. You don’t normally decide to make a saving throw; you are forced to make one because your character or monster is at risk of harm.
To make a saving throw, roll a d20 and add the appropriate ability modifier. For example, you use your Dexterity modifier for a Dexterity saving throw.
A saving throw can be modified by a situational bonus or penalty and can be affected by advantage and disadvantage, as determined by the DM.
A saving throw in thematic terms is the person using their body or mind to avoid interacting with an enemy. When they cast a spell, or dodging a fire breath ect.
Certain spells or other effects will try to effect someone. Instead of rolling to hit AC, the person must roll a d20 and add their modier to the roll to not be effected.
An example would be you throw a fireball, you dont 'roll to hit' its assumed thats its GOING to hit them. The targets must roll a 'dex' save rolling a d20 and add their dexterity modifier to the roll. Their goal is to roll higher than the spell casters DC to try to avoid some damage
So in game It may go like this:
Player 1: I Cast fireball on the White dragon. I rolled 20 damage, if he Passes the save the White Dragon takes only 10. My Spell DC is 15
DM: Ok I rolled a 8 his dexterity Saving throw modifier is +3 so he rolled an 11, which fails. Meaning the white dragon takes full damage.
what is the first thing i should do when a start
set your phone to vibrate
Do i only need a charachter sheet or i also need other sheets? Or only 1 paper “im printing it”
@floral flame Not sure what you mean, but character sheets often have multiple pages because the second/third page has additional info like items, character traits, spells, etc...
Yeaa that
Do i need thos or only the main kne
Dice! Physical or digital.

I would look them over and see if there's any useful info. Also sometimes just having the extra paper to take notes is very helpful
Watching a vid rn how to dill it out
…I might have misread the question. 😅
Fill*
For example as you pick up inventory items, you'll want some space to write down what all you picked up. Or the names of other party members, NPC/event info, and so on
Oh ok
But strictly speaking, for like a barbarian or something, you probably can live with just the first page, if you already know the info that's on the other pages.
You don't absolutely have to print out an established character sheet at all, you can just use a regular piece of paper and simply write all the info on it. I've made tons of characters over the years on plain lined notebook paper.
On April 7-9, local game stores in the U.S. and Canada are hosting a series of learn-to-play events, and you’re invited! Get the full details here.
Yup, that's the old school way!
If you cast invisibility on a Rouge will they always get the sneak attack damage?
Not if something gives them disadvantage, no
One should expect a rogue to get sneak attack on most attacks, though
they will have advantage while invisible so in most cases
Yippee
Just an fyi, you also get sneak attack if your target is within 5' of one of your party
They do?
So, always be attacking something that the melee guy is also attacking
Free damage fr
Yes, you don't have to sneak to get sneak attack
You do not have to be stealthing to get sneak attack
Stealth gives you advantage against your target and that's what triggers the sneak attack daamge
That's misleading
never assume anything in d&d works any kind of way based on its name alone
The chill touch spell, for example, isn't touch and it doesn't do cold damage
But lots of people assume that because of the name, somehow ignoring the actual description of the spell
I feel like chill touch's name makes sense if you read it though
Dont' think of Sneak Attack as Must-be-Stealthing-Attack, think of it more as "sneaky attack," like a sneaky dirty trick moreso that requiring stealth
So does sneak attack, tbh
well, maybe not the name, but if you read it, you can very plainly see how it works
Yeah but I didn't know the within 5 feet of the party thing
Well, it's in the basic description of the aiblity
I've never played rogue man 😰
They're easy
If you read the class description, you'll see all the wonderful thigns they can do
One of the easiest classes for new players tbh
You don't need advantage on the attack roll if another enemy of the target is within 5 feet of it, that enemy isn't incapacitated, and you don't have disadvantage on the attack roll.
Yep, rogue is great for new players, they really have almost no abilities which require recharge, eveyrthing just works
Which removes a whole layer of management
I remember my first dnd character to this day, the extremely pacifist assassin rogue
you may think oh wow invisibility is gonna be so OP, but the invisibility spell states this The spell ends for a target that attacks or casts a spell.
you want greater invisibility
good mileage and good spell 😊
Oh
it’s there for a reason, spell would be too op

I am a player but I was asked too dm the next campaign I have a few ideas for the black market some minor evil nobles and other such but I am a bit stuck
What campaign you running
I am running a campaign that I am thinking up that is connected to my now dms campaign
Take to your DM but do you have an idea of how the campaign will run? And end goals
Yes I have a few ideas but I don’t want to set things in concrete but I plan on them being thrusted upon bahamut sooner or later
Have you DMd before? I’d suggest maybe run a couple of one shots in that world to flesh out a new area, something may happen in one of those that you can build off

What's a fun/good level 3 character for a one shot that takes place on a ship at sea?
Not trying to be overpowered, just not useless.
That doesn't give a lot of parameters. Will it be mainly combat? Roleplay? Will there be any exploration or puzzle-solving?
lots of options would be good. do you want to do something thematic?
I'm just not familiar with the dynamics of ocean encounters, I don't know what's useful/useless to have
I imagine a fair amount of combat
It's a homebrewed one shot, I don't know too much about the details
The setup is a stationary ship, so I don't think it can dock or do land-based stuff
I would talk to your DM.
something with a swim speed would probably be useful. Fathomless warlock, sea elf, triton for example.
Wait how does swimming work without a swim speed?
Without a swim speed, one foot of movement costs double.

Hello, I'm completely new as well
I'm trying to put together a party irl with some friends, but I'm most likely the one who's going to DM
Do you have advice on resources like books or channels for a complete beginner? Like general lore and rules
Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
If you want rules, get a copy of the Players Handbook, its the primary rule book of the game. Start with the free basic rules though before investing money
Run an adventure for your first time DMing, whether that's an official adventure or just a single-session one-shot.
Lore will change from DM to DM, game to game.
The game has 50 years of lore, but it spans various different settings which might or might not be used in a game you actually play.
OldMan has a list of YouTube channels for DM advice. I like Matt Covlille in particular.
I've read over the basic rules, I'll try to get the handbook and the videos, thank you :))
The established lore from printed products has also changed over the years as editions have come and gone.
If you're thinking of DMing, head on over to the #dm-discussion channel.
Best to look at the established lore generally as helpful suggestions rather than some form of fixed canon.
Makes sense, I just wanted to make sure I wasn't way off canon
There is officially no canon
You're the DM. You can do whatever.
Canon is what you make of it at your table (if you're the DM).
Canon is established at your game table.
I use the Forgotten Realms setting but I add in or tossed away stuff I don't like (especially from 4E).
It's also the official statement of the game's publishers

How do you determin how high your saving throw is?
Each class gives proficiency in at least two saving throws. The wizard, for example, is proficient in Intelligence saves. As with skill proficiencies, proficiency in a saving throw lets a character add his or her proficiency bonus to saving throws made using a particular ability score.
So a wizard with + 2 in intelligens has to roll what🧐
It's determined by the thing being saved against, whether part of a monster statblock or a DC the DM decides in the moment.
Cant see me out of it.. 😂
Is it described somewhere..
..
Lets say burning hands..
Whats is the roll..
It's the caster's DC.
Ah, not the saving throw but YOUR spell save DC. That's in the spellcasting details for the class. It's 8 + relevant spellcasting modifier + proficiency bonus. So 8 + 2 (Intelligence modifier here) + 2 (proficiency) for a total of 12. The creature needs to roll a 12 or higher to take half damage; otherwise, it takes the full amount.
How do I post in character discussion
You just treat it like any other channel.
Make sure you're clicking #character-discussion and not the archived #1045165827068002374.
Ah thx
Ok..
But what If Im a 4 lvl fighter..
Whats my roll to avoid damage from burning hands
You roll a Dex saving throw.
So If i have 13 in dex
It depends on who/what is casting Burning Hands, so it might be in the statblock or something the DM has to decide.
That's a +1 modifier bonus
The DM will tell you. You don't know until then.
So its the DC of the other Guy that determin your roll
Exactly.
Hmm hmmm 😂
Wow the rules really needs to be read up..
2nd ed is stuck in My brain 😂
For a cleric is there much of a difference between 10 CHA and 12 CHA? I thought the number of turn undeads or something was based on your cleric's charisma, but maybe I'm thinking of something else.
Clerics rely on Wisdom for spellcasting, so your Cha bonus affects skills and saving throws. I don't think it has anything to do with Turn Undead.
It does not. Turn Undead is a Channel Divinity option. The number of Channel Divinity charges you get between rests depends only on your cleric level.
And any spell DC from any other Channel Divinity skill would use your Wisdom modifier
Isn't it short rests?
Yes Channel Divinity is short rest
Whoops thanks for the clarification. Short or long rest.

Everything.
please, do explain to me what is this... "everything"
You can, more or less, do whatever you want, as long as your character could physically do it or the dm allows it.
You wanna eat a barrel?
Go for it.
You wanna kill every peasant you see?
You do you.
You wanna be a robot gnome?
Or a rabbit person?
Or a jar of jelly?
Its basically an RPG/open world game but on a table

Theres some online places to find games, but if anyone in your area starts a session, thats also an option
Character sheet and dice.
You can play in person by asking around and getting a group together.
Or you could play online with things like Roll20 and DnD Beyond.
Well, maybe just focus on making some semblance of a character first
That way you can focus on learning only things relevant for the first little while, then branch out
I might need someone to teach me. or just help me a bit

do you get stealth advantage in darkness?
wait what
Neither the player's handbook nor the DM's guide specify. It's up to the DM.
If I were DMing, I'd say that a character with darkvision would get an advantage on stealth versus non-darkvision-having-characters (assuming no other relevant perception like blindsight or tremorsense) in an area of complete darkness or an area that's dimly lit.

Not sure what you mean by ways to play. You can play in person or online, you can play in real time or asynchronously, you can play via voice or via text.
There's also westmarches, which is drop-in-style sessions.
is there any that are text sessions?
Sure, it's called play-by-post. Besides the channels here, check out Role Gate, RPGCrossing, Gamers Plane, D&D Beyond's or RPGnet’s forums, and Reddit’s r/pbp.
