internal ethics and or morals that drive a character to do what they do.
part of the overall background of what makes a character tick. useful for roleplaying but not so much for anythign else.
howevver DND really should be about roleplaying
do you know a way to start getting in to dnd?

I know what ideal is know
yeah i know, but.... it could be just in the context of specifiying rules. like, i mean the LE got someone killed, you could say "looks like PvP is an option here 🙂 "
okay, welll, let me rephrase. that is what I personally would do, YMMV
um, thats literally what teh LE did.
according to the OP
Sounds more like the LE got a Chaotic player executed for breaking laws.
or did i misread?
Punishing unwanted player behavior in-character is a form of passive aggression, tbh. It only builds tension and escalates conflict without solving the problem
ok ok fine. i withdraw my suggestion.
im literally re-considering what youre saying 🙂
part of the problem here is that i misread/assumed somthing that wasnt the case. i thought the LE killed the CG. my reading comprehension apparently sucks.
I don't think James did a great job explaining the situation though. I'm not even clear on whether or not there was a problem since they mentioned that everyone was having fun
yeah i sometimes get an idea and take off in one direction. not really a good trait tbh
What’s a good starter spell for necromancer
Seemed like he had a more personal issue and was trying to get insight on whether or not his issue was acceptable or not? I know I've done that when I had personal issues with a game or how things play out between players
If my players dont follow my linear path i developed, i just TPK them and find new players.
i mean, i dont do that.
i just want to
stares in doubt
Chill Touch summons a skeletal hand that drains energy
Ok
Move Earth makes grave robbing easy
Ok
You should play a Elequounce bard.
Focusing on politics and desire to become ruler or president.
^ i think thats a joke?
i mean for an expert player in a complex campaign with a bad*ss DM thqat would be aweome... begineers maybe not so much 🙂
There’s so many options of flavoring a build.
The focus can be many different things.
Yes it’s a playful joke and a idea
but focuses have to be dark and murder based, like vengeance or anything broody!
Wait, politics....
i was kinda leaning toward bard
prob smthin smaller scale than politics tho
The Elequounce bard didn’t choose that life.
The people in his life chose that role for him.
Since he is the worlds best talker.
His words inspire the nations around.
All encompassing his desire just to lecture all willing to listen.
He’s a natural born leader
bards are awesome at higher levels, i probably wouldnt recommend them for a beginner in a low level campaign...
Bards die easy :p
Level 3-6 Elequounce bard is epic
im sure many will disagree with me, but ive often found new players get discouraged with bards lack of combat and limited healing. buffs are only fun for a little while
Just sayin….
I guess it depends on your playstyle
They are a flavorful class.
My favorite class is Druid
Agreed
Bards are awesome support classes, and can fill any role as back up
i dont really know what my playstyle is yet 🤔
my strong suit is backstories lol
would you recommend them for a new player tho.
thats where im like nah
But not everyone can play support well, and new players might have an especially hard time getting into that role since most newbies focus on stabby
ok dunl doesn't like me lol
well, that and remembering far too much detail about the entirety of Critcal Role campaign 2
but i think id be good playing support
im still going to suggest to ** brand new beginners** that somethign easier to play than a bard might be a good starting point to begin your DND experience.
regardless of dunls ❌'s
True @quick thicket i reccomend for full casters maybe Cleric-Druid.
For half casters Artificer or Paladin.
That way you don’t have to be locked into spells.
You can chose different spells each day.
Nothing worse then choosing the wrong spells.
Then being stuck with them for ever.
I think I'll roll with advising a Fighter with a Entertainer background, and maybe picking up Bard later if you really want the spells
My first class ever was Moon Druid.
So I have a bias in that department.
Anything I say of Druid is all bias just to clarify
Battlemaster (I think?) Fighters make great offensive support characters with their habit of tripping and disarming enemies
gotcha 👍
i kinda feel like druid would be better to dump tramua on craft a backstory for... hmm
fighter seems fun too
And you don't have to mess with spells until you're more comfortable with the actual gameplay
let me nuance my position:
"sure you can play a bard if you want to, but i might suggest a more straightforward class like Cleric/Fighter/Wizard/Rogue or variants as your first ever character. Just my opinion, but its up to you of course"
Moon Druid for a more versatile caster, melee or full casting.
Star Druid for full casting.
Can’t go wrong either one.
Whatever you decide tho fighter or ranger/cleric any other class.
Remember just have fun and this character could die session 1 lol
I like Wildfire Druids 😄
^^ word
I love them!!! Nothing like teleporting the whole party every round
I really need to find a group and play again :p curse introversion!
^ look into "Beyond the Chaos" discord, it's text based and lots of groups. i just joined havent played yet but looks interesting.
Would you be willing to dm me the link?
Also that level 6 ability casting spells through the wildfire spirit.
Sooo freakin crazy doing that lol.
Gotta love that subclass!
It ’s definitely third best subclass for me in Druid.
However aton of fun!
Westmarch?
rule 0, right? will do!
got some great ideas now, thanks!
i cant, i dont have invite perms. i dont remember how i found the link in the first place, but im sure you can look it up?
Welcome!
Bot yelled at you
haha it sure did.
my bad on that
@bold wind I dm'd you the link, as you requested 🙂
Rule 0 being... DM makes the rules?
enthusiastically seconded, despite all my prior posts that appear to the contrary.
DM is final arbiter of the rules
Rules referee if you will
Though house rules are quite common
Not a ton of people play by pure Rules As Written (RAW)
The game isn't really intended to be played by strict adherence to RAW
it says somewhere official, maybe the PHB and DMG both, that the DM is final authority of all rules, regardless of the written rules. that is called "Rule 0".
in reality, you should only use it as a last resort, or at least be perceived as to not using it much
I favor RAW, but I'm fine with homebrew rules as long as I know them in advance. I've had issues with a DM who liked to rule against me when I did something new
Though it can certainly be played by pure RAW, but the DM is going to have to be making rulings. RAW will always have to be read and interpreted.
In reality you should be using it as much or as little as your group is comfortable with, there's no hard and fast rule about how much is okay to use lol
I also prefer RAW, but will go RAI if raw doesnt exist or is ambiguous or vague. and i attempt to include players on the thought process/logic of RAI decisions.
For me RAI trumps RAW
but homebrew trumps RAW, though it should be clearly defined in session 0
Because if you think that RAW says something that conflicts with what's in Sage Advice, then you're misinterpreting RAW.
Agreed with that, 100%.
i think we're saying the same thing, because (for me) if RAW doesnt make sense then it is (imo) vauge or ambiguous and therefore demands a RAI interpretation.
If (all of) RAW were flawlessly easy to interpret, Sage Advice wouldn't exist.
again we're saying the same thing, i think
looks up Sage Advice
Sage Advice is the official rules clarification document
also looks up Sage Advice
It's named after a regular column in the old Dragon Magazine, which served the same purpose
so, in other words, Sage Advice is RAW.
enh, not technically
its the new RAW
kinda but not exactly
RAW 2.0
If you have a question as to what RAI is on a given RAW, then the answer might be in SA
It's how the rule writers intended the rules to work
omg we are in #dnd-newcomers lol
how are the mods not yelling at us
Essentially “Raw” the brown bear can climb a sky scraper like Spider-Man.
Because of “climbing speed”
However that’s not realistic
^ that is a very good example. well done
But I like the image in my head that presents now
and the bear, once atop, says "RAW(r)"
Spider-Bear, Spider-Bear, does whatever a Spider-Bear does
can he swing from a web? no he cant hes a bear.
“Rawlistic”
Polymorph says "The new form can be any beast whose challenge rating is equal to or less than the target's (or the target's level, if it doesn't have a challenge rating)." Does this mean that a pixie for example, which is cr 1/4, can only transform into another cr 1/4th creature?
Sounds like it. Wouldn't want to give the pixie the ability to turn into a dragon without using a more appropriate spell
so if a player used it, would the dm have to convert their level to a cr?
Hello everyone
The spell specifies target's level if the target doesn't have a CR
yeah but do monsters have levels, cause if not then how would you know what you can turn into if you have a level and the monster has a cr
or would you just do like cr 10 = level 10
Yeah I'm running into that hiccup now, let's see
Giant ape level 7 best option
Unless your Dm allows T-Rex
I guess CR would convert to level like that, yeah?
Yeah t-Rex is cr8 most dms will not allow that.
So Giant Ape is the way to go!
reason I was asking is cause the conjure woodland being spell lets you summon pixies, and they get polymorph so I was curious if they could become something with a higher cr as long as the enemy had that. Seems not tho
Giant ape is cr7 to have polymorph ya need to be at least level 7 to cast
They can polymorph you all… is your Dm letting you choose what woodland beings you want to conjure?
wait thats true, they can polymorph us
also idk we haven't had session 1 yet lol. Im preparing strategies in advance
Spell for woodland beings and animals usually Dm picks
Trouble is, you have the brains of what you're polymorphed into
Personality and alignment you hold tho^
Do you?
Yeah
"The target's game statistics, including mental ability scores, are replaced by the statistics of the chosen beast. It retains its alignment and personality."
Nothing else other then personality and alignment
Giant Ape army is a go!
woo
Agreed^
they have an int of -2
Well you don't turn into a Giant Ape for the physics exam
Summon Mites and don’t look back.
whats a mite
Then your Dm bans the spell^ hahaha
“Blood boiling Hex”
"Girls like swarms of things, right?"
dang
They have a move that requires no saving throw or check.
They are nuisances however you can technically summon them.
Within the means of that spell
Basically it’s a 1d6 bane.
They also have a burrow speed.
So ya “hex” then then make them burrow
Absolute horrible creatures but yeah stick to pixies lol
also can you cast it on all monsters, or does it not effect super strong ones
Gotta love animal shapes. Super high level spell.
But kinda crazy
I don’t think Polymorph works on shape shifters
doesn't polymorph require a willing target?
Dragons are shape shifters
No you can polymorph the bbeg into a worm
did not know that
I gotta read the spell again I think shapeshifters are the limitation
if its unwilling it has to make a wisdom saving throw to avoid the effect
also it doesnt work on shapeshifters
Or creature with 0 hit points
which means as long as the bbeg fails the save it can become a cow
and Idk if it can succeed 8 saving throws
are they actually tho
Your dm is supposed to pick your woodland being
cause I thought it was just metallic dragons
I’m almost positive
not all dragons
Same with animals
Most adult and ancients id say
I guess we'll see what happens
Maybe just Aincients
wdym
Basically blues arent shapeshifters Gold ones are and etc
yeah ik
but theres a lot of dragons and I hadn't looked thgrough them all yet, just a couple metallic ones
Although the gold dragon sais it “polymorphs” itself.
So maybe it’s not entirely shapeshifter
but from what im seeing, the metallic ones can change shape and the others cant
I think that shapeshifter only applies to creatures that are actual shapeshifters, like were-beasts
As Dunl said, it would appear in the stat block
A dragon with Change shape says this "Change Shape. The dragon magically polymorphs into a humanoid or beast that has a challenge rating no higher than its own, or back into its true form. It reverts to its true form if it dies. Any equipment it is wearing or carrying is absorbed or borne by the new form (the dragon's choice).
In a new form, the dragon retains its alignment, hit points, Hit Dice, ability to speak, proficiencies, Legendary Resistance, lair actions, and Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma scores, as well as this action. Its statistics and capabilities are otherwise replaced by those of the new form, except any class features or legendary actions of that form."
metallic ones are
Ah, ok
cause like gold, silver, brass, copper, crystal all have change shape
and ones like red, green, blue, and white dont
Uhh how do I submit a submission into the looking for DM channel
Ooh ight ty
question does the munuvour disarming strike work agiants a monk with way of the open hand
I don’t know what the ability sais
You mean the Disarming Attack maneuver?
I don’t see anywhere in Open Hand that says they can’t be disarmed. Am I missing something?
Obviously if the monk’s not holding anything, they can’t be disarmed (but that’s true of any creature).
I think they are asking if you can disarm a giant using that
Hey, I'm looking for some peeps who can teach me about how to play. I think I have a pretty basic understanding on how it all works. Just don't know how to get started?

no, I'm Alpharius
Well technically they call themselves a weapon so -
Like im not tryna get dark but like if im holding a sword his arms aint immune to slashing so
And i can totly swing him around if im huge or collosole sized
If you are talking mechanically, then its still no. Flurry of Blows specifies "unarmed strikes" for example. So it Disarming Strike does not work
Will it be funny if i make a wizard who only uses lightning magic?
So basically you wanna go as electro wizard from clash of clans & clash royale... very funny
Go for it if you want to play a lightning wizard play a lightning wizard, scribes wizard mghtbbe your best bet to change the damage of some spells to lightning
Disarm his arms
Aslong as ur with the right party and their ok with gore obviously
And the dm is ok with it
Equal to its challenge rating??????
So it can just polymorph into a beast with similar str to the dragon then go back to the dragon form?
I don’t think there are beasts above cr 8
I don't understand when it says : This spell doesn't count against your spells knowns
It’s a spell you don’t have to prep.
It’s already in your spell list
Because of subclass/ feat/ race/ background
Certain classes can only learn a certain number of spells per level. That bit lets you know that you can know and use that spell in addition to however many you get from that class
Hey i'm making my first character and just wanted to know if a warforged paladin could work/be effective?
Yes and yes
sure! warforged are versatile and fit pretty well as just about anything imo
Thanks! :)
im looking into trying dnd to see if its a game that would be fun for me but im not really sure where to start

imagen an orc going stealth by intimidation
I shout at you enough, you turn around and can no longer see me
intimidate (You do not see me)
Can we play with 1gm and 1player
You can, although you'd likely want to use the sidekick rules, because encounters in D&D aren't really designed to be taken on by one character solo.
Can i play solo?
Alone? No. You need atleast 1 dm and 1 player to do it. I mean i guess you can but it loses a lot of the fun of DND.
Fair enough
not true actually, sorry
yes, you can play alone. There are a few ways to do it
- Though not necessarily D&D there are gamebooks that give a solo RPG experience with simple rules and a story to follow. It may not be precisely what you want, but it's better than nothing if solo play is what you want.
- There are solo adventures designed to be played alone that you can find on DM's Guild or DrivethruRPG, such as Tower of High Sorcery.
- There are groups that publish rules for solo play. Avalon Solo Adventures has stuff that is part-gamebook, part-D&D that can be pretty fun though it doesn't have as much leeway as 'actual' D&D as it mostly functions like a gamebook with D&D rules.
- You can just buy a module and use either a battlemat or virtual tabletop (I use roll20) and DM yourself. I did that in my spare time for awhile and had a lot of fun with it. I've moved on, for the moment, to doing other things but will likely come back to it. There are books such as 'DM Yourself' that you can get on drivethruRPG that will have tables you can use for randomness if you don't trust yourself to be fair and then you just follow a few simple rules such as 'don't read the background section of the module' and 'skim non-boxed text to try to minimize cheating and spoilers'. Then you just create a party of adventurers...or one plus a sidekick...and have fun, use your imagination, and go for it.
No worries 🙂 have fun
hi-can anyone dm me more dnd servers

is you character backstory can your character obtain a item like say a "dark grimoire" that will help them in their campain?
what dose allies and organisations mean?
howdy! I recently found dnd, and my autism stuck onto it like a magnet but also am confused, because of autism ( I struggle with context a LOT ) what is cost when you roll for ability scores? I see cost is in other sections 2
spellcasting class is like warlock right?
oh really??!
I looked in the dnd basic rules and it says something about ability score points ( confusion )
Hi how do I decide what animal I want to be
As in what you wildshape into as a druid?
ok ty!
Can you be more specific? Are you playing a druid?
Spellcasting classes include clerics, druids, wizards, sorcerers, and warlocks.
would paladin be seen somewhat like a spellcaster? or nah
Rangers and paladins are half-casters.
Question on wild magic: "Each creature within 30 feet of you becomes invisible for the next minute. The invisibility ends on a creature when it attacks or casts a spell."
does the sorceror is counted amongst the invisble creatures?
Yes.
Thanks!

what would yall say are the best spells as a low level star druid?
would I be able to dm someone asking a quick question?
It is generally best to ask in open chat. After all, one person's answer might be incorrect...
But if you really want to ask, I've got a few moments and you can DM me if you don't feel comfortable asking in the main channel.

Hey, I don't know how to play, how can I get started?
Do I really need to buy the starter kit?
no, though having some of the books can help
Okay, thx
Starter Set will give you the basic rules in print, a beginner adventure and a set of dice. If you're playing in person, it's pretty convenient.
If you're playing online, then you probably don't need it.
hey guys, just got to lvl 11 on my campaign, what are neat lvl 6th spells that i could take for my Scouter Divination Wizard?
oh okay, thanks
Hey do anyone know on youtube a good dnd how to play video? I get so confused watching them and i want to get into it because my 5 year old cousin plays it with her friends and its so fun to watch😭
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.

Thanks you for your feedback! I have looked through a fair amount of that information already, even toyed around with creating a character although I'm not sure what normally stipulates a character being allowed in a game. I'm sure its DM specific to an extent. I did have a curiosity question about races marked as legacy, would they still be allowed in games or is that again campaign specific?
When it comes to finding a group, is it typical that it has to be organized far in advance or are there events that sporadically start? Hypothetically if i wanted to jump into a game "right now" is that even remotely feasible, or is that borderline heretical question lol?

It takes a lot of prep time for the DM. They will also need to interview potential players to see if they're a good fit at their table.
D&D isn't like a video game lobby where you can drop in easily.
Not so much "heretical" as it is simply unrealistic
There just aren't really people sitting around waiting 24/7 to run games
I fully respect that fact and I guess my question was less about fully joining a campaign and more about if there was anything within the community that resembled "just messing around" that i could use to learn
Yea I 100% understand what you're saying and I realize that a full blown game at the drop of a hat is completely ridiculous
Remember that there are way more players than DMs. I can't speak for all DMs but for me free time is limited and I doubt there would be DMs willing to "mess around."
There are DMs who are friendly to new players and willing to help them learn.
Thats a fair point. Admittedly I am so new to the internal workings of the game that these are really just curiosity questions to give myself a better understanding of the structure of the community.
I'm asking these more to create a realistic understanding of what to expect, rather than to find a D&D "Pick up game" if you understand what I mean. I've got next to no reference as far as having spoken to anyone about it.
That's fine. That's what this channel is for and members are the server are here to help.
Generally you have to find a group of people to play with.
what book talks about derro and quaggoth?
Derro are in Mordenkainen's Tome of FOes
Quaggoth statblock is in the Monster Manual
oh they're not playable
nope
Actually another question I have is: Are there any kinds of designations (within the community) that would describe what level of silly and creative ideas they tolerate vs hardcore rules? Say for instance I wanted to do something like make an Intimidation Goliath Rogue that was raised by a group of thieves as an orphan, sucks horribly at sneaking but when he screams "YOU CANT SEE ME" at someone they tend to look at the wall and agree. Is that kind of nonsense going to be tolerated widely by the community or am i going to really have to dig to find a DM that would put up with that?
Not every humanoid race/species is available for PCs
You'd really just have to dig to find a DM who'd tollerate that. The first question is how would screaming "you can't see me" work mechanically to make someone not see you.
There's no standard of acceptance for nonstandard stuff.
can someone eli5 underdark? is it like under meaning beneath the topland and is a series of cave or underdark meaning figuratively lands that's wild and dark?
THe Underdark is a subterranean realm.
oh ok so like series of caves below the topland?
Lots of interconnected caves and caverns underground which support a complex biome of life
Yes
interesting thanks!
the Underdark is undreground
You're dealing with other people and not rules.
Finding a good DM/group is like dating — there maybe drama, ghosting, bad relationships, etc but eventually you find "the one."
DM and coplayers / table, yes
if u want right now maybe try finding Adventurer League games but that's a whole different topic
We got a local communities/groups that organizes AL games almost daily so check out if you got local communities on where u live.
There aren't any designations for tiers of acceptability for levels of shenanigans and such like you're describing, but important terms to understand in that general context:
- RAW - Rules as Written - what the rules written in the books say
- RAI - Rules as Intended - what the game designers intend the written text to mean (sometimes it's unclear)
- RAF - Rules as Fun - playing with the rules, but making sure that fun is the top priority
- "Rule of Cool" - allowing players to do cool things that aren't supported by the rules becuase it's cool and fun, the level to which a given DM will allow this varies greatly
- House Rules/Table Rules - alterations to the basic rules that a given group uses
I'm providing these terms so that you can better discuss these matters with others in the community
Thank you that's a pretty good thing for me to comprehend. Like I built that Goliath Rogue and im rolling like 27 intimidation checks at lvl 1 and (to be fair Im not sure how far that would even get me in reality) but I'm always down for creating some fun dynamics and I wanted to know if that kind of idea is worth pursuing
I guess I'm in a position where I need to see some actual game mechanics play out infront of me to get a grasp
tbh, I'm not quite sure how you're rolling lots of 27 intimidation checks at lvl 1
prolly nat 20 then with 20 cha via stats roll + bonuses then +2 prof
maybe I did some changes and stuff in the character builder that arnt typical. I guess thats another thing i need to know whats acceptable
i did the points builder style of skill allocation
what charisma does your character have right now
so that's +3 max
right but intimidation is +7
oh expertise i guess
did you take expertiese in intimidation?
yes
i see
so you're rolling a 27 if you get a nat 20, ok
about 5% of your intimidation checks will come out 27
yea that would be high end i just threw out a number cause im playing with the dice and thats the last one that rolled
this automatic dice roller thing is super cool
intimidation and persuasion are +7 deception is +5 i was building a character to really play into the joke of him convincing people he was sneaky
i guess if you're going with that character, you need a DM that will allow you to intimidate NPCs. and find a co-players that are fine w/ u doing that.
right right, the only reason i even brought that idea up here was to get a feel for if my dumb ideas would be tolerated lol
i just have that sense of humor where I want to build things that bring a lot of levity while actually being effective
A good DM isn't going to stop players from trying out "dumb ideas." Players just need to remind themselves that they may face the consequences of said "dumb ideas."
haha that was diplomatically stated
^ true. i think high level npc/creatures won't give much consideration if ur a goliath since they can feel out that ur just a new adventurer.
There are levels of reasonableness, immersion, and seriousness which vary greatly from group to group
but yea it depends on table to table.
Thats very fair. I appreciate you all chiming in to answer me I'm pretty excited to get involved in this game.
if you find the one table for you please do treasure it.
it's really hard to get a table that you really jive with.
I fully have the capacity to play and enjoy it with a reverence of seriousness. But the notion of accomplishing tasks while also making the table laugh does appeal to me.
Yea I for sure can appreciate that notion.
Do you guys find that there is a lot of unnecessary drama within groups?
generally I mean. Not within your own.
I'm finding that as I proceed through my 30's that my tolerance for people creating problems is exponentially decreasing and I'm not sure if its a commonality, but I have heard horror stories.
I saw a great post on Reddit recently, I wish I'd saved it, but I didn't. it was a survey asking people about the level of seriousness they preferred in their games and for each answer, they provided a piece of media as an example. There was the "complete silliness" (I forget which media went with that), then there was the "mostly serious, but some comedy" for which the example was Star Wars, then there was the "completely serious" example which was LoTR.
I've seen more stories of such on the internet than I've personally experienced in reality
But people gonna people
yea hahahaha and i've witnessed some groups crash and burn bec of non dnd stuff too
I always think of the Ork's from Warhammer 40k. One of if not arguably the most powerful collective of magic users in the universe but so dimwitted that they will their beliefs such as "Red paint makes things faster" Into existence. Complete comedy in the right circumstances, but in one of the most horribly dark universes.
do you remember which of the 3 was voted highest?
Yea thats fair, likely out of game antics more than anything.
but then again the groups i'm with got non dnd activities too so i guess it's a lil skewed
^ fair as well
man i remember one group died cuz of a love triangle ooc
Should i hold off completely on making characters until I'm told what's allowed (sources and so on) or am i safe to make them if I restrict sources and dont use class features and so on?
Making characters is good practice for making characters and helps you learn how the game works
It also primes the pump of creativity to get you thinking about characters you might want to play
Lots of people also just like making characters
Thats fair and I agree, but more specifically I'm asking if i use the character builder on d&d beyond, are they generally accepted anywhere, or is it very much that you have to talk to the DM before you make one.
or alternatively might the DM be willing to tell you what you need to change after you've already made one
I'm asking so that I don't marry myself to a character as far as being invested then am never allowed to play it for some reason.
Depends on the DM, I think most DMs tell you what is not allowed if they just don't make sence in their story
The main things are A) ability score method B) certain race options not being allowed in certain settings C) whether the DM allows supplemental material that isn't in the core books like Blood Hunter
I would definitely recommend that if your character concept centers around going outside the game rules, that you not get too attached to playing that character.
Thank you all for your insights. I'm looking forward to trying to find a game to join. I feel that I have an insane amount to learn before I can competently join one, but It's given me a lot to consider. I'm off to sleep, hope everyone has a great day.
You really don't have to know all that much before you play
Good night! Hope you get a game tomorrow~
Which races from MToF or MotM are not allowed for PCs? Pretty new to DnD, and I picked an Eladrin since I liked the race abilities.
After checking MotM, it seems eladrin is a playable race. I'll make sure to check w the DM as well... and probably make a back up char. JIC 😂
Ty😊
First thing you wanna do -v- is read the pinned messages

Kind of new to DnD. How would I start off? There aren't really any people in my area who would play, sadly. There seem to be some groups in this discord server but I don't know if they take newcomers.
same here
always keep a eye out for the #looking-for-players announcement. Most of the adds which I saw were also open for beginners.
but in the meantime you can check the basic rules for dnd.

Nice to see you. Actually I am not even a beginner yet, but really interested in this game.
Same. I used to roleplay via writing so DnD isn't necessarily new to me. Just the in-game content.
Oh if its game mechanics you want I'm your guy
Well, I wouldn't mind the help. I get how you use the d20, but what about the other dices.
Depends
the other ones are less often used, most often for damage.
often its damage for a d4,d6,d8,d10,d12
depending on your weapon
or spell
d100 is rare
In D&D the other dice are mainly used for rolling to determine how much damage an attack or spell deals, how much health a healing spell recovers, and how much health a character gains from leveling up.
Occasionally a written adventure may also call for rolling on a table of random options.
Oh okay. Are there specific sites or such used by DnD players to play the game online.
The general idea is that the d20 gets used for checks/saves/attacks, but the other dice are more specialized and come in when a specific effect tells you to roll one.
Gotcha
There are numerous virtual tabletop sites (VTTs) that players use, such as Roll20, which offers a digital battle map and other tools.
There are also loads of online tool sets and resources, like D&DBeyond which is an official character generator and knowledge base.
You can also play on Discord. Avrae, a handy bot, can help handle rolls and track stats.
Oh, yea Im already using D&DBeyond. Just wondering how people play it on discord. Just by using bots?
Well voice and text. Bots just help with dice rolling and initiative usually. Avrae is cool cause it can connect your DnDBeyond character sheet into it.
And also do lookups against DnDBeyond for things like spells, magic items, monsters
Hello
Im new also but it seems very hard to join a new game.
Like any social activity it takes time and effort. But a good D&D group is amazing.
I'll try and get more familiar with the bot.
We have #ddb-avrae-help if you run into any questions.
Thanks!
Is uhhh nsfw rp allowed?
That would be a discussion to have with your table and not a question that can be answered here
No NSFW content on this server. If you play with a group then follow their boundaries for what's acceptable in the game.
It's much better that you ask than that you make bad assumptions
Hi everyone I'm very new to D&D and my father is trying to get me into it I'm 100% down but have zero clue on how to play. I already made my character on dndbeyond just need some peeps to play with.

I have been playing for a while and I am ready to DM a game but I don't know how to start a campaign using D and D beyond
You can get tech support for D&D Beyond in #ddb-support.
I have a question about spell slots. If a level 1 Wizard has only 2 spell slots, then he can only cast 2 spells until he takes a rest and prepares more?
Yes but you can cast cantrips as many times as you like
I think they also get arcane recovery at level 1, so a short rest also let’s them recover some.
Ok, thank you.
Think of spell slots like currency. Part of the "cost" of casting a spell of a certain level is spending a spell slot of the same level or higher.
I wasn't able to make a campaign on dnd beyond with npcs. Nothing other than just the players character sheets, do you need a subscription for that?
D&D Beyond doesn't have tools for NPC creation (unless you count homebrewing statblocks). You can see what you get at the various subscription tiers here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/my-campaigns
You would have to homebrew monsters from scratch. Go to Collections > My Homebrew Creations > Create > Monsters
You can then use an existing monster statblock as a template, such as a Guard.
You regain your expended spell slots after a long rest
heyo, got a question about spellcasting to be exact i took shadow touched feat as rouge and for free 1 lvl spell i picked inflict wounds so i just wanted to know how to calculate hit...my WIS is -2 and since i dont have spellcasting proficiency my hit is -2? Am i getting it right ?
The ability you use is whichever you one you put the +1 in.
So you’d probably want to target whichever will get you the highest bonus.
Otherwise, yeah, your spell attack modifier would be your proficiency bonus - 2.
(So +0 at level one.)
got it thanks 🙂
A question I have is: do I need to have multiple character sheets both as a player and a dm??
You can't be a player and a DM at the same time so I don't quite understand
As DM you play everyone except the PCs.
No I'm not both but I play multiple dnd games some as dm and some as a player
You need to have a character sheet for all of the PCs you play as in other games, yes.
Oooh, I'm sorry
Pardon me. Then yes, you need a character sheet for your character and one for major NPCs too if you want though most NPCs use NPC-Monster statistics
you need a sheet for every PC you play and you need the statblocks of NPCs/Monsters
Only if they’re playing multiple characters. Generally it’s 1:1 tho.
Ah ok
One per player should be fine 🙂
I suggest using statblocks for NPCs instead of character sheets
NPCs are different as they don’t typically use character sheets. They use a much more condensed stat block.
nod typically no though I may occasionally use a regular character sheet for someone very significant
Ah alr, thanks for the info
So how exactly do I multi class?
when you level up, assuming you meet the stat requirement listed in the class, you simply take your next level as the first level of a new class, gaining that class's hp and special abilities essentially
Oh, thank you both
Is this the channel for newcomers?
So confused
yes, it is
Ah, perfect
First time players
Okay so me and 3 of my buddies are off to Paris within the next few weeks and the journey is gonna be 28 hours there and back so we're planning to play dnd as it's a hobby I've always wanted to try out and get into and it allows us to actually socialise (I've basically trapped them into doing it lmao). And we're planning to do the Lost Mines of Phandelver set campaign but none of us really know how to play the game, we've read over the rulebook roughly and I've also listened to about half the JRWI podcast just to get a feel for the way the storytelling works and I'm still unsure on how things work logistically.
Like can you do the campaign with a DM and 3 players or is that not enough and like what classes are recommended? Any and all advice is appreciated as after the trip to Paris, I'm planning on doing a whole homebrew campaign with its own unique world, mythos and everything. So thank you all and I hope you have a good night 🙂
The official modules, including LMoP, are optimized for parties of 4-7 players (add another for the DM), but you can absolutely play with 3 players. It just adds a layer of complication as there’s (likely) almost no redundancy with skills, abilities, and/or resource management.
I’m sure there must be party compositions that are tougher to get by with, but I suspect they’ll be fine with any classes chosen. If it were me, though, I’d probably opt for a martial class (fighter, rogue, or barbarian), a spellcaster of some kind who also has healing (cleric, druid, or bard), with the third slot being a bit of a wildcard. A paladin is nearly always a good pick to round out a party, and wizards have so many tools as their disposal. But spellcasting is a bit of a learning curve for newbs. It is doable, though.
lost mines is pretty difficult at the very start, especially for new players. i'd skip first level and then level to 3 when the book suggests, it doesn't unbalance the game that much but gives you a little bit extra hp to work with.
There’s also a whole channel for the module specifically in #1029833015423143957.
Yeah, I was gonna use the set classes, one of my friends has called being the DM this time, and one really wants to be the wizard, so I'll probably pick rogue and let my other buddy be a fighter or something
there is no healing in that party comp, one of you should make up a backup paladin or cleric sheet just in case
Hmm you're right, I'll probably pick the cleric, thanks
Remember that cleric doesn’t just heal. It’s honestly so overpowered you can make a party of entirely clerics
Three cleric run? Perhaps
The cleric has like… 12 official subclasses and only one is for healing
Clerics don’t heal, they keep the party from dying.
Yes there is a difference
Bro I hardly know anything about sub classes and stuff, but I have until about June/July to plan for all of this, you're honestly the most useful resource I have tbh, where did you learn all the information you know, and where do u even start since the actual game is so large itself when it comes down to classes and races alone
I just play a lot of west marches and DM’d a few times. I was where you were at like 8 years ago
Don’t worry about minmaxing races it honestly means total jack
Same stuff happened when I tried learning elderscrolls lore, just so much at once and no clue where to start, do u have any advice on where to start learning?
Just learn the rules first. The lore doesn’t matter at all because you can just retcon all of it
Yeah and it's mainly just about the fun of the players, rather than what goes on
Well and do what’s fun for you as well. Like I run scifi DnD cause that’s just what I like
But if you wanna dm the most important thing is learning the rules. Don’t have to memorize anything but learn enough to where you can run an encounter without having to flip through stuff
Yeah I love medieval stuff, way too much so it'll probably be that, no guns or stuff but mostly hand to hand epic brawls with greatswords, shields and pole axes
Most DM’s run it like that. My advice is if you wanna DM your main priority should be the rules. You’ll get more confident and a DM screen does help. You’ll reach a point where if you forget you can just straight up bs it without the players noticing
Yh I have the starter set which is why I'm gonna do phandelver
But then I'm gonna get the essentials kit for blank character sheets and the screen and stuff
Yeah I was just asking if it could logistically work with 3ppl
hello
DoIP?
Ohh yhyh, I'm probably gonna work it into my homebrew eventually but I don't have the finances for it at this moment in time
I just wanna do lost mines so I know how a game plays out in person rather than just on a podcast before I actually DM on my homebrew
Man my first module was rime of the frostmaiden. Good times
question
where do i even go to make char sheets and all of that??? i’ve never actually played dnd before
sorry to interrupt the convo you have going on already
not yet but i will now
Icespire?
alr, just did

Should be plenty in #looking-for-players have fun
I’m interested
I'm trying to find a nice beginner friendly campaign. I've never played before and I might need a bit of coaching.
Alright it sounds like you guys are all looking for a group, want me to help you make a group together?
Players would be watermelon, Shoji, and Reivax.
Yea, that'd be tight
I copped the starter kit and I’ve been reading the rule book
Yes
I think I have a …. Decent? Grasp on how to play but I just might need clarification on a few things here and there
Awesome I'll get you guys set up. Moving to dms
Ok
👍
So how do even start a campaign
I’m looking to join one but still want to know the process

Would it be possible for there to be a life domain cleric that's NE?
Nothing in the rules prevents it. How much you need to justify it story-wise will depend on your DM and your group and how much you care about such things. Some groups place a high priority on stuff like that, some groups don't care, and there are groups everywhere in between.
ask yourself (or your player) why would a life domain cleric be evil? I guess there could be a reason, but any example escapes me. the real issue is how does this fit with the party and your group in general and their goals?
I can help answer this.
There's a god of life that can have evil worshipers in the Wednesday game I'm running. His evil worshipers are the ones seeking to create new, hideous, and monstrous forms of life, or who spread and cultivate diseases or parasites
im such a concrete thinker :/ 😄
but.... is that just a way to rationalize having a healer in an evil murderhobo party?
I mean not really, it's thematic for the world in that case. The gods are all more conceptual. 'Life', 'Strength', 'Competence', 'Death', 'Magic', 'Light/Darkness'. The gods don't have names, they're facets of the universe. Each of them has a good side and an evil side.
Besides...really...a player shouldn't have to justify what they play in my opinion, beyond of course fulfilling the DM's expectations for the campaign. If the DM is accepting evil characters and life clerics then an evil life cleric should be allowable.
I agree, about characters developing their own character and story how tehy want (i just kind of feel it should all be internally consistent, whatever the details are)
but on the note of gods, the old AD&D (1e) had a really cool book Deities and Demigods. is there a similar source for 5e? I havent really looked for it, but this conversation just reminded me.
Does character alignment affect the stats of that character?
No
Good to know
a cleric or other spellcaster that uses divine magic, who violates their alignment, may be punished by their god(dess) including removing ability to cast spells.
I mean...evil people can be healers if they wish to be. If they think it will get them closer to their overall goal. Lawful Evil could definitely take that path, working as part of a unit and providing a useful service to their allies so that they can reach their endgame.
Character alignment does very little in 5e. Occasionally a spell or other magical effect might be affected by it but mainly it's there as a throwback to older editions when it was a bigger thing.
but yeah, its mostly character backstory and motivations that add to the roleplaying. and maybe drive adventures or the larger campaign
(Take this with a grain of salt…I’m super new too!)
Neutral evil seems to be like pure pragmatism, caring about yourself regardless of morals, but not trying to stir S* up for the chaotic bent. Life itself is indifferent to morals. Predators kill because they need to eat and reproduce.
A neutral evil follows rules because it keeps them alive, as does all life really…
So it may be a stretch, but I feel like a neutral evil life cleric could exist, but would be an extreme Darwinian view of life, I guess🙃.
That’s my way of trying to justify it if you want to do it!
You could say that Promoting life doesn’t mean that nothing does; it means that life itself continues its cycle, maybe?
Sorry to kinda barge in but speaking of healers..
I recently made a character who honestly I think I messed up on or didn't fully understand it all.
She's a Dragonborn Cleric Blood Hunter. 😅
Neutral evil is a fun alignment to try to play out because, yeah, it's pure opportunism. The rules are a tool to exploit or abandon as you see fit.
I always thought Dr. Girlfriend from The Venture Brothers was a fun example of neutral evil. She had the ability to rules lawyer other supervillains into helping her achieve her goals. But she didn't particularly respect or believe in the rules. Just her husband and the other people she cared about.
the Galactic Empire was supposedly evil, but on the other hand all those Death Stars created a lot of high paying skilled and tech jobs, improved the economy, and otherwise contributed to quality of life.
“Death stars”, psh. More like moons of order.
thats no moon
(That would make Phantom Limb Lawful Evil and The Monarch CE, I think... Man I suddenly want to make one of those old 2000s-era alignment memes)
Honestly, rusty venture is neutral evil.
You think he cares about the general hood outside of himself?
*good
He does try to grow and change. But he's pretty selfish and awful overall.
Is anyone able to help me? I wish to make a Dragonborn Healer but I honestly have no idea where to start.
My DM isn't the super best either, and he's about to sleep
hey guys new player here looking to learn how to dnd if anyone is doing a game sometime soon or tomorrow
Pure Neutral Evil here, folks:
"LIFE, which you so nobly serve, comes from destruction, disorder and chaos."
"you're a monster, Zorg"
"I know"
Paladins, clerics, and to an extent druids are all good healers. Paladins get Lay on Hands so they can heal and still be powerful frontline fighters, while life domain clerics output massive quantities of HP restoration and twilight clerics can create very handy "shields" of temporary extra HP
Life cleric is the easiest and the most healing. But you have a few options. And dragonborn can suit any of those
Well we already have a Paladin so I'm trying to not do that
Guess Cleric it is then
Bards have some healing, probably about as much as a Druid. tehy can be fun to play if you're into role playing and support roles.
dragonborns make excellent bards
Sadly there's not a lot of Role-playing in the group I'm currently in
I tried to find a new group to join, but no luck so far
well, they give a lot of buffs and have some fun skills.
otoh war clerics get all the healing stuff, and you can be something of a tank.
...
but before you decline bards, check this out:
https://www.thegamer.com/make-overpowered-bard-dungeons-dragons/
Well in the Campaign I'm in, turns out the Dragonsborns are on their last numbers (from what I got told) so My Character was supposed to be a Royal Guard Healer who fought along side the toughest Dragonborn warriors and helped them return home.
My Character was supposed to be a Royal Guard Healer
supposed to? your DM tells you what to be? yuck.
No no that's not what I meant.
oh okay sorry lol that startled me
If he tried to tell me what to be I never would've joined him
sorry i totally misread that.
what level are you starting at? you could maybe multiclass if its at least lvl 4 or lvl 5
Party is at Lvl 8
well, multiclass is definitely an option then.
As I mentioned above, she's currently a Cleric/Blood Hunter. However she is not in the story yet so I'm able to change stuff still
well, i mean that sounds cool, but it doesnt really take advantage of your Dragonborn's charisma bonus. Im kind of an optimizer, so id really look at that CHA
Bard/Sorcerer would be pretty awesome, both are CHA based.
im not telling you what to do im just rambling. and you asked lol 🙂
Alright, I’m still waiting for the time to play my first dnd game but hear me out.
You’re a healer…but that doesn’t mean you have to optimize the healing…maybe just be a better version of it.
you said cleric, right? Order cleric from Tasha’s has “voice of authority”:
“If you cast a spell with a spell slot of 1st level or higher and target an ally with the spell, that ally can use their reaction immediately after the spell to make one weapon attack against a creature of your choice that you can see.”
…so you could heal often. Cure wounds, healing word, wherever. But you could have that be combat effective in giving Allies attacks they may not normally have had.
So you’re a healer in that you heal often…because it still also results in damage
Seems interesting
Dragonborn and Healing is a brand new concept to me, that's why I'm asking for all this amazing help. 😅
I usually run High Elf Rogue or Ranger
I usually run nothing! So take my advice with a grain of salt!
I have a toddler and my wife falls asleep early, so I bought the PHB, Xanatahars, Tasha’s, and monsters of multiverse and have been reading before I try joining a local adventurers league night
Hi, i am a new dm, and how can i find some list of items that i can handle out as rewards to low level?
I sadly have nothing bought for DnD, I'm just going off whatever is free.
I did the same forever (I don’t think we’re allowed to say where). I eventually liked having the dndbeyond app on my phone and caved and spent a not-nothing sum of money for 4 books worth.
Plus subscription because I am obsessed with theorycrafting a million characters
you're fixed on being a dragonborn, yeah, so i would say you should optimize that CHA dragonborns get, along with STR. otherwise you're leaving points on teh table.
this means Dragonborns are best playing Barbarians, Bards, Fighters, Paladins, Sorcerers, and Warlocks.
in that list, Bards have healing.
given your constraints and preferences, I would multiclass Bard with either Barbarian or one of the casters.
The DMG has magical items and such. At low level scrolls, potions, and money are the most common rewards
in the DMG magic item list ... for low level characters, you would likely want to limit them to only the "uncommon" ones.
If that. Honestly even some of those can be a bit much
and be aware that giving out too many magic items early on, is counterproductive.
A Barbarian Bard sounds kinda cool
true, i'd limit the uncommon items to just a few of the less powerful ones
You could even use the list from the players guide for adventurers league too. If it’s good enough for a level 5 character, I assume it’s ok for your question?
• +1 weapon
• +1 shield
• +1 rod of the pact keeper
• +1 wand of the war mage
• +1 all-purpose tool (TCE)
• +1 amulet of the devout (TCE) • +1 arcane grimoire (TCE)
• +1 bloodwell vial (TCE)
• +1 dragonhide belt (FTD)
• +1 moon sickle (TCE)
• +1 rhythm-maker’s drum (TCE) • Bag of holding
Amazing concept, difficult execution. Bardbarian ain’t easy with the lack of in-rage spell casting
a lot of those are IMO too powerful for low characters. theres a huge diff between lvl 5 and lvl 1 or 2
True. Wasn’t sure what they considered low level
Gah, sorry for all the typos…literally a car drove over my phone today
ouch
👍
Magic items all have a rarity assigned to them, items with a rarity of Common or Uncommon is a good place to start.
@median haven keep low level players' magic items at the lower end
heres a recommended list to choose from i borrowed from another DM that tehy use to guide
+1 weapon
+1 shield,
cloak of protection (maybe)
goggles of nightvision,
bag of holding,
wand of secrets,
wand of magic detection,
efficient quiver
What about melee weapons and bows?
+1/2/3 weapons and armor are included in the Magic Item list in the Dungeon Masters Guide
simple +1 weapons (without extra powers) are in the uncommon list and thus appropriate for lvl 1-5
IMO
Yes.
Alrighty, thanks for help yall👍
The section of the DMG for Magic Items has a handy table of the different rarities and what levels are appropriate for them to be appearing in treasure hauls
bardbarians are awesome muiticlass. the lack of in-rage casting is not very relevant, you're not running around in rage all the time anyhow, rage is limited.
level 2 barbarian gives you all the basic barbarian advantages,... then putting your bard at lvl 6 with College of Lore gets you 11 spell slots, a few 3rd level spells which can be pretty powerful, and countercharm which can be very useful in some situations.
Oo ok
Again that's all new to me, I'm used to walking around and messing up beasts with
Beasts Mark and using my +3 Longbow. 😂
bard has cure wounds, healing word, and greater restoration, so basically you can be pretty much a cleric at least for general healing.
anyhow, i'll stop fanboying on bardbarians now
Just be sure you rage during any performance. Otherwise what kind of bardbarian are you? 🙄
Go metal or go home
thats a hilarious image
I’m actually a huge metalhead. So I’m joking…but not really
I’m almost 40. Im…middle-ish?
I know the older Kevin smith movies well!
So, my concept I’m playing with for my first game: Spring Eladrin Paladin of glory. Really he is a method actor REALLY getting into his role to create a more enriching story for an archfey, compared to his rival (a conquest Paladin of summer)”. The material plane is their stage.
His strong emotions and method acting allow him to tap into the Paladin oath power (his emotional commitment to the oath for his role is that strong!) , but really it’s all one big show to him, and one-upping his rival is the primary motivation.
He scoffs at courses of action that “don’t make good plot hooks” or “wouldn’t wow an audience”.
The thing is that the “game” or “play” really is life or death. Because what other stakes could be more dramatic and fascinating!
I wanted to play a one player campagne with a friend who never played PnP before and i would be the first time a DM.
The campagne is homebrew, the rules would be a twist between pathfinder (most of the time for fight), dnd and homebrew
Any advice for me?
Yeah, they're two different systems then on top of that you have homebrew stuff? That's going to be a mess to keep track of.
Ok👍
Then we go with the homebrew
I'm all for it. One Game To Rule Us All
How many active npc's do i need for only one player?
What is the best way to find games on discord? I am new to DND and I am in a face-to-face campaign but would like to play different games as different classes to learn them?
I have tried the forums on DND beyond but the DMS there seem to not want to help the new guys
What do you mean by 'active NPCs'?
Check out our game finding channels, we have information on how to use them over in #find-a-game
Npc's that help the player (supporter or "Questmaster"(who help you for one quest))
Passive NPC's (for my understanding) are 2 sentence npc's
I think you might be trying to over think things
Generally you drop NPCs in as needed, to either fill out a scene or otherwise interact with the PCs
Yeah, i over think to much
But i just wanted to have some NPC's on my hand
Are 15 to much?
It really depends on how you plan on using them - like if this is a well developed city/town 15 developed NPCs could be perfect. But if it’s a small hunters cabin in the mountains on the way to the adventure location then 15 may be too much.
It just depends on how you’re using them and what kind of story/game you’re trying to run.
D&D is not a game of hard answers
There isn't a 'right number' of NPCs or the correct type of monster
DMing is a mix of creative writing, improv, performance, and game design. All of these things have a lack of hard and fast rules and have a heavy basis in doing what works for you and your audience, in terms of taste and preferred methods of doing things
I understand all of this but i would be glad for a round about number 🙂
How many NPC's do you think your player is going to interact with?
Because thats the number you need.
And maybe some spares just in case.
I generally don’t enjoy talking with myself, so I’ll try to only have one NPC in a given scene, two at most, and three is right out.
So you only have 1 other person in the room with the PC's at any one time?
or you just dont "voice/act out" other NPC's whilst PC's are engaging with another NPC?
The latter, generally.
Fair, I tend not to do a "voice" when its multiple NPC's because they begin to blend, and go more 3rd party.
I can code-switch to different voices and personalities fairly reliably, but it gets really hard going from NPC to NPC. I’ll generally leave room for the PCs to speak or react while I get the voice for the other NPC ready.
Thanks a lot for the support
I will try 3 NPC's (round about) with 3 voices for one player 🙂
What a nice supportive community
I’ve caught myself switchin from Scottish to Australian to Irish to Jamaican.
Once ya get goin it’s hard to switch back lol.

For what type character do you use Jamaican?
I’m saying I accidentally slip when using my accents.
Then they all reform back to a Jamaican accent
Appalachian always dips back in to southern for me since they’re so closely related.
If they also switch in theie behavior than I want to join your campagne
My players sensed the change of accents that I messed up on.
So I had them roll insight and they figured he was Scitzofranic lol
What combat options and tactics do I have access to as a 1st level rogue?
Like class features?
that and anything else
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/rogue
Read that. Anything else varies by DM
Any good ways to get advantage?
Im abbout to play in my first campaign in a few days. Anyone have any tips?
tbh just have fun, you will be a dm or player?
player
Is combat very hard?
Know your abilities but It’s all upto the dice at the end of the day
Alright! Thanks!
https://youtu.be/qmABhOgcEnQ how to avoid bad role playing
Loads of good videos on that channel for newcomers
btw where can i find some decent free minis for printing?
Thingiverse!
There’s a notable member of the 3D printing community by the name of MZ4250. He’s produced STL files of all of the monsters and many different kinds of adventurers. He’s also released them for anyone to print completely free.
- Don't hog the spotlight. Give your fellow players time to shine. Involve them directly if you think they'd be open to it.
- Take an interest in other people's stories and choices; don't tune out when the session focuses on someone else.
- Know how your abilities/features work. On a similar note, don't take forever on your turn.
- Take NOTES.
- Listen to everyone else and try not to interrupt.
- Thank the DM. Seriously, this goes a long way.
- Communicate. The game relies on it, and that goes for out-of-game stuff as well as in-game. In particular, communicate about everyone's expectations so that everyone has a good time.
So as a completely new player who only really knows DnD through things like Critical Role and Dimension 20;
What would a complete noob be expected to provide on their first game in person?
Don't want to break the bank on something that might not be for me
Iamrazorwing has some good advice above
ON general behavior, that is. Just try to learn at least the basics of what your character can do and maybe the combat rules, and be willing to listen to others.
Yeah I'd probably have the player handbook with me on my phone to help me along.
More thinking in terms of mini's, dice and other assorted things?
Pretty sure most newbie friendly groups wouldn't ask noobs to bring all that but obviously a lot of you guys have a lot more experience in that
Sweet, cheers for the help
i wouldn't even expect a brand new player to have the PHB. in person they can borrow a physical phb or use the basic rules on dnd beyond
Generally none unless you use Vuman/CL to make a busted build
It's better to use the second method of getting sneak attack
Which is being near your party members and ganging up on one creature
You only have access to good ways to get advantage at level 2 with cunning action
and level 3 with steady aim
It's very dependent on the DM
Some DMs are gentle with their players and only do encounters that have a very low chance of death
In general your DM should see the power level of your party and adjust accordingly
If everyone is pretty poorly optimized they won't throw a CR 3 monster at you immediately
You should remember your abilities though
A Barbarian that doesn't rage or a Wizard that doesn't cast spells would not do well in combat
this is the main thing, you should make sure to double check your options on other players turns in combat. just make sure to keep paying attention as well.
It’s best to believe the monsters know what they’re doing
Yeah
Nobody likes a DM that's like "you guys are fighting an ANCIENT RED DRAGON at level 3!111!" only to have it act as if it has -20 in INT to avoid a TPK
Most DMs I know would not hesitate to use the strongest aspect of their monster so be prepared when that happens
The DM might not mean to punish you but the dice might have other ideas…
for my first campaign we had a few sessions and not ONCE did we ever win an encounter
so i took the campaign less seriously and tried to have fun by messing around since he didn't want us winning and I got kicked out
Rip. Combat should be hard but not unwinnable imho
So every encounter was a TPK?
nearly
A little bit harder enemy, they will have fun...
3 times crit from the enemy...
If the dice decide you have to die, you die
Where?
So I'm new to dnd, I'm mean vanilla new
I got a beginner set
Ya I want to but I'm wanting to be a player the dm doesn't excite me

I created my first character, can someone check if it is a good start for me please?
Looks ok now go pick your spells
i thought level 1 i dont get to pick spells
I also switch your con and int scores to give 16 in both
Ty so much
Wizards get casting at lvl 1
I was told people changed from 5E to pf2 what do they mean?
This was right before the campaign started and said character wouldn’t work
What why would they go e5 then change to something else
I just started learning e5 now I’ve to learn a whole different game?
Folks are still playing 5e. If you need to find a group who does, they are legion.
I’m just super confused why they’d change it right before campaign starts
Oof everything about character sheets are just reworded D&D stuff
I was just wondering about ranger
Like overall how unoptimised is ranger
(Yes I'm taking it from the perspective of actual playability not how much damage they can do)
If you’re going to play the PHB ranger, I’d suggest talking with your DM. There’s a few class choices that kind of depend on the campaign if you want to get the most out of them.
Alternatively, if you have Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything, there’s a few optional class features that can replace those. They’re a little more broadly useful. (But you’d probably still want to check with your DM before going that route either.)
All that said: it’s a fun class, and if that’s what you’re interested in, go for it. 👍🏻
out of curiosity, do more people use roll20 or dnd beyond for games? ive been using roll20 to setup my character, but im tempted to buy some of the books from DnDB, but... not sure how worth it that is if i wont be playing on DnDB very much.
Roll 20 allows you to actually play. DDB can only keep track of a character sheet if you have all the books bought on there.
aaaaah i gotcha, ty.
i kind of like how easy dndb makes the character creation, but... its fairly limited without spending $$$. guess i got a decision to make lol
yeh i have 0 books lol. just been using various online resources to make the character and stuff
Once you know how to make a character on your own, I'd just keep the characters in Roll20, it automates a lot of things and makes it easy.
yeh, the guy thats been helping me out advised i go the roll20 route cause he also said it's a lot easier lol
and aaah thats pretty cool. good to know ty
i did hear someone mention foundry. Im honestly tempted to do the creation on dndb and then just transfer it over to roll20, just because it kind of makes it really easy lol
ill figure it out ig xD
Cool thing is, there are methods to import D&D Beyond into Roll20 and Foundry so D&D Beyond would be my recommendation
Use the revised ranger
i- i'm new to all of this- can- someone like - give me a quick rundown over DMs how it works- (only has physical dice sets and heard this was cool.)

Huh, thats a lot of reading.
A light evening glance through the free basic rules will more than get you hooked on wanting to read every single thing on that list.
Just concentrate on the first four chapters on character creation.
when creating backstories, do i need to adhere to particular elements of lore within the DnD universe? or am i kinda free to create a story as i please?
dang
so do you basically need a dnd group b4 creating a character? cause like what happens if u go through all this effort to make a character and then u find a game and DM is like "hah, nah"? lolol
i gotcha i gotcha
I made like ~24 characters and only played about 4 of them, building characters can be fun too, and another great way to learn more about classes, races or features you haven't read about before.
So any advice for finding local game new to dnd. Tried two game stores neither had games scheduled. Thought try here from California. Never played before but bought phb set dice and a dwarf mini. Could play online but figured in person be easier to learn. Made some characters on dnd beyond and set a Roll20 account. Am I missing anything?
If you decide to look for online games, you have lots of choices, but you become one of many in the same boat. Which translates into luck, patience, and persistence.
For in-person, you might try WotC’s locator. https://locator.wizards.com/# Also see if libraries or any community centers host D&D. You might also get lucky with local groups through Facebook or MeetUp.
If you have facebook and live in a relatively large town, you'll find a local community that plays these games there
Thanks for tip trying that link
Found one out of my town but only 30min away actually has a game tomorrow night for beginners thanks again
That’s awesome. Hope you have a good time.
Me too it’s a one shot and for $10 but seems perfect to learn on

Would there be a difference to rolls if my wizard were to cast spells with his hands instead of a staff or smth
A staff/wand is only needed to fullfill the material component part of a spell. You can cast spells equally good with or without it unless its a focus that gives a bonus like a wand of the warmage or a rod of the pactkeeper kind of deal
The only thing a staff does is substitute for the material components a spell has. You could also use a spell component pouch which is assumed to have infinite bone dust/tiny rocks/whatever worthless bits a spell asks for

Can someone please explain to me how the initiative and the action order functions? i never played it, and i just got to the combat section of the rule book
oh, and, it seems pretty difficult to play without a map, can i make my own map? (copied from the booklet that the started set came with)
like the movement, i think it will be chaos, knowing that everybody is first timers
in which order we attack/do an action
Everyone rolls a Dexterity check, and you write out everyone in the combat in order of how high each check result was. That's the order each character's turn goes in, starting with whoever rolled highest.
You're welcome!
Also: you're encouraged to use premade maps or make your own
Printing off, copying, using a dry erase board, whatever works best for you
I would go bigger than A4 for combat encounter maps. One square = 1 inch, usually, to account for the typical scale of D&D miniatures, and a typical character can run 6 squares in a turn without using any extra resources to increase movement
If you're looking for paper, see if you can get paper with those squares printed on
Wrapping paper is a good one
Erasable boards with grids are also a good investment
prolly will get a whiteboard in the future if i gather a team to play with consistenly
btw, are npc and monster cards worth?
for now i think i will use some big baking sheets, cause here in romania he have some big white paper things, and i think it will work perfectly
Cards are convenient as a quick reference, but I've always gotten by just fine with either the book or the relevant rules info open on a digital client. So, up to you.
Baking paper sounds good, especially if it has grid lines.
unfortunately, it doesent have them, but i can make them pretty easily
Wrapping paper sometimes has a grid on the back
Hey uh lmk if this is an odd question but, is tutoring in dnd a thing at all? Like learning the game through someone else. I really wanna read the books and everything but I'm afraid I wouldn't be consistent enough. So having someone else (preferably around the same age as me) make sure I am would be nice ;u;
Do you have a local game store near you?
Not really no. I live in semi rural Queensland lol
Ok so nerd culture near you maybe a long shot then, YouTube is a good source for learning the game dungeon dudes have loads of guides and their live plays are easy to get into
Ahh thank you for the suggestions. But I swear my adhd sabotages me when I try learning anything 😭 And the only real way that can be helped is through someone else being there and either doing the same or a similar task
Also I just don't really have anyone to talk to ab dnd lol so that would be nice too
Watch Critical Role's Handbooker Helper tutorial videos on Youtube at your own pace.
There are a lot of new players every day so it's not feasible to give everyone private tutoring
Hi! Im boris and im new to DND, and would like to learn some more abt DND,if anyone is willing to help that would be great:)

one thing im going to say is that barbarians main ability score is strength so your strength ability score needs to be the highest
then also in your inventory click items so you are going to add stuff then click on starting equipment
Yo can someone explain how paldin spells work my freind sent me a list of spells and I have no clue how they work
or what they do
paladin spells are not fundamentally different from other classes spells.
i dont know how any spells work
this is my first time playing ever
no they didnt send me any

okay this is alot and alot of reading isnt it
I tried to link the most relevant parts regarding your question but you should generally be familiar with the first 4 chapters of the basic rules
if you struggle with the reading then I also recommend the handbooker helper series on youtube
handbooker does he start at the very basics and the more in depth
is there a playlist of sorts
okay thanks
Can a tiefling be the size of a goblin?
Technically, they're side Medium(roughly human size), but in the One D&D playtest(rough drafts for the next revision of the rules), Tieflings can be either Medium or Small(halfling/goblin/gnome/etc size).
Thanks
Even tho i read and read about how spells, spell slots, spell books, etc, but i still can't understand how they function, and that kinda embarrases me as someone who wants to be a DM, could someone give me a direct explanation?
Yes
Rephrasing, i get that depending on the class you use a different modifier, but appart from that don't get for example how spell slots work
And what's the difference with a spellbook
Check out Handbooker Helper's tutorial video on spellcasting:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i9ZnlZ7VudM
Do i always need to have a spell book as obligation?
That's only for wizards.
But it's not like i don't understand a sentence, i don't the whole mechanic of spell slots at all
And how do i get new lvl of spells
When your character levels up in a spellcasting class.
Again, check out the video I linked above.
Alright
I hope it solves all my questions
Just gonna add, maybe if i ask on a server is because i already looked for videos, as on a video i can't clear specific doubts
When you’ve been here a while, you realize that not everyone takes the time to find the answers. It’s so often the case that we link an answer that was in the rules or otherwise easily Googleable to solve it. So folks err on the side of caution in that regard.
Still, thanks dun for asking me to be specific
D&D can be very rules intensive and the more veteran players here are willing to help but it would help us to get more details of the issue(s) at hand.
I mean, at some point i started making some more specific questions
alright
so, i think that NOW i kinda understand it
for example with a druid, from the spells that i have available for lvl 1 druid, then with my wisdom modifier + my druid's level i choose from that list of spells and then those are my prepared spells
is that correct?
Yes
yaaaay
so, the way i use it is that i always have that spells there, but with my spell slots, if i cast something, if i have for example 3, after casting i have 2, and when i get new lvl spell slots and new lvl of spells i can make a new list of prepared spells for that level
is that correct?
Prepared casters let you change your spells on a long rest. But you do get more slots as you level up.
but wait
when i combine my druid's lvl + it's spell modifier, the result i get is for spells of all lvls combined or is it one "lvl + modifier" per level of spells?
Say you have a +3 at level 1. That’s 4 spells in total. It’s across all spell levels you have access to. So if you can prep ten spells, that’s for all levels you can prep spells at.
At level 1, no. You don’t get access to level 2 spells until level 3 as a druid (for example).
But otherwise? Sure.
The charts included with your class description contain much of this info. You’ll refer to them when making a character and any time you level up.
Sup peeps. I’m looking at a goblin stat block and notice (2d6) next to it’s hit points. What does this mean?

Awesome, thanks for confirming .
assuming on any stat, a number before the bracketed dice roll is the average ?
Yeah thanks
Cool! 👍
D&D beyond says I can choose a dragon ancestry as a tiefling
Does it matter which one?
Are you referring to the sorcerer origin? Tieflings don't have draconic ancestry but rather they have fiendish ancestry.
Sorcerer class...?
You can link the url here
I want divine soul sorcerer but seems they locked players behind pay walls
The draconic bloodline is a sorcerous origin, not specifically tiefling.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/classes#DraconicBloodline
FWIW, you can buy a subclass by itself instead of the whole book.
Which is very stupid honestly you think they’d lose more money then make my friend said pc version doesn’t have those books locked
Mobile doesn’t allow it
That link doesn’t load on the app
You can’t purchase the standalone items directly in the mobile app, no, but you can buy them on the website for use in the app.
You need to go to the D&D Beyond website to access the Marketplace in order to buy the individual playable races/sub-classes.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/marketplace
There is no "PC" version, unless you're talking about one of the video games.
G sheet has it on there for free and g sheet was promoted by D&D idk why they’d want them to pay for subclasses
I have no idea what "G sheet" is...
Wizards doesn't release content on G Sheets, sounds like something someone created themselves using the purchased books. Which they'
they're not supposed to do
The D&D bot made by D&D beyond can link g sheet characters it was made for it it’s allowed
Anyway... again, you can buy the individual playable races/classes on D&D Beyond website for about $2/$3 each.
Well knowing this that’s one down right scam honestly
It's not a charity. If you want their product, buy it.
It’s free by the same people on a different type of sheet
Because they're distributing unauthorized copies, aka theft
You're diving into 🏴☠️ territory...
But they didn't release their content on g sheets
Remember that this is the official WotC D&D Discord server and there are certain rules...
Apparently they did it’s on options there
Yes and they made this to
I thought y’all would know more about this
sigh MAYBE the bot can read from a g sheet. But those would be g sheets created by players so that there's a digital copy of their character for the bot to read from. Wizards does NOT give away their content on g sheets, and the only content available for free is what's in the Basic Rules.
I'm out of this conversation....
Yeah, it's like talking to a wall
It’s a clean g sheet it just shows up as options
No just not listening and answer appropriately
Well if y’all don’t know don’t say anything bye
I said it’s a clean sheet so no pre player information from anyone
Does anyone want to play dnd
I’m new I don’t even know what books are what all I know it’s a clean sheet no payed for information is already there for free
I didn’t get it from anyone

Seen that before
Doesn’t give any information about this
Well you don’t listen like talking to a wall goodbye
Nah, the Avrae GSheet is definitely legit.
https://gsheet2.avrae.io/
But the key difference is that while you can select any subclass, it doesn’t include the actual rules for that subclass.
The one on D&D Beyond does.
(And in order to use any of the official automation for it in Avrae, you actually will need access to it in DDB.)
But I don’t own those and still gives me the options and it’s not a past player used sheet
I’ve no idea how to use g sheet and what I’m doing stuff is just there
hello everyone
Right, but it doesn’t actually tell you what the subclass does or give you anything to make it playable.
Which is why it’s “free”.
All you’re really getting is the name.
Definitely not pirated content, though.
Oh
Man the sheet is confusing
Thank god I don’t need to fill it out
Oh right, I’m a dm
Welcome to the server and the game
