Second question can someone multiclass a subclass cus i don't see any rule saying i cant nor can
Not in the rules as they are written. To do something like that you could talk with your DM. Might involve a quest to locate a skilled blacksmith able to create such a masterful weapon
And you can't multclass into subclasses, such as taking the kensai subclass feature at level 3, and the way of mercy subclass feature at level 7. You pick your subclass (for monk) at level 3 and must take the subclass features assigned to that subclass at the assigned levels
Ok third question can an astral self monk hold things with their spectral hands
It's not entirely clear. The rules don't say that you can use the arms to make object interactions but depending on the flavor it could make sense to be able to do so.
I would ask your DM if they are ok with you using the astral arms to pick things up, grapple and/or wield weapons
Ok also can i be a half elf half orc and how would it work do i get both ais and traits or do i pick one ?
Oh nvm its a race of its own
You could take the Custom Lineage race from TCoE (if you have that sourcebook) and customise it as you see fit. If I were to do it I would choose:
Humanoid
Medium
ASI: Whatever you need for your class
Feat: Fey Touched, Tough, Durable or Mage Initiate (Wizard) to reflect either your orcish or elvish heritage
Variable Trait: Darkvision (both elves and orcs have darkvision)
Language: Common + Elvish (Take Orcish via your background language proficiency)
Otherwise, you could play a half-elf or half-orc and flavor your appearance with elvish and orcish traits such as pointed ears, tusks and/or greyish/greenish skin
Howdy, i'm a bit confused on playing a Rogue Swashbuckler and combat with duel weapons. Can you do two attacks as your action, or is it one attack and one bonus action to do the second strike?
you can use your bonus action to attack with a light one handed melee weapon
You don't add your ability modifier to the damage of the bonus attack, unless that modifier is negative
Just adding onto what Archonin has said because they've pretty much nailed it, if you want to attack with your bonus action, both your main and off weapons must be light
oh! actually learned something
Alrighty, ty! What about using Cunning action after a second strike, or can you not do that since you used a bonus action? ```Cunning ActionPHB, pg. 96
You can take a bonus action on each of your turns to take the Dash, Disengage, or Hide action.```
Thats right, if you use your bonus action on two-weapon fighting, you no longer have a bonus action for your cunning action
OK, cool then I can strike ones and flee, or strike twice. ty wanted to be sure I understood those basics
Quastion if i multiclass fighter and monk and i use the battle masters parry can i choose to deflect the melee attack to hit him back
It definitely sounds cool. But I'm pretty sure that it wouldn't synergize since the monk's deflect missiles is limited to ranged weapon attacks.
Oof
Gday. new to the dnd discord hope everyones having a killa day
i know how to play generally but im having trouble finding a group of people, also i have no idea if i wanna be a player or a dungeon master is there a simple way to figure that out or do i just gotta try both
nothing stopping you from being both, its always good to vary your experience. If you are looking to stick to one, I'd recommend playing for a bit and understanding how the game runs and then try dming
I have the same problem with finding people to play with but as for your question. I'd agree with Mini. Although I've only been playing for 3 years so still a baby
3 years is a baby???
Hello, I am very new to DND. I started playing about a month ago and love it. I was wondering where I can find somewhere to play with people online that is okay with new player?

You the DM?
No, we’re kinda looking for one but we wanna look at possible oneshot/campaign options
Lost Mines of Phandelver is a great starter. It’s free, easy to run, and designed for new players.
As far as finding a DM goes they tend to be rare and are often looking for one or two players for their game rather than an existing group to join. It’ll be considerably faster if someone in your group takes on the role and plays as the DM.
we’re not a full group yet but thank you for the advice!!
I did it. I put my first thing in looking for games. So anyone wanting another player or looking to make a group. Hi
thx
play in
I am joining my first campaign soon and want to play a stealth/healer role or a tank/healer role. Using the cleric class with either an elf or dwarf any advice???
Trickster cleric for stealth, you’ll have more luck discussing builds in #1045166392174972938
Ahh Thankyou

Also an absolute baby around here. I haven't personally played in years, and never in an online format, so I'm no help but definitely walking the same path. I'm a quick learner, but definitely looking for people to help me get going

It's been hard to even navigate designing a proper character, but also(and it seems to be the general problem everyone is having,) finding campaigns that are willing to take on inexperienced players
Fair I can't say how difficult it is because I mostly DM but my first time finding a campaign to play in was difficult because many people are cautious about new players
Which of course is fair, it's hard to run a smooth campaign and get a decent flow going I'm sure with a new comer who doesn't know the logistics of how to play through a scenario. I think that's the biggest apprehension I've had with trying to get involved again in DND, I find it difficult to be the one ruining it for others while I try and wrap my head around what I should be doing. The roleplay comes naturally, and was honestly the primary focus back in the day, but re-gaining the knowledge of how/when/what to be doing makes it tricky to get back in... Especially being someone who finds it difficult to retain info from written word(the handbook and new players guides and whatnot.)
Yeah I get that you just need to find someone who is willing to help you that is what I did when I was new but finding someone like that is difficult
Thus leading me to where a guide can be found for nearly all things these days..Discord 😆
How do I put in a submission for lf dm
This is where your journey begins to find the great wise one to teach you the rules
A wonderous(and agonizing) journey, hopefully they are waiting closer than I expect.
The great wise rule wizard master of all DND rules and regulations
You must journey to the highest peak in the realm to find him (or your local DND server)
Why is there a meme that warlocks always take rests?
Their spell slots recharge on a Short Rest(1 hour) instead of a Long Rest(a night's sleep). So while Warlocks don't have as many spell slots available to them as a fully-stocked Wizard/Cleric/etc, give them an hour's downtime and they're back up to 100% magic.
That seems op
Guys can you suggest me a class that can carry and do most of damage ?

can a rapier be used with a shield?
Sure.
People used to fight with rapiers and bucklers (a small shield about the size of a dinner plate).
a rapier is a finesse weapon meaning it can be used as a STR based or a DEX based melee weapon. they're always one-handed, so yes you can use a shield in off-hand.
you may have been thinking of "versatile" weapons, which can be either one-handed or two-handed for more damage. using versatile weapons two-handed would prevent the use of a shield
anyone know of an online avatar generater for aarakocra or birdfolk?
Can I play dnd with people here on the dnd discord server on the server itself or is this just a dnd chat? (I'm really new)
Good morning all.
Can someone please explain this to me like in 5…… time mechanics and how rests are carried out during campaigns.
What do you mean by time mechanics?
You can find games here, but generally people play on their own servers

Just in general how does time pass in a campaign, if a long rest is 8 hours, is this real hours or “in game” hours and if the latter how is time tracked
Hero forge might be useful 😊
And as for how it's tracked, that varies from DM to DM. Some DMs track hours in a day, some divide the day into 8 hour chunks and say "this is adventuring time, this is long rest time, and this is the time for all the random bits in between like short rests and other downtime"
Ok thanks, that is helpful.
I am trying to find examples of this being played out so I can get a feel and bring it into my session.
What being played out? Long rests?
Usually, unless something interrupts a long rest, the DM just says "you finish your long rest" and it takes about as long as it takes to say that plus the players reseting everything that resets on a long rest
Ah okay. I think I misunderstood it from some videos I have been watching on some of the rules… as if the rests were being role-played as an event itself.
I also wanted to bring time into it so time of day can provide advantage/disadvantage to the PCs and NPCs. Might use a clock on my table that I can manually change 😎
Rests can be roleplayed, players can sit around the campfire talking, describing what they do etc
Hi
Hi
I'm new to DND and have friends who are also new and I'm struggling to make a good first campaign that me (the dm) and my friends can enjoy so I was wondering if I could get some help
I had the same issue and found that dnd beyond is a great tool and the free campaign “the lost mines of phandelver” is a good campaign to start with
It has all sort of hyperlinks to pages of the basic rules also which I found to be very helpful
Thank you I'll look into it
Dungeons & dragons on YouTube also have a play through of it which was useful for me who literally had zero idea
And were doing this online to so I was wondering what would be the best way to do an online campaign
I think the campaign on roll20 which is an online table top has it for £14.99
You’re welcome.
I also saw this site www.multiverse.com being used to create campaigns. Looked cool but not used it myself
Alright
You've been the most helpful person since Ive been trying to make a campaign
Have been in the same situation for a month or so and knowing where to start was daunting.
If you are doing it virtual, roll20 also have a play through of that campaign on YouTube 👍
Hi I am a newbie and looking for someone who can help me explain the rules and how to create characters
I used https://www.dndbeyond.com/
It has a character builder with tool tips and you can download free assets like the basic rules
Hello ppl. I am a brand new player😅 I have the dnd players handbook and a digital dice roller is there anything else I need to get started?

You'll want character sheets as well. Either printed out versions if you'd like to play on paper, or digital versions, through a site like D&D beyond. Other than that, just some people to play with
😮there's a digital version?!
I was just about to look at the stats and write them on a sheet of paper😅
That is also a completely valid way of playing. You do you
No digital sounds way easier

So on DMing, I’m kinda wondering, how many backup encounters should I have if the players go left when I hope they go right?
That's more of a #dm-discussion question
Is the Swashbuckler subclass in the PHB ?
best class to make use of rapier +2?
we're starting level 5
It is in Xanathar's Guide to Everything
Okay thanks
Bard, Rogue or Fighter possibly?
what subclass
Honestly rapiers work with both Strength or Dex as main stat
What does someone benefit from dual welding
Basically you can make an attack with your offhand as a bonus action
So you can, for example, attack someone with a dagger and then throw a second dagger at someone else
and you can take a fighting style that gives you an AC bonus
Where do i use this comands?
the #looking-for-players and #750812887697588356 channels have a pinned message that has a link to the form to submit a message in the channels
you can get some more damage, especially if you have the dual wielding fighting style. most notably, if you have an ability that requires you to hit a target with a weapon to work, dual wielding just about doubles your chance of hitting and getting to use that ability
sneak attack, divine smite, rage, hex, hunter's mark, all of these can benefit from two-weapon fighting
and i'm sure some other things i can't remember off the top of my head
Just adding that its important to know that different features have different requirements and dual wielding helps out in different ways. Sneak Attack has the Once per turn in its description so Dual Wielding just increases your chance of hitting the target to inflict Sneak Attack once per turn, while spells like Hex and probably others have the whenever you hit it with an attack. so you double the damage you do with hex if you manage to hit twice.
I have a question but I don’t know if it should go here or in #third-party or tools.
You can always ask. Folks will direct you elsewhere if need be.
Is there a way I could play dnd online but still use the books I have in real life?
Yeah, there are Virtual Tabletops such as Roll20 and FoundryVTT which allow you to play online
And I can use the books I already have?
The books are a reference. As long as you have the books, you can copy down the info to the VTT of your choosing
Even a VTT isn’t a requirement for playing online.
You could do it with paper books and paper character sheets and physical dice the same as you would in person.
I was just asking because I think with dndb you gotta have the books digitally to use those resources.
Cool.
For DDB specifically, you can use the free homebrew tools to recreate that content for personal use.
Or you can buy just the parts you need, like a specific subclass. (Whatever you spend gets credited toward the cost of the book itself, too.)
Woah, that’s cool.
But ultimately, where and how your group plays and what tools you use is up for you to decide.

My favorite "watch people play D&D" series is Dimension 20, but I hear Critical Role is great
D&D has a learning curve with all the rules, but the basic idea is that you're making up a story with some friends about fantasy heroes going on quests, and each of you plays the part of a character you create
I've never heard of Dimension 20, I may have to check them out. And critical role is great but I just don't have the time nowadays to watch them.
Thank you so much!! I actually just got a book today! I will watch some videos as well!
Thank you!!
Anytime, if you need any further help you're welcome to send me a DM.
The numbers and stuff are there because whenever your character does something risky, you roll dice to find out if they succeed or fail, and the numbers show how good they are at doing different things
Also, one person is the "dungeon master" who's basically the referee of the game. They play as everything that isn't your player characters: enemies, friends, wild animals, etc. They also tell you when to roll and what stats to use on the roll
Question!
Do you get to make a character right away or no? How would I make a character?
Making a character is usually done for a specific game while consulting the GM. That's because there's numbers stuff they'll want input on, like how you determine the character's ability scores
You can make a character for practice/to have a concept ready, though
Ah- thank you!
The basic rules include a step by step guide, yeah
Welcome 🙂 wishing you luck in finding a game. Please be patient, it can take awhile
Thanks!
maybe we can find a game together because I also kidda new but I have played 1 session and I am playing 2 session rn
Just wondering, I’m new but wanted to try making a character, should I make a character site for both dnd and dnd beyond (also what’s the difference between dnd and dnd beyond?)
true

Most groups are fine with new to D&D players as long as you show an interest in reading and learning the rules, willing to learn how your character works, and work well with the group.
Looking for community is for other D&D related Discord servers that often have games.
#looking-for-players is where Dungeon Master's post looking for players to join their game.
alright thanks for the advice man
im currently working on a character on DND beyond, what are the perfered source a charater should use
That’s generally a question you should ask your DM.
hi
If you don’t have a DM yet, I’d just stuck with the defaults for that whole first page.
heya
i have 0 clue what im doing here except i watched dimension20s fantasy high season 1 and 2 and i wanna be an elf LOL
Hi there! Check out the pinned message here in the channel - it has lots of useful links to help get you started!
cool cool thanks
is making a character typically the first step?
i bought this starter pack thing that has some premades but i kinda have an idea for something i wanna make
usually making the character is something you do for the game, with the DM and maybe the party
like, the Fantasy High kids were 100% made specifically for what Brennan wanted to do
oh rip, how do you recommend i find a group?
You find a group and then make your character usually
so they agreed on the tone and setting of the game, what would and wouldn't be allowed for it, etc, made characters for it, and ran it

Im looking to make a post in the looking for Dm chat but its not giving me permissions. Am i missing something.?
Actually the pinned post may be missing from the channels (we're working on updates) so check the #find-a-game channel for information.
Looks like the pinned messages are there so that will also work.
Thank you, i see the submit post text link
@floral crowwhile you're waiting to find and join a game, make a character. make two. make three.
you may or may wind up not using any of them. you may wind up using one of them but modified somewhat according to the DM's rules. you may wind up using one of them as is because the DM is less interested in forcing you into a specific role than just getting you into playing and figures you'll work out details later.
that said, since you are a beginner, and since you dont know what the DM and/or groups will be expecting, do only use the standard races and classes from the 5e Players Handbook (PHB). you can expand to additional rules once you get the basics down.
to create characters, you can follow the text of the PHB in creating it manually, OR you can use the character creation tool on DnD Beyond. a free account will "work" but there will be a fair amount of details unavailable with a free account. Details that, I think, are necessary.
I would recommend, at least at first, using the DnD Beyond character creation tool to create characters and get an idea of what that looks like
but absolutely do fully read chapters 1-3 in the PHB concurrently with the DnD Beyond character creation tool. and later, probably give chapters 4 and 5 a good going over.
all of this will make you a much better player when you show up for your first session, whether or not your characters are used
Yep - check out the #looking-for-players channel - that's where Dungeon Master's post their games and are looking for players.

Hello all my name is daladen and I'm new to d and d I am intrested in starting my first campaign and I hope I can make some lasting friends here
Hello I'm hoping to start my first DnD campaign using the starter kit. It'll be my first time playing and I wanted to try being DM. Will the starter kit adventure work with 3 players and a DM? Is there a required comp for which characters are needed to make it run smoothly?
I'd like to join how can I enter
You find their post in #looking-for-players , if they’re actively recruiting people from online.
Those kits are normally best played with four PCs, IMO, tho with three you may just have to remove a monster or two from each encounter. Take it slow and work with your table to fine tune the difficulty. Don’t be afraid to do do-overs or retcon things as y’all find out how the game works.
Mhm im nkt a dm so I can't do that
That’s the channel where DMs post games for you to apply to. You don’t have to be a DM to look for games in #looking-for-players .
Am I doing something wrong 😕.. its not letting me put info on at all in #looking-for-players

Any tips for solo gaming
As an individual or as a one player with one DM?
As an individual
Use ChatGPT
D&D is a collaborative group game. The closest thing you'll have to "solo D&D" are "Choose Your Own Adventure" type of adventures.
I was gonna link the Ginny Di video, so here it is anyway: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c2nVilB8QeY
There's a publisher on DMsGuild that also focuses specifically on solo play you might be interested in. https://www.dmsguild.com/browse.php?author=5E Solo Gamebooks
Thank u
@dim galleon Check out the Executioners Daughter on the DMs Guild. It's a solo play D&D adventure that combines D&D mechanics with special rules to facilitate DM-less play. And it's not a choose your own adventure book so don't worry about that

Now that I got that out of the way
One more thing I wanted to mention to any dm I'm more then willing to get talespire and I can do some payed but im kinda to poor for that rn and I own the base boom and some basic adventure sets
The big minus for Talespire for me is that there's no free client.
Foundry has an one-time $50 license (usually the DM, of course). Client is free.
Channels used to be locked behind specific roles, but at this point roles are only aesthetic. All channels should be visible to all users.
The message listing this command has now been updated accordingly.
But yeah, roles can now be accessed in id:customize (which is normally found by clicking "Channels & Roles" at the top of the channel list).
Any VTT is fine - just test them out and see if it meets you and your group's needs.
Some are more complex than others. Some require more technical knowledge. Some are digital copies of a whiteboard and pen.
Mhm
I'd like to do something with vtt because I'm so into critical role rn and it's the best option for me
Critical Roll is pretty much a physical table though (with cool screens/backdrops).
Talespire looks great and what I'm looking for
Ya but there's no one around me rn that plays so online is the next best thing
Sure. I run my game just on Discord, no VTT. All theater of the mind and the occasional image or map I'll post in channel. Works well for my group.
Mhm
Then I have my hidden DM-only channels to keep notes and have links to monsters and encounters ready to go.
Im honestly fine with whatever just want to play so badly
I haven't been able to play for years
I'm guessing you've use the #looking-for channels to find a group?
Ya haven't had any bites yet
Have you also tried looking for games on Demiplane, the DnDBeyond forums, Roll20, and other online RPG game resources?
I'd even do discord video so I can use my physical dice
No I didn't know anything to look im kinda still new played once with friends but they all left
Yeah I suggest spreading your net wide - but also be patient. Getting the right group together takes time.
True im just starved is all
Well I'll check them out and if you need a player at all please I'd love to experience d and d again
No openings in my group right now - but I wish you well in your search! Hope you can get back to playing some D&D!
Anyone hosting dnd I want to join a campaign I can play almost all the time 3pm-6 or anytime after 3pm except 10 for week days

Allright ty
And do i get provided with a healer or like any missing roles or do i have to be all in one or else it'll be a oneshot?
But rn im just gonna go into the yawning inns well to do some dungeon crawling
Using a random dungeon generator
Im tryna get some treasure so i can buy some magic items
I have a question so it says as part of my pact of the blade i can do a ritual to make a magical item part of my pact of the blade so if i do this does that mean that all the magical weapons i use as pact of the blade stack or do i just have to pick one
You pick one
Also do temporary hit points stack like for example if i cast armor of agyths and heroisim does it stack or do i pick one?
No, temporary hit points don't stack.
Like no way whatsoever? For example it wouldn’t work if I use the false life spell through aberrant dragonmark and get temp hit points from that too?
Thanks been wondering on that with a Dragonborn character of mine
Hello all; I was just over at the discussion board and was directed to this thread. Do you all mind if I join you all?
Is it better to buy the books digital or physical?
That really depends on personal preference honestly
Both have their advantages
Digital you can carry everywhere
Physical works if the power goes out
Digital you can search through
Physical is easier to read than a screeen
etc
Right ok 👍 thanks, also is there a way to look for games and filter by country/time zone?

Wait. Is there any reason to not be a reborn?
Like couse it's based on another race and you get benefits of that race+reborn benefits
A DM saying no.
Ok so it's clearly just feeling reasons
I mean it does make sane
Sense
I wouldbt feel good playing a zombie
whats a good race to pick for ranger class?
dworf
I went with standard half elf
you keep very little of your original race, and you need DM buy in to even start Reborn with anything from before
Yeah, when you take one of the lineages (reborn, dhampir, hexblood), you give up most of what your original race gives you.
It's not just added on top
At most: two skills and a speed.
Of course, if you're just a Reborn without picking a "before" race, you still get two skills anyway.
If I have tool proficiency, do I get those tools automatically? Is it expected that I go buy them or find them during the campaign if I want to have and use them?
No, you still need to buy them.
Generally, anyway. Rogues come with thieves' tool as part of their starting equipment (if you go that route).
You might also get one as part of your background’s starting equipment.

The links above will get you started.
Why don't you like them?
is ither the backstory or the class
I mean, you can change either. But if none of the classes are to your liking, you can look into homebrew, though there's no guarantee a DM will accept it.
Homebrew is unofficial content made by other DMs and players.

Talks to self in silly goblin voice It allows the shenanigans, or it gets the hose again
hello
So how do I start exactly
Me too
Should I use a laptop for this
if what your on is too small
Computer or laptop because you can see the screen better and better lighting sometimes. Just a thought
oh just to let you know i have watched a session
Cool
Hiya! I'm new here, also new to 5e (I played 3.5e as a teen though). I'm a russian lady in my thirties, I work in pharma and I'm gay. Anyone want to ask anything go ahead 🙂 I'm looking for a mid level campaign to join, I want to play as a warlock and I really love the underdark and spelljammer
havent played
That would be a legal requirement for discord
that is true
Oh okay, gotcha. Ok, I'm an ageless russian lady. I'm a transhumanist irl so that's my goal anyway, to beat ageing 😄
Because this a public place and I viewed lots of times
What would be the best class for the curse of strahd campaign
I'm looking to play as a drow hexblade, but maybe also an offensive cleric 🙂
The class you love playing most
So are there classes you select from or can u make ur own
There are official classes: https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes
You can make your own, but the DM may not allow them.
Are there like "tanks"
Anything can tank if you build around it
Sort of, but video game roles only tangentially translate to D&D.
But generally fighters, barbarians and paladins are more equipped to get beaten up and not having a bad time
But if you really want to, you can become a damage sponge as a wizard or w/e
Idk I was thinking of some undead type thing that can take hits for the team again I've only been in the server for 5 minutes
You could be a necromancer and use your minions as meat shields
Or an undead oathbreaker paladin for an undead dreadnought sort of thing
Nono I'm gonna do that now I was just asking questions:))
I gotta set up my laptop rq
Check rpgbot there's a lot of guides there
Everything kinda needs dm approval, theres a lot of undead species in the setting and it's usually not impossible to give a magical explanation
If you want to be undead, there's options but I wouldn't do it as your first character
Okay thank you 🙂
Warforged also need DM approval
Honestly, if you make a character independent of a game, it's probably a good idea to consider it practice rather than a usable character.
Try to find a DM that allows homebrewing aesthetical things. There's good balance reasons to ban certain stat changes or custom spells, but in my opinion it's a sign of a bad dm if they say
Refuse roleplay stuff, like. I use the blue fireball test. If a DM doesn't let you make your fireball blue (with no stat changes), it's not a good DM in my opinion
But that's just my opinion.
hey, I'm just entering the rabbit hole of dnd, I'm tryna figure out the steps to watch a game, or be apart of a beginners game? I've been reading guides online, and I walked into a store once
Okay. Where can I find the rules?
You've done more then I have
oh aha, are you a beginner?
Here you go: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
Just hyperfixated on it yeah after watching a dnd meme video
Finding a D&D game to watch is easy. Just browse YouTube or Twitch. They're everywhere.
I'm just giving my position which I wish I knew as a new player, not to bash specific dms or whatever. I'm just trying to say, try to play with people who let you have fun as long as you don't break the game. Also I read those when I joined. Maybe my english isn't perfect, I'm from Russia, I'm doing my best tho
I'm the same, just tryna ride out the hyperfixation to a potential game
Yeah same expect I feel like DND would help with my ADHD
i meant a more active watch, like join and watch a small game

how long have you been looking for a game/help?
How do I post in "Looking for dm" channel?
as a DM who has actually had to deny cosmetic stuff, I'd like to weigh in on this. If you were to ask me if you could make your fireball blue, I'd ask you to give a story reason that it was blue. If you have a reason that makes sense, I'd allow it. I have had players want to make Samurai (playing core rules only). It was just a fighter, and their katana was just a long sword. 3 sessions later, they tried to argue that because their sword was foreign and rare, it would sell for much more. The session after that, they wanted to be able to create a new one and because it used less material, it should cost less.
See #find-a-game.
Barbarians are Legendary. If people play mostly barbarians
Uhhh so I just joined I've wanted to for a couple months but never got to even start thinking about it
That's perfectly fine! I don't mean like setting conditions I didn't mean people like you to be a "bad dm"
Do people like necromancers, I was watching a dnd meme and this one guy said "yeah, just summon random idiots"
I mean more like people who actively make the game less modifyable if there's no balance reason for it AND discourage players to roleplay and engage with the story. Maybe I was too blunt, sorry
wasn't looking to make it an argument, and I didn't take it as an accusation. I just wanted to express a view from the other side
I'm not really on the other side, as we both have the take that encourages people to engage with the world and story.
I am the same, are you sourcing other beginners? are you focused on finding other experts to answer questions?
People think they like necromancers. People think they like the idea of summoning hordes of things to fight for them. The truth is that the more things you put on the field, the more overhead it creates and the slower it makes each turn of combat.
Oh no I was just wondering whether people hated certain characters or not
oh i see😄
Ahh that makes sense, I can see why that would get annoying and default at one point
I agree with that. I wish there was a ruleset for simplifying necromancy. I once came up with swarm rules for a table I DMed, but that was in 3.5
Necromancers/Summoners are only really good to have at certain tables that are expecting/wanting them. Usually tables that only have 1 or 2 players
Thanks for letting me know, maybe I'll make a different character first a more simple one and then later on try a nerco
How much experience do you have with DND?
Absolute 0
Then I advise you to play something simple like a fighter for your first game. It eliminates the need to track a lot of skills or spells and learn the mechanics. 5e fighters still get enough skills to make it a little challenging for complete newbies to remember all the things they can do, but at the same time, you wont fall as easily into the tedium of "my only option is to hit the thing; it's all I do"
Yeah I don't care if it's easy or not I'll learn some how
certainly the correct attitude. I'm just used to losing new players because they get overwhelmed
I have ADHD, overwhelming is my middle name
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hD-LWHhiseE&list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN&index=1
brilliant, watching now, very good so far
Hi
I'll have to learn tomorrow gotta do somethin then sleep
Hello I wanted some info on being a dm ?
Hi question is it possible to do a Smith/Artficer multi class
Smith?
What info specifically? #dm-discussion may be a better destination depending on the question.
If i wanted my character to make weapons specifically with materials like iron, bronze ,orichalcum or is that all under artficer
That's with the Smith's Tools proficiency not a class specific skill.
Would i belong here i played one campaign that was pretty bad the dm was bad he made everyone level 1 and after 12 hours of gameplay we were still level 1 it was more storytelling then us playing becuase we couldnt say much at all but i have played a campaign before
This is for questions pertaining to the basics. Otherwise, do check out the server as a whole!
ok
Ok good to know thanks
okay, i have a starting character sheet, I've skimmed through the basics handbook and watched the mighty "handbooger helper" videos. where do i go to from here? I was thinkin maybe I could start testing out some gameplay style stuff? looking for potential beginner games? thoughts?

What does channel divinity do exactly?
At 2nd level, you gain the ability to channel divine energy directly from your deity, using that energy to fuel magical effects.
Basically, you have special abilities related to the cleric class.
Different from spells.
Is there a list?
What you can do varies by subclass, so you'd have to consult those descriptions to see the particular effects.
looking for a group to play with. would be my second time doing dnd, i want to make a wizard
ahoy hoii o/ new to dnd and am confused about the material components of spells, reading the PHB and am trying to figure out if having a spellcasting focus/component pouch essentially replaces the written components or if i need to have both? i figure that if the spell consumes the material i need to have it to cast and need to have the items in multiple to do it more than once, but not so much on spells that just need them like mending and lodestones.
It effectively replaces the components. Components aren't consumed unless the spell specifies, but the pouch/focus still replaces them unless the components have a financial value listed.
ok~ ty~ been working on building a character for the last few days and only just really got the PHB and that parts wording just confused me a bit lol
a focus or pouch can be used in place of the components for spells
if the component costs money and/or is consumed, however, you need to have the component, a focus replaces components that are non-costly and aren't consumed
but when are components costly and/or consumed? the spell always specifies if its components have a cost, or if they are consumed. when looking at a spell, pay attention to its components section.
lets say i want to create dark elf (drow) would i be pulling the racial bonuses from both elf ( dex +2) and drow ( carisma +1) ??? or just drow since im creating a drow caracter
You’d use both. If your DM is allowing the optional rules from Tasha’s you could also choose to put those bonuses on other stats instead of the ones listed.

Uhh can someone help me :))
So basically I read the basic rules and I'm watching hand booker helper. So I went on dndbeyond, but I don't know if I should click standard build or quick build
If you think you understand how to make a character, standard is, y'know, standard. Quick build automates some of the process, so if you prefer more control, standard is probably the choice.
Yeah I mean I wanna make my character to the T so I'll run standard
I'm a creative person and my brain hates it when other things auto make em for me
Sounds like you've got your answer, then!
Already got an idea for class, I'm gonna use a fighter, the barbarian and I'm still figuring out the race, I'm gonna look into the states and effects of them
@harsh fjord I have a question about the character preferences
Should I edit anything or keep it all at the settings it gives you
Id turn on both the optional features keep everything else the same
kerberos is a good barbarian name for sure
I’m gonna call you kerby though
What is Unearthed Arcana?
It’s beta content freely released for playtesting.
It's D&D's early playtest stuff that they release for people to try out
Is the mystic class homebrew or something that didn't make it from Unearthed Arcana?
it was Unearthed Arcana playtest
didn't make it to official punished material because of issues they decided were unworkable. instead we got the Soulknife etc
Is there somewhere where I could get a full history of the Mystic?
Wiki?
Thank you.
How long does it take from something to go from Unearthed Arcana to the actual game?
Depends when the book goes to print.
Is the stuff from the most recent unearthed arcana gonna be in a book?
They're playtest material so WotC may decide not to publish it based on feedback (see Mystic and revised Ranger UAs in the past that didn't get published).
Well the thing I'm looking at is from July of 2022 so I'm assuming it's not gonna make it.
The giant stuff from last year may make it into the upcoming Giants book.
What about the Glitchling race?
Where do I look at what books are "upcoming"?
Google is your best bet
They were announced during D&D direct
Keys from the Golden Vault
Bigby Presents Glory of the Giants
Phandelver adventure
Book of Many Things
Planescape book
Thank you.
👍
Hello! Hope everyone is doing well! (:
Where would I find the Unearthed Arcana pdf(?) for the Mystic class?
Oh, ok.
Thank you.
can someone explain what meta magic is?
Options for changing the qualities of spells: more range, additional targets, casting them without anyone noticing, etc.
I’d really love to learn how to play! Looking for someone to help me out lol I’ve never played at all

Oh wow that’s a lot, this will take awhile
Read the Basic Rules but I highly recommend watching Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" tutorial videos on Youtube. They're easier to digest than walls of text.
Ah ok I’ll check that out, my friends are going to call me later and show my how to play, I think I should know a little bit before hand
I made my character: D
hello i am new to the game and know most of the rules and how you usually play. though i have 0 ingame experience. we want to run a 2hrs one shot with 3-4 players and a dm in 2 days and i want to dm. are there any classic campaings for those circumstances? yust sth simple.
Matt Colville's Delian Tomb, Winghorn Press's stuff, or some Adventurer's League modules (https://www.dmsguild.com/browse.php?filters=45470_0_0_0_0_0_0_0&page=1&sort=3a).
Soo I made my character time to watch some Vids and learn
thx i will look into them
where can i see how long they are suposed to go?
It's usually specified in the first page or two of the adventure. I've seen Adventurer's League modules specifically saying they're geared to be two hours long, but that might not apply to all of them.
how do firearms work in dnd? are they like spells or like crosspows?
they are weapons
like do they follow ac etc
Uh so I made my character, what do I do now

And be prepared to make a new character based on what your DM allows!
Uh I have to make a whole new character 😭😭 then why wouldn't the rules say, join a group and then make a character
Ahh okay
Sucks that I may have to make a new one after hours of making one 😭😭
DMs all have different rules and outlooks on character creation. Its not uncommon that one can come to a table with a general character concept and then just have to fill in the blanks and stats.
but many other DMs want players to all make new characters together at the start of a campaign, which also has its benefits as you are making a character for a game instead of just adapting a premade one.
it appears you got the later kind of DM. I suggest you take your first char as an exercise and maybe you can even reuse the concept one day in a different game
I didn't find a dm group yet I gotta look now just finishing the hand booker helper guide so I know a little more of everything
I want to go over all the classes and races a bit more so I can have a rough understanding of what my teammates could possibly do
good luck then finding a game
maybe you even get to use your char, or the concept at least
but even if you dont, its good exercise in learning the game regardless
I made a barbarian orc that has perception, investigation and insight 12, 11 and 10
My stats are fairly good but my dnd friend says they're fairly common or normal
barbarians are ususally not great at the mental stats or skills
those numbers are unimpressive but not unexpected
Oh yeah I know my int and wis are yk well low but I either had those, or some passive related to animals and stuff so I preferred the insight and investigation options
Did you make your character on dnd beyond? Could you post a link to the character sheet
Uhh yeah let me just copy the link and pull up discord on my laptop
dnd beyond it's very easy I did it couple hours ago
Dndbeyond
It does take a while tho you want to make sure you got everything right don't overthink it to much
Specially with all the reading behind your class as you level up don't worry about it until you get there
can i just post my character sheet here?@fresh fable
👍

the handbooker helper
Really helps you understand
its 44 videos on youtube that breaks down everything and even helps you quick create your class
https://ddb.ac/characters/93770769/hD4GDS heres the sheet, try not to judge to hard
Did you roll for your stats
Yeah I did
I rolled 4 D6 and got rid of the lowest number for each
I have the math if needed
Use point buy or standard array then most DMs will let you use the character
What why?
Yeah, most DMs want to witness their players rolling their ability scores.
That's mean 😔
You can't fudge point buy or standard array
Too easy to cheat. "Yeah, I rolled six 18s. I'm lucky!"
So how do I reroll a character already made
And ontop of that are my stats even that good?
You can edit it
Oh nice
If you want to get feedback, #1045165827068002374 is the place to go
Well, if you're just creating a character for practice that's fine but expect to reroll a new character if/when you have a DM.
Like reroll the whole character or just the stats
That depends on the DM. They may not allow certain playable races/sub-classes in their campaign.
I rolled some good stats one time, but I lost the the paper I wrote them down on.
Like two 17s, a 15, and the rest where all above 10.
Whaa dms do that? So I can't be a tanky rage boy all the time D:
Sad
Guess that's the life of DnD tho
Exceedingly.
Or I can just find Dms that allow what I wanna use and just reroll my stats
I told my players when I took over as DM to roll new characters because I wasn't the DM when they rolled their characters up. Besides I prefer point buy because it's more fair for everyone — some people are lucky with good rolls while others are unlucky.
Recreating a new character wouldn't be that hard with point buy.
So can I keep my character and edit it with point by or
Luck is a concept invented by the weak to explain their failure.
I mean D&D has dice in it lucks always involve
Brother Big Boi?
Seems like a fun gimmick.
Intimidate the dice, then all of the numbers will be above 10.
Fair
The dice that fail you should be eaten.
Isn’t that an Elden Ring stat?
What is asking you that?
It’s which god you worship. It has little mechanical impact unless you’re playing in Theros.
So I copied my character and on my second copy I'm going to change it to point buy*
That’s Narcissism.
Uh I think that would be broken RP wise
Your character can be whatever you want him to be.
Whether your DM will approve it or the party want to adventure with him is a completely separate question.
Not if he only believed it.
Someone came in here asking if they could make their character Ryan Reynolds.
I saw that!
Bruh I did point buy and my stats would literally be the same exact wisdom loses one and so does intelligence
😭
Guess that's two negatives
Yeah, but low smarty pants stats seems fitting for a Barbara.
Did you roll your stats before?
Yes 😭
Did you roll them with your DM present?
Then go ahead and consign them to the bin.
Most DMs won’t accept rolled stats if they weren’t around to see them rolled. Stick with point buy until you know how your DM wants you to make your stats.
But also, cast a wide net and keep looking.
The hardest part about D&D is finding a group, and then getting that group on a regular schedule.
Finding a good group is like dating. There are going to be drama, ghosting, and break ups. Eventually you'll find "the one."
Uhhhh if that's the case I should stop playing dnd now
@lyric fjord hell maybe we will find the same group
Took me a couple years, but now I’m locked in with players rotating as DM regularly.
Adventurer’s League, my beloved ❤️
Or take the high road and become an ✨organizer✨
Is adventurers league just oneshots or is it a campaign?
Or does it differ from shops
It varies based on what the DM wants to run, but with the standardized rule set and logging you can take your character sheet from shop to shop and dm to dm.
Yup. Don’t get me wrong I was playing all through the beginning years, it’s just now I’ve got a stable group now that I know what I like and have a good network of players.
Also helps that being willing to DM means you can form a group in a matter of hours as opposed to days or weeks as a player.
I think you can start whenever you feel ready, it just might be a rockier start
I only knew dnd for about a year before I got into a group
Of course it helps a lot to know the rules well beforehand
I mean I don't need a permanent group right away but I wanna be able to actually play see my brain wired differently
If I don't play, I won't be able to learn and hold knowledge
So 😭I'll get tierd and quit sadly
Check out your local game shop, school club, or sites like Meetup and Demiplane to find groups to play with.
Game shops, libraries, clubs at school, etc.
They’re out there. Sometimes you’ve just gotta put in some legwork to find them.
Being a game developer there are plenty of geeks/nerds at work who play D&D and other TTRPGs.
I regularly organize for games at our local bar. Three tables every other week.
I don’t even need to advertise. We get new people showing up all the time.
In fact, it’d probably be worse if I advertised it. I’d just get tons of players but no one wanting to DM for said players, haha.
There was a pub here in Vancouver that was themed around board games and such. Too bad it closed permanently during the pandemic.
I doubt Toronto is the place for dnd at least round my area but I'll do some research
Man that pandemic set us back. We are just now getting to the point where we are larger than before that darn thing.
Toronto is huge. You’d be hard pressed to not find a community if you actively search.
Storm Crow. There used to be one in Vancouver but I think the Toronto one is still open.
Bettt thank you guys so much
Just remember to have fun
Suburbia for me. People still be clamoring for the games.
So I finished my character I did the point but
sorry
Hey so I’ve just started a campaign with some friends and this is my second time being a dm, so I’m very new to it. Has anyone got any tips for helping me “sedate” a rogue who feels very unbalanced compared to the rest of the group?
why do they feel unbalanced?
Being able to hide each turn and get sneak damage
What level is the party?
https://locator.wizards.com/ help you find a game store
rogues are very balanced, probably more on the weaker end of things.
let them have fun
Maybe have some monsters that have higher Passive Perception?
He just rolled very high dex when making his character
Remember that rogues do burst damage with their Sneak Attack (which they can only do once per turn).
Are they actually hiding? Using cover or just rolling stealth in a room
as soon as the party hits level 5, the rogue damage wont be a problem anymore lol
yeah, rogues are stronger than most martials, but fall off compared to multiple attacks
Ah okay
You can't normally hide in the middle of a fight without darkness or other things to obscure (like fog).
you always can hide behind cover in fights
That's what I said
With cunning action he uses his bonus action to hide
people provide cover RAW, so you can always hide assuming there is at least 3 people
your examples kinda read like you are saying a rogue couldnt hide around corners or behind furniture
That's why I wrote "obscure"
(Sorry I didn't feel like bring up the RAW link... I should be working)
thats kinda how rogues are supposed to work. bonus action hide, attack with advantage, rinse and repeat. as long as hiding is possible on a battlefield of course
Two things: one, you may want to be more clear on what constitutes hiding. Like, there has to be something to hide in or behind, and hiding from someone who can clearly watch you jump behind that bush or whatever will not be productive.
Two, it probably isn't a big deal - rogues' role in combat is mainly to provide spikes of weapon damage, and if they're doing the most single target damage, it sounds like they're serving their role. It'll even out as people gain levels and are better able to do their own things
If I see someone duck behind a table they are not hidden just taking cover
"The DM decides when circumstances are appropriate for hiding. " it's your call when he can or can't hide
Yeah he’s a halfling so when there’s no cover hides behind his company
Ah okay so with time it’ll even out
As DM it's your call when he can and can't hide, although that sounds like fair circumstances. You could say that he can't hide from someone watching him hide, but yeah, I've never been a big stickler for that because it's pretty much the rogue doing what the rogue was built for
rogues sometimes seem OP in tier 1 because their power grows more linearly. meanwhile, other martial classes have big power spikes at certain levels but barely gain anything in between
Yeah I’ve been letting him hide in plane sight so I won’t change that
Like, "hidden" isn't a condition you either have or don't, you hide and some people won't know where you are
I'm back
Congrats
Thanks for the help everyone! I’m sure I’ll be back to ask more questions soon lol
There's a learning curve but the actual process isn't bad
More about quantity of paperwork than difficulty :p
I made a backstory for mine
uh this is the first time i'm talking in this channel, but i need a little help/advice? i'm dming for the first time and i was wondering if there were anything that could help with the process, idk

expertise says it doubles the proficiency bonus for a skill that its a applied to. lets say i have a 7 for stealth's modifier, does it then become 14? or is it applied differently
It doubles the proficiency bonus, so a proficiency bonus of +2 becomes +4
so if you have 20 Dex (5 mod) and 2+ proficiency bonus and you are proficient in stealth, that would be a +7, if you have expertise the proficiency bonus becomes a +4. So 5 dex mod + 4 = +9 in stealth
We usually say that ability scores have Modifiers eg a score of 20 gives you a Modifier of +5, while Proficiency Bonus is a bonus determined by your level. Eg. It starts at +2, increases to +3 at level 5, +4 at Level 9 and so on
nevermind i was wrong again
dndbeyond character sheet suggests that the modifier to the right of a skill is called a bonus
Proficiency bonus increases your chances to hit, your spell DC, makes your skills stronger. So pretty much when your proficiency bonus goes up, you enter a new tier of gameplay

there's some good advice here. Best advice I can give is be patient
There's a ton of stuff, it can feel overwhelming. Just go at your own pace and have fun.
Cool! Thanks I have been watching a bit of gameplay and have made a couple of characters lol will give a go thanks a lot!
You're welcome, good luck!
I know some good basic rules so I'm not entirely clueless ahah! Thanks again
hello there i have a charater ready, for my first time😅
when do i get started? if you dont mind me asking?
well, you have to find a game. Be aware that a character might not be suitable depending on the game so you may have to be flexible. Different DMs will have different requirements for character creation, and different worlds may have different races or classes available. #looking-for-players is a good place to watch for campaigns starting up or looking to fill open slots
okay thank you
no worries 🙂 need help or advice folks are usually around here
Could I make a home brew ghost race?
While Arracocra is cool, I think a ghost would be sick
Got it
I agree with Dunl here - learn the basic mechanics first before going into the deep end of homebrew and the potential balance issues that may introduce to the game.
Same advice - give the core 5e mechanics a run and then start adding on things as it makes sense and as the need arises.
Got it
And potentially look at existing official 5e races and think how they could be reflavored to accomplish a ghost-like feel while maintaining the mechanics.
Hello
welcome!
I'm wanting to actually get to play dnd with people, but no one ever actually plays with me
Well check out the great resources in the pinned message here in the channel!
i have a character set up, but hardly know what to do
and on monday, they expect me to understand everything -_-
I have 3 characters and I've played 2 campaigns
Can you teach me?
Give the free basic rules a skim - I suggest learning about your character features and also how skill checks and attack/damage rolls work.

I have a dnd day tomorrow 12 30 for 5 hours it's not of 5E alot more customizable and easier to understand already made my new character read for jt
what is confusing you?
alright so are you struggling to determine them?
Yes
alright then there are three methods
standard array where you take the 6 values, 15,14,13,12,10, and 8 and then you assign them to the different abilities (let me know if this doesn't make sense)
the 4d6 where you roll a 4d6 and drop the lowest roll of the four and do that for each ability
and point buy which is a bit more complex but the dnd beyond character maker handles it well so when i do that I just use it
and your background usually gives some money
Do I need a background?
yes but dont worry about it too much its super simple
I suggest having a character to spare but also be ready to make a new one for a campaign you join
Ok
Should I go to #dnd-discussion to find a campaign

Would persuasion be better or insight for a cleric
Neither is inherently better as they do different things. Your Wisdom score is likely higher so you would be better at insight than persuasion, but sometimes folks pick what makes narrative sense for their character rather than the mechanically optimal choice.
Should I just consider my dnd group is over since we have had one session and have skipped 3 more in a row?
First ask them why have the missed 3 meetings?
First one cause someone was sick. (Understandable) second cause dm didn't get ready and someone had prior engagement (we decided on Saturdays like a month ago) and today cause someone's leaving town.
Honestly I enjoyed 1st session but idk how normal it is to miss 3 in a row and just cancel everytime
It’s very normal, dnd schedule issues is the true BBEG
My group doesn’t bother with standing appointments. We just schedule them one by one.
As I'm finishing creating my first actual character, I'm beginning to wondering how I can write a character with a question? From what I've seen online, the most creative and inspiring characters typically have a backstory that end in a question. I guess what I'm asking is writing advice.
I've tried the backstory system that's already in the game (i.e rolling for traits, flaws, bonds, etc. once your background is chosen), but found that it left me with a rather flat character. Of course, that's fine if you just want to play the game and get started, but it feels lackluster for me
I don't think you have to roll for them, I believe rolling is just for if you can't decide or want something random. I'm pretty sure you can just pick whichever ones you want if you didn't get things you like.

figuring out what to put where on the character sheet, making sure i dont miss something, and helping me choose a small handful of things
Using the app makes it a lot easier then you can export it to a full character sheet to print off if you want
yo whats good
the more levels a character has the more experience with the world they've had, right?
Essentially, yes.
not necessarily, but mowt of the time, that's the case
you can totally be a level 20 and have no more experience with the world than a 12 year old villager though. it all depends.
the way you level up. either by Milestone or Experience leveling, is doing things. those things may or may not give you more experience with the world.
What’s the best race for beginners
I mean really any race, most of them are pretty straightforward, but probably standard human. It's a simple +1 to all stats and that's I think basically it
Maybe another language
How do you mean? Like an example of my character? If so I could DM you my character sheet
Hey all, I'm trying to make that tough kinda character that can absorb a lot of damage for the party (as this is usually the total opposite of what I usually play). We're starting at level 1 and no matter what I do my character always has only 14-15 HP which seems insanely low to me. I'm currently trying it with a Goliath barbarian. Any suggestions on how to get that HP up to a respectable level?
that's really high for level 1. You really can't get higher than that
The max you could possibly get (if you could figure out how to get a barbarian with 20 con which I don't think you can) is 17 hp.
Huh. For some reason that seemed low, but I guess that's just because it's level 1
Not much of a bullet sponge at 15 HP is he... Lol
eh, he'll be able to take a few hits, and remember that rage gives resistance to physical damage
Riiiiight, forgot about rage. You can tell I've never played someone like this haha
No worries 🙂
So how do i find a group?
#looking-for-players or you can post in #750812887697588356
hello, where can i find help for understanding the rules and how to DM?
thank you!
Where can I share my character and get some constructive critism?
#1045166392174972938 is a great place to ask
thank you!
Would it be wise to make an acrobatic wizard? If so, how should I go about doing that?
Good question for #1045166392174972938 really.
My bad
I meant a question as a character-creating element.
A personality question. For example, for Frodo in LotR, his question would be "what is the ring, why does Bilbo have it, and why is it so dangerous". Kind of a bad example for DnD because that's the inciting action for the plot, but I hope you get my point. I have been having a hard time writing a compelling question about the character that acts as an inciting action for future plots.
Agreed—not sure it fits the game per se. Did any of the resources recommending a question give an example of a D&D character with that sort of consideration?
I didn't find any resources recommending a question, more that I noticed it over the years as I've heard stories about different D&D characters. I believe DNDB refers to it as a personal mystery
I see. I haven't used those kinds of things for character-building, but I could see the wisdom of them. It'd be hard to generalize, especially not knowing any preferences, but thinking about it, you could boil it down to people, places, and things. For instance, is there someone in the character's life they never knew? Or could someone have been lying to them about something (whether that's their origin, a facet of their life, or something else entirely)? Could they have inherited something they don't understand (an artifact, a source of power)? Or maybe they're not from here—wherever that is—but such a place is lost to them, or they know that they're not from here but don't have more to go on than that.
These can also be mixed and matched. Finding the story behind something such as an artifact may lead to one answer that later proves to be false. If you have a DM, you might brainstorm character-building with them too.
I think that seems right. You condensed that very well.
The story I heard that sparked this idea for me was a ranger who was supposed to be sacrificed as an infant by being left in the woods. He ended up growing up by himself (thus why he's a ranger), but searches for who his parents are, why they left him, and what entity they were sacrificing him to. That would satisfy the "who" category very well
I'm very new to D&D, I've only played once with my dad. I want to get into it it but I don't know anyone that likes to play so I need a community that would be welcoming to a new player.
Welcome!
Welcome to the official D&D Discord server! We have some useful links in the pinned message in this channel here to help get you started.
Thank You!
Thank You!
Is there anything that can tell me about all the races because i don't want to buy the stuff on d&d beyond
not yet
I want to make my character a race other than the basic ones
ok
Hey lads im new to this. How should I make a character's personality?
I recommend working with your DM and rest of the group to figure out characters - that way it will mesh well with other characters and the general tone of the game you're playing.
okay thanks!
Hey guys! I am relatively new to DnD and my first DM session is on wednesday. Anybody got some helpful tips so my session isnt such a flop?
Which adventure are you running? Prewritten or homebrew?
Also, ask questions/advice in #dm-discussion
Don't be affraid to make a call and then revisit the ruling later if you don't know a rule. It's often better to just make a ruling rather than spend time looking things up so as to keep the flow of the game going.
Only look stuff up if it really matters or if looking stuff up just doesn't happen to slow the pace of the game (though it usually will).
Remember that it's your decision as DM when Players roll dice. They don't choose to make rolls, they chose what their characters do and it's your job as DM to let them know when that warrants a die roll.
Hey, I'm new and joining a campaign tomorrow. I'm thinking of being a grung and have no idea how to make a character. Any tips/ideas?
Grung is not homebrew
Grung isn't a great choice for a new player however as you have a required need to immerse yourself in water regularly
That would require someone else to schlep you around, which isn't really all that fair to whoever has to do that
Is there a limit to how large or small grung could be?
I don't know what size they are - ether small or medium. There aren't any pc races which are outside of those. Very few races give you a choice of which
I just moved, so all my books are packed up at the moment
Theoretically
You can't be like pocket sized
Grungs stand between 2 ½ and 3 ½ feet tall and average about 30 pounds. Your size is Small.
Oh man I didn't know they were that big
If you're size is small, then you can effectively be carried around by a medium sized creature
Thanks
There are no PC races which are sized tiny
FYI - there are size categories of creatures - tiny, small, medium, large, etc.
PCs are only small or medium.
Official playable races are either Small or Medium. None are Tiny or Large.
To fit into someone's pocket or like a standard mason jar, you'd need to be size category tiny, and you can't be that.
(Not without talking to your DM at least)
Grung are frog-like people, they're not frog-sized
Most weapons, armour, and equipment are made for Small or Medium-sized creatures. Magical armour will resize to its wearer though.
That's where I got confused
yeah
You don't have access to the Grung race? It says what their typical height and weight is (I quoted it above)
Are there any classes/races you would recommend for a first time player?
I have no idea what I'm doing if I'm completely honest
My first session is tomorrow, I probably should've planned ahead
I'm surprised your DM hasn't already helped you make a character
Or is everyone making characters tomorrow?
ok, that all makes sense then
I made a character a while back just for fun, it was a druid
cool
How do quick actions work ?
evening`
There are no Quick Action actions in 5E
Since level 20 is maxed level lets say u ran a rlly long campaign what do u do with the xp if u don't wanna multiclass is the xp just wasted ?
Can they store the xp in bottles or sum ?
There are no epic levels in 5E. Once you hit level 20 that's it. The DMG has options for DMs to award boons
Im really new, and I have no idea wth is DnD. Any help?
nvm, I saw the pinned msg
welcome, and yeah I was gonna suggest checking that one
Is there some place where a DnD campaign is going on? I would like to just observe how it goes
the vast majority of games are private but some people stream theirs on youtube or twitch. Critical Role is the most famous live play but there are plenty of others like Dimension 20, dungeon dudes, NADDPOD etc
you can check out the recordings of those games
Can i homebrew a level 30
Like make a system that lets u reach level 30
homebrew is a path to many things some people would consider...unnatural
you can homebrew more levels, some people have already done so, so maybe check out what is already out there
Nice
There is paid third party content for that kind of stuff, and also homebrew content
Where and what is it called
so next Saturday will be my first dnd game and my character is a tiefling druid that will backstab the party at some point ( approved by the dm ) and apart of his cover up religion he has to tame a dragon and I was wondering is there a way to tame a ruby dragon (cause of the characters backstory) fairly early on without turning it into a draco
you cant "tame" dragons. dragons are people.
Epic Legacy
Hello, uh I’m a new comer
And I’m trying to start off strong, can someone help me with optimizing my character to start my campaign with?
Or would I take this to the optimizing chat
Who said u cant tame people sheild hero tamed people
#1045166845688287292 would be the place to go!
Are you playing a setting based on shield hero?
I dont know who that is
i have a question i'm new at dnd so i don't know if it's possible but can i make a dual wielded hand crossbow character, is it possible
Yup! There’s a feat you can get that allows you to wield and use a crossbow in each hand.
oh that's awesome what is it called
Crossbow expert!
Oh wait. You’d need that and the artificer infusion Repeating Shot so you can ignore the ammunition property as well.
oh awesome! time to figure out how to have all of that lol XD
so the thing is, you could dual wield crossbows if you jump through some hoops, but mechanically, its not better or really different from just using a single crossbow
the main problem is that you need a free hand for ammunition, but both your hands are occupied.
there is a race called thri-keen, who have 4 hands, so they could do it.
the Artificer infusion Repeating shot was mentioned above, but you would need 2 artificers to make one crossbow with that infusion each for your setup to fully work with 2 arms.
No not rlly but since u could enslave drows and stuff then why not inslave dragons and call them a pet dragon i get their a person but u can make hire an enchancter do the same trope as they did
ooh okay that race do look cool tho
You’d need to work with your DM on that, and also ensure your table is okay with that kind of trope. It’s not something that would be okay’d in any of my games.
Hello, new recruit here. Joined today!
I am an artist and Illustrator who also likes to build worlds and stories.
I used to make my own games like "bakugan" and "dragon cards" whatever that was, and I found out that you can actually do that in dungeons and dragons.
I would like to have a crack at being a Dungeon Master, I know its hard (I have seen many Youtube videos which suggests the same) but hey, I want to try.
Any tips for this fresh blood?
An artist u say ?????
haha yeah
